Super fun album, definitely ahead of the curve
About the cover of Just Like Heaven by The Cure: THIS IS HOW COVERS SHOULD BE DONE. It is building off of the original by adding new elements, instead of being a simple copy. For example, there is the guitar wobble on the main riff, and the yelling of "YOU!". Also, the abrupt cut off after the first "YOU!" at the end of the song. Unique! I like that! I really love bands who excell at doing great covers that build on the original. For example, Siouxsie and the Banshees. Their Dear Prudence with the layered vocals saying "Deeeaarrr Prudenceee" is top tier. Also, their cover of Helter Skelter is very neat in how it starts off slow instead of fast live the original Edit Apr 22 2026: 5 --> 4
Weird, but I liked it
Late bloomer on the Dinosaur Jr. experience and I really enjoy this album. Proto-grunge, Lo-Fi garage rock.
Actually, this was awesome
Interesting sound. There are a few screeching noises that I didn't appreciate, but all in all good album.
Interesting
If I were rating this album by its prosuction and overall sound, it would be a 1.5/5. What a bad sounding album. However... The songwriting is great and I simply love it when punk/post-punk albums have simplistic, but brilliant guitar parts. The singing is bad, but that's a genre staple and it mostly works in this context. Overall, I didn't think I would enjoy this album when I started, because it really is a bad sounding album, but in the end, I actually enjoyed it very much. 4/5
Noisy and beautiful. J. Mascis is creates such a balance between the two. I have the Just Like Heaven single from this album but I never knew it was the last track on the album. Beginning to End fantastic in a messy, muddy way that grips you somewhere deep in your chest and tickles your ears with a scratchy, aching voice that you can't get enough of.
fantastic rock album with real heart.
I love all the early Dino Jr. stuff right up to Where You Been, and have been listening to these dudes since Deep Wound *probably not on this list :( These records are key components to the soundtrack of my youth. You're Living All Over Me has all the signature elements of those albums. It is scratchy, raw, and frantic, and noisy. The composition is sometimes scattered, probably the musical equivalent to the shit heaps of paper on my desk which compromises my "filing system", and all make sense to me. The whole thing is topped with an emotive vocal melancholy which is kind of the magic ingredient. These are perfectly imperfect recordings with enough fuzz to cover up the blemishes. Four stars as Bug and Green Mind are next level.
Hey, that album is insanely good and sounds way before it's time. A memorable noisy and energetic experience that doesn't give up on letting the listener enjoy a more melodic and, somehow, pop aspect.
Gutes Album
This album really concentrates that 90’s apathetic alt rock sound that has become somewhat defining of the decade, which is all the more impressive when you release this was released in 1987. I’ve never really given Dinosaur Jr much of my attention, but maybe it’s about time I did because this was right up my alley. The bonus cover of Just Like Heaven was fantastic too.
After two listens, this album is pretty rockin! Feels so grungy and raw for its time and I really enjoyed jamming out and doing a little head banging to it today.
Promising. Reminds me a lot of Nirvana. Sort of a missing piece between Sonic Youth and them. More tuneful than Sonic Youth, less aggressive than Nirvana. Nice. Would definitely listen again.
Post punk, rock, hardcore. Very ahead of it's time! Got a QOTSA feel in places Also reminds me of early Blink 182 with more melodic elements Production is great Although it's very interesting, not many standout songs And a Cure cover, showing influences Ooh that distorted tone on Just Like Heaven reminds me of early Slipknot (MFKR) tone. Bit OTT and clippy Best track - Sludgefeast or Little Fury Things 4 stars
That was surprisingly cool
I have to admit that I didn't know this album or this band, but growing up in Denmark in the early 90s the sound is very familiar.
Lots of noise. Lots of dissonance. But I kind of dug it. Very influential on the grunge scene that would explode a few years later.
This album fuckin shredded - they even covered the cure lol - it’s weird because these came out months apart from each other
The noisey-ness might not be some people’s cup of tea but it totally works for me. The rough and fuzzy Guitar with the driving rhythm section let me lock and coast through each jam. Happy to hear this one again (3.5/5)
You're Living All Over Me is the second album from Massachusetts based band Dinosaur Jr. The band made punk based alt rock, which one reviewer has called "the missing link between Husker Du and REM." This album has come to be regarded as one of the most influential alt-rock albums recorded. These songs are based in the lo-fi, driven guitars of punk, with paced rhythms to match. The band added lyrics filled with self-aware introspection, which became defining elements of a few alt-rock genres in the 90s and the aughts.
On one hand, a very interesting album. On the other, surprisingly forgettable? I'll probably have to sit more with it.
Awful voice great album
Really liked this which was a surprise. Simpsons: No
Wall-of-noise type stuff is generally not my go to, but this hit my mood this morning. Not amazing, it I could see listening to this again. Maybe not in its entirety, but Dinosaur Jr in general.
Simply great
I briefly listened to them back in high school when we were trying to sound like these guys, but I didn't listen to the whole thing. Probably only the Just Like Heaven cover most of the time. This is an amaziong project. The recording quality ofc is ass, but I don't think it would hit the same if it was mastered perfectly. A really cool no-miss project that I think is a really unique one. I don't think I'm gonna give it a 5 just because of the mixing and sound inconsistency, but I love this one. Finally a great album like this.
This is good. Would probably hit harder if I was 16
Overall: 8/10 I knew it was possible to get two albums in a row by the same artist but it still caught me off guard lol I have a lot of the same opinions on this album that I do with Bug. The guitar work is awesome and interesting and if you don't enjoy J. Mascis as a vocalist then you might want to avoid this one. I like it slightly more than Bug, but I also think it's less accesible, especially with the wall of distortion that starts the album. Lou Barlow also does some lead vocals on this one. Great album if you're into the noisy side of rock. Fav Song: Raisans Least Fav Song: Poledo
Wow. I really wasn't expecting to like this at all. The first part of track 1 really made me sweat, like all my preconceived ideas were at the fore. Then it just got better and better - there were a couple of low spots, but they were tiny in comparison to the high spots. The guitar solos were fucking incredible. It's 4 stars from me.
