Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Classic album from one of the best to do it.
good songs as an album but not the most memorable
Like jazz, I don’t have the sophistication to know why a particular rap song or album is especially good. I just really liked this album. I’d come back to it. Keep your eye on the sparrow!
GZA ain't nothing to fuck with...
Гений нахуй 8/10
While the Wu-Tang is always strongest together, this solo effort makes the case that the GZA could’ve made it fine on his own. And he did, his lyrical prowess on full display here. “Dual of the Iron Mic,” “Cold World,” and “Shadowboxin’” are standout cuts.
Ain’t nuthin to fuck with
Voiceovers plus Samurai themes, the only thing missing is lasers
Clever and enjoyable.
When it comes to Liquid Swords, there is one thing that i really can't get over and that is just how good the production is on this album. The beats and samples mix with the rapping really well and just are really good when it comes to complimenting each other. The samples are also from a martial arts movie which feels so on brand for a member of the Wu-Tan Clan. At worst, the songs could be a little bit boring but that was very rare when it came to this album. This is definitely a great album I can recommend to any 90s hip hop enjoyer. Best Song: 4th Chamber Worst Song: Hell's Wind Staff / Killah Hills 10304
really good beats here, the usage of classic action film/TV samples and absolutely KILLER drum loops create a nice consistent energy throughout. so many subgenres i'm learning about, all these different areas of the US each having their own style of hip hop...
Enjoyed this. 4 stars
Better than Mobb Deep for the most part but not the 36 chambers. Vibe actually carries the lyrics more than it seemed. But we live for the vibe
This is cute. It's got a nice chill groove and he's always had a great voice. Not sure how I never listened to this one before!
Top 3 Wu Tang Albums: 1. 36 Chambers 2. Cuban Linx 3. LIQUID SWORDS
77/100
From the dark and grimy production courtesy of producer RZA to the equally gruesome yet complex rhymes displayed by GZA and the rest of the Wu-Tang members featured on here (most notably an amazing guest verse by Method Man on "Shadowboxin'"), this record is another must-listen in the boarder Wu-Tang catalog. 9/10
This is top notch.
Out of all the Wu-Tang albums, this is the one that sounds the cleanest, has the cleverest production and sample use (thanks to RZA), and is the most consistent with mood and subject matter. But of course, it also stars GZA, the most intellectual and introspective of the collective. The flow and rhymes are insane, so smooth and imaginative, employing extensive similes and metaphors. Subject matter is centered around the injustice of the political system and the capitalist greed of record labels, and how the Wu-Tang are samurai fighting against the system. The mood is dark and ambient with each track having a different feel, and only strays from that in the last track. Very strong start. Appropriate intro sample, and "Liquid Swords" is a powerful opener with high energy and emotion that hypes the rest of the record. The 4 tracks that follow are memorable and distinctive, with impressing beats and samples, and some catchy choruses. In contrast, "Labels" is a bit forgettable and anticlimactic. Our two big tracks "4th Chamber" and "Shadowboxin" are fun and catchy while still retaining the dark vibe. From there, the momentum is kinda killed. You get a long lame skit. "Killah Hills 10304" has a sick sample and some cool effects but it's largely forgettable, and doesn't help with how muddled he sounds. "Investigative Reports" is a solid collab but feels a bit disjoint, and the production is boring. "Swordsman" and "I Gotcha Back" have cool dark horror production and elaborate storytelling but are a bit forgettable. Finally, Killah Priest's "B.I.B.L.E" closes the album which sounds really out-of-place but is an optimistic contrast to the dark mood of the rest of the record. It's 55-minute length does not help. Candidate for the best Wu-Tang album with plenty of outstanding cuts and hits. Swap "Investigative Reports" with "Labels" and improve its production, and cut everything after "Shadowboxing", maybe with a more satisfying closer, and this would not only be the best Wu-Tang album, but one of the best hip-hop albums at all. If anything, this record shows the potential for smooth and imaginative lyricism.
Very lyrical and good flow. All songs were good/great I don’t get the whole ninja samurai excerpts from almost all the songs
I love how Wu Tang split up but then they all just did solo albums with each other. This is a great record, a little repetitive maybe but strong rapping throughout. Loved 4th Chamber and Shadowboxin’ especially. High 4.
GZA solo still has the wu tang feel, lots of great stuff in here
Really liked this. The lyrics are dense and the rhymes and flow really stand outs. This combined with the many great samples makes it the whole package. "4th Chamber" and "Shadow Boxin" are probably my favourite tracks and also appear back to back. Generally, I think the tracks with multiple rappers are better. Just a classic rap album. While some other rap albums can feel immature from this era I feel this holds up.
The first and last tracks may be the standouts to me but the whole album has great production, menacing while not being overproduced. Atmospheric stuff. Strong rapping throughout. No throwaway interludes or skits. Consistently good and one I'd like to come back to.
I'm not a huge Hip-hop fan but this album is pretty damn good. The rapping is in good but it's about the music, very well produced with great use of samples to create this hypnotic atmospheric sound. Also I normally find sound bites misplaced and distracting but they actually work on this album.
I love that GZA commits to the king fu movie bit. I really like this record, way more than most of the others on this list…
Liquid Swords is SUCH and influential album. You can see the cinematic qualities on pseudo-underground rap like Denzel Curry and MF Doom. There aren't many standout songs, in my opinion, but it is a vibe to listen to. Best Songs: Cold World, Shadowboxin', B.I.B.L.E. Worst Songs: Swordsman
Duel Of The Iron Mic and Investigative Reports are brilliant songs. 4/5
Album has such a mood to it. Lo-fi and atmospheric with a lyrical journey.
Great hip hop, would definitely listen again Favourite song:Liquid Swords
4.5 I repeat, RZA is the king. Definitely my favorite Wu solo album prior to starting this project. The beat on Liquid Swords is one of my favorite of all time. GZA is so, so smooth throughout. I could listen to this on repeat all day.
I've started to enjoy some Rap recently. Totally different world and almost 30 years away. This deserves it's place in the 1001
what a journey - loved all the twists and turns. fantastic hip hop album, but i'd expect nothing less from the 'spiritual head' of wu-tang clan
I am a fan of Wu Tang and this album is one that I am familiar with although I have never listened to it the whole way through. It's really good, I'm sure that I will listen to this one again.
