Reviews (page 3 of 8)

Works for me.

I enjoyed this a lot at the start, but then found it a bit samey. Fave Tracks: The Fairest of the Seasons, It Was A Pleasure Then, I’ll Keep It With Mine 3.9/5

Wasn’t sure if Nico was a man or a woman till reading about the album afterwards. Sometimes it felt like she was throwing her voice at the melody and hoping it landed near the pitch, which it usually did but sometimes didn’t. That said, this was very unique and charming. 7.5/10

I'm baffled as to why this album was chosen, since The Marble Index and Desertshore are far better albums. I'd agree with Nico that the flute isn't great, but I think the sparse sound (presumably due to the absence of the drums and guitars wanted by Nico) is really great. Probably my favourite track is 'It Was A Pleasure Then'.

first listen folksy artsy and nice but not too much caught my attention

I acknowledge that her voice is an acquired taste. I acknowledge that most of the genius is in the instrumentation and songwriting. I also acknowledge that "These Days" is one of the greatest songs ever written.

Excellent collection of songs, only some of them slightly too long and Nico's vocals are not entirely satisfying. I had a strong association with Belle & Sebastian (e.g., These Days) and perhaps not surprisingly Spotify switched to B&S when the album was finished.

Listened with Dad! This album is one I love, but have a hard time reconciling the person with the music. I love her voice, the simple and melancholic tone etc. Would be a 5. Docking her for her personality and actions.

A record of rich songs by multiple songwriters, elevated into the Nico genre by Nico, this is almost ruined by the overdubbed strings and flute, probably administered by a guy dressed like he’s in an extra in an am-dram production of Robin Hood, smeared all over otherwise sparse and delicate performances, but ultimately that voice and the quietly gorgeous guitar and organ work around it win out. It Was A Pleasure Then is predictably my favourite, a Velvets-direction I wish had been explored further. Still, that one song is sorcery.

As a big fan of VU, the old Bowery scene, old NYC lore and all things proto punk etc I’m kinda embarrassed to admit I haven’t done a full and proper listen to this one. I’ve never been a fan of her vocals but that’s just a personal thang. First few tracks are mostly just, for lack of a better term, easy listening. Very pleasant, chill as heck. Songs to sip tea to. It seems far less interesting than the tracks she played with VU but for a solo album it’s solid. Winter Song has a ren faire lilt to it which is a welcome change from the folky sound but then it goes back to its old form. Lyrically it’s all over the place but not terribly cliche. The mid-60’s sound production is obvious as well but done better than others from the same time. Interesting compositions too but for the most part it’s nothing groundbreaking although it is enjoyable.

Just a really cool album overall. Nico's voice took a long time to grow on me. I used to hate her songs on the first Velvet Underground album. However, she really is a talented artist. The music pairs well here, often being sad and sweet, but descending into the experimental at times. Well worth the listen 4/5

Dark, brooding are perfect words to describe this album. However it is so much more than those words imply. It is also beautiful and suprisingly tuneful. The arangements are sparse and perfectly support the lyric and Nico's emotive voice. Some might describe her voice as emotionless but I think that misses the point. This is fulfilling, at times challenging music that reveals new subtleties with each listen. 4 stars

This album is so oddly familiar, like it's been used in movies or it influenced lots of stuff.

Feels like a 3, but too good not to give 4.

it's a beautiful album. I've heard the first two songs plenty of times before but never listened so attentively, so I got to appreciate them in a whole new light – the lyrics are so subtle and fragile in a way. this album also has an impressive list of collaborators – Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, and many others. her vocals are unconventional, but rating this album 1 star because her voice doesn't sound like all the autotuned singers who sound exactly the same is crazy. anyway, listening to this just reminds me of the story of her death: she fell off a bike while on her way to buy some weed in Ibiza. both incredibly tragic and iconic

Mooie chord progressions Strijkers voegen goede diepte toe Unieke stem, valt soms té flat Sommige delen slepen lichtjes aan, maar wel mooi gebracht Subtiele mix van instrumentatie, stem die verzacht en versterkt in It was a pleasure then voegt veel toe

Listening to this convinced me that Nico is one of the more authentic singers on this list. She not a diva or a star, nor does she have any pretensions to be. She doesn’t have anything close to the voice of an angel. But when she sings I really feel like she is a real person with real emotions. Nice style of bittersweet melancholy that I enjoy in the right mood. I especially adore the first two songs

Plain voice. Vocals prominent. Mix sounds mediocre and yet the sound is unique and interesting

Lovely stuff. 3.6

Never heard of Nico and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I find this album more classic now. I can only listen for a little while.

Nico would soon find her own voice and become a true original, but for now she's making her way from VU by delivering a beautifully sombre chamber folk album. Her friends from her former band are all here to lend a hand, including John Cale who would remain a cherished musical partner. Her Dylan-esque acoustic guitar melodies are often dressed with tasty arrangements, sometimes more daring than others. It Was a Pleasure Then even sounds like what could have happened if VU was fronted by her. But for the most part it's beautiful chamber folk that distinguishes itself by her characteristic voice and presence.

I wouldn't hire Nico as a motivational speaker, but I sure wouldn't mind her writing an album for me!

That's how to craft a great dark and melancholic chamber folk album. Love it!

These Days y The Fairest of the Seasons me acompañarán desde ahora 🫡🫡

Another classic. I love her voice so much so distinct almost like it could be one of your friends recording themselves. It's maybe why it's resonates so much.

база, но есть сомнения... 4+

Это забавное. Есть очень много прикольных отсылок, чувствуется рука вельветов. Звучит очень однородно, за исключением It Was A Pleasure Then. Но там как бы да, оторвались Рид с Кейлом по полной. Меланхолично, мертвецки холодно и пугающе. Оттого и притягивает.

WOW???? her voice!! and the lyricism of These Days :')

Had super low expectations but really really liked it! Need to listen again

👍🏼

a pretty serene album. the instrumentation is nice, but nothing special. nico's vocals are an acquired taste and i don't mind them, i don't shy away from unique singing voices, but i just feel like her voice gives this album a monotonous feel that might have been manageable, except for the two 7+ minute long songs that did not need to be that long. don't get me wrong, there are some nice moments on this album - the fairest of seasons, these days, i'll keep it with mine - i just think there are better folk albums from the era that are more interesting. in my mind, the only reason this album is relevant at all is her connection to the velvet underground/andy warhol, because i don't think its merit is necessarily based on the quality of the album.