It's taken me some time to really get into Dinosaur Jr. They sound like the kind of proto-grunge band that would have opened for Sonic Youth in the late 80s, which is pretty much what happened. They don't sound quite as developed as Sonic Youth, but it's impossible to ignore the comparison. I will say that "You're Living All Over Me" is better than "Bug", in my opinion. There's great energy here, and some beautiful lofi compositions, particularly "Poledo", which closes the album in a really unique way. It's far less polished than their contemporaries, but I think after a couple of relistens, I am beginning to feel like a Dinosaur Jr fan after all.
I've seen Dinosaur Jr. cited as a source of influence on indie rock often, and now I truly understand why. This is from 1987?? That's incredible. This rocks. I love the transition from Kracked to Sludgefeast, the latter of which is my favorite track at the moment. I also appreciate the more experimental outlier, Poledo. The version on Spotify has the Just Like Heaven cover which was a funny jump scare. Very cool.
honestly i'm really fuckin with this album a little bit. this is a CRUSTY alternative rock album, shattering and crispy instruments but with awesomely written songs overall. it doesn't care if you think it's pretty. this is another album on the list that while fuzzy and sloppy in sound, it's a refreshing standout compared to all the other albums. kurt cobain was a fan, and i can hear why. the only thing i'm not used to yet is the vocals, which are often mumbly and hard to understand. pure. audio. sludgefest.
Great album. Not a fan of the cure cover surprisingly
Couple cool songs, decent sound
Less-toxic grunge. Gentler Nirvana with shades of Thingy, some 60s psychedelic garage. Parts sounded like Peace of Mind. Worthy listen.
I'm very fond of them...they remind me of a specific set of people at a specific time in my history that I'm most nostalgic about. I hadn't listened to this album straight through before...I'm more familiar with Bug....but I loved it. Favorite tracks: Little Fury Things, Raisans, and their cover of Just Like Heaven, which I already had on a couple of playlists.
vier minus
It’s been a lifetime since last heard this, personally think this is where Mascis et al got the balance between the noise and melody just right. A shambolic noise created by being technically able, allowing the melody to shine. Without this influence Nirvana don’t sound like they did. 4 Star
nice, really rough around the edges album. i'm shocked this album is from the late 80s because it sounds so ahead of its time. this album came out the same year as appetite for destruction! crazy. anyways, you get with dinosaur jr some awesome fuzzy guitar and quintessential slacker vocals from j mascis. the songs are fierce but lo-fi in a fun way. could have done without the 5 minute musique-concrete song, but other than that, i enjoyed this one!
Rating: 8.5/10 The noisiness works so well. So many fantastic melodies and riffs throughout. The first half is especially strong.
Poledo gave me whiplash and made me want to give it a second listen. This feels like the best result for something that most people wouldn't make or like. I'm torn on a strong three or weak four but I appreciate that this is on the list. It's a good example of where music can go and isn't just focused on what's easy listening.
I was skeptical, but by Sludgefeast I started to get into it. Amazing musicianship. Great melodies. A little meandering at times. But it works. The voice of J Mascis melodically just does something that clicks with this sound.
Dinosaur Jr have always been a bit of a blind spot despite their connection and genre similarities to other bands I love. I thought this was a pretty cool record. Good, fun noise. I liked it.
It’s like listening to the birth of shoegaze
Grunge before grunge was a thing. Lots of influence here passed on to later bands. Great album, must listen if you value grunge or alt. rock of any sort in the 90's. 3.5/5 = 4 on this scale.
I wonder how many people started making music with the sole intent of sounding like these guys.
Oh, a second Dinosaur Jr record in a week! I think I preferred this to Bug. At times, this album reminds me a little of early Cure. Not bad, but is it really a great album. On my list for future listening for sure.
4 - really enjoyed it. Only knock is sometimes the production gets way too muddy
seems pretty sick for 1987, a good listen
Dinosaur jr from their classic lineup era. This one still has the raw and loose charm of their self titled first album, but with slightly better recording. I still prefer the debut album for some reason. This one IS all killer and no filler though.
so this isn’t the guy from broken social scene? and you’re sure about that?
I think it's cool! I really like noisy slacker rock type shit and this is the inception of it all. It is a bit penisy at times but I think it's because they didn't have Vtubers easily accessible. Imagine if J Mascis was a vtuber. Someone should show him Vtubers. He would fuck it up on hololive so much they would fucking banish him to indie world where he'd become the best person there. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- The people making this type of music now probs need to jack off and smoke weed. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1233219643645100144/1342590033328082944/image.png?ex=67ba2fe8&is=67b8de68&hm=8e49272162521a453901bcf2c02873dd7a1abaaceccbeaf7d7074da53e8425d2&
Slaps.
9/10 Alongside Surfer Rosa, You're Living All Over Me is a pretty defining album for Indie Rock in the 80s, while also being a complete knock off of Sonic Youth, Sabbath, and Neil Young. This time however, instead filling the role of angst and quirkiness, Dinosaur Jr. created what the cool kids like to call “Slacker Rock”, (aka Lo-Fi (aka Lo-Fi Indie Rock (aka music that sounds bad))). Taking the piercing texture and dissonance of Noise Rock, the feverish aggression, rhythms, and energy of Post-Hardcore, and the Punky-Metally fusions that resemble early Grunge, we have an Indie album that is defined by DIY, it’s defined by its limitations and rawness. It’s this ambition and handcrafted quality is what made the band so appealing to Indie and Alternative Rock as a genre, literally inspiring Sonic Youth to release Daydream Nation the next year, which is extremely funny to inspire the band you ripped off. It’s got so much heart and grit to it, makes sense why DJ is the only band to to touch the heart of a hard ass like Henry Rollins so easily, I do too wanna cry like a bitch to Little Furry Things. WAITER HEY WAITER HEY WAITER HEY WAITER THERE’S NOISE IN MY ROCK *vomits*
Yeah I like this quite a bit! It's a good vibe, doesn't totally entrance me but I like the noise and the voice combo! Like a 3.5 but I'll lean 4 bc it's pleasant listening
another band that I know is good but hasnt totally connected with me! this album is really fun tho!!
out of all of the albums, this one has the closest sound to what i usually listen to. would probably need to listen again for the lyrics, but the instrumentals are exactly my kind of thing!!