7/10
Apparently the are connected with Mr. Wu Tag
Practically a Wu Tang album. & Wu Tang is forever.
Fuck yeah WU. Probably the best "solo" Wu album of all time. RZA continues his insane production style and love the martial arts samples. Like most Wu albums, this one flows so damn well with incredible beats and great appearances from all members coming in and out. The front half I gotta say I loved more than the back. Still was great just nothing incredible. Just gets me amped for whenever we get 36 Chambers - and we better be getting it. High 4
GZA may be devoted to the sub-genre he helped to create, to the music, to the fans... and to many of us, he's "faith."
Seen Wu-tang twice and I’ve never listen to this album but it honestly slapppppps, bangers on here for sure that I’ve heard live 🤩
I mean.
Like most 90s albums, this is too long. It's not bad, just too long. And quite monotonous, but that's obviously intentional. Favorite song: liquid swords
So smooth and effortless can't believe it took me this long to listen to this in full B.I.B.L.E. especially is crazy good
I love that Wu Tang sound. Something about the lilt of the samples and crisp lyrics
Rap is not a style that I listen to often, but I do enjoy story tellers in all genres and GZA (along with the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan) delivers in this area. I absolutely love the aesthetic of Wu-Tang Clan, mixing the East Coast hip-hop/rap of early/mid 90s with the backdrops of Martial Art movies and Motown grooves and samples. I have always appreciated that aspect of it without really listening to it before recently. The album was mixed in RZA's basement studio and that gives a guerilla warfare feel to it. The beats are simple but tight with samples layered into the background. All laid down to paint a picture, no real wasted brushstrokes here, everything seems to serve the narrative of each song. Having just recently done a dive into Enter the Wu Tang(36 Chambers), I appreciate the rest of the crew jumping in with GZA on these tracks. They accentuate but don't overshadow the solo work here. I can see this album working it's way into a regular rotation for me when the Rap mood hits me.
Interesting rhymes and beats. Love the samples from the samurai movie.
If I'm being honest, I'm so busy with work that I couldn't pay super close attention to the lyrics of this album which is unfortunate because this album is known for its solid lyricism. The album flows very well. The low-fi production makes everything feel so smooth. The instrumentals/samples are atmospheric and keep things interesting.
Love this one. It feels so New York. The rhymes are awesome, the beats are chill and flowy. It does have that old school vibe, but it doesn't feel out of date. GZA is so sharp and calculated with his delivery. The record also feels kind of proto-MF DOOM. I wouldn't say its a concept album, but it has a lot of connection between songs and an overall lore to it. They lyrics are probably the strongest part, GZA is deep and spiritual with his delivery. I dig it. Wu-Tang Forever!
I enjoyed this one, to mye own surprise. The production is dark and dense, and the songs have a continous flow that reminds me somewhat of more consept oriented records. I like that the lyrics are a lot smarter than the average 90s hiphop full of bitches and hoes( I am looking at you Grandpa Snoop). Guest lines from fellow Wu Tang-members ensures a nice variety in voices and styles that keeps the record from becoming monotonous. I'll stick this one to my "will listen again"-list.
cool! never listened to wu tang let alone individual members...
Hip-hop is not my jam, but this work is solid. I found the rhythms inviting and engaging. I enjoyed listening to it.
Best of the solo records better than everything except 36 Chanmbers
Great beats and lyrically sound. Solid 4/5
I hate modern rap with a passion, but I LOVE old-school rap. Makes me feel like a badass. It's not my favorite of this genre but overall it's easy to listen to. 4/5
gotta love good ol hip hop. lyrically good and musically catchy
listened 3x. it grew on me for sure. 3.8/5 catchy
I enjoyed listening to this album, and the artists and songs are all new to me. Very into the hypnotically rhythmic grooves with vocal deliveries that work great on top of it. I will have to come back to this one.
Really good, can’t agree with the people saying it’s the best hiphop album of all time but i’ve only listened too it once, so maybe if i listen again.
Favourite tracks: dual of the iron mic; cold world; 4th chamber; shadowboxin; killah hills; I gotcha back
Smooth old skool hip hop and samurai film samples - what more could you want
Some really strong songs and great lyrics on here, love the usage of movie clips and the features from other WuTang members, but overall the vibe isn't 100% what I would want from an album. It's really strong, definitely a 4 star, and I'll definitely come back to some of these songs, especially the title track and Killah Hills + Shadowboxin! But I probably won't be listening obsessively to it as a whole project
Нормально. Хороший рэпчина, от него не отдает плесенью, качово и спустя 30 лет
Smooth flow from some of the GOATs. Every Wu-Tang member is present on this jam. Literally had a discussion tonight with my 18 y/o son. He said I only like rock. In spite of my arguments against that position, he didn’t buy it. Think I’m going to send him this.
Yass
Solid hip-hop album.
Cool album! I can't say that I'd ever turn on this type of music for fun, but I dig it just the same.
I was enjoying this as much as Tical. I felt GZA's flow was great, and he was definitely turning some pretty brilliant rhymes. But then GZA started rapping about God, and I kinda got turned off a bit. Still, most of the earlier stuff on the album was pretty good. And the other guys from Wu-Tang made it enjoyable as well. But if I want to hear about God I'll listen to Stryper. Which I most certainly will _NOT_. So I liked Tical a little bit better, but I will still give this a 4 on the strength of the earlier songs.
06/02/2024
Enjoyable rapping by a legend.
