Reviews (page 5 of 7)

I quite enjoyed it, I feel like my childhood primed me to enjoy country music

I like this, it's got some nice songs and good performances, but it's not as good as other albums in this genre. Happy to listen again, but won't be searching out.

A pleasant listen that embodied American country music. Enjoyed the two listens, but will most likely not listen again. 3/5

This type of country music is something I can tolerate because there wasn’t the annoying sass in the voice or anything like that. Don’t get me wrong I’d never pick it out but it went by genuinely smoothly and I’d listen to it again as background.

Not one of my favourite/usual genres and I feel like I'd have liked this a lot more hearing/seeing it live but points for excellent construction - it's hard to deny this is just a really nice sounding album. Clear instrumentation and vocals. 6/10 3 stars

Very pleasant album to listen to. Lover her voice.

A quaint little country album that does what it does tremendously well; yet it still leaves me wanting more. The writing here is scenic and nostalgic - I especially love the life piece ballad that is 'Love at the Five & Down' and the fiercely exected 'Fly By Night'. Vocally and instrumentally speaking, Nanci and co deliver on all fronts, and as usual with this genre, I love when they harmonize, usually in these sticky choruses. While not blown away, I still enjoyed my little stroll through the locales painted by Nanci on this album, and I'm sure there is more to dive into lyrically well below the surface.

A pleasant enough country/folk album. It felt like it took longer than 30-some minutes but this isn't a genre I typically enjoy. Anyway. 2.7/5-> 3/5

I don't know enough about country to say whether this is groundbreaking for the genre or not, but it was pleasant. Nanci's voice is quite nice to listen to. I do have to be in a specific mood for this, though.

This was much better than I was expecting, nice country stuff. 65/100

Nanci Griffith is one of my favorites. This is not her best.

Country mit netter Stimme Instrumente etwas verspielt, sonst tolle Stimmung 3/5

It’s a decent background music sort of album. I’m a sucker for folksy harmony vocals but it’s not quite a 4.

Her voice and the music are both nice, but nothing grabbed me in a way that deserved more than 3 stars.

File under the eighties country albums that aged extremely well (contrary to some others in this list). Griffith was a good songwriter--so sad that she passed away at 69--the production values are devoid of all the cheesy shenanigans typical of the decade when this album was released, and you often haved either interesting harmonies / chord progression, gripping arrangements (especially on the violin / fiddle), or a very lively, rock-derived energy in the best tunes from this record. A couple of duds, but good tracklisting overall. Country is not a genre I'm overly familiar with, but I'm glad Dimery's list help me find my way into it at least. Putting this record in my "waiting room". After all, 1986 is not a stellar year for music by far, so who knows? Maybe there will be room for this record in my own list at the end. Highlights: Love At The Five And Dime, Banks of the Pontchartrain, Lookin' for the Time (Workin' Girl), One of These Days, Fly By Night, The Wing And The Wheel 3/5 for the purposes of this list. 8/10 for more general purposes (5+3) Number of albums left to review: more than 200, approximately - I've temporarily lost count here. Number of albums I'll include in my own list: half so far, approximately. Number of albums I *might*  include: a quarter, approximately (including this one) Number of albums I'll never include: another quarter, or just a little more (many other albums are more important to me)

high 3, folk

Country - pleasant enough banjo n' harmony action from an artist that I'd never heard of previously. Better than other country? Not so much.

Pleasant enough but nothing special, another album where I didn't even notice it end.

Starts off good and never matches it. It's a shame because I wanted to find some more good country music. This is overall fine, but there's so many better albums in the genre that it doesn't feel justified being here.

Solid old timey country album. Anyone who can get Lyle Lovett to sing back up on their album is cool with me.

I’m a bit torn on this one. It’s not my style of music: country/folk. That being said, I didn’t mind listening to it. She’s got a lovely voice and it reminds me of Texas, which I’ve called home for over 20 years. Not sure how often I’ll go back to listen but I wouldn’t mind hearing this at say the Kerrville Folk Festival or if we rolled up to Lukenbach and heard this!

