Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Is it David Bowie? Is it T-Rex? Not quite! It’s Mott The Hoople! It’s an autoplay on your 70s mix you don’t skip because you’re locked in to your work and, you know, it’s inoffensive. I would never choose to listen to this album. Also the name of the band makes me think of those early Saturday morning alien puppet shows where they came to earth to learn about stuffs and those were good so bonus points there. They were called the Havakazoo - now there’s an album I want to hear.
Strong 'we have David Bowie at home' vibes, kinda throws into relief how good he was compared to his contemporaries - this is fine, but just doesn't have that magic. Peak 70s TOTP energy, glittery streamers and feather boas and tight trousers and big hair, which is obviously no bad thing, and I can see why my mum liked it when she was a child. But yeah I can't say there's anything really that special going on here.
I don't know what I expected here, but I was still a bit disappointed. This is like bootleg glam rock that I didn't want in the first place.
Enjoyed the sounds
Bowie/Dylan wannabes and it definitely doesn't work for them.
so theres two mott the hoople albums on this list and that just pisses me off. at least on the next one i get to listen to All the Young Dudes but what the hell is this on the list for
Largely unremarkable glam rock, seemingly trying to replicate "All the Young Dudes." The opening track is the strongest (I liked the sax), but it doesn't keep up the momentum. Hunter doesn't really have the voice for "I Wish I Was Your Mother" (which may seem odd to say for a Dylan knockoff).
I wouldn’t put this on my list but hey it’s not my list
2.4 1x not bad and final track pretty cool
Didn't do much for me
Man this guy's vocals and my brain don't get along. All the Way From Memphis ★★☆☆☆ Whizz Kid ★★★☆☆ Hymn for the Dudes ★★☆☆☆ Honaloochie Boogie ★★☆☆☆ Violence ★★☆☆☆ Drivin’ Sister ★☆☆☆☆ Ballad of Mott the Hoople ★☆☆☆☆ I’m a Cadillac / El Camino Dolo Roso ★★☆☆☆ I Wish I Was Your Mother ★★☆☆☆ Rose ★★☆☆☆ Honaloochie Boogie (demo version) ★★☆☆☆ Nightmare (demo) ★☆☆☆☆ Drivin’ Sister (live, Hammersmith Odeon) ★☆☆☆☆ Average Album Rating: 1.8/5.0 ★★☆☆☆
Favorite Track: All the Way from Memphis
another acutely forgettable 70s brit rock album, but this time it's doing their best david bowie impression because for some reason bowie encouraged the band to keep producing shit. the opening track "all the way from memphis" is probably the most interesting on the album with its sax and piano which unfortunately gave me hope that this album would maybe be Something. everything else? distinctly nothing. i think it's a marvelous feat of illusion to trick the audience into thinking they're listening to music for 40-odd minutes where at no point could i focus on a particular moment that anything actually happened. pure dissociation fuel.
#821. That violin shrieking should be illegal. 2/5: stop it.
little better than expected.
You can hear why Bowie liked them and also how his example helped reshape them. And yet, for me, there are too many plodding tracks that invite a moment of critical creep (both in the encroaching and personified sense). I don't know if that's the right phrase, being one I just made up, or so says my memory, but it's like the flip side of cinema's suspension of disbelief. It's the moment where the mood is broken or no longer sustained. It's like I'm there and aware that I'm listening to the music and not moved. It's the experience of being in and then out of the flow of what they're trying to craft for me (as opposed to some idea of sustained critical distance). I almost feel it's worse to be pulled in by one song like All the Way from Memphis and then to fall out of things on Whizz Kid. This happens both at the song level on this record and within tracks that showed promise. While it's not without its shining glittery-glam rock moments — ultimately, it's Mott's unevenness and inability to sustain my interest that lets the critical creep in.
If I was a football pundit that spoke only in cliches, I would be reaching for 'bang average' after listening to this. Nothing objectively wrong, but never really piqued my interest.
Lackluster
Liked the first track, then got very old very quickly. They all sounded like poorer variations of All The Young Dudes
All the Young Dudes is great but not on this album. They dont appear the most creative band, album title wise. I see a self titled "Mott the Hoople"' a "Mott" and a "The Hoople".
If AI created a Bowie tribute band which dabbled in Dylanesque tracks, this would be the album it created.
Chippy Shop Ziggy Stardust
This wasn’t anything particularly fantastic. It’s good for what it is, but nothing that’s going to amaze anyone listening to 52 years after its release. It seemed to get better as it went on though. Violence was a stand out track for me.
If you like the music of the 70s... I do not.
Skippable
only on whizz kid but the album seems boring so far even though i feel like its something id usually like
I'm a Cadillac/El Camino Dolo Roso actually kinda rocks but it comes on the heels of seven songs that are grating, plodding, and dull. Too little, too late.
i don't want any more of these dumb british album rock bands please Would I listen again? No Deserves to be on this list? No 2.4
Classic album from a band I have never heard of. Not bad, nothing that really stood out though. 2.5 star
Subtitled: A collection of Bowie b-sides and outtakes.
