Reviews (page 4 of 7)

rockt - eigentlich nicht allzu schlecht.

Early grunge vibes

Okay...I agree, this was good enough to make the list.

Normal

Bra! Gillar det, men tycker att Without a sound är bättre (min favorit). Gillade Sludgefeast mycket och ett extra plus är Just like heaven! Bra cover på en låt jag älskar.

Would have probably sounded better in 1987 when it was released. 3

Nostalgic college band. Back part of the album got a bit spacey but the raw grungy stuff was good

Listening session: may 30th, while drinking coffee Listened to before: no Thoughts: Dinosaur Jr. is a killer band name. The music is fun (especially the guitarwork), but it’s not something I would listen to regularly Favourite tracks: Little Fury Thing, The Lung & In A Jar

As with "Bug" instrumentally strong but vocally weak. Mix has the vocals low as well... 3/5

7/10 A little too much noise effect for my taste, but interesting

This was some decent grunge.

Ultimately forgettable, I think.

One of the best covers.

The experience of listening was enjoyable, hearing grunge in an early state is very cool too. No particular track grabbed me here though. Straight up the middle kinda feeling about an album.

This surprised me in a good way, because I hadn't realised this was going on in 1987. It's really grungey. (Unfortunately, 1987 was my year of hair metal. I know.) I can't go higher than three though, because it's not actually that good, and, with a very few exceptions, I dislike a drawling vocal. But I like the attitude and the raw, muddy energy.

If someone introduced me to Dinosaur Jr. 20 years ago, I would have been all over them. Unfortunately, I don't have the same appetite for this blend of passive aggressive, angsty stoner rock as I once did, and this album didn't hit as close as I would have maybe expected. There is some later Dinosaur Jr. that I am a bit more familiar with and still enjoy quite a bit, but I feel like this album didn't quite scratch the same itch.

Solid proto-grunge entry with a dash of Sonvolt thrown in. I guess you could say this album would have done well throughout the 90s as well. Anyway, a solid rocker that stands out against its peers well. Hard to believe it is only their 2nd album. I might have to pay a little more attention to them.

Basically grunge. Not bad

Some punk energy that ultimately blurred all together to me. Some songs beats reminded me of songs that came later from different bands and I be interested to know if they sampled this album, but that'd just be fun facts. It wouldn't improve this album for me

I love the scuzzy guitar tone, and there's some pretty excellent riffs on this album. Favorite track: Sludgefeast

I don’t know much about alt rock or the grunge scene but as I listened to this album, it was clear that this band had a huge influence on bands like Nirvana and Alice in Chains. This is not an album I would put on while I cook dinner or while I’m kicking back on the deck. It’s weird and kind of disturbing but I find many of grunges best bands are. It’s not my cup of tea but I gotta say, this is a great album. I love the off pitch vocals, pedal effects, and unique yet awesome guitar work. It weaves well over the basic pop/rock chord progressions. I will never listen to this again but I will give credit where credit is due. I can see how many would give this album a 4 but it’s just not my cup of tea so it gets a strong 3.

As a teenager, I had the SST CD version of this album which has a cover of the Peter Frampton song, Show Me the Way. It's too bad that album version isn't on Spotify

This isn't too far off from some stuff that I like, but I just don't think they have the songs. Not on this album, at least.

Hmm. Interesting to see so many rave reviews for this one. It was good, but didn’t do a lot for me. 6/10 Pretty Good

Ykw yah

I enjoyed it. Love the random-ass noises they add in. Favorites: The Lung Tarpit (the screams of the damned outta nowhere was wild) Poledo

Always liked Dinosaur Jr. but never really did a deep dive on them. One of my college roommates had one of their early albums (maybe this one?) and I loved "Feel the Pain" when it was on MTV. I like their less fuzzy/noisy stuff more. Like the end of "Tarpit" just gives me a headache, similar to a lot of My Bloody Valentine.

Short, nothing amazing today, but revolutionary at the time.

Another same-sounding alternative rock album from the 80s. The next one will get 2 stars.

Nice bedroom-y grunge

it was ok, some really good guitar and some fine drumming but the vocal style was crap.

This album rocks hard tho I don’t remember any specific songs

Sounds like a 90s rock record, but is actually an 80s rock record. The music is punk, grunge, but upbeat and rocking. The vocals are a little drab and flat, but they complement the mood of the music well. I know this band had/has a cult following in a way, but I was never part of it. This is a solid record though and I hear other modern artists that were inspired by them.

