Fav: Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires Least Fav: Road, River And Rail Wow. I simultaneously felt like I was floating in space whilst also getting flashbacks to my childhood. I’ve never experienced this before in an album, simply perfect
10 Lav it Lav it
Gorgeous album. Never really appreciated it until recently
beautiful album
Love this, one I often return to when I want to feel like I am sinking into eiderdown, albeit usually for a 3 or 4 song fix. That said I think more than half the album is very strong, the vocal performances on Pitch The Baby and Frou Frou Foxes are incredible, sounds almost like she is singing in tongues
I told a friend who really likes this group that I had this album today, and she described it as "ear candy." I have to agree! It has all these pretty layers to it that create a dreamy and delicious soundscape. The lyrics are mostly impossible to understand, so much so that apparently even Spotify doesn't know them. But I kind of like how her vocals became more of an instrument in all the layers because of that. She has a beautiful voice, and these songs carry so much feeling and soft intensity, if that's a thing. Really enjoyed!
My first time hearing this album and it was a revelation. My college roommate listened to their earlier albums and I remember thinking that I liked their sound but it was kind of formless and opaque. This album, though, has hooks and the songs are tighter, more focused. These are lovely arrangements and melodies that I liked so much I listened a second time. Elizabeth Fraser could sing the phone book and I would still listen. Truly unique and gorgeous.
A foundational album in the realm of dream pop, a genre I really enjoy. Like most people i dont understand a goddamn thing Elizabeth Fraser sings but it doesn't matter - her Kate Bush-esque vocals are stunning and perfect for the music. It's truly heavenly, so swirly and soothing. Impressive to me that only three people can achieve this sound. I love the title track and Fotzepolitic the most, but every song is fantastic, no filler for me. Feels timeless too, an album that continues to influence and I'm sure will for a long time. Enchanting listen
Is there a band that's more feel than real? I have tried several lyrics sites...and I still don't think anyone has gotten these lyrics right. but like I said, it is the feel of the music not the exact words. I still loved this album: 5/5
pretty good! The vocals and the sound production stand out to me, a real dreamlike quality to it. Also this album feels like its a decade or so before its time. It felt like a fun journey, best way I can describe it. Those sweeping synth notes just take me out and I feel like I'm on the open road in the 90's to a new town.
From the opening notes I knew I was going to love this album. Ethereal female rock with great harmonies and bass. Fantastic!
I've never even heard of this group, let alone heard anything from them, and now I'm wondering how I missed out on them. This tickles my brain so nicely. "Cherry-coloured Funk," "Iceblink Luck," and "I Wear Your Ring" are particular favorites.
I can’t understand what they’re saying, but it sounds great
These harmonies blew me away! I have been recommending this album to anybody who would listen!
Very dreamy album. I honestly couldn't hear the lyrics but it didn't matter
This album is finally starting to click, it went up from a three to one of my very favourite dream pop albums
Ah the Cocteau Twins ‘go commercial’ in the way only they can. Soaring guitars laden with chorus and delay and multi part harmonies in a mixture of tones. For me not their masterpiece but still ‘a’ masterpiece.
➕heaven or las vegas, frou-frou foxes in midsummer fires ➖NOTHING!!!!! one of my favorite albums of all time, truly. had almost everything saved already, and its a JOY to revisit. its the album i always put on the jukebox at bars….
This feels like music porn, a real treat for the ears. Not every song is a hit, but the album has so much replayability, especially when it starts with Cherry-Colored Funk.
Incredible album
What a pleasant surprise
Not to be gross, but I've listened to the album a lot during sex, so it was nice to finally hear the second half of it 😜
My all-time favorite album. Changed how I viewed music, opened my eyes to what music could be. Not a song I don't love.
Snow has returned (joy) as the bi-polar winter of '25 rolls on HeavenORLV hits it's mark! So many albums are created of of diversity, a moment in time. This is one. Enjoyed 50-50 Clown, Heaven Or Vegas. Such an different sound, is it pre-Goth?
Heavenly dream pop. Just pure bliss from start to finish.
Fantastic!
I feel so cool when I listen to this album. So, so good! It’s a twin day!
las vegas next question
Feeboo stree Fav song: I Wear Your Ring
the only album ever made, its been said. i had a thought that the lack of emotional signposting on this record is a big part of what has made it special to me...theres not a single emotional state in which it feels condescending, and yet its effect is undeniably medicinal...or at least, that of a temporary shelter. i once listened to this hiding in my family's car at my grandpa's funeral, avoiding all interaction or outside thoughts because my social, sensory, and emotional batteries had been so depleted. there are few albums that would have worked as well...its soft on you but it still Fills All The Space, it blocks everything out without being overwhelming or demanding. just kinda makes me think ab the miracle of art in general...a small selection of ppl have an idea, manifest it in the universe, and then its just Out There, creating singular experiences they'll never know about. idk. leaves me a little in awe. the worth of a work is not measured purely by how many contexts it "works" in, but in that category, just ab nothing comes close to this if ur asking me.
Great album, such an easy listen. Lyrics are unintelligible so its distracting free.
One of the greatest shoegaze albums ever made. This album is a masterpiece and if you disagree you're wrong and can leave
I was very excited to listen to this. Cocteau Twins are a band I’ve always admired, but never really listened to other than a song that would pop up on the radio (back in the day) or a random playlist. I LOVED this album. It’s a perfect mix of stuff I like-atmospheric music, ethereal vocals, a chill vibe. I am a music first person, so honestly I couldn’t care less that you can’t understand the lyrics. I’m looking forward to listening to more of their music.
Didn't understand 99% of the lyrics, but this was a delightfully dreamy pop journey.
If this album had a texture, it would be tinfoil, glitter and dried tears stuck with honey to an amplifier.
Love it. Married my wife here, and have learned in recent years that Las Vegas isn’t heaven, but pretty damn close.
If dream pop as a genre had followed in the footsteps of this album for how varied, layered, and enegetic but wonderful it is instead or the most boring tropes of atmospheric pop, I think the genre would be actually good. Anyway, wonderful album, I feel like I love its sounds more and more as time goes on
Pleasantly surprised, banger of an album
I first stumbled up this album 5 years ago and was instantly mesmerized. The dream-like soundscape mixed with the ethereal almost unintelligible lyrics is a beautiful experience that leaves you feeling like your floating carelessly through the cosmos.
This album feels like bouncing on clouds. 10/10
I've been meaning to listen to this album for a long goddamn time and today was finally the day I did. And oh my god. I genuinely can't believe what's tickling my ears right now. It sure lives up to the name, because this thing is so heavenly. Every song feels like a psychedelic voyage, but it still is hidden behind stuff like I expect out of shoegaze-esc music. This is amazing.
A masterpiece – and one I've heard countless times. My favorite Cocteaus record frequently flips between HoLV and Blue Bell Knoll, but objectively... Heaven or Las Vegas is probably the clear winner.
A truly dreamy and captivating album, with a surprisingly poppy edge that blends perfectly with its lush, atmospheric soundscape. The vocals and instrumentation merge seamlessly, creating something that feels almost otherworldly, yet still accessible. A cohesive and immersive experience that stays with you long after it ends. 5/5
One of those bands where I find myself listening more to the bands they’ve influenced. I know I like Cocteau Twins, and if it wasn’t for them, most of the bands I adored in the 90s probably wouldn’t have existed, I just rarely listen to them. A wrong I will right on the back of immersing myself in this gem. Some of the tracks, in particular the title track, have somehow been engrained in the psyche over the years, but it was a real treat to hear them again in the context of the album. If you need me, I’ll be down a Cocteau Twins rabbit hole.
They say ignorance is bliss. I don’t know what this album is about, and I hope I never do. Timeless classic. Thank you Liz.
Great
This album finds Cocteau Twins at the height of their powers. The band's sound (which is practically in a genre of its own) reaches full flower on these glorious and mesmerizing tracks.
absolutely beautiful stuff right here.
This is easily in my top ten records of all time. No need to review it. Just listen and you'll know why.
an absolute pleasure to get this album on a beautiful june day! dreamy summer light linen shirt of an album
classic
I love this album so much. It’s my second time listening to it and it’s even better now.
so good
This is the second album on here that I’ve already listened to, and what do you know it’s another favorite of mine.
4.5/5 Opalescent Dreams You Can Drown In Review: This isn’t an album. It’s a shimmering hallucination wrapped in a Scottish fog. Elizabeth Fraser’s voice doesn’t sing — it levitates. The words are half-coherent, like overhearing an angel speak in a language you almost remember from childhood dreams. Every track is like falling in love mid-fainting spell.