I wasn't really into this, but about midway through something clicked and I felt like I got it. Her voice really works for me, and the songs aren't half bad. Best track: I'll Keep It With Mine

A high point in Nico's post-Velvet's output. Perhaps slightly more accessible than The Marble Index, which no doubt pleased the record company.

A sophisticated and complex 60's pop record. Her voice is challenging and her harmonies are interesting. Hearing the core of the Velvet Underground in an orchestral setting is pretty cool. It is folky and Baroque and brilliant.

HL: "Somewhere There's a Feather", "These Days", "I'll Keep It with Mine", title track

I thought her voice was a bit odd at first, but it clicked with me pretty quickly. Chamber folk isn’t something I listen to, but I enjoyed this. Fairest of the seasons and title track are both great. 7/10

Beautiful album, love her voice, the strings and the lyrics. FS: Fairest of Seasons, Winter, Chelsea

t amo nico

Score: 80 Babies 1st Lingua Ignota album. I disagree with a lot of other reviews on here, I think this album is quite beautiful and honestly ahead of its time. This singer-songwriter, prolonged verse style is something a ton of artists do much better today, but this is still good. The singing and lyricism feel real and heartfelt, and while not exactly the greatest singer, I think that's kind of part of the appeal. Her deeper register works for this kind of music and sets the tone.

Love how Nico owns her songs. It is an unique approach, like hear an android talking about love and sorrow. These Days, Fairest of Seasons, Winter Song , and Chelsea Girls stole my heart. Loved it!

Mix of some songs I absolutely love and some I feel are just okay. Nico’s vocals are my favorite part of the album, and when they’re matched with the strings on here they’re elevated to another level. Very soft and delicate, but still vivid emotionally. A little too slow and thin for my taste at times, but overall 👍👍 Faves: These Days, The Fairest Of The Seasons, Chelsea Girls, Somewhere There’s A Feather, I’ll Keep It With Mine

The first two songs were very familiar favorites to me, being on the soundtrack to The Royal Tenenbaums. Also knowing her songs from the Velvet Underground, I was very excited to hear this album. Her voice is so interesting to me. I've always been a bit fascinated. There is a lot I really loved in this. This album was a bit of an overdose, though. Getting through "It Was a Pleasure Then" was not a pleasure. And I have to say that Nico was right to get angry that the flute stuff was added without her input. It kind of drove me crazy before I even read that.

I am not really sure how to express how I felt in words here. I didn't really mind it, but her voice was often so stern, I wondered if I was being reprimanded for something. Track after track with that tone did start to drain me, too. I might need a second or third listen to really know how I feel.

Not too shabby, I can see why she was selected by mister Campbells soup to join the velvety ones. In facts sounds so reminiscent that I'm thinking lou contributed. Yes I was correct, also came out after the aforementioned debut album. Producer added strings and flutes against wishes, don't totally disagree with producer man, but artist should have control... I'll keep it with mine was by bobby boy, interesting. Eulogy was very cool closer, haunting a little bit. Very enjoyable, some particular tones annoy me, but a positive experience.

Yassssss

So all the hipsters and metalheads aren't into the 60's vibe? Never mind. This is an oddity and fits into the Velvet Underground/Warhol scene with contributions from a number of them. It's true the production and arrangements are pretty insipid though- it would have been good to hear what Nico's idea for drums and guitars would have been like?

Royal Tenenbaums song

Sounds amazing at first but after a while it kinda blends together. Still great tho

Absolute Classic. Beautiful instrumentation and Nico's sonorous voice is such a good combo.

This was really good & atmospheric.

4.5/5 Quite the interesting and unique singer-songwriter album of the time. I can see how it influenced Bjork and Siouxsie + extra TVU vibes 👍

Nico is like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket on a brisk morning while having a cup of tea.

Lovely voice - lovely songs - it’s very side A heavy - the most obviously beautiful songs lie there - it just had a little distribution problem - the sunnier songs are early and gets progressively darker so it feels like it tapers off towards the end. But all in all a wonderful record.

Interesting, but I don't feel it adds much to her output with The Velvet Underground.

pangalbum

This album is a total mood, and I quite enjoyed it. It has a couple of songs on it that I listen to frequently, but this is the first time I heard it all the way through. Had I known it was a part baroque folk, part stealth Velvet Underground album, I would have gotten around to it sooner. I see why Nico disapproved of the string and flute overdubs, because the arrangements aren't particularly well timed to her vocals. I quite agree when it comes to the flute, which is superfluous and doesn't really add anything to the album. I do think the strings in particular are suited to Nico's voice though. John Cale's viola, as always, is a gift. The rambling, noisy distortions of "It Was a Pleasure Then" were jarring, but actually really welcome. That song really cuts through the softer aspect of some of the other songs and it perfectly showcases the great musical chemistry of Reed-Cale-Morrison. "These Days" and "I'll Keep It With Mine" are pure perfection. Fave Songs: These Days, I'll Keep It With Mine, The Fairest of the Seasons, Somewhere There's a Feather, It Was a Pleasure Then

Have not listened to much of her solo stuff. What stands out is her haunting voice, it adds a mystical quality to the music. Unfortunately the same voice that charms me, grates on me before the end of the album.

Beautiful music, probably wouldn't re listen often

Yet another incredible Chelsea performance

Very sparse, very pretty.

Interesting album. Chelsea girls is a banger

Great voice, a bit eccentric

Psycho folk. Non perfect vocals

Saved Prior: These Days Off Rip: The Fairest of Seasons, Little Sister, Chelsea Girls, Somewhere There's A Feather Cutting Edge: I'll Keep It With Mine Overall Notes: I feel bad for Nico, this is clearly not the album she wanted to make and it ended up being the defining release of her career. Doubly unfortunate is that I think it works decently well because it's not the album she wanted. Her whole ice queen vibe is ever-present, but the rotating cast of great song-writers and the sparse symphonic instruments that are often at odds with her vocals keep the album interesting. It's not perfect but it's unique and downright beautiful when it works.

Vackra tjunes

Very sparse but beautiful.

