Decent but a little too heavy for me. Great vocals from skin
Could they not find better albums? (I know tens)
3-
Decent rock album
This was decent. 3/5
Not bad, not mind blowingly amazing either.
Totally new band and album to me. For a UK rock band in the '90s, they set themselves from their contemporaries by leaning into heavier alternative rock and metal rather than britpop or shoegaze. Post Orgasmic Chill starts strong with hard-hitting metal influences centered around Skin's vocal performance. This lends well in some part of the album but occasionally comes across as too theatrical or simply lacking a strong hook. There were times where I found myself impressed by Skunk Anansie and others where I was disappointed. Truly a mixed bag that loses steam as it goes on.
Surprisingly good.
Not my bad. Intense rock music
Not as good as their other classic

As big as this band was at their peak, it's kinda crazy how they've mostly fallen into obscurity since. Skin is such a unique figure in 90s alt rock. And as boundary pushing as she was, the music is...kinda just average 90s alt rock? Like, idk, there's just not very much memorable here at all, even though all the songs are of quality.
I liked the heavier ones on it. The slower songs I could pass of. No idea why Secretly is the most popular one off this. Will I listen to again: 25%
Okaish alternative Rock. Didn't like the Metal parts.
Good but not really my thing
This one definitely grew on me.
6/10 - I was fully ready to hate this album but, it grew on me. I liked the Skank Heads and I'm not afraid a bit. The rest of the songs I did not love and it was strange.
This was interesting. I’m probably gonna forget about it in a week
2.7/5 listened 2x
Listened to this while playing A Feast For Odin solo. I won! I didn't go into this with high expectations...so I was kind of pleasantly surprised by this one. The beginning threw me for a loop for a moment...but then the guitars entered. I also enjoyed the lead singer's voice more than I thought I might. Good...not great.
This album swings from meh to wow the whole way through! The more orchestral tracks are clear 4 or 5 star tracks, but the heavier stuff ain't for me (not in general, I love heavy stuff, but just not Skunk Anansie's heavy stuff).
I can't say I was a fan of this at the start, but it did get reasonably good in the middle and towards the end. I liked the vocals when they weren't trying to be edgy with the lyrics. 3/5
I remember Skunk Anansie from the 90's but more so for their first two albums rather than this one which has my wondering why this is in the book when the first two were a lot more important and I think their appeal has worn off a bit by the time this came out. As for the album itself it's good but again I prefer previous albums the music is rocking and Singer Skin's voice is excellent ask she can go from tender whispering to shrieking in seconds.
Certainly an upgrade in terms of sound, vocal performance, production, concept and overall ambition compared to Skunk Anansie's previous LPs. That said, it's not the stylistic 180-degree turn that its Wikipedia page pretends it is either (a dubious take that's probably inspired by the PR blurbs released about this album at the time). The band's very-nineties-albeit-one-of-a-kind alt-rock formula is indeed pretty much the same as before as they go from groove-metal and RATM-adjacent crossover-rock cuts to unabashedly poppier ballads, with a couple of quote-unquote "punk' moments here and there--counterbalanced by lush string sections for good measure. No matter what (sub)genre Skunk Anansie tackle, 90% of the emotion is conveyed through singer Skin's soulful vocals anyway--here reaching unarguable peaks in the standout tracks, such as rock ballad "Lately" and its equally slow-paced follow-up track "Secretly". The rest is decidedly hit-or-miss, and there again, the music style that's chosen doesn't matter as much as the songwriting and/or execution. Hits include the Tool-inspired opener "Charlie Big Potato", the hectic and topically heavy "On My Hotel TV" or lively rocker "The Skank Heads". Misses include "Tracy's Flaw", a composition that doesn't make a shred of sense, or the two duds unfortunately ending the album on a bum note--one penultimate punk cut that completely fails to dynamize the LP's last run, so awkward it sounds, plus one extra ballad, "I'm Not Afraid", which was clearly useless after the other mundane, major-chords-driven slow cuts the band had indulged in during the course of this tracklist. There, for the conclusion of the record, the stylistic left-turns neither rhyme nor reason. As a matter of fact, the album could have ended on "You'll Follow Me Down" without missing anything relevant to say on a musical standpoint. And even there, it was one ballad too many, maybe. In spite of my complaints up there, *Post-Orgasmic Chill* is not so bad overall. There's always been something artificial-sounding to Skunk Anansie's projects--a feature also enhanced by the fact that the band quite sometimes used an outside writer for their music. Yet I would lie if I said the album wasn't enjoyable overall. Is that enough to consider it "essential"? Nope. Its tracklist is still a little too patchy at times, and those particular "alt-rock" shenanigans didn't age so well anyway, to be honest (even if they're ten times less ridiculous than what Evanescence released not long after in a somewhat close genre!). Before enjoying the state described by the album's title, you need genuine excitement first. And if the latter can be found at times inside this LP, it's not the sort of excitement that can send you head over heels into the moon either. 3/5 for the purposes of this list, which translates to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5+3). Number of albums left to review: 131 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 376 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 222 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 281 (including this one).
This is the second album this week that has prominently features the N word and I just about shut it down after the 3rd track here. Then I checked up on the band and realized they are meant to be edgy/shock/punk and also that the singer was black. While I was on their Wikipedia page I noticed a lot of the bands they toured with, and a lot of them were the ones I had thought of while listening. There were some drum bits that reminded me of Rammstein, and other bits of a perfect circle and sevendust. The second half really calmed down into a more chill and understandable record and I'm glad I stuck with it. Favorite track "Lately" 3/5
Had never heard of these guys before. Found the album interesting but just ok.
