2.5 - some cool sounds but also some weird songs
Non
ok lets see what's going on got a sitar-esque (is it actually a sitar?) opening. hmm. this is not my vibe. angsty and from the 90s, but not the same flavor of "90s angst" as like linkin park. actually i'd say this is more angsty? lots of n-words which i'm generally not a fan of in my music. also not a fan of digitized narrators in my music. probably give it a 2/5 cause i don't want to think about why to justify a 1. thanks for the music but no thanks.
They actually put an interesting diverse band from 90s Britain on here for once so I was briefly excited, but unfortunately the music does nothing for me.
I do not understand how this album got 4 and 5 star reviews from other listeners. They must be wrong. It's not me right, right?!?
Niet mijn ding. Het enige wat ik kan beschrijven is dat ik het lelijk vind… 2 sterren want 1 voelt te heftig
Huh? Very unexceptuonal
All over the place.
Not for me
low on chill, this one. really did not enjoy.
2.5 - A later redacted (no longer on list, to make space) album (50:50, 13 tracks, third album1999) Alternative Rock, Alt Metal (Britrock, clit-rock (black female rock) Skunk Anansie are a British rock band; Skin (Debroah vocals, guitar), Cass (Richard bass, guitar), Ace (Martin guitar) and Mark Richardson (drums). Band name from Akan folk tales Album was fine – glad I listened to it, mixed feelings if it should be included in the 1001. I struggled with 3 or 2 but didn’t want to ‘reward’ an album that probably shouldn’t have been on the list in the first place. I DO wish they redacted out more pre-1998 (this seems to be the cut off point) albums to make room and left the majority of the albums which have been cut. This album probably isn’t one of the 1001 but it was a sound that was very popular in the late 90’s early 2000s. In Living Colour (not female) and Garbage and Evanescence come to mind. Angry female melodic ‘post-punk’ mixed with metal and Alt Rock. For this reason I think it does belong (or at least a couple representatives of the genre, best described clit-rock, as for me this is a musical journey to explore the development of sounds over time and how sounds influences newer sounds and music evolves. From that perspective an influential album) Honestly if I would have stumbled into this group in 1999 I might have got into them as I liked a lot of other Britrock (Bloc Party, etc.) at the time in this genre and I’m good with clit-rock too – but I drifted to a 2 as I just don’t see me revisiting this again and that’s my delineation for 2 and 3. It’s a good album for a 2, so many of the two are worse. Really wish there was the ½ button on stars. Apparently they departed from a heavier punk sound on their first two album (never listened to anything by them) to a more melodic melancholic sound, considered by critics as significant growth. After P. O. C. they took an 8-year hiatus. Recently celebrated their 25th year anniversary. Post Orgasmic Chill track listing *singles 1. *"Charlie Big Potato" 5:32 2. "On My Hotel T.V." 3:34 3. "We Don't Need Who You Think You Are" 4:21 4. "Tracy's Flaw" 4:30 5. "The Skank Heads" 3:11 6. *"Lately" 3:53 7. *"Secretly" 4:45 8. "Good Things Don't Always Come to You" 5:25 9. "Cheap Honesty" 3:47 10. *"You'll Follow Me Down" 4:01 11. "And This Is Nothing That I Thought I Had" 3:04 12. "I'm Not Afraid" 4:48 13. "Post Orgasmic Sleep" (Japan bonus track)5:17
Here’s another obscure British group that I never heard before. This is a hard rock/heavy metal band with a female lead singer - I can’t think of any others, although this genre is way outside of my area of expertise. It’s nice that the band uses some orchestral arrangements on some tracks, but none of these songs are memorable for me.
Ok, listenable but not one for repeats.
It sounds like it’s trying really hard to be edgy. I think if I bought this CD at the time I would have been disappointed.
I have no idea what to even judge this by. It wants to be hard rock in the vein of maybe RATM or System of a Down with hard sounds and strong messaging but then it scales back with some top 40 knockoff Bush or Bush X kinda stuff. its just unpleasant overall.
The worst parts of British electronic music mixed with Evanescence level rock music. Lead singer was great but this music was not for me at all
This didn't age particularly well in my opinion. I wasn't familiar with it and made it through the album with a little bit of effort. "Lately" is the only song that popped out for me. The screams vocals and frankly (bad?) lyrics didn't do it for me.
Breakbeat intro was cool, rest was meh
Long, but great background for a Saturday morning of housework.
If Soundgarden were fronted by a soulful bald British woman who dropped the N-bomb a lot. Competent, probably relevant, and something that just doesn't do it for me.
Didn't really dig it.
This one grew on me as I listened to it, then outstayed its welcome by going on for too long.
Quite a bit of this felt like it was cut from the same cloth of nu-metal. The last little bit was better, but this was a too little too late situation.
I thought the opening track (Charlie Big Potato) was great (5/5) but nothing else on the album was as good and some was flat out boring (1/5) so not something I will ever play again (maybe just the single) not the best way to start 2026 on here but it could have been worse.