I find this such a pleasant listen all the way through. I also really enjoy made up lyrics since I can never tell real ones. whenninevveneahlafivestars
I'm a big shoegaze/dreampop slut, so I'm biased, but this is one of the best earlier albums of the genre. I've already listened to this album a couple times before and it don't miss. Just listened to it again two more times.
This one is pretty damn good. One of my favourite albums of all time. Definitely not my favourite Cocteau Twins album, but that just goes to show how good the Cocteau Twins are. This album's vocal performances are such an incredible display of raw emotion. Some tracks are beautiful, some tracks are sad, some tracks are happy, some tracks are bitter. If you try to attach English lyrics to it, you miss the point-- you are speaking the wrong language.
I've never quite settled on an opinion on dream pop, but I've heard some songs from this, and I was pretty confident I would like, but not necessarily love it. However, Cocteau Twins proved me wrong. From the start, the sound of this hooked me, Heaven Or Las Vegas sounds glassy and almost futuristic. It just has a kind of ethereal sheen that I liked a lot more than I thought. Although what I really ended up staying for here is the songs. I had a slow, creeping realization that song after song, Cocteau Twins were sticking the landing. The worst songs on here are engaging and catchy, and the best are really genre defining. The bow on the whole thing is that we end with one of the stronger songs, Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires. One other thing I'd like to mention is that the vocals and "lyrics" here are fascinating. The vocals are *very* ethereal, to the extent that almost no lyrics are comprehensible, and in fact, the lyrics aren't published anywhere (again as far as I know). This frames Elizabeth Fraser's voice as an instrument in a way that I usually see in more extreme genres of music with less conventionally sung vocals. Hearing something like this in a context like dreampop achieves a really interesting effect. I really don't have more to say, I was shocked by how much I loved this.
sjukt bra
Liked this one, very poppy, very pleasant in all the good and bad ways... Not 5 stars, but easy a 4 and since it put me in a good mood, 4.5.
One of my Top 10 favorite albums of all time. Delicious. Ethereal. Perfection.
Will always be a top 20 fav album ever
One of my Holy Trinity of early 90s dream-pop / shoegaze (along with Loveless by My Bloody Valentine and Souvlaki by Slowdive). Untouchable, totally revolutionized the idea of vocals as just another instrument. You don't try to pay attention to the lyrics; they just swirl around you amidst the guitars and synthesizers. 10/10
oh my goodness oh my god im gonna bust. amazing album very important for me i could talk in depth about the songs but im lazy heaven las vegas very amazing frou foxes very amazing and the rest of them too. anyway here's something i wrote for my shitty rym listening log: this was a very important album in the development of my taste, its where i first got hooked on the taste of that sweet dreamy etherealness provided by dream pop and shoegazers. i dont remember how i discovered shoegaze but the first artist in my shoegaze playlist is wisp so it was probably from tiktok. when i first discovered shoegaze i listened to a bunch of tiktok shoegazers, random songs from the spotify shoegaze playlist, and catherine wheel of all bands. the cocteau twins dont make shoegaze at all but they got me back into dreamy music and theres a lot of dreamy shoegaze out there so it counts. anyway heaven or las vegas was my favorite song for a bit but frou foxes takes a close second. modern me again. that was shitty but idc i love this music so much
Heat stroke dreams
New to me. Absolutely divine. Very ahead of its time.
The fact that this album is so beloved by just about anyone who happens upon it makes me so happy, because if there's any album that deserves to have that effect on people, it's this one. A good chunk of the songs here I've listened to obsessively for many, many years. And while I do enjoy the hazy production that feels like a flashback to the most perfect moments in your life, it's never been what kept me so attached to the music here, ultimately. Instead, the production always just felt complementary to the real star here, vocalist Elizabeth Fraser. She is perfect, her melodies and choruses are irresistible, her falsettos, harmonies, vibratos...everything about her vocals is just angelic. I don't even mind the fact that her voice is drenched in reverb; it just works. I love the way her vocals just hover alongside the atmosphere on the opener 'Cherry-coloured Funk' during that earwormy chorus. The vocal melody of 'Fifty-fifty Clown' feels like something so nostalgic - like the very first memory I could've possibly ever had...whatever it may be. It has this comforting, lulling effect that's the epitome of innocence. The title track, aside from being the most easily catchy song here, is the only time I can consistently understand what Elizabeth is saying (at least in the chorus). Because if there's anything that amplifies this album's already very dream-like atmosphere, it's Elizabeth's very difficult-to-grasp speech pattern. It's what English must sound like to someone who doesn't know English pretty much. While I usually stick to my favorite crop of songs as opposed to revisiting the entire album whenever I want my 'Heaven or Las Vegas' fix, I'm happy I revisited it this time, because I fell in love with two new songs that I had previously neglected for whatever reason. 'I Wear Your Ring' I remember loving, but completely forgot how utterly gorgeous that core vocal melody was. And 'Fotzepolitic' is the other song here that quickly became another favorite, god, it's so fucking good, can't believe I ignored this song for so long. I know I've sort of neglected the rest of the music here for the vocals, but I do want to emphasize that it's the perfect backdrop to Elizabeth. It's a perfect fusion of many '80s new-wavey and post-punk acts (the songs 'Iceblink Luck' and 'Wolf in the Breast' have instrumentals that sound straight out of The Cure's 'Disintegration'), and your more traditional pop-leaning shoegaze '90s stuff like with 'Cherry-coloured Funk'. And the darker closer gives genuine gothic rock vibes. Comfort music. This whole thing feels like a warm hug, blanket, and fire in a giant ice cave. Cocteau Twins really made something special with this album. Life can't be so bad when this exists, I mean it.
few albums have taken their sweet-ass time to grow on me quite like this one. if you asked me a few years ago, I would've told you I thought the Cocteau Twins, and this album in particular, were some of the most overhyped music in the history of the RYM charts. despite that, there's always something that keeps me coming back to Heaven... in the hopes that "maybe this will be the listen where I well and truly 'get it!'" I think this listen was the closest I've come so far. when all the elements fall perfectly into place—the programmed drums, the icy synthesizers, Robin Guthrie's cavernous guitar layering, Simon Raymonde's slinky basslines, and especially Elizabeth Fraser's shimmering voice—the results are tantalizing. my favorite is still the opener ("Cherry-Coloured Funk"), with it's incredible use of Fraser's falsetto in the chorus. this was also the first time I appreciated just how crafty the bridge of the title track is, or the post-chorus of "Fotzepolitic," or any number of other moments. whether or not the lyrics of these songs mean anything is anyone's guess, but they just have such a great sound about them. the main thing that held me back from a fuller enjoyment of this album on previous listens (and believe me, I've been trying for a few years now) was the production and mixing. however, what once sounded like a muddy, overly reverberated blend of gloop to my ears now has a lot more precision and care in it than I previously recognized. it definitely suffers a little bit from that 80s gloopiness, but if anything, the Twins use it to their advantage. I'm not sure what changed with my ears or my brain chemistry, but this listen was easily the most I've ever enjoyed this band! light 9/10.
-absolutely gorgeous album. I love the Cocteau Twins more each time I hear a song by them… this album was the beginning of my interest in them, I was super into it last year and it sounds better with every listen -I am convinced Elizabeth Fraser is a siren. her voice brings sooo much magic to these songs I can’t even pick which one I like best rip -Favorites are Cherry-Coloured Funk, Pitch The Baby, Fifty-Fifty Clown, and Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires
Apparently, "the kids" love dream pop, and it definitely seems like the genre has seen a recent resurgence. I'm grateful for this because in the past few years I've taken a closer look at many albums I've slept on. Of these, Heaven Or Las Vegas stands above the rest, a masterpiece of texture.
Our second album consisting primarily of unintelligible lyrics (not that that is a bad thing). Not sure what to say about this one that hasn't already been said. It's just lovely. A sound like no one else.
...so this is what us Scottish people sound like to outsiders?
Perfect album, great morphing of shoegaze with dreampop
My favorite bumper sticker of all time: stop honking I'm trying to figure out what Cocteau Twins are saying
A dizzying dazzlement, a marvelous mosaic of glimmering, gossamer evocations. Who knows what’s being sung when it’s so gorgeously rendered? One has long loved the record but only in listening for this exercise does the stage setting for Sigur Ros become clear. The chamber pop flourishes and structures, the moments of Beach Boyishness, little hints of Joni Mitchell in the phrasings and timbre of RF’s vocals. Fresh, effervescent and Exhilarating are the effects of its peculiar majesty. The closer soars in an understated, elegant sort of way, making one feel like everything will be okay, like a vaguely better (or bettered) person, that the world, sad and ethereal as it so often is, can also be fleetingly and redemptively, beautiful.
