Reviews (page 3 of 7)

I've been aware of Bad Brains influence for years but never got around to listening to them. Was pleasantly surprised by this album, it's the first on this list that I've wanted to listen to twice for a very long time. It still sounds up to date and fresh.

More aggressive than i recall

not as punk as i expected but a good record

I first heard of Bad Brains when I was reading a knock-off biography of Dave Grohl when I was in college. I didn’t anything about the DC music scene, so I had no frame of reference for who they were, but as I’ve learned more about music, I’ve wanted to check them out since they’re so influential. I’ve been looking forward to this album for a bit, so I’m excited to fire this one up! This album wound up not being what I really expected, but I still enjoyed it. I was expecting a more straightforward hardcore punk album, but this album was a really unique blending of several styles. Merging reggae philosophy with and eighties hard rock sound made this album really enjoyable to listen to. The guitar playing was great, and I’m a sucker for that echoing guitar effect that was popular in the eighties, and this album utilized that sound to perfection. “Secret 77,” “She’s Calling You,” and “Sacred Love” were my favorite songs on the album, but I thought that the album worked really well as a whole. I could see myself listening to this again some day, and it makes me want to check out other Bad Brains albums.

Rockin’! The guitarist has chops!!

Not too bad, good to listen to but I doubt I'd rush out and buy it

This might be one of the best albums I hadn’t ever heard before! The hardcore punk mixed with some reggae vibes really fucking rules. It’s pretty blistering and sounds very tight. 4.3 stars!

Fierce and soulful

In the quest for the test to fulfill an achievement Everybody's only going to pursue themselves When the fact of the matter is they just don't care To extend a helping hand to anyone else So tell me why did you have to lie And try to make me all confused about the USA When the fact of the matter is you just don't care To comprehend or understand a single word I say I don't wanna have I go against I Well, I don't wanna have I go against I Well, let me tell ya The same old story, no factual glory I against I against I against I against And I say I don't like it and I know I don't want it I against I against I against I against I against This is a pretty great album. 4/5

4.5 Arguably the second-greatest album from one of the all-time greatest punk bands. Many will point to Bad Brains’ self-titled debut as their magnum opus, an album that, if you’re not familiar, is basically like audible crack cocaine. Largely because of that, of all the bands to have inspired hardcore punk, I think it’s fair to point to Bad Brains as among the most seminal. So, I’m pretty sure that’s why this album gets shit - Lord knows whenever a punk band softens their sound in the slightest or cleans up their production, a bunch of mohawks and battle jackets are going to start labeling them sellouts. And honestly, that is a fair accusation in the case of a lot of punk bands, but not here in my opinion - this really feels like an evolution of the group’s sound that still manages to stay true to their roots. Hell, I think there’s even an argument to be made that this album is better than their debut - everyone remembers its bangers, but no one remembers the reggae interstitials that totally break up the flow. Anyway, this album kicks off with an absolute bang with four of the best punk songs to ever come from the DC scene hitting you one-by-one in a row. Intro, well-named, does a great job of setting up the title track, and before you can even process what you’ve been thrown into, you’re hit with my personal favorite song on the album, House of Suffering. Thank you Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland for introducing me to the song - I really think it’s the band’s finest moment (The Bled’s cover from the game is decent but definitely inferior). The energy is incredible, but the song really goes from 10/10 to 11/10 when singer HR starts screaming out the lyrics like he’s in agony. If I had to point to my single favorite lyric delivery from any punk song, “And all the nations lying/While all our people crying” may be it. Mom, Dad, I found my Christmas karaoke song this year. Re-Ignition is an incredible follow-up from there, but then the album ever so slightly slumps with Secret 77. As much as I decried the “sellout” label earlier, I have to admit the song is borderline poppy. And that’s what ultimately keeps this album juuuust outside of the 5 range for me - while I really like the rest of what it has to offer, it never seems to quite match the energy of the first four tracks. There are still some great moments for sure (I absolutely love Sacred Love), but nothing quite scratches the itch the beginning of this album gives you. Still, through and through, fantastic album, and definitely a must-listen imo. In an effort of my own to keep the energy of this review going, here are three fun facts to cap things off: 1. The reason HR’s voice sounds distorted on Sacred Love isn’t because of a studio effect. He recorded the vocals over a prison phone while serving time for a marijuana charge. 2. Beastie Boys were huge fans of the band, to the point that the group inspired them to take on a “BB” name of their own. Bonus - Bad Brain’s name comes from a Ramones song. 3. HR is credited with having coined the term “moshing”. The term he actually came up with was “mashing”, but people misunderstood the word due to his accent, and moshing stuck.

A good album. 8/10, would listen again.

This is #day47 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... coming back to this one for what must be the third time already. I decided to revisit it after getting the Circle Jerks record today, and it felt like the right moment to spin the Germs album I got a while ago. Am I in a hardcore punk mood? More yes than no. Either way, the truth remains the same: you're unlikely to find such a mix of hard rock, funk, metal, punk, reggae, and whatnot coming out of the mid '80s. The rhythm section is deliciously tight, and the riffs are next level. Guess I'm settling on a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day48.

Favorite Track: Re-Ignition

Some awesome grooves and guitar sounds on here, really enjoyed it

First listen! The third album from this proto-hardcore punk group has really tight compositions and strong performances from everyone. You can hear their previous history in jazz and reggae in their playstyle as they diverge from the more familiar punk forms of playing. Standout track: Hired Gun

got some mid 80s groggy murky punk music, with hints of new wave pop and even a bit of reggae here and there. song material is about identity, society, and confusion. the lyrical and musical content featured throughout is generally nice, especially for all you tried-and-true punksters out there looking for a few jams to mosh at. my favorite part of the album is absolutely the guitars. every single chug rattles your bones. there's a guitar riff that was sampled in a song by hive, all you newgrounds heads might recognize it.

Love Bad Brains. Great stuff. I wouldn’t say I Against I is as groundbreaking, original, or quite good as their self titled debut, but it still kicks ass. Their writing, instrumentation, and vocals are unmistakably their own. No big complaints or praises on the production, lyrics, or arrangements. Enjoyed this very much. 4/5

This is a much more hard rock/thrash album than their excellent debut, to the point that it almost sounds like a different band. It is still a pretty good album, though.