You know when you go to karaoke and there's someone there who really really wants to prove their musical chops? Anyway, this album is not meant for me, it's meant for people who like Dear Evan Hanson. p.s. Why would you close your album with a song that's out of your range?
That was definitively not for me. That early 2000's alt rock sound always sounds kinds of whiny and angsty to me, and compltely turns me away.
I'd never heard of this band before and went in with no idea what to expect. They're cool, but this album is wildly inconsistent. None of the songs really hit with me, but pretty much all of the long slow ballads were misses and there were too many of those for me to really enjoy the album as a whole. I'm always excited to get a woman rock band on this list though, they are not well-represented.
I can't figure this album out at all, and not in a good cool interesting way. Every now and then the vocalist does something cool and I think "oh wow yea they are really the highlight of the band" but it goes away pretty quickly and gets muddied by other songs where the vocals are kind of cringey and almost annoying? A good example is the final two tracks, the second to last is this tension filled punky rock song where she sounds awesome with high intensity shrieks and wails, and then the final song is this super over acted breathy and lyrically weak track. Part of me wonders if they struggled to get the production to match all of the styles and ideas they had in their heads. I know it's hard for bands that do a bunch of different things to get their entire sound to come across on a record. That's why people like Steve Albini were so highly regarded; because he would put so much effort into capturing bands how they sound and not try to overproduce them, it was all about capturing that sound itself. It's a 2/5 for me.
Sonically interesting, but lyrically not my jam. You lose me at calling yourself “clit-rock.” Get over yourself.
It was ok when it leaned more into the hard rock side. It's super polished to the point of being over polished. The balleds really kill the momentum for me and brought this down from a 3 to a 2.
I dunno. Feels too slick, too produced. I can picture being a lesbian in the late 90s doing lesbian stuff to this, and while that actually sounds pretty cool, it's just not really what I'm feeling in my day-to-day reality, nah mean?
not great
Doesn't really land for me. Lots of noisy compilations, singer can't keep it in the lines, just sounds like a lot of the slop of the era that was "so deep" but really just kinda all slopped together.
The drummer from Feeder!
2.4 Can't quite put my finger on why, but gives proper "I'm 14 and this is deep" energy. After the first track I thought it could really go somewhere, I always thought metal lacked some diversity and thought I'd missed something big. Then I read they headlined glasto and thought wtaf how have I missed this. The rest of the album answered my question. It feels so superficial, so surface level. Not upset I completely missed out on this.
Why have I never heard of these guys? Oh … that’s why
the 1st half of the album is shit, the second half is decent 4/10
Grunge är inte min grej.
Ylande. Nej
i thought the high paced songs up front were corny but the slower stuff later on are somehow even cornier
Nothing chill about this ear rape
“Mediocre” -Immortan Joe
Meh. Theoretically it should have been something I liked but did nothing for me.
I was never really a Skunk Anansie fan - I liked Weak - but never listened beyond this . Skin has a very powerful voice with a great range that is by far the most interesting thing on this album. I did not mind the lighter /poppier tracks - but did not care for the heavier industrial/metal tracks which make up the majority of the album.
The amped-up industrial rock schtick is the most dated part of the album. There are some decent, lower-tempo and more melodic tunes: 'Tracy's Flaw', 'Secretly' and 'Lately' among them, which sound less like washed-out American alt-rock, and more like melodic Britpop. 'I'm Not Afraid' gets over the 'decent' hurdle too, but is quite American rock - namely 'Live'. I like Skin - she's enigmatic and she has a cracking voice. But this album is a band out of ideas. 'Hedonism' will forever be their defining contribution to music, but there is nothing of lasting value here. A couple of decent tunes. How it made the list is a mystery.
Not bad, but not my cup of tea. If Metallica, P!nk and Evanescence raised a child, I think Skunk Anansie would be it
I prefer my post orgasmic chill to be a lot more chill.
A minute into the album I thought Skunk Anansie was going to be a knock off version of Evanescence. Unfortunately that wasnt the case, Temu Evanescence would have been more enjoyable. Not a single compelling riff on the entire album and singer that has a decent voice but screeches for most of the album. It felt like they were experimenting with new ideas and sounds but none landed. Like a fart in the wind, this is very forgettable which is fortunate since it's pretty bad.
Don’t hate it. Didn’t love it. But not something I’d ever listen to again. 2.5
6/10 Favourite: Charlie Big Potato Least Favourite: On My Hotel T.V.
Interesting voice but ultimately rather boring and hard to make it through the whole album.
i thought she had a good voice and i enjoyed some of the album more than i thought i would 2.5
This scared me!! I was driving alone in the woods in the pitch black of 6pm and a small animal was crossing the street. I really don’t know what it was. It moved slowly and strangely and looked like it didn’t have any skin. But it was cute and I watched it! And it was also weird and creepy and this music was on and it was so dark and I really could not continue on listening. So maybe this is very good, but just not for the woods in the dark with a little no skin thing on the road
This makes no sense. Nobody cares about these guys. Nobody.
