Something really powerful and confident in the strangeness of this music. Despite having heard her name many times this is my first time giving her a serious listen. I like what I'm hearing.
First off, recommend watching is the 1991/92 live performances at Montreux Jazz Festival. Captivating and passionate, she's got the "I fuckin' dare you" energy directed at the crowd and I'm all for it. My understanding is the 1991 festival she was pretty unknown. Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeSj8SnUgUI&list=PL_TOoo0i6bTnIRgto-WfF8dN5Y3dHK_qr Tori Amos had a LOT to say in this album. It's pretty dark, has a bit of venom, with some little tongue in cheek chuckles. I definitely prefer this album to many other singer-songwriter 90s albums, she is really bearing everything here. It's clearly very autobiographical processing of childhood traumas, puberty, and adulthood navigating it all. Tracks like Me and a Gun are haunting, it's pretty obvious the subject-matter and you feel like you must respectfully listen it, but it's definitely not light. Again, I prefer the live versions where it's even more blunt and plain in your face, especially Precious & Winter. I had a phase where I was really into early Tori Amos but I kind of can't really listen to it much anymore, I was much more angry and moody then. Still, it's a damn good debut. Unfortunately I liked less and less the more she put out. Best tracks are Crucify, Silent all These Years, Precious, Winter.
I would like to listen more, very 90s
Never heard this album before. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Etremely intimate production fits the intimacy of the songs. Tori seems to have no problem wearing her heart on her sleeve even whn=en the subject matter is difficult and anger is the emotion that is laid bare - Me and a Gun, Crucify The arrangements make me want to re visit the album and each listen reveals more lyrically than the previous listen. Her voice and style is in the Kate Bush style, though not quite is high in register. I enjoyed listening to this fine album. 4 stars
Very mixed feelings about this artist. Great voice, great piano playing, but the songs somehow make me feel somewhat uncomfortable.
Beautiful and intense
Before listening my colleague said Tori Amos reminded her of Fiona Apple and I definitely see the similarities as did many other reviewers Dynamic female vocals with understated piano accompaniments that shine at just the right moments I respect the diversion from the typical pop sounds of the 90's and the road that was paved for many indie artists today 4/5
like it, reminds of kate bush
Country correct
I’m surprised that I enjoy this. It also reminds me of a period of time in music. Reading the liner notes on Apple Music, adding guitar would have killed these songs. Trust the artist.
I appreciate and respect Tori’s ability to convey many different emotions so well in this record. Most are very somber and brutal while still being energetic in some way. It very much feels like the soundtrack to a musical in how grand the instrumentation is and how anecdotal or specific the lyrics are. Definitely surprised by this! 7/10
Wunderbare Stimme. Sehr gute Singer-Songwriterin.
Maybe a little less rock-forward than her sophomore album. Classic Tori of piano dominant, with some intentional jangle-almost-off-note accents. Lineage of Bush and Mitchell.
Great album really well recorded piano and vocals.
quite compelling, liked more the more I listened. ethereal feminine energy
incredibly impressive and emotional album. the kate bush influences are obvious, but in the best way.
Probably would benefit from another listen - I like Tori Amos but I'd probably go for the more poppy stuff I am ashamed to admit!
This is a great album. I loved it when it came out - it just seemed to tap into some feeling at the time. Probably more among women, but I was a mid-20s guy at the time and I could also relate to the feelings of isolation and childhood trauma. It felt so personal, like going to a therapist but more enjoyable. 4 stars.
Beautiful and iconic music.
This album commands one's attention. Initially I was at 3, by the en ofthe album a 4.
Winter 👏
Torch songs by a very good singer/songwriter. Like Kate Bush but less eccentric.
4/5. Honestly a great collection of soft pop songs. Each one filled with great vocals and lyrics. A moving album for a debut.

I mean ultimately surely we have to blame Tori for Amanda Palmer, don't we? Good job this album's good enough to let me forget about that for a while.
Being only passingly familiar with Tori Amos, I didn't expect this album to have quite such an interesting and literate pop sound, its more closely aligned with Kate Bush and Bjork than Katie B. Hawkins (not that there's anything wrong with Ms Hawkins, she's written some bangers.) It was a pleasant surprise. Some of the sounds on the album err a bit to close to Casio keyboard territory for comfort. Admittedly it was the early 90's but the DX-7 had been in production for almost a decade, its not like they didn't know what good synth sounds were. It becomes a lot more palatable if you chalk it up to a low fi artistic choice on the part of Amos rather than a symptom of the cynicism and "progress over quality" attitude they had in the 90's but I suspect that wasn't the case. Either way that's just the Synth Nerd in me talking, it doesn't actually affect the songs which are strange, beautiful and charming. The album is a touch on the longer side but doesn't outstay its welcome. Very good 4/5
Excellent album. Reminds me of Kate Bush sometimes. Thought it was going to be boring because of the size, but I was thankfully wrong.
Sounds a lot like Kate Bush and sometimes sounds like Alanis Morissette. Think my fav track is Mother ~ long, kind of haunting, loved the piano. Good, not great, 4/5
really pretty songs, definitely something special even if it doesn't have that many streams on spotify.
