Ziemlich gut! Muss nomal hören

Very 90s...nothing extraordinary. 3/5

Surprisingly decent! Was going to go 4 but don’t think it can stand up to the other 4s I’ve given. Solid indie, some songs having a punky feel.

I really like Pavement, but I think this might actually be my least favourite of their catalogue. Their later sound became more polished and I think many people dislike that, but for me the raw energy only carries this album through Zurich is Stained and then the backhalf is just a lot of the same. The scruffy garage band style on their debut doesn't leave space for Stephen Malkmus' sardonicism to shine through. Fave Tracks: Summer Babe, Trigger Cut, Zurich is Stained 3.4/5

Didn't like it at all, it was droney and boring

3.2 reminded me of nada surf a bit

Pavement’s sound is something like grunge that transitioned to dad rock. It’s got the 90s grunge sound but the lyrics and composition really fits the dad rock vibes. This album isn’t that bad either it’s just a bit dated with the 90s alternative sound. Overall right in the middle. 6.3/10

Odd but not terrible

Too short of relevance.

Interesting sounds that I couldn’t quite place, was stuck between regular alt and dad rock

this is like one of those anecdotes that someone starts relating with great gusto but their energy drops as they realize it sounded funnier, better, in their head and they finally end with "you had to be there to get it"

Grungy 90s indie rock sound. Like the vocals and the guitar sounds. Not sure without the nostalgia this does much for me overall, but not a bad listen.

B- Summer Babe (Winter Version) 3 Trigger Cut / Wounded Kite At :17 3 No Life Singed Her 3 In The Mouth A Desert 3 Conduit For Sale! 3 Zurich Is Stained 3 Chesley's Little Wrists 3 Loretta's Scars 3 Here 3 Two States 3 Perfume-V 3 Fame Throwa 3 Jackals, False Grails: The Lonesome Era 3 Our Singer 3 This was okay.

Classic. Don't love it. But enjoyable enough.

This is on the lower end of average for me. I didn't dislike it but I found little of merit and after one listen I was glad to move on. This kind of slacker rock I think is done better elsewhere and the lack of tunes or good vocals means it's slipped past me without anything to hold onto.

Favorite Tracks: Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite at :17 Summer Babe - Winter Version

Lou Reed, Velvet ish. Some noisy bits.

This is pretty solid in an early 90’s indie rock kind of way. Think Dada meets Uncle Tupelo to try and be the “new Velvet Underground”. I rather like the overall sound, the vocals are alright. Lyrics are meh. The songs are insistent, without being frantic. Some songs, like “Summer Babe” are outstanding. others, like “Conduit for Sale” and “Chelsey’s Little Wrists” are muddled messes. Overall, 3.5/5. I’ll round down to 3, because there’s so much noise.

just ok

Pavement has always been a band I’ve wanted to love more than I actually ever do! Prefer some of the less loud tracks. Can get a bit ‘noisy’ at times. Maybe I’m just an old man these days? 3.4

Pavement are just one of those bands that I can appreciate the music, but the vocals just make it almost unlistenable for me. Which stops me ever wanting to come back to these albums, but I do agree it’s an important album in terms of 90’s alternative music, and deserves to be on the list, just not my 90’s alt band of choice.

Can you treat it like an oil well When it's underground, out of sight And if the sight is just a whore sign Can it make enough sense to me Pretend the table is a trust knot We'll put our labels down, faith is down I'll watch the yarn of twine unravel And you'll never get it back It's what I want, it's what I want It's what I want, twine comes down It's what I want, it's what I want Don't you know, I could make you try Make you try, make you try, make you try I've been crowned the King of Id And Id is all we have, so wait To hear my words and they're diamond-sharp I could open it up And it's up and down Good album, lots of stuff in here thats worth listening to. 3/5

It's alright, quite samey and his vocals can get a bit tiring. Better than most american indie music

I bet this would be good in the right environment

not really my vibe

This is a pretty good album. I think i might like Pavement.

Rating: 5.5/10 Decent album overall. Some songs had excellent melodies and guitar riffs while others were much more bland in comparison. The production is very bad but matches the style with a few songs quite well while being a hindrance to quite a few. I will not be coming back to most of this album but the highlights were very strong. Favorite songs: Summer Babe, Trigger Cut, Here. Worst songs: No Life Singed Her, Chesley's Little Wrists.

some good songs, some boring songs, i enjoyed it closer to the end, overall pretty good, 7/10

Like sonic youth but without the edge. I don't hate it but I wouldn't listen again I don't think

Clear influence on Weezer, but certainly more rough around the edges. Great length, great sound, but a little slow to start. Favorites were In the Mouth A Desert, Loretta's Scars, and Here

Kind of intersting. It was a weird time for that kind of music. However this stands up.

As much acclaim as Pavement gets, this left me flat. Nothing bad about it, just nothing that appealed to me or hooked my interest or got me to move along with it.

Evidently this is a genesis of the indie rock sound. To me, it sounds like the noise of Sonic Youth brought to the hooks of Bob Mould. It’s wide ranging sounds and snippet like approach certainly inspired quite a few after.

Another Pavement album. As expected.

Now I know who Graham Coxon was listening to in the late 90s. Not bad and worth another run around.

per spotify, this is the defining band of the slacker alt-rock genre of the 90s. very easy listen and enjoyable.

What a bunch of slackers!

Never heard of pavement but I really had fun listening to this

I’ve never heard this band before but I feel like I’ve heard this album hundreds of times

Sounded similar to something else I know.

