Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Fantastic classic sound, music and especially lyrics by The Who.
A good album with several good songs. But feels like they were trying to hard to be weird.
6,5
Warrants more listens
Good joke, alright album. Kinda fell off at the end there.
Decent album that certainly isn't the best work of The Who nor anything remarkavle
Köper att det är med för att visa hur hemskt det var med stereoalbum i början och för att det är ett helt ok album i övrigt.
Depending on who you read, this is either the best concept album of all time, or else the gimmick is a distraction from a weak collection of songs. I tend toward the latter, but it's not as if there isn't anything redeemable here. I find the concept distracting and not particularly well done. Best track: I Can See For Miles
Nice for in the background, it all peters by.
Not my favorite. Fun songs and lyrics but
Bizarrely bad album considering its the who, I Can See For Miles is the only reason it’s a 2 instead of a 1. Weird and annoying.
Fuckin bullshit. 1.58
Not even giving it an ironic name saves this from being absolutely dismal.
Keith Moon is great but I don’t like the who very much and this album ain’t it.
Dosadan album, možda jedna ili dvije dobre stvari. 2/5, 3/10
I have no idea where to start with this album, there is the standout banger 'I Can See For Miles' and a couple of other tracks which had some very good guitar work, but the whole package just did not work. I'm sure the ironic 'Sell Out' advert thing was clever at the time, but the context has now been irretrievably lost to someone like me. Ok in places confusingly disastrous in others.
I found this album extremely annoying. Also gets one extra point less for the disgusting cover art alone.
not great
There are too many albums from The Who on this list.
Despite a handful of truly great tracks, I've always struggled to gravitate towards The Who, who, for the most part, seem be achingly mediocre and the more of them I listen to, the less I seem to like. I'm slowly coming to the realisation that perhaps they're not the band they threatened to be when I first heard _Baba 'O Reailly_, _Pinball Wizard_, or _Won't Get Fooled Again_ and that they're destined to be a band who have a few great songs in an overly long back catalogue. ... or perhaps this just hit different back in the 60s and early 70s
I love a bit as much as the next guy, but there’s such a thing as too much commitment. Maybe I would have liked this better if I didn’t know what these guys were capable of. Where’s quadrophenia you cowards!!!
idk man it was kind of annoying I fear it felt underwhelming
SUENA VIEJO. No puedo describirlo de otra manera. No está mal. Me hace acordar a los primeros discos de los Rollings
I try not to repeat myself in these things, but I have realized that on the rare occasion that someone actually reads them, they are only seeing THAT review and not going through all my previous reviews of that band. So I need to once again point out: I am not a big Who fan. I like their greatest hits but beyond that I could really take or leave them. I realize I am in the minority on that opinion, but they've just never really done much for me. So all of that being said, this album is absolutely NOT essential in my opinion. I don't think anyone NEEDS to hear more than one Who album before they die, and while it has its moments (like "I Can See for Miles,") this one is certainly not it.
I….don’t think I get this album. It feels impossible to understand this art outside of being deeply immersed in its full cultural context. A couple of bangers though, it gets a 2 just for I Can See For Miles. Still don’t think I can ever not associate The Who with my high school English teachers being gaga for them.
This Who album kinda sucks? They're also kinda turning me away from concept albums. I like the CONCEPT of a concept album, but its often not executed. The Kinks "Arthur" nailed it. Pet Sounds sonically nailed it. Dark Side etc. Maybe its just The Who.
Probably not one of their best albums. Some good songs with these weird non commercials in between.
Man this album is boring and lame. Maybe I'm not British enough to enjoy this "wild" and "wacky" album. Every song sounds like they are about to fall asleep (just like me). The commercial concept is interesting, but just comes off as annoying. They also give up on the concept halfway through the album. I did not really get much at all out of this album, but it isn't the worst thing ever. I think this is my last The Who album on this list so that's good atleast. Mid 2.
What a fun album!!! All it is missing is....quality songs. I think they have it in here for its novelty quality, but really this isn't great.
Maybe it’s because I had Hendrix just before, but this bored the shit out of me
The Who, Steely Dan, and the Eagles. No matter how many albums you include from them, I will fail to understand the appeal.
I Can See for Miles
I didn’t like this album, it started well then ended drav
Ni mn ding
An interesting album to include on this list. They definitely have better works in their career. Not many hit songs on here and some of the songs are just odd. 2/5 Probably won’t listen again
Just because something’s unique doesn’t mean it needs to be recognized, even from a mega-band like The Who, who I otherwise love. This was just a dumb concept and not an enjoyable listen.
Felt abit underwhelmed on first listen.
salright
2/5
Я так понимаю, альбом задумывался как концептуальный - радио, реклама, коммерция и прочие смыслы. Наверное в 1967 это было свежо. Состарился плохо на мой взгляд.
Far from the best The Who album in my opinion.
Very underwhelming Who album. I do like the band a lot so I had a high standard coming in but this was kind of disappointing. Had more of a Beach boys vibe wish I would do like also but didn't fit with The Who as much.
One great song does not make a album a must listen.