Probably the best solo Wu Tang album
great production, world building, storytelling
It's obvious it was going to be a hip hop album just because of the cover. Must be fun, I'm listening to hip hop rn so I'm gonna change it with this. First song, ooo filmy start(smn talked about this so I'm not gonna do it). Apparently this is east coast hip hop. Quite spooky. Little screams. And smoothly comes in the rap, both of them are doing it. I like the beat, the rap is also satisfying. The rhymes were good I must say. I'd rate this 3/5, I needed something more. Second song, again moviey start, I wonder what was the meaning of them putting this here. The fucking rhymes are eating. Also so many people here. Another one came in, the background is piano looping, and sometimes explosions. The chorus is weird at the end. And the outro is men speaking in a radio with choir sound, scratchy voice too. This was again 3/5, I generally like hip-hop and would rap with him because of the lyrical flow, dunno about the meaning though. Third song, I like the rap start, it's full and fun to listen to. It stopped, it's now the usual like rap. I have no idea how to rate hip-hop, like what do I say about them, so I just say what I think. I like how sometimes there is two voices rapping and then it comes back to the original verse type. There is trombone like sound when chorus starts. I like how he says the song title. It's just beat at the end with him rapping a little. Trombones at last. This was also 3/5 , it's just not doing its best I think, I've heard better raps and construction of such songs. First time rating songs individually and I'm not good at this, this was again 3/5 idkk. 4th song, I like the bassed beat. And again the double rapping is so nice to hear, but it stops quickly. Some rhymes are really good to me. There is this constant sound in my right ear, which is usual in the hip-hop. Long ass outro. This gave 3/5 rating because it sounded as almost same. 5th song, moviey start. It's a smooth rap, but no chorus makes the songs really boring. It's too same, though this is one of the hip-hop albums that have THAT vibe, basically objectively it's enjoyable, but I wouldn't want to hear these songs again, oh some call them forgettable songs. Now it's not rap, but some man singing. Outro is again long, Depeche mode vibes because of that. The violin is great. Rap slightly came back. This one was also 3/5, it will be 4 when I will want to listen to it again, and 2 when it's just uninteresting. 6th song, I like the way he says the n word, also his voice is really good, now that i think there are some insufferable rappers with bad voices, that would give these songs 4/5, but I'm picky. Wow this one was short and not as obscure, so I'd say 2/5. 7th song, I like how it transitioned from the moviey vibe to the beat. Also this is the best kind of rap I think, it's just simple yet lyrically full(maybe not). Again so many artists here. Glitchy sound at the end. It was unexpectedly basic, because of the intro it's 3/5. 8th song, I love how chill the vibes are, even though he's like not rapping softly, it's not aggressive or unchill either. There is "oh man" in between, and deep voiced man in my left ear. Deep voice is in right ear too. Ehh this didn't stand out 2/5. 9th song, not a movie start, I think he's just talking and there is some man's vocals as a background. Bigg intro. I used to deepen my knowledge and learn about songs' meaning, but it took so much time and it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. It's upbeat, idk what instrument it is though. Definitely not bad, just there is many songs like these, might not be lyrically as good, but still. This wass 2/5, but now that I think 5 is too low to rate them, but I'm rating subjectively anyway so. 10th song, news woman in my left ear, and rapping in my right ear. Quickly starts the song. This was downtempo low-key, liked that. The violin is also good. I just love us style and voice. Long outro with that radio speaking man. This was 2/5 too, it was too simple, maybe 1 star for that additionally, but no. 11th song, it's vibey as always. I'm getting bored tho, because of how same it sounds, it all comes down to lyrical side I guess, but I don't listen for them so. Long outro again. This one was again 2/5, maybe it's because I'm sick of the same exact vibe, but I'm still objective in a way. 12th song, there is murmuring in the song in both ears as a background voice when he's rapping. The movie scene waked me up, before it was quite chill and nice vibes, soo 3/5 it is. 13th song, and that movie scene waked me up. It's very normal after thatt. The style is better. Also this is 4/5 because of the name. Otherwise it's not very different from other songs. It was a nice one, I really liked it, I feel like this was a 3 star album, but it could be more if we think deeply. So I'd say 4 stars it is, the smoothness and the voice, plus the moviey vibe gives him such rating, much better than some rappers today.
Not music I would listen to on my own but I like it.
"Liquid Swords" by GZA, released in 1995, is a masterpiece in the realm of hip-hop. With razor-sharp lyricism and a dark, atmospheric production, GZA, also known as the Genius, crafts an album that is both intellectually stimulating and sonically captivating. The album's conceptual coherence, heavily influenced by martial arts and street narratives, adds a layer of depth to each track. The production, primarily handled by RZA, is haunting and complements GZA's intricate rhymes seamlessly. "Liquid Swords" stands as a pillar of Wu-Tang Clan's collective brilliance, showcasing GZA's prowess as an emcee. Whether delving into social commentary or delivering vivid storytelling, every track is a testament to GZA's lyrical dexterity. Earning a solid 4/5, "Liquid Swords" remains a timeless classic that continues to influence and inspire within the hip-hop landscape.
4.25
fave track: i gotcha back final thoughts: wu-tang i owe you my life
9/10 this was such a great debut from GZA! i've been a fan of wu-tang clan for a while but never bothered to explore their solo works. this was a very lyrically complex album, i loved how martial arts jargon was used to illustrate the life GZA grew up in, being surrounded by drugs, violence and crime - it really worked well in his favour. i also love the sampling from old martial arts movies, it gave the album a lot more atmosphere. i feel like this album dragged towards the end but the songs were still good nonetheless. amazing listen.
👍
Classic 90s hip hop/rap. I liked the amount of samples and skits, did not feel it was overpowering.
atmospheric, one of the best wu tang related projects
The sample choices and guests elevated it.
Didn’t catch much of the text but loved the album still. You could see it’s a very well planned album. Probably my favorite rap album so far. Will have to relisten one day.
I don't really listen to lyrics so can't comment on that. Musically I enjoyed it, good grooves and vibes.
Incredible. Cant wrap my head around the lyricism and flow. Very glad that i got 36 chambers before this for context. Only reason it doesnt get a five is that i saw a comment saying that rza tends to leave in way too much skit and filler in the songs themselves which makes just listening to the songs difficult but its a very minor critique. Also BIBLE is probably the best song on this but it isnt even GZA lol. Amazing nonetheless 4.5
Quality Hip Hop album. Fav track: 4th Chamber
Took me a minute but I really settled into this one. There's some brilliant introspection and genuine questioning in the lyrics along with the staunch stuff. Great beats too - its probably not my preferred hip-hop vibe but I can't fault a lot of it. Fave track: Swordsman
Pretty behind on albums so rushing through some reviews a bit. This was a great hip hop record. Solid lyrics, good beats, fun transitions. Fave track: Gold
In 4th Chamber: "Sippin rum out of Stanley Cups" Even in the 90s Stanley had a chokehold on us
Thought I would hate it but I didn’t.
