Reviews (page 9 of 13)

He sounded like a parody of himself at times

I did not use a private session for Spotify. I never got into Elvis, don't plan on it. I have heard these songs before, classics, but I won't be intentionally listening to them again.

Yep, it's Elvis!

https://youtu.be/t5Tg_-LDyfg?si=3b8QVwn8z2yul-c_

Energiek, maar niet helemaal mijn ding.

I understand why this was so popular. The slower songs are a million times better than the upbeat ones though. Elvis squeaks during the fast songs, kinda like Goofy.

Why I think 'One-Sided Love Affair' would fit perfectly on Will Wood's The Normal Album. Good album for its time, I think. Nothing groundbreaking. "Money Honey" will always be a Lady Gaga song, sorry.

alright I guess but not his best

This is cool, Elvis being Elvis, doing his Elvis thing. 12 quick tracks in under 30 minutes. Plenty of reverb to go around. Entertaining the whole way through. Anything spectacular? No, not really. But it’s Elvis so it’s cool.

Not my cup of tea but it was a fun listen.

Debut album of covers. Sounds great but I never loved him.

There’s something lacking and disjointed about this album that I can’t quite put my finger on. I’m just not sure if it’s curated very well as an album. I love the rock and roll stuff which is raw and edgy but the ballady type songs are a bit of a drag and not as good as Elvis at Sun.

Not entirely my bag, but it must have been quite something to hear this in 1956. Tutti Frutti a highlight

Classic Elvis. Only a few tunes that I recognized

You can really hear how young and different Elvis sounds on this album. The original rock album hit the stands and set off the great divide in music. Just look how far it has come since. Short sweet, and fun

For some reason it is just now bothering me that streaming services don’t show song writing credits. Thank you Elvis, for bringing this to my attention.

Elvis is NOT overrated lmao, I don't know what some people in the comments are smoking. Elvis was made by producers for sure, but the man was a sensation. What he did was groundbreaking, rebellious and unprecedented, things we now give for granted because everbody is pushing it to the extreme and breaking new limits now a days, which is getting boring. Elvis opened the door for The Beatles and many others to get inspired. So yeah this first album is not "nothing", it's objectively good as well.

Not my king

Jag förstår att folk kanske tycker att det här var det bästa sedan skivat bröd. Men det här har väl åldrats så där. Lite väl mycket kärleksförklaringar...

I mean it's Elvis.

Undeniably influential, but realistically I’m not going to come back to it a great deal I don’t think. I’d rather stick the Little Richard record back on, which I scored higher, so it has to be a 3.something. Enjoyed it either way!

This is underwhelming to me somehow. I find his voice lacking in personality and depth. It’s all a bit pedestrian. I never expected I would say that but here we are

Some solid Elvis hits, but it also lacked a lot of the polish I think it would have had a few years later. Some of that lead guitar was... not very impressive.

Some really good tracks. Such a classic. Short and to the point tracks that instantly pick up. A lot that I didn't really care for too though. Highlights: Blue Suede Shoes I'm Gonna Sit right down and Cry

you can clearly tell what Paul McCartney took inspiration from

It's an alright album. I've never been a fan of Elvis. This didn't turn me around. Universally, all of the cover songs on this album are worse than the original versions by the original artists. And this is the problem I have across the board with Elvis' discography: his most popular songs in the early part of his career are mediocre covers of largely black artists.

3 - not his best imo

3/5. It's always hard with albums that are not necessarily bad but feels like it's a classic because of the context. It's impossible not to view albums through certain perspectives and biases. Elvis was always the king in my middle class suburban life but with the knowledge of more music and experiences, including the ones stolen from, it's hard to appreciate it in the same way. The long and short of it, this is a good album but I think you can look at it's influence for it's importance and less the actual quality because it's good but not perfect. I do respect the release of 1956 with everything else going on during that time but it's not one I'm putting on often. It gets a nod of approval and then we move on. Best Song: Blue Suede Shoes, Trying to Get To You, I Got A Woman

As this is my first Elvis album I feel like I should say a few things. It's a shame I have no things to say. Favourite track: Blue Suede Shoes.

Second Elvis album in a week, it's more or less the same thing. This is his debut album and is probably my favorite of the three that I've gotten on here, but it still just doesn't do a ton for me on the whole. It's mostly covers (not surprising for the time) and is definitely a bit more raw than some of his later stuff. This one does have a few famous songs, including the opener "Blue Suede Shoes". "I'm Counting on You" comes next, and it doesn't seem to a super big song of his but I thought it was the standout on here. "Blue Moon" has a nice vibe too. If the other two Elvis albums on here are 3s this is probably a 3.5, but not sure there's enough to round up for me. This one is also notable for the cover art, which is both iconic and has been mimicked a few times over the years by other artists (most famously The Clash's London Calling). Favorite song: I'm Counting on You Other: Blue Suede Shoes, I Got a Woman, I Love You Because, Just Because, Tutti Frutti, Trying to Get to You, I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin'), Blue Moon 10/28/24

Blue Suede Shoes 4 I'm Counting on You 3.4 I Got a Woman 3.5 One Sided Love Affair 3.2 I Love You Because 3 Just Because 3 Tutti Frutti 3.5 Tryin' to Get to You 3.3 I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You) 3.2 I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin') 3 Blue Moon 3.1 Money Honey 3.2 Score: 3.283333333

Elvis is ok. It’s complicated.

I have found that it's really hard to rate oldies like this one. Obviously, Elvis' influence on popular music cannot be overstated, but his music has grown old faster than some of the other albums from the same era. It's good to hear it and understand its place and importance, but its still not really my thing to go back to and enjoy. 3/5

I had higher expectations for this and was a little disappointed. Too cartoony for me.

Vividly remember this when it came out — JK, I was nine months old. Outside of Blue Suede Shoes, this was just so-so, but gets a 3 up from a 2 just based on its historical significance. Even though my parents kinda liked/tolerated the Beatles in 1963-1964 when they became huge, I imagine to the extent they knew of Elvis or this album in 1956 they would have shit bricks over it at that point in time. You go, E!

