Reviews (page 3 of 7)
liked songs: most of them The vocals are the obvious standout, because they're amazing, but I like a lot of what's happening here. The instrumentation (strings!) is great, good songwriting, interesting melodies. My only complaint is that there were 1-2 too many slower songs. 4.25
This skunk don’t stink! I really enjoyed this album. I’d never heard of them before and the lead singer has a hell of a voice.
With the first few chords of the opening track, I thought this was going to be another amped-up Radiohead knock off, like The Mars Volta. But what developed was far more entertaining.
Another happy discovery from the list. 4.5 overall. Some spots just a bit to Evanescence-esque for me.
Quite liked this.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this record. The vocals were great, Skin has a very versatile voice that fits over the variation of instrumentals present here. The guitar riffs were awesome, good drum/bass rhythm section. I really did not expect much from this but it fucking rocks. "On My Hotel TV" was one of my favorites, the stop-start guitar riffs in the verses really pay off around the halfway mark when they're allowed to run freely. On a different note: this album generator site has Hard Rock listed as one of my bottom three genres, which is hilarious because outside of this project I listen to mostly heavy rock music. So hopefully this review helps correct that.
This album really surprised me. What a strong work.
This one took me by surprise, wasn't familiar with this group at all but really enjoyed it.
decent indie/alt-rock, Skin sounding great
Paramore vibes
Cool
This is the direction that postgrunge should have gone - instead we ended up with creed and nickel back. Really interesting songs and lyrics, a really powerful vocalist and some very catchy/standout bars. The ballads were a bit too many and dramatic for my taste. All around an enjoyable listen from a band I hadn't heard of before! 3.5/5 - > 4/5
Honestly awesome. Cool black alt punk and alt metal
I knew Skunk Anansie from their first couple of singles in the mid-nineties but hadn't really followed them. From the moment of being punched in the face by the opening track, though, I was in. Not what I was expecting and a really pleasurable surprise. It felt like Skin had finally got the music behind her that her vocals and attitude deserve. Will be checking out more.
Like The Skank Heads. Heck yes. This is grand.
This massively exceeded my expectations. Some fantastic songwriting and performance - Skin's voice is out of this world at times.
90s fun
Surprise jam! 4/5
This is such a cool but absolutely DATED sound. My guess is that people shit on this because it sounds a lot like early Linkin Park. Those high bass pops! On My Hotel Tv is a fun track. I'm Not Afraid Sounds like a bible camp song, but otherwise a good and fun album that I enjoyed.
A nice album. Would have given it 3.5 if possible. But it's nearer to 4 than 3 ...
Cool trip hoppy nu metal that has some bangers but suffers from some of the stylistic conventions of the time.
Had no hopes, but a very enjoyable album. Kind of reminds me of Alanis. 4*
I kinda dug this. It reminded me of Rage at times, and of Celine Dion at others- which is pretty cool I guess. She can sing, that's for sure. I'm giving it a one-star bump for uniqueness. People should hear this. It's deserving of the list.
I don't know if I will revisit, but this was a decent sound!
Skunk Anansie are a band who could’ve only existed in the ‘90s in the wake of ~post-grunge~ and the rise of alternative radio expanding their demographics beyond college campuses. Similarly, Post Orgasmic Chill is an album that really only could’ve come out in 1999, right as alt-metal and nü metal were quickly rising in popularity, but before the clichés became normalized, and there was still a way to thread the needle between the fruit salad blend of Alternative Music™️’s contrasting definitions. And to be very honest, I really, really, really like this record. As I’ve said, I’m generally a fan of nü metal, and I grew up listening to a lot of alt-metal bands, so even though Skunk Anansie is completely new to me, their sound is pretty nostalgic. I actually find it fascinating that Post Orgasmic Chill is their first venture into metal music, because it does come naturally to their sound and aesthetic. They’re a technically capable band, not only because Skin has an incredible voice, but because Cass and Ace are insanely precise on the bass and guitar respectively. Sure, this aesthetic is very of its time, but for its time, Skunk Anansie are doing it a lot of justice. The first 3 tracks set up a really clear, hard edge to them, and while it’s not Cannibal Corpse, it’s heavier than a lot of radio metal was at the time when I compare it to, say, Evanescence. I think the rest of the record is a bit more punk-influenced, almost ending up in Rage Against the Machine territory, but I would still classify this as metal when it is being heavy. But what really elevates this record for me is how willing they are to venture beyond this style of alt-metal. There’s one side of that coin where they go literally more indie/post-grunge, like on “Lately,” which is my favorite song on the record. They’re great in this style, and honestly I’m shocked that this didn’t cross the pond. (From what I understand, and what auto-played after, this does seem closer to their original sound, so it makes sense why they’re good at it. Still, I love it, and plan to check it out.) The thing that’s really interesting, though, is how frequently they seem to be open to using strings on here. Sure, Skin’s vocal range was made for orchestral arrangements, but that doesn’t mean a song like “Secretly” or “You’ll Follow Me Down” is any less powerful, especially when on the surface it would feel out of place. But that’s the thing about this record– nothing here sounds out of place. Everything Skunk Anansie do, they do well. I may not be the biggest fan of a couple songs, like “Tracy’s Flaw” or “Good Things…,” but that’s more personal preference, not the fault of the band themselves. Skunk Anansie remind me a lot of Living Colour. I hate this comparison superficially, but I do think it’s a fair one to make. Ignore lyrical topics [which are similar, and a positive I love about both bands] and funk-metal flourishes [which they both do incredibly well]. To me, the real similarity actually lies in how both bands are able to blend in vogue sounds and styles of their respective eras to create something that is a high-water mark of their scene that somehow got dismissed over time. I think a large part of that is because Skunk Anansie seem to be victims of being Isle landlocked, but I also feel like being of your time and yet uniquely yourself seems to be a problem for some bands, freezing them in amber even though they didn’t fit in with their peers who were allowed to grow. Overall, I really loved this record, and really appreciated that this list gave me the chance to check out this band who I had never heard of and seem to generally enjoy, even beyond this record. Is it essential, is it the best music of this era, is it going to change my life? No to all of the above. But I personally like this vibe and this style of music, so, purely on a personal level, this was a good find for me.