At first I liked this a lot more than I though but towards the end I found myself clicking 'next' to move through the songs to get to the end.
This is a band that had not reached my American ears until now. It fits in that angry nu metal or hard rock genre that is distinctly Y2K, but the black feminist lyrics actually have feeling and meaning behind them. The American analog to this sound would be Evanescence, but with politics and social meaning. Does it work? Not for me. I find it extremely grating or annoying, though maybe that's the point. There is something about the production where the vocals sound too polished, too sterile, disconnected from the rest of the band. It's like a bad Bjork impression. I can envision this all being a lot of fun live, but it falls kind of flat over my headphones. All of it slides off my ears, like so much barrages you that nothing really sinks in. I appreciate the risks involved here, that it is trying to be unique, and it has a lot of interesting choices. But it just doesn't work for me, and I won't seek it out again.
Not something I think I'll come back to.
I'd never heard of this self-described "clit-rock" group, but I always like hearing bands that are huge elsewhere but not well known in the U.S. That's a little surprising to me, because Skunk Anansie would fit in well among various American/Canadian hard-rock acts doing the second-tier festival circuit. You know, the ones with other bands I don't like. While I found some parts of this interesting—and I always like seeing non-white dude-bros in this space—I was ready for Post-Orgasmic Chill (the album, not the phenomenon) to be over before it was.
I'm just not a punk guy, really
I listened to this post orgasm, I don't know if that affected my experience but I didn't care much for it.
Meh hard girl rock, unimpressive
The songs and vocals are pretty epic. The singer has some incredible range and ability to sing softly and beautifully, but also to rage and scream with the best of them. It kind of reminds me of like an Evanescence with a numetal sound. I think I might like their early more punk or alternative stuff because they sound like they can really excel in those genres. Musically they are talented, but this album just didn't really do it for me. I think the hard rock, numetal sound is just something I'm not that into.
Okay, not for me
**An ok album, 27 tracks, a mix of easy listening and no music (just screaming and banging instruments)
I get they are British but that doesn’t mean they belong on the list. The vocals are horrible and the instruments ok at best.
Let me guess they got on here because they are British
This is another one of those albums where musically I really like what they're doing, love the drive, the oomph, sounds great, love it. But do not like Skin's vocals on the softer, quieter parts of the album at all (she's great on the loud and intense parts). Also the lyrics on about 5 of the songs were kinda stupid. And a lot of the songs went in one ear and out the other without doing anything. It's also 50 minutes long. Albums just don't need to be that long if you aren't gonna do anything with the album over that time frame. "Cheap Honesty" is a really solid song.
oh goody-another British group I've never heard of before. and like soooo many others on this this....there's a reason for that. irritating vocals, mediocre sound. meh
not sure what to make of it
2 stars. It wasn't bad, it was well done, polished, but just not my thing. To me it sounded a lot like the rock of that era.
April 6 2026. Easter Monday. It’s a day for celebrating miracles, not enacting them – but here we are. Fifty-five albums down against our daily target: time to roll the rock and let the reviews into the light. Review one of the Easter blitz, Skunk Anansie. Growing up in the early 00s, the idea that head-banging killed brain cells was the urban myth-slash-public health preoccupation for teenagers du jour (masturbating causing blindness being the de facto champion in all other eras). The best bits of this record – Skin controlling the Korn-inspired, Soundgarden inflected nu metal grooves with her reinforced concrete howls – show scant regard for your brain cells, while the worst bits – the ballads, the brief flirtations with RHCP-like funk – are total wank. Equally blinding and stultifying.
Not a fan of this one. All over the place and boring.
Different for sure. Didn't hate it, but didn't really enjoy.
#124/1001. For some reason I get a lot of 90's grunge or post-grunge and rock based stuff in a row. (ok, also 2001). Well, what can I do. I can say that yes, she has a great voice, I remember them from Strange Days, most of the album is boring, next.
I’m glad they got off but I never did. 2/5
Lacking in post-nut clarity.
not something i would have otherwise listened to and difficult to get through. i found myself asking: what is this emotion, exactly? and why are you so screamy?
Day 1. Not sure London underground heavy metal is gonna be my new fave genre. Rough start to this.
Somehow this felt a bit heartless. There were some bits i quite liked though.
didnt do nothing for me
Ніколи цей гурт не викупав.
I don't know what I'm missing that everyone else is finding. Felt forgettable. The messaging was better than the music but even that it felt like a band to see live vs listen to.
It makes sense that this would no longer be on the list. It's fine, but the wikipedia article is bare bone. The sound has that 1990s and 2000s lack of dynamics. They would probably do well as a local bar band.
I had high hopes for this, but it just didn't work for me. Formulaic and not very engaging,
I appreciate being introduced to this band, and the music is raw, aggressive, and full of justice. But not anything I’d look forward to repeated playings of.
