Goodness, the songs on this album slide off my ears like teflon. Theoretically, I should really like this album; loud alt rock, black feminist political singer with great voice and significant charisma, tight and punchy band... it hits all the right notes, but I just find it unmemorable. I went back and listened to their first album (which I remember much better) and it is front-loaded with 4 or 5 really killer tracks. I then went down a rabbit-hole of live performance clips, and they are terrific and compelling. But _this_ album is just aggressively mid.... I've been thinking on it, and I blame the producer, Andy Wallace. Andy Wallace is responsible for the sound of hard rock in the 1990s. He was the mixer for most of the biggest and most influential heavy albums of the decade, especially heavy alternative albums. You can't deny his skills. He can craft a huge and compelling sound. By the time he produced this record, he had his methods down pat. And the record sounds perfect; it's a big loud cinemascope sound, with not a note out of place. Maybe _too_ perfect. I am now going to write the most pretentious thing I have written in ~750 reviews on this project. I am going to quote Umberto Eco, from his Paris Review Article 'The Cult of the Imperfect' (https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2019/10/28/the-cult-of-the-imperfect/). He is talking about what makes cult films and cult books, but I suggest that this can also be extended to albums: "In order to transform a work into a cult object, you must be able to take it to pieces, disassemble it, and unhinge it in such a way that only parts of it are remembered, regardless of their original relationship with the whole. .... This means that even a masterpiece, when it comes to haunt the collective memory, can be made ramshackle. But in other cases it becomes a cult object because it is fundamentally, radically ramshackle. ... To give rise to a cult, a film [or album] must already be inherently ramshackle, shaky and disconnected in itself. A perfect film [or album] ... remains imprinted in our memory as a whole, in the form of an idea or a principal emotion; but only a ramshackle film survives in a disjointed series of images and visual high points. It should show not one central idea, but many. It should not reveal a coherent “philosophy of composition,” but it should live on, and by virtue of, its magnificent instability." And this is, I think, my problem with Post Orgasmic Chill. It is a perfect album with a cohesive and coherent philosophy of composition. It is like a smooth, polished sphere of marble with no cracks, faults or fissures that I can grasp, work my fingers into and pry apart. It is stable and it will not break into memorable parts. My youtube research shows I like Skunk Anansie much more as a live band, where they are loud, fast, powerful and charismatic, but not perfect. I wonder if I might have found this album much more compelling if it had been recorded by Steve Albini instead. He understood the power of imperfection. A missed opportunity for a really great album. But I would certainly much more happily listen to this than much of the overly blokey middle-class white-boy aggro metal that pervaded the late 1990s.
I liked the heavier ones on it. The slower songs I could pass of. No idea why Secretly is the most popular one off this. Will I listen to again: 25%

Pretty good. Superb vocals wit some great production, made for a great listen. Would recommend. Best - Lately, Secretly, Good Things Don't Come To You, and You'll Follow Me Down Worst - no bad songs 3.50-3.75/5

Good but not really my thing
I'm not sure how this album made it on the list. I'm guessing the author of 1001 is a big fan. Plus it looks like yet another album showing the author's British bias -- even in England, this didn't make much of a splash, and outside of England, it made even less. The album isn't bad, but it doesn't belong here.

i had never heard of Skunk Anansie but this was a super pleasant surprise: funky, hard edged or beautiful as needed, and just plain cool sonically, with an amazing voice from Skin. will absolutely be checking out more of their discography
Not as chill as I was expecting. Pretty angry, actually. Certainly has a point of view. I liked it.

La segunda parte, sin embargo, se torna bastante monótona, con interpretaciones de guitarra acústica bajo ritmos suaves en el más puro estilo de "baladas noventeras". Mucho mejor que Evanescence, pero claramente una pieza y producto de su época. Algo destacable, es la interpretación vocal.
Felizmente surpreendido com as doses de hard rock e metal, que funcionaram bem demais com o vocal imponente.
At last I get a kick ass heavy rock band that I never heard of. Great vocals
Every time I hear Skunk Anansie on the radio, which is probably more days than not, I think to myself that I need to listen to them more. Well today marks the first time I’ve listened to an album in full. Skin may well have one of the best voices in rock music. She hits the softer and distorted shouty parts as if it was easy. The rest of the music is fantastic. The guitars are what I like to describe as filthy - plenty of distortion and generally simple riffs, but that’s all you need sometimes.
It's a damn shame I didn't hear this sooner. This is some good stuff that really took me by surprise.

Never heard of this group or album so I was really unsure what to expect. Plus metal is not my thing and the title is a little different, but it was much better than expected. I am sure true metal heads hate it but I really enjoyed it. I understand why its on this list, it has screaming and metal sounds but its enjoyable, and there it evokes more than just "I am screaming because I am mad." One top of the emotional depth it focuses on female and black struggles, something metal never does. I started a list of the songs I liked but I really liked all of them. Only criticism is that it started hard and almost the entire second half was a lot slower, maybe more of a mix on the back half. I feel like they would be an awesome live show and I band I am going to investigate more.
I went from a 3 to a 4 with this album and if I gave it a few more listens I'd probably be at a 5. But I'm just going to stop there because Lately is one of the best damn songs I've heard lately (and I've heard alot of good ones). Passionate and creative with some great song writing.
Wow, what a great freaking album. Really dig the lead singer’s voice and the emotion and passion she injects into these songs. It felt very deep and genuine. I had no prior knowledge of this band, which always makes me a little wary, so it was a wonderful surprise to enjoy it so much. Love the blend of rocking out hard and soulful ballads. Gives me all the feels!