I'm coming into this one absolutely cold. It immediately feels like very storybook country to me, sung in an unsurprising style. Very little has deviated from expectation. I would call it pleasant, but entirely forgettable.

A poor man's stevie nicks but still good

I love the story songs. She has a unique voice that I enjoy in small doses.

Nice enough, but I didn't hear anything that made this stand out.

Solid set of country tunes. The performances were all top-notch, as is to be expected with Nashville. And the songwriting is decent, and maybe even better than that. But nothing really stuck with me. Maybe i'd have to give this more listens, but i'm sure I won't.

I found this album to be pleasant enough but I can't say I'll likely reach to spin it again. I appreciate Nanci's role in music. She was a darling of WXPN so while I'm not fluent in her work, there is definitely a familiarity. I confuse a lot of the mid-to-late-80s country/folk/female genre. By that I mean Alison Kraus, Nanci Griffith, Kate & Anna McGarrigle. The album cover caught my eye...I loved eating at the Woolworth's lunch counter in college (circa 1986). Also that's Lyle Lovett on the right. He sang some backups on the album.

Felt a lot like Richard and Linda Thompson. Maybe a little too country and a little too sappy for my taste but it was a nice listen.

Lovely voice. Easy listening country album but not my cup of tea.

Enjoyed

Clear and crisp- intelligent and easy to listen to. Sadly not my cup of tea but I can recognise this is a good record.

This was fine; doesn’t seem particularly necessary alongside some of the better country we’ve already met with on the list.

Surprised to find this “country/folk” on the list. Reminds me of Emmylou Harris.

Not bad but too gentle and ultimately unremarkable.

Cool music between old school and new country. More of a folk vibe

Could only listen to 2 songs but she is very good in general

Pretty much seems to solidly hit that sweet female voice over a lot of slow paced folk country. Its pretty boring... though it is elevated a bit by Goin' Gone and Workin' Girl. Not particularly compelling or interesting. A generous 3.

too køntri 4 me

I enjoyed this album, it was a very pretty-sounding country record. The instrumentals were immaculate and Nanci's vocals were very soothing. Not huge on country in general but this was good.

It's just inoffensive waiting room music that you'd hear in a small American town.

I’m not normally a country fan, but I enjoyed this. Favorite songs were The Last of the True Believers, Banks of the Pontchartrain, Lookin’ For the Time, and Goin Gone

Very simple and good, but not my thing

Nice. Borders on too nice. But overall good playing and writing. 3.5/5

Highlight: St Olav's Gate This is how I imagine American country music sounded like in the 80s to early 90s - mellow, tough, delicate. Country with a touch of folk. Perhaps country pop? Nanci described her style as "folkabilly". The charm wore off by track 6 unfortunately. Overall: 5/10

Pretty good

It's fine. A solid 2.5.

Pretty but didn't stand out, can't remember any specific song - just blended together.

A solid country album. A pleasant listen.

I always thought of her as folk but this is pretty country. If I hadn't heard her other work I'd have thought she was a C&W singer trying to sound like Dolly P. Not my favorite Nanci Griffith album but I still enjoy her overall.

Not a bad country album if you’re in the mood for her voice

Love at the Five and Dime is cute

I remembered liking Nanci Griffith a lot more than I liked this record. But then I remembered that it’s Patty Griffin I like. There are similarities (besides the name) so I’ll forgive myself the confusion. This was… good. I liked the music more than the vocals and felt the lyrics were… thin.

Album improved as it went on Standout songs: More than a whisper Lookin for the time One of these days

I'd never heard of this so came in blind. I found it to be some pleasant country/ folk. The songs were well crafted and I enjoyed her voice. Whilst I can enjoy the skill, it didn't light any fires.

I mean its a solid country record but i think there are better out there.