WOW. I did not expect to like this as much as I did. Maybe I can thank the album generator for expanding my musical horizons lol.

Very strange, but in a good way! The wild guitar mixed with the interesting vocals really worked together. I enjoyed most of the tracks. 8/10 Would I listen again? Yeah probably

Bad Brains diversify their sound but maintain a punk feel. There’s more variety melodically, rhythmically, and tempo wise than their hardcore beginnings. It’s funkier, it’s a bit more metallic, the instruments interact more. It still has that charging forward like a bull feel and attitude, but they’ve grabbed the bulls horns - it’s more controlled, more restrained. I prefer their more chaotic earlier material, but this is still good. And this band still rips, and each member is still talented.

Really interesting album. Different than I expected. Has more in common with 80s arena rock than punk music to me, very effective vocal performance as well.

I normally find punk/rock albums of this era a difficult listen, more due to production techniques and styles more than anything. Despite that, I did like this. A good variety of styles and sounds, if a bit flat sounding due to the production.

Classic. Great double feature with the Descendent's ALL (punk rockers discovered the metalhead guitar pedals). That said, I'm not crazy about the drum sound.

Kinda surprised at the lowish score here - I thought this was great. Immaculate vibes, incredible mix of different genres. Each song its own thing, the album moves quickly. I’ve heard of Bad Brains before but had never actually listened to them before! Glad I got to!

While I prefer their debut, this one was pretty good. :)

What a beautiful discovery. When the album started I couldn’t stop thinking how similar it sounded to Nirvana. Reading a little about it, it seems it was greatly influential in the 90s. Weird that I hadn’t listened to this in my 15s when I consider myself a hardcore punker.

I was impressed by this the more I listened. It’s not really a musical style I like but it is well done and unlike music that followed in its playfulness musically. Lyrically it is complex and pretty raw.

I really liked the mixing of genres present. I never thought that funk and punk could go well together but here we are.

High energy, intense rock album. Short but sweet 3.5.

Whoa rad

Good, really like they’re style

This shit goes hard.

Rasta punk eh?? I like it!

This entry partially makes up for the criminal omission of Sublime on the list. 4 amends out of 5

Never heard of Bad Brains so idea what to expect, but this was cool. Nice blend of punk and metal, will definitely be exploring their catalogue. 3.75/5

I like it.

I enjoy this album but I always thought that Bad Brains were just a teensy bit overrated. This album is a solid listen and the title track in particular is great but I don't think this album is as great as it's hyped to be. Their debut should be here instead

Right up my alley! :D

Yum. This slaps

Another one I've been meaning to listen to for a while I really enjoyed this one even though some tracks felt a little cluttered/messy

i liked it a lot and will listen agai

After 2 listens, I'm going for a generous 4. Probably more of a 3.5. Favourite song was Re-Ignition

Finally something interesting to discover.

A bit off the wall, but definitely one of the better skate punk style albums I've heard. Gotta be in the right mood for it. But good

Another Bad Brains banger. I do think their adding in metal and funk is cool, although I appreciate their straight hardcore (and occasional reggae) version too. 3.75/5

s/t is always going to be my Bad Brains of choice, but this is a worthy addition all the same. Terrific mix between punk and dub. B+

INFLUENTIAL Warrants another listen, but is cited by so many bands (Beastie Boys, Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Clutch, Green Day, the Offspring, the Roots, Lamb of God, No Doubt...) for its' blend of hardcore punk with reggae, funk, and a host of other genres. Short and sweet at just over 30 minutes, an important study of reference material

Ai että miten hienoa ja rikasta hooceeta! 4/5

I Against I saw Bad Brains almost fully depart from their hard hitting fast paced style. Here they experiment with more conventional 80s genres such as metal and post punk. There’s also a bit of funk rock. Their instruments even sound more 80s, using partially phased guitars and reverb drums. The record is a bit more melodic and not as in-your-face as their previous efforts. That being said, I still think this is a good album. Some of their more well regarded songs are on here, such as the title track.

Great experimental hardcore punk album! 4/5

Surprisingly good. Great production.

Der Radiohaed Effekt: nicht die erste Wahl aber immer solide und meist gut.

Much less aggressive than the previous Bad Brains I got. Much more new wave and a dark 80s feel. I enjoyed this.

I Against I was a pretty good album for what it was. IT has a lot of the typical punk themes you would find in a punk album like H.R.'s voice but you can see quite a lot of thrash metal influences with this album with all the fast guitar work. The vocals did have some interesting bits too like Sacred Love being recorded over a prison phone. It could be a bit forgettable at points but it was still a good album i would give a 3.5 Best Song: Sacred Love Worst Song: Secret 77

lots of good grooves on this album. the beginning of funk rock. reminds me of early RHCP and Living Colour.

I especially like that he recorded some of it from prison.

\"I Against I\" by Bad Brains is a groundbreaking album that blends hardcore punk with reggae and funk influences, creating a unique and influential sound. Released in 1986, the album showcases the band's incredible musicianship, with blistering guitar work, tight rhythms, and intense vocals. Tracks like \"I Against I,\" \"Sacred Love,\" and \"Re-Ignition\" are standout examples of Bad Brains' ability to seamlessly blend genres, creating a sound that is both aggressive and groove-oriented. The reggae-infused tracks like \"The Prophet's Eye\" provide a welcome contrast, showcasing the band's versatility. While the production on \"I Against I\" can be a bit raw at times, it adds to the album's overall energy and intensity. The album's lyrics touch on themes of spirituality, social justice, and personal struggle, adding depth to the music. Overall, \"I Against I\" is a landmark album in the punk and alternative music scenes, and it earns a 4/5 rating for its innovation, musicianship, and lasting influence.

fedt album!! kan lidt bedre lide den med lynet. fanme punk at optage vokaler over telefonen fordi man er i fængsel

I kinda like this - 3.5, so rounded up this time Don't really know that it is a Must Listen tho...

spiritually sound drums loud guitar ripping bass heart beating in lungs

Really enjoyed this. More new wave than I was expecting

This album sounded like it was made for the 2000's, crazy!

First Bad Brains album -- some songs are a little more punk oriented, some have a more metal edge, some of it reminds me of Fishbone's Truth and Soul album. I like the guitar work by Dr. Know. I Against I, House of Suffering, and She's Calling You are my favorites.