Rating: 7.5/10 Really cool sound from this band, a nice combination of hard rock/metal, electronic, and funk. The guitar and bass tone are phenomenal and the singer is fantastic throughout. The faster paced songs are all great, but some of the slower songs paled in comparison. Favorite songs: Charlie Big Potato, On My Hotel Tv, We Don't Need Who You Think You Are, The Skank Heads, Lately, And This Is Nothing I Though I Had, I'm Not Afraid. Worst song: Good Things Don't Always Come To You.
This one definitely grew on me.

6/10 - I was fully ready to hate this album but, it grew on me. I liked the Skank Heads and I'm not afraid a bit. The rest of the songs I did not love and it was strange.

Am ersten Song merkt man schon, was einem erwartet: durchdachte Arrangements mit Tempowechsel, eine charismatische Sängerin mit toller Stimme, Punk und Rock. Hinzu kommen fantastische Balladen, die wirklich zünden. Dennoch wird man insgesamt schon herausgefordert, manchmal ist mir die Stimme zuviel oder die Arrangements zu schwerfällig. Dennoch stark.
finally some good fucking food
Listened to this while playing A Feast For Odin solo. I won! I didn't go into this with high expectations...so I was kind of pleasantly surprised by this one. The beginning threw me for a loop for a moment...but then the guitars entered. I also enjoyed the lead singer's voice more than I thought I might. Good...not great.
While heavier than Pink I am not sure how it is really different than Pink. Much of the album has a polish that works against its rage. I liked one song but will not listen to the album again.

I’m not familiar with this artist or album, but based on the description of it, I’m definitely curious as to how I’ll feel about this. This album was a very pleasant surprise. The very first song on the album reminded me of The Prodigy, which I really liked. Musically, this album was really great. The sound was varied, and the band never relied on one element to create their sound. However, musically, the string arrangements were far and away my favorite part of this album. “Lately,” “Secretly,” and “You’ll Follow Me Down” were the best songs on this album in my opinion. As much as I enjoyed the softer and more melodic songs, the songs that were more straightforward hard rock were fantastic too. Skin’s vocals were consistently great throughout the album, but this band really knows how to put together some great musical arrangements. In my opinion, the late nineties and early aughts were a generally crappy time for rock music. The radio airwaves in the states were full of bands who all sounded incredibly similar, but I would have loved to hear something like this when it came out. My biggest complaint with this album is that a lot of the songs felt too long, even the ones with the shorter run times. However, this is still a great album, and I really enjoyed listening to it.

This album swings from meh to wow the whole way through! The more orchestral tracks are clear 4 or 5 star tracks, but the heavier stuff ain't for me (not in general, I love heavy stuff, but just not Skunk Anansie's heavy stuff).
While I've heard of Skunk Anansie, I can't say I had any idea about what their music sounded like, but this started out way heavier than I expected. Tons of energy, aggressive and angry vocals backed by riffs out of the hard rock handbook. Songs later on into the track listing, that ventured a little closer into ballad territory, gave me more standard 90s rock vibes, but with an undeniable edge. Probably a 3.5, but meh, I'll be nice.
I can't say I was a fan of this at the start, but it did get reasonably good in the middle and towards the end. I liked the vocals when they weren't trying to be edgy with the lyrics. 3/5
I remember Skunk Anansie from the 90's but more so for their first two albums rather than this one which has my wondering why this is in the book when the first two were a lot more important and I think their appeal has worn off a bit by the time this came out. As for the album itself it's good but again I prefer previous albums the music is rocking and Singer Skin's voice is excellent ask she can go from tender whispering to shrieking in seconds.

What a pull!! This is what I wanted off this list. Some relatively obscure and unique project. I love the energy of it and the powerful vocalist. I guess this is what much of 2000's pop-metal is trying to be.
I was looking forward to this album... Skunk Anansie was part of life when I was a student and I saw them live, and liked it them. However I didn't enjoy this album. I was actually really happy when it was over, musically not bad but not genius either, a bit monotonous and I found Skin's vocals (which I used to find interesting, and I like Skin as a person and role model) quite tiring and shouty. They have even thrown in an operatic voice at some point, which was lost on me. This has unfortunately not aged well for me.
Certainly an upgrade in terms of sound, vocal performance, production, concept and overall ambition compared to Skunk Anansie's previous LPs. That said, it's not the stylistic 180-degree turn that its Wikipedia page pretends it is either (a dubious take that's probably inspired by the PR blurbs released about this album at the time). The band's very-nineties-albeit-one-of-a-kind alt-rock formula is indeed pretty much the same as before as they go from groove-metal and RATM-adjacent crossover-rock cuts to unabashedly poppier ballads, with a couple of quote-unquote "punk' moments here and there--counterbalanced by lush string sections for good measure. No matter what (sub)genre Skunk Anansie tackle, 90% of the emotion is conveyed through singer Skin's soulful vocals anyway--here reaching unarguable peaks in the standout tracks, such as rock ballad "Lately" and its equally slow-paced follow-up track "Secretly". The rest is decidedly hit-or-miss, and there again, the music style that's chosen doesn't matter as much as the songwriting and/or execution. Hits include the Tool-inspired opener "Charlie Big Potato", the hectic and topically heavy "On My Hotel TV" or lively rocker "The Skank Heads". Misses include "Tracy's Flaw", a composition that doesn't make a shred of sense, or the two duds unfortunately ending the album on a bum note--one penultimate punk cut that completely fails to dynamize the LP's last run, so awkward it sounds, plus one extra ballad, "I'm Not Afraid", which was clearly useless after the other mundane, major-chords-driven slow cuts the band had indulged in during the course of this tracklist. There, for the conclusion of the record, the stylistic left-turns neither rhyme nor reason. As a matter of fact, the album could have ended on "You'll Follow Me Down" without missing anything relevant to say on a musical standpoint. And even there, it was one ballad too many, maybe. In spite of my complaints up there, *Post-Orgasmic Chill* is not so bad overall. There's always been something artificial-sounding to Skunk Anansie's projects--a feature also enhanced by the fact that the band quite sometimes used an outside writer for their music. Yet I would lie if I said the album wasn't enjoyable overall. Is that enough to consider it "essential"? Nope. Its tracklist is still a little too patchy at times, and those particular "alt-rock" shenanigans didn't age so well anyway, to be honest (even if they're ten times less ridiculous than what Evanescence released not long after in a somewhat close genre!). Before enjoying the state described by the album's title, you need genuine excitement first. And if the latter can be found at times inside this LP, it's not the sort of excitement that can send you head over heels into the moon either. 3/5 for the purposes of this list, which translates to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5+3). Not for me. Too disjointed and noisy. Strong elements, lackluster execution.
While I remember the predecessors to this album and I remember the existence of this one, I don’t remember any of it. So they apparently became a bit more sophisticated in the production and songwriting but also apparently became a bit less memorable. There are some good moments here but they really get lost in the mediocrity of general alternative mush. Skin was a great frontwoman and singer so they were very good when they were good. But I don’t see myself coming back to this again with any urgency. I am glad it reminded me to listen to their first couple of albums again though.
This is the second album this week that has prominently features the N word and I just about shut it down after the 3rd track here. Then I checked up on the band and realized they are meant to be edgy/shock/punk and also that the singer was black. While I was on their Wikipedia page I noticed a lot of the bands they toured with, and a lot of them were the ones I had thought of while listening. There were some drum bits that reminded me of Rammstein, and other bits of a perfect circle and sevendust. The second half really calmed down into a more chill and understandable record and I'm glad I stuck with it. Favorite track "Lately" 3/5

