Reviews (page 2 of 12)

A joy to see this pop up today. One of my favorites. I could live inside these songs.

I already listened to this one, good album

Dream Pop Favorite Tracks: All Least Favorite Tracks: None What a pleasant surprise for this site to recommend me such a luscious album, though looking at both the reviews on this site and Rate Your Music (where it’s ranked #29 on the site of the best albums of all time currently), there’s two different extremes. You’re either on the camp where it’s such a perfect album, or you’re at the camp where the album is terrible, with the main issue where you don’t understand what the lyrics are. To that, I’d say try to imagine that this is a Shoegaze album, where guitars are the main vocal point while the actual vocals are in the back-burner, being blend in with the rest of the band. I’m on the one end of extreme that I really love this album. 10/10

Hearing this album for the first time (way too long after it came out) was the kind of experience you don't often get from music after you turn 20, let alone 30.

Brabo demais, parece um tame impala + the cranberries, mas 2x melhor. Começa bem, desenvolve melhor e termina incrível. Nota 1000

Beautiful album! Literally cocteau twins have been in my top 5 for a few month now. I love the instruments and the voice just matches so perfectly. Lovely album!!!

Personal fave

So dreamy! It makes me appreciate Beach House even more.

5 stars of jibberish

What a banger of an opening. Super dreamy album that floated me along. Loved getting lost in it.

So good, one of my favorites so far. Super dreamy

awesome album, no skips at all, what a unique sound, i’ve always had love for this album, sounds so magical

This album was when Cocteau Twins streamlined their sound for the new decade to incredible results. Not to knock on their also great previous work, of course, but there's a reason this is the one most fondly remembered of their records. The songs are more direct, but not too much, the production is clearer, but keep the dreamlike quality of their past works. You still can tell what the hell Elizabeth Fraser is going on about, though. Amazing atmosphere all the way through, very immersive. Tremendous album. Key tracks: Cherry-Coloured Funk Pitch the Baby Iceblink Luck Heaven or Las Vegas I Wear Your Ring

the cocteau twins are aliens i believe

Gorgeous stuff, they just absolutely nail it.

May 25th, 2026 Whimsical Standouts: Heaven or Las Vegas, Frou Frou, wolf in breast, fotzepolotic, I wear your ring

One of the albums that made me who I am today. Absolutely moving & beautiful. If there was a possibility to give 6 stars to a limited number of albums, this one would be on my list.

6 STARS ACTUALLY this is genuinely one of my favorite albums.....an all time great 🫶 can not say enough great things tbh

Fuck me, i loved this so much i started a Substack.

So nice and consistent I really liked this

This was great and sounds so ahead of its time - reminds me of lots of bands who came later like Beach House, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Mazzy Star. Beautifully relaxing sounds and vocals that just made me want to float along. I think I gave another Cocteau Twins album 3* but this one really got to me It finished on a real high "Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires" which, although a wanky title, is a really great slow builder of a track and left me with a positive impression

Never hit 5 so fast. Unparalleled vibes. The closest I ever came to gender dysphoria was listening to this album. Not that I’m trans or anything, but I just remember listening to it for the first time and wanting to do feminine things like lay half off the bed with my arm over my forehead and like cook cloud eggs and hang up string lights and plants in my room Fav tracks: Heaven or Las Vegas, Cherry Coloured Funk

such an airy, whimsical, dreamy album! it felt like I was seeing things with a vhs filter while listening to it. faves are cherry-coloured funk and I wear your ring. loved the lead singer's vocals in lament for gandalf

10/10 saves what a good album i love cocteau twins!!!!! the type of music that makes me wanna twirl around in a flowy dress i hadnt listened to this full album before and im so glad this gave me an opportunity to. Veryyyy hard to pick a fave, but id say its split between pitch the baby and fifty-fifty clown, but every song is so good

EASIEST 5 STAR RATING EVERRR So dreamy, so nice sounding, just heavenly.

holyyyyy moleyy!!! this album is amazing! i've always heard people say they can't understand what cocteau twins are saying and i thought it was a joke, but man it is not. honestly can't tell if this is even in english. this was a little bit of a challenge for me because i like to sing along but this entire album is so beautiful and dreamlike. favourite song: cherry-coloured funk.

Nary a better album to just close your eyes, and let the world melt away for a little bit, to.

Alsof ik zweef

Another great dreamy album from the Cocteau Twins. Too bad it’s my second and final installment for the project, I love this style

peak omg

A very ethereal, dream-like album. Indie has never been a big genre for me, but I feel this album has exceeded my expectations while at the same time being exactly what I expected . There are some really great songs, namely Cherry-Coloured Funk, which drew me into the album right away, and Fifty-Fifty Crown. I think that it fell a bit away at the end, but overall a good album.

Disco absolutamente fantástico!!!!

Ethereal

Favourite Songs: Cherry-Coloured Funk Heaven Or Las Vegas I Wear Your Ring Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires

[album #9] Really liked this album, this is probably the first i’ve gotten from this project that i feel like i will listen to a lot in the future. Cocteau twins were always a band that i knew i should listen to but never did so im glad this finally got me to. so lush, full, and ethereal sounding. i really don’t mind that you can’t really understand the lyrics, the vocal delivery is so cool and meshes with the instrumentals so well. standout tracks on first listen for me were: Pinch the Baby, Iceblink Luck, Heaven or Las Vegas, Fotzepolitic, and Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires. Might go 5/5 for rating on this one but will listen a few more times today

Excellent album, wish I had it on vinyl.