Move to hear a whole album. What a voice.
a few songs slap
One of the most misleading/interestingly strange band/album name combinations to date. 🦨 There was nothing chill about this album, it is a rocker borderline head banger. I would listen to some of this stuff at the gym. But didn't really find it to be something I would really latch on to. Middle of the road for me...3.0
Not original or great, but it’s ok.The chics voice is the weakest link but she sure puts it out there. The bass line is pretty cool but all the songs sound the same.
thoroughly enjoyable stuff. it's 1990s away from being a 4
I can appreciate her voice and the variety in the songs, but the second song on the album took a star off for me
Unique vocal style makes this a little interesting but the uninspired instrumentals don't do very well to accompany it.
It was okay. Some cool rhythmic heavy parts. Too much wailing and drama.
A good album, I liked Lately and Secretly the most.
Was initially feeling this, but then it feel off pretty hard for me. I'm not sure why exactly, but I wasn't jiving with it. 2.75/5
I’d never heard of this band before, but they have a great name and great album names as well (like this and their earlier album Stoosh). Skunk Anansie have their roots in punk and moved a bit into nu-metal in the 90s: Wikipedia lists the genres here as hard rock and alternative metal, but I think the punk shines through more than anything else. I’ll definitely check out more music from the band. I was pleasantly surprised by this.
There was a lot of potential there but it's just not executed very well
Litt usikker men viba med mye
I must admit I remembered these Skunk Anansie albums being a whole lot better than they are appear to be right now. Of the first three I always considered this the weaker one and the one with Weak on it the best. It has some nice agressive tunes, but not every song is as strong as the opener.
They were well-known for a period, but in retrospect, I cannot find anything unique about their music compared to the time. Some songs are good, and it is a nice listening to but... not more than that.
So truly out of my range of comfort, However truly not a bad album. Just not something I feel qualified to rate.
Ok, another British band from the 80s/90’s that I’ve never heard of. When I eventually quit this project, it will be because one of these albums breaks the camel’s back. Skunk Ansnsie? I guess it’s hard coming up with band names. But Post Orgasmic Chill? WTF, is that supposed to be cute? Or edgy? Or what? Anyway, the music is kind of interesting, props for not sounding like everything else. Unfortunately, the vocals are a bit screechy for my tastes. I dunno, call it a 3.5, but I’m rounding down to 3, cause I can’t see myself listening to this again.
Too long
Reminds me of Muse with the throwbackiness, but more hard rocking.
It's a great sound, Skunk is a great singer, everything is great apart from the songs. Not one of them stands out. Maybe "Lately" but even that's a bit by numbers.
meh? 3/5
This one didn’t do much for me. Rating: 2.8
Leans heavily on other alt rock/metal acts of its era, but this was surprisingly effective. Great singer and dynamic but a bit anonymous sound. Maybe a bit overproduced. Probably won’t return to it.
What I’m surprised by Is not that Skunk Anansie are on this list but they’ve chosen this album over their first two. Songs like ‘Weak’ or ‘Hedonism’ were truly great and innovative and showed off Skin’s vocal range and power in a new and surprising way. By album three we knew what she could do and it was still great but those first two albums, Paranoid & Sunburnt and Stoosh were out of this world. My mark here is more for the choice of album rather than the talent of the band. They were just so Trailblazing and exciting, but the impact was felt much more on the two earlier albums. And dare I say I think the earlier songs were better. This did incite me to go listen to them again though - Weak is ironically such a strong song it’s still in my head a day later.
Quite enjoyed this ! 3*
Surprisingly good.
Another good album - on a decent run at the moment. Wasn't particularly aware of their music other than vaguely recognising the name. First 45 seconds had me thinking that we were getting another grotty 90s dance album, but it changed pretty quickly, definitely for the better. There's a decent range, floating between proper punk through to full on ballad singing, but it fits together really well. 3/5, not far short of a 4 though.
3.75
Aside from the unsettling title, I was not opposed to this in any way. It seemed like an interesting late 90s alternative metal and rock album. Genres which I have a lot of love for. So I figured I would like at least some part of this. I wasn’t really expecting this sound for some reason though. Never did I think I would find an album on this list that sounds inspired by S.C.I.E.N.C.E. era Incubus. I’d dare even say Make Yourself, but technically this came out 7 months before that album. Either way, they still have very similar production styles and feelings. Initially I thought the guitar tone felt very flat. The singer, whose stage name is Skin, sounded like she was actually turned up louder than the lead. I think she very much is the main focus of the music though. She has some pretty dazzling and intense moments here and there. And just like Brandon Boyd, her voice is often the thing leading the band the most. I thought the first three songs were a very solid start, and there are a few songs spread across the album that I enjoy. But too many of these songs border on something closer to pop rock with heavier elements mixed in than alternative metal. And something about the way the band plays just doesn’t fit that sound in my mind. I could be totally wrong though. I’ve read that this was a departure for them, and the heaviness is not to be found on their older albums. So I probably wouldn’t enjoy those all that much. This is a mixed bag for sure. But the highs are definitely high. The lows aren’t horrible, just not what I was looking for. Rating: 5/10
Dope album title. Actual music not so dope
Kinda wtf but also kinda liked it. A few songs I would listen to again and a bunch of variety. Very strange and edgy which I think is what they were going for.
After reading the description for this album and listening to the first song, I thought it was going to be way more metal and heavy than it was. This was a relatively easy listen with plenty of song variation to keep it interesting. My expectations were low coming in which I think helps. There was also some random snippets of Drum and Bass throughout the album which I thought was interesting.
Interesting and engaging departure from what I can usually expect on the 1001 album list. This album is exciting, every twist and turn contains a different section or new sound I wasn't quite ready for. Heavy punk and soul influence, synthesized with some pop elements.
Maybe my least favorite album title so far, but actually a pretty solid album behind it. Some good heavy tracks and some surprisingly strong use of orchestral drama. Great singer. Best song: Lately
Awesome first half
The first time I have heard this band
The first song reminded me equally of Evanessence and Lacuna Coil. Of course we won’t find those bands here on this list. What a unique band, I wonder where they are from! Ah. But of course. I wonder if the queen ever recorded an album? If she did I’m sure it’ll be on this list. They really should have called this “1001 British Albums to listen to before you die (there’s others but it’s mostly brits)”. That’s fair advertising. I did like this band, always a fan of female lead in a rock band. And deserving of this list too, just tough to swallow 20 British albums in a row knowing so many others aren’t on this list
This is the first group I have never heard of. They remind me of Evanesence a bit. Some decent musicianship but not a lot of real catchy songs.
