Reviews (page 4 of 8)
This is the first time I’ve ever listened to a KISS album from beginning to end and it was mostly exactly what I expected. The rock was fun, the ballads were soulful, and I thought it was deserving of a spot on the list.
Not bad. A pretty classic sound. Not super memorable though.
3.5 - the album has three great songs and the rest ain’t that good. But kiss isn’t know for being musical geniuses. They’re about having a good time while listening and this album hits that mark
The most interesting track is Detroit Rock City, because it opens with audio. This feels like such a more modern device, and that takes it away from feeling cheesy. The music though, I dunno. Kiss are doing what Kiss do. I think if you grew up with this, it's probably awesome. But decades on the album feels a little formulaic (even though Kiss wrote the formula)
I always expect KISS to be worse than they are. But this was very tame/ vanilla rock. I thought my Spotify was glitching with track1 , but it was just stupid noises.
I’m okay with Kiss. They sound pretty good but I don’t love. Solid.
Tried to let go and enjoy it, I’m sure they’re a riot live
I may not love the trail they were blazing but can't deny were building something new. Cheesy as it is, Detroit Rock City is a fun song
I expected this to be big dumb fun Mission accomplished
The fun bits are still absolutely stonking! But there's less than 30 mins music on this record and some of it is lame. Favourites: Shout it Out Loud, Detroit Rock City, God of Thunder.
Few tracks got my attention and overall not a bad experience, although the title track was lackluster.
Thoughts before listening: I think Kiss is dumb. Based on their makeup and overall vibes you'd think they were some sort of hardcore metal band, but they're not. Its the dumbest, cheeseball rock music ever...but its also pretty fun. I know this is one of their most well known albums, so I am assuming a bunch of classic rock staples are on this album. Review: This album isn't actually as filled with massive hits as I was expecting, although "Detroit Rock City", "Shout It Out Loud", and "Beth" are certainly big songs. I would say there's nothing here really changing my mind about Kiss, but there are worse ways to spend 30 minutes than listening to this album of perfectly enjoyable poppy hard rock. 3-stars
Great album, with memorable tracks, good sound and interesting outliers that stray from the rock heavy songs. Will definitely listen to it, many more times.
This is a solid 3. It is good. There are good moments. "Detroit Rock City" is one of my favorites, but there are some duds here and sometimes it is just...fine. I don't understand why some people regard this album as one of the best rock albums. Its fine. "Great Expectations" is TERRIBLE Liked Songs: "Detroit Rock City" , "King Of The Night Time World" , "Shout It Out Loud" , "Beth" , "Do You Love Me"
Groovy
KISS being KISS
Not really a KISS fan, but I won't lie some tracks are pretty good. This album is quite a surprise, I liked it more than I thought, but not enough to go back for more. Gene Simmons is a beast, there are some kick ass bass lines. Some of the solo work is alright, but not great. Vocals don't really give me much. Not sure why I don't really like them, I like similar bands. Their image doesn't do much for me, feels a bit pointless and doesn't fit their music style.
I quite enjoyed most of this album. Nothing blew me away but it was an enjoyable listen.
This album was decent. A few good tracks and some others I didn't care for.
Kiss's music is not bad, but I don't like their oversexual aesthetic and I have more personal reasons that make them uncomfortable to me. But still, some quite cool songs.
# 487 : Destroyer by KISS : 23/05/2025 Best Live band EVER! - They've done a pretty decent job with this though, a good album, short and sweet. Aside from the obvious Detroit Rock City and Shout It Out Loud, the album didn’t really grab me. Solid but not really a standout, not 5 star material. Did I mention how good they are live?
Just rock, nothing interesting
some bores but they have made bangers also bonus points cause they played afl grand final 2023 and pies won flag pies but I like good rock n roll so yay
Detroit Rock City can get it, the rest of the record is a little generic. Still alright.
I do not like Kiss, but this is probably what they should be remembered for (and Alive!). It feels like they tried to make a Queen album, but the timelines are spotty at best to support that. Beth is so hilarious and a genuine good song but so hilarious.
The charm on this one wore out fast. KISS are a singles band, but they have great album artwork.
It was ok, tbh i expected more
I feel like KISS's (admittedly deserved) reputation precedes them. On its own merits, this particular album is...serviceable.
It took me a minute to appreciate it, but the melodies were really infectious.
Decent hard rock but nothing stood out to me.
Less tacky than watching them perform. Not bad but not great. Not a fan of Beth but Detroit Rock City and Shout it out Loud are really good. Very high 3.
So, KISS sounded super hardcore when I was younger but it just seems a bit soofter than what I remember now, but I would like to say that the two songs that I knew from this album were pretty nice - Detroit Rock City and Shout It Out Loud.
Listenable
Repeat listen
Better than I expected.
Giving this a 3 for pure nostalgia points and a few big hits. But the songs in between the hits are hard to stomach.
How can I kind of like this and kind of hate it at the same time? It’s dumb fun but some of the lyrics are shockingly bad. By all accounts they put on a great show though. If Kiss The Musical isn’t a thing it should be. Want to give it 3.5
Not my cuppa. Appreciate the self irony though
Not anything groundbreaking, but really good for training
Pretty much exactly what you would expect from a kiss album. Fun, over the top but nothing amazing. Standout songs God of Thunder
Some fun songs
Ok
Listened Before? N This album is dripping with 70s sauce. I like the music for the most part - but you can feel the arrogance of a band at the top of their popularity. They almost seem like even THEY can't believe how popular they are. Overall, a good effort from the boys in KISS, but maybe not much of a "classic" outside their fanbase. I was glad to finally listen to this one though. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: God of Thunder
Somehow too safe for glam rock. A few good tunes but otherwise forgettable.
too much bob ezrin. kiss is best when they keep it simple, because they are nothing if not stupid
I didn't get to this today. But I will listen during sauna. Didn't get to in sauna either. lol It's Monday now. So nowwwww I'll get to it. I remember being young and hearing that KISS stood for Knights In Satan's Service, and loving that! I've always been a satanist at heart. It's funny because their music isn't even that heavy it's just good ol rock n roll. This has been meh, 3 stars.
