Reviews (page 8 of 11)

Did not age well at all. My name is, guilty conscience and role model are fire. The rest are either just alright (97 bonnie & clyde) or embarrassingly bad (my fault).

Big fan of Eminem, so I'm sorry to give this a 3🌟 ,but this album just ain't really it. It aged very badly, although it helps if you can somehow listen to it with a different mood treating it like it's a cartoon or something. The rhymes and the mind-blowing lyrics are there as always, but the songs are just not that great yet with the exception of a few.

This album is an exercise in being provocative and offensive, just for the sake of doing it. I would like to think that Eminem's talent and this album became huge despite his dark sense of humor, instead of because of it. This album sounds like nothing else that came before it. The tone, the cadence, the flow, the rhymes are original and genius. Just wrapped in a sharp, crass package.

Like with most rap albums, it’s really only a matter if whether I like the songs (or just a song) or not. I like “My Name Is”, but not a lot, so it’s a 3. I can appreciate the production and rapping skill but none of it really appeals to me. I could say similar things about most albums on this list, though.

Not a hip hop fan, but surprisingly I didn't mind this too much. Maybe it's because Eminem is a fellow Detroiter, but this was alright. That '97 Bonnie & Clyde song though, WTF? 3 stars.

Slim Shady knows

Very different from the other Eminem songs I had heard previously. Full of dramatic stories of violence and attitude

I appreciate how different this album was from pretty much every previous rap album. I like the dark humor, too, but the vulgarity gets to be a bit much. For me, about halfway through I found myself getting tired of the incessant swearing (not that I normally consider myself prudish, but still). It's a very good album, though, and certainly worth at least one listen.

I respect the lyrical talent, Eminem has never been short in that area. Horrorcore just isn't my cup of tea. It's like an exaggerated journal of someone with lots of issues. This could apply to most people, but this is a specific type and caricature. The beats are average to above average, and the songs have a good flow. But the lyrics leave more to be desired personally, and maybe this is just the album showing its age. 3/5

When I was a kid I printed out the lyrics to 'Guilty Conscience' and learnt it with a mate of mine, taking a part each. My parents found the lyric sheet and freaked out, which I thought was a bit over the top, but looking back now I'm not fucking surprised! I think the main thing I find re-visiting this album now as an adult is just how immature the whole thing is. And needlessly 'edgy'. That said there are some good tunes in here. The production is really good, and all the samples and sound effects work well. And yes, I did rap along to Guilty Conscience with full gusto when it came on, regardless.

Hilarious, irreverent and uncomfortable

Interesting introduction to Eminem. I had not bothered to listen before but as I bought into the concept of trying music I may not like, I was ok with it. Not my thing but the presentation was good and the story was good

Loved this album growing up. Lyrics in the genre have improved over 20 years, but it's without a doubt that Eminem has strongly influenced the genre. I'm still partial rather to the Marshall Mathers LP.

Eminem is an accomplished artist, and storyteller, and his talent really shows on this album. Too bad his stories are all really messed up.

This went crazy when I was 12. As an adult, Em’s early shock and awe horror style just doesn’t hit the same way as it did in the early 2000s. It’s not shocking and it’s not interesting, it’s just kinda weird. Rhymes filled with murder and sexual assault, farts and piss. Some greats songs and rhymes are held back by how awful the subject matter is. Feels like it’s specifically aimed at 12 year old boys. Only so many times I can hear someone say they’re gonna sleep with a teenager and kill their wife

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: I can’t deny this is good, very solid and consistent flows and undeniably good wordplay and songwriting but not my cup of tea personally to say I enjoy this and would listen on my own accord Favourite song: Track 2 - My Name Is

Dada-esk in it's stream of conscious surrealist rap, a teething ring for millennials to be desensitised to the world , good thing too as the years since then the world has seen some shit and no way we could raw dog life like that without some sort of mind deadening. Liked but would have to be a while before I would listen to again. Favourite track - If I had

Appreciate, probably won't listen again. Followed along with lyrics for the full album. Effective presentation of pain and anger.

This one defies a satisfactory global rating for me. This album deserves to be on this list. It sounds incredible. Eminem uses his voice to create a different sound and mood in each song, which, to me, sets him apart from other rap artists. I appreciate much of the raw emotion that came from a not very distant life of hardship. He is creative and skilled. That said, the constant violence feels poisonous to me. I realize that much of it is fantasy, and it's explained that this is meant to shock and provoke as though it were a horror movie rather than reality. I just don't like violent horror movies myself, and that's the same feeling I get when I see one. I also realize that my repulsed reaction (and those of my ilk) is exactly what he was going for. I would say Eminem achieved the goal he set in creating this album, but it just wasn't created for me.

Daarom toch 3 sterren.

3 Growing up this has never been my favorite Eminem album but as I’ve aged I’ve come to appreciate a few more tracks on this one. It’s one of those “why don’t I listen to this more?” kind of album for me. “My Name Is” and “Guilty Conscience” are all time Shady classics but there are also songs like “As The World Turns” and “Bad Meets Evil” which are very nostalgic for me. I think this is the first Eminem album with Dr. Dre producing and you can feel his style all over the place here. Classic and aggressive, this is really only a taste of what’s to cum (get it? It’s on theme.)

3.5 I’ve never actually listened to this one, but I was pretty interested to check it out for contextual purposes at the very least after listening to The Marshall Mathers LP. In some ways, it’s a contrast to the follow-up - whereas MMLP feels like a reactionary response to sudden fame and the criticism that comes alongside it, SSLP feels more like a reflection of living in poverty and culture surrounding it. In other ways, it’s a lot of the same - violent, misogynist, and shocking… but hey, he did give us a warning. That being said, I’m able to acknowledge Em is playing a character here. That’s not to say that he’s any kind of moral inspiration outside of the studio, but the album is clearly trying to be provocative to get a reaction out of people… and it succeeded. Anyway, musically, the album is pretty solid. I was surprised by how much I hadn’t heard before (the only song I recognized was My Name Is), but Dre’s production is great on every track - as it always is. Not as many standouts on this one for me as MMLP, but as a whole it’s a clear sign of what was ahead. I’ll end with this Wikipedia quotation: “‘97 Bonnie & Clyde’, which was formerly featured on the Slim Shady EP as ‘Just the Two of Us’, was re-recorded for The Slim Shady LP to feature his daughter Hailie's vocals. Because the song focuses on disposing of his girlfriend's corpse, Eminem was not comfortable with explaining the situation to Kim, and instead told her that he would be taking Hailie to Chuck E. Cheese's.” Favorite songs: My Name Is, Role Model, My Fault

not his best

Lyrics aged like milk

Well it doesn't really work for a 50 year old - but there are some clever rhymes there