The boogie and swagger tunes are on a par with Big Star's best tunes. The anthems are dirgey slogs on a par with Aerosmith's most overwrought late stage power ballads. Unfortunately the ratio of slog to kickass is like the rent- too damn high.
Pretty boring. Not the type of thing I like.
The definition of 'fine enough'
If I didn’t have 70’s rock fatigue, this would probably get a 3.
Only a few good songs. Bowie produced and you can tell.
Yeesh. Started out strong, but the rest of this fell pretty flat.
Finally, a hymn for the dudes. This thing is pretty doodoo minus some good cheesy guitar licks. I struggled to get through this one, lot of Costco brand Bowie.
Meh.
this is like rock music i can appreciate for being rock but i will never listen willingly again.
eh, not my favorite
Ended up listening to it twice, but I don't actually remember any of it but 5 hours later. Didn't dislike it but I didn't find it memorable.
Not really sure why this is on here, it's fairly unremarkable
Never listened to Mott the Hoople before. This was a bit shit, like early '70s Bowie or Elton John but watered down, a bit of Bob Dylan in the vocal delivery at times. I don't hate it but it feels pretty derivative at every turn, doesn't have the magic to be talked about in any way other than a lesser version of something else.
Just not a big glam rock guy
Glam rock: the musical
idek
Okay. Some solid rock, but no big standouts for me on this.
Very forgettable
⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 93 Mott is NOT for me! While I kept an open mind despite that glam-orous cover art, they lost me with Symphony for The Dudes 🙄 A poor man’s David Bowie, Mott The Hoople (huh?) blends glam rock swagger with harder rock / pub‑rock energy: guitars are raw, there’s attitude, and the band digs into themes of disillusionment with the rock business, which would all be admirable had they not been complete rip-off copy cats 🐈. In the pantheon of 1970s rock, Mott by Mott the Hoople holds a curious and vital position. Released in 1973, the album arrived at a pivotal moment: glam rock was in full bloom, and Mott the Hoople, newly revitalized by their David Bowie-assisted breakout All the Young Dudes, were poised to define themselves beyond the shadow of their benefactor. Mott is the result of that identity crisis — a collection of songs that are equal parts swagger and self-doubt, offering not glam rock’s glittering fantasy, but its sobering underside. 🎧 Classic Track; All The Way From Memphis 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Violence 🚫 Skip Track: Drivin’ Sister 🚫 What Were They Thinking: Hymn For The Dudes The album is extremely contrived and lacks cohesive flow; stompers, peppered with glam, with forced ballads shoehorned for self-indulgence. Tracks contain extended segments, shifts in tone that may alienate listeners who prefer straightforward rockers; folk‑rock in an arrangements that details any momentum. 🖼️ Album Artwork: Blinded by the glam 💡 While Hunter’s songwriting is passable, his vocal delivery is divisive — lacks polish or range (but paradoxically that rawness is part of what could’ve been a defining identity for this band had it not been for their overtly self-indulgent style.
The kind of 70s rock that just bounces off me like a long distnace Nerf dart.
2/5. I enjoy glam rock, and this kind of checked all the boxes but didn't really go above and beyond. Heavily inspired by Bowie and other acts at this time, I just don't feel this offers much in experience. I enjoyed a few of the songs but it wasn't hard rock, jamming, concert-going good. I think I was expecting more out of all the other glam bands I've listened to. Best Song: All The Way From Memphis, Ballad of Mott the Hoople
Bit of a slog this, in all honesty. Honaloochie Boogie, Violence, I'm a Cadillac, and I Wish I Was Your Mother aren't bad.
All the Way from Memphis
This album was so bad I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at it. So I’ll give it a 1.5 / 5 just for making me laugh.
Ok
Best Song: All the Way from Memphis. Some actual rock and roll that sadly did not show up again for the remainder of the album. Worst Song: I'm A Cadillac. Truly no reason for this song to linger and meander so long. Overall: Another week, another Bowie imitator. Everything is overly dramatic and saccharine, or its just not that interesting to even warrant your attention. Supremely skippable.
Couple of good tunes but not really for me 2/5
Que c'est nul le glam, mais que c'est nul.
first track is good, the other tracks are also there. 2
Glam rock meh
Has some moments but sounds run of the mill rock
What a slog. ugh.
Just felt very uninspired. It was lacking energy
Not nearly as terrible as I was expecting… but I am just confused.
what did david bowie see in these guys
Didn't do much for me.
Iedereen zal wel schrijven dat dit de Ali Express versie van Bowie is. Dus dat doe ik niet. Maar het lijkt er wel op, zeg. 6/10 Highlights Honaloochie
Honestly I can see why I’ve never heard of this band. It’s not bad but pretty forgettable. There were a couple of songs in the second half I liked but not enough that I can say what songs they were looking at the titles.