Well, I think the band is accomplishing what they want on each track. Utilizing different styles and influences in the layers of each song. I do think they are somewhat limited by the vocalist, meaning each song is going to more or less sound a bit the same based on her singing style. Not my cup of tea but I think they are trying to do a little more than the average late 90s alt band here, and I think they’re doing a decent job.
I remember not liking one of their videos back in the day. I forgot that they existed until it popped up on this list. Nothing grabbed me.
Hard edges in a good way. Would listen again.
Ok. The band played well, but I didn't vibe too much with the music. Interesting for a metal band to have a female black woman as the main singer.
Decent but sounds a bit dated
okay sound, didn't blow me away.
Favourite song - Cheap honesty
Never heard of this band. Started off not really being my thing but by the end got a little better. Still it's pretty generic sounding at times so it's nothing super special at the end of the day.
"Post Orgasmic Chill" by Skunk Anansie is a bold and expressive album that showcases the band's unique blend of alternative rock and punk sensibilities. Released in 1999, the album features powerful vocals from lead singer Skin, who delivers emotionally charged performances throughout. The album's standout tracks include "Charlie Big Potato," "Secretly," and "Lately," which all highlight the band's dynamic sound and compelling lyrics. Skunk Anansie's ability to mix heavy guitar riffs with melodic hooks is on full display here, creating a sound that is both aggressive and accessible. While "Post Orgasmic Chill" may not have the same commercial success as some of the band's other albums, it remains a strong entry in Skunk Anansie's discography and a testament to their unique sound and style.
I dig it, very angry and not afraid to get into the weeds, not a regular repeat listen but definitely a good record.
Just ok. 3/5
3.3 - A mostly mediocre follow-up to their strong debut "Paranoid and Sunburnt", this record waivers between mindless headbangers and weepy breakup anthems. It's a shame that such a talented band and exceptional singer sound so uninspired -- so much power that's wasted on lines like "you wanna do someone else."
a few good songs, mostly not my taste
Listened, but not close enough to give a fair rating. Am planning on listening again though.
Well this is new territory for me; I've never seen alternative (nu-metal) meet drum and bass with string. Definitely an eclectic mixture that feels very stuffed, but it works out okay on Charlie Big Potato. I dig the energy of On My Hotel Tv. Some interesting vocal production intermixed with some lovely work on the bass. Feels a bit overblown, but I enjoyed the ride. Odd outro tacked on that slips into a tripped out reverse sample + trip-hop beat. Backgrounded this for a lot of the rest of the listen. Certain songs stood out and were more enjoyable than others. I wouldn't say this is something I needed to hear to have a fulfilled life, but it also wasn't bad by any means. There was a pretty wide array of styles on display, but also some strange choices in composition. This is a pretty middle of the pack 3 for me.
Dang, I usually don't care for this slow, grungy style of rock, but this one was a fairly enjoyable listen from start to finish. It didn't all feel the same and it wasn't whiny. The vocals are powerful without being overbearing. The instrumentation has a good variety and doesn't get boring. This is one where I would give it a 4 if you compared it to others in its genre, but it's still just a 3 for me in the grand scheme of The List.
Achei um estilo musical diferente mas finalmente num bom sentido. Faves: we don't need who you think you are e Tracy's Flaw
An album that brings memories. I still like it, but now it seems it's not as solid as I used to think
Opens with a d'n'b beat before crunchy alt metal riffing comes in underneath female vocals. We Don't Know Who You Think You Are has a quite heavy, groovy main riff - I dig it. Secretly goes symphonic with strings and a sweeping, melodic chorus. Cheap Honesty brings back the heavy guitars and it works. Good bass too. The album covers a ton of ground, but for me it's not focused enough to be great.
Interessante Musik. Teils recht hart und psychedelisch.
OK. It was background this morning. Some rough spots but other spots that sounded interesting enough that I might return one day to check it out more carefully.
Better than anticipated
This is not the type of music where I’d expect to hear the n word to much. There’s some weird songs on here but I like the singers voice
New to me. Was interesting at least. Will spin it again
3.5 stars. Starts out as occasionally creative and fun metal/rock with elements of string/orchestra layered in. Singing alternates between something different in a good way, and grating/detracting from the music. Lyrics can be aggressive but not to the point of off-putting. Starting with "Lately", which is more like generic 90's alt rock, it really slows down and gets down to soft rock or almost R&B. Different genre than the beginning of album. Standout for me was "We Don't Need Who You Think You Are" and "The Skank Heads".
Unexpectedly good. Not crazy sick kfc chicken good but more like a double mcchicken
Not bad, just not above a good album for me, not an all-time classic. Another that could grow on me, but I doubt it would get to 5 stars
Nice to see a more diverse voice in the rock world. That said, it was okay. I’ve heard much better, I’ve heard worse. 3
Album 306 of 1001 Skunk Anansie - Post Orgasmic Chill Rating : 3 / 5 "Post Orgasmic Chill is the third studio album by British rock band Skunk Anansie, first released in 1999." That quote is about all I know of this band. See this album classified as Metal/Hard Rock. Have to disagree with that. Is there such a thing as Metal Pop? Don't regret hearing it but probably won't go back.
Didn't know what to expect with this one, but was pleasantly surprised. Like Evanescence, but British. Let your rage out.
bella la voce di skin, ma tutto sommato non mi ha gasato molto
OK, the album grew on me. A rough start, but pretty solid. However, why is this on a list of albums I should listen to before I die? I own at least 100 albums that are better than this one. Nevertheless, she has a great voice. And it definitely fucks the Pixies pretty hard.
Started off really hating it but there were actually some decent songs.