Deep cut counter culture album from 50 years ago shockingly did not age well
I respect how weird this is but it's just not very enjoyable to me. It just feels like a bunch of unfinished songs
För plojigt och ostrukturerat. Föredrar Who's next framför detta.
Not bad, but I didn't love it.
first of all, it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be and as i saw in a bunch of reviews. i think that the concept was executed quite nicely actually, to me it felt exactly how watching ads on television felt as a kid - everything interrupted with a commercial, as if rubbed in your face. so for that, it has my respect - the way that the concept for the album was delivered. however, musically, it was quite boring, none of the songs really caught my attention as something "more than decent". but if i had to pick a favorite - it would probably be "our love was"
I've never listened to this album before, but have been a fan of The Who for a while. This was borderline unlistenable.
The concept for this album did not land for me. The Who consistently have awesome guitar/bass work, but it was kinda lost behind the rest of the components of the album.
Odd and weird
okayy
The most British thing I've ever heard.
The concept was interesting but it didn't draw me in.
not my cup of tea
The only track I really enjoyed on here was Sunrise; the rest ranged from tedious to outright irritating. To say that this is far from The Who's best work would be an understatement.
5/10
A collection of all of The Who's worst impulses. Almost unlistenable.
It is still the who, but I want to give it a 0
Incredibly meta and constantly breaks the 4th wall. It's ridiculous and on the nose. Why it's on this list? I have no idea. It doesn't do anything that The Who weren't already known for. The critics who think this is their greatest album does make me laugh though, just like the image of Robert Daltry sitting in a bathtub of beans. It's milquetoast, 4/10.
Чрезмерная писклявость и какая-то театрализованность. Не понравилось
Buena banda, pero un disco conceptual, travieso, en modo sátira. Seguramente innovador y transgresor en su momento, pero no me terminé de enganchar.
Bad concept executed poorly, just an obnoxious album to revisit
The cover art might be better than the album.
The Who I like (and I am learning that is a very qualified phrase) is the windmilling guitar rock out Who. This is not that. I Can See For Miles, is as good it gets. I appreciate it’s a concept, but the fake ads are just annoying
Oh that is a lot of The Who in one go. I generally like the *idea* of The Who much more than the reality. And this is The Who with ad breaks. Two tracks in and I was thinking you could already knock 5 minutes off the run time by eliminating both of them. I am grateful at this point to have read Wikipedia and discovered the album was actually originally 39 minutes and not the 71 minutes Amazon was offering (or the 5 hours 41 minutes of the super deluxe version!). I liked Odorono despite the fact it was about deodorant. And I liked I Can See for Miles. Ultimately the concept annoyed me so much it was hard to see past it to judge the songs however. 2/5
I can see for miles is great but it's mostly annoying
The song that everyone listens to is great but as a whole its a forgettable album
Interests fills between songs. Very 60s and fairly non descript
Not a great listen. Couple of ok songs but largely not much to write home about.
It’s just all pretty painful really. You’re really not as funny as you think you are lads.
It's easy to see why they're not spoken about in the manner as others from that generation.
Nowhere near the Who’s best. I can See for Miles is excellent, but otherwise it’s pretty average with some really annoying adverts and jingles.
3rd album we’re getting from The Who (yet), and I have to admit they have been one of the biggest disappointments this far. There are not many really good songs here, and almost all of them are places on the last half. Not a moment of joy until I Can See… breaks up the crap.
Keep in mind that we started listening to The Who right after Who’s Next dropped. Quadro followed and both got a lot of play. Sometime in late ‘73 or 74, long before The Who By Numbers was released, I went back and bought a vinyl copy of Sell Out (released in ‘67.) Despite the rave reviews it had received upon release, it was a huge disappointment. It got played maybe twice. Why play Sell Out when you can listen to Who’s Next or Quadro? Or even Tommy. But not to worry, The Who By Numbers came out a short while later and that started getting all the play. (2.2*s) for original UK version. The better songs are on the extended version, notably Early Morning Cold Taxi and Glow Girl. I’m sure we’ll be hearing from The WHO again before this project is complete…
Sucks. 2/5
not great, but better than some of their other stuff.
Aged poorly
Of course they sell out. Later. Not with this record though. I Can See For Miles is an all time class for good reason - that song is well written with a catchy melody that’s easy for the common man to sing, easy to remember chorus, it has it all. Does any recall the verses though? Oh yeah…If you do recall then you know that really makes this a hit is the bitterness inherent throughout e.g. “you took advantage of my trust” etc. Betrayed by a cheating partner. Tale as old as time! Our Love is a step below in terms of song quality but a nice slice of mod pop. Relax and Tattoo are mildly interesting as Roger’s vocal takes are somewhat interesting and presage, in large part, Tommy. However, the rest of the LP is a throwaway with a corniness that betrays The Who’s earlier output. As an album, The Who Sell Out is an early inconsistent experimental attempt at a concept album but the jingles and the whole pirate radio facade is frankly weak sauce. This album’s appearance on this list makes me think the author was, as the English would say, taking the piss. The fact that some professional reviewers also said that this was the best record The Who ever made just confirms that so called professional music reviewers and critics are, frankly, just stupid. The best Who record is Quadrophenia and it is not even close. So, go listen to that album and don’t waste your time with this lame excuse of a record. 2/5
I just didn’t enjoy it at all.