Classic. One of my favorite albums to fall asleep to on a plane

Funny, I listened to this on my own two weeks ago. Started reading up on dark wave and ethereal wave and ended up listening to them. The sort of ambient drone of the music is pretty sweet, that type of thing often works for me. Elizabeth Fraser's voice is very nice. "Iceblink Luck" is a really great song. The title track is fantastic too. Lots of great stuff here - an excellent listen.

One of my personal top 10 of all time

Album 800 is a wonderful fever dream. If angels ever come down from some heaven to sing, this must be what it’ll sound like. The cyclical, loopy nature of “Pitch The Baby” is one major part of this albums surreal aura. Another part is the perfect, echoey vocal runs. I CANNOT get the “Heaven or Las Vegaaaaaas” line out of my head. How infectious. How about that synth melody at the end of “Fotzepolitic”?? Total blissed-out maximalism. That same all-in approach reaches a climax on “Frou-frou Foxes”, taking everything we’ve learned from this album and throwing it all into the pot. Looping, layered vocal melodies. Shoegaze guitar patterns and colorful instrumentation. It’s all here. This record presents itself as a set of ethereal feelings as much as it does a list of tracks. I’m a sucker for albums like this which provide a sense of bliss and catharsis. I listened to this thing 3 times by 10am. Originally, I did this because I was on the fence about what score to give. But by the third listen I’d just given in and lost myself in all the colors and textures The Cocteau Twins threw my way. 5/5

Amazingly beautiful - a combination of Loveless (MBV) and Beach House's best music, and earlier than either. Fotzpoletic is an all-timer - listened to it 4 times today.

This change my vision of music

This band is so special. Their sound is so beautiful and compelling. I don’t have to love everything to know that this record is valuable. It’s imagination music. 5/5

Perfect

One of the best if not the best dream pop album of all time, incredible music, incredible production.

Loved it. They create such a distinctive and beautiful sound together, it has to be 5 stars!

This whole album feels like a dream. It's ethereal, understated and mysterious. It came out in 1990 but it also could have come out in 1980, or 2026 which is an impressive feat as well. My only critique is that I can't really understand what they are saying in a lot of the songs. I can't really say I've heard anything like this before and it sparked my curiosity in this band. Gotta give it the low 5.

My first time listening to the Cocteau Twins and I am impressed, this is brilliant. Love the dreamy guitar sound and the echoes of the 80s style production balanced with a fresher 90s sound. I could immediately hear their influence on later bands like Cigarettes After Sex and Mac DeMarco. Feels great to hear an album for the first time that clicks immediately. I’m already listening to this for a second time, and can tell I’ll be listening to it many times more in years to come. This is what the 1001 albums generator is all about!

9/10 Most surprising 5 stars for me so far. I wasn't really familiar with Cocteau Twins before. The lyrics are unintelligible and the songs are hard to distinguish from each other, but I was blown away by the atmosphere, the production, the super bright and shiny vocals. Human voice is really used as an instrument here. It's mesmerising and addictive. Also super consistent, there aren't any skips. Highlights: Fifty-fifty Clown I Wear your Ring Iceblink Luck Heaven or Las Vegas Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires Wolf in the Breast Cherry-coloured Funk

Another familiar classic. Listening this time it felt more of its time in a broad sense, not "classic 80s UK underground loved by the 80s goth kids" but more recognizing 80s R&B sounds in "Fifty-Fifty Clown," or a loosely Elizabeth Fraser hip-hop adaptation in "Pitch the Baby," like it wasn't entirely out of the mainstream, but joining it in a really great way. "Iceblink Luck" is still probably my favorite here. But the songs are consistently strong, full of warmth. Another 5/5, and would definitely include on my one Must-Listen list.

Fantastic

perfect example of how you don't to understand a song for it to great. overall amazing album

Me re gustó muy cool

A beautiful dreamy album. 10 out of 10 out of 10

This was the most pleasant surprise in a while!! I should've figured we'd see some Cocteau Twins on this list, I just hadn't thought about it. I don't want all of my ratings to be established in terms of a band's relationships to other artists that I love, but it's hard *not* to with CT, just because they were-- and this album in particular is-- so influential to the dream pop/ambient sound that I love so much. Tennis or Beach House couldn't have written half of their catalogue if CT hadn't written "Cherry-coloured Funk", for example. I love how easy this album is to listen to! It's also got a cool ass name. Is it a question, or is it a statement? Who knows. I think I want it to be a question. Am I in heaven or am I in Las Vegas? God, I hope there isn't a difference. I *also* love how many moods listeners are taken through in this album. It's got so much variety it's hard to not let the whole record play twice. I also adore the chorus-y effect on Fraser's vocals that make the whole album sound like I'm hearing her voice from underwater. I've always loved when artists do shit like that. No skips, but favorites are "Cherry-coloured Funk", "Pitch the Baby", "Iceblink Luck", "Fifty-fifty Clown", "Heaven or Las Vegas", "I Wear Your Ring", "Wolf in the Breast", "Road, River and Rail", and "Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires." I don't hate "Fotzepolitic" I just like every other track more, that's all

the formula for a 5-star album: - hypnotic vocals where the only word you can occasionally clock is “cherry” - sick album art - every song title sounds like the name of a surrealist painting at the MoMA - seventeen guitar pedals ALWAYS on - Las Vegas bay-bee 🃏🎰♠️ - walls of sound that make you feel every conceivable emotion at once

Absolutely fine

It was great. Amazing vibes. Reminds me a bit of Holy Motors, but in probably better.