Voz impresionante. El bajo desprende potencia en cada canción. Un aura realmente oscura. 4/10
Pretty interesting. Another one of those albums with a few really high-highs, and many low-lows. At its best, there's a real gritty, alternative, powerful edge that's awesome to listen to. At its worst, it's more like Linkin Park, or Alanis Morissette: melodramatic, desperately-hit-radio-single junk. I also feel like Skin is kind of all this band has going for it. Fave songs: - On My Hotel TV - The Skank Heads - And This Is Nothing That I Thought I Had
This album seemed pretty derivative and indistinct, though some of the music was fine, if unremarkable. The singer really can sing, so it's unfortunate there's so much unlistenable screamy shouty stuff going on. It made me skip a bunch of songs. This one leaving me scratching my head as to why it's on the list
A bit wild for my age. Interesting though.
I'm not a melodramatic goth, so this one isn't for me
Boy, does this ever sound like 1999. Shades of Evanesence, angsty nu-metal, on-the-nose lyrics. I wasn't into this vibe 26 years ago and I'm still not today. 2/5
Not really my type of music
Nothing really about it, some cool riffs here and there, but it goes in one ear and out the other. I'm on the last song and i've literally already forgotten everything about this album.
I had zero knowledge of Skunk Anansie before today and at this point I have a mix opinion. This album was not good, at all. The vocal were rough, the music was ok but nothing special, just typical alternative 90s sounds. But after the album ended Spotify played me more of there music and I actually really liked it. The lead singer's voice was more refined on their older stuff oddly enough. She seemed very angry on this album, which I can get behind, but it did not come across in a creative and/or enjoyable way. 3.1/10 84/1001
This one didn't do much for me. Some of the vocals were nice but I didn't particularly enjoy the overall vibe of the album. 2.5/5
Definitely not my vibe, however I definitely enjoyed the slow songs, she has a great voice and I feel like they could definitely showcase that more. Also in their Spotify bio they said they created a new genre called “clit-rock” which is CRAZY lmfao.
Not great
This feels like 1999. Too much like 1999. (Source: was there) Also, quick shout-out to some classic albums from 1999 that were excluded from the book: Keep it Like a Secret - Built to Spill The Roots - Things Fall Apart Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday
A change in sound from their earlier stuff … not sure it was for the better.
I didn't like this at all. It was too different from what I usually listen to.
This is rubbish unfortunately. Not offensive enough for a 1 but I was immediately wishing for it to be over.
Meh
At times this had an almost showtune vibe that I kind of liked. But, most of it was somewhat grating operatic metal that I never got into.
Pretty good sound
This wasn't bad. Absolutely not my favorite rock/metal album. It didn't feel heavy enough for metal but too hard for rock. It was neat. There was nothing to headbang and really no "hooks" tho. I really enjoyed her voice. Liked Songs: "Charlie Big Potato" , "The Skank Heads" , "Lately" , "I'm Not Afraid"
hahaha wüki churz nach de erste 30 sekunde gmeint die präsentiered eus da es banger breakcore album... dem war leider nicht so keis lied mega gnosse, aber au nöd mega schlecht 2 post orgasmic zigis gönni mer aber trotzdem
99/1089 - "Rid of Me" with distortion and slurs.
Not my bag. At all. Heavy, screamy. Could have been…but it just gets to be super grating.
This alternated almost by song whether I liked this or not. I loved the energy, but ultimately this was just too disjointed and inconsistent to give higher than a 2. I wanted to like this more than I did.
This list's British bias has gone way too far: it made me listen to an English Evanescence.
Wasn’t really my thing, I can see how people might enjoy it. Kind of a cool concept, like some fem rage metal/rock music.
This album was kinda all over the place. One or two tracks I dug, but overall not really for me. Interested to see what their other stuff sounds like though. Properly 2.5 stars, but rounding down since I’d likely not revisit it.
Interesting lyrical content and singing is bogged down by over polished and pedestrian metal music.
This is just store brand Lincoln Park. I know why there is a lot of this particular genre on this list- but why this band in particular? Really unspectacular.
Meh
I had completely forgotten about Skunk Anansie. On paper they should be really memorable; there aren't many rock bands fronted by women, people of color, or with a great vocalist so Skin is a bit of a unicorn in that respect. However, none of it felt very memorable. My favorite moments were the more ballady tracks - think I'd rather listen to a Skin solo album with more of that.
2/5
I enjoyed the music. Pity about the lyrics which are puerile at best. 2/5.
this was weird af. not really sure if i like it or not. but that probably means that i don't like it i suppose.
This is one of those albums one of us would own on CD that you'd start to learn front to back in car journeys despite not liking the music that much to begin with. I'm sure if I kept digging I'd find some parts that really vibed with me, but this isn't then and I shan't be doing that. It does remind me a bit of Incubus but where they go heavy often and gets a bit crazier, here there is always a focus on the vocals that doesn't work so well for me. It's fine, some interesting parts but on the whole nothing interested me much. Highlight: And This Is Nothing That I Thought I Had
First song starts of quite strong but the rest of the album falls kinda flat.
I preferred their debut album Paranoid & Sunburnt after enjoying their song "Selling Jesus" in the film STRANGE DAYS. Not a fan of their nu metal phase. Lyrical subject matter seemed a bit eye-rolling as well.
