Reviews (page 7 of 8)
I can only assume this is on the list because it is a concept album and it is by The Who. Personally, I don't think those criteria alone are sufficient qualifications for it making the list. This is unusual to the point of making it inaccessible for me. Sure, there are glimpses of The Who's talent here and there but, overall, this is well below average.
I wish this service was context aware. As in, I've already gotten two Who albums and gave them two stars. I don't want to listen to the Who. Two albums is enough.
Idk I don't like it
The Who can fuck off, this is a terrible album
Is this actually a joke? It is absolutely absurd and not nearly as fun as you'd imagine the band think it is. A weird mix of old musical hall pastiches, gimmicky nothings and one very good song.
I don't know, not really my thing
A lot of annoyance to reach a couple good songs
Coming in behind Queen in the MOST Overrated categories, the Who. These guys were no more than the Kinks on acid. Who's Next is rockin and Quadrophenia has all the ups and downs of a great rock opera but this record can't even stand alongside those works
2.5
Not a fan
I liked the funny ads more than the real songs
2.5
Lads, you aren’t funny. Ditch the skits and write some actual songs.
Ganska simpel 60-tals pop. I I can See For Miles blir det lite bättre men inte tillräckligt.
Jaha. Först blev man glad. The who igen. Men denna skivan gjorde ingen glad. Fuck that shit.
Good concept. But bad execution. This is not a good album.
Too long (again), but The Who is not 1 star material. Very dull though.
The Who heeft goeie dingen gemaakt, dit is er geen van, buiten I Can See For Miles gerekend. 2.4*
Can’t tell if the title is an ironic deflection or just an unintendedly ironic. Either way, it fits, though from what I’ve heard of them (My Generation, which I enjoyed well enough) The Who were never exactly the most boundry-pushing band to begin with. This gets a little better in the second half, but for the most it sounds like tepid background music—decent enough as that but not particulary captivating.
Some ok songs, nothing that stands out. But as an album, this is less than the sum of its parts. Incoherent, overlong, and doesn't flow well or have a cohesive mood
My review was going to be that this album sounded like a collection of outtakes from bad commercials, then I read the wiki page and it’s sort of supposed to be exactly that. Still doesn’t make it very good.
Bit weird, bit boring, bit crap 45/100
I'm a fan of The Who but this album did little for me, I think this isn't something I'll return to. I've heard only 1 or 2 of these tracks before
I can see for miles
Umm what?
If it wasn't for I Can See For Miles I'd give this album a 1
Another mid album by The Who in my opinion. I liked the idea and album cover of all of the product placements, thought that was definitely funny. But the songs weren't all that good. Silas Stingy is up there with one of the worst songs I have heard. I am not sure if I just don't like The Who that much, or I just have a high expectation of them because of how good Who's Next is. But this was a dissapointment.
Sometimes it's so annoying to find an album that isn't "Super Deluxe" and 5 hours long. Who the fuck wants to listen to the Who for 5 hours??? Can you tell I've never been a huge Who guy? The Who have way better songs. I Can See for Miles rules though. High 2.
It was alright. Rock is not really my thing, but I definitely appreciated the humor in this one.
The Who is a great band with some all-time great albums. This isn't... one you must listen to. I can hear Pete dipping his toe into narrative/theatrical rock, but this is kinda a half-measure. It feels like a dry run for Tommy. The radio skits are not a good use of anybody's time.
wow they sure did sell out!!!!
Okay. Struggling with the 60's/70's pop rock and don't find much interesting in the instruments. A cool concept album though
2.5 it’s alright kinda weird
Maybe it was funny back then. It did not age well.
I can’t say I was a big fan of the artistic style of this album. The fake British radio broadcast and ads are obviously dated and don’t hold up well. There’s also really only one hit to draw in your attention. I like The Who and understand their influence, but I guess I have to care that they sold out to fully appreciate this one.
I've always thought that I was a big The Who fan, but the more they come up on this list I've come to realize that I'm just a fan of their top 5 hits or so. Every album seems to have one big standout hit ("I Can See For Miles" on this one) that I really enjoy but then struggle to get through the rest of it. Just give me a greatest hits compilation that cuts out all of the fluff.
Rock, Joke, 1967 -> 2
Aside from the classic I Can See for Miles, easily their best song on any record, this is a record of pleasant enough late 60s pop-psych which isn't as good as the Kinks. Better than later records by The Who? though. Other songs here worthy of a mention - Our Love Was, bits of Rael. That's about it.
What a terrible album. Bad concept, annoying, no "there" there.
Not as good as I was hoping for
A bit too self consciously wacky for me.
I haven't heard much of The Who (this might be the first album actually I've listened to), but it's very twee 60s Britpop. It's easy enough to listen to, but there's nothing much going on here for me. Maybe in the 60s they were influencing much of the music we take for granted today, but there's no songs here I'll revisit.
Not the band i can dig
I just didn't enjoy it nearly as much as anything I've heard from them that came later on.