I've previous dissed this band and marked them down but this hit me in the right way this morning. I really enjoyed the whole album. I like the variety and vibe.
Robert Smith loved the Just Like Heaven cover.
4/5
Must remember this one for when I'm thinking Sonic Youth but want something a little different.
Very early grunge sound
Belle p'tite trouvaille, c'Est vrm pas pire
Please select one joke review for your convenience: 1) “Notes, what are those?” - J Mascis' vocal chords, probably. 2) Cool that Dinosaur Jr. went to the Stephen King school of writing fulfilling endings to books and songs! 3) I don't know what 'Poledo' is, but I do not care for it.
The 90’s would have sounded vastly different if not for the blistering noise of 80’s Dinosaur Jr. Also, what the fuck is “Poledo”?
Unique sound for its time. Influential.
Interesting.
Album gets better as you move through it fuzzy yet controlled.
Ugh. I don't want to type this all over. Dino jr best and und r rated. Bug good
I underestimated these guys in real time; this is a solid album. A couple of the later tracks, especially "Poledo," almost lost a star, but there's a lot to commend here. Way ahead of its (techno-beat) time.
Was only familiar with “Feel the Pain” so this album was much harder and grittier than expected, overall was a pleasant surprise.
These dudes rock.
Here's a band that I've always known about but never listened to. This album is pretty cool. The guitars are great and loud. You can definitely hear see their influence all across the popular rock music of the 90s, especially grunge. I wish this album had stronger vocals, which would have made it nearly perfect. 4/5
I’ve flirted with Dinosaur since probably the 8th grade but never became obsessed because their stuff was a bit too rough around the edges for me. But this and Bug are two of their albums that always work for me. The Lung is the standout here, but Sludegefeast, In a Jar, and Raisans are other highlights. It’s a tight rope act balancing catchy, clean hooks and sloppy noise. Mascis being one of the scene’s best guitarists doesn’t hurt either. Just shy of a 5.
Original alternative rock like the Replacements and Husker Du. Some of it rocks pretty hard.
yeum….. highlights: little fury things, the lung, raisans, just like heaven (nov 28 2023)
One of the best sludge rock albums ever
A little bit samey but I liked it a lot. Their sound was pretty ahead of the curve on what would become popular in the 90s.
Beautiful noise and vocal fry
Only dinosaur jr song I had heard before this was Feel the Pain so I was expecting this album to be a lot more bleak than it was. Instead it reminded me a lot of smashing pumpkins. Still bleak but enough energy to rock out to.
I dig this. Hard to believe this is from 1987. Pretty good all of the way through; funny how it goes full Event Horizon partway through Poledo. The bonus track Cure cover was a treat to, it did not go how I thought it would, lol. Yeah, all in all, real good, I already want to listen to it again.
The more I listen to this album, the more I like it. It used to be a 3, then a 3.5. I think it's a solid 4 now. 4/5
I owe Jay Masics an apology for not listening to this earlier. This is essential Alt Rock. I was surprised to see it's back from 1987 as their second album, but it was all worth it to get here. It's fun, it's driven, it's a great listen with a lot of weight
Stonker of an album
All in all, a formidable example of 80s indie rock including an amazing cover of “Just Like Heaven.” https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-youre-living-all-over?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
Perfect piece of noise
Face melted off.
3.7 2x
Really really exciting stuff, initially. First 5 tracks are absolute beasts. It then tails off quite a bit which is a shame. But that first 20-25 minutes gives it 4* alone. Can hear where bands took that formula and expanded up on it (Sonic Youth, Pixies, Nirvana). An important release that I've never heard referenced before, a rarity. More of this please.
A lot of loud guitars. Another great predecessor of grunge
Lo-fi massive shoe gaze-y guitar gods.
Now this carries an emotional attachment. There's something magic about an album that can make you feel quite specific nostalgia, despite the fact you're not sure if you've ever heard it before. I loved this very much, and I reckon in the future I'll up this into the fives.
Good. Without a Sound is better I think.
Abrasive and unpredictable. This records suffers a little in the back but is an awesome sonic journey. I've known about this band for ages but have never given them a listen. I liked this a lot. I sampled some other Dinosaur Jr. tracks and I really like their later stuff.
Solid throughout Standout songs: Sludgefest In a Jar Poledo Just like Heaven
Can totally hear why these guys were such an influence on so many of the alt/grunge bands of the 90s.
Endergetic and interesting. Not a lot of standout tracks but did leave me wanting more. on the 4 side of 3.5.
I appreciate noisy scratchy rock music, and this is some nice grungey stuff. It is probably objectively bad but I really like the vocals always on Dinosaur Jr. Good band, good album.
Great
This album is heavy, fun, yet full of edge. Loving what's happening here and the guitar-work is on point as expected. The vocals have a bit of a pre-grunge slacker-core thing going on and it honestly just takes me back to listening to Meat Puppets, early Flaming Lips, and other bands of the era. Don't know much about the Dinosaur Jr. but I think they're a real nice time. Wish I would have heard this album earlier in my life, it's style of rock is right up my alley.
More Sebadoh than Sonic Youth, I dig it.
Lame review. Not a lame album.
i just got into Dinosaur Jr this year! love their stuff
love the cover art. good whammy.
Definitely ahead of its time. Some good rock and some weird stuff I’m not that into.
Great band. Very good album. There were a few bits where I wasn't totally vibing with it, but then it ended with Just Like Heaven cover that I love love love. I'm giving it a second listen today, but for now, it's sitting at a happy 4.
it’s gas as hell bro
Amazing music for working at a shop on a rainy spring day.
I think so much about this. The too long won’t write version is that it is really good. But it has issues. 3.5. And 25
Good album throughout, excellent guitar
This alternative rock album definitely sounded ahead of its time, with more of a 90s sound so obviously must have been influential on other groups. I really liked it, although I did find the distortion a bit too much as the album went on and tired of it. I suspect this is an album I would like more the more I listened to it, so I gave it a 4. Fave Track: Little Fury Things Rating: 4
Grunge starts here.
First listen Saved 7/10 Top track: In A Jar
Can definitely hear how it influenced so many artists that came after.