WHY DOES NOBODY TALK ABOUT THIS AS A FORMATIVE ROCK BAND OF THE 90s OH RIGHT RACISM
sick
good shit
I'm off to see them live in 2 months so this is a welcome sight and sound. Boy I can't wait! I prefer their first 2 albums but mustn't grumble. Anything by them packs a punch- so much energy and those vocals.......
February 14, 2025 HL: “Secretly”, "On My Hotel TV", "And This is Nothing That I Thought I Had, "The Skank Heads" Album name and cover made me think this was going to be downtempo trip hop Tempted to give it 5 stars just for showing a different side of 90s British rock than all the others. In fact I'd bump it up to 4, despite the nu-metal influences generally not being my thing.
it’s pretty much standard alternative metal for that era. the first half of the album goes hard… very hard. the second half, not so much. i would call the second half more “radio friendly”. but what sets this band apart from other bands of the genre is that the singer is a black female, and let me tell you, she is a certifiable badass. i’ll just say that i wouldn’t want to get on her bad side, because she can express rage like few others i have ever heard. all in all, it seems as if i might need to take a deeper dive into this band. solid effort.
Lead singer has great vocals
Really like the vocalist. Will keep this band on my radar. Favorite track(s): Charlie Big Potato, Lately, hotel tv, skank heads, secretly Will I revisit?: high priority Current rating: 8/10
I liked it. Nice fusion. This came out right as I was a young lad forming my first memories and one song sounded eerily familiar I wonder if I heard it back then and was remembering. Maybe. Maybe not
Pretty sick honestly, the vox get a liiiittttleee grating sometimes, but the songwriting is solid.
8/10 Favorite Tracks: Charlie Big Potato, Lately, Secretly, Tracy’s Flaw, I’m Not Afraid Least Favorite Tracks: And This Is Nothing I Thought I Had, On My Hotel TV
Ja was vet
4/5. This one was pretty cool, not too sure what I was expecting based on the album name but glad it turned out much differently than I was expecting. A heavy rock, sometimes electronic, and even R&B, album with an awesome vocalist. Love the heavier songs than the slower ones but it's got good genre diversity throughout which keeps you invested. Best Song: Charlie Big Potato, Secretly, Cheap Honesty
What a fucking voice 🔥 Weirdly I'd heard of Skin, but never of Skunk Anansie. So I didn't know she was in a band Really enjoyed the guitar! Very catchy songs, and I liked the heavier ones. Bonus points for the lyrics "cunty bitch" 4 ⭐️
Stellar voice, the band is so solidly produced and sounds so good, the shift of song tones from one to another is so effortless, the 30 second outro of electronic techno here and there are so refreshing and awesome little pallet cleaners. Really great stuff. Will be listening to again.
Maybe it's just because my expectations were set really low, but I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. It's not great by any sense of the word, but there's some really good metal energy. Good for a metal deep dive.
Loved this one. I happened upon their remake of Search & Destroy years ago and LOVED IT. Never listened to anything else they did and really enjoyed it
First time hearing. Quite solid. Great vocals. Would like to hear more from them. Nice discovery.
01) Charlie Big Potato - 8,5 02) On My Hotel T.V. - 7,0 03) We Don't Need Who You Think You Are - 7,0 04) Tracy's Flaw - 7,5 05) The Skank Heads - 7,5 06) Lately - 8,5 07) Secretly - 10,0 08) Good Things Don't Always Come to You - 8,0 09) Cheap Honesty - 8,0 10) You'll Follow Me Down - 8,5 11) And This Is Nothing That I Thought I Had - 7,0 12) I'm Not Afraid - 8,5 TOTAL: 8,00 (80/100) Current ranking: 142/402 I prefer "Stoosh" but this one isn't bad either. "Secretly" is one of my favorite songs from the nineties, along with "Hedonism" and "Brazen", which is why I'm especially fond of this band. My closeted gay ass was drooling over the "Secretly" video and those precious few scenes of male love.
Love that this is self-titled "Clit rock".. power to the ladies who rock!
Excellent vocals and energy, some of the tracks are really good!
I enjoyed this so so much. Her vocal range is astonishing and the songs are massive. I love it. I also love the drum n bass that creeps in throughout. Very unusual at the time to have those crossovers.
Tykkäsin. Kivan erilainen mielenkiintosia lyriikoita ja melodioita. Yees.
Cool album
What a blast!
hmm definitely a choice, would i reach for it again? probably not that's not to say it's bad, I do have a few tracks I would listen to again: Cheap Honesty, Lately Would listen to this band again if it pops up
I'd never heard them before! Badass!
maybe the height of sharp-edged alternative...reminds me sonically of late Oxbow, in that there's a crunchy brittleness to the guitars thrust up by warm basstones...it feels like a soft slap to the face, quite the vehicle for Skin's mix of hard and honeyed vocals...a tasty, well-rounded desert
Mg, me robé un par.
It was cool
Qué recuerdos!!! Me guardo "Charlie Big Potato", "Lately" y "Secretly".
This was surprisingly good. I was a little nervous with all the comparisons to Evanescence, one of the cheesiest, radio rock bands of all time. But this has actual grit. Other than a female singer, there is no comparison. The slower songs felt a little out of place and kind of meandered a bit. But other than that, this really rocked.
4.25
Great mixture of genres
Wow, I wish I had heard of this band sooner. The mix of electronic music and metal on this album is some of the most inspired and well conceived I've heard from its era. The singing is incredibly powerful and engaging too. I will definitely be returning to this one 👍
My brother has this album. I hadn't heard it in a long time. It's better than I remembered. Skin has a great voice!