Totally inessential who, although the jingles were kind of funny
This is what happens when you sell out. Luckily their best years followed this.
either i didnt really listen or this was a snooze fest.
Maybe I had to be there, maybe this is painfully too British for me, perhaps The Who just aren’t for me. 2 stars
I put this off for a long time bc I'm repulsed by the cover art. I wasn't wrong. I really disliked this.
I could swear I already listened to and rated this album but maybe it was one of the many other albums by The Who that have been served to me. This one, like the others, felt interminable even after I found the regular version in amongst the multiple editions and remasters. It only gets a second star because I love "I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles" - the rest feels like yet more nearly indistinguishable Rock Music With Guitars
Had never listened to this album. But my first thought was "yes, this must be good" since it is by "The Who". No, a great disappointment. With this music they would never have become the famous band they are today.
Messy
too much distracting shit
People seem to hate the jingles in between songs. I don't mind those. What bothers me more is the bad mix. I see this as a transitional record from My Generation to Tommy. I like them before and after the transition, but I don't like the transition itself very much. There's some really good parts, but as a whole, it doesn't sound essential to me. Favorite song: our love was
Seeing Roger Daltrey in a bath full of baked beans makes me feel ill, especially the spewing from his mouth, blurgh. I like the idea of this concept album, but didn't enjoy listening to it, (apart from I Can See For Miles, that was good). 1.5
Ahhhhhh I don't really like it. The Who made some good stuff later but I can't get into this shit. I can see for miles is pretty good but the rest really bores me I'm sorry. It's just another whacky 60s Album with a weird but not enjoyable concept. Fav songs: - I can see for miles
Meh. This one starts out strong but runs out of gas way before it’s over. The radio theme is cool, but a lot of this album is chorus- bababadum babadum babadumdum drum fill-chorus repeat. Girls Eyes could have been a Monkees B side. I like the experimental bits but this sounds like a lot of everything else from 1967
Interesting and more comedic than I expected.
Fairly chill album. I wasn't a fan of the ironic commercialism album concept that they were attempting. I prefer their more anthemic fare with wider appeal than the niche comedy bits. I cannot help but wonder if a record like this was influential upon the members of Monty Python when they would conceive and perform Monty Python's Flying Circus television series only a couple of years later. My favorite tracks were "I Can See For Miles" and "Sunrise". After experiencing this album my favorite albums of The Who have not changed. Who's Next, in my opinion, is still the definitive album of The Who. For inclusion on this list, this record is middling.
well, typical 60s pop rock. not really catchy. in the context of the time probably a great album, but for me and in the 2020s it has no meaning. OK, if I may add, even in the 1970s I didn't hear this and I know exactly why
i was looking forward to this because i already knew about the concept, but it just fell flat for me.
I like The Who a lot but this was exhausting to listen to
*Snores* maybe I am over exaggerating, but I really am just getting tired of the same old same old in the 60's. If I want this sound I'll just listen to the Beatles. There's some fun moments here, and that comes in the form of the production, but ultimately gets absolutely drowned about by the whiny vocals and wonky mixing. Neeexxxt
Meh nothing really here and I feel like they put out some better albums than this silly thing.
I feel like there are some of these late 60s psychedelic albums that hold up surprisingly well, and some where you probably had to be there. This one is solidly in the latter category.
One great song (I Can See For Miles). Otherwise, I don't get why this is considered so highly regarded.
Whats happening? Are we skipping in the forest with guitars ? it is beatles or the beach boys after they find acid in the glovebox? oh a Walrus . oh , its Mary here to save us. I guess this was new as we are bombarbed with mashups now. ... oh I like a track - I can see for miles now. it has grooovy moments... and I can sense a thumping band here. but as an album, I guess it must have seemed important but without the guidebook its not making sense. Oh no back to tamborines and englihs folk rock sounds whcih grind me ... gotta go - this isnt "My Generation"
You ever have an album that just doesn't register? You hear it, but it just becomes backgrouns noise. It's not bad, it's not offensive. It's just there, making no impact whatsover. This is that album for me.
My Second The Who Album. Still can’t get into it. Dunno if it is the overall theme, genre or the different times. Probably a combination of all. In Hall Of The Mountain King they took from a famous classical piece. Sadly I can’t remember which one exactly.
There’s no way anyone has listened to the whole album
¿Es necesario otro disco de The Who?
👎
didn't enjoy it all too much, pretty bored listening
Critically acclaimed…although I not sure why. Their first foray into ‘concept’ album territory does not succeed overly for me. It doesn’t have the story arc of Quadrophenia or Tommy - or the songwriting quality, eventually giving up on the concept album idea with the failed Lifehouse project which became Who’s Next (which is totally brilliant). I like lots of Who stuff, but this just to me is not great.
Maybe it’s just me, but I just don’t understand how The Who achieved the success they did. This was turgid.