Actually, this is the forth The Who album I’ve listened to as part of this project. My relationship with the band has been a bit complicated. I was always more of a rocker than a mod. At some point, I found a way into their music and am enthusiastic about some of their stuff. Surprisingly to me, that doesn’t apply to this album. Perhaps the album is conceptual in its structure and music. But just like in real life, concepts can be a failure. And that seems to be the case here. I probably won’t listen to this album again. 2/5
After listening to this album I feel confused. Why did they throw random jingles in and what is going on in general. I wouldn't say it deserves only one star, but...
Armenia city in the sky - 2/5 Mary Anne with the shaky hand - 2/5 Odorono - 3/5 Tattoo - 2/5 Our love was - 3/5 I can see for miles - 2/5 I can't reach you - 3/5 Relax - 3/5 Silas stingy - 2/5 Sunrise - 2/5 Rael - 2/5 Someone's coming - 2/5
This album honestly felt kind of stale but chaotic at the same time. I don't really know how to describe it, it was just odd to listen to and not enjoyable at all. 3/10, Favorite Song: Rael 1
4/10
Heinz Baked Beans haunts me.
Heard of The Who. Never this album. Not sure which disc I’m supposed to listen to. Starting from the beginning. Armenian city in the sky is pretty cool. Well written. Good guitar. Heinz is super interesting. Really good horn and drums. Weird this early in the album. Mary Anne is pretty fun. Very 60s. Really good writing on ordorono. I like the radio hits from one song to the next to. Makes it feel like a real album. Tattoo and our love was are pretty forgettable. Classic rock songs. I can see for miles is a lot better. Awesome guitar. Great drums too. Really good keyboard and songwriting on I can’t reach you. Don’t really like medac. Dated. Relax is a lot better. Very fun song. Great guitar again. Love the solo. Don really like Silas stingy. Sunrise is fine. Good lyrics I guess. Nothing really special. Real is pretty cool. Really good drums. Flute is pretty cool add. Overall underwhelmed with this album. It was just OK. Pretty dated. No real bangers. 2.4 stars.
5/10
Not great is it. I really like “a quick one” but this is just daft I can see for miles is good like
Never listened to an album by the who, this sounded so different to the singles I have heard
Other than a couple of songs I didn’t really like it.
Surprisingly listenable. Wouldn't return but an interesting hour.
One hit song in an album full of shit.
I can appreciate that The WHO are one of those bands that you can’t really criticize too much cause they are just such an important foundational band for all of rock music. Like for example, despite how disconnected this band feels from something like let’s say deathcore, something that seems like it couldn’t be further from it, well shockingly they are linked. There’s a group of people out there that (incorrectly) think that the whole created the first metal song. The song they are referring to is a heavier version of one of their songs off a live album (I can’t remember the specific details of that song but if you search it you can find that info). So even if they didn’t directly create the genre, it shows that they had an influence on the people that influenced the genre in the future on some regard. Despite my long winded defense of The Who as an important influential rock band, this is where the praising stops and you realize why I’ve been so defensive about the band. It’s because this album is such a massive nothing burger that literally put me to sleep once (thankfully not while driving). It’s just to dry and boring, even a legitimately silly creative album artwork can’t redeem this completely forgettable stepping stone of an album. It does feature the song “I can see for miles” which is genuinely a good song so seek that one out and skip the rest of the album. (This was actually the end of my review but than I remembered I had one actual constructive criticism of this album and I wanted to add that. Which is, the best moments of this album that had the most promise was when they decided to get very mildly psychedelic right near the end of the album. No joke, Rael 1 and 2 are the best songs on the album, I could’ve done with more whacky psychedelic stuff. But I guess the world as a whole was only just starting to dip their toes into that.
aburrido,no hay mucho más por decir
The whole radio jingle bit was distracting and didn't work for me. They apparently felt the same and abandoned it by the end of the album. I liked 2 out of 13 songs on this album, not a great average. Who didn't deserve to be on this list? This album.
"...it was the band's lowest-charting album on the UK Albums Chart..." Why is this Scooby-Doo sounding crap on the list, then!?
Love The Who. This was just annoying and sounded like it was recorded from within a can of Heinz Beans. Appreciate the attempt to make a statement and that saves this from a 1.
Never heard one of the songs on the album, probably for good reason.
With every Who album on the list, their stature as rock gods diminishes
It does not sound like it, and I understand that, but I am a fan of The Who. I don't like how so many of their records need a theme or something close to a theme, but I like their music. This, by far, is the most overrated album in their catalog. It's not nearly as interesting or even good as history says it is. The commercials are welcome because they break up what sound like outtakes from better albums. I can't get behind this album. It's not good, even if I want it to be good. The songs aren't strong and there is a reason the sales weren't great. Why The Who Sell Out is considered a classic, I just can't explain that.
