This isnt my bag, but i took two goes through this and i gently warmed to this. There is heart and warmth and good songwriting here. Its still country, but i didnt hate it

*sad cowboy emoji*

this is so sad alexa play despacito

This country?

Decent country album but did not wow me

Actually one of the stronger 70s country albums. First few songs had me hooked but by about the 4th song I didn’t get anything different. Not bad

I like older country, and the album started strong. I feel like it fizzled out though and get weaker has the album went on. 6/10

Grand tour wel een dikke plaat, rest ook wel maar moet toch een beetje onderscheid maken

Pleasant buttery voice easy listening

I couldn’t find the entire album. I could only find one song, but I did listen to several of his songs. Based on that I will give him a three. Classic country.

Did not expect the last song to be about celebrity culture

Нормально, но я бы не расстроился если бы умер, не услышав этот альбом

Decent country.

Starts out solid but loses its footing along the way. Overall decent as far as country goes.

velvet voice

Country

Good ol’ fashioned country. It’s a good album if you like the genre. The production quality is really something. Makes me wonder if tape recordings and the tubes were better than our fully digital modern recordings.

yee haw this one was fine

This isn't my type of music, but it's exactly what I would think good, traditional country music sounds like Personal enjoyment:3/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5

I’m just a fan of George Jones’ voice. Because of that, and the quality of the lyrics, I’m able to forgive that this is basically the same song over and over again. 3/5

Good crooning but the songs are a bit too repetitive.

Good country, nothing special in my opinion. Would have to go to the rise and fall of a midwest princess for that.

I would say this is a grand 'ol' tour that feels more like a nostalgia piece. I am not a big fan of country, but somehow it seems more palatable as a slice of history. Still can't embrace it wholeheartedly.

I really like country, but I had a hard time finding what made this album stand out — it felt pretty standard and just ticked the usual boxes.

Jones stops beating Tammy Wynette long enough to record a record with a couple of good songs

A very decent country album with 2 giant hits but not up to the level of some other country albums on this list.

It’s like a gospel album where the subject being worshipped is pussy.

I don't think I'm too familiar with George Jones, so hearing that this particular album was apparently his 50th release was pretty shocking to me. Perhaps I need to educate myself. Anyway, talk about a heartbreaker of a song to start things off ("The Grand Tour"). The remainder of the album plays in a similar vein too; comfy and crooning country classics. It doesn't really reach much further than that, but that's OK.

Pleasant enough but every song and story is the same… traditionally a grand tour takes you to countless wondrous sights, all different and magnificent. This is not so much a grand tour but a city (heart)break.

I like George Jones vocals and country style. The music is very specific to a time and era that I've long out grown. There are style elements that I'd add to new music but only to emphasize the era long ago. I'm more familiar with other tunes before and after this album. Mostly gimmicky tunes with word play or comedic storyline. My rating of this album sits in the middle too... great music but forgettable and not my current go to for an album pull.

I would have had a predictable knee-jerk review not too long ago that would have dismissed this as the cliché "lost my girl, my job, and my truck on the same day" country fare. But after a couple of listens and I can appreciate a lot of what's going on here, and try to take the context of when this was released into account. But... it does get terribly long in the slow lament and after four or five tracks, ol' George has lost my sympathy and attention. The closer tips the scale to the other side. Not sure if George got called out for his drunken behavior or if was sticking up for a comrade, but boy, he got his panties in a wad and doth protest a bit too vehemently. So after all that: bummer about your girl, and your job, and your truck.

As classic country as it gets... no surprises

The Grand Tour is George Jones fiftieth studio album, and is regarded as one of his best albums. His prolific career was overshadowed - to an extent - by his more successful ex-wife, Tammy Wynette. The title track is the story of his divorce, and the heartbreak around it. The rest of the album follows suit; these are songs of heartbreak and loneliness. The album is classic George Jones country - based on his rich voice, and performed in his near-gospel style of country ballads.

Very much what you would expect from a classic country album. But i'm not a country fan so a generous 3 stars.

Oh I remember parts of this album. My Grandma loved country and western so I have memories of playing in grandmas kitchen and hearing Willie, Waylon and George Jones. I remembered some lyrics of The Grand Tour and surprised myself! Country isn't a genre I enjoy so being able to recall lyrics was wild! This album is going to get added to my library. The Grand Tour is just, great. His voice and ability to tell a story is great. The songs are short but they are good. I enjoyed this album far more than I expected to.

I've had a decent number of classic country albums generated recently, and I'm won over a little more with each one. Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through) was the standout for me. I listened to the original recorded version by Johnny Rodriguez as well, and they both sound great in different ways. George Jones sings with tenderness and care and has such a lovely, silky voice.

decent album, wholesome ideas behind the tracks

Easy listening

been binge watching king of the hill with my partner hank would approve of this album.. im on the fence

3 stars for the nice voice as country isn't my cup of tea...

Pretty sleepy little country album but overall enjoyable.

ja ganz cutes country album, aber nothing special

I really do seem to find many of these old county records kind of charming/a vibe. George Jones has a great voice, and the content of the songs are pretty unique. Pleasant album! 3.4/5 -> 3/5

Well written well sung and well played with thematic consistency and mastery. I just hate steel guitar and country vocals.