Haven't heard any of this before. I appreciate the energy of the performances and the perspective of the lyrics, but I'm not a huge fan of the songs. "Lately I can't seem to Colour what we've lost"

I really liked it. Something I wasn’t used to and unique. I listened to them for the first time with their Army of Me version and it was stunning.
One of the most misleading/interestingly strange band/album name combinations to date. 🦨 There was nothing chill about this album, it is a rocker borderline head banger. I would listen to some of this stuff at the gym. But didn't really find it to be something I would really latch on to. Middle of the road for me...3.0
Not original or great, but it’s ok.The chics voice is the weakest link but she sure puts it out there. The bass line is pretty cool but all the songs sound the same.

A really interesting hard rock combination of Evanescence, Fishbone, and Massive Attack with some lyrical inspiration taken from Public Enemy, but more personal. I liked this album far more than I thought I would.
Should be good. Should be Portishead with real instruments and a kicking beat. Should be able to remember at least one song from a 25 year old album, but I can't (maybe Secretly), and that's because it simply lacks any killer hooks, melodies or other things to make it something worthy of being cherished
I had passed on listening to this in the past as Skunk Anansie was described as hard rock but they are so much more than that!
I can appreciate her voice and the variety in the songs, but the second song on the album took a star off for me

It was okay. Some cool rhythmic heavy parts. Too much wailing and drama.
This is really good. Skin's vocal range is incredible and is definitely the album's strength but there are some rocking guitar riffs. I also like the squelchy bass. The fact that there are a few quieter songs mixed in with the heavier tracks gives a nice pacing and moment to breathe. It's also very cool to hear an openly queer, black woman singing about some of these lyrical themes in a heavy rock band. I'm not aware of many bands that meet that description nowadays, let alone 1999. Not in the mainstream, anyway. Loved it!

Just weird
Skunk Anansie has a great track called Selling Jesus that is the first song I ever heard from them back in the late 90's. But every other song of theirs I've heard is always far inferior by comparison. Post Orgasmic Chill definitely fit this pattern. It seems like it's trying to go so many directions; nu-metal, post-grunge, trip-hop, all of the 90's hyphenated styles apparently. But none of it really works for me, so it was a pretty dull and once again disappointing listen.
Was initially feeling this, but then it feel off pretty hard for me. I'm not sure why exactly, but I wasn't jiving with it. 2.75/5
I’d never heard of this band before, but they have a great name and great album names as well (like this and their earlier album Stoosh). Skunk Anansie have their roots in punk and moved a bit into nu-metal in the 90s: Wikipedia lists the genres here as hard rock and alternative metal, but I think the punk shines through more than anything else. I’ll definitely check out more music from the band. I was pleasantly surprised by this.

I think I would've been absolutely obsessed with this if I heard it when it came out. This is exactly up my alley. I love the trip-hop and nu-metal influences, and the vocals are gorgeous and intense in equal measure. I love the heavy lyrical themes on racism and feminism too.
grazie, mamma e papà, per avermi fatto ascoltare gli Skunk Anansie durante tutta la mia infanzia, e per avermi portato a vederli in concerto due volte. vi sarò per sempre debitrice. è strano che mi piacciano così tanto, dato che non è solitamente il genere di musica che preferisco, ma Skin ha indubbiamente una delle voci più belle della storia del rock e sono certa che abbia influenzato band come gli Evanescence, e per quanto mi riguarda, Secretly mi fa sempre piangere mentre Charlie Big Potato mi fa venire voglia di spaccare tutto. adoro adoro adoro, nonostante il mio loro album preferito sia Wonderlustre, che è un po’ meno metal è molto più accessibile, ma comunque dare meno di cinque stelle a Skin mi sembra un sacrilegio.

It's a really good album, with plenty of great songs. I like how they're not afraid to go really big with it at times, with driving guitars and drums, orchestral surges, great big power vocals... they also have plenty of softer moments with sweeter vocals. Some of the music is sublime, notably on tracks like Secretly or You'll Follow Me Down. It's slightly surprising that this album of theirs would make the list as there's none of their big hits in here, but this one does play well as a whole album experience.
Not my favourite. If it's on the radio I'm skipping it.

