Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Mixed feelings when an artist is only mostly known by a cover version of another artist’s song. But this is a beautiful album, full of strong emotions and it made me a bit gloomy for Sinéad, the shitty life she had and the injustice she suffered.
Only few really good songs.
Sinead was such a natural singer with quite haunting tones to her voice, she didn't even need backing music. She was always quite outspoken as an individual on matters that she held dear, and a lot of the public and press hounded her for this, but that is irrelevant when it comes to the music she created. So let's look at this album. Her voice is faultless throughout every track, albeit some of the lyrics are weak at best. The backing music is very.lack lustre... like the last session those guys had was creating a mix tape for a shopping mall. The album was a good example of Sinead as a singer, but most of the tracks were instantly forgettable, other than The Emperors New Clothes and Nothing Compares to You.
I'd never listened to this album before, and only knew her great Prince cover, as it was EVERYWHERE when it came out. While I kinda like her voice, none of the other tracks did anything amazing for me, and were rather same-ish. 2.5 rounded to 3.
Love the voice. Obviously got the epic monolith of "Nothing Compares" Otherwise the songwriting is a bit slight. I think it would have gone under the radar without the big one.
its been seven hours and fifteen dayss
Great voice and emotion
Shitty Whitney Houston. Nothing Compares 2 U was a good song but nothing else to my liking. 80s/90s vibe. 2/3 star
Spacey post-new wave sounds, the music is pretty slow mellow minor key stuff with a mix of piano, acoustic guitars strumming, electrics chugging and some synth/keyboard accents. It's all bedding for the wide-ranging and impassioned vocals/lyrics which are the real driving force of the album. Nothing Compares 2 U is an incredible performance but none of the rest reaches those heights - it's not bad, but a bit slow and samey.
The style isn't for me, but there's a bravery to this absent from most other pop music on the list, a willingness to be clear, specific & uncomfortable. music: acknowledged. (⌐■_■)
Have come to appreciate Sinead. Real heavy stuff on this one, nice record.
Interesting? I didn't really like it very much I think I just need to be better
Better than i expected. Nice voice and a lot of variations between songs. Not exactly my style but it was pleasant to listen to.
My first time actually listening to anything by Sinead, and my opinion is it’s ok music. Generally not my thing
First listen Saved 5/10 Top track: Nothing Compares 2 U
I really love Sinead O'Connor, and I recently went through her entire discography, even purchasing a few CD's for albums that aren't streaming. I find "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" to be one of her most dated-sounding albums and one that I don't feel holds up like others in her discography. There are great songs, but I don't feel she had really found what she actually did want to make, yet (wink wink). To me, it's not until "Faith and Courage" that I really find her music incredibly powerful. "Sean-Nos Nua" is my favorite, and I also really love "Throw Down Your Arms" and "Theology." I also think I've almost listened to Prince's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" more, at this point, and prefer that version (yes, I know he wrote it).
du gros folk rien de désagréable
Fantastisk röst men endimensionellt
2.7/5 Never been a huge fan, but it's alright. Best track: I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
Solid, and of course great hit Nothing compares 2 U
HL: “Compares”, “I Am Stretched On Your Grave”, “Three Babies”, title track Glad this is on the list, it’s a jamboree of different genres and influences, but it’s also quite emotional and bleak (especially now). I won’t say that we should be hearing The Lion and the Cobra instead of this one here, but I personally got more enjoyment out of that (even more) uneven debut. Maybe it’s because of its rougher edges that get somewhat sanded over here, musically if not lyrically. “Three Babies” is incredibly sad Also, nothing quite like some Irish trad on a hip-hop beat 3.5
Oh, it’s like a boring Madonna or a slightly lame Cranberries. I like that cover version she did.
I do not want I haven’t heard. Haha. I get her cultural significance, but her music really isn’t for me, even after a full listen.
Sinead had a wonderfully beautiful voice and this album is really well produced but a little slow in parts for me. Overall I wanted to like it more than I actually did, but the songs I did like, I REALLY enjoyed. Stand out tracks: I Am Stretch on Your Grave, Black Boys on Mopeds, Nothing Compares 2 U
It was alright… it often feels dramatic for drama’s sake and the weight of the lyrics can’t match the instrumentation. I like the Irish influence being shown instead of just straight up art pop. 5/10
It was alright. Definitely should've finished jt tho
Rating: 3.0
Emotionally charged political album, only really knew of here outside the recent news of her passing from some hits she has. I think she had some real impactful songs that can hurt.
The album is quite bleak, with its songs about loss and death. Even bringing in the funky James Brown drum loop didn’t lighten things up, which isn’t surprising when you sing “I am stretched on your grave” over top of it. I give her thumbs up for tackling difficult topics and sticking to her guns.
