Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Resident sleeper. only gets a 2 because apparently she owned the catholic church

ibland ganska kul och bra men för det mesta tråkigt och jag gillar inte soundet på instrumenten så mycket.

Man vill ju gilla detta mer än vad man gör...

Meh 🤷‍♂️ though tbh I wasn’t super actively listening

My favourite reggae artist? That would have to be Sinead O'Connor.

Not for me

I feel like this one didn't really have a discernable identity, and the slow pace didn't make it easier to digest

Not really my thing. Takes a while tto get going. 2/5

I liked the voice in some songs but the lyrics are kinda random at times. The music is all over the place as well. Not something I'd revisit.

Meh. I think if it wasn't for her anti Catholic tirade on SNL nobody would remember this woman's name or give her music a second thought.

Shakes itself up too much for me to stay invested.

I really enjoyed 'Last Day of Our Acquaintance' but I didn't understand the appeal of the whole album

Come on seriously. Not another one. Not what I want to listen to. One album of hers maybe should be on this list There are so many great artist and albums out there This is not one of them. Not sure if I can continue with this I was looking forward to this list now I dread looking to see my next album and hope to be mildly surprised

Very meh

Just not my style. Overproduced. Violins make me cringe. I am sorry she suffered in her life. Her eyes are indeed haunting esp. given the traumatic future.

Difficult to listen to. If it wasn't for the one prince cover then it would be a 1star.

90’er folkrock, stille og roligt, lidt trist

I liked the first song

It was good but a little boring

Good singer/artist. Got blackballed for her beliefs. Sad.

Stories of 90’s Ireland, Nothing Compares stands out , but enjoyed the last days….

Sinead O'Connor has probably been unfairly largely only known by people (musically) for the track 'Nothing Compares 2 U', as she has plenty to say on the other tracks here. Sadly, it doesn't matter how good your message or intentions are if the songs are all a bit boring and uninspiring to listen to.

Beautiful voice. Dreadfully sad album. Occassional poppy music beds. Folksy.

She does have a great voice and I like the politics where it's dotted in there. Doesn't stand out massively for me though

Sinead O’Connor seemed quite annoying based on the media coverage, but an okay album anyway

Velloo ja värisee, kiteytyy keskellä lyyrisesti Black Boys on Mopeds:iin ja musiikillisesti Prince-coveriin, ja kaiken kaikkiaan melkein onnistuu. 2+

She was kind of sucky

Not for me. She has a beautiful voice, but this is too melancholy for my taste in music.

I'm on the fence about overly-political artists. Part of me thinks, stick to making music, but another part sees the purpose of using a platform to highlight well-informed ideas. Sinead's politics impacted her career and her mental health negatively, but her music positively. Saying that, Nothing Compares 2 U is by far the best track on the album, her best ever (I also like Troy from The Lion and the Cobra). Slightly too much wailing and some dated production.

She's got a great voice but I didn't like much else about the album. I was just not in the mood for such a sad album. Gets an extra star just for "Nothing Compares 2 U" which is sensational. Highlights: The Emperor's New Clothes Nothing Compares 2 U

I like the variation in feel between tracks, but honestly not a whole lot stood out to me here

I think sublime stole a drum beat from Sinead O'Connor... "I am Stretched on Your Grave" drum beat is the same as Sublime "What I got". That threw me off for a min. Not a great album for me. Seems decently produced. I'm sure she is just enough damaged for some people to like it but I'm not the audience.

snooooooze. I think it's pretty telling that her most successful single (Nothing Compares 2 U) is a cover. Her next highest praise in the Wikipedia page is that "The single 'Emperor's New Clothes' found moderate success". I usually reserve 1 star for things that are arguably not music. This is a low 2. We are talking 1.5000001 stars.

RIP Was about to walk down rub a dub square when I heard I Am Stretched On Your Grave! Fun to hear that. Black Boys on Mopeds randomly reminds me of Bo Burnham. I think it’s That Funny Feeling. Must just be similar chords or something. Nothing Compares 2 U is probably her most famous song and a pretty good one at that. Overall I don’t have much love for these songs. Most have a lame 80s sound and are emotionally draining but I can certainly recognize the power behind some of these. High 2.