There were some catchy tunes on this one

Goes hard, legit hardcore, and whilst the genre is not a favourite, no doubt this is a significant, influential and important recording.

Pretty good

Opener brings the speed and energy. Love the main riffs on House of Suffering and Re-Ignition. Secret 77 slows it down and goes in a different direction. Nice vocals and chord progressions. Solos too! Can't tell if this wants to be punk, or metal, or something else (new wave? last track sounds more like hard rock than anything) but it's a concise and enjoyable half hour.

Great music when I need to move my body and bang my head !!!

Pretty damn great

This went hard, I like the singer's zany voice

This was a banger of an album

Really enjoyed this, as I've been meaning to check Bad Brains out. I only knew them for "Banned in DC". I also had no idea they were black guys, which gives a fresh angle on the 80s hardcore scene for sure. I also like that they are more melodic than some of their contemporaries and don't just try to play everything heavy and fast. Will definitely be returning to this.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

Pushed the right buttons, jammed the right jams, and grooved some grooves I did not see coming. Bit clunky but solid.

Really good album. Does not sound like the 80's. Genre crossing. I can hear that Living Color would call them an influence.

My first reaction was middling; it read as hardcore and I was willing to give it a benefit for pioneering (I know Dave Grohl has high praise for this group) but in retrospect was not unique and not to my taste. But then the album continued. Funk, metal, reggae, multiple unique vocal approaches, lighter songs and then more intense ones...this is really something of an accomplishment and the talent is clear. This deserves it's place in history and on the list, no question.

Actually fucking loved it New skill unlocked

Pretty fun listen

Du rock qui selon moi n’a pas pris une ride

When I first turned this on I was expecting to hate it. As I listened it grew on me. It's not my favorite but it was an enjoyable experience. And at only about 30 minutes it doesn't overstay its welcome.

The tightness and musical skill already puts them above most punk bands of the era

WAAAAAY better than i ever thought they’d be!

Getting more into 80’s punk rock, I dig it!

Liked it. Honestly very little to say about this album. I like this sort of thing. Favourite song Sacred Love.

It's not fair that Bad Brains get dismissed as hardcore too often, their ability to switch up styles is unprecedented for the genre.

I love it when I get an album that does not look like any promise, and it finishes being a great album and also an influence for bands and artists I'm a fan. Also, I'm increasingly enjoying discovering numerous bands of proto-punk (and its subgenres) together with actual punk bands I was unaware of. 4 stars, without a doubt.

I thought this was a really interesting Album, all the songs were really good with my favourite being Re-Ignition, which is a banger of a song. Otherwise not much to say give it a listen.

Short and sweet. This is bloody great. I'm a fan of punk anyway and like, this is pretty great. I think it does lose form a bit in the second half but sod it, not a bad song on here. Would recommend Stand out songs: - Re-Ignition - Secret 77

Did not think reggae and punk would mix but I actually enjoyed the experience

Crescent fresh

Not really digging the vocals, but the band sounds sick.

Listened to this album a few times, it's good and influences bands today but the self-titled is so much better

I actually listened to this for the first time a few months ago when I went through a brief whole hardcore punk phase. These guys were at the forefront of that movement that lives on today. I Against I has some crazy vocals that evoke Faith No More vibes -- looked it up and apparently Chuck Mosely (of FNM) was in Bad Brains, but 4 years after this album. Love the riff on Re-Ignition. Feels like the Offspring with balls. All around, I dig the vibe of this album and respect it for what it is. Bad Brains aren't my favorite of the hardcore scene, but this is a great album through and through.

This is such an interesting album. Idk how i would describe it if someone asked me to describe it but for some reason i found myself saving a bunch of songs

not bad

This was not what I expected from the cover art. I liked it… not too 80s

Hell yeah! Not as heavy as their earlier stuff but it still goes! They slowed down the tempo and kept it heavy

brings me back to high school...

Enjoyable guitar and bass work. 7/10

Fierce.

That was a crazy mix of punk, heavy metal and reggae, short enough to not get stale. Very 80s film soundtrack-y and reminded me of the very limited faith no more I've heard. Recording vocals over the phone while charged with marijuana distribution is about as punk/reggae as it gets so they definitely lived the ethos.

Classic D.C. hardcore band but this album is far from that sound. The album got some great songs like "I against I", "Re-Ignition" and "Let Me Help". Bad Brains got great energy through the tracks and the songs have a varied style as they mix in reggae and heavy metal. Overall it's a pretty cool album.

This was a great way to kick off the day! History of hardcore right there.

This was rad as hell

The guitar riffs in that album were solid. The thing I didn't like was the singing in some of the songs. It didn't tie very well for me with the more metal-y riffs. Other than that, quite a solid album

Hey this is great. We need more Black punk music. Silly fun angry fast and rocking. And it's barely half an hour! Checks basically all my boxes.

Great Punk album; definitely adding some of the songs to my hardcore playlist

First I love the S/T album probably would have been my pick for the list. However this album really went in a different direction, probably more Metal at this point, the reggae is subtle. The only issue with this album is it's a bit enven. I against I, Re-Ignition are amazing but Secret 77 and Return to Heaven are a bit weak.

I was not as familiar with this one as i was with their self titled album. Good, you can hear them starting to branch out from pure hardcore. Worth another listen.

I was not familiar with this album at all. And it also wasn't what I expected. But I found that I was really enjoying it, and will listen to it again!

I have heard about Bad Brains a lot over the years but have never gotten around to listening to them. Right off the bat, this is good but is aging as poorly as the rest of 80's metal. But, this is awesome. It's thrash. But punk as hell and it hits hard. Everything on this is so clean and punchy. Some of the vocals are silly looking back almost 40 years. But this album is great. I loved it and will be following Bad Brains on Spotify.