Probably a 2.5 - real conflicted on this one. Wasn't vibing on first listen but picked up a lot more on second. A couple of these songs I really liked. And of course there's **that** song. RIP
Tempting to give it five stars for Nothing Compares 2 U but I don't get the hype based on the other tracks
Great voice. Album does not have focus. 50% pop album and 50% folk/Irish traditional album. Could have been better to commit 100% in one direction. That being said, still very good. Sinead's voice is incredible.
Just fine all around, don’t think her voice suits some of the acapella and bare arrangement moments on this. I’ve also noticed we get a lot of albums with an artist’s one smash hit on it - weird way to create a “1,001 albums you must hear list.”
It was good, very reminiscent of the 90s.
This had an interesting variety of styles, ranging from ballads to electronic to rock but I've never really been able to connect with her music.
aight
Really thoughtful, with little in the way of interesting musical aspects. O'Connor perhaps would have been better in the field of poetry. This is exemplified in the closing track, which puts full focus on her voice and words. This is by far the most impactful track and mamaged to stick with me after the album's end.
I had listened to this before. It sounds quite dated now but has powerful lyrics. Three Babies and Nothing Compares 2 U are very affecting. Kudos to O'Connor for speaking out against the patriarchy and Catholic church at the time.
Weird, unassuming, gentle. Almost like Bjork's early work if she was Irish.
Decent record to have on in the background. I really like a couple of the tunes, but the rest is just okay.
Really enjoyed this album in the first half. It got a bit tedious by the end, and I was glad to be done listening.
Begorrah! Shamrocks, leprechauns and a diddly-diddly-diddly o’ the morning’ to yah. Oirish!
I blame the pope
Such a haunting and ethereal voice, whilst her songs are rather lengthy, this I feel, is one of those times where it's needed to have that breathing room to fully appreciate her voice and the arrangements around her. Best: Nothing Compares 2 U Worst: You Cause As Much Sorrow 3.5 Stars
I think she was very interesting. Not in a bad way or anything. She clearly has a very special voice. Some of her songs dragged on (especially the last) but overall it was pretty good.
Good!
Gotta give it up for nothing compares 2 u
Billl
Beautiful voice, mediocre music.
Don't like when politics comes into music or sport. However good album with great vocals. Great cover of Nothing compares 2 u. Might have given a 4 if the best song on it was an original.
One thing is clear on this album. There are some incredibly good writing here by O’Connor. The tracks feel pop without much sacrifice. Even if the big hit wasn’t written by her, the album as a whole works too well. A nice early ‘90s piece of pop music that send a rather high standard for the decade.
Nice Album with couple of good tracks
It was good at the time, it stands up pretty well, unfortunately I can only rate out of five stars and five has to equal 100%, very few albums are worthy in my opinion. This one misses out on a four star by very little but, for me, not worthy in the category below perfection.
It's ok, but it's not memorable.
Diet Enya
One cracking song and a bit of filler.
Nothing Compares 2 U - amazing song. The rest is a bit of a hodgepodge, some of it OK but nothing up to those lvels.
Nothing Compares 2 U is absolutely the standout track, rest of it just kind of meanders along
I appreciate that she had something to say, I just didn't love this. Plus the biggest hit is a Prince cover.
Solid
6/10 really nice vocal performance , some interesting lyrics, but I felt that it dragged a lot.
5/10. The Emperor's New Clothes was pretty good, but I wasn't that impressed with the Prince cover or anything else on the album, though.
I only knew this lady because she got made fun of in South Park. Solid. The closing track felt like a mermaid's song.
Good album I really like it more of a 3.5 than a 3
yup. this is definitely an album from the 90s
Never listened to its entirety before. Very nice album.
irlanti huume hörhö... heh... hullu lyriukka alku...god give me courage tho change the wisdom.... en*lanti kritisismi aina saa propsit. muutama veltto biisi, muutama tiukka... oma laatuinen lauluma ääni,aina hyvä.. vaikka vituttaakin välillå... perkussionit, aina potkut edessä mutta hihatit piileskelee...ei uskalla...kuulostaako liian sekavalta silloin NO EI KUULOSTA...rohkeesti vaan...tarvi hävetä silmät päästä... i am streched on your grave
Canciones relajadas y pausadas. Algún tema muy memorable. Pop relax.
dont hate it = 3
2.7 I do really like Nothing Compares 2 U
250 million+ streams for one track on spotify and no more than 10 million for any other. I guess most people, like me, know one song by Sinead O'Connor. Now I get to find out what the rest of the songs on the album are like. Not that impressed to be honest. Her voice is impressive when it has enough echo added, and she can definately hold a tune. The song choices though are uninspired with the exception of the Prince composition.
