An interesting one. Some good melodies and pretty tight production. Their sound is kind of overwhelming, but I think that’s the whole idea. Not my thing but not bad at all.
Fun and energetic. Reminded me of mgmt, but a bit more noisy. Turns out I listened to like half of these songs in my teenage years, completely forgot about this band
a few good MySpace profile song bangers on this
Pretty good
I used to really like this but listening back I wasn't that fussed.
Great album, haven't listened to this in years, sudden urge to buy a MicroKorg now.
I'd never heard of this, and it was kind of hit-or-miss. Some of it was enjoyable, some of it kind of boring/annoying.
Enjoyable listen, some songs I recognized, nothing amazing but worth a listen.
First time for me listening to this group, couldn't help but be repeatedly reminded of the Arctic Monkeys - not that this is necessarily a bad thing.
Never heard of Klaxons, but this was not unenjoyable. I don’t think anything on the record really jumped out at me as revelatory, and I probably won’t ever revisit this record, but it was decent. 3/5
man this was loud. Honestly just some good 2000's alt rock, nothing spectacular but still worth a listen
A buddy of mine was hella into this album back in the day so I’ve heard it a couple few times leading up to this. Always thought it was just fine! This listen didn’t change my mind. Shoutout to Devastating Dave the Turntable Slave
Fine but didn't leave much of an impression on me.
This was pretty fun. Kind of like the Kaiser Chiefs meets EDM.
I like it, but it's not essential. I remember one or two songs were played on the radio over here. The songs are alright. Production is tiring. Too compressed. Favorite song: totem on the timeline.
Not bad. ★★★
This was pretty good, actually. I dug it. I feel like I should give it another listen, though. Hey, to write a song after the Thomas Pynchon novel "Gravity's Rainbow" (don't say you've read it, everyone has SAID they have read it, but honestly a fraction of those people really have) is pretty bold. "Two Receivers" definitely has that "A View To A Kill" vibe. I never hated the Duran Duran song, so... there's that. It's right now at a 2.9 to a 3.1, but I think if i may listen to it again, I may like it even more. Top tracks: "Two Receivers," "As Above, So Below," "Totem On The Timeline"
Just felt like I was listening to the radio. Maybe this sound was a bit more interesting in the early 2000s but I highly doubt it.
New Rave was yet another genre invented to sell copies of the NME. Good mid-00s indie album though.
Didn't really hear the whole thing
Super interesting
I don't remember where I was in Chicago around the time this album came out (prolly Wicker Park, if I'm being honest), when someone handed by a CD single of "Golden Skans." I *hated* it, as I did a lot of the sort of dance-pop of the time. Listening to the album as a whole, I come away feeling somewhat differently. Some of the tracks, including "Golden Skans," are still just not by sound, but there's a greater depth and versatility here than I might have expected. I also think my tastes have changed to a decent degree and there are definitely some songs here that veer closer to the sort of dance-punk of DFA 1979 or later IDLES that I quite enjoyed.
Una mezcla de estilos que curiosamente ha funcionado bien a lo largo de la historia. Tiene algún tema que ya conocía. 5/10
Another middle of the road album - like most on this list. Very uninspiring stuff but it's not awful.
It started off really strong with "Two Receivers" then kinda went downhill from there. Still cool, but no longer in that 4-5 star tier.
So silly. I used to think this was brilliant but not so much now
It was ok. Didn't really stick with me in the end.
Pas un gros fan d'indie, c'pas mauvais mais c'pas extra non plus
Expected not much out of this album but it changed my mind. This was actually really decent with me even hearing Golden Skans before which is a 10/10 song. Songs like that I absolutely loved and this whole album was jam packed with them all sounding diverse and creative. There were lows in the album don’t get me wrong but they were like 5 or 6s and I reckon they were still good. I probably wouldn’t ever listen to it again but I’m glad I did overall I’m feeling an 7.9/10 3.9/5
Wall of trippy loops
Very fun worth a revisit!
Started off strong but slowly started to lose me. 3.5
This grew on me in a matter of minutes. Dug it.
Recently, I read a quote from a music critic who said that after spending half his life interviewing bands, he came to the conclusion that bands think about genre much less than critics do. He said they just play the music they want to play, and then people label it. That struck me as funny, but it makes sense. As a listener, I want to categorize and label. It’s part of how I wrap my brain around something new. But I think that artists, more often than not, just play whatever they feel like, which is usually some version of what they enjoy listening to. This album sounds like a mash-up of influences — punk, dance rock, post-punk, and prog rock are all swirling around in the mix here — but I get the impression that Klaxons weren’t thinking about genre when they made it. The style feels more instinctual than calculated, like everybody added a dash of what they like into the pot rather than going off a recipe. This is all a roundabout way to say that Klaxons have a cool, original style that sounds natural. The music doesn’t feel overthought. But it’s also polished and very well produced! They remind me a bit of early Arctic Monkeys. They have a similar style of danceable punk. (I just looked at the album credits and James Ford is a producer here. He’s produced so much of my favorite music in the last 10-20 years, including Arctic Monkeys starting with their second album.)
Fun, good tempo. All round solid indie album
Always in the shadow of that one Crystal Castles remix but a solid representation of a solid indie era
These guys know how to do an intro to a song, unfortunately nothing matched the level of the openings.
Aight
Genre: New Rave A more electronic take on the Dance-Rock/Punk coming out of England at the time. This album wasn’t bad, but I honestly think there are much better examples from this time period that they could’ve added. Makes me wish The Fratellis were somewhere in the book. There were some big musical highs, but some duds on the tracklist as well. An interesting listen, but not essential. 3/5
It's ok. It sounds a lot like Franz Ferdinand. If it was on in the background quietly I'd listen to it but it feels pretty derivative.