A classic. Beth is a low key ballad that often gets overlooked.
Not the band i'd listen to, but listenable
Yes!
a little self awareness goes a long way
KISS is the candy corn of classic rock. Either you hate it or you love it — there's no in-between when it comes to this overly processed shit.
Is this a joke? The whole thing? Lowest common denominator music with clown makeup. At least Beth was on this album, but when that is cornier than an Iowa deer's shit.
I want to know the real story behind beth! but ya this was fun but really few songs I would listen to again
Not commenting the lyrics. The sound is quite good same as complexity of songs. It's serious music and I can partly enjoy that.
ez meg azzal lepett meg, hogy kevésbé tetszik mint hittem.
No clue why I expected heavy metal, because this was… better than that. Good quality rock and I liked the stuff when they didn’t do rock better.
Apparently there were a lot of hits in this album, I didn’t really hear it. It was just rock, and it felt like the album didn’t really go anywhere. Wasn’t bad but it didn’t make me go crazy like them at concert.
Like the Britney Spears album, it is very emblematic of its time and not much else. I liked the album cover though. Low 3.
6/10 - There were some ok parts, but overall it was just mid.
Kiss seems like more of a gimmick than an actually good band, but this was fine. Super basic and didn’t really take risks, but had some solid songs
cartoon rock and roll
3 stars
A little disappointed. A few great songs but not their best work. They are much better live!
A solid, albeit not very distinctive, rock'n'roll sound. I've heard some great things about KISS's live performances and I can definitely understand how their stage presence would elevate these songs to an otherworldly level. As it stands now, the layered rock vocals do their job of creating a thick, energetic texture and complementing the guitar riffs and rhythm section nicely. The riffs themselves are very good, and they really make the choruses shine in songs like Sweet Pain, Do You Love Me, and Shout It Out Loud. Beth is a strong ballad that breaks up the high energy well enough, illustrating the huge importance of ballads in rock repertoires. There's something that doesn't quite make this "great", though. It's true – the lyrics (or at least the lyrics I comprehended, being someone who doesn't normally pay heed to them) are amateur and devoid of any engaging message. The rock sound plays it extremely safe, especially for the mid-70s when pushing the boundaries of popular music was all the rage. Even punk, a genre I usually dislike, has a leg up on KISS's music in that regard. KISS's contemporaries in the hard/classic rock era, like AC/DC, Def Leppard, Black Sabbath, etc. are also leagues ahead. It's a rough comparison with KISS on the losing end at every turn. Less bite, a less distinctive sound, slightly worse musicianship... I have high hopes for the band, though. They've got more ammo in their discography. 3/5 Key tracks: Sweet Pain, Shout It Out Loud, Do You Love Me
Probably hated it back in the day but it's actually pretty good and I almost liked it!
Detroit rock city er fínt og Shout it out loud ágætt. Hitt er örlítið vandræðalegt en ekki leiðinlegt. Ætla gefa þessu 2,7.
Generic dad rock music with generic lyrics. It's fine, but nothing special
This is a good-ish album - a couple of classic rock anthems, but most of KISS's stuff is kinda cheesy and forced (a la Great Expectations and Do You Love Me). Beth is a real underrated song though.
A few truly great tracks but the rest is just meh....plus these guys are definitely assholes...
Decent, might have to listen a little again. But none of the songs really struck a chord with me
Not that bad, Detroit Rock City is a bop. Kiss have bops, I have always liked Rock N Roll All Nite since hearing it in a Tony Hawk's soundtrack. But then some of the other tracks are very campy. King of the Night Time World is a clear rip off of Charlie Kelly's The Night Man Cometh. Fave Track: Detroit Rock City 2.6/5
Goofy glam from a band who walked so Slipknot could run (sartorially at least). Inessential listening but entertaining enough for what it is, I suppose. 2.5
Do you love me? I mean no not really. Do you love me? I said no not really. But do you love me? No. 6/10
Kiss. Perhaps the worst band? Yet hideously and undeniably popular. And hugely influential. Many many 8 -13 year olds picked up an instrument watching the theatrics. Some of them went on to become serious and important musicians themselves. Yes it’s musically inferior. Yes it’s ridiculous. But at the right age, at the right time Kiss was awesome. (Note I’ve never been a huge fan but I can’t deny that these guys probably influenced more people to play than Hendrix. Or the Beatles. I say that with much consideration. ) I will say too that Detroit rock city is an awesomely great song. I also think it notable that their label, Casablanca is hugely important for disco (which kiss embrace with I was made for loving you at a different point). Look I want to hate this - gene simmons is what the Irish call a gobshhite. Paul Stanley complained (rightly it seems) about Peter criss’s anti semitism ( a strange stance to hold with Stanley Jewish and Simmons having studied to be a rabbi) Ace and Paul seem ok. And the English did the music that much better. I can’t hate it (even while being appalled at Simmons’ attitudes towards the homeless. Australian rock radio station 2MMM gave Kiss a lifetime ban from radio play after his comments, calling him a 'dickhead' in the press release.) Maybe it’s the 8 year old in me who did see them on tv and think that’s cool. Maybe it’s my love of theatrical rock. Maybe it’s better than I give it credit for. I suppose this is the album to listen to. But as usual a greatest hits would work better. 3 stars.
So cheese you can almost taste it, but it's good.
Not as bad as I expected, so we love that.
3.25
3.5, good classic rock
I was surprised to get a decent amount of enjoyment out of this - maybe because there was no sign of "Rock & Roll All Nite" KISS has never felt like anything special to me, and without the makeup and eccentric outfits they likely would have just been yet another 80s glam rock band. But the songs on this one pack a nice punch, notably the opener "Detroit Rock City". I also wasn't expecting anything like "Beth" - I didn't realize KISS was capable of pulling off a rock ballad. That all being said.. I'm glad grunge came along in the 90s to wipe the slate clean from all the glam/hair rock of the 80s.
Better than I thought it was gonna be.
Wasn't sure what to expect, but it wasn't as bad as I'd thought it would be. My favourite track was "God of Thunder", and I thought that "Great Expectations" was terrible.