This has been on my "List" for several years now. I've listened to the ST a few times but I heard this album was a departure into a new sound so I was excited to finally check it out. As a big fan of the Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile it was very cool to hear what is very likely the inspiration for the development of their sound. Blending hardcore + punk + 80s pop. There are these moments in tracks like "Secret 77" where H.R. sounds like Bowie or Billy Idol. But then there are tracks like "Let Me Help" and "Return to Heaven" that remind the listener that this is indeed still some heavy shit. I love the experimental nature of this album. There was a part in "She's Calling You" where H.R. sings about "vibrating cosmic waves // spirit electricity" and there is this phasey feedback noise they played with. That's really cool! I am a big fan of when bands get to this point in their career where they can start trying new and different things, where they can push the boundaries of their genre or their "sound" and soar to new creative heights. Giving this one a 4/5 because I feel like the Bad Brains team made something unique with this one when you consider their past material. But in addition to making something unique they also managed to make it all killer, no filler (in my opinion). Each song was interesting to me (perhaps the novelty may wear off at some point) and kept me wondering what I'd hear next!

I Against I is as a big a leap as any hardcore band I can think of made in the mid-80s. The fact that Bad Brains are so influential to begin with, compounded with the fact that this 1986 album finds them branching out from their D.C. roots and experimenting with different sounds and ideas, makes them all the more so. The sheer number of guitar solos on this record is astounding—for a hardcore act—not to mention the funk vibes in numbers like “Secret 77,” the 80s-goth-ballad-y vocals on “Sacred Love” (reportedly recorded over the phone from prison where H.R. was serving time on marijuana charges), and the many moments that seem to predict everything from alt rock to neu metal to radio-ready pop punk in the decade+ to come. The proficiency, tenacity, and musicianship exhibited in all these genre-bending musical directions (and misdirections) is just gravy on top. “I Against I” has been covered by Jeff Buckley, Lamb of God, and Denzel Curry. I mean, what!? If that’s not influence I don’t know what is. Am I still more partial to the band’s iconic debut? Probably. But if you’re in need of more evidence that this band was great and wise beyond their genre-boundaries, you’ll find it in I Against I. An absolutely essential hardcore (post-hardcore?) work and every bit deserving of its place on this list.

Well, I've never heard of these guys before. I guess what they're doing sounds more 90s than 80s so I can imagine that they're that influential type that nobody outside of the music industry has ever heard of, but apparently inspired everyone else to make music that is both good and popular. Nothing wrong with this album - it's not too long, not to short. And does sound ahead of its time.

Not what I was expecting at all. seems a complete fusion of so many genres it doesn't really matter what it's listed at.

Probably the first Bad Brains I listened to. Regrettably I didn't properly get into the band until my mid-30s. I wish 13 year old me had better taste and better access to music. I had forgotten how melodic and almost metal this album was. Almost Misfits in places too. Worlds apart from their first album but listening to that straight after I Against I makes me appreciate how much they had grown in their sound

A classic foundational album for so much of the music that I love. Standouts: I Against I, House of Suffering, Re-Ignition, Let Me Help, Sacred Love, Return To Heaven

Great early hardcore punk!

Excellent hardcore punk, though it's clear it is a product of the mid 80s. I've always loved tracks 2, 3, 4 and 7 from the first listen however I think I may prefer the first two albums which include the odd dubby reggae number and where the production is more energetic and raw on the punk tracks. (4.0)

Pretty solid hardcore! It's fun listening to records like this and noticing how it's sounds matriculated into other, more mainstream albums I've heard.

It's weird having this as the only Bad Brains album on the 1001 list, however it's still solid and quite underrated by most Bad Brains fans.

Ugh. Growing up two hours south of DC I heard about BB all the time and specifically the antics of the lead singer H.R. But I could never listen to them all the way through. Maybe I didn't try hard enough, or maybe this just isn't as hard as it once was because I made it all the way through and to my surprise, it's listenable. I suppose Bad Brains broke the stereotype of black musicians being permanently tied to soul, jazz, reggae or rap and probably influenced one of my favorite bands of the late 80's / early 90's Living Colour and Ice-T's Body Count among others. Happy to have rediscovered this with fresh ears. https://www.presspop.toys/products/4560247870461

This was really quirky rap/rock/metal. 4/5

Bad Brains is too cool - hardcore, metal, funk? This is probably not my favorite album, but lots of respect for the band's innovations. 3.5 and rounding up.

Ja, Bad Brains vind ik goed. Ik ben erg benieuwd naar het album Bad Brains van Bad Brains, misschien is dat nog wel beter.

This may be the best Bad Brain release. Not quite the hardcore punk of their debut, they still played faster and more proficient than their punk forbearers. I remember travelling down to DC to see them and was blown away - especially by H.R.'s singing . While Dr. Know's guitar doesn't work for me as much when he stretches out as much as he does on this release, and it may be more metal than punk, but it is still damn good. I have to wonder if they would have received more mainstream play if they were a white punk band.

The last time I listened to these guys I found nothing to interest me. That was in 1985. This time they sound great!

Leuke metal/punk. En TIL dat deze band aan de wieg stond van de Hardcore scene

Feels very similar to a lot of albums on here, probably cuz there's a lot of punk rock. Nice to know though.

Already familiar with this brilliant album. Very pleased to know this is rated.

Like a weird buffet of your favourite foods stuck on your plate in odd combinations. Rock, punk, rap, funk, metal, and a bit of leftover late 70's/early 80's sneaking in now and again. I enjoyed this more than I expected to.

all over the shop & all the better for it

A hardcore skeleton with all kinds of neat things hanging from the bones. I was unsure about everything but the energy in the first half; The second side brings that and a bunch of other musicianship as well.

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: House of sufferig, Re-ignition, Sacred love, Hired gun

4.3 - They've clearly earned their reputation for being amazing musicians - Bad Brains is head and shoulders above peer bands. The fact that Black Flag and other lesser bands get more accolades to me stinks of racism. Great to hear black rockers that put Washington, DC on the map.

This really grew on me. I'll give it a low 4, I think. It was a 3 until late last night.

August 9, 2021 (Aug 18) This was pretty good but I'm not a fan of the vocals.

- feels strongly influential. Sepultura / ska / metalcore - innovative and diverse, thoughtful

Incredibly influential and groundbreaking. The instrumentation and lyrics are great and catchy. I'm not too versed on the history of pop punk vocals, but I feel like this is a good place to start. Highlights: 2, 3, 4, and 7.