Hard to get on board with this one, good album title, nice voice and some good lyrics in there. Country just ain't my thing. Favourite song: More than a whisper

Nice and easy listening, nothing wrong, nothing standing out.

Enjoyed this more than I expected to, maybe somewhere between a 3 and 3.5?

Quite forgettable and I'm not really a fan of the southern American accent.

Good music, not breathtaking.

Lovely little old-fashioned country album

It's a fine album. So many country albums that are significantly better than this that are omitted. Nothing against this album or singer, but why this one? 3/5

No es mi estilo

A nice relaxing album.

I didn't expect to like this. And I didn't. BUT. It did grow on me. Though these songs are painfully Nashville with the weirdly not-quite-country production. You know, full-on rock production values but let's add a bunch of overly-dramatic steel guitar and fiddle parts so people know it's country? Hate it. And Nanci's voice is alright when she's not working so hard to put a country warble in it. The thing that surprised me, though, is that these songs are actually REALLY well written. Like, this is legitimately great songwriting. Shame they countried the hell out of 'em. I'd love to hear every one of these songs covered as rock or folk songs. Or even just a voice and a guitar. I bet the demos were great. Unfortunately, the final product isn't. It's only almost great.

Pretty good for country. Nanci gets a lot of emotion across. Sounds all a bit the same by the end. Not to my taste. 7/10

It´s plain vanilla country. She has a happy voice which I would not find acceptable for a male country singer but it works for her.

After the first song , I thought, okay, if she wrote that one, it's a 3. Turns out she wrote the whole album: well-crafted lyrics about ordinary life; the instrumentation is a bit bland, but it is 1986 after all; less twang than I prefer but at lease it's not commercial.

Nothing exceptional or mind blowing, just earnest and sweet country music.

Pretty standard and not very noteworthy country folk stuff, not the most engaging. Good thing I like the genre. 3 stars.

Pretty decent 80’s style country. Nanci Griffith has a nice voice. I’m glad to have been exposed to it.

Not bad honestly. I like the production, arrangements, and performance. Her voice is nice. The songs are a little corny, but it’s pretty good at what it’s doing. Solid 3 I think. Not necessarily for me but it’s nice.

Good album. I'm interested in listening to some of her other stuff.

Solid country album.

simple music but at least she has a nice voice

Lovely country voice.

Country

It's good, but I'm rarely in the mood for this kind of music

It was nice.

At last. I knew you could pick ‘em

I was confused how there was something from 1986 that I had never heard of but the first bars of the first song played and I was like, oh, right. Back then I would have given this album the time of day. Now I'm a little more susceptible to the charm of well told stories of love gone right and love gone wrong. Is Nanci a stand out artist? Is this album grounbreaking? Should it be on this list? No idea, but it is certainly listable and breath of fresh air compared to the streak of middling hip hop and grunge albums I've been given recently.

An enjoyable album throughout. Rather poppy, but some lovely melodies. Worth a revisit at a later date.

I am not a huge fan of country, but this was... efficient. It did what it needed to do. At least it wasn't Americana, or nu-country (rock posing as country). I felt Griffith's voice lent itself well to the songs she was doing, the lyrics were well-written and the music was sparse. But again, country. Just... not my bag.

Nice voice with that country drawl to it (Goin Gone was my favorite song). Decent backing band that provides a lot of different sounds - its like celtic country, which has a nice twist to it. The album did grow on me over a few listens - it's an easy listen. Still, it feels more like an album you can put on in the background and let it play. Not going to be distracting, sets a good mood, but a bit of set it and forget it.

Pleasant enough country music. I'm not a big country fan, but I didn't mind listening. Liked the last track in particular (The Wing and the Wheel). Love at the Five and Dime wasn't bad either.