The voices in My Name Is are annoying

Hyvä debyytti, jota joskus tuli luukuteltua enemmänkin, mut ei ehkä oo aikaa kestäny, niinku siitä seuraavat klassikot

The thing I was most surprised about here was the humour. Right from the directive “Don’t do drugs”in the opening Public Service Announcement, there’s some funny stuff here. My favourites : “This is Paul Rosenberg, your faithful attorney at law Listen, I listened to the rough copy of your album And uh... you know I've just got to be honest with you Can you tone it down a little bit?”( Paul-Skit); “Look at the store clerk, she’s older than George Burns” (Guilty Conscience). Unfortunately there’s also a lot of misogyny (My Name Is ; 97 Bonnie & Clyde; As The World Turns)and a lot of violence (Role Model ; & particularly 97 Bonnie & Clyde). Musically I find it a bit repetitive. I liked the 3 tracks produced by Dre, especially Role Model. And I loved the sampling of Big Brother & the Holding Company’s version of Summertime at the beginning of Rock Bottom. I guess he had a hard life. I guess it paid off for him later on.

I find there’s something charming about Eminem’s edginess on this album. Other than that it’s, ironcally, mostly inoffensive

Oh Eminem. When “The Marshall Matters LP” came out I was 14 and it blew me away; I spoke very little English at the time but knew enough to be both scandalized and fascinated by this skinny dude rapping about not being like everyone else and killing his wife 😬. I loved the album but didn’t go looking for his previous work, so I’m coming to this only knowing “My Name Is”, which still makes me laugh. This album is so… over the top, so committed to be both funny and horrific, that is impossible for me to take offense at the worst parts (it feels like listening to the music version of Scream, or Rob Zombie’s horror movies). But there is real anger underneath, a very real sense of desperation and a weird vulnerability, and that I think sets it apart from other stuff of the late 90’s. Eminem doesn’t brag about being handsome or rich or a badass, instead he raps about how pathetic his life is, how he was bullied into an almost coma, how much working a low-wage job sucks and how much this is pretty much is only chance at making it. The urgency is compelling, present everywhere but specially in tracks like “Rock Bottom”; it really reminds me of why growing up Eminem felt so relatable despite the. misogyny. This was truly an end-of-century anthem.

I understand this was a big deal at the time, but the way his music has evolved over the past 20+ years, this early work just comes off as fairly juvenile. Guilty Conscience is still pretty great though.

I enjoy Eminem's music but this is definitely not my favorite. Still a pretty ok album but prefer some of his later Work

The genius shines through, absolutely; his facility with words and language and imagery is stunning, enhanced by crisp clear enunciation. The beats and music and backing vocals are interesting and the production couldn't be more solid. But wow. Clever but so so dark. Reminds me of the TV show The Boys. I mean, I get it, but there is such a thing as too much.

Tough one to rate because it was a tough one to listen to. This didn't age well. His lyrical genius is on display, and all his creativity, and unique approach, and the production was great. But the content which seemed jokey and fictitious 20 years ago was really hard to get through.

Early Eminem is a bit much

classic slim

I never really got the M&M thing

Oh so puerile and misanthropic and crude and silly, but it also seems so innocent now. I am partial to Eminem and without the homophobia and misogyny this would be a 4.

Violent and clever

I understand that it was a break out album, but Jesus Christ, it's so misogynistic that it's hard to listen to.

I don't think I had listened to the whole album before. There were catchy lyrics but also OTT horrorcore

Same reaction as the previous Eminem album - dude's got just ridiculous raw talent, and could use that to portray himself as any kind of character he wants, and chooses to be a weapons-grade plum. 🙄 Fave track - "My Name Is", I guess. That was damn near inescapable for a while so kinda became era defining....

Adored this album as a kid but hasn't dated well. Still good but not the masterpiece I remember it as.

A classic and so crude

Guay. Ritmillo con enfado.

A shot across the bow of hip hop, maybe the last truly transgressive mainstream pop act. Unfortunately I find him so annoying and tuneless even despite his obvious talent

Listening to a whole album of death, drugs, hatred and resentment can be exhausting. Some funny lyrics tho 'can't rap anymore, I just murdered the alphabet.

Pretty good album for his first real album

Badly dated humour detracts from solid rapping and production

I don’t like hip hop. The only reason I’m giving a 3 is because some of the lyrics were pretty hilarious.

I like parts of this album, but too much of it is really hard to listen to (then and now).

Not as appealing as his Jerry Mathers album. This has too much of a Kid Rock feel to it.

Familiar, a bit dated.

Lot of repetitive rhymes tbh and poorly aged jokes. Pretty fun time capsule tho and some good songs

starts very strong but gets weak quick 3.5

I bet this has aged terribly.

I guess it’s a little bit better than I expected but still pretty shit fuck Eminem, edgy cunt 5/10 the album starts saying not to try any of the shit he says, then halfway through the album he’s all talking about how you can drown yourself at home, he’s just an asshole who talks about how hard his life is with made up problems

So, all things considered. It helped that Eminem actually can spit lyrics. And that he kept his nasal whine. And that Dre saw beyond the physicalities and focused on the potential. And that 1999 was not 2019, and we had a more nuanced understanding of 'cultural appropriation'. (Don't get me wrong, there was hot shit on stilts then too. And far fewer people were paying attention to the egregrity of this behaviour. Nevertheless...)