Skin is a brilliant singer. By coincidence I had a little revival of Skunk Anansies music a couple of weeks ago when I discovered an acoustic record on Spotify. An underrated 90s band in my opinion.
Wow, this singer is great! Not at all what I expected, a really good listen that has a ton of hard energy to it. 4 stars
I love 'Charlie Big Potato', it's one of the best songs of Skunk Anansie. Important britpop/grunge crossover album.
Ok so this album tricked me... The first 3 songs i did not like, at all... But once you are past those.... man this album slaps. Shame that the first 3 songs are misleading.
Deserves a second listen but the female lead does a great job at being dynamic and emotional.
I had never heard this before and I found it very good.
3.5 stars. Was good will listen again
honestly feels like a lost and underrated stone-cold rock classic to me. skin is ofc an absolutely magnetic central presence but the band that supports her is also incredible,,particularly love the huge bass tone, and man idk what to tell u the songs absolutely rule. lots of ass kicked while never losing an intimate and personal-feeling edge, and when they stretch out for the more open and ballad-y songs the effect is just pure emotional magic tbh. i am in a very Music-Receptive mood rn and im glad i got to lay in bed throwing this on to get my daily album done and just being totally enraptured, barely moving except for the occasional semi-voluntary Shaking Of My Legs. i first knew this band from the sucker punch soundtrack so ofc i was going to like them. pretty funny choice for day 69 but would have been funnier as day 70
Great album super glad that I discovered
An extra star, just for being featured on the Cruel Intentions soundtrack
wow finally something interesting. nice vocals. a little punky
4/5
I've listened to Skunk Anansie before, but only their first two albums I think. This one holds up well though, and is maybe a little more interesting due to the genre mixing going on throughout it. I love the intensity of Skins vocals and direct lyrics. The music keeps up as well - a lot of the sounds on here seem to have influenced many bands to follow in the early 2000s. Well deserving of it's place on the list, and a lot more interesting than many of the 90s picks on here (looking at you, Incubus)
Pretty good. Superb vocals wit some great production, made for a great listen. Would recommend. Best - Lately, Secretly, Good Things Don't Come To You, and You'll Follow Me Down Worst - no bad songs 3.50-3.75/5
Frábært albúm, frábær hljómsveit.
Not as chill as I was expecting. Pretty angry, actually. Certainly has a point of view. I liked it.
At last I get a kick ass heavy rock band that I never heard of. Great vocals
It's a damn shame I didn't hear this sooner. This is some good stuff that really took me by surprise.
Started off strong but fell off in the last half. 3.5
I went from a 3 to a 4 with this album and if I gave it a few more listens I'd probably be at a 5. But I'm just going to stop there because Lately is one of the best damn songs I've heard lately (and I've heard alot of good ones). Passionate and creative with some great song writing.
Rating: 7.5/10 Really cool sound from this band, a nice combination of hard rock/metal, electronic, and funk. The guitar and bass tone are phenomenal and the singer is fantastic throughout. The faster paced songs are all great, but some of the slower songs paled in comparison. Favorite songs: Charlie Big Potato, On My Hotel Tv, We Don't Need Who You Think You Are, The Skank Heads, Lately, And This Is Nothing I Though I Had, I'm Not Afraid. Worst song: Good Things Don't Always Come To You.
Not a promising start but it got better. Like a lot better. 8/10 maybe even

I’m not familiar with this artist or album, but based on the description of it, I’m definitely curious as to how I’ll feel about this. This album was a very pleasant surprise. The very first song on the album reminded me of The Prodigy, which I really liked. Musically, this album was really great. The sound was varied, and the band never relied on one element to create their sound. However, musically, the string arrangements were far and away my favorite part of this album. “Lately,” “Secretly,” and “You’ll Follow Me Down” were the best songs on this album in my opinion. As much as I enjoyed the softer and more melodic songs, the songs that were more straightforward hard rock were fantastic too. Skin’s vocals were consistently great throughout the album, but this band really knows how to put together some great musical arrangements. In my opinion, the late nineties and early aughts were a generally crappy time for rock music. The radio airwaves in the states were full of bands who all sounded incredibly similar, but I would have loved to hear something like this when it came out. My biggest complaint with this album is that a lot of the songs felt too long, even the ones with the shorter run times. However, this is still a great album, and I really enjoyed listening to it.
While I've heard of Skunk Anansie, I can't say I had any idea about what their music sounded like, but this started out way heavier than I expected. Tons of energy, aggressive and angry vocals backed by riffs out of the hard rock handbook. Songs later on into the track listing, that ventured a little closer into ballad territory, gave me more standard 90s rock vibes, but with an undeniable edge. Probably a 3.5, but meh, I'll be nice.
What a pull!! This is what I wanted off this list. Some relatively obscure and unique project. I love the energy of it and the powerful vocalist. I guess this is what much of 2000's pop-metal is trying to be.
I really liked it. Something I wasn’t used to and unique. I listened to them for the first time with their Army of Me version and it was stunning.
Whoaaaaaaa -- this is way more awesome than I thought it was going to be and I really dug it! Stand out tracks for me: - Charlie Big Potato - Lately - Secretly - Cheap Honesty I will definitely be going back to listen to this more!
A really interesting hard rock combination of Evanescence, Fishbone, and Massive Attack with some lyrical inspiration taken from Public Enemy, but more personal. I liked this album far more than I thought I would.
I had passed on listening to this in the past as Skunk Anansie was described as hard rock but they are so much more than that!

It's a really good album, with plenty of great songs. I like how they're not afraid to go really big with it at times, with driving guitars and drums, orchestral surges, great big power vocals... they also have plenty of softer moments with sweeter vocals. Some of the music is sublime, notably on tracks like Secretly or You'll Follow Me Down. It's slightly surprising that this album of theirs would make the list as there's none of their big hits in here, but this one does play well as a whole album experience.
