Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Had never heard this before, but really enjoyed it.

Not heard anything by this band previously. Entertaining with a gentle flow although parts sounded like something from a decade earlier.

That "Default" song annoyed the hell out of me when it was released, but the rest of this album is pretty interesting.

It was good, I think I would have enjoyed it if they amped up the psychedelia on this. It was solid I just feel like maybe they kept it a bit safe at times. It’s playful and I liked it, Default was great, Wor may be my favourite though with that siren followed by a garage rock style rollicking lick to follow. Overall really good stuff. 3.5 stars

Not particularly memorable, but pretty good light rock album.

Tja, ok? Ikke viktig ti år senere?

I don't know, I just can't get into this album or artist. Aussie beach boys have so much potential. Default got played all the time on my indie radio station in '12.

Pleasant psychodelia electronica with a sense of movement. Zumm Zumm is weird and infectious.

Pop-rock electrónico experimental. Ni fu ni fa.

Exceedingly boring even though it seems like it should be interesting. 5/10

Listened to these guys a lot in high school, so this was a great blast from the past for today. Love the reedy guitar, rhythmic focus, and actually good use of unusual rhythm elements from the dreary hay day of clap-stomp indie. Definitely frontloaded in terms of the energy and better tracks, but a fun album for a car ride or other casual listening.

Art rock - meh

It started out hopeful, but I kinda got bored after a few songs. It's definitely an interesting sound though. I wish the songs had more aim. My favourite song was Hail Bop.

Has it's moments. It's interesting but not enough to keep me interested for the whole album.

That was kinda cool. Clearly a lot going on in the song arrangement and vocal harmonies. My 7 year-old loves the album, which is a compliment with his good taste in music. Pleasant to listen to overall, but I probably won't come back much. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding

Perfectly adequate music

Never heard of this group and it was definitely a pleasant listening experience.

7/10 interesting first half

Understand why this was acclaimed at time. Interesting sounds and nice to listen to. However, no compelling songs at the heart of the soundscape.

Musically, I don't really have a problem with this, but I'm mostly not feeling it. I'm usually pretty tolerant of most music, but this I just found to be unfocused and mildly annoying. Coming back the next day, it improved somewhat, but I'm unlikely to revisit this. Fave Songs: Life's a Beach, Skies Over Cairo, Storm, WOR, Hand of Man

Remember this when it came out. Good, lightweight fun.

try not to make 13 songs that sound virtually identical challenge IMPOSSIBLE

I had high hopes for this one. Default was a banger 15 years ago. Unfortunately every song sounds like the one before it. And the Hamm Hamm song? Didn’t last more than. 45 seconds. 2/5

Day905 - this was just the right amount of electronic to make this a decent album

If this record wasn't 15 years old I would think it was AI generated. It has no human feeling to it at all. It sounds synthetic front to back. Even the vocals sound like they have been generated by an algorithm. It kind of just drones on the whole time. And I swear there's like an undertone or something that is constantly present under the entirety of each song. I don't think this one was for me. I've heard worse albums but this is not something I would recommend or ever listen to again. 2.25/5

*2012. British art rock. *Too electronic for me (Kraftwerk-y). *I skimmed through this album. It's not for me, although I don't hate it either. RATING - 5/10

First few songs I thought it was electronica that was both musically rooted and also inventive, but then it became repetitive and a little dull. I might've preferred it as instrumental music, because the singing was melodically and lyrically pretty dull, without dynamics. 2.5/5.

I'm not in the mood for weird stuff like this today. Maybe another day I would have been more willing to figure this out, but I doubt even then if it would do anything for me. The choices they make about the repetitive clicks and annoying phasing reverb just gives me a headache.

Feels kinda lifeless. There's a lot of ideas here (mostly Animal Collective copyings) but for some reason it just comes across so bland and unmoving.

Too bland yet simultaneously too all-over-the-place for my liking. The sort of "Lazy Sunday" sounding indie music that's way too monotonous for its own good, melodically especially, but also in the very empty feel of the production. Will point out some alright moments here that I still enjoyed. 'Zumm Zumm' had a nice slick synth loop that captured the psychadelic feel the album was clearly going for, and the tribal nature of the rhythm section here gave early Eno and Talking Heads vibes. I enjoyed the popped bass groove on 'Love's Dart', again, a pretty solid core groove here. 'Wor' was a much-needed change of pace after all the slower songs here, a really solid twangy lead on this one. And the sinister synth breakdown on 'Life's a Beach' was also another standout moment. So yeah, some interesting riffs and moments sprinkled throughout, but I can't think of a single song here that I'd willingly revisit in its entirety. An album of little cool moments as opposed to solid songs.