I'm kind of a sucker for anything related to sixties counterculture/New York/Warhol/Greenwich Village. This isn't up to the standards of the debut Velvet Underground album, but it's interesting and never dull. I can see why Nico wasn't happy with the production. In some songs the strings and flutes add a nice feel, but the album could use some drums as well. 4 stars.

Eigenlijk best leuk

hey Nico say clown! jk but this album is very pwetty

She’s got a unique voice, and the strings pair really well with it. A little like Joanna Newsom. Second half of the album didn’t do much for me though

Ja Nico i više niko

Nice. Liked: These Days

Very interesting vibe!

Very pretty album. I love the orchestral arrangements. I feel like the production added a lot.

wtf i listened to this on my own before it was recommended

Chelsea Girls is an album that shows it's beauty in a subtle way. It captures the intimacy of somebody playing music for you (and you specifically) in a small room. This Aussie gives it four bags of Freddo Frogs out of five.

Petée bien raide la Nico

Closer to a 3.7

You really need to be in the mood for this. Cool voice and this probably was the inspiration for many great things but it’s a bit of a snoozefest.

I like These Days. The rest are a bit too rambling experimental folk for me. 6/10

Very pretty minimalist songs, a couple of really outstanding ones

Pleasant but I found some tracks quite forgettable and not very inspiring.

Is this album bad? Yes. Is it also good and important? Maybe also yes. In isolation, it’s easy to call Nico a bad singer and dismiss this record, but we have plenty of albums on this list from men who can’t sing so let’s set that metric aside. I've recently been served albums by Astrud Gilberto and Patti Smith, and I'll be damned if this record doesn't feel like it falls directly in the middle of those two. As an incremental step to whatever version of Punk Rock that Patti Smith was working on. In that sense, I guess Nico is doing double duty in Punk Rock origin story. Still, all that context still only does enough to earn her a "meh" rating.

Kind of a strange record that grew on me as the tracklist went on. Good instrumentation with a unique voice. 3.2/5.0

Sounds like a female Lou Reed alright. This is by no means an album I'd like to hear more often, but it's still interesting and not half as bad as a lot of people here make it out to be.

She's cool for sure. I;d like to be her. She has a deep voice. and i like those songs what I know but the other stuff went on a bit.

not the first racist folker to write some (one and a half note) heaters. definitely not the last. 3.4-4.3.

I liked this album more than I expected to. It's very calming to me. Her voice is not amazing, but it never got annoying to me. Definitely nothing epic here, but I wouldn't mind another listen.

Never thought she was that much of a talent and only had a solo career because she was in the Velvet Underground. A so-so voice, kinda monotone and detached — so is Lou Reed’s at times, but Lou is a more emotional singer. Still a nice selection of songs. 2.5 rounded up.

She's got an interesting voice and I love "These Days", but the rest doesn't do much for me

Really interesting. Moments where I thought this was a 2 and moments where I thought it was a 4. Closer to 4

I like this album although Neek herself was apalled by the production. It was the flutes apparently. I'm hoping that Desertshore and The Marble Index will be on this list though, in my view they're far more interestiing albums. Thought by some to be difficult however, which Chelsea Girl certainly isn't.

Sweet album cover. That black-and-white photograph looks pretty good. Anyways, I assume this is the same Nico that appears in the Velvet Underground's debut album. It seems a little strange for Nico to have a solo inclusion on this list given that I've heard absolutely nothing about her solo career, though in all fairness she does have her name plastered on one of the more historically significant albums. I listened to The Velvet Underground & Nico a long time ago and haven't pulled it through the list yet, though I recall Nico's voice well enough. It's very gothic-sounding, if I'm not mistaken. Honestly, I have no fucking clue what a solo album from Nico could sound like. She'd be well ahead of the curb if this was a gothic rock album, though I'm not sure if she even belongs to rock. The only possible throughline I can draw is between her and Dagmar Krause. The vocal style of Krause's "Tank Battles" is quite similar to that of Nico's. That album had a bit of a strange, avant-garde, folky theming to it. Folk seems about right for a solo career, so fuck it. Folk it is. I am a fucking genius with the genre predictions once again. I appreciate this album as much as I don't. As far as the positives are concerned, Nico's vocals are solid. Her voice has an interesting, almost macabre sound to it which carries much of the material, though it isn't without its faults. I didn't feel like there were any moments on this album where Nico was really put to good use, with the songs largely being devoid of any strong vocal hooks, intricate songwriting or satisfying climaxes. The sections where she holds the same vocal chord (like on the title track) are also horrific. They piss me off in a way which kind of defies all reason. It sounds like that shitty woodwind instrument. The name escapes me at this point, though I'm sure someone in this cold, desolate world knows what I'm referring to. The instrumentation is tolerable with some occasionally decent moments. The twee, meek sound is generally likeable, with the acoustic and electric guitars generally being the more competent offerings. The plucky strings and elegant flutes also add a nice sound to the music. In total, the instrumentation of this album sounds like a summery spring's day, which is one of the better weather conditions, in my humble opinion. Definitely an A-tier time of the year. Overall, I respect this album aesthetically and I am somewhat interested in revisiting it. The music sounds a little empty at points and the material a little lacklustre, though the album is unique and I enjoy Nico's voice. Book time. Nico was apparently in relationships with Jim Morrison, Iggy Pop and Brian Jones throughout her career. The album was named after her appearance in Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls film. Notable songwriters on this album include Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin, three members of the Velvet Underground and Jackson Browne, who was Nico's lover during the recording of this album at the ripe age of 19 (whereas Nico was 29). A little weird, but aight. All Nico contributed to this album was a co-writing credit for "It Was a Pleasure Then". There's also a lot of variety in the instrumentation. It wasn't successful at the time, but the album has since been cited as an influence by Patti Smith and Siouxsie Sioux. Wikipedia says that the handful of critic reviews for this album have been favourable, though Nico was dissatisfied with the finished product - partly because the album's producer added string and flute sections against her wishes. I'll be honest: Nico seems to be coasting by on her floozy cred given that she contributed very little to the creation of this album in addition to it not being successful. That being said, I am somewhat favourable to this album as a bit of a time capsule. It is strange just how many connections Nico had with significant people, and I suppose this music is distinctive enough. I cosign this inclusion.