There's nothing hugely wrong with this album, but I can't say I'd listen to it again, country love songs just don't do it for me. That said, I did enjoy the final track Our Private Life, a more upbeat and cynical song about the intrusions faced when you achieve recognition.

Pleasant country music

A very enjoyable country album. I think I'd be happy to return to this in the future, but I wouldn't ever seek it out. There's more diversity in the songs than I expected after the first half.

I've heard old timey country. I understand that people like this. But "Our Private Life" is the most relevant commentary on the modern age, and it was written before smartphones were a thing. That's the crux of the album.

It was okay.

This surprised me as I usually dislike country, but it was so classic that I just really found myself enjoying this style of music for once.

Some say George Jones was the best country singer ever and this album does not present any evidence to the contrary! Short and sweet, funny, sad, lots of pedal steel and violins. Traditional Country that modern day singers try and mostly fail to emulate.

жалко что не алл май ексис лив ин тексыс но пойдёт

Seems like the kind of music you listen to while drinking alone after you lost custody of your kids to your ex, but it’s only 28 minutes so it gets a 3

Wasn't bad, but not my kind of thing. Was absolutely buzzing to see a sub-30-minute album though.

Different to what I normally listen to but not a bad album

two country albums in a row? sorry too much for me, didnt enjoy it as much as i could... although it deserves 3 stars doesnt it?

Good example of style, a little too calm for my country tastes but pleasant.

Country af.

Honky-tonk y baladas country clásicas de los 70, con letras sencillas pero elegantes, en su mayoría de desamor. Un álbum sólido dentro de su estilo, con una voz excelente, aunque poco más que destacar. No está mal.

feels like part of the “Complete Unknown” cinematic universe

Was a bit hesitant about this, but gave it a listen. I think it's firmly part of a previous generation and sound, a bit like the old crooners. But it's pleasant enough, wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again though

Feel like this guy is one of the top 5 all timers. Must have been a legendary drinker. Typical sad country western songs but not overly twangy which I made it pleasant.

Classic country

5/10 This sounded like the literal default country album, the one you would play the aliens if they asked to hear the genre Very well done, goood singing and lyrics but just not really one for me Best: The Grand Tour

The guy had an incredible voice. Too bad he wasted his life away on booze.

I appreciate this album way more after watching Mike Judge's "Tales from the Tour Bus". Homie could crush! In all honesty I've been getting more into country these days, so I enjoyed this. Hits a little less corny in my old age.

Old time twangy country

I’m sure it’s great for what it is. I just don’t have the language to appreciate it

I mean, it's a pretty run-of-the-mill country album from the 70s. I don't have a ton to say about this album. Fortunately, that means that I don't have anything major to say that's negative. There's not any grand praise I have to give for The Grand Tour, but I will say that this album is good. The singing isn't too annoying. The writing is solid. The opening title track in particular is quite interesting with its writing. That song is probably the most memorable one on the album. The others work, but don't really stand out. The sound is pleasant. Country music still isn't really my thing overall, but I can respect the classic, and this album is a bit of a classic. Good job George Jones! 3/5.

Surprisingly really enjoyed this. Do I think it needs to be on this list? Probably not. But is it a pretty good country album? Yes. It’s a good listen even if it doesn’t seem particularly groundbreaking.

I like older country, but this wasn't the best.

Folks love this guy! I’m not there. He’s the country crooner, but that never worked for me. I like my country with a bit of rasp and dirt, torn jeans and sweat.

Not offended by it but not in love. It was pleasant. Of the country out there it’s my fav kind.

Honestly boring put me to sleep

Old country is good country

smooth

George Jones sure has a voice like butter. His vocals make the Grand Tour an album that's so easy and pleasant to listen to. In fact, his voice is deceptive when, say, you pay attention to the lyrics of the title song! I'm not entirely sure why this album made the cut, but I had no qualms about listening to it at least. From what I gather, Jones was a big deal in his prime, though I suspect he isn't remembered so much these days.

It was fine. George Jones doesn't really resonate with me, but he's a country legend for a reason. He was a big mover in the development of country music and you can tell how he began to push things away from the more classic country iterations towards what the 80s and 90s would adopt as a country sound.

Country heartbreak crooners and one rolicking roasting the tabloid industry. I've never listened to George Jones before but knew his stature and can't deny that voice one bit!

I’m insensitive

The Weatherman is Chad. 3.5

always a sucker for a little twang but i don't really feel anything else off of this that would compel me to return very often

That's about as country as it gets and the guy's got a voice to deliver it, that's for sure. But country being country - it doesn't offer a whole lot in variety - songwriting, arrangements or lyrical content. There are times when the album honks way too much and the tonk is all over the place - and that's when non-country enthusiasts step out. There are standouts, such as The Grand Tour, She Told Me So and a few others.

Just really standard old heartbreak country music, nothing really remarkable about it except for the last track, Our Private Life which had some amusing things to say about people obsessed and celebrities' private lives, something I wasn't expecting to hear.