I never really known Tori Amos for anything but her name and a few songs. But if any of her other albums are just remotely like Little Earthquakes that’s a mistake. Amos possesses an incredible vocal and an ability to write complex, intriguing and almost theatrical songs. Just listen to the breathtaking “Crucify” and “Precious Things”.
It’s really good the same strong and powerful female solo vocalist Kate Bush, Bjork, Alanis Morrisette kinda stuff. This album is slightly weaker than those 3’s “peak albums” ( hounds of love, debut, jagged little pill) but this is still a very worthy listen the lyrics all over are amazing high 4/5. (Also I realise that this album is before 2 of the artists I mentioned really blew up its just a comparative point as those 3 are much more popular than this person)
really fantastic and also amazing kate bush sounding a bit at points!! Heartbreaking and also invigorating best songs: me and a gun, little earthquakes, crucify
I like it but don't love it. Solid but missing something.
I think that I was not necessarily in the mood to listen to this album as I wanted it. She has a great voice and the songs are catchy. It does seems a bit classic but yeah ! 3.5 / 5
I don't think I'm ever going to be a gigantic Tori Amos fan (probably because I was a contemporary fan of a lot of the performers of the next generation that were influenced by her), but this a very good album. Part of why the college rock into alternative rock transition era is so interesting to me is because an album like this was heard as an "alternative" album, but also in the brief window that "alternative" rock culture was being made most accessible to the general public (which the Deluxe Edition's bonus track of her B-side cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit really illustrates). I'm still coming up with my grand theory of the era, but no matter what I think it is really cool that this was a time period where Tori Amos was an "Important Artist" (with capital I and A) in the music culture. This album is a heavy listen, but it is still real powerful. The transition between the last two tracks, Me and a Gun into the title tracker, is an incredible way to end an album.
Really enjoyed this - she has a beautiful voice.
Not bad at all - didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised.
Had not heard of her before but I ended up liking it a lot. "Crucify", "Precious Things" and "Leather" were my highlights.
Great themes and music
Kate Bush inspired, no doubt. Tori Amos should be prepared to be featured in a Stranger Things episode when the show gets into the 1990s! This is moody, dream-like album. Lots of fun sound mixing, great piano riffs, and her voice is incredible. Amos is a talented singer-songwriter, and a visionary artist. These songs are quite powerful at times. Precious Things is a poem and an entire experience. She's the anti-Sophie B. Hawkins in that all the same pieces are in place, but Amos is a minor key version of Hawkins. So dark, so intense, and in my opinion much more interesting - Aimee Mann type of vibe. I wish I could play the piano...and write songs...and sing...
Tori Amos is someone who's rarely talked about anymore, which is quite a shame, as her music is amazing. Songs like "Winter", "Crucify", "Precious Things" and "Silent All These Years" prove my point on why she's so amazing. Her vocals are beautiful, and every instrument played on this album make me transcend. This is teetering on a five for me.
A bit Kate Bush, a lovely collection of songs. Her voice is sweet but strong.
I have always really liked this album.
I really like the piano and orchestral arrangements in this album. Tori Amos also has a very pretty voice.
Pre Fiona Apple shenanigans
8/10 really liked it not EXACTLY my style but still super enjoyable nonetheless and Leather was a FUCKING BANGER, god damn! yeah pretty fun!
I got a less pop-y madonna vibe from this album. Didn't think I would but I liked this girl's material. Given that the last album I listened to was the sex pistols, the was a pleasant purge of that chaos. Now I need to find the lyrics. Hopefully, I haven't been innocently baptized into some demon-crustacean-worshipping cult in the process. But then, it wouldn't be the first time....
Athough it's 1992 it still sounds 80s which isn't so much a criticism but the fact it sounds like a lot of other equally great songstresses (a hint of Pat Benatar and even Kate Bush in there) detracts somewhat from the originality. Even so there's some nice songs on here and I found it easy to listen through.
Appraisal of this project as Kate-Bush-lite is inescapable, musically speaking. On the other hand, there's a grungy side, too, and it eventually reveals itself as more than an affectation. The length of the LP helped here. A world with more pop music like this wouldn't be so bad.
Prachtige stem!
Great album! Powerful and original songwriting. How have I managed to never actually hear a Tori Amos recording before? I’ll have to listen again and check out her later albums. Favorite songs: Precious little things Happy phantom Little earthquakes
Really cool album, very interesting songwriting. Weird and emotional. Not sure if I’ll revisit this album or not but super well made album
Her ballads were simple but profound, personal yet somehow universal, melodically discordant, achieving a synthesis of emotional states and not just musical styles. (7/10) FT: Me And A Gun, Silent All These Years, Crucify
This one really demanded a close listen, like it really wanted your attention. I understand why fans are obsessed with this. The mixture of slightly obtuse lyrics with some pretty painful openness (esp. Me and a Gun) make this a challenging listen. Tori Amos' playing and singing remain fresh and immediate, thanks to some pretty tasteful and timeless production choices. There was a small movement of more honest female singer-songwriters at the time (Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, Suzanne Vega), but I think this record was still pretty influential on female singers in the 90s and Aughts; the way they presented and the topics they felt they could sing about. Each time I listened to this record, I got more out of it. A sometimes uncomfortable listen, but rewarding.