These days is classic and the woodwinds on the record are great but it's a bit tedious if a listen at time

To everyone complaining about Nico’s voice have you listened to the Bob Dylan live album yet? Yeah, her voice is not technically great but it works for some of the songs here, though at times you can tell there is a great song struggling to emerge. John Cale rescues this somewhat. I don’t hate it but I’ll not be rushing to listen again

These Days is a great track and a few other good ones too. Overall I'll give a high three

What a fascinating album. The strings and flute on many tracks sound terribly incongruous, especially with Nico's odd, flat vocals. Especially when you recall how her delivery seems to work on other records. And then you read wikipedia, and realise they were added in post-production, and that Nico was so upset by their addition that she cried. And *then* you come to It Was A Pleasure Then and Eulogy to Lenny Bruce which are preserved in their original, haunting, format where the guitars and the reverb creaks and groan beneat Nico's baroque stylings and you feel like crying yourself for what might have been.

2,6 Highlights: These Days, Chelsea Girls

I guess ok

“I can’t help it if you might think I am odd…” Well, I do. This album is full of strange poetry and pretentious verse. It’s very pretty in places, some lovely strings and inventive melodies but her voice is grating, especially after 45 minutes. It’s not something I really see myself coming back to regularly.

The voice is tough to listen to but overall not unlistenable. This has got the typical 60's psychedelic sound to it.

Interesting sound and vocalist, but a pretty average album

A little NiCo goes a long way. I found the album inconsistent, but not unenjoyable. Very mellow. I doubt it'll be one I listen to regularly, but I think if I were in the right mood I would be more into it. I wouldn't skip one of the songs if they popped up organically.

This album has grown on me, very “muse”, I know her work from the VU time, I read up about her too

she sings like she's speaking to someone hard of hearing. I'm not sure if I like it or not.

Meh, just about a 3 as I couldn’t care enough to hate it.

This is the second consecutive year I've generated a Nico album on May 16th, and I'd hardly call myself a fan of either of them. This album does fall into a category I made for this generator, titled "This album isn't great, but still gets too much hate". In my head, I was listening to a medieval concert, which was at least different. It had a charm to it, at points. The singing wasn't good, but fit the genre, if that makes sense. Favorite Track: "Chelsea Girl".

Seems like she had a pretty bad life and was a pretty messed up person. I think her voice can be very compelling but I did not particularly enjoy this album. But, I don’t know. I think there might be something to the whole 60’s, European, Andy Warhol, French cinema, Bohemian, avant garde, New York, dressing in all black and doing heroin thing. But I wonder how much of that was just a media creation to sell copies of Time magazine by writing articles about people who hated Time magazine? I don’t think I am qualified to judge whether that scene had value or not. It’s kind of cool to get glimpses of it but I wouldn’t want to get within 1,000 miles of it in real life or give it any more of my money than whatever I have spent on Velvet Underground albums over the years. I think an album can be kind of bad and something you never intend to listen to again and still have been worth hearing once. Personally, I’d rather listen to music made for people to enjoy without needing to feel artistic and nihilistic and existential at the same time but I guess I am glad that the Nico’s of the world were out there avant garde-ing for us squares.

Nice and cozy.

Very out there and dreamlike. What you expect from Nico. 6/10

been a minute since i last heard this one. it's fine. prefer my nico with the velvet underground vs solo.

A very smooth and sultry album

Listened previously. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Good - I listened to this once about ten years ago so this is effectively a new listen. I love Nico's voice, it's so unique. The Fairest Of The Seasons is a nice song and I can see why These Days is the biggest song here, it's really good. I also like Winter Song. I usually like weird psychedelic explorations but It Was A Pleasure Then doesn't do anything for me. Chelsea Girls is better. The rest is good as well. Solid album but nothing crazy.

Nice and noisy, experimental.

6/10 Esta bueno, pero tiene un tema donde no desafina apropósito los instrumentos y el micrófono, me fundió eso. No me aburrio pero me condicionó muchísimo esa parte, por el resto bastante bien, no es una locura pero cumple

Lovely

60s female folk singer

I thought that Chelsea Girl was an album that did it's job pretty well. I only really knew Nico from her collaboration with The Velvet Underground on the album named after both of them and i will say this album was better musically than that album was. Like i said, this album had some pretty good music with the main show stealer being the violins as they were really nice sounding. Nico also had a pretty nice voice and the lyrics on offer were also pretty good. I will say that there are some points where the songs were not very well composed and that wasn't fun to listen to but other than that, this album is pretty good. Best Song: I'll Keep It With Mine Worst Song: It Was A Pleasure Then

The album is fine but I’m giving myself 3 stars for thinking I’ll keep it with mine sounds like a Bob Dylan song and then learning it was written by Bob Dylan

It's relatively nice. Sucks that she's racist though (8/10, 4/5 on this scale) (Update: 3/5 on this scale, not too spectacular in hindsight besides two or three tunes)

Super bonito, me encantó para esos momentos que necesitas paz mental. Combina con el dia de lluvia q tuve hoy.

videogame tavern music. listenable

I really don't know what to say about this one... There were many good things about this album, but then a lot fell flat for me, too. The vocals, throughout, were lovely to listen to. Nico's voice has a really soothing quality to it, further supported by the calming tones of the instruments throughout the entire album. However, I feel you can always have too much of something. After the first 4 songs, it started to become... boring, I suppose. I really enjoyed the first half of the album, but then, when realising that the rest of the songs sounded pretty much the same, I started to get a bit fed up with it. Listening to these songs separately, maybe mixed in a playlist, I feel I would enjoy them a lot more. But one after the other, it becomes tedious. As much as 'Chelsea Girls' is one of my favourite tracks on the album, I feel it went on for a bit too long. I love a lengthy song, but only when it utilises the time to experiment a bit and try different things throughout. A repetitive song that lasts 7 minutes, however, kind of leaves you waiting for it to end... It was the same feeling I had when I was listening to 'Elvis Presley Blues' by Gillian Welch. Granted, this song by Welch was only 5 minutes, but it was incredibly repetitive from start to finish. Favourites: The Fairest Of The Seasons These Days Chelsea Girls

Es muy suave para mi estilo

peaceful fav song: Somewhere There's A Feather

Maybe the first instance of the life-long phenomenon where I really liked an artist and then everyone was like "she's tone deaf" I have an abiding love of These Days, but maybe a full album was too much time with Nico. That said I've been driving around singing The Fairest of Seasons in my best deep-toned, german-accented naturally off-key singing voice.