I can appreciate a concept album, but this one was really boring. Two stars. (Favorite track: I Can See For Miles.)
sold out album. mostly radio jingles album goes nowhere
It's fine. And too long. I could have lived happily ever after without ever listening to this. Great cover artwork, of course. Although the joke does probably wear a bit thin after a bit. So... Not THAT great.
Bored out by the Who. (And I love classic rock!)
In customary The Who fashion, this is rather pretentious (not least the silly "radio jingles", introductions/intermissions and laughable attempts at being abstract in a lyrical sense), and at times very grating. However, I did prefer the greater lean into psychedelia that can be observed on this album, and the songs generally seemed more cohesive, with clear structures and comprehensible ideas. I'm still baffled as to their popularity and the esteem in which they are held, but this one won't be joining the shit pile as it wasn't without merit.
Too long
Big expectations but no delivery. I have to admit that I wasn't on most concentrated listening mood but this just went past without any permanent memory creation.
The whole ads and jingles makes this a horrific album to listen to, sort of reminds me of the rappers early 90's obsession with jokes and skits in between the album. Feels like Who really got into drugs and hippie culture at this point. The first song that kind of grabbed my interest was half way through and I found more interesting tracks to listen to in the extended part of the album, with bonus songs. Horrible concept album.
There's something about The Who that I don't get. It's not that I don't like them, but every time I've gotten an album in this project it annoys me that I have to listen to it (I know I don't really *have* to listen to it). I always push through, and they're not bad, but I still can't shake that annoying feeling.
I can see how this would have been interesting when released. I Can See For Miles is a great song. Mid 2s.
Kind of crap.
definitely more my style but not as pin point, if that makes sense
You would think a song titled “Heinz Baked Beans” would be the best track on any given album, but alas it isn’t. In fact it might just be the worst one
I suppose much of the music on here is three star worthy. But the ad concept annoys me and because it’s the Who and I know they can do so much better I’m only giving them two. (Would do 2.5 if I could)
Meh I understand it was groundbreaking for the time but other than I Can See For Miles there's just nothing good here.
This isn't good. Fair play for committing to a concept and trying something a bit unusual, but it doesn't work for me, at all. There's not many songs on here I actually get on with, and those that I do I simply find 'ok'.
Trying to be funny/clever but it’s just annoying. No decent tunes on this one either to make up for it
Like The Who but did not know this album. The concept based around pop art and fake commercials was probably very good when it came out but nowadays I think it lost its appeal.
Riding high on "I Can See For Miles" (which gets pretty repetitive) and not much else. The folk of "Silas Stingy" was fun, but the rest of it was poor at best.
Weird
Ok
Tråkigt album som helhet men ett fåtal bangers
41/1001 First listen. Had to check again to see if I was actually listening to the right album. This is The Who? I have never understood this band. Their singles are good but everything else to my ears just sounds made up on the spot. 4/10
2. Old recording, silly album.
Meghhhhh
Okay. Not their best work - a little too similar across the board to each other and other music at the time.
A lot of forgettable and uninspiring music on this record with "I Can See For Miles" being one great exception, so much so that it is a little jarring to hear juxtaposed against all the other tracks. The radio jingles concept of the album doesn't bother me, and I think hearing the radio voices sprinkled throughout the album gives it an enjoyable theme (even better if it were more satirical - see Songs for the Deaf), but that theme spills over into the music itself, making it bland and uninteresting.
Am I going to have to listen to every single f The Who album? Saved a song: N RYM: N
There is a concept here but not a great one.
The fact that it’s a concept album doesn’t automatically make it good. 2/5
How can an album that features I Can See For Miles be this bad?
Uhm, weird. I pay for Spotify so I don't have to listen to ads.
Not their best.
2.5
maybe a 1.5
This might have been innovative and perhaps even a bit edgy in 1967, but it hasn’t aged well. 2/5
While the quirky use of Radio London and advertisements might have seemed creatively surreal when they sat at the mixing desk, they are irritating on first listen and prohibit repeated playing. Unfortunately the rest is fairly pedestrian.
Tää tuli mulle jo aikasemmin ja oli sillon ärsyttävä joten en jaksa kuunnella uudestaan. Pidättäydyn siinä että oli rasittava.
Not sure what this is. Not very listenable as a record but definitely creative. The radio ads and the reference to smooth sailing make me think of Songs for the Deaf by qotsa. Seems like drugs influenced this a lot which isn’t bad but it’s indulgent.
Nah, this is far too 60s for me
my least favorite The Who album so far. the only good songs are Tattoo and I Can See For Miles
Neat! They sound so pop, like the Beatles in 1965, just 2 years later. The adds were a cool concept and I’m sure a big hit. Not great but not terrible, 2
when i first searched it it took me to the super deluxe and it was like 5 hours long and i was like oh absolutely not. anyway found the right album now!! ok so this is actually the most uncomfortable headphone listening experience ive ever had why are the drums and guitars in my left ear and vocals and horns in the right i actually might kms this is fucking awful i cant ok switched to my speaker this is much more pleasant this is so 60s its almost like the album is from the 60s i dont rly like 60s music im a 70s and onward girl tbh #davidbowie #marauders what who said that ok i like this acoustic song
Oh its a collection of advertisements. The concept of making this an album and then selling the album of advertisements is extremely funny however the music in it is just ok every time they drop a brand it takes me out of it. Favourite: Tattoo incl. "Church Of Your Choice" Jingle
They say don't judge an album by its cover. In this case you can. Both are fucking insane. There’s a run of songs I actually really like in the middle here (Our Love Was, I Can See For Miles, Can’t Reach You) interspersed with batshit psychedelic adverts for no good reason.
