Reviews (page 3 of 8)

в мене ще з дитинства залишилось це відчуття, що саме так має звучати космічна музика. я таке дуже люблю, і поважаю людей, які роблять подібну музику

4/5. A pretty chill electronic album, seems to be one of the first of its kind, besides Oldfield and Tangerine Dream. And this is basically, synthesizer the album. The music is pretty calming and flowy, feels like great background music for writing or studying. I honestly would find myself listening to this again, it feels like good video game music at times as well. Can't say it's perfect but better than I thought it was going to be when it first started. Best Song: probably Oxygène (IV, II, V)

Really good stuff

Really enjoyed this one! Reminded me of the background music for Sigur Ros, or Brian Eno. Solid background music. Definitely a 4 in my books.

Very good atmosphere and I like the production.

This is really good, Boards of Canada of the 70s

kill jester

I had previously heard this album before but only once or twice. It's electronic and ambient and an interesting listen. I would listen again.

Pretty cool ambient electronica. Not the most captivating thing I've heard, but a pretty steady and enjoyable listen throughout. Big fan of the fact that the album is really one giant song, but doesn't get overly repetitive in a boring way. Worth the full listen

Oman alansa pioneeri ajalta jolloin noita soundeja joutui oikeasti duunaamaankin. Pidän

Hyvää ambient musaa 👌🏼⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Early electionica that holds up made for a good experience! This is what the 1001 Must Hear List is all about. (4.2*s) For the first time, I’m wishing I had heard this when it dropped. I think my music range would have been much wider. Didn’t know this until now.

Never thought I’d see the day where I enjoyed an ambient album

i know part 4 from somewhere, i enjoyed this, some good ambience

Organic

Electronic music. Has a good vibe, easy to listen to while driving or doing any activity. The first track reminds me of an underwater scene, maybe even underwater Mario levels for some reason. I enjoyed the listen. Good to listen straight through as the tracks are like movements in one piece of music. I wasn’t familiar with this artist at all, but he’s apparently quite famous and pioneering in this genre. This is one of the best things of the 1001 albums list - finding gems like this that I would never have come across on my own.

Interessant, hört sich sehr außerirdisch aber gut an

Classic

Overall: 7/10 Very cool. Very ambient. When your dad composed the score to Lawrence of Arabia, you definitely need to prove yourself if you decide to make your own music, and I believe Jean-Michel did with this. It's mostly ambient and atmospheric but there are times when the music feels more bouncy and upbeat. I recommend it. Fav Song: Oxygène, Pt. 2

The soundscape of pt 2 really echoes in modern experimental electronica . Great album!

Never heard of this cat before and had no idea how big he was. Some really interesting beats and sounds.

Chill and laid back. Solid listen. Especially in the evening or during a study session. Very relaxing and spacey. Does sound slightly dated but that kind of makes it endearing.

Definitely better to listen to with headphones

This is really good. I dig the vibe and can definitely appreciate the significance. It’s background music, but it’s really good background music.

Ein paar bekannte Titel/Themen. Entspannte Musik für konzentriertes Arbeiten. Die besten Titel wie Oxygène (Part IV) blieben am besten hängen.

Interstellar.

I think I’ve heard this album before. When track #2 started playing, it felt so familiar, like I’d been there before. It brought back a rush of memories, though I can’t quite place where they came from.

The progenitor of video game soundtracks.

It really grew on me. Sounded like it should have been a soundtrack for a cheesy 80s sci-fi show, but it did what it is well.

It's very good I like it

Sehr cool.

Actually pretty enjoyable. 3.5/5

Enjoyable and great use of various instruments!

4.2 - I could space out to this for days

Entire worlds are built from Jarre's analog warmth and carefully crafted patterns, and if you're listening closely, you won't be able to resist the feeling of temporal transportation.

This was such a big part of my teenage years when I started to discover my own music, that it is really hard to form an opinion on it. Listening to it now, I am rather distracted by the (now) cheap sounding sweeps, phasers, "p-chew" sounds etcetera. Like a 1980's computer game. I feel they are unnecessary and the main sounds and melodies (which are great) are more than enough. Less is more but in the early days of synths it must have been tempting to try out all the buttons. Still, JM Jarre is one of the pioneers of electronic music and definitely influential. His live gigs were a sonic and visual spectacle. I'll say a 3, plus a bonus point because he did this in the 1970s and has made his mark.

Very spooky, very interesting. Sounds like a good game soundtrack.

That's a cool album cover and this got pretty spacey but in a fun way. I feel like this did the same thing as another album on the list tried to do, but this one made it work. I was entranced by this and I'm not sure why. I listened to this six times in a row. This got me into a weird mental state but I really liked the listen. I'm buying this album.

Futuristic sounding - all instrumental Maybe the background for space mountain!

Jean-Michel Jarre is a fraud.

Reading about the production of this album is incredible. The sellotape to press down two buttons on the drum machine at once, the early use of synth, the kitchen production studio ... It's got a real rags to riches, DIY, "building a cruise ship in the garage" narrative. And listening to it, for me, is like drinking sparkling water. It's better than the alternative! I like it a lot. I would actively choose it in many scenarios. But it's not going to emotionally move me in the way that say a negroni or an iced jug of elderflower cordial might. So an amazing album in many respects, and one I will listen to again. But a refreshing ramble rather than a life-changing 40 minutes.

An ambiance of Outer space and inner sway Wedded sonically

Ambient music, a little trippy, that could be the soundtrack to every sci-fi television show or movie from the 1970s that was not Star Wars. It sounds a lot like Tangerine Dream. It is hard to believe this was NOT intended to be a soundtrack for something. Regardless of why it was made, it is a great album of background music. Favorite track: Oxygène

This was pretty cool ambient music.

It reminds me a video game/movie sci fi soundtrack, which is good for me.

This was really good, can see how it would have been very influential at the time. Great soundtrack to work to. Enjoyed it about as much as the Tangerine Dream album I got from this a few weeks ago. Going to add it into my instrumental rotation.

Didn’t really know what I was getting into, but this album felt like a journey!