So innocent and not dangerous these guys were.
I’ve always thought KISS’ shtick was a little weird, albeit fun I guess?
An alright album, I liked Beth the most.
Good ol' classic butt-rock about money and girls and cars and sex and rawk'n'rawl... but frankly, with the energy a bunch of those songs have, I won't complain at all about it!
That one is a classic to me as I was listening to it when I was a teenager, I saw the band live and had so much fun. Then, I became an adult with a certain taste in music and well... I realize Kiss was more of a brand than a band. Good product, I would say!
This album was a bit all over the place. There were some decent songs and some bad songs. Nothing seemed particularly strong, but I'll give it a low 3 because KISS broke ground with their imagery and showmanship, and because they were good mentors to Rush on the concert tours.
Pretty vanilla rock, actually. Made me appreciate other more talented bands from that era whose experimentation resulted in greatness (eg Floyd, Zeppelin, Queen).
Some pleasant songs
a few catchy tunes and nice bass lines. but there’s something soulless about the whole thing.
My favourite guitarist’s favourite band. Enjoyable. Though it was only on in the background.
KISS had albums?
68/100. A record with a mix of different qualities of rock music. The obvious standout, by a long shot, is "Detroit Rock City."
This album sounds like the soundtrack to a movie named "Rock Band." Every song would go great with a montage. Kiss is an excellent parody band.
Hee hee hee hee = KISS are so silly. Some solid tracks here, but let's be honest, it's the theatre of it all that made them as huge as Simmons tongue. But, that said, music can be incredibly serious at times rather than just FUN and I am here for the fun.
Strutter is kiss’ best song by a country mile and no one can change my mind
If this didn't have Detroit rock city itd be a 2 Kiss sucks
Yeh it was alright, for the 80’s
The best KISS album is a greatest hits album but this one is still fun.
Seeing the movie “Detroit Rock City” at a young age may have primed me for this. Pretty good for 70s “shock rock”.
This is actually quite fun for a hair metal band— but none of the songs stick out to me as particularly great. Maybe I’ll relisten, but I’m unsure if I’ll give KISS the chance
KISS. Enerzijds kijk ik er tegenop, want ik houd niet zo van theatraal. Anderzijds maakt dat theatrale me toch nieuwsgierig.
Detroit Rock City en Shout it Out Loud zijn prima stadionbangers.
Very competent rock'n'roll. 3.4
Beau would be proud. I know, kiss is basically a fake band that was made to sell merchandise, but they're actually pretty good.
Okay. Some of it is cheesy and fun
Some good tracks but pretty same-y.
Pretty basic rock music. 3/5
Plain old rock & roll, nothing special but not bad either
First time listening to a Kiss Album. Looking back on the 70ish Rock bands, is kind of funny because they were considered so hard and cutting edge at the time, but in retrospect they are fairly tame. But they did lay the ground work for a lot of other musicians so I won't take that from them. There fast songs were great, guitars, lyrcis, drums, I enjoyed them all. The ballads however...RIDICULOUS!!!! Beth I hear you are lonely and that I am a bad boyfriend, but I am just going to spend a few hours with my boys. This one was even funnier when it was followed by a song asking the woman if she really loved him ROFL. Great Expectations...so hilarious! This was so 70's-80's rock band, believing that women just would cream for them because they could play the guitar and drums and somehow singing it slowly to me was romantic! Stick to the fast rock songs and I could give it a four, but those ballads were just sooo bad and did not hold up. I want to believe they were so bad it was a joke, but I really don't think so.
It's okay but this album doesn't have any of their best songs. I think KISS is a greatest hits band for me. I really only need Heaven's On Fire, Lick it Up, Strutter, and I Want to Rock and Roll All Night (and Party Everyday). Those are really the best KISS songs. There are no KISS "deep tracks".
Detroit Rock City is a banger. Apparently I'm so clueless about Kiss though that I didn't even realize they sang Beth, lol. The juxtaposition between the "hardcore" God of Thunder and the more ballady Great Expectations right after it cracked me up. These guys don't take themselves too seriously, right? They are over the top with their "edgy" image but their music just feels like poppy rock and roll. Anyway, it was fine.
Well now. That was undeniably quite good fun. I wouldn't choose to listen to it almost ever, but if I was to have a stupid house party I think I'd put that on and everyone would enjoy it. I'm unlikely to do that, but I guess now the option is there.
I'm pretty sure I've never heard a complete KISS album before, and I had no intentions on changing that. I have to say that I enjoyed this much, much more than I expected though. I'll never be a huge fan, but this has aged much better than feared.
Not bad rock album 6/10
Has some fun songs, but not everything is great. Very mediocre
Sure, not bad. Also not great
General impression: fun. Better than I expected Detailed review: I dunno, I’ve never been into KISS. It’s the face paint, I suppose. The sort of elaborate, trademarked image. Turns me off. But of course they’re better musicians than that impression gives them credit for. This album had a lot of great variety and I appreciated that. Some prog, some ballads, some straightforward rockers. Good stuff. Deeper thoughts (context): nah Score: 3 Number of albums left to review: 941 Number of albums from the list I’d consider “must-listens”: 36 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 24 (including this one)
Rock by the numbers. Vermakelijk, maar geen hoogvlieger.
Quick and fun enough, but there isn't too much going on to make me go back to it.
Pretty hilarious at times but also not that good.
Exactly what I think a kiss album sounds like
This is so corny
Whatever you think about Kiss, Detroit Rock City is a banger. Great Expectations is immature. Beth is a classic. The rest of the album isn't bad, but it's not incredible.
3.4 2x catchup 11/5/2024
KISS were always a revered band for me growing up. I didn't grow up during their heyday or anything, but my dad & other family/friends around his age always referred to them in admiration and thus I was just always indirectly exposed to them. Hard to ignore their stage getup too. Some recognizable songs in this album (I've always liked "God of Thunder"). The rest is pretty experimental for KISS standards. "Beth" is the standout in this regard, being an uncharacteristically tender ballad coming from KISS (and sung/written by the drummer to boot). The rest is honestly a bit forgettable when stacked up against other glam metal from that era. I'm sure there are better album representatives for showcasing KISS, but they always struck me as more of a "greatest hits" group if that makes any sense.