Good piano driven singer/songwriter pop/rock with some strong songs and enough melody to keep it interesting. 3.5/5
I keep forgetting to review these
Nice voice, not my normal music though.
Very nice. Songs worth listening to, interesting lyrics, original musical ideas. Lovely voice, nice arrangements.
I could see this as being what Alanis Morissette or Sarah Barellies listened to all the time. I liked it a lot
Good and sad
Cut from the same cloth as Kate Bush and Imogen Heap. I liked it quite a bit, but some songs definitely stuck out more than others, especially in the back end of the record. I could see this one becoming quite a grower for me.
"Little Earthquakes" is the debut album by Tori Amos and had five singles released. I found her back story up to that point very interesting; Tori was a musical child prodigy winning a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Age 5, the youngest person ever. But, at age 11 she was kicked out for musical insubordination for her inability to read sheet music while playing. She had a synth-pop band group in the late 80's which didn't last long and eventually broke through with this album after the record company rejected her first version. The album was initially released in the UK since the record company thought the UK reception of an "eccentric peformer" would be better received. The music itself is pretty much exclusively piano based. The lyrics seemed to be very personal and are the strength of the album along with her vocal delivery. "Crucify" starts the album off and sets the tone with her piano and a song about life, religion and society making you feel guilty. Something about growing up in a house with a father as a pastor might have played a part. For me the musical highlight, is "Silent All These Years." The emotion, musical delivery and lyrics still sound pretty stunning. The song that convinced the record company to release the record is her a capella song "Me and a Gun." It was her first single, released in the UK and based on her life experience of being raped. Heavy stuff! With most of (maybe all) these songs based on very personal experiences, it defintely brings a depth to the music. Her piano playing is great too with little other accompaniment. I guess it's always good to see a very talented (or anyone) person struggle and then finally succeed.
Fits right into the 90s female singer-songwriter scene. Tori Amos is a name I know, but I couldn't name a song unlike Sarah McLaughlin, Lisa Loeb, or several others from that era. Overall a well-made album though not my type of music. I liked the haunting piano tones and the layers within the instruments that give it a bit of a psychedelic slant. Going to try to rate this objectively, I can see a lot of talent in her voice, songwriting, and in the piano playing so I'll give a 4 despite my personal enjoyment of the music or connection to it.
Oh I LOVE this!! I don't think I've heard of Tori Amos before.
Full of 90s angst. Songs are good, Tori is a talented artist with lots to say
Top album A couple of songs too long Cover art: 4/5
A strong 4. I’m not normally a big fan of the quirky, warbling female vocal + piano/acoustic guitar but she really nails it. On the cusp of a 5 but I couldn’t find a stand out banger on there so had to listen to Cornflake Girl after it finished to round things off. Still a great debut.
Excellent album. There have been Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell comparisons which occasionally make sense but I think this stands on its own - great piano melodies, Tori has a unique and super-expressive and emotional voice that - rarely, for me - considerably adds to the music rather than detracts. I remember when this hit; amongst the exploding grunge and alt-rock you would hear everywhere this album stuck out; on the surface it seems like it might have been at the other end of the spectrum from the Pearl Jam/STP/Nirvana wall but I actually think it compliments them perfectly. There's a hard edge here amidst the surface-level mellow piano ballads which is encapsulated in her voice and lyrics - the rare album where I do notice lyrics, and for good reason. Emotional, haunting, clear, and yet somehow still catchy. Highly recommended. 9/10 4 stars.
I disliked this album at first but really warmed up to it as it went on. Her sound really reminds me of Kate Bush. Highlights: Happy Phantom, Leather
obsessed w this album
Tori has her own sound as a singer/songwriter/pianist. However, I can pick up on her Kate Bush influence. I think her songs are suited for a more mature female audience. At least, that's been my experience as I knew of her while growing up but never really enjoyed her music until now.
9/10
UPEA!!
reminiscent of Kate Bush. Wanted to re-listen to understand the lyrics. Overall good -3.7
Beautiful voice, cool melodies, takie 4 na szynach
very solid 4,5; beautiful voice, beautiful melodies, really ambitious music between rock and pop, lyrics about serious and important problems, I love it, it's very influential on contemporary music imo
I knew a couple of songs but not the album. It was a good effort and I enjoyed the album. Excellent musical composition and great singing voice.
Fucking great album. I'm not even sure if it's her best, though.
Prachtig!
Lyrically potent; incredible instrumentals; harrowing and exciting, Amos has a fantastic voice packed with emotion
this was its own little earthquake when it came out - she was so different, so unashamed and unafraid, and it was awesome. i've probably never actually listened to the entire album in its entirety until now, and...yeah, it was fun. a nice look at the slice of time it's from, and a pretty cool preview, if you happen to know ani and alanis are on their way *right* behind her
On the edge of pop and experimental, I will give it a chance
Brilliant. Always loved this album. 4/5
Bloody brilliant. Still feels fresh 30 years on.
I really enjoyed Crucify, Precious Things, and Leather. Tori has a great voice. This album was a nice surprise and a pleasant listen.