Nothing compares and Feel so different

An ok album, nothing upbeat. High 2.

I didn't care for her style.

This ones not for me. She is a talented singer but I cant stand her voice. Im not a fan of music that focuses so heavily on the vocals and it feels like it leaves the rest of the instruments behind. This isnt a sound that works for me. 2 stars

Didn't like it

Nice, pleasant, but nothing that really spoke to or moved me.

Found out it was a prince cover but there is a really good track on here. Couple other ok ones, but really not by jam.

Sinead must have been fun at parties. Had its moments but was a slog for the most part.

One good song. 2/5

Very good voice but the music was drab at times. Better than Moby though.

A bit boring other than Nothing Compares 2 You

2 Nur nothing compares 2 u is gute, rest depri

Ikonischer Song "Nothing Compares 2 U". Das gesamte Album würde ich mir aber so nicht anhören. 4.3/10

I get why she’s an icon but I just don’t vibe with her, unfortunately.

I just couldn't get into this. Felt like the last of that 80s sound where music already had moved on to other places. Sure Nothing Compares 2 U is great but the rest was not something I enjoyed.

Starke Stimme, aber das Album hebt mich nicht an.

Ok this is not as fearsome as much of her work, still at this point making major label music. Not sure I would listen again, but got to the end. is it three stars? Not quite. 2.5.

The slow singing is probably meant to be spherical and emotional. Sadly it is mostly boring and monotonous. Surely there are good parts but not enough to actually entertain.

The Emperor's New Clothes is kinda dope

Ehhh. So, I can hear the influence of this kind of think on stuff I do like, like fever ray in particular, especially as the album reached it's back half, but the basic truth of the matter is that, before this, the only Sinead O'Connor song I liked was her cover of \"oro se dovath\" or however your spell that in Irish (I usually just put in 'oro' and whatever search engine I'm using does the rest), and after listening to this album, that's still true. There were a couple of tracks I was alright with, Nothing Compares 2 U was okay despite the awful title, and Emperor's New Clothes. Basically, I thought the back half was much better than the front, overall. So, I'm rating these based on how likely I am to listen to it again, and that being the case, this gets a 1/5 - sorry.

Can see the talent, but it all sounds the same to me. Just not my style

Man I have a weird reaction to late 80s - early 90s pop. I’m not a fan of pop in general, and I came of age in the early 2000s so a good signpost for pop was the lack of 4 part band. This means instinctively I react well to pop from the previous generation, but the more I listen the less I care about it. The same happened here.

A two disc album, what a treat ! Including a Christmas song . Bit of a mixed bag

Yeah it's got that one song.

Après avoir croisé la route de la pire intro du générateur avec Metal Box de Public Image Ltd, nous voici confrontés à la pire outro avec le morceau éponyme. Tout bonnement insupportable.

really didn't enjoy this album

Es una pena la pérdida de una artista del calibre de Sinéad O'Connor. Este segundo disco, sin embargo, palidece en comparación con su álbum debut.

yeah nah mate

Well, I'm not convinced. While it's never aggravating, there just wasn't much too like about this album. What may have seem fresh in 1990, feels contrived and unsatisfying now. The vocals are too sing-song and the sparse arrangement make the music sound quite weak as a whole, not to mention the super tinny drums.

Well, yes the hit is good. The Tatcher bashing is also good, but the rest of the record is rather grating. Had a hard time slogging through the entire length of it.

