Reviews (page 5 of 12)

loved this one!!! the lively instrumentals and unique (but not grating) vocals were a pleasant change from most of the british alt rock/punk bands I’d heard before (to me, unlistenable) yours is no disgrace REALLY hooked me, the clap was an awesome demonstration of free style guitar, and perpetual change put the album to sleep in a very satisfying way… (starship trooper and all good people were great too but took a bit of stamina lol). glad I was introduced to this band!

Why does the book review randomly start with a mention of the Indo-Pakistan war? And then simply not mention it again. Anyway, to relevant points. So this is pre-Wakeman Yes. It's also the last Yes album on my journey and the first chronologically. I remain largely baffled by Yes even though I enjoy prog. My previous two Yes reviews both mentioned Flaming Lips but that is not apparent on this record. Did Rik Wakeman invent the Flaming Lips by mistake? First two tracks, so far so baffling. Starship Trooper though, a song in three parts and I've got to say this is easily the most I've ever enjoyed a Yes song. Like it sticks with a rhythm/melody for long enough for it to grow into you and get hooks in. You know, like music is supposed to, something they appeared to grow less concerned about as they progressed. Ah - I've Seen Good People, here are the Flaming Lips. And if I'm not mistaken, it's another really good song - am I going to enjoy a Yes Album? Well bloody hell. Perpetual Change rounds things off well, and the most woogly woo song I think it's fair to say. They've done it. They've earned a good rating, 3rd time of asking.

Easily my favourite Yes album. It rocks the hardest. Chris Squire's bass playing is a particular hilight, just listen to Starship Trooper to hear his virtuosity. But it's because the songs are good with actual hooks. These are songs, pop songs not just exercises in wankery. My favorite part is the last part of Starship Trooper - just a good melodic riff that always gets my head bobbing up and down. Just not sure the point of The Clap, 1/2 star penalty. 4 stars

I was a big fan of Yes in the late 1980s, so getting on for two decades after this album dropped. I have to admit that this album didn't get a lot of play compared to some others. Starship Trooper, particularly the end section, is the highlight, but the rest of the album is great. The follow up album is better in almost every way, but this is still an easy 4 stars for me.

I didn't remember this album, these songs, til I started playing it - and they were suddenly so familiar that I realised I must have bought it. I know i had one Yes album back then. I’m sure I've Seen All Good People was a hit. Memories of listening to my transistor radio under the bedclothes late on a school night surface. I enjoyed this album for its nostalgia value, but god knows what anyone born after 1980 would make of it. I think their brains are hardwired differently now. A 4 for the memories. Won’t ever listen to it again, though.

First time listen. Only marginally familiar with Yes. Great vibes, episodic and journeyish, from some bluegrass-like guitar noodling to harder more psychedelicky sections. Put me in mind of Grateful Dead, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Doors, America. Favourite track was Your Move.

Schon nice

Good Prog album.

Fun, good vibes, would say it's time we'll used to give it another go.

Yes is a band I haven’t spent a whole lot of time with but as I’ve kicked around the edges of prog now and then (and recognized their hits) I’ve felt like they’re a band I would enjoy. And here is a delightful example of that. Yes, this is all very noodly and goofy and no I wouldn’t think everyone loves it. But the sound, the directions they’re pushing, the mix of folk, organ, rock, shuffle, metal - it’s a heavy dose, and it’s really, really solid. One of those few albums where you go “oh no dig deeper dudes, there’s a lot more to get to.” “Yours is No Disgrace” has this funky country twang and picking under a truly fuzzed blown out bass, clean licks and a truly punchy organ. There’s a lot going on, but in a good way. “Clap” is more folksy and a bit of an outlier. It’s pretty but it’s not doing a whole lot here. “Starship Trooper” fucking rules, especially the last third. When the organ comes in at the end with a roar to back the riff, we’re deeply into prog metal and it’s absolutely perfect. Seminal tune. “I’ve Seen All People” is the one song I definitely knew from this album. The first movement is honestly the better half, as the chorus, church organ and band builds behind the refrain and pulls together. The rest of the song runs more as an extended jam riff, but it’s not as powerful as the first half. “A Venture” is a jazzy little number that’s got a lot of fun twists and turns, even if it feels a bit like carnival music sometimes. BTW, among all of this, the lyrics are SOLID. There’s real poetry here among the prog, not just weird fantasy images that some attribute to the genre. These are real brainy tunes, but not in a way that’s over the top. “Perpetual Change” is a little more ponderous and wandering than the earlier tracks. And then THAT part happens where the polyrhythmic split happens and…ok well now we’re into the full limits. This band knows how to BUILD. Really cool album. Love digging deeper on these dudes, can’t wait for more.

Enjoyed

Wow, this album is really enjoyable. I really liked all of the long songs because they went through different phases but were still very clearly a single unit, and also weren’t so long that they were overwhelming. I can feel a lot of musical creativity in the songwriting.

I really liked this actually. The singing kinda reminded me of Chicago maybe? The way they harmonize the vocals while they’re belting them. Either way, I really enjoyed it. Thematically consistent and succinct. Without ever having heard it before I enjoyed it. 4.

I wonder how many reviews for this album are just ‘Yes.’ and nothing else? A really good album that I wasn’t expected after our earlier Yes experience. Will definitely return to this one again, especially a couple of the songs like I’ve Seen All Good People.