She has a nice voice. I think that I am not to big of a fan of Voice + Guitar only on record. Overall that was a nice experience but I tend to think that it is a bit on plain side. Small 3.5 / 5
Sad boy 90s music
Yes, she may be a bit try hard to be different and kooky but what a voice. And to be fair, she IS different, though this album is pretty straight forward late 80s/early90s pop. Best Tracks: The Emporer's New Clothes; Nothing Compares 2 U; Last Day of Our Aquaintance
It was nice sounding and she has a pretty voice but the music kind of dragged
powerful 🥺
I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got has one iconic song and a bunch of good to okay ones. I enjoyed Black Boys On Mopeds; this is full of heart and pathos, a good 3/5.
This is good. Really strong, haunting voice, with a lot of range in the songs. Nothing Compares 2 U is the one that everyone knows, but there's a couple of others that are worth listening to as well - Black Boys On Mopeds is one for the anti-English, and The Emperor's New Clothes is much more upbeat in Tempo (and a bit less bleak!). 3/5, not a showstopper but really good.
She didn't deserve to be destroyed for telling the truth. This album is quintessential 90’s. Strings, clean electric and acoustic guitars, banging tight vocals, cheesy at times, heartfelt in a poetic way, melodramatic. It’s well worth the listen. Back half feels tighter, focused, front half is all over the place from the stringed opened to the rhythmic following track to some slow piano/guitar stuff. Still worth it. 90’s soft rock icon ova he’ah.
Mash together half of this album with half of Lion & Cobra and I’d be in love!
2/4 Connors o' connors
Wait a minute, Sinead O’Connor did more outside of “Nothing Compares 2 U”?? Apparently she did, and it’s a haunting album. Her voice is enchanting with its Irish charm and Enya vibes, and the collection of songs on the album is as eclectic as the charms found in a particular breakfast cereal. It’s easy listening, though by the end it feels as though the wheels are falling off and there’s no musical connectivity between tracks. There’s so many stylings, it’s hard to get used to what’s going on, which is too bad.
First listen to a Sinead album, the first song pulls me in gradually and subtly. Then there's a very 1990 hip hop sort of thing. Then we're back to the gorgeous stuff. Then a sort of MOR pop song. The standout track, obviously. It's a mixed bag but in glad I listened to it.
Listened to some Sinead growing up, but was never a huge fan. This album is a good explanation why. Beyond Nothing Compares, none of the songs really stood out to me. She does feel a little ahead of her time as many pop stars these days love the quiet singing like her. Either way, nothing to write home about.
its ok
I really liked the diversity of instruments in the first half of the album. The last few tracks dragged a little but were still decent. Good album, will definitely revisit it sometime!
I haven't listened to much of Sinead O'Connor's music and I don't really know much about her. I of course know the big hits but I'm quite surprised and intrigued by how hypnotic some parts of this album are! It's v rhythmic and almost makes me think of some kind of religious worship or something strangely. I love that you can hear her accent in a lot of the vocals. She seems really cool and I'm glad she's come to my attention through this after I've neglected her so long haha. On the downside, I wouldn't say I found all of this album v exciting. It was great to write job applications to very beautiful sounding and relaxing but some songs got a bit samey.
I listened to this twice to get a good grip of it, I was finding it hard to have an opinion really but what I did like was how varied it was, some songs more upbeat than others. A good mix of pop folk.
Didn't mind it but didn't love it. Can't imagine I'd go back to this any time soon but I guess it had some nice parts.
Not bad. Not what I’m looking for today. Drum beat from stretched on your grave is sick.
One hit wonder who didn't even write her one hit... not a great track record. Not a terrible album, though.
nothing compares 2u is great but the rest of the album is meh
Her voice is great. You can’t go wrong with the material here either, but her previous record had this “I’ve never heard something like this before” This doesn’t have that, nor does it continue that.
7/19/2022 - ALBUM #173 Today's Album: "I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got" by Sinead O’Connor - This album is very much a mixed bag. From the first track Feels so Different, I thought I would have had her pegged as your average 90s alternative artists (like Alanis Morrisette), and the song I Am Stretched on Your Grave pretty much strengthened that idea, if not with a strangely psychedelic twist. However, The Emperor’s New Clothes made me realize that I was listening to an album with much more flex in its sound than I initially thought. Sinead O’Connor is able to capture the sound of many artists spanning a variety of genres and decades and although these ideas don’t always land perfectly, they are given quite a bit of breathing room, respect, and effort when recorded and produced.I will say that much of the sound palette of the album is pretty plain and generic and I wouldn’t necessarily say the songwriting is very creative, but I think there is a decent bit of confidence and charisma in the performances that helps to elevate this album to at least a sub-par standard. There are some standout track among the bunch because of this, but like I alluded to before, much of this album is pretty mediocre. Overall, this album never enters the realm of being straight up bad, but it definitely is an album to pick the hits from and leave the rest. Give this one a listen if you like pretty standard and predictable rock with some decent, if not monotone, female vocals. Highlights: The Emperor’s New Clothes, Nothing Compares 2 U, Jump In The River Score: 6.5/10 Pretty generic 90s alt-rock most of the time with some standout moments here and there
Since I forgot The Emperor’s New Clothes was on this, I’m bumping it up to a 3. But you got lucky this time Sinead!