I wasn't sure what to expect off this one, but what a delightful surprise. Really lovely dream pop.
Supreme
always loved this one
seeeeeming to beeeeeeeaaaahhh
This was a summer, chill vibe, could easily see it coming out in the 2010s and being relevant as ever. 5*
already known banger
Maybe the sexiest album on the list. This whole album is dripping with a specific kind of tension that makes it a dream to listen to. They really pinoneered a sound all of their own and despite it influencing the shoegaze and dream pop genres, there’s still nothing else that really sounds like it. I could listen to this forever.
Feels euphoric
I started listening to Cocteau Twins this past year, including "Iceblink Luck" off this album. They were a Scottish group formed by guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Will Heggie. They started as gothic rock but developed their sound over time and became one of the purveyors of dream pop, a mix of alternative rock and neo-psychedelia that placed equal emphasis on atmosphere, sonic texture, and pop melody. This style was well-exemplified in their sixth album, Heaven or Las Vegas. This album felt like putting on a warm blanket, covered in the reverbed bass and drum machine, Robin's guitar hooks coated in ethereal effects, and Elizabeth Fraser's pillowy soprano vocals. The atmosphere never felt overwhelming; rather, there was a purpose to the swell. As for the lyrical content, while Elizabeth's words came off as more impenetrable, there is an emotional arc that she and the band went through. Towards the beginning, Elizabeth expressed her joy in giving birth and welcoming her first child Lucy Belle, particularly on "Pitch the Baby", and there is this celebration of life that is explored. That celebration starts to simmer as Elizabeth reflected on her tenuous relationship with Robin as her partner, particularly on a track like "I Wear Your Ring" where she is taking the role of mother for this child seriously and expected more involvement from him in childcare. The tone of the album grows darker from there, culminating in the closer "Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires", where bassist Simon Reymonde contemplated his father's passing. The transition of themes from birth to death seemed straightforward and well-executed. Heaven or Las Vegas is an amazing offering that showcases the dreamy ambience that Cocteau Twins delivered.
GOAT
Never heard of this album or this group so I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Really dreamy sound to it. I’ll definitely be listening to this album again. I relistened to this album a year later after relistening to the songs here and there and I had to bump it up from a 4 to a 5. I already enjoyed it right off the bat, but with time I gradually realized how amazing this album is.
goated
Gonna be a perfect addition to my karaoke playlist. Hang on, I’m seeing here… A classic album that encapsulates everything I love about the early ‘90s when it comes to the music scene. It’s iconic, beautiful, and endlessly listenable — super difficult to choose a single standout track off of this one.
really great album. cocteau twins is one of the groups i am really glad i discovered through this project. this album is so cool, so dreamy, from start to finish.
A (thankfully) highly-influential masterpiece that gets better every listen. 🙏🙏 Highlights: Heaven or Las Vegas, I Wear Your Ring, Wolf in the Breast, Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires Lowlight: The silence after the album ends
some people say they wish they could hear a song for the first time again. I feel the opposite here - I wish I could live in the immediate, familiar warmth this album gives me every time, the way listening to the best songs feel like greeting an old friend.
This is the 79th album I’m rating. I got very excited when I saw this album. I thought it would take me a while before I found an album I had already listened to and liked but I got one in my first 100. I abandoned talking about every song individually a while back but I want to talk about every song here one by one because it is in my top 10 albums of all time. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Already Added to my Playlist - Cherry-Coloured Funk, Pitch the Baby, Iceblink Luck, Fifty-Fifty Clown, Heaven or Las Vegas, I Wear Your Ring, Fotzepolitic, Wolf in the Breast, Road, River, and Rail, and Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires. Cherry-Coloured Funk - This is one of the best opening tracks of all time and it immediately tells you what kinda of an album you’re getting into. It is just perfect and I’ve probably listened to it a hundred times with how many times I’ve listened to this album. Immediately you are getting introduced to Elizabeth Fraser’s unique vocal style. Interestingly this is one of the few songs where there are official lyrics and they are in my opinion pretty cool. Pitch the Baby - Admittedly the first time I listened to this I didn’t like it but as time has gone on I’ve grown to appreciate this song. This is such a Cocteau Twins song. By that I mean it makes absolutely means no sense. Elizabeth Fraser said that she writes songs that make no sense only thinking about the way it sounds and this song makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. There is something very charming about that though and I’ve grown to appreciate it. Iceblink Luck - Pitch the Baby was very Cocteau Twins but this is in my opinion the most Cocteau Twins song. Iceblink Luck as a phrase makes no sense and I swear I hear her say cherry cola at around the one minute mark. This is probably the group’s most iconic song. Interestingly though in this song you can definitely make out a lot more words than in their other songs. Fifty-Fifty Clown - Elizabeth Fraser’s vocals are really quite unique in the music landscape. Her vocals helps to create this ethereal atmosphere with the way that the words are mostly unintelligible. Most musicians tend to avoid heavy effects and dense production but the band loved it and I think it creates a very unique very good album. Heaven or Las Vegas - I might’ve lied when talking about Iceblink Luck because this song is very iconic. What does Heaven or Las Vegas mean? I’m not sure but despite lyrics that are very hard to decipher Elizabeth Fraser has said that the lyrics in the songs always hold meaning. I don’t think it matters though what Elizabeth Fraser is really saying anyways all that matters is what you think she means and how it feels. Also, Heaven or Las Vegas will always be stuck in my head because it is just so so catchy. I Wear Your Ring - This song is a perfect example of how the band creates this really nice atmospheric vibe that dream pop is known for. Although not my favorite song on the album I think it would do really well as a blueprint for dream pop because it incorporates all of the aspects of the genre really well. Fotzepolitic - When I first heard this song I wasn’t a big fan but I’m not sure what was wrong with me because this is just great. It creates this perfect dreamlike atmospheric vibe and it just feels good. When I listen to this song in my mind I think of spending time with the one you love and I just love it. Wolf in the Breast - This was the very first song I ever listened to by the Cocteau Twins and it really just drew me in. It made me want to listen to more so I did research on the band and when I saw they were dream pop I stopped listening. I don’t know why but for some reason I had this really negative perception of dream pop. There was still a part of me though that couldn’t help but me drawn in and later I went back to listen to the full song. I’m glad I did too because this song is amazing. It is very very good. Road, River, and Rail - I’ve spent a lot of time talking about Elizabeth Fraser but there are two other members of the band so lets talk about Robin Guthrie. He was and probably still is an incredible producer who handled much of the effects and let me just say the effects on this album and especially this song are great. I think that him never having any formal musical training made his guitar and compositions really interesting so thank you Robin Guthrie for not getting any sort of music education. Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires - That moment around the 2 minute mark where the song changes is simply incredible. Don’t get me wrong it is a good song before then but that moment makes it one of the best songs of all time. Simon Raymonde describes the way the band got together ad a beautiful accident and I’m glad it happened because Fraser’s vocals, Guthrie’s guitar, and Raymonde’s bass are all perfect. Raymonde is probably one of the best writers of all tile and really the whole band wrote some truly great music together. A perfect way to end the album on a song with what I feel is a very happy vibe. All in all I liked 10/10 songs. There isn’t much to say that I haven’t already so I’ll say this the Cocteau Twins are one of the three best groups or artists or whatever to come out of Europe.
ETHEREAL CLASSIC
Heaven or vegas and fotzepolitic are stand outs. Synthy, power balledy. Really good stuff. Reminds me of cranberries. Like if the cranberries, enya, and sythwave had a baby. Surreal, ethereal. Dreampop.
LOOOOOOVE omg
Underwent a bit of character development in 2022-23, and Cherry-coloured Funk could just about be on the first 5 tracks to the soundtrack of that period. I get misty-eyed and nostalgic at the opening riff of this tune, sometimes even now. What an opener. What a great song to listen to as you've just opened the cafe and the sun's coming up on a crisp early winter morning (as I did many times, fuck off Marko). This album, uninterrupted is going to be an absolute treat this morn- - Nevermind, my work phone's ringing. As for the rest of the album, I've had a couple tracks outside of the big 2 saved, but I can honestly appreciate it even more in sequence. I might grab this as a vinyl. As lame as this come across, this album is what I imagine the 90s did sound like. Heaven or Las Vegas even my Dad liked, and doesn't like anything I show him. Fifty-fifty clown is the only track here I'm not so big on.
Due to a personal traumatic event I encountered involving a 9 hour overnight Jetstar flight from Osaka Itami to Cairns Airport, alcohol induced delirium, snus, and a hallucinatory apparition of a female passenger next to me; I will be declining to review this one in detail, and instead give a rating accordingly. You know it's a phenomenal listen anyways. Listening to this a year on from that experience has made me had a pavlovian reaction to this album like a 30 years sober person picking up heroin again.