Funny to think millions went crazy for this.

This exceeded my expectations! It's got pretty good range, and a bunch of enduring songs. I don't think I'd ever come back to it voluntarily, but this held up far better than I thought it would.

Very fun. Felt like some of the tracks were annoying but some standouts. Could see myself playing this in the background while doing just about anything. Fav Songs: I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry, Blue Suede Shoes

This is the Elvis that the Beatles would have listened to and wanted to emulate when they were still trying to make a name for themselves. Elvis was OK as was this album but I've never been much of a fan.

All good. He was a great artist and this album good

Some good, timeless songs. A trio back in time that shows the importance of Elvis and his impact on rock and roll. A lot of boring, repetitive music, however.

More of a greatest hits type of guy

Quite fun, liked that the songs were short and easy to listen to.

Blue Suede Shoes and Tutti Frutti are still good and there's some other moments on here I liked. It's never gonna be my favorite Elvis album but I'm trying to imagine what this sounded like back in 1956.

Not a huge early Elvis fan, but was an easy listen.

Listened Before? N Interesting is the word I'd use to describe this one. Elvis' first album and you can tell they hadn't quite landed on the sound they wanted him to have. He was trying all kinds of different voices and styles... but, in the end, song 1- Blue Suede Shoes is the style that worked. Great song, and a decent album. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Blue Suede Shoes

the best thing is 37 minutes

It's Elvis, it's alright.

nothing special nowadays

Not bad

It's fun how much early rock and roll was very country like. But I liked it more than I expected, as I'm usually not that much of a fan of 50s music!

I’ve always heard Elvis stole all his songs, but wow.

Disappointed

Pretty good. Never listened to a whole Elvis album before and I enjoyed it much more than I expected.

Enjoyed the rockabilly feel to these. 3/5

too many slow songs... where r the bangers elvis

Elvis's whole vibrato thing in his voice gets a little obnoxious, but this ain't bad. Hilarious how dated all of the lyrics are, and in general just his singing style is super rooted in that era, doesn't translate all that well to today IN MY OPINION. I think all the songs are just like classic 12 bar blues tunes that he decided to record.

Classic sound.

If you ignore the historical context the album is pretty average. Was it important at the time. Yes. Is it worth going back to. Probably not.

pretty standard elvis. undeniable that he has a great voice, but i do find the sound a little bit boring if im being honest. having said that, i really enjoyed “blue moon”, that one really resonated with me.

2/10 worst Elvis impersonator. it's like this guy has never even heard Elvis. --- it was at least kinda interesting to listen to an album recorded before he figured out what Elvis sounded like. And who can argue with 28 minutes?

This was certainly Elvis! I didn't remember his voice being so nasal on some of the songs, and I gotta be honest, I wasn't a huge fan. "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Money Honey" were great though.

cool of elvis to reference the clash like that

#346. I didn't hate this quite as much as I expected. I mean, I didn't really hate it at all, weirdly enough. Maybe just because I hate Elvis fans, I had assumed his music would be as cringe as they are, but it seems alright for the most part. And luckily, all the Elvis fans are dying off, so at least I have that going for me. 3/5: decent

Debut album of early rock n roll from The King is an automatic for the 1001 must hear list. Loved the contrast between rock songs like Blue Suede Shoes and typical 50s schmaltz I Love You Because. Never heard most of these songs before, some so early they don’t really sound like Elvis (2.8*s)

This is #day38 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... this is Elvis, an iconic album artwork, the music that's deemed pivotal, at least so they say. To me, it’s just another rockabilly/country/rock and roll stuff from the 50s (look up my review of Chirping Crickets by Buddy Holly & The Crickets for reasons). I belong to a camp of those questioning Elvis’s luck, status, and the "King of Rock and Roll" label. How about "King of Bleached Rock and Roll"? As of today, this music and his persona mean little to me, if anything. The sound, lyrics, and overall style feel dated and even laughable. Let it be a low 3 out of 5. I wonder what Monday brings, aka looking forward to #day39.

Surprisingly enjoyable, this is the first Elvis I’ve ever listened to

Eh, another important album but not entirely great listening experience

Jag gillade faktiskt den här, Elvis switch it up i många av låtarna

I like this well enough. I understand the importance, but I don't think it's aged well. Songs are fun but simplistic.

Profoundly mid. The name says it all. This is Elvis, alright.

Not my favorite kind of music but Elvis is a legend. First time listening thru this album

Irrépressiblement entraînant, absolument familier: je connais des versions de plusieurs chansons, que ce soit les siennes ou d'autres. On sent Elvis totalement engagé dans son interprétation, fougueuse mais nuancée

not my fave Elvis and mostly borrowed songs, but you can't deny what this did to the music industry

Classic Elvis, not my fav but fun.

Wow he stole a lot of music from Black people, huh? Mostly I prefer the originals.

The first album of the White Rock 'n' Roller.

28minutes. Each song is under 3minutes. That's the correct amount of time to enjoy Elvis. Any longer and it's too much.

I’m going to be honest. I’m not really into Elvis Presley. I like some of his songs (particularly Can’t Help Falling in Love With You), but I just can’t get into him. To be honest, I’m not a fan of 50’s rock n’ roll, despite rock being my favorite music genre. To be fair, this debut album has its place in history. Obviously, it put Elvis on the map and made him the proclaimed King of Rock n’ Roll. But it’s honestly just ok. My biggest problem is that his voice doesn’t sound like is hit his stride yet, so he sounds a little off in some of the songs. It’s a debut, though, as his voice did get better with age. But outside of Blue Suede Shoes and Blue Moon, the album was only decent. It almost feels like 2 stars to me, but I think 3 will do. It’s mostly is a 2.5 for me personally. Favorite track: Blue Suede Shoes Other hits: I’m Counting on You, Blue Moon, Money Honey

Started strong. Not sure if country copied Elvis or what but it sounded very country other than the first song.