Not as hardcore as we thought back in the day but still decent

Dig this, punk meets dub

Punk with face-melting, virtuosic heavy-metal guitar. I'm very into the vibe---with just 4 parts (drums, bass, 1 guitar, vocal, for most tracks I think) the mix is great. Lots of fast tracks, but track 4 e.g. is really groovy and catchy. Kind of a reggae groove to track 5---interesting change of pace and not *too* out of place. Track 7 has a very 80s vibe (think the Police plus hair rock). Track 9 is great, sounds a bit like a punkier Rush. I like the eclectic influences---I'd say the band is at its best when it sounds less like Van Halen, which fortunately is most of the time.

So much to like, such genre-crossing strength. Prodigious punk, hints of reggaeton, early alt-rock, uncaged aggression.

I feel like every band I ever saw at Warped Tour could trace their lineage back to this album. Very influential! I especially love the gang vocals and guitar riffs throughout.

What a surprise from 1986. I thought this record was fun, and had some punk and solos to it.

it was awesome

Angrier, punkier, funkier TV on the Radio. Out of left field album - really impressive, but not sure if I would listen often.

Never really listened to them but really enjoyed this

Este álbum é sólido, é curto e divertido de se ouvir. A sonoridade alegre de revolta é algo diferente ao que estamos habituados a ouvir no punk. Destaco o House of Suffering e o Sacred Love. Nota:7/10

Jams. Front to back jams.

4.6 nice

Me ha costado mucho entrar en su estilo, pero debo decir que es un disco muy bueno

Singular, muscular, badass

Bängeri! Kovaa punkkia från 80-talet

Good but not essential bad brains.

Only ever listened to "Pay to Cum", so it's fun listening to this because I can hear how it influenced other bands I like (Faith No More and Deftones, for sure). It's extremely unique, with some crazy vocals. I'm not a huge reggae guy, but I love the little splashes thrown on this record. Favorite tracks: "Secret 77", "Re-Ignition"

3.4 for I Against I - None of the songs really stood out, but it rocked and I liked the hard rock riffs and metal influences. Just overall a good listen.

Starts off really good and tapers quite a bit by the end.

Too short to be boring. Too long to be good. 3 stars.

Interesante. No diría que me encantó pero sí me pareció algo escuchable.

Tight, intense, urgent Black punk with threads of reggae, dub, metal, and weird experimentalism woven in. Gotta say, pretty ripping.

definitely not my fave punk

The songs are well arranged and performed well, especially for the punk genre. Is easily recognized as punk but even more discernible as having its own distinct style from other punk of its time. The Rastafarian disaffected youth, populism message is not to my taste, but it was definitely a unique take among a sea of disaffected youth punk from the era. There is plenty of cryptic to revisit and ponder. Well produced and performed, I can hear why this influenced so many artists, particularly genre smashing punks in the decades to come. I can also hear some of this influence appearing in Living Color's VIVID, three years later, as well as Mr. Bungle and Faith No More. I appreciate Earl Hudson's scaled back, but tight in the pocket approach to his drums on this album. A great of example of when less can be more. His drum parts are driving, but he's kept the drum arrangements open enough to allow the guitars and vocals enough space. I always appreciate they are not going for speed, but rather for tightness and funkiness. I also appreciate that Dr. Know doesn't get overly busy with his riffs. Just enough to keep it interesting, but not enough to distract. The album was better than I was expecting. The gag of recording from prison is a 12 year old's punk dream, but I would have preferred listening to "Sacred Love" straight up. Maybe I should listen to a live version somewhere and see how that sounds. Favorite: "She's Calling You"

Personally not my style. Very creative and unique with the fusion of hardcore and reggae elements. If you're a hardcore fan I could see this meaning a lot to you.

Its fine!

Thursday, 18 June, 2026 Side two is great. Dr. Know picks it up and delivers.

This is album is like a marshmallow. It’s fluffier and sweeter than I expected. But each song is unique - a rice krispie treat, campfire s'more, or plain. There’s a versatility that I appreciate.

I'm going to hand the mic to the master - Bob Cristgau - for this one... As a reggae band, they were a hardcore band with a change-up; as a metal band, they're a hardcore band with a great windup and no follow-through. The small problem is H.R.'s lyrics, which he's still smart enough to blur with the speed and attitude that make the lead and title cut their strongest song since "Pay to Cum." The big problem is Dr. Know, who's got a hundred Hendrix moves and no killer riffs... Ultimately - I blame the guitar sound and general production. I didn't notice it quite so much back in the day but I can't unhear it now.

Certainly not what I expected. Not bad.

Eh, wasn't as strong as their other one.

I know Bad Brains as hardcore punk and was not expecting the genre bending of this album. Henry metal is not my favorite, it lost me a little there. But a fun listen.

On tää silti ⭐️⭐️⭐️ vaikka muutama biisi olikin ihmeellistä huutoa.

I was ready to be done with the album after the first two tracks, since they sounded like the exact same metal-song to me. A metal song i, sadly, don‘t enjoy at all. Thankfully they switched it up for the rest of the album. I thought Re-Ignition and Section 77 are pretty interesting songs. They way they mix several influences into coherent tracks made for a challenging listening at first, but it clicked for me pretty quickly. She‘s Calling You is probably my favorite song on the album, it‘s ever-evolving nature really intrigues me and i like that it doesn‘t actually end in the bombastic chorus it seems to build-up to. Sacred Love is a great mood-piece and felt like the least-challenging song on the album. This is by no means i bad thing, it was simply the one song i could listen to and get completely lost in. Overall an interesting album that works really well in it‘s middle section, but loses me in the beginning and the end - the talk-sing vocals in Return To Heaven killed the song for me.

First time with a Bad Brains album. There's some excellent stuff in here and also some stuff that's pretty 80's and I just can't get into. The heavy stuff is great. The genre-ignoring wobble between punk and metal is great and, so long as they stick to heavy, all the parts work together. When you get to 'Sacred Love' and 'Hired Gun', things slow down and the incessant guitar modulation (I'm guessing it's a phaser and some kinda delay; there could be a chorus or something) takes the fore, which is terrible. Makes the lead guitar sound small -- which is a shame, because the lead playing is really good. There's a solid bass line throughout and you can tell from the big, round tone that they also play reggae. Drums are serviceable and even quite good in spots. I don't love HR's vocals all the time; he's a bit too loose with the timing. He's remarkably versatile, though, and it often *does* work for him. Definitely worth a listen. If you're into heavy music and/or punk (included? I think that's debated), you'll have bands you love who are influenced by these guys. The talent is obvious, the exploratory nature of their songwriting (or their disregard for genre) means they try stuff I don't love sometimes, but that's an acceptable trade-off for the interesting bits. The prominent elements of 80's production suck but they don't sink this one, unlike, say, a Todd Rundgren album (but he also sinks himself). 3/5 but definitely worth a listen.