Needs to grow on me but I'm sure this is a 5. Actually think their influence is underrated. Guitars sound amazing, vocals too, very unique.

so vibesy and lovely 5 stars

One of the most important albums of dreampop. Cocteau twins demonstrates that sometimes lyrics are not important, but great melodies and experimentation with textures. The most important elements in this record are the voice and melodys, and the atmospheric guitar riffs.

Half Way - Loving it so far. The production is masterful and the vocals are very dreamy. The opening track was fantastic. End - Absolutely loved this album, not a bad song on it. Highlights are the production and vocals. There has also been some lovely guitar riffs which work very nicely alongside the synths. The songs might be similar but it all sounded beautiful. No flaws. 5/5 - Best Tier

Hell, I don't know how they're doing it either, and I don't know what Elisabeth Fraser is saying (other than that it contains longing and confusion and admiration and joy and sorrow), and I don't know how Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde manage to get the exact right tone combinations on every track (other than just some sort of deep communion with the unspoken universe), and I don't know how they're pulling off the musical equivalent of post-Impressionism, and I don't know why nobody else can seem to get this blend exactly right even though a million artists have tried. I don't know what to tell you.

CLASSIC. love cocteau. such a unique sound with insanely lively vocals

What a lovely album. Like floating in the best of a summertime dream. Absolutely would listen to again. Album 44, April 11, 2026

Overall: 9/10 I had to listen to this twice. Everything about it is so gorgeous, and I feel so relaxed and happy when I listen to it. I would say that the style makes the songs kind of blend together, but the vibes are extraordinary. Those vocals make me want to cry. Fav Song: Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires

I love this album. I already have most of the album downloaded, which makes me think most will hate it. Dreamy, hypnotic, ethereal…this album is perfection.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM. So beautiful. Reminds me of where I was in 2011. I'm glad it's getting the love is deserves. Is is a 5 because it's good and I like it or is it good and I like it bc it's 5?

Loved this album before; love it still. A just about perfect shoegaze album.

I mean it is another world, so magical. Also I like this meme, that is saw once: Dualingo app. Which language you want to learn? -French -German -Lyrics of the Cocteau Twins songs :)

This is one of the most ethereal, dreamlike albums ever written. I love this album so much!!! All of the vocals are beautiful, and the production is stunning!!! My favorite song from this album is easily Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires, when the chorus hits it is otherworldly. HIGH 5!!!!!!!!!!!

beautiful and ethereal. I couldn't understand a word they were saying and you know what? that is ok x Fav Song: I Wear Your Ring Least Fav: Pitch the Baby

To me this is a classic, its like a warm bowl of oatmeal. 10/10 no notes.

10/10 - I listened through again to confirm. This is incredible. It’s a 10. A legendary piece of art.

The greatest dream pop album that I've ever heard. There isn't a dull moment on here. 10/10

An absolutely fantastic album of dream pop/ post punk glory with a distinctively late 80s shoegazey Glasgow sound. All the songs on it feel like floating through some ethereal space with plenty of space being afforded to the jangly guitars and the synths with those beautifully and hauntingly melodic and at times operatic vocals from Elizabeth Fraser. This is an album that highlights why these lists are made to me. I had vaguely heard of the Cocteau twins before this but never listened to any of their songs apart from perhaps cherry coloured funk. It will be going into regular rotation for me and also seems to show me where So much inspiration has come from for the modern British/irish post punk sound has been influenced by I.e Fontaines DC and wet leg etc. it really does feel like it captivated me from start to finish.

One of my favourite albums of all time. Pitch The Baby, Ice-Blink Luck, and the title track run around in my head endlessly. Its maybe the dreamiest album ever written, making me feel like I am falling out of time. The nonsense lyrics and insane production only enhance this feeling. This is a near perfect album. 4.8

Sonoridade muito tranquila!

10/10 Favorites: Cherry-coloured Funk Iceblink Luck Heaven or Las Vegas Fotzepolitic

What a joy to listen to in the midst of this wasteland of 1000 albums. If you ever encounter someone who doesn’t understand how music can have feelings, play this for them and let them get lost in the ethereal vocals and echoing guitars.

Ethereal. Dreamy. Makes me feel like I’m floating in space. 5/5

Vinyl hit the TT for this one. Easy five out of five.

Absorbing music that absolutely achieves its goal of sounding like a "dream" from the shimmering guitars to her inscrutable lyrics. Every song is great!

Second time hearing this album and I love it. Adding to my playlist.

These Scotch women are chatting another language here!

(96/100)

already known and beloved

Dreamy gibberish my beloved

Best dream pop album ever made!

Gold standard dream pop album. Intelligible lyrics take a backseat and are more focused on the vocal melodies that bring all the dreamy guitars, keys, and drums together. Pitch the Baby has always been a favorite song of mine if only for that amazing chorus-drenched bassline. The bookend tracks are also standouts for me. 9/10.