I have very little to say about this. It's performed well, recorded well, sounds nice enough. There's just no real substance to it. I forget the songs as I'm listening to them. Very little variety, quite chill, some interesting sonic ideas. Monotonous vocals. Yeah this is certainly an album that exists. Bland and inconsequential yet pleasant enough. Gets old halfway through. Very repetetive, and what it repeats isn't that interesting.

Interesting in parts, but not compelling. Often twee, and borrowing many themes from other bands and earlier eras, without making it new. Sounds like a couple of guys in their parents’ basement having a good time, thinking they’re more clever than they are.

Largely uninteresting, unfortunately.

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

I’m not sure what this is. The monotone singing was definitely a choice.

just not catchy at all

Very boring. 2.5 stars

What’s this? I’m seeing double! Four Django’s. I’ve been quadruple Django’d! Make sure you or your film don’t get Django Django’d (where they intersperse the final cut of your film with audio clips and soundwave images of Django Django). You can delete this Django Django nonsense and give me some Django Django Reinhardt Reinhardt instead.

For some reason, this is just not working for me. I think it might be the kind of record that rewards repeated listening, but on first pass, I am not really invested enough to put forth that effort.

Started off as a 3 and worked its way down to a 2 with its repetitive songs without much energy

Better than a lot of the newer albums on the list, but still falls prey to one of the biggest issues I have with newer bands - though this is a full band, if the bassist and/or guitarist were to not show up for a gig, it would make literally no difference in the sound of many of their songs. Didn't hate the listen. Wouldn't listen again.

It attempts a quirky, psychedelic art pop sound, but it ultimately feels like a superficial, modern imitation of far superior 60s and 70s pioneers. There is no real progression here, just a retread of old ideas.

Nice production, interesting ideas, however, it's a bit messy and unfocused. A bit bloated. Nice soundtrack for a roadtrip in Sedona or getting high with your friends. Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the artistry.

Bad bad.

They took all of the standard alert sounds from an iPhone and made an album with them. It’s not as bad as it should be, but I didn’t enjoy it.

another project i was simply not in the mood to hear. 2.5--i was bored and annoyed the whole time

On their debut album Django Django takes the weirdness of the Beach Boys' *Pet Sounds* and pushes it a *hair* further, but certainly not far enough to avoid sounding like a copyist. (Could be worse though, at least they're not taking their inspiration from Three Dog Night or Grand Funk Railroad.) The multitracked vocals are also a real distraction - I'm not saying this is an attempt to cover up the fact that they don't have anyone strong enough to be the lead vocalist, but I guess we'll never know (since they ain't letting go of that idea, ar least not on this record).

Not bad, but not particularly interesting, or exciting, or… good either. Very much a “why is this here” entry on the list.

Boring music that I didn't like

Overall: 4/10 Fine music, but nothing really stood out as memorable. It went in one ear and out the other. Fav Song: Love's Dart

I like the Super Furry or Beta Band vibes and listened to this a bit when it came out. It's still decent. Oddly, I can't really remember it that well and on playback only the 'hits' spark any memory, which probably speaks volumes of the albums staying power.

Отсылка сразу и к кино, и к программированию What is this, a cross-over episode?

Камбуча тайп оф мьюзик. Пока слушал потерял те незначительные остатки тестостерона, которые у меня были

Чет прям душно

I got some 80s/ 90s vibe from this. Like I imagine this is what Pet Shop Boys would sound like if they would sample more guitar sounds. It sounds eclectic with the guitar and other electronica. It just didn't click for me. Listened to only half the album.

Mildly interesting with some electronic / psychedelic bits. Not really for me though

I thought this was quite good, ridiculously derivative but listenable enough although I wasn’t that disappointed when it ended as it were. Towards the bottom of the two stars but two stars nonetheless not least for “Life’s A Beach”. Tom.

Pleasant but it's a tease. There are a bunch unique sounds they start the songs with, only to abandon them after the intro and perform something more poppy. Not very experimental or brave or notable for art rock at the time it came out.

Watered down Neo-Psych, do yourself a favor and listen to Animal Collective instead. 4/10

On paper this should be the kind of thing I like, but I think I’ve moved on from this sort of thing. I liked a couple tracks, but without a clear nostalgic link, I don’t think I’ll be coming back.

don't really know what to make of this. I was never hugely keen on psychadelic rock but I suppose this was worth a listen. I had never even heard of Jango Jango

Shoulda stuck as an instrumental band.

I appreciate that Django Django have a very unique sound but this isn't an album I could listen to regularly.

Yeah no thank you

If you somehow plugged a Beach Boys cassette into a ColecoVision video game system, and then lightning struck - like in Weird Science - instead of Kelly LeBrock and a Ferrari Mondial, you’d get a lady that looks like Mrs Doubtfire and this album.