La quintessence du country dans ses thèmes, ses arrangements et sa très belle interprétation qui ne verse jamais dans le sirupeux.

Glad musik och lagom längd på skivan.

Pleasant all around.

Old country, good chill vibes

Country, what a sound. All sounded the same to me ultimately, but it was pleasant enough background music. 2 star is a bit too low, so low 3 star for me!

Mwah Wel ok

Good tunes in the genre of slow dancing country songs

I’m not too big of a fan of this type of charity music country but it’s growing on me

If you like classic country with more than a little pop (he’d be angry if he read that), you’ll probably really like this. And he’s got a great voice for it, though I am a bit partial to the East Texas accent. It’s done well, but it’s not really my thing.

Initial review: Nice, but not for me. Starting to consider this type of country for certain situations though. Sunny fall day, some George Jones for ambiance. We’ll see. Second review: It took me a while to get into the pace of this, but now I’m fearing I could get into country. It’s very comforting, makes life feel a lot simpler. Something is nice about not having to seek anything from this and just listen. Less is sometimes more? Getting into country would be a dramatic transformation.

Mildly entertaining. I can see how this influenced a lot of country in the 80s and 90s. All that said, there are other Jones albums that are more interesting/better. This felt like the cliche of country 3 stars for country, 2 for me personally

Old country is just so cool. Liked this more than Ray Price, but this really made me want to go back and listen to Elvis, which I did, and it was great. Overall this album never really gets past good vibes, for me.

I don't know that I've ever heard of George Jones, but I've really enjoyed the older country albums that I've listened to so far on this list, so I expect I'll probably like this album. I enjoyed this album a fair amount. I'm a sucker for that old school honky-tonk sound, and this album delivered on that. The pedal steel guitar playing was fantastic, and George Jones's crooning was an excellent vehicle for these melancholy songs. The songs were well written, and there was some clever word play on some of them that I really liked. The biggest thing that I didn't like on this album is that almost all of it was melancholy, slower songs, and I would have enjoyed more up-tempo songs like "The Weatherman" and "Our Private Life." Still, this was a pretty good album, but if it's old school country I'm in the mood for, I'd probably reach for something else.

-now THIS is music for old men if I’ve ever heard it… not even to say it’s bad. It’s a pretty nice vibe and more or less consistent in quality all the way through -it is absolutely NOT helping to beat the “all country music sounds the same” allegations honestly though -Favorites are The Grand Tour, Darlin’, and Our Private Life

Good songs but left me wanting more. You can’t be sad over the same three instrumentals, George.

Jones has maybe the quintessential Country Voice, and the songs are really gut-wrenching and beautifully composed, but I am also totally not the audience and almost certainly never will be.

I didn't mind this. Nothing special but I've been listening to a lot of old folk and country lately so was in the right mood for it. I guess it's all quite generic and repetitive but it feels nice and cosy.

Johnny Cash-like, but most is kinda slow/boring. I like the Weatherman though

George Jones is a legend but I didn’t love this album. He’s got some bangers but none of them are on this one.

This was a bit repetitive and somehow creepy

I find it really, really hard to care about classic Country like this. But a bonus point for being well recorded.

So county

Cozy country vibes that I'll keep with me in case I move to a trailer park at some point.

I used to have quite a bigoted assumed dislike for country. I'm over that. This record is great. Old fashioned, tear-jerking country ballads.

Easy album to listen to Standout songs: She'll love the one shes with She told me so Pass me by

Proper country music in its original form. I actually enjoy this kind of music sometimes. Of course it sounds old and dated, but there is something charming about that classic, uniquely American sound. The big problem I have with this album is the lack of variety. Has George Jones ever written a song that's not a love song? The lyrics are all the same.

I mean, it's classic country, so it's not going to get me going, but this is pretty nice across the board. He's got a nice voice, full of emotion. This is unapologetic, heart on the sleeve kind of stuff. Some of the earlier tracks I found quite effective, especially with the big swells in music. 2.5 rounded up.

Bouncy smooth country

I actually recognized a few songs. Pretty sure from my younger years at my grandma’s house. He’s no Kenny Rogers, but I enjoyed this album

Not his best work and I wish it were a bit longer, but these are quality country songs and I had fun. He’s never had too much range and the songs on this one don’t go into anything deeper than what’s already been covered in the genre. On the other hand, great instrumentation and singing. Interesting writing at times. Maybe even a hit. Maybe? 3/5

For country music it's not too bad! That said it is still country music so it can't be higher than a 3

The Grand Tour is a perfectly fine album. The music and vocals all sound pleasant enough to the ears but don't really do anything super interesting. The album also runs at a quick pace too which is something i have fairly mixed feelings about. I do like that the songs don't ever get tedious because i bet they would if they went on for too long. But at the same time, the songs are too short to have enough time to really sink in causing a lot of the transitions from song to song feel very jarring and awkward. This isn't really the best album out there but i have listened to far worse. Best Song: The Weatherman Worst Song: Borrowed Angel

Old country is so much better and more authentic than country from more recent times. I like George Jones' voice and the soothing music was pleasant. Though country is not a genre I like very much or I listen to on a regular basis, it was a good listen overall.

Country's not really my thing but glad to have listened anyway.