I have never heard of this band before, so I had no idea what to expect, but what a fun album. Kind of trip hop, kind of nu metal, kind of soul. Even though I enjoyed this album and I am glad I discovered it, it does seem like a weird pick for this list. High 4
Really good. Sounds like Kelly Clarkson sometimes
OUMPF!
I've never listened to skunk anansie and I'm not sure how, always been aware of them. The singer is great, she has a voice that you'd initially more associate with soul but she can push it when needed for the music in a way most singers couldn't. Combined with the 90s rock music makes the sound really unique. The best songs were the punky ones, really liked the skank heads in particular. I don't think there are enough standout tracks for a 5 but still really good.
I've never listened to Skunk Anansie - I think the name put me off. I presumed they were part of an early low-fi movement; was quite surprised at their sound. "Modern rock". I really enjoyed the guitar throughout. I appreciate that the singer and the lyrics generally drive this band, but the guitar work was notable, especially on e.g. Lately and And This Is Nothing That I Thought I Had. We Don't Need Who You Think You Are was my favourite track. Skin has a very dynamic voice, which can be a bit tiring over the 50 minute album length.
Never given skunk anansie a proper listen..... This was pretty good, quite eclectic with some quite heavy bits, but also some electronic stuff too. All without the one song I know! 3.5
I don't mind this more chilled and experimental Skunk Ananse. Would have likely have been 5 stars if it was Paranoid and Sunburnt.
It feels somehow like Evanescence combined with some Nine Inch Nails and Massive Attack at times. I don't know how to describe it really. But I enjoyed it a lot!
This was different than anything I’ve ever heard, and I enjoyed it
Never heard of them before, but thats what I like about the generator, there's always something new around the corner. Interesting mix, amazing vocals and bass lines. Not quite a 5, but have added the album to my favorites. Fav songs We don't need who you are and I'm not afraid
Infectious. Rage Againsty. Metally. Angelic voicing shifts instantly to thrash. I have never heard any of this before and feel like I have been shortshrifted and want to blame someone for my own shortsightedness. I want to be a skankhead. And throw my hotel tv out the window and watch with those guys in the album cover as it shatters below.
I knew of this band but hadn’t heard them. I probably avoided them because I didn’t like their name. That is a petty reason to avoid them and, it turns out, my loss because this record is great. I was talking to Nikole and she said that their previous two albums are even better. I really like Skin’s voice. There were moments when she reminded me of Alanis Morisette without the annoying affectations.
Wow. Memory is a funny thing. When this got served up, I was vaguely familiar with the name and even had a feeling I liked the band, but my mind was a blank. As the album played, I remembered so much of it, and somehow it was like hearing it for the first time. But I played this album a good amount when it came out (where the hell did my CD get to?), and somehow this band totally fell off my radar. Skin (vocals) is a monster — in all the best ways. Yes, there are moments when perhaps backing off a smidge might have been the better move, but who the hell am I to tell her what to do. She's a force. Thank god. The band is equally fierce. I love this.
I have never heard of them before this. I will for sure revisit them.
I feel like I've not really listened to Skunk Anansie as much as I should given I'm a big fan of female fronted rock; Halestorm, In This Moment, Dead Sara, Pretty Reckless, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Joan Jett, Heart, Interrupters, the list goes on and on, and I've been aware of Skunk Anansie here and there, but Post Orgasmic Chill was a really good listen and compels me to add them to my rotation a bit more, certainly their hard rock stuff anyway. Skin is an iconic vocalist, I also knew that from general awareness, but her voice is the star of this show. It's effortlessly passionate, raw, angry, determined, and memorable. The music itself is pretty standard late 90s/early 2000s stuff, a little hint of nu-metal sneaking in, and nothing particularly remarkable, but it's heavy and supports the voice properly. Tracy's Flaw is a brilliant song, I really liked Cheap Honesty a lot too, some of it just blends into background listening without leaving a mark but most songs have something that leaps out and grabs you for another listen. A strong and happily surprising 4.
I liked the more metal focused songs. Overall I was a fan but this leaned more on the side of just an ok album for me.
First impression from the first song (Charlie Big Potato): love it. Never heard of these guys but the singer’s voice goes so well with the hard rock background, both to contract and complement. Also love Tracy’s Flaw and Lately. I really like the overall vibe. Tempted to give it 5, but it doesn’t quite reach that level for me.
Kick ass vocals and rythmn section. Is heavy, is good!!
This album was a pleasant surprise because I had zero expectations going in. I do think the first half of the album was stronger than the second half, but still a solid 4.6/5
Enérgico y vibrante.
So weird. It scratched an itch for so many other modern rock/post-grunge bands that I doubt I'll ever see on this list for reasons unknown, but...why this album and not any other? This is discount Lacuna Coil.
Very interesting! Not quite metal or punk or some other obvious category of rock, but with a peculiar edge heading that way, they call it "alternative rock" and I get it. Not used to hearing women fronting bands like this, let alone a Black woman, so that's really cool. British too apparently, I wouldn't have guessed. Really like the progression of some of these songs though, seemingly calm but then exploding with anger. Very cool album, bumping to four stars for the strength of the opener. Favorite tracks: Charlie Big Potato, We Don't Need Who You Think You Are, Secretly, And This is Nothing. Album art: The band hanging out in a hotel room or something, lead vocalist staring at us from her chair in the foreground. Nothing crazy here, but I like it. A bit foreboding, as it should be. 4/5
This was initially pretty bad but after listening with headphones and in the car it's not a terrible album! I actually liked a lot of the songs.
Liked the album. The lead singer has an incredible voice.
4/25/24. Never heard of this band and came into this blind, and did it grab my attention quickly! Has that 90s alt-metal sound, but incredible vocals and in-your-face, almost taboo lyrics that go for anti-racism anti-prejudice. Enjoyed this one.
As a whole, this album wasn’t a big hit. I really like some aspects of the sound, but others not as much. Rounding up to a 4.