Only heard half due to time
Nothing compares 2 it
I hadn't heard "Nothing Compares to U" in it's entirety before this, so I enjoyed hearing it in full. The vocals are haunting on the closing track, and I love the singular voice Sinead has!
Some of these songs have themes that feel very of this moment.
As a person, Sinead O' Connor is fascinating. Super smart, very angry and suffering with her own troubles. However, with the exception of the Very Famous Prince Cover, I know her better for the controversies than the music. Well, it was mostly pretty good. Sleeping on Your Grave is really good. Not mind-blowing or anything, but I can see why everyone was excited.
One good song rest bit hit and miss
Nothing compares to nothing compares
There's something about her singing style. Mostly etheral, but it's very forward. It's not so much about her voice as it is the way she chooses to sing. This allows us her to have extreme emotional moments in her music. I also find the accompanying arrangements to be interesting. In the first four songs, we get classical / folk, downtempo, and alt rock (the kind that New Wave evolved into, see Crowded House). It's intentionally repetitive, spotlighting O'Connor's diverse singing styles. I preferred the tracks where O'Connor isn't limited by the instrumentals. "Feel So Different" and "Nothing Compares 2 U" capture her ensnaring style mixed with right level of instrumental. The last 3 songs keep things simple for a solemn folk finish, but I found them to be a bit dull.
Nothing Compares 2 U the only one I knew before. Nice songs, didn’t save any though.
Beautiful and angry voice of her times
I've listened to this album before. I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got is not my favorite album from Sinead O'Connor (check out The Lion and the Cobra). O'Connor's most recognized song is on this album ("Nothing Compares 2 U"), which is a good showcase of her vocal abilities, but it's not a song that keeps my attention well. My favorite song from this album is "The Emperor's New Clothes", which has a strong guitar rhythm backing up the energetically paced vocals. I also like O'Connor's version of the traditional tune "I Am Stretched on Your Grave". All of the songs were at least good, but I don't imagine coming back to the album as a whole.
Meh
It's okay, I have a headache so I kind of needed slower and more mellow music today. Not particularly exciting or memorable. She's clearly talented but this kind of music isn't for me. Also this is my 100th rated album, nice.
3/5 good but not enough
Huikeet vokaalit! 3/5
Dreamy and heartfelt, Sinead's voice is so smooth
One really good song but the rest were kinda average overall
Beatiful, and singer/song in an 80’s way
Best Song: Black Boys on Mopeds. Soft instrumentation with haunting, socially conscious lyrics that still feel relevant. Worst Song: Nothing Compares 2 U. This might just be me punching out against the obviously most famous song on the album, but although sung beautifully, the whole song has this sort of weepy, damsel-in-distress, helplessness that undercuts the strong voice and individuality of the rest of the album. There are better songs about failed relationships on this album. Overall: A fine collection of soft, poignant songs. I would have preferred more of the politically charged songs and fewer of the purely relationship ones.
Mostly unremarkable except for the single.
Bueno, normal
7/10
It was ok
25th November 2021 Listened on my phone while working. Chilled evening. Very dramatic, great voice, tries different vibes throughout and has a stone cold classic in nothing compares. Liked it more than I thought I would.
A couple of belters.
Couple good songs 4 sure
Just alright
Worth the price of admission for 'I Am Stretched On Your Grave' and of course 'Nothing Compares 2 U'. But there’s other highlights like ‘Jump In The River’ and ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’. This album surprised me in a good way despite its unflinchingly raw and personal nature,. I suspect repeated listens over time will make me appreciate it further still.
A good listen!
I know this guy who said this was one of his all-time favorite albums. He played The Emperor's New Clothes so much in his tape deck that it wore thin and started sounding warped. He said Sinead was the cat's meow, the bee's knees. What a pretentious ass. I mean, I don't HATE the album. I just can't for the life of me understand how it made the list. Maybe the list-makers were afraid of being eviscerated on Sinead's come-back performance on SNL. Or maybe they subliminally are giving her props for being a pioneer in cool text verbiage (Nothing Compares 2 U). (Now that I've typed that out, maybe that song is actually a demonic-play-it-backwards homage to Sinead's comrades in Irish music fame...U2 Compares Nothing.) Somehow I find the quality of Sinead's voice to be somewhat reminiscent of kd lang's, which is shocking, given some pretentious ass's opinions of her album on this list. What I will give Sinead is tangentially related to her music, which is that she dared to display a boldness that women in her time had not really gotten away with. Sure, she got blowback for it, and still does. And so to the extent that her fame gives her the platform to highlight issues that matter to her, more power to her. But what her message offers in wisdom is lost in its immature delivery. When songs from this album come on, I won't change the station, but I won't go looking for it, either.