It's not amazing, but it is good fun. I don't think I've ever sat down and deliberately listened to Elvis before but I liked this album more than I expected.   Unfortunately every time I hear Elvis sing "Tutti frutti, aw rooty" my brain reframes it as "Aw, Rudy" and calls to mind the miserable decline of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani. That scene in Borat... Aw, Rudy. This is a "me problem" and I haven't let it impact my rating.

Enjoyed this album

Some great songs, but all in all quite mediocre

Not my favourite Elvis album

It’s fine. It’s on the list for its place in history, which is fair, and it’s not bad at all but certainly not the best of its kind.

Clássico!

It was ok I liked: Blue suede shoes Just because Tutti frutti Trying to get to you

Listening notes: Well I guess we're listening to Elvis today! Blue Suede Shoes: Classic I'm Counting On You: This is Elvis singing?? I Got a Woman: Didn't realize he had a version of this. A couple years after Ray Charles wrote it. "She give me money!' Interesting how he sounds totally different, more high pitched on some of these tracks: I'm Counting on You, I Love you Because, I'll Never Let you Go. I'm confused about how "I love you because" has the highest play count on YTM on this album?? A tight 28 minute album here. Classic early Elvis. Some huge hits and several I haven't heard. Mostly, or maybe all covers as far as I can tell, including a fun Ray Charles "I got a woman" cover. Interesting how his voice sounds so different (e.g. higher pitched) on a lot of these tracks. A fun listen, would play again. 3.5/5

50's woman really came for this? Favourite Songs: Blue Suede Shoes, I'm Counting on You, Tryin' to Get to You. Least Favourite Songs: One Sided Love Affair, Just Because, Money Honey.

Album is fine- has some real hits but also some filler songs. There are even a few songs where I question if it's really elvis. You can definitely twll he had major "influence" from black artists at the time. That being said- the songs that hit sound good- they defined his sound and I can see how it was influential on popular rock and roll

Elvis is cool when he is rocking and rolling and singing that even macho men needs a hug. He loses me when he starts crooning out ballads - his version of ‘Blue Moon' is downright horrible.

Elvis is a heck of a performer on some tracks (Blue Suede Shoes) and a bumbling fool on others (I got a woman, tutti frutti). And some songs are not that good to begin with.

Seems old. Probably had to be there for this one. Good for the one listen, but too dated now. Will I listen to again: 5%

Not so bad

A bit dated, but still fun.

I'll say that this was a right-smack-in-the-middle 3. Meaning, it was fun! Elvis is all over the map with this record– I think his earliest? You can tell he's growing into his voice. Some tracks are so delicate as to be almost beautiful, others are hammy, unserious, the almost suffocating sound we all know. It's strange to hear him trying out so much, vocally, not really settling. I have a special place in my heart for "Blue Moon." I wrote a song sampling the last 30 seconds of that, and it's one of the most beautiful songs I've made. I had the radio on, and only got the last 30 seconds recorded, wondering, who is this?? Turns out– it was Elvis! A very early Elvis, at that. So a high 3/5

I feel like a lot of people feel like they have to like Elvis, just because he was so famous and influential, but to be honest I don't think that his legacy will be quite as well known in the coming decades as people seem to think. For what it's worth, I do think that this album has aged better than about 90% of music from the 50s, but that isn't saying a lot. It's a perfectly enjoyable album, but just doesn't feel that interesting or unique. I get that at the time, this was about as interesting and unique as music got, but compared the bands like The Beatles (different decade I know, but still a fair comparison in my opinion), this just doesn't hold up to today's standards nearly as well.

a few of these songs are nostalgic

Elvis is good

I'm separated from Elvis by much time and several generations. It's not my preference, but damn, I can't deny his impact. After listening to this debut album, I see Elvis's appeal is so much deeper than a physical attraction. I would argue he is the precursor to modern pop music, making music for mass appeal. His range in this album is remarkable.

Not a fan of the slow jams on here, but this fella's pretty good at the rock that he's known for. 3.4

Not a fan on first listen but with it being so short, managed to get through a few extra listens and found myself bobbing along to it at times. Can't say i'm fully sold on it, but has it's place in history.

I’ve never been a big Elvis listener. Certainly he was groundbreaking at the time in many ways. And as an historical musical persona, he’s a 5 star celebrity. But, overall, I’m just a luke warm on his whole sound.

This is certainly a lot more interesting and lively than the other Elvis album I've heard in this collection ("From Elvis in Memphis"), so that's a nice plus. I'm not an Elvis (Presley) fan, though, so it's still hard to get excited about this album. It *is* interesting, though, to hear the contrast between the leftover Sun songs and the RCA Victor-commissioned songs, making for quite a strange mix of country and rock-n-roll. I know it's not really fair to who Elvis was, or to any of the singers across the years who weren't also songwriters, but I wish we could hear at least one song written by him, even if it's atrocious. It's kind of a bummer to only hear him covering somebody's else material, and really, his versions of songs like "Tutti frutti", "Blue suede shoes", "Money honey" and "I got a woman" are all so pale compared to the originals (pun intended).

Rockabilly with some slower, ballad-ry songs

Elvis sure did have an amazing vocal range, and his songs, whether original or covers, are undeniably emblematic of the evolution of rock.

I am not an Elvis fan...so I went into this with an open mind. I felt like I know a lot of the songs, but necessarily by him, which lead me to find out he didn't actually write the majority of his songs, but redoing songs doesn't seem unusual back then. Now the voice...its unique, its expressive, but to me its over the top. I Love you Because just seemed gross and to me not great. The faster songs were better, but even then I didn't think his voice was terrific, just different. This is iconic and did make me want to dance, but overall for me it isn't amazing, just okay.

It's pretty good but does sound very dated

It’s an ok album in 2024 but would have been phenomenal in 1956!

Brought a whole new sound, would be developed massively from this though 3.5*

A mixed bag of high highs and low lows. Lots of bops throughout. "I Love You Because" is a skip. Can't make it through.

This was okay. I imagine that there is something about being around Elvis at the time he was breaking ground, but it didn't really resonate with me.