This is possibly my favorite era of music, so I really enjoyed this. They’ve been one of those ‘heard of but never heard’ bands, so it’s nice to hear them. Hope I remember to listen to this again.
started out okay but then dragged on. Sounded similar to a lot of the music coming out at that time. Not terrible, but not great. 3/5
Can’t tell if I like it or just nostalgic. But feels surprisingly complete as an art piece. Subject matter wyrder than I remembered: yes literary sci-fi but also magic and occult? It’s a genre album using tools of indie sleaze??
If it caught me in the right mood I would probably adore this thing. Not for me right now but I see it clicking someday.
I liked this one!
Not terrible, I guess I kind of enjoyed it. Probably won't listen again.
I had never heard of Klaxons before this. This record reminds me a lot of Foals, who I’ve listened to quite a lot and like. Given the timing of the release it’s likely Foals’ sound was pretty inspired by it. It’s an enjoyable, good sounding record that I didn’t really have any major takeaways from after a couple of listens.
If half-stars were an option, this is classic 2.5-star territory. I enjoyed it a little more than I thought (or feared) I would.
I’ve been teetering between scoring this a 1, 2, or 3 depending on the song - and sometimes even depending on the moment within a song. I’m going to be generous and give it a 3 for the moments I like, but I’m not at all sorry to see the end of this album.
I loved this when I was in my 20s.
I generally liked this; Golden Skans and It's Not Over Yet were standouts. A strong three
ok so its everyone's least favourite "00s british indie band" time.
Here we have my 666th album of the album project! Man... I really wanted that Iron Maiden album today. That would've been so funny. But like the idea of Snoop Dogg as album 420, it was never meant to be. Hell, I probably would've been somewhat okay with something laughably terrible today just for the irony of it being album 666. But no. Instead I have to get the 300th fucking British indie album on this list, because I guess there wasn't enough already! This Klaxons album is the definition of a 3/5. It has good elements, sure. Musically speaking, this album is certainly respectable. Songs like "Golden Skans" do have good ideas in their melodies and such to the point where I'd call most of the album good in that regard. You have some things that aren't bad or great. They just kind of do the job. This is where the singing and writing go. Those two elements are fine here. Not excellent, but not awful. The mixing is probably my least favorite part. It felt a bit loud at times. I'm not an expert at all, so take that with a grain of salt. Ultimately, this is one of those albums that I would say are good, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that I loved it or that it's a must-listen album at all. I'd understand if others liked this more than I did and I'd also understand if someone was seriously annoyed by this. As for me, I listened to it, had some fun, and now I'm going to move on with my life. 3/5.
Me gustaría conocer un poco más de esta banda. Bastante in the Zone la cosa. Nota: 3.2
Rating: 7/10 A pretty fun dance-punk album with some cool songwriting.
Crisp, energetic and perfectly fine, if not great. One thinks "new rave" is accurate enough, but their literary interests seems slightly counter to the party vibe, no? Not fully convinced, however, that this is actually a sci-fi concept album. And I'm not sure it would matter if it were.
Frenetic feeling rock, but not too harsh
3.0 - Ok
It grew on me. I guess I have more positive feelings overall than with any individual song. Also, it's weird to name your music group after an intentionally unpleasant sound.
Like it 3/5
I think this is ok.
Wouldn’t listen again, didn’t hold my attention …i guess a low three??
eh, not super memorable
Pretty cool but wouldn’t really be interested in listening again.
Grand.
I expected this to be very much 90s British. I was wrong. This is very much 2000s British. It's actually a good album and felt fun. I probably wouldn't come back to re-listen, but I enjoyed it while it played.
Good rock album that I won’t listen to again. Good bassist
Fav: Gravity’s Rainbow Least Fav: Isle Of Her I mean it’s alright, but why is this on the list?
I had never listened to the Klaxons before. This type of dance-punk revival stuff feels pretty niche, and was something I had a small interest in briefly about 20 years ago.
Alright mid-2000s indie rock record. Was only familiar with "Golden Skans" like most leading into this. Gets a little dance-y and more upbeat than your typical indie rock at points, but not super remarkable otherwise.
Golden Skans is quality, the rest is alright. Was very happy a big chunk of the album length was silence at the end of the final track, followed by some weird noise. No, I did not listen to the full silence.
I think this is very much a relic of its time. Definitely not top 1001 albums, just a (decent) one-ish hit wonder group.
This is fine, but not really my cup of tea. It's like a blend of Franz Ferdinand & The B-52's distilled into a concept album about sci-fi stuff. Album has a few banger tracks, "Gravity's Rainbow" & "Atlantis to Interzone" were my personal favorites. "Forgotten Works" has a super funky baseline that itches my brain quite nicely. I very much disliked "As Above So Below". I almost stopped listening to the album.
I mean, it’s ok … but it’s very unremarkable and there is absolutely no requirement to have heard this before dying.
Had never heard of them before. The first few tracks are pretty cool. Kind of a less melodramatic Muse. Liked it less as the album went on though. Too much of The Killers in there.
This approach to dance punk is actually really unique, not a style you hear very often. Still could do with a lot of refining and improvements in the pacing department, but the ideas are definitely there.
Interesting album! I’ve never heard of them.
Progressive in the early 2000‘s but not aged very good.
I wanted to like this more than I actually do. I mean, I hear similarities to Bloc Party who I love. But this has a tendency to tip over into sounding frantic which I find rather jarring
Golden Skans on tietenkin loistava biisi ja nautin aricticmonkeysmaisista rytmikitaroista. Indiekitaravalli on erittäin aikansa kuvaa - tai oikeastaan tää levyhän on vähän etukenossa siinä.