Very early 2010s sounding album, a time when Hot Chip was swag and YOLO was everywhere. This quirky electronic pop sadly felt quite bland to me, it just felt too polish and lacked any real great hook. I only knew “Default” from earlier and none of the other songs really stood out. Not bad but I just had a hard time to get excited for any particular song. Strong 2.

ahhh. Another discount album, that I am no better in anyway for listening to. All over the place. Starts out dances then goes... semi rock.. then beach blanket...?

Not in a great mood today and this absolutely didn't help. I can't see really why this is differentiated from any of the other 100's of albums that came out in 2012.

Nothing that stuck with me or was very exciting.

Boring, to me

I hope that Major Payne leads a platoon to take out the recording studio where this was recorded

To me, this was like Animal Collective lite.

Hipster act from the 2000's. Couple of good tracks 'default' in particular but it's a bit one dimensional over the full length to sustain interest.

I'll keep it short cause I have nearly nothing to say on this one. I kinda like the beach boys like voval harmonies. And other than that this was the most boring record ove ever heard. It doesnt even deserve another word.

Started interestingly then went dull quickly.

Probably pretty decent for electronica... but I'm not a fan.

The clue is in the name here but I always thought that this lot were an African new world music combo rather than a set of Scots lads. Which proves that I only took a fleeting notice of them. So fair does again to this list for educating me and introducing me to something new. I enjoyed the album to a point but quickly tired of it. Described as Art Rock but think that is a bit of a stretch. I associate Art Rock more with Prog Rock which is my favourite genre and this album is nowhere near that. Maybe subsequent albums move more towards this but don’t think I’m motivated enough from this album to do that. 2/5 11/3/26

Bland. 2.5

“Need” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. A phenomenal computer/electronics musician or two and pretty alright song writing around it. Not for meeeee. Perhaps a more upbeat and boring alt j.

Not my thing

Is it just me, or does it seem like this list has a disproportionate number of British Indie Rock albums from right around 2012? That's what I thought. And doesn't also seem like most of those albums are pretty dull? Yep. I'll toss a quarter star over for the (far more interesting) song I created in my hear when listening to this album and my TV screen said: DJANGO DJANGO DJANGO DJANGO ZUMM ZUMM It's a banger.

The album ended and looped back to the beginning. I didn't realize this until I was halfway through the second listen because everything sounds exactly the same!

2.5 - decent album

I saw someone else's review include the line "It's like if The Postal Service made an acid pop record." as a positive. I share the same sentiment, but as a negative.

Self titled debut album made in 2012. British art rock band. Sounds like soundtrack music to a TV show. And the TV show is about driving myself insane, repeating cycles of mediocrity, trying to make it somehow hilarious. A type of hell.

Honestamente entre esse álbum e qualquer coisa lançado pelo Animal Collective prefiro o segundo.

Seems promising but nope not for me

I mean I didn't hate it. Sounds Supergrassy at times. It's ok but don't think I'll ever revisit this album.

Like Gary Numan fronting the Beta Band, missing the good parts of either. I liked bits of the songs but unfortunately they were surrounded by endless stretches of those same bits. Probably good treadmill music but I'm not sure I'd be into this otherwise.

gave me summery vibes with friends

I liked about half of this.

Indie game music from 2012. The vocals feel like they're only here to make tracks longer - I bet I prefer the 19-minute instrumental version of the album.

Wish this were a bit more interesting! It has good tracks but doesn’t really feel “essential”

Instrumentals were okay (though not really my jam), but the vocalist was SO annoying

Meh…

The moment this started I knew this was going to be some white people shit, and it absolutely was. This is that pretentious indie art stuff that I can’t stand because it tries to be so deep and act like it’s telling some message, but it’s really just bad. I think I would have much preferred this if it was just music because there were some good beats and rhythms, but the vocals ruined it every time. Not unlistenable, but not good either.

Found it very irritating

Was not unbearable, some good grooves. They need to drop the Sound Effects, very distracting.

Some good dance beats, but repetitive lyrics and somewhat uninspiring vocals. 2/5

This is fine as background music but often repetitive and with no memorable hooks.

There is a sameness which does not necessarily mean blandness to this album. The best songs seem like they were made to be themes or scores from a movie while the less interesting songs more or less run together for me. This is not awful, but it is very middle of the road.

Granted that there's often ridiculous hype around some of these acts / albums when they come through (think The Klaxons) but I do think this author made some howlers when choosing contemporary / new albums for inclusion in the book. This is a case in point. All style and very little substance, representing everything I knew I never needed in music, frontier dance rock.