Nothing compares to that all-time famous cover of Prince in this sophomore album. The first track, "Feel So Different", has aged pretty well, thanks to its barebones string instrumentation. Yet it's too damn long, like a lot of other cuts from this LP. By the time you finally get to an interesting hook at the end of that opener, you just want the damn thing to be over. Equally long is "I Am Stretched On Your Grave", and this time, the instrumentation is pretty dated. O'Connor and her producers thought that using a classic hip hop loop (borrowed from James Brown's "Funky Drummer"--how original...) as background for a 17th century poem put to music by an Irish folk revivalist... would be a pretty neat idea. Newsflash: the end result is quite awkward--probably because the recipe is lacking key ingredients, such as interesting arrangements and other instrumental flourishes. Anything that could help the tune get out of the self-indulgent zone. Mixing things up--mingling different styles and atmospheres--requires some thought. But it's nowhere to be seen here. Speaking of "awkward", there's usually something wrong with the lyrics as well in this record. Sinead's heart is in the right place when she wants to tackle topical issues between the expected romantic tunes. The thing is, her conversational sort of songwriting often falls flat--there's no breadth, few striking images, and almost no "soul" to speak of. Being "conversational" can yield nice results sometimes, but not in here. You often end up wondering what it is that O'Connor really means to say. Once again, such accomplishments require some thought. Apart from that, "Jump In The River" is a pretty decent rock track, and, well, "Nothing Compares 2 U" slaps, of course. But the rest is either awfully dated when it comes to sounds and moods ("The Emperor's New Clothes", "Black Boys On Mopeds"), or it just drones and slumbers (the three last tracks, for instance, whose titles I'm not even bother quoting...). 2/5 for the purposes of this list, which translates to a 7/10 grade for more general artistry and musicianship overall. Next, please... Number of albums left to review: 541 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 221 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 107 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 133 (including this one)

Not my favorite. I know it was a big album, but it doesn’t do anything for me.

I was expecting to be blown away, like an even more powerful Carol King, but it was just a whimper really.

Får flashbacks til engelskleksene i 5. klasse når me måtte oversetta teksten til Nothing compares 2 u, og eg ikkje visste ka compares betydde

I have no idea what was going on or what she was going for with this

I'll not lie. When I started this album, I didn't think I was going to finish it. The first couple of tracks are just dismal. The best one can say is that it becomes tolerable during the middle tracks, before ending up on a dirge of a track that I, yep, skipped. Incredibly, this album came directly after Prince's Sign 'O' The Times, and in my review of that I suggested how almost all Prince music as a certain Princey quality that makes it unmistakably Prince. Nothing Compares 2 U is unmistakably Prince. Even down to the number & letter. I mean, it's by far and away the standout track on this album, so I guess we can conclude that I don't really rate Sinead O'Connor all that much. Nevermind though eh, it's not like my opinion counts for anything.

The last song was a struggle to get through but the rest was ok

Not for me sorry

Bit boring and annoying

Album is straight trash outside of 1 song. Nothing Compares 2 U is such a banger. Got to give this a 2 just from that one song.

This is really not my cup of Guinness. Nothing Compares 2 U dragged this from the depths of a Juan

One of the more tedious albums on this list. It's only 50 minutes long, but it wore me down. Go be mad at the Pope and leave the rest of us alone. Best track: Nothing Compares 2 U

50 minutes that felt like 7 hours and 15 days.

Decent sounding album

zzzzzzz

One great song, couple interesting, irish-style songs and not much else. I think that might be a reason why I know Sinead O'Connor more from non-artistic movements than music. It's not my style, even though Sinead proves times and times again, that she has beautiful voice and has an idea for herself. Unfortunately, other than "Nothing Compares 2U" (which was originally written by Prince, didn't know that) and Irish folk song "I am stretched on your Grave" I haven't found anything that would bring me back to this album.

Not for me

The Disney production on the opening tracks gave this a gloss that it didn't really need. Sinead always works best when she is being raw and honest. The Soul II Soul funky drummer beats were a surprise on I Am Stretched. Nothing Compares can pull at the heartstrings. She didn't half warble for the final third.

It's whatever, idc, not great not bad, meh, 2, a solid 2, like not bad, but it's not quite for me, had some ight stuff.

I don’t want Irish singers bro.

Other than the Prince song this was ok at best

I think the lyrics are probably pretty decent but it was quite boring. Also whenever Prince does a song it is pretty much his forever so I really couldn’t get into Nothing Compares 2 U. 4/10

Great voice. Didnt care for hat much Sinead

first impressions : irish queen; 90s pop, interesting; shes very pretty, the cover looks very dramatic and i like her eyes; the emperor's new clothes is a good title :DD; title track at the end .. suspenseful; track 6 is a classic after listening : as the cover suggests, it was very dramatic (in no way a bad thing btw, lyrically it was pretty deep), i liked the upbeat ones more than the slower ones, has some epic instrumental parts, especially guitar-wise, i like her voice, a capella was cool :) favourite song(s) : i am stretched on your grave, the emperor's new clothes, jump in the river rating : some that i really liked but over all not a style i would listen to very often, overall enjoyed it but as i would need to be in the mood and only really listen to a few, i'm going 2/5 (again, a sin i'M SORRY, purely based off of personal preference and how it sounds to my ears)

One good song the rest is incredibly average.