A nice relaxing country-bluegrass excursion. Beautiful voice, simply, but elegant songwriting, and complementary instrumentation. It isn’t an exciting album, but enjoyable, nonetheless. 3/5

Great voice. Not really my thing. Although it floats around the edges of some stuff I like a lot like REM. Love at the Five and Dime was good. Can't knock it as an album, and it seems to have aged well especially considering it was 1986, a time particularly prone to aging. Glad wasn't subjected to the one with From A Distance on it because that song very much is late 80s schlock. Although Cliff Richard is probably more to blame for my dislike.

Great voice and spond

I liked this a lot, it was calming and nice. She has a lovely voice.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: it was ok, started off very nicely but ultimately a bit slow to finish with Favourite song: Track 2 - Love at the Five & Dime

Fly By Night the standout and unfair synecdoche. Rooted music, pulled up and washed without violence, on record comes across timelessly almost-bland. It's otherworld music; Here, the frontier is internal.

Not my preferred genre, but this was... fine. It made for decent background music while I was at work, but nothing really stood out to me. I think if I was more of a country fan would have liked this a lot more. Not bad, but just okay.

Very pleasant, nice nanci

This was very pleasant.

This album was fine. Nothing to write home about. Mostly country sounding.

I kinda liked it

I enjoyed that album about as much as I ever have enjoyed country music. Didn't catch much of the content and themes as I was cooking, but the overall vibe was quite palatable.

Some lovely sweet country vibes. No relation.

As far as cut music goes, this was just fine

Nothing objectively bad about, but it's not my taste. Favorite song: Fly by night

Kind of soothing.

More fiddle, please. Best track: Banks of the Pontchartrain

Pretty much what I would expect from a Country album. Nanci has a great voice and the musicians are very good. 2.5 / 5 stars.

Pretty easy listening. It does not sound like much other 80s music on this list, which is appreciated.

Fun but got a little grating towards the end

3 overall good but not my jam

Generic country featuring a female vocalist. Meh.

Not my kind of thing and I really enjoyed it, which is the best praise I can offer it

More than a Whisper is tremendous. Don't we all need that? Griffith has a uniquely American sound with more than a touch of twang. I. had never gone deeper than her Greatest Hits so this was a treat. I found myself drawn in by her lyrics which seem to speak pretty universally to the human condition.

Alas, I am not a true believer. But it's the genre, not Nanci Griffith. And in fact, while I generally dislike country music, Griffith’s style is more palatable than most popular country. Maybe it’s her folk roots. Maybe it’s that this mid-80s album came out just before country music took a turn towards pop and showiness and derivative lyrics.

yawn...

Pleasant country/folk. Definitely didn't mind it in the background as I was working but probably wouldn't throw it on to listen deliberately. Almost quaint in a cute way. If I loved the genre this could definitely be a 4, but 3.5 for me.

I started listening to this as background music and found it pleasant but maybe somewhat conventional country-folk. Then I read an obituary for Nanci Griffith that praised her confessional-style songwriting, so I gave it another listen paying more attention to the lyrics. While maybe over-the-top folksy in places, they were inventive and had a narrative flair to them that does really add a lot. So I'd encourage listeners to give the songwriting some attention, you'll enjoy it a lot more.

That country thing is not my fave. But this was OK

Powerhouse of a voice and some nice songs, but overall average for me! ‘Love at the 5 and dime’ is my favorite.

Light 7

4/11, 36%

This was pretty country but I enjoyed it!

Not sure why this one just hit me the right way. I normally can't stand most country

There was a folksiness that I liked on this, but I give it three stars because I did not pay real attention.

Okay. Country laid on this thick is a bit hard for me to digest, and I don't like Griffith's voice at times - lots of elision alongside that weird Stevie Nicks bleat. But - the songwriting is strong and topics are well observed. There's an overall feeling of bittersweet that pervades, which fits the country idiom perfectly. You can cry into your beer over a few of these numbers - but do you want to?