It's not easy to be objective but if you like this aggression, I get it - far more than other in the alt or even approaching nu-metal sounds. I truly and uncompromisingly hate that up-front massively compressed "guitar" sound in any and everything so I can't see how I can even get through this, but her voice definitely soothes things a bit - it's objectively a good contrast (as well as a contrast to many others in similar heavy-spheres). There are some songs later on that are *close* - I really just don't like the presentation and still will never get past this genre/sound overall. Not for me. 4/10 2 stars.
Not for me. Raw and energetic but not pleasing to my ear. on the 2 side of a 2.5
Just could not get into it. I also was surprised that I had never heard mention of this group before today. Still not that good
Meh, not bad but not my thing. I'm stuck between and 2 and 3 for this one, wouldn't relisten
1.5
Some nice instrumentation going on in this album and I can't say that the vocals are bad, but overall it's not quite my kind of vibe.
Sometimes I really wonder about the people making this list.
Album - Post Orgasmic Chill Artist - Skunk Anansie Release - 1999 Heard it before? - N Heard OF it before? - N I couldn't finish it. This specific flavor of heavy stuff doesn't really click with me. Except for Skin. She can belt man. She's got range. 4/10
Was war das? Aber besser als Björk, deswegen 2 Sterne.
I thought I’d enjoy this one but really it ended up all sort of sounding samey and bland. I think I can only give this 2 stars
Including this album seems strange. Skunk Anansie's previous albums were inconsistent, but had a degree of edge about them and at least one or two quality songs. This album is much more consistent, but has smoothed away most of the edge the band had to leave a rather bland selection of songs, albeit sung by someone with a wonderful voice, and nothing anywhere near as good as Weak or Hedonism.
Echt niet mn ding
An interesting ride, but never really figured out what they were going for.
2.5- I liked some of it. Especially the more hardcore songs. Fav songs: Skank heads and in my hotel tv
I just really don't like this style of 90s rock.
This was a bit of a mess. I can't imagine listening to it again, having heard it for the first time at age 50.
The vocals are wonderful but the background just doesn't match. Secretly is more what I expect from the backing track - consistent, and supportive. Most of these tracks sound uninspired, as one rater put it.
what a weird album
At the outset I thought this might be rather a good album. But as it went on it was a pretty stodgy treacly affair. Didn't really care for it.
A few interesting monents but not really my cup of tea. 2 stars
🎧Interesting mish mash of genres but alas, this is not for me. Favorite track: Lately
I can 100% appreciate this being on the list because it’s something completely new to me and also very original! With that said, it couldn’t be further than my preferred sound than it is. It feels like a cheap 90’s Evanescence rip-off that I just don’t need. I don’t want to be too mean with my rating, since I’m happy to have been introduced to this. But I also kinda hate it? Please forgive me.
Noise
Got better around the middle.
Fairly bland. Not much interesting going on here. 2/5 Won’t listen again
This metal-lite/rock wasn't really my thing but I didn't hate it. I like the vocalist, her voice was well-suited for this type of music. 2.25/5
not for me I fear
So much talent and production value. But except for the power I cannot best to enjoy this
I wasn’t into it
Kinda intersting sound. Nu-Metal ish tones and style riffs with soulful R&B sounding vocals. Most the songs didnt do much for me though.
i wanted to like it more.
not my thing musically
I'll go with a 2 here because it's not totally awful. I do not enjoy this though. Another one i can't see why anyone needs to hear too.
Not really up my alley
No thanks.
This is like an entire album of fake sitcom music. I don't like it. I completely agree with the reviewer who said that this is overly polished. This is one genre where you really shouldn't strive for this sort of production and polish. All I'm hearing is generic radio music. Obnoxiously average.
Too try hard.
Holy shit this is bad.
It’s another Foo Fighters situation - where I’d rather the album be worse than it actually is, as at least it’d be more interesting to listen to how bad it is. But it is bad. The ‘heavy sections’ of the truly innovatively named ‘clitrock’ are heavy just for the sake of being heavy, and none of these songs have any driving force behind them. The vocals are talented, that’s for sure, but they’re also not very nice to listen to. I’d normally be more adverse to the ballady songs in the second half when pitched against the more intense first half, but not in this case. The second half could put me to sleep out of boredom, whereas the first half would do similarly before jolting me awake with its stupid, soulless guitar sections. Most songs are annoying. Some songs are bearable. None are any good.
I don't know a great deal about this style of music...this album brings System of a Down to mind as a key reference point. And it doesn't really match up. Sorry
Based on the title and the album art I thought this would be some sort of ambient electronic so I was kinda surprised by what it actually was. I thought I’d like this - female vocalist, rock / metal, British. But it didn’t really hit for me. Liked - lately
Nah. I mean. Nah.