Never listened to Pavement previously and liked the rawness.

Album 310 of 1001 Pavement - Slanted And Enchanted Rating : 3 / 5 I enjoyed it but couldn't really tell you much about what I listened to. Nothing really stood out. Likely more there than I pulled out from one listen.

Pavement themselves are not my favorite. But they do belong on this list. I would say they are more influential than the Velvet Underground. Alternative has lasted over 30 years at this point.

Interesting album, sounds like a mix of Weezer and Nirvana Top tracks: Jackals, False Grails: The Lonesome Era

Very average

Bijvoorbeeld 'Two States'.

At first I was intrigued by the style, but this isn't for me. It has energy, but I found myself wanting to listen to something different by the end of the album. I had not heard of this band or album before.

Mid. Wasn't too much a fan even though I was trying. - 5/10

It was aight I guess. Pretty tolerable as far as punk metal/rock goes. 6/10

Но поставлю три за песню, которая состояла из повторения слов i'm trying i'm trying.

Wish I had know about Pavement before now, def my jam for early 90's California alt rock. That said, the album was top heavy for good songs and then everything else. 3.5 stars

Lacks the rousing, energetic chorus that I'm looking for to power my aerobic workouts.

As whooshy as I liked it to be.

Meh. They're alt-pioneers and influenced a movement but this isn't it. Half-cpooked with a few good songs. Lyrica and instrumentation is 90s-passe other than that.

I found this a little too grinding on my nerves for some reason. Not my favorite. But I’d like to give them another try at some point.

I enjoyed this

It was a fun listen

Post-grunge garage. I enjoyed it

A pretty good indie rock album, it’s a high three for me. It didn’t really captivate me in any big way, but it’s still good music, I liked it.

It's ok. It's quite murky and rough around the edges, and his vocals are definitely an acquired taste. There's enough variation on display and a few standout tracks, but I wouldn't revisit.

Curb crawler.

OK but nothing that really interested me. Way too much distortion.

some elements of a decent album

65/100

Not exactly sure what to make of this - badass, Velvet Underground-meets-the-Stooges rock coexists with some proper dreck. In general, I like it when the tempo and the volume are turned up. 'Trigger Cut' and 'Perfume V' are good examples of tracks that fit the bill. 'Two States' is great, if only because it sounds like the glam rock stomp of the Sweet in their pomp. For all its faults, it's an admirably wonky, alive sounding record, so I'm happy to give this a hearty three stars.

Nice indie laidback sound. liked it

3.2/5 Half the album sucks and half the album is pretty good. Not quite sure if they're trying to be punk or grunge or something entirely different, and that's my issue with this album - it doesn't have a strong identity. It does have some pretty strong bass and drum lines though - I hope those guys get laid a lot, they deserve it. There are a few songs (the popular ones by Spotify listens) which come across as melodramatic and kinda fucking lame. I don't mind lame - Ween and Nirvana are lame and they're fucking great. But they're not whiny about it (even though Kurt was massive whiner).

This completely makes sense to include, as it was an influential indie record in the early 90s that went on to significantly shape the sound of other bands/records of the decade.

Good - need to listen to more Pavement

Eh I have mixed feelings about Pavement. They have some solid songs but some stuff just bores me. Bonus irrational thoughts: I always thought that they were a less interesting Sonic Youth (yep, irrational) I also always got a feeling of annoying smugness from them that puts me off a bit. (Also irrational but I told you so)

man i wish i liked pavement. and i tried REALLY hard in college.

got better on the 2nd listen summer babe trigger cut in the mouth a desert conduit for sale zurich is stained two states jackals, false grails

I wanted to like this more. Just not as good as some contemporaries. (Manic StrPreachers, Pulp). Just ok indie rock

Sludgy and disquieting. An interesting debut.

Why is there more than one Pavement album on this list? This one is at least better than their other album that I've reviewed, "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain". Favourite songs: Trigger Cut/Wounded Kite at :17, Summer Babe, In the Mouth a Desert, Zurich is Stained Least favourite songs: No Life Singed Her, Conduit For Sale!, Chelsey's Little Wrists, Loretta's Scars, Here, Two States, Fame Throwa, "Jackals, False Grails: The Lonesome Era" 3/5

3.5. Might be higher. Might be lower. This one I need to listen to again. I was a huge fan of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, so this should be a slam dunk for me. But wasn't. Of course, I was listening to that album around when it came out, and maybe just the slacker 90s ethics spoke directly to me at the time. Everything kind of tossed off, sloppy, cool for its lack of care. I'm a different person now though. Anyway, this album is D\deliberately offkilter, imprecise tunings. Non genred songs. Two chord strummers where, due to the odd tuning, the guitar player has no idea what two chords they are. There are hints of shoegaze in a couple of songs, but this feels mostly original. This album does not feel overburdened by its own ambition. Effortless singing and playing in not the traditional sense of "effortless". So yes, I think I like it, in an opposite-of-dream-theater kind of way. But maybe I will like it more on repeated listens. I seem to remember that I had this album, but it never grabbed me. I feel like its reputation is that of the best Pavement album. Not to me. Not yet

They picked a great name for this band. Because this album does feel like hitting a rock on your skateboard and skidding your legs, arms, and face on the pavement of a parking lot. And I mean that in a good way. It's raw, unadulterated. and simple fun. It sounds rough around the edges and has a very lo-fi feel, as if it were recorded in Stephens mom's garage. This album doesn't feel like it's meant to be played on a good pair of headphones, but blasted on a speaker during a backyard cookout. There is a very bright and upbeat feeling to every song. The recording is loose and playful, but not to a point where it feels like the musicians don't know what they are doing. My issue with this album is that these things are all great, but as a debut, this album doesn't really do anything super groundbreaking. This isn't really a record with that kind of goal though. Maybe it's an issue with me, but half this album's track list is rather average. Nothing starts to hit until "Loretta's Scars", and aside from "Here", everything after that song is really great. But the first seven songs don't do anything particularly special to make me remember them. This album is just very backloaded, which is okay, but it means the album is only half as good as it could be. The text on this album's cover looks as if it were carved into the side of a tree. And I think that imagery is perfect for Pavement's debut.