I really liked this. At first I thought it was a bit nothingy, but as it went on I really warmed to it. Good lyrics, some good musical choices.
Kate bush men hon heter int. Fanar dock!!!
Reminiscent of a more reserved Kate Bush, the songs range from starkly intimate to anthemic. A captivating album
Soulful ballads, heartfelt emotion coupled with haunting piano makes for a good listen
Singer-songwriter albums have been incredibly hit-or-miss for me in this venture - this is a hit. Crazy good album that I was not expecting to like this much. It's sad as fuck at times, and Me and a Gun is chilling and heartbreaking, but never did I feel bored or think the songs sounded too similar. Her vocal inflections on China are one example of the variety throughout, the piano on Leather another Saved: Winter, China*, Leather
I loved this album when it first came out. Today, it has lost a little, but still holds up. Silent All These Years is still such a great song.
Listened to this album twice before -- O woman you!! But the end lags a little bit. I love the energy of precious things, happy phantom, and girl :)
univers
Reminds me of college, in some good ways in some bad. 4*
Great album!
It's giving Kate Bush Favorites: Crucify Girl Precious Things China
A lot of attractive different tracks in one album.
Great. A lot of variety in a seemingly simple album.
I knew the name but am not sure if I've ever listened to Tori Amos before. Honestly, I didn't even know it's a woman. It was a very nice listen. A lot of emotion and musical depth. But I didn't find it gripping enough to see myself actively listening to much more of it.
Great album, some sings seemed to me to be a little sleepy vibe, but I wouldn´t be surprised to give it a 5 one day.
The song appears as light filament once I've cracked it. As long as I've been doing this, which is more than thirty-five years, I've never seen the same light creature in my life. Obviously similar chord progressions follow similar light patterns, but try to imagine the best kaleidoscope ever—after the initial excitement, you start to focus on each element's stunning original detail. For instance, the sound of the words with the sound of the chord progression combined with the rhythm manifests itself in a unique expression of the architecture of color-and-light. ... I started visiting this world when I was three, listening to a piece by Béla Bartók; I visited a configuration that day that wasn't on this earth. ... It was euphoric.[17] At five, she became the youngest student ever admitted to the preparatory division of the Peabody Conservatory of Music.[18][19] She studied classical piano at Peabody from 1968 to 1974.[18] In 1974, when she was eleven, her scholarship was discontinued, and she was asked to leave. Amos has asserted that she lost the scholarship because of her interest in rock and popular music, coupled with her dislike for reading from sheet music.[
this took a while to warm up I think but, i liked the style, it was passionate with strong lyricism and piano and was overall v nice. ‘Leather’ = 😍😍😍
very pretty. me and my gun was very emotional
A lot of this album was beautiful storytelling and poetic sounds- and then Man with a Gun hits you at the end of it. Fuck, dude.
I think this sort of music hasn't aged particularly well. Pleasant enough to listen to, but didn't really grab me.
At first I wasn't wild about this one, but I ended up loving its songwriting, performances, and production.
A lot of unique textures and sounds. The good songs are really good. I definitely could see myself liking this album a lot upon further listens.
Great album, great singer.
I always liked Tori, although I see why some don't, she's a bit dramatic....but this album has some nice melodies for sure
Tori Amos has a great voice. I also really liked some of the songs. The music reminded me of Kate Bush. But just like with her, I can hardly bring myself to listen to the whole album. Toward the end, the vocals started to get on my nerves. 3/5
It's 3.5
Muy lindo, pero larguísimo como la cuaresma
Very intense
Obviously talented, just not really my thing. A couple of songs like Winter sounded like they belonged on a Disney cartoon. It was alright though.
Nive
5/10
Vocal talent and some creativity in the songwriting made this a more enjoyable listen than I may have expected for a genre I don't care that much for.
Parempi kuin odotin. 3/5.
Epic ballads and Disney songs. I liked it.
Up until about six months ago I knew nothing of Tori Amos. Then a friend insisted I saw here in Manchester. He was sad that she had lost the range in her voice, but as I didn't have that background I just enjoyed it. With this album I can hear the range she had. Very Kate Bush-esk in sound. Lyrics that have to be listened to, more than once in many cases. Very good. Still not one of my personal top albums, but a great listen.
First time listening to a Tori Amos album. Quite enjoyed it. I love Kate Bush so I would expect that giving this a few more run throughs would be worthwhile to really get into the lyrics etc. Good stuff.
I didn’t really get it. But then I heard “Me and a Gun”. I get it.
Tori A(l)mos(t) Kate Bush
3.5. It’s not like I’m going to go out of my way to listen to more Tori Amos but I enjoyed it
I'm not familiar with Tori Amos so was quite excited to listen to this album. But despite sounding a bit like Kate Bush at times it just kind of went on and on. (Still gets a three though!)