What a great album, one I barely knew. Very atmospheric and evocative, lots of fascinating world-building. Good stuff!
Liked it, but I feel as if it’s missing something to truly get me to love it 7.5/10
Ran thru it twice and really liked it. Smooth delivery with well used samples and good beats. Sometimes the skits on hip hop albums are overdone or out of place but that wasn’t the case on Liquid Swords, adding to the album instead of taking away from it. Strong appearance by Method Man on Shadowboxing which was my favourite track on this one. Strong album 4 stars
"Duel of the Iron Mic" and "Cold World" are amazing.
Good example of the underground genre. Pleasant listen, can definitely come back to listen to it again. The rap flows very naturally, and the beats are simple but catchy and great to listen to.
I really really enjoyed the samples and beats here. Could honestly vibe to them alone, but the rapping had intent and purpose, and only enhanced the instrumentals.
Being familiar with Wu, ODB and Method Man's bigger hits, this felt like hanging out with old friends. Yet, I was too into DMB and Lilith Fair artists to be into this when it came out. My mistake for sure.
Not a 5, I don't follow the lyrics too well.
Very good.
Good album I reckon’d
Fire, a bit repetitive
Great rapping, top tier, but I wish there were more hooks like 36 Chambers.
ganz geil, schöner 90er Hip Hop
I met GZA once on the street with my sister. He asked us who our favorite member of Wu Tang was, and I said him. My sister said "Method Man", to which he replied "Fuck outta here" and I missed my opportunity to hang out with GZA. This album is great. One of the best Wu Tang solo albums.
Enjoyed about as much as the Wu Tang debut. Production is masterful, atmosphere is great. Loved Swordsman and I Gotcha Back, BIBLE wasn't much good though, felt tacked on the end and totally out of place.
wu tang clan aint nuthin to fuck with
That was some seriously impressive flows on this one. Apparently I've been sleeping on Wu Tang, always hear about them, but never listened for some reason. GZA's flow sounds way ahead of the pack, I like this way better than the in-you-face gangster tough guy rap that I associate with 90s rap
J'aime le rap du passé ???
I miss this 90s flow
cool
the best wu tang album.
Bueno pero muy largo
Was happy to see this album appear, as a casual fan of Wu Tang I’m not overly familiar with members solo albums beyond ODB and Method Man. GZA has an absolutely immaculate flow and the overall vibe and feeling of the album encapsulates early 90s rap in a timeless way
first listen to this in years and its so much more obtuse than I remember (compliment). wordplay is immense and the instrumentals are top notch. really the only thing that brings this down is minute long intros and outros. best tracks: investigative reports, gold, shadowboxin
A really great project. While I don't have a select few song on constant rotation, the highlights (and the majority of this album) really is *that* good, and absolutely earns it's heralded reputation
The Shogun!
Dirty dungeon beats, great lyrics. Favorite songs being living in the world today, liquid swords, 4th chamber. One of my favorite hip hop albums, but can be a little too “dirty” sounding for me to listen to over and over.
The flow, rap and beats are all very 90's hip hop but very good 90's hip hop. One of the more iconic rappers from the Era, the east coast style is on display in this album. Some high highs and a few songs that are okay. An overall solid album.
Awesome opening, loved the 4th chamber, I gotcha back, and bible. Bible didn't feel like it fit with the narrative of the album and at time it was difficult to understand the lyrics. Love the gritty nyc vibe
Classic
3.8 - Pretty good, was pleasantly surprised
This is shockingly laid back for being the product of transmuting a sick anime sword fight sequence into a stellar hip hop album. Feeling silky smooth... might cut you across the neck later.
This album isn't something I'd necessarily seek out, but it's great. Seems like I'm gonna be a fan of 90s hip-hop.
Probably pinnacle level for this genre of hip hop. I grew up on the same kind of badly dubbed kung fu films filling weekend hours on sleepy regional TV stations, wierd resonance for a former (very former) kid from the rural midwest - framing that hits better for me than the mafiosa thing.
Liquid Swords is a great album that I've always thought is more back-filled. The album is very well produced but with songs like 4th Chamber and Shadowboxin' towards the middle/end of the album it just kind of feels like the beginning is a lot of preamble.
Wu-Tang! Wu-Tang! Wu-Tang! Wu-Tang!
Very solid album, I really liked the rap and the over all samurai theme was cool
I enjoyed this. Never really listened to Wu Tang or any of its members stuff before but this was an easy sounding old school rap track. Everything sounded effortless and I much prefer this style on average to some of the newer stuff I've heard, like Kendrick.
HL: title track, “Gold”, “Cold World”, “4th Chamber”, “Investigative Reports”, “Swordsman” One of my earliest albums on this list, Wu-Tang’s debut, got a wan 3 stars from me. While I still feel a bit out of my element listening to them, I’ve come around to enjoying pretty much every track from that album, going so far as to see the Wu Tang live when they rolled into town. I remember thinking, man that GZA has a cool, calm presence (and also, maybe a bit tired), and also I’d like to hear more of his stuff. Enter Liquid Swords! Compared to the other spin-off I’ve heard, “…Cuban Linx”, it’s more serious & less braggadocious, and combined with RZA’s hypnotic soundscapes, it just works better for me. “Swordsman” isn’t my favourite song lyrically, but it might have my favourite sample on the whole album. November 16th, 2023
I am usually not big on Hip Hop albums, but I actually quite enjoyed this one.
I've never listened to any Wu Tang or side album straight before. The flow is unreal. Anytime I'm focused on the lyrics they are tight but I find I just want to zone out with it and listen. Great to see they are big nerds sampling lone wolf and cub.
Another really good 90s rap album. Good beats and lyrics so what else to ask for. Rating: 4.3
Philosophical and lyrical, with tongue-twisting rhymes and a heavy martial arts inspiration. A worthy addition to the Wu-Tang oeuvre.
Really enjoyed this one!
Hell yeah, dude
Great classic hip-hop beats
This album got better and better as it went on. Initially I was only going to give it a 3 but on further listen I am giving it a 4. Solid raps.
A solid little brother to 36 Chambers, but that absolutely killer group dynamic really feels missing here for me. Given how legendary this album is, I can't help but be a smidge disappointed.