I didn't think I knew any Dinosaur Jr. songs until about 5 seconds into the first song. I knew "Feel the Pain" and "Start Choppin" but I didn't know the name of either of those songs - just heard them on the radio loads. Anyway, these guys have a very distinctive sound, just grimey enough
HOT FUZZZZZ
Amazing music and early grunge style.
I had actually forgotten how much I liked their early ‘90’s stuff. I really didn’t realize that they were around in the ‘80’s. They are much more foundational to the grunge scene than I knew. Thanks, Timmy C!
Pas surprise d'y entendre une reprise de Just Like Heaven de The Cure, je vois les parentés dans l'esprit désabusé, la guitare parfois fougueuse, parfois traînante. Belle inventivité dans les textures et les environnements.
I was into this album back in the 90s. The secret is that Dinosaur Jr. write really solid pop songs disguised under layers of grungy guitars and J's super laidback vocals. Juliana Hatfield always said she wanted to cover the entire album and I've always thought that would be thee best way to uncover the pop. But maybe it's better to remain buried under all that sludge.
It was very ahead of its time!
I had previously heard of the artist but was not really familiar with their music. I really enjoyed this. It's rock but I would almost call it proto-grunge. A lot of 90s bands point to Dinosaur Jr. as an influence and I can definitely hear it on this album. I enjoyed pretty much the entire album but my favorite track is probably also the weirdest - Poledo, which is almost like Revolution 9 meets the AM radio beginning of Wish You Were Here. Will definitely listen to this album again.
Solid album. Better then a lot of other slacker rock. They sound great live too.
4/5
Better than expected, his singing voice is not my cup of tea, i get the appeal though. But what makes this album is the distorted guitars and drums.
I'm impressed that this cam out in the late 80s and sounds so much like early-mid 90s grunge and even some late 90s alt-rock. I had never heard this before, but it gives the impression that a lot of people in Seattle heard it during their formative years. I liked the album. I'm giving it a bump for being (more than likely) an influential force on the 90s.
Great noise rock album, has grown on me a lot. 4/5
Was served entrees of silly hard rock like Anthrax and then okay, but not really interesting albums by Sheryl Crow, Run DMC, Joni Mitchell, and today it is time for the main meal: Dinosaur JR. Yes, USA does have bands that make you feel alive, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers and.... Dinosaur Jr. Like the painful way of singing, the thrilling rhythms, the grungy noise.
**Lyrics:** The lyrics on "You're Living All Over Me" are introspective and often cryptic, delivered with a sense of detachment that adds to the album's overall atmosphere. Themes of alienation, longing, and disillusionment permeate tracks like "Little Fury Things" and "In a Jar." J Mascis' understated vocal delivery allows the listener to project their own emotions onto the songs, creating a sense of universality in the themes explored. **Music:** The music on this album is characterized by its swirling layers of distorted guitars, propelled by Lou Barlow's melodic basslines and Murph's tight drumming. J Mascis' guitar work is particularly noteworthy, with his signature blend of fuzzy, feedback-laden riffs and soaring solos. Tracks like "The Lung" and "Kracked" showcase the band's ability to seamlessly blend elements of punk, noise rock, and psychedelia into a cohesive sonic assault. **Production:** Produced by Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, "You're Living All Over Me" has a raw and unpolished sound that perfectly complements the band's aesthetic. The mix is dense and immersive, with the guitars pushed to the forefront, creating a wall of noise that envelops the listener. While some may find the lo-fi production charming, others may find it abrasive or inaccessible. **Themes:** The album explores themes of disillusionment, longing, and existential angst, reflecting the alienation felt by many young people coming of age in the late '80s. Songs like "Raisans" and "Poledo" delve into feelings of isolation and disconnect, while tracks like "Sludgefeast" and "Tarpit" channel a sense of frustration and aggression. Despite the darkness of the subject matter, there's also a sense of catharsis in the music, as if the act of creating and performing these songs is a form of therapy for the band. **Influence:** "You're Living All Over Me" has had a significant influence on the alternative rock genre, inspiring countless bands with its blend of noise, melody, and emotion. Its impact can be heard in the work of bands like Sonic Youth, Pavement, and Nirvana, who would go on to bring alternative rock to the mainstream in the early '90s. The album's legacy continues to resonate today, with its noisy, introspective sound serving as a touchstone for a new generation of musicians. **Pros:** 1. Raw energy: The album crackles with an infectious energy that grabs the listener from the opening chords and doesn't let go until the final notes fade away. 2. Emotional depth: Despite its abrasive sound, "You're Living All Over Me" is imbued with a sense of emotional vulnerability that makes it resonate on a deeper level. 3. Guitar work: J Mascis' guitar playing is nothing short of masterful, combining technical prowess with raw emotion to create some of the most memorable riffs and solos in alternative rock history. **Cons:** 1. Production: While some listeners may appreciate the lo-fi production aesthetic, others may find it off-putting or inaccessible. 2. Lack of variety: The album's relentless barrage of fuzzy guitars and pounding drums can feel monotonous at times, with few moments of respite or variation in tempo. 3. Cryptic lyrics: While the album's lyrics are evocative and poetic, they can also be frustratingly cryptic, leaving the listener to decipher their meaning on their own. In conclusion, "You're Living All Over Me" is a seminal album that has left an indelible mark on the alternative rock landscape. Its blend of fuzzy guitars, introspective lyrics, and raw energy continues to resonate with listeners decades after its release. While its lo-fi production and cryptic lyrics may not be to everyone's taste, there's no denying the emotional depth and musical innovation on display. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to the world of alternative rock, this album is essential listening.
Good stuff.
i love dinosaur jr
Cool
grunge precursor
not my utter fave dinosaur jr album to be honest but i do think it's fun. a lot of good intros that turn into songs that sound the same by the end and it would be 3 stars if not for poledo.
An album I’ve been meaning to listen to that I’m glad I finally got to! Supposedly very influential in the alternative and grunge scene and I can hear its later influencers throughout the album. Love the use of distortion and the voice to match which reminds me of mark kozelek. So chaotic yet soothing.