Sehr popmäßig, aber irgendwie was interessanter und vielschichtiger? Spannend aber kommt nicht auf die Liste
I liked some of the songs but this doesn’t really have the staying power that Sinead O’Connor had earlier in the list. I’m not sure when I’d revisit it.
it’s ok. would rather listen to kate bush or fiona apple instead
She a baddie! Pretty solid album. Wasn't perfect but a some songs were occasionally ok to listen to. 3.5/5
Don’t understand this
Some powerful tracks, some misses ngl Fave track: Crucify
02/06/2026 Sorry love, not for me. Spotify listeners: 1.4 million
The album itself tends to be just OK musically imo, although it is mastered well and the singer has a good voice.
Liked most of this
Really liked her voice, but kind of forgettable across order similar albums
I could've sworn I had already gotten this on the album generator, because I gave it a shot semi-recently and found myself lukewarm, and I'm not sure what would've put it on my radar if not the roulette. But my previous involvement with Little Earthquakes predates my beginning of this project, so who knows. Anyway: I love Crucify, and after that I find it to be a bit of a drag of a listen. Kate-Bush-at-home, as one might say. There's some real fat to trim here; China, which comes about halfway through, is an overwrought mess that grinds all momentum to a halt. Mother isn't much better, and clocks in at seven minutes. I certainly can appreciate it as a bridge between Kate Bush and Fiona Apple, but she doesn't have the staying power over 55 minutes like those artists do.
When I read a review that said "inferior version of Kate Bush" I was worried but I actually found this a pretty engaging and mostly pleasant listen.
Three for now as it felt disconnected but some great tracks
The reverb and pace of one of the songs reminded me of Ana Gabriel and that filled my heart :D but the rest was only ok. I think this album might require several replays to grow on you, but I'm not gonna go through that.
Not the hugest fan but the track Winter really is sublime - thank you Mick Foley for the hot tip!
Quelle intro! Silent All These Years.
charlotte tilbury if she could play the piano
Me *listening to Kate Bush*: "Hold my beer"
Not a bad album. Nothing much to add
Good, but it went on 20 minutes to long.
Really cool voice.
Wasnt really into it with the first songs but then i started to enjoy it a lot more! Me and a gun is great!
Yep, sounds like Tori Amos.
Crucify is S-Tier. Album style is not my thing.
drums and piano are fun. Very kate bush, very lyrical. Chord progressions and melodies/riffs go a little crazy ngl. Very fascinating stuff mixing is really satisfying to listen to. The piano is definitely the main draw of this album guitar in leather is nice. me and a gun is a great track as well- not my vibe but definitely chilling Highlights: precious things (i bVI bVII makes me weak), happy phantom
7/10
Look this is a very nice album. She's very talented. She has a lot of skills. I love the lyrics but I don't know if it just hit me on the wrong day or what but I don't think I'm going to be returning it to it too often. So if I could I'd do three and a half I got to go three
Well, it's ok I guess, it's far from unpleasant and the lyrics are kind of interesting too but somehow I can't hook into it.
Its good singer songwriter piano stuff... can definitely see her influence on singers of the era (Jewel). Would throw this on again.
I don't know what is it with me and Tori Amos. I should have been a great fan a long time ago, but something about her work does not connect with me. I've listen to this album before, and again today. Like last time, I think it's an impressive record. The style is personal and the voice and piano playing is unique and well thought of. But, well, it's not really for me. Sometimes things like that happen. I still appreciate the album, and there's are some undisputed bangers on it. Maybe some day I'll fully get it. Until that day, it's a respectable solid 3.
*Very intense album- I didn't find it bad but won't relisten
it was fairly good i’m just not a tori amos person i think
enjoyed most of this; probably will revisit 3 stars
This one really built momentum as it went for me. About midway through I really locked in and enjoyed it.
Too feminine and art/coffee house. I did not read the lyrics so may have missed a bit. Definitely of its time.
Vocals are great, the songwriting is interesting. The songs are a bit too slow for me and the album never really changes gears. She is an obvious talent. 3/5 Probably won't listen again
Piano singer-songwriter, kinda kate bush-esque orchestral feel at times
Album # 63, Tori Amos, Little Earthquakes, ⭐⭐⭐ I’m going to level with you, I didn’t listen to this under the best circumstances. I was travelling, driving in stormy weather, with my toddler in the backseat, so it was hard to focus or even hear everything properly. I couldn’t exactly blast it the way it probably needs. I did go back and listen to a few of the standout tracks again afterwards though. I thought it was okay. This is the kind of album that should be right up my alley, but it just didn’t really land with me. That said, I do think there’s more to it, so I’ll definitely give it another go. It starts strong. Crucify and Girl are both really great, but after that it dips a bit for a stretch. There’s a lot of overwrought sensitivity on it, and at times she sounds a bit like a poor man’s Kate Bush. Mother was a real highlight, and Me and a Gun is genuinely powerful. It’s an incredibly impressive piece of songwriting, and the fact it was released as the lead single is kind of amazing. That’s easily one of the standout moments on the album. But overall, I found it a bit meandering and not especially focused. There are beautiful passages, but there are weird, out of place moments too. Precious Things was a low point. It felt like a proto-emo track, almost like Evanescence, and that’s not a sound I have any interest in. It’s also a very serious album, which didn’t really help given the circumstances I was listening in. I do think that affected my experience a lot. So yeah, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. It could easily be a two or a four star, but I just don’t know so, for now, it’s a three.
i dont know maan... Meh
Mooi!