It’s boring and clichey, but it’s going down with 3 stars because it’s an 80’s album without those horrible synths and terrible production

This album was a nice change of pace. Enjoyed the pedal steel guitar. Nanci Griffith has a very sweet vocal that's lovely enough to listen to, but ultimately a bit bland. Fave Songs: Love at the Five and Dime, Love's Found a Shoulder, One of These Days, Fly by Night, St. Olav's Gate

Country. Ni fu ni fa.

Listened on 3/8/23 3.5/5 Favorite song: five and dime I love country music and this album did not disappoint - it was very easy to listen to and soothing but not a standout

Nice little folksy/country album

First it sounded like hay day music with vocals. I guess she is from the US? Hope you can feel the sarcasm. It’s a cozy album. I imagine me and Annika on a road trip, having this music on in the background while sitting in the trunk of the car, looking at the horizon, planning where to go next. 3.5

Country. It was fine. 3 stars.

Not exactly revolutionary but enjoyable and the songwriting on here is really great at times. everything she writes sounds so authentic in her voice (duh) and feels like fresh air. best tracks: the last of the true believers, banks of the pontchartrain, love at the five and dine

Olipas miellyttävä ääni ja kivoja biisejä muutenkin.

I remember growing up my parents had a close friend who raved about Nanci Griffith, I never did check her out so I was looking forward to hearing this one. She had a pleasant voice and could sing a good story, this was a nice listen. 3 stars

Very refreshing. When country music is good like this is, you get something that has a lot of emotion and earnestness behind its simplicity. That said, I don't know if this is a 1001-albums-to-listen-to kind of good. Some tracks were standouts though, like More Than a Whisper and Lookin' For the Time (Workin' Girl).

Not her best album, but still nice and relaxing.

Country. Okay.

quality but not my jam

Country. Ni fu ni fa.

Good vibes, nice music, solid record.

Beautiful and engaging country. For bits and pieces the music stars into generic Amy Grant style blandness but overall this sounds like it broke a few molds and led to inspire some even better Americana

Pretty decent country music tbf

Nice, but didn't hook me - 3 stars

Very sweet sounding stuff. Alotta cool elements but personally not something I go put of my way to listen.

Uh Oh. Country. Alright, lets see if I find something to enjoy here. Yes. Quite a lot. Aside from the steel guitar, most of the instrumentation is very nice, the fiddle gets a little whiney in places, but the layered melodic harmonies are quite lovely. Both Last of the True Believers and Love at the Five and Dime I would listen to again, St. Olaf's gate was terrible. Just stereotypical country. Then so was most of the rest. I liked One of These Days. Would have been a 4 or 5 star album without steel guitar. Instead it's 3.

Really nice 80s country album. Nothing crazy but very good. She has a really unique accent for country.

Good, but nothing really stood out to me

Nice folky, almost country album.

Prima achtergrondmuziek.

Now that’s some old school, folksy, country sound. I don’t know if I love it or hate it.

Pleasant enough but not going to stick with me

Had Flyer by her and liked it. Not much of a country music lover She has a nice voice and the music is easy on the ears.

Country + folk which is a decent combo imo

a vid, šta ja znam, ovo je čisti country, a trenutno baš ne paše nešta, a i ne bi si ovo baš pustio - al da sam na nekom westu, tipa Red Dead Redemption kind of ambience, priroda i to, pasalo bi, ovako sada na ovu magluštinu ujutro....oprosti Nanci špenci, al svejedno nije baš dvojka.

Not terrible but a bit too country for my taste. Some good turn of phrase and some good songs - but not a fantastic record.

Rating: 6/10 Best songs:

Nothing interesting to me on this album. 5/10

not a huge country fan, but i did enjoy this!

Pretty good country style album. I'd come back to this.

Nanci Griffith is one of the first contemporary country artists, following the likes of George Strait as they modernized the production of country music while still sticking to their county roots. Griffith's songs are mighty good, while also tender and loving. My main hangups are with the production, which is a little too polished for my liking. One of the great aspects of older country songs was that they had a lot of personality in the rocky production, giving it a sort of gritty edge. This record, to contrast, is all smoothed out. Too round.