Yeah, this one isn't working for me, dawg. Once in a while, I can get behind psychedelic music if it meshes well with another genre (Candy Claws mixing it with shoegaze for their album Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time is great). But mixing it with 2010's indie rock only ends up reinforcing the janglyness and thinness of the 60's psychedelic rock they're channeling. Honestly, some of this wouldn't be out of place in the 60's, such as the song Waveform. And for me that's not a good thing.

This album was notable to me only for its blandness, and for presenting several tracks with promising intros that failed to deliver anything but a sense of annoyance and anticlimax. I didn't really enjoy listening to it very much.

Not sure I get this one

1st listen: not good, everything is the same I didn't noticed I listened to 5 songs instead of 2. Nothing rememberable, only "Silver Rays" is somewhat good. Songs are pretty boring. 2nd listen: Nothing changed that much, still pretty boring. The beat of every song is just repeating and everything is so same my head hurt. And what the fuck is going on in "Zumm Zumm" ? Anyway, I realized "Silver Rays" isn't my vibe. Only song I would point out is "Hail Bop" idk why. Overall pretty boring and repeatative. Deffinitely not my vibe. Even tho some songs could go into a summer playlist, I didn't like it. Won't listen again.

Track 1 hits like a crap 80s computer game soundtrack. Hail Bop is a slight improvement, but is so lightweight it just breezes past. Default has some quality moments and at least grabs your attention, but still too much bleeps and sci fi for me. Firewater is a lit more enjoyable if a little too long. The rest of the album follows a similar style and is therefore ok if not exciting

This was… odd. I’ve heard much worse, but it also just wasn’t good? Probably a 1.5*, but not as bad as the 1* albums I’ve heard.

This is #day509 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… how about some super-weird psychedelic pop shit from the 2010s? I have no idea why I'd need to hear this before I die. I felt relieved when it was finally over. This is a low 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day510.

Mostly inoffensive, but it all blends together and can be irritating at times. Not anything I'm excited to revisit at all.

Life's a Beach was okay. The rest was kind of discordant and blah.

Dersom dette er fremtiden for gitar-rock kan vi likegodt legge ned. I beste fall en fattigmannsutgave av Belle& Sebastian.

Expect this album to be dropped in the next edition of the books. It’s not bad but so many albums that sound just like this between 2008-2013 and I can think of a few more deserving of a place.

- muito inspirado no surf rock, Beatles e artistas mais recentes de música eletrônica. - gostei mais do começo do álbum, mas no geral senti falta de ideias mais elaboradas.

2/5 slightly better than depeche mode after weed

Sounded like Beach Boys in space

2.0 - weird. Lots of electronic shit…but vocals / harmonies sounds like Beach Boys

Wavelength goes, suspect this would reward repeat listens but not enough for me to actually do it.

Never heard of this band prior to this, so was keen to hear something I hadn’t previously. Didn’t really connect with it. Some nice instrumentation couple with annoying vocals. Nothing really spectacular here.

These guys do a great job at making music, but fall just short of creating something with impact. "Default", "Firewater", and frankly most songs here sound like they're made for Amazon commercials. Hints of character, offensively inoffensive, and technically well-produced. I've gotta be a bit harsh on this album's inclusion, this is not very important music, especially for the time it came out. the EDM boom was happening, rap was being taken in some wildly interesting directions. At least stomp-clap had a sound and aesthetic!! Then there's this milquetoast project. The music is a 3/5, but it taking up a space on here is 2/5 material. Not worth your while

I like this sound but then some there tracks are a bit nauseating.

I don’t really get why this is on the list

2 bonnes chansons, tout le reste était terrible.

Default is a cool song

Let me get this straight, there's one neo-psych album from 2012 on this list and it's *not* Lonerism? It's just a bunch of British guys? Come on now, I don't even *like* Tame Impala that much, but they're clearly the most important indie band of the 2010s, if not the entire 21st century! On the other hand, this is totally bland indie-by-numbers, with the cover being the most interesting thing about it.

Replacement level Animal Collective style music. Not unpleasant but not something I’d return to.

Rätt tråkig platta som blandar inspiration från Beatles och Pink Floyd men med ett mer rent och kliniskt sound i och med att det är modernt. Några spännande ljud men utöver det väldigt oinspirerande.

electr., Rock, 2012 -> 2

I found this first time round and it was fine but didnt stand out, i may even have seen them live but i cant remember, which probably tells you enough. This was fine and i enjoyed it but doesn't exactly represent the cutting edge of music.

Never heard of them. Not bad, but not interesting.

I had not previously considered if I could build a continuum between Animal Collective and Fleet Foxes, but this album would really set a midpoint.

this is some solid 10's alt rock, and the song construction is often dynamite but two really annoying voices doing harmonies like that really drags it down. default is still a bop even though it might be the one where they're most annoying

I enjoyed "Skies Over Cairo" but that mostly made me think that I wish there was more ~Arab type music in this project. I'd trade this album for something cool and from that general region and history.