I remember trying to like "These Days" for some reason as a teenager (probably other, cooler people I looked up to liked it) and struggled. It hit pretty good today. I think I've also grown a little more open to "odd" vocals, which Nico has for sure. 3.5

YO how can you guys hate music from The Royal Tenenbaums 😭😭😭

There are a lot of great songs here. As an album experience, though, Nico’s lack of vocal range makes the songs start to feel boring/monotonous by the end.

есть нордические вайбы. местами скучновато, но оч приятно

I think I've heard of this album but never actually listened to it. I'm not sure in what context I would have seen this but it is sort of familiar. Maybe from the Velvet Underground connection? And I do love a good woman-fronted pretentious art rock album so hopefully this fits the bill. I'm a little less optimistic after reading a few of the reviews. I should never read the reviews before listening to the album I suppose. Halfway through and I'm a bit torn. I like the idea, I like the vibe, I like the music. But the voice is just not doing it for me. Its sort of a monotone drone that just forms words. I get the hate but I can also see how this could have been an amazing album. I feel like the voice doesn't fit with anything else - like they recorded all the music and then she just sang over it but with completely different recording equipment and no attempt at making the sound fit together. Kind of hard to rate because I really wanted to like this one but the flat droning voice just took me out of it. Had the vocals been better and the production more even this would have been an easy 4. As it is, I find it hard to give it more than a couple of stars because I wouldn't ever listen to this again. 2.5/5

Irgendwie geil

This album is definitely worth a listen, but apart from 2 or 3 songs, I doubt I'll come back to it. I feel like it's getting some unnecessary hate in the reviews though. Do the same people complaining about Nico's voice feel the same about Lou Reed's out of tune singing?

I really liked the first two songs. The rest of the album was good but not my type of music.

Pleasure then is worth a skip. The rest of the album almost scratches that Moody Blues itch.

I really enjoy Nico's voice. It was made for movies. First two songs both used by Wes Anderson in perfect moments. As a whole album it misses the mark, but I like hearing her voice.

These days är ju lite poppis, förstår varför

You can hear the sadness in her voice, yet she still sounds so German. The feedback on It Was a Pleasure Then was painful. Most of her music was very poetic. I enjoyed the flute and harp. Overall, not for me.

Not bad but not the vibe for me

Pleasantly weird album today. Little bit of flute, little bit of distorted instruments, bit of a folk vibe. It was a pleasure Nico. Likely would not re-listen to this one but did enjoy it. Favourite song is ‘These Days’ for me though ‘It was a pleasure then’ was close just a bit long

Decent

After those first three songs I was preparing myself to give the rare five star for a folk album…but nothing else came close after that. Which is a shame. Obligatory: I like her work in the Velvet Underground.

2,5 trop repetitif

It feels a bit desperate in an almost endearing way.

This was pretty good, but I certainly have a couple complaints. Firstly, the elephant in the room is that outside of that Velvet Underground record, I dont listen to a lot of Nico, and frankly a lot of it is because she was *extremely* racist, especially since I have no shortage of artists who can fill the weird chilly singer-songwriter shaped hole in my heart in her stead. Anyways, with that out of the way, the music is pretty solid here. This is a singer songwriter record with a sparse palette and kind of an artschool beatnik vibe. The Velvet Underground's debut is honestly not a bad point of comparison, especially in it's less rock centered moments. I also generally like Nico's performances here. She has a cold, droning voice that reads as eerie and confrontational, which tracks, given everything I know about the woman. The quiet acoustic guitars and flutes and cellos here give the album a slight neo-classical slant as well. I will say that while the aesthetic is cool and probably Chelsea Girl's defining attribute. It's also not an anesthetic that carries it; going sparse and drone-y and weirdly in a context like this only flies if the songs are good, and many are. These Days is pretty and wistful, as is Winter Song. It Was A Pleasure Then has some really cool noise stuff going on. And Eulogy To Lenny Bruce is one of the starkest, most vulnerable moments here. What remains is largely decent, but some of it loses a little definition in it's sparseness. And I'll also say that there are a couple of moments here that would have benefited from a slightly more tuneful style of singing. But overall, this is a neat album with some real stand outs. As I alluded to, I dont really see myself coming back here much, but I suppose Im probably glad to have heard it.

This album was definitely not as bad as a bunch of these 1 rating reviews are making it out to be. Sure, there are a couple songs that get a little meandering and experimental. However, there's a number of songs here that have a nice airy, folky quality to them. This album certainly isn't incredible, but it's not bad either.

We all have to sit through 7 Bob Dylan albums with screeching harmonica on this list. Stop pretending this is torture because it's not conventional vocals. This is a solid album for the 1960s. The arrangements of guitar, strings and flute make for a generally pleasant album. The album drones on a bit, but that's the main flaw. 5/5 for an opium den, but 3/5 for me.

I like her better without the velvet underground, but there's still a lot of velvet underground on this album. I, like Nico, think the flutes are a bit unnecessary. Favourite song: These Days Least: It Was A Pleasure Then

Nowhere near as bad as people here are saying it is, especially the first few tracks which are great. It does fall of a little into the B sides, but overall I liked it.

I disliked this one as I was listening. Mostly Nico’s disconnected voice in too large a dosage. Then once it ended I thought “I’m going to listen to that again. It was good.” Brains are stupid.

Thought I was going to hate this, but enough big songwriting names and Cale madness to get it across the line

Reminds me a bit of Amanda Palmer. I wouldn't be surprised if Palmer's main influence was Nico. The flute wasn't nearly as awful as Nico made it out to be.

Nico is cool idc what Briggs says

There's a definite charm to this. It's obviously nowhere near touching her album with The Velvet Underground, but there's obviously a lot of the same DNA flowing through it.

Some of this was beautiful, and some of it was horrible. So, 3?

Liked this more than I thought, but it does drone on. Her voice isn’t great but works.