Indie rock.

Good 90s alternative that sounds very influential.

As someone who listens primarily to post-hardcore/emo - this album definitely sounds like early influence.

Very nice and perfect background music, has some passionate songs but never too over the top. Helping me focus for physics!

It’s ok

Above average. 3/5

The good parts are really good, the bad parts are a mess. There are quite a few good parts, but also quite a few bad parts. I like it, but I can imagine it's not for everyone. I like it a lot better than Malkmus' other SIlver Jews that I reviewed before. Favorite song: Conduit for sale.

Really solid

Not a bad rock album

Enjoyed the first listen through, but the second and third weren't as captiving. Really though it would go the other way. Bit lo-fi, bit pixie-ish, other bands in there also. Might revisit if I'm ever in the right mood for more lo-fi

Aware of pavement as a very influential band on all the stuff I like but never really listened to them. This was alright, reminded me of sonic youth, pixies and other low fi indie bands where I feel theres a really good band there but for whatever reason it doesn't grab me. Think it's probably just a little too thrown together, the more polished stuff might be more up my street.

So, for starters, this is a band that could never have existed without the Velvet Underground. I'll also compare it to Wilco, but with vocals that aren't as tuneful, and tunes that aren't as well written. This isn't bad, in fact, I love both of those bands, but it does feel a bit derivative listening to it now in 2023.

Its ok 3/5

Yea not bad

HL: "In the Mouth a Desert", "Here", "Zurich is Stained", "Loretta's Scars" The best songs outweigh the worst ones (I counted 3 tracks I actively disliked) It's amiable enough that I understand why others love it, but the super-dry (like an overboiled egg) guitar sound isn't my favourite thing in the world. Idk- it might grow on me too, too early to say. 2.75/5, aka 3 stars July 5, 2023

It's good. Nothing different, really. NIce sound.

A lo-fi, college production that seems earnest and original. There's a number of songs that really carry well, Trigger Cut, Here, and Two States. Unfortunately, there's a pretty good portion that is more experimental or odd and makes me want to push through it quicker. Definitely an interesting listen.

Not terrible but not amazing either

I've heard of Pavement and was expecting something more industrial. Again this reminded me some mid-90's grunge-like pop (Weezer) or even a bit of Joy Division.

Pavement still aren’t completely clicking for me, as much as they seem to tick a lot of the right boxes. That said, I got more out of this than Crooked Rain x2. In The Mouth A Desert really hit the spot, and so did a couple of others. I would listen to this one again. It’s decent enough after two plays through but I reckon it has more to reveal. 3 / 3.5

Indie rock. Ni fu ni fa.

There's a DIY aspect to this album that I hate. This would be a pretty solid album if they just tightened the screws a bit. I have a feeling that the DIYness is the allure to it. I can see hipsters are telling their weird friends: "these guys sound kinda bad! You'll love it". There are some pretty okay songs but I really think these guys can do better. 3

3.5 I know these guys are indie rock legends, but before this I only knew them for Cut Your Hair (which was on the Jackass Number Two soundtrack for some reason). While that song’s not on this album, a lot of enjoyable stuff is - there’s something about frontman Stephen Malkmus’ style of half-singing/half-talking I dig and feel gives a distinct sound to the group. So, as someone who generally enjoys classic alternative rock and unique vocals, I thought this was going to become a quick new favorite of mine, but ultimately I found it to be more good than it is great. I started noticing a little bit more nuance in the songwriting when I gave a second listen, with Conduit for Sale! jumping out as punk-esque favorite and Here jumping out as a mellow favorite, but still, even after a further third listening, I don’t feel like I have much else to say. A lot of this runs together, and while nothing is unenjoyable or boring, there’s not a ton that’s remarkable either. I have nothing bad to say though, so I would say this is a strong 3.5. It’s sad that these were one of those groups whose critical acclaim never quite translated into commercial success, but I’m pretty sure they had a song go viral on TikTok a couple years back, so they have that going for them. Also, this album totally had random moments where the music totally cut out, right? I’m not going crazy? Right?

3.6 - I don’t catch the same buzz off this slacker rock. At best, I think they do a good job of tempering some of the indie rock motifs of their time. There’s a little noisy fuzz guitar reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine on “Loretta’s Scars”, jagged guitar soundscapes like Sonic Youth, and drily delivered poetry similar to Silver Jews. Unfortunately the sum doesn’t nearly live up to the parts.

Kinda jangly and whiney and annoying at times. But decent at other times. IDK what to think of Pavement. I don't hate them but I definitely don't like them. They're like a 2.5 but I'll give them the 3 here.

Pavement leden) frontman David Berman.

I’m generally favourable towards Malkmus and friends but this album is a bit mediocrely poor.