Having the vocals to back up the dream pop they're playing really elevates it from good to greatness. Favourite track: Iceblink Luck

9/10 I can't exactly pin down what exactly makes me love this album, but the sound has such an ethereal and otherworldly quality that makes it such a relaxing experience.

"who knows that gibberish could sound so sick?" -- a post punk fan who thinks they might hate dream pop because it made them sleepy once 5/5

Dream pop and shoegaze masterclass. Classic album for a reason, one of the definitive ones of the genre. Had the chance to listen to Elizabeth Fraser live (w/ Massive Attack) and it was an experience.

Not a single dud on this album, and Elizabeth Fraser's voice is, well, heavenly. (And still just as good 30-odd years later - listen to "Sun's Signature" from 2023). One of my favorite all time albums.

will listen to forever until i die. wow.

Just so good. Makes me want to take a wee edible and sink into a comfy chair.

This is just about everything I want out of an 80s style pop album. Really just need this overlaid with some footage of people tearing down the Berlin Wall. Can't believe the Americans never used these guys for a needle drop. There's a really fine line to walk with this kind of music between transcendent and so boring and/or grating you want to rip your ears off and these guys fucking nail it. I'd go five but the last two songs are just ok compared with the rest of the album. Came back and listened to it a second and third time. Have never listened to this before. Verdict: This is a brilliant album. FIVE. Editing this for a third time to reiterate that this went from never having heard of it on Monday to top 5 album all time on Wednesday. I cannot stop listening to this

The first 5/5. This is S tier.

I'd completely forgotten how much I loved this album when I first heard it. Great to listen to it all again.

OF WKXNGOENXJCOSMSNX I LOVE THIS ONE

Probably the most accessible CT album on release. Lush sounding, still sounds great today.

Awesome sauce very distorted and wavy soundig

The production is mesmerizing! REALLY liked this one

very fun dreamscape vibes love it

Actually really good. We definitely preferred it to treasure. I've listened to this before but it didn't click until now. Cherry coloured funk is amazing.

Some of the most beautiful music ever created.

Love it road river and railll

I don't really know where to start with this one. I just truly adore this album. Cocteau Twins managed to create the perfect distillation of the Dream Pop sound across all ten tracks, and there isn't a single moment I would change. The reverberant, ethereal soundscape creates this magical haze for the melodies to shimmer and shine through, and then you add in the lyrics, that sound so close to being recognisable english, but yet you can never quite make out what is being said. It genuinely feels like you are walking through a dreamscape. I could gush about this for so long, but I simply don't have the time. One of those rare "perfect" albums, I seem to never get tired of. Fav Track: 5 - Heaven or Las Vegas Best Three Track Run: 6, 7, 8

Nice and atmospheric. I like it

Fuckin cool

baller

Excellent!

Absolute perfection. 10/10

Absolutely Mind blowing

ÄLSKAR, heaven or las Vegas och pitch the baby är ju obvious bangers

Absolutely gorgeous dream pop that is both huge yet intimate. It transcends its genre and dreamy atmosphere thanks to just the right amount of pop hooks and accessibility. By any reasonable definition, a perfect album.

My mind is telling me a four, but my heart and soul say otherwise. My coming of age album, my struggle album, now a gateway to get lost in a reality I know will never be mine.

Hey what is this sound? I turn it up a little to hear it better. Not grinding at all. Clicking the thumbs up to make it easier to find later because I know I'll be looking to repeat this experience. There are no recognizable public hits yet every tune is pleasing and the closing leaves you wanting for a little more. ENCORE!

Every song on this album is a banger.

When the cocteau twins said "wawesonapey fomiesoo maninanual waweezaweenal" i really felt it. 1000000000/5.

SO GOOD. Sounds like summer and nostalgia. Immediately on my playlist, every song.

I was excited when I saw this pop up on the day, and rightfully so because holy shit, this thing was amazing. It has an atmosphere unlike any I've heard before.

lieeebs

Really great surprise

Really nice instrumental and her voice is so relaxing

Excellent, very 1980's production but great songwriting and production, fantastic!

Perfect album from start to finish. Not a single filler. The whole record feels like a summer dream. I absolutely love Elizabeth Fraser’s vocals. She’s a real-life siren. Bye!

The thing with Cocteau Twins’ Heaven Or Las Vegas is that it’s an incredible record - every track is fully formed, utterly gorgeous and exists in its own its perfect space. It’s certainly more direct, less ethereal than their previous records, but no less unearthly. Song titles such as “Cherry-Coloured Funk”, “Iceblink Luck” and best of all “Frou-Flou Foxes In Midsummer Fires” promise so much and deliver every time. The trio sound so energised – Elizabeth Fraser captivates throughout, singing with real lucidity and Robin Guthrie’s guitar chimes and resonates, adding shimmering vitality to everything he touches. It seems almost ridiculous to type, but Simon Raymonde and the unnamed drum machine provide the perfect rhythm section. As much a “head’ album as anything by Pink Floyd and their ilk, and equally effective as company on nighttime car journeys through unlit countryside – just spellbinding. 10/10

9/10 13.02.2026

Heaven or las vegas top 10 song oat

Sounds like a winter’s night around the fireplace. There’s cold in the distance, but a strong warmth in your midst.