I agree with Nico, what was with the flute? It would have been so much better without it. The guitar playing by her ex band mates was sensational which complemented her distinct tectonic vocal style. Even with the flute it was a good listen.

Un peu de douceur féminine après 41526 albums rocks/métal, ça fait du bien.

Reminded me of Marianne Faithful. Nice voice.

This was kind of a weird album. It was pretty repetitive at times, and there were some annoying screeching sounds, but there were a few nice songs. I actually kind of liked the chill mood, so this wasn’t a hard listen (apart from the screeching). Definitely not a good album by any means, but decent nonetheless.

i'm not crazy about her vocals which tend to drone, but i like the music on a lot of tracks (not the ones that sound like old english folk music)

Had dit 's avonds aan, was wel chill

leuk album maar het doet me vooral denken aan dat haar werk met the velvet underground beter was

it's a good little album. "these days" is probably the best known song (penned by jackson browne). other songs written by/contributed to by big name artists - dylan, reed, cale, hardin. she can't really sing, but it's kind of charming?

I liked when it started and ended. Didn’t like the middle or her voice

obsessed w this album cover but so far songs are a little slow for me favorite song: these days

Not my thing.

"Chelsea Girl" is the debut solo album by German singer Nico. Folk rock, baroque pop, avant-pop, art rock and experimental rock are the Wiki-listed genres. The album was recorded following the debut album from the Velvet Underground in which Nico participated and features instrumental and songwriting credits from members of the Velvet Underground, Jackson Browne and Bob Dylan. Nico sang the vocals. Other musicians included Jackson Browne (guitars), Lou Reed (electric guitar), John Cale (viola, organ, guitar) and Sterling Morrison (electric guitar). The album had mostly decent critical reviews but was a commercial flop. "The Fairest of the Seasons" written by Jackson Browne begins with an acoustic guitar and strings. A gentle song. Nico with airy vocals sings about fading love and a failing relationship. "These Days" has layered, melodic guitars and more strings. Reflective and longing vocals in another song about mistakes and a bad relationship. There's no doubt about the songs where members of the Velvet Underground were involved. "It Was a Pleasure Then" has a droning sound, feedback from an electric guitar and strings. A chaotic ending with an experimental and screeching viola. This is automatically put in the "play loud to piss off neighbors" category. "Chelsea Girls" begins with strings. A down-tuned guitar and a flute. Subtle layered guitars in the most melodic song on the album. Nico sings tales of the bohemian residents, artists and addicts in the New York Hotel Chelsea. The Bob Dylan cover "I'll Keep It with Mine" has an acoustic guitar and lovely and uplifting strings. Emotional vocals in a really good song. The music on the album is baroque with the strings, folksy with the tales and acoustic guitar and avant-garde experimental with the distortion and screeching instruments. This all depends on the songwriters with the songs from the Velvet Underground being experimental and having flutes, viola, lots of strings and distortion and songs from Browne and Dylan being the folksy ones. Nico's vocals have lower a tone, a darker and haunting edge but can be emotional. There are ups and downs with some cringe-worthy moments but, overall, I quite like this album. I would say if you're a Velvet Underground or a baroque pop fan there will be parts of this album you'll like.

thought i would enjoy this more but i didn't really get into it

The Fairest of the Seasons 3.8 These Days 4 Little Sister 3 Winter Song 3.4 It Was a Pleasure Then 3.2 Chelsea Girls 3.5 I'll Keep It with Mine 3.6 Somewhere There's a Feather 3 Wrap Your Trouble's in Dreams 3.2 Eulogy to Lenny Bruce 3 Score: 3.37

If your feeling really great, this album is the perfect downer! I've never done heroin, but I think I know what it's like now. It's the perfect blend of nihilism, depression and renaissance fair. It's not that I didn't enjoy it, or find it to have some fairly well-written songs. It's just a real downer. Off to the bummer tent.

I always appreciate very early attempts at distortion and noise, even when they don't quite hit the mark

Pretentious nonsense but Nico & John Cale had already earned that right by 67.

It probably deserves 4 stars, but I just don't love her voice.

Yo, this is aight. A lot of the reviews here sound personal. It's like Nico did something to these people or they just live to hate lol. Is it great? Nah. Is it perfect? Nah. It's rough around the edges but its 100% a must listen. I enjoyed it and liked how it sounded. A bit arty-farty but pretty unique shit. 3 solid star.

Struggling with rating this one because it has two of my absolute favorite songs (The Fairest of the Season, These Days) and I love her voice and singing style, but as a whole I don’t think it’s such a great album. Was surprised by some other songs I didn’t know but liked a lot (Chelsea Girls, I’ll Keep it With Mine). Just wish the production was overall stronger and cut down in places. Might revisit as a whole. Top Songs: The Fairest of the Season, These Days, Chelsea Girls, I’ll Keep it With Mine

Not bad. Iconic album.

She's got an interesting voice. I definitely picked up the velvet underground feels

Very unique. Not a bad album. Just not my thing but glad I gave it a listen.

There's one song I love so much (days like these) but the rest is just okay

Some great songs but also some questionable ones. Very similar to The Velvet Underground album, which she was also apart of, and I felt the same way about that.

alright

Obviously iconic. However, a full album of the same thing got a little boring after a bit. Deserves to be held up as a classic, important album but I’m just not sure I want to listen to the whole album in one go.

It's the sound of Wes Anderson's wet dreams: the lady with the dark brown voice and a hell of a backing band. She sounds bored by the songs she's singing but that's kind of the selling point. The songs are pretty great, as is this album. Nico apparently hated the production and that is the thing that is fairly offputting and makes it seem a tad cheesy. I'd love to hear the album without all the Mantovani strings and with just guitar and drums as she wanted it. Anyway... Best Tracks: The Fairest of the Seasons; These Days; I'll Keep It With Mine

I think lyrically she’s good, but I really have a hard time with Nico’s voice

Meh. Didn't really care for this. Wasn't bad. Just wasn't my taste. I really love the album she did with The Velvet Underground. So I was definitely interested in this, but yeah. Just wasn't really that great.

2.74 rounded up.

It's not bad, but it's also not good

Some really nice songs but sort of one notey and not that interesting.

Folky, like her voice, gets a bit chaotic at the end. Find this to be an ‘of the times’ album in the way it’s presented and vfeels grounded in its era. 3.0

Interesting, maybe 3.5

Recognized a couple. Enjoyed a few.