Pavement is a band that I’ve discovered through this list and has also grown on me a fair bit. I never thought much of the first albums I got of theirs but now I can at the very least appreciate them. This album wasn’t as good as the one with stop breathing on it but it was still alright. High high 3

Seems like an important album for the genre, but it's a bit to 'lazy' for me (not meant in a derogatory way). Probably won't really listen to it again.

Music is good. Vocals are a little whiny and all over the place.

Pretty good!!

Look, I know that Pavement are regarded as important & influential & all that other stuff. But they’re not a band I’ve ever listened to. I just gave this album a couple of listens & quite enjoyed it, but the first thing I noticed was that Malkmus’s voice reminded me of John McCrea, the lead singer of Cake. Now there are a few big differences between these 2 bands - one is that Cake are not at all regarded as important or influential. The other is that Cake had Number 1 singles & platinum albums, which Pavement were never going to do. So does it make me a bad person that I’d rather listen to Cake? Gee, I don’t know. I know that they were one of the few bands that my 10-year-old son & I were able to bond over at the time that Fashion Nugget was all over the radio & just before he was infected with the hip-hop virus. Anyway, I still enjoyed this Pavement album. Summer Babe’s a great opener. I love the dialogue in the background of Conduit For Sale! And I really enjoyed it when they got rocky in Two States. Three stars.

Vraiment sauvé par "Here"

22nd March 2023 Listened on the drive to the office. Showcase at the cinema then drive back for Rita dress. If the velvet underground and the strokes had a live child it would be these guys. 3.5 if I could.

This one definitely kept my attention the entire time. It was raw, dirty, and downright gritty in places and I really liked it. Do I think there was some filler? Yes. Do i think some songs could’ve been fleshed out a bit better? Also yes, but it was fun overall and definitely deserves a spin.

Standouts: Summer Babe Others: In the Mouth of a Desert, Here, Two States, Our Singer Rating:

14 songs in 40 minutes, short, sharp, not sweet. Fave track Summer Babe (Winter Version).

Nice. Sounds like a slick version of Sonic Youth.

Not great, not terrible. Maybe they should have found an actual vocalist. Best track: Here

a weak 3, forgettable

It was good. I know people who are big fans but not really me.

quite the same song all the album long. And a little bit boring

Nice listen, very 90s, 3.5

Pretty grungy. Would listen to a different album of theirs

Cool for the genre

I remember when these guys first came around the UK press called them an American Fall which annoyed M E Smith and S Malkmus. They are pleasingly different. Uneven chaotic songs with curious lyrics. A lot of it works but it will repel those that need more polish in their production. Perhaps not as good as the tighter follow up but it knows a tune. It is however too erratic at times

I felt that there was some kind of inside joke to this band that I was not in on. I mean, I had heard "Stereo" a few times, which made me think they didn't take themselves too seriously. I just don't what to make of this. It reminds me of NIrvana, but at the same time with someone who had a bit more refined vocals. I want to say the music seems more varied, but by doing so it lost its focus. It became like it was all over the place and I didn't get the point (or was it that I didn't get the joke?). There weren't really any songs with hummable melodies, which would make it tough to go to one of their concerts, I would think. Not really a lot of singalong moments. So yeah, a bit of a head-scratcher for me. Maybe I need to listen to it again. At least it's under 40 minutes, so it's not plausible to do a relisten. Maybe.

It's just too much sound and distortion to handle. I feel it's always the same for me with bands like Pavement (e.g., Fugazi, At the Drive-In). I hear one song on its own and think oh that's cool. And then I go to listen to more of their work and it just piles on, very much the same, and feels a little bland. They do some unique experimentation and respect for that. But it felt like a slog to get through the album. And unlike when I hear one song of theirs out of the blue, after listening to the whole album I don't want to go searching for more.

It starts off great then it gets unlikable and wired 3/5.

legalzinho mas umas atordoantes

It remains interesting all the way through without ever getting memorable

This was a standard grunge album of the early 90’s. Nothing outstanding but nothing bad either

Indie rock.

sonic youth + smashing pumpkins + garage

The sound kind of reminded me of Lou Reed. But not as good

Great and disjointed

Not bad not bad

A lot going on here, almost to the point that it’s overwhelming

90s and grungy so yea

Do not recall, still waiting, feeling a little nerves. Overall positive

Hade sina stunder, helt klart.

Has ever an album title better captured its contents? “Summer Girl” and “Zurich” are very good, "Here" about as earnest and tender as SM can do, and the discordant and spicy "Loretta’s Scars” nearly sublime (in right listening environment). The tossed-off vibe is here both a weakness and strength (as it would be for what followed). Far too much ("No Life," "Conduit," Chelsey's") seems no better than throwaway half-jokes, even by loose slacker standards. I suspect they never thought this would take off the way it did and were thus conflicted (mainly about how seriously to take themselves and their audience) for the rest of their career. Do they think they should have tried harder here? One wonders, as one does also about what might have been. Should they have leaned darker and become more like a US version of the Fall or a softer-edged Fugazi? Or, stuck to the silliness ala Camper Van Beethoven or the Dead Milkmen? Might Pavement best be viewed as the precise midpoint between such clusters? And who’s more effective in the end – Pavement or Silver Jews? (One prefers the latter.)

Was good, not too spectacular

I don't know, man. I mean, it's alright. I enjoyed a lot of it. It was super out in left field for an album released in '92 and that's pretty cool, I guess. But it's really noisy, isn't it? And not always in that, "we're punk and can't be bothered to worry about tone so just suck it up and deal, you wankers" kind of way. It's often noisy in a, "I have no idea how to guitar" kind of way. And that's frustrating after a while. It's not BAD bad like many albums on this list. It's not so bad that I'm constantly reminded that I'm listening to it because I have to. It's just annoying enough that I forgot that there was a reason I was listening to it and found myself reaching for the controls to listen to something else before remembering that I needed to finish the album.