Disappointing- I like her voice and the Prince interpretation is amazing, but I only really liked Emperor’s New Clothes of the rest (and the funky drummer sample).

Slow and melodic. Not really my thing

It's a bit pretentious for what boils down to a basic, ho-hum pop album isn't it? Was going to give it a middling 3-star review but the sheer cheek of Sinéad acting like a protest artist but then putting out bland, generic pop took off another star.

Fanns väl två lyssningsbara låtar och då pratar jag inte om hennes stora hit som är pissdålig. Har inte mycket till övers för henne. Blir en svag tvåa och det beror enbart på att just de två låtar jag nämnde som gick att lyssna på.

This album is Ok. I was familiar with one song. I feel like the reason this album is on list is mainly for Nothing Compares 2 U. It is a good song; however Prince's version is way better. Some of the songs are a bit long and uninspiring. I wouldn't listen to the album again. Even though Nothing Compares 2 U is good, the rest not so much. It might be slightly better than a 2 but I will round down.

Disappointed with this one. "Nothing Compares 2 U" is amazing (thanks in no small part to the guy who wrote it, the obscure musician known as Prince), but O'Connor's fantastic voice couldn't save an otherwise unmemorable album. Both stars are for Prince.

Can't give this more than a 2. The first few tracks are so dull I struggled to make it through. Massive song in the middle is brilliant of course. A Spotify bug means the last track is actually the penultimate track repeated.

Seems like a cool person but this album was kinda boring.

Background okay - as a focus it’s a bit meh. Chosen for just the one song me thinks.

Probably would have been a 4 if I was high

One good song, the rest is boring

Not really for me I think

Not bad by any means, but it is certainly too melodramatic and dated for my tastes. Didn’t really age well.

Nothing compares 2 U is a great song, but the rest of the album didn’t do it for me..

Rubbish. Nothing Compares shines like a diamond in shit. Well, last couple of tracks aren't too bad but the rest is whining, preachy mediocrity.

pretty but meh

Eh, it wasn't horrible. It didn't interest me very much, some exciting lyrics, but that's it. Kinda sad when the best song on the album is a cover.

This was quite boring, honestly. I didn't hate it, but I don't see myself ever listening to this again.

Emotionally powerful and great vocals but really not my thing

her voice is beautiful, but this was boring

Not for me

O'Connor seems to sample every hot genre of the 90s in this one, running over the bombastic pop ballad, trip-hop piece, and standard britpop rocker just to name a few. Some are executed better than others (a few even to a T!), but the lack of a consistent theme means this feels less an album and more a dartboard of musical experiments.

Well Sinead O'Rebellion! Shock me shock me with that deviant behavior! Sinead does have a unique voice & I love Irish dialect. I recognize & appreciate the anguish that went into the album, it would be a good one if you ever need something to listen to during an ugly cry session. My highlights Feels So Different love love love the strings I Am Stretched On Your Grave is my fave of the album Nothing Compares is a classic of course, there's a reason that song has been so overplayed If I'm being honest a big highlight was when it was over.

Not really my type of album. The singer songwriter style of the 90s was really hit and miss. A couple songs were ok. The singing is not bad. Just not my stuff. 3.7/10

Ehhh, some cool songs. Most were pretty forgettable. Listened to this on a long drive and it made the drive longer. Some talented songwriting, but not for me.

It wasn’t bad but I just don’t like her which is a bit unfair really. 2*

Grew on me but...

Besides the obvious hit, a very droll album

Boring...