This sounds like a bit of a snapshot of 90s rock, dipping into grunge, alt-rock, britpop and nu-metal on occasion, all of which I like. At no point did I think ‘wow, I really love this tune’, but it’s a solid enough set of songs sung by a frontwoman with a great voice and something to say. 3.5
Very interesting listen kind of surprised I've never heard of this artist
Heard this one before. Last time I listened to it I really liked the sound. It is definitely better played LOUD with headphones on. Standouts: Tracy's Flaw, Good Things Don't Always Come to You, You'll Follow Me Down. 3.5 on a good day.
It’s fun how they see post orgasmic chill
This album started so punk, it was awesome. I have no idea why they changed the 5 in the latter part of the album, it really could have been 5 stars if it kept the form of the first 5 songs. Favorite track was we don't need who you think you are.
3.5
B- Charlie Big Potato 3 On My Hotel T.V. 3 We Don't Need Who You Think You Are 3 Tracy's Flaw 3 The Skank Heads 2 Lately 3 Secretly 4 Good Things Don't Always Come to You 3 Cheap Honesty 4 You'll Follow Me Down 4 And This Is Nothing That I Thought I Had 2 I'm Not Afraid 3 Hearing a punk rocker say the n-word was a shock to the system every time, and my nerves were never cooled by the knowledge their lead singer was black. It was still so shocking every time because the punk rock voice is historically white.
pretty good! cool vocals, especially for the style.
Pretty interesting sound, I liked the singer a lot. The super tight production isn't really my style.
Some enjoyable stuff here. RHCP/Primus/Rage vibes. Had never heard of this album or group before.
The lead is the highlight
I quite enjoyed this in a guilty pleasure sort of way. It's very earnest but also very silly in parts
Alku vähän yllätti amen break samplella, mutta täähän olikin kovaa grungea. Ihme että nimi on täysin tuntematon ja kappaleet.ä
first listen great singer, terrible band
Not my vibes, the vocal is cool thoug.
they had their merits in nineties
Way better than expected. Hard and loud. Play loud - with headphones. Standouts: Charlie Big Potato, On My Hotel T.V., Tracy's Flaw, Good Things Don't Always Come To You, Secretly, Lately, You'll Follow Me Down, I'm Not Afraid 3.5/5
I was quick to chalk this up as another example of the irrefutable British bias in this compellation of albums. However, I will admit that I was caught off-guard with the power and grit in this album. The lead singer, Skin, is an absolute powerhouse and really strives to break gender and color norms in this album. While their intensity shines in the hard rock songs, this album has several lacking "rock ballads" which drags down the rest of the album.
Band and vocals were great but at times if felt like they didn't match up.
Good
I'm pretty convinced that I willed the second half of this album into existence. I really did not like the first few songs at all. They're pretty hard rock and feel really rough around the edges, it was not working for me. But the singer's voice is clearly really good, and I must've thought to myself 10 times that if they just took it down a couple of notches and let her actually sing (instead of the hard rock yelling / Janis Joplin knock-off thing that was going on) that she would shine. And then that exact thing literally happened just how I hoped. The band pulled back the intensity quite a bit after the first few songs, and the singer actually got to show off her voice, which is really quite great. "Lately" and "Secretly" were both really good songs, and a number of other songs on here were similarly restrained in a way that let the singer (whose name apparently is Skin) to stand out. They certainly weren't all winners on this one, and they did go back to the heavier rock a few times later, but I ended up liking this more than expected. This is an album that I have absolutely no desire to listen to again in full, but I found a couple of songs that are really quite good, and I almost definitely would never have stumbled on them if not for this project. Sticking with a 3 rating since a good bit of this didn't work at all for me, but it was worth the listen. Favorite song: Lately Other: Tracy’s Flaw, Secretly, You’ll Follow Me Down, I’m Not Afraid 10/25/23
I liked likely and that’s it
Not being into the heavier, grungier rock albums has been a recurring theme for me so far and it continues here. The female vocals on top of the heavier rock is refreshing and she has a great voice. Overall the album feels very meh to me. The quieter finale "I'm Not Afraid" is the standout for me, it's a nice ending, and I'd like to hear more of it from them. It gives the vocals room to breathe and features a cool guitar solo. Song going on my "1001 Songs" Playlist: I'm Not Afraid Songs Going On My "1001 Albums Savelist" Playlist: I'm Not Afraid
Pretty good, liked more than expected. Heavy feminist rock
I saw this band way back in the mid 90s at the Sheffield Leadmill on the NME tour. I've always liked Skin's versatile voice. The music is suitably hard rocking, but it's all a bit inconsistent with never enough hooks. A low 3 stars.
Can't say I ever heard of this band before. I didn't find this record particularly memorable but it wasn't bad.
I try not to prejudge the albums on the list that I've never heard before. This is one of those albums, and it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Great vocals and some metal vibes in the instrumental department. I can only describe it as somewhat cool. I'll probably not go back and listen to this.
I don’t think I’d buy this album based on its title and the band name. That said, I am very pleasantly surprised about the quality of this album. Just the right amount of sound experimentation. Skid Row or Dee Snyder vibes. Each track gets stronger as the album progresses. A high-3 star.
Expecting more from this.
The opening tracks are pretty awesome and Skin is a legend but as it meanders into rock ballad territory all focus is lost.
Drum and bass and alt rock?!?!
Top
Some songs I loved others were not my thing
Bit like Anastasia
Liked it
Is good but doesn't do much
# 54 : A solid, creative rock/metal album with great vocals.
I found myself enjoying this album much more than I was expecting. I knew very little of the band, and the only one song that was prominently showcased on the Strange Days (1995) soundtrack. Rather enjoyable.
Surprising enjoyable
A rock band with an impressive female singer (those are rare). Not enough for me to be on this list personally but I still think it's solid.
Not the biggest fan but it was alright
Singer is great, music is so so, but not bad.
Not bad.
I didn't hate it..