Liked it.

Nothing so much different from ordinary independent 90's rock with the addition of a little bit more screaming. Probably it was kind of revolutionary for 1992. Nothing so bad, but not memorable!

decent alt rock punk rock album

Indie rock when indie rock was good. All of the comparisons to current bands gets lost on the fact that this style of music was relatively unheard of, with the exception of Pixies, which is blown away by Pavement. 3.5/5.

4/20/22

Got through it ok. It was ok

Just OK. Sounded like the an average 90's alternative band...nothing special to me.

I love me some fuzz but this was largely background noise with some occasional ear pleasing hooks. Bless ‘em

Rating: 6/10

Some interesting songs

Heard glimpses of emo, and that was the best part. The rest was meh. Feeling generous with a 3.

Rocks a bit.

Not bad, actually.

Pretty good I guess, but also sort of generic indie/90s alternative rock. Nothing bad about it, but nothing super special either. A bit too cutesy for my liking. 3 stars.

Some decent grungey/noisey rock. Sounds like an early version of some more recent similar stuff I enjoy

Never got them at the time. Retrospectively, this reads as a less-stoned Dinosaur Jr or a less-wanky Sonic Youth.

A noisy, rambling 39-minute delight. Probably one of the best debut albums I have heard in this genre. As a front man Stephen Malkmus runs the gambit from bemused to insouciant to caterwauling, which is simultaneously a lot of fun and way too much. Musically, the album rocks, jangles, rattles, burns. The songs are all nice, crunchy, compact little numbers, most clocking in at 3:00 or less. The band toes the line between melodic and noisy, deliberately teetering over it at times to interesting effect. Lyrically both clever and absurd. Fave Songs: Two States, Here, Our Singer, Jackals, Summer Babe - Winter Version, Zurich is Stained, Perfume-V, Trigger Cut/Wounded Kite At: 17, In the Mouth a Desert

Has a definite Central Valley sound to it, one I wish I became familiar with early in life. That insight is one I developed when listening to Grandaddy for the first time. Things get markedly more interesting toward the back of the record; Until then there's little that really grabs me.

Never heard of them a bit off kilter grunge.. No bad.

Not bad

Didn’t enjoy this one that much, but I feel I might enjoy it more with time.

Ok... a little muddy.

I never really got into Pavement and still not a fan, but this definitely had some great songs on here like Here, Summer Babe and Jackels. Not bad but the distortion gets a bit too much at times to enjoy it.

Pretty standard stuff

"Two States" - that's why I listened this album.

Not my fav pavement album. There are hints of what they'd become here, but it's missing some of the cohesion and cleverness of an album like Brighten the Corners

3.5, actually enjoyed this, started a bit heavy but then sounded very Pixies. Might get more into it with a few listens

Maybe slightly unfairly for an album I know and enjoy but I don't feel well so...

Generally I respect what Pavement does, I thought this album was pretty good, though I do get exhausted of the "singing" after a few songs - better in small doses.

I have a couple songs in my liked list that are by Pavement so I was excited to listen to this. Some of the songs I'm not super into like "Conduit For Sale!" and "Chelsey's Little Wrists", which I found annoying. Other songs like "Summer Babe", "Zurich Is Stained", and "Here" are that nice chill lazy indie-rock sound I associated with them. It just barely goes from a 3.5 rounded down to 3, wavered between a 3 and 4.

Pretty good punk.

Another band which I neglected for ages, but always knew was there. It's like indie-rock with early grunge guitars. Guess it takes a few spins to really settle in.

Mixed feelings. Some songs I like and some I don't. I have to listen to the band more often. (6,5/10) Favorite Tracks: Here

A decent indie rock album. Slower at some points, which offers a nice break from the rest of the album which plays fast and loud.

This sounds like a generic 90s band. I couldn't sing you a single song off of it - nothing really memorable.

I like Pavement and I like this album, but I feel like they were in a lot of ways about experimenting and messing around. They switched genres and styles like a great bar band, brought their own flavor to it all, but there's also not a lot for me that really elevates them to any transcendent moments. That's not a bad thing, they are great and really paved the way for a lot of other music, just hard to rate them too high when viewed among so many classics.

I knew one song by this group that I absolutely love, but all my hype kind of fell down listening to this album. It surely has some really good songs, but nothing extraordinarie for me.

I kinda prefer the rainy life-cul-de-sac pavement instead of this overconfident shoegazey pavement, but still enjoyed it.

My first introduction to this band and album. Given the years this was recorded and released (start of the 90s), this sounds to me like a link in the musical chain stretching from 70s punk and 80s indie rock and thrashy stuff (even a little of the pre-punk 60s; not sure what the term is for bands like Velvet Underground) and 90s grunge and so on. Some of the tracks are too thrashy for my own personal taste (nothing against it; just not my thing) but I definitely appreciate how good this band is. Some of the tracks are very much too my liking and I can imagine myself coming back to hear them again. I get why this is on the list: for its time, it was very inventive and counter-trendy.

Pretty decent vibes, didn't blow me away. Deserves a relisten

Never gave pavement a chance. Glad they were on this list. Very enjoyable.

Some solid 90’s college rock. There are definitely some amazing gems here, but also a lot of bits that could use a good amount of refinement.

Quite liked this.

Solid 3 here.