I remember that when I first saw Skunk Anansie on Rage, I felt they were more interesting to watch than they were to listen to. And having just played this album through a couple of times on Youtube, I don’t think my opinion’s changed. There’s something formulaic about these songs - but it’s the wrong formula. It’s as though they’ve lifted things from a variety of sources in both popular music, to put it broadly, & specific styles, such as metal, for instance, but it just sounds so derivative to me & there’s nothing here that thrills me.
Beavis and Butthead would have loved this record.
I'm not sure how this album made it on the list. I'm guessing the author of 1001 is a big fan. Plus it looks like yet another album showing the author's British bias -- even in England, this didn't make much of a splash, and outside of England, it made even less. The album isn't bad, but it doesn't belong here.
I did not like this, but I suppose I can see why some would.
While heavier than Pink I am not sure how it is really different than Pink. Much of the album has a polish that works against its rage. I liked one song but will not listen to the album again.
1.5
a little too strange for me :-)
2,5
Not for me. Too disjointed and noisy. Strong elements, lackluster execution.
While I remember the predecessors to this album and I remember the existence of this one, I don’t remember any of it. So they apparently became a bit more sophisticated in the production and songwriting but also apparently became a bit less memorable. There are some good moments here but they really get lost in the mediocrity of general alternative mush. Skin was a great frontwoman and singer so they were very good when they were good. But I don’t see myself coming back to this again with any urgency. I am glad it reminded me to listen to their first couple of albums again though.
Haven't heard any of this before. I appreciate the energy of the performances and the perspective of the lyrics, but I'm not a huge fan of the songs. "Lately I can't seem to Colour what we've lost"
Bit jarring at times
Should be good. Should be Portishead with real instruments and a kicking beat. Should be able to remember at least one song from a 25 year old album, but I can't (maybe Secretly), and that's because it simply lacks any killer hooks, melodies or other things to make it something worthy of being cherished
I couldn't finish this. The vocals could be decent, but it sounds like she's straining her voice. Eek. I also don't care for this style of music. Pass.
Skunk Anansie has a great track called Selling Jesus that is the first song I ever heard from them back in the late 90's. But every other song of theirs I've heard is always far inferior by comparison. Post Orgasmic Chill definitely fit this pattern. It seems like it's trying to go so many directions; nu-metal, post-grunge, trip-hop, all of the 90's hyphenated styles apparently. But none of it really works for me, so it was a pretty dull and once again disappointing listen.
Maso
A few solid tracks on here I may come back for, and not much more beyond that
Not in my edition of the book! 1999. 2 stars. Average rock band with average songs, partially offset by (mostly) excellent vocals. Not much to like here.
Not my favourite. If it's on the radio I'm skipping it.
This one is a grower...it grows from a pretty low place at the start, but it does become acceptable by the end. Favorite track: I'm Not Afraid
At the start of the record, I found the vocal style incredibly unique for this era of rock, but found the butt-rock instrumentation to be goofy, like a song you would hear close a Michael Bay film. However, once it started escaping that sound and was oddly ballad songs with a hint of rock band, I found myself sorely missing the heavier sound. The album never really settled down, causing it to exhaust its welcome far sooner than what was intended. A sound following the second track's punky delivery and brash lyrics is what would've benefited the album the most, I feel, and twenty minutes shaved off the runtime. To be unique is always welcomed, but you have to go all in, otherwise you just fall into a midpoint of mediocrity and forgeability, destined to be forgotten in an era you assuredly thought you were avoiding.
wasn't really my cup of tea. a mix of screamo/punk, and it reall wasn't my jam. kinda couldn't wait for it to be over. i think there were some glimmars of like, oh this could be cool... but every other song i wanted it to be over as soon as possible.
I dig when the vocalist goes gritty. Not so much when she goes high and pure on her vocals. Never heard of this band before, and not likely to seek them out. They had my untrained ear thinking of The Mars Volta.
New to me, no idea what to expect. Similar to System of. Down but missing that special something.
It was okay, but nothing really stood out to me.
not really my thing, but it reminded me of the 90s in a good way. The voice is great.
Maybe more interesting than I remembered but a little bit too aggressive and stressful for me to enjoy.
Think Hoobastank mixed with Evanescence. That is not a good thing.
Wow do I dislike this. Something about their sound is such a turn off and I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe I just heard it on the wrong day.
I don’t know about y’all, but I was completely taken back by the N-word and hard-R usage in the first few songs. Can’t say I expected to hear it in this genre at all, but it does make sense in the context. I hadn’t ever heard the term ‘clit-rock’ before either, but somehow that also makes sense. I thought there were some really great parts to this album and other parts were forgettable. Either way, it held my attention and it was an interesting band to discover, it just wasn’t a top 1001 album to me.
Not great.
Yeahhhhhh this just didn't click for me at all. Hard pass. 1.5/5
I didn't enjoy this at all. 954 albums in and this comes up and all I can think of is, "Why is this here instead of any Evanescence?" Not that I'm a huge Evanescence fan, but all I could think of was how much I'd rather be listening to them than this. This far in, I want the good stuff. This wasn't it.
Popular 90s rock music, the edges are too clean and sharp. I started thinking this might challenge my expectations but by half way through I tired.