I dare you to suggest to Eminem- or more appropriately his evil alter ego, Slim Shady- to start practicing an attitude of gratitude each morning upon rising. You will no doubt end up in the trunk of his car coupled with his dead wife on the way to your final resting place at the bottom of the lake on the outskirts of town (as represented visually on the cover art.) Randomly, - The intermittent ‘skits’ are offensive, seemingly for offensiveness’ sake. It’s the catfish of humor, bottom feeding. - Most of the rest of the material seems to aim the offense at particular persons or events from Eminem’s past, including himself. In truth, this is the most self-loathing I’ve heard in a good long while, and is not inconsistent with many folks who suffer from childhood trauma, as many of his ‘songs’ recount. He was 26 years old when he recorded it. No one at 26 should be hating themselves this much. - However, whatever Eminem is (and is not) doing in these ‘songs’ he’s definitely not glorifying a life gone wrong/bad. His choice of the ‘devil’ character to producer Dr. Dre’s ‘angel’ on ‘Guilty Conscience’ is interesting to ponder in light of his apparent self-hatred. ‘My Name Is’ and ‘Role Model’ also speak to this. And ‘’97 Bonnie & Clyde’ (cover art) is just a truly horrifying tale, hair standing up on the back of your neck stuff. - I was trying to think of the best description of these ‘songs’ and the word that kept popping in my head was ‘sarcasm.’ But sarcasm is the use of irony to mock or convey contempt. Eminem/Slim Shady disregards irony altogether to instead, just matter of fact-ly mock and convey contempt. I’m not sure what literary label should be given to ‘Cum On Everybody’ but sarcasm it ain’t. - I couldn’t help but question throughout 'The Slim Shady LP,' what’s the purpose? Eminem claims that its just horror for entertainment, much like the horror genre in cinema. But classic horror movies are almost always speaking to much larger cultural issues underneath the surface plot, so It’s hard not to imagine that 'The Slim Shady LP' might also be serving in this way. Maybe simply catharsis on a more personal level? One of the many things that helps lift an LP above the average are the emotions it elicits among its listeners. Say what you want about Eminem, but persons sure do react to his work, and not all negatively. And they’re not all disturbed and dangerous. Agreed, 'The Slim Shady LP' is not for everyone, and its not for me. (While I’m a fan, this is still early in his career and is not his best work by a long shot.) Still, though, it is art. And Eminem is a very good artist. Provocative, absolutely. Evocative? Perhaps to some. There is more than enough hatred for everyone here. And I’m willing to bet good money that you will hear something along the way that will finally get to you. In fact, that would make for a great discussion question among reviewers: what lyric on 'The Slim Shady LP' was the one that finally made you wince? Bring a sweater to this listen. Shade will fall.

I really thought I'd enjoy this more than I did, I like a lot of Eminem but this just wasn't doing it. His flow and lyrics are strong, but it was too juvenile for me.

Man, I struggle with this album. On the one hand, Eminem creates imagery with his words that is unreal, you can feel his anger and hatred through his raps, and his beats are solid. On the other hand some of these lyrics are disgusting (don’t get me started on Guilty Conscience). I could see it being a 5 for genius or a 1 for not aging well at all, so I’m in the middle.

A couple of good ones. I prefer his more polished albums that calm down a bit. Most of these lyrics didn't age well.

Ahh, the fine line between fantasy and misogyny... I have to say, though, that I do like this kind of storytelling hip-hop and the songs have a certain way of pulling you in immediately that I often struggle with when listening to others in the genre. Still, the subject matter doesn't hold up very well at all, regardless of which "character" he's supposed to be rapping from the POV of. Too bad. Also, full disclosure: I "wrote" a Super Bowl commercial for Eminem and Brisk Iced Tea. You can find it on YouTube. They scrapped most of the script, but I didn't care. I got to talk to Eminem on the phone the day after I had my wisdom teeth pulled and all he really wanted to know is if we could see his "puppet take a shit?" It was claymation animation. No puppets. And it was one of the best phone calls of my life.

Not a rap guy and while I get Eminem is playing a character, I just can't stand the lyrics. It just hasn't aged very well in my view. 2.5/5

Hard to believe that this was his first big album. He had already developed storylines and personas that appeared in later albums. Not a huge Eminem fan, but solid album.

Well - it’s not as good as the album that followed it - it’s we crafted and clever but also a bit too nauseatingly misogynistic - the concept of even talking this way about violence against women - even with the intention of furthering some other point - shouldn’t even be a thing in 2022. Judging with that lens this album isn’t as strong to make up for the passage of time and more acceptable language of the past. That said some classic tracks and even through the violence and irreverence - Eminem is a master of words and rhyme - and the production is wow - perfect beats, just enough comedy and Easter eggs in the mix. We’re it not for the nails on scratch board depiction of hatred against women - this would have been a comfortable great album.

nah, 3/5 at most, maybe 2.5

This simply didn't age well. Still some sick rhymes, though. Best track: Brain Damage

Some clever lyrics and excellent beats. My Name Is, is still a killer after 23 years. The rest of the tracks are juvenile, sexist, borderline racist and in places just dumb. The parts I enjoyed I really enjoyed but for the most part the album was a struggle. I've kept it as 3 stars as it is landmark album even though it is very dated

Did want to like it but realistically it's just not my cup of tee. The beats are funky and minimalistic, the rapping is, while lyrically on a unique level, often interrupted and lacking flow. Personally I didn't enjoy this as much as I hoped i would

listened to again still brash, still unapologetic

I remember this seemed a bit edgy and funny at the time but now I'm a bit older, the constant graphic descriptions of violence towards women seems A Bit Much. But I guess that’s the point. Great songwriting skill but it does become a bit of a grind by the end. Definitely preferred Marshall Mathers LP.

Liked this at the time and brought back a lot of memories but the beats are actually fairly weak in a lot of places. I think the 2nd album was a big improvement from memory.

Hi-'97 Bonnie & Clyde, Rap's original edgelord revels in his vulgarity, though most of the humor is from the self-deprecating perspective of the title character and is an over-the-top satirical commentary on impoverished living. '97B&C is a touching showing of vulnerability, which is a welcome change of pace for the album. There are a number of "skits" that I just dislike in albums that could better be done without...the rap trope of recorded phone calls that someone thought was funny was tired even in '99. Overall an enjoyable album, a lot of classics that still hold up, and still manage to make me blush.