Best track- Starship Trooper Worst track- A Venture ⭐️Rating- 8.4/10

Oehhh I really liked this

In Dave Weigel’s book, one of the band says the association of “Yours Is No Disgrace” with the Vietnam War only came later -- um, is that how songwriting works? Or is this an example of deconstruction and the death of the author? Or an application of Greil Marcus' theories about music's time-bending properties? Prog rock’s intersection with literary theory is perhaps yet to be fully explored. One thinks it’s safe to say that Yes is the prog rock band that had the best hooks (see “Yours Is No Disgrace” and “Starship Trooper” and “Seen All Good People” are all excellent – and still sound good); so they would have been best positioned to succeed in the non-prog-rock era (e.g., when three-minute songs were the rule, but also in the jam band era), and their success as prog rockers also suggested that hooks still mattered, even in that aesthetically elevated genre. So the question to ask is would the songs have been better served as simpler, three-minute pop songs, honoring the individual hooks, over the many digressions (which can feel pointless in the short-attention-span era, but some of which are quite solacing and vaguely pastoral). Paradoxically, "A Venture" might have done with more jam bandy/jazz improvisations/explorations. "Perpetual Change" is good, too and "A Clap" the only real sub-par cut. The net-effect here is that this probably hit the accessibility/quality balance better than any other prog record. Holds up better too, than many of its proggy brethren.

I was surprised by how much I liked this! I usually zone out during prog rock, but this album demanded more attention from me, in a good way. Each song was creative and distinctive, while still being catchy. I could see myself really sinking into this on repeat listens. I think my creative writing teacher in high school (who I adored) really liked Yes. I have a vague memory of him playing a song for us in class once. Maybe it was one of these? I'll choose to believe it was, and that this is a neat little full-circle moment. 4 stars.

Wow, these blokes were ahead of their time. Really great music. Start to finish, I can't pick a favorite. 5 on the music, 4 on vocals, brings it to a 4.5 rounded down to a 4.

I was so glad to see Yes on this list. Yes are truly a musician's band. One of those bands that I really liked upon first hearing them. So much of what they do is so creative and well thought out. I always listen out for what Chris Squire is doing on bass and of course Bill Bruford is a beast. Jon Anderson's voice sounds great. These guys always keep it interesting.

Kannte ich vorher nicht Bissl wie Beatles aber viel psychedelischere Nummern, will ich mir nochmals anhören

I actually listened to this a few times because I can't decide on it. I enjoyed it but nothing really stands out. It is a hesitant 4/5.

3.5 stars. Need to relisten, though.

Pleasant music

The guitar puts you in a spell, however the last leg of the album is a bit on the weaker side

Love me some rocky, bipolar, prog rock. Sounds like a combination between Queen and King Crimson. Fav Songs: I've Seen All Good People, Starship Trooper

Cool to hear some Yes. I love a couple of their songs, so it was nice to hear more. Distinct sound. Standouts: Yours Is No Disgrace, I’ve Seen All Good People…, A Venture, and Perpetual Change.

Really enjoyed this album. Killer harmonies and fantastic instrumentals. 4/5

70/100. A good, decent rock album. It has some nice riffs, but nothing particularly extraordinary.

Have this album and like it (4)

I don't know why progressive rock feels so associated with fantasy, but it totally does. "The Clap" was super sick. I liked all the songs. I didn't know this about myself a year ago, but I just like prog rock. I like hearing twenty different instruments and lyrics about wizards. 8/10

I’m a pretty big consumer of classic rock. I’m a millennial and love the music of my generation (and today’s new music), but I’ve always been fascinated with music from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, especially rock music. I also love prog rock, especially Pink Floyd (if they count) and some newer bands. So with that context, it’s surprising that this is the first time I’ve listened to a Yes album. I’m not sure why I’ve avoided them, it wasn’t intentional. I’ve had in mind to do a deep dive into Yes because they’re probably one of the best known bands whose catalog I haven’t explored. I’m glad they’ve shown up here. The Yes Album is fantastic and a great introduction to the band for me. Yours Is No Disgrace is a great opener, and a great introduction to the sound of the album. Starship Troopers is a banger. I’ve Seen All Good People is a song I’ve heard many times and had no idea it was by Yes. The only blemish to me is The Clap, which isn’t a bad song by any means, but the live track is a weird and jarring inclusion for the flow of the album for me. I look forward to exploring more from the band.

actually quite nice on a relisten

If you want some prog rock, this album is for you. A fun vibe, but I would need to be in the right kind of mood for it

A ok album. Its lyrics were alright, but didnt exactly stand out. The music was alright, but also didnt really stand out. its about the most average album in my opinion.

Really enjoyed this album, a sort of folk/rock sound that is reminiscent of my mums favourite Paul Simon. Enjoyed the longer songs, I’ve seen all good people was a favourite.

Genuinely really enjoyed it - not usually a big prog guy but the vibe here was great. Nice variation and interesting to listen to. Would listen to more.

I love Yes for some reason. Maybe Roundabout and Jojo made me love them, but I dunno they're great for classic rock. No bad songs yet

Wicked prog rock album. Great listen experience with some solid performances from the bad. I can see why the anniversary album as so long haha.

Totally cool. Good walking around music. I dig it

Pre-listening thoughts: Yes album #2 and the Thanksgiving album! Yes is okay but prog rock in general just kinda drags on for too long. Predicting this will be a 3. Post/during listening thoughts: this is very Yes. Long songs that move through different acts before I still realize we are on the same song. The Clap reminds me a lot of Jefferson Airplane’s Embryonic Journey. Yes and Genesis are the prog rock bands that have ALMOST changed my mind about prog rock. It doesn’t have to be aimless. It can be very intentional and very musically interesting. It can have structure that takes you on a journey that leads somewhere. This album kind of rocks. 7.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: maybe? Fav tracks: despite their lengths I kind of loved Starship Trooper and Yours is No Disgrace, also I’ve Seen All Good People and Perpetual Change Least fav tracks: none really

Not as terrible as other prog rock albums I’ve heard on here maybe because the bass parts were prominent

This was their best album. The hits were great. Some of the filler stuff I wasn’t crazy about.

Classic Yes prog rock

85% Best: Yours Is No Disgrace; Starship Trooper; I've Seen All Good People Must-Hear? Sure

Прикольная группа, задает хорошее настроение!