This one is a grower...it grows from a pretty low place at the start, but it does become acceptable by the end. Favorite track: I'm Not Afraid
At the start of the record, I found the vocal style incredibly unique for this era of rock, but found the butt-rock instrumentation to be goofy, like a song you would hear close a Michael Bay film. However, once it started escaping that sound and was oddly ballad songs with a hint of rock band, I found myself sorely missing the heavier sound. The album never really settled down, causing it to exhaust its welcome far sooner than what was intended. A sound following the second track's punky delivery and brash lyrics is what would've benefited the album the most, I feel, and twenty minutes shaved off the runtime. To be unique is always welcomed, but you have to go all in, otherwise you just fall into a midpoint of mediocrity and forgeability, destined to be forgotten in an era you assuredly thought you were avoiding.

I must admit I remembered these Skunk Anansie albums being a whole lot better than they are appear to be right now. Of the first three I always considered this the weaker one and the one with Weak on it the best. It has some nice agressive tunes, but not every song is as strong as the opener.
They were well-known for a period, but in retrospect, I cannot find anything unique about their music compared to the time. Some songs are good, and it is a nice listening to but... not more than that.
So truly out of my range of comfort, However truly not a bad album. Just not something I feel qualified to rate.
Racist, violent, misogynistic…why is even being listened to?
I have never heard of this band before, so I had no idea what to expect, but what a fun album. Kind of trip hop, kind of nu metal, kind of soul. Even though I enjoyed this album and I am glad I discovered it, it does seem like a weird pick for this list. High 4

Ce n'est pas le pire album alt metal que j'ai entendu, mais c'est vraiment loin d'être mémorable ou de se distinguer de beaucoup de se qui se faisait à l'époque. C'est un exemple ultra flagrant du biais UK de l'auteur ; que cet album a fait la liste mais pas que d'autres plus important, comme White Pony de Deftones, est tout simplement ridicule. 4/10

wasn't really my cup of tea. a mix of screamo/punk, and it reall wasn't my jam. kinda couldn't wait for it to be over. i think there were some glimmars of like, oh this could be cool... but every other song i wanted it to be over as soon as possible.
Ok, another British band from the 80s/90’s that I’ve never heard of. When I eventually quit this project, it will be because one of these albums breaks the camel’s back. Skunk Ansnsie? I guess it’s hard coming up with band names. But Post Orgasmic Chill? WTF, is that supposed to be cute? Or edgy? Or what? Anyway, the music is kind of interesting, props for not sounding like everything else. Unfortunately, the vocals are a bit screechy for my tastes. I dunno, call it a 3.5, but I’m rounding down to 3, cause I can’t see myself listening to this again.

I dig when the vocalist goes gritty. Not so much when she goes high and pure on her vocals. Never heard of this band before, and not likely to seek them out. They had my untrained ear thinking of The Mars Volta.
New to me, no idea what to expect. Similar to System of. Down but missing that special something.

Maybe more interesting than I remembered but a little bit too aggressive and stressful for me to enjoy.
I've never listened to skunk anansie and I'm not sure how, always been aware of them. The singer is great, she has a voice that you'd initially more associate with soul but she can push it when needed for the music in a way most singers couldn't. Combined with the 90s rock music makes the sound really unique. The best songs were the punky ones, really liked the skank heads in particular. I don't think there are enough standout tracks for a 5 but still really good.
I've never listened to Skunk Anansie - I think the name put me off. I presumed they were part of an early low-fi movement; was quite surprised at their sound. "Modern rock". I really enjoyed the guitar throughout. I appreciate that the singer and the lyrics generally drive this band, but the guitar work was notable, especially on e.g. Lately and And This Is Nothing That I Thought I Had. We Don't Need Who You Think You Are was my favourite track. Skin has a very dynamic voice, which can be a bit tiring over the 50 minute album length.
Never given skunk anansie a proper listen..... This was pretty good, quite eclectic with some quite heavy bits, but also some electronic stuff too. All without the one song I know! 3.5
I don't mind this more chilled and experimental Skunk Ananse. Would have likely have been 5 stars if it was Paranoid and Sunburnt.

It feels somehow like Evanescence combined with some Nine Inch Nails and Massive Attack at times. I don't know how to describe it really. But I enjoyed it a lot!
Think Hoobastank mixed with Evanescence. That is not a good thing.
Leans heavily on other alt rock/metal acts of its era, but this was surprisingly effective. Great singer and dynamic but a bit anonymous sound. Maybe a bit overproduced. Probably won’t return to it.

Infectious. Rage Againsty. Metally. Angelic voicing shifts instantly to thrash. I have never heard any of this before and feel like I have been shortshrifted and want to blame someone for my own shortsightedness. I want to be a skankhead. And throw my hotel tv out the window and watch with those guys in the album cover as it shatters below.
What I’m surprised by Is not that Skunk Anansie are on this list but they’ve chosen this album over their first two. Songs like ‘Weak’ or ‘Hedonism’ were truly great and innovative and showed off Skin’s vocal range and power in a new and surprising way. By album three we knew what she could do and it was still great but those first two albums, Paranoid & Sunburnt and Stoosh were out of this world. My mark here is more for the choice of album rather than the talent of the band. They were just so Trailblazing and exciting, but the impact was felt much more on the two earlier albums. And dare I say I think the earlier songs were better. This did incite me to go listen to them again though - Weak is ironically such a strong song it’s still in my head a day later.
I knew of this band but hadn’t heard them. I probably avoided them because I didn’t like their name. That is a petty reason to avoid them and, it turns out, my loss because this record is great. I was talking to Nikole and she said that their previous two albums are even better. I really like Skin’s voice. There were moments when she reminded me of Alanis Morisette without the annoying affectations.
Wow. Memory is a funny thing. When this got served up, I was vaguely familiar with the name and even had a feeling I liked the band, but my mind was a blank. As the album played, I remembered so much of it, and somehow it was like hearing it for the first time. But I played this album a good amount when it came out (where the hell did my CD get to?), and somehow this band totally fell off my radar. Skin (vocals) is a monster — in all the best ways. Yes, there are moments when perhaps backing off a smidge might have been the better move, but who the hell am I to tell her what to do. She's a force. Thank god. The band is equally fierce. I love this.
Wow do I dislike this. Something about their sound is such a turn off and I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe I just heard it on the wrong day.