Would still be a 5 even if it was just the first 10 seconds of Cherry Coloured Funk

Awesome and spacey, no bad tracks but for me, all starts to sound the same after a bit. But I get it for sure [EDIT LISTEN #5 I GET IT NOW, EASY FIVE]

LOVE DREAMMMMY POP

Even better than I remembered it being. Such a unique sound they perfected, even within the shoegaze genre. Blew me away when I first heard it and continues to impress me still.

Outstanding. Euphoria, incredible soundscapes, syrup dreams. This is so ecstatic, so sad, it just really makes me FEEL. Few records can do that like this. Sounds like transcending. The fact the lyrics are kind of incomprehensible is perfect.

It's great to hear a record and instantly recognize the influence it's had since it came out. I could have sworn I've listened to this before, but I've been hearing it's echoes.

How's that for a slice of fried gold. Dream Pop perfection

Just listen to it. Things will become clear.

Fun album

Really enjoyed this from the get go. I added this to my to listen to list even though I knew this was in here but I wanted to listen to it early so kinda funny it came up a few days later. Really lived up to the hype, will be back to this very soon 5

Great album to listen on a rainy day

Love this and brings back some happy memories

Love it. I can hear similarities to The Cranberries and Beach House here.

Awesome. Love the vocals and pretty much every track a banger

of course

I definitely wrote them off for far too long, that was beautiful. I was laughing my butt off at "Fotzepolitik." Why give that name to such a gorgeous song? xD

I… finally get it! Lyrics are still incomprehensible though

good hood

LOVE. I have a new artist to love

This is so unique and beautiful. It's so floaty, dreamy, and ethereal as well as being pretty transportive. I'm not sure where it's taking me, but it's taking me very far away. I have no idea what's she's singing, but it just does not matter to me. I've never been a big lyrics person in general. This is just so good. It's a little same-ish, but not enough that the sound gets tired. It's impossible to pick one single favorite song; it's all that good. If you forced me to pick a favorite, though, I think it has to be the title track. The vocal harmonies, the bass line, the repetition with slight harmonic changes. It's just so good. I'm so blown away with this. It got a save and an instant re-listen, despite me having a few other things I wanted to listen to during the day. Favorite Song(s): Iceblink Luck, Heaven or Las Vegas, Wolf in the Breast

An old favourite. Wolf in the breast always moves me to tears. Epic.

One of the greatest dreampop albums ever released. 9.3/10

Really impressed. I had heard of them, but I guess I hadn't listened to them. Excellent production. I found a new band for me.

This is among one of my favourite albums of all time (within the top 15.) It just has such a perfect sound to it. The wordless vocals being one of my favourite aspects of this album, which is fairly unique, especially for the entire duration of the album. It proves to myself once again that you don't need to understand the words to understand the song, the tone of the words and how it's delivered is more than enough. This is definitely one of the best albums when it comes to atmosphere, like if I 'imagine the album,' I imagine a tundra with furious amounts of snow pouring down. Highlight Song/s: "Cherry-coloured Funk", "Heaven or Las Vegas", "Wolf in the Breast" and "Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires"

Ethereal. Loved it

Not even their best. Still phenomenal.

💯💯💯💯

Banger! One of those albums I’ve heard a million times so a little of the magic has worn off, and Bluebell Knoll is still their best, but you can’t deny this is great

Esse eu já tinha ouvido. UMA EXPERIÊNCIA!! Som onírico, parecendo the cure, pode ir me botando

Always been a fan, some of their 80s music is absolute staples for the era. They just deliver an ethereal vibe that was a solid part of the alt 80s.

A favorite

Wonderful, we were cleaning the house after a stressful week. Renee Good was murdered and ice is causing chaos. This album fit the end of week cleanup mood.

absolutely love love this album so whismy

Pure gold

Had absolutely no concept of what this was going to be - but it was fantastic! Want to crawl into a nice warm bath and listen to this on repeat. Relaxing and heartfelt atmospheric pop. Loved it, will definitely listen again.

Perfecto

This is gonna sound brain-dead, but Heaven or Las Vegas is like if you took the spirit of My Neighbour Totoro and put it into an album. It's just so chill and nice. First time listening to it too, so I'm definitely gonna listen again with some nicer headphones.

I love this one so much I feel bilingual

I find it hard to write something profound about an album that means a lot to me. So I’m just going to stick with this: Heaven or Las Vegas means a lot to me.

Peak entry into 90s rock, loved it, didn’t realize I already knew the title track. Makes me feel like I’m in a coming of age movie where I’m a girl finding her independence in a montage scene that definitely includes driving around with the windows down and my hair blowing in the wind (almost def end of movie vibes)

I can't believe there aren't any twins in this band. Also SCOTTISH. Reminds me of Akira Yamaoka. RATING: 0/2 Twins but 3/3 Scottish

So I’ve been listening to Cocteau Twins here and there since like 2019 but never the whole album at once. It’s a whole vibe. I think I’ll be returning to this one a lot. I like it because it’s almost like the predecessor to Vaporwave, one of my favorite genres.

Mystical (goal is to get better at reviews before the year end)

Amazing album.... I love this record.