Cool band, probably need to listen to this again

This album is very different than what I expected. It’s a mix of rock, metal and punk. From a listener perspective I found it interesting. First pass was with IEM’s , 2nd pass car stereo and impression didn’t change. I rate it a 2 1/2 stars. Middle of the road.

From Wikipedia: The vocals to "Sacred Love" were recorded over the phone from the prison where H.R. was serving time on a marijuana distribution charge. 100% Punk.

Parhaat: Re-Ignition, I Against I,

Two days after G. Love and Special Sauce, an album by guys who look like they'd make hardcore, I've got a hardcore album by guys who look like they'd make bluesy hip-hop. I'll be honest, it passed me by on two listens without making much of an impression but the guitar work is great throughout.

I’m happy that i’m being forced to listen to new albion’s and music. I live how short this album is bc you can really tell that all the songs are bangers. Currently 4/10 songs through the album and its so far has its a 4 star.

Solid blend of genres here. I need to get more into the D.C. hardcore scene.

From the cover I thought this would be a hiphop album, but it is a sort of punk-ish metal album. Anyways, it didn’t do much for me. It is a short album, but it still managed to bore me.

I think I was expecting something a bit more. It was okay, but I didn't love it.

Third punk rock album in a row... Whoa, what an interesting trip. Have never been a big punk rock fan, and this album sounds almost like an others..

Pretty neat rock sounding tunes maybe a little generic at times.

3.5 re-ignition is awesome

Хардкор с налётом фанка и треша.

Day865 - the title song “i against i” was the highlight. i was expecting more punk rock. this album sounds like mid eighties hair metal.

There’s some pretty sick guitar work here but that is all.

5 - AVERAGE

This is a band I knew to be important & influential in the scene. A little bit before my time tho. & I never made it backwards to check them out. Dig. Good times & i deem the reputation to be accurate & deserved. I’ll give ‘em three & a third

Ok. Didnt hate it but wouldnt listen again.

Okay, but what else?

Solid, but too much mid-tempo metal funk fusion here. Much prefer the ferocious hardcore of their debut

5/10 Best songs: Let Me Help Honestly, what you'd expect from a post-punk act: heavy guitars, bass, and drum; snarling vocals that are frequently so poorly enunciated that I didn't understand what the vocalist was saying; kind of poor production that definitely doesn't stand the test of time. That being said, it's not awful. I'm not a particularly big fan of punk to begin with, but this isn't too bad, so I left the album satisfied (more or less).

high intensity post punk, great collection of songs, cant really say there are too many weak points on this but at the same time it is lacking that punch and edge that i expect from punk records the vocalist has a good range but i dont think that plays in favor of this record, killer guitar solos tho

Disappointed with this. Really enjoyed it, definitely my kind of music. But when I read up on it, and saw the influences and apparent stylings, it felt lacking. I guess I just wanted and expected more. Will have to look into more of their stuff.

Very solid album, she's calling you is a standout

If you ask Len to describe his taste in women, he’d say ‘bad brains’ 2.7 5/10 Secret 77

decent album, some good tracks and interesting band

“I Against I” was good. Lyrics had a lot going on for short, fast songs. Enjoy the album but something about production seems off. Still, I cranked it loud and went with it.

not my favorite, but had some cool moments

I’ve heard select Bad Brains material over the years and I would say that I don’t think that this might be their best album. There’s a sort of new wave type of sound that’s infused throughout these tracks that doesn’t quite work here. It makes them sound restrained and the best stuff by them are when thay are wild and all over the place. This album is also missing some of their later great dub experiments. Hmm, yeah really not sure why this album was picked. Certainly any of their other albums would have been a better choice.

not as explosive as the self titled but a decent punk rock record

meh i okladka tez meh

2.5 rounded up

This is a real weird one for me. Bad brains self titled first album is on the mt. Rushmore of punk records but ive never really explored beyond it. And its not that it taints that record in any way but im not all that thrilled with what I found. Its so metal or hard rock. It just throws me for a loop. Where did the punk rock go? Or the reggae field that matter. I was so put off i went back to the first record to see if there was any through lines. And i never noticed it but there are. Not alot but enough to see this coming in retrospect at least. Now that I get it better I give it more respect but im still not crazy about it. That type of music isnt my favorite. I dont dislike it but punk is better for me. The only song I knew coming in was th title track and ive always like that one. But after a track or 2 its all the way to the stuff im not crazy about. So I get it and I understand it now but there just isnt much for me. I'll just put in the 1st record 1000 times over this one again.

Schmid. Though it was going to be ass at first but had a sincere come back

Rocks plenty hard.

album rock random

Sympa mais pas marquant

Cool drum sounds. Reminds me of the Urge. Wonder how much Steve Ewing listening to this band.

Punk as a very wide umbrella for a genre is really hit or miss for me. Even more so sub-genres like hardcore and post hardcore. I've always heard about Bad Brains and was curious about them but I've never really listened to them. Initially I was thinking that this is not the type of punk for me, and the fact that it's from the '80s and pretty much sounds like it is, gave me all the more reason to think I wouldn't really enjoy it. I can't say I loved it, but the fact that I listen to the whole thing without it really bothering me, even enjoying some of the tracks and guitar riffs, says a lot about this album. I think overall it's pretty good.

I against this album

I wanted to like it, but just not into it. Not terrible, just didn’t excite me.