Fun but nothing I’ll come back to.
KISS are a greatest hits band to me, I don't need their studio albums in my life
Classic.
Skemmtilegt rokk sem eldist bara furðu vel. Beth er svo auðvitað algjör vangalagsnegla.
I once worked in a warehouse next to a huge KISS fan. He had a full Gene Simmons costume he'd wear every Halloween (and probably around the house on weekends). So I'm sure I've heard their whole studio and live album discography at least twice. Unfortunately most of these songs are now inextricably tied to one of the most depressing jobs I've ever had and one of the most annoying coworkers I've ever worked next to. So while there are a few good songs on here, I can never get past the negative side that this band conjures up. Three is the best I can do. Not sure it would deserve much more otherwise as there are a good amount of duds.
Love KISS, absolutely legendary band on stage but absolutely not an album band. Destroyer has the same problem as most of their albums, half of it is great but the other half is pretty dire.
Is this the most overrated band of all time? Boring riffs. Boring drums. They had the rely on gimmicks to keep people interested, but even that falls short for me. Better than experimental psychedelic rock music at least.
As someone who doesn't listen to Kiss or similar bands, I feel kinda deceived. From the album name and cover I expected something more along the lines of Seether. But I liked it a bit
this was just alright to me. i expected it to be more of a wacky fun rockin' time, but the album cover made promises that the album itself didn't deliver.
boy, kiss really is a singles band, huh? even my favorite song of theirs (detroit rock city, though some days it's strutter) isn't enough to save this from being fairly mediocre and boring overall. favorites: detroit rock city, god of thunder, shout it out loud
A good study album. Bangers for it mostly not being in English
Very fun album.
First listen. Listened to the original, 2012 resurrected versions and the 2021 45th Anniversary super deluxe versions. Think I prefer one of the newer versions, but all of them were great. Three favourites without a doubt are “Detroit Rock City”, “Shout It Out Loud” and “Beth”. Kiss was on of my dad’s favourite band and he showed me and my brother their music when we were young, so they hold a special place from my childhood. Is this a good album? Maybe not, but it brings out nostalgia for me so 🤷
kinda feel like this band holds a lot of sentimental/nostalgic value for people who grew up in the 70s, who had their FIRST exposure to hard rock with this band simply because of how popular they were and how unlike anything else at the time their stage presence was chances are, if your favorite band's members grew up during the time, they're GONNA mention KISS as one of their early influences but nowadays if you're just getting into hard rock or heavy metal you can easily get bands that rock harder than this for you personally, and their past popularity or stage presence wouldn't matter much because you weren't there at the time and for you Gene Simmons is an old douche bag more than anything or maybe it's just this record because KISS definitely have a ton of other great songs to their name, they're just not all on this album what i want to say is this record was probably much much more of an essential in the past than it is now oh well it's a pretty short listen either way i definitely hear a lot of things here that The Replacements would be massively influenced by though
6.3
This album was so middle-of-the-road, it was almost funny. Not bad but definitely not a standout either.
Phew! Although I do hope this is the only Kiss album we get in this collection, it would have been a shame if we didn't get some Kiss in this project. I was never a big fan of them growing up, but even then I recognized that they had clearly paved the way for all the hair metal bands that followed, and for that they earned my respect (and likely the groans and hatred of many others). Listening to this album now, I also realize that part of my reluctance to embrace them was that they simply didn't rock as hard as I wanted them to--I often feel like they were *pretending* to be a hard rock/heavy metal band, but really they wanted to be either a stadium-rock band with makeup and platform boots (a hard-rockin' Boston), or maybe more of a Meatloaf-style act ("Great expectations" and "Do you love me?" great examples). Plus it doesn't help that they didn't have a lot of range either musically or lyrics-wise. But what outfits! Out of the songs on this album, "Detroit rock city" is of course a lasting classic, and "Flaming youth" was also a fun (and a little cringey) listen; the rest were pretty nondescript (sorry, "Beth"). But I'm still glad they were included, and it's kind of satisfying reading that the producer of this album put them through a musical boot camp, as apparently they needed the kick in the pants.
Revved up on a Wednesday
God bless 'em but not my thing
Vintage jock rock. I prefer the live stuff.
Hyvää.. Hyvää Päivää...
Notable tracks: Detroit Rock City, Great Expectations, Shout It Out Loud
Sure !
A Kiss album through and through. Arena rock and songs that all kind of sound the same, but still manage to be fun. Certainly feels dated by modern standards, but a fun and decent listen overall. Top tracks: Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out, Beth
There's a youthful energy in this record that I think is pretty special, and magical. It's like a bunch of young boys go in their garage for their first band jam, put on some silly rockstar costumes and makeup, and when they start playing this is the sound that they hear in their heads. That's my audiovisual experience I have when I hear this album. At the same time, I wouldn't say this is their best record, and it's hard to figure out what one really is. This has "Beth" on it, their true great ballad, the album "Dynasty" has "I Was Made For Lovin' You", "Dressed To Kill" has "Rock And Roll All Nite". So if you could only pick one, which would you pick? It's a hard question. They are one of those bands where you think that a greatest hits would be the album that needs to be on here, but I think having a greatest hits on this list kind of defeats the purpose a little bit. That's what makes rating this album a bit hard for me. "Beth" is the big track on this record, but it's far from my favorite Kiss song, it's maybe like 6th or 7th best. I do however really like "Shout It Out Loud", but even that is maybe my 5th best Kiss song. So where does that put this album? I think if I gave it a 3 that would be doing it a disservice for how monumental Kiss as a band are. I'm afraid of this being the only record by them on here and giving them only a 3 when it's one of the most famous bands ever. A 5 feels a little too high for me though, because it's not really a perfect or near-perfect record. It has it's moments, but I'd rather listen to other Kiss tracks before this collection. I'm going with a 3. It's solid rock tracks but unfortunately aren't the best representation of the band.
Not classic. Not great. But fun.