Dang this rocks. Less ear wormy than some other Dinosaur Jr, but I can’t complain about a record that shows off Mascis as a guitar guy, which this one does.
Banger tracks. I had not much high hopes when I heard the first track with too much distortion, but, it was just clearing my ears for the music later.
Mycket ljud. Men ändå melodiskt. På gränsen till en fyra. Men efter 2-3 lyssningar tycker jag nog ändå att det lossnade.
Stökigt men ändå rätt bra, bortsett från sången som drar ned. Svag fyra.
4.3 - Mascis is a godfather and architect of the 90s alternative guitar sounds that I loved so much as a teenager and it’s amazing to hear this 1987 record that lays that foundation.
Top shelf 90s rock. Great melodies, playing and overall just very enjoyable. Very close to a 5
Dehä e no classic banger men ja gillar int sludgefeast eller tarpit!
I would never have guessed this album was from the 80’s. It felt very modern. Really enjoyed this.
Crazy that this is an 80s album. Sounds super ahead of its time. People always talk about how Dinosaur Jr. influenced the next wave of alt rock and grunge, but I think it goes a bit further than that. Emo bands basically stole this whole sound. Especially some of the more math rock-inspired emo bands that would come later like American Football and Mineral. Even the vocal delivery is similar. Anyways, this record is super cool. The only thing is that I wish it was produced better, but I suppose that adds to the charm.
I really liked about half of this album. And it's pretty obvious that this was a massive influence on most, if not all, of the alt rock (grunge) of the early 90s. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pavement - they're all in here. This album generally sounds really great: lots of distortion but great melody and some killer riffs. Really loved the cover of The Cure.
I had no idea Dinosaur Jr has been around this long! I do like some of their newer stuff, so I'm excited to listen to their second album. Some really good pop-punk/alt/rock here. Kracked is a great song with some really interesting sonic choices. Sludgefeast is a really catchy song as well. There are a few moments on the album that drag or don't click with me initially, but this is definitely an album I'll return to. 4/5
Dinosaur Jr. is one of my favorite bands. I don't love J Mascis's voice, but they rock hard enough that it doesn't matter. The two Barlow songs at the end stick out, but the rest of the album is so good it doesn't matter.
Sludgefest, The Lung, Tarpit, Just Like Heaven all good. Love this. Solid grungy The Pillows/Guitar Vader vibes.
Fantastic. Heavy, but fun pop noise rock. Still limp wristed and ineffectual as was a lot of music from this age, but really great. I think I appreciate it more now as a middle aged human than I did back then
I really enjoyed rocking out to this whilst driving. Lots of driving, shrieking guitars and terrible (yet fitting) vocals. 3.5 stars
First listen I wasn't a fan of the vocals, but it grew on me on the second listen. J Mascis just put out a really great solo album called "What Do We Do Now?" that I fell in love with. All's to say, hadn't previously been a Dinosaur Jr. fan, but might be becoming one. 4/5!
Damn, okay. Our second from Dinosaur Jr., and it's a marked improvement for me. Just like the first time around, a very grunge-y, DIY rock sound, but somehow with these really great melodies that just barely float over the mix. There's obvious musicianship here, excellent guitar work, but in combination with the drums and bass it all creates a sort of garage-punk "wall of sound," shout out to Phil Spector. Not sure if it's the mixing or mastering that creates that effect, but it's really cool. It's like witnessing a caveman create fire, some flash of brilliance and beauty surrounded by noise. The vocals aren't spectacular, but they don't need to be. Then there's the left-field noisy odyssey "Poledo," a great way to close out the album. And I know it's not technically a part of the album, but a cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" as a bonus track is really cool, I have to keep that in here because I realize that Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me isn't on this list for some odd reason. Anyway, yeah, excellent album. Not sure how many others they have like this, but I'm definitely a fan of this, it works really well. Favorite tracks: Kracked, The Lung, Raisans, Tarpit, Poledo, Just Like Heaven. Album art: Really cool sketch of what, maybe two men joined at the head. Conjoined twins? No idea. But the art style is perfectly fitting, as DIY and frankly bare and elemental as the music. Text is great too. 4.5/5
Tight fuzzt rock. Not many solos? Raisan tight. Cure cover tight. Poledo long and annoying
Such a powerful album! A bit noisy yet also some dreamy moments. When they rock, they bring the rock! Standout tracks: Little Fury Things, Kracked, SludgeFeast, Tarpit, In A Jar, Lose 8,5 out of 10
Precursor do grunge? Sensa, vou ver outras músicas deles dps
A good example of what the regular rock lacks. Imo they went a bit too hard on randomness, sometimes it added to the songs, many times it didn't Poledo made me think "damn this was great I want to listen to the whole album again". Twice. It's simply that great
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Raisans
I enjoyed this album a lot, some parts were experimental, and I think it paid off.
Really great
Released in 1987. The peak of hair metal and power ballads. This album is the antithesis to what was happening in mainstream music back then. Yet at the same time it's musically very masterful. The one thing I don't like about this album is the weird fade outs at the end of songs. That's a minor nit pick though.
Awesome and underrated, great album
I like it
who doesn’t love a little J mascis on a Tuesday morning
Wow! I did not know I'm a Dinosaur Jr. fan. On the surface, it seems like the band might be too loud and din-fueled for my taste. But oh no...time & place: as I walked my dog at dusk on a brisk night listening to this album I felt like it was the perfect soundtrack to the movie that's my life. It hit hard and right on!
I liked it! I enjoyed the bit where they just yelled for a bit
In some songs I was really surprised by how progressive they were for 1987 - like there are aspects of little furry things that are considered experimental by today's tastes. A lot of the rest sounds like 90s indie rock which i guess they were a precursor to. Appreciate the novelty but did not enjoy listening to all the songs.
I enjoyed this album alot. I thought I wouldn't at first because it was a more noise rock oriented band but it was great. Instrumentation is great and the guitars absolutely ripped in alot of these tracks. This shocked me that this was recorded in 87.
This is the best Dinosaur Jr album I have ever heard. I have listened to some of their other albums, given that I’m a fan of a lot of similar indie noise rock groups (Pixies, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana). It’s surprising I haven’t spent more time with Dinosaur Jr. This album hits the brief of being abrasive and noisy raw emotion but with catchy melodies. Great album that fits the mould of a 4 star album that will make my frequent rotation list.