“I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got” by Sinéad O’Connor (1990) It’s hard to think of Sinéad O’Connor without recalling the infamous SNL incident where she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II. This act was (as demonstrated in her alteration of the lyrics of Bob Marley’s “War”) intended to be a protest against the “child abuse” in the Roman Catholic Church. It was mostly lost on a stunned public (and now of course we know that her concern was baseless, right?). Well, the stunt flopped and, worse, it was bad art. But that 1992 event is not what this 1990 album is about, so let us remain focused. These intensely self-reflective songs are awkwardly transparent, producing within the listener a strong dose of detrimental empathy, where the art is obstructed by our feelings for the artist. With a voice marred by excess airiness and a struggle for control, she nonetheless evokes strong feeling. And that feeling is disordered by the extraordinarily painful but limited scope of her 24-year-old soul. The album’s theme is highly, uncomfortably personal, lamenting her recent divorce (“The Emperor’s New Clothes”, “Last Day of Our Acquaintance”) and the haunting affection/grief for the three children she had aborted (“Three Babies”). Her social protest (“Black Boys on Mopeds”) misses the mark by drawing an overly strained moral equivalence between Margaret Thatcher and the Chinese autocrats overlooking Tiananmen Square. It’s overwrought, and it dangerously invites an even worse reaction. Effective protest songs should avoid such recklessness. She’d have been well advised to learn from Bob Dylan’s more respectable work. On the plus side, there is an embrace of serenity (“Feels So Different” opens with Reinhold Niebuhr’s “Serenity Prayer”) and contentment (the title track “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got”). Nevertheless there is something tentative about the redemption she experiences. She sings as if matters are settled, which of course, they aren’t, and cannot be. Even if this album is emotionally on target, it lacks maturity. There are so many caveats and distractions that ultimately it does not succeed. Too bad. 2/5

Not my cup of tea...ya know?

It was okay. It belongs somewhere on a playlist titled "Sad 90's"

exhausting most of the time, good in parts at best

Not particularly my cup of tea

Coffee shop music

Hollow and empty musically, it’s hauntingly beautiful but hard to get through

Slow, not a big fan

Niet meteen voor mij.

dull- only stand out song written by Prince and even he was happy to give that away.

Da isses wieder - der Überhit und das dazugehörige Album. Was mir beim Kometenschweif Don MacLeans „American Pie“ noch gut gefiel, langweilt mich hier auf hohem Niveau. Immerhin 1.5

I really only like Nothing Compares 2 U and Black Boys on Mopeds. The rest is good singing but those are the only special songs to me.

Very mixed feelings on this one. 30/70 lite to dislike. Couple songs were great, didn’t enjoy the rest.

regular

AMAZING vocals, and I dig the music as far as 90s style goes, however the lyrics are sometimes a lot to handle. I liked the experience of hearing more of SO's music, after only really knowing Nothing Compares 2 U Highlights: -The Emperor's New Clothes -Nothing Compares 2 U -Last Day Of Our Acquaintance

It was a pretty solid album. I don’t know if it’s something I’ll ever listen to again but overall I liked almost every song I listened to.

Voz realmente única. Lembra o timbre da Dolores e da Bjork. Nothing Compares 2 U é a melhor disparada, mas as duas primeiras são muito boas também

Boring and tbh not sure why it’s here

I've heard the big hit on this but kinda interested to know what the rest sounds like. Ok it's basically a mix of pop and kinda new world type stuff. Not much substance. And it turns out the big song was a Prince cover. 2/5.

I had high hopes for this considering Fiona Apple is a huge fan, but this is very disappointing. It sounded very messy and didn’t have any impact.

Quite samey. Was very melancholy all the way through. Not a Saturday vibe for me at all.

A great voice, but not an album I'll be rushing to listen to again

parei pra escutar esse de noite na varanda, presenciei uma pessoa tirando a própria vida enquanto tocava jump in the river xDDDDD eu to intensamente afetado por conta disso e não terminei o álbum (tb não consegui dormir desde então) até onde eu escutei, achei meio chato

Honestly, the one hit is great. The rest was filler noise to me. I just couldn't get into whatever Vibe this was supposed to be about.

But like.....what else is about it? Yeah she's a good singer but the only reason this isn't all immediately forgettable is because it's kind of bad? I would refuse a Grammy too, if I knew I didn't deserve it.