This album has a couple great rock riffs buried in a lot of meh psychedelic stuff that maybe I need to do more drugs to really "get".
Ein historisches Album welches ganz Who like ist. Aber halt auch etwas historisch wirkt. Witzige Idee mit den erfundenen Werbungen.
Gimmicky album
I Can See for Miles is great, but the rest of the album is lacking
I hated Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand so much. This album is whatever when I am not paying attention. When I start to pay attention, it is annoying.
I like the who, but I did not like this album. It played well into the title, with them doing commercials and stuff, but it was too gimmicky.
A very strange album
"I Can See For Miles" is a classic "Who" anthem... but the rest of this album is just filler tracks of not great quality, and loads of irritating advert style narratives. There are a lot of Who tracks over the years that I like, but aside from I can see for miles, there's little to enjoy on this album.
Got bored
i can see miles
The Who be smoking something on this one
Ni fu ni fa
Always felt like I should like this but I find it dont. Shame
Best Song: I Can See For Miles. It's the best song on here, but it must be one of the worst singles for The Who. It sounds, ironically, like a song created for commercials and it lacks any of the true musicality or rock oomph that can make The Who interesting. Worst Song: Heinz Baked Beans. Difficult to tell if this should even count as a track, but Spotify does so I will too. Overall: I don't get it. Is the whole thing a gimmick? Is it tongue-in-cheek? Does it matter how self-aware it is if the advertising thing sounds annoying either way? Definitely felt like the weakest album from The Who that I've heard.
not bad
I actually enjoyed the radio jingles more than the songs themselves.
It does have "I Can See For Miles" on it, but nothing else resonated.
Here's what this project has taught me about The Who: they've got some solid singles but the albums are pure garbage. They always try to put together these concept albums and it always falls flat. Which is a real shame because the musicality here is legitimately top-notch. It's just everything else - the lyrics, the concept, the damn skits - that's terrible. I wish they'd just focused on making good music.
What a weird album. Sounds like the avalanches or something a hip hop DJ would put together maybe prince Paul. I found it quite distracting and then when the songs come in they're nothing mind blowing to me.
I expected more
Not bad but kinda boring
Wtf
The Who is quickly becoming one of the artists on this list that I’ve discovered I just Don’t Get. No idea what their appeal is, they’re not bad enough at playing their music to warrant a 1 but I don’t like their music enough to go higher than a 2.
This was mostly just annoying.
Not missing much never bothering with the who
I’ve never really got The Who. Decent concept here, but not great songs and it all feels very messy.
# The Who, The Who Sell out Released 1967 2*, Not a terrible album, but I didn't hear a single song on this album that made me want to save it for listening again. No head-nodders or foot-tappers in the bunch. ## "Armenia City in the Sky" Speedy Keen Daltrey and Keen 3:48 3* Cool psychadelic sound. ## "Heinz Baked Beans" John Entwistle Moon, Entwistle and Townshend 1:00 2* Great horns and the "More Music, More Music" at the end of the track triggered my memory of this being sampled on Young MC's "Roll with the Punches" ## "Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand" Daltrey and Townshend 2:28 2* Too folk-rocksy for me. ## "Odorono" Townshend 2:34 2* Not bad, not great for me. ## "Tattoo" Daltrey, with Townshend 2:51 2* Fun tune. ## "Our Love Was" Townshend 3:23 2* What a great facsimile of the Beach Boys sound! ## "I Can See for Miles" Daltrey 4:05 3* Fun jam. ## "I Can't Reach You" Townshend 3:03 2* Fun jam. But the levels on the instruments seem wrong. ## "Medac" Entwistle Entwistle 0:57 2* Interesting, but doesn't get my head nodding. ## "Relax" Daltrey and Townshend 2:41 2* Not my cup of tea. ## "Silas Stingy" Entwistle Entwistle and Daltrey 3:07 3* Love the harmonies and melody. ## "Sunrise" Townshend 3:06 2* Not bad. ## "Rael (1 and 2)" Daltrey 5:44 2* Beach Boys-esque. ## "Rael 2" Townshend 0:47 2* Okay. ## "Glittering Girl" Townshend, with Entwistle 2:56 3* Not bad. ## "Melancholia" Daltrey 3:17 2* ## "Someone's Coming" Entwistle Daltrey 2:29 3* ## "Jaguar" Entwistle, with Townshend 2:51 2* ## "Early Morning Cold Taxi" Roger Daltrey, Dave Langston Daltrey 2:55 3* ## "In the Hall of the Mountain King" Edvard Grieg Instrumental (with vocalizations from the band) 4:19 2* Very cool song, but just not my style. ## "Girl's Eyes" Keith Moon Moon and Entwistle 3:28 3* Great guitar playing ## "Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand" (Alternative version) Daltrey and Townshend 3:19 3* All right, I guess. ## "Glow Girl" Daltrey and Townshend 2:24 3* Sounds the most like "The Who" sound that I have come to associate with them.