This has a nice feel to it. There are moments that make me think of some other place, some other reality that I would like to visit. Will have to give this one some more attention.

Didn't know she died last year...bit taken aback. Not a massive fan but saw her at a festival once. Anyway. Very country. Lovely voice. Do the songs stand out? Ok to be honest, no. It is very listenable and I often say I don't like the genre much. 3

I don't usually listen to Country too much, but this album is not bad. It sounds more modern than some of the genre classics, but it remains acoustic throughout, so no country rock either. The first two tracks especially stood out for me. After those, the album loses some steam, but it's still 3/5.

A really nice album with catchy singable songwriting, a storytellers gift for a beautiful lyric as well as production that is graceful and always in service to the song. I could see Nancy Griffith holding the same lofty position in my library as the brilliant Lucinda Williams. 3.5 🌟

This didn't stand out for me - a good country album was all I heard.

Country? Meh.

Nice country with good melody and harmonies, but without anything that puts it above other similar artists.

Beautiful, but a bit bland altogether

Pleasant bit of Country

Voz interessante e fluiu bem.

A sweet voice. Great story telling if a bit broad strokes

Highlights: More than a Whisper, Lookin' For the Time, One of These Days.

Never heard any Nanci Griffith before and it's fine country music

I was surprised to hear two songs I recognized that had been made famous by Kathy Mattea, who I loved when I was a kid. Not as much of a country fan these days, but this album is pretty good. 3/5 stars

She's not my cup of tea but this isn't objectively bad music. 3.5

Folksy and alright

The music is good for what was happening in country music at the time. Her voice is nice and sweet. The songs are OK. More than a few times thaough, it felt to me like she didnt' believe what she was singing. As if she was just... singing... as a job, not as a passion.

A zero impact album

First song that's nice. By the end I got the feeling I had listened to the one song. Also maybe just me but I couldn't hear the lyrics because of the production.

Too folky for me

It's a nice totally forgettable listen, Love at the Five and Dime is nice. Heck Chester my boy its all nice, but that dont make it none too great. Cooked dinner to it, so that was nice too.

ABILENE TEXAS MENTIONED!! Gorgeous overall but nothing rlly stuck out to me

Boring

Inoffensive bland country music. She’s got a nice voice but this is not for me.

Wholesome, but sometimes wholesome can be a little boring.

Too country... Yet not country enough... I can appreciate the talent, but just can't get into the music.

Like her first record a LOT more

No need to go into great depth here. I do not like the warbly voice that every now and again hits the yodel note. The compositions I feel like I have heard a million times already just with better singers and more interesting lyrics. This isn't terrible by any means, I just don't care for it. 2 stars.

She’s got a nice voice and many of the melodies are hummable, But the music is just so toothless, sugary, vanilla and totally void of any edge. I lose focus and concentration almost immediately

This was easily forgettable, why is it on here?

At first thought it was an average country album (a 1) but then it kinda grew on me so i buffed the rating. Gotta say i did not listen till the end, i can only take so much of this genre.

Musical wallpaper. You know that it's there but there's nothing to grab your attention or really make you take note it of once you acknowledge that it's there.

Det er hørby-dørby Contrey...

Virkelig meget country

1001 country albums that aren't really worth a listen since the artists all sing about the same things and 'problems' and essentially every song sounds the same in the end

Good storytelling, little too country for my taste

Could tell from the first track that this wasn't for me. Did not finish.

I'm not really a country guy - this sounds well put together and Nanci Griffith occasionally sounds like she's been checking out some Joni Mitchell. But overall not my thing.

Just not for me - country with 80's production

It's ok

album #42 the first song rocked, and her voice was beautiful. unfortunately, nanci then made the bold decision to animorph herself into a warbler bird. ꩜ album rating: ★★☆☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,047 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 25 ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 9 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 33

eh some kind of pretty but also cheesy country americana.