When you get an album titled "Post Orgasmic Chill" (still not sure what that name came from) from a group you've never heard of, it's hard to anticipate what you're expecting. What I really got was passion-fueled vocals with a hard-hitting rock sound and an overall satisfying and refreshing experience. Everything just flows together nicely and even slows down and gets intimate at times. A pleasant surprise!
Wenn die Laune nach heftiger Musik ist
I don't really recall much about Skunk Anansie except for the name. So I guess it was good to hear this with fresh ears and no expectations. The album comes out of the gates strong and leans into the electronica side and gets very balladly by the end maybe like a big night out. Anyway certainly deserves some more time. Faves: On My Hotel Tv, I'm Not Afraid
Seems weird to pick this over "Paranoid & Sunburnt" or "Stoosh"? I re-listened to both of them as part of this play through, and I guess this one has some injected drum & bass in places, but otherwise follows the same formula. Eh, it's fine. Preferred the more revved up tracks to the slowed down ones on this album compared to the other two, but maybe that's just familiarity.... Fave track - "We Don't Need Who You Think You Are"
Not a bad album if you don't find the singer's voice unpleasant.
post orgasmic chill was COOL. skunk anansie has such a different sound than many others. metal and punk and hard rock; skunk anansie can go hard, but the softer numbers, like "tracy's flaw" or "you'll follow me down," reveal surprising vulnerability. the lead vocalist is a big part why this album works so well, but don't get me wrong, a lot is still going right for this album. for example, her voice isn't pristine on "on my hotel tv," but its grittiness adds to the intensity. badass. this album was unexpected but enjoyed regardless. a well deserved 4.
I actually dug this quite a bit. It has similarities to alternative, punk, and metal rock genres that are popular in the United States, and yet, the configuration that Skunk Anansie achieves here is pretty much unlike anything that is popular here. This leads the album to sound slightly familiar, but also rather unique. No two songs on the album are alike, either, which just further lends to the diversity of sound that can be found on this album. Skin, the vocalist for Skunk Anansie, has an incredibly versatile voice. She's skilled at singing fast, slow, high, and low. I'm such a sucker for women of rock, and so while this band was new to me, I was ultimately right at home with this album. I struggled with deciding where to rank this album, as it is probably around a 3.5 for me. I ultimately decided to lean in the direction of a 4, as I believe this album is deserving of more than the 2.9 average score that it has.
This album surprised me, I didn’t think I was going to like after the first song. However, it turned out to be a really good album. It’s just simply great music to me. Plus Skin was singing her tail off. Pleasantly surprised!.
It's interesting that this is the SA album on the list (there might be others, I hope so), not as strong as Paranoid & Sunburnt but all that means is it's 4 stars instead of 5, one of the best bands you can see live too.
I had never heard of this band before now, and I was really missing out. This album rocks. I didn’t think the second half was quite as good as the first. Favorite songs were Charlie Big Potato, On My Hotel Tv, Lately, and And This Is Nothing That I Though I’d Have
There’s some great performances on here, a different but very cool band
i was expecting a boring hard rock album, only to be immediately shocked by those vocals! omg! finding out that this band was fronted by a black woman changed my opinion immediately.. you rarely get to hear a black female vocalist singing about racism in this type of music. some of the songs felt more like your average late nineties alt-metal, but i found that the melodies here were quite interesting and i loved the occasional use of a choir or orchestra. really cool stuff. 7.5/10, fav tracks: on my hotel tv, secretly
At first I thought this album was hard to like, but as it went on I found myself getting more and more into it. Not sure how it happened, but by the end I was thinking about previous songs. Hard to classify, but there was lots of energy and attitude, and I'm glad I was introduced to it.
I like this. Very heavy. A little bit of Portishead, Goldfrapp, some Jaurim vibes in the intersection of heavy rock and ambience. Sometimes close to Screaming Females.
Получил и orgasmic, и chill
Sad I missed this when it came out originally, because I would have loved this as an angsty teen. Now I get to enjoy it as an angst adult. 4/5
Love Skin. Love this album. No idea why it made it to this list other than the author is surprised that a black bald chick could entertain him.
I feel like this album deserves a star for most ironic album title—unless we’re talking about praying mantises. This band has zero chill. Really liked this album and not sure how I missed this band when they were popular. I’m not totally sure what genre they are—nu metal? They’re part metal, part punk, part riotgrrl!, and part Garbage-style post grunge. The album opens with a cinematic “Kashmir”-esque banger and goes pretty hard for most of the tracklist, with the occasional quieter moment, though even those have intense moments. The music mostly reminds me of bands like Chevelle and Deftones, but also groups like Within Temptation, Kidney Thieves, and even 4 Non Blondes at times. The lyrics lean heavily sociopolitical, which was a nice change from a lot of the frivolous albums I’ve been getting lately. I’m a big fan of female-fronted rock bands, and Skin’s one of the best vocalists I’ve heard. Her range in both style and literal vocal range are impressive. At times she sounds a bit like Tina Turner at her more rock moments. She’s also got the passion and emotion of Janis Joplin. The swagger of Grace Jones. The vocal maneuverability of an Annie Lennox or Sharon den Adel. And the anger of the best punk has to offer. The album has a lot of tracks and starts to feel a little weighed down toward the end, but still a solid 4/5.
Pleasant surprise this one. I was vaguely aware of skunk anansie but never knew what they were really up to. Will check more of them later
Weirdly had never heard a skunk anansie album before, despite thinking Skin is great. This was a good slice of late 90s rock.
First off, love the title even if there isn’t much chill about this album. Second, this was a great mix of more hardcore and more mainstream rock of the 90s and it was a fun time the whole way through. Secretly and we don’t need who you think you are were my favs.
Sounds like peak 90s. It's kind of brilliant. It's growing on me. The vocals are impressive. How have I never heard this?
Good.