Pretty good, NC2U is easily best
Absolutely belongs for for Nothing Compares 2 U. One of the best vocal takes ever cut to a record. The rest is... honestly interesting, but not highly repeatable for me.
Incredibly powerful voice. Good songs, but only a couple of real great ones.
Lento. Melódico. Aburrido.
90s Memories! Like the sound of her voice.
Solides Album, 3.
I didn't expect so many pop tracks. Otherwise quite okay. Her voice is really beautiful. (6/10) Favorite Tracks: The Emperor's New Clothes, Nothing Compares 2 U
Some decent songs on here, but Nothing Compares is the biggie. Not many of the other songs come close to its quality. I am stretched... is a decent shout, album itself is what you would expect based on her standout song.
Thanks for the invite! This was my first album in the queue. Tremendous vocals. Not a go to artist in my arsenal but nevertheless enjoyed going through it. I am transported to a city I just travelled to and arrived at and its midday but not pleasant weather and I am in an empty dark pub waiting on an old friend to meet up who I haven't seen in awhile.
great for sampling
okay, not my favorite sound.
Some good tunes, some bland ones. Best track: Nothing Compares 2 U
It's good, I can't deny that, but I never aligned with O'Connor. Other than that one truly excellent song, of course.
'Nothing compare 2 U' is een redelijk poppy nummer. De rest is wat minder toegankelijk, maar niet minder mooi. Maar toch niet 100% mijn ding
false
I was surprised that I actually enjoyed this up until nothing compares 2 u, after that there were songs that didn't fit on the same album and it fell flat. Enough on there to enjoy though 3*
I did not expect to enjoy this. But I did! No idea what she is singing half the time but was enjoyable.
I can see how/why this would be such a groundbreaking album upon release. Behind its chart topping Nothing Compares 2U, this album was a smash success for its time. I do feel like it paved the way for artists like Tori Amos, who in my opinion, did this genre way better. But it wasn’t a bad listen at all. One of those I have always meant to get around to, but never thought I would.
I like the slower acoustic sounds. Her voice is better suited to that.
"Jump in the River" Released: October 1988[3] "Nothing Compares 2 U" Released: 8 January 1990 "The Emperor's New Clothes" Released: 5 June 1990 "Three Babies" Released: 17 December 1990
Some nice tracks, but not to consider it a great album.
I respect the heartfelt emotion and honesty but this is not something I would choose to listen to on my own.
Kinda all over the place tonally. Couple of good tracks but not for me.
hrmleg
Two songs I liked enough to save, some songs were plain weird though, I think one or two more good songs would’ve bumped this up!
One of the albums I felt familiar with but really it was just the all-pervasiveness of the Prince cover for a time. I don't think the rest of it actually measured up to that mark.
Nothing Compares is certainly one of the best Prince covers out there. The album as a whole is a bit too dramatic for me to want to return to.
It's ok. She's not a bad singer but it is what it is.
Kinda boring. 2.5 rounded up.
A bit of traditional influence on I am stretched to your grave, which I appreciated. I don't think I've ever listened to Sinead before. Overall a few slow and dreamy songs and then some upbeat 90s alt/pop? if you're into that. A bit slow at the end.
Nothing compares 2 U é o hino dela, o resto é OK.
I liked some songs a lot. But most of it was not for me.
She's got a voice, she does say something very real on Black Boys on Mopeds, but for the most part, it's a bit too limp for me to get all the hype. The hype seems to be that she was harassed by a bunch of first world conservative frauds and I suppose for that she has my sympathy.
It pretty good synthpop, but I was not super crazy about all the songs. As a first experience to Sinead's work I think this left me wanting to check out more which is a win in my book
Heard it before. It's funny that Nothing Compares 2 U is Sinead's biggest hit because it almost doesn't fit among other songs on the album. And to be frank other than this song I didn't feel strongly about many songs on the album, almost got bored even. I hope Lion and the Cobra is on the list too because I'm gonna rate that one higher 2/5
I really wanted to like this, the lore surrounding Sinēad is badass. Just really not my sort of music unfortunately
Her voice-range, tone, & control-are all really good. But overall, the album is boring. Nothing I’ll come back to
Maso
O'Connor was amazing for standing up to the wicked Catholic Church despite the deleterious effects on her career. Album is a snoozefest though
Sinead has a great voice, and I like the very limited amount of the more upbeat arrangements on here, but most of this is way too adult contemporary for me.