This album feels like: “Let’s process our emotions in a healthy, quiet way.” And I’m over here like: “Do you have a distortion pedal? A snare? A controlled emotional spiral?” It’s intimate. It’s minimal. It’s emotionally mature. Meanwhile I’m spiritually standing in Guitar Center asking if it comes in Drop C and mild chaos. I respect the artistry. I acknowledge the vulnerability. But personally? I would rather listen to 20 Jazz Funk Greats by Throbbing Gristle which is neitehr jazz, fusion or jazz fusion

very whiney

Such an extraordinary voice for punk and they swaddled it in twee pop. Disgustin’. Bad production decisions everywhere: Melodies that sound like they were composed by an eight year old (exposed and humiliated by a dash of Prince’s brilliance); All of the sappy strings; Everything drenched in that murky solid state reverb. Even the attempt to rock out (Emperor’s New Clothes) ends up sounding like a Tiffany track, which is extraordinary given that Sinead clearly had the potential presence and force of Chrissie Hynde. Jump in the River is so bad it sounds like a high school production. Tragic, maybe; horrible, definitely.

This was another hard pass for me talented for sure but majority of the songs felt so striped back to a degree they forgot it was supposed to be music

Songs are all long, nothing except for "nothing compares to you" stands out and even that isn't a song I particularly love. Wasn't thrilled to see this pop up today and I'm glad it's over with.

This album was very slow and didn’t really do it for me.

This album feels way too introspective and personal for my taste. I usually listen to music to be entertained, and this one is just too heavy and depressing for me.

++: The Emperor's New Clothes +: Jump in the River, You Cause as Much Sorrow, The Last Day of Our Acquaintance +-: Feel So Different, I Am Stretched on Your Grave, Three Babies, Black Boys on Mopeds, Nothing Compares 2 U, I Do Not What I Haven't Got 3,6/10

Irish vibes not my vibe

Ya bu o kadar olmadı ki…

Lowkey sanctimonious.

Not really my cup of tea, i like like four songs though!

Not seeing the appeal of this album at all. I may also just be a 90s music hater. Really did not like this, would never listen again in my life

criminally boring. should actually be a crime to chart this high with songs that are so incredibly dull. this is an unironic review posted here: "We dumb humans couldn't look beyond her bald head.... RIP" i read a bunch of 5 star reviews from this website. are you kidding me? call it "spare" and "haunting" if you want to, but what's really happening here is nothing. if this album were produced today it would sell four copies.

I wish I liked this album. I wish I enjoyed listening to Sinead O'Connor. However, I had a bad time listening to this album. I thought that maybe if I sat down and forced myself to get through this album, I would have some new-found love for her music, but that did not happen. There were songs I enjoyed on this album more than others, but those songs were enjoyed mostly due to the instrumental. The titular track on this album had no instrumentals. I remember having another album queued up after this one, watching the time on the final track slowly dwindle down until I was allowed to have fun listening to music again. Of the 3 versions of Nothing Compares 2 U that I am familiar with, this is by far my least favorite one. It's a shame it's the "big one" here since I think The Emperor's New Clothes (The one song that actually had me boppin my head) was far more enjoyable. All this being said, Sinead O'Connor is an icon. Personally, I have no issues with her. She had a lot of important stuff to say, and I'm glad she was as popular as she was. I don't think this is a bad album in any way, but this album is 100% not for me. I normally take a star off when I know the artist is a bigot or I just personally dislike them, but life isn't fair and I have a rubric that I do my best to stick to for these albums. I will not be listening again, sorry Sinead (I know she's not reading this)

He shouldn't have bothered. This is just a huge pile of steaming keech! I've heard others doing many of these songs. In every case these were FAR better than Elvis. His vocals are awful, particularly on Fever. An insult to the entire American people.

Built on gentle acoustic guitars, minimal percussion, and soft orchestral touches that frame fragile, expressive vocals and lyrics steeped in personal pain this feels like a sparse, restrained and sappy Folk album

Felt poorly mixed, I didn't like the vocals, and I'm not sure why this was so popular.

I do like Nothing Compares to You, but the rest of the album I could do without. Very meh.

Meh. Boring. Nothing jived with me.

So deep

What a dirge. From start to finish this was depressive, doleful tunes and whined lyrics. She has a lovely voice but wasted on this nonsense.