I felt neither chill nor post-orgasmic at any point and my first listen kind of felt like this was on the list just to see if we’re paying attention, but I thought maybe it was just the LA traffic bumming me out and gave it another shot. I’m glad I did! I still disagree with the album title though. False advertising.
Zanimljivo
Maybe it's just my era but this hit the spot
A surprisingly rocker of an album. The lead singer (Anansie?) can really belt out the tunes, and seems to be surrounded by a tight musical ensemble. Frankly, I'm amazed these folks didn't get a whole lot more airplay.
I’m obviously not listening to nearly enough Skunk Anansie. I don’t care as much for the sound when they go full hard rock, the worst example being “On My Hotel TV”, but the rest of the album works incredibly well. That Skin is just one of those vocalists you could listen to all day doesn’t hurt either.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Good vocalist, engaging music.
Wow what a listen. Did not think I’d like it at all in the beginning. Then was surprised by the variety and light touches
Never heard of the band or album before so had no idea what to expect but I loved it.
they refer to themselves as clit rock which is dope. I think that dude from spiderverse would like this band
I was not expecting to like this one as much as I did. This kind of music is definitely better with a female vocalist.
I've slept on Skunk Anansie a bit, I knew I liked some of their famous songs but don't think I've listened to a full album of theirs before. Enjoyed it, I should explore them more.
always great
Surprisingly good rock/alternative rock album by this British band. Musically it's varied and shows a lot of different energy, so it never gets boring. I love Skin's voice too. Overall a good album.
- Some of the vocals are weird but this album rips - Really enjoyable sound that I would listen to again
- really enjoyed this one - awesome punk/hardcore start - love the anger and aggression - album transitioned into quieter love songs that really showed off her voice - damn I thought it would transition back to hard stuff but no
This album is hard to categorize. Little alt-rock, little orchestral, little electronic. It was a fun listen.
Near perfect album!
Pretty good, like the punk attitude..
Fuckin sick
not available on YouTube music, only full length YouTube video good album favorite track: \"Secretly\"
This album isn’t bad, but it is largely forgettable. While it has good tracks n such, I could not retain much upon first listen. This album still has its moments though. However, while still having these good cuts and moments I don’t think I will be revisiting this.
niin radio rokki musiikkia JA NIIN HYVÄÄ?? oih naikkosen ääni. kalju pate, kalju pateriina... en kuullutkaan bändistä ennen ja yllätti kyllä mukavasti mukavanlaisesti. ysäri poppijumppaa mutta tehty oikein. clit-rock, amalgam of hevy metalli and black feminist rage...crazy agenda...postmodern new-wave klitorisrokki... mahtavaa. en kyllä orgasmoinut ennen kuuntelua enkä chillaillut albumin aikana lately
Uiteindelijk 4 sterren.
I knew the album before this one, but only 2 songs off of this one. I like it. The other record was more grunge like. This is leaning towards the pop side of nu metal like Incubus and Alien Ant Farm, but with a much better singer. Favorite song: Tracy's Flaw
I’ve been putting listening to this one off because I was worried it wouldn’t be for me, but I’m so glad I was wrong. Definitely a fan of this! The vocals are so powerful and it’s just a lot of fun.
A real solid album. Probably my favorite yet. I loved the female vocals with this style of music. Every song sounded different. Would relisten to the entire album over. 4.5 stars
Awesome from start to finish. Absolute cracking album. By fuck, Skin has some pipes!
Lyrics don't inspire me but the feeling is great
This album was somewhat hit-and-miss. Some of the songs feature a cool combination of an authentic haunting sound with traditional hard rock elements. Others are pretty generic R&B or soft rock.
4 sterren.
A lot of differing sounds on each tracks, but overall this was actually pretty pleasant to listen to.
7,50/10
A different kind of 90s punk, which feels rarer than one might imagine.
Enjoyable noise saw them when they were a support act, much better than the main act. Underatted for sure
Great voice, great band, never seemed to achieve the recognition they deserved. I prefer the earlier less heavy sound but still enjoyed this.
Yet another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex When this album came out I was working at Blockbuster Video and the promo was on a constant loop. I quite liked Skunk Anansie at the time, but I never bought the album because it reminded me too much of shift work. Which was a shame, as I've really enjoyed listening to it today! It still deserves to be in the 1001 list. 4.5
Kicks off with some etheral Indian music, drops into hard DnB, right into some shredding guitars. All within the first minute. Skunk's voice does take a it adjusting to and it's not my normal style - very screamy but it just works. More hard rock than the classic punk tunes I know and prefer them for and as such not totally my flavour, kind of re-defines hard rock though. 4
Wow, shocked! I thought I was going to HATE this album from the name to the cover art, but I loved it. Skin's voice is amazing and I'm digging more into their discography. What a cool sounding band.
Found myself quite enjoying some songs. Angry music +1
I don't think I've ever heard of these ladies before, but apparently they made a pretty good album in 1999. Good vocals, varied songwriting, solid instrumentation. The occasional funk influences were a nice touch as well. Not a masterpiece by any stretch, but I certainly enjoyed it.
Didn't think I'd like this as much as I did
Different and interesting, I will listen to them again
A pretty cool album of authentic rock. Genre blending, the production is flawless, vocals strong and some great guitar work.
Refreshingly good combination of Energy-filled rock riffs and still great singing
I really got into this - Skin is so badass and the arrangements were really cool in a way that I didn't expect. I remember the more mainstream stuff as being cool and all but this was way more interesting.
Never heard of this band but am pretty impressed. Really good album. Gonna check out more of their stuff.
Rock. Metal.
Pretty good.
This is angry Skin, really angry. And if you are looking for post orgasmic chill this is perhaps not the album for that moment. But if you want to picked up and shaken around, yeh, this is due you.
Skin’s voice is really really good. Really cool album.
Really glad I didn’t give up after the opening track. Powerful vocals, lots of energy. Will definitely be re-listening and checking out more of their discography.