Default aside, this is pretty forgettable.

# 595 : Django Django Django Django – Indie Rock for the Algorithmically Inclined This is an alright record—kind of psychedelic, kind of poppy—but it suffers from a serious lack of realistic energy. Everything sounds so perfectly quantized, so surgically aligned in a DAW, it’s like a computer wrote it while sipping oat milk. The result? Lifeless. Devoid of personality. Like indie rock made by a spreadsheet. The songs are catchy, sure, and there’s charm in the repetition. But after 40 minutes of falsetto harmonies and looped grooves, it starts to feel like you’re stuck in a stylish elevator. Excellent electronic composure, but the vocals never take any risks, and nothing truly grabs your attention. Best Track (if you must): Zumm Zumm – the sonic equivalent of a quirky Instagram filter: fun for a second, then forgotten. Verdict: ★★ for polish. File under “indie rock groups white girls like,” but as far as that goes… really not bad.

Another strange selection. Didn't hate it, enjoyed moments but became a bit annoying

This was actually more enjoyable that I thought when I heard more electronic music in the first track. At least it wasn’t depressing. Still don’t really like it much so it gets a 2.

Some appeal as music you listen to while doing something else, but not for me

Has it's moments, but I find this sort of electro-indie-pop tedious. Also hate the band name. And most of the song titles. And the album art.

you lost me at 'art rock'

enkele goeie nummers... maar vooral veel doorslagjes.. dit kan beter, jongens!

If you like repetitious pseudo-yacht rock, you will love this album

Absolutely fine, polished and inoffensive, but I've listened twice now and can't remember a thing about it. Totally forgettable. 2.5 stars.

Bliver helt anspændt når jeg ser at dagens plade er "UK indie pop". Det var ok.

I listened to it yesterday and - while I didn't mind it at the time - I've already forgotten it. That must mean something, right?

I hadn't heard about this band at all ahead of time, which was strange, but I now realise that I really didn't miss anything. It's really not very good, and it's very obviously not rock either. It's a sort of tedious, weak and wafty indie album. It's not so much bad, it's more like this kind of music just really rubs me the wrong way. There's such little substance to this. It's like a silent fart wafting gently across a room, only in music form.

Pretty forgettable

Tem ótimas ideias, mas acho que falta uma coisa mais bem trabalhada, só não pegou msm

dunno why this is here

It was... interesting. Not my favourite, and a lot of the same. Given that, I will say maybe a 2 - 2.5 - I will call it a 2.

not great

Love the variety of sounds

Irritating. 1.84

I was in a such a bad mood while listening that I fully couldn't process it. I'll check out art rock another time. 2 star

This is so repetitive!!!

Occasionally there was a fun sequence. But too often it sounded like an 8-bit video game caught in a blender. 2.5/5

Another reviewer commented that there is a clearly gifted producer in or around the band, but it's a shame that there's no songwriter. It's not unpleasant, but it's also not really enjoyable.

hm its ok but I don't like it Will I listen to again: 1%

did anyone care about this did the band even care about making it if I needed to have something that sounds like nothing on this might be acceptable I guess

It’s probably just because I was aging out of being cool around 2009-2012, but I just have no time at all for the rock music of that time. This sounded like a boring version of a good band from a few years earlier. Music was better in 2008, which has nothing to do with myself being about 20 at the time.

This a fake album i stg. There smth about it idk how to explain it. Cool ig. Its doing everything and nothing at the same time. Feels like the beatles if they were millelinials and liked going to overpriced coffee shops in gentrified neighborhoods.

Couldn't do it. I was so disinterested in what this album was doing, I couldn't make it through.

Было что-то необычное в этой музыке, но по большей части ничего хорошего

Fun 🤷‍♂️

Haven't heard of the band which I find surprising. Well, the albums started a bit interesting but very quickly turned into your average indie shit 2/5

It was okay to have this on in the background while I did other things. While I didn't mind the general vibe, I found it to be musically lacking when I listened more closely. Meh.

1001 albums to hear before you die? Why would this be here? What would I have missed out on exactly? Some generic 2010s indie. I think I could have died without hearing this and died as a content man. Who are these guys? They ought to thank whatever deity they worship that the film Django happened to come out the same year which I assume led to some accidental listens of this album. There will be much much worse albums, but j can't imagine one with less impact. I had Thriller yesterday. Thriller. Michael Jackson. Now, you may think that I absolutely hate this album, in fact it's so ordinary to me and I assume will be about number 600 in the list when all is said and done. It is OK.