Wow, not a band I am really familiar with but this was an awesome little trip of an album. The ethereal, dream pop style really just works for me. You could maybe knock the style for being inherently a bit 'samey' but when the resulting quality is this good I can't complain. Big ups to Scotland for doing some heavy lifting while your counterparts fail to keep the British end up with their continuous output of the most irritating music known to man
Today we’re diving into Heaven or Las Vegas, the seminal 1990 album from the Scottish dream pop pioneers, the Cocteau Twins. Now, when it comes to Heaven or Las Vegas, you’re talking about one of the most defining albums of the dream pop genre. The Cocteau Twins have been shaping ethereal, lush, and deeply atmospheric music for years by this point, but with Heaven or Las Vegas, they hit a high-water mark that’s still influencing artists to this day. Let’s talk about the sound first. This record has this otherworldly, almost celestial quality to it. It feels weightless but in a very immersive, enveloping kind of way. The production, courtesy of the band and their long-time collaborator, Robin Guthrie, is crystal clear, yet it still maintains that dreamlike haze, which is part of what makes this album so mesmerizing. The synths, the guitars, the reverb—it all swirls around like some kind of atmospheric cloud, and it just pulls you into its depths. Then there’s Elizabeth Fraser’s voice. Good grief. If you thought her vocal prowess was impressive before, she takes it to a whole new level here. The vocals on Heaven or Las Vegas are completely untethered from earthly constraints. They can go from serene and gentle to ferocious and emotional in a split second, and she delivers one of the most evocative and haunting performances I’ve ever heard. The way she sings, it almost feels like she’s in a completely different realm, floating above everything, casting these spellbinding vocal melodies over the mix. The songs themselves? Lush, emotive, and transcendental. Tracks like Cherry-Coloured Funk and Pitch the Baby are such perfect representations of the Cocteau Twins' ethereal style—there's a fluidity in the way the guitars weave around Fraser’s voice, and every note feels like it’s carrying some kind of emotion. Then you have a track like Iceblink Luck, which pairs a gorgeous, buoyant melody with Fraser's nearly indecipherable lyrics, creating this sense of ungraspable beauty that is the hallmark of the band’s sound. I mean, sure, a lot of these songs are not easy to pin down in terms of meaning. Elizabeth Fraser's lyrics are often abstract and impressionistic, and that’s kind of the point. It’s not about literal interpretation here—it’s about the emotions and feelings that these sounds evoke. Whether you're drifting through the sublime instrumental waves of Fotzepolitic or getting swept away by the intoxicating, dream-like state of Heaven or Las Vegas itself, the music communicates on a level that words can’t fully express. Now, there’s a slight shift on this album compared to some of the band's earlier works. There’s a poppier edge to the production here—more accessible, maybe—but it never compromises the band's signature atmosphere. The dreamy textures remain intact, but it’s a little more refined, a little more polished, and it feels like the Cocteau Twins are reaching out for something more universal, all while staying true to their unique voice. If there’s any downside to the record, it's that some of the tracks blend into each other a bit, and if you're not fully immersed in the mood, certain parts can feel a tad repetitive. But that’s really a minor issue in the grand scheme of things, especially considering how deeply emotional and immersive this album can be when you let it wash over you. Overall, Heaven or Las Vegas is an absolute classic. It's dream pop at its finest—elegant, atmospheric, haunting, and genuinely transcendent. Whether you’re a longtime Cocteau Twins fan or just getting into their music, this album is a must-listen. 10/10
I am an unapologetic dream pop fanatic and I will stand for no slander of Cocteau Twins. This album especially is something special to me, my first introduction to the genre. It's said that this is their most accessible and commercially friendly album, which may be true but I still love it both on its own merit and for opening me to albums like The Moon and the Melodies and Blue Bell Knoll. 2:50 and 4:16 during the title track are peak, it's like being carried away by a musical rip tide and peacefully drowning in torrential water. It's a musical triumph and perfectly captures for me the feeling of happily accepting powerlessness. There are no skips on this album, it's a full experience. Cocteau Twins poured their soul into this album, every note feels deliberate in constructing a dreamscape for you to get lost in, even the odd legible word feels like when you see a hyper-realistic familiar face in a dream that you know you've never seen in real life. God help whoever is around my house for the next few weeks because they're going to be hearing more Cocteau Twins than they ever should. Highlights: Cherry-coloured Funk, Pitch the Baby, Iceblink Luck, Heaven or Las Vegas, I Wear Your Ring, Fotzepolitic, Road, River and Rail, Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires
Так, чисто музично, тут все ще відчувається натхнення Siouxsie and the Banshees та The Cure, але із іншим "емоційним забарвленням", що наче як, прийшло десь з The Dreaming (1982) від відомої Kate Bush.
One of my favorites. Best of dream pop and pioneer of shoegaze.
dream pop perfection
The best word I can think of that I would use to describe this album is "dreamy", this is a very calm and atmospheric album, the synths, and the guitar all work together in a majestic way, the lead singers vocals were faint and blended into the instrumentation in a way which sounded absolutely amazing. I can hear the inspiration it had on some of my favorite albums ever and I love it. Rating: Fantastic (Decent ☆☆☆☆☆) Favorite Tracks: Iceblink Luck, Heaven or Las Vegas, I Wear Your Ring, and Wolf In The Breast.
Classic album with an amazing soundscape.
A really fantastic album. It hit me halfway through that I would believe this album was put out last year, because it just holds up that well. Interesting, creative, dreamy, and perfect for a rainy day.
Cocteau Twins to me seems to be a group who's all about creating an atmosphere and an aesthetic with their songs. Hypnotic and weird, with psychedelic reverbed non-sense created for a certain vibe. I have listened to the hits on this album many times, though I've never listened to it front to back. This should be a breeze to get through for my musical palatte. Cherry-coloured Funk One of my favourite songs of the era. Fantastic reverb, the repetitiveness of the guitar feels trippy. I think the vocals are really good, I enjoy how they sit differently in the mix. The vocal melodies are super catchy, and the non-sense lyrics add mystery to the track. The bass sound is so soft and comfy. There's also something strangely nostalgic about the song, sounds like a familiar reoccuring dream (probably where the term dream-pop comes from). Just magnificently produced. One of my all-time favourite songs. 5/5. Pitch the Baby Bouncy. Confrontational bass. The heavy reverb sort of makes the song "swirl" in the ear. Great chorus, the faster vocals tightens a very spacious sound grounding it. There's also a really nice energy to the vocal melody which caps off the chorus, releasing the tightness briefly. Unique and interesting. 5/5 Iceblink Luck Post-punky bassline. I think the vocals are mixed a bit too loudly to start. The chorus sounds like if you slowed down an ABBA song and played it backwards. Love the sound of the instrumental break. Is missing a bit of a kick, part of it feels like it never resolves its ideas. Like it. 4/5 Fifty-Fifty Clown Sounds atmospheric. Has very liquid synths. The drum beat is very of the era. I do enjoy how the chorus rises a lot. The singing in the background has a nice tingle to it. Extremely unique. 5/5 Heaven or Las Vegas The title track is probably the most cohesive song on the album structure-wise. Insanely catchy. Iconic bassline, iconic synth line as well. The chorus is so large and reverby, it's extremely warm and stimulating with all the stuff going on at once. I think the drum beat fits the vibe really well. Dreamy and psychedellic. Fantastic song. 5/5 I Wear Your Ring The synths at the start sound a bit dated. The "simlish" is especially noticable here. I think the vocal layering here is so fun. Winds down nicely into the bridge. Decent. 3.5/5 Fotzepolitic Another fantastic bassline. Drowning instrumental, and satisfying vocals. Meditative. Bursts out into some almost triumphant synths. The ending is a bit abrupt. Great. 4.5/5 Wolf in the Breast The guitar is a bit boring. The percussion adds an element of sharpness which contrasts well with the softness of the reverb. That's a cool drone. Not crazy about the vocals on this one, seem a bit unfocused. The "left ear" vocal is really catchy. Good song, warmed more up to it by the end. 4/5 Road, River and Road. The distant and cold guitar and the warm and fuzzy bass work surprisingly well together. Emotional performance even though the lyrics are just random gibberish. Satisfying. 4/5 Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires A darker moodier vibe, the eerie guitar drone in the background at the start creates an haunted vibe, only enhanced by the repeating piano. The shoegazy switchup with the ghostly background vocals is fantastic. Builds upon itself. Nice vibe, good closer. 4.5/5 It's a sound I expected to like and a sound I did like. I don't really have much to say about it that I haven't said in my reactions to the individual songs. Produced performed and arranged marvelously. Great to listen to in the dark, vivid and colourful. My only minor gripe with the album is that at times I think having actual lyrics would add a lot more direction to some of the songs, the gibberish does take a bit away from what could be some more powerful moments. It's not a real problem though, just an artistic choice. Really like it, will revisit more than just the hits. Fave song. Cherry-coloured Funk, fave new discovery: Fifty-Fifty Clown Least fave song. I Wear Your Ring
Every other dream pop album can go home, this is literally the peak of what the genre can do. Every song is so space-y, it makes you feel as though you are constantly hovering slightly above the ground so that you're still in touch with what is happening around you, yet you'll find yourself swaying with each and every track, in a trance like state that does not break until the album finishes with one of the greatest songs of all time. You may not always understand the lyrics, but you know every emotion behind them is real by the intensity of every instrument, along with the amazing, angelic delivery from Elizabeth Fraser. Drugs are not needed to get swept off your feet by the love and just general musicianship, and capturing every season of the year on top of that is truly expert song craftsmanship. In short, I love this album, its dreamy.