Cherry-Colored Funk - 5/5 Pitch the Baby - 5/5 Iceblink Luck - 5/5 Fifty-Fifty Clown - 4.5/5 Heaven or Las Vegas - 5/5 I Wear Your Ring - 4.5/5 Fotzepolitic - 5/5 Wolf in the Breast - 5/5 Road, River and Rail - 4.5/5 Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires - 5/5 I don't think I've ever been entranced by an album. The ethereal vibe this whole thing gave off made me forget that I could not understand what the lyrics were. Didn't matter, still found out how to levitate because of this. Overall: 5/5 Favorites: Cherry-Colored Funk, Pitch the Baby, Iceblink Luck, Heaven or Las Vegas, Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires

My Leaving Las Vegas Playlist. Loved! 5/5

Perfect. No notes. I can't think of a single thing that I would change about this absolute masterpiece. They're just an otherworldly, beautiful band, incredible songwriters, and fronted by a majestic vocalist. Lots of people wrongly criticising the fact you can't make out the lyrics. First of all, you can a bit, second of all, I don't recognise every molecule in a bath, doesn't mean it can't wash over you and take away your troubles.

absolute music

This whole album is like a soundtrack to life after going to a museum and your persepctive changed completly, your completly infactuated with the thing u saw and life just changed that bit. Are they singing in english.. i think but i guess we will never know..

Dreamy, eerie, beautiful ethereal melodies... Like being violated by a crying angel... ever so gently.

heavenly experince

I love this album so dreamy and atmospheric

Solid.

10/10 I was surprised, really good album

Absolutely iconic. One of my favorite records of all time.

I love it. The criticism of the unintelligible vocals doesn't work for me, I think they add so much mystery. What they're saying is less meaningful than the atmosphere created

Stop honking! I am trying to understand the cocteau twins

"Heaven or Las Vegas" is the sixth studio album by Scottish band Cocteau Twins. Dreamy pop and ambient pop are the Wiki-listed genres. The music is described as blending dream and ambient pop with elements of psychedelia, experimental and electronic textures. The bandmembers include Elizabeth Fraser (vocals), Robin Guthrie (guitar, drum machine) and Simon Raymonde (bass, keyboards). The album was recorded right after Fraser and Guthrie's baby was born and during the death of Raymonde's Father. Commercially, it was the band's most successful album reaching #7 in the UK and #99 on the US Billboard 200. It was critically well-received and recognized as one of their most influential works. "Cherry-Coloured Funk" opens the album with a slower beat and a wavering guitar. The music is anchored by the bass. Fraser initially with a deeper voice that is overlayed with a falsetto. Feelings of warmth and longing. An icy, shivering guitar begins "Iceblink Luck. A melodic bass. Fraser sort of yodeling with harrowing vocals coming in. Guthrie gets his guitar sounding like a grinding saw. Guthrie keeps it going with chiming, guitar rings in the self-titled "Heaven or Las Vegas." Fraser beautifully layers her vocals. I imagine this about is about a contrast between the beautiful and excess. Guthrie's guitar sounding like the Eno-jet guitar in his two solos. A fantastic song and one of the best songs of the 90's. The second half of this album features more synthesizers. "Fotzepolitic" has a synth open. A swirling guitar and guitar solo. The song evokes a holiday vibe. "Road, River and Rail" has a darker guitar and a wind blowing sound. Fraser's vocals are soulful and the most straight-forward pop sounding. The album closes with "Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer." Piano keys, percussion ticks and a droning sound with echoing falsetto vocals. The drums kick in and the song picks up. Fraser once again with wonderful crisscross vocals in a song of grief, loss and probably other things. When I first heard the Cocteau Twins in the 80's, I was like Wow! those twin sister voices do sound a lot like each other. And that right there is one of the highlights of this outstanding album; the layering of Elizabeth Fraser's vocals is exquisite being emotional and really instruments of themselves. I can't really understand what she's singing about. That's no mater as they alone create a textured dreamy atmosphere. As previously mentioned, the music is anchored by Raymonde's bass. Guthrie's swirling, ringing and echoing guitar sounds perfectly match the vocals. Everything I've heard from the Cocteau Twins is worth a listen and this album may be their best.

Wow no les conocía, me gustó! Me gustó bastante!

right up my alley and i'm going to give it 5 stars because i can see this going into my rotation. i think they're influential to a lot of other bands i like

Quite a surprise find.

holy sshit

YEYSYSYSSS I love the sound and her voice, it’s so magical. The synths and bass sound so good. My favorite tracks are probably Pitch the Baby and Heaven on Las Vegas.

i want to listen to it twice!!

I'm sick of this.

amazing dreamy everything no skips

I LOVE THIS ALBUM IT'S so heavenly like a perfume.

I LOVE COCETU TWINS

Very good kind of like abba in another language and whimsical in a different way

literal angels

haters that don’t have a heart will be giving this 1 star

Already listened and love it

i’ve heard this already, one of my favorite shoegaze albums. i loooove cocteau twins favs: cherry-colored funk, pitch the baby, iceblink luck, wolf in the breast

Why is everyone so English centered? Well, it’s really easy to guess where they are from that way. I get that lyrics mean a lot. They can make or break a song. But if you hear a song in another language, even if it sounds incredible, would you say it’s shit just because you can’t understand the lyrics? I suppose you don’t even listen to songs in other languages. Why would you when THE US IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD GOD BLESS THIS FREE LAND, and let’s not forget THE GREATEST EMPIRE OF HISTORY ALSO BREXIT WAS AN AMAZING IDEA. Australia and Canada are safe, I don’t have beef with them. Maybe it’s just me, or other people like me. Not natives to an English speaking country. Growing up, the radio was 80% English. Did I understand a single word? Not at all. I couldn’t even make it out when a song was in English. I just clocked that it was another language. BUT I STILL ENJOYED THEM. I just vibed along. I didn’t even know the title of any of them. After learning this stupid language, I do admit that I lost interest in some songs after finding out what vile stuff they sang about, trashing on minorities in general. So I get that lyrics can influence your reception of a song. But if you can’t make them out, guess what? Google is free.