I definitely like this album more now than I did back in the day. Now I am from the age of dj’s playing from an extensive cd collection in regular bars. The bars I frequented back then were of the alternative scene variety and the dj’s on average were huge fans of this kind of music and very into playing the non hits. I knew a lot more of this album than just Lately and Secretly. Like most of the nineties album a throwback to a simpler time in my life. Secretly is my favourite on this album.
4/5 I couldn't wrap my head around this album. It was very choppy in terms of styles. It got racial and i don't know what to think about that cause i didn't understand all the lyrics. She can sing though. I definitely enjoyed her voice, the music and once again female voices are a major plus to me.
Singer is quite skilled.
Great album Band sounds like a mix of Pixies, Foo Fighters, & Poison Excellent sound. Sounds like classic hard rock/metal mixed with ballad rock/hair metal Overall composition sounds great with tight instrument sounds with a hint of punk & emo at times
Another one whose rating I'm sure won't have faired well off first-track impressions. Also another one that has a lot to give if you let it settle in for a couple of tracks. Need to think of a term for these albums, have something about a troll at the bridge where riches abound if you get past him and to the other side. I'll get back to you.
Not what I was expecting, although I'm not quite sure what I was expecting. A solid, creative rock/metal album, the vocals are great
Really cool, angry female lead vocals, switches through multiple styles quickly, trippy, dark, some tasteful string sections, some quieter songs that don't do much, overall very unique, will come back
Loved this
You know, I don't think I've listened to this album for nearly twenty years. Stoosh is such a good album that any time I want to hear Skin belting something out with her - let's be fair now - absolutely incredible pipes, I'll go straight to that. That's not to say that this isn't a good album. It is a good album. But as I listen to it, I hear some little production issues that put me off a little. Skin sounds like she's in a room just slightly too small for her. There's some late 90s compression going on too, where the recording doesn't do justice to the material. It feels flatter than it should be, and that's a shame. Because Skin's voice is able to be beautiful, fragile and indeed angelic in the quiet moments. And like a furious angel, she can tear the flesh from your bones with it during the loud parts. But there's not enough to difference in this recording to capture that, which is almost a crime.
Skunk Anansie dabble with nu-metal. But better than that sounds.
Didn't know much about the band before, but really I liked this album. It mixes all the music genres that were popular in the 90s in a way that doesn't feel forced or pretentious.
A stunning mix of harshness and delicacy. One of the few places that I'll allow the drop-D bass tuning. Skin is like no one else.
I enjoyed this more than I expected too. Some quite varied track, and vocals. pretty decent.
Sehr coole Atmosphäre und Klangkulisse. Insbesondere die experimentelleren Sounds!
This goes hard
Malo me podsjecaju na manje hc mars voltu.
This is the first Skunk Anansie album I've heard (I listened to a couple of songs when I was about 14 and it wasn't really my vibe at the time) and I enjoyed this a lot. The music was a lot more varied than I expected and Skin is a powerhouse of a vocalist
Boringggg
Tyylilleen uskollinen, tiukka ja kova. Levyn nimikin loistava!
Nice voice. Lively going on aggressive
Toimii meikälle vaikka aika on purassut soundipuolel. Hieno energia tässä on! 4/5
Cool, calm, collected chaos is the best way to describe this. I’d never heard of this band before but walked away a fan. Loved the entire vibe of this one.
fun album, not really my genre but still had some neat, enjoyable parts, 7/10
might be too much but idk .kinda liked it.
Interesting beats. Good sound. My head is banging. Good when you give it some time, and the title makes sense cause it isn't quite orgasmic. 4
Chilled and Orgasmic.
duck done good
okay, this album is so cool
First time listen. Kinda enjoyed it.
7/10 I don’t care too much for this style but the vocal performance was very good
7/10. Kinda cool
Well to start with ... gotta love the album title. When "Charlie Big Potato" started, I was not a fan. But by 60 seconds in, the deep driving base (reminiscent of NIN) broke in and made for a fun sound. Hated the 2nd track -"On My Hotel TV". Junk. Was getting concerned. But then the album got its sound, its flow, its personality. "Tracy's Flaw" started nice and slow, and then built and built and BUILT. "I'll come running. I'll come running back to you" ... Huge voice. Huge power. Goosebumps. And then in launched into "The Skank Heads". Not sure there are more hard, clean, driving songs than this one. "Lately" is a great arrangement with solid drums and 80's sounding guitar wailing. "Secretly" had the most plays on Spotify. Was OK, but did IMO did not warrant that top position. All in all, a SOLID album. Added to playlist.
The slower cuts from the four-piece were hit or miss; More the former, but lacking a cohesive application of sounds and effects. The faster songs were carried by the energy, and I found their punches far more jarring than expected. Some of that is unfamiliarity, I'm sure, but I'm absolutely ready to go through Skunk Anansie's discography in full and on a proper stereo system.
Think it’s the first time I’ve ever listened to a whole album of their material. I found this a good listen.
Cool album. Pink style before Pink hitbit big.
Never heard of this album. It was decent. The singer has some pipes for sure. Nothing moved me too much though.
Gear: 64 Audio Duo Artwork: 🏨🏖️📸 Production (25th Anniversary Expanded Edition): 🔊🫠👍 Music: 🎙️🎸💪 Rating: 🥴🥴🥴/5
Really cool album. Love her voice with the nasty riffs. The guitar in this album is really cool.
This was an album I'd never heard before, but I'm glad this list brought to my attention. Elements of punk, hard rock, metal and more converge with strong vocals.