Classic Elvis

Growing up I was never the biggest Elvis fan as I thought he was overrated. These days I still think he was overrated but he was bloody good at what he did . Elvis is a fantastic cover artists who has the charisma to pull of everything from tutti frutti & blue suede shoes to blue moon. Just a good Rock N' Roll record

This album does not catch me until "Trying To Get To You". The last five tracks are worth a listen. "I'll Never Let You Go" and his version of "Blue Moon" sound wild. The production is so echoey, spare and almost experimental? "Money Honey" has the 1968 Special energy a decade+ early. I imagine it would have been a blast to have seen him and his band live back in the 50's.

Okay, I get why this album is on the list. Elvis Presley was proclaimed the "King of Rock and Roll", one of the first white males to achieve commercial success, ushering that genre to a white audience. Much's been said about race relations in popular music, which I encourage you to look into. Elvis's debut album accomplished what it set out to do - making covers of African-American tunes to present to the larger masses. It's certainly important for historical purposes, but as an album to listen to it leaves much to be desired. After all, this is a debut album consisting of mostly cover songs. There are some fun songs here like his cover of "Blue Suede Shoes" and the original song "One-Sided Love Affair". The rest either pale in comparison to the original such as with Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti", or don't bring a lot of energy like with Roy Hamilton's "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You)". Also, with the original songs from the respective artists being more available nowadays, Elvis's renditions are more reliant on how he was a performer. The album is not bad, and it makes sense why it's on the list. But there ain't much to revisit here.

sounds inoffensive, which isnt a bad thing. its also not a bad album to listen to since every songs are pretty short clocking at around 2-2:30 and totaling 28 minutes. probably groundbreaking at the time since elvis covered black artists in the 50s. most of the tracks are pretty fun and energetic, but not really my kind of thing. i favor side b over a though. 3 personal favs: trying to get to you, blue moon

Pretty good, but short. He's the king though, so he does what he wants. 3/5

Rockabilly is oddly charming. Totally get why this guy is famous!

It’s Elvis. Classic Elvis. I don’t love it but certainly appreciate his place in history. He was one of the pioneers in rock and roll. But I just don’t enjoy listening all that much

Was probably awesome when it came out, but just kind of boring to me today

Fundamental to modern music, not anything to listen to in a vacuum though

63/100

Who doesn't know Elvis? Watched a lot of Elvis movies during my youth years. This was mainly driven by my mother but it didn't took us long to start to enjoy his music and even his movies. Since this is a 1956 recording the sound quality isn't up there. But the songs make it right.

Personal feelings on the man aside (both on the personal level and on the historical in terms of musical appropriation), he's got some good tracks. Very easy to get down and boogie to a very 50's rock and roll/blues sound. His voice is stellar, the energy in the performances are there, and its a fun time.

My Dad loves Elvis - I've listened to about 3 of his records. Elvis as a cultural phenomenon seems amazing, as a musician that I enjoy a little less so. That said, this album isn't bad.

Not for children's eyes

I suppose I should give it 4 stars but I'm just not a big fan of his music. Great and amazing voice for sure.

Is it Elvis who simply because of his whiteness made the breakthrough he did or is it something more. I think a lot pales when you compare it to the originals.

Very poppy. Mostly pretty good, not a huge fan of the slow ballads.

not a big fan of elvis, but its not bad

I was totally going to give the king a 4, but Spotify auto played a Johnny Cash song when the album finished and I realized Elvis was good but there was clearly better.

This is my second Elvis Presley album to review, after Elvis is Back. Elvis is Back was fine, but it certainly didn't set my world on fire, and I expect more of the same from this album. I think I can safely say that this album pretty much nailed my expectations. I'm not a big Elvis fan, but this album was fine. I personally find it really tough to judge albums like this. Rock music has come so far since this album was released, so this album is naturally going to sound a little bare bones compared to most of the music that I listen to. I'm sure that it caused a hell of a stir back when it came out though. I did enjoy Elvis's singing on this album more than I did on Elvis is Back, but hearing cover a bunch of songs was a tad dull. However, I appreciate how he was able to create a unique sound at the crossroads of rhythm and blues and country music. Was that sound stolen and appropriated? Yep. Other than acknowledge it, I'm afraid there's not much we can do about it though. When it comes to impact and legacy however, this album simply can't be overlooked. This album was the tremor before the explosion, and basically set decades worth of pop culture in motion. This album isn't really my cup of tea, but I appreciate the gravity of it.

There is no denying this album's place in history. Potentially solidifying rock and roll as a musical genre and popularizing it to a level never seen before, this album essentially started it all (well... except that most of it was stolen from music that had already come before...). The hits are the hits and the other songs are slowly fading into history. I can tell. I'm not a huge Elvis fan. I know and like the hits. I ignore most of the ones that didn't make it. This kind of rock and roll is fading fast, but gave birth and evolved into what we have today so it must be recognized. Coincidentally on my Rolling Stones Rock Trivia daily calendar at work this Saturday/Sunday's question was who was the singer that Elvis disliked so much he shot his television (the answer is Robert Goulet...) and then the question for Monday was Elvis gave Richard Nixon what gift while he was president (the answer was a pistol). Elvis has a place in the history of music, but unfortunately I feel him fading quickly. Again, the hits are the hits, the rest kind of bores me at this point.

As a debut this is great stuff but there’s covers on here and I wouldn’t really call that genuine for a debut especially at 29 minutes. Of course we get blue suede shoes which is a classic but others like tutti-frutti I know have been done before.

Yeah man acouple of groovy numbers enjoyed thebrock n roll stuff. Rest was arse

There's no denying Elvis's cultural and musical impact... and there's no denying I was foot-tapping throughout this album, but that's mostly because the 12-bar blues osmosis. Taking this album on its own merits, it's good but not great.

A couple catchy hits but this was not a standout record.

I wasn't expecting to, but I really enjoyed this album!

It's Elvis! This was really fun and there was a lot I had never heard before. I especially enjoyed his extraordinary delivery of the line 'Fair exchange is no robbery' on 'One sided love affair'!