Nostalgic and retro-futuristc, reminds me of old videogames and space movies. Can't love this as much Eno's ambient music, but it's entertaining. My favorite segment was pt. 5

I loved this. Highlights: Pt. 4 & 5

First song started out like someone experimenting with a synth for the first time, however after this I really loved this album. On a second listen I’d perhaps enjoy the first song more. I felt transported to a sci fi adventure and floating through space. Favourites: pt. 3, 4, and 5

Would I listen to this again? No. But was it kinda cool? Yes! I can see this would have probably changed the game with synthesisers Fav songs part 2 and part 5

Pink Floyd & Daft Punk lovechild, I'm here for it

🎧This is pretty damn sick

Honestly, this is a phenomenal sounding record for 1976. It makes for great background music while doing yard work or similar activities.

Great before bed listen. Fabulous. Otherworldly. Space traveller type shi

Strong homosexual undertones.

For 1976, this is incredibly impressive stuff. I got absolutely lost in this album. It’s clear that this was a landmark recording for those that came after in the genre. But the most unexpected place these soundscapes took to me was to the Mass Effect soundtrack in Part V. The influences of this album appear to be deep and far ranging. Really cool. A thoroughly enjoyable listen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Definitely cool, and it's clear it has not just influenced the genre, but also cinematic soundtracks.

Great progressive electronic with a Berlin School touch, but made by a French dude so it has its own unique vibe that differs from what was being made in Germany at that time. Great stuff

A phenomenal tour de force for this French electronic composer. Really great stuff!

This album atmosphere is just perfect. A great piece of music to float by in the sky!

My first ambient album in the list. Exceptional!!

I rather enjoyed this, it kind of felt like listening to a story. Like it started out laying the foundation for the rest to come.

me when the moog

Listening to this I can hear how much one of my favorites bands (The Octopus Project) was influenced by Jean Michel Jarre. How are the French just so good at electronica?

This immediately makes me want to go back and be 8 again watching Tom Baker's Doctor Who in his long-ass scarf and me thinking the future was going to be a lot cooler than it ended up being. Loved it. 8/10 4 stars.

Listened Before? N I set aside my eye-roll when yet another electronica album showed up and listened to this one fairly well. I really dug this. It's so much more complex and creative than most modern electronic stuff. Highly recommended. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Oxygene Pt. 4

Chill ambient beats to work to.

Great vibe all around.

I've been listening to Mort Garson's Plantasia and watching the show Carême a lot lately - this is the perfect blend of those two and I will not elaborate further.

Album explores a different dimension

So recognizable. Great early synth compositions

The one thing this project has taught me is that I'm into Pure Moods-core

This one is a workday balm!

Quite nice; it reminded me a bit of Tangerine Dream’s “Phaedra,” but this one didn’t quite sink its hooks into me in the same way.

Easy-going, chill, really all I want in some electronic album of this era. I've heard people talk about Jean-Michel Jarre before as one of those early prog electronic greats besides Kraftwerk or Klaus Schulze but never got around to a thing of his proper until now. It's nothing that I haven't heard or haven't experienced in other music but despite that it's still a very nice album, I really recommend it if you just want something easy while still interesting and intricate as far as electronics go.

Wait kinda loveee

A good album, very soothing sounds.

I really liked this! I like when theres a sense of storytelling in electronic music. This isnt just pleasent listening but it keeps me interested. I can also tell how influential this is.

cool spacey 70s french ambient music. i'm sure this was absolutely mind-boggling when it came out, even though now it seems pretty tame. still pleasant to listen to. also this is a sick album cover, definitely worthy of being airbrushed onto the side of a panel van. favorites: oxygene pts. 1, 2, and 4

Terraria music before its time. Incredible. I like that the tracks bleed into one another. It gives a 70s prog rock feel (which, I guess, is exactly what it is), a genre that somehow feels both overrated and underrepresented in the set of most legendary music ever created. The bass at the beginning of Pt. 2 is very reminiscent of Pink Floyd's Sheep (1977) – so much so that it's very possible Pink Floyd was inspired by Jarre's work. The beginning of Pt. 4 also greatly resembles the opening of One Of These Days (1971) off the Meddle album. I wonder if the two artists influenced each other throughout the 70s. There are also some elements of Oxygène that are unusual for progressive rock, the most noticeable of which is the very abrupt addition of cosmic, high-pitched synths partway through Pt. 5(?). This almost gives it a movie or TV show soundtrack feel rather than a slow soundscape record. In contrast, the music's tendency to stoutly remain on one chord for several minutes at a time does get a little tedious. This is not one for close listening, that's for sure. Jean-Michel Jarre is clearly having a blast in his makeshift home studio. And heck, the audience is too. This apparently reached #1 in France and #2 in the UK, which is something that would be unheard of for an ambient electronic album in the 21st century. (Man, these zoomers and their dinky attention spans!) 4/5 Key tracks: Side 1 (Pts. 1-3)

Might sound a little dated now, but I bet it was pretty awesome when it came out.

I’m a big fan of electronic music, it was great to listen to a pioneer of the genre. Can really get a sense of how it’s derived from this

Итс э классик. Лучшая песня - Oxygène (Part II).

Runescape-aah beat in Pt. 5 HL: “Pt. 5”, “Pt. 4”, “Pt. 2” February 15, 2025

Of course, one of the most important albums in the history of electronic music. Absolutely gorgeous soundscapes, and top notch production. It's obvious by the lack of diversity in sounds that electronic music was still in its infancy, but on the whole this still sounds amazing, and of course was super influential.

So intense - what a great listen

It sounds like something I'd hear on a 70's sci-fantasy soundtrack. Nice background music for working on reports, with its weird ethereal quality.

Positively surprised. Had a great time listening to this while cleaning my vinyl collection.

Brings back nostalgic memories of sitting hunched over my ZX Spectrum while this plays on a double tape deck. A solid four, though I appreciate some of that may be the nostalgia.

I dig this

Really enjoyed this. It’s a cool vibe, very sci fi. As Big Al says it’s kinda background music, but it’s very good background music.l

Really like this. Love the continuity between the songs and a real feeling of it being one piece

Groundbreakingness understood although it's not necessarily something I'll put on an awful lot. But... It's also something I'm sure I'll listen to again at some point.