Listening to Eminem reminds me of my angsty middle school years when I thought I was hard. It definitely has not aged well in terms of content. Musically still holds up very well though. And funny enough I got this album on February 13, 2022 the same day Eminem performed the Super Bowl Halftime show.

Very dark, very over the top , very shocking and very funny. I loved this when I was 12, probably more because I shouldn’t have been listening to it. Listening back you could say it’s not aged well, but is it anymore shocking than when it came out. Marshall Mathers is far superior but a great debut.

Wow, remember when Eminem was good! This isn't his most consistent album by any means, and he went on to perfect his approach on the Marshall Mathers LP, but it works well to define his sound and make a huge impact early on

4 for impact and nascent talent. Not my style, perhaps, but his talent for rhyming is undeniable. 2 for artistic merit.

On one hand, Slim Shady is a character. He's an immature, bratty young man, whose response to stresses in his life is to indulge in violent fantasies around the sources of stress, often women. He also likes to smoke weed and eat shrooms, which seems very mild compared to the 2020s. On the other hand, there's Eminem who is a brilliant lyricist and rapper. His flow feels revolutionary. I guess with a lot of iconic albums, while he shook things up with The Slim Shady LP, it wasn't his best work and it was but a sign of things to come.

Mixed feelings on this one -- I do think Eminem is an incredible rapper and lyricist, but I had a hard time with some of the tracks on this album, specifically some of the really dark physical and sexual violence. I get that he's "playing a character" and a lot of this was '90s "shock value" fare, but it really didn't age well and just because it might've been boundary-pushing then doesn't mean I need to enjoy all of it now. That all said, there is some really great production on this album and the songs that aren't overly-violent are pretty great.

"Dave pull up your pants, we need an ambulance, there's a girl upstairs talking to plants." Some of these rhymes have been deeply buried in my teen-aged mind for decades. Yeah it's violent, misogynist, homophobic, and all the other things and I'm not defending it. But criticizing this is likely going to a horror movie and complaining it was too violent, or going to a modern art exhibit and saying it sends the wrong message to kids--that's point, you're supposed to be offended and shocked! Not saying this a great work of art or anything but the context of how and why it came to be is important. Slim Shady is a symptom of many larger social problems that have gotten worse over the last 2 decades. If you're not mad after listening to this, you're doing it wrong!

Hi-'97 Bonnie & Clyde, Rap's original edgelord revels in his vulgarity, though most of the humor is from the self-deprecating perspective of the title character and is an over-the-top satirical commentary on impoverished living. Yeah pretty good

Not as essential as the follow-up, but it deserved to be everywhere in 99.

Still good tho

Was really expecting to enjoy this more than I did. Only really know his hits

Not bad, actually never listened to this completely, curious to hear more

Give him some credit for talent but not my cup of tea

Love eminem. Good debut

It is tough for me to give only 3 to my boy slim, but this is not his best, for sure, was still grooming to be the rap god we would know beyond this first album

Not a big rap guy

In his debut odyssey, Eminem transports us to the cartoonish, grotesque world of Slim Shady. Enter a parade of classroom violence, perverted teachers, microwaved guinea pigs and murdered women, with an occasional glimpse of a darker reality of mushroom overdoses, extreme poverty, warped role models. For as long as I could stomach it, I went along for the ride. No getting away from the sweary, abusive, homophobic elephant in the room: "The Slim Shady LP"'s obnoxious humour feels tailored toward wired and disillusioned teenagers of the 90s. And yes, the jokes are puerile, shlocky, designed to offend: date-rape of a 15 year old, a young child helping Slim dump her murdered mummy in the docks, nine inch nails through the eyelids.... I could go on. It's like a musical episode of South Park. In fact, what stands out most is how much of this album is played for laughs: songs are laced with sound effects, quotes, adlibs, narration from guest stars (see "Guilty Conscience"'s turn from Mark Avery) and interspersed with juvenile skits. The result is what feels like a novelty album, where Slim Shady's persona and humour is held above the actual music and the songs themselves. On first listen it's all about shock value, subsequently the skill of the wordplay begins to leap out. Which brings me to my main criticism of the lyrical content: just because it's all "ironic" or "fake" or "in character" doesn't always make it funny. The anarchic spirit of the late 90s doesn't seem to hold much sway in 2021, where re-enacting raping a "fat slut" to death in "As The World Turns" just isn't on. That said, the main strength of the album is Eminem's amazing lyrical skill- not a single line, a single word is wasted as piles of rhymes and half-rhymes are crammed into single lines. Some favourites? The graphic imagery of "hung my original self from the top bunk with a belt" and "nailed my foot to the floorboard of my Ford", the pairings of "sick sick bastard" with "picnic basket", "naughty rotten rhymer" with "Marty Shottenheimer", even the aforementioned "fat slut" swallowing Slim's "leg whole like an egg roll." Also huge kudos to "Brain Damage" for rhyming "orange juice" with "storage booth", "door hinge loose", "four-inch screws" and "foreign tools." Musically, I didn't find there was much going on. The lyrics are the centrepiece here, and there's not much shame in this when they're as strong as they are. Nevertheless, I think I would have got the same (if not more) out of this album from reading the words on paper than hearing it performed. The beats are simple and the samples and instrumentation aren't particularly dynamic. Most of it can be pared down to synthetic beats and bass; together with Eminem's nasal, harsh vocals, it's a cold and strident sound. A good tonal fit, but didn't make for a listening experience to draw me back in. "I'm Shady" with its sample of Curtis Mayfield/Ice-T is about as groovy as things get, and elsewhere the slow tempos and lack of variation dragged the album down a little. Still, it was garish, devilish and horrifying, and I couldn't look away through much of it. For lyrical flows, Eminem must have been second to none here- just a shame some of the subjects are too much for me and the music too little.

Enjoyed ‘Rock Bottom’ and ‘If I Had.’

Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would and I would have liked the chance to listen again. A solid 3*

Bit dated and cringy with some of the references. Nevertheless it was undeniably funny at times and some good rhymes and beats.

He's aight

This is almost a 4 star, but it's just a bit too long with redundant songs that don't stand out so much. But the good songs are good.