It’s fine, it just doesn’t do much for me.
I always felt that the look promised something that the sound just didn’t deliver for me.
Very fun glam rock, i was introduced to KISS when i was young from family and games like guitar hero, just never explored their albums much. I get how theyre more than a brand, kind of like a sensation or ‘characters’. 3.2
Most of this album does present some great hard rock songs and party anthems which are fun to listen to, but it leaves something to be desired. There were some odd choices in the production/mixing of the album that left a bad taste for me. It seems like they wrote about 30 minutes of solid songs but needed to justify more to release a full album, so instead of adding another song they just added a few minutes of radio static at the beginning and ends of the album, which sort of ruined the experience of listening to this as an album. I’d rather listen to the single edit of “Detroit Rock City” than the version presented here. There’s also the weird choice of adding children’s giggling to “God of Thunder”, which I think would have been better without that and the other overdubbed sound effects.
Like a couple songs. I like that this was consider dangerous, boundary pushing rock at the time.
Góð steming, klassísk lög en ekkert sem verður í rotation
Easy listen. Some classic songs but most of this album is pretty forgettable
This one falls into that category of fun but cheesy, less substantial rock. A progenitor of 80s hair metal. Didn’t mind listening today but I don’t feel I need to return to this
Everyone in rock wants to be outrageous - it's good for business. But despite the makeup and Gene Simmons' vile posturings, the music is tame, almost poppy soft rock. At its best, there are some catchy hooks, but in the main it's just average.
1976!!! 10 canciones y 38 minutos de "espectáculo". Nunca los escuché con interés. Suena bien, no los habría puesto tan lejos en el tiempo, juraría que eran más de los años 80. Me he guardado "King of the night time world" y ·God of thunder".
-party rock (fuck you, LMFAO) -very weird Bob Ezrin production on this one -not my type of rock n roll -I dont hate this one tho, just dissapointing -not sure I would listen to it in full again, outside of a few songs -I do like the cover -favorite songs: Detroit Rock City, God Of Thunder, Shout It Out Loud -least favorite song: Rock 'N' Roll Party
3 chord rock with a gimmick
glamorous NPC rock
It was aight
Fun, glam-y, rockin.
Interesting to see on this list. They are before my time, but my impression of KISS is they are more entertainers than musicians.
KISS: Kinda Insipid, (But) Some (Good) Songs // KISS: Kinda Inspired, (And yet) Some (Bad) Songs.
A few songs are enjoyable, but I was never a big fan of this band. I never really understood the hype.
3.5/5
Some bangers but the diversity of styles doesn’t really work for me
Really fun and kick-ass record from a legendary group.
109/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
Not for me, but it wasn't terrible.
Iconic album from an iconic band. Say what you will about their songs, but they knew how to sell themselves and they went all in on it. Worked out pretty well for them, and they have quite a few great tracks as well. I really wish this album was better though, great highlights, the lighter songs are still really good along the rockers, but the album is too up and down in quality to earn anything higher than 3
Being a KISS fan in the 70s must have been wild, but this is 2024 and there’s no reason every song needs to be based around the power of rock and roll.
a lot better than i was expecting. im still not exactly a kiss fan but this was fun. it gets repetitive and cheesy a few times though which keeps this at a high 6/10
I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, some of it was good enough, kind of boring, a little above average but something about it kept it down for me. Meh.
It's very solid rock but not many songs stand out too much to me
Surprisingly tam for the fit parent threw in the 70s and 80s.
Kiss was my introduction to rock music since a young age. Was it a good album? Eh not really. But without Kiss I woule have never have been introduced into rock
They scare me a little, very Jojo Siwa coded (I know she copied them). Favourites: great expectations, flaming youth, Beth. I appreciate the length of the album. Music was just okay, a little forgettable for me. 3/5
ganska kul och bra men det är lite för tråkigt emellanåt. behöver nog en lyssning till
Wasn't bad, but I would't say it was good either. Just a balance in between
KISS has always been such a sales tactic during my life that it’s never felt like a real band. I guess it is one.
It was fine. The album sounded very similar. Could be fun to drink to outside. Would be fun to see live.
Feel good classic rock that reminds me of a world I never actually knew, the 1970s, but I did watch Detroit Rock City the movie as a kid and feel like that's pretty close to actually being there. Care-free, gimmicky, and corny, can you believe this scared people?
try not to say “they sang this on glee” challenge failed
It's dumb. So dumb. But it has enough charm to get it by. There are some bangers for sure but also some duds. Just don't pay attention to the oh so crappy lyrics and ignore everything you know about the individuals in the band (especially Gene but Paul is pretty bad too) and you can have a reasonably good time here.
Peak Kiss album…. God of Thunder fun… surprised by Beth
Es ist eben Hardrock. Aber zugegebenermaßen einer von den besseren... Tolle Ballade "Beth" Starker Sänger
feels unfocused and doesn't lean into one thing completely, leaving the album as a mediocre snoozefest that doesn't know if it wants to play it safe or go fully into hard hitting guitars
3.5
Some great songs but a couple eh songs. Ez 3.5
Three great songs on here 3.5
Strong 3
Decent album, nothing special. Another rock and roll album to me, never been a huge kiss fan. 3/5
I was actually surprised by the content of this album, I assumed it was just going to be filled with classic rock tropes but I was pleased to hear softer tunes.
After reading some of the other reviews I expected to hate this but I don't. It is just not interresting enough for that. It is incredibly boring and instantly forgettable.
Apart from Detroit Rock City this album was pretty middle of the road. Nothing to monumental happened during it's short run time.
It’s not bad, but I am underwhelmed
I laughed about the idea of a Kiss album on this list. They're almost a spoof band. But they had significance and it was a fun trip.
My parents think I'm crazy and they hate the things I do I'm stupid and I'm lazy, man, if they only knew How flaming youth will set the world on fire Flaming youth, our flag is flying higher and higher and higher My uniform is leather, and my power is my age I'm gettin' it together to break out of my cage Cause flaming youth will set the world on fire Flaming youth will set the world on fire Flaming youth, our flag is flying higher and higher and higher 3/5
Dad’s fav.