Should have stuck to folk

I tried. I promise. But I just can't with this country stuff.

Just barely on the pop side of country-folk music. I’d never heard of her. Probably because I do not listen to country-folk music. Someone out there would really enjoy this album, but not me.

I enjoy neither country nor western.

Nothing exceptional. 2/5

Not bad, just not for me. Although I've got some grunge next in the pipeline so I might regret rating this relatively low.

Seems like pretty boring country?

Could be good background music and if I'm in a really chill mood for reading or something. But didn't grab my attention fully.

Wanted more Joni Mitchell, she went more country

Standouts Banks of the Pontchartrain

Americana is not one of my favorite genres. Love At the Five & Dime is better than the title track. This is Emily Kinney's favorite album. There's a style of delivery for this style of music that makes everyone's voice sound put on.

I don't really like country music.

Boring. I can appreciate she has a nice voice and the music is ok but it sounds like generic country music to me. Even the album cover is boring.

Is this entire list just white people with acoustic guitars??????? Guy who wrote this had a record collection so un-eclectic it could give Swifties a run for their money. Anyway, this album, for as boring as I find this type of music, is actually not bad, for what it is. But what it is is still dull

It was fine. Not what I'm looking for though. Another lovely voice but mostly the songs just seem to be there.

I like older country but this one was a slog. I couldn’t believe the runtime was that short. Rating: 2.2

Sounds like Emmylou Harris

Pas branchée folk

Country music has very good albums, this one isn't one of those

I tried to not let my preconceptions about country effect me too much here but I don't think I did a good job. It wasn't quite a "I never want to hear this again" but I just wasn't into it.

It is nice middle of the road folk. But nothing really remarkable on for me.

Sounds like any random singer at a bar in the Redneck Riviera.

2.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/nanci-griffith/the-last-of-the-true-believers/reviews/2/ I guess I can recognize this as good in what it does. It’s just that what it does is not my thing. Some songs are quite nice (a la Waxahatchee), but too much filler and samey sounding stuff.

Dirt roads, pickup trucks, the homestead, nostalgia, good ol' country.

I guessed this would be an American country singer/songwriter from her name. Being right about that was the only pleasure I got from listening to this.

Stilprägende Stücke wie „Love At The Five And Dime“, „Goin’ Gone“ und der Titelsong „The Last Of The True Believers“ stehen exemplarisch für ihren Ansatz: Alltagsgeschichten, oft aus weiblicher Perspektive erzählt, eingebettet in akustisch geprägte Arrangements mit Country- und Folk-Elementen. Musikalisch bewegt sich das Album im Bereich Folk/Country mit Anklängen an Americana, getragen von Gitarre, Mandoline und dezenten Rhythmusgruppen. Mich überzeugt vor allem die unaufgeregte Art, mit der Griffith ihre Figuren zeichnet; das Album wirkt geschlossen und persönlich, ohne sich stilistisch aufzudrängen.

Listened to this one last week and didn't find it terribly remarkable. Just scanned back through it quickly and I don't have hte motivation to give it a relisten. If that's not telling, I don't know what is. 2 / 5

Ummm that was some country. High 2?

Not bad just not for me. Way too country and nothing really stuck out. BORING.

I didn’t warm to this at all. There’s nothing in my cultural capital that gives me an insight into any of the goings on in a country track. Ever.

Too much country in the past few weeks.....uggh

A couple of the songs were nice but too much of this country sound in the full album

some very solid songwriting but absolutely not my thing

An incursion into Country Music. Not Nanci Griffith’s best album, but it’s Ok if you are into this kind of music.

Fine female-vocal country but many of the genre that I would place higher.