Mid
This psychedelic rock album is like a pirate radio station lost in its own brilliant cacophony—jangling guitars, soaring harmonies, and mock commercials collide in a mix of satire and sincerity that’s vibrant and clever but often too chaotic to stay interesting.
Litt gøy med gamle reklama, egentlig. Fint gjenlytt med I can see for miles
This started out in serious danger of a 1. Then we had a nice trio in our love was, I can see for miles (banger), and I can’t reach you… and then back to the gutter. I guess I’m learning that maybe I don’t like the Who that much. Their highs are really really high but man there are a lot of lows.
I'm starting to think that the Who are just one of those cultural blind spots.
Not a fan of The Who.
I don’t really have much to say on this except I thought I’d like it more to be honest. I thought it sounded very outdated and just couldn’t really get into the flow of the record. Potentially my fault for listening to it in the background rather than maybe giving it the attention it deserved, but I can’t say I have many positives unfortunately
I love The Who (still one of the best bands I've ever seen live), but this concept album of fake commercials doesn't work for me. An extra point for I Can See For Miles which is still a banger of a tune.
One great song and a lot of drugs being taken.
Why is this an essential? Maybe the concept was cool at the time. Maybe it was influential at the time. I just didn't find it special.
This was so meh, and might have the absolute worst album cover I have ever seen. Never again…
Mixed bag that hardly gave a good track.
Not a big Who fan
Mid
wow trying really hard to be the beatles but about 3% as good. couple decent songs and some horrendous garbage
Funny album cover. 60’s psychedelic wackiness. I guess lots of bands were doing their version of Sgt Peppers/ magical mystery tour but It only really works for the Beatles to me. I didn’t like most of the songs. John Entwistle/ Keith moon have a thing. The ones I liked best: Armenia in the sky I can see for miles I can’t reach
I used to like the who growing up but not familiar with this album at all except for “i can see for miles” There is some nostalgia factor for me but this album is kind of annoying - not a fan of circus-y silly interludes in general and it has that 60’s sound i dont like. That said i do think the songs are marginally better than some of the other 60’s crap. 2.5?
Need to do full listen. Temp 3 for now
Annoying.
Miks jokasen biisin alussa oli jotain ihmeen pätkiä mistälie? Jotenkin ärsyttävä mut eo kuitenkaan pahimmasta päästä
A beige blur of blah.
better than the other one
Brutal listen. Experimental sure. But not good...
Look, okay, Tommy? Obviously. Quadraphenia? Sure, makes sense. Who's Next? Okay. But, fuckin... The Who Sell Out!?? WE HAVE TO DRAW THE LINE SOMEWHERE
Too weird and goofy. Probably rating lower because I expect more from the who
More annoying than amusing.
The Who have always been the “I guess you had to be there” band of the British Invasion for me. Keith Moon is a legend- but their songs are always kinda dopey to me. The substance of the songs doesn’t match the style. This album has a fun gimmick- pretending to replicate a fake pirate radio with commercials. And the songs are melodic with some very pleasant and rich harmonies. I was prepared to give this thing at least three stars but then…. The second side happened Argh. So damn boring. Just begs the question- who’s next? TWO STARS
An interesting idea but not a great listen
I get it. It’s a concept album of commercials and jingles. Novelty wears off quickly though. It’s a no from me and I’m a Who fan.
OK, this list has way too much of The Who on it. I don't need to hear every single Who album ever put out before I die. This one just straight up sucks. 1.5 / 5 stars = 2.
Britain thought there was a Brainrot Victory
Meh
Great concept of a pirate radio station - but I'm increasingly finding these older albums just boring.
++: Heinz Baked Beans, Odorono, I Can See for Miles, Relax +: Rael (1 and 2) +-: Armenia City in the Sky, Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand, Our Love Was, I Can't Reach You, Sunrise -: Tattoo, Medac, Silas Stingy 4,2/10
2 stars
Album No. 0018 on my list. While I’m certainly not their biggest fan, but I love a lot of their songs (especially from this album’s two successors). From this album, I only knew “I can see for miles”. I can appreciate the idea of this album (even though the aesthetics of its cover feel a little weird in 2025). It’s just that the execution is not that great. Beyond the aforementioned “I can see for miles” I only liked “Armenia City in the Sky”, the rest of the songs all felt rather boring and mediocre. The idea of disguising the album as something like a “radio listening session” is interesting, but in the end I found the radio jingles in between the songs rather annoying. That being said, The Who Sell Out is not a terrible album, but for me still one that fails to meet expectations. 2/5 stars.