My mom had this on cd but I can only find the paper booklet for it in the basement, such a shame. Some really nice songs, I love the first and last song very much. Her voice is unique and hard to replicate, don't even try.
Review - first time really listening to a Tori Amos album. I really wanted to like this, but it was just ok. I'm not a big piano-rock guy, and her singing feels self-consciously Kate Bush like. Sorry Rating - 5.5/10 Need to hear? YES
This was a very interesting album. I enjoyed Tori Amos’s calm yet mysterious tone, especially in the beginning of the album. There were two criticisms, however, that I had of it. First, its high level of repetition often made it boring or sometimes even annoying. I was also slightly bored due to its lack of excitement; the lyrics weren’t awfully philosophical and the music itself wasn’t too pretty or exciting. I actually enjoyed the album overall, but all of the songs were consistently a 6.5/10.
If you like Kate Bush, this is for you. If you don’t like Kate Bush. This is not for you. I liked some of the songs that I have probably heard on the radio or something before but outside of that it’s a pretty average “sad misunderstood girl” album.
Crucify and Silent all these Years are some nostalgia classics, I suppose. Listing to Tori Amos just makes me want to listen to Kate Bush, tho.
crucify
Is everyone gonna be mad if I say I thought "Winter" was an Evanescence song? Crucify is-in Nick's words- such a banger
I wanted to jam with this more. I love whimsical floaty voices but this didn't quite hit it for me.
I like her lyricism. 6.6/10
Ahhh women’s lib music. This isn’t as unbearable as most of the womens movement, hear me roar bull crap. This is musically sound but not overly great in the “I really liked that song” sense. Darker than what I expected but I knew that about Tori Amos. She’s not bubble gum. Sort of heavier than Enya. She’s like what the Melvin’s are to Nirvana in comparison to her and anyone who played at Lilith Fair more than once. You won’t feel like you wasted your time listening to this but you will look forward to listening to something else while listening to it Choice cut: Winter
Pretty heavy lyrics but great vocal performance, interesting blend of piano and percussion, album just became tiresome toward the end
Decent 90's album. A little too slow and soft for me.
I enjoyed it. 3.5
I never was a Kate Bush girly, which I feel like makes me less likely to vibe with Tori as well. I respect her artistically way more than I want to listen to her stuff. She's def one of those ones that I like more in small portions; listening to a full album gets a bit old. Me and a Gun is hunting.
crazy
Solid
Precious Things is high drama!
There were times where I enjoyed the melodrama then other times it just sounded like shrill shrieking and I enjoyed it less
Poetic and sometimes brutal but not a musical style that appeals to me
The first half of this album was really hard for me to get through, hitting its low point with “China.” But things picked up in the second half, and I enjoyed the Queen-like arrangements on “Leather.” The last couple tracks, “Me And A Gun” and “Little Earthquakes” were pretty powerful, and have me rounding up to three stars today.
Painfully white music, and I'm white. I can see the appeal but it left me wanting any groove/drums/rhythm ect. But that's on me not being in the mood for emotional a cappella art today I guess
Aldi Fiona Apple. Sorry
Not bad
During the first bit of the album I didn’t like it at all, but as it continued it definitely got a lot better. I don’t think these songs are the greatest. She has decent vocals. Favorite: Leather Second favorite: Happy Phantom
Polished, but unremarkable.
Ok album with bunch of great songs and then bunch of not so great, in my opinion. Solid 3.
It was nice
Tori Amos, felt like a dated album and did not enjoy most of it until Me and a Gun just visually striking in your mind to the conversation. Overall giving it 3/5.
Liked it.
It's alright, don't really have any strong views
I enjoyed it. Not really my genre but it was a good listen throughout but nothing exceptional to push it up to a 4.
Litt variasjon fra det vanlige gubberælet.
I’m not super into it. There’s a stylistic thing happening here that I don’t particularly care for. Some of it seems comically over acted in a way. Notable tracks include Girl, Silent All These Years, Little Earthquakes.
An album I respect, but not for me.
Pretty songs, pretty piano, pretty voice but it's too overwrought for me. I struggle with other artists in the same way (Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile, Muse, etc.) so I recognize that this is a personal flaw.
first time listening to this. I dug some of the early tracks but nothing in the second half of the record stood out to me. I enjoyed the sparseness and space amongst the instruments. some of these songs sounded like precursor to Taylor Swift (mix of songwriting and alto voice) — I don’t think I’ve met a Swiftie who’s also into Tori Amos or Joni Mitchell, despite there being plenty of parallels, which is kinda wild.
Gateway drug to Indigo Girls. Makes me want wrap myself in a blanket, put on my pussy hat, and cry while holding a pint of Ben & Jerry's latest flavor, "Queer-Lime Pie". 3.4/5 plaid button-ups
vocally good and probably popular at the time. but i just dont see myself coming back to listen to this on purpose.
I was probably unfairly dismissive of this when it came out on grounds of it being too obviously indebted to Kate Bush down to the tribute cover art. But music is full of musicians honouring their influences in this way. Some more obvious than others. I'm never going to choose to listen again as I struggle with the piano as a lead instrument in this way throughout a whole album. But I can appreciate the songs and the ultimately unique path she has forged albeit with Kate's help at the start.