Gorgeous electronic instrumental.

Will need to give another listen sometime. But I really enjoyed this. Seemed like one long song meant to underscore a spiritual journey.

Atmospheric. Good stuff. Clearly ahead of its time.

What’s French for Kraftwerk? But this is a really good album.

In always up for a bit of ambient electronica, and JMJ definitely brings it here. I miss the films of the early 80s, which had soundtracks that sounded like this despite it being completely incongruous to the setting and feel of the actual story - bring back films like The Keep and Ladyhawke, you cowards!

Interesting

this was so much better than i thought it would be reminded me of low by bowie but with more purpose very sci fi and i loved it

You know its gonna be barmy when the artist is on the adhd hyperfocus playlist

Dated futurism that still sounds great. This is mind blowing for 76.

I had only heard Oxygene pt. 4 before, which is really nice. Not everything is quite as catchy, but it's definitely a cool album.

Cool art. Interesting to learn about an electronic pioneer who was so famous to have played at the pyramids of Giza and be highly influential who I've never heard of. Reminds me a lot of Deuter but who took a more Brian Eno approach and later gets a little more hard/proto-EDM. Listened to two more of his albums too.

Very influential cosmic/spacey electronic music from France that still sounds quite futuristic 48 years after its release. Let's just stop for a second and imagine how different it must have sound back in the mid 1970s. A very good listen which I enjoyed a lot.

Interesting, it started off quite fun and kinda ambient very synth heavy, got to be in a right mood to listen too but I think I was

01) Oxygene, Pt. 1 - 7,0 02) Oxygene, Pt. 2 - 9,0 03) Oxygene, Pt. 3 - 7,5 04) Oxygene, Pt. 4 - 10,0 05) Oxygene, Pt. 5 - 7,5 06) Oxygene, Pt. 6 - 7,0 TOTAL: 8,00 (80/100) Current ranking: 137/395

Loved this. Even more impressive when you think about it being done in the 70s

8/10 Fantastic and obviously influential electronic album. As someone who listens to contemporary French electronic music, its influence is still felt. Some of this would be amazing with Odezenne on top of it. Of course I’d heard the big 2 songs on here, but the sonic landscape of the others was really interesting. Cool ambient sounds and textures, almost biological in places Maybe the ratio of interlude/build-up vs propulsive tunes was slightly off Best: Oxygène (Part IV)

Excellent jazzy music. Perfect for listening while reading on a train.

This is the kind of music I would have listened to with my computer nerd male friends, sitting in the basement flipping through their copies of Omni magazine. Maybe I did and that's why it all has a familiar glow? Time and place---spinning this while driving through town on a moody misty night hit just right.

I discovered the music of JMJ while living in France in the 1980s. In my opinion his masterpiece album is Equinoxe. Believe me, the next time you are driving someplace with beautiful scenery, put that album on and feel the majesty of it all. This album predates it though, which is probably why it was selected. Music that you really need to sink into. Close your eyes, let it take you on a journey. It was ahead of its time, definitely deserves a listen.

I mean, it's legendary stuff and pretty crazy to think that it's nearly 50 years old as it still gives off futuristic sound vibes.

bathing in a bubble bath of bits and bytes. feels like taking a power washer to my brain

A strong 4! Very cool sound

This remained me of the film Fantastic Planet and Plantasia. Very 70s electronic yet captivating. I enjoyed this very much.

## In-Depth Review of *Oxygène* by Jean-Michel Jarre Jean-Michel Jarre's *Oxygène*, released in December 1976, is a landmark album in the realm of electronic music. Its innovative use of synthesizers and soundscapes not only defined a genre but also influenced countless artists in the decades that followed. This review delves into the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, and its lasting impact on the music industry. ### ****Music and Production *Oxygène* is primarily an instrumental album, composed of six parts that flow seamlessly into one another. The music is characterized by: - **Synthesizer Innovation**: Jarre employed various synthesizers, including the ARP 2600 and the EMS Synthi AKS, to create a rich tapestry of sounds. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Jarre did not attempt to mimic traditional instruments; instead, he embraced the unique qualities of electronic sounds, which contributed to the album's distinctive character. - **Minimalist Approach**: The album was recorded on a limited budget using a home studio setup. Jarre's minimalist approach is evident in the sparse arrangements and the use of tape-loop effects. This simplicity allowed for a focus on texture and atmosphere rather than complexity. - **Dynamic Soundscapes**: Each track features evolving motifs and layers that create a sense of movement. The use of sequencers to develop rhythmic patterns is reminiscent of the Berlin School style pioneered by groups like Tangerine Dream. However, Jarre’s compositions are notable for their organic feel and emotional depth. - **Production Techniques**: The album’s production was groundbreaking for its time. Jarre utilized techniques such as filtering and layering to create depth within each track. The sounds were meticulously crafted to ensure that no two notes were identical, giving life to even the most repetitive sequences[1][3]. ### ****Themes Thematically, *Oxygène* explores concepts related to nature, existence, and humanity’s relationship with technology: - **Environmental Consciousness**: The album cover art, created by Michel Granger, features a haunting image of Earth with its crust peeled back to reveal a skull. This visual metaphor speaks to themes of mortality and environmental degradation, suggesting a deep concern for the planet’s future. - **Human Experience**: Each part of *Oxygène* can be interpreted as an exploration of human emotions and experiences. The sweeping synths evoke feelings ranging from tranquility to existential dread, creating an auditory journey that mirrors life's complexities. - **Technological Reflection**: By embracing electronic music, Jarre reflects on humanity's increasing reliance on technology. The juxtaposition of natural sounds with synthetic tones creates a dialogue about progress and its implications for human existence[2][4]. ### ****Lyrics While *Oxygène* is primarily instrumental, it does incorporate some vocal elements. However, these are sparse and often treated as additional layers rather than focal points: - **Vocal Samples**: The few vocal snippets present are heavily processed and serve more as atmospheric elements than traditional lyrics. This choice reinforces the album's emphasis on sound over words. - **Absence of Conventional Lyrics**: The lack of conventional lyrics allows listeners to interpret the music personally without being guided by specific narratives or themes. This freedom enhances the immersive experience that *Oxygène* offers[2][3]. ### ****Influence The influence of *Oxygène* on electronic music cannot be overstated: - **Pioneering Electronic Music**: Often credited with leading the synthesizer revolution of the 1970s, *Oxygène* has inspired numerous artists across genres. Its melodic hooks and innovative sound design have been referenced by musicians ranging from Moby to contemporary electronic acts[4]. - **Cultural Impact**: The album not only achieved commercial success—selling over 12 million copies—but also established Jarre as a prominent figure in electronic music. Its tracks have been used in various media contexts, including film soundtracks and therapeutic settings. - **Legacy**: Over the years, *Oxygène* has been revisited through sequels such as *Oxygène 7–13* (1997) and *Oxygène 3* (2016), showcasing its enduring relevance in Jarre's oeuvre and the broader musical landscape[3][4]. ### ****Pros and Cons #### Pros - **Innovative Sound Design**: The use of synthesizers in novel ways set new standards for electronic music production. - **Timeless Quality**: Despite its age, *Oxygène* maintains a fresh sound that resonates with contemporary audiences. - **Emotional Depth**: The ability to convey complex emotions without traditional lyrics showcases Jarre's artistry. #### Cons - **Repetitive Elements**: Some listeners may find certain motifs overly repetitive or simplistic over extended listening sessions. - **Niche Appeal**: As an instrumental album, it may not appeal to those who prefer lyrical content or more conventional song structures. - **Dated Production Techniques**: While innovative at its release, some production methods may feel dated compared to modern standards in electronic music[1][2][3]. ### Conclusion In summary, Jean-Michel Jarre's *Oxygène* stands as a monumental work in electronic music history. Its innovative approach to sound design, thematic depth, and cultural impact solidify its status as a cornerstone of the genre. While it may present challenges for some listeners due to its minimalist structure and lack of traditional lyrics, its ability to evoke emotion and provoke thought ensures that it remains relevant today. As both a product of its time and a timeless piece of art, *Oxygène* continues to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners alike.