I'm way, way more chill post nut. This broad has some anger but I like it. My neighbor loves evanescence and this reminds me a lot of that. Unsure if I will ever break this out again.
fine I guess? 3/5
Fun
Pre Listen: Another bunch I've not heard anything from. I can't name a single album from '99 I even like now that I think about it. The artist name, album name and album cover don't fill me with confidence. Unfavorable expectations. Notable Tracks: Charlie Big Potato - Gave me whiplash. Went from what I imagine The Beatles sounds like to Non-Beatles Fans, into Ultrakill, into Heavy Metal, then into Evanescence. Opinion wheel is spinning faster than a pulsar. After finishing the album, I think this one was my favorite. Lately - Fuck I know this song. I don't know where, how, or when I came to know it, but I recognize it. Must've been a long time ago, the memory feels I'm Not Afraid - Least favorite song. This band isn't at it's best with slow songs. This sounds like weak emo country music. It's not awful though, not even bad, just meh. Post Listen: Ah, it's British. I'm starting to understand why people in a lot of reviews call the albums on this project British Propaganda. This album wasn't horrible, but I am starting to struggle grappling with the exclusion of certain universal all-star albums in favor of....this. The vocalist was really great, she has a solid voice. The lyrics on the other hand were mostly pretty silly, but didn't matter very much if you listened for just the sound. The guitar got boring midway through, every other instrument was pretty solid though throughout. First album where my favorite song was the 1st, least favorite song the last, and everything in-between was just alright. 3/5
Never listened to this band but this was pretty interesting.
This was a fun album. Like Evanescence with substance. Got repetitive but I wasn’t expecting “Lately” to basically be a Wallflowers song. The drums are basically the same vibe.
I like it at times, maybe like half the songs could be removed.
Not a band I'm that familiar with, but a little suprised this was the album that made the list I need to give this a few more listens, but sounds good so far - I rarely say that about the daily suggestions!
Charlie Big Potato, bad song name. Good Song. On My Hotel TV, one of the worst songs I have ever heard. Had some Interesting parts, especially in Lately and Secretly. The vocals are great but I feel it's just missing something.
So very 90's, but not in a bad way. Incredible vocalist.
6/10… angry rock / 90s indie / *1999
I liked a couple of their songs, but some of the language definitely puts me off. Great lead vocalist Reminiscent of Halestorm at times
I thought this album had some moments, but overall I thought it was a little bland. The beginning of the album was definitely better, and towards the end the songs got slower and not as interesting. I feel like this band has potential, and I like the singers voice, but overall it was just meh.
Not terrible.
A lot of it sounds very quintessential 90s, but overall kinda kooky and eclectic. I'm definitely here for it.
More enjoyable at some times than others, but overall I was happy to have tried it out even if none of the songs ended up on my playlist.
*shrug* I liked it okay.
Cela peut s’écouter
If I didn't know any better, I would have pegged them as a cover band at some bar where there was a $5 cover to get in. They were fine but sounded like they picked a bunch of songs from various genres they like for a set. Inconsistent sound - I like the singer's voice but not the metal influenced songs. Sounds like their earlier albums were more punk oriented so I would have rather heard that. I really see no reason this band is on this list (along with a bunch of other meh sounding bands).
There are some moments here and the energy and passion is there, but this is firmly not up my alley and I have a wide range of tastes. This is another example of slightly British bias in this list, and a reminder of how nuts it is that a band like Weezer isn’t represented here.
Rv
Понравились on my hotel tv, lately и you’ll follow me down.
I enjoyed this one - it’s from someone I otherwise have never heard of and wouldn’t have known about.
not bad
The nineties called. It wants this back
It was OK, actually it made made go back and listen to a few tracks from stoosh and paranoid and sunburnt.
This was very cool - I liked it a lot more than I expected and had a bunch of songs I would revisit. It’s definitely of its era, but still a cool sound that I could see myself coming back to. Top Songs: Charlie Big Potato, Lately, Secretly, I’m Not Afraid
Cool girl 90s alternative sound
Does everything right but not as well as it could be. Loved the intensity from the drums and the overall funkiness, and the vocals were cool at times. Tho I can’t lie at times it gets very bland
Twas alright, nothing more, nothing less
Only really like Weak by this band, which is a great song. This is a bit of a mixed bag, some good high energy songs that rock but the slower songs really don’t work.
I’ve never listened to one of their albums before, and this sounded exactly what I thought one of their albums would. Bit too shouty (which seems odd given she’s got a good voice), generally not doing much interesting musically other than an occasional meaty riff and pretty bland songwriting. Well done me, now let’s get back to not listening to them again.
Has some nasty guitar and bass lines, great vocals. Weirdly smooth while being hardcore, which gives it somewhat of a teflon quality where it sort of enjoyably slips by. This is good but does not quite grab me. The head speaks louder than the heart here
I have to be honest I was a bit worried by the whole 'nu metal' tag that I saw on here but 3 songs in and it's not that bad. I would say it's more hard rock than metal, but what are we going to do dance about architecture next. A few more songs in and it's still not hit 'metal' for me yet but still not that bad. This is not something that I would seek out or listen to again but also not so bad that I would turn it off if it came up in a mix.
5/10: of all the albums on this list, this sure is one of them. There were some good bits particularly at the start but the back end of this really dragged for me. Best song: On My Hotel TV
Not my thing, but I see its value. I’m feeling generous.
Not so orgasmic 🦨
I felt like that I could like this album but nothing really stood out for me. I wonder if listening to it 3 times would make me totally sick of it but I might be enjoying it after 10?
pretty much not for me except I really liked the last song?
By all accounts, this should be my jam. But it’s missing a good hook in like, all their songs.
This is an incredibly eclectic mix of genres that mostly comes together really well. A bit hard rock and alt metal, a nod towards psychedelic rock in the intro, and some electronica influenced beats throughout. The only thing I don’t really get on with is her singing; I just don’t really like the dramatic, poppy style of singing with long held notes and vocalizations. It works in a few places, and I like it on the more aggressive songs, but some of the slower and softer moments just sound like corny 90s soft rock. Overall, I am happy to have heard this, but I doubt I’ll return.
I liked it it hit super hard! It works better when it’s not like an angry annoying white guy