Can remember Skunk Anansie been around but had forgotten about them. Nothing on this album to make me think I’ve missed anything. Some nice riffs but the music is a bit too harsh and shouty for my taste. 2/5 17/4/24
tonic passt nicht so gut zur atmosphäre meines lebens.... kann nicht mehr...... hasse es
This was a total disappointment. I started out really liking the heavy instrumentals, but could never really jive with the singer. As the album went on the singer still was bad and either the instrumentals followed, or I just lost complete interest.
Idk why but this first song and the year it came out makes me think it should be on the Matrix soundtrack. This is some angsty late 90's rock right here. Hits for me sometimes others not so much. There were some songs close to the beginning that I was bopping my head along to, but this one probably won't get listened to again for me.
Heb het afgezegd, vind het niks
Wel redelijk.
I can see why people might like them, and this album in particular. But, it's not for me. Not my taste It's at least a 2
Futuristic movie soundtrack.
The album was interesting. Nothing was recognizable and I had never heard of the band previously. It wasn't bad but I would revisit it. Better than a two but not really a three.
Not really a fan of this style of music but I did enjoy “Cheap Honesty.”
Pretty noisy for me but I’ve heard worse on this list.
Yeah it was alright.
The complete opposite of the album's name. Seemed very appropriate for people who are mad at the world. A lot of screaming and craziness. But, if your're into that kind of thing...
Both he and Genesis all songs sound the same. Not a fan
Discordant. Nothing really made me want to listen again
Not my scene
Hardrock. No termino de encontrarle el ritmo, aunque alguna canción bien.
2,4
Oh man, this is pretty 90’s. I gave is a chance, lead singer Skin? Her voice is strong and if they leaned more into the Nu-Metal direction I thought this was originally going, it may have been ok, like an Evanescence album. Just seemed they couldn’t pick a lane and the album ends up being a bit of a mess overall. The sappy ballad like tunes didn’t do them any favours either. I came out of this pretty confused. 2 stars
Never much got into these guys. Liked the punk bits (On My Hotel TV) more than the overwrought heavy rock. Doesn't do anything for me.
I can see why other people like them, but I'm afraid it just isn't for me.
some heavy riffs i like, though i don’t see myself revisiting this album
2.5
Did not care for all of the album, but there were some good tracks.
This album is very 90s, but had not aged well. I could have done without this one.
chill out love
Nooooooo thanks
Not my thing. The wikipedia article didn't give me anything to glom on to to find something to listen for and/or enjoy on a different level. 2
This started off okay, with a more electronic feel than I expected. Great voice and some good lyrics, but the general feel, once it settles into what seems the band's default, was a bit too rockist and one-dimensional overall.
A great band sound. Just not my type of thing. They don't half make a bloody racket.
This was extremely rough to get through. Rarely have I disagrees this consistently with almost every artistic decision made. Skin is incredibly talented, and I'll leave it at that.
Rock/metal with very passionate female vocals. A bit harsh for my taste
Instrumentals go HARD, but everything else falls flat for me.
Had high hopes that lasted to about the middle of the first song. By the end just annoyed with every song just becoming the same as the last.
Ass
I really wasn't into this mixed up rock sound back in the late 90s, it was just bad, I really don't get why this gets highly rated, because at best it's music with no identity, and at worst, it's about as good as a school band trying to be awesome rockers... and failing miserably. Tracks I liked... well none of them actually. Tracks I hated... On My Hotel TV
Every song starts at 11 and ends there too. The is no range in dynamics or lyrics. The songs are all overbaked and overproduced, forgetting to let the listener grasp on the essence of the song before taking off. However the vocals were excellent and the band sounded tight. I think a 2.
Gar nicht meine Musik...Tempo, Stimme und musikalischer Aufbau macht es für mich super anstrengend, diese Musik zu hören.
Not my style
I'm not a big fan of female vocalists. Maybe that's unfair, but it's my personal taste and I'm going to mark this album down because of that fact. I was also never a big fan of Skunk Anansie, seeing them very much as a nu-metal band with the lead singer being a bit of a Grace Jones clone with a chip on her shoulder. Yes, she's angry about something, but it's just fake anger and it gets boring fast. They were everywhere in the 90s, appearing as a support act for bigger bands and crowding out smaller, upcoming bands. I'd never heard this album before, but it didn't do anything to change my mind about either point. The ballads in the second half are incredibly dull and the backing music is derivative pap. Reluctantly I will give this 2 stars, as it's not quite bad enough for 1.
Not my type of music but remember them from watching MuchMusic!
White elephant Xmas gift... Would like to return to sender
Couldn’t get interested
This one comes out the gates swinging with a funk-metal sound that's very reminiscent of the couple of years either side of the millenium. It has a feeling that it's trying to reach for the 'next-big-thing' status of the new era of music to come. What we end up with is a flimsy set of complain-rock tracks that try to replace hooks with simply beating the listener over the head with thrashy guitars. Very pedestrian, and not something I'll ever listen to again willingly, or think is deserving to be on any list (even a bad one).