Solid animal collective-esque stuff! P cool
The future has arrived and it is still a myth
Dance Party with a few interesting add ins.
This was fun, sorta sleazy.
Two Receivers: I LOVE the instrumentals for this song, pretty solid song 7/10 Atlantis To Interzone: WHAT THE FUCK THIS BANGSSS 8.5/10 Golden Skans: Im liking this album's sound so far man...especially this song 8/10 Totem on The Timeline: this one was pretty solid 7/10 As Above and Below: 8/10 It's Not over Yet: 9/10 For the rest of the songs they were decent but they might resonate more to me as time goes on. This album has a pretty unique rock sound which made t his first experience very interesting, I am not vibing with vocals for a few songs, not that they were bad. I would give this an album a 7/10.
On paper should really like this.
Peppy and fun. I imagine that there are dozens of bands that sound something like this, but this one is pretty good.
I had never heard of this band. It was pretty ok. Somewhere between a 3-4 for me. I’ll probably look into some more of their work.
I had never heard of this band. A lot of energy, and each song sounds different which keeps the album interesting.
Working through it still.
Sounds like a lot of music I was listening to circa 2007. I knew "It's Not Over Yet" already, but had honestly forgotten it existed until it started playing. It's fine, not standout or revolutionary, but a decent representation of late-00s UK alt rock
Going back and forth on this one, early on I liked the lyrics but not the music. Then it flipped (specifically Musik). It was punk rock meets metal meets new wave electronic. It was unique and different but just a little more polish would have me enjoying it more.
This album of mediocre mid to late ‘00’s alt rock started off strong with the first two songs, but then moved into a ubiquitous alt rock snooze fest and never recovered. It’s not bad, just boring. I’m not a huge fan of rock music from this decade because it almost always feels so ran through.
Brit trash rock, but I actually kind of liked it. Except Atlantis to Interzone, I’m surprised my ears aren’t bleeding after that one.
It was neat.
Definitely an odd inclusion given how New Rave completely failed as a genre and went nowhere, but this album is actually pretty good. Not quite a 4 star good, but close
Some of the more enjoyable punk rock so far
Half of this album was ok, the other half just straight up annoyed me. It’s just mostly a lot of noise for me, which as a guy that likes metal and hard rock, is a bit ironic. It’s like they put all the 2000’s indie music into a blender and played a lot noise over it. Is this what they call “new rave”? Jesus, it’s not for me. I mean, some songs like Two Receivers and Golden Skans are fine. But, I’m just getting tired of this kind of shit. Like, I try not to bring up the obvious British bias the original book seems to have and give every album a chance. But like, for every album like this from the UK that I get, I like it like…60% of the time. This one just came and went for me like the rest. Ugh, next. Favorite track: Golden Skans Other hits: Two Receivers, Gravity’s Rainbow, It’s Not Over Yet, As Above So Below
Not for me. The voice reminded me of Owl City. Like nails on a chalkboard.
There were bits of this album I really liked, but overall it felt quite confused
Вроде что-то не совсем обычное, но не зашло
This falls into the deep abyss of I’ve heard this exact album on this list hundreds of times
Had its moments but in the end didn't really distinguish itself from other indie/pop rock albums I've listened to and enjoyed more.
Quite good and competent danceable indie-garage-rock-pop. The swinging beats and basslines separate them from the boring pack, but it is only almost there. It is telling that (IMO) their best song is a cover
Out the gate I’m in. It’s got a texture I dig.
Hay canciones buenas pero otras no ajsjsjjs
Pretty generic 2000s indie rock.
Great to get back to some decent music after too much American pap.
yeah it's fine. not my era
I think I'd love this if I was into it as a teenager when it first came out, but I can see the appeal
did not finish but seemed cool
It was fine.
формата окэй
Solidly ok
Some songs here are not that good and pretty boring (and at least one with very poor production), but the rest, especially in the later half, are quite catchy and entertaining. There's nothing impressive here and the quality is a bit inconsistent, but overall I had fun listening to this album. 7/10
Two outlier tracks, Atlantis To Interzone and Four Horsemen Of 2012, prevent this from being a consistently good record. I will admit, though, that I enjoyed this significantly more than I thought I would after seeing the description "rave rock". Apart from the singing, which is almost bad enough to be comparable to punk, the cool synths save it and then some. Lots of nifty layering, modern clean production, and gritty guitarwork give Myths Of The Near Future a pretty darn satisfying sound. I will say, it really doesn't sound like rave music, even for its time. The singing and instrumentation are too human for that. Piano is used only sparingly (and mostly in low octaves) but I still appreciate its presence. Golden Skans is the best song on here, no question. Sounds a bit like Coldplay. One of the measures of good singing is when it's difficult to hear an accent. Luckily, that's the norm with most music - but not most of this album, hence my complaint above. In Golden Skans, it's much harder to make out the singer's thick English accent. Good drumming, overlapping vocal harmonies, and thick texture that's extremely reminiscent of the good ol' 2000s. Two Receivers also deserves a shoutout for kind of being the Klaxons' Astronomy Domine. Probably because of the retro-space noises and 5th-interval harmonies in the singing. This is another song where the singing is genuinely good. (In contrast, take the lead single from the album, Magick. It's energetic and bursting with techno rock elements like the other tracks, but the singing makes it sound... amateur, I guess?) 3/5 Key tracks: Two Receivers, Golden Skans, As Above So Below
fun dance rock but gets boring after a while
3.4 - Fun, but that's all
I was the exact target audience for the Klaxons. At the time this was a certified classic, but now it sounds quite dated, though I will say the 4 singles that I recall all still slap pretty hard. Most of the rest of the tracks are poor imitations of the singles, filled with gibberish lyrics that sound very much like they're trying to be quirky cool. The production is also pretty awful. Some songs have an almost garage feel to them, which doesn't work well with their futuristic sonic aesthetic. Maybe its just the fact that the "DJ! Uh uh uh" sounds that kick off "Atlantis to Interzone" were pre-sets on a cheap keyboard I played as a teenager. This was probably super cool to me at the time but just cheapens the track now. Idk, its still pretty fun. 3.2/5
I guess this is fine as casual music. I don't hate it. I think it has some interesting electronic arrangements. But overall, it sounds to me like every guitar driven band from that era. Nothing too exciting. Hardly any interesting chord progressions. It's the kind of rock that doesn't brother me but I don't really like it. It's just MEH.