Kinda spooky.

Classic.

Don't rate this based on listening through a crappy little Amazon Echo device. Needs a decent system to do it justice.

This is different, it’s imaginative, it’s cool, it’s creepy. It’s art, this is a ride through space. Very Pink Floyd esque. My son will love falling asleep to this

Beautiful range of sounds, I feel like it is a beautiful test of all functions of headphones. Feels like a massage for the brain.

I've seen this album's cover on the list challenges page where I log the albums I've listened to, and this cover was so intriguing that I had to pull up the Wikipedia page for the album. I read that it was an electronic/ambient album, and since then, I've been really excited to get to review this album. I'm hoping it can live up to the lofty expectations that I've set for it! Unfortunately, this album didn't live up to the expectations I had for it, and that's on me for building up anticipation for it for probably over a year. Oops. Even though this album wasn't a five-star album for me, I really enjoyed it, and it was great to listen to for the impact and influence its had on popular music. I really love synth pop music, and I imagine that if it weren't for this album, some of my favorite pieces of music may not exist. Each song felt like its own little journey, and those little journeys added up to a pilgrimage through electronic music. This album was beautiful, and after listening to it twice today, I think it's worthy of even more repeat listens. My biggest beef with it is that it left me wanting more elements to be present to the overall sound, and at more than a few occasions, some of it felt like background music. This was still a great album though, and I'm glad I finally got to check it off of my list.

Important album -

Atmospheric and chill. Definitely enjoyed the entire album. Perfect for a long car ride, to me at least.

Well it’s a pioneering album. Sampled over and over. Truly ahead of its time. Probably won’t need it until I NEED IT 4/5

Definitely ahead of its time

Atmospheric!

a solid enough early electronic album. i enjoyed the soundscape here, but really i don't have a lot to say here. it was pleasant, it sounded nice, it really gave me nothing beyond that.

Interesting and mysterious. I liked it

This was the perfect album for all the driving around I did Thursday! Very chill and loved most* of the early electronica sounds (*it got a bit annoying in bits, but you have to hand to to Jarre for creating an entire new genre of music!). I'd only listened to 1 track from this album previously, but I have a a soft spot for both early electronica and french electronic music - so this was an enjoyable listen! I imagine it would have been cool to listen to through headphones, staring up at the sky, in a field of flowers, smoking a cigarette with a pain au chocolate in one hand and a glass of champagne in the other - maybe one day!

Lives up to its name: light as air and supremely relaxing. Really beautiful.

next time I am in an interstellar movie I will know how to set the mood

Inspiring and otherworldly.

More than any other album I’ve listened to here so far, this is truly “one thing”. Wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but ended up liking it. Will definitely listen to again at night with a J in hand.

Never heard of this artist but this album is great! Awesome instrumental stuff, reminds me of those '70s giallo films, a few of these tracks sound like they could've been in Suspiria, and that's a huge compliment! More like this please, and less milquetoast copy-paste rock BS. Favorite tracks: Pt. 2, 3, 6. Album art: A skull emerging from the globe, the Earth's surface peeling away like skin. Really, really dope. 4/5

Good and wooshy.

Enjoyable for sure. Parts of it were familiar to me already, especially Part 4, but also some of the more ambient parts as backing music in Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy. Part 6 as well sounds very modern, with sounds I associate with contempory artists.

I don’t know- there’s something strange relaxing and oddly familiar in this album.

Was pretty good and enjoyable chill music. You already know I saved this to the reading/focus playlist

That was really good

ambient

Old timey electronic background music, I could have this playing on a loop for 10 hours and maybe not notice that it was repeating. Very excellent music for the genre, but nothing about it gives it an excellent review.

It is like being immersed in laid back, atmospheric space battle.

great album

I'd been meaning to listen to this for a while and completely forgot about it. I'm in to it.