I've never really considered listening to a Yes album start to finish. To be honest, I never really considered them much at all. But this was a pleasant little surprise. I really enjoyed it a lot. I know some are turned off by the length of the songs, but as a jam band fan, I love the longer songs with the pure instrumental interludes. Will definitely go into regular rotation. 4/5

Start is good, gets repetitive.

Sort of felt like a blend of Fleet Foxes, Crosby/Stills/Nash, and the Grateful Dead with a little Phish thrown in. Great instrumental work throughout. The lyrics generally didn't capture me, but this was a fun album to listen to overall.

This list is so jam packed full of really shitty psychedelic rock albums of this era that sometimes I almost forget that there are some good ones. And boy is this one great, just a bagner album from start to finish.

Intro track makes me feel like i'm driving a 69 Pontiac to a drug deal and i'm about to get shot up in a heroin deal gone wrong. Guitar work in Clap is super fucking solid. Great audio mixing on Perpetual Change. Overall it's a pretty tight album. I can tell there's some good musicianship and production put into it even if it's not something I would listen to on my own.

The notability of this inclusion is understandable, as this album literally saved the band's career and defined their sound they'd be refining further on their universally acclaimed albums such as Close to the Edge and the follow-up to this record, Fragile. As for the music itself, cool prog :)

Classic Prog Rock

An enjoyable classic rock album. Interesting melodies, good vocals. I think this album will be great as background music for studying/work

This is when Yes became the band they are known as. Long, multi-part epic songs, filled with moments of technical display of every member. This alone could be a recipe for a really boring wankfest. Thankfully the songs are all pretty great, and band would get even better right after this. Key tracks: Yours Is No Disgrace Starship Trooper I've Seen All Good People Perpetual Change

A god 'ol lie in the dark and just listen album.... "I've Seen All Good People" is one of my favorite yes tracks

Fav: Yours Is No Disgrace Least Fav: The Clap It’s a Yes from me

i like yes for their rock opera vibes. i hadn’t heard this album before but it was good! the clap was my favorite, that was the instrumental guitar one (not gonorrhea)

Yea this was solid. Groovy. I can’t really remember my specific thoughts because it was like 3 days ago

The first part of "I've seen all good people" is where it's at.

This is a solid, early prog-rock album. I don't think it's the best of the genre, but it definitely helped lead the way. My biggest problem with Yes is the singer's voice. He always sounds strained and forced. Best Songs: I've Seen All Good People, Perpetual Change Worst Songs: NA

Yes sort of transcends prog rock here, on what might be the best prog rock album. Put another way, they were the pop-vibiest of all the major prog acts (so maybe not really all that prog). But they are certainly artier than most of their arena rock brethren – so call them liminal (they'd probably like that). One has always dug Anderson's singing, too. “Seen All Good People” and “Yours Is No Disgrace” and “Starship Trooper” are all excellent would work for any band in any genre really, even if they're slightly on the loopier side for straight-up rock. At any rate, whatever you call it, this holds up well.

Day282 - this is a top tier prof rock album

I liked this one better compared to "Fragile". It felt a lot more creative and I really enjoyed some of the deep cuts on this one. The Clap feels like such an odd addition, but it's also kind of my favorite song, there's just something cool about it. Favorites were The Clap and I've Seen All Good People.

Early 70s rock. Amazing guitars. Harmonies. Sounds like an inspiration for Queen and many bands like them. Progressive rock. Very multi-layered. Loads of synths. A really good time. Great use of an organ. Insanely long songs, but they flow well and are very enjoyable.

I’m familiar with Yes and a lot of their big singles. This album has a couple and is a great proggy romp through a number of genres.

Dat bass. Not my favourite Yes album, I think it is a bit inconsistent at times. But when it hits, it hits! Yours Is No Disgrace, such a great opener. The lengthier tracks allow them to develop themes and actually come back to them, feeling like they are actually more cohesive pieces than the shorter counterparts. Squire's bass lines are magnificent. Some great catchy bits here.

not my thing, but well executed for sure

Clearly a great and complex album. Could do with listening to it a hundred more times to properly appreciate it.

I was excited to get another Yes album after being so pleasantly surprised by Close to the Edge, and I ended up liking this one even more. Not a perfect album (there’s a random live track in the middle of it - not sure I’ve ever seen that), but I really enjoyed this. So dynamic and full of unexpected twists and turns. The acoustic guitar in the quieter moments of I’ve Seen All Good People sounds amazing. The production is so ambitious and occasionally goofy (in an endearing, early 70’s way). Proud to admit I’m a full on Yes fan at this point. 4/5 Highlights: Yours Is No Disgrace Starship Trooper I’ve Seen All Good People

Hard to go wrong with Yes, and this is proof why.

Cool Album Standout songs: Yours in no Disgrace Starship Trooper

Classic prog rock and a really good album.

A cool and refreshing English Prog Rock album. They kind of like the British version of Rush - but not as exciting. This was good, though. I enjoyed it. The tracks "Starship Trooper," and "All Good People" elevate this album from a decent 3 to a solid 4 rating.

Highlights: Starship Trooper I've Seen All Good People This was not the Yes album I expected, Fragile has the more recognizable hits, but maybe it will come up later. That said, I am glad to come across Yes on this journey. They are too often overshadowed by bigger names in the classic rock/prog rock pantheon, so I'll take the opportunity to give them their flowers. In true prog rock fashion this album has only a few songs, but what they lack in number, they make up for in length and depth. The Yes Album is clearly not lacking in ambition when it comes to pushing the boundaries of pop song structure, but this ambition is balanced by a good sense of what makes a song catchy and listenable. You can put this album on in the background, and it will comfortably lay back and provide a spacey/psychedelic atmosphere. But you can also sit down and take your time with it, and entrance yourself with the variety of overlapping rhythms. Or admire the crisp production and virtuosic musicianship. I always appreciate music that rewards the listener who pays closer attention to it. What holds this back from five stars for me is that I can think of several other albums from this genre that I enjoy more. But still, very good, would recommend to a friend.