Yes, okay & interesting but not really captivating for me.
Unaware of this record or group, so I didn't know what to expect. The music blazes off to a solid start, raw, energetic and a powerful singer. The songs were good, but didn't resonate with me enough, though it was an eclectic mix. It feels a little dated and I can't say I would listen multiple more times.
This was a very cool, interesting album. I genuinely loved a lot of the songs, the sound they were going for, and particularly Skin's vocals. But I don't think I love it as an album experience as a whole; It falters too much in the back half and makes it feel relatively bloated. If this was trimmed and tightened just a little it could be so much stronger.
Environment: work Attitude : oh god Review : This is EXTREMELY 1999 rock
Some good riffs on this.
The metal was more bearable than most metal. That's not to say that I liked it but it was bearable
This was a nice surprise, tons of energy and snarky attitude. Alternative metal is an apt descriptor. The lead vocalist Skin separates this band from the rest of the male dominated hard rock/metal bands out there.
I do not like this group. Didn't like em in the 90s, don't like em now. This album was heavier than the last bunch of songs I remember not liking from them. It's.... ok? A bit too bipolar for me. 3/5.
Just ok for me. Some really good sections, and some skips.
Solid anxty heavy rock with great vocals from Skin. There isn't really a stand out track with hooks and its not really a genre I like. Hard to be critical though.
Nice to see a 90s band doing something a bit different to standard Britpop. It must have been successful, too, seeing as Skunk Anansie headlined Glastonbury in 1999, the year of this album's release. I generally quite liked this. It is heavy and tuneful and melodic, and perfectly accompanies Skin's vocal. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Secretly Date listened: 05/06/23
This is not bad. I don’t love the guitar sound - it’s that inorganic electric guitar sound similar to Living Colour - but the songs do have a good energy and I like the vocals. Sort of like if Tina Turner joined Rage Against The Machine. 3 stars.
Reminded me a bit of Evernescence at times
Felt VERY 90s but I did enjoy it. Can't say I'll rush to listen to more of them or listen to this again but I did like it
3.5
Skin seems to be the spiritual successor to Grace Jones - a gritted-teeth vocalist more than willing and armed to f&@$ you up. I enjoyed my introduction to cunt rock (Skin’s words; not mine).
It's super weird and something I certainly wouldn't choose to put on. A couple of decent tracks. Best track: We Don't Need Who You Think You Are
I enjoyed this. It felt like a more straightforward, intense version of Portishead with ethereal vocals over industrial-esque instrumentation. And I'm a sucker for Portishead, so I gravitated toward this as well. With that said, the vocals are absolutely insane which elevated every single song past their already good song structure, with catchy guitar riffs and knowing when to withhold energy and when to go all out. Highlights include Charlie Big Potato, Tracy's Flaw, Secretly, and more. If you like the 90s rock sound, give this a try for sure. Nothing mind-blowing or super innovative, but an enjoyable listen nonetheless.
Was a bit worried at first that this has aged badly, but as it goes it's still good. Nice trip down memory lane. I can suspend my usual niggle of 'what's this doing in the book?' because it's been removed later, correctly. Describing it as metal and hard rock is a bit misleading, as while there's certainly elements of that still hanging around, they were well into their trying to emulate the Manics' pop chart success period, with similar sounding ballads as singles as well. As it goes I've more time for these ones, but maybe because I've heard them less. Kind of wish Skin was still politically active, her righteous anger is very much required in the face of these constant wankers we have now. One of the best voices in hard rock, and always a good read in interviews. Also though I think her head would explode onstage or something. At least now she can just quietly seeth like the rest of us.
Post Orgasmic Chill is the third album by British rock band Skunk Anansie. This album has a harder sound than their previous albums because the band used heavier elements of hard rock and metal. It performed moderately well critically and commercially. I thought this album was wonderful! It was the perfect mix between alternative rock and heavy metal, and the vocals by Skin gave me goosebumps. I'm surprised I have never heard of this album or band before, and will be listening to more from them.
Nothing about this seems like it'll be orgasmic. In fact, that title is downright off-putting. But you know what? It rocks harder than I thought it would. I was expecting some god awful electronic trip-hop crap, and it's not nearly as terrible as that. It's pretty cool. A pleasant surprise actually. I really dig this singer and the heavy rock on some tracks.
I wasn't sure what to expect given the title. It was an interesting listen, not something I'd return to though.
With a band name like Skunk Anansie and an album title like Post Orgasmic Chill, I had no idea what I was in for. British Alt hard rock was not my first guess, but that's what I got. This sounds like a much shittier version of Evanescence or Halestorm (hard rock with a female lead). This music has a few things working against it. The music is perfectly average when compared to 90's hard rock, and the band itself is tight, but their weak spot is the singer. I mean, she calls herself Skin, so that should tell you all you need to know. I found her very pitchy, and all over the place. That, and her lyrics were hard to follow most times, and she threw the N word around a lot as if she was in a hip hop group or some shit. That's just something you never hear in hard rock. You can tell, however, that she was passionate about the topics she was singing about (from what I understood, it largely centered around racism and mysogeny). They also have a tendency to end a song, then for a minute they play either a random unrelated beat track or a random audio sample of a fucking tv advertisement or radio blurb that has nothing to do with anything. It's off putting and weird. Aside from these random eccentricities, this was a fairly average helping of 90's rock today. Not something I would often gravitate to, but not bad in the grand scheme of things. Favourite songs: The Skank Heads, On My Hotel TV, We Don't Need Who You Think You Are, Tracy's Flaw, And This Is Nothing That I Thought I Had, I'm Not Afraid Least favourite songs: Good Things Don't Always Come To You, Secretly, You'll Follow Me Down 3/5
A little ‘harder’ than I usually like, but I was surprisingly into it. Loved the vocals.
First of all, that name is WEIRD. Secondly, this album is decent, if a little forgettable.