Just not for me
Skin has an exceptional voice and the sound is pretty great but there just aren’t the tunes to carry this
Pretty bland 90s indie
Not as chill as I would have hoped
Not my thing. Sounds bland and very 90's.
Får en tvåa bara för att jag är snäll.
Pas trop mon style, je n'ai pas accroché à part une ou deux chansons.
idk
A bit all over the place to me
perdu tout intérêt assez rapidement. 5/10
Hard rock, punket, alternativt, spændende vokal = clitrock
Narj
When they run out of albums to put on the list
This was not as bad as the title of the album and the name of the band seemed to indicate. So, better than anticipated and still not something I believe deserves to be in this book.
Not a fan of this band. At one point in my life I might have been, but not now.
OK album some great songs. Fantastic vocals.
Hardrock. No termino de encontrarle el ritmo, aunque alguna canción bien.
Some interesting moments but couldn't push this rating any higher.
Meh
Now this is an interesting pick, looking forward to digging into this!
Not hard rock/metal. This is just like the earlier 90s 'Punk' refresh. I don't what about this album makes it a 'Must Listen'. The sound is a clone of similar acts from the period while the lyrics try to be edgy, they're edgy in the sense of a Starbucks barista wearing a pin on their apron supporting ______ month and calling themselves an ally. The music is okay, not a must listen. 2/5.
Whiny lyrics. Life isn’t that hard
This feels like a Major Label Album - in all the wrong ways. What do we do with this artist? Make them sound a bit like other artists. 'Going a bit nu metal' really does not work for them, and surprised to see this on the list. Want to like it, but it's even got the big ballad for the radio play track. No.
Instrumentals were cool but I absolutely could not get past the vocals
Pretty embarrassing at times. But it’s even more embarrassing that I enjoyed some of it
Meh, decent enough. One of the best albums of all time? I don't think so.
Not really my thing. Was cool here and there.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Not really, some nice themes but not for me Favourite song: didn’t have one
Luke tells me these were big in the 90s, it's new to me. I found this hard to get through... I wonder if they paved the way for Evanescence.. very similar I thought. I just found it a bit cringe, all hit OTT and "emo" (I know this predates emo). Luke says they still play and attract big crowds of 40 yr olds
Not too sure yet. 2.5
Felt way too long. Nearly Whitney Houston at one point
History will not be kind to the likes of SA and their genre compatriots. One’s not the least surprised this got exed – filed under “on second thought, not worth hearing after all.” This is lame on as many levels as they think it deep, and so typical of overdone, ‘90s self-seriousness. “God licks your face” – really? We’ve all been there, dudes, so best to keep it to yourself. The intensity is skin deep (as fakily high as the vocals), the urgency utterly misplaced, the drama puerile and jejune. All of which sins pale against the deep affront of the least appropriate album name in this whole collection.
Les années 90 confirment petit à petit leur titre de pire décénie.
le pain sur la planche en question
Really bland compressed alt-metal. Trying so hard but they seem scared about actually being heavy with the music - it doesn't match the pissed off, challenging lyrics that occasionally appear. About as edgy as Skin's head. Best Tracks: Charlie Big Potato; On My Hotel TV; The Skank Heads
I can’t figure out if this is a 2 or a 3! The ballads kill me, but the high energy stuff (and the occasional slap bass) is pretty good. 2.5.
Another difficult listen, another album that every song sounded the same
didn’t love it overall but some of the calmer ballads were good
Not what I expected but didn't know what to expect
Musically pretty cool album, but I feel like it gets held back bybthe performance of Skin, at least for me. Sure she can sing, but I don’t really feel the emotion, especially on the heavier moments it all sounds too forced. 4 out of 10
So the name is the only good thing about this album. Vocals are laughable at best and songs are all over the place. Pro-tip: screaming constantly is not singing. This band sounded like a battle of the bands entry at best. 3/10.
Bleh boring
Nää ois parempia, jos ois oikeesti raskaampaa. Todella hyvä laulaja jota on ilo kuunnella, ansaitsee oman tähtensä.
Love the breakbeat intros on some of the tracks. Vocalist gives me Joss Stone vibes Fave track - On My Hotel TV
Was gonna give 1 but solid vocals
eh, i felt they tried to hard. don't seem very rock/punk. maybe I'll just state "too edgy"
Not very chill and not very orgasmic. Mostly generic hard rock
Meh
I was looking forward to this as I had a vague recollection of the band, but it came across as quite contrived and annoying. I hope the next skunk band is better.
Ended up being way softer than I expected. Not necessary my favorite style but a few songs have some interesting elements or melodies going on. 4/10
Weird, in a not good way.
This has 5 stars from Scott Kelly written all over it. It was a lot more nu metal than I had an appetite for.
I love the black female lead punk band, but I sadly found the vocals annoying and hard to listen to. I love metal but this ain’t it.
Hardrock. No termino de encontrarle el ritmo, aunque alguna canción bien.