This was pretty good! I could see this growing on me more if I listened to it a few more times.
My overriding thought after hearing this album in its entirety comprised “Is Golden Skans included on a FIFA release? It sounds like a FIFA song”, beyond that I’ve got little opinion. I like the cover of ”it’s not over yet” and didn’t realise that was the Klaxons. Aside from that, some nice but often overly soft production, and a tendency to dangerously flirt with the type of dire pop rock that could be from McFly. I have no reason to ever listen to this again before I die.
Bought this on release. This is fine. Nothing more. It’s a bit scatter fun and ‘noise’ to be anything more than fine.
Myths of the Near Future is a mix of dance-punk, new wave, and indie rock that sounds interesting on paper but ultimately feels pretty average in execution. There’s a futuristic, sci-fi theme running through the album, both in its lyrics and electronic flourishes, but while the band clearly has musical talent, most of the songs just don’t leave a lasting impact. Golden Skans and It’s Not Over Yet are the highlights, with their smooth melodies and catchy hooks, but beyond those, the rest of the album tends to blur together. Tracks like Gravity’s Rainbow and Magick bring energy, but nothing really stands out as particularly special—it all just sounds nice without being truly memorable. The biggest issue is that while the album is polished and full of layered sounds, it lacks real depth or variety. The vocals are almost always stacked with effects, the guitars and synths fill every space, and the songs follow a similar structure, making it hard to pick out anything truly distinctive. It’s an album that plays well in the moment but doesn’t stick with you once it’s over. There’s nothing particularly bad about Myths of the Near Future, but there’s also not much to get excited about either. It’s fine, but it’s hard to see it as anything more than that.
Ahh, I'm 18 again. Dancing around with a pint of fosters and an endless desire for 'new' music and other new conquests. Some of that new music wasn't always that great though. This is probably one of those. Still... Memories!
Some good songs decent album 7/10
Not bad - a nice break from all the technotronica that's been coming my way.
Didn't really listen to this in it's time. It's strange, beyond golden skans and it's not over yet I fon't recognise any of these songs. But those two were big in my life for a time. And then the album shows a greater deal of depth and variety than I would have expected. I loved Kasier Chiefs and Hard-Fi and could sing entire albums of theirs to you but they are very one note by comparison. Enjoyable. I wish there was a 2.5 starts options but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and go for 3. If someone put this on I'd let it all play.
C’était fun
This was interesting but I didn’t find authentic particularly outstanding with it.
Very acceptable offering... Good lyrics/music mix
An interesting album that doesn't live up to its full potential. I like the noise elements and wish they fully committed to that sound, because the pop, indie rock, brit pop or whatever you want to call it elements are easy the worst part of this album. I feel like if they removed those popier elements I would have enjoyed this a lot more. High 3.
I think they are interesting....but not top 1001
club classics vol one was far more club than this
Never heard of them! Enjoyable.
I kind of liked this. Never heard of them.
Relentless and some good ideas but a bit overblown
Having heard Klaxons before I thought this might be pretty cool, especially having already heard “Golden Skans” and “It’s Not Over Yet”, but I was wrong. Techno indie’s just not really for me, the two mentioned tracks are the only good tracks IMO. It’s mediocre and mostly unentertaining. 3, only because of those two tracks previously mentioned.
Track selection is key to any good album. And my favorite thing about this one is that they kept it to under 40 minutes.
Next time I want to jump up and down for 35 minutes with music I might choose this album - or not.
I don't love the falsetto, auto-tuned (or whatever) vocals, but I don't hate them either. The music's interesting. I like it more than I would have thought from something in the "new-rave" genre. 3.5*
Actually pretty tame
Liked it more than I thought it would, it had me tapping my foot along as I listened. It is just another album where you go, what exactly is special enough about this album that it warrants a place on this list?
Not bad. Has a nice energy.
Never heard of this band before. I didn't hate it.
I feel like this one was a 3 through and through. Nothing off-putting and it was enjoyable to listen to. If it grabbed my attention more with one or two great songs, it could've gotten into the 4 conversation.
слишком много клаксонов, что за музыка неотложки
Didn't know what to expect but was not disappointed some cool tunes in there!
its pretty decent for what it is but i think i would’ve enjoyed this one more if i were a british teenager in the 2000’s. Also “Golden Skans” is a banger.
this was enjoyable but idk that i'd ever choose to listen to it
It was a nice rock album and I especially liked the track Atlantis to Interzone.
Reminded me in part of Franz Ferdinand, but edgier. Not bad.
Theoretically I should love this album. There's a unifying concept, lots of dissonance mixed with melody, and some rewarding compositions. Unfortunately, no matter how interesting it is to listen to, I don't feel it. It's not connecting with me beyond on a surface level. I've even owned a copy of this album for over a decade, but only listened to it twice. Today was the third time sitting through all of it. Thankfully other artists were mining similar sonic territory at the same time, like !!! and Liars whom I prefer over Klaxons by far.
3.5/5. There are a few good tracks on here, Golden Skans being the standout. I don't think I could casually listen to this, but I think it's different and overall decent.