You cannot deny his abilities as a singer. And the musicianship on this album, as in most country music albums, is first-rate. I'm just not a big country music fan.

I thought this was a good way to start the morning. Not my favorite style of music. But old country is miles ahead of the new stuff.

This was old style country and it was not bad. Nothing struck me as amazing, but it is something that would be good for a night around a fire or out fishing.

Good, old-fashioned country. Beautiful crooning with some gorgeous slide guitar adding nice details in the background. The opening title track is devastating. The final lines are heartbreaking. “She Told Me So” is a funny song about a guy in denial about his lover’s fidelity. Fun premise and great chorus.

I love the intro song with it's piercing yet smooth vocals and the contrasting low piano strikes. I can't get over how well his voice sits in the mix. If I was really into classic country crooner music I'd love George Jones. The style inhibits some of my enjoyment of it. "A Picture Of Me (Without You)" and "The Grand Tour" were really exceptional though.

++: The Grand Tour, Our Private Life +: Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through), She'll Love the Ones She's With, Once You've Had the Best, The Weatherman, Borrowed Angel, Mary Don't Go 'Round, Who Will I Be Loving Now +-: Darlin', She Told Me So 7,2/10

It's fine, fun even

I was unable to listen to this album. I couldn't find it nor could I easily assemble its tracks from other albums.

Groovin through George Jones’ pain

finally

Really good album

It's not for me, but I do recognize the talent, the voice, the songwriting and the appeal for other people. I'm allergic to country music, though.

Definitely not in my zone but pretty much the most classic country I can think of. Some good ones though, but also some depressing shit.

The sound of my childhood, so smooth. Not any outstanding songs or great classics, but I do like She'll Love The One She's With.

Okuuu, 6,5/10

This was a wild listen for 28 minutes. George has 80 studio albums and he's pictured on every one. Smile George, smirk George, look serious George, show the sideburns George, look drug addled George This isn't my style of music, but I can see the appeal. George has a smooth delivery that would be popular with the masses.

3.2/5. listened 2x catchup on 5/28/24. for some old school country, it's actually good and catchy.

This was country music.

A really solid example of the 70s Nashville sound. This record is very produced. Lots of backup vocals, which give off a doo-wop vibe at times. Also lots of orchestration which is not a good addition in my opinion. They could've just kept it at the band + slide guitar and it would sound a lot better. The orchestral arrangements just leave this feeling overproduced and poppy (which might've been the goal). I tend to prefer the dirtier outlaw country sound but I can appreciate this as well. Important for music history and worth a listen for anyone who is looking to diversify their musical knowledge.

It’s very nice. Short, but still sweet

Well, if a country twang album is something to listen to before I die, it might as well be this one. George Jones is country twang. Lots of steel guitar, sad accompanying strings and heartache. "The Grand Tour" us the perfect example. The album ends with a song called "Our Private Life" which laments in no uncertain terms the intrusive nature of fame.

pretty average as country goes. basically what you'd expect

I like George Jones a lot, but this album was not great.

A new one on me and enjoyed the listen.

Nice songs of another time

quite cheesy and cliché but its also quite fun

Never heard heard of him before, but his Wikipedia biography was quite a read. Country's way out of my comfort zone, but the guy had a good voice.

it's a tuff one...the music is fine, just really old style and if you listen to it now for the first time - it is REALLY hard to get into. If you grew up with it, I'm sure you would love it. 2.5

Very old country, far removed from the outlaw version I love. Almost borders on cliché at points, with songs about "borrowed women" and "she left me & I'm sad". Decent for what it is, but not for me. A worthwhile addition to the list, and one I am happy to have heard, but not an artist I am likely to come back to.

Country. Agradable.

Pretty solid country album.

The most divorced album of all time (complimentary)

Never listened to George Jones but it was about what I expected. Not bad.

Classic country at its finest

Pretty good, decent Sunday morning music. Not really my bag though. Good country music I suppose.

Good stuff! I’d recommend it to anyone looking for older country sound. Repetitive but also that’s part of the charm? Idk 3.2

Honestly while I like Jones the album somehow felt repetitive in its short expression

Still don't like country, but this is the stuff I have an easier time tolerating

I just keep proving to myself that I don’t really hate country music. This is just another country album that I’ve enjoyed listening to. It’s a very particular kind of country that I like, I just don’t have the word for it. The songs were all a bit samey though. 7/10 Top 3: 1. The Grand Tour 2. Pass Me By (If You’re Only Passing Through) 3. Who Will I Be Loving Now

Great sideburns … and harmonies.

I surprisingly enjoyed this!

like George jones his voice is smooth but this is really just a mid country album (and I like country so this is not biased) 5/10

Didn't sound bad, just isn't my thing, I'm not sure if this is mediocre or outstanding in some way. Pleasant listen though.

Mid. Not a bad listen but all the songs sounded the same. Very representative of 70s country I think. 5/10

Much better than I was expecting. I've really started to appreciate and enjoy country music before the 90s boom (which also isn't that bad). This is heads and tails above whatever hot garbage they spew out of Nashville these days.

Great 50's era country. Can't get much better.