First miserable weather we've seen in England for literally months and this is what I get today? I may as well drive off a cliff. I'm cominggggg Sinéaaaaaad! Seriously, this was dreadful. Just because she's dead doesn't make it haunting or powerful. L

I do not want what I just heard

I know the name but I can't say I have any prior familiarity with Sinead O'Connor's work. I was aware that Sinead was a huge act at a moment in time but I was too young for any of it to be relevant to me. I'm a little surprised to hear that this is a huge #1 album that pulled a bunch of Grammy awards in 1990. It doesn't seem like it has mass appeal, nor does it have what I would consider a hugely iconic hit/single. The whole entry was a little hollow and had limited lasting appeal to me when it wrapped. Perhaps this was lightning in a bottle and offered something different when it released? Were the haircut and controversial comments such a huge contributor to the zeitgeist that it elevated the album? Perhaps this context in the moment is significant, I don't know, but personally this one was a pretty disappointing entry. 1.38 stars

I respect Sinéad’s vocal abilities — she has a great voice — but Jesus Christ this was a dour listen. Music for the worst person you know who is probably into beat poetry. Lyrics so irredeemably on the nose over the top of incredibly stale production.

Lots of respect for Sinead as an activist, but this is a prime example of 90s stuff that just misses me entirely.

Alhaista alhaisempi albumi. Yksi on minimi?

not interested

booooring 1/5

Sorry I know she's lauded as like amazing but I thought this was shite huehuehueh

it's giving...old I was SO bored, I'm sorry also physically struggled to hear the songs...

I Do Not Want To Listen To This Ever Again.

Since NCTU got so much overplay, I never felt like listening to the remainder of the album. It is not my thing, but some may like it.

Not so good

Nice voice, but this album is so boring..

I have spent my whole life thinking that I like Sinead O’Connor, but apparently I don’t.

Ni me relajó, solo me aburrió.

Just bad...

Im really not a fan of this dated 90s Pop style

Did not like.

Sounded pretty much as expected, not for me. She's got a good voice I suppose but the music was very middle of the road, one of those albums where they can't have been excited with any of the music they came up with. A bit everything but the girl in that sense I think, where i get the feeling they think their lyrics are really interesting and it never occurred to them it had to sound good. Won't be back, I'm not completely sure it's bad but it isn't what I want to hear.

This has to be one of the most boring albums I've ever heard. Ex. Emperor's New Clothes is the same 2 chords the entire song. Next song, Black Boys on Mopeds, 4 chords on repeat the entire song. Most songs have no vocal interest. Doubled up vocals for style or to hide the lack of singing ability? I went into this one expecting to enjoy it and thought well I'm almost done... oh wait, there's a second disc!? The best song with amazing dynamics, an interesting arrangement, and a cool vocals... was written by someone else.

Gefällt mir nicht.

8 unforgettable, and barely audible dirges. One halfway decent song. One limp cover of a Prince B-side.

Boring AF.

I remember loving this when it came out... doesn't hold the same feeling for me today with the exception of the hit.

I did not enjoy this.

1.0 Not for me... I could not see myself ever turning up the volume on any song and liking it. Maybe Nothin Compares 2 U, but the Prince one is better (and he wrote the song). Starting to think ripping the pope picture was a publicity stunt.

I don't know what the hype is. The best song on this album isn't even hers and a lot of the other songs are atrocious. I haven't heard this music before and I hope I won't anytime soon. RIP but please save yourself 50 minutes and go listen to The Cranberries or Fleetwood Mac instead. Cheers.

I think I can safely say I have a least favourite album of all time now

Just a big nope on this one.

What a load of flumph

I know she has a great voice if you like that sort of thing, but I found this plodding and ponderous. Not for me.