I enjoyed this album so much. The lead singer is such a rock star. The presence, the heaviness, the lyrics. It’s great all around.
I have never heard of them before this. I will for sure revisit them.
I feel like I've not really listened to Skunk Anansie as much as I should given I'm a big fan of female fronted rock; Halestorm, In This Moment, Dead Sara, Pretty Reckless, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Joan Jett, Heart, Interrupters, the list goes on and on, and I've been aware of Skunk Anansie here and there, but Post Orgasmic Chill was a really good listen and compels me to add them to my rotation a bit more, certainly their hard rock stuff anyway. Skin is an iconic vocalist, I also knew that from general awareness, but her voice is the star of this show. It's effortlessly passionate, raw, angry, determined, and memorable. The music itself is pretty standard late 90s/early 2000s stuff, a little hint of nu-metal sneaking in, and nothing particularly remarkable, but it's heavy and supports the voice properly. Tracy's Flaw is a brilliant song, I really liked Cheap Honesty a lot too, some of it just blends into background listening without leaving a mark but most songs have something that leaps out and grabs you for another listen. A strong and happily surprising 4.
Another good album - on a decent run at the moment. Wasn't particularly aware of their music other than vaguely recognising the name. First 45 seconds had me thinking that we were getting another grotty 90s dance album, but it changed pretty quickly, definitely for the better. There's a decent range, floating between proper punk through to full on ballad singing, but it fits together really well. 3/5, not far short of a 4 though.

I liked the more metal focused songs. Overall I was a fan but this leaned more on the side of just an ok album for me.
2 - I was interested at the start, but this album was pretty all over the place, and there wasn't much I cared about. The vocals were nice, but none of the songs were my thing, so. It's certainly something, but it's something I'll forget about.

Aside from the unsettling title, I was not opposed to this in any way. It seemed like an interesting late 90s alternative metal and rock album. Genres which I have a lot of love for. So I figured I would like at least some part of this. I wasn’t really expecting this sound for some reason though. Never did I think I would find an album on this list that sounds inspired by S.C.I.E.N.C.E. era Incubus. I’d dare even say Make Yourself, but technically this came out 7 months before that album. Either way, they still have very similar production styles and feelings. Initially I thought the guitar tone felt very flat. The singer, whose stage name is Skin, sounded like she was actually turned up louder than the lead. I think she very much is the main focus of the music though. She has some pretty dazzling and intense moments here and there. And just like Brandon Boyd, her voice is often the thing leading the band the most. I thought the first three songs were a very solid start, and there are a few songs spread across the album that I enjoy. But too many of these songs border on something closer to pop rock with heavier elements mixed in than alternative metal. And something about the way the band plays just doesn’t fit that sound in my mind. I could be totally wrong though. I’ve read that this was a departure for them, and the heaviness is not to be found on their older albums. So I probably wouldn’t enjoy those all that much. This is a mixed bag for sure. But the highs are definitely high. The lows aren’t horrible, just not what I was looking for. Rating: 5/10
First impression from the first song (Charlie Big Potato): love it. Never heard of these guys but the singer’s voice goes so well with the hard rock background, both to contract and complement. Also love Tracy’s Flaw and Lately. I really like the overall vibe. Tempted to give it 5, but it doesn’t quite reach that level for me.

Kinda wtf but also kinda liked it. A few songs I would listen to again and a bunch of variety. Very strange and edgy which I think is what they were going for.
I don’t know about y’all, but I was completely taken back by the N-word and hard-R usage in the first few songs. Can’t say I expected to hear it in this genre at all, but it does make sense in the context. I hadn’t ever heard the term ‘clit-rock’ before either, but somehow that also makes sense. I thought there were some really great parts to this album and other parts were forgettable. Either way, it held my attention and it was an interesting band to discover, it just wasn’t a top 1001 album to me.
After reading the description for this album and listening to the first song, I thought it was going to be way more metal and heavy than it was. This was a relatively easy listen with plenty of song variation to keep it interesting. My expectations were low coming in which I think helps. There was also some random snippets of Drum and Bass throughout the album which I thought was interesting.
Interesting and engaging departure from what I can usually expect on the 1001 album list. This album is exciting, every twist and turn contains a different section or new sound I wasn't quite ready for. Heavy punk and soul influence, synthesized with some pop elements.
Maybe my least favorite album title so far, but actually a pretty solid album behind it. Some good heavy tracks and some surprisingly strong use of orchestral drama. Great singer. Best song: Lately

Honestly, one of the biggest and best surprises since I started this project, nearly 200 albums ago. I am stunned that I missed this band in the 90s. I had heard the name but somehow never came across any of their music and boy did I miss out! Musically it’s fantastic. The unfortunately named Charlie Big Potato has the chunky grooves and creative time signatures that would make any prog band blush. The lead singer has pipes FOR DAYS. She is one of the rare breed that can actually use her voice like an instrument, getting gritty when needed, or sounding ethereal and angelic when it suits the song. Add to this mix the very good lyrical writing and you have an album for the ages. Why this band wasn’t even bigger I will never know, but it’s a 5 star album for me.
This album was a pleasant surprise because I had zero expectations going in. I do think the first half of the album was stronger than the second half, but still a solid 4.6/5