I couldn’t dream of giving this less than a 5. It’s just exquisite and sounds like nothing else. Iconic and breathtaking!

This is a great album. I love it's ethereal nature. An easy 5.

Ambient pop heaven; transforms you to the time where the 80s blend into the shape of the 90s.

Heaven

This sounds like what MGMT were inspired by. It's an entire album of synthpop beauty, and despite the fact that I had never even heard of if before, I found so much to enjoy. Right away, the opening track, 'Cherry-coloured Funk', was breathtaking, and 'Iceblink Luck' has the same mystifying quality. The title song does live up to the expectations, and the disc never even loses its momentum, as 'Fotzepolitic' keeps up the good vibes. Be sure to not miss this one, even if you're having doubts like YesterMe.

They have an beautiful, ethereal style that, for me, requires a specific state of mind.

incredible album, one of my favorites I've gotten from this list. How did I sleep on Cocteau Twins??

Everything I loved on Treasure done even better. I could listen to Cherry Coloured Funk all day. The vocals are just entrancing. The guitar tone on the title track is great. Love this whole thing.

Very sooth sounding album. Euphoric at times!

They pretty much founded the genre of dream pop with this. Absolutely stunning album and one I can always come back to without ever getting bored.

I seem to enjoy reading the bad reviews of music I like more than the positive ones. It's funny, Cocteaus' records are so old now I forget that the lack of discernible lyrics can still irritate people so much. There's Cocteau Twins records I prefer because it can feel on this one that they had almost perfected their sound too much just before Britpop came along and dulled all the colours for everyone. Still beautiful though. Still five stars.

There are actually people on here that listen to this and say "yeah this is a one star album". Fucked up. It should be physically impossible to give this anything lower than a four. This is an all-time great. Favorite track: Heaven Or Las Vegas 4.5/5

One of my favourites bliss

such an awesome and ethereal sounding dream pop album. i love how it all blends together, it makes it feel like a piece of music instead of individual songs. the backtrack throughout is great and the vocals are beautiful (despite not really knowing what's being said the majority of the time). an album i've listened to many times and will revisit many more times

topim se bukvalno, remek delo

Had a privilege to listen to this angelic voice live <3

Favorite track(s): Pitch the Baby, Fifty-Fifty Clown, Heaven or Las Vegas, Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires

Len Houmous once married twins. They were locally known as the Cock Toe Twins due to a rare genetic mutation where they had actual cocks for toes. Len used to love a foot job from them. 5.0 5/10 Heaven or Las Vegas

Perfect. 10/10

Very surprised I hadn't heard of this

This is a classic for me already. A great listen on an early morning drive in to the city.

Perfection

Already love this record, need to do another spin anyways.

Love this album! Really draws you in - interesting to listen to and also fun and artistic and catchy ! Deserves to be on this list deserves 5 stars - always something new to hear on a relisten

wholesome <3

When I bought this album at a record store the guy working there said, “what a choice huh? Heaven or Las Vegas!” And I just replied, “ya, what a choice,” and nothing else because I have no social skills and can’t hold a normal conversation. Anyway, great album 5/5

Lovely listen

An album I know & love, from the very outset I’m transported into an altered dream world. This is Cocteau Twins’ materpiece but also accessible a great introduction. I love shoegaze but this is not shoegaze, it’s not dream pop, this is ‘skygaze’ they created something more unique, dreamy but more uplifting. We played this over & over when our baby was born, happy memories. A mention for the cover art which looks how the music sounds. Where do you start with the vocals, stunning. I love the way Liz Frazer’s lyrics drift in & out of actual language & the harmonies are insane. But it’s not done in a theatrical ott way like Kate Bush, this is magical. This is warm, red, melodic, enveloping womb-like enchanting music. Some of the production has aged it but no surprise given when it came out 1990. It’s really difficult to make uplifting dreamy music but this is a rare find. Vocals are classical at times. Also a note to the instruments - it’s brilliant & textural but they’ve kept it background to let Liz’s vocals shine. This is exactly the music that should be in this project, I would love to discover this.

This is such a unique album. It’s so lush and intriguing. Definitely one that has stuck over the years, despite me not really connecting with some of their other albums. I can’t give it anything other than a 5.

Ethereal and whimsical songs, with a hint of 80's sinth pop. Or, the other way around. Excellent anyway!

Absolutely sensational and an exquisite listening experience. Not sure what the music is about and sometimes can't even recognise what language it's in, but that doesn't matter, everything is communicated through the voice and instruments. Saved it so I can listen to it several times and have definitely been prompted to look further into the meaning, which I guess what good albums are all about. But even without that, just hearing the album is an absolute joy, I can easily see it become one of my favourites, feels like a soundtrack to a beautiful day.

wish i had someone to makeout with to this album

Nossa, que álbum perfeito!