50+years removed from any of the cultural references means the album loses meaning and sounds mediocre in the end
i like the who but as i listened to this i just wanted every song to be the last. even the songs i added to my liked songs i think were just okay. it feel sacreligious giving them 2 stars but they just have so much better than this.
Meh
The third Who record that's come up for me in about the past month. I can only surmise that they really are a 'greatest hits' band. Some great high spots but an awful lot dross too
It may be The Who, but I also don't want to listen to 70 minutes of advertising, thanks.
Kind of a mess and weirdly tinny. Not a huge Who fan anyway, for whatever reason. I just never believe them. But they’re still responsible for quite a few classics. And I love Tommy. Also Keith Moon is the shit.
What do the point of this? Did they just want to pretend to be a radio station? Is it commentary on commercialism. Either way, it’s not good. There are moments where the clanging guitars that The Who are known for take over but it’s rare. I Can See For Miles is the only thing to take from The Who Sells Out. The fact this album is so universally loved is shocking. 4.8/10
I like The Who but this is too psychedelic for me. Not horrible but not great either.
This may be an interesting experiment, or more likely an irritating and arrogant display of style over substance. It's OK, I guess, as a novelty to show you can afford to waste the opportunity of an album, but if I'd bought this on vinyl in the 60s I'd have been mildly miffed. It's a joke that could only ever go so far, and utterly obviates any desire to listen to it again. Shame really, as there's actually a couple of good singles hidden in amongst the annoyance.
A meh album from The Who. There aren't any bangers on it och the concept album as a whole fell flat.
kinda weird
Not sure what the fuck this was but it's some of the worst The Who I've heard which is saying something. Only saved from a 1 because I Can See For Miles is good.
Pete Townshend is an ambitious songwriter. It's just a shame that after their supreme opening singles, he found himself tethered to the incredibly limited joke attached to a perm that the s Roger 'Brexit' Daltrey. There are flashes of brilliance on here, that often end up squashed by Daltreys rawwwwk delivery. It could have been a mid tier Bonzo Dog Band album without him. It has some wit and humour.
2 stars Honestly this record sucks, and I'm generally okay with The Who.
some catchy songs but it didn’t leave much of an impression on me. just another british boomer rock album gifted with high praise through the lens of nostalgia.
I think it's an interesting concept, I just couldn't bother to finish listening
flummigt 2
Genres: Psychedelic pop, power pop, art pop, mod pop Formed: London, England in 1964 Run time: 16 songs, 48 min, 18 sec “The Who Sell Out” is their third studio album. Track 1.1, "Armenia City in the Sky" - Sterling Whitaker of Ultimate Classic Rock wrote that the song "was an innovative sonic production…”. My opinion is “M’eh”. Track 1.2, "Heinz Baked Beans" - I’m sure they thought it was amusing to do, but what a waste of a minute of my time. Track 1.3, "Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand" - Another thinly veiled song about masturbation. Typical of The Who. Funny. 1.4, "Odorono" - A song about an aspiring artist, looking to be discovered, morphing into a deodorant advert. Why? 1.5, "Tattoo" - A teenager’s idea of what makes a man. 1.6, "Our Love Was" - 1.7, "I Can See for Miles" - Awesome. The Who at its best. 2.1, "Can't Reach You" - a song about an unattainable girl. It could probably have been a good song without the Charles Atlas advert stuck on the front. 2.2, "Medac" 2.3, "Relax" 2.4, "Silas Stingy" - a song about a miserly man. 2.5, "Sunrise" - 2.6, "Rael (1 and 2)" - I know the point of the album is them pretending to sell out, by advertising various products. What would the album have been like if they’d been working on producing a great album instead of “having a laugh”? It’s no surprise only one track was released as a single. Will I listen again? Hell No. My Rating: **
After listening to a few of their albums, I now think they are an overrated band.
Unbelievable that this lot have been successful for 60 odd years. 95% of their output is total dogshit 👍🏾
I'd rather not
Kinda camp, kinda corny, more soft than anything else from The Who
This funny looking album is a satirical take on the advertising industry and features a blend of rock, pop, and psychedelia. The album is filled with humorous interludes, such as the mock commercials for various products like deodorant, baked beans, and hair cream, which are interspersed throughout the record. Some of the most notable songs include "I Can See for Miles," "Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand," and "Tattoo." The sound of the album is not exactly enjoyable even though it gets a little bit better as the album progresses. The use of horns, strings, and vocal harmonies on tracks like "Our Love Was" and "Sunrise" adds some depth and richness to the album. Lyrically, The Who Sell Out is a commentary on the consumerism and commercialization of society. The album takes a satirical look at the advertising industry and the ways in which companies manipulate consumers to buy their products. The lyrics of "Odorono" and "Heinz Baked Beans" are particularly iconic to this, as they mock the idea that these products could make someone's life better. Although Baked Beans can definitely go a long way. Whilst it’s quite a funny record, it’s not something that I would ever revisit and it’s doesn’t earn a very high score.