I just cannot get into The Who, at all. Something about them leaves me cold outside a handful of hits.
Don't get the hype
To me it sounded quite dated. And I keep listening to 70's mumsic like it is a novelty, but this, in my opinion, did not stand the test of time.
Listening to this album, its really not a surprise in hindsight as to why they thought I Can See For Miles would be their first #1. Most of the album is turgid stuff, but I Can See For Miles stands out like the diamond it is in comparison. Way, way too much filler on here.
Nice little experimental concept album. Had no idea that they made this (like I even listen to Who albums). Easiest showcase of corporatism in music.
God, that went on a bit
Another instance where the album is far from the best of the artist
not particularly my style, kinda annoying. Appreciate the concept though and am fully willing to concede that my lack of love for it is completely due to my taste and era rather than this album’s shortcomings Tattoo was kinda alright actually The radio concept is kinda saving it for me ngl, i love when albums have a thought out flow/story. i’d prefer the interludes/skits were separated from the regular songs though i can see for miles is nice but REPETITIVE “there goes mingy stingy” is a lyric 💀 that song went on for WAYYY too long sunrise is nice and a massive tonal shift after silas stingy not the Is**** song 💀 it feels like so many songs are extremely repetitive like just chants of the song title 25/100 i think my faves were Glow Girl, Melancholia and Tattoo least faves were Silas Stingy and the Raels
I thought this was gimmicky and lightweight. I can see for miles was standout but the rest was forgettable and I hated the “adverts”
Das Album The Who Sell Out wurde 1967 von der britischen Rockband The Who veröffentlicht.
So far this is my least favorite who album of all time. Not enough substance.
this was weird. not sure what exactly they were on when they put this together......
No lo entendí
So after listening to it and reading it's supposed to be a great album....I have questions. Is the Who terrible? Has everyone gone deaf? They have some killer songs out there. If this is supposed to be one of their best I fear for other albums.
Well that was weird. Maybe you just had to be there?
What a weird album. Not a lot of memorable songs in there. Clever concept, but seems like a comedy sketch
I much prefer The Who without all the bloody whimsy. 2/5 #119
I Can See For Miles obviously is a standout track here; the rest is experimental but not captivating or very enjoyable in general
The Who is great when they’re rockin but outside of that, they can be pretty iffy. This isn’t the worst English Band Being Cheeky record, just by virtue of being by a band who knows what they’re doing. But it’s still an English Band Being Cheeky record.
6/30/25. Really not sure what to make of this one. Great production and understand it may have been satire on "selling out" based on the pop sound. However, I didn't connect with it on my first listen. Songs were a bit all over.
There are bright spots, but the silly parts are kind of wasted on me.
Couldn’t get through this one. Mono sound quality too bad.
Yes: "I Can See for Miles" No: a thousand other annoying tracks
concept albums are just an excuse for making bad music
unnötig
Interesting concept, terrible execution. I like The Who, but I wasn't prepared for how terrible this album was until I hit play. If I had picked up this album as a fan of The Who in 1967 I would have been so disappointed. This is a joke. What a steaming pile of garbage. The only saving grace is "I Can See For Miles," which elevates this album from a 1 to a 2.
Wow. This continues to prove that the only good Who albums are live Who albums. This is strange, experimental, and overall just doesn't have great songs. Not sure where they were mentally, but they weren't thinking about making good music.
Some good songs, but lost among the dross and the 'adverts'. It's also overlong; got to love 'alternative versions'
After reaching their nadir with Who’s Next, the finest rock album ever, even their own stuff sounds inferior.
The Who are a shade too mild-mannered to hold me here
Only listened to the beginning before I had to go but I wasn't too cheesed
beany dribble
Do NOT listen to the expanded edition. There is no reason to listen to this for more than your required 32 minutes.
Huh? The Who? The What? The Where? The Why? 3/10
Man, this album really let me down on second listen. I remembered enjoying it a lot and I could barely get through it. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood but it left no impression on me whatsoever. Could not see any of what I enjoyed before.
Undeniably talented. Not my jam
This really didn't chime with me. I Can See For Miles is a good song and rocks like some of The Who's biggest hits but.. the rest varies between boring and forgettable (Mary Anne With the Shaky Hands) and stupid (Silas Stingy). Plus the ad jingles are not appealing - those are the bits we put up with to get to the music, so why is it a good thing to have them on an album? Sorry I'm not a fan of this
Aldri likt Stones
There’s a couple of good tracks here but all the adverts and intermissions make it not much better than all the rap additions to the 1001 with all their skits etc. Still, gets bonus points for trying something different. 2.5 stars.
This album is a bold anti-commercial statement, cleverly disguised as a concept-like radio broadcast. But let’s be honest—The Who is probably the last band I’d expect to deliver a concept album. From the creators of “My Generation,” “The Kids Are Alright,” and “I Can’t Explain”? It feels out of character. And there are bigger issues: the album is packed with filler. Sure, there are some standout tracks—like “Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand” and “I Can See for Miles”—but overall, it presents a sound that feels un-Who-like (take “Sunrise,” for example) and leans heavily into the typical ’60s aesthetic. If an unknown band had released this album, I might have rated it a 4. But coming from The Who, it’s a 2.