Did not feel special to me.
Meh... glam rock zal nooit echt m'n ding worden. Behalve Bowie dan. En laat het dan ook toevallig zijn dat ik enkel All The Young Dudes nice vind van Mott The Hoople. 2.4
Rose makes for a strong ending and I quite like the Ballad, but ultimately this piano heavy psychedelic 70s rock is very hit or miss for me, and this album is a miss
Boff
It's hard not to think of Bowie, listening to Mott, and the comparision is crushing. Putting that aside, vocals are grating, music is pompous and theatrical without irony, hotness and creativity I appreciate about glam. Some instrumantal parts are jarring (All the Way From Memohis, I'm looking at you), most are just unmemorable. Violence chorus is pretty fun, but I'm not the fan overall.
It was okay
Not my jam
Not my style at all.

I'm not sure how I feel about this album. Although its a sound I don't hate for most of it, nothing significant really sticks out. The first half of the album really wasn't my favorite with All the Way from Memphis being ruined by what sounds like a kazoo solo at the end as well as my least favorite song I've heard out of any album so far Violence. That song is so goofy. Toward the end I started to get into it with songs like Drivin' Sister and I'm a Cadillac/El Camino Dolo Roso with a more memorable sound to it. My top 3 songs from this album are I Wish I Was Your Mother, Drivin' Sister, and Ballas of Mott The Hoople.
Feels like good music, but just wasn't feeling it.
fell short
I wasn't really into this and don't want to listen to it again. Don't know what Bowie saw in them.
Went right over my head, left me underwhelmed
J - 2/5 Best Track - "All The Way From Memphis"
not my cup of tea, not really into the whole 'musical' sound
Sounds like the knock-off brand of any popular musicians from the 70s, which is actually kind of impressive. Mainly Bowie, Dylan, Young and a little Queen. This generic album cover only reinforces that impression. 2.5/5
Глупый Дэвид Боуи. Наверное в этом есть свои плюсы, но как бы... В этом списке вся дискография Дэвида Боуи, и абсолютно заслуженно, и он не глупый? Я предвзят? Лучшая песня - Ballad of Mott The Hoople.
Nothing special. Bowie wannabes that aren’t as good
“Who’s playing tonight?” “Shitty David Bowie.” “Is he any good?” “He sucks.”
A bit the same
1. I have not really looked into the background of the guy who wrote the book and created this project, but as we have gone along some of the album choices have made me strongly suspect that he is British. I think today's album is the one that made me 100% certain that is the case - only a Brit would think that Mott the Hoople's 6th album is "essential" listening. 2. When I was in college, an aunt and uncle gave me one of those compilation CD sets called "Those Rocking 70s" for Christmas. I always thought it only existed as a cash grab from the popularity of "Dazed and Confused" but I just looked it up and apparently it actually came out all the way back in 1991. Anyway, it was a great collection of songs. I unfortunately lost one of the two discs in Tallahassee, but the disc I still have includes Mott's "All the Young Dudes." 3. In my humble American opinion, if you own anything that has "All the Young Dudes" on it, then you own all of the Mott the Hoople that anyone needs to hear before they die.
First song, All the Way from Memphis, i'm realizing all these British bands have vocalists that sound the same. I might be less irritated by this song if a better vocalist was carrying it. Nevermind, a better vocalist couldn't have saved this album.
Enjoyed it. Didn't save any tho. Hymn for the dudes is my favorite.
An interesting sound. Not too bad
There were 2 pretty good songs. The rest was not good.
Perhaps.... all of the good...all of the good albums were taken... I'd say it's a cheap Bowie but I don't like Bowie either so maybe Bowie is a more affected Hoople instead? These awful analogies are falling apart. Ahh it's actually not all terrible it's just kinda there and very very of its time. i.e. if you're making a 70s glam rock mix you can use anything here with confidence, e.g. a song here or there is fine but any more is a drag. My favourite cut is actually the instrumental El Camino Dolo Roso. Sorry, Ian. 5/10 2 stars.
Another classic rock outfit in the style of the Who/Boston/etc that's as interchangeable as a pair of socks
I did listen to this. It is an album.
Bang the average
Like a low budget Bowie. Did not enjoy. 2.25/5. There's better glam rock out there.
The instrumentals were ok. Hated the voice.
Glam-rock-David-Bowie-knock-offs. I wasn't really feeling this though I did like some of the more instrumental bits.
If I was driving down the street and any of these songs came on the radio, I would change the station partway through.
Underwhelming. I fell asleep on the bus listening to this one
Pretty bland Rating: 2.3
Imagine taking David Bowie and getting rid of all of the redeeming qualities. Hackneyed english glam rock that absolutely does not need to exist.
I don't like this band not the feel of their music. I find it odd that David Bowie was a fan? What do I know?