Tämä oli solid 3,5 joten pyöristyy neljään! Hyvää syntikkamaalailua! 4/5

Love it

It's kind of insane that this album came out in 1976, long before today's ubiquitous electronic music. But in a way, this feels like an ancient album: there has been so much growth since the first experiments with the medium. This album is a great example of those pioneer days.

synth instrumental

Synthwave pre 2018? Unreal. Insanely meditative and introspective. Energetic, fun and light. Incredible to imagine they recorded this on analog synths with analog recording gear. I'm a big 90's euro house and french electronic music so this strikes a sweet chord with me. As proto as the genre can get I mean its pretty enticing.

Interesting. Seems to come from a time when this type of music had some popularity.

Very atmospheric, but I can see a lot of music being influenced by this. Specifically any euro dance music in the last 30 years. I'd listen to it again while working. It's good zone out music

A diferencia de muchos otros discos en este listado, éste sí probó ser influyente en su presente y en su futuro. En los 80 todos sabían quién era JM Jarré.

Good, worth listening again

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this. This is the sort of album I want to discover on this

This was great, familiar at times too. Probably a 4.5

Delightful stuff. Country miles ahead of it's time

Very reminiscent of visits to the planetarium as a child. Cool little album that works well as background music.

Trance

Instrumental, dreamy, sleep music

A fun instrumental album that still holds up today, with Standouts in Part II and IV.

Gear: Meze 109 PRO Artwork: Ganz schön Meddl für Electro-Ambient 🤘 Mix: etwas luftig unten rum Musik: Synths! Theremins! Sensationen! Wertung: ⚛️⚛️⚛️⚛️(⚛️)/5

I had no idea what I was going to be hearing and I loved every second of it. I somehow feel more knowledgeable having been exposed to this work.

Not too much to say here but will mention how otherworldly it sounds. The synths do all the heavy lifting but manage to create a dignifying sci-fi sound. If you told me the Duffer brothers S.T. (Stranger Things) soundtrack was inspired by this, I would believe you. I have never heard or imagined a 70s album to have this sort of atmosphere to it. Rendering this album to be somewhat one of a kind and original. Lots of head spinning alien like sounds to this LP, I recommend not only giving it a try but listening with headphones as well. In order to get that full ethereal otherworldly feel. This album may just leave your ears tingling.

great atmosphere, fun to listen to

If this were the soundtrack to some Sci-Fi RPG game I'm sure it would be Amazing! Though I can't really see myself just sitting and listening to it much on it's own

Ya know, this is some good old space-age electronic that I can get down with. Crazy that this came out in 76; the synth-wave tone that is on display here (prominently in the driving Pt 4) I tend to associate with the 80s. The synth tones and style throughout remind me of a random record I picked up from KaChunk a while back by a band called Mong Tong (https://open.spotify.com/album/0iz5iVfY8aQiVDY6k3eefT?si=mHowU0TvQoGx39c9lkabUA). Mong Tong is quite a bit more psychedelic in sound, but there is some common element between their sound and that on display here. This was a really pleasant and expansive electronic record. The "parts" separate distinct compositions that really otherwise feel like a natural continuation of a single narrative. I would say this is low 4 territory for me.

Sounds like the soundtrack to a space-faring indie video game. Obligatory "would take drugs and listen to this album". I really enjoy electronic albums like this and this was no exception.

That was some super trippy lo-fi electronic that I could listen to on repeat all day. Nothing was super spectacular like other electronic albums, but the whole thing was just super satisfying. Also shoutout to an awesome album art.

Very soothing

I enjoyed listening to this one more than I thought i would. Might go back and listen more again soon!

I first found this album when I was looking for record with Popcorn on it. The guy at the used record store was totally positive this was the album that had it, and he pointed me to Oxygene part 4. I was a stupid kid, and this was pre-internet, so I paid my $4 and bought the album despite the fact that "Oxygene" was a different word than "Popcorn". I was disappointed. I hadn't found the album I was looking for. I tried to like this album then, but was having a lot of trouble getting into it. Perhaps it was partly because of the disappointment, but I couldn't really enjoy it. I gave it to a friend of mine who also had a record player and got a synthesizer for Christmas. Years later, my tastes have expanded, and while it's still not my favorite, I can dig the vibe a little better now. Not my favorite synth work, but it's a solid album to have on in the background while I work.

Dreamy background music

8/10 - This album is so good. I was designing a dnd puzzle while listening to it and it was just so perfect to figure out how I wanted it to work. parts 2, 4, and 6 were the best but it was all good.

Soothing and hypnotic. Pt. 4 has a lovely mid-seventies European futurism, at the time the most high-tech sound imaginable which even today sounds somewhat otherworldly. Cool recording. Has an "organic" feel to it even though completely electronic, even the bird sounds are synthesizer and studio effect. Astonishing to me that he recorded this in his apartment.

Brilliant album, unlike anything else on this list. Listened to it twice and got lost in it both times.

If you like synth ambience this has it in spades. Kinda spooky kinda dreamy. Is it good? Your mileage may vary. However I found I liked this way more when I had it on the background while working on some artwork as opposed to listening during my job hours. I could see this belonging on a soundtrack to an early sci fi dystopian movie or videogame. In fact, all I could think of is Psycho Dream for the Snes as I listened to this (which has a killer soundtrack and visuals) Or even some of the tracks for Mass Effect (Vigil, Ilos specifically). All in all, pretty interesting album, 70's synths and soundscapes arent my forté but they definitely conjure up some cool vibes.

Lo que debió ser escuchar esto en 1976!!! Alguna vez lo había oído antes por encima, hecho así de forma seguida sigue pareciéndome muy bueno y mejor de lo que recordaba. Grandes las partes 2 y 4.

I liked it more than I expected to

Isn’t it crazy that by the time the 1970s were over, electronic music had already reached its peak?

A classic of electronic music.

Like spending 40 minutes hovering over the Tyrell Corporation or hanging with the Droogs at the milk bar. Dig it.

I'm a sucker for this kind of early experimental synth music so I thought this was awesome.

synthesize me cap’n! Need to spend more time with this one but cool soundscapey, kinda ambient but kinda in your face synth album. Interesting listen.