British alt hard rock
Album title is misleading because this is not “chill”. Lots of energy across the album. The strong vocals are a standout. Favorites: Tracy’s Flaw; Good Things Don’t Always Come To You. Solid 3/5.
On the first note, my thought was, oh yippee, alt metal... how quickly can I get through this. But I really enjoyed Skin as a vocalist in particular and the band on the whole has great energy. Surprisingly good, soulful stuff, if a bit melodramatic. High 3, not quite a 4. Fave Songs: Lately, Tracy's Flaw, Charlie Big Potato, Cheap Honesty, We Don't Need Who You Think You Are, Secretly, You'll Follow Me Down
"Post Orgasmic Chill" is the third studio album by British rock band Skunk Anansie. It was a departure from their previous two albums of punk and alternative rock into more alternative metal. Oh, no...not alternative metal. We really have to 1999 alternative metal it? Luckily, they do have some songs in other styles. Cool names for the band members: Skin (vocals), Cass (bass), Ace (guitar) and Mark Richardson (drums). The album starts with their first single "Charlie Big Potato." An electronic synth music opening going straight into a metal riff. I immediately think Evanescence. Skin's lyrics are very emotional and dramatic singing about abuse and consequences. Skin's soulfulness stands out in "Tracy's Flaw." Slower (than the previous three alternative metal songs) with an eerie guitar. Tracy will use and abuse. Hey, they go pop with their third single "Lately." This is catchy and poppy. Skin actually singing. Wow! Let's go baroque metal in "Secretly." Strings added. Even more pop than "Lately." Skin showing her strong voice. Their last single released "You'll Follow Me Down" continues the strings and adds an acoustic guitar. Don't follow her, she'll drag you down. The album ends with a ballad "I'm Not Afraid." They're firmly in alternative rock area now. Nice melody and song. I have to admit I had no idea where this album was going. I'm definitely not a late 90's alternative metal fan; that's where this album started but really went more pop and alternative rock midway through. There's no doubt their lead singer, Skin, is dynamic and showcases a strong voice. I can see why they had a lot of commercial success in the UK. I did enjoy the second half of this album.
Surprised me
The voice is the key here. Any other singer and it wouldn’t be so revered. Worth the listen though, definitely.
Guitars were right up my alley, but the rest of the music was ok
fine but not something i'd put on
Interesting listen
Rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.
Nice, strong music that clearly came from the nineties? Yes. But a record to die for? Pull the other one.
Good overall, but it's a kind of music that right now doesn't tell me a whole lot. I probably would have loved It more back in the days. Still, not a bad album
HMMMM
Thai album was really good. Never heard of this band before, but great production and vocals. T3B 1. Cheap Honesty 2. You’ll Follow Me Down 3. I’m Not Afraid
Never heard of the band or album before. Good solid 90’s rock record.
I dig it. It's like if Evanesence had more punk and grit.
At the time, Weak aside, I could take or leave Skunk Anansie. Now, I have a lot of respect for them. Good songs that are more interesting subject wise than the "You can sheeeine" bollocks others in their class were making, a great singer, and some interesting instrumentation, bringing in dance and metal at points. Am I going to put it on heavy rotation? No. Have I re-evaluated a 90s band I should have given more time - definitely.
Not my thing
Haven't heard any SA for decades. A bit harder than I recall. Definitely distinctive.
"Lately" on suosikkibiisini levyltä, "You'll Follow Me Down" myös hyvä.
Some songs were better than other and the vocals were generally good
Damien duff swears by this album while going door to door selling Avon with your da
Preferred first album no melody
There's so much to like here that I'm a little dismayed I don't like it more than I do. This mix of ingredients is very cool and sometimes delivers some powerful moments. But having listened, there is no tune stuck in my head. The best I can give this is a three.
Not entirely convinced by the generic, albeit hard-hitting, alt rock sound. Personally I think British bands tended to wear the alt rock t-shirt a little awkwardly, for the most part. However, although the music may be a little beige, the vocal performance compensates. Skin is a compelling and charismatic frontwoman, and she is good enough to drag the music to a higher level. Decent, no more, no less.
The music is not half bad but the lead singers voice grates on me a lot of the time. Didn’t hate it, but wouldn’t actively choose to listen to it again.
This album was decent, though not really anything too spectacular. My favorite songs are 'Cheap Honesty' and 'You'll Follow Me Down'. Lovers of alternative rock should like this album. Good vocals and a good band. 3/5
Epic songs but not particularly memorable.
Much of it is nu metal if instead of the hip hop component, it was Britpop with a mix of Alanis Morissette. But a lot of songs go soft on the opposite spectrum that sound more akin to folk rock, more common as the album progresses (and more like Morissette). And then there are hardcore songs like "On My Hotel TV" and "And This is Nothing." There's a symphonic effect created by the operatic singer, the strings, and the explosions of noise that remind me of Metallica S&M at times and Radiohead at their most chaotic. I thought most of the songs were pretty good (or at least had something notable), but I thought most of the instrumentation was boring, and I was mostly just impressed by the vocals and the incorporation of the strings. Favorites: On My Hotel TV, We Don't Need, Secretly, Cheap Honesty, And This is Nothing
Rock alternativo.
2.5/5. This is some real subpar late 90s rock. It is really boring.
I'm loving this run of female rock vocalists I'm getting lately. So this is a band I have NEVER heard of. As provocative as the album title is, the music is most certainly not chill in any sense of the word. I am guessing I haven't heard of this band because the woman lead vocalist blew out her vocal chords after one tour of live shows. She wails...and she's angry! I like it, but a full album of this is...a lot. And I'm pretty sure I wouldn't survive a live show of theirs.
I enjoyed more than I was expecting to!
Not sure what compelled Rob to go back and put this in here… it’s dexent
First listen. Definitely sounds like the time it was made which I guess is somewhat nostalgic. Didn’t really enjoy it.
Jotain niin siistiä tuossa laulajan äänessä on. Kaikki biisit ei ollut ihan A-luokkaa jos edes B:täkään, mutta kuitenkin viihdyttävä levy.