YES GOOD PROG ROCK (i think i havent listened to this yet) they made that one song from jojo and i like that song a lot love how silly symphonic prog sounds. i've never listened to symphonic prog album that doesn't sound like 16-bit era video game music

Top Yes

I previously said that yes is a band exclusively for fathers and I do not wish to change my statement, however this album really excited me!

Peak Yes. Everybody hitting on all cylinders. Prog excess and overweening pop triviality unimaginable at this point. Personally, arrived in my life as adolescence was beginning and I could properly obsess over it. Pure delight. Pure endless delight.

I've enjoyed this album since my youth. I love Steve Howe's guitar playing

As I mentioned earlier, I had given up on Yes after a little too much exposure in the early '90s. It was all a bit too much Jon Anderson for me and I snapped. Listening to this reminded me why I liked the band in the first place. There's just a lot of great music on here — the bass tone is just plain raunchy, great drumming and keyboards and guitar and vocals. The songs are excellent and weird and non-linear. I'm not exactly ready to restock my record collection, but I ain't no Yes hater.

Man, I haven't listened to this in decades. It's still fun. Yes would get better on the next two albums, but this one has a slew of classics on it. And my god, but Squire, Bruford, and Howe are such monster players it's ridiculous. Great stuff, but just shy of a 5 in my book.

Really enjoyed the instrumentals on this one. 4* Highlights: I've seen all good people, starship trooper, yours is no disgrace

This was pretty good, as it turns out I’m kind of a Yes guy. This wasn’t as good in my HO as Fragile, not as many catchy tunes, but Seen All Good People is pretty great.

Yes? More like FUCK YEAH.

Really good album with some iconic tunes. Play it loud!

The Yes Album from 1971 is a quintessential English prog rock album. It has intensity, it has build, it has relief from the “hard rock” moments in little fingerpicking interludes. It’s not as if the songs just went on forever; really, there were 3 or 4 different songs within each track. Some of them melded, and some were extremely distinct. The instrumentation in this album, and its use of the stereo effect to layer sounds on top of one another was pretty exciting (Perpetual Change, the last track, best demonstrates this layering effect). I love an album that breaks with the traditional mode of composing and arranging—there are clear jazz-infused elements to the structure of these songs, just like many prog rock albums—but they also encompassed blues, folk, and funk. The arrangements reminded me of King Crimson, and the vocal harmonies sounded like they were inspired by Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Ahh the prog glory of Yes. It was a guy named Paul down the hall from me in university who learned that I loved Rush and thought, well then you might like Yes. And boy was he right. When I heard their cover of the WEST SIDE STORY broadway standard "Something's Coming" that was on the flip side of their 1968 debut single "Sweetness", I knew that something wasn't just coming, something cool had already arrived and some twenty something years later I had been missing out. While this album is not my favorite of theirs, I still love "Yours Is No Disgrace" and "I've Seen All Good People: A. Your Move, B. All Good People". The rest are solid recordings, performances, and arrangements, but "I've Seen All Good People" in particular is transcendent, and takes me to those exciting years when music was vital and a musical adventure awaited in every new person and place met. Besides who can't dig a band who regularly writes epic songs adapted from books like STARSHIP TROOPERS by Robert Heinlein and THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J.R.R. Tolkien, and has the good taste to get Roger Dean to paint your later album covers? Their no RUSH, but who is?

Utterly excellent! Not a 5/5 goosebump inducing thing, but very fun and I enjoyed waaaay more than expected!

Great album

Really melodic with some great harmonies and cool multi-section songs. Kinda dorky in that distinctly prog-rock way, but quite enjoyable. Best song: Yours is No Disgrace

The question: should you listen to this album? The answer: Yes

Хороший альбом. Классический прог рок. Экстра песни в делюкс версии - супэр. Лучшая песня - Starship Trooper.

Haven’t heard this group in a long time. Really enjoyed this; liked it very much.

Prog! Prog! Prog! Yes! Yes! Yes! This, ‘Close To The Edge’ and ‘Fragile’, are all great albums. All are slightly different, but they are all super consistent. This one is probably not as self-indulgent as their other two albums on the list, but really, I like them all equally and it’s hard to pick a favourite.

Really good.

I rather enjoyed that a lot more than I expected. Need a few more listens to be honest but I think this one’s a 4 for me.

Really enjoyed this. Mildly reflective of A Night At The Opera for me, not musically but in terms of the idea of a whole show within an album

This sounded very jam bandy and Doorsy which I normally wouldn't like. But there were some very tasty licks throughout and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Feel like this is probably a very strong 3*, but I'm rounding up. 3.5/5

Interesting guitar work, vocal harmonies, and use of stereo sound

You can hear how they built off of Psychedelic rock and tried to push it forward. This music doesn’t just sound good but it feels good as well. Easy listen, even easier 4 star album.

I think I might be a prog rock fan. The only reason this isn't a 5 is because we did King Crimson the other day and that was even better.

Not bad at all! The bass lines matches well with de strong bass drums. What a powerful and tuned vocal by mister Jon Anderson.

Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

So three consecutive Yes albums from this era, but I'm still so sad not to have 90125, which gave them a powerful 80s rebirth. Oh well, what can I say, these have all been so good! Especially when prog rock can bore me so much. Well done!

Bin überrascht wie gut ich dieses Album finde. ****

Say “yes” to Yes. I know, it’s cheesy, but I enjoyed the meandering journey of these songs. Better than rap any day.

Yes is one of those bands that I appreciate more than I enjoy. They’re talented musicians and compose interesting music. This album is excellent from beginning to end. I just wish I enjoyed it more.

Psychedelic rock is kinda hit or miss for me but I liked this one. The lyrics weren’t completely nonsensical drivel and the instruments sounded really nice. Loved the guitar and the drums. I didn’t mind the length because so much of it was instrumental bits and not stupid lyrics repeating over and over. Would listen to again.