Sounds like the end credits of an alien Christopher Nolan movie. It was surprisingly awesome!

A very pleasant ambient electronica. I can see this leading the way and influencing many, many bands. I think I may have even heard some riff's from one of the tracks in a Pink Floyd and Prodigy album somewhere....

Chill electronica. Enjoyed it.

I’m always amazed at the things that came out in the 70’s. This so cool and never would I have guessed it was over 40 years old.

Absolutely ground breaking. Super interesting to listen to given its age. Very easy to get lost in

Less ambient than I thought, but still really good. One of them, I think around 3-5, goes into this cool chiptuney thing around halfway through (like 7 years before chiptune was commonly used in video games). Anyway, good.

Futuristic

Early electronic music was still figuring out the potential of the new music-making machines, so the now-common genre of electronic dance music was still in it's primitive stage. Instead, electronic music was more focused on providing ambiance and layered soundscapes that were mostly instrumental. A lot of the genre was developed in Europe, so it makes sense that we visit France as a foundation for understanding progressive electronic music. Oxygène is an influential album in the world of electronic music for it's utilization of both analogue and digital synthesizers. Jean-Michel Jarre's innovations would inspire other artists such as Moby, who would incorporate the same dynamism in his trip hop music.

I haven't guessed the genre of this, too different. All the songs have the same name, I'll check the meaning of that. Otherwise it's electronica so lyrics are not gonna be the main attraction sadly I think. It has a historical influence, but not something one could instantly enjoy, I suppose. I also sense transitionss like a Avalanches. I decided not to rate each song independently since it's a one big song. First song, just as I thought, no lyrics, so I put the headphones on, just in case magic happens like this. Weird sounds go through first in right and then left ear. Otherwise it's chill. Alien UFO sound now. Different notes came in. There is nothing on genius, I think this album is the origin of many sounds, that artists used later idk. It's just... nothing. Oh, a "manly" beat came in, orchestral vibes too. It's same as before now. I have no idea why should I like this. Squeaky sounds, umm even weirder came up just now. Second song, it was an amazing transition, plus new sounds unlocked, it's like a game now, each song suggests new stuff, and I guess that's fun. Wow different vibe fully now, I mean the constant sound is changed, background ear-to-ear sounds are almost same. It's like Chicken Invaders sounds tbh. It has a beat to it(constant one), I'd shake ass to it. So bad that I don't know instrument names, but I recognise them. It's more melodic now. I'm definitely getting the vibe now, it relaxes me in a different way. New background sounds came in, it's wavey(almost like sea), plus sand sounds andd windyy. The wind goes from left to right ear, very satisfying. Third song, idk if there was a transition, but it's quite different now, constant tinnitus like sounds in the background, while notes are taken in the right ear, and a slight beat. Also very short song compared to the before ones. It got slower and slower, while alien sounds in the right ear go out and birdsong comes in(and goes). 4th song, this is the most listened song. Oh, tropical vibes. I like the progressiveness. Trombone thingy is in action with a constant beat in my right ear, violins came in slightly. This is the most active one so far. But last three were relaxing on a different level, plus interesting. It didn't evolve any further just last half of the song used different sounds. 5th song, umm helicopter sound almost, seems ASMRy, plus bird sounds, but if they were robotic. 10 MINUTES?! It's violiny now. No constant beat. Just slowly vibing with that instrument, there is an additional sound in the left ear too. Constant beat came in low key. It's not progressing. It's almost-cannon like sound now. Sparkling noisess. Ohh left ear has a real beat now. Wtff the scratchy sounds now. This is evolving. FUUCK IT IS GOING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT EAR, AND THERE IS TWO BEATS. ONE GOES TO LEFT ANOTHER TO THE RIGHT. What if they collide. Beats are in their places and main character is another instrument now. At the end cannon sounds again with a bit of sea wave. Now just wave sounds. 6th song, wtf there was a transition, didn't even notice. Little tropical vibes slowly coming in, but wave sound is the main. There is a flowing melody now, with a different sounding guitar(I think). It's not dramatically different, but it's more pianoed. I love this electric piano even more, it has a nostalgic vibe somehow(a sample? I doubt). Oh it is fading away, and this crushing(wave) sound is the main attraction. This is it? Random bird sound in the left ear. Yes, that was it, I wanted more from the ending, but I suppose that's fine too. However weird it may sound for some, I actually liked this, it was a journey, that I never knew I wanted. I wasn't amazed completely, but it was unique in a way, which I liked a lott. So 4 stars, yes, I'm being veery generous, on the other hand it was much better than some vocal guys out there with the same exact sounds throughout the album.

At times it left a little too sci-fi movie soundtrack-esque. But overall it was so cool to experience the beautifully crafted synth sounds.

Lovely ambient electronica. Good as background music, but not much as a standalone

Electronic album from 1976. Have actually heard of the artist before and enjoyed a few of his songs as a kid. High hopes. Recognise part 4! 4.

I don't listen to ambient music very much but this was a nice introduction

Good, for it's time

Gratos recuerdos en la música electrónica

Enjoyed this! Great work listen and honestly cool. So ahead of its time

I was in a band in Sixth Form with a guy who was super into this album. I’ve always though we were a weird match for a band, because he was this fantastic classical guitarist and saxophonist with a plan to play video game sounds over electronica played by our bandmate, and I was a budding singer-songwriter and self taught punk guitarist, trying to find a balance between my love of the Replacements, Bruce Springsteen, and Carly Rae Jepsen. We came up with some decent stuff, but it mostly downplayed the electronics and played into our shared love of Jazz and Funk. Now that I’ve finally got around to listenong to Oxygène, I can appreciate how it would have fit into our sound (and maybe have sounded pretty good with one of my amateur solos over the top.) Although, my appreciation may be entirely down to my ability to enjoy 70’s Sci-Fi, who knows?

Great album to have on in the background - good to hum along to. Different end of the spectrum to some stuff that pops up too often on here.

Just way better than it had any right to be to use a JS quote

This rocked, especially Part IV because it was on Pure Moods and that really took me back to my childhood.