Love me some shoegaze
Grangemouth finest.
One of my favorite albums ever
Heaven or Las Vegas is where Cocteau Twins found their sweet spot, blending their signature dream pop sound with something that feels simultaneously ethereal and grounded. Fraser’s voice, more discernible yet as haunting as ever, weaves through lush, shimmering soundscapes, while Guthrie’s production creates an atmosphere that feels like floating through a dream you never want to wake up from. Tracks like "Iceblink Luck" and "Pitch the Baby" encapsulate the album’s delicate balance between personal turmoil and celestial beauty, all wrapped in melodies that somehow manage to be both elusive and instantly captivating. Its influence echoes through the work of artists like M83, Beach House, and Japanese Breakfast. Heaven or Las Vegas is a rare moment where experimentation and accessibility coexist in perfect harmony—proof that sometimes, the best music is the stuff that floats just above the surface, waiting to pull you in.
Is this the best Cocteau Twins album? It might be. How can you make such clever and intricate and beautiful melodies? I can’t get enough!
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 HEAVEN OR LAS VEGAS
A beautiful, ethereal album. I knew within the first two tracks that this was at least a 4/5. By the time it reached "Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer," I wasn't ready for it to end. If that doesn't say this is a great album, I don't know what does. This is what this app is for!
+ Influential to modern pop music I'm drawn to + Production stands out for the time period + No duds + Leaves me wanting more
10/10. This is such a beautiful album!!! The lyrics are unintelligible, but there is something really mystic about the music. It's gorgeous!!!
Not sure if this one can be topped - one of my favourite albums of all time. Every time I listen to it I notice something different it never gets boring. Elizabeth Fraser is the absolute GOAT. Wish there were more than 5 stars.
lovely, lush, dreamy sounds Liz Fraser has an amazing voice
very chill and i like that it’s jsut the music and their voices making you feel something
Dreamy, sublime
I’ve not listened to ‘Heaven of Las Vegas’ for a number of years, and despite always loving it, was still entirely unprepared for just how good it actually is. Jesus Christ. As is always the case with Cocteau Twins; I have no idea what any of this is about. Despite being more lyrically intelligible than they'd previously been, Elizabeth Fraser may as well have been making random noises for as much as you can understand anything she’s saying. None of this matters though, as you still understand everything. This album is like a monument to uncertainty and desperation filtered through dream logic. It’s presumably what the title is referring to; Am I actually in heaven or am I in a gaudy, corrupted Las Vegas recreation of the real thing? This is an album of shifting glances, second guessing and desperate longing. It’s all there in songs like ’I Wear Your Ring’ which almost sound like Fraser engaged in a loosing battle to escape out of the drooping confinement of the songs slushy instrumentation, the record’s pensive power ballad of a title track and of course, ’Cherry-Coloured Funk.’ I can’t think of many more things in music that are as much of an emotional gut punch as the first time Fraser goes into falsetto on that songs chorus. The sheer naked vulnerability and almost naive hope that comes though in that moment… it’s almost too much. I am also amazed by just how ahead of its time ‘Heaven of Las Vegas’ actually is. It does still sound very much like a 90’s record, just not one THIS early from that decade. You can almost hear later released songs like ‘Venus as a Boy’ by Bjork, ‘Missing’ by Everything but the Girl and ‘Confide in Me’ by Kylie bubbling under the surface here, starting to take form. This album is just too good. It’s just an endlessly addictive world this so easy to slide back into. I have no idea why it took me so long to come back to it, and will now reassess all life decisions that led to this.
Loved this! Dreamy, floaty, floral, relaxing. Had always intended to check out Cocteau Twins but never got around to it before, so I’m glad this finally forced my hand and I’ll be seeking out their other albums immediately. Made me think of Kate Bush, Kate Miller-Heidke, even Magdalena Bay. Also this is a strange reference but I Wear Your Ring reminded me of a piece from the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack called Aquatic Ambience which I listen to probably too often. So many great tracks, I can only understand like 2% of the lyrics (and frequently wondered what language I was even hearing) but it’s all so melodic, maybe how mermaids would sound.
Phenomenal 10/10. New favorite album second to muse
it always makes me laugh when I look up the lyrics to cocteau twins songs bc there’s a good chance it’s actually gibberish
one of my favorite artists and i already know and LUV this album :)))
One of the nearly perfect albums. I loved a couple of songs that I had in my own personal rotation, but I held off on listening to the album on my own because I figured I would get it on here someday. Amazing.
beautifully written, the melodies are soo good.
What a little gem. I had forgotten about this band and it was great to hear them again. I got hints of Chrissie Hind and Kate Bush vocally at times throughout the album. The guitar sound that you only get with top class indie music was great throughout. Brilliant 👏
Loved this, I hadn't ever listened to the Cocteau Twins before but will definitely be listening more
A heavenly atmosphere one could live in, love iceblink luck and the title track
Listened to them for the first time last year after Cherry Coloured Funk appeared in a music league. It became my most listened to song and these guys became my most listened to artist. Love this album, easy 5/5.
Another one of my mother's influence, I listened to a descent amount of Cocteau Twins growing up, albeit I can't remember which albums, so this may or may not sound familiar. I have a particular love for Garlands, so I expect to like this album a lot. 'Iceblink Link' is a song that evokes a lot of nostalgia, so I can comfortably conclude I have listened to this album before. What I love about this album is the undercurrent of new wave goth is there but it has this more optimistic and melodic sound throughout. The ambiguous lyrics add to it well, and it has nice highs and lows.
An absolute classic. Another album I never tire of listening to.
One of the best musical discoveries I've had in my life. Thanks to Steven Wilson. It sounds so different and original. The way the band works with the guitar sounds and the layers of voices by the great Elizabeth Fraser results in a very pleasant musical atmosphere. It's the type of album that you get involved in listening to from start to finish. Everyone should listen to this album obligatory.
An all timer. Shimmering, ethereal, beyond "dreamy", conjuring a thick wave of sound that's warm but forceful. Emotive and human and dark but pure. Their other work that I've heard is good but they're on another level here. I went into this expecting I'd think a few tracks were a little weak, but everything on here shines.
literally nothing beats this album. even when i'm not listening i think about "singing on a feeboo stree" every day at least once. one of the many albums that makes me think of my wonderful boyfriend.
In my mind, no matter what I am always presented with one of two scenes. Dark green patterns in a pitch black world. These patterns are all squares and triangles in straight lines that turn 45 degree angles at a time. These patterns continue until the world becomes nothing but angles in the darkness. Marble pillars infinitely growing like wires tangling everything in my vision. They are engraved with vines and leaves that progressively fade as they grow. These pillars turn into a perfect striation filling my vision. I can't remember when this started. I feel it's always been a part of my life. I always thought the world I lived in would return to that. When I listened to this, the marble untangled. The sharp angles became rounded. The world became saturated. This album made me learn there were more patterns.
I get the same feeling listing to this as I do when I wake up from a really lovely dream. uplifting, comforting, vivid, but without any true understanding of what just happened.
Feel like we’ve had a stretch of pretty mediocre albums, but this one fucking rocked! I’d never heard of this band at all so this was a nice surprise. They remind me a bit of Jesus and Mary chain, but more dynamic. Bit of the cranberries and sinead O’Connor with the Celtic flair to the vocals and off beat but hooky melodies. I hear a lot of them in the 2010s indie world, like passion pit and sleigh bells and tame impala. All that said, and despite these references, I’m giving this a 5 because, in addition to sounding good, their sound itself feels wholly original to me, like an unexplored land, at least to my ears. Found myself muttering ‘fuck yeah’ at a certain turn or beat drop several times alone in my car while blasting this. There’s something really exciting about hearing a whole new sound at 35, after 30 years of listening and playing music every day. Just when this exercise was starting to bore me a little, feel a whole new appreciation and gratitude for all this awesome music we’ve listened to.
interesting, different from what I expected.