Short, sweet, and to the point. An album worth checking out.
I like some of the tracks, but the overall effect is that it's a bit pretentious and not in a subtle way. It's too loud too
ýmislegt áhugavert gjörðist hér. 3,5.
"Myths of the Near Future" is the debut album by English rock band Klaxons. The Wiki-listed genres are dance-punk, new wave and pop rock. Dance-punk is a new one for me. It is a science fiction concept album about the future with song titles and lyrics with literary references to J.G. Ballard, William S. Burroughs and Thomas Pynchon. The album was produced by James Ford from the band Simian Mobile Disco who also played drums. The actual band members are Jamie Reynolds (vocals, bass), James Richton (keyboards, vocals) and Simon Taylor (guitar, vocals). The album had generally favorable reviews and won the 2007 Mercury Prize. Commercially, it made it all the way up to #2 in the UK. An interesting start to the album with a distorted drumbeat, guitar and keyboards in "Two Receivers." Raspy vocals. An eerie background with keyboards definitely giving a sci-fi vibe. A resemblance to Duran Duran's "A View to a Kill." The second of five singles is "Golden Skans." This is more popish. Layered and backing vocals. This is catchy. The lyrics are from J.G. Ballard with the song title the name of a light machine in raves. "As Above, So Below" starts out slow and then a loud, distorted death metal guitar shows up. More layered vocals (pretty much layered vocals from here on out). A premise of the macro (cosmos) influencing the micro and visa versa. "Gravity's Rainbow" brings up the speed. OK, here is the dance or disco-punk. A weird guitar bridge. He'll travel to infinity with the title a Thomas Pynchon novel. Synth horns, a distorted guitar and annoying vocals begin "Magick." They speed it up again with a piercing guitar in this good vs evil song with references now to occultist Aleister Crowley. They cover a Grace song in "It's Not Over Yet." Another piercing guitar but now I get post-punk vibes. Ah, that's a good thing. Finally, a self-explanatory song from its title. It's hard to come up with a better album cover that best describes the music as this one. This is a very busy album with the layered vocals, voice and noise samples, keyboards, guitar, changing beats and science fiction lyrics. Actually, if science fiction was a musical genre this would be in it. I will agree with some of the positive criticism with regards to their musicianship; they do know how to play their instrument. A good description of their music is a mash or mix of Muse and Bloq Party. So, if you are a fan of those two bands, this may be right up your alley. For some reason, I'm in search of the arcade game Zaxxon; I might still have my ColecoVision somewhere.
Was leaning 4 but at couple of things went against it. Tracks that are big long periods of silence are a point taken away automatically. Generally good
That was better than I remembered to be fair - a spacey and offbeat indie album with the first three songs in particularly being very exciting and memorable. Some of the hooks can be a little annoying and, while the sci-fi premise is fun on the whole, some individual lyrics are either very pretentious or just painfully bad. Wikipedia says this is linked to the dance-punk scene of LCD Soundsystem and Franz Ferdinand which I don’t really see - to me, it’s more like a sci-fi alternative to the sea-shanty inspired conceptual indie of The Coral’s self-titled. It’s catchy, gimmicky, and it beat Back to Black to win the Mercury Prize so I will never forgive it
ok Britpop from the late 00s
For all the hints of mysticism and the estoric this remains rather poppy and clean in its soundmixing and playing.
Weird but interesting I must say
A perfectly fine album. I listened to this one twice because I was a bit distracted the first time, but it fell into the background a bit in the second listen as well. High 3.
A few songs in and nothing remarkable, but also not bad. Kinda reminds me of a worse Bloc Party. Got into some songs but was meh on way too much of this. Still not a bad listen. I feel like in the right environment I could love this album. Would definitely see them at a festival.
I've never heard of this band, and I'm not familiar with this era of music. What's a similar sound to this? Muse I guess? This isn't as good. Much of it was just overwhelming with all the noise. It just seemed mechanical, just something a good music AI could do. I liked Totems On the Timeline. A low 3/5.
Growing up is realizing that the music we loved as a young adult is not that great. To be honest, this one led up a bit better than I was expected but definitely of its time and a questionable addition to the list.
Sounds of my brothers basement room. Glad this music stayed in the early 2000s and isn’t making a come back.
While it has enthusiasm it seems rather unsophisticated in a way that felt empty
Good.
I always thought it was the Klaxons not klaxons, I think it just sounds weird with the added the… anyway the album… Yeah I got bloc party vibes here massively but why is this album on the list when silent alarm isn’t??? Like with the hits golden skans is completely unremarkable compared to banquet and helicopter. A lot of songs I felt were really similar. Like out of songs 2,4 and 5, only 1 should’ve been on here and the others should’ve been reworked. Magick and gravity’s rainbow were the best ones. I’m not a production nerd but James ford has produced much better albums than this especially in recent years such as romance, prelude to ecstasy and the ballad of Darren. 3/5
This is fun! A new find for me. Nothing earth shatteringly creative but got me bouncing. Totem on the Timeline is the highlight track for me. Probably deserves a 3.5, not sure if I can stretch it to a four.
I never heard of this band until yesterday. It's a good album danceable in spots, dense arrangements. It's loud and brash but accessible and fun. Can't say any of the songs are immediately memorable, but the overall feel is good. 3 stars
This is a mood from start to finish.
This was an eclectic and fun listen. Very high energy. Not sure I’d go back to it, but I’m not opposed to the idea.
Poppy and silly. fast pacted and an easy listen. 3.
It was fine, but completely unremarkable. I’m guessing this is on the list for Anglophilic reasons.
3.5
I liked the first track, but from there it felt like it all kind of blended together and I was losing interest 20 min in. Not bad, but too boring/homogenous.