We are what we pretend to be. Eminem's skill as a rapper is undeniable, and his collaboration with Dre produced a lot of excellent work, but Jesus Christ has the lyrical content from this not aged well. I get the whole idea that Slim Shady is an alter ego and that the violence is meant to be cartoonish, but this shit is real hard to listen to in 2021. At the same time, I understand why Eminem rapping about his life on songs like Rock Bottom wouldn't sell while his more violent songs would.

I would say I am an Eminem fan, I bought one of his CDs in college and was obsessed with some of his older ones too, but I never really enjoyed his debut LP. Listening to it today, it grew on me a bit but nothing stood out. I especially didn't like all the skits which is par for the course for me (I typically don't like skits and interludes) but I've grown to like them more as I've gotten older. These I wasn't a fan of. I hope we see some of his other albums on this list and I'm glad we got this first one out of the way. The album cover is very interesting, guy with his kid on a pier and a dead body in a car under the full moon. Is that slim shady? Looks more like Husky Shady.

Generally a fan of eminem and listening to his albums is like looking back in time interestingly (even though I didn't really know his music growing up), but this album of his isn't my favorite. It's alright but not the one I'd choose to listen to.

U OK hun? x

Lyricism is so strong, but some of the content is really unpleasant to listen to, and I found that the beats got somewhat stale over the ~60 minute runtime. 6/10

Some absolute classics on this album, but it really drops off at the end for me unfortunately

Some classic songs on this. Strongest track: Guilty conscience with dr dre

It's hard to weigh up nostalgia with this one. Even back in the day I didn't love it, but it was just such a big album in the years I first started listening to music.

I get that this was a big album at the time, and a big deal for Eminem, but there are other hip hop albums from around the same time that I think are better. It's fine, I sort of enjoyed it, but not that much. 2 edgy 4 me maybe.

I feel like this album deserves a higher rating for its significance but I don't really like it as much as other eminem albums.

At least he's a good dad.

Might have enjoyed more about 15-20 years ago. Could listen to it again

Blast from the past in the best way. Stands up to time, still very clever lyrics lifted by a good selection of samples from some classic songs. However, the content become vulgar instead of playfully rude as the album goes on.

Love me some Eminem but this isn’t my favorite.

Influential, but not my fav.

An interesting snapshot of what was and wasn’t offensive at the turn of the century. Technically brilliant, but the schtick starts to run thin rather quickly.

Obviously Eminem’s talent is evident, but the lyrics, sound, and production are quite immature. The album is good enough to notice Eminem’s vast potential and want more music in the future, but lacking enough to not want to listen to it any more than the rare reminiscent indulgence.

A lot of the album is very same-y. I don't enjoy the music as much as other hip hop artists and albums. I respect his talent, but I hate the subject matter.

I’m glad I listened to Eminem because I haven’t done so before. I enjoyed it; it’s pop music with limited substance in the lyrics but I can’t knock it.

An angry, angry young man. The title track is still great but boy, this guy went through a lot. He has a nice flow, though.

Regular 7/10

Not a rap fan, but this wasn’t too bad.

I understand his skill and musicianship. Can't understand how much he wants to offend.

He's terrible, but his sound is really interesting and innovative. Probably at least a 3; let's see exactly how many songs are good. After listening to the whole thing for the first time, it's only a 3. He IS really unique and innovative to my ear, but his lyrics are just too much, and I really didnt' get into very many of the songs.

not my favorite Eminem but still catchy enough

I really appreciate this album, but don't necessarily enjoy listening to it. Has a pretty angry energy This album sounds surprisingly current for how old it is, which I think is a testament to how big of an impact Eminem has had in the rap world. His use of different voices for characters, word play, rhymes, etc is super interesting and engaging. Favorite track was probably "My Fault". I enjoyed the raw production of this album quite a bit as well.

Disturbing

A little aggressive for my current tastes but still sounds incredible!

I can appreciate Eminem’s abilities and his place in the ‘pantheon of rap,’ but I honestly can’t listen to this album. It’s like he just picked a bunch of topics to be edgy or contrarian about and then rapped about them. I felt similarly about it when it came out in 1999 (when I was 21) and my opinion hasn’t changed in the years since.

Lots of funny lines here, and some nice beats. I'm not a huge fan of horror movies, and listening to this was sort of like watching one. I see why it is well-regarded, but I probably won't be listening again. Featuring West Coast hip hop, G-funk and horrorcore musical styles, the majority of The Slim Shady LP's lyrical content is written from the perspective of Eminem's alter ego Slim Shady, whom he created on the Slim Shady EP (1997). The Slim Shady LP contains cartoonish depictions of violence and heavy use of profanity, which Eminem referred to as "made-up tales of trailer-park stuff," describing it as horror film-esque, in that it is solely for entertainment value. Although many of the lyrics on the album are considered to be satirical, Eminem also depicts his frustrations of living in poverty.

Tracks: My Fault, Rock Bottom, Cum on everybody

glad i finally sat through this, and it's funny to think of the uproar when it came out.

I was pleasantly surprised. Music-wise it still weak, but the lyrics were interesting

I mean it exists.

Sikkert bra, men ikkje min kopp med chai

Childhood classic.

glad I listened, a classic with great narration

Some really great tracks with incredible lyricism, in amongst some questionable content. Also not a fan of skits in general - could definitely do with cutting these as the album already runs a bit long. Still, a great hip-hop record that (mostly) stands the test of time. 3.4

It's pretty good, I vastly prefer some of the albums that come after this though.

It’s ok but better was to come

Aah men kul ändå ju.

i mean i've already listened to this before but this is the first time i'm listening to it since turning into a legal adult (18+) so lets see if it holds up

Classic slim shady. Not my favourite album, but still a pretty solid one from Em.

Nice debut

Not my kind of hip hop... a generous 3!

well... there are some catchy beats here but it feels like the fundamental goal was to be as offensive as possible... which makes it really hard to give any shits about!

Just not good dude, at least the Marshall Mathers EP has slim shady which is a song I enjoy, but I really don’t see anything good about the album

lots of talent here but most of it is going towards making some "LOL are you triggered bro?! XD" type shit and i'm not an edgy 12 year old boy so it doesn't do much for me. 2.5

An album for a different time. To hard to listen all the way through.