I'm not really into electronic stuff, but I'm trying to evolve beyond listening to just stuff with lyrics; I found this to be engaging. The early synth sounds were interesting to hear.

Absolutely crazy that this album came out in 76. It is weird, but good weird. It is unashamedly electronic, which works both in its favor and against it, but mostly for it.

As a sum of its parts this was good, but no individual track really stood out to me. I wish it tapped more into the ambient sound and was not so noisy at certain points.

Music to chill

Cool ambient early electronic music. Kind of videogamey vibes. Good for background walking around/working.

I've been listening to a lot of ambient electronic music from the 90's lately and this intro immediately grabbed me. Then I looked and saw that it was from the 70's and thought "hell yea!". I love hearing something and thinking its from a completely different time period. Feels like some anachronistic (finally, I get to use this word!) glitch. Yea I'm such a geek for this type of music. When song 2 breaks (around the 2 minute mark I think), I'm really pulled in and feeling... determined? Excited? I could do with a few less laser sounds, but I get it that this was the 70's. It's also just a littttle bit too heavy on the sweeping filtering panning synths. I really enjoyed this. Probably biased like I said because of my recent listening to similar acts, but I felt like this really nailed the idea

This was kinda cool, especially the Bolero re-imagining in the middle

Loved this

Lots of people think it's great or terrible or too weird. I just think it's super creepy.

Innovative synth music back in its day, still very much nice music to listen to today.

It is immensely difficult to drive these old synths, so, this is amazing. Very balanced, controlled and textured sounds. Fascinating from top to bottom. 9/10

it’s cool but don’t think I really wanna listen to it just makes me wanna listen to wish you were here

Standout: Oxygene Part IV Oxygene Part IV really standouts out on this album, the rest of the album is boring, but nice to have on in the background... 3.5

greetings traveller

Really liked this. Nice chill vibes

This was fire and you can hear the influences it has on future generations of electronic music. That being said, I could not imagine standing shoulder to shoulder with 3.5 MILLION people to see this live lol

I feel modern electronic has a couple motivations behind it outside of usually being dance music. One is that it wants to feel like the sound of the future, the other is that it wants to sound like the past usually trying to feed off the sound of old synthesizer music or 90s video game sounds. I don't know much about the history of electronic music but this is the oldest electronic album I have listened to. I feel that this record that came out in 1976 manages to create a sound of something in the 90s. A lot of the songs felt like something I'd hear in a playstation one video game or something like that, it feels so ahead of its time yet it feels so vintage for me since I'm listening to it in 2023.

Extremely listenable ambient electronica.

Brilliant. Enjoyed every minute of it.

4.75, I really dug this one.

I followed this up with Equinoxe and enjoyed it just as much.

Banger instrumental.

A great album. Very clever brain behind this project.

I really dug this. Going to check out more of their stuff.

Trés bien

Haven’t heard this in years! Still great.

Although this is not something that I would regularly listen to, I enjoyed it for what it was. This was really well put together music that was easy to listen to.

This was pretty rad. Far out even.

Interesting soundscapes. I actually enjoyed this

Question: Will this mark the first 5 star review I've given to an artist I hadn't heard of before? I don't know the history of this album that came out in 1976 but I bet at the time it was groundbreaking. After the album was over, Spotify transitioned into other pieces from this genre and it was a seamless blend of old and new. This must mean that this record is a classic for being both of its time and timeless — in its own now but also from the future looking back at us and beckoning our ears forward. Answer: Nope, but so close! (4.5 stars, rounded down)

Not much extra to note. I just liked the music. Fit well in the background of a work day.

Interesting album to get lost in

This is an influential electronic album that influenced the likes of Moby and led to a more widespread use of the synthesizer in the 70s. The music features elements of ambient and electropop achieved through the use of of synths and drum machines. The closing track is grounded by a bossa nova beat. Overall I enjoyed the spaciousness of this album and it's strong sense of melody and repetition. It's definitely an album that benefits from multiple deep listens to catch everything.

Blade Runner-esque beats lay throughout this piece.

Liked this a lot more than I expected, definitely will revisit

Really cool and my vibe

This is just a good album. Nice background music. I like that it doesn't have that overly atmospheric sound that you find in a lot of 70s albums. Just a nice piece of electronic music.

Atmospheric synth fest to a tee - a master work because if you ever played with a synth for long enough - you know it’s a dangerous maze and a downward spiral of hours of plinking and plonking on those keys to little effect… But levity aside - I put this record on while running in a quasi sand storm and it was aptly moody and great. And interesting record - as well as not overstaying it’s welcome and interestingly enough - with a hit or two to boot.

Definitely has the ambiance of space. Not a daily listener for me, but good for what it is. Feels like Disney world Space Mountain music or something.

There's no way I would have guessed this was from the 1970s; based on how MUCH electronic music was in every song, I expected at least the 1980s. Each song flowed into the next and I didn't realize I had started the next song until I was about a minute into it. Reminds me of the Stranger Things soundtrack and I really enjoyed it

Enjoyed this. Not normally my sort of thing but there is something compelling about the sound.

Was all over this album when it was first released. Classic of its kind, but I would put any contemporary Isao Tomita album above this. Still very good though

Jean-Michel Jarre est venu distribuer des giffles à tous les petits ratés du mouvement ambient, Brian Eno en tête de liste qui en sortira complétement défiguré.

The Interstellar score that never was

Never heard this album but felt like i'd heard a lot of the music before. Obviously influenced all sorts of music / tv and film soundtracks. I enjoyed it, a solid 4.

I've heard this before, some good ambient electronic stuff. It has a real esoteric old school sci fi feel to it, really creates a "soundscape" that sucks me in. Can't say I could live on it, but it's a great little soundtrack to reading or working etc. 4/5.

Some very friendly and catchy bloops and bleeps. The French Kraftwerk.

I've listened to this in the past before, I believe. Jean Michel Jarre is a classic electronica pioneer. For 1976 this probably blew a ton of people's minds. Still has a lot of nice ear candy moments of bubbly synths and interesting frequencies. There are some kind of dated feeling synthesizer sounds and not quite to my taste, but compositionally it's excellent.