I was wrong when I told you I was listening to this the other day. I was listening to the first Bad Brains album. What a step up from that this record is! The debut's mix of dub and hardcore felt like a cut'n'shunt, lacking the finessed blend of reggae and punk found in many a British post-punk band. But, while I Against I may never be elegant, there is real mastery over the gearstick; the dub bass and the metallic chugging feel natural together, the switches from thrashing hardcore to danceable new wave is well under control. When Billy Corgan says that Bad Brains was the only American punk band that he cared about, I understand what he means - those are genuine guitar solos, not one-note spatter patterns. However, having just listened to Bad Brains, the real revelation is H.R.'s voice, so much more expressive and dynamic. The lyrics might be political, religious, or conspiratorial - I'm not sure, I haven't taken them in yet - but he sings them with such a wide range of tics and traits. Oddly compelling. 3 This was a puzzler. Head thoroughly scratched and beard stroked almost to orderliness. Certainly there is an unexpectedly convincing stitching of disparate genres yet there is no sense of the exploitation of novelty in that aspect. I Against I does not seem to depend on it. I think there is a sustaining element however. There is an air of contradiction in many of these tracks - often when the singer intones the titles, but sometimes also in the bass or guitar riffs - a sense that the writers were convinced that this was an irresistible hook, bound to catch a listener’s attention when delivered just so, and simultaneously a sense that they just made this shit up on the spot. It’s strangely compelling without ever being pleasing. The result is a music that is never awful but always teetering on the brink - a high-wire act over an abyss where the wire is mere tolerability. Bad Brains: “How long do you think I can sustain that, your majesty?” Emperor Joseph II: “I have no idea.” Bad Brains: “Guess! Guess your majesty - Imagine the longest time such a thing could be sustained and then double it!” Emperor Joseph II: “Well…six..seven minutes. [Bad Brains gesture for bolder guesses] Emperor Joseph II: “8 minutes?” Bad Brains: “31 minutes! 31 minutes of continuously tolerable music - nothing definitively pleasant or unpleasant!” Well done Bad Brains. You have been touched by God. 2.5/5

Expected more of a punk screamy vibe but it’s way more melodic. Kind of dull but certainly listenable and not annoying.

Get in the pit! This was a fun listen.

Best Song: I Against I. I would have rated the whole album higher had the whole thing sounded like this. Punk needs a tempo like this. Worst Song: Sacred Love. Too slow, didn't like the muffled vocals. Overall: It was decently fun, although I really expected it to be punkier than it was. I think for this specific genre, I find it difficult to appreciate older music because it lacks some of the intensity and punchiness of the modern derivatives.

pretty cool

I want to like this more just because it's the Bad Brains

That was disappointing. I'd never really listened to Bad Brains but pretty much everything I'd read had me thinking of something different to this album. I get its importance in the evolution of hardcore so great but as I say my imagination had greater things in mind.

I appreciate the blend of genres and it worked better for me in some places than others. I can see some of the roots of nu-metal here, which isn't my favorite genre, which I don't think did it any favors.

Spoko album dla mnie.

Något som jag aldrig hört förut och som lät rätt bra, även om det inte lämnade något speciellt bestående intryck.

Okomplicerat bra.

I don't know much about this band but I think I might have seen them opening for Living Colour in Bristol in the 90s. Punk rock with elements of metal, reggae and funk. I wasn't holding out a lot of hope for this when it came up this morning, but it's not bad to be honest

This isn't hardcore, it's funk metal à la FNM and ST. It's ok but dated and carried by their name.

ok. points for being punk

Not my style

OK album, listenable, but not inspiring

Not really listened to Bad Brains before. A bunch of sounds I enjoy but no songs that grabbed me. Would listen more to their other work though.

I love Bad Brains, but this is where I start to stray a bit. Not as fast and ferocious as their earlier work, and a little too metallic for my tastes. I understand that was the style of the time, but I just want every song to be 1000mph. Still, some good moments on here.

I don't know how to feel about this album, really. It is not bad by any means, but I'd be lying if I said I'm blown away. There's no denying that these guys are seriously talented, especially the vocalist; however, I'm unsure whether I connect with this genre.

I had great expectations when this showed up, as I've heard very positive things about the debut album from them, which, surprisingly, is not in this list. I was anticipating to hear a fast and frenetic hardcore punk, and while the two first songs (not counting the intro) met my expectations, the rest didn't (except for "Let Me Help" which is also a hardcore punk). Once the album gets to the song "Re-Ignition", everything slows down, the riffs start to use a lot of palm muting, the rhythms embrace more accessible patterns and the vocals, while keeping a lot of the personality with its accent, focus more on being melodic rather than chaotic. My problem is not the album not being fast hardcore punk, it is that I think a lot of the ideas are not that interesting. There are some exceptions, like "Secret 77" sounding like a song taken from Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Juju" and "Hired Gun" having a very mysterious sounding chorus. However, in general, I wasn't very interested about this project, even though they are quite unique and some good moments.

Pretty good - will need to revisit for it to stick.

another genre that's not my style... thanks for serving it up though.

Not the Self-Titled uh? This was quite good, I Against I and House of Suffering are so awesome. I mean this started super strong didn't it? I Against I might be my favorite song by them! I should have listened to this a second time before giving it a stupid ranking really but no time, next one plzzzz!

Not really my thing, but it's not terrible and it's at least short.

Saved: I Against I, House of Suffering, Re-ignition, Return to Heaven

It's nice to hear divergence from the punk sound that Bad Brains fans might've expected at this point in their career. This is a shift (not a big one, mind you) towards something like thrash or hair metal. In terms of energy and mood, it's a little better than the majority of the punk genre. And bands that take left turns during their career, no matter how slight, get bonus points in my book. Apparently this change in sound made for quite the influential development in the music world back in the 80s. And credit where credit's due: on most tracks on I Against I, this new genre-conglomerate is pretty nifty. Exciting intro track. I love a good 1-minute electric guitar track that hypes you up for what's to come. Unfortunately for Bad Brains, the first half of their name seems to take precedence over the second half. The music is low-quality – and confidently so – to the point where snippets of decent melody are rays of light in a big misguided puddle of guitar-torture. For that reason, Re-Ignition is a significant highlight. The singer meanders between several melodies that just barely qualify as "musical", but coupled with the strong guitar and rock-solid rhythm section, the sound is relatively cohesive. The way he enunciates the song title ("ree-ing-nee-shAwn") is... interesting. An homage to the Police, maybe. Some of the songs here are noticeably weaker than the others. And the streaming numbers tell the full story. The final duo, Hired Gun / Return To Heaven, feels insubstantial, almost like the different instruments composed and recorded their parts separately from the others before mixing/production. The performances also sound sleepy and lifeless. The same thing roughly applies to Let Me Help, albeit to a lesser extent. 3/5 Key tracks: Intro, Re-Ignition, She's Calling You

Some tracks had me questioning my life choices, others had me fully vibing. I Against I is high-energy, genre-bending chaos that works best when you surrender to it. Three stars for the audacity and the grooves.

volela bih da je ceo album bio kao prve dve-tri pesme, hevi metal! ali nije bas. nema veze, svakako je dobar album, nista ludo, ali uzivala sam.