Reading the reviews, I was looking forward to this as it's not a genre that really strikes a chord with me ....it remains that way

4/10 Country and Western can sound so lame. This sounds lame

more country pretty please

Gentle, clear-eyed and unimaginative songs built from acoustic guitars, light folk-country arrangements, and warm, unadorned instrumentation, with vocals delivered in a sincere, storytelling tone, move this folk album like sitting at a small-town kitchen table listening to someone lovingly recount again (and again the same) lives and ideals that are slowly fading.

I simply cannot fathom how this kind of Country music was still being made in the 1990s. We are not a serious species. An extra star for non-generic lyrics.

The singer-songwriter tradition just never does it for me melodically - too cloying. This one has some echos of Joni, just more polite and reserved, wrapped up in a bow for everyone. Incredible voice of course.

Admittedly was listening to it while working/distracted but wasn’t that into it.

Already forgotten.

cheesy folk country music, not for me

Never heard of her. Country music was a joke in sweden in the 80ies. But a nice acquaintance.

By no means bad, but nothing outstanding either. I'll admit it's not my usual genre of choice, but I'd wager there are hundreds (it not thousands) of country albums that are on a par with this one.

no more country pls

I usually like my wine singer song writer. But this one kinda missed the mark for the most part blending into background

The arrangements are pretty corny and the lyrics don't help. Top performances and production as you would expect from an 80s Nashville album but all-in-all this is forgettable.

One Of These Days

Eh. Not my style.

The style here isn't really my thing though I always try to look at positives, in that Nanci does have a good voice and seems to be a good songwriter. There were some very nice harmonies and a lot of softer moments. Overall as I said just not quite for me.

Just kind of boring, middle of the road stuff. 2/5 stars.

Another country album? Forget about the britpop, country is the real needless influx on the list. 2.5/5 because its a bit poppier

Warming

Our university cat was named Nanci after Ms Griffith. I still hated this I'm afraid, it was one of my co-tenants that was a fan. Two stars because it wasn't unremittingly awful, just far too pop-country for me.

It was okay. Still not that persuaded by country. Kind of sounds like early pop/country. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

I like Goin Gone. Is this country? It's ok. I appreciate the consistency of sound, but not diverse enough for me to fully satiate it.

Didn't hate by any means, but this album mostly just washed over my ears with its folksy country sound, something I've never been a fan of.

She's got a nice voice, and I like the music alright, but this record is painfully boring for me. I was hoping there'd be some country records to get into here, but, I guess just not this record. 2.5/5

Thoughts before listening: I see Nancy Griffith's name listed a lot as an important folk singer-songwriter from the 80s and 90s. I don't really know all that much about her, but I feel like she was a big influence on the 90s Lilith Fair-type performers. A strong female voice in a heavily male-dominated world. Review: This is okay. Definitely on the poppier side of folk music often leaning into more country music territory. There are a few songs that I enjoy but for the most part its pretty boring. Its an objectively decent album, but I'm going to give it 2-stars in the context of this list.

Not really my thing at all. Her voice sounded great and it was fine for background music. Besides that I'll probably not come back for more.

Doesn’t do too much for me. The vocals are strong and the production for it’s time is clearly brilliant, but the pace & tone of the album doesn’t land well at all with me. Feels relatively bland and lacks edge. Blending country & folk, two genres that I never usually love, was never going to be a winner with me.

Not for me.

Not my thing

This one was just too heavy on that 80s country sound for me. The production has that polished, twangy feel that defines the era, and it ends up drowning out a lot of what could have been more engaging material. There are flashes of strong songwriting and Emmylou Harris-style vibes, but the overall sound leans so hard into the glossy Nashville formula that it wore me down pretty quickly. Instead of feeling timeless, it feels locked in its decade. I can respect the talent behind it, but the slick 80s country production is something I just cannot get into. For me, it was more of a chore to sit through than an album I would ever revisit.

Not for me - 2

Oh yes chill ass country

more country. not entirely my taste but also not bad music

meh country; 2/5