Can’t knock grunge or indie
Very high 4, but a few skips. Definitely need to revisit more.
This albums feels way ahead of its time i could easily see this being a modern release, the run of the first 4 songs is really good
Was an all time favorite in high school. Still holds up today.
Brilliant album. Noisy, raw-edged and occasionally blistering with a welcome melodic side, several years ahead of the grunge curve. Much smarter musically than you might expect. Fave Songs: In a Jar, SludgeFeast, Raisans, Tarpit, The Lung, Lose
Fuck yeah. Classic.
4.5
Kan godt forestille mig teenager Kurt Cobain gå amok over den her
Fedt! Med min viden nu, så er der nok hentet inspiration herfra til både kashmir mbv (hvis ikke sidstnævnte er den anden vej rundt). Sej afslutning!
Thank god that this isn’t the normal sound coming out of the 80s. I like how noisy it is here. The energy on Sludgefest feels like my body is melting, and Poledo is a hell of a closer. However, while songs are good, they’re a bit forgettable once the music turns off. This isn’t to say it bad, it sounds great.
Solid classic indie album, but one that I think it is slightly overrated. Some good songs, but J. Mascias's voice wears on me after a while. 3.5/5
Beyond the odd time on a guitar hero game this is my first experience listening to Dino Jr and I must say I was surprised how much I liked the album. Great guitar and drum work, the crunching classic riffs and modern licks really stand out. I am let down on this record by the style of the singer. It isn't unlike the pixies which suffer from a similar issue for me but this band play heavier music than the pixies and I can get on board with this. Will listen to more.
Actually a pretty sweet album. It was often a bit too abrasive and noisy but under that the songs are pretty interesting. The record just sounds heavy and feels like it’s just pushing against you constantly, so the album art is really a great depiction of that. The Wikipedia mentioned the influence on Nirvana and MBV and it’s 100% noticeable in the music. 7/10
Fun fuzzy alt rock. Dinosaur Jr is awesome.
4.0
Listening to this loud is the way to go. Once I pumped up the volume everything started making more sense.
An album that sounds ahead of it’s time. It is easy to draw from he line from this album to what was for in the 90s Grunge scene. Music is hard-hitting and sludgy. My only complaint is the vocals get lost in the mix.
If you’re a fan of noise rock, then I think this is your thing. You’re Living All Over Me sounds as if that is the case. It’s very loud and noisy alt rock. Hell, I’d consider it grunge. The lyrics definitely sound as if they’re from the era. It’s a bit odd, though, but I think that really adds to the album. There are parts that sound like more friendly indie rock but it’s contrasted later by distorted guitars and noisy interludes. It really does contrast but I wanna say that’s intentional. The album is trying to make that contrast. It’s very interesting. It is capped off with the avant garde Poledo, a piece of musique concrete. A very fitting way to end of the record in my opinion. This was a short but ultimately enjoyable record. It hit everything I’d want it to hit and did so spectacularly. I’d say it deserves a 9/10.
A college radio darling. That’s going back into rotation.
I was excited to see this pop up as I like Dinosaur Jr. Great fun classic grunge post punk. Love the Cure cover and even though Luke warned me it cuts off early I checked my phone twice to see what had happened.
Pretty awesome rock.
This was a pretty good album back in the day. J Mascis was a big guitar hero.
I liked this one! Great early alternative.
I love this album. I got into Dinosaur Jr through Bug and Green Mind so it was only a few years ago I first heard this album in full. Really nicely put together chaotic melody
good energy
Crunchy guitars and feedback and relentless drumming and all the shit I like. 🎸🎸🎸🎸
The way this album ends is hilarious. I thought my internet cut off for a second. A fun mix on punk music and 90's rock that randomly loves to be loud as fuck. The production is good and shitty at the same time. If I listened to this back when I was in high school I would have loved it even more. Score: 80 Art: 70
Sounds like a disheveled mess, but I am in love. It's super sloppy and unclean with shit vocals but feels so cozy. A nice glimpse into the future of rock. Incredible.
Being born and raised in Amherst MA I am legally obligated to like this album. Loud as hell, J. Mascis absolutely rips. While I really enjoy the later Dinosaur Jr. albums, their early raw sound to so influential. 3.5/5
It sounds like shit. I love it.
A strong, original guitar-driven rock album. No punk posturing or metal pretensions, just powerful and complex music. Compelling.
Personally I think that “Where you been” is their best album. This is a close second.
I was very into this band. Must've come close to wearing out my vinyl copy, it's a real joy to revisit this album 30 odd years on.
Liked it a lot. Grungy and noisy.
J.Mascis sure does love the whammy bar. A very comprehensive and well ordered album that very naturally flows from one song to the next, despite the most iconic track being a Cure cover.
Awesome
Interesting that this is late 80s, congrats on mid to late 2000s indie on just stealing the sound
An exciting down and dirty energy runs throughout this album. It is fun, kinetic, and low-fi in all the right ways. Contender for worst cover art of all time, though.
Dinosaur Jr. is the perfect example of the saying ‘you have to know the rules before you break them.’ They clearly have a lot of respect for the classic rock that can before them and incorporate a lot of the most virtuosic and melodic elements from that. However, they also have an experimental streak and incorporate the ethic of garage and punk rock to create something that is musically chaotic, but controlled. Because of the melodic and noise rock aspects, they bridge the gap connecting punk/alternative to the more commercially friendly college rock that was emerging.
Ca see the influences it had on many other band that I admire, so it's a yes from me
I had only listened to this once before but obviously “In A Jar” and “The Lung” are classics. A lot of energy and I can see how this was a big influence on shoegaze bands. A bit more psych rock influence than I always expect. So much wah and fuzz.
Lively, energetic and compelling, loved the vibe. A pretty special album.
3.5 Dirty (sometimes quite fuzzed out) grunge. The whiney sounding vocals prevent me liking the band as much as I might otherwise.
Classic “college rock” album. Mascis’ vocal style is a perfect match for their mid-tempo fuzzed out rock. A halfway point between the post-punk of the early 80s and the alt-rock of the early 90s.