I found this a pleasant way to spend 30 minutes but if you scratch the surface it doesn't really hold up. He has a good voice and whoever pulled the strings picked some good songs. I have always felt Elvis the cultural icon was a bit ridiculous, but he undoubtedly is one. The issue is that these songs only became popular because it was a sexy white man singing black music. These songs were better as originals and in this day and age, we wouldn't need to whitewash them to make them acceptable to the ass market. Let's leave it as Elvis was decent for his time, but thank god society has moved on.

Yep that's Elvis.

I've got a soft spot for those early Elvis recordings and that whole Sun Records sound

Mid but I understand why boomers cream over him. Still mid

Everybody knows Elvis. Everybody know how much he influenced pop/rock music. And he was probably the first globally loved pop/rock musician. I guess for that he deserves 5 stars. But I guess we are all here not to rate by the value for history but value for us and for me this is "only" a 3 star album.

More classic Elvis than previously. Some good stuff on here, and although we don't quite have the Elvis bug, we can appreciate his historic significance

Another album full of covers that aren't as good as the originals. It did get my foot tapping though.

This music feels both very of its time but also timeless. Listening to this in 2024 means that there’s little surprises here, because pretty much every aspect of the music on Elvis Presley(1956) has been expanded on in some way in the 67 years since. Nevertheless, this is still a really fun listen, the version I listened to *sounded* really good, and with a runtime of 28 minutes it doesn’t overstay its welcome.

Not my cup of tea

3 for legacy

Excellent album, but quite intense for a Monday morning…

Always a good listen, obviously packs less of a punch today than it did when it came out. But Blue Suede Shoes will always be a banger, regardless of era.

This didn’t have a lot of the Elvis classics that I love. Although it did have “Blue Moon” which is great. Otherwise it’s fine. 3/5

Awesome listening to his first full album

I was expecting better, I realize this is the very early stuff, and was probably groundbreaking at the time, but it really underwhelmed.

Hmm obviously great artist but also not immensely catchy

The performance talent is undeniable; one of the many reasons his music and legacy is still around. Not something that I'd go out of my way to listen to, but it's a fun time when it comes on.

Classic Elvis. He was good wasn’t he. Although questionable morals.

You can tell he stole from black people but he jamming so let him cook

Not an Elvis fan, but I don’t hate him either. But with this as a debut album, it’s easy to see how he could become such a phenomenon. His swagger is evident in those rockabilly roots.

I've never listened to an Elvis album before. I don't really think much of him either way as a vocalist. If you told me the phrase 'pales in comparison' came about describing the role of Elvis in popular music, I'd believe you. Still, I'm a sucker for the kind of guitar Scotty Moore plays on this. My favourite George Harrison guitar parts are him copying this stuff. music: failed to hate. (⌐♚_♚)

Fun Little Rock and roll album. Never listened to straight Elvis before and it was alright!

first off - album artwork is just undeniably epic... dude is singing his heart out, artwork looks extraordinarily modern considering this thing is 68 years old, love the colorway ... I am pretty shocked to see that most of these songs clock in at 2mins & something as I see a frequent criticism of contemporary rap music and 'tik-tok era music' that the songs are too short! Meanwhile this guy singing standards is left unbothered with his 2min long songs... I am curious to know when we got it in our heads that a long song = a good one because clearly that is a post 60s idea, however I feel very comfortable blaming prog rock for this. I was trying to parse out why old people like Elvis so much, beside the fact that he reminds them of their youth... in my teens I was searching for the most abrasive and offensive music I could find, so far in my twenties I have been interested in coming back to earth through calming music, now that I near my thirties, I have been increasingly searching for the sublime, looking to classical music and opera to find the most beautiful music my ears can hear... while I find Elvis to be generally deplorable - there is moments of devastating feeling in this album, deep seeded emotion and undeniable beauty... it feels as if he's singing right to you and I found many of these songs to be deeply moving and heartbreaking. bad man, okay album but some really beautiful moments ...

Look, Elvis was obviously a huge thing, even if he did just repackage black music. But listening to this compared to black musicians from around the same time...this just sounds dated. Nothing against the King but probably just 3 stars from me.

Understand the importance but most renditions are just ok

12 songs in 28 minutes. I appreciate it. Liked it. Loved Blue Suede Shoes, Tutti Frutti.

I’m generally a fan of Elvis music but I’ve realized that he is not an album artist. He could crank out hits but, at least with this one, there’s one true hit and maybe one decent one then 20 minutes of boring crooning which only serves as background music for when two 50s high schoolers fuck in their car in lovers lane or whatever. If you’re going to steal black music you might as well make it interesting in some new way. This is literally the exact same sound even down to the vocals.

guys it's me jacob elordi stop fighting (nf)

This isn't as great as I expected it to be. It's the first from Elvis so that means something. Blue Suede Shoes is a fantastic cover and a great way to kick of the album. But it never reaches that height again in the next 25 minutes. Wonderfully produced and good order. There are just better Elvis albums out there

The album isn’t terrible. It’s just that I’ve heard this style of music done better.

Exactly what I’d expect an Elvis album to sound like. It was interesting to hear his version of I Got A Woman, it’s substandard compared to the Ray Charles original. A 50’s classic but very middle-of-the-road to my ears.

I listened to From Elvis in Memphis earlier this week and I was not impressed. I’m not a fan of later Elvis. This is the Elvis I like, he’s still hungry and trying to prove himself. Not every song is great but there’s good energy throughout. A solid debut album.

Quite nice.

Probably Elvis’s best album until his comeback era, it’s iconic and pretty much introduced the world to album rock and roll, But under a modern lens, it feels incredibly disjointed, as if every song were recorded at a different studio with different production styles. The album wasn’t the musical standard in 1956, so this can be mostly forgiven for really helping to promote the format as the norm. That said, while it’s a great collection of songs, it feels about as cohesive as a greatest hits album. And since Elvis has so many hits, a greatest hits album may be a better bet to listen to than his album debut. The compilations The Sun Sessions and Sunrise present his music that was recorded at Sun in Memphis, and in my opinion present a better, more cohesive time capsule of early Elvis.