We had a talent show for my elementary school back when I was in 4th grade. Anyone between the third and fifth grades were allowed to participate. One girl in the fifth grade - a pudgy broad with thick glasses and ratty hair - decided that she wanted to be the singer songwriter type. This was before the rise of the shy singer songwriter girls of the early to mid 2010s. Where she got the inspiration to sing is beyond me. Maybe Taylor Swift? Regardless, she went up on stage with her guitar in front of the entire school to sing an original song that she wrote. We were all waiting in anticipation to hear this shy girl spring out of her shell and become reborn as the resident pop star. The song she chose to perform was called “Butterfly”. And it was AWFUL. Let me say that again. AWFUL. Truly horrendous. The lyrics escape me, but it went something like “I will spread my wings and fly high, I am a butterfly”. And good lord she could not sing. Or play guitar for that matter. It was overall just a trainwreck. Everyone in the audience was at their best snickering, and at their worst howling laughing. Even the teachers couldn’t contain themselves. It was that bad. We all mocked her song relentlessly for the next 3 weeks. I think she transferred schools after that year. But yeah this album reminded me vividly of that moment, just with better instrumentals and an Irish accent. I haven’t thought about that in years. Thank you for putting a smile on my face Sinead! Too bad your only good song was a cover of Prince’s. Now that’s an artist that can actually sing.

So, um, pretty sure I could have Alexa play this album and clear out all people in any room in my house. The problem is then I would still be there. Would I have the strength to tell Alexa to stop playing Sinead O’Connor before that wigless Gaelic siren has sung me fast asleep?

Tenderly walks that thin line between uninteresting and shite

Feel so Different - It kinda sets a moody tone, but just drags on too damn long. I am Stretched on Your Grave - That break beat isn't working with Sinead's voice and this song. At all. Three Babies - The video of triple headed Sinead reminded me of The Real Slim Shady, and now I can't unsee it. The Emperor's New Clothes - A new wave type beat coming out of nowhere. Sinead must have learned her dance moves from Michael Stipe. Or the other way around. Black Boys on Mopeds - Back to another slow ballad. I don't know if it's just YouTube, but the mix is all over the place on this album, and has absolutely no consistency. Another meh song. Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead is decent, but Prince's version is better. I'll die on this hill. Jump in the River - Another jarring transition, but actually the best song so far. If only the guitar riff was less repetitive, and the punk vibe was taken up a notch, this could have been a banger. You Cause as Much Sorrow - Back to a slow ballad. Pretty but dull. The drum machine is really distracting. Last Day of Our Acquaintance - zzz I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got - Like listening to grass grow. Night Nurse (bonus) - Had to look this up, as I love the original version. TBF, Sinead's rendition is passable. Final verdict. She has a very good voice and some solid ideas for songs poorly executed. With a more well defined direction, more dynamic instrumentation (human drummer), better mixing and more fleshed out musical ideas, this would be something I'd actually enjoy listening to, but as it stands, I remain a distant and completely indifferent observer.

I do understand a lot of O'Connor's songs are mainly built around the lyrics and what they are about, but that's only one part of a song, and sadly, I usually enjoy the sound of a song before the lyrics, in which these songs really lack for me, even "Nothing Compares 2 U", in which Prince's at least has it's own sound to it. All I could think while listening to this album is "This sounds like if Enya was the lead singer of The Cranberries, which makes sense, considering they all are from Ireland, but I still couldn't shake that feeling, and it made a lot of songs sound like nothing I've heard before. I don't sound too harsh, but literally nothing here was something I cared about, even pushing it below U2. It's just a nothing album for me. Guess I just don't like Irish singers, except the Cranberries.

I only kind of liked 2 of the songs, just not for me.

Was never a fan

i really wanted to know what the black lads on mopeds were up to, but i can't fucking stand her voice so i couldn't be arsed to listen long enough to find out. never realised how much i can't stand this whiny bint before having to listen to this.

Complete ass.

She’s Irish and I’m Irish….just not my cup of tea…rather maudlin

Não é meu tipo de música e não gostei de nada

to drony and I found it boring. Really didn't like what I listened to.

"Nothing Compares 2 U" is the best song on the album and it's not even hers (shoutout to Prince). The rest of the album is just garbage. 3/10.

Bro...

Not good, bad, make it stop.

I only really liked one song. The rest all sounded the same...sad and whiney.

Tedious and jejune. Trying so hard to be agonizingly heartfelt.

Siempre he sido más fan de su voz y su locura de vida que de su música

This was a struggle for me to even get through. I understand what it was going for, but nothing connected with me at all. I couldn’t even finish the last song, which is the namesake of the album. Not really any redeeming qualities for me.

Oh yeah