Actually not bad glam rock
I’ve never really loved listening to Kiss. I’m not sure if it’s the face paint and tongue stuff or if it’s just dated but they’ve always just seemed annoying. Listening to this album showed me that I can handle them in doses. I didn’t hate this album but I wouldn’t revisit more than a couple songs on here. I also find it pretty hilarious that Detroit rock city is hardly used as a Detroit anthem but yet journeys don’t stop believing is all because of one line in the song. Just shows how much more people like journey than kiss I suppose. 5.8/10
When I was 10 years old this sounded kinda cool… now as I approach 60 this sounds plodding and mushy. The sound is inexcusably terrible. I guess Beth was a hit simply because it sounds like a unique voice. Hard to even rate a 3 but I guess it gets something for cultural significance.
These guys are OK, I liked one song 3 stars
KISS clearly rocks. But they’re very silly. I think as someone who was born in 1981 and really came of age musically in the 90s, I really only need a few bands to scratch this itch. ZZ Top followed by KISS…well, I guess it’s time to grow out my mullet and hop in my Camaro to go bust up some mailboxes.
"Destroyer" is the fourth album by American rock band Kiss. It was a departure from the raw sound of their first three albums as producer Bob Ezrin introduced sound effects, strings, screaming children and a children's choir. And if you don't know, Kiss is Paul Stanley (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Gene Simmons (bass, backing and lead vocals), Peter Criss (drums, backing and lead vocals) and Ace Frehley (lead guitar, backing vocals). Commercially, the album hit #11 on the US charts. There were mixed reviews critically but mostly positive. Sound effects of a guy watching TV who goes out for a drive opens "Detroit Rock City." Drums kick in and there is an echoing guitar. Layered guitars later on. Paul Stanley on vocals telling the story of a guy bored and cruising around. I don't think it ends well as there's a car crash at thd end. Hey, we get the children screaming in "God of Thunder." More of a heavy metal guitar. I don't how many bands these lyrics would work for as Gene Simmons describes how he was born on Mt. Olympus and commands the listener to kneel before him. Stanley and Simmons take dual lead vocals on "Shout It Out Loud." Their most anthemic song on the album. Catchy vocal and musical choruses. Simple lyrics. One of their best songs. It's Peter Criss' turn for lead vocals on the piano ballad "Beth" This is the song that saved the album commercially to some extent. Big production with a flute and strings. Lighters out of course. I liked this album as an eight-year old and it sounded pretty good today. The big production is rather ridiculous: strings and a symphony for "Beth" and "Great Expectations. " It worked for me. The lyrics are simple targeting their audience. The anthem songs are catchy. I'm not going to grab any new Kiss army members or distract any existing ones today. For me, this is up there with "Kiss" and "Dressed to Kill" as their best.
Wasn't a fan then, haven't changed. The only singer who could get away with dressing up did it in support of the music: Peter Gabriel during the early days of Genesis.
# Playlist track - Shout it out loud # Notes - The 1:30 intro to "Detroit Rock City" (which is a great track!) is silly, and should be in a separate track. No way I'm willing to listen to that every time I want to enjoy the music. -1 star. - It's not a bad album. Some good tracks in there, but not great either.
slightly underwhelming after the first couple songs but still fun
Have never really listened to Kiss seriously before. It was a ton of fun! I wish it was grittier, like their debut 'Kiss.' But maybe that's a remastering issue. Fun times!
Huge kick of nostalgia, but that being said. I go in honestly and try to listen more critically. The mix is glaringly atrocious unfortunately. But it's pretty enjoyable, albeit quite mediocre in musical performing and lyrics. KISS was and always will be a spectacle to see live, but listening their albums is quite a chore. Standout tracks: Detroit Rock City, King Of The Night Time World, Sweet Pain, Beth, 5,5 out of 10
Unfortunately I didn't really like it. It is mediocre at best. I think KISS has that whole nostalgia thing going for them because if you're being honest their music is not the best. And "Great Expectations" is one of the worst rock songs I have ever listened to.
Seriously, it was a bit boring. A few good riffs, but all in all just mediocre. Goes to show Kiss are more the show and the image than their music
SOI GOOD
Ok 3/5
Kiss at their best. Including the best ballad of the 76's Beth
I just never got into Kiss. They are always just ok to me with a couple of shining songs. Given I'm not super into hard rock anymore, but even when I was much more into the genre they didn't do it for me. "Beth" is one of the greatest power ballads of all time, but it is also just the epitome of having a power ballad in the middle of a rock album trend in the late 70s and early 80s. It's a good album with some great moments, it's just not an all time great for me.
Classic but kinda tame these days
I was never a big fan. I recognized a few of the songs. But didn't really move me in any way
Witzig
Apart of a couple of classic Ms the album is not that good
Kinda silly but fun enough to listen to
Never been a kiss fan, but I like a couple hits for that kind of nostalgic factor. Opening track is catchy... I like that little bass hook. I can't argue with this one being on the list, but it's not really my thing. KISS kinda missed me. 3/5
I think there’s a limited window in one’s life where they can be introduced to Kiss and have it click. I am well outside that window, but I can appreciate that this wasn’t made for me. These songs sound really basic, dated and dumb to me, but I’m sure that misses the point.
Without the makeup and theatrics as a distraction, it is really just straightforward 70's rock. Nothing special, but engaging with hook-y lyrics and the requisite sweet Rock-n-Roll love song (Beth) acting as a palate cleanser toward the end.
Detroid Rock City is a banger. I didn't really care for Great Expectations or Beth. Do You Love Me is too repetitive.
I recognize a few of the songs. Over all I enjoyed it listening to the whole album, but not my style. I think I have a lot of baggage around KISS. Not my type of band, as they have been very commercialized and associated with philosophies that are inconsistent with what I value. I would not put this on a favourite list.
Not the greatest lyricists. Good for dancing at a party or in a club.
I never know what to expect from a KISS album, but they always deliver what I need and nothing more than expected.
Listenable rock. Kiss has no instrumental or vocal talent but can put on a show.