Pretty good, but not really my thing

I won’t go so far as to say this album was ahead of its time. But it’s one that was good when it was released. But has only gotten more appreciated over time.

This is the soundtrack for a rock horror flick, in a good way. Vocally I was not enjoying it as much, but the instrumentals and overall atmosphere pulled me in.

The mixing is so fucked it really detracts from the experience. I get it’s super influential but it would be way better if I could actually hear the instruments and vocals

Some interesting music but that last cover was awful

Great guitar sound. Feels influential.

Thought this was solid but not exceptionally. Dug the guitars thought got a little too noise rock at points. Clear to see the influence these guys had on later bands. Cool they’re still out there doing their thing. 3.5/5

This was like Sonic Youth and Pavement but good.

More complex than it sounds, artsier than it seems and noisier than it has to be. It kind of works but there’s something about it that manages to be unique and still sound like so much else at the same time. I don’t think it is a game changing album nor do I think it is the best expression of the time or genre or approach.

A big record in alternative US music no doubt, but it’s only a rough draft of the band Dinosaur Jr turned out to be, and it’s low-fi approach struggles to capture the wall of sound they produced. Enjoyable, but feels like it could have been more.

Early nirvana vibes. Lots of noise. Not my favorite but definitely can see how this set the tone for grunge rock

Sometimes it is hard to get past the noise but I generally like this band. Little Fury Things and their cover of Just Like Heaven are great. I prefer Bug over this album. 3/5

Actually surprised I didn't hate this, as noise rock is not my thing at all. Interested in checking out some other albums now.

Schizophrenia simulator with the random noises thrown in Fave track: Little Furry Things

Whatever. Stupid name for a band honestly. 2.5/5

A vast improvement from their first album. Things would only improve over time and they are still putting out killer albums today.

Notable Textzeile: Can't believe a single word I've said And every subject's the only one that's dead And there's nothing from my side Am meisten Lachen musste ich als der viel zu Gitser-lastige und zu metallige Track "Sludgefeast" einfach mittem im Gitarrensolo ausgeblendet wird, weil es jetzt wirklich mal reicht.

This may be one of the first grudge adjacent albums I’ve actually enjoyed! It’s still middle of the road for me in the grand scheme of things but all in all not bad.

Pretty good but feels a little cluttered

I would have loved this as a 15 year old. It’s noisy and aggressive but still reasonably melodic. Vocals are weak but work with the material.

I found this album charming. I'm not usually a fan of punk-y music but something about the blend and production of the intstruments and vocals and composition of the songs felt good. It's a strong 3.5, but rounding down to a 3 because I don't know if I would reach for it again on my own.

A little wacky, and a little weird. Favourite Track(s): Kracked Least Favourite Track(s): Poledo

Pretty good pre-grunge sound and a big influence on the 90s rock sound.

Strange that they picked this one.

I have never liked dinosaur jr. I still do not like dinosaur jr. Listening to this while working on the weekend made everything worse. No. I do not like dinosaur jr. 1 star for the Cure cover. 1 star because they aren’t as bad as some other bands. 1 star because they shouldn’t be punished for me listening while working on the weekend.

I didn’t dislike this album, but it also didn’t really do much for me either. The fuzzy guitars and laid-back indie rock sounds are fine, but nothing here really grabbed my attention. It kind of reminds me of eating an unseasoned hamburger—perfectly edible, just not all that satisfying.

My only exposure to Dinosaur Jr. was their cover of The Cure's Just Like Heave. So I knew it was going to be a little weird, but I wasn't prepared for how weird. This album started out okay and got progressively stranger and noisier. It started out sounding sort of like a mix between a punkier Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. The first few songs were pretty fun, then the middle of the album sort of blended together with several songs that sounded similar. I'm also not sure if they intentionally played with meter on The Lung, or if the drummer is just that bad at keeping time. Regarding the cover, I'm kind of conflicted about it. When I first heard it I hated it, but I have to admit that it's growing on me. I know it's Robert Smith's favorite cover, and I'll give it a 3 because it started out decent and the cover is kind of fun. But the singer and the back half ruin it. Did I need to hear this before I die? Maybe

Not bad, not bad

Listened previously. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Very Good - Strong opener. The opening trio is very good actually. I don't think the rest of the album holds up quite as well as that but I still enjoy all of it. Some fun guitar work and just enough variation to remain interesting. Good album.