Really great hard rock/metal album that's surprisingly dynamic and melodic. Ultra-saturated guitar/bass are great with some really cool solo sections, and drumming is hardcore and blast-beat, but the real standout on this record are the vocals. Skunk Anansie brings a powerhouse of a female vocalist to the record, and her melodies and harmonies are lush and soulful. She can go hard into scream, or pull back into clean soft head voice, and everything in between. Really dug this album as a whole, and appreciated the genre variability across the tracks to keep the experience fresh.
So weird. It scratched an itch for so many other modern rock/post-grunge bands that I doubt I'll ever see on this list for reasons unknown, but...why this album and not any other? This is discount Lacuna Coil.
The first time I have heard this band
The first song reminded me equally of Evanessence and Lacuna Coil. Of course we won’t find those bands here on this list. What a unique band, I wonder where they are from! Ah. But of course. I wonder if the queen ever recorded an album? If she did I’m sure it’ll be on this list. They really should have called this “1001 British Albums to listen to before you die (there’s others but it’s mostly brits)”. That’s fair advertising. I did like this band, always a fan of female lead in a rock band. And deserving of this list too, just tough to swallow 20 British albums in a row knowing so many others aren’t on this list
Very interesting! Not quite metal or punk or some other obvious category of rock, but with a peculiar edge heading that way, they call it "alternative rock" and I get it. Not used to hearing women fronting bands like this, let alone a Black woman, so that's really cool. British too apparently, I wouldn't have guessed. Really like the progression of some of these songs though, seemingly calm but then exploding with anger. Very cool album, bumping to four stars for the strength of the opener. Favorite tracks: Charlie Big Potato, We Don't Need Who You Think You Are, Secretly, And This is Nothing. This was initially pretty bad but after listening with headphones and in the car it's not a terrible album! I actually liked a lot of the songs.
This is the first group I have never heard of. They remind me of Evanesence a bit. Some decent musicianship but not a lot of real catchy songs.
Well, I think the band is accomplishing what they want on each track. Utilizing different styles and influences in the layers of each song. I do think they are somewhat limited by the vocalist, meaning each song is going to more or less sound a bit the same based on her singing style. Not my cup of tea but I think they are trying to do a little more than the average late 90s alt band here, and I think they’re doing a decent job.
I remember not liking one of their videos back in the day. I forgot that they existed until it popped up on this list. Nothing grabbed me.

I had no idea what this was going to be going in. I like it that way sometimes. I was blown away by this album. It was as if Rage Against the Machine had a lesser known but just as good and captivating cousin. And the vocals - the VOCALS. Skin is absolutely incredible and has great range. Soft and angelic one moment, gritty and angry the next. Her voice alone is worth the price of admission. The band is tight and the lyrics are always interesting. I loved this album. A rare, hard to come by 5 stars for a band and album I’d never heard of. I need more of this. 4/25/24. Never heard of this band and came into this blind, and did it grab my attention quickly! Has that 90s alt-metal sound, but incredible vocals and in-your-face, almost taboo lyrics that go for anti-racism anti-prejudice. Enjoyed this one.

I didn't enjoy this at all. 954 albums in and this comes up and all I can think of is, "Why is this here instead of any Evanescence?" Not that I'm a huge Evanescence fan, but all I could think of was how much I'd rather be listening to them than this. This far in, I want the good stuff. This wasn't it.
As a whole, this album wasn’t a big hit. I really like some aspects of the sound, but others not as much. Rounding up to a 4.
An interesting mix of styles, it kept me on my toes. The singer's got an incredibly powerful voice and a unique p.o.v. Glad to be introduced to this group.
Wow I was shocked this was made 25 years ago, because I would have believed it if I had been told it was released yesterday. Really great variety of music that at times made me think of Portishead, at times Muse… Great!
When you get an album titled "Post Orgasmic Chill" (still not sure what that name came from) from a group you've never heard of, it's hard to anticipate what you're expecting. What I really got was passion-fueled vocals with a hard-hitting rock sound and an overall satisfying and refreshing experience. Everything just flows together nicely and even slows down and gets intimate at times. A pleasant surprise!
Popular 90s rock music, the edges are too clean and sharp. I started thinking this might challenge my expectations but by half way through I tired.

Seems weird to pick this over "Paranoid & Sunburnt" or "Stoosh"? I re-listened to both of them as part of this play through, and I guess this one has some injected drum & bass in places, but otherwise follows the same formula. Eh, it's fine. Preferred the more revved up tracks to the slowed down ones on this album compared to the other two, but maybe that's just familiarity.... Fave track - "We Don't Need Who You Think You Are"
This album might be a bit less dynamic as their two previous ones, but the album still stands as a great product of the heavy rock in the 90's. Good funky hardrock with especially space for the bassguitar to excel, lyrics with a message, highly political, and a superb voice of lead-singer Skin. This band was massive in Europe in the 90's and I think I certainly didn't give them the credit back then they deserved. They fit my musical and societal tastes like a glove.