Nothing Compares 2 U is a quintessential 90s song, but the drop off to the next good song is monumental. I Do Not Want stood out I guess, but I didn't like the rest of the album. Nothing Compares might have kept this from being a 1. 2/5
i enjoyed two of the songs and there was a third i didnt hate. the rest i found to be a slog to get through. it doesn't help that every song but one was several minutes too long.
Besides "Nothing Compares 2 U" (what an 80s way to spell the title for a 90s song), every one of the other tracks bleeds into the next.
She does not seem like a lot of fun to hang out with.
This poor woman had a difficult life and a beautiful voice. The album very much a proud of its time and place.
Very dull. Listen to Nothing Compares 2 U and move on.
What's with the obsession over starting indie (or indie-adjacent) albums with sombre or contemplative ballads? Feels So Different is solid, but it's low energy and doesn't excite me for what's to come. It would work better as a closer, or a sophomore track. But instead, this song is many people's first-ever experience with Sinéad O'Connor, and when designing albums you need to take that into account. Even I Am Stretched On Your Grave, while a bit monotonous in its own right, would make for a better opener, with that funky bass tone and presence of genuine percussion. Also, the Irish-folky fiddle at the end is pretty sweet – though again melodically repetitive. Three Babies... what can I say? Not much. One chord played unwaveringly on the strings for almost five minutes, and a melody that doesn't really go anyway and expresses one flat emotion. Worrying, perhaps, for the prospects of later tracks. The Emperor's New Clothes is the first song I'm convinced by. Very 80s-pop inspired, including the slick, synthy production we've come to love/hate, but the musicianship and actual composition is still a little limited (aside from O'Connor's voice, which is obviously fantastic). At this point I wonder if I should be paying attention to lyrics – I almost never do, unless they're horrendously bad. Black Boys On Mopeds is fine – an innocuous acoustic guitar ballad without any particularly convincing hook, melody, beat, or textural/mood change within a track. That's something all of these songs lack so far, actually. Nothing Compares 2 U is pretty good. Easy to see why it became the hit single. Engaging semi-indie-rock texture that doesn't really let up for the whole 4:40. Probably, this earns style points for being recognisable and influential more than anything else. It's a little underwhelming from a musical point of view. That being said, it towers over the rest of side 2, including the relentlessly bland Jump In The River and title track. I'm hovering between a 2 and a 3, but bumping it down here feels correct to counterbalance all the positive reviews. This record hinges mainly on Nothing Compares 2 U's success and it certainly wouldn't be on the list otherwise. Note: I love Sinéad O'Connor as a figure in music, but (as I've discovered) I don't really love her music in isolation. 2/5 Key tracks: The Emperor's New Clothes, Nothing Compares 2 U
Sorry, to mellow for my taste even if music and singing is good, but just not for me
Absolute snoozer of a pop album.
it's good but i feel a little meh on it so far at the beginning. wouldve skipped a bunch of these tracks cause they were just fine. really besides nothing compares 2 u i found it pretty boring.
- 10 Hate this, howling vocals in front of pretty annoying beat. Few songs were alright.
I enjoyed this when I was a little kid. Now I find it rather dull.
I don’t think it was ever gonna be for me. And hey, that’s okay
It’s not my cup of tea, but I liked the song “jump in the river”
It is pretty dull
A unique talent and haunting voice. This follow up album to her excellent debut, though just isn’t very compelling. Without Prince’s song this album would be totally forgettable.
Don;t think I've ever listened to one of her albums before. Not bad, did not like the title song at the end, but the rest of it was okay. I can tell you this ... I won't be coming back to it, or seeking out more of her albums. Just didn't do it for me.
Standouts Nothing Compares 2 U
Not my cup of tea. I skipped through a lot of the songs because they didn’t grab me
Beautiful voice, but the music didn't really do much for me. Favorite track: Nothing Compares 2 U
Bit of a snoozer, this one.
Yeah this one just passed by. There is of course one big hit on here but other than that no songs really stuck with me after listening to it. 2/5
She sang. There were instruments. She had a few moments of this is ok.
Quite unlike anything I’ve ever heard. And not necessarily in a good way.
A product of my generation I’m ashamed to say. She looked at life and chose Nihilism. She hated everyone and everything including herself. Her vocals aren’t really great, just mid-range, and her game is attributable to her shock value (shaved head and alluring eyes) and he willingness to attack the establishment. She was a nut case from beginning to end, and she helped a generation learn to hate themselves too. The world is better for her passing.
Notable Songzeile: And I'm not going to change my mind Just because of what they said The worm has laid eggs in their hearts But not in my head Wenn ein Album mit einem Gebet anfängt macht mich das eher skeptisch. Sorry.
Didn’t care for it tbh
Really enjoyed the vocals. The songwriting: not so much
Not really my style
Ho hum
Not bad Irish singing. But not my style and pretty boring. The Irish have a voice that's a little too abrasive for me
Kinda boring protest music. Didn't love it.