Heaven, please!
Perfect dreamy ethereal vibes. Wonderful layers of sound and a lot of musical texture to pick apart. A little split on if it's a 4 or 5 just because I don't see myself reaching for it often. BUT for the right mood I think this is very hard to beat.
Stunning. 9/10
Really fresh album!! I had hear of the Cocteau Twins before listening to this album, but I wasn’t aware of their creative talent and range. “Heaven or Las Vegas” was a ton of fun, and I would happily recommend it to others!! Fav song: Fotzepolitic
Pre-listening thoughts: Bro I never have any clue what the Cocteau Twins are saying but I bet this is going to slap regardless Post/during listening thoughts: if someone asked me to transcribe these lyrics by ear I think I’d get maybe four words correct per song. But my god these instrumentals are so lush! This is a wonderful album with fantastic production and lovely harmonies that make up for the fact that I can’t understand 90% of the words. 9/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: Cherry Colored Funk, Iceblink Luck, Heaven or Las Vegas, Fotzepolitic, Frou Frou Foxes (but this is a no skip album) Least fav tracks: none
Already listened. Greatest thing to ever happen.
Harmonic beautiful and atmospheric, sets such a magical joyful mood
i wish i could play this record for my the cure- and my bloody valentine-loving 16 year-old self.
Really pleasant and nice
Now THIS is the type of music I enjoy. The vibes are immaculate, the songs are all similar but not in a dull way, the vocals float over the beat beautifully. I was immediately transported to summer by the lake with a beer in my hand staring off into the horizon. Not a skip on here and I’ll actually go back and listen to this again & again. This is why I came to this site in the first place!
dreamy
One of the best albums all time
Overwhelmingly exquisite and to an outstandingly effervescent degree. The guitar effects are a constantly fizzying masterclass and the songs are a mixture of crazily beautiful and uplifting to completely chilling and haunting. I feel like I am swimming in a lost underwater kingdom filled entirely with cherry cola and a mermaid siren is singing the most gorgeous indecipherable melodies.
WOW. i had no idea what to expect and this blew my socks clean off and into smithereens. trippy, vibey, shades of a sound i recognize (years later) as very similar to beach house (who i love). super super glad this was on here and i got a chance to listen to it.
Love this one, perfect for an overcast day. Soothing tunes to ease me back into the workforce. Thanks, Twins!
Probably my favorite Cocteau Twins album. I can’t get enough of this ethereal dream pop shoegaze band.
Somehow the Cocteau Twins slipped by my attention in the 80's and 90's. I was impressed by this album. Swirling wispy gorgeous vocals and abstract lyrics over 80's dance beats. But the best part is that despite Fifty-Fifty Clown, which I could skip, the entire album was good. I found the right soundtrack for a rainy PNW weekend. And glad I could listen to it throughout the weekend!
This and Treasure are perfect.
God.
Seems to be very striking compared to their older albums. I was previously familiar with Treasure and the handful of eps that followed and not hearing the buildup from the mid 80s, this album feels very refined. I'm not sure I've ever noticed how good Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymond can not only play their instruments, but also operate together as a unit. The drum programming alone is really impressive, which sounds very fluid and tasteful. Elizabeth Fraser is in top form here, whose unique voice, probably overdubbed and double tracked, and intentually esoteric lyrics are about feeling rather than knowing. The result is a very beautiful and strange album which possesses a lot of potential to fill arenas, but they instead pull back, leaving room for mystery.
Ridiculously good omg. I think that first track is particularly addictive.
just undeniably one of the most consistent bands of all time, each album better than the last, with this their masterpiece... some of the most sublime music in the history of pop
First track is awesome Oh this is good. Fifty fifty clown is great. Chilled out. I'll be honest, the Vibe on this is so different than I was expecting. I was expecting more banshees, and this is more like 80s pop vibes (despite being from 1990). The vocals are like an instrument. The layering of the vocals is outstanding. It's beautiful. Not a bad song on the album 5 stars
Gonna be honest I needed a lyric sheet for this one
Ethereal lush goodness. So beautiful. I don't even know how to describe it. Fav songs: Heaven or Las Vegas, I Wear Your Ring, Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires
Perfect record
This is what I would classify as a perfect album. There is not one bad song. The album is beautifully structured and is a pure pleasure to listen to. it build to a crescendo in the form of the title track and then slowly descends into the incredible closing track. I have been listening to it for 30 plus years and i never get tired of it. I own this record of course
The greatest dream pop album of all time and one of the greatest albums in general.
I love Elizabeth Fraser and the Cocteau Twins. Their music is timeless, ethereal, absolutely beautiful.
BANGER, I love the Cocteau twins
yes
A beautifully rich album. IDK wtf they're saying half the time and it somehow doesn't matter in the slightest.
This is the only album of theirs I can really listen to due to Liz Frasers weird vocals on all the earlier stuff. She's a bit more normal sounding on this one where you can almost make out what she's singing 🤣 I love dreampop and shoegaze but, brilliant as it is, I'm not sure I'd recommend this as an entry into the genre. Better starting with bands like Ride, Slowdive, Lush (specifically Spooky as it was produced by Robin Guthrie) and then revisiting this to appreciate it more.
Absolutely loved this. I didn't think it would land with me from the description but I'll definitely be checking out the rest of their discography.
Loved it.
Sounds so dreamy and amazing, the three track run ending with the title track is so good
Left me unsettled, curious and at awe.
This is such a good album, I don't even care what she sings
Terrific production that ages so well. Otherworldly vocal performances and instrumentation that is solid and lilting at the same time.
Thy Will Be Done). Otros discos esenciales de 1990 también fueron: The KLF- Chill Out, NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE - Ragged glory, THE BLACK CROWES - Shake your money maker, NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS - The good son, GALAXIE 500 - This is our music, YO LA TENGO - Fakebook, THE HOUSE OF LOVE - Butterfly album, Violator de Depeche Mode, Goo de Sonic Youth, Behaviour de Pet Shop Boys, Fear of a Black Planet de Public Enemy, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got de Sinéad O'Connor, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic de The Sundays, Jordan: The Comeback de Prefab Sprout, The Comforts of Madness de Pale Saints, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan- Mustt Mustt, Mazzy Star- She Hangs Brightly, Blaze- 25 years later, Happy Mondays- Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, The LA´s- The LA´s, Ride- Nowhere, Dee Lite- World clique, A Tribe Called Quest- People´s instictive travels and the paths of rhythm... También: IGGY POP - Brick by brick, PIXIES - Bossanova, THE POGUES - Hell's ditch, THE WATERBOYS - Room to roam, Ritual de lo Habitual de Jane's Addiction, The Razors Edge de AC/DC, Los Enemigos- La vida mata, Fugazi- Repeater, Veneno En La Piel -Radio Futura, Hunted By The Snake- Cancer Moon...
An absolutely gorgeous album. I hadn't appreciate this band in the past, but this year I spent time going through their catalog. Their work and Fraser's vocals are airy, ethereal, and lush. Two of my favorite songs are on this album: Cherry-coloured Funk and Heaven or Las Vegas. What a lovely listen. It made my day.
Flipante!!!!
A dreamy masterpiece. Sparkling and hazy.
Ethereal bliss
I absolutely loved this album! It felt fresh and freeing and floaty in a way that I can’t really describe. The singing was gorgeous, and so melodic, even if it didn’t really say anything, and the orchestration and harmonies were absolutely beautiful. I’ll be coming back to this album again and again. I’m very glad I have been introduced to it!
Angelic. I loved it
Right off the bat, love Cherry-Coloured Funk starting the album. The whole album helped regulate my nervous system. I’d listen again.
❤️
First time hearing! Lovely themes. Totally unique approach to sound. A classi!
forever fave <3
auditory bliss
Absolutely beautiful sound that predated the indie dream pop scene, even if the lyrics are a bit incomprehensible. Easy 5.
I love you
already listened, amazing album
Masterpiece. This album means a lot to me. It's without flaw.
An old faith that I have heard of hundreds if not thousands of times
A good album, I liked Cherry-coloured Dunk, Heaven or Las Vegas, I Wear Your Ring and Fotzepolitic. My favorite song on the album was Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires.