Bit pop punky. Not my thing but I appreciate what they are trying to do

Didn’t enjoy this anywhere near as much as I have in the past.

Fun listen. I had more to say yesterday - oops!

Pavement me gustan, pero no me entusiasman. Prefiero sus discos posteriores

This is one of thise bands people tell me to listen to. Today I actually listened to a whole album and I understand why...very good and reminds me of a lot of indie bands I enjoy like modest mouse. However I'm not sure if I'll revisit for another listen.

Not really for me.

Didn’t hate - reminded me of a time in my life lol

Very 90s, very indie. Not what I would call "singing." Lots of attitude, noisy guitars.

I'd like to give this a 3.5/5 and not a 3. I thought their indie rock style was impressive. Worth a revisit or perhaps a look into their later albums

Very 90s. Another band I never knew, but I liked the combination of genres and I heard some Weezer sounds in there

not my favorite pavement album but they still keep their sound rly well

Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 11/20 Innovation: 15/20 Bangers: 5/20 Emotional response: 13/20 =57 Yeah. Good and solid, not a bad listen.

Nu Dad Rock

Not bad, not bad at all. I think in 1994 this would have been a very different and exciting album amongst other grundy music but it's hard to listen and not just think of more seminal bands from that era.

Indie rock standard

Probably good for what it is, but I just don't dig it.

14 Songs in 39 Minuten? Die Musik lässt sich gut hören. Teilweise sehr gut!

Very 90s alt-rock, nice jams if you want to be taken back to a time of Tony Hawk Pro Skater on PS1.

Good alb. Bigger fan of crooked rain

Ok I guess. Really not my taste

1992. Key Songs: Summer Babe, Conduit For Sale!

closer to a 2.7 maybe? I enjoyed parts of it

I hate to be mean, but this is a fairly forgettable album. I couldn't hum a single song from it, and it's just kinda there. Nothing notable, flashy, or innovative to me. But also not like a complete mess so there's that compliment

Look, I play out of tune! I'm so punk... 4/10

Just as dull as the other Pavement album on this list. I get that I may not be aware of how influential they were, but as I didn’t have any interest in those circles why would I care? Holds very little appeal for me.

There is sort of a Nirvana ish sound to them at time but unfortunately I’ve never been a big grunge fan. 2.5

Annoying to listen to at times, but there’s some cool stuff here and there.

eh not my favorite. here is still the only one i like on this album

Hate this guy's voice. 2/5.

Slanted and Enchanted is a good album name but not a good album. Pretty slapped together sound with a few moments of cohesion. I guess this is what the early 90s sounded like. 1.57 stars for noisy Weezer.

Gear: 64 Audio Duo Artwork: 🎹🖍️🟥 Production (Luxe & Reduxe 2002): 😐👍🆗 Music: 🎨🔢🤔 Rating: 🛣️(🛣️)/5

In 1992 I was very disinterested in this Pavement record In 2026 I am only somewhat disinterested in this Pavement record Difference being, there are now some songs I can sit through, even nodding my head & tapping my foot a little Maybe three, out of the fourteen songs in this collection But I wont be rushing back to listen to this again any time soon

It was ok. Nothing special. Meh.

Idk not for me

Pavement is one of these bands that i should like, but for some reason it has never really appealed to me. Lazy songwriting and too many fillers on this album.

Not shit, just bad album

Was initially excited for this one, but then it started and I did not really like this one. I like Pavement, but maybe more their later stuff.

Pre Listen: Never heard of these fellas, but that album cover would look really cool if someone didn't doodle all over it. Lower than usual expectations going in. Notable Tracks: Here - The best track on the album methinks. I don't really love it, but I think it has the best sound compared to the rest, especially from the vocalist. Conduit For Sale | Chesley's Little Wrists - Tied for my least favorite tracks on the album. Messy punk-babble. The vocalist keeps saying "I'm Trying!", but I'M trying to see how. Post Listen: About what I expected. This album really tiptoes the line of Alt Rock, Punk, and Emo Rock. I occasionally enjoy 2 out of those 3 genres, so I have somewhat mixed feelings about the album as a whole. The instrumentation is pretty good overall, serviceable on average, pretty cool at best. The songs are all about the right length for what they're going for, and the melodies are ok. The sound mixing was wack on some songs, but my big gripe with this album comes from the vocalist. The vocalist sounds incredibly similar to Lou Reed in my opinion, specifically from Lou's 'Transformer' album. I gave that album a 1/5, mostly due to Lou's vocals sounding bored, apathetic, or even drunk at times. I feel the same way about this band's vocalist. What's perhaps worse is I *know* the guy can sing, from songs like "Here". Unlike Lou's album, I did like the instrumental works here. The vocals drag it all down, to the point I'd be embarrassed if some of the songs on here played on my playlist. Many such cases, 2/5.

Well that was boring. Not sure what sets these guys apart.

I listen to all these albums on half decent headphones. With some albums this enhances them a lot, with others it seems to show them up. Here the music just sounds at times tinny and empty. I can hear how this band will have been influential on a lot of the indie music that followed in the decades after but for me it is lacking something. It's like a band pretending to be the Pixies but not as good. Still not awful though.

Nor really a fan. Perhaps it has merit in being an influence to it's genre and early on in the development, but it doesn't move me.

Less nerdy Weezer

Leuk idee maar ik voel m nie

doet het echt niet voor mij :'(

Helt ok.. men inte en 3a

My least favorite indie band of the 90s fails to strike again. Making something that intentionally sucks does not make it less sucky. I might be more charitable if they were not such uncharitable dudes themselves.

fav songs: here sloppy, lo-fi, rough 30/100

I understand historically this is an important album that paved (pun intended) the way for the indie rock genre but nothing here really grabbed me. Just kind of sounds like early generic alt rock.