Way better than later Yes stuff, this is them at the point of getting their shizz together and before either disappearing up their own arseholes or completely reinventing themselves.

Prog is such a hit or miss for me. Sometimes it totally misses, but when it hits its fucking amazing. Loved this one, incredible from start to finish. Cant give it a 5 but its close

That was actually very nice. I didn’t know yes that good but will listen to this again.

Is it great? Yes.

Underrated

Now that was some noodlin. More noodles than Wagamama.

I liked this album. It was high energy from the beginning and even it's longest songs didn't feel like they dragged. The banjo interludes took me out of the experience a bit, but it still made for a solid album.

tight harmonies, driving bassline is almost every song, and oh man that Hammond Organ - such a gorgeous instrument and why oh why are they $4000 But all in all, I really enjoy Yes as a band. This album is a little short but its good and All Good People is such a fun song.

A few good jams, cool vibes, pretty good stuff. Fav Tracks Starship Trooper A Venture Light 7/10

The definition of prog rock. If the songs were more memorable this would be a 5

8.5/10 Gran disco progresivo de Yes de sus inicios, marcado por la originalidad de sus composiciones. Mejor tema: Yours is no disgrace

That was a nice album. Loved the harmonies and mixes of all the genres. The songs were a tad long, but I never grew tired of them because they were always evolving and changing into something different and consistently interesting. Honestly really enjoyed this. 4/5

4.5, very very good album, "yours is no disgrace" and "ive seen all people" are both incredible, with every other track also being very good

LOVE, this sum magazine shit but 10 years earlier. slappss. 8.5/10

Ok this was a solid listen for the most part. I enjoyed just about everything, got a little tired of hearing hideaway but other than that very good stuff. No doubt the instrumentals bring everything to life on this album, kind of overshadowing the vocals to an extent (in my opinion ofc). Not to say the vocals were bad, I enjoyed that aspect as well, especially on Yours is No Disgrace which is arguably my favorite track. Very short LP which kind of fractures the score a bit, I would've liked to hear a bit more. Overall great intro, great outro. Can't complain, I would come back to this for sure.

4/5 Not Yes' best album, but it still has Starship Trooper and I've seen all good people.

I enjoyed this quite a lot, but there were odd questionable bits through out that keep this from being a five. Overall a good early prog album.

Great album with the best musicians. All instruments are played to perfection. Only issue is that the songs aren't as memorable for me.

I was pleasantly surprised - not as proggy as I expected it to be. Happy to finally listen to a full album from this band.

A good album for prog newbies to grind their teeth to. Which is fine by me because I'm actually a newbie.

I love the vocal harmonies and Chris Squire's bass lines. The acoustic guitar lines are great. It's much more accessible than some of theirs and their contemporaries really proggy, out there stuff. Bumping it an extra star for that instant karma.

Yes has always been a great band to mellow out to and enjoy.

It's a good Yes Release but I just wasn't all about it. I would have taken Fragile or Close to the Edge and would have been blown away. One of their less stronger releases but that's ok

Bizarre but respectable

Yes has a couple really great tracks on this album. Other than that I can’t recall too much from it but it is pretty easy to listen to. Rounding up.

Wasn't super familiar with Yes before this. I mainly knew them as "the band that did the outro for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure." I've always enjoyed the song Roundabout and meant to actually get into their discography. This was a great listen imo. 8/10 Would I listen again? Yes (get it? like the name of the band?)

I'm really starting to like Yes more and more. They have more focus on the music and instrumentation rather than the lyrics on the whole. Plus nice harmonies and things.

Often misunderstood, always duplicated

Yes, this is totally different than the famous Yes album from the 80s. Yes, I know the one from the 80s, and Yes, I loved it. Yes, I also like this one. Yes.

I'm not as familiar on this one as The Fragile, but it's tight.

I shamelessly love this band, but this is not an album I have a lot of experience with. Previous albums were schizophrenic; jumping from one sound to another as tracks change. Here, the band seems to have a clearer idea of direction. The prog is still front and center, the rock is undeniable, but gone are the classical compositions that felt so out of place on earlier releases. This is Yes defining what will make them so unique but instantly recognizable going forward. Worth noting that the dynamic range on the vinyl rip I listened to was far beyond any modern recording I've ever heard. Truly phenomenal range.

This was great. Yours Is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper, and I've Seen All Good People, all really enjoyable and varied songs with a lot of what I love in their other work. Close to the Edge remains my favourite album though.

Love a good prog rock album! And appreciate getting to spend the day with some of the godfathers of the genre. This is a great album, lots of fun twists and turns. And "I've Seen All Good People" is so anthemic!

Fairy enjoyable, but the songs are, for the most part, really long, but they’re not as engaging as those on Fragile. It’s a good album, but I wouldn’t mind if it was cut for some other prog album from a new band.

Ich bin kein großer yes-fan, aber dieses Album hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Abwechslungsreiche Gitarren Stile, schöne Melodien und eine tolle Stimme. Ein in jeder Hinsicht gelungenes Album.

Lovely bit of prog awesomeness

Not unpleasant dad rock. Really quite liked it. Not that prog?

This album came up right around another band that I thought kinda sounded like Yes but without the keys. And yeah, that's not as good. Gonna keep this one short, but it's a nice album that helps reinforce that I like some keys in my rock. Favorite track "I've seen all good people" 4/5

The album was a nice journey.

Liked it. 4

Really great prog rock. Very easy to listen to.

Prog rock is a very interesting category of music. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This album works. The melodies are nice, the instrumentals are unique and the music is enjoyable. Not sure how much I will explore this artist but this was a worthwhile album to listen to.

Kind of surprised with this one, I think I came into it thinking it was going to be all the same by the end, but I've found myself putting it on a couple of times since I listened. Maybe feeling will change with time, but super solid album.