This album was all over the place for me. I loved some songs, like “Happy Phantom” and “Winter”, but many others were annoying or too operatic for me.
Ethereal 90s jams
listened to again i like her, but this album still seems inconsistent somehow
It was ok. After about half way I’d gotten a bit bored and thought I’d accidentally started playing a Disney soundtrack. Would I listen again? No.
You know what at first I was really not into this album and it actually drifted so much into the background that I forgot it was on. Then in the second half of the album there were some great songs. Just like an earthquake splits the earth I too am split.
Lovely stuff
Hmmm skeptisk!
"So you can make me cum... that doesn't make you Jesus." Damn. Some real bars on this. Love the title track too.
First half of this album was really strong. A powerful message of women empowerment in an oppressive world. Loved the piano in particular. The second half was pretty forgettable though. Favorite track was Crucify or precious things
This is fine
Interesting songs, might listen to again
good! felt almost like musical theatre at some point. don’t think i’ll revisit but it was fine! i’m sure the lyrics are great but i did not actively listen :(
I wish more songs here were like "Precious Things" instead of being like "Happy Phantom". Regardless she's a great singer.
Did not like this when it started, but iteventually grew on me. Still wasn’t really my cup of tea but I can appreciate it to an extent.
It was fine.
Enjoyable, though admittedly not my thing.
Heavy Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro influences on here. Enjoyed it overall
Out of the gate fully formed, very pleasant piano throughout
A shaky start, but it does pick up after a few songs.
Not really for me. But I can see why people would be into this
for a debut album this is a solid body of work. I don’t have much to say. liked the acapella track on it but there’s not many songs I would listen to again I think. and in saying that I might be missing the point of this album cuz I’m seeing lots of high reviews on it. -favourite tracks: WINTER and ME AND A GUN
One of those okay albums. It has some stand out songs like China, Leather and Little Earthquakes. And also I like piano in most of the aongs. It smoothly blends in and underline the atmosphere.
I was ready to hate on this, but it’s actually pretty awesome
Great album. Really good writing and vocal delivery.
There’s talent, but this is a bit of a dry listening experience
I didn't know Tori Amos. I expected Fiona Apple-adjacent but I got Kate Bush-lite.
The talent here is undeniable. Piano playing is great and vocals are very good. The songs are just okay though. It feels like I need to give it another listen.
Once this gets going it has a lot. Actual lyrics. Dancing piano. There’s an attitude in all this which shoots straight at you. I can’t say I love it but I’m afraid of it, and if you need an anthem then Amos has one for you.
3.5
I kinda liked it, she has a great voice.
chill pop music I kind of like it.
the songs on here are very well written, unfortunately it seems like she lost most of the sheet music on the way to the studio and all that was left was piano. ive always found that its hard to carry an entire song on the back of a piano, much less an entire album. the sparse instrumentation makes it hard to justify the length of the songs for me.
I've never explored the catalog of Tori Amos and I'm not sure why - she fits the description of music I would like. I think it probably has to do with the timing of when she burst onto the scene (with this album, coincidentally,) and it didn't sound like anything that I was into at the time. I've liked just about everything I have heard from Tori and that includes this album.
Nice album
It was just an ok record.
Rock, 1993 -> 3
I have heard of Tori Amos but wasn't particularly familiar with her material. This album was fine. She has a nice voice and the instrumentation was interesting. The songs weren't super engaging to me, so while I would listen again, I am not in a rush to do so.
Good record
I generally like the album, but sometimes Amos' songs have too much drama and pathos. I would prefer them to be a touch happier, and far less confessional.
Un disco muy de los noventa. Me ha gustado bastante.
Decent
I really enjoy the songwriting on this album, and I like how emotionally expressive Tori Amos is in her singing. She creates some interesting melodies and I always love a piano player. I will admit two things keep the album down though: some of the songs get a little too “goopy ballad” for me to appreciate — “China” didn’t do much for me — and it’s long. Very few singer-songwriter albums need to be an hour long. But I get that it was the peak of the CD era and that was more standard. Anyway, I enjoyed this overall.
After a two month break from the generator, I’m back with this album. A decent suite of piano driven songs.