Boring. Weird stereo effects that made my head hurt.
Generic '60s sound. The only unique thing they did apparently was putting ad jingles in it, but come on, everybody hates ad jingles.
I kinda get what they were going for by sticking the random jingles in between the actual songs. But perhaps it would have made more sense to just make a good album, instead.
The Who were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. This is the kitschiest album of all time with the stupidest and most annoying concept of all time. Maybe if they fully committed to the bit it would have worked, but this is essentially just a boring psychedelic pop album with fart sound effects before and after every song. Hide those nipples. 2/5
This is one of those things, man. "critics say this album is their best." Compared to Who's Next? Really? This is like a different band. Critics are the sellouts. I'm all about artists exploring their art, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Don't know unless you try. I don't think this one worked. Erica: I get it, it's a concept album. They're poking fun at themselves. Great. They were doing some jingles. But this music compared to their other music... do people even care about the music or just that the album is fun? Critics are the sellouts
I never really cared for The Who. I like a few of their songs but wasn’t familiar with any songs off of this besides I Can See For Miles And Miles And Miles And Miles……. I actually liked a few songs (Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand) but on the whole, meh. Just…..meh. And the commercial thing was dumb. At least there wasn’t 3 minute jerk-off synthesizer BS, so it that alone gets a star.
Thank god they got better
One good song and the rest goes on and on. I’m not buying.
Some odd tunes in here like "i can see for miles and miles" which show how incredible the Who are, however as an album found myself skipping so often as it was unlistenable fake jingles. generous 2
The Who, meh
i mean this is fairly bad and long
Didn't enjoy the concept so found it more annoying than anything.
Some good bits here and there, but pretty random! Not sure I'd place this in the best of their work, from the other Who albums I've listened to.
quanti album hanno fatto sti qua?
Snorefest for me. I just don't get it. All the songs sound the same, and the sound is not great. 1.5/5
Honestly I hate to say this about the who as they’re one of the greats really but this wasn’t great; I can see for miles is very good but the rest of it is either eh or just not good 2/5.
I understand what they were trying to do, but you still gotta make it sound good and those tracks infused with commercial sounds are horrendous to listen to.
I want Who songs, not fake commercials and gimmicks.
1 track on this album was wourth listening to
Every time I listen to the Who, I swear I'm going insane. I can't see how a band that would earnestly write and practice a song like "Silas Stingy" could be this revered by history. Sure, they have one or two good songs, but man, have I never understood how this weak psych-rock band still merits plays on classic rock radio. One song keeps this from being a one star, but it seems I'll never understand where all the praise comes from (aside from the talent of the band, which doesn't count for too much). Favorite track: "I Can See For Miles"
Maybe needs a second listen, but first impressions not great 2.5
I don’t think the band committed to rhe bit on this one - some stellar and interesting tracks at play on top of a topic ripe for satire, yet the end product feels too tame to make much of a statement. The interstitial tissue just isn’t there between the commercial jests and standard Who tracks to gel this into something more than a miscellaneous collection of songs.
I didn't think it was very good. Just strange/typical psychedelic 60s music but this was generally annoying. I suppose I was expecting more of a Who sound. Instead, got many soft melodies, strange songs, bad singing, and background sounds/noises. 4/10.
When they are firing on all cylinders The Who are magnificent, but so often they are just phoning it in. This for me is one of those. It just doesn't land. I like them when they are a bit pissed off. On this they aren't even close to being a little ticked off.
Meh…
As great as The Who are, they have major a problem with filler, and this album is one of the worst examples of it.
Concept gets in the way of some great songs unfortunately
I like the who but this is just a weird concept and not pleasant to listen to.
Eh, easily the worst of The Who's concept albums. It sure does not take itself seriously, but the concept of sprinkling annoying jingles out across the record really is horrible. And then BAM, 'I Can See For Miles' hits as the closer of side 1. What a track on an otherwise unremarkable album. I do not get the praise, but then again, you have to praise Moon for his drumming, Townsend for his guitar, Entwistle for his bass, and Daltrey for his ethereal vocals... Man what a group.
Meh... I get the concept, I just don't really care for this sound. I prefer the last 2 Who albums over this.
I didn't really enjoy this album, which is a shame given how iconic the Who are.
I mean the cover says it all
just not my shit
Not a fan of the who

I refuse to listen to a 5+ hour album or collection of albums or whatever this nonsense is. I gave it 32 songs and that was enough for me. 2 stars for wasting my time.
Hmm. Interesting album from The Who. Some good sounding tracks but a bit too experimental for my tastes.
Used to listen to The Who quite a bit in a greatest hits sort of way. But the more I hear of them the less I like them. And boy do I hear them on here.
very 60s pop probably really popular then but not very interesting 2.5
Odd for a concept album even for the Who. One of the few albums I struggled to make all the way through. FWIW, I thought QOTSA did the concept much better with songs for the deaf
An acid concept album? Very sixties. Not many tracks I would return to. Such a love of the tambourine.