They sound like a Bowie tribute band, which isn't the end of the world, but there's no way this gets more than two stars from me.
I’ve been on a negative streak, so I was hoping to really like this. I liked the opening track and that’s as far as I got. The “Violence” punnery with the violins in the background does not do it for me. They should’ve taken “Suffragette City” from Bowie. Competent rock music that doesn’t move me.
Meh. Not an album or style I am likely to reach for ever again. Competent, but boring.
I was hopeful this would be good, I'd settle for okay. I got neither. It just isn't very good at all. another 2
Wasnt bad, but not great Standout songs: Hymn for the Dudes I'm a Cadillac
I just cant' man
It's OK I guess. But it's the first time I've heard of them, so I don't really have any nostalgia associated with any of the songs. 2/5
Yeah, nah. All the young dudes was better. I temember liking it enough yo buy that album but in retrospect, I cant imagine why.
This, at various times, reminded me of a ton of different artists (Bowie, Costello, Dylan, Steve Miller)... but always sort of a mediocre version of them.
I recognized the first track, "All The Way From Memphis," from Classic Rock radio. It's a pretty good song. The rest of it failed to move the needle at all for me.
You can definitely hear the Bowie influence in their sound.
Not very good. I can stomach a lot of generic classic rock, but this had nothing to it IMO. No energy, no stand out tracks, no noteworthy moments. I'm a Cadillac / El Camino Dolo Roso was the only one that was of any interest to me, since it was the only track that was noticably different from the rest. This doesn't feel essential, I can think of 1001 classic rock albums better than this.
Every now and then this album made me think about David Bowie, so when it was done I went and listened to David Bowie.
Meh, didn't do too much for me. Kinda mid glam rock. There were some songs I was vibing with, but there were also some songs that really took me out of it. Standouts: All the Way from Memphis, Ballad of Mott the Hoople Rating: 2.75/5
You're making me listen to an entire Mott the Hoople album? And it doesn't even have the one Mott the Hoople song that people actually *want* to hear? ("All the Way from Memphis" was kinda cool though, actually.)
The album artwork promises Glam Rock, and Glam Rock is all you're getting. And not particularly good one at that. Bowie did it better. 2/5
Meh. I’m sure it’s very nostalgic for people from that era, but not a timeless album
Nope. Not for me
I guess I’m just not a fan of this glam stuff from this period. It just seems sort of mediocre.
Weia, gegen dieses Blech ist Slade ja pures Gold.
Sounds like the David Bowie songs I don't like. Not my style.
Nope. It's like these guys are trying -way- too hard to stand out with their vocals. The guitar work is impressive, but nothing that isn't better than other bands out there.
Discount David Bowie and a dreadful case of "valium vocals" drag this one down from what is otherwise pretty ok rock music. The guitar is great here, the songwriting less so. Truly a mixed bag. Also RIP the saxophone player they strangled on mic for "all the way from Memphis".
Generic 70's stuff, not bad but not good either
Jsp, j’ai pas trop aimé, c’était fun mais bon, après je ne l’ai pas écouté bien bien…
Cocaine really ruined the 70s, huh?
Meh
Not for me
Too boogie woogie for me
3rd rate proggishness with all the self-importance and little of the talent to back it up. Couldn’t make it through the entire album before my dog started howling, my cat left thextomm and my wife made me turn it off (“either the music goes or I do!”)
like a straight rocky horror. 2 or 3.
Fine but yeah, I got very bored
Feels old and dusty, but not in a good way
5/10 Favorite Tracks: Hymn For the Dudes, I'm a Cadillac
Sort of soft rock, early 'hair' blend of The Kinks and the least good version of Bowie. Meh. Some of the singing style reminds of Dylan but unlike Him, they can't get away with it, don't like the vocals. Probably OK for the 1001 list because of their fans, incl. Bowie, anf they had Queen as a support act! Won't put this record on, might zap away if it's on the radio.
It’s okay, just about listenable. Nothing great. If it weren’t for All The Young Dudes, would they be known at all? Perhaps I’m just ignorant here.
Puolitoista kappaletta, joita kestää kuunnella uudemman kerran. Ei jatkoon.
Yeah, no thanks. Sounds like a pub band playing ai covers of a specific Bowie era. Just made me want to go and listen to Suffragette City (which they turned down, which shows how much they know about music).
Meh. Bowie influenced 70s UK glam.
Brits singing about Memphis is always funny to me. Eh, these blokes did nothing for me. But they're not Metallica so 1.5 stars.
Not great. Slightly irritating. A poor person's Bowie.
Completely forgettable.
Forgettable, indulgent, sub-Bowie glam. A cynical cash in. Occasionally good hooks (Whizz Kids, Violence) ruined by over-production and those annoying talking/singing vocals. Drivin' Sister is about as good as it gets thanks to a simpler structure, much more restrained arrangement (although not immune from studio tricks) and a few proto-punk guitar riffs. I'm a Cadillac has some okay psych noodling. It's telling that the best two tracks are not in the style of the rest of the album. Really struggled to devote much headspace to this, looking at Allmusic it's supposed to be a wry commentary on rock and roll? Maybe some other glam rockers can transcend that self-reflexive pop thing but not these guys.