Good 90s rock album, but nothing special. 3/5
This group is pretty off the wall but oddly enough I am enjoying this album and definitely will check it out again.
happy memories of seeing them live in the late 90s. Slightly surprised they chose this album rather than Stoosh or Paranoid & Sunburnt which were bigger hits and less nu-metally.
I was fully expecting to hate this, but it was better than I expected. What's interesting is how Skin kind of kick-started UK hip-hop artists such as Stormzy and Dizzee Rascal, even if the genre is different.
Wow this brings me back to high school. Hard to evaluate it objectively. I think it sounds of its era, late 90's, with a sharp edge.
Surprised I hadn't heard of this band due to their political leanings. Seems like a cool concept but didn't wow me in the implementation, still definitely need more black people in metal.
Thought this would be a grueling slog after hearing the first few tracks, but surprisingly this LP manages to exceed expectations by earmarking itself as a time capsule of the late 90s. While not every song goes by without sounding dated, the majority manage to live at the weird intersection of grungy metal and trip-hop that evokes the time period without being unlistenable. The sometimes repetitive song structures and tonal whiplash between tracks are the cherries on top that solidify this LP as the 90s incarnate.
Wild, fantastic rock and roll.
Ive never been convinced that Skunk's combination of pop and rock really work. Its all "half decent"
Did they say the n word
Some really nice heaviness at times There were quite a few moments that made me heavily cringe, especially towards the beginning, but overall it was decent. So I guess a low 3/5
Tja, haat-liefde.
Eerste nummer blijft ontzettend goed. Zo hard mogelijk draaien!
What a supremely strange album. The vocalist sounds like Alanis Morissette doing her best Tina Turner impression and the result is grating. Pair that with a pretty decent nu-metal backing band and you've got a recipe for cognitive dissonance. And just regular dissonance, for that matter. I can't love it. The vocals are too extra. But I can't hate it either. The music is good more often than not. This is case of two opposing vibes earning an album a tepid three-star review.
When this album first came out, it was one of my favorites. But giving it another lesson, it sounds like too many albums and one. Not as enjoyable as it was.
it was fine, maybe need to go back and give it a more thorough listen.
It's alright, can't chill to it though.
Genre: Alternative Rock 3/5 As much as this album may be named Post Orgasmic Chill, there is very little of that kind of respite felt in this project. An industrial, political, almost nu-metal rock album with plenty of passion and raucous energy, and a female lead vocalist that doesn't hold anything back, this was more enjoyable than I was expecting it to be. The vocals were clearly the star here, which makes the stiffness of the arrangements seem even more stiff, as the backing track is consistently trying to keep up with her. The intro tracks, Charlie Big Potato and On My Hotel TV, were two excellent glimpses into what this band could do well, but the rest of the album struggles to match the energy from the beginning. Again, the female lead vocals, performed by Skin, are top-notch, but she belongs in a group that is as passionate as her. Stale arrangements and industrial/electronic breaks that feel out of place are the reasons this album falls semi-flat. It has a few gems, but nothing to warrant anything higher than a 3.
Hmm. An eclectic album for sure. Really loved some of it. Really meh about some of it.
I mean...it was all right I guess? On a personal enjoyment level. I definitely understand why many people could have fallen in love with this album but I didn't. Love the raw anger in the music though. Don't know if you'd exactly classify this as punk or whatnot but it definitely has a pleasing proactive energy. It's just personally not a style I care for. Fave track: On my Hotel TV.
don't know how i felt about this one. was really nervous about it after the second song, but overall found it pretty enjoyable. definitely weird and has consistent themes throughout
Not bad but very of its time
Some interesting things here but not really up my alley. 5/10
A couple of good songs.
The lead vocalist sounds a little too much like Linda Perry from the 4 Non Blondes. Bumped up a notch for the great playlist Spotify fed me after the album ended. I got some great PJ Harvey, Portishead, Hole, and a little band called the Manic Street Preachers. I'm scaling up a notch for the aforementioned lead singer being named Skin. Actual rating is 2.5.
Interesting 90s alt rock. I’m not sure I “get” what was influential or unique about it, but if you like alt rock, it’s worth a listen.
One of those albums that make me wish we were able to give half stars. While Post Orgasmic Chill is far better than most of the albums I have tagged with 3 stars I don't think it is as engaging and memorable as Stoosh or Paranoid & Sunburnt. One reason why I won't argue against its inclusion in this list is how formidable the band and how until listening to this album again I never drew the connection between them and a heck a of a lot of loud/quiet emoesque bands that followed at their heels. I was lucky enough to see Skunk Anansie supporting Garbage on their Australian tour in 1996, just when Stoosh was released. Skin has such a presence as a front woman that she gave Shirley Manson a run for her money that night.
Better than I thought it would be. Some really interesting stuff here
Forgot about this album - surprisingly poignant even for today and a lovely voice - not skunk anansie s best but a good one
Quand un producteur decide de faire des hits avec un band Des tounes correct, production a1, musicien a1, qu’est ce que je peux dire de plus. 3.75.
Not bad
I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it. The lead vocals were powerful and enjoyed the black centric lyrics that are damn near absent from alternative metal. However, I just didn’t find much to this album that was terribly innovative musically especially in 1999
Molto carattere, con passione. Mi diverte. La tipa sa davvero il fatto suo!
According to Wikipedia, this album was a "complete departure" from their earlier work, which was more punk and alternative whereas "Post Orgasmic Chill" had "a new harder sound with elements of hard rock and alternative metal." Someone forgot to tell half of this album about this radical shift. The harder stuff is interesting. The more alternative stuff however doesn't stand out from their contemporaries. Songs that melded the two sounds showed the promise of the new direction, but overall there are too many forgettable tracks. Their lead singer, Skin (because Deborah doesn't sound cool enough for a rock singer?), has definite vocal talent, but is kind of all over the place in her approach. Also interesting was the drum-and-bass intro on the first track and outro on "Good Things Don't Always Come to You." Creating more of a mash-up of alternative metal and drum-and-bass would have been really interesting, but unfortunately they did not explore it beyond these very tacked-on segments. Naming your band after the trickster spider-god Anasi is pretty cool, but adding on skunk to ""make the name nastier" draws a pretty big eye roll and almost loses them a star. And as long as we are looking at their questionable naming conventions, a lot of this album seems distinctly unsuited for "Post Orgasmic" chilling.