Terrible noise. Do not recommend.

I remember a Pavement vs. Smashing Pumpkins chapter in the book Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me but I never actually took the time to go back and listen to Pavement. Based on this album, I honestly don't see the comparison at all. The Pumpkins had way more muscle, melody, and presence. This mostly sounded like a band that couldn't decide whether it wanted to sing, mumble, or just yell off key for 40 minutes. There were a couple decent songs, especially the opener, but most of the album just got on my nerves.

I do not care about this. I kept wanting to skip songs which is something I promised myself I wouldn't do while doing this "challenge". All the songs - the instruments, the singing, the mix felt small. I cannot explain it better. I kept waiting for the songs to exit the old radio effect. The only semi-interesting songs were: - Zurich is Stained - Here

I do find something about pavement's arrogant and superior attitude despite barely being able to play their instruments or sing interesting for about half of a song. But the novelty runs out quickly.

Disappointing. I've always wondered what this one sounded like but never ventured in. I don't the sounds contained within. I can't get with the lo-fi production. Some of the guitar playing is interesting and I can hear the influence it had an loads of indie bands, but I think it lacks tunes.

It's fine until the shouting begins. So many bands on this list would be hugely improved by hiring a singer who can actually sing

I love a good 90s guitar riff. That feedback and reverb just tickle my brain in the best way. That being said, the album didn't really grab me and was kind of forgettable in the end. I don't hate that I listened to this, but I also will likely not remember any of the songs.

Like if weezer was a lil more dorky and emo

The vocals did not put me in a good mood. I was so glad the end finally came.

Slacker rock (Post-punk, garage rock, noise pop, grunge lite, call it what you will) has its fans. I am not one. No offense to fans or the band, but it doesn’t sound professional and that is probably the main attraction for them. I actually enjoy some music with the same aesthetic (I owned “Generic Flipper” for chrissake) but in that case I want energy. A band that sounds like they’ve chugged a beer, not hit a bong.

I tried to like these guys in college and it just didn't take. I don't hate it, I just don't see what the big deal is/was. People went NUTS over these guys. I tended to agree with the great philosopher Butthead: "They need to try harder." I bought this CD back then (would have been 1993 or 1994) and I just now realized I haven't seen it in at least 25 years. Did I lose it? Was it stolen? Do I still have it somewhere? At any rate I have somehow survived without it. Listening this time, I think "Here" and "Two States" were my favorite tracks. I don't know if it just wore me down, but by the end of the album everything sounded OK. I don't know, I think I'd give this a 2.5?

I only know through Pavement through Harness Your Hopes, which my siblings play a lot in the house • I like Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kit at :17 (weird title). There are a few discordant sounding chords that are cool • I’m not a fan of the shouting in No Life Singed Her • I dig the instrumental of In the Mouth a Desert, but I can’t get into the vocals. The post-chorus/outro is very nice though. • Conduit for Sale is a similar case, I see that not liking the vocals will probably be a running theme for the album. This song in particular really reminds me of The Fall, with Mark E Smith’s vocals (which I also wasn’t a fan of) • Here is actually a very nice song • What even is Fame Throwa • Jackals has some cool sounds going on I’ll be honest, I was pretty glad when this album finished. A lot of the instrumental content was cool, and with another vocalist I could see this being an album I’d really dig. Unfortunately, it does not have another vocalist, and I’m not a fan of this one. He’s able to sing in a way that I like (Harness Your Hopes and even a few moments on this album), but I can’t get into this. The first half of the album was stronger in my opinion, but the back half did have its moments. Favourite song: Here

nothing special to me

The funny thing is that quite a few of the artists I love cite Pavement as a massive influence and yet... I find them unexciting, messy sounding and Mr Malkumus has a voice that sounds like he's purposely trying to not sound good and all with the delivery of a flat tire. Granted, that's probably the point is to be messy and so cool that you aren't trying. I grew up in the time that these guys were all over the magazines (thats how old I am) getting sucked off by all the critics. I don't get the adoration then and I definitely don't get it now. Its not terrible so I wont 1 star it but its not good either. 2 stars all day every day.