I haven’t listened to this since it came out. While I still respect the talent, I found character or not, the ultra violence and misogyny was beyond hard to listen to. 2/5

I had Kid Rock yesterday and this today. Apparently the generator thinks I'm a middle school kid or something. I wasn't a fan of this back when it came out, and I still am not. I do respect the differences between Eminem and Kid Rock, and this was far superior in every way. That being said, it was about as unenjoyable to listen to as the KR album. There were a few moments of sincerity, but they were immediately undercut with vile lyrics. I really need tomorrow to be The Carpenters or something like that to help cleanse the palette a bit.

not another eminem

Imagine how unfunny Jerry Sadowitz would be if there was one word he wouldn't say for fear of causing offence. He's a great rapper, when it's good (my name is), it's good but most of this just gets boring. How many rape fantasies is too many in one work? Pretty low number for me.

To be fair to Eminem, people only got tired of edgelords after we all got on the internet and couldn’t get away from them. He’s extremely talented at writing rhymes, but the content of those rhymes are eye roll inducing. Dr. Dre’s production goes crazy though.

Meh. Eminem tells stories in rhyming couplets to edgy white kids in the 2000s.

This was juvenile in 1999. It still is—and I’m 27 years older now. No thank you. 1.5?

1.75 - I've always liked the way he raps. Hard to listen to in ways similar to that N.W.A. album, but I at least have some nostalgia for a song or two.

As a very casual Eminem listener, it’s pretty clear to me that this album was just the beginning, and there was a lot of room for improvement. Not my favorite. 2/5.

Guy knows his way around a rhyme scheme, gotta give him that. And he's funny from time to time. But nothing else really stands out about this album. Enjoyed it as a younger man - now seems wholly unremarkable.

Do we really need a second song about not giving a fuck? I'd be lying if I said I didn't listen to "My Name Is" a million times in 6th grade. I thought I would have to say the same about other songs on this album, but I didn't recognize anything else. I guess this is slightly better than The Marshall Mathers LP, but it's still riddled with misogyny and homophobia. I guess it gets a 2 just because it has one song that I don't dislike.

Better than expected.

It’s hard to overstate how this album dominated pop culture for a while in 1999. I thought then and now that there are a couple good tracks and a bunch of filler. Some of the lyrics haven’t aged so well.

Not for me.

Liked this when it came out but it hasn't aged well.

Pas client.

The beats and delivery are pretty good, but being edgy for the sake of being edgy doesn’t really make a great album in my opinion. Likes: Role Model; Rock Bottom; Just Don’t Give a Fuck

Whilst Marshall does an amazing job of being as offensive as he possibly can, this was a hard slog to get through. Lots of dodgy lyrics with themes of murdering girlfriends and trying to shag anything that moves undoubtedly appeals to rabid teenagers, but I find it tiring now I’m in my 50s.

Eminem is a good rapper and this album has some really good songs about economic hopelessness but also so many of the lyrics have aged atrociously. It was tough to listen at times.

I like Eminem, but I do think this album’s a little juvenile.

suppose this is where eminem came from. not bad for a 27yo. ... or at least it seems so until you get midway through the album, where it gets pretty horrible 💥my name is

I came into this album really hoping to gain an appreciation for Eminem. It did not work. Ridiculously dumb lyrics. 2 stars because there is some decent music hidden under it all.

its just not for me

Look, this album came out when I was in 8th grade and it hit my school like a nuclear explosion. There was a certain kind of kid (boy) that became completely obsessed with this record, spawning all manner of jokes, references, and all around edginess. I'm glad to say I was not in that set, and kind of hated Eminem's whole thing right from the get go. I was pretty into the Beastie Boys at the time, and Eminem just seemed to be not nearly as cool. He was missing any of the playfulness that the Beastie's had, substituting shock and edgy jokes in a way that made me (and still makes me) kind of queasy. I can appreciate Em's lyrical talent, and the production on the album is alright, but overall this still doesn't really do anything for me. Brings me back to awkward times in middle school. 2/5.

He’s got the beat. He has a command of rapping rhythms and vocab…and, on this album, not liking his words/messages

Couldn’t finish this. Got really boring

5 / 10

My opinions on this haven’t really changed despite several efforts to listen beyond the shock tactics. Eminem still seems like the poster-boy for the manosphere culture, employing the “hey, I might say these things, but that doesn’t mean I actually mean them, I am just playing - it’s all about the clicks and likes, and if you guys believe in my words, that’s your problem”. The tunes are catchy, his delivery is good, but ultimately this is still just a skinny white boy’s wet dream.

Not a rap fan, but, Eminem, at least is understandable, and his songs have meaning.

Obviously I see why this was included, but I didn't like Eminem then, when I was squarely in his target demographic of preteens to teens (apart from a few of his hits), so never expected to like him as an adult. Time hasn't changed that (although I listen to much more hip hop now in general), and his edge lord humour hasn't aged well at all. The first time I listened, I stopped at 97 Bonnie & Clyde. Horrific stuff, no idea what he was thinking there. I tried again and ended up skipping through a lot of the songs. The only ones I found worth listening to were My Name Is and Rock Bottom. I really did try to empathise with him as someone who obviously had a difficult life, but it's hard to when he specifically set out to make himself unlikeable. He has got undeniable talent, I just can't stand most of his lyrics.

Eminem is very gen x core. I can see how this started his career

Este dico al menos tien "My name is" y la pareja de "Just don't give a fuck" y "Still don't give a fuck". Sería un 2,5 aprobado.

Mostly misogynistic songs with "My Name is" as the outlier. I expected more

Cool beats, but I don't really dig the overly macho kind of lyrics .. Too long for my taste.

Wow problematic

Well… like him, but this album is just too much for me. Subject matter, etc. Maybe I’ve only ever heard cleaned up versions of his songs! 😂

I've never really understood the appeal the Eminem

As I’ve gotten older, I can appreciate him as an artist and an all-time great. When this came out, I was not a fan and listening to it now. Glad I didn’t listen to that when it came out.

that's gonna be a yikes from me, dawg. i would simply use my skill and experience in a different manner.