Are the who the diet Beatles? This was not a fun listen and kind of felt like a Beatles album if it lost all of its charm and goodness. Favorite track - I can see for miles 3/10
What a bizzare and crazy record. Like, there were moments I was absolutely repulsed by the jingles and the overt endorsements, and just overall bizarreness (derogatory), but then there were tracks like I Can See For Miles and Rael that made me feel like I was on a different album. I may have made a mistake listening to the extended edition I found online, which realllly made the album drag, but, on the other hand, my favorite tracks wound up being on the extended portion - Sodding About has some rad riffs, and Summertime Blues...the latter of which, well...unfortunately, wound up being a cover. Not really a great sign, if you ask me. I still wanna try other Who records, but this one probably won't getting much of a revisit (or at least, if I do, it'll be a version with all the ad/jingle tracks cut out). PS: Where the heck did that rad rendition of In The Hall of the Mountain King come from?!
The two stars is solely for "I Can See for Miles".
Only one hit on the album. Ads were a new concept/skits. Doesn't save album though.
No, Apple Music, I'm not doing 5 hours of this. Not everything a good band puts out needs to be good or put on a list. 2*, +1 because of the creative idea but poor execution. I like that pinball wizard came on after this album so I can remember how good these guys sound.
5/10
A little too out there for me
Maybe it's because I was listening to this sober, but man was this mid.
I thought the whole pirate radio thing was clever and funny at times. I just don't like The Who vocals. I could never get into their music. This sounds really outdated even in the extremely high quality audio from QOBUZ. I guess I just don't get them. I never understood the appeal of "Tommy" either.
Only average and dated songs plus stupid ads. Not for me.
Armenia City in The Sky is strange but not bad. Heinz Baked Beans is downright stupid. Mary Anne With the Shaky Hand is pretty good. The end of it sounds sampled from Chanson Des Jumelles from The Young Girls of Rochefort which came out the same year. Most songs start and end with random radio songs or broadcasts. I Can See For Miles is a notably good song, maybe the only notable one on the album. Lots of silly songs; this album sounds a lot like some dudes just messing around. Relax is okay. Sunrise is pretty good. Few good songs and they kept it intersting, although some was lame.
2/5 didn't like the fake ads, don't really care for the who much either
The concept is cool but the execution was pretty bad.
More Who tosh, doesn't have the unpleasant undertones of Tommy but chock full of the bland filler. Sort of radio thing interspersed with adverts is fine but not done in a way that marches the music, so I imagine it would start to grate even if you'd like the who. I think the harpsichord mingy stingy track speaks for itself. So for the who, not terrible, but by normal music standards its very bad. 1.5.
A lot of it was a bit like an attempt at psychedelia, but with plenty of mentions of canned goods. Not sure if the concept of the album actually translates to a positive listening experience. Who's Next is much more my thing, big stadium rock, lots of memories of CSI. Best track on this is I Can See For Miles. I prefer The Who when they are sold out.
Only recognised "I can see for miles" from here, not their best track, nor album. Although, I was worried this was going to be worse than it was tbf. The who are a strange band, had some strange ideas. Which, I suppose meant they were up for trying these things. They do have some great tracks though, just not sure they are on this album. 2.5
I like the gimmick of the concept album, but ultimately is just sounds like generic forgettable who off cuts.
Ihan ok - tosin tuntuu, ettei konsepti (mainokset) pidä ihan loppuun asti, mikä on erikoista. Mutta ehkä en vain kuuntele sainoituksia tarpeeksi tarkasti? Ei myöskään ole minusta tarpeeksi iskevää sinkkumateriaalia.
No thanks
Meh
bem chatinho de escutar
Dorky in all the wrong ways. Musically it’s solid, but not all ideas are good ones.
It's all sounds a bit dated now, and sounds like something that would have been done by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The spoof adverts and the jingles get in the way of the actual music, with the only decent track being "I Can See for Miles".
This one is kind of weird and artsy. I like The Who, but I can't jam to this. 2/5.
The only Who record that is aggressively bad
Not the best The Who have ever done, close to the worst to be honest, but "I Can See For Miles" remains a tune...
Concept album from The Who. Here's a concept... Don't waste your time on this. If you're looking for something that stretches The Who's chops, Tommy is a way, way better option.
idk i love the who but this was just kinda on. Like unmemorable
OK. Nothing super-grabbed me, and I suspect this was fairly experimental at the time
The bad songs were really bad. But then they'd sprinkle a few good parts in here and there Overall did not enjoy 2 ⭐️
Quiero mis 40 min de vuelta.

I thought I'd like the who... that's a surprise. It didn't appeal at all.
I'm finding that I'm just not a big fan of The Who.... Plus, 60s The Who sounds very different than the 70s The Who.
WHO thought this was a good idea? I appreciate the advertisement theme, but that's it. Favorite Song: "Silas Sander".