I admit to not being familiar with the works of Jean-Michel Jarre, but this is groovy stuff! Early synths sound so good to me. The sound of waves on the final part of the album transported me to a beach while sitting at my office desk. I wish I had listened to this album while lying down in a dark room.

Wow, surprisingly fresh and lush for an older electronic recording. Lots of texture.

This immediately makes me think of the music Disney played in Epcot in the 80's. It has that quintessential 80's sci-fi sound, which was most likely inspired by it. I can respect how groundbreaking this album must have been. Peaceful, ambient electronic music. I feel like this is one of those albums I have to listen to high in order to fully appreciate.

Pt 5 is my favourite, really relaxing.

It was different at the time. Probably a bit dated now.

Ambiént

there have been a handful of instrumental only albums so far. in a word, this is ethereal. it's an incredibly easy listen; its beauty forces you to slow down, relax. there are no rough or discordant sounds. everything stylized by jarre is done to bring peace to the listener. this album was incredibly ahead of its time with being released in december 1976. there's a timeless aspect about this album; it feels like it was simultaneously created in the seventies, eighties, nineties, and now. the synthesizer and electric sounds were delightfully eighties! the space sounds had a slight E.L.O. feel to them, but perhaps that's what makes the album as a whole sound so timeless.

What an intriguing, ambient listen! The synth work on this album is truly outstanding. Some bands were already playing with synth sounds by this time, but this album has such a prominence to it; there is no doubt in my mind that this fed into and influenced the heavy synth movements of the 1980s. Even by today's standards in a musical world that has renewed interest in synth pop, this stands out. As someone who enjoys the type of new age music that became popular in the 90s and 2000s, I also hear what I can only assume are early developments of that sound in this album. Again, no doubt that many new age artists took their cues from this! Last, there was a very obvious space age sound to this. This is maybe the most unsurprising thing about the album, as artists in the 70s seemed to treat synth and space as synonymous. Still, this feels ahead of its time in that category too -- think bordering on space age synth from movies like Tron. Part 4 was the obvious powerhouse of the album, both relaxing and incredibly engaging, but the entire album was captivating and entertaining.

Sci-fi cheese, but it casts a long shadow.

This record sounded like that feeling you get when the doctor has just told you that you're cancer free for the first time in over two years, but then tries to grope you.

In a lot of ways reminds me of Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield, and Eno. We get six space rock songs glued together with their own themes and hooks. Accessible to all audiences, the synths fill up the room with vast imaginative landscapes of alien planets and space travel. These tracks are filled with curiosity and excitement, especially the fast-paced pop-like "Part 4." There are a few slow parts that don't make it fully suitable for active listening, but it's a cinematic experience with a satisfying start, middle, and end.

Enjoyed this way more than I expected.

8/10. Cover art is pretty cool. Music was also a solid option for listening to while working.

Really enjoyed Oxygene pt 1 and you can clearly hear this album's influence on electronic music today. This album sounds like a stepping stone to greater things for the genre but it is very interesting and well worth a listen. There are hints of "Switched on Bach" in there but also not yet invented genres such as electro and deep tech. 3.5/5

Nice ambient electronica. I wish it had a bit more bass/drum but overall decent, especially considering the time it was produced.

Prefs : Part II, Part IV, Part VI Moins pref: Part III

Very cool atmospheric electronica... that does enough to drive itself forward and capture a groove and vibe and key times. It's remarkable this was recorded in 1976... it holds up well and was a nice surprise in the list.

I saw electronic album and figured I'd be in for a bad time, but the year did give me some hope, and hey, this was far better than I expected! It did something a lot of later electronic albums seem to forget as time goes on, which is to actually do something with your time. If you're going to take up ten minutes of my time, at least have it go somewhere, and this one did, at least moreso than expected. Was it a little goofy sounding at parts? Yes, but in a good way, really feeding into itself. My only wish is that some of the parts were split up a little more. Not removed, but split up, as I really enjoyed the first half of Part 5, but the second half wasn't quite my thing, and it also had a pretty big change, like it was supposed to be two parts but they kept it one to have less parts. Overall, surprisingly good, and if people are comparing this to Eno, then I have hopes when I get to his ambient stuff.

Zo vet!

Going against the grain for me, I really liked Oxygène. It's quirky, it's cool, it's relaxing, it's interesting, it's really well put together, it's not spectacular or a must-listen but easily worthy of a 4/5 because it's the sort of music you can lose yourself in.

This is really cool, I definitely prefer this older style of ambient to stuff like Aphex Twin (which I tend to find a bit more jarring), and also to Kraftwerk, which is just too robotic. This is way smoother (probably shouldn't go too heavy on the French vs German stereotypes, but fits well here!) Feels very 'old sci-fi' in its vibe, which isn't a bad thing, could quite easily get lost in this and would imagine it is excellent fun to listen to whilst tripping. 4/5.

yessir. i mean i just love this kinda stuff, very cohesive and very sexy. only comment is the melodies sometimes feel a little lackluster and since they’re so important it does bring down the experience a bit low 4.5

This is a fantastic, historical album.

Pleasant enough

Música electrónica ambiental. Está bien para trabajar con ella. Un 4.

Tres atmosphérique. It 1976 it sounded like it was from the future, now it IS the future and it still sounds like it's from the future future.

This album is going to be next go to for either farming in a game or getting work done. Very chill, spacious, and otherwordly. Entirely ahead of its time as well, considering this is from the 70s. I can already hear parts of this album that other artists took inspiration from in their own songs. Bizarre and ethereal with driving beats. A new background favorite.

Fascinating, explorative, and transformative for the time! It didn't catch me, but it's lovely in the background.

a really nice futuristic and synth-like album to listen to

Not something I realised I had listened to previously, but quite enjoyable.

Surprisingly good. Like any electronica there is a lot of repetition but Jarre manages to shift gears just enough so it’s never boring.

Maybe I do like electronica?

Cool synth album, relaxing

Standout Tracks: Oxygène Parts 1 & 2

Nice for concentrating during work