Sì beh non è malvagio
Staple mid 00s record. Went through the motions with these, was always somewhere between really liking them and finding them irritating. Definitely more inventive than a lot of other mainstream stuff of the time, that’s for sure. I guess for me they just weren’t as good as The Rapture. Still really like Atlantis to Interzone, and there’s a time and place for Gravity’s Rainbow which is good but my carpet aint sticky so it felt wrong hearing it. I’d also be prepared to die on the hill that says their version of Not Over Yet is better than the original. Solid 3.5
Definitely had this album when I was younger, only recognised half of it. The good songs still hold up mostly, except the higher pitch backing vocals which really get on my nerves. The other songs really don't work at all. Think they should stick to the 'new rave' sound, all of the more guitar leaning indie leaning ones aren't as good.
Loud. Banging. Good.
Though many bands in 2007 tried to create something similar to this, none did it quite so well (looking at you The Bravery). Notably influenced by early Bloc Party and The Last Shadow Puppets, Klaxons successfully blend indie dance into a fast-paced 'New Rave' album. Abrasive at times, but in a good way. 3.5/5
Shit you'd hear in a spin class if everyone in there thought they were too cool for Stanley cups.
I don't know what this is doing on the list. It's got some decent tracks but it didn't really blow my mind or stand out. There's a lot of other bands doing this kind of music from that era but way better.
I’ve heard this twice on these long lists. Just hasn’t grabbed me.
It's not bad but also not anything special. I feel like I've heard 100 different indie/alternative bands that sound nearly the exact same, so I don't know why this one is a "must listen"
I didn't like Atlantis To Interzone very much because it had annoying sounds. Very rough sound on Four Horsemen of 2012 as well. Most of the other songs were quite good. Golden Skans sounds familiar.
Was alright, might listen again
3.75
Loved as a teenager but not sure it's as deep as I thought when I was 14.
I had actually heard abfew songs from this album before, not even knowing the name of the band. The Klaxons have a very interesting sound- kind of a fusion of indie rock, post-punk, electronic, post-grunge. Crazy fushion- sometimes it really works, sometimes it doesnt land as well. Overall- solid album. Definitely some songs I enjoyed and would put on again.
I enjoyed it all the way through for what it is. I just don't know that it's interesting enough to be on this list.
Interesting
Britisk indierock, lidt dance/pop inspireret, et par gode numre, et bare glembare
An ok indie UK band. Nothing remarkable but better than the 80s 90s versions of this same band (of which this list has countless others) simply because the sound is more modern. Nothing hateful and so brief I didn't know the album ended until I saw Spotify was playing something else.
Decently interesting indie rock. I've heard some of these songs before, but, I don't know if this album is a must listen for most folks
Really cool album. Glad I listened to it, perhaps I don't have the foresight to see this sharing the same list as the likes of Otis Redding and The Beatles. But, I'm not afraid of new music. Certainly not afraid of a new modern classic. Real upbeat but kinda psychedelic mash of 2 Door Cinnema Club and Surfer Blood. Perfect late 2000's indie rock.
Not bad but none of the tracks really stood out either.
All of the songs sound the same and this is what everything sounded like in 2007. Wannabe Bloc Party.
The vocals weren't great. And generally the group sounded like a college garage band.
8/28/24. Interesting album from a band I haven't heard of. Probably need to give it another listen, was unique sounding but thought it got a little repetitive. I still enjoyed it.
As this is the first time listening to this band, at least, to my knowledge, I do my best to keep an open mind.... So here's what that mind has to say: Can we NOT sing with this faux falsetto voice? Big fans of The Prodigy and/or Frans F are we? Stop trying to be, just be! I like the beat, I like the chords, I like the overall feeling of this album, but I can't get over the voices and my urge to just punch them in the face. 3* for the effort.
I got this album when it came out based on the song Golden Skans which is great as is It's Not Over Yet which is a banger. The rest of the album is ok nothing too bad but nothing spectacular although they were very good live.
Loved this album when it came out, one of th indie bands Iv completely forgot about. Probably don’t get the same credit as bloc party, but maybe they should.
I enjoyed it, though sometimes it goes a little to hard for me.
This album was fine, but I'm also never going to think about it again 3/5
Not really my sound
cool indie electromusic imbued with the violent life-aura of oppressed youth
The "high" point of nu-rave, a short-lived and fairly local phenomenon in the UK which involved someone playing a guitar near some dance music, while everyone got off their face on various substances. If this had happened when I was a student, rather than a responsible and functional member of society, I would have loved it. As it is, it sounds like drunken pretentious asshats merging two genres that do not mesh well. But somehow, it works (a bit).
Golden Skans is very well known. The songs in the beginning are are little more my taste, the later ones are quite cacophonous.
Cool ideas.
Typical sounding indie-rock that elevates and separates itself from other similar sounding bands, with lots of energy, enthusiasm, decent beats with many stand-out tracks. I haven't heard of Klaxons, I wonder why because I listened to a lot of indie-rock-pop during the 2000's, but they bring to the table a fusion of different sounds which was interesting and eclectic. Well worth the listen.
Decent album, but nothing that really impressed me all that much. 'Totem On The Timeline' had a bit of Franz Ferdinand vibes, so that was a pretty cool song. Hard to pinpoint what type of genre this would be exactly.
A little unrelenting on the drum lines, but some technically good music with variety.
Punk new wave, not bad but not really into this anymore. Good in small doses
This held up a lot more than I thought it would
Cool album. I liked the bass lines and production on this.
Simply put, not that important or impactful a record.