I was surprised I liked this album so much, as I have heard Yes before, and I always felt they got a little too silly with their proggy-ness, similar to ELP. However, I thought this album had a lot of good pop-type hooks, and the music was fun and interesting. I will definitely listen to this album again, and it makes me want to listen to more Yes to see if the stuff I heard before was maybe just a certain era of their career (perhaps with different personnel).

Net niet zo goed als Pink Floyd maar wel lekker prog hoor

....to be continued Lekker albumpie hoor, deze is wat weer mijn smaak The Clap is erg knap gespeeld

Solid Yes album, not best

I would have bought this album back in 1971 just for the song ‘I’ve seen all good people’.

Pretty dang good, nice prog.

Previously rated: Fragile (5/5) ********************* Not quite as epic as Fragile, but there is some great stuff here. Love the bass and drums. Starship Trooper is the one track that dragged a bit too long. Standout tracks: Yours Is No Disgrace and I've Seen All Good People.

Yes , yes. 4/5. Easygoing and interesting prog rock.

Another one where I enjoyed the album as a whole but wouldn't listen to any of the songs individually

Pretty good. My favourites were Yours is No Trouble and I’ve seen all good people.

Better than I thought. "The Clap" is a straight up banger.

There's a lot going on during the playtime of The Yes Album. Tracks pivot constantly, changing tempo and style on a dime, and often include multiple movements. One song is a live recording of bluegrass/folk/ragtime acoustic guitar piece, while others are fledgling prog rock. Yes's genre is hard to pin down, as they drift from classic rock to ragtime, singer/songwriter acoustic to prog rock, featuring some pretty incredible guitar and bass jams. Pretty eclectic work, but the band's musicianship is undeniably good and their abrupt transitions lend to the master working of the record. A super enjoyable ride, especially as you let go of understanding and just appreciate the music. Stand out tracks include "Yours Is No Disgrace", "The Clap", and "I've Seen All Good People".

"The Yes Album" is the third studio album by English progressive rock band Yes. It is the first to feature guitarist Steve Howe replacing Peter Banks and the last one with keyboardist Tony Kaye until "90125." It is also their first album with all original material. The music expanded incorporating additional styles including jazz piano, folk and acoustic music but keeping their three-part harmony vocals, Chris Squire's melodic bass and Bill Bruford's spacious drumming. Lead singer Jon Anderson rounds out the crew. This album was their commercial breakthrough reaching #4 in the UK and #40 in the US. It was also critically well received. Fast guitar slashes, a plunging bass and an organ background begin "Yours is No Disgrace." Kaye's organ and Howe's guitar really shine here. Layered music. Vocal harmonies as Anderson sings an anti-war song. The band really let's their prog out in "Starship Trooper." It's a three part song that takes you on a journey. In the first part "Life Seeker," Anderson sings about Motther Earth and guardian angels. A start-stop pace in this section. The second part "Disillusion" has guitar finger-picking and vocal harmonies with Squire in the lead. "Würm" ends it with a Howe guitar solo. Everyone has heard the tremendous a capella start to "I've Seen All Good People." Another song with parts. The first part "Your Move" has Howe playing a Portuguese guitar and a section with two recorders. Anderson comparing chess pieces and moves to a relationship. This might be their their most "pop" song. The song ends with more traditional rock-out in the "All Good People" part. The last song "Perpetual Change" takes us on a even more complex ride than "Starship Trooper." There's time changes. Stops and starts. Polyrhytmic sections. Organ and guitar solos. A grand finale indeed. This a very good album both appreciating the technical expertise and just general songcraft. The band effectively takes off in all directions with different lead instruments and solos but when they want to come together, they can really rock. This album and style might exhaust some people but I find them to be my favorite of the prog rock groups when they sound like this. This is a must-listen album as are their next two albums, "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge."

Classic guitar album

An early "prog rock" album that does have a few hits. Like most things prog rock, it's a self-indulgent, but with a high degree of technical ability. I kinda like prog rock.

Sort of album you really have to listen to multiple times. Second listen immediately better and more colourful than the first. Opener has a great Queen-esque feel that feels like synth before synth Love the drums! Especially on Starship Trooper where the drummer sort of floats in and out of the beat I haven’t even properly read the lyrics but I bet they’re taking inspiration from King Crimson. Has that biographical feel. Doesn’t seem like it would’ve reinvented the wheel at the time… more research for me to do!

It went by so quickly. Very melodic, verging in hypnotic sounds at some points. Really enjoyed it.

Oh no is my future liking prog rock

Track 1 “yours is no disgrace” comes out swinging and shows the quality musicians that the Yes guys are. Howe and Squire stand out to me on guitar and bass (great bass tone!), but keys, drums, and vocals/harmonies are all quality. This is all pretty classic prog rock - strong musicianship, bending songwriting, solid arrangements. But Why do they need to sing so high all the time?

nice album, more approachable and a bit more enjoyable than close to the edge for me. tracks 3 and 4 are the clear highlights. the clap and a venture couldve been great if they developed more but as of now they are a bit disappointing. 7/10

The organ on this album sounds exactly like the rock organ in GarageBand

Holy fuck, I think Yes influence my favorite band of all time, Radiohead. This was significantly better than I expected. Folky, Prog rock that’s very accessible. It is almost laughably 70s though 8.2/10

Not quite Fragile

Rating: 8/10 Great album overall. The songwriting was consistently great, each track takes you on a journey. The incorporation of classical guitar and keyboard was done exceptionally well. There were also a lot of strong bass and guitar riffs throughout and plenty of catchy melodies. I did not like the singing that much or some of the ideas but this album is great most of the time. Favorite songs: Yours Is No Disgrace, The Clap, Starship Trooper, I've Seen All Good People. Worst song: The Venture.

YEEEEEES

I love early Yes. Sonically this album has a lot of grit and Chris Squire's bass tone is out of this world. The hits are the hits, the only 'filler' is really The Clap. Perpetual Change is a great closer. Great album all around.