Respect it, don't like it. I can see the fun they had making this album, but I didn't really enjoy it.
closer to what I expected from The Who, not great apart from I Can See For Miles. why the enthusiasm for this?
The pirate radio station / commercial jingles format is a fun idea but the band just aren’t witty enough to pull it off. The whole thing is a mess, saved only by some smart playing - but the songs and stories really lack sustained interest. If only they’d had a proper songwriter in the band? And with perhaps the most vomit inducing album cover from a mainstream band of all time, there’s nothing saving this. Please may this be the last Who album I just listen to?
Not for me.
Just boring
Dont really like the Who
I just don't like 'em.
No wonder punk started Would have been better off putting Eminence Front on repeat for 40 minutes instead. I might not like The Who.
Definitely more annoying, surprising how little I enjoyed this
why oh fucking whyyyyyy must every second album be this pop bullshit from the late 60s? 2/5.
The Who Takes The Piss. Sounds more like they were trying to write a comedy album that pokes fun at consumerism, and then wrote the music after the fact. Most songs are flat and dull, marred by poor production. The only saving grace is the song I Can See For Miles, an oasis in a desert of mediocre music. Not worth much.
This album was almost all new for me. I knew the main single "I Can See For Miles" and I think that's the best song here. Not many others connected for me. The goofy fake commercials and radio interludes are fun but the main set of songs here isn't very strong. I see this more as a snapshot of where they were as a band - their early hits were behind them and they were about to make some very ambitious albums. Hilarious album cover though.
How wacky! I had to check that my Bluetooth was set up right cause it sounded like some weird radio station at first. Interesting concept, for sure, but I guess I was hoping for more of the “Who’s Next” sound.
Pros: - Really funny stuff. I love that "Heinz Baked Beans" is trumpets and very deep timpani. - I Can See For Miles -- a solid track Cons: - while it's a nice album, I don't think it's as good as WHO's NEXT. I'm interested to see how many other artists have multiple albums on this list. - A couple songs tend to run on a little - I'm giving it a 2. It's a nice album, but for me it probably sits in the top 80% of best 1001 albums. Misc: - If I had more time I would have read more about the album. I'm assuming it's kind of a response to them being called sellouts? - so funny to hear a full album in mono. I don't think i'd ever do it but I think it's a good songwriting trick to write / record a song in mono to limit yourself and then pan instruments afterwards. - "Tattoo" is not mono
I really like The Who. Except for this record. Is it a concept about a novelty record? Doesn’t matter all that much because I don’t care a whole lot for most of the songs anyway.
A little soft. Was distracted while listening but nothing really hit for me.
I mean, I get the joke and all, and I do like The Who, but, nah, for the most part this album doesn't do much for me.
Not a big fan of the Who and the adverts are kind of an annoying concept. But I Can See For Miles is brilliant and I do like the cover
These guys love a concept album, eh? It’s a funny sight gag for the album cover. I’m not pumped by the music though. It’s just bland. How many Who albums does someone really need to hear to get the gist of it anyways? Give me Baba O’Reilly and call it a day.
I feel like this is definitely not the best of what The Who has to offer... They could go for miles and miles and miles
This one didn't vibe with me at all. Felt dumb. Maybe I missed the point?
The third album from The Who is an interesting concept album, in which the band attempted to imitate a pirate radio station from Europe. These radio stations used to broadcast similar music and ads as real stations, but without a valid license until they were outlawed soon after release of this album. This album is now a tribute to these pirate stations and a lot of songs on the album are actually short ad jingles for real or imaginary products. This concept slightly ruined the commercial performance of the album because the entire album was seen as a joke, even if the music was still phenomenal. In retrospect, this album glorified the pop art days of the 60's with great music (even if some are just ad jingles), and can be considered one of the best performing concept albums.
On the good side the execution and recording is great and rich, on the bad side this is cheesy af
Not up to snuff. Big ok’ meh.
I Can't Reach You oli ihan mukava, hieman Belle & Sebastianmainen rallattelu mutta oikein mikään muu kappale ei jäänyt positiivisesti mieleen.
No, it gives me no pleasure to say this album doesn't work. It gives me no pleasure, indeed. The Who Sell Out is a concept album which purports to be a radio broadcast, with adverts appearing between the songs. Is that a wry look at the commercialisation of music, or just a conceit that doesn't really say that much? Ultimately, the latter. The Who doing a fake ad for baked beans just comes off as silly. Separating the jingles and the concept from the album, the songs do not hold up especially well. The Who simply weren't built for light, melodic pop, and their attempts are just featureless pastiches. Occasionally, The Who do flaut their heft, and the possibility of a rockier, heavier, more cogent album emerges. But that just depresses further, as the listener wonders what could have been. A deviceful misstep.
Good album very 60's still, doesn't sound anything like the who of the 70's
It was a fun album to listen to. I don’t think I’d listen to it again though.