Ihan jees countrya. Pitäs varmaan ymmärtää enemmän jotta ymmärtäsi enemmän. 3/5

Interesting country roots album

Title track is great. The rest is not George’s best. Still, it’s ok.

Honky Tonk Nigga. I liked it def one of the best Country Album i had to listen to yet. MF has so many albums so i guess he was a hustler.

Mopey but well made

Canciones de country clásicas, algunas de las cuales han quedado demasiado clásicas. No son malas canciones, solo ya anticuadas.

Country. Agradable.

This man just wants to SMASH, god some of these older lovey dovey albums are just really desperate sounding dudes (not really but I find it funny all the songs revolve around this) anywho, 2.8

It was nice. Some good old country music!

Not the biggest country fan, but it was okay. Nothing life changing or anything, but a pleasant distraction.

Good but a little boring

Me pareció algo aburrido, pero no está mal. Es como una etapa menos evolucionado de “Derek and the dominos”.

Wouldn't necessarily add it to my playlist but appreciate it for what it is. A quintessential country record that'll make a cowboy cry. My favorite part is the intro. Step right up, Come on in.

Well howdy doody. Grab me a sarsaparilla and let's listen to some good ol' George Jones. Dude has some good pipes and it wasn't a bad listen. Especially at 28 mins

Interested in listening to this. Honestly NEVER heard of this guy. This is country. I don't like country. This is old school country. Gotta check this out. Omg this reminds me of my Papa, my Dad's dad. I believe this is what he would be listening to when I was a kid. Most likely won't be able to get through this whole album. we'll see. 4 songs in and I definitely remember this album, even these songs playing in my Papa's car driving around SF. Alright I'm done, got through almost the first 7 tracks. Pretty classic country. Too slow and soft for me. I am more about the Johnny Cash type of country.

Good voice 👍

Country is not really my thing, but this wasn't too bad. Maybe its just old country I can get on board with. This new country crap pisses me off so bad.

A great example of 1974 Nashville sound: impeccable production, session musicians at the top of their game, and Jones’s voice is incredible….BUT the subject matter and the way it’s approached; damn I need a drink…

Love classic George Jones. This doesn't have his greatest hits. But, still nice!

Krabbelde lekker voort best van genoten. Zou m 3.5 zetten

Honestly, the old country stuff on this list is kind of a vibe, makes you feel like some southern USA farmer. Love the twang in the voice too, good fun.

Epitome of 70's country. George's voice sets him apart from other singers of the era. That being said, album gets a little repetitive.