I forgot how great a song Shout It Out Loud was
Surprised me. Didn’t expect to like this one that much. But it was quite good. Not great, but good. Just some above average hard rock. 7/10 Top 3: 1. Detroit Rock City 2. Shout It Out Loud 3. King Of The Night Time World
You probably didn't know this, Heath, but if you check the Grand Ballroom and see which group is booked there this evening, I think your tune may change a wee bit. Mini Kiss. The cover band. Yeah, I'm not with them. -Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 (2015)
This was more atmospheric than I was expecting. Unfortunately, the lackluster vocals and repetitive nature drag this album down, although it's still infectious enough to make you want to turn off your brain and rock out. Favorite track: King of the Night Time World
It was alright. Not overly memorable, not terrible. Maybe a little repetitive.
Cheesy
Some serviceable songs, but not really a Kiss fan.
very decent album without any timeless hits
Pretty solid early rock. Not bangers, but listenable and enjoyable.
very just ok
3/5. Although, yes it can be very cheesy on most days, I would jam to this. The lyrics are so simple and the instrumentation isn't crazy as well but throwing this on at 11 really shows where Kiss are coming from. However, there are songs that go on too long despite only being less than 4 minutes long. The hits are great but not enough to bring this above a 3.
It's been about 46 years since I've listened to this album, courtesy of my older brother who blasted this album on an 8-track stereo. Detroit, Rock City, and Beth (such a contrast from the other songs), merit this 4 stars. King of the Night Time World, Shout It Out Loud, and Do You Love Me are others I liked. Flaming Youth was a "new" discovery listening to it with the adult perspective. Lyrics are not the deepest, and a couple of filler songs in there, but most are pretty rockin' numbers.
2.8/5 Yeah that was Kiss. Best track: Beth
Detroit rock city might be their best and most impactful track. And Beth is at least there second most popular. The rest may well all be the same song. It's funny that back when I was really into Kiss I was too young to understand how horny the songs were, and now it's clear you really need to be an 11 year old straight boy to appreciate them. The whole thing would be substantially elevated if they (at least Gene and Paul) had a bit more awareness of their silliness, even while they were making millions.
Classic
Ehh it's fine. Pretty tame. Not the largest fan of KISS as they always come across as very, very goofy. Hey at least it's short.
KISS has always been a band based more on marketing than a band based on musicianship...at least to me. I think this album needs to be heard and probably should be on this list, as the history of music can't be complete without a listen to a KISS album. Saying that, I would give this album a 5-star review for inclusion reasons, but the music is "eh" for me. There is good stuff on here, but a song like "Great Expectations" is one gruff Gene Simmons voice from being a power ballad from the 80's. Points for foresight, I guess. Detroit Rock City, Flaming Youth, Shout it Out Loud and Do You Love Me are really good tracks. So listen, see what you think and then go buy a KISS doll/t-shirt/lunch box since that's really what they want you to do.
High camp, so so music.
The best and worst of rock n roll on one album
Pretty average
1. Detroit Rock City - random intro but the actual song was ok pretty boppy. 2. King of the Night Time World - interesting transition from the previous song. 3. God of Thunder - I don’t really like the way this one is sung, the music is ok. 4. Great Expectations - I didn’t like the lyrics of this one or the sound at all really. 5. Flaming Youth - not too bad but don’t love it. 6. Sweet Pain - not great I liked the guitar tho 7. Shout It Out Loud - I had heard this one before, not too bad pretty catchy. 8. Beth - I heard this in Glee lol…didn’t like it then or now haha…wasn’t coming here for ballads 9. Do You Love Me - I don’t actually mind the chorus of this one, it’s not too bad. 10. Rock and Roll Party - instrumental. I hadn’t really listened to kiss apart from their hits so it was interesting for me. It wasn’t too bad, definitely the sound I was expecting so wasn’t too shocked. I don’t love the singing style but it’s good for what it is, definitely influential.
Dads favorite band as a kid. Detroit rock city and Beth are obviously the best. The rest was alright. Rating: 3.4
Every time I hear the song Detroit Rock City, it reminds me of the movie of the same name. The movie follows some teenagers who are trying to get tickets to see KISS in concert. I'm not sure why this version of the song had a 1:30 skit about someone getting into a car and going for a drive, but the song itself is fantastic! There's also a 1:25 song at the end of the album (Rock 'N' Roll Party) that is just crowd cheering noises. Fuck skits. KISS were so commercialized. Like comically so. I don't know why they became the focus of the parent groups calling them satanic. They're one of the lightest, most synthesized rock groups, almost verging on pop rock or some shit. Keith Moon lived a more rock and roll lifestyle than any member of KISS, and Alice Cooper was beheading himself on stage most nights, but KISS's pyrotechnics and Gene Simmons' long ass tongue was just too much for the parents. Maybe it's because KISS sang about banging things, but fuck so did the Who (Squeeze Box for example). You know how The Monkees were a farcical pop band who's only reason for existing was a tv show? KISS was the Monkees of rock music. Favourite songs: Shout It Out Loud, God of Thunder, Detroit Rock City, Beth Least favourite songs: Great Expectations, Rock 'N' Roll Party 3/5
Fun listen! I found that the recording of this record sounded almost as if it was live? Especially on songs like God of Thunder. I had to check to make sure I wasn't listening to a live version but nope! Surprised to hear I recognized a lot of these songs, even though these aren't many of the typical really popular KISS songs. Good album.
Yeah, I'm not an American Teenager so totally did not get into Kiss. But it is a fun listen and I can see the appeal. Fave track: Detroit Rock City
I'm too young and too British to have ever gone through a KISS phase. I can appreciate this in a kind of Spinal Tap way, I guess, but lawd, don't focus too much on the lyrics! 😆 Fave track - eh, "King of the Night Time World" maybe? I am the kinda douchebag that liked the album intro and outro sound collages more than any of the songs, though. ✌️
Album starts strong but quickly descends into a parody of itself. When the songs on Spinal Tap hit harder you know it's not a good sign
Solid Americana heavy rock, wiith a typical 70’s sound, but nothing exceptional. Beth is a nice ballade though
It's pretty impressive that they were able to turn elementary song writing into a career spanning 24 albums. They def have some solid hits here but most of this album feels like filler.