Always heard of this album, but never got around to listening to it. Kate Bush esque is the first thing that springs to mind, and as such that's always a positive. However, it gets intense in places. Best Tracks: Silent All These Years; Happy Phantom; Me and a Gun
Whelming
more singer/songwriter stuff. obviously the lyrics carry this and they're pretty nice, albeit not my absolute favorites. this album reminds me a lot of taking painting lessons in high school. i imagine this would pair nicely with drawing or something else like that. can totally see how the writing and stripped down instrumentals would go on to inspire a lot of other women in this lane. very 90s too. deserves to be one of the 1001? yes
Silent all these years still gives me goosebumps, but the rest of the album has always weirdly left me a bit cold. Overall a 3
Didn't do anything for me. Nothing bad, just no connection
dramatic, melodic, emotional
I am glad that I am revisiting Little Earthquakes after a few years off of this album as I think I will get a much better appreciation for this project as a whole. Tori Amos is not an artist I was particularly huge on when I first got around to her music, but I feel as my tastes have shifted and grown, this album seems to stick a lot better than my first go around with it. Tori's more thoughtful lyrics and sometimes more contemporary production may not be for everyone, but I see her as the 90s response to Kate Bush's very artistic take over of indie music during the late 70s and 80s as a new face to take up the mantel in a whole new way. Kate was very bold and weird, Tori is confident and yet somehow very accessible even with the unorthodox sounds that still managed to be somewhat of a popular hit for people during that day and age. I felt like I could appreciate this album a lot more than I enjoyed it, how Tori presents herself on this debut album is nothing short of impressive and the ideas she brings to the table are complete and extremely thoughtful. She was already a deeply focused and detailed artist right out of the gate and it makes sense why such a project would be seen as an essential to hear before you die. Even if I am not huge on this album, I would still recommend it to others looking for someone on Kate Bush's level that takes a complete different trajectory and still manages to be great all throughout her career.
Ground breaking at the time.
3.5/5. It’s decently nice, I’ll be relisteninng to some of the songs
It d be 3.5 for me i think, nit quite a 4, i really liked crucify and it was a nice album as far as i remember from two weeks ago.
I liked this just fine! Wish this spoke to me more but didn't really get it. Like a more boring Kate Bush? I don't know. Didn't dislike it but didn't fully click either.
No alcanza a alcanzarme...
Pretty boring stuff but I liked some of the rock songs on here with guitar
Kate Bush walked so Tori Amos could run. Even though I know a couple songs of Tori’s that aren’t on this album don’t have this exact sound, all I could think about is just how similar her and Kate Bush sound while I listened to this album. What helps the rating overall is that this album is much less experimental and is a lot more accessible.
Solid mom music.
3/5
I like the piano and orchestration. Some cool sounding songs. Glad to know more Tori Amos.
She Tori on my Amos until I have Little Earthquakes
OK
A good listen
Powerful singing and key slinging. I'd not sat and listened to Tori Amos before but she is a force!
Well, I guess I do have to listen to this. Wonderful album, depressing content.
Insert generic “sounds a bit like Kate Bush” comment here. Which is sort of true. I’m not a fan of Bush though and I preferred this, especially towards the end of the album. Nothing particularly grabbed my attention but it was pleasant enough.
I remember hearing a few of her songs on the Women of Rock Sirius channel, not sure if it was any of the songs here. I liked it, some of the lyrics definitely hit
This was a new listen for me. I enjoyed select tracks but it did not surpass other singer songwriters of the era that I prefer like Fiona Apple or Alanis Morriset. Standout tracks: Winter and Crucify me
Not her best but his album!
pretty but idgaf
Slightly insipid but not bad. 3.
I never really listened to Tori Amos in the 90s or 00s so listening to these albums fresh they just kind of pass by. There aren't really any standout tracks for me. It isn't offensively bad or terribly produced or anything I just cant connect with it.
I really want to like Tori Amos. She’s a great pianist, classically trained, but I just can’t get there for most of her stuff. To me, her voice and styling sound like something from a musical theater kid. It feels more like performance art than an album. 3 stars for the talent level but not really a fan.
Soft spoken rock songs with a high-pitched, whiny component on every track . Tori Amos is undoubtedly musically talented (in both her vocal achievements as well as her piano playing) but this isn’t my style of music.
Beautiful album. First time listening to the entire album, but I've had heard most of the songs before. Happy to experience start to finish. Tori"s voice beautiful. Her songs have a subdued confidence to them, she's not flaunting her talent she is simply using it to create beautifully composed work.
A classic album I was really looking forward to. And it was a thoroughly great listen, though it didn't blow me away. Maybe a hot take, but I even enjoyed the skits, which I don't normally do.
"oh it's hot and wet and slick, and it's makin' everybody sick, ooOOIIIiiil SPIIIIIILL" ok sorry now that I have that out of my system, I'm really glad I didn't know about this during my really depressed teen years because holy cow I wouldn't have made it out of bed. Now I found some of it really grating but other parts very pretty, not sure I'd listen to it all again but would continue occasionally listening to a song.2.5
Little poems and little heartaches.
Good voice, triumphant sounds. Pretty good listen for singer/songwriter.
Tori Amos is a name I feel like I've heard throughout my life but I can't name a single song by her. Didn't recognize a single song by her on this one. Not bad but also not my jam really. Really enjoyed Little Earthquakes!
There is a brilliant power and self-assurance to this album, especially given it's Tori Amos’ first solo album. Some of the tracks attack you with ambient yet powerful sounds that contribute to excellent ballads, completed by the excellent piano playing throughout. What let's the album down for me though is that some of the slower, less impactful songs don't hit the same heights and at times it makes for a slightly inconsistent pace, leaving me wanting more from certain sections of the album.
too edgy for me but sounded ok
There's something I enjoyed about this one, not quite sure what. It was good enough to listen through, but I admit I did get a bit fed up towards the end craving something else. Tori has a great voice, it's melodic and calm. Listenable.