The Who really love the concept album. Unfortunately, their songwriting does not always reach the heights of their imagination. There are some gems here, and the sound effects prefigure autotune and digital voiceovers. I’m down with the anti commercialization, but I’m not buying this album. It’s a 2.
Awful album. I get it, but that doesn't stop it from being awful
Э. Лучшая песня - Our Love Was.
second hearing today made me give it 2/5, last night i was sure this LP deserves 1/5.
Nowhere near as good as I was hoping for with a “the who” album. Also, I think I’ll institute a “concept albums loose a star”-policy …
One good song hidden in a bunch of weird garbage
I think I like it, but I'll have to listen to it more
Interesting but not my cup of tea.
Hmm. I don't think The Who could ever be totally shit, and this isn't, but apart from I Can See For Miles, I didn't like it. I felt like I wasn't in on the joke and/or aim. It's no wonder you never hear any of this nowadays (at least, not in my experience) when people are reminiscing over their glory days.
Very Whoish. Mostly short, fun pop songs, good guitar riffs. The commercial jingles are clever bits but dated.
I feel like people can’t actually take this stuff seriously, I don’t know.
An odd little album, and not especially in a good way? Apparently it was supposed to be a concept album, but I think with the cultural differences between the US and the UK and the passing of time much has been lost. 2.4/5 -> 2/5
really didn’t age well - feels too 60s
maan i thought the who was supposed to be like early punk stuff. Yea this one isn’t it
Lots of Beatles & Pschedelic influence. The problem is the Who just…don’t do it as well. This album is a bit disjointed and far less epic than Who’s Next. Standout track is “Odorono”.
Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Artwork: 🦨🫘🤢 Production : 🔊🥴🔊 Music: 🤑🤪🥱 Rating: 🫘(🫘)/5
Waren "The Who" nicht Punk? Hat sich für mich irgendwie null danach angehört, aber gut, bin eh nicht so der Fan von der Musikrichtung. Dieses Album klang für mich wie der typische 60er/70er Pop, kein Song ist wirklich Hängengeblieben. 2 Sterne
Considered rating it higher cause it's the who but the more I listened I couldn't do it. Boring album. Sounds like 60s brit pop.
2 - Really did not gel with this...so much of the who it's getting a bit boring
The songs were great but the interruptions of the make believe ads were really annoying
Hmmmm. How many Who albums have I had now? I think I've mentioned on past albums, how I just can't seem to really get into them. I know they were a big deal in their day but I don't see the allure. So it looks like this is my 3rd album from them. Yeah sorry. 2 stars
I think I just like Who's Next as a full album.
Wow... I REALLY don't like this. The "concept" is annoying. The songs are mostly forgettable. A lot of it sounds like it's rehashed from older songs or rehearsal for future ones. Nope.
sound was chill but all the annoying ads ruin this
Mompelmompel commercie, mompelmompel kapitalisme.
This was odd. Not at all what I expected from this band. Funny in parts but that doesn't last
It's interesting to learn about pirate radio and the broader media/commercial environment in which this cohort of classic UK artists came of age and rose to fame. The album is an interesting artifact in that sense, but its appeal outside that is pretty limited. Worth including in a museum of rock, less so in a best albums list. Others did the flower power psych pop stuff way better, and The Who were way better as harder hitting proto-punks and massive guitar noise rockers. There are few moments where they do they thing, but it's always interrupted by something annoying. I think this band's ambition is their downfall - they got tired of doing what they were best at, started reaching for big ideas that got stretched incredibly over the course of a full concept album.
Loooong album without much.
Noch etwas frühe Kunst. Eindrucksvoll und auch anstrengend
I like some of The Who's stuff but this is not it. That must mean that there is some more The Who ahead in this path. I found the ad skits funny, which is in itself funny because I hate ads while listening to music.
Usually love the Who but this was just too weird. Great vocal harmonies for songs that are pretty stupid. My opinion and probably rating continues to drop after each track. Not sure this album is one that you must listen to before you die… 2.5/5 rounding down as I would be ok not listening again. Great band, but not a great album this time around
Well, I guess it's an amusing concept for an album but the jingles get in the way of the songs. And not so many of them seem particularly strong to me. Love the sleeve artwork though.
I thought I liked this record, but it's been a decade since I sat down and actually tried to listen to it beginning to end. It's just too fucking long. 23 songs? And there's five Who records on this list? Go fuck yourself.
Etwas angestaubter Rock. Kann man mal hören, für mich kein Highlight. 2/5
Out of the 5 who albums on the list, I think we can do without this one. The adverts just come across a bit lame now. I can see for miles is a great song but the rest of the album doesn’t match up to it.
Another concept album from the Who. It’s not bad and the bones are there for what would become Tommy. Rael 1 has motifs that were reused for Tommy. However, it’s just ok. I feel like I’ve outgrown the Who, despite my love for Keith Moon.
I've given it two stars on the the strength of I Can See for Miles. The rest was garbage.
# 342 : Kind of rubbish. Should have given up and went straight to Tommy. But I do like "I Can See For Miles"
i have no idea what to make of this album