I like this album and I've listened to it a few times before, but it's never reached the highest echelon of this era of rap for me. I think maybe I'm just not listening to the lyrics enough. The beats are great but sometimes blend into each other, and it wouldn't be a 90s hip hop record without a bunch of non-music in between every song. Still very solid. 8/10
Yeah this was pretty nice. Obviously a very talented rapper and had some cool beats and production. I know this is a really highly regarded album, but something about it didn't quite click with me all the way. I would like to revisit it again sometime and maybe it will click for me a bit more next time.
Awesome.
Interesting fantasy samurai album with some solid hip hop in it
Considered taking a point off just b/c of the singing in Cold World. This album goes hard af though.
Yeah, this was pretty good. Although I thought it was going to be quite different based on the intro.
the epitome of 90s rap. very cool
great
B.I.B.L.E. CLEARS!!!! Wu-tang lore, Samurai x MF Doom type. No bad songs, but only one standout. Other songs I liked in the moment: Cold world, I gotcha back
Great album. Would recommend for a intro to Wu style
Never been a big fan of the Doom like cartoon themed stuff, but the beats and the rapping is on point. Old school, samples, scratching, sick flow. Very pleased with this one. The songs 4th Chamber, Shadowboxin’, Investigative Reports and B.I.B.L.E. are dope as hell.
This was a great album. Never listened to it before.
Excellent 90's rap.
very different from what i usually listen to. i liked the vintage rap sound
I don't often listen to hip hop, and the brilliance of many of the genre's artists is often lost on me. But this album? I don't know if it's the way the songs are presented, if it's the samurai movie theme or what, but for some reason I actually really liked that one.
I liked it. I have never listened to any Wu-Tang related material before, except just randomly, from streaming. I may have to address that.
Decent.
Pretty dope
This was really really good, probably one of the best rap albums I’ve had generated so far.
Front to back, great album. Keeps a solid energy throughout, doesn't overstay its welcome. Dark, sinister beats mixed with tight lyrical ability and flow. Favorite tracks: "Gold", "Shadowboxin'", "Investigative Reports"
High quality, solid album as one would expect from GZA & RZA.
Hmm this may be the best of any Wu-Tang Clan members that I've heard so far. There's some nice lyrical flow and darkness that feels quite real and hypnotic here. Of course I don't like the random kung-fu movie samples but... maybe I even like this more than Wu-Tang Clan!?
Ha I just got the Wu-Tang album two days ago and now I get a solo work. I really enjoyed it. Good flow and good beats.
This album was solid. I enjoyed almost every song.
Never heard this album before yesterday and not my usual genre of music. But I listened to it a couple times and found it to be quite enjoyable.
One of the greatest albums of the 90s
What’s happening to me? I actually liked the sound of this hard hip hop. Maybe it’s the kung fu film clips or the fast rhythmic rapping, but this actually did not grate. I might even listen again!
Eassily the best solo album of wu tang
Overall Rating - 8/10 Favorite Song - 4th Chamber Grew on me, not super familiar with this rapper but will listening to more of his solo work as well as the rest of the Wu Tang Clan
a true snapshot record, a vision of the east coast scene of ‘95. hypnotic, and i could feel their skill and clever messaging being transmitted out to me but my only satellite was facing the wrong way to absorb it, saving the extremely powerful closer. a great space to get lost in and a great literary world of power i hope to revisit when the east side hosts cooler waters for me. a masterclass in sampling and storytelling, truly a finest record throughout
Banger
Possibly the best thing to come out of Wu-Tang. Beats are incredible, rapping is pretty good with some minor downfalls
This is a great album, but like most hip hop I listen to I get tired after 40 minutes. An easy listen, and GZA is very smooth with his delivery. Ghostface til I die, but this is still worth the listen. 7/10
Liquid Swords, Duel of the Iron Mic, Living in the World Today, Gold, 4th Chamber, B.I.B.L.E 4.5/5
wow incredible sounds at the beginning of songs... Heh hyvää biisin napsukkaa albumin lopussa.. jeesus viini ..oletteko säästäneet hyvän viinin tähän saakka heh kun väki on humaltunut heh.. yleensä heh toisteppäon heh
classic hip hop. you just can't really go wrong with this album. shadowboxin is insane. ghostfaces verse on 4th chamber is amazing
3.5
Banger. Loved it
Just awesome all the way through
The \"Taxi Driver\" of the rap world
I'm afraid I didn't catch any of the lyrics outside of the spoken samurai story, but I loved the beats and Afro-Samurai is such a cool aesthetic.
What a classic - great beats and lyrics. Ninjas for life!
Not always one for bears but I liked this album.
-EXCITED about the genre change happening for me rn -NOTHING compares to this shit, the stuff that came out in the 90’s -like seriously this is so cool -loving the beat and flow on these tracks!! -favorites: living in the world today, i gotcha back -seriously, this album is so good. like hello????? ghostface killah?????
Unexpectedly cool and very smooth. 3.5/5
Pretty good, nice storytelling.
Samurai
Pretty fricking cool. Old skool.
Was not expecting a GZA album on here but that's one way to start out a week, in the best way. I think Stevie told me about these Wu Tang fellas who did their own albums and Liquid Swords sounds super familiar so listening to this was really great. Especially from something from the mid 90's and when comparing to the Limpy Biscuits. Some fantastic hip hop on here and while I'm not as familiar with GZA as my brother probably is, I'm glad we got this one.
A bunch of bangers and a surprisingly moving ending. There are great beats and rhymes on here, so I don't think that I can ask for much more. A great record.