A raw early version of the sound, but I love everything this band does
Another band that sound a decade ahead of their time, the 'wall of sound' approach if this record must have influenced about 90% of my favourite bands. It was really good in its own right mind, though the production was a little raw even for me!
Really enjoyed this album, has a great raw grunge sound to it. I don't know much about guitars but it sounded especially good to me! Definitely will give this a few more listens.
Kovaa räminää, hauska levy. 4/5
Well this bangs along at a nice pace. Good stuff.
I love the fun and the fury that this album gives off. Great fun listening to this record!
After years of encountering songs from this album on various playlists, I get to hear this album in full. It was worth whatever preconceptions I had for it, which is to say is pretty good. As one of the many pillars of 80s left-on-the-dial rock, Dinosaur Jr. encapsulates the feeling that permeated the time before the early 90s boom and You're Living All Over Me stands as evidence of more innocent times. Favorites: Little Fury Things, Kracked, Sludgefeast, The Lung, In a Jar, Lose.
If this had been my first Dinosaur Jr. album instead of Where You Been, I'd probably have gotten more into them. Where You Been is fine, but this album is so much better than that. Does having a couple of Lou Barlow tracks to break up the J. Mascis a bit make that big a difference? Just a great guitar album.
Nize 'n noizy
Favorite tracks are the last two, will need to relisten but i liked it overall
Actually decent a bit thrash with some questionable vocal a but co sit at decent music
Primo guitar fuzz
All the things the band is known for make an appearance on their second effort - basically slacker vocals, sweet guitar solos and walls of sound. One of the records pointing the way to the Alt-Rock boom of the 90s. Best Tracks: Little Fury Things; Sludgefest; Raisans
Interesting sound and really good
uno de los disco esencia de kate bush y muy importante para la continuidad del art pop fav songs: the fog this woman's work 3 sinceramente no me vuela y medio me irrita la voz
I feel better about buying a Jazzmaster
Right off the bat-- I am loooving the vibe of the first song. Overall, I really loved this album! One of my favorites so far
Excited for this one, Dinosaur Jr. is the band I like but don't know much about. Their album "Without a sound" is in my rotation. With Feel the pain being the biggest song I know. Crazy to think these bands were doing this way before we found them... I had to do some research, Just like heaven was added later, this album originally released in '87 the same year The Cure put out the song. This album was re released later with the track added. Robert Smith, according to Wikipedia called this his favorite cover of the song and it even influenced how they play it live. Very cool. Album added to my favorites.
Great songs and guitar tone. Willfully sloppy in places but I can't get behind the Lou section at the end. Obviously improved by the inclusion of the 'Just Like Heaven' cover.
A compelling and endlessly interesting. On first listen you can get bogged down in the noise and dissonance, but every song has an interesting melodic line that shines through on subsequent listen. The noise is always there to keep things tense and never allow you te get overly comfortable because you never know when the beautiful will give way to to the sinister. It took me a few listens to appreciate the tension and release of the music on this album, but now I'm all in. 4.5 stars
decent. better version of peter frampton than peter frampton does.
Dinosaur Sr did it better
Grunge is solidly my least favorite genre in this list so far, and that makes the middle of this record drag a little bit for me. It's the kind of music I can imagine hearing in a small venue, but not by a band I would likely go out to see. Yet it stays loud and stays good: Dinosaur Jr. do their thing better than many of their genre contemporaries, even if the guitar tone is nothing to write home about. As YLAOM is to that mentioned show, Poledo is to listening to a cheap CD player. That's what convinced me of the project's merit in the end: Putting that song on a ukulele takes some doing.
Vraiment aimé ça, clairement un album qui a eu un gros imapct sur la scène grunge et alternative en général. Définitivement à réécouter.
I always forget about Dinosaur Jr 🦕 Great pre-grunge band, totally doesn't sound like 1987.
Post-punk noise pop with gnarly guitars and whining vocals. Solid (7/10) FT: Little Fury Things, Just Like Heaven
A decade before Blink’s debut and you see pop punk in its infancy. Raw production, a tad too long, and singing could be better, but a good rock album overall.
05/06/22
Solid album. A good variety of songs.
I like it, it needed a couple of listens to process. A nice mix of styles and songwriting, although no one or two songs stood out. I'll be revisiting this one
Already listened
I love hearing this in more detail, though it sounds at time like it was recorded underwater. The template is here right from the start. Blazing and punky, and yet melodic. Mascis gets away with so much thanks to the weirdly-working mix of the searing solos and slacker vocals. I had no idea that the Cure cover went so far back. The strangeness of Poledo is a nice add. How Kracked sets up Green Mind songs. What rough and hot and sweet playing.
3,5; closer to 4
This was a surprisingly good album. I will certainly be listening to this again!
Don't like Poledo, but the rest of this album is an awesome, fuzzy romp. J Mascis is a guitar genius. I also love Lee Ranaldo's contribution on Little Fury Things.
I had low expectations for this. I was anticipating something grungy & dull, especially since one of the members founded Sebadoh right after this release. But I changed my mind after I got slapped in the face by the first thirty seconds Little Furry Things. Their sound is driving, noisy and guitar-obsessed. Even though the vocals can be a bit run-of-the-mill at times, J Mascis guitar work is fresh and always in your face.
Alt rock of old
Crazy this came out in 87... so good
You're Living All Over Me is a good indie rock album of Dinosaur Jr. I especially like Sludgefeast and Little Fury Things (with Lee Ranaldo).
Really excellent stuff.
Would have been five stars if it wasn’t for his voice.
Not bad at all, noisy but in a good way
This album was 50/50 for me. 50% great songs and 50% not so good. The good ones were really enjoyable though. And their cover of Just Like Heaven was pretty great.
BT: Little Fury Things (1) Sludgefeast (3) The Lung (4) Raisans (5) In a Jar (7) Just like heaven (10)
Interesting. Little Fury Things is an excellent opening track.
Damn this is a good album I've listened to it before probably 5 times or so and it never really grabbed me....until this time. Great melodies, great songs and I love the Cure cover. O found the thin sounding production but this time I could listen beyond it. So close to a 5 but ultimately a strong 4 🌟
Good to listen to when you want to punch someone in the throat 10/10.