Honestly quite liked this one as well, I enjoyed the ethereal vibes and I've added some songs to a playlist
5/5. I don't know what it is about this band, I don't normally enjoy shoegaze or even unintelligible lyrics, but this creates a beautiful and uplifting feeling while listening, akin to a mix between Abba and Sigur Ros. The vocalist is such a perfect choice for this album, which is why every Cocteau Twins album I've heard so far feels so unique and wonderful. Just each song stands on its own and creates an ethereal world while being down to Earth. Awesome album. Best Song: Cherry-Coloured Funk, I Wear Your Ring, Iceblink Luck
This band is so special. Their sound is so beautiful and compelling. I don’t have to love everything to know that this record is valuable. It’s imagination music. 5/5
I feel like Cocteau Twins was a band I first heard on MTV's 120 minutes back in the 80's. I'm sure I would have dismissed it because it wasn't metal. But my much younger self did that sort of thing frequently. In the last decade or so I found that I really enjoy the dream pop/shoegaze genre. It's been a pleasure to listen to this album again.
Brilliant, unique, ethereal
Love everything about this
My sister took me to see them in Paris in the Summer of ‘96. It was my first ever concert and I was completely enchanted. This record captures all their ethereal majesty in its most iconic and accessible form.
Perfect, jangly dream pop. This is the stuff.
Nobody sounds quite like Cocteau Twins. It might just be one of my favorite overall sounds of all time. They’re absolutely brilliant.
The Twins write a full on pop album and wind up with the best record of their career
Liz Fraser's voice might be the closest thing to the sirens our old buddy Homer was describing a few years back. Whimsical, hypnotic, mesmerizing. Except this is definitely contemporary. The siren is occupying a box, but she has not lost her freedom. Her voice does not expand in space but she fully inhabits the small corners and fills everything that is to fill. Her bandmates have crafted the perfect case. It has space, texture and mystery. It holds nuance, as not all is soft in this world they have created, but even the abrasive can be lush here. It sounds like it comes from another world, but it's very much this one.
In no way my favourite Cocteau Twins album, yet still far superior to a lot of the stuff that’s been presented on this site so far. And if people can’t understand that Liz Fraser uses her voice as an instrument, then I feel sorry for them. Marvellous, literally.
The perfect Album. I have listened to this so many times and haven’t gotten any sense of fatigue. We have to be grateful for albums like this. It’s not often we get them
Just incredible. Breathy ethereal, still somehow rocks.
Beautiful sounds
Strong wistful vibe. Filled me with something like that feeling of nostalgia for something that you've never experienced, but instead of nostalgia it's regret. Not for anything in particular, just feels like "the past" Loved it
I love this album. It's one of the closest you can get to hearing angelic hymns Listened to it many times prior and will listen to it many times again
One of my favourite albums from the Cocteau Twins, up with Treasure and Head over Heels. 10/10 love the album, love the band.
One of my favourites. Still can't understand the lyrics but it doesn't matter it's about the vibe.
I can't sing along to it for shit but I still love this album
Absolutely gorgeous. I was kind of in awe of it on my first listen. The instrumentation and sonic textures are immersive without a note out of place; not to mention the melodies. I don't even mind that I can't really understand what Elizabeth Fraser is singing--the feeling she imparts is more important. Maybe a perfect record. The Cocteau Twins hype is real. Highlights: Cherry-coloured Funk, Pitch the Baby, Iceblink Luck, Fifty-fifty Clown, Heaven or Las Vegas, Wolf in the Breast, Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires
Great run of albums the last few days, hoping it lasts. The Cocteau Twins' creative peak.
Cocteau Twins are a really singular band; they had a sound that is instantly recognizable, beautiful, atmospheric and unique. They are the stereotypical 4AD band; weird, outsiders, strange but beautiful, sparse and ethereal. They really set the tone for 4AD in the 80s. Robin Guthrie is like the Edge, except even more so. His guitar playing technique is rudimentary, but his ability to create soundscapes with innovative use of effects is amazing. He takes it even further than the Edge into a whole new space, that was massively influential on shoegaze and the way that guitars have often been recorded ever since. But the Cocteau Twins are nothing without Liz Fraser. Her vocals are startlingly original; tangential melodies, intricately woven harmony parts, barely even in English. God knows what she is saying, but it is like a canvas onto which the listener can project their own emotions. Extraordinary. Prince and Jeff Buckley were both massive fans. I find it a bit hard to pick between Cocteau Twins records (and I own a bunch, but not his one; it was very hard to get on vinyl). They are such a distinctive oeuvre unto themselves, that they are just their own thing. But they were certainly never better than this record. Maybe the best Cocteau Twins album is the one you are listening to right now.
An all-time favorite album, by one of my all-time favorite bands! I was fortunate enough to see them on the tour for this album and it was amazing!
Currently on my 3rd time through this album today.
I think I'm a long lost Cocteau Twin. Triplet. This is basically how my soul sounds; pretty, slow, harmonious, gazey. Takes real effort to stop this loop and put other music on. Forget Vegas, this is heaven!
Elizabeth Fraser, the woman you are…this album is like slowly waking from a hazy dream to a beautiful sunrise.
Heaven or Las Vegas stands as a pinnacle in the realm of dream pop, marking Cocteau Twins' most commercially successful release. 4AD president Ivo Watts-Russell's proclamed it being one of the label's best-ever releases, and a testament to the band's musical prowess and innovation in the genre. Elizabeth Fraser's ethereal vocals, complemented by Robin Guthrie's intricate guitar work and Simon Raymonde's atmospheric bass lines, create a mesmerising sonic landscape that captivates from start to finish. Tracks like Cherry-Coloured Funk and the title track Heaven or Las Vegas exemplify the band's ability to blend otherworldly soundscapes with catchy melodies. Even amidst the turbulence surrounding its release, the album stands as a testament to the band's artistic vision and enduring legacy in the realm of alternative music. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 6 STAND OUT TRACK - Heaven or Las Vegas
Classic album with an amazing soundscape.
Wasn't so sure on this. Then got into it as it went on. Then immediately re-listened as loved the last tune. Then loved every tune. Then went on to explore this band's other albums. Rare gem of a find.
Apparently the first dream pop album recorded. It honestly sounds like it could have been produced in 2024. Love it!
Fantastic.
Quintessential dream pop.
what? insane
obsessed w all the songs <3 lol cherry-coloured funk, pitch the baby, fifty-fifty clown have been in my rotation o:♡
I love all the songs on this album but I think Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires is my favorite <3 I wasn't expecting to see so many 1 star reviews on this but I guess you have to be smart and hot to understand :/
Fuck Yes.
Très planant, le genre de musique relax pas plate du tout, pas comme Pink Moon par Nick Drake EDIT DU FUTUR: C'EST BEAUCOUP PLUS RICHE ET DÉVELOPPÉ QU'IL N'Y PARAÎT À LA PREMIÈRE ÉCOUTE, PAS COMME PINK MOON PAR NICK DRAKE
Sooo so good. One of my top 10s.
sick af
Love it as always!
Not earth. That voice. Love this album. Language on the edge of a nervous breakdown becomes fully an instrument in its own right without having to have meaning encapsulated in words. Music can have intent and meaning outside of language.
Nice
The Scottish accent is something else, I couldn't understand any of the lyrics. This album has a very distinct sound which is great, but listening to all the songs back to back was a bit much for me, like eating a lot of pickles at once. I really like the album cover, fits the vibes. Edit -- One of the most unique albums I've listened to, there are a couple songs that I didn't like but overall really good, changing rating to a 5.
so. fucking. good.
9.5/10 - Loved this album. The chill vibe was fantastic. This felt similar to Emperor Tomato Ketchup where I can see how this turned into the music I listen to in my free time. Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer is just absolutely amazing. I loved it from the first song all the way through.