I get it. I really do. But I don't like it at all.
its fine
More like 2.5 I wanted to like it because she did a protest thing on SNL that she was panned for, but it was just kinda mostly slow and boring or long and baleful. I read some stuff about her, and she’s pretty interesting as a person. There were a couple good songs, but not enough to overcome the boring stuff
..
Really isn’t my thing
Not my thing but I'm glad to have given it a try, this album is something I would've never discovered on my own without this project
sinead. girl. nothing compares 2 u expanding one decent song into an entire album of empty, lifeless, stripped down tracks. i do not want what i have got here.
Pretty lackluster overall. One memorable song, some not even enjoyable to listen to. 2.9
Good voice but not a good song writer
Ruim e eu escutei umas 3 músicas no máximo. Parece trilha sonora de filme
Sabe aquela coxinha fria e gordurosa?
Sinéad O'Connor is one of those artists that I appreciate more than enjoy actually listening to. Some quality stuff here, but rarely something I will seek out on my own.
great single, just didn't feel much for the rest of the album
That went on way too long. Really need to be in a mood to consider this a must listen to and nowhere near that mood. Hated that it kept going but I'll give it a little benefit of the doubt
Not as bad as I thought at the beginning and Nothing Compares to You is a classic, but this really isn't my thing.
I do not want what I haven't gotten from this album. Distinct voice and good music, that except for a few songs of note, bored me.
Not really my thing and I didn't really like it very much, other than one track that I like another artist's version of.
At times personal and plaintive, at others scathingly political, but at no time musically gripping—even on the famous hit, which is somehow better performed by just about anyone of note paying tribute.
“The Emperor’s New Clothes” is the best song on the album. “Nothing Compares” was killed by radio overplay. I can’t get through the last song, “I Do Not Want” … Her first album (The Lion and the Cobra) was a favorite; this, not so much.
eh
Not my cup of tea, but not quite in the harbour.
Meh
Hey it's got one really good song, the rest is a little too preachy and breathy for my taste.
I hated this, even her best songs are pretty ass despite her voice being nice
Nice instrumentals and production. But no my cup of tea... i guess
Hard to judge this album. Sinéads voice is beautiful and very pleasant to listen to but I also felt like some of the songs were not really thought through. The more 80s disco pop vibey songs felt like a slap to the face after calmer more intimate songs. I don't think I would listen to this whole album voluntarily but some of the songs I definitely would. The whole albums rating therefore is 2/5. Best song was I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got.
Aside from Nothing Compares 2U (which I heard way too many times on the 6th form college jukebox in the 90s) .. nothing stood out. It was fine but I thought I’d enjoy it more.
didn’t like it it was too long and boring but it was the album I got for the day so I tried a few songs and just couldn’t get through it 😭
109/1001 First listen. Really thought this was going to surprise me with how good it was. Nothing caught my ear on this one other than the big single which seems out of place hearing the rest of the album. I’m certainly not the target market for this album though. I did give the prince version a go and it was pretty clunky so she did a great job fixing that one up. 4/10
I know this album had a lot of credit for its day, but I did not enjoy it as much.
Interesting album. I enjoyed the variety of song types but have heard other Sinead O'Connor albums that I enjoy more.
It’s fine, just fine
This wasn't all bad, but I am also not a huge Sinead fan.
This has gotta be somebody's favorite album of all time. Probably several people's. But this one went way over my head, or maybe just missed my mark. I can hear the anger in O'Connor's lyrics, and can understand the emotion on paper, but none if it is translating to me through the music. Even the renowned cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U" left me completely unaffected. Maybe this one warrants a re-listen in a different mindset, but as it stands I don't see myself remembering much from this album an hour from now.
I admire her activism. Her music, not as much.
not my vibe
Sorry Sinead, you were great but at this point you sound a bit dated.
I'm not really getting anything out of this album
eh. probably big in the 90s. 2/5
Seems very middle of the road really. Nothing of note when it comes to the instrumentation, and her lyrics are quite heavy handed. Not for me. Best Tracks: - N/A Worst Tracks: - Black Boys On Mopeds Rating: 4/10
I've never interacted with Sinead's music prior to this, and only heard how amazing and groundbreaking it is. I don't see it. It sounds generic, and I got bored listening to it.
i do not want to listen to this again 2/5
Gear: Fostex TH610 Artwork: 👁️🎱📸 Production: 📈👂😖 Music: 🙏🚫✊ Rating: 🪆🪆(🪆)/5
Nothing Compares 2 U outshines everything else on this album so much it's embarassing. The rest... not annoying but I don't wanna hear it again. NC2U not enough to give 3.