Not quite sure what the attraction is here. I guess some people must like what these guys are doing, but it all seems very generic and forgettable to me.

When listening to older albums from the 60s and 70s, one of the key markers of a high-rated album is whether it has stood the test of time. With newer albums such as this, the inverse is applied by determining whether the album has built upon the work of the past and improved on it with all of the advancements. This was certainly not the case for Django Django, which aside from trippy-ish instrumentals and editing didn't really shine in any area and ended up being mostly a disappointing listen even if there were no songs necessarily that were atrocious. This will be given a 2.5/5 which is bumped to a 2.

Not sure how this one made it on the list of albums to listen to before you die. It felt like a really conceptual album. The first couple of tracks started off okay but I lost interest by track 4/5.

Not for me.

Not interesting, nothing special.

First time listen and I thought it was fine. Nothing spectacular, nothing terrible. Just fine, if occasionally annoying. Wouldn’t listen again though. The 21st Century psychedelia feels a bit like a modern age Pet Sounds. It is essentially fairly harmless background noise.

Saw "art rock" and prepared myself for some pretentious bullshit. The 2 instrumentals aren't bad, but the rest sounds like commercial jingles.

zwei bis drei

Very middling.

This just isn't good. Mostly electronica with some bad vocals and everything sounds the same. Pretty lame. 4/10.

I’m not sure what this was, but it sure as hell wasn’t music.

I'm not sure what this album was supposed to be, but it wasn't really that enjoyable. The vocals were whiny and annoying the entire time and to be honest I don't even remember the back half of the album it was so forgettable.

Not bad but not memorable

This album just really didn't hit. Mostly boring, with hints of listen-ability, back to boring. Couldn't latch on to any one song in particular.

kinda boring

not really an album i would say you absolutely have to hear before you die

It’s okay. Not really my jam. I don’t suspect I will put this on again

I like the album cover but nothing else of it pretty much. Maybe the only songs from Fifa and gta v that I don’t love. Would be turning to the Spanish radio station if I was driving around los santos and this came on I can tell you that. Fav song - Hail bop Least fav - fire water Specific rating - 2.5

When I first listened to this and read the description I thought: Oh yeah, a good update for some art rock! But then the groovy melodies turned out to be more of the same and relied too much on some drum programming which is just... bad when you want to be a rock band. Some tracks like this? Sure. But while "Firewater" is great, more of the same just sounds boring. Nah.

Inoffensive and completely forgettable django pop.

Some ok moments

I know Waveforms from GTA, but the rest of the album is decent. Nothing outstanding, but not terrible. Middle of the road, 2.25 out of 5.

Once again, the dude from the 1001 book just looked at whatever got nomitated for a Mercury Prize and took some album that everyone forgot about 20 minutes after it got released. Making this challenge juste made me realize how little consideration - and knowledge - went into the entries of this book.

This album feels so rich, but yet so bland at the same time.

A fun and pleasant listen that doesn't go beyond that. It really sounds like most of the indie bands from 2012.

This album was just alright. It didn’t have any stand out songs. I listened to this three times while driving and nothing grabbed me. It seemed like the vocals were kind of an afterthought to the songs. And i find the synth distracting. 2.5

Kind of weird, but enjoyable.

It's quite easy to evaluate this album. It's possible to see a lot of potential never accomplishes by them. Since it's a debut, I'll maybe check their later releases to see if they indeed had any improvement.

The music was very interesting but unfortunately the voice and lyrics didn’t do much for me. It isn’t bad just a little mediocre and predictable with the odd flourish of interesting musicality.

never really gripped me

Unremarkable

Pretty boring

Apparently there are two songs on here that were included in GTA V and I don’t recognise either of them. I’m really at odds with how compelling I really find this album, sure there are many aspects that feel fresh and enjoyable (I enjoyed the opener and quite a few songs towards the middle) but there is also something very bland and formulaic to them as well. For me I feel it’s the vocalist, only feels comfortable singing in a very limited vocal range (it’s a weird distinction from not having extra range but one I feel the need to make)

I would say it didn't exactly blow my hair back, but I don't have any.

Kind of bland but not bad. Nothing here grabbed me enough to want to hear it again. Better than a 2 but not a 3. 2.5/5

This is now the most recent album I've had here that I've never heard of. I love art rock, but this album was a little too on the psychedelic side for me.

Millennial Beach Boys. Meh.

No son malos, es un indie medio electrónico que suena bien, pero no te deja nada la verdad.

The Beach Boys are back.

Imaginative and bright, but a little too psychedelic for my taste. I feel there was too much complexity to really enjoy.