It's impossible not to hear the Bowie influence. Decent glam rock album with (in my opinion) poor pacing.
Found this super tedious. Songs drag on and don't really reach anywhere I like. Murky without great moments, sound a bit like Bowie ballads without the hooks that made those great. 2

This sounds like if Bob Dylan was a shitty 70s rock band.
Nott Tha Goodle
Boring, forgettable, and not my thing. Also I dislike their band name >:|
Opening track might have had the most boring sax solo of all time.
Well that was underwhelming. David should have kept his song to himself and let them be consigned to the scrapheap of history. Harsh but fair.
A for effort, D for execution - they clearly had some ideas they really wanted to get across, but between the singing, the bizarre instrumentation (including the squeakiest sax solo I've heard outside of a free jazz improv night), and the poor levelling throughout most of the songs it all feels like the album could have done with another couple of days in the studio, with a few more takes to get it right.
Rock from the beginning 70-ies.
Despite their Bowie connections, I’ve never been able to get into this band, and not just because of their terrible name.
The name bothered me and I wasn’t in the mood for bowie
Not much there other than its good background music. Late 70's easy rock but nothing to grab me in. No notable songs that stood out.
Meh. Too much Partridge Family and not enough Ziggy Stardust.
If you like calm, classic music then this album is for you. I only like one song from this album is all the young dudes just because of the beat and rythim. All the others songs are decent I just don't like their lyrics it's pretty weird. So if you like classic music then I would reccomend this album but the bad part about it is the lyrics.
It falls in line with a lot of classic rock already on the list. Not very interesting only a few highlights through out
A lot of different sounds on this album, but the one that unites it is not one I particularly like: 4 on the floor, 1-4-5 rock sounds with what sounds like budget david bowie at the mic. That being said, the album has some pleasant surprises that I found unique and divergent from overly generic. Cool organs. Anthemic riffs. Trippy violins. It does have a sort of bob dylan cynicism that almost sounds like a precursor to parquet courts at times. But still, it’s got lots of different moods, which I appreciated. It wasn’t til the last few songs that I had the impulse to exit the album. I read they never hit in mainstream. This album feels inspired, though, forever destined to sit under the wire. Not a hidden gem, but a hidden cool stone? Fav track: Violence (love the anthem) 1973
there's something very funny about Bowie bringing a band back from the brink of death so that they can continue on as a two-bit imitation of him
Eh... I liked the guitar solos 3/10
Unexceptional. At its start I was irritated by its aggressive nothingness, but as it goes on it settles into a more pleasant nothingness
I can't point to anything I specifically hate, and yet almost none of the tracks were appealing to me
Very little about this 70’s mediocrity piqued my curiosity
This should have been a big yes from me. It started strong, but I was ultimately left a little disappointed.
Takes four mediocre British dudes to make one Bowie pastiche, and it’s not even that good! Sounds about right
Not the worst thing I’ve ever listened to. This type of music just ain’t for me. If you’re into Billy Joel, Elton John, or any of that glammy 70s rock this will be your jam
It sounds like a generic album of it's time, they aren't as good as Billy Joel or David Bowie, they aren't original or particularly experimental. It's not great but it's not awful enough to get a 1 either. Just confused why this would be on the list. Low 2.
Shitty glam rock without the bombasticity of kiss nor any of the traits that make David Bowie good. Doesn’t even rise to New York dolls level.
I don't like glam ig
It's fine... It's 70s slightly glam plodding rock. At its best when it tries for Bowie type pomp, no surprise as he wrote their good song, and boring when it goes more traditional. I don't think I'd ever put it on deliberately.
Mostly forgettable British glam rock. It's fine, but it really doesn't do much for me.
This is an album from the 70s, that is all
Eh, okay
Mostly a boring derivative slog that answers the question "What if David Bowie couldn't sing?". Best left behind in the 70s, but credit for the interesting violin solo on Violence.
Fine for a couple of good singles but 50 years later it's hard to see why this album is recommended listening
Boring
Mott the Hoople just sound like filler tracks on an early Bowie album.
There's some pretty good moments in a couple of songs. Hymn for the Dudes has a great riff. Whizz Kid is a good song. But otherwise, I'm having a hard time finding any song that I really like, or that sounds good from beginning to end. This album is hard, because there's some good moments, some meh, and some moments that are really not good.
They were OK.
Wait, seriously?
Didn't tickle my fancy
It's got a Bowie-esque sound to it. I don't find it as catchy, though. Maybe also a bit of Dylan... but overall, doesn't really age well.
Not my jam, poppy but meh.
Really cookie cutter. Rolls us every 70s trope in one record.