This album feels so different to most other albums because the music is aggravatingly boring and O'Connor's vocals are woefully unimpressive, despite sounding like she has more to give. Listening to the whole thing in one sitting felt like being stretched on a grave that I would rather simply inhabit to avoid hearing more of this music. Truly, three babies could make a better album than this. Perhaps if O'Connor had stepped further out of her box and tried the emperor's new clothes she would have developed a more unique and interesting sound than the generic 90's grade school classroom-sound of this album. The decade of the 90's features such a great variety of fantastic musical talent, much of it made by black boys on mopeds, and I would think that O'Connor might have used some of it to influence her sound on this album. But alas, the only influence on this album was a cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U, so no original O'Connor creation warranted much popularity. It would have been more invigorating to jump in the river, an activity that would, at least, cause as much sorrow as enduring O'Connor's uninspired musical vision. I'd never met Sinead O'Connor, but I really hope that the sole experience of hearing this album marks the last day of our acquaintance. I don't have any Sinead O'Connor albums in my collection, so I find it true that I do not want what I haven't got.
I think this isn't the right time for this album for me. I didn't anticipate entirely slow, ballad-y songs.
Not engaging enough Sinead,
Prince lifts this album to a 2
Like female lead pop rock but with a dash of Christmas music sound even though the content has nothing to do with Christmas so it just feels..? I struggled through this. I can hear this bridging gaps between the 80s and 90s. Her voice on its own is very pretty a lot of the time. Otherwise, the whole of the project is just a no for me. 1.6/5
1 good song
She’s super talented but it’s just not my cup of tea
Undeniable beautiful voice. The late 80s/early 90s music is a trip down memory lane.
Difficult backstory aside, I'm just not a fan of her music (famous single included).
Good
I actually found this quite boring. Her lilting haunting hooting almost sent me to sleep a few times. Not ideal when driving. Nothing Compares 2 U is a tuuuuuune though.
Not really my cup of tea. It's very dramatic in a way I find kind of irritating
Dentist rock at its finest.
I did not really like this. It kinda felt like elevator music. Definitely was not my favorite. Shes a good singer, but it is fine. Liked Songs: "Three Babies" , "The Emperor's New Clothes" , "Black Boys on Mopeds" , "Nothing Compares 2 U"
Nothing about this is particularly impressive? It's just a lot, but not a lot of anything.
I can see how influential this was, and what artists were inspired by this. It wasn’t something I’d listen to again but glad I listening to it- pretty good tracks on it but didn’t enjoy the entire album
Meh not a huge fan
2 not for me
one great song and a bunch of mediocre ones...don't know how this was even included in this list.......actually haven't really enjoyed this list at all so far
It's okay. Not really my jam, but she definitely had talent. Without 'Nothing Compares 2 U' this might be a 1 from me.
Idk. Not bad. But I thought I had already listened to it but it was KD Lang I had heard.
Not terrible.
She had a great voice, and some good writing, but not really my thing.
Not really for me
Have avoided Sinead O'Connor (except via her collaboration with Jah Wobble) because of the most annoyingly, over played song in the history of music, in an era where you had to listen to what was on a limited number of radio stations. With the ability to skip NC2U, the rest of the album had a couple of decent Celtic-tinged tracks, some dreary ballads, and some forgettable numbers. Overall, listenable. Lose one star for the awful, whiney elevator ballad. (Not Prince's finest moment, though his version is palatable-ish).
Not my thing
Really didn't like this 😭
This one just didn't connect with me. It was too bare or something. There was one song I really liked... turns out it was written by some other guy. Prince I think his name was. Wonder if he has any other good songs.
The album goes on quite a lot, Clearly, Each ballad in tears was wrought, With the same mournful tone, One long, droning moan… By track ten, you wish you were not.
Thought I'd like this a lot more
I never really liked her music a whole lot. I still feel that way
Do not like the voice and lyrics
Kommer nog aldrig spela den igen.
Very blurghh
Feels like a two — easy listening but not for me
O'Connor's performance of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" is stellar as she powers through a set of lyrics that are simultaneously sublime and dopey. The rest of the album is mostly generic alt rock ("Jump In The River", "The Emperor's New Clothes"), peppered with some dull acoustic guitar tracks, the odd percussion 'n' vocals experiment ("I Am Stretched On Your Grave") and the tedious album-closing a cappella title track. Guest musicians on the album include key post-punk figures like Marco Pirroni and Jah Wobble, to little sonic effect, though. Lyrically, O'Connor engages in a lot of sanctimonious finger-pointing gets tiring over the course of the album.
The occasional fun pop song saved this from being a 1. But the majority of this album is dreadful
As someone who hates this type of music, I didn't hate it! Although she does some yodeling, the emotion she injects feels mostly genuine. And the backing instrumentals feel well-composed, not just background for her vocals.
2 maudlin 4 me
Gibt mir leider so gar nichts.