I enjoyed it, was expecting it to be pretty good with how much hype it was getting from everyone 9/10
Shoegaze bible 10/10
dreampop at its finest. this album is so /cinematic/. the layers r so gooooood and there's so much emotion put into this. love love love
Rating: 10/10
Exceptional vocals that haunt and inspire alongside a consistently developed bass that resonates the message of nostalgia and longing.
n 1990, amidst the burgeoning alternative scene, Cocteau Twins unveiled Heaven or Las Vegas, their magnum opus and arguably the definitive dream pop album. It was a culmination of their sonic explorations, a celestial tapestry woven with ethereal vocals, shimmering guitars, and innovative production. Exploring themes of love, escapism, and spiritual yearning, the album transcended genre limitations, leaving an indelible mark on music history. This review delves into the intricate layers of "Heaven or Las Vegas," examining its lyrical poetics, musical grandeur, production mastery, thematic depths, and lasting influence, while acknowledging its potential shortcomings. Lyrics: Elusive Poetry or Frustrating Ambiguity? Elizabeth Fraser's vocals are the album's focal point. While not adhering to conventional language, her soaring melodies and melismatic phrases create an evocative soundscape. Phrases like "cherry-coloured funk" and "frou frou foxes" paint vivid sonic pictures, leaving open interpretations to individual listeners. Some find this approach mystical and beautiful, while others perceive it as frustratingly abstract. "Bluebeard" hints at a narrative, drawing inspiration from the fairy tale, but remains intentionally elusive. Despite their ambiguity, the vocals conjure powerful emotions, whether it's the blissful longing in "Heaven or Las Vegas" or the simmering tension in "Iceblink Luck." Music: Where Guitars Dream and Basslines Pulse Robin Guthrie's guitar work is integral to the album's atmosphere. He creates shimmering textures, utilizing effects pedals and unconventional tunings to evoke a sense of ethereal beauty. Tracks like "Cherry-Coloured Funk" and "Heaven or Las Vegas" showcase his ability to build sonic crescendos with cascading melodies and shimmering arpeggios. Simon Raymonde's basslines provide a powerful undercurrent, often pulsating with a hypnotic rhythm that adds depth and weight to the soundscapes. The intricate interplay between these instruments creates a unique soundscape that feels both dreamlike and grounded. Production: A Canvas Painted with Sonic Innovation Producer Tim Friese and engineer Hugh Padgham play a crucial role in shaping the album's sonic textures. They utilize unorthodox recording techniques, manipulating vocals and instruments to create an otherworldly feel. Reverbs, delays, and distortion are employed judiciously, adding ethereal dimensions to the sound. The use of unconventional instrumentation, like the harp in "Pitch the Baby," further contributes to the album's sonic tapestry. This meticulous production elevates "Heaven or Las Vegas" beyond a mere collection of songs, transforming it into a cohesive auditory experience. Themes: A Spiritual Journey Through Love and Escapism While Fraser's lyrics remain evocative rather than literal, themes of love, escapism, and spiritual yearning permeate the album. "Heaven or Las Vegas" itself presents a dichotomy between an introspective, heavenly realm and the vibrant, exhilarating energy of Las Vegas. Tracks like "Iceblink Luck" and "Pinkflood" hint at darker emotions, but the overall mood remains hopeful and uplifting. The ethereal soundscapes evoke a sense of longing and escape, urging listeners to transcend the mundane and embrace the beauty of the unseen. Influence: A Dream Pop Legacy "Heaven or Las Vegas" had a profound influence on the development of dream pop. Bands like Lush, My Bloody Valentine, and Sigur Rós cite it as a major inspiration. Its impact extends beyond dream pop, influencing acts like Radiohead and Björk with its innovative production and exploration of ethereal soundscapes. The album's enduring impact lies in its ability to evoke a sense of emotional resonance and sonic exploration, inspiring numerous artists to push the boundaries of their sound. Pros: Groundbreaking production: Innovative techniques create a uniquely immersive soundscape. Hauntingly beautiful melodies: Fraser's vocals and Guthrie's guitar work leave a lasting impression. Cohesive atmosphere: The album flows seamlessly, creating a unified sonic experience. Influence and legacy: A pioneering work that inspired countless artists across genres. Cons: Lyrically ambiguous: May frustrate listeners seeking conventional storytelling. Accessibility: The ethereal nature might not appeal to everyone. Limited emotional range: While beautiful, it may not encompass the full spectrum of human emotions. Conclusion: "Heaven or Las Vegas" stands as a testament to Cocteau Twins' creative vision and mastery. Despite its potential drawbacks, the album's innovative production, ethereal soundscapes, and evocative vocals create an unforgettable sonic experience. While it may not resonate with everyone, its influence and legacy cement its place as a landmark achievement in dream pop and alternative music.
37 minutes of otherworldly bliss.
This shit was so beautiful - I have no notes. Immaculate
Cocteau Twins' most popular album, and probably not coincidentally the one that overlaps with Shoegaze's imperial era as well. Both Dream Pop and Shoegaze started out deconstructing pop music by transforming them into something unrecognizable. In early Cocteau Twins, the atmosphere was inscrutable and Elizabeth Frazer's singing even more cryptic and siren-esque. By the early 90s, both genres had come up with an unique sound out of their experimentations and were now moving back to pop: what would be the most approachable, poppiest music they could make without losing that characteristic sound? Here Cocteau Twins presents ten simple pop songs laced with their own sound thats probably one of the best ways of introducing someone to Dream Pop (without immediately throwing them into the deep end like you would with Loveless). The textures the guitars produces sound unlike anything you have ever heard a guitar make, almost closer to a jangly chippy synth. And Elizabeth Frazer, though now more discernably understandable, still sounds angelic. It gives the effect of her singing being both a sweet and lovingly way but also a fundamentally not 100-comprehensibly way, still allowing for an air of mystery to pervade. You can't get closer to heavenly vibes than this. Strong 4 to Light 5
This album is peak dream pop. Literal perfection from beginning to end and the album that began a long obsession with dream pop and shoegaze for me. If you can’t enjoy this album there’s something wrong with you.
Glorious
Absolute classic
This album is also on npr’s list of 150 best albums by women so I’ve listened before. It’s so great. This would be a good chill cooking dinner album
Standout- "Cherry-coloured Funk," "Heaven or Las Vegas," "Fotzepolitic," Vocals/Lyrics- 4/5 (no idea what they said but they said it beautifully Instrumentals- 5/5 (Very dreamy Vibes- 4/5 Overall- 5/5 I loved this album. While difficult to understand, it was very "dreamlike" and just scratched a specific itch in my brain.
An all time fave, listening to the album all the way through made me appreciate I Wear Your Ring a lot more. 5 stars all around.
An absolutely stunning, ethereal and beautiful album from start to finish. I don't think enough praise can be given. Openly, I don't care for a lot of late 80s-early 90s pop albums, but this is a shining example of a standout dream pop record in an over saturated environment. There are no bad, or even subpar tracks present. The runtime is a breezy 37 minutes, and every one is essential and very welcoming.
When David Lynch wrote, "We are like the dreamer who dreams, and then lives inside the dream,” I think he might have been listening to this (perfect dream pop) record.
The lyrics are unintelligible, the melodies are slow and dreamy, it's the very definition of the shoegaze genre, and I bloody love it
4.8 Dreampop at its finest, Elizabeth Fraser's the queen of shoegaze and dreampop. Fave songs: Iceblink Luck, Frou-frou Foxes, Cherry Coloured funk, pitch the baby
Fantastic album. I'd heard a few songs off of it before and really enjoyed it, but this is the first time I'd heard the whole album. It transports me to a dreamy place, and the album colors make my eyes happy.
Ethereal and soft. Reminds me of a calmer My Bloody Valentine. I loved it.
oo I got this one on vinyl Despite that, I've only heard Side A; luckily, what's good in the first half continues in the second. The feeling I get from seeing the album cover is very similar to what I get listening to the songs: like an aurora in that it's transient, & leaves me wanting more. Generator has been on fire this month, more Scottish nonsense pls HL: "Cherry-Coloured Funk", "Iceblink Luck", title track, "I Wear Your Ring", "Fotzepolitic", "Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires" January 22, 2024
Vastly prefer this to Treasure. I love how shoegazey and dreamy it is. It’s just a vibe.
Excellent album of dream Pop that doesn't meander or waste time
I can't believe I haven't heard this before. What an amazing sound that no doubt lays the foundation for modern indie but was also very much a product of its time: 80s dream/ambient pop full of wavy, dreamy rhythms. Loved it!!
“Iceblink Luck”, “Wolf in the breast”...
This was my first 10 that’s been recommended to me. I absolutely LOVED this and had never heard of the Cocteau twins before. Definitely need to check out their other stuff now. Just really enjoyed their vibe.
Really otherworldly pop!
Pretty much perfect all the way through. I’d never heard this before. It has an unreal dreamlike quality I gotta relisten to Loveless now
sempre uma experiencia
Beautiful! Really enjoyed this.
One of those rare flawless albums. Incredibly beautiful. Haunting. Elizabeth Fraser's voice is otherworldly.

Haven't listened to this album in ages and have forgotten how much fun it is....the sound of a new decade of pop
That was awesome. Have never listened to them before but will be now. Rating: 4.8
Great ethereal sounding record. A perfect blend of dream pop and rock.
Like falling in love in a dream and waking up with a smile still on your face. Still have no fucking idea what they’re saying though.
A brilliant slice of alternative nonsense