I didn't like this album much back in its day, despite several friends loved it. Listening to it today, it was better than I remembered, but that is damning with faint praise. Eminem is a brilliant rapper, and his lyrics are creative, but seriously deranged. The production is very good, but the overall package is too long, and the skits are just really bad.

Oof. This album was not made for me. AT. ALL. The one thing that I can appreciate is Eminem's storytelling (if you can call it that) and his snarky lyricism; it is so Eminem and entertaining. However, I could literally never picture myself listening to this on my own accord again. There were very few songs that would be normal to listen to outside of the context of the album.

Not as good as i thought it would be. Lyrics aged poorly.

This has dated. It’s from the time when hip-hop albums were filled with skits, which is just a waste of time and effort. The lyrics are poor and, like all Eminem tracks, filled with language and intent that needs to be put in a bin and set on fire. It’s well produced, but beyond that I can’t give it any praise. Sad that stuff like this will be held in posterity as something that is part of the cultural record.

‘Cause when I smoke out, I hit the trees harder than Sonny Bono (oh no). This line saved it from a one (1) star.

This album is so conflicting, as is much rap with commonplace misogyny / glamourised violence towards women and homophobia. Even with it being hidden behind a persona, it's more the influence on listeners (especially young boys) that is the main issue. The production by Dre is great and a lot of the flows are obviously good, but this album is an absolute slog and leaves a dreadful taste in the mouth for someone who has respect for women & LGBTQ+..

what the... favorites???: cum on everybody; just dont give a fuck; Bad Meets Evil

Pretty rough to listen to today.

this shit sucked in 1999, it double-sucks now

It was fine … but not my favourite Eminem

This kind of sucks. It's not playing into any of his strengths. Guilty Conscience is a good idea for their styles. This is only on the list because of what he went on to do.

I like the concept for Guilty Conscience. This doesn't age that well. It's overall kind of flat sounding. Eminem is a good lyricist, better than this. This is too long for what it is.

I like to think we’ve moved beyond the days of a hip hop album having a bunch of skits

This is surprisingly less noxious than the Marshall Mathers LP, probably because Eminem had something to prove here, and when he got successful, he indulged in his worst tendencies. There's still plenty of bad shit on this one too. The homophobia isn't as pronounced here, but the rape talk and gleeful nihilism are toxic. You can say he's doing a character, and I'll buy that to a point—but how many of the 10+ million people who bought this album thought that? And there's no reason this needs to be an hour with a million stupid skits. 2.5, but rounding down.

Clever. Musical. I’ll never put it on again.

Dated, repetitive.

Good sound effects and production but otherwise unlistenable

2.5 I never really connected with the shock lyrics when this first came out, and I definitely don't now. Prefered the Marshal Mathers LP, yeah, I know it has similar themes maybe Im just more familar with it.

The guy has talent, no question. I've never actually listened to a Eminem album in full. I do know a lot of the singles though and I was kind of excited to have an Eminem album to listen to. As this album goes though its; - too long, felt like it was dragging on, and i'd lost interest. - subject matter is too often not ok. I get he's being controversial and confrontational and likely playing into a persona, and hopefully it's tongue in cheek, but rape, domestic violence are not laughing matters. I listen to the lyrics, and it turned me off liking a fair chunck of the tracks. It's a pass from me.

This album is the reason I used to hate Eminem.

This doesn’t hold up for me at all. Obviously talented with rhymes, but this was a rough listen today.

Aged like milk

FAR too long, couple of nice ideas, won't play again.

This didn’t hold up very well for me

ROUGH listen. I'm old enough to remember when Eminem first got famous, and its clear he's a talented rapper. But so many of the lyrics here have aged HORRIBLY -- the casual homophobia, the extremely violent lyrics toward women. It was one thing in the nineties, but it feels entirely worse now. This was a struggle to listen to. Best song on the album: My Name is (it's catchy, at least) Favorite lyrics: Nothing grabbed me off this one.

Couldn't make it through. I know there's a lot of satire in this album but it's still too much talk about violence, drugs, and crime in it for me to listen to it at the moment.

I know this was a different time, but just no.

So it comes with a Public Service Announcement at the beginning saying Children Should Not Listen and Don't Try This at Home and proceeds to 90 minutes of songs that are so extreme in their homophobia, misogyny, social dislocation and violence that toy wonder what exactly was the intention of it all. Is it some sort of Randy Newman satirical character study? Is it meant to be taken seriously? (A lot did) Is it a jet black humour performance in the vein of The Naked Lunch? Whatever it is, it's hardly the most mature album ever, and some of the songs sound like the demo versions of songs from a better album. Another reviewer here said that it was like being trapped in a room with a 13 year old obnoxious brat and they're not wrong.

He hasn’t hit his peak. A very angry album with some really weird creepy songs. It’s interesting to listen to given what he has become.

I can see why one or two songs stood out ("My Name Is") but there wasn't a ton here in terms of lyrics, beats, etc. that impressed me. I really don't want to sound like a prude but a lot of the subject matter was very off-putting, because it doesn't really serve a purpose other than shock value. I like a lot of Eminem's work but the debut was in desperate need of some maturing (especially in songwriting). But Eminem's talent as a rapper is unmistakeable, even if buried under cringey attempts at humor and shock.

Rap is a genre I've never cared much for, and I was pleasantly surprised by how funny and raw this album could be. The second verse in Brain Damage is when I started to see Eminem's strength as a storyteller. It's a solid debut with a lot of remarkable lines and stories, I was impressed by Eminem's flow at many points during this album. The low points of the album like the skits and If I Had bring it down, and I think a lot of songs have bland hooks and weak outros, with production that's not very strong. It was a fun listen with some great moments and lines but falls short as a good album experience.

When this album was released, I was a 12 year old straight boy, the target audience. Now I'm a 38 year old queer woman, so safe to say this hasn't really held up at all. It's a shame, because Eminem's got great flow and Dre's an all-timer of course. That's the only reason this isn't getting a 1 - musically it's fantastic, lyrically it's one of the worst albums on this list. Also, I guess at least it's not as whiny as The Eminem Show.