Never heard of this band. Started off not really being my thing but by the end got a little better. Still it's pretty generic sounding at times so it's nothing super special at the end of the day.
Their masterpiece. Skin tears your heart every time she sings "Secretly". Their prev records are good, but this is over the top.

post orgasmic chill was COOL. skunk anansie has such a different sound than many others. metal and punk and hard rock; skunk anansie can go hard, but the softer numbers, like "tracy's flaw" or "you'll follow me down," reveal surprising vulnerability. the lead vocalist is a big part why this album works so well, but don't get me wrong, a lot is still going right for this album. for example, her voice isn't pristine on "on my hotel tv," but its grittiness adds to the intensity. badass. this album was unexpected but enjoyed regardless. a well deserved 4.
I actually dug this quite a bit. It has similarities to alternative, punk, and metal rock genres that are popular in the United States, and yet, the configuration that Skunk Anansie achieves here is pretty much unlike anything that is popular here. This leads the album to sound slightly familiar, but also rather unique. No two songs on the album are alike, either, which just further lends to the diversity of sound that can be found on this album. Skin, the vocalist for Skunk Anansie, has an incredibly versatile voice. She's skilled at singing fast, slow, high, and low. I'm such a sucker for women of rock, and so while this band was new to me, I was ultimately right at home with this album. I struggled with deciding where to rank this album, as it is probably around a 3.5 for me. I ultimately decided to lean in the direction of a 4, as I believe this album is deserving of more than the 2.9 average score that it has.
I dig it, very angry and not afraid to get into the weeds, not a regular repeat listen but definitely a good record.
This album surprised me, I didn’t think I was going to like after the first song. However, it turned out to be a really good album. It’s just simply great music to me. Plus Skin was singing her tail off. Pleasantly surprised!.

It's interesting that this is the SA album on the list (there might be others, I hope so), not as strong as Paranoid & Sunburnt but all that means is it's 4 stars instead of 5, one of the best bands you can see live too.
Absolutely fire from start to finish. The vocalist is incredible and the constant attention grabbing soul behind the songs makes up for what would might pass for average instrumentals in today's scene. The skank heads, lately, and secretly were some of my favorites.

3.3 - A mostly mediocre follow-up to their strong debut "Paranoid and Sunburnt", this record waivers between mindless headbangers and weepy breakup anthems. It's a shame that such a talented band and exceptional singer sound so uninspired -- so much power that's wasted on lines like "you wanna do someone else."

Well this is new territory for me; I've never seen alternative (nu-metal) meet drum and bass with string. Definitely an eclectic mixture that feels very stuffed, but it works out okay on Charlie Big Potato. I dig the energy of On My Hotel Tv. Some interesting vocal production intermixed with some lovely work on the bass. Feels a bit overblown, but I enjoyed the ride. Odd outro tacked on that slips into a tripped out reverse sample + trip-hop beat. Backgrounded this for a lot of the rest of the listen. Certain songs stood out and were more enjoyable than others. I wouldn't say this is something I needed to hear to have a fulfilled life, but it also wasn't bad by any means. There was a pretty wide array of styles on display, but also some strange choices in composition. This is a pretty middle of the pack 3 for me.
Dang, I usually don't care for this slow, grungy style of rock, but this one was a fairly enjoyable listen from start to finish. It didn't all feel the same and it wasn't whiny. The vocals are powerful without being overbearing. The instrumentation has a good variety and doesn't get boring. This is one where I would give it a 4 if you compared it to others in its genre, but it's still just a 3 for me in the grand scheme of The List.
This was a total disappointment. I started out really liking the heavy instrumentals, but could never really jive with the singer. As the album went on the singer still was bad and either the instrumentals followed, or I just lost complete interest.
Idk why but this first song and the year it came out makes me think it should be on the Matrix soundtrack. This is some angsty late 90's rock right here. Hits for me sometimes others not so much. There were some songs close to the beginning that I was bopping my head along to, but this one probably won't get listened to again for me.

- I am somewhat astounded that I have never heard of this group before. A hard rock/punk/metal band with a queer black female lead singer (who describes the group as "clit-rock"), interesting guitar work, a black bassist, that (on the whole) does not shy away from experimenting, going headfirst into political themes, or punching their critics in the mouth? I am disappointed that I could not worship Skunk Anasie at 21 and now am learning to embrace them at 35. Seems like they did not expand from Britain very well. - Do I love every track on this album equally? No. "Secretly" is divine. "On My Hotel Tv," "Lately," and "Cheap Honesty" slap. But even the tracks I am not thay invested in are great to have on. I think "Charlie Big Potato" is a bizarre choice for an opening track (and a single for that matter) but whatever. - First group that feels like a gift delivered to me by this list.

i was expecting a boring hard rock album, only to be immediately shocked by those vocals! omg! finding out that this band was fronted by a black woman changed my opinion immediately.. you rarely get to hear a black female vocalist singing about racism in this type of music. some of the songs felt more like your average late nineties alt-metal, but i found that the melodies here were quite interesting and i loved the occasional use of a choir or orchestra. really cool stuff. 7.5/10, fav tracks: on my hotel tv, secretly

At first I thought this album was hard to like, but as it went on I found myself getting more and more into it. Not sure how it happened, but by the end I was thinking about previous songs. Hard to classify, but there was lots of energy and attitude, and I'm glad I was introduced to it.

Futuristic movie soundtrack.
Opens with a d'n'b beat before crunchy alt metal riffing comes in underneath female vocals. We Don't Know Who You Think You Are has a quite heavy, groovy main riff - I dig it. Secretly goes symphonic with strings and a sweeping, melodic chorus. Cheap Honesty brings back the heavy guitars and it works. Good bass too. The album covers a ton of ground, but for me it's not focused enough to be great.
The album was interesting. Nothing was recognizable and I had never heard of the band previously. It wasn't bad but I would revisit it. Better than a two but not really a three.

The complete opposite of the album's name. Seemed very appropriate for people who are mad at the world. A lot of screaming and craziness. But, if your're into that kind of thing...