I think it's telling that I've listened to a LOT of music from this era but have never heard any of the songs on this CD. With a couple exceptions, this is extremely generic, middle-of-the-fairway 70s rock. Songs like "Violence" and "Drivin' Sister" are in fact SO generic 70s (with a couple usurpations of expectations) that I thought they might've actually been making fun of the style. In turn, I now realize exactly what "Rocky Horror Picture Show" is mocking, and they're mocking Mott the Hoople. The first half of this CD is OK, although they're held back by the fact that, there's no way to put it, their lead singer sucks - he's got limited range and a crummy voice. He doesn't help his case by frequently performing in a mannered voice, like whispers or unsung plain-voice. The 2nd half, starting with "Violence", which is such a bad song that I almost couldn't finish it, just completely falls off the rails. If you just really like standard 70s rock, maybe this is for you, but it's not for me.
It´s OK. He can´t sing but they were typical of the 70´s and quite nostalgic
(Not) Queen
Was done better by bowie. This isn't be one of the best albums ever.
reminiscent of bowie in many aspects. its ok for me. not a huge fan but it wasn't a complete miss
Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Artwork: Art Deco Font Choice 😘🤌 Mix: Wo David Bowie? 🦧 Musik: unaufdringlicher, aber leider auch einfach egaler 70s Glam Rock 🤷♂️ Wertung: 💡💡/5
zzzzzzzzzz
This sounds familiar, but I've never Heard this band. It's pretty typical of the sound from that era. Which I'm this case really isn't a compliment. This will be a band I forget about the second I move to the next one.
Was OK in places, bit proggy
Oh yea this is bad
I thought I recalled this name from the 80s-90s bands, but 1974!?. I liked some songs, wash unfazed by most.
It's fine. Sounds like a lot of albums from the era. Nothing really stood out to me. I found the lead singer's voice grating.
Pretty much the only good song by Mott the Hoople was written by David Bowie, and it doesn’t appear on this album. Mott is very lackluster; at times they sound like the type of psychedelic folk that Dylan or The Byrds were making in the late 60s and at other times they sound like early glam rock like Bowie. Problem is… all of those artists had moved on by 1973 into bigger and better (or at least different) projects, and Mott sound dated even in 1973.
Won't be listening again
The guy's voice annoys me and I was looking forward to the album finishing. At some point I gave up and just stopped listening.
Not into glam rock. Most was lame but the standout is the leadoff "All the Way from Memphis" which was pretty decent.
Mott felt so very uninspired, I usually give albums a second listen to re-assess but the thought of listening to this one again has me yawning. I’m a Cadillac had a cool moment but it was too little too late. This is a case where the vocalist just didn’t click with me. Not enough glam, dime a dozen act. 2 stars
Had a few good tracks the elevated above general 70s rock but I didn't find it that interesting as a whole album.
I was very bored with this. I guess I expected more because of the hit “All the young dudes”, which I now learned was written by Bowie which explains a lot. I can tell there is some decent musicianship here in the components but I’m just not feeling it from a band/songwriting perspective.
I didn’t really enjoy this.
Mott can bring out some energy for sure, but the glamour of yesteryear is largely lost in the general genericness of it all.
Little too much hairspray on this record.
# Playlist Track - All The Way from Memphis # Notes - Album starts on a cool vibe. I like the pianos and the vibes from "All The Way from Memphis". - Unfortunately, there's not much else to like moving on. - Vocals are consistently poor, and instrumentals fail to create any interest to prop up the remaining songs. - The weird "fight scene" in Violence is just awful. -2 stars for that.
Underwhelmed by this one.
Mott the Hoople, on the brink of extinction, were revivified by David Bowie when he wrote “All the Young Dudes” for them, which remains their best song. The band then took that newfound success and channeled it into a lackluster career of second-rate Bowie impersonation. Is “Mott” a bad album? No. But it’s generally uninspired. When “Violence” started playing, I was certain I’d already heard it. Turns out they just lifted and transposed the opening riff of “Whizz Kid,” from only three tracks earlier. “Honaloochie Boogie” is my favorite of the batch, and perhaps the most musically similar to “All the Young Dudes.” As if reading my mind, Apple Music started playing “Modern Love” by David Bowie at the conclusion of the album, as if to say, “This is what you REALLY were looking for.”
Not glam enough, not edgy enough. Glad Bowie gave them their hit, but isn’t it telling that they passed on Suffragette City? Meh.
Had some good moments but ended up being a lesser version of a mediocre Bowie album.
What a hoopla of a hoople!!
Don’t really see the significance of this album. It’s fine for a 70s glam rock record but didn’t find anything special
Meh, unremarkable music
The surprises keep coming ... This website is fun
Bob Dylan was in a British funk pop band. 2/5
like not great
Sounds like Bowie outtakes
Not completely without merit. Sounds like early David Bowie, but without the class. Don't think I'll be listening to it again in a hurry but worth a low 2.