Classic Elvis. What more can I say? You either like it or don't. I didn't mind most of these songs. There were some slow songs that were easily skippable though. It's crazy listening to these songs in a new light, hearing the influences... And understanding how much he ripped off African American singers. You can't NOT hear that in this record. Regardless, this record was pretty ok.

Did you ever hear of this guy? LOL! A lot of the major hit attributed to the King. "Blue Sued Shoes", "Tutti Frutti". The ones I enjoyed were the slower ballads (" I Love You Because") - old school country

It sounds like it’s been a one take singing in to a can quality. All songs are covers of popular songs, but Blue Suede Shoes definitely stands out. Blue Moon is interesting.

Pretty good, not Elvis' best work, still great for the time it was released in

Lots of classics

Not a fan of Elvis

Elvis Presley by Elvis Presley is exactly what it says on the tin... It's Elvis Presley. Of course I know who he is. Though I can't say I've ever listened to an album before. This seems to be divided into "songs you know" and "boring songs". I guess it's good because it's early stuff? But then "suspicious minds" from his Vegas years is great. I guess if I was interested in Elvis, I'd have to do a compilation of his best songs - or the ones I liked best. But otherwise it's just part of the background noise of culture. I sort of know about it but don't need to listen to it by choice. You just here Elvis songs around. I much prefer the Jimi Hendrix version of Blue Suede Shoes. Is "Tutti Frutti" an Elvis original? I thought it was Little Richard or someone like that? ...Yeah if you search for it, it's the Little Richard version that comes up. I like that all the songs are short. They don't hang around. Isn't Blue Moon more famously done by someone else? I'm going to give this a three as "average" but it's probably more like 2 and a half. I don't hate it. It's not unpleasant to listen to. But I will probably never choose to listen to it again! I liked "Blue Suede Shoes" "I Got a Woman" and "Money Honey". I also liked "Tutti Frutti" and "Blue Moon" but I don't think they are the definitive versions and are done better by someone else.

As distinct as a ginger

I always forget how short Elvis's songs are, 12 songs in 28 minutes... I appreciate this for what is it. I like a few of the songs, but not enough to come back to this album. I do not, and never have understood what all the fuss was about in the 50's.

What strikes me the most is that most of the better tunes on this record are all covers. Elvis was a phenomenon, one of the first true cultural icons of rock and roll, but that doesn't mean that his records are high art, or even required listening. This collection isn't bad, but everything that is good on it was done better by someone else... Blue Suede Shoes, Tutti Frutti and on the extended version Lawdy, Miss Clawdy and Shake, Rattle and Roll.

Early Elvis that was a bit before my time but was well loved by lots of the parents in my life. Just not mine. :D

I prefer his slower songs, but there are a bunch of hits here

He's the king for a reason, and his influence is obviously felt throughout the whole history of rock music. But when it comes to this album, outside a couple tracks there's nothing here that really makes it a stand out.

Hurts my heart, but I'm going to give Elvis three stars. The rockabilly is solid, but I think the songs that have been done better by black artists make these versions sound bland by comparison (I've Got a Woman, Tutti Fuitti). He just isn't the King here.

Great debut from the King

I can see the appeal of the more energetic Presley songs, Blue suede shoes in particular

It's Elvis. Whatever.

Classic album, But not that great..!

Some pretty average Elvis. But I’ve got to say, it put me in a great mood. 7.5/10 Top 3: 1. Blue Suede Shoes 2. Tutti Frutti 3. I’ll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin’)

Definitely dated but also definitely still good. Low 3.

Elvis was such a blatant thief. Most of these songs are cheap imitations of better songs. Enjoyed it okay.

It’s an important album, but I know understand every claim of appropriation

Historically interesting but rather a hodgepodge as an album.

Elvis is nostalgia for me; having been something my parents introduced me to. Despite this, and my love for this era of rock n roll, he is NOT my favorite. His debut LP showcases his voice quite well, and the cover image alone probably helped draw countless young people to this new form of music, whose roots were firmly in the taboo. And that's about where it ends. Elvis only plays guitar on a couple of tracks here, and piano on only one. Not a single song is written by him. This is the beginning of a 70+ year long music industry practice of taking a pretty face, and selling pop records with it. The music here is well played (great session players on here) but it lacks the raw power, energy, and innovation of artists like Chuck Berry or Little Richard. It's a fun listen and a historic artifact, but it's hard for me to not contextualize it as the colonization of rock n roll

- A more "old-fashioned" album, in the sense that the tracks are all fine but not connected together outside of the fact that Elvis is performing them. - The real bangers are all the ones you know, "Blue Suede Shoes," "Tutti Frutti," and "Blue Moon." None of the rest are disappointing, but they are just not particularly memorable.

Fun but I didn't love it. Any time I recognized a song, I liked the other artist's version more and I wished I was listening to that instead. I like Elvis's goofiness and energy, and Scotty Moore's guitar especially. I enjoyed having it on, but probably won't be going back any time soon. A+ for album cover. 6/10

Eh, IDK

I didn't like it as much as I thought I would like it. It had a few super famous songs on it, but the other ones didn't do a ton for me. All around I still enjoyed it and wouldn't complain if someone else put it on. My favorite songs were 'One-Sided Love Affair', 'Tutti Frutti' and 'Blue Suede Shoes'. 6/10

I had no idea London Calling modeled the album cover off of this. It's almost a bit of a boring album nowadays but for the time it was setting trends and needs to be looked at through that lens. Elvis himself almost seems to play a smaller part on this album vs his later works. Not surprising but interesting to hear where he was at from the start.

Pretty good album art. He has an interesting voice and makes interesting vocal choices to catch your attention. Great pop song track lengths. Tryn' to Get to You is a new stand out for me. At the end of the day this is not a great album, it's a collection of songs and it made an impact. 3.5 rounded down.

Solid album. Some songs had more of a country feel than I was expecting. More like a 3.9 but not a 4

It’s okay but nothing that gets me excited.