I really like good country music and it is close to my heart as it is what my mother and her family listened to when I grew up. George Jones is one of the singers that I always knew but he was never one of the family's favorites. I knew songs like "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and "The One I Loved Back Then" but outside of those hits I really didn't know his music like that. So it was to my surprise that he would have an album included on this list. I knew he was a legend but this list has a major lack of country albums so his inclusion caught me by surprise. Jones was always known to stick to his guns more that just about any other country singer and that is apparent on this album. It is straight classic country to a T. Personally, I love a good classic country ballad and that is what this album is full of. This is not really the most diverse album in terms of song structure but that is not atypical of country albums at this time. That being said this album still manages to impress because Jones is one of the best vocalists in country music history and he is a very good songwriter as well. This allows for enough variation song for song that the lack of difference in song structure is not a massive hinderance on the entertainment of the album. "The Grand Tour" is a really good opener for this album and was definitely made to be the hit of this album as it has the most pop-y sound and structure. It also has one of his best vocal performances on the album. My favorite part of the song is at the start of the last few verses his vocal pacing slows down and then are backed by some really nice strings. I think it is definitely one of the best country songs of the seventies and probably in the top 5 in terms of quality of instrumentation. The next song is "Darlin'" which is one of if not my least favorite songs on the album. I just don't really like how his vocals are layered on this chorus. I also never was a huge fan of pet names (by that I mean I hate them) so it just makes this song grating to my ears. Luckily, George follows this up with a series of some of the best songs on the album starting with "Pass Me By", which is another typical country ballad but what makes this stand out to me is the fact that it has some of the best songwriting on the album. It is not full of super complex lyrics but just a nice, simple, to the point story by George about a woman who is looking for a temporary relationship. I have no issue with casual sex or anything of the sorts but there is a sweetness to his writing on this song that really makes the song stand out. It is not that he is shaming her or anything but just him letting her know that he is not looking for that sort of relationship and at the end of the second verse he even states he hopes to not fall in love with the woman because he doesn't want his heart to get stepped on. This coupled with a really good vocal performance makes this a top song for me. This is followed up by a song that is better than this song in just about every way. "She'll Love the One She's With" is another song with really strong writing, vocals and more interesting instrumentation. It is a really quaint song about a woman who he is infatuated with but she does not feel nearly as strong as he does and despite this she still loves him. "Once You've Had The Best" is another song in this run of tracks with great lyrics and really good vocals. Honestly when I first heard this song I sort of thought it was weird. Like who makes a song saying they knew their ex would come back because "there's nothing better once you've had the best". I even told my sister about how weird this song was and then she essentially said no you idiot he is talking about the woman and how he was not looking for anyone else because he already had the best. That made the song make so much more sense and after a few more relistens knowing this it became one of my favorites. The next track "The Weatherman" is the first non ballad on the album and it is the customary country two step that is one all these classic country albums. It is a nice pace change that doesn't sacrifice the songwriting that has been consistently great on this album. While it is not a super mind-blowing or revolutionary track by itself, it provides a lot to this album in terms of variety and in my opinion really works well. "Borrowed Angel" is a cover of the classic Mel Street hit. I personally am not a big fan of covers for the most part, unless they are really good, and George's version is not nearly as good as the original. The original feels a little faster paced which works better for this track to me and it has more full instrumentation which is also better on this track. George's version is a fine cover but it is nothing to write home about for me. Probably my least favorite track on the album. "She Told Me So" is a fine ballad that I personally don't think is all that special. It has some of the weakest writing on the album in my opinion and I think it is generally a skip for me. "Mary Don't Go Around" ends the short run of underwhelming tracks. It has really good vocals and is a nice pace change that is sorely needed. The lyrics are nothing to write home about but it has the a aforementioned vocals and production going for it. "Who Will I Be Loving Now" leads us back to the ballads but it is on the good writing side of things. It is just a sweet little song about how he is lost after being broken up with. It is a little clingy but not to the extent that it makes this song feel stalker-ish and overall I would say is around the top half of songs on the album. "Our Private Life" is a fun little track to end the album off. It is the first song in a while to feature an interesting theme in that it is about the relationships between celebrities and their fans as well as the lack of privacy provided to celebrities. I am not one to baby celebrities because they get plenty in return for their lack of privacy but I can agree with some of the sentiments. He is totally right about people caring too much about celebrities in the first verse and in the third he is right about the fact that some celebrities are held to ridiculously high, above human standards. Overall I think this is a solid country album by one of the legends of the genre. It's brevity makes it a nice easy listen but it tails off pretty hard in the second half of the album. Though, I do think the highs on this album are pretty big highs. Would I include this album on my list of 1001 best. Maybe but honestly I think there are better picks from other country artists and even from Jones himself. "Dreaming My Dreams" is one of the 2-3 best country albums of all time imo and it is not on the list. Sammi Smith, Tammy Wynette, Kris Kristofferson, Chris Stapleton, Clint Black, George Strait and Patsy Cline all have country albums I would pick over this, not to mention Jones's own "I Am What I Am" which I think is better. I think just like with 90's R&B/New Jack Swing there is a massive lack of the genre on this list. I don't understand how you can have hundreds of art rock, blues rock, singer-songwriter and post-punk albums but can't have 20 country albums. Just because it is not the most critically acclaimed genre does not mean you can't find more then 15 country albums that are great. I did not even like country growing up because it was shoved down my throat so much and I still would have put more than 15 country albums on the list. Either way this is a solid album but not something mind-blowing 7/10.

not good. not bad.

Hidas tempoista countrya.

Not a fan of country but this was decent.

Not entirely my cup of Thea but overall pretty ok

Like the feel of country music. But lyrics are depressing. But that's country in general. Usually all about women troubles

I don't hate country

Lekker country achtig, beetje Tom Jones stijl

Country when it was still listenable

Always liked the sweet, sentimental sound of older country. This album is great, I like Jones’s voice

3.5 - 4 Atmospheric songs with great lyrics, but I wouldn’t call it a very diverse album. It’s very much about heartbreak and only heartbreak about one specific person (unless I wasn’t listening close enough, which is likely the case). So, the album felt like it was kinda going in a circle with no mountains or valleys, and eventually it was like “I’ve heard this song before,” when I actually hadn’t but it was so similar to the previous that I confused myself. That may also just be a hallmark of this particular sect of country. (Except the last song, which felt thrown in there.) I highly appreciated that it was under 40 minutes and that it did build a world for me, even if the world wasn’t in technicolor.

Nice bit of old country, makes me feel like I own a ranch in Nashville.

I'm not a big country fan, new or classic, yet I seem to be exposed to it often. And then this reminded me of my grandpa, which felt nice this morning. The steel slide was prominent throughout and potentially related, the poor dude needed to learn how to stay in a relationship if it's going to break his heart so many times.

This was fine, but not earth shaking. She Told Me So was funny.

Pleasant

I know this is considered one of the peaks of George’s career and it really is a very good 70s country record but it lacks the punch of some of my favorites of his and is more a collection of really good songs than a full on album.

Some sweet minimal earnest country. I’m not passionate for the genre, but this is perfectly pleasant and tolerable.

Yee-haw

This was a classic early country album. I like the vibes, I think it is very inviting and warm sounding. I probably wouldn't put it on for most occasions, but when it is the right time I feel like this album would be my top choice for country music of this style. No one song was more remarkable than the next in my opinion though, but to be fair I did listen to this more passively than the other albums so far. I'm going to give it a three star rating because it really didn't wow me.

This is from 1974? Sounds like the 50's. Does time run slow in the south? This album sounds like it's sung over some SpongeBob music. A lot of these songs are kinda sad. Nothing stood out to me in particular. It's not really my kinda music but it's easy listening and none of the songs outstay their welcome. Mr. Jones is certainly a good singer. The whole album comes in at 28 minutes.