Never really liked punk music and this one is no different. It’s a lot groovier than most punk music however and has an undeniable hook in it. It’s pretty impressive that a group of black musicians from DC in the 80s transcended racial boundaries and created a sound like this.

Such a legacy from the original albums. Hard to sustain that quality. Still, a good album.

I expected something harder and a little more raw. Solid album still but I wanted PUNK

Great raw punk record.

I had always heard of Bad Brains as a punk band, and there are definitely a lot of punk elements here, but it's the kind that's actually *musical*, which I like. There's also a lot of variety in the music, which you don't always get in punk-influenced stuff. Not always crazy about the shouty vocals, but I like more of this album than I dislike. Favorites: "Re-Ignition" and "Secret '77"

Vanilla punk, not great, not terrible.

Some really amazing guitar over nonsense songwriting with a vocalist that feels out of Star Wars more than the 80s….

It was really good. Can see for its time that it was a forerunner of a lot of great music.

short and sweet but ultimately a bit forgettable

Está bien Es un genero que no escucho frecuentemente, pero se percibe que marcan la linea del punk fuerte, por ahí incluso rasgando otros géneros Se podría reescuchar

Never listened. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Good - One of the highlights here is the minute long intro. It's just some power chords but it brought my expectations up a bit. After listening to the rest of the album it's what I expected. Good, energetic punk album but there are far better out there.

This record will have you believe that Bad Brains is way more thrash than hardcore, but H.R. is still a vocalist/lyricist from that tradition, & Hudson's drumming style cultivates a speed that's punk-not-metal. B/c it vaunts a collection of tracks rather than a set of rawly exploding ideas that make up their debut, I Against I is a smoothed-over enterprise, which is not perforce a bad thing, but I do prefer their self-titled, one of the great albums of the 80s. 'I came down to make you overstand / That this gross sphere is not Jah land.' Spiritually, the Rastafarian tones are embedded not accented - indeed, here their statement is inherent whereas on the first it’s punctuated. I miss that initial energy, and honestly I'm 'let down,' but I can still 'get down.'

Slightly better produced and more stylistically diverse hardcore than their toweringly important and influencial debut. Is it an acquired taste? Yep. But it tastes pretty good, but not as good as their debut which isn't on here?... hold on, that metaphor is getting stretched a bit. You either like hardcore punk or you don't. If you like it you'll love this (but you already know that), if you don't like it, still give it a whirl, you may find out what you're missing out on. Best Tracks: I Against I; House of Suffering; Secret 77

Album 34 Top 3 favorites off the album: House of Suffering, Re-Ignition, Hired Gun I need to stop doing this at work, really, but the time after work isn't much of an option, so here we are. Another one I was a little apprehensive about reading reviews (another thing I need to stop doing). I'm still figuring out what *exactly* it is that I don't like about some albums that is my jam with others. This one is hard. Literally. It's in the genre name. Usually, albums that sound Like This are not my thing. But where I haven't enjoyed others, I enjoyed this one. Why? Beats me.

Trop rock mais ca va

Don't have this Bad Brains album. A lot to like here, but I do prefer the earlier albums. A more 80s and diverse sound, can sound kind of thin. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? Some ? Owned: No 47/186 (25%) Will I get: No

No Katate in the piy

Not what I was expecting, some good songs.

I like this, BB’s best album. When viewed against the hair metal / hair rock of the time of its release it stands out as being a bit different, a bit of a blend of metal/ rock/ funk/ hardcore with an 80’s production sheen. 3.4

I hadn't heard Bad Brains in quite some time. Didn't like it as much as I remember liking it. It was okay at best.

This was decent.

Much beloved punk album known for it's splashes into other genres including metal, funk, reggae, only about half the album is really punk at all. The talent and versatility of the musicians (especially vocalist H.R. and guitarist Dr. Know) make it all work as much as it does. This is, alas, one of those albums that I want to like more than I actually do. There are definitely some moments I enjoy ("Re-Ignition" is probably my favorite song, with it's combination of reggae singing, punk riffs, and a ripping metal solo), but not enough that tickle my brain in a special way. Still love these dudes in general, and I've seen them in concert a few times and really enjoyed myself.

Pretty decent hard rock, with a bit of a blend of genres. Neat that this inspired our friends in Rage Against The Machine and Sublime.

Never heard them. But this was pretty good!

Oh, hello Living Color. I see where you came from. Very metal. Might have been better to include something ealier.

The guitar and drums were cool, but I did not love the vocals.

Sounds experimental, the kind my wanna be edgy ex would tell me to listen

One of the most interesting albums I’ve heard on the list - early punk mixed with hard rock but has a bunch of not rock influence in it. It’s not to my taste one bit but the quality is there.

Was wel oké, paar liedjes waren goed

Eh. I like some Bad Brains, but this was way too polished. Fine, but needed more edge.

It grew on me a little bit towards the end. A bit too chaotic for me. Have a negative bias towards punk anyway – the instrumentals are a bit aggressive for my liking. That being said, I did listen to it on a Sunday with my morning coffee, and I did manage to listen to the whole thing!

Sympa mais pas mémorable 6.5/10 Chanson pref : Re-Ignition

3.4 Was ok. Felt like a cross between 80s hardcore and chuck-led faith no more. Just lacked some killer songs, it was all above average but never really reaching great levels. All for more black representation in metal though. Criminally under represented.

Normally hate the genre but this was pretty melodic and fun. Singing was a bit shit, mostly because of the poor recording quality

It’s cool that they brush up against hardcore punk and post punk in the same album. Not a lot for me to grab onto here, I didn’t come away with a favorite song. But I like the variability in the styles.

alright