ну, это было весело! Я узнал только одну песню на альбоме, но их звучание безошибочно. Like Crosby, Stills, and Nash, but without all the doobie and whatnot. :-)

Spent years thinking that Roundabout was the only good Yes song. This album has proved me wrong

OMG my jr high self would be so happy to listen to Yes. And I guess I am too!

Delightful 4/5

I love progressive rock and this album should theoretically be among my favorite albums ever, still, I could never really got into their music somehow. 'The Yes Album' has really great musicianship, and it's a good album, it's just perhaps not as catchy or memorable that some others I love more in this genre (for example, Genesis albums).

Classic Yes one of the original Progressive Rock bands

I was already familiar with this album. It's very good. I've Seen All Good People is possibly the biggest song of their entire career, and Yours Is No Disgrace is excellent as well.

Good album, a couple great hits and a couple nice deep tracks.

Oh hey, my third-favorite Yes album! Probably the best of their work with Tony Kaye. We've got Steve Howe on the record before he started going all crazy with his lame-ass solos like he would in later years. Overall a very stripped-back kind of album, especially compared to later works, but there's a real nice folk-ish quality to a lot of these songs that combine prog rock ideas without all the overblown theatrics. One weak song, which I still like, is A Venture, which is honestly just unremarkable, but with so few songs it is definitely a bit of an odd spot.

It was good

Prog rock genius and Rush influencer. Love the instrumental skills.

Had 'Yes' here on the list before and then I was less than impressed. This was actually not that bad though! It had a quite consistent quality throughout the album that I would put somewhere in the high-mid spectrum. I especially enjoyed the 'Perpetual Change' song, which had a pretty cool melody and reminded me a bit of the rockier Supertramp songs. I think some of the songs could have benefitted from being a bit shorter. Still, going to go out on a limb and give this a weak 4!

Solid prog rock.

Classic proggy stuff here. I never got into Yes until I heard 90125 as a teen. When I went back through their catalog, this was the one with which I connected best. Just good vibes all around here. Fun to revisit it, since it's not really in my wheelhouse these days. Not "unexpected" bangers, since I was familiar with this. But you can't go wrong with "All Good People."

4/5. I really enjoyed this upbeat Prog Rock album from Yes. I must give my hat to the bassist as he was clearly the star of the album

I like Roundabout better. And yes, that is a Jojo reference.

Program rock eargasm. Giving it a 4 as it's my second favorite YES album.

Solid album! This was great to listen to- very easy listening

Solid prog. Yours Is No Disgrace and Starship Trooper are bangers. I've Seen All Good People was used very nicely in season five of Fargo. The last two tracks aren't as strong. Still, a worthwhile addition to the book.

Complicated and beautiful.

Nice guitar intro I'm kinda liking the vibe, nice chill out and easy listening I'd easily listen to this again, nice vibe Really enjoyed this album

Really solid album. Wasn't at all what I was expecting and a solid early prog rock album

Flawless production. Surprisingly complex. Not an album to listen to the singles, but a beautiful album experience.

Ok, I found this to be really enjoyable but I forgot to write down my notes immediately after so I can't tell you why.

Yes is a band that I had never made time for. This was a mistake. After listening to this record twice, I listened to 4 other albums by them on the same day. I must not have been in the right frame of mind all those times in the past when I had false starts.

good 70s music

So innovative! Really cool album. I was also impressed with the recording quality. You do eventually get a little tired of 9 minute songs, but they're not very repetitive so it's not bad.

How are all of these songs so good?

I totally dig this style of progressive British rock. All Good People gets the radio play and attention, and for good reason because it is a quality track, but there isn't a bad track on this album and I have a fondness for Yours is No Disgrace.

Some slappers on here

First and last songs are the best. Enjoyable but A Venture could have been taken off and it would have been even better.

Not as good as Fragile but still solid prog rock.

Yes!!! Classic prog rock album that's a total blast to listen to. Already pretty familiar with Yes' early catalogue so this wasn't entirely new but I'm interested to see what the other reviews are saying! Always funny to hear people critique a genre you're very familiar with fresh ears. I'm expecting lots of video game or Mario comparisons, which aren't totally wrong. I've always thought those old games must have been inspired by prog just by the fact although they are old - they still came after albums like this one.

Not bad

Unique, still sounds great.

Couple Good Songs

I have a soft spot for prog rock, and even though it would be heavy rotation on the classic rock stations of my youth, I silly enjoy "All Good People". I think it's interesting to include their live folk track on this album, but it made sense to me. We hear a lot of heavy folk instrumentation on many of these songs, and it's nice to hear that they have live chops for the same.

One of the first live bands I saw played most of this album. Still sounds great

How about no

I can't listen to "Your Move" without singing "Semi-Charmed Life" over the end part.

Great album. Terrible stereo mix.

From a pure technical standpoint, this is instrumentally just so ahead of its time for me (either that or I don’t know shit about ‘60s rock) that whatever sort of mesmerizing feeling it gave me throughout, it ultimately just left me impressed, across the board, except for A Venture. I struggle to give it a full 5/5 but it’s absolutely a 4.5, and I think it’s my favorite album so far.

Ekki algjörlega generic rock eins og ég heyri það. Sum lög með alveg sturlaða production. Movie!

A performance; harmonies across stereo space, guitar solos, a deeply 70s prog rock album.

Really enjoyed the rock and roll instrumentals, even made it onto a playlist

I think this is the third Yes album on the list that I've gotten, and of the three, this was the easiest one for me to get into. I really liked this one, and I definitely want to listen to it again.

4.3 - “Yours is No Disgrace” opens this remarkable record like a diesel engine - it’s loud and a little clunky, but powerful and finely tuned. Rarely can an instrumental solo on acoustic guitar capture my attention, but “Clap” has that distinction - superb. “Starship Trooper” and “I’ve Seen All Good People” are both bangers as well. I’ll add this to my growing list of favorite prog-rock albums!