I surprisingly didn’t mind this album

Since Elvis is so ridiculously well known, it almost felt comedic to listen to this and try to separate it from his legacy. Not that you have to do that in order to fully appreciate the work but still. It's funny. But separate from that - as a dancer, I felt immediately that a good chunk of his music is so intimately tied with dance and the dance culture of the 50's. There were times that I couldn't help but tap my foot or shimmy a little. In the same vein with how people make fun of country music's lyricism for being "truck, beer, dirt road, hard work"-core, I could see the influences of what was popular topic-wise in the 50s as the majority of the album's tracklist were either these sweet, nearly hawaiian style love songs or sock-hop, spin your lover girl in a circle kinds of jams. Long story short, I enjoyed it at a base level solely for its historical value and danceability lol

Blue suede shoes!

Not my kind of music. The two well known songs are okay for me but the rest ist too slowly.

I mean, I would also get catty if my ex-husband was serenading his wife on stage at the PTO fundraiser (and sang better than my current one). Uh oh!

B- Blue Suede Shoes 3 I'm Counting On You 3 I Got A Woman 3 One-Sided Love Affair 3 I Love You Because 3 Just Because 3 Tutti Frutti 3 Tryin' To Get To You 3 I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry (Over You) 3 I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin') 3 Blue Moon 3 Money Honey 3 Elvis doesn't go lower than 3.

I know, I know, it's Elvis. But for a guy who only sings other peoples' songs, he doesn't perform them any better than other artists. Blue Suede Shoes is really the only worthwhile track here.

Pretty ok album. I suspect you had to be there when this came out to really appreciate it. Now that you've heard Presley dozen of times the initial shock reaction is not very strong. Regardless, 'Blue Suede Shoes' stands out as the best song, but otherwise it was pretty bland.

Dal Libro della Genesi: "in principio Elvis creò il r'n'r..."

It was alright, just not my taste truthfully.

I mean it's Elvis, I like his voice and "Blue Suede Shoes" is a great song but honestly other than that I feel like his songwriting was pretty mid. The album seriously slowed down after the first couple tracks and his guitar playing was also not great. Maybe that had something to do with the recording equipment that was available at the time, but I didn't think his guitar skills were very good. Overall just kinda meh.

never listened to an Elvis album before. enjoyed the variety of musical styles-pretty wide range. liked his original tracks more than his covers.

This record was likely massive for popular music in the 1950s, but it hasn't aged well due to some controversy. It does feel like Elvis was stealing what black artists had already done. There are some discussions of whether Elvis was recording these songs in order to bring attention to black artists at the time, but I'm not sure there's much evidence of that. All the being said, Elvis's voice alone is iconic. Few things scratch a nostalgic itch like hearing "Blue Suede Shoes".

Classic album, not a personal fave

Elvis had a very iconic timbre of voice, but he just wasn't as fun as Little Richard

I liked two songs from this (I'll Never Let You Go and Blue Moon) but not really my kind of thing

The last ten years or so have not been kind to Elvis’ legacy. He’s been widely considered by younger audiences as a “racist”, “thief”, etc. and while I strongly disagree with most of these harsh criticisms, there is some truth in that the man did not write his own songs. And whether it was his intent or not to take credit for them is irrelevant. And I would label any one of the artists he covers on this album as the Real Kings of Rock n Roll. But I’m not gonna sit here and deny that the man was a once in a lifetime vocal talent and showman, the likes of which we’ll never see again. He single-handedly shifted pop culture. And his death was a tragedy that summed up a life of struggle and addiction due to the massive fame that came with his talent. But how’s this record? It’s…good. Elvis sings the hell out of every track, even if they don’t necessarily hold a candle to the original artists who sang them. You can hear him playing around with different styles and finding what would be his distinct sound in his later career. It’s fascinating, if kind of plain.

Whether you consider Elvis the “King” of Rock and Roll or of Musical Appropriation, there’s really no denying his singular ability to meld influences into a style and presence all his own.

solid record. Elvis did his thing from the beginning. even tho his career is based off uncredited black music he was still a good artist i guess. Elvis Tutti frutti through me off for a bit... i mean if you hear little richards version than you see tha elvis version is the crying baby against little richards hydrogen bomb

Yeah that's Elvis after all.

Besides the album opener "blue suede shoes" i wasnt familiar with any of these songs. The band is super tight and the production is sparse, which is cool in that old school rockabilly way. Elvis does some funny stuff with his voice on "one sided love affair" and "just because". Not sure if its meant to be comical but i laughed. In fact, much of this album came off as a little silly. I can appreciate the importance of this album and it's impact on popular music but the songs sound a little unserious and superficial. It doesnt have the emotional depth of later Elvis which I much prefer. That being said, i still liked it, but in a more acedemic, historical artifact kind of way, rather than a visceral and emotional kind of way.

What came first, the Clash or Elvis. Some iconic songs on this one, including some covers he made his own. It's not something I would typically go out of my way to listen to, but I enjoyed the carefree feel of the era.

Classic Elvis. Never loved him but appreciate the musicianship

Elvis is alright

this album feels more like crooner Elvis than rock Elvis, great voice as always but so much of it blends together. While listening to this album I missed more than one track change due to similarities. Its alright, the best had yet to come.

- Stone cold classic - Not his best though

Elvis is a bit dated and kitschy in 2024, but nonetheless still obviously important to the history of rock and roll. I can appreciate Elvis for what it is - a ground breaking album for its time.

Never a big Elvis fan. I do like a few songs and do think he has a good voice.

Undoubtedly Elvis was a notable natural singer, and his impact on the music scene, through this first album, started a revolution in the music sound of the 50s and on. That said, although there are a few versions of tracks on this album that became his trademark sound... the album is still mostly Country tracks which were given the Rockabilly twist. But it was of an era. I do get why Elvis influenced the music world, and growing up in the 80s I heard him played a lot by my aunt and uncle, but he's still not my thing.

It was Ok

Average collection of songs overall. A couple of great tracks but not enough to push it past 3 stars.

I understand this was a hugely important album in modern music and had vast cultural significance, so I'm not going to be too harsh. Overall, there's a few catchy songs and a bunch of forgettable tracks. The biggest reason I can't score this higher is that Elvis didn't write a single song on this album. To me, Elvis is more of a performer, not an artist.