Very core to the era... feels at times like Bowie, other times like The Who and Billy Joel had a Neil Young baby.
Ei ollut erikoinen
It took me three attempts to get all the way through this one...
A perfectly good glam rock record that doesn't have the one song by this artist you want to hear.
yawn
Which came first, the Bowie chicken or the Mott egg? It's the rock 'n' rolly, shouty, Sladey, early Bowie sort of thing. Decent songs, but inconsequential. Ballad of Mott the Hoople however stands out as a good song, better than the transient glam rest. Not a bad album, but a pretty passe listen nowadays.
Bland and uninspiring. Not much new or interesting. 5
Not terrible, but didn't sound particularly impressive
Eh... makes me think of when my mum puts on a song from her youth and listens to it over and over. I guess you had to be there. Kind of blends in to other glam rock (and other genres) that I am more familiar with. If Wikipedia's only reference is that it appears on '1001...' then has it really had impact? I guess it's a long list.
Listened twice and didn't really interest me. They sound like an imitation of Bowie but the tunes weren't catchy or interesting and I'm left wondering why this was included. Pretty ordinary to me.
It was a decent, theatrical album. There were a couple of good, up-beat hits and I feel like this could be brought to life off broadway somewhere. The album feels dated, belonging in a different era, and I'm not convinced of it's placement on this list. Their infamy was large part due to David Bowie granting them the rights to All the Young Dudes. I think that's all to be said about this band.
Trist!
Mott the Meh. 2/5
This was alright but they sounded too much like a knock off Bowie.
I’ve never heard of this band before yet I feel I’ve heard everything they’ve got to offer already. Fine, not very exciting.
Too British
A band that lept into stardom from performing a song Bowie wrote, striving to ride the Glam wave through its heyday. This record isn’t horrible by any means, but it’s not good and it’s relatively unremarkable. It sounds like reading the wiki page for Glam Rock. Top tracks: All The Way From Memphis, Honaloochie Boogie, Drivin’ Sister, I’m A Cadillac
This album just didn’t do it for me. I know them from All The Young Dudes but this was not that.
"All The Way From Memphis" is cool, but not much else stands out. I don't know what kind of influence this band might have had? I'm assuming there's something else that makes this album stand out or really warrant a spot on the list outside of just the songs on a single listen through, but I'm not really loving it. I think maybe I just wanted more memorability on the record? I feel like the band gels together really well and there's definite chemistry (like the part around 2:40 in the second track where the guitar and vocalist are both "singing" lines and it's a cool back and forth) but it just feels kind of pedestrian? Even though that feels pretty harsh. To me this sound is like a bunch of GOOD musicians that aren't amazing and they have opportunities to take their music to the next level (like recording at what I assume is a really good studio based on the production quality) but no one in the band steps up and ushers the overall sound to stardom. Left wanting more.
High concept and self-referential. I do like the 70s production and appreciate the restraint in "fixing" it for the digital age. The songs are kinda dumb.
Ho letto Glam e ho sperato in molto meglio
There is already too many Bowie albums On the list, therefore we don’t need albums from cheap imitation's either.
Es una declaración de intenciones que se queda bastante corta. El principio del disco no me gustó para nada pero terminé sacando dos temitas. Es glam rock, influyeron mucho a Bowie y se nota.
Mott is the sixth album by British rock band Mott the Hoople. It is a critically acclaimed glam rock album released in the early 70's. This was a great classic rock album from the golden period of rock 'n' roll. The music is well produced, making the album fun to listen to, although I didn't find any amazing tracks on this album. It's a decent glam rock album if one is into that specific type of rock music.
Toes the line between 'rips-off' and 'is influenced by.' Maybe I wasn't paying attention enough but can't remember much about this album.
1st song.... I don't think this guy knows how to play a sax 🤣🤣 a few songs in... doesn't sound like they know how to play a violin either hahaha Vocals are very David Bowie sounding and music is just a little all over the place. Again, definitely can tell this is 70s.
Imagine if Wings, Bowie, and The Grateful Dead got together and had a baby. But the baby turned out super mid. That is essentially what this sounded like. There was also a touch of Bob Dylan in there, and that isn't meant as a compliment. Two stars rather than only one because the El Camino Dolo Roso half of "I'm a Cadillac/ El Camino..." was surprisingly decent.
Oh the "All The Young Dudes" band. Is that on here? No? Aww. I wishlist was because this is all just very forgettable. Not necessarily bad, but it just kind of played and didn't leave any real impression.
Love rock but didn't jive with this, it's ok but not so much to save any songs.
Violence is the only way you'll see sense? Why do you keep saying it like that?
On this album, Mott The Hoople asks the brave question: "What if David Bowie was a slab of processed ham?" That's the review. I got nothing. "All The Way From Memphis" was pretty good I guess.
Unconvincingly haunting the no-man's land between Dylan and Bowie.