Interesting

sounds like video game music (derogatory)

No. I don't know why but the word pretentious kept popping up as I listened to this album. It's probably not as bad as that, or as I might make it out to be, but I was ready to move on after only a few songs. I stuck it out, but with the exception of Firewater (faux clapping kind of hooked me) and WOR (loved the first 90s of pseudo-country sounding guitar), I didn't really enjoy find anything I cared about.

This is the soundtrack to a car advert. Absolute landfill crap. So inessential.

An underwhelming listen. I had high hopes, but most of the tracks were just the same group harmonies and meh instrumentals. Not horrible but not needed on this list. 2.4/5->2/5

Indifferent

It must be difficult to invent something new nowadays- this isn't bad but then again it's been done before and I'm tired of being charitable.

Couple nice sounds and rhythms on here, but most of it is just 'meh. And it suffers a bit of techno influence.

Not a 1001 list

Good, not great, i enjoyed everything generally, but i just didnt enjoy the vocals, i thought the instrumentals were so engaging and interesting.. but i didnt think the singer fit the vibe just right.

If the Beach Boys grew ironic hipster mustaches and took themselves way too seriously.

Really bizarre inclusion consider the fact that even at the time this released they were considered a one hit wonder, and that fact hasn't changed at all in the intervening years. Default is a bop and a half though I won't lie.

Booorrrriinnggg Another review had it spot on.. it’s all music and no songs

Этого Джанго освободили поздновато

Not for me

Repetitive without much to hook you in.

Psychedelic electronic alt pop rock. Nothing I’d listen to intentionally. Not my vibe.

It started off ok and I thought I was going to like it, but after a couple of songs I couldn't really take anymore

No points for guessing that the special niche being filled here is "albums to listen to when stoned". Patterns and echos and synth attempts at ear candy. Its as interesting as it is silly. So many albums could fit. But if seeking purity, this album would ONLY serve this purpose. hmmm. I can think of a 2nd purpose for the album. Make sober tweakers listen to it, so they know how dumb people sound when they are off their faces. Surely there is better music that THIS for THAT?

Django Django? Sorry, I found this boring boring.

I was not overly impressed with this.

Middle of the road, one or two songs half decent the rest I couldn't listen to, mind numbing mediocrity

Moderately interesting at times and pleasant enough, but borderline forgettable.

It’s music. It’s not annoying.

This album is less than the sum of its parts. I found myself enjoying some of the vocals, some of the beats and some of the rhythm, but when put together I found it repetitive and even irritating. I was genuinely in a bad mood by the time the album finished.

The worst of early teens indie sleaze without what made genre standouts good. It actively irritated me.

Very pedestrian. Saw them in concert once. They failed to excite.

Never like that Default song when it was out.

British art rock band - WTF?

Oh gosh no. Soz.

Sounds like the patricks I just don‘t think it should be on this list

Chill summer vibes 2.5

Like a poppier, lighter New Order. Insubstantial.

Dont understand the project of this album. It just goes.

How many random English rock/pop bands can they put in this thing.

Django Django is a bit too twee and dreamy for my tastes. It has a nice and comforting momentum underpinning the dreaminess, but ultimately it's music I can't do anything with and doesn't invoke any feelings in me. A high 2.

Yeah, this was a bit passive for me too, nice dreamlike sounds which never quite got as far as being psychedelic. I prefer psychedelia with a bit more oomph in the most part - this doesn't have that and doesn't really have anything else to hold my interest for too long. Another 2/5.

I found this quite annoying tbh. I can see why people like it but definitely not my thing.

pleasantly surprised by this album, never heard of this group before and it had some bops.

non sono proprio riuscita a connettere con questo album e ciò mi strugge perchè penso di essermi persa qualche informazione fondamentale, ma stando così le cose non posso dare più di due stelle :(

I torn on this rating. I usually give 4 stars for albums that I like and want to revisit, but I usually give 2 stars to albums that I don't think merit inclusion on this list. The music is good, and reminds me of earlier efforts from Hot Chip and other mid-to-late 2000s bands, but is it ground breaking? Does it say anything particularly interesting? Did it end up inspiring other bands? What impact has this minor indie album from 2012, which was nominated but did not win the Mercury Prize, had on music broadly? Maybe I'm just harsher on albums from the past 10-20 years that get included on this list, but I don't see this as being particularly exceptional even if I liked the music.

feels like trying being psicodelic but with no substance. Try alot of stuff but don't hit anything with that.

Super danceable and fun but…hollow? The thing is I didn’t totally feel what they were throwing at me most of the time aside from a couple tracks … it’s possible my producer / composer ear is addicted to singles and “fresh / new” right now. I get the good feelings a bit and then it disappears as the song progress. It’s also very rainy today so that plays into the listening experience.

There are few neat moments on here, but I can't help but feel like this is just a mood board of stuff the band likes. Like just a collage of influences VS something cohesive and unique. A few notches above a cover band.