1/10 6/10 5/10
An interesting concept album with lots of sampled 'advertising' sounds. It went on a bit too long with the added 1995 tracks however (I stopped listening at Melancholia). I did like 'Sunrise' though.
Meh
Sekavaa menoa
2nd September 2021 Listened on my phone in the day, Dan and Cox came round for dinner in the evening. I like the 60s radio inserts and the anarchic 60s style of the record.
2.5 - interesting enough to start with, as a concept album with the commercials and radio sound. Peaked at "I Can See for Miles" but fell apart after that. By the last few songs I was just waiting for it to be over.
Odd collection of tv adds and jingles.
the concept of this is completely lost on me. its just a load of fucking around. they must have thought they were so clever when they came up with whatever the concept is. townsend sings way too much on this album. there's a reason he isn't the lead singer, its because he's got a shite voice.
I was not very moved by this album. Just because an album is a concept-album, doesen't mean it's genius. But this is not bad at all, it's just not really for me... today I think.
Interesting concept, but a poor Who album in relation to their singles or later great rock albums.
Pretty average. 2.5
Not the best o the Who
Gillar The Who men det här var för konstigt för mig. Lite för psykadeliskt/60 tal
Boring
I can’t reach you vond ik het leukst. Not for me tho
2/5
Quite listenable, disposable pop rock. Some of the songs are pretty stupid, like "Silas Stingy" and the half-baked concept of radio jingles adds nothing. I quite enjoy the way it waters down psychedelic rock into a poppier concoction. No idea why it belongs on this list when at least three of their stronger albums are already included! 2.5.
To be honest this album didn't really catch me. There's a few good songs. Definitely not my favorite Who album.
too eird
It's got one or two nice tracks on it, but the rest of it wears thin. The fake radio/ads thing gets old quick
2/5 way too light, I expected more
It's aight, best bits just make me want to listen to the kinks. Early sampling and stuff is G doe
Where's the book Pete? Apart from "I can see for Miles" and "the Last Time" found this distinctly average. They were capable of so much better than this. And still no one has seen that book that Pete Townsend was doing research for... 2/5
Not bad, but not a huge fan
pretty lame
It was pretty experimental for a rock group, but not great to listen to.
Didn't listen closely
This album is... odd. And the stuff that's not odd feels really average to me. It's pulling me more toward 2 stars than 3.
bara knas
Weird.
Thoroughly brutal listen, everything sounds so half baked, maybe I am just not British enough for this but it just sounds like an album that was made purely to fulfill a contract or tie people over for a bigger future release. Maybe I’m being harder on the Who but when you know what they were capable of, this sounds even worse.
Poop with a little bit of pee
Pile of steaming poop. Somebody must have told Pete Townshend that he is a creative genius, and the world needs his brilliant rock operas. Whoever fed his ego needs shooting.
Pretty ass
I never really liked The Who. I just don't get it. This record is annoying. I didn't enjoy any part of it.
Even without the painfully unfunny skit adverts they did, the music behind them wasn't any good and definitely not as good as their other albums on here, and I don't really see much in The Who at all. I'm actually surprised that it's even managed to get a sitewide rating of 3. I'm confident that if this was not released by The Who it gets nowhere near a 3. Also the less that I look at that album cover the better. Makes me wanna throw up.
I thought the definition of selling out sacrificing your artistic vision for the misguided sake of producing music that will sell. Here we hear The Who sacrificing music that will sell for the sake of their misguided artistic vision.
No es serio.
Uh... what was that? While I know the Who and one of the songs here, I'd never heard of this album or that they'd done this "concept". Probably for good reason based on the result. This felt like a joke from the start. And maybe the general concept was, based on the execution of the "ads". But the songs really weren't good either. I'm not sure if they just didn't put effort into anything when they made this, or if this is actually them trying. I'm also not sure which would be worse. My main issues came from the tone and the lyrical content. The music was over-manipulated (a lot of reverb/echo layers) with dreamy-sounding vocals. It reminded me of the Byrds, though I think the Byrds did it better. There was almost no bite to it, which felt odd to me given some songs I've heard from the Who. The childish lyrics weren't limited to the skits, but were unfortunately in every track as well. Honestly, at times I wasn't sure if I was listening to the start of a skit or an actual track. The more I listened to, the more annoying it all got. I don't really care for the Who as it is. Their other album I've gotten here so far (My Generation) was fine at best. This one falls well below that. The best track, I Can See For Miles, was actually worse when hearing it as part of the album. Whatever it is they're trying to sell here, I'm not buying. Overall: .75/5
Wow… this was definitely a choice. I was already in a bad mood today but this made it significantly worse. And why is there ads in the middle ?? 1/5
I Can See For Miles is a pretty good song but against the rest of this album it becomes a verdant oasis, a light in the dark. An album criticizing consumerism and examining music's place as yet another commodity would be intriguing but they did absolutely nothing with it. They could have at least committed to the concept/message and tried to incorporate it into the "real" songs. Instead it's just a jumble of unrelated songs with a few fake ads in the first half. It's dumb.