A really pleasant surprise, I can see where a lot of the distortion that made shoegaze a thing in this album but I like this a lot more, a total vibe that I can throw on any times, a lot of people complaining about the lyrics being indecipherable are a bit overblown but if you consider lyrics an instrument then to me they add to the overall product. A great overall atmosphere with every song deserving a spot on the album. Definitely a new regular of mine with a lot of songs going onto my playlists

Holy peak

holy fuck

One of THE best dream pop albums I can name. 3 seconds into this album your already ascending. The last 2 songs are a little less interesting, but I'm giving this a 5 just by virtue of how often I come back to this album.

One of the only "shoe gaze" or whatever you call it bands that I'm into and this is easily my favorite album of theirs. No filler and just stays strong throughout the whole thing

91/1089 the enunciation isn’t the clearest but that isn’t stopping me from vibing with this project, some really ethereal and cathartic synthy production here that i greatly appreciate 5 stars or 83/100

I love this album. Lush sounds and ethereal vocals. Dreamlike. What's not to like.

Me lembra o primeiro gole de café quente numa manhã fria. Me lembra o Sol atravessando pelas frestas da janela do quarto. Me remete imagens lindas de coisas divinas. Me lembra amor e romance. 5/5

I had to sit on this review for a few days to really get my thoughts in on this album. It’s brilliant shoegaze, a genre which I personally have fallen in love with over the last few years, and especially this year when I listened to Loveless as the first album of my year. This doesn’t hit to the same highs as loveless, but the overall quality of the album easily makes it something I’ve already returned too. It’s more pop oriented rather then the average Shoegaze album, but it helps it rather then diminishes it. Plus the vocals being kinda washy and not that audible is actually amazing, an audio representation of how I listen to vocals in music.

Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires.

I have no idea what I listened to (I swear none of it was english) but it sounded really nice and I'll definitely listen again.

5/5 undeniable, great, dreamy

Impeccable atmosphere. I don’t think I want or need another shoegaze/dream pop album, this is the top

i’m already a cocteau twins fan so i’m mega biased but this album is so good, one of the best albums of the 90s and perhaps of all time

Good music to play for the goth dommy mommies

Spectacular. Not a single quibble on songwriting, performances, or production. Just gorgeous stuff. Still the gold standard for dream pop. Sorry Beach House.

I love to hear it every time.

I listened to this album even before starting this project, and I still love it just as much on the re-listen. It just has such a good vibe, perfect atmosphere, and a lovely listen from top to bottom. Truly an album that sounds good as an album, not just singles.

Let’s get weird

liked it

Heaven

Hearing this for the first time at 14 was pretty crazy. It still holds up, probably because the production is pristine. Who doesn't feel like garbled sad English sometimes? As if the metalheads who hate this actually know what's being said.

surprised me! Beach House & Alvvays better watch out!

This is #day401 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… this has to be the most idiosyncratic/avant-garde band in the world of '80s dreampop, shoegaze, post-punk, and goth. Listening to Cocteau Twins is like being awed by a melody of some unique bird amid a midnight summer forest: such a heavenly marriage of voice and instrumentals. Little is there to add when the whole affair is that mesmerizing. What can be even more wonderful, though? I guess the fact that you won't be mistaken if you choose to listen to any album by this band. This music's likely to make you float in the ether. This is a 5 out of 5. Can't wait to revisit Treasure. Looking forward to #day402.

I really enjoyed this dream pop album

One of the greatest, especially the closing frou-frou

Obra maestra. No bromeo EN ABSOLUTO. CERO glazing. Muy buen album joder 6/5

This album got me back into listening to whole albums after years of spotify slop playlists. I had already been a fan of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine, but Cocteau Twins introduced me to a whole different subset of shoegaze/dreampop music. An absolute classic.

The kind of album I started this project to find. Gem all around

A lovely album. I love the vocals, production and overall atmosphere they gave off here. HOWEVER, listening to gibberish (yes, gibberish there are no lyrics and what we hear is meant to be interpretated by the listener) can get a bit tiring after a while... Sometimes I think its best to listen to the tracks isolated, but thats just me.

The ambience in this album is beautiful. The vocals and instrumentation are immaculate. My favorite track is probably Cherry-coloured Funk. Overall, this album might be one of the best I've ever heard. No skips.

Dreamy and ethereal. For the aggressively ignorant monolinguals, it’s called glossolalia.

One of the best records.

I sincerely wish there was a way for me to live inside of this album forever. It always hits impeccably well when I put it on. Sunny, cloudy, cold, warm, happy, sad. It just fits while carrying me away on dreamy, floating melodies. Utterly obsessed. Highly recommend listening to the highest quality audio version of this album with the nicest set of wired headphones you can find. 5/5

𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘢𝘴 𝘝𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘴 feels like the provisional peak of the dream pop/shoegaze scene — though the towering classics that would follow soon after might overshadow it, this record still radiates timeless beauty. Liz Fraser’s voice is so otherworldly she could sing a cookbook or a gardening manual and it would still sound transcendent; on photos she may look unassuming, but here she’s simply luminous. Robin Guthrie’s shoegazey, dreampoppy guitar textures complete the spell, making this one of the genre’s most enchanting records.

A perfect dream pop record. Even though the lyrics are unintellegible most of the time the emotions that are conveyed through these songs are still perfectly understood 10/10 Favourite: Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires Least Favourite: None