Great classic KISS. Prior to ever listening to them, seeing their outfits and their album artwork, I was expecting one thing from them, and then I heard them and was totally at a loss.
Pretty unusual to be honest - not what I expected at all. Theatrical rather than Glam. It's not bad really.
It is proper rock. But it doesn't get to me fully. Nothing breathtaking.
This is a tough one. KISS is so cheesy, but they started out with a cool, badass concept. Gene Simmons is just the grossest, most immature person. His obnoxious opinions on music are laughable because he’s only just barely a musician himself. This is probably the best KISS has ever been musically? I do love Detroit Rock City, that’s a great song. But the rest is just formulaic rubbish. I’m going to be kind though and split the score right down the middle because I did have some nostalgic fun while listening.
The rockers are fun, the ballads are bad
There are a few really nice songs and some that can be skipped. Nothing exceptional here.
AJ: Rock City rocks. Beth rules because of Paul Rudd in Role Models. Shout it Out Loud sounds like it was made for That 70’s show.
It was fine but definitely don't want to listen to it again
besser als erwartet, aber trotzdem nix besonderes
For some reason, I was obsessed with kiss as a small child despite only ever listening to two of their songs, one of which is one this album (shout it out loud). However, I never really stuck with them as I grew up and haven't listened to them in quite a while so I found my nostalgia levels to be minimal. If it had also included rock and roll all night it would've been a perfect kiss album for me. As it stands, however, this was a cheesy glam rock album that has the meatloaf energy (though not as fun) of always feeling like charismatic rock anthems made specifically for 14 year olds. As a 21 year old, I now get why 5 year old me liked it so much because the lyrics and sound are a completely inoffensive shiny object that sounds nice if completely shallow. Crazy that weirdos in the 70s and 80s thought this was too evil and inappropriate for the general public when it's actually suitable for ages 2 and up.
Honestly better than I expected. I though this would be some unbearable garbage "pop" rock, but it was pretty tame. I can't say I want to listen to this again, but I did not mind this first time.
Embarrassingly over-the-top tosh. It's hard to not rock out with your cock out. Or jam out with your clam out, whichever is more comfortable for you.
Some classic songs here. It's certainly a vibe. I'm not sure I'd want to listen to this particular album again though. KISS has better music than this on offer.
i probably haven’t listened to this album in over 25 years, so i felt like i was coming into this with a fresh set of ears. this should be interesting. first and foremost, KISS is a great live band. their stage show is indeed a sight to behold. case in point, the band was struggling early in until the release of KISS - alive! and then word started circulating about the power of their live show. KISS is an example of a band that continued to put out albums in order to justify touring. there’s nothing necessarily wrong with that; in my opinion, KISS music just translates better in a live setting. destroyer was the first studio album after the release of KISS - alive! and so it was bound to do well. this album is chock full of live staples (“detroit rock city”, “god of thunder”, “shout it out loud”, “beth”). and with bob ezrin producing, it was bound to make the band sound better. one thing glaringly obvious: “paul songs” are much better than “gene songs”. gene simmons has always had an ENORMOUS ego, even in 1976 when the band was still trying to find its way. just listen to “great expectations” and try not to laugh at how full of himself he is and how hokey the song comes across. KISS as musicians and songwriters are PAINFULLY average. paul is a decent singer, i guess. i can’t help but think it is merely a vanity project when gene takes lead vocals, because he really can’t sing. and the band playing their instruments just seem to go through the motions when playing. to be honest, if it wasn’t for the reputation of their live shows and their decades of merchandising anything they can put their name on, i don’t know if they would still be around. destroyer has a few decent songs with ample amounts of filler. to put this album on an “album you must listen to before you die” list seems a bit misguided. if you must represent KISS on this list, KISS - alive! would be the obvious choice.
Kiss my ass
Some great songs and some super lame-o songs even this out to a 3.
Cheesy, sleazy, and just entertaining enough to please me, this album had me chuckling and enjoying at least the first half. It took me back to a simpler time playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, unlocking the KISS level. At 16 years old, this was one of the coolest albums in the world to me. Anyway, hail satan and all that.
Wake up, losers, it’s cock rock o’clock!
This album changed Rock n Roll forever. Looking back on it now, it is hard to remember just how much of a big deal this album was. Standouts: Beth, Shout it Out Loud, Detroit Rock City Good to listen to, but it has lost a bit of 'bigness' after all these years. 3.5/5
I'm a bit surprised to find this album on here instead of Alive!, just because that was such a monster hit album for them. Anyway, the songs are simplistic, the lyrics are completely inane, but if you don't take it too seriously it's kind of fun. They did know how to write songs that had a solid hook. 3 stars.
Beth!
Well I wasn’t sure what to expect from this. I obviously know of Kiss, but more as a parody of themselves. I was kind of hoping for balls out, gleeful, glam kind of rock and roll and was a little let down by what I heard. Won’t be joining the Kiss army any time soon I’m glad to say.
Pretty decent album but nothing to write home about. I put it in the background and kind of forgot about it. Great Expectations did stand out for me.
It was a good album. Several songs were recognizable. I would listen to some songs again but not the whole album.
Straightforward 70s hard rock album. Detroit Rock City is the clear highlight, I like the guitar solos on that one. Other than that the songs are simple and catchy, however the vocals are goofy at times. God of Thunder is guilty of this, although the riff is memorable.
Corny lyrics, annoying voice but kiss still manage to pump out some decent songs though. Band had good energy and fun style of playing but there is only so much of that you can do before it gets boring and bored I got. Struggled to pay attention in the second half, I could probably do with another listen though because I really wasn’t paying attention. 3.5/5 (Cover is a 4/5)
I enjoyed the rock part- I did really miss it given what we’ve had. The songs got a little repetitive but it didn’t bother me that much. It was classic.
Realized that I disliked KISS fans more than KISS. The album was decent.
Good
Not Behd
Heavy metal ñoño. Para mí no llega a ser heavy metal. Se aproxima más a baladas pop. Un 3.