Pretty cool. Love that Dylan, Jackson Browne and lou Reed all involved

Not much on this album was up to the level of the tracks that Nico sang on The Velvet Underground and Nico, but I thought that this was okay. Maybe the reason why this has such a low average rating on this site is because some people can’t stand listening to a woman with a thick German accent for 45 minutes?

Calm and artsy. The avant-garde noise can sometimes be unsettling, but I appreciate efforts like this, especially from the era it hails from. The vocals and instrumentation are pleasant, and the lo-fi engineering adds another subtle warmth to the record.

Good stuff, nothing mind blowing

So I was pretty happy with the first two songs. I appreciate the "Landslide"esque quality of the subject matters, with the baroque strings assisting the rolling guitars. But the reviews and the popularity of the following songs had me a bit wary, and her voice certainly wasn't knocking me off my feet. It did incline in quality a bit, but my goodness the negativity surrounding this album seems overblown. I like the minimalist, upright, slightly macabre vibe this record has going for it. The chorus of "I'll Keep It With Mine" may be my favorite part of the album, that or the first two songs in general. It may come off a bit artificial, as i think Nico is very concerned with the aesthetics as much as she is the music, but this is not bad at all. 3/5, a few variations in arrangement coulda really took this thing to the skies, as the bones of good songs are all over this thing

Starts with two back-to-back, all-time-great, twee chamber-pop rippers, before promptly descending into (mostly) inaccessible caterwauling. Hard to gauge!

Expected a bit more from this given Nico's work with The Velvet Underground (and that some of the songs feature members of that band). Ultimately I don't think Nico is a strong enough singer to really carry an album and whilst musically there are a few decent moments, it's generally pretty unexciting.

Ihan mielenkiintoinen levy. Aika taiteellista folkkia. Tää artisti oli mukana Velvet Undergroundin banaani levyllä. Parhaat: Winter Song

I get the rancor, a lot of how you feel about this album is going to come down to what you think about the vocals — Nico’s voice and affectation. Otherwise, I find it to be a sometimes pedestrian, sometimes interesting folk and art pop album. Personally I like her voice and it was a chill vibe, so I dig it. But I can see why it would be divisive. Seems pretty average IMO.

This is such a wildly inconsistent album. This is my first time revisiting it since I was in high school, where the sort of mythic velvet underground chanteuse vibes afforded this album a bigger presence in our lives than it really deserved. That said, These Days is a classic and Winter Song is way too English folk adjacent for me not to love. Everything else, eh.

This album had some really good songs and some long unnecessary ones. Favorites were 'Winter Song' and 'I'll Keep It With Mine'. Didn't care for the title track or the closer as much. I think I'd have to be in a specific mood to listen to the whole thing again, but this was a good album for a snowy day at the office, and I'm glad it was on the list.

Kinda spooky, folky

This got a bit boring after a while. The vocals are almost haunting.

It’s the same song over and over but at least it’s an okay song

Cool stuff here.

3 and a half, solid record.

Love These Day. The rest of the album is emotionally heavy enough to give your soul shin splints.

It’s okay. The skeptic in me says she made this for heroin money. The Jackson Browne cover of These Days is nice, but I’d rather listen to it performed by… Jackson Browne.

Just listened to The Velvet Underground & Nico so while working through my backlog of albums this is the next natural place to go. "These Days" is an amazing song, just an all time classic. Rest of the album is good, but just not quite great.

These Days is on constant rotation. it's just a beautiful song that is somehow improved by Nico's singing. The rest of the album is pretty one note and It was a Pleasure Then is just awful.

go white boy (girl) go? Would I listen again: no Deserves to be on this list: i guess 3.1

This album is walking a very thin line between being inspiring and sounding whimsical and just being disjointed. While I believe Nico has the vocal capacity, her tonal harmony seems off for most of the songs. I'm no musician, but I can appreciate a sense of harmony and this was lacking in most of the songs, it just dragged on without a distinct pattern for most of the cases. Perhaps it's not my cup of tea

Puntje eraf.

An interesting album that definitely belongs. Shows that technique is nothing compared with an honest and fearless delivery. Oddly, I love the album VU & Nico and am generally bored by Jackson Brown. But here Brown’s songs are my favorites, and the songs with VU kind of break the mood.

“You know, this could be a fall album, winter album, or even a spring album. But it is NOT a summer album.” is what I told Casey who then informed me we were listening to a song called “Winter Song”

A unique strain of orchestral folk, Nico's solo debut is uneven in quality but interesting. Mostly gentle and melancholy, the timbre of her voice is very unique and lends the songs a smokey/mystical take on the 60's Greenwich Village singer. You can definitely hear the influence of her collaborators/songwriters - some of the best in the biz. Title track slaps and is the highlight for me. Nico ain't paying any drummers!!

Cover 6 Hum drum. But that's what I initially thought about Velvet Underground and now I love VU including Nico's songs. So I'll need to give this another listen.

Alright. Kind of cool but need a better setting.

3- Stars (7/15)

If I’m being completely honest, I really only like the first two songs.

There’s a couple good songs here, but the delivery is sometimes in the way. Nico doesn’t exactly sing in tune - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. These Days is the best song on the album. Other notables include The Fairest of the Seasons, I’ll Keep It With Mine

Interesting folk style

Quite liked a fair bit. Trippy 60s folk. Some nice digital instrumentation and strings. Other bits just a bit too meandering.

This felt more interesting than good. These days I love and I really enjoyed the guitar playing on track 1. I'm not sure I ever became comfortable with Nico's voice and the baroque arty Ness of it felt a bit forced at times. Gave me an opportunity to read about Warhol's group of people though which is an interesting, very influencial part of 60s culture. I enjoyed of stripped back it all is and there are some lovely guitar parts.

Have this album, listened to half will listen to rest eventually

I didn’t mind it at all. I’m not it hint to relisten, though. I feel like, if I wanted to listen to this album, I would’ve already, you know? It’s a three from me, dawg.

Interesting

Tem algumas faixas com uma vibe meio mística, antiga, igual da Kate Bush, algo meio medieval, talvez. Is Was A Pleasure Then - Gostei, tem vocais, instrumentais, um cantado mais longo, calmo. Achei muito repetitivo, algumas faixas são muito parecidas, pouca versatilidade.