Really good. A bit noisy and annoying at times, but mostly has a lot of good melodies and good songs
This was surprisingly good. Strong hard rock, metal and grunge vibes (Nirvana pretty much copied Dinosaur Jr’s sound). ‘Poledo’ sucks and feels like an afterthought, but the rest of the album rocks. Good stuff.
Great album
Sasvim dobar album.
Very metally lol. Couldn’t understand most of the lyrics but liked the music
Like the band a lot, I love the vocal style and instrumentation. Wouldnt recommend the album to everyone though
Crunchy distorted guitars and crazy vocals. I love this. Will listen again. The cure cover is amazing and hilarious.
I loved this album: very pre-grunge era rock which sounds kind of like early Nirvana, got great beats to it and the heavily distorted guitars make my lil heart sing. Can't give it five stars because as a whole album, I don't think the songs fit together as well as they could have.
Erreicht mich Jahrzehnte zu spät, aber cool!
Rough gut aber wirklich auffallend schlecht gesungen
Around the same time that Sonic Youth was transitioning from no-wave experimental rock to noisy alt rock, Dinosaur Jr. was in full-force with this second studio album. It's a tidal wave of sound and distortion, as the guitars sweep you away while the drums keep time. It's almost a comforting kind of noise, opposed to the dark and haunting noise of Sonic Youth. One if the big problems with the metaphorical wave of sound though is that it tends to wash over you and get a little same-y. The obvious differentiator though is Poledo, a bizzare sound collage mixed with a heavily-degraded tape recording of a simple folk song that closes the album. Crazy! Overall definitely worth the listen for the overall tone being presented.
I enjoyed this. Early grunge, good noise.
Raggedy, smart, and ahead of the curve
Pues chido, o sea las primeras canciones me la pasé bien, pero luego ya fue un poco como lo mismo y terminé algo aburrido.
Nice, echter Kracher im letzten Stück
This is one those bands that I've known about for ages but never really gotten around to actually listening to it. Now I did and found that this is some enjoyable alt/noise/indie kind of thing. Nice melodies and lots of fuzz'n'overdrive.
Messy raucous noise rock drenched in squalls of feedback. I can definitely see this won't be to everyone's taste, but I dig it. Can certainly hear the influence it had on shoegaze... Fave track - "Little Fury Things", for sure.
One of the greatest indie guitarist
Ahead of it's time, preceding much of the sound of the 90s. Only reference points from that time I can think of are The Meat Puppets and some of the more melodic songs by Sonic Youth where Thurston sings. Both bands also on SST at the time. Odd ending to the album feeling cut off.
Had to give it a few listens. When it works for me, it works well. It feels like just a little bit more "off" and it would be bad, but it holds itself together for me just enough to be likable. Like on songs "Knacked" and "Sludgefest". The delivery on some songs like around 1 min+ on "Little Fury Things" is rough. But in general, I like the garage-lofi-distortion-noise onslaught. I'll have to dig into them a little more.
I liked it a lot.
I was just watching some videos about this era in alternate rock history yesterday, so this feels very appropriate. There's just something about the energy of this album that I really like. The vocals don't blow me away, but I love the guitars and drums. 4/5
tarpit ending is cucumber jonesish
un peu violent, pas tout écouté, mais bien dans l'ensemble
3 1/2 Stars: As a historical album this really works. You can hear the sound that would go on to influence so many in the alternative music world. It's really good. I just probably won't ever find myself back to this record. I appreciate it's place in the music world, but not a must listen for me.
I grew up in the Grunge era and listened to the music, but I'm not sure I have ever heard an entire Dinosaur Jr. album. You're Living All Over Me sounded about like I thought it would sound. I did not care for Poledo, because it seemed to drone on and on too much for me. The cover of The Cure's Just Like Heaven was inspired, even if the background screaming was a bit odd, as was the song randomly cutting off. But hey, Dinosaur Jr brought something new to the song. Little Fury Things starts off very hardcore sounding and then evolved into a great rock song. The production on the entire album is the foundation for a lot of the sound that came out a few years later and created so many flannel-wearing rock stars, which created more post-grunge bands in response, which eventually led to a more lightening up of music in the late 90's with everything not so dark, which led to boy bands coming back in fashion, which eventually led to record companies seeing that pop songs are the way to sell records, which eventually led to producer-led albums that feature the singer as more of an adornment to the song, and eventually the homogenization of music that has ruined everything. To say this album probably ruined music may actually be true. But for now, we are in 1987 and music is still poor and the production is still not great but we like it that way. My favorite tracks: Little Fury Things Kracked The Lung In a Jar Just Like Heaven
Decent 3,5
Decent listen, I enjoyed the vibe and feeling more than the lyrics
Had a hard time with this one. Mostly didn't like it but it was actually not bad.
Not really my thing, too noisy, but I get why people like it.
Aika hyvä levy, mutta bändit kuten Nirvana ja Smashing Pumpkins jotka ottivat tästä vaikutteita, tekivät saman paljon paremmin. Lopuksi kuultiin yllättävä Ghe Cure-cover.
I like their sound, but sometimes they have too heavy distortion/feedback like at the start of the album and the end of Tarpit. Or static or ridiculous effects on the vocals. The best song was Lose and the worst was Poledo.
I know my indie cred will take a hit for this, but Dino Jr have never really been my bag. Riffs, vocal lines, solos, and structure all seem to be recycled from record to record, and it just doesn't do much for me. Ill stick with "Green Mind" whenever i'm in the mood.
Dinosaur Jr. is an indie rock band that started in the 80s. J Mascis' use of heavy distortion and slacker vocal style have been very influential on other bands. Most of the songs on this album are good but are similar to each other with some having a pop feel to them. The last two songs are different from the others on the album. Poledo is just garbage and their cover of Just Like Heaven was interesting but not good.
This had some moments but not enough of them. And the solid cover of “Just Like Heaven” wasn’t even part of the official album. Top tracks: “Little Fury Things,” “Sludgefest”
Surprised how early this came out, can see how it influenced a lot of bands after.
ok tiers