I really enjoy rock and roll and I appreciate the impact this record had on rock and roll but it is hard to fully appreciate it when it's almost fully covers of black artists. I know there is debate on Elvis and how much of a culture vulture he was but B.B. King claims that he was alright. The songs are great and Elvis does a great job covering them but it's just too bad the black artists that wrote the songs didn't get as much credit as they deserved.

Complicated rating, because he basically whitewashed Black music. Also, Elvis cannot sing in a higher register. But it’s still a very nostalgic album for me.

Not bad, but Elvis is extremely overrated. Originals are better than his covers.

Classic

I don’t feel like many people would want to listen to this just because, but the influence is important. Elvis is a good singer, but I can’t like his music as much, since it doesn’t feel as genuine. Tutti Frutti is cool, but Little Richard does it better.

not my vibe

It’s good and it’s interesting and for white people (and the music industry) it sure was different and ground breaking. Knowing the history behind it sure adds to the mystique of Elvis and his rise to fame. That being said, I always thought Elvis’ best creative years are his later ones.

A young unspoiled Elvis. Surely a revolution at that time, but now easy listening.

Love me some Elvis, and the album cover is great, but let's face it, not every one of these songs is amazing. Blue Suede Shoes is. Tutti Frutti is, but not as good as Little Richard's version. Still, pretty good.

Apparently I only knew Elvis’ voice via his older & also more deep voice things. It sounded different to me on a lot of these tracks which was fascinating.

I think I was an Elvis movie fan, not a music fan...

3 de 5

I can see why boomers went crazy over this, if this was sent back in time we’d have a “giving a baja blast to peasants” scenario. Bringing it forward in time it just sounds like quaint, I guess?

It’s Elvis. And it’s ok.

Elvis fans shall not be disappointed

Definitely get the vibes of - I can see this going IN live. Elvis has always been interesting to me in a cultural standpoint as well. I could write a whole ethnomusicological essay on Elvis and the history of rock, but I'll spare everyone. :) I'm sure my mom is making her morning coffee right now sensing a happiness and not knowing that it's because her daughter is listening to Elvis (she's an Elvis FANATIC). Which then makes me wanna tell this only slightly related story: My mom is number 8 of 11 children, and grew up dirt poor. She shared an attic with all her 6 sisters (the boys all shared another room), everything was communal, she didn't have anything to herself, etc. Anyway, on her 16th birthday, she came down the stairs KNOWING she was hot stuff and no one was gonna take that away from her. Well, she came down the stairs and heard on the radio that Elvis had died. Her favorite. On her 16th birthday. She laughs telling the story to this day, saying she really couldn't have ANYTHING.

Gefällt mir.

6.5/10

Elvis Presley

I'm counting on you Money Honey

this was pleasant and a fine listen. i was most excited to see the cover that London Calling was inspired by, as there's not a lot else to be inspired by here. a now-infamous white guy doing covers of black musicians' songs? how droll. favorites: the ones i knew already: blue suede shoes, tutti frutti, blue moon

Cool psychedelic album with amazing guitar work and strong messages.

This album is the love child of country western and delta blues and rightfully shows off Elvis's range for both.

Demasiado escuchado ya

It's okay. Not my favorite.

It was ok, not really my thing

Not bad but these are songs that are so prevalent in pop culture that I have heard them a lot of times just in day to day life. It's good but not something I would ever put on to listen to.

I know I have the benefit of hindsight here, but it's wild to me that this album is the one that ushered in rock and roll across the American mainstream. Well, we all know why that's the case, but it's really crazy to listen to this with the context of knowing that so many artists did this style of music so much better and more interesting than what's put out here. Still, the importance of this album to my favorite music to listen to cannot be discounted or disrespected. Favorite track: I Got a Woman

I didn't really care for this too much. I don't think it's bad. Just not for me.

Not bad at all! Really didn’t expect to enjoy, because I’ve never been an Elvis fan. But it was more versatile than I assumed, and the quality is pretty good for being nearly 70 years old.

I never want to hear tutti frutti again in my life.

Blue Suede Shoes is good, but the rest of the album dragged, which is impressive for a 28 minute album

Slightly anemic when compared to the original (black) artists. He’s obviously talented, but effortlessly so.

This record must have been quite something when it was new. It's not as samey as most of his contemporaries. Not all the songs are the same tempo, more dynamic singing. But music has evolved a lot since then, almost beyond recognition. This record is not relevant for anything that is fresh and new today. Favorite song: Money Honey

groovy, too lovey dovey

Elvis is hot and I don't care who knows it!!

He's the king, baby. Enjoyable, not unpleasant. White people's versions of Little Richard songs always seem so goofy and soulless, lol.

3.5 blue suede shoes is banger

interesting album, but not completely my jam and at times it felt repetitive, but that might just be me. It's on the edge of 4 stars though

He’s obviously iconic, but not he’s my cup of tea. A few bangers

The album starts off with an absolute banger. The middle is adequate, but nothing too exciting. I know elvis has better songs in the catalog, so was a little disappointed

I obviously didn't hate it! I just don't really love Elvis... I'd be interested to hear his contemporaries - I know he was basically the vehicle through which white people accepted Rock and Roll so I'd like to hear what his black contemporaries were doing that was less watered down I imagine.

Kann man anhören

Damit fing es an.

Not my music style unfortunately

When Blue Suede Shoes came on I got excited, just to be quickly disappointed by the rest of the album. Blue Moon was another song I didn't mind but overall it all just fell flat to me. That being said when you keep in mind how damn young Elvis was when he recorded this and how polished he sounds you can't hate the album. Plus, we all start somewhere. You can see why he became so popular with that unique voice of his.

I like Elvis. The album is good. I don’t like the ballads as much.

Da e jo legendarisk

Better than I expected

I get why it's on the list, but it's just not special in 2023

Sure, it was a fun listen, but I’m not sure why an album of covers is on this list. Energy was great, but the lyrics seemed formulaic and surface level.