New to me. Obviously a famous classic. Not my thing really. Most tracks are the formulaic country of the era. His voice is golden, but the tracks are not the best. lots of 1-4-5 progressions, walking base lines and chorus starting on the 5. Formulaic. I guess this is where the tropes come from. . . But still it is not the best in class of its own genre. Title track is the epitome of 70's country - sad, poignant heartache. "The weatherman" and "Who will I be loving now" are good tracks. But the remaining ones are nothing special.

Country roads, take me away from this album

Been a while since I've heard any country, especially this kind of country, so it was a nice turn for me. Good reminder for me that when the genres and styles are varied, they tend to sound better to me than when it's too similar for too long, be it here or in any other listening forum. I don't recall hearing of him or hearing any of these songs before now. Sure, some of the songs are a bit croony and a little corny at times, but my ear perceives these tracks as sincere and enjoyable. Nice to hear something different today.

Gemütlicher Country

i'm always a bit partial towards nashville sound

I like this for the same reasons I like most country from the early 70s and before: the almost comedic irony of the song titles, super simple compositions, chronic heartbreak. I mean, 'Mary Don't Go 'Round'. I mean...

Oosh. Archetypal country. I instinctively want to reject, so I must fight against. He was married to Tammy Wynette, therefore has a KLF number of 2. Initially, I can take any one song in isolation as a perfect mood setter, the whole album, just no. Longer it goes on, the more I feel I am indoctrinated. Might be the wine, it's took me till 11pm to get through this 28 minute album.

As far as Country goes it's pretty bearable- great voice and musically varied and kept my interest. Not at all too marshmallowy and the production keeps it together well. Not bad.

-i have never heard of george jones tbh -oh i LOVE his voice -i love old timey country a lot like cash and this guy apparently -i LOVE darlin the chorus of voices singing “darlin” was really beautiful -the songs are more lowkey but i kinda like that -not sure i like this croony chill stuff as much as other country i have heard but im enjoying it a lot -another 3 star SORRY! i really wish there were half star ratings 😭😭😭

This was fine. I didn't think much of it, but I'd still take this over any modern country. 2.5/5

I saw this called something like the country equivalent to Sinatra’s In the Wee Small Hours, and it tracks. Not really my thing, but I can see this being a cathartic half hour if you just went through a rough breakup. Seriously, when are we getting one of Frank’s albums on here? C

This has a calming kind of charm to it for me honestly. Not gonna wanna listen to it often or anything, but hey. Call it a 3.5.

Decent country album, nothing really grabbed my attention but it was a pleasant listen all the way through.

Enjoyable country music by my tastes!

Good album. Something different. Enjoyable but nothing overly exciting.

Probably wouldn't listen to that again.

Good old-fashioned steel pedal poignant country. Slow and low.

AJ: might be the most country dude I’ve ever heard. What a voice. What a drunk!

Nice background music.

Apart from the hit single, this didn't really resonate with me. The single, though, is pain made into music.

yee haw

This is a solid old country album, there is nothing that I don't like, and as someone that doesn't like country that's impressive. This is a 3, nothing stood out but nothing was painful or hurt to listen to.

Country. Agradable.

ну это не мерзкое кантри но всё равно кантри. они слишком сладкие!

Really enjoyed this. Maybe because I don't listen to much country music all the songs were enjoyable

I like the idea of this (I love a bit of country melancholy) - and Our Private Life at the end was quite fun. There are some good songs on here - Pass Me By, for instance - but I can't say that these are even the best that Jones has written, and he is not my favourite country singer either. It feels very of its time, and a bit 'heartbreak by numbers' in places. Probably works better if you are feeling more lovelorn.

Sad Cowboy Music 2

Yeeeeeeeehaw

What a sad sack. You can’t shoot at your wife and expect her to stay, dummy. I probably won’t come back to this. It’s not the satirical country everyone knows, but god damn is it close.

I actually dig some of this older country music. While it's not my daily listening, I enjoyed this album and could see myself playing it again.

Putting aside my hate for country, this was good.

Pleasant classic country

this is the country music I always make fun of. For fuck sake I wanted to make more fun but found it suprisingly very good

Unbelievably cliche, but very well done. Just enough instrumentation to keep it fresh, while not feeling overdone.

This wasn’t bad! I’d give this 3.5. Not my genre of music really but there were some good songs on here

Hmm. This was one of the more enjoyable American country albums I've heard so far. Not sure what this has that some of the other ones I liked less didn't have, maybe it caught me on the right day? It certainly made for decent driving music on a sunny evening. It did drag on a little bit though, it was mostly too slow, but there were a couple of songs that picked it up a little. Dunno if I'll really come back to this any time soon but it was okay. Favourite: Our Private Life

Add another one to the 'Country Boomer Doesn't Understand Why Women Don't Like Him' pile.

I'm not real big on country, though this era is so much better substance wise than current country. This is pretty simple, fun, music. It's enjoyable to listen to.