Tämä uusi tuttavuus yllätti positiivisesti, helposti kolme staraa
Some funky stuff going on here
Helt ok
It was alright, I guess. Won’t listen again though. 3.4
Surprising that it's released in 2007. I thought it was from the '90s. Surprisingly generic, especially considering the epicness of the title. "Near future" in 2007, it could've been interesting.
It's alright. Not really my type of music
An ok listen but not sure why it made the list.
Not bad, but it felt like a lesser Franz Ferdinand. maybe a 3.5
Another perfectly fine album. Wasn't familiar with it before I started it. Sort of forgot I was listening to it at one point.
Good energy and production, mid songs
The album was ok. I was not like I need to hear this before I die. It was neither bad nor great hence the score.
A solid surprise. I didn’t know what to expect but it was a solid little band and I understand why it is on the list because some of their songs really style wise are a part of the alt-pop scene now
maybe it's because I had such low expectations but this wasn't bad. it was interesting, some good hooks in a few songs. hard time understanding lyrics in a few.
This record is perfectly okay, but I don't understand what inspired someone to put it on this list. Nobody else seems to get it either.
A very decent album until the last song. Without that shit song and stupid gap of 15 minutes to further noise it would have been a 4.
The benefits of a killer single and a great cover. A very generous 3, but if Golden Skans & It’s Not Over Yet weren’t on it, it would be almost unlistenable
Brit rock
A couple of these songs were familiar sounding - particularly "It's Not Over". This was a fun listen- definitely brought me back to the dancey indie rock vibes that were big when I was in high school.
Pop rock. Ni fu ni fa.
For me the Klaxons fit that group I speak of that gets relegated to the corner table while better and stronger bands headline. It isn't that they are particulary bad or uninteresting. It is more to do with they are not specifically good or directly interesting. I would put this band in that pool where you question whether the allbum is a "must listen" or kind of a "yeah, I've heard of them..."
A more chaotic MGMT, and a lesser one as a result, but I guess I just have a soft spot for this era of electro-pop, so I enjoyed it enough. Its weakness is that it doesn’t really stick with me long term, but it almost does. Like it comes close enough for me to be sympathetic to it. This is one of those albums on this list where I’d argue I didn’t HAVE to hear it before I died, but I’m glad I did. Unsure if I’d go out of my way to own a copy, but I’d definitely pick it up if I can across it in the bin on a mediocre digging day.
British pop rock with a sci-fi vibe, ok but nothing amazing here
I don’t think I’d call it new wave, but it’s not terrible
I didn’t expect much from this but was pleasantly surprised.
Totally fine. Sounds like mid 2000s radio rock. Kasabian-like. It’s fine.
Different but pretty solid. 3.5
Not sure how this one snuck by me in 2006. It’s good stuff. Not stellar, but good. It like TV on the Radio and MGMT.
Klaxon’s Myths of the Near Future is a mostly an uninteresting and short rock listen. However, there is two standouts on this album that actually have a lot of cohesion and replayability. As Above So Below is psychedelic, it’s weird, unique. I loved it on the first listen, and that didn’t change on the second. A perfect song. Gravity’s Rainbow, another great song, has a great flow and nice vocal effects. All in all, Myths of the Near Future is an alright album. Best Song: As Above So Below Worst Song: Magick
Conocía It's not over yet.
In 2007 I was living in Brooklyn feasting on all the loud, fast, and out of control music I could get my hands on at the exclusion of all but the most ubiquitous indie-mall / every restaurant's playlist songs and thus Klaxons wasn't very likely to make it through my most metal shield and into my awareness. And yet, listening to Myths Of The Near Future today I can hear overlap with many bands who for one reason or another (mostly location) I was aware of. Turn your head the right way and you can hear early Liars as well as The Blood Brothers in a blender with the party-ready !!! and record store nerd bands like Animal Collective or Wolf Parade. Not trying to sound sassy or smug, I like all those bands. So, this is what a reckoning is like. I was immediately hooked on the record and, while not every song slaps (as you might expect from me as the reviewer I'm least drawn to the most danceable, club ready tracks), I am still into it after a few spins today though it's hard to say if Myths Of The Near Future would sustain a day 2 or 3 of heavy rotation.
También brillantes melodías pop como "As Above, So Below" y "Gravity's Rainbow" o luminosas baladas como "It's Not Over Yet". Personalmente me gusta el tema que abre el disco "Two Receivers" que, de alguna forma, es un compendio de todo lo demás.
Bloc party esque. Trippy, ikke min favorit.
I don't mind this, but I prefer earlier brit-pop like the Stone Roses, James, Supergrass, or Oasis
Definitely late 80s European pop/rock sound. Similar to White Lies and Silversun Pickups. Probably give it a 3.5 overall - enjoyed all the songs, and may give it another listen. Magick was a standout.
I came in expecting to really like this album. Some good straight forward in-your-face rock? Score. Unfortunately, this just didn't deliver on my expectation. It's not a bad album, far from it in fact, but it's not a great album either. Solid, middle of the road rock album that doesn't really stand out in any way.
first listen very unique style, didn't quite catch my fancy
Pretty typical late ‘00s alternative/indie rock, reminds me of Arctic Monkeys, a bit of Black Keys here and there. Enjoyable but nothing too amazing. I liked the different styles from song to song. 3.5/5
The top review calls this nameless indie rock from the UK from the 00s and that pretty much sums up my opinion. It's fine but nothing beyond that.
There were some fun riffs and drum fills here and there but overall this didn't do much for me. I'm not sure that it will stand the test of time (she says 20 years after it's release).
Started really strong, but then I think it lost a bit of its punch halfway through.