I didn't hate it, and I wasn't hoping for it to end. In fact, I somehow could have done with another couple of tracks possibly. I agree about the flutes though, and they prevent this from becoming a 4 star album.

I liked it I thought all the songs had really good meanings and super cool instruments just some of the songs were a hit to long for me.

I quite liked that. I'd only ever heard one song that I know of (These Days) but didn't know who it was or when it was recorded.

There are some good songs on here, some that were a lil out there, her voice is an acquired taste that I've acquired.

Melodic riff spinning stories that are worth hearing

The Fairest of the Seasons is nice, and I always liked These Days. Love how odd and offkey her voice sounds in general. Really hated It Was A Pleasure Then - I know what she was going for, but leave it to The Velvet Underground to pull off that type of experimental meandering. Love the spooky sound to Chelsea Girls and the way it sounds like an entirely different song but complementary song is playing softly in the background on guitar while she's singing (seems more in sync in the bridge) Love the hopeful sound to I'll Keep It With Mine

Listened to the precious record where she appeared, but this is her solo record. Soft songs with beautiful lyrics. It was okay.

Surprisingly rates this! Easy listening, well composed and comforting

Pretty cool, 60s experimental vibes

just the one. the rest were fine, nothing wrong with them

First album ❣️

Alright indie sound. Wasn't in the mood, but wasn't against it

Inoffensive

Unique voice, a bit psychedelic. Hi Nico, bye Nico.

From the first few bars I knew this would be a pleasant album. Her singing does feel a bit too vintage for my liking, but some really beautiful songs.

interesting genre, very sweden-y

Nico! Jazz flute! I only care about the songs that are in Wes Anderson movies.

Quite enjoyed the mix of melancholy vocals with the strings and acoustic guitar

Man, a little Nico goes A LONG way

Depressing and droning to listen to, if that's your jam. Tracks to Track: These Days

This was a nice sister album to nick Drake's work which also has a bit of monotony and drone used as a strength rather than a weakness. However, even with it's famous collaborators and writers, Chelsea Girl has some pretty boring sections. Easy 3/5

I thought I would like this more since she was great with velvet underground but it was mediocre.

Fairly relaxing and not unpleasant. A little bit too morose at times though

Started off strong. Ended weak. I’ll listen to the first half of the album again.

Mesmerizing. Her voice takes some getting used to, but it has a certain haunting magic. The music adds to that as well, overall it's being lost in a weird kingdom where something just doesn't seem right, but it's beautiful, so let's see where we end up, I guess?

Some great songwriting on there. But her voice is a limitation

This is a stylistic and melancholy album, with some really nice vibes. It's a toes-in-the-water, sweater-by-the-fire, read-a-book-in-a-forest kind of vibe.

Ok Album, "Chelsea Girl" was the Best song while "It Was A Pleasure Then" Was the worst. 6/10

Extremely strong start, first three songs are all excellently dreamy. The sparse production really sets the tone while the progressions and beautiful singing keep it mesmerizing. Hit a huge lull in the mid point with a very needless 8 minute song, followed by a near painfully repetitive 7 minute song. The remaining tracks are enjoyable but none worth sitting through the 15 minute mid point. Favourites - The Fairest Of The Seasons, These Days, Little Sister, Somewhere There’s A Feather

Felt like S+G Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme but not as good. Best song: Chelsea Girls Notable(s): I’ll Keep It With Mine

Este es uno de esos discos polarizantes que generan opiniones completamente dispares: o lo amas o lo odias. Yo estoy más de la primera opinión a pesar de que la voz de Nico no es la más brillante, pero es que me encanta el folk más experimental. 3/5

tiresome. 2

the largest throw job by the instrumentals for the vocals, if you look at the wiki for this album even the vocalist hated how the songs sounded.

It was alright 3.4/5

The lyrics of every song was great. Favourite Chelsea Girls.

This is some good hippy shit. She has a bassy voice, but it works. I prefer Joni Mitchell's voice and music, but Nico is gangster. Winter Song was nice and different. I like the strange string arrangements on here. Pretty good album, but not more than a 3.5

enjoyed this except that one song that fucks your ears (in a bad way)

I felt mixed on this one. I love these days (although I prefer when Jackson Browne sings it) and also the winter song. I actually enjoyed most of this record, the arrangements and orchestration was so good. I can't quite decide whether I liked this partly because of Nico's singing or in spite of it. It definitely is unique. I'm feeling a 3 on this, I think if I had spent more time with Tanner in high school I'd like it even more. solid 3/5

Never heard of this artist. A little mellow for my taste. Pretty music pretty voice. Not for me though

…And welcome to everyone’s favorite show, Do You Believe In Life After The Velvet Underground! This is certainly an interesting album. I hadn’t really thought about the fact that Nico had albums on this list, but, I guess I was wrong. This album is not what I expected it to be. I thought it was going to be some weird experimental album, but I was pleasantly surprised to realized that it teetered more towards the side of baroque pop. The songs an are decently good, Nico has a good, strong voice, although it can kind of begin to drone when you hear it for a whole album. The songs also have some instrumental help from members of The Velvet Underground(So that’s a no if you were waiting for the answer to the question I posed earlier.) The album also has a variety of string arrangements, which sound pretty good, even though Nico was upset to realize they were added without her consent, which I get. I don’t feel this album has much I’d come back to, but it was still a decent album.

Love her voice, but most songs blended together (not unpleasantly).

Haunting tunes, marred by baffling arrangement choices and subpar production

7/10, these days is such a classic

nice enough

like the raw and minimal feel of the sound. if only it was more diverse in terms of melodies, it wouldnt be that boring.

Pretty calm but not bad

60s pop

If I had been alive in the 60s I think I would have loved this. A lot of cool musical moments and nicos voice grew on me but I think it's best in smaller doses like on the velvet underground albums. I enjoyed it but probably won't listen again

I generally like folk AND 60s weird shit so I was predisposed to like this -- and I did, at first. But it overstayed its welcome. Jesus, Nico's sustained notes in Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams almost drive this down to a 2. I simply do not think she's good singer, but her ideas are interesting.

Yeah it’s ok