For the first 30 seconds, I thought this was going to be a very different album than it turned out to be. I dig the harder rock sometimes veering into punk sounds. Lead vocals are powerful and I like the strings on Secretly. Actually, the parts of the album (Secretly in particular) reminded me of Evanescence. They are similarly melodramatic, they both incorporate hard rock with orchestral elements, and they have powerful lead vocalists....too bad I can't understand any of Skunk Anansie's lyrics. Even reading them, they are gibberish ("skinny kack para, para dutty dykie nigga") so even if I want to scream along, I wouldn't know what to say. The lyrics leave this one at 3 stars but there were some pleasant surprises with this one.
Fav songs: - Tracy's Flaw - The Skank Heads
Not my fave
Couldn't make it through the first few songs... rare for me on this journey.
I usually have a 3 song minimum when trying new albums. I didn't make it here.
ни голос, ни содержание не для меня, спасибо
Good... Not Great.
Es un Evancence de la salada. De lejos no parece tan mal pero a medida que le prestas atención es mansa copia.
I've never heard this group or this record before, and probably for a good reason it was just OK
Eh
I enjoyed some of the slower and calmer songs on this album, but did not enjoy the high energy ones.
Take a pinch of shitty pop metal, add a dash of 311, a sprinkling of Incubus, a soupçon of U2-style pretension, and a dollop of that classic British blandness and what have you got? A lame band who doesn’t belong in this book.
Not my thing
Life's too short to listen to this band again. Their next album took them another 11 years. Let's hope album number 3 takes another 30.
Didn't really like this album, until I got to Lately. I liked it better once they showed some range, but still not that great.
Just about listenable but didn't do anything for me.
I waffle on this. Some of it has a pretty great sound for its time but some of it sounds like generic garage band stuff
I liked some of this but found the rest uninspired
altern. rock, 1999 -> 2
I sold this one, as I liked the predecessors better.
I don’t know how to categorize this exactly, but it doesn’t do it for me
Horrible
Not bad but not memorable in anyway either
Hated this. Overwrought and trying way too hard. This is no Betty Davis.
Not for me, I'm afraid. Never really been a nu-metal fan, but this was just all over the shop stylistically.
Skunk Anansie are decently popular where I'm from and they're a frequent live act. I never really gave them a proper listen, though. Post Orgasmic Chill has a couple of cool moments, mostly at the start, but the songwriting is in most cases either forgettable or corny and it pales in comparison to some of its peers. The hooks are merely acceptable and the super clean mixing leaves a lot to be desired. I do have to give some praise to the vocals and the major themes of the album, which are delivered well. Overall, it's decent, but I doubt I'll come back to it.
I don’t know that the album deserves a 2 but for my preferences, I didn’t care for it. I’ve never enjoyed that 90s alternative post grunge summer rock like stone temple pilots or bush.
not for me
Not as bad as I imagined but still not my cup of tea
Honestly, the album cover is the best part of the album and props to that photographer. For the album itself, the concept of the album is cool, being a more modern British metal album with a powerful voice. I wasn't particularly a fan of her voice, and the album grew more stale the more I listened to it. Glad I listened to it, but not again.
Sadly couldn't get into it. Clearly some cool politically charged writing going on - but it happens to be over quite boring riffs. Instrumentals mean a lot more to be than lyrics unfortunately.
4/10
5/10
Before I hit play I had wondered why I had never heard of this band before, but I found out soon after I hit play.
Not my thing, none of the songs I heard before
Some listenable tracks but disliked most of it
Nei og nei, ikke for mæ. Faktisk helt jævlig til tider.
Better than expected.
I usually really like this genre, but something in a lot of the tracks didn’t really hit for me. Skin has an amazing voice though!
Wasnt feeling it
Nothing wrong with the album, honestly had some solid moments for the stlye/time period. But I have no idea why this was included on the list, the Wikipedia was pretty scarce of details and why this was considered an essential listen.
Not bad necessarily but I just didn't get into it at all.
I don't know why I've never clicked with Skunk Anansie - on paper, I love them. I saw them live in the mid-90s and there's absolutely no doubting Skin is an incredibly talented vocalist and front person. I've never listened to this album and it's more inventive and angular than I expected - it's just all so thin and cold. There's a lot of technical excellence on display, but seemingly no spirit - nothing gripping or compelling. It's just not for me.
I always felt like I like the concept more than the reality with Skunk Anansie. Fair enough that's quite some voice but it's all bit too rawk for my tastes
Tja.
It’s fine. Skin can definitely sing. I’m just bored. Doesn’t offer me anything I haven’t already heard elsewhere. Not a memorable album apart from Skin’s persona as frontwoman.
2+ Stars (6/15)
Never heard of this band before. Kind of like Evanescence meets chase and status
Rating: 5/10 Hmm...I didn't really end up liking this one much. Interesting sonic ideas, cool vocal and lyrical presentation, but I'm not into the songs so much. I liked a few songs like the promising opener Charlie Big Potato, and then a couple like Secretly and You'll Follow Me Down, otherwise it's a bit of a slog where this metal-esque band playing with rock and pop synthesis doesn't fully work for me
Maybe I would think it’s great on another day. I just couldn’t get through it this time.
This album is full of very powerful and anglers moments that give this project a lot of spice to play around with. I would say the lead singer’s vocal range is used in a manner I don’t see very often
Ok
Overall unmemorable
Ok
Fairly generic rock, like a poor man's PJ Harvey with some more metal sounds. Nothing special 2.5*