I feel like this album deserves a star for most ironic album title—unless we’re talking about praying mantises. This band has zero chill. Really liked this album and not sure how I missed this band when they were popular. I’m not totally sure what genre they are—nu metal? They’re part metal, part punk, part riotgrrl!, and part Garbage-style post grunge. The album opens with a cinematic “Kashmir”-esque banger and goes pretty hard for most of the tracklist, with the occasional quieter moment, though even those have intense moments. The music mostly reminds me of bands like Chevelle and Deftones, but also groups like Within Temptation, Kidney Thieves, and even 4 Non Blondes at times. The lyrics lean heavily sociopolitical, which was a nice change from a lot of the frivolous albums I’ve been getting lately. I’m a big fan of female-fronted rock bands, and Skin’s one of the best vocalists I’ve heard. Her range in both style and literal vocal range are impressive. At times she sounds a bit like Tina Turner at her more rock moments. She’s also got the passion and emotion of Janis Joplin. The swagger of Grace Jones. The vocal maneuverability of an Annie Lennox or Sharon den Adel. And the anger of the best punk has to offer. The album has a lot of tracks and starts to feel a little weighed down toward the end, but still a solid 4/5.
3.5 stars. Starts out as occasionally creative and fun metal/rock with elements of string/orchestra layered in. Singing alternates between something different in a good way, and grating/detracting from the music. Lyrics can be aggressive but not to the point of off-putting. Starting with "Lately", which is more like generic 90's alt rock, it really slows down and gets down to soft rock or almost R&B. Different genre than the beginning of album. Standout for me was "We Don't Need Who You Think You Are" and "The Skank Heads".

Weirdly had never heard a skunk anansie album before, despite thinking Skin is great. This was a good slice of late 90s rock.

First off, love the title even if there isn’t much chill about this album. Second, this was a great mix of more hardcore and more mainstream rock of the 90s and it was a fun time the whole way through. Secretly and we don’t need who you think you are were my favs.

Oh man, this is pretty 90’s. I gave is a chance, lead singer Skin? Her voice is strong and if they leaned more into the Nu-Metal direction I thought this was originally going, it may have been ok, like an Evanescence album. Just seemed they couldn’t pick a lane and the album ends up being a bit of a mess overall. The sappy ballad like tunes didn’t do them any favours either. I came out of this pretty confused. 2 stars

Чем-то напомнает Tool. А мне нравится! Блин, это четыре или пять? Половина альбома прошла, я вслушиваюсь, я оцениваю тексты, я анализирую. Меня захватило. Всё же пять. Приятно, прям по кайфу.
Sounds like peak 90s. It's kind of brilliant. It's growing on me. The vocals are impressive. How have I never heard this?
Not bad, just not above a good album for me, not an all-time classic. Another that could grow on me, but I doubt it would get to 5 stars
Never much got into these guys. Liked the punk bits (On My Hotel TV) more than the overwrought heavy rock. Doesn't do anything for me.

That quote is about all I know of this band. See this album classified as Metal/Hard Rock. Have to disagree with that. Is there such a thing as Metal Pop? Don't regret hearing it but probably won't go back.
Didn't know what to expect with this one, but was pleasantly surprised. Like Evanescence, but British. Let your rage out.
Did not care for all of the album, but there were some good tracks.

Pre-Listen: I have never heard of this band, and can't tell by the cover art what I'm about to get into. But I'm excited to get into it. Overview: AHHHH, so THIS is who influenced Evanescence. This would be something I would play on a road trip about an hour and a half in when the nostalgic/emotional vibes start to kick in. Instrumentally, it plays around within a similar vibe but expresses it in different ways. Her voice is beautiful. The rasp in Tracy's Flaw? Ahhhhh so good. Favorite songs: We Don't Need Who You Think You Are, Lately, Secretly, Good Things Always Come To You (that bass thoooooooooo), Cheap Honesty Oddly, Charlie Big Potato (being the first song on the album) was my least favorite, but still crankable.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. I had no idea what to expect, and it does start off in a different direction than I thought, but it was a great listen. Edgy. Direct. The lyrics are epic!
OK, the album grew on me. A rough start, but pretty solid. However, why is this on a list of albums I should listen to before I die? I own at least 100 albums that are better than this one. Nevertheless, she has a great voice. And it definitely fucks the Pixies pretty hard.
I felt neither chill nor post-orgasmic at any point and my first listen kind of felt like this was on the list just to see if we’re paying attention, but I thought maybe it was just the LA traffic bumming me out and gave it another shot. I’m glad I did! I still disagree with the album title though. False advertising.

Started off really hating it but there were actually some decent songs.
This sounds like a bit of a snapshot of 90s rock, dipping into grunge, alt-rock, britpop and nu-metal on occasion, all of which I like. At no point did I think ‘wow, I really love this tune’, but it’s a solid enough set of songs sung by a frontwoman with a great voice and something to say. 3.5

Heard this one before. Last time I listened to it I really liked the sound. It is definitely better played LOUD with headphones on. Standouts: Tracy's Flaw, Good Things Don't Always Come to You, You'll Follow Me Down. 3.5 on a good day.

This started off okay, with a more electronic feel than I expected. Great voice and some good lyrics, but the general feel, once it settles into what seems the band's default, was a bit too rockist and one-dimensional overall.

This album started so punk, it was awesome. I have no idea why they changed the 5 in the latter part of the album, it really could have been 5 stars if it kept the form of the first 5 songs. Favorite track was we don't need who you think you are.
A surprisingly rocker of an album. The lead singer (Anansie?) can really belt out the tunes, and seems to be surrounded by a tight musical ensemble. Frankly, I'm amazed these folks didn't get a whole lot more airplay.

This was extremely rough to get through. Rarely have I disagrees this consistently with almost every artistic decision made. Skin is incredibly talented, and I'll leave it at that.
I’m obviously not listening to nearly enough Skunk Anansie. I don’t care as much for the sound when they go full hard rock, the worst example being “On My Hotel TV”, but the rest of the album works incredibly well. That Skin is just one of those vocalists you could listen to all day doesn’t hurt either.

I really wasn't into this mixed up rock sound back in the late 90s, it was just bad, I really don't get why this gets highly rated, because at best it's music with no identity, and at worst, it's about as good as a school band trying to be awesome rockers... and failing miserably.