Yes’ first record featuring Steve Howe. What an addition that was. Masterful guitar playing throughout. In my opinion, this type of prog was best, right before it got real wankery.

The most prog out of everything ever. A bewildering array of styles and sounds, but always overblown to the point of nonsense. I still liked it though!

Decent

The guitarwork is the best part in my opinion. Sometimes it gives me this medieval feel and I love that. I thought the rhythm changed a bit too often in Perpetual Change (though that was probably the point) but the second half of the song was really good.

Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. The development in the longer songs is really interesting.

it’s no Close to the Edge but it’s still Yes at some of their best

great harmonies, tracks are long and repetitive but pleasant

prog rocks just fun

Does it have a group of freakishly good musicians? Yes. Does it have eccentric blends of folk, blues and nerd-rock? Yes. Does it make me feel like a warlock? Yes. Does it absolutely rip? YES

Much better than I remembered Yes. I like the jade and psychedelic influence.

I didn‘t even know that YES were a (almost, at least) classic 70ies rockband, I like! :-)

1. Świetna gitarka! 2. Czuję się jakbym miała konia, banjoo i siedziała gdzieś na amerykańskim rancho 3. Dobra nuta 4. Organy robia robote Spójna elegancka płyta z piękna instrumentalna. 4.5 ! :) bardzo długie utwory

I enjoyed it. It had some fun songs with a good mix of rock and synth.

"I've seen good people" is the most known song. Thought this was pretty good; easy listen. 8/10.

The first Yes album to feature the inimitable Steve Howe. This album is still building towards the excellency of their next two (which I admittedly have a bias towards), but it’s teeming with classics all the same. In fact, most of the album consists of classic tracks! While it doesn’t reach quite the same heights, this and their two following albums from a trilogy that provided, and still provides, a gold standard for what prog rock can achieve

Decent skiva önskar de sku använda sina jätteoriginella musiker för att laga poplåtar men det här var väl helt okay

i’ve seen all good people kind of like the styx

This album was a good listen. Really great musicianship.

This is a very good album, I would give it a 5 but I used to listen to the Fragile album A LOT and that’s a masterpiece…so if thats a 5 this one falls a little below. But just like Fragile this these albums are always great to just put them on and enjoy! Also, always love the concept of songs in parts & always from the 3 min radio friendly format. Let the song develop and go different places!

A solid rock album! I really liked the flow of all the songs. I don't really have much to say except it was really enjoyable!

doesn't live up to close to the edge but its cool

Very solid album. Not the best that Yes has to offer, but good. Starship Trooper may be my favorite Yes song--pretty emblematic of their sound. If you don't like that one, you probably won't like them.

оч интересно и с альтушным вайбом

Not my favourite Yes album by a mile (Close to the Edge is a triumph) but it still has the signature style it's true. I can understand that many people don't like this genre but Jon Anderson's vocals plus virtuoso performances all round show this is still Prog at it's best and not even the lack of Rick Wakeman spoils the proceedings.

I've Seen All Good People like this album

Quite fun, really enjoyed it other than the second song which is a real low point haha. Liked it but don't think I'll come back to it soon

Pretty good

I do enjoy the musicianship on here the rock and roll based guitarwork on “when all good people” is something I really love more than I did when I was younger. It’s the lyrics that I just don’t really find interesting. Almost a 5

Pretty good! I quite enjoyed many of the songs, and even ended up adding a couple to my playlist.

Kind of sounds like Rush. Good groove

Progressive Rock album, in general, take a little longer to get into an enjoy for me. I've heard this album many times...but some of the songs just don't stick with me. It's really great, once you get into it. Just give it time and listen ... really listen. Standouts: I've Seen All Good People (Your Move, All Good People), Others: Starship Trooper, Yours is no Disgrace, Clap, A Venture. 3.75/5

"I've Seen All Good People" was my first exposure to Yes. That song made it on to mixtapes but I never really dug deeper. A little more stripped down version of Yes for the most part than I've been exposed to. They do a great job of dipping into different genres and making the whole album pretty cohesive but not repetitive.

A great progressive album. I’d like to think it is the perfect work to start digging on that type of music.

Enjoyed this one, nothing too crazy but an easy listen 8/10

Damn soulful, a really great album. Standouts are 'Cry Baby' and 'Mercedes Benz' (Women do be feelin' tho.)

A while ago I got to rate their next record Fragile. I gave it 3 stars. This record sounds more natural than Fragile. I like it better. I still don't like the singer's voice very much. Favorite song: Yours is no disgrace.

I really like Yes' sound. This album isn't as engaging for me as Fragile but it's still good.

Better than pink Floyd

Leuk album, was niet zo bekend met Yes behalve de hitjes. Volgens mij ook het eerste prog album in de lijst na 240 albums. Ga zeker meer Yes checken!

Who would’ve thought the clap could be so enjoyable. Album is a banger!

A coming of age album for a 70's rock icon

Prog spaceship

As much as I love prog music Yes is has always been a band I could just never fully get into. I enjoy listening to their music and exploring the many avenues their songs go down but I can never prioritize them over other bands of the same style I enjoy more. Every song on The Yes Album is pretty solid though featuring many pretty cool moments. Starship Troopers is always worth the time whenever I do get around to listening to it which if I'm being honest. Isn't very often.

pretty good psych

Very likable and progressive, but I'm not sure if I'd listen to this again.

Great album

This is friggin awesome gamers! 😎😎

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

No idea how I got it in my head that I don’t like Yes but I enjoyed nearly every minute of this

Good people 👍 live songs not as bonus tracks 👎

Lenge siden eg har hørt da. Da e et stykke fra Fragile, men litt Yes slår sjelden feil

A good prog rock album.

This is phenomenal. So much good on such a small album.

An incredible progressive rock album that never gets dull for me.

Har aldrig riktigt lyssnat på Yes tidigare men blev lyckligt överraskad! Bra igenom hela albumet. Inte en enda skip! Bästa låt: Starship Trooper