Toen ik dit ooit voor het eerst luisterde begreep ik er niet zo veel van maar dit album ben ik steeds meer gaan waarderen. Toch wel een van de parels van de hele wutang groep
I’m a big rap fan, it’s the first genre of music I started listening to and then I went out from there but I still haven’t gotten around to listening to a lot of the more classic 90’s hip hop albums so I was excited to see GZA, one of the founding members of Wu Tang, come up as I knew this was going to be an album full of quality rhymes and exceptional lyrics. So I’ll start with what I like about this album, the majority of the album is filled with cool lyrical focused songs that GZA really floats on, some particular stand outs to me are ‘Duel Of The Iron Mic’ which has some killer performances from the features especially the verse from ‘Inspectah Deck’ where the beat fades away temporarily as he takes the stage. Another favourite being 4th Chamber which is similar to the above track as everyone is just so consistent, the best is grimy and it just all fits together so well. Lastly, I have to mention the last track ‘B.I.B.L.E.’ which has my favourite performance from Killah Priest and probably my favourite beat too, somehow equally relaxed yet grimy, it’s a fantastic way to finish the album. There were a few duds to be honest and it’s unfortunate to see that they were mainly the tracks where it was just GZA, in particular ‘Gold’ and ‘Labels’ where his performance is very understated, there’s just not a lot of fire to these tracks and really the album is fairly long as it is I think it can be done without these. So to me the album does get a little stale at times but there are a nice bunch of high moments that I can appreciate too. To conclude, not one of my favourite rap albums that I’ve heard but I did enjoy it and looking forward to more rap albums in this list. 4/5
Klassista Wu-Tang-laatua, toimii! 4/5
Hell yea
Goed hiphop album
This is different level hip hop I appreciate the style & moods this one put out
Having just listened to 36 Chambers a few weeks ago, this album seemed like the sequel. Not as good, but with many of the same martial arts and hip hop references, with a very similar style throughout. I enjoyed it because I love the Wu Tang Clan. Selwyn Seyfu Hinds from The Source called GZA "a highly focused master-graftsman" and felt that "throughout Liquid Swords he maintains a clear, precise flow, one that reflects deadly-sharp purpose and skilled execution." Hinds also praised RZA's production on the album, noting his "increasingly sophisticated style: shuffling kicks, neck snapping snares, haunting melodies via strings or vibe-like textures and penetrating bass tones." Great album. Just shy of 36 Chambers, for me.
8/10 Really good
This is an example of a very insular art form, so without some context it can be difficult to inhabit. Like much contemporary art, it is not only self-referential but is responding to the work of other artists’ earlier works. The menacing background music supports a boasting, threatening voice about domination and power in a world of threat and oppression. Pride and power seem to be foregrounded in a universe of darkness and paranoia. And there’s Kung-fu. It’s good.
Very 90s rap Fave Song- I Gotcha Back
top tier recordings weaved in- songs seamlessly run into each other - feel the care put into each word
Hearing this album makes me wish that I got 36 chambers after this because I feel like I didn’t fully appreciate the wu tang clan and their members. This was a really good trip hop album that had an excellent atmosphere and vibe throughout; kinda made me wonder if dummy influenced this at all. I especially liked 4th chamber
4.25
4th Chamber hits
Ahhh shit! Can't go wrong with some WU!! It might be a gza solo album but the whole crew makes appearances. When in a Wu mood Liquid Swords gets heavy play in the rotation.
Really surprised how easy this is to enjoy. Gritty, with a great flow and lyrical creativity. I like the delivery and atmospheric feel that is layered onto the tracks... definitively fits here and helps this album stand out.
Wu are great I'm finding
Hörs extra mycket i andra versen i 'Living In The World Today', eller Method Mans andra vers i 'Shadowboxin''. Bästa låt(ar): 'Living In The World Today' eller '4th Chamber'.
Un tres bon album avec une realisation a1 et des flows a coupe le souffle. 4.5
Boom bap
Vicious precise lyrics, sinister alluring beats, and very relatable (they wish they were east asian, just like me)
De finns annan hiphop än wutang robert ..
I really liked this album. I hadn't heard much Wutang music before, but I knew that their songs were lyrically great, and this was no exception. I found myself old-school bopping to this whole thing
Yeah okay. I lind of like this. Probably as brutal lyrically as 2Pac but it sounds less aggressive.
Strongly themed, tightly rhymed great record by GZA - from the memorable sample from the opening track to the very end of the album this is a strong strong showing from the ex-Wu Tang Clanner. Moody, dark - but without going overboard it's just right.
still trying to figure out how a liquid sword would work
A solid portion of Wu Tang Entertainment Product. I much prefer extended samurai film samples to skits. Fave track - "Liquid Swords" and "4th Chamber" - the ones with the most samurai dialogue 👺
Wow, what a great listen. Great flow with vocals, awesome production. What an album! 4! TBz 1. Living In The World Today 2. Shadowboxin’ 3. Hell’s Wind Staff / Killah Hills 10304 4. Investigative Reports 5. 4th Chamber
Well what a week we've had, from the wholesomeness of parsnips, lemon & thyme to the precision of GZA's metaphors. Although I'll confess, I had to look at the lyrics to truly appreciate the flow. Hoppity-hipping
Always been more of a RZA guy but I can get down with this cousin. Cold world is such a nasty song. It's basically a Wu album with all the guest spots but I'm not complaining love Wu. Intelligent hip hop> Over this dumbed down shit today. I think by looking at the year this came out not too far after 36 chambers. If so damn. The growth is crazy good for gza. Shadowboxing got method man, fuck yeah always loved his flow and delivery he sounds like glass, smooth when together but sharp and dangerous when broken. Solid 8/10 album. Or 4/5 stars. Haven't listen to Wu members in a long time, besides the "Enter the Fellowship" which is Lord of the rings soundtrack over Wu vocals.
At first, listening to this album for the first time in 5-10 years was a bit underwhelming. However, the more I listened, the better it got just as I remembered. I used to love this album in highschool when I first discovered hip-hop. The production, GZA's lyrical ability, the features from other Wu-Tang members and affiliates made this such a great album. RZA's production on this album is one of his best. My favorite tracks was #13, which surprisingly wasn't produced by RZA.
Lyrical masterclass.
Nice old school hiphop
Wicked.
A fantastic album. GZA flow and lyrics are incredible. The beats are minimalistic, but at the same time perfect for GZAs style. Never been a fan of skits in albums, especially if they don’t really add to the album. Enjoyable, but perhaps got a little too repetitive. 4/5
Could've showed some restraint with the skits, but solid.