Yeah, it sounds like Bowie would try to promote this band but I’m not getting much more than glam rock leftovers.
All The Way From Memphis // Hymn for the Dudes // Violence // Ballad of Mott the Hoople // 2.5/5
I found this album dull. It was like a mix of the Who, Bowie, and Dylan, but not particularly memorable. Not unpleasant if you're into 70's rock, but not for me.
Varauduin inhoamaan tätä ja karsastinkin huumorisävyä. Yllättäen kiinnostuin I wish I was your motherista, eli biiseissä oli ihan tarinaa. Rockimmat biisit toimivat paremmin, mut kokonaisuutena aika pliisu kuitenkin.
Your run-of-the-mill prog/hard-rock, sounds a bit like David Bowie. This one just passed me by without leave any impression.
Idk, this sounded a bit lame to me. Like they're trying real hard, but not delivering. Also, the lead singer's voice sounds shot on most of the tracks (I don't hear this as an endearing characteristic). I can't say it's a bad album, but essential? No.
This was unremarkable.
I'd heard the name and always found it amusing, and I know the hit song, "All The Young Dudes", but really didn't hear or know anything else. Nice to listen to an album of theirs for the first time. I thought I might not like it but it's got some good songs on it. Bowie-esque in some ways. It gets a little over-the-top for me, but I think they kind of meant that. Definitely skilled musicians, I can really hear that.
A perfectly serviceable glam rock album, with shades of the Stones and Bowie. Nothing memorable. Favorite track: "Hymn For the Dudes"
Basic middle-of-the-road “hard rock”. Nothing special here.
A mediocre blend of Dylan and Bowie.
Top 1001? Really? It's absolutely "fine" generic 70s rock.
I've listened to this album 4 times now and every time I completely forget what this album sounded like. The only descriptor I can provide is Bowie-adjacent, and I'm not a huge Bowie fan.
C- All the Way From Memphis - 2 Whizz Kid - 3 Hymn for the Dudes - 2 Honaloochie Boogie - 3 Violence - 2 Drivin’ Sister - 2 Ballad of Mott the Hoople - 2 I’m a Cadillac / El Camino Dolo Roso - 1, there’s 5 min left and I’m already bored I Wish I Was Your Mother - 2 If you told me this was David Bowie, I’d believe you. However, that doesn't mean it was good. It was extremely boring, which seems ironic because how could something be extreme and boring at the same time. Well, I'll tell you: a group of guys made a band and wanted to sound like David Bowie. The only problem? They aren't David Bowie. It's like if someone restored the body of a vintage Mustang, but put a Prius engine under the hood. They don't the It factor that Bowie does. They aren't weird or flashy enough.
I know the band's name but never knew any songs they did or if I liked them. Thanks to 1001 I now know some of their songs and know that I don't like them.
This doesn't have All the young dudes, but All the way to Memphis is a decent song. The glam rock sound didn't have much lasting power and Ian Hunter's voice gets tiresome after awhile though, it gives me Bob Dylan-esque heebeegeebies. The only song that really I enjoyed was El Camino Dolo Roso, which is instrumental so there you go.
Just sounds like they took the only bad aspects of Bowie and amplified them to the max.
Glam rock sholck. Totally unmemorable. 1.5/5
Less than mid. It's the worst halves of Bowie and The Eagles put together in a hybrid we don't need in 2023
Glimpses of something better - threatened to be an undiscovered gem but never fully materialised 2
I am writing this in a bad mood. Does it show? An obscure album name, which almost helped piss me off before I even listened to it... So expectations low. Piano is opening track sounds out of tune, music sounds like flat boring air guitar stuff. The track title "Hym for the dudes" is meh. Got at far as the title BALLAD, and yeah I don't get this kind of 70s rock.
Very weird like David Bowie and bob dylan had a baby that I hated.
Often reminiscent of artists I like e.g. Bowie and mark bolan of T. rex but without any of the edge, catchiness or songwriting that make those groups stand out. Some decent if not completely forgettable moments but mostly I did not enjoy listening to this album. ridiculous band name.
niet speciaal
Zo een rock albums hebben we toch al vaker gehoord denk ik?
Meh. Didn't care for it and barely remember it. I like the album cover though.
A product of its time. 2/5
Boring. 2 stars.
It’s all right I suppose. Feels a bit dated.
Poor people’s Bowie
les rolling stones de walmart un peu ?
Ishhh
Didn't hate this one.
Not for me even with the hints of a david Bowie impersonator thru out the album
Typical 70s rock if you're into that kind of thing. I had only heard of their band name because it's weird, but never heard their music before. I immediately picked up on the Bowie influence. I like Bowie, but I'd rather just listen to his music than this. It's a bit boring and not really catchy, especially the first half of the album. The second half was definitely better, and I prefer the tracks that sound more blues-y. A lot of the songs just go on longer than they need to, and overall it just sounds meh to me. Also the first track has a really annoying squeaking sound at the end.