Pavement is a band I felt like I’ve heard of forever. I even know Steve Malkmus is the band’s leader/singer/songwriter/guitatist. They are like the gods of indie rock. But, I don’t think I've ever heard an album by them, so I'm kind of excited to see what the fuss is about. I later discovered I was confusing Pavement with the Replacements, but I got most of what I thought I knew right. sloppily Okay, track one is Summer Babe (Winter Version), and I think I’ve heard the opening of the song. I like the sound of the guitars, but like a lot of indie music in the 90s, it sounds like the singer is bored and would rather be doing anything than recording a song. But that was the style. Track 2 is Trigger Cut/Wounded Kite at :17, and I see a pattern forming. The band is playing sloppy, which is a style, and the guitars are either out of tune or they’re playing them as though they were out of tune. By the sound of the music, I’m assuming the lyrics are supposed to be poetry? I’m not sure. There’s a reason this band didn’t become huge, but kept a passionate cult following. Track 3 is No Life Singed Her and it’s a little punkier with more screaming vocals. I like this song. It sounds like a Soundgarden song, though not as fat and heavy. And, of course, the song I really dig is just two minutes long. That’s always the way, isn’t it? Track 4 is In the Mouth a Desert and I really dig this song. It’s still sloppy, but it’s a bit more polished. You can hear the vocals clearly. The guitars are still loud, but more behind the vocals instead of even with them. It’s got a good melody. Track 5 is Conduit for Sale! And it opens with Malkmus yelling, “I’m trying!” over and over again, but it sounds like the band is not. The guitars are out of tune, and the sloppiness is in full effect. But then it pulls together near the middle. I think this album is one you need to spend some time with and listen to four or five times to truly see the genius. Though some will wonder why they would put themselves through so much torutre to only maybe end up liking an album. That’s the breaks. Track 6, Zurich is Stained, is out of tune again. But it’s a pretty good song. I mean, if Iggy Pop's The Idiot sounds evergreen, this album sounds like 1992. This is as 1990s as Prince is the 1980s. Track 7 is our first instrumental, well, there’s some nonsense yelling, but for the most part it's instrumental. It’s called Chelsy’s Little Wrists. It wasn’t bad. I’d say it's definitely better than most of the tracks so far. I think I’m going to stop track by tracking until I hit a song that makes me stop and take notice. Track 9, Here, is a bit of a ballad. It’s a little softer. The singer seems to be trying, at least as much as he is able. It’s a nice little song. Okay, I finished the album, and I thought it did get better on the back half, or I just got nostalgic for 1990s indie rock. However, I don’t think I’m going to try to listen to this four to five times to see if I can be fully won over. However, if you like 90s indie rock and have never heard of Pavement, then you should listen to this album. And others may like it too, but for me it was too sloppy, too out of tune, and kind of too loud. It pains me to say that, but I’m old now, so it may be part of becoming a fogey.

Lo-fi indie rock. At times the fuzziness reminds me of Sonic Youth but this has more of a quirky vibe. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals. Slacker rock seems like a good label because it sounds like he's intentionally not putting any effort in. A pet peeve of mine is artists picking pretentious sounding titles that are unrelated to the lyrics or music, and that describes half of this album. Overall it wasn't terrible but I didn't find much to like. I bet I would have enjoyed it more as a teenager.

This really isn't my kind of music, so it's difficult to be totally objective. Two stars because it's not terrible. I just don't like it.

Demasiado "Cool" para mi jeje

I can see why MES was so miffed / convinced that this lot were just trying to be The Fall. The last track here (yes, I made it to the end) is the beat from Hip Priest, although the rest of the song is nowhere near as good. Quirky indie college radio stuff that made little sense to me. Another band that seems to be trying hard to be 'weird'.

Too much noise for me this morning.

Didn't listen to it yet.sorry

To be fair, this album significantly improved after a horrible first impression, but it still didn’t become good; only tolerable. Even the “better” songs were boring, both in its lyricism and melodies. It was a high 2, for sure, but I genuinely can’t bring myself to give it a 3. The guitar solos were good.

Too much noise, not enough music. Favorite Track: No Life Singed Her

Some songs end quite abruptly, which makes me think my headphones have died for a second. Fave track: Here

If any of you have coached youth sports in the past, such as youth basketball, you know that there are the kids who are the stars of the team. The ones who are just more talented and get it. There are still others who are good kids and decent players - call them the rest of the starters. They can dribble, pass, and shoot, but are nothing spectacular. From there, you have others who are average to mediocre, those who understand the game but have limited talent for it. That's all fine, it's part of the game. Then there are the kids who try really, really hard but just don't have any handle on the game at all. Sure, they get in and hustle. And they repeatedly call for the ball. When they do finally get it, they shoot a shot that rarely goes in. More often than that, it's an airball. That last kid is who this band is. So, 2 stars. One for being in the game. One for giving it effort. But no more, and certainly none for being any good at it.

I once assisted a production course, and one thing the teacher told us is that, no matter how well anyone sing of how loud someone can be, not adding a bit of reverb will kill a lot or even all the energy of the voice. At first I was a bit sceptical, but this record really proved that my teacher was right, as the vocals in this record sound flat, despite of any cool melodies or how much the singer screams. And if the poor production wasn't enough, I wasn't digging the ideas behind the tracks. This record comes to me like a way less interesting and messy Dinosaur Jr. or Sonic Youth project. It is very noisy and shares some of the same type of comfortable melodies that characterizes the slacker rock side of the mentioned groups. Best example I can give is "No Life Signed Her" vocal line being very reminiscent of "Total Trash" by Sonic Youth. However, it lacks power. Maybe the production has a lot to do with it, but I didn't find anything particularly impactful, regardless of how passionate they might sound. Nonetheless, there was a particular moment I really liked and is the very melancholic and beautiful sounding "Here". I hope that, with this review, I don't sound as a person who only likes its music with hyper clean production. I don't. I love records with lo-fi sound, like "Sister" from Sonic Youth, which I reviewed not so long ago or "Deathconsciousness" by Have a Nice Life which is notorious for is incredibly cheap production. Nevertheless, in this instance, I think it is the major turning point for me.

Meh, sort of average rock for me. Like a poor man's Weezer at times?

Thiught my headphones died during fame throwa. Kind of wish they did

Found this pretty irritating, Stephen Malkmus' voice was the main annoyance but it was just noise for a lot of the album, not music. Enjoyed Summer Babe, which was my song of the album and best first listen and Here was also a solid listen but nah, didn't enjoy this

Kind of jarring icl Y9 Thomas would’ve loved this shit

Some good sounds in there but I couldn't resonate with it. Maybe I'll try to revisit it in another time. 4.8/10

It’s just not very good.