This album is The Tits. Usually, if I were to hear martial arts film quotes interspersed through an album, I'd assume that the artist was targeting specifically to the sort of awkward, friendless no-hoper who wears cat ears and buys "Katanas" online. His low-grade steel will be pride of his collection, alongside his waifu bodypillow. Of course, the whole sorry lot would be under a cloud of stench that's managed to develop its own personality. This is not that album. The beats are great. The flows are great. The lyrics are catchy and engaging. The film quotes are referenced with a wink rather than an adolescent stiffy. And the album builds. It takes you as a listener on. Journey. I like it. I like it rather a lot.
Not gonna do a review this time but instead bitch about how I had tickets to see Wu-Tang in September and bailed for reasons I barely even remember now, and they did a Liquid Swords set! So pissed that I missed that. A-
this album makes me want to get really into hip hop, so good
Joe Biden was right, this thing slaps
Not exactly the sort of person to listen to rap, but hey - I'm more than OK with listening to it if it means I begin to understand and appreciate what people listen to, and with this album in particular, I think I get it. Unafraid to use samples, lyrically complex, clean and sharp vocals...it's pretty good.
Liquid Swords doesn't distinguish itself with lyrics or flows, though I think it stands with contemporaries if not far ahead of them. The happy surprise was the way this record prefigures almost all hip-hop produced afterwards while retaining the nineties-Eastern grit. A great project to break a bit of a rap fast.
This record is a classic. Atmospheric, dark, incredible lyrics and beats. Still as good now as it was when it was released.
Yes. This was the best album on here in a looong time.
Example of a record heralded so much in the mid-90s amongst college friends & crowds, but which I never actually listened to. This "albums generator" exercise is already more than proving its value for music listeners like me who otherwise would prbly never have inititated the investment to explore such a consequential record like this independently, particularly given that rap & hiphop, while heavily respected, has otherwise not been a genre which previously connected w/ myself in any important level. That said, this album, along with Beasties' Paul's Bputique, is dfntly a game changer for me. So many things to enjoy, respect and appreciate. Lyrics first and foremost imo. Going thru every track's lyrics, i'm not sure if you can't make an argument of greatness when comparing against a modern day Dylan, while maintaining its own total signature & tone. Samples & background. On the third listen of this record, i am left very impressed by all of the tasteful samples and background accompaniment. From a production pov, my guess is that it takes as much, if not more, talent, skill, vision and discipline to score something like this as it does a respectable independent film. Where to punch in, where to cut out, where to ride the backbeat. To the rest of us mere mortals it may sound like an easy impulsive cakewalk. My guess is that each & every beat & phrase was the result of careful debate and intentional artistic license over & over. The care & vision shows. A wild chaos is telegraphed all over these tracks which in the end is anything but wild or chaotic. It is the cold, calculated control of master artists & musicians at the helm who recognized way beforehand that they were bottling magic nearly 30 yrs before the rest of us could manage to catch our breaths to be in a position to appreciate it.
A lyrical story from start to finish
I love Wu-Tang and the first wave of solo projects was pretty outstanding. I think it's debatable if this, Cuban Linx, or Tical is the best of that particular grouping but regardless this is damn good. A borderline 5, but if I'm being honest there are a couple tracks that keeping it from reaching that score.
Scrappy, raw, beats combine with the classic Wu-Tang flow of catchy hard-hitting truths and irreverence. designed for loud blasting, but I can't help but wonder why some of these beats have some extra layer of dissonance to 'em.
Great lyricism and atmosphere. Production is a bit generic wu-tangy though, which is partly great, but partly made me want something a bit different.
Relatively enjoyable - I'm a particular fan of the elliptical, paranoid lyrics and creepy atmosphere. As with many Wu Tang affiliated projects, it has the dusty, slightly uncanny feel of old found footage. What elevates this from three to four stars is '4th Chamber', one of my favourite rap tracks full stop. The sample from 'Shogun Assassin' that kicks it off is supreme, and it just gets better from there on in. Was 'Why is the sky blue?' the Wu equivalent to 'Fuckin' magnets, how do they work?'
Had never heard of this album, but was interesting to listen to as not what I'd ever normally put on. Especially at 6am in the morning ;-) Pretty good for not a hip-hop fan
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Liquid swords, Duel of the iron lic, Cold world, Shadowboxin, I gotcha back, Bible
An album so good that I'm sure it won't crack 3.0.
notes - gza is a member of wu tang clan and this album has a bunch of people youll recognize - produced by rza, features ghostface killah, inspectah deck, method man - after wu tang’s inital success, a couple of the members went on to do sole albums and this was gza’s second - the beats on this are so great, rza really created a vibe that matches gza’s calm lyrical delivery - i would definitely need to listen to this a couple more times to get the full meaning of a lot of the lyrics on here - he throws a LOT at you fav - 4th chamber - love the fuzzy and noisy samples here, and ghostface :) least fav - labels - didnt really stick with me after hearing it 4/5
typically when I hear 90s rap I'm not a huge fan. but this one did it for me. I thought it was great and some nice casual listening. I might have to revisit more 90s rap with a different perspective 8/10
Klassischer Boom-Bap-Rap mit geilen Sample-Beats!
Pas décevant, meilleur que ce que j'ai écouté de Wu Tang
Enjoyed the album. Haven’t realized before how great the rhymes and lyrics members of the Clan wrote and rhymes. Good album with interesting themes
It's a great album. I had not listened to the whole thing previously, but I had heard some of the songs before. This isn't a full-fledged Wu-Tang album but several of the members make an appearance. I would listen to it again. The only reason this is not getting 5 is because I found the samurai movie audio unnecessary.
Very good lyrical flow and I like the cinematic feeling that it gives the listener. Highlights are "Liquid Swords", and "4th Chamber".
Pretty good. Crass in a few spots
I really enjoyed this album, had classic 90’s bass lines and some good listens for the ears
Very recognizable, grim sounds and great lyricism.
Not a fan of rap, but damn, this is good stuff.
I enjoyed the lyricism of the album, and the concept of the music was very unique, especially the overlying plotline about a powerful warlord's son. Overall a very refreshing listen after the mindless lyrics in today's mainstream rap.
1995. Liquid Swords, 4th Chamber, Shadowboxin'
Dobaaaaar. Ko da film gledas. Beatovi su malo dosadni al vidi se da je veci fokus upret u tekst koji je u trenutcima wow.
It was great! I love 90’s hip hop/R&B
Try to not move your head to this engine album. You will fail.