Fine. Possibly a bit morose

Country with a lot of schmalz can be nice on a journey. It evokes certain emotions that Jones's voice transports over everything you need in country. It's an album you'd present to a newbie in the genre. He might not be too impressed but nothing much can go wrong too.

Nice soul-saving country. I wouldn't add it to my playlist, but anyway, sounds nice and pleasant.

Good old fashioned country, my guilty pleasure. This stuff gets better the more you drink too!

Pleasant 3/5

Makes me feel like I’m wandering the desert in Fallout

first listen i like it but still a little too country for me

That's country.

5/10. It reminds me of Marty Robbins, but the without the cowboy charm to lighten up the downtrodden lyrics. Jones' occasional sarcasm helps to offset this, but this only really shone through on "Our Private Life", which at least ended things on a positive note, and is what pushed this above a 4/10.

At least it's short? 5/10

I think i liked this more than other old country albums.

Highlights: "The Weatherman," "Pass Me By," "Our Private Life" This album gets credit for seeming to work for a larger concept, exploring humiliation in more ways than one. Letting his wife leave, he brings the public in, cynically giving them the things he knows they want, before tearing them down for showing up at all. Like with the ambivalent romantic attitudes in here, the contradictions feel very intentional, part of the struggles he wants to convey. Jones had long posed a stand for real country against sugarcoated high production schmaltz, but many of this album's highlights and commercial successes stoop to swelling string arrangements and flocking choirs. But if this was a sort of self-destructive choice in its way, throwing away integrity in a crisis of faith, he wasn't wrong about what would happen. People loved to watch him bleed. It's also a fun listen; the dreariness of the various midlife crisis numbers is concise, with some charming sentiments like in "Pass Me By" where love isn't a game anymore, and there's plenty of punctuation with uptempo sardonic numbers. Good performances on top of it all make it a successfully intimate album, which is one of the things that makes country music great.

George Jones is an artist that knows how to make some of the saddest country songs. He has a good ability to make you feel relaxed and then hit you with the problems that life brings. His songs are short and concise. He made country music for everyone and country music how it should be made. This was a decent album, wanted it to be longer but still good. 6.9/10 (nice)

George Jones has an incredible voice, but I can't imagine an album where every song sounds the samer than this one. Then, out of nowhere, a song where he rails on his fans for listening to gossip. I understand the appeal but it's not for me.

I like George Jones but was unable to find this full album. Gave it a 3 as filler until I can give it a proper listen.

This album was great, just what I needed this morning

Country at its best (?)

I'm not the biggest country fan but I don't mind the folky stuff. This record was pretty standard I think. As far as my undeveloped palette knows, this was a mediocre standard record. I guess one track I thought was a highlight was "She'll Love The One She's With". I enjoyed the record more than I disliked it so it's still a positive listen. Not something I'll revisit though. Personal Enjoyment - 6.5 Songwriting - 7 Lyrics - 7 Originality - 6 Production Value - 9 Artwork - 8 Overall - 7.0

Old people music

Not what I expected from a country album, I ended up liking it a lot more than I had anticipated. I might end up listening to some more old country in the future now. The songs I liked the most were The Grand Tour and She'll Love the One She's With,

solid classic country sound.

(anguished crying)

Felt like "this is nice...I guess?" the whole time. I get the older country vibes, and I do like it, but I'm not sure if I like an album full of it. Definitely don't love it lyrically, as it made me too sad. On VALENTINE'S DAY.

Country clàssic de manual, amb una interpretació de primer nivell i unes composicions una mica genèriques, però que la veu de Jones i els arranjaments les milloren. Si pateixes de mal d'amors, alguna de les lletres et fan empatitzar força

Of all the country albums ever made, this was absolutely one of them.

The Grand Tour is American country music artist George Jones' 39th album. It's one of his greatest albums and was well received by critics. The album peaked at 11 on the Billboard Country albums chart. I really liked this country album.

Not my jam but appreciate it historically and musically

3/5. Honestly a surprise of how good this was. The latter half of the album is not as good but still an enjoyable listen.

Country. Ni fu ni fa.

3 not my style of music

Surprised me with how it kept my interest

Pleasant yet forgettable - besides the gorgeous title track the rest of the record is very homogenous and blends into itself too easily.

jammy and comfy, changed my opinion on country music :)

That's a whole lot of rootin and a whole lot of tootin, son. Now lets get you some liquor and a nice hooker.

3/11, 27%

T3B 1. She Told Me So 2. Once You’ve Had the Best 3. Darlin’ I really enjoyed this album; supplies! Solid 3!

Pretty good overall.

Earthy tones and gut wrenching tunes.

Pretty respectable country album to me. Vocals and vocal harmonies are really good. It's not very creative, and sounds pretty typical for an old sappy country album, but it’s really well made.

One word review: SMOOOOOOOTH

Já já, þokkalegt old school köntrí.

Not for me but much more enjoyable than modern country

Okay for country. Not my normal jam.

Buena voz para un estilo country de las primeras épocas. Para grandes fans de este tipo de música

George Jones is often cited as perhaps the greatest country singer of all time-though you may not know it if your first exposure to him is this album. His performance is solid, but apart from the first and last songs, none of these tracks have the staying power of classics like “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”