An exhilarating head rush that could also, at times, come and go like vapor, Myths of the Near Future sees Klaxons making the best out of a seeming endpoint in British rock culture by applying sci-fi and electronics to the forefront. Intriguing on paper and explosive in action, Klaxons make do with their best effort and don't overstay their welcome doing so. If only my near future myths would be as good as this... Favorites: Two Recievers, Atlantis to Interzone, Totem on the Timeline, As Above So Below, Isle of Her, Magick, It's Not Over Yet.
estuvo bueno pero algunas canciones las sentía similares a otras Xd
I remember wearing a lot of new rave neon around the time this came out. I didn't have the album but I know a few songs off it. It's very original but I find the overall sound a bit cluttered, so wouldn't be something I'd return to.
I actually listened to this album multiple times, and it was pretty good! Nothing crazy notable, but I would say they make a good radio friendly band that is easy to like. Good background music around the house. Some songs are pretty good road trip songs too. Listen again: probably Purchase for my collection: maybe Favourite Song: Golden Skans
Nokkur gott stuff ... margt sem ég ímynda mér að ég hefði hlustað á þegar þetta kom út ... en ekki beint "vinnuvænt". Efalaust þess virði að renna í gegnum aftur
Very high energy, some good tracks in there.
Pop rock. Ni fu ni fa.
Conocía It's not over yet.
Kinda like Blue in parts. A lower grade, kinda forgettable Blue, but you know, I thought about the link more than once.
A pretty kooky mix of ideas and styles. I veered between disliking it and vaguely enjoying it. Almost a 2.
Wow, pretty good stuff. Not the same from song to song, great writing, great grooves, great playing. I'm not bored, I'm intrigued. I never heard of this band before, but I don't think they would have been popular in the USA since they can't be easily pegged into our very narrow genres in order to get airplay. It got annoying mid-way though, so I didn't listen all the way through.
It's like if the Arctic Monkeys weren't!
This brand of electronic and psychedelic alt rock was ubiquitous at this time, especially coming from the UK. As such I didn’t really hear much here that sounded new for its time. Indeed this sound has been imitated so many times it hard to give it a fair rating at all as there is still much of this sound present in contemporary rock. However, the Klaxons execute this album very well and I really enjoyed it.
Solid alternative rock record, reminiscent of many elements that were popular of the time. At moments they sound like Fall Out Boy and others like Soundgarden. I dig this.
Some good ones off this album but it just didn’t hit differently like I thought it would. Maybe it’s because it’s following two 5/5s but it just felt lackluster.
at its best, a decent arctic monkeys soundalike, at its worst, a slightly discordant mess. i much preferred the uptempo stuff than the downtempo stuff. don't think it ends up being as evocative as a lot of their contemporaries' works and i think that lowers its esteem in my eyes. a bit of a crapshoot.
Honestly don’t think i remember much of the album other than Golden Skans
Some good, some not as good. Overall I enjoyed how well they brought the noise together but this isn't my typical music and I don't see myself listening to it much going forward.
Pretty cool record. Miike Snow prequel.
pretty cool dance grooves and flavoring on alt rock foundation
Sort of Yeah, yeah, yeahs stuff
mediocrities of the near past
Epitome of 2000s British indie. A mix of post-Britpop, dance punk, and industrial-based electronica. It's full, fast-paced, and aims to shock the audience, like overstimulation of foundations left behind by earlier garage revival artists like The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and Bloc Party. It's short and consistent with several great tracks. It has a unique sound, highlighting a fuzzy lo-fi aesthetic with the static effects, especially on the vocals. The downside is that I feel the songs are too repetitive, often repeating the same hooks and chorus over and over to get people to dance and sing. With the overstimulation, it can be a bit exhausting, especially on successive listens. It's hard for me to fall in love with any songs. "Golden Skans" and "It's Not Over Yet" are accessible and simple enough to warrant their indie anthem statuses. If you heard these tracks in a pub, they'd sound like pretty generic indie hits, but you could tell there was something different about them in the production that you'd only get in the context of the record. I do appreciate the effort put into every song, and I think every one has something unique to offer. It's a shame I can't really get behind any of them, despite their obvious desperate attempts to appeal to mainstream audiences. It's a solid record that I wish could have stronger tracks.
Some bops on there but imagine it would get annoying after a bit. Decent album though
3.5
Never heard of these guys before and can't say I'll remember them if I ever hear them again. But for the 40 some odd minutes I spent with them this afternoon, we had a jolly good romp about.
Rather faceless and adequate British post punk revival . Boring song named after a Thomas Pynchon classic.
3.09 per track. Better than I thought
Not a bad album but didn't really strike me. I'd give it another listen.
I somehow don't think I've ever listened to them, in spite of my love for aughts era dance punk. This is pretty fun. A bit more full sounding than many of the others that are more stripped and angular.
It’s pretty basic indie rock. Not bad but entirely forgettable.
Yet another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex Listened to this when it came out, thought it was alright, then forgot about it. Listened again a couple of years ago, thought it was alright, then forgot about it again. Now today, I think it's alright, and... I've forgot what I was gonna say.
The raucous bits are not brilliant. Rest good
It was interesting. Fun in that 80s kind of way.
Not really a fan but appreciate the ambition
Pretty fun indie rock from the late mid 2000s. Feels like I would have heard this from behind a door as a roommate is sparkin one.
Cover Impressions: WTF are we getting into now. Reminds me a bit of the happy Mondays cover mixed with some of the appropriation of Jah Wobble's. Which would make my guess some kind of British mess. I'm equally disappointed and pleased with the album I heard vs my expectations. It was different enough have me be wrong about the style, but there are still some similar criticisms or rather just some bits that just aren't for me. I like the more driving sound and spacey feel, and think it is closer to something I like rather than dislike, so may come back to give it another listen. The first 3 tracks were probably my favorites of the lot Favorite track: "Golden Skans" 3/5