What an influential album. Great listen, totally recommend if you're looking for new sounds. God showed me a song from this album, and I never thought to look further into it. But, glad it came up for my album of yesterday, it was quite fitting.
rap很酷
Nice and smooth.
Very good. Like swordsman a lot.
This is what I think about when I think about hip hop.
One of the Tangiest albums to ever Wu. Even though it's not technically a Wu-Tang album, it's got all of the Clan members on it and all of the weird kung-fu vibes of a Wu-Tang joint just cranked to 11. I enjoyed the hell out of this which is why it's getting high marks but it's still cheesy AF (like all Wu-Tang joints) which is why it's not getting a perfect 5. Still an utter blast, though.
A lyrical odyssey with great classic hiphop production. Storytelling at its finest and packs a great one-two punch in '4th Chamber' and 'Shadowboxin''. Impressive lineup of guests, and it's always nice to have the whole clan together.
How is this the first time I hear this record in it’s entirety? GZA’s vocabulary is insane and his flow likewise. Surgical precision; nothing less. While not flashy the beats are the perfect backbone for GZA and his guests often rough, harsh and honest storytelling. The focus on extremely lyrically heavy songs ends up being almost physically exhausting. But with lyrics like these it takes a lot more to actually grow tired of it.
Not my kind of music in general but I really like that it's a concept album with monologue bits, and the vibe was very chills (with hints of darkness) throughout.
Qualité efficace, ambiance dark qui met bien, ça sent fort le wu-tang et ça fais le taff fort ! A écouter plus en profondeur donc clairement j'ecouterais plusieurs fois
Very good album overall! Obviously very very Wu-Tang vibe. Perfectly dark atmosphere, RZA beat influence is felt everywhere and the Wu-Tang lyrisicm to match it. Some beats did not age too well unfortunately.
Minimalistic beats, but still very efficient. The lyrics are what flows the most here and I'll definitely have to listen to it again soon.
Really good hiphop album. It bing me back to skateshop early 2000's
B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth)
- I think I’d like this more if I listened to this at a different point of my life
This was fun and I enjoyed it more than I expected to.
This definitely reminded me of DJ Krush in parts. I liked it, but I felt like a number of the tracks were missing one final ingredient to make them great. I also thought the movie sound bites were a little overdone. Tracks I liked best were Labels and Shadowboxin' (❤️ Method Man)
Impressive lyrical gymnastics but lacks the tunes to match.
Good nineties sound. Familiarities with the wu-tang clan but has its own sound. Very east coast NYC sound.
I've never totally connected with the martial arts, ambiguously asian rap music of Wu Tang. This album is no exception. Some of the lyrics are clever, but I don't connect with the music.
More hip-hop. Still not my bag. 3
I found several things to like here and several things to not like. I'd say this album has both higher highs and lower lows than other hip hop albums, but at the end of the day it's still middle of the road.
Not my favorite hip-hop, but definitely not the worst.
Enjoyed this one, more than the Raekwon one last week. Not sure what it was - beats, flow, lyrical content - but it landed better with me. Still not my favourite genre to listen to for a whole album, but this was better than most.
The best way I can describe this music is “big boss shit”
It was fine. Didn't speak to me too much
It was alright. When I was less familiar with hip hop at the start of this list I probably would have rated this lower.
I never listen to rap or hip hop or whatever, but the fact that we get only the most early and groundbreaking on here is a real shortcut to knowing what to listen to. I did enjoy this
This is #day653 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to another solo release from the Wu-Tang Clan camp. I don't mind it, but I'm not sure I could really tell you how it differs from, say, a Ghostface Killah record I had a while back. Otherwise, it has pretty much everything I like about '90s hip-hop. That synth on Hell's Wind Staff / Killah Hills 10304, though. This is a strong 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day654.
A fairly engaging rap album, with a pretty listenable classic rap sound. It makes that sound grander though, giving it an almost cinematic quality at times. On the whole though, I can’t say that I found this especially interesting. I read that the samples are taken from a Samurai film that formed the basis of much of the themes and design of the album. To be slightly harsh, is that interesting enough to be the basis of a whole album? I can’t say I was persuaded.
Never come across this artist before. Enjoyed the smooth grooves behind the lyrics
Lyrics held my attention for a couple tracks. I didn't get the movie track insertions, but RAP as an art form does miss a mark with me.
It was mostly fine. Some good lyrics. I strongly dislike most lo-fi for misophonia reasons. Nothing really jumped out at me to add to my regular shuffle.
Great beats, and interesting lyrics.
I'm not having the best day to say the least, but let's just say there is nothing about this album that makes it more unique than any other 1990s Hip-Hop album. It's fine as it is, but I don't have an urge to listen to it again. If it wasn't created by a Wu-Tang Clan member(with the worst stage name by the way), it wouldn't be on this list. Favorite Track: "Living In The World Today".
Typical Wu Tang album with a high production value, movie samples and skillful raps. It's all a bit too serious for me, but certainly not bad.
I was pretty underwhelmed here. I love WuTang. But I felt that the production on this was pretty mid. Fun samples and ideas never really evolved from their first bars and it ended up feeling half-baked. And I honestly didn’t love GZAs flow. It felt stiff and kinda lazy. My favorite flow on this was RZA by a mile.
Technically, there’s only one Wu-Tang album on this list. Technically. There seems to be an endless supply of projects by individual WTC members, though. All abound with collaborations and posse raps with the other WTC members. I’m feeling a little exhausted by these solo-but-not-solo projects. You can practically hear me sighing. The end of “Gold” and its transition into “Cold World” was the first time I felt like this album did something that made it stand out from its counterparts. Best production goes to either “4th Chamber” or “Hells Wind Staff”. Some sinister, clean beats that loop well over 3-4 minutes. It’s very hard to get to granular about this project since there are many like it on the list. I suppose there’s some merit in this one not being as outwardly sexist. Lyrics are a bit more on the conscious side. Idk other than that. This must be how people feel about house music. Light 3/5
90s hip hop. Wu Tang member. Samples samurai film dialogue. Great flow.
Cool album. The samples of old movies were interesting and I've never listened to Wu-Tang really so this was kind of a cool introduction to GZA. Gold and B.I.B.L.E were my favorites. 6.4/10