I used to be a fan of Slim Shady when I was a kid. Unsurprisingly, I'm not anymore. Eminem has never really been a good lyricist outside of a few songs, and his Slim Shady stuff was almost always just shock value music. Obviously, that was the point: Slim Shady was Eminem needing an outlet for his frustrations with the world. And he's got a good flow to his raps! I just don't actually wanna listen to what he's actually saying.

I recognize Eminem's chops. Too bad I can't sit through what he has to say.

Eminem is one hell of a rapper. His rhyming and flow are impressive. That said the album is incredibly juvenile.

eh, music for 14 year olds.

Not for me. I hear the talent, and the story telling. But it's just not for me. 2/5

Misogynistic man raps really quickly over Dr Dre's peak

He is recognizably talented, but given the lyrics I am not the audience for this album.

I don't like Eminem at all, and I never have. He's technically a good rapper, but I find his nasally voice annoying. Some of these beats are good but I can't overlook his voice I'm not above stupid or nonsense humour, but this is juvenile in a way you find funny when you're 14 that you quickly grow out of and cringe at in retrospect. I know Slim Shady is a character but he just comes across as an edgelord that you would find making offensive jokes on 4chan. I thought he was maybe 20 when he recorded this, but he was the same age I am now. Embarrassing. Man, grow up Highlights: If I Had

This was an album that a friend played on repeat when it first came out. It's a good album but not his best.

Irritante. 2/5

I like some Eminem but this wasn't it

In 99 this was a wild album. But now I'm 44 it was just irritating.

Meh. Really didn’t appreciate the rape and murder fantasies, kinda ruined the rest of the vibe for me

🤷‍♂️

The first album I ever obsessed about, I will listen to it again it's been a while This did not age that well, still the best Eminem album though I still like some of the edginess, it's a fun album Great cover in my opinion too It hurts to give this a low rating Rock bottom is gemuinly a great song

When this came out, it was huge. I didn't understand it then, and I still don't understand it.

wow guilty conscience did not age well

So versatile, this album is going all kinds of places

I've never liked Eminem and I still don't.

It's hard to rate this album. The music and overall style and tone of the raps are strong. The content is unbelievably offensive in places.

only know My Name Is, the rest is kinda meh

borderline 1

Some good ideas. I just can't see why you'd want to listen to it more than once.

I listened to this a lot at middle school and looking back I'm really not sure why. Shock value maybe? This really is not for me, but I can acknowledge that it isn't terrible, it definitely makes me cringe though.

When I was a kid listening to some of his music for the first time it scared the shit out of me. I was fully convinced this was a real dude and these were his real stories. Enjoyed re-listening, but not really my style anymore. Got some bars though

28.09.25 #4 Favourite tracks: my name is Rate: 4 It was hard to listen to. I couldn't wait for it to end.

I can hear his development of his rapping style on a few of these songs but I really didn't care for any of the material.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this album. I certainly listen to all the songs. I just couldn't decide if he liked seeing about it or if it was more like a warning. It's definitely a commentary. I just didn't know what kind.

It's obvious that Eminem has extreme talent throughout this record. The rhymes are great, his ability to slant words to make them fit the rhyming scheme is incredible, and it's well produced. But man, after 15 minutes of listening to the edgiest, middle school ass lyrics, it gets tiring. Genuinely surprised he managed such a successful career after a debut like this.

Slightly better than the last time I had to listen to this guy

2.0 hes lucky he can sing cause this is so close to a 1

Some creative production techniques and it did feel cinematic as he intended, but I think a lot of the appeal is shock factor and not something I’ll probably return to (apart from the great Labbi Siffre sample on “My Name Is”)

Repetitive and tiresome but he’s good at rhyming and knows a lot of rude words.

Humorous lyrics, some self deprecating, backing tracks pretty mundane.

Some nostalgia here. Probably not listened to it since I was about 14. The lyrics are all over the fucking place. Almost every song is about him taking crack or smack, until the song where he says he's doesn't so smack or crack. Before rapping about shooting up in the very next song.

Massively overrated

Gets a bit wearing.

This a dark album - I understand it is a character of sorts he is playing. I think the anger and misogyny hints at quite a bit of his early life experiences and is a dark take on a reality that is not as far off as we’d like to think. Less stars because I would never listen to this but Eminem is very skilled

This isn't very good. I like his delivery, but I don't like what he's saying and the beats get boring quickly. The skits aren't funny either. 2/5

Unfortunately not for me! Hi, my name is Eli! And I don’t like Eminem.

Two stars for legacy, but did not like

Thought the album was over hyped when it came out and still do.

Despite my hate for hip hop rap crap, Eminem is the only artist producing that stuff that I can lend an ear to. Putting aside the misogynistic lyrics, foul language and violence Eminem can produce a great tune and he his at times quite humorous. He also tells us that is music is not based on reality but rather like a grotesque horror movie who the majority do not believe to be true. So why not apply this to music? An interesting concept when music over the years has been used as a political tool and a means of getting a point across. But then again I can think of quite a number of movies which have been used for propaganda and to convey a serious message. So that argument does not really stand up. Which leaves us with the music. Whilst there are quite a few toe tappers it is impossible to ignore having the unpleasant lyrics depicting a life of grime being served up in my home. 2/5 10/9/25

#117/1001. It took me quite a bit to start not liking this album. Then not too long after to hate it. Or something in between. Seems like there is excellent humor, storytelling and production, but he just doesn't giiiveee aaa fuuuuccckkkkk, and decides to act and rap like a thirteen year old brat with a backwards cap and newly disovered fact that some words slap.

Gross. One star for content. I hated this album from my first listen as an 11 year old. Em's rhymes and flow are still developing here but he's still miles ahead of a majority of other rappers of literally any Era. Absolutely flawed record just for the hate it spews. Glad there are later better honed records I can rate higher.

Sorry Marshall, not my thing. There's some good stuff on here but I can't get past his fixation on hurting and killing women. I guess I'm just too easily offended 🤷‍♀️

Angry, whiny white boy, worshipping is own cock. Making stacks off his so called misery. The tough guy act don’t really fly when you 5’6. Hard pass.

Ok. Didn’t age well.

Not good

White boy rap 3/10

He has better albums

listened during parkrun, probs only heard half :/

Musically good and I get that a lot of the lyrics are from a character, not a person. But the misogyny and homophobia is still a challenge.