I think it was interesting, but I don't think I'll listen to it again 2.5

I've already forgotten all about this album after less than 24 hours. That probably speaks volumes.

This was pretty meh

Booooring....

I've never heard of Django Django before now. Seemingly indie darlings upon their debut, Django Django seems to have fallen out of favor over the past decade. I can see why though, as much of their music seems to only appeal to a certain niche of people who would've like the beach boys if they were more "modern". While certainly unique, much of Django Django feels as though it isn't fully fleshed out. It's an odd thing to have such unique songwriting and instrumentation for your songs and yet have them sound so utterly flat. So much about this album sounds weak, it's like it has asthma. The only time it really piqued my interest was with the penultimate song Skies Over Cairo, which blends Arabian melodies with indie rock rhythms. I often feel like Django Django never quite reaches their full potential at any given point, which is disappointing considering how talented this band is.

Pretty forgettable.

This feels like a dark horse outsider pick. If that is not the case and this really was one of the best albums of the 2010s, I'm not sure I missed out on much by not going deep on new music from this decade.

It wasn’t terrible but I just wasn’t into it.......at all. 2*

Background music on podcasts.

This is not good. It is Indie techno. It is bad. Don't listen. Rounding up but I not sure I should.

Sure was some noises

2.5 Decent but a bit of a slog

Cannot believe this shit is on this list but Liquid Liquid isn't. This album would not exist without Liquid Liquid, even their names are eerily the same. This is a generic, car commercial, commercial landfill indie homage to no wave. It's fine but it's ridiculous and says a lot about the listmakers' lack of knowledge that this album made it, but the legendary band it is blalantly ripping off didn't.

A decent inoffensive indie album. Gets a bit weird and is overall a bit too electronic-based for my liking but wasn't bad.

listened to the whole album but it never interested me

Art Rock, interesting… Musical.ly a three, vocally oh one… Not much more to say. … I kept wondering what this album would’ve been like with Paul Simon or Van Morrison or. Billie Joe Armstrong. …

Well, I will say that at least this band sounds fairly original, and there is decent diversity of sound throughout this album, but really trying to understand where all of the 4’s & 5’s that people have given it are coming from… Thought I was going to enjoy it more than I did after the start, and while it did not suck – it was just kinda there for me… Went back and listened to a handful of tunes a 2nd time through just to see if I was missing something – but nope, and am really perplexed as to why folks seem to rave about “Default” – as that is one of my least favorite tracks on the album… The 2 best tracks in my opinion are “Hand Of Man” & “Firewater” – though the former is considerably better… Definitely better than a 1 for sure just on originality of the sound, but can’t give it more than a 2 as it just did not gain any traction with me…

Meh. Mildly interesting but kind of annoying. Nothing new here. Feels custom-tailored for any mid-2010s, tent-stomping festival set. Alt J is probably up next followed by RHCP, or some other headlining legacy act.

Gave this several spins to confirm that my original instinct were right: meh. The influences that they are drawing from are all way more interesting and less dull than this. Not a good sign. Their vision of this album is kind of cool, and I appreciate the commitment to the sonic concept they’ve got going, but I think they really wanted to make this music both vocal and also danceable, and those two things just aren’t working together here. The vocals feel kind of badly delivered, a little dull, and the lyrics really have nothing going on. The sheer monotony of the delivery made the rest of the album seem like it had less variety than it did. Toward the end (“Skies Over Cairo,”) I realized hey, if this were a soundtrack to some whimsical, 2010’s indie studios’ video game, people would be all over this. Just enough conceptual fun and weirdness to get me interested. But as a piece of music… they got one part of the assignment right, but not the other bits. 2/5

Did not finish this one. Vocals were super lackluster. Music wasn't that special either. Pretty boring.

Interesting music. The songs were okay.

Album was fine. Ok. Unremarkable or memorable

Too many bleeps and blorps for me. Some of the songs where catchy, however.

Wasn’t impressed with this album. Seemed repetitive and the songs all blended together.

I mean, it's not awful or some such. After listening for a while, I stopped hearing the music consciously. It was just something in the background.

it was ok

Liked this one at first but as it went on, I just didn’t care for the sound. Can’t really do a track ranking because none of the songs really stood out to me. Not an *awful* album but there’s def better out there. Overall: 2/5

Very trippy, but all songs seem to follow the same kind off 70-ish sound.

Ihan hauska hetkittäin. Ei mitään tietoa mitä tämä levy tekee tällaisella listalla.

Höttöä

A little bit electro, easy to listen

Started off okay but I lost interest and it started to become annoying. Not for me.

Not sure how this would be groundbreaking. Didn't do much for me at all.