Only one The Who album needs to be on the list and we already listened to it (Who's Next, specifically). There are a lot of artists on the list who are overrepresented but fuck me if The Who aren't the most egregious anyway the gimmick here isn't nearly as cute or as funny as they think it is, I can think of at least 1001 other albums I'd recommend someone to listen to before they die before I'd even accidentally remember this one. it sucks. even the big hit off this is low tier The Who. I genuinely hate this
Mer eller mindre olyssningsbart
Felt like an injoke im not in on.
boring af
I don't know, maybe back in the 60x it was something new and fresh, but most of the songs are impossible to listen now, I am getting irritated lol. The funniest thing is that album has 96 rating on Metascore with critica reviews like “After 50 years it still sounds fresh”. Ahaha, oh my god, after 50 years it still sounds like a joke
Meh
favs: our love was sunrise rating 0.7/5
No
No, just no. The Who albums ive had have been music for Brexiteers and this is more of the same but with a shit concept about adding adverts in.
absolutely not
Quirky concept. I appreciate the lore but couldn’t get through enough.
An album that does absolutely nothing for me...
This was a journey. It was okay.
Absolute drivel.
The Who are so hit and miss for me. A really great singles band but very few good full albums. This album is no exception - I can see for miles is a great song but damn the rest of this album is terrible. Also, I’ve always found the cover to be unsettling - no one should be sitting in a pile of baked beans. Yuck. One star for the one good song on this album.
This is awful. The conceit just does not work for me and there are not enough strong songs on here to overcome the crap. Give me Songs For The Deaf any day
boring
1/5
Something really irritated me about this album. I think because I expected more. Just a bunch of silly sounding songs. Sounded more like a compilation of shit b-sides. Nearly got a 2 because of the adverts, I like that concept, but couldn’t justify it.
Yeah no, muchas canciones. No lo escuché ajdkk
Trash.
I love some Who, but not this Who apparently.
3/10 - honestly overrated, could be another generic 70s album
Not a lot of musically redeeming qualities on this album outside of one or two songs. It's another weird album and I don't appreciate the attempts at humor.
horrible, boring
Awful save for one song.
One of the ugliest album covers I’ve ever seen. It was fine music but yeah
Worst album I’ve listened to on this list so far. Lots of trash with a few decent songs in the middle, but even they feel unfinished.
1,4/5
Not a mood
Pretty meh. Doesn't hold up to time.
Weird. Maybe it was funny in the 60's but just falls a little thin these days. I can see for Miles a fairly strong song but the rest I'll never re-visit
No more the who please...
This is old style English psychedelic (sort of) music. I don't like it. It's schmaltzy and childish.
Really didn’t like this. I think that I’m discovering beyond Who’s Next I’m not so into the Who.
Previously I noted that I don't dislike Pink Floyd, I dislike Late Pink Floyd. This made me hate The Who, despite enjoying 'Who's Next'
this is the musical equivalent of the 'Scratch' chapter at the end of The State of the Art, not really any fully fleshed out songs just a bunch of thoughts mixed with capitalist psychobabble
Lots of schtick before and after "I Can See For Miles". Not even a good comedy album.
Terrible execution on an already dumb concept album idea. This came out after their debut album but somehow sounds even older than it. The commercials were stupid. The only song off of it that I’ve heard before was I Can See For Miles, but even that one wears out its welcome. Actively hated listening to nearly every part of this.
I'm starting to get a feel for Who albums...Tommy was garbage and so is this.
1 stern
I like a handful of The Who songs, but unfortunately not the ones on this album. It was unique with the jingles and pop art take. Hard for me to get through.
One great song doesn’t make it for me.
I did not enjoy this one. A bit too experimental for my taste
Overall, it's just bad. The only song worth a listen is, "I can see for miles" ~ 1.3 stars
as a certified The Who hater, you know i love hearing them at their most grating and self indulgent
This made me grumpy. Did not like at all.
The cover artwork is as campy as this album 😆
Sorry, but I don't like The Who at all. I made it to song 14, then I just listened briefly to the songs until the end.
I don't get The Who. Most of the songs on this album sound like something off a kids album - happy bouncy silly simple songs about strange characters. There's a concept to this album where fake radio jingles are interspersed among the songs... They're typically very short jingles at the end of a track, but then there's Odorono and Medac, which are either really long fake jingles that's are really long buildups for a dumb punchline, or they're just silly The Who songs with really long buildups for a dumb punchline. No, I did not care for this album at all.
I don’t understand their popularity, this is mostly banal with too much drum. Originally a decent singles band, but once you’ve written “I hope I die before I grow old”, you should stop, but concept albums and rock operas?
Nope, another one of their albums I detest. I’m not even much of a fan of The Who, besides some of their more famous tracks. This is just unlistenable for me.