You could see where they were going with this. It gets really good towards the end.

Reminded me a lot of foo fighters

Un peu trop rock pour moi

Strong album. I love Dinosaur Jr's vocals, which contrast with the sometimes chaotic musical arrangements. Some incredible guitar sections and distinctive drums. Maybe fair to say that none of the songs jump out individually - except for Just Like Heaven. The original is possibly my GOAT song, and this is possibly my GOAT cover - love how they turn it into a completely unique track, with the screamed 'YOU's throughout the chorus working so well. Somehow, even after countless listens, the cut-off at the end always gets me! 7/10

I think I’m a slightly bigger fan of later Dinosaur Jr, when they’re slightly more poppy or maybe slightly less noisy? But, this was enjoyable, fun to think that this came out in the 80s, it seems anachronistic.

Dino Jr. is integral to the foundation 90s alternative. Way ahead of its time.

I have no opinion on this album. Felt like royalty free rock music. Poledo was a weird switch before having a recognizable song come on at the end. It probably should have just been the end of the album.

I have some of the exact same thoughts as the last Dinosaur Jr. album we had. I can definitely see how this impacted Nirvana if even just for how the vocals are.

Alright. 3/5

I get it. I can hear how influential this album is, but the vocals fall short for me. Maybe if listened to Dinosaur Jr growing up or I had more time to digest it, I would rate it higher, but it just doesn’t hit for me. The cover Just Like Heaven was great. I would give it a 2.5, but since I can’t, I will round up for being so influential?

Not at all what I was expecting and not a genre I know much about. Didn't know these rock sounds had been so established by then it felt out of the 90s to me. Cool stuff but just not my genre

It's noise, but a different kind of noise than I'm used to hearing which is interesting. Ultimately I didn't manage to really pick up on any of the tracks and I've mostly forgotten them by the time I'm writing this, but it wasn't terrible Standouts Poledo 3/5

Your living over all the history of the rock that still outputs today.

Reminds me of the type of bands I'd hear at the old underground music shows I went to waaaay back in the day.

It's like Midwest Emo with more rock, which would be really cool if I liked Midwest Emo. Objectively really cool album but just wasn't 100% for me.

I had heard of this band but never listened to them. Kinda noisy at times and I’m not a big fan of the lead singers voice but overall, it was an ok listening experience.

Random

They've got riffs but this just isn't for me. Won't deny their impact.

Well that was wild, interesting, bad, good, wild

There were some good parts but overall not great. Generous 3.

i *like* the music. the music is good. it's got a vibe. it just feels like there's so little that's exceptional about it. give me one or two more Poledo's to break things up and I'll be a happy man. favorite song is Kracked or Sludgefeast. really like a soft 3

A little more musical but still the same Junior. Maybe the vocals are just growing on me, but I swear they were like 10% more melodic this time around and 10% less noisegrunge. Either way I think I liked this one a little more than the first alb we got. I'm also so lukewarm on the Just Like Heaven cover that I have no comments on it 5.4/10

Classic alternative rock/grunge album from the late 1980s. It's raw and noisy, but there is not so much variety in it and the singing isn't great. It's an important album in the development of US rock, but didn't liked it very much, so it gets an average rating.

Some bangers but a few too many guitar solos

Not bad, another new band for me

Alright, I was a little reluctant about this one. The first dinosaur jr. album that I heard through this was not my jam. But a few songs in and I'm really digging this. It's pretty metal, and post punk. Good heavy riffs, but with an indie rock style vocals.

Not my kind of style, but I dig the heavy distorsion and noise throughout the whole record.

Terrible and delightful

Too sludgy for me

Not my fave band from this era/genre but still some good grungy stuff on here

A classic of the proto grunge genre ... influential, but it didn't do much for me. (It's probably a "me" thing, not a Djr thing.)

This album really hit the flavour of the 80s. Not the music I listen to back then but the sound is familiar.

I’ve never loved Dinosaur Jr. I’ve seen them in concert 35 years ago, and I enjoyed it, I think, but I never bought the albums or sought them out. Listening to this record doesn’t feel like something that will change that.

Lofi as hell. There were some better moments, but also some absolute earape at some points.

Loved this when released. Didn’t really hold up.

This is a fun album, but then I noticed the year it came out ... and it was definitely ahead of it's time!

I have tries many times, but i sadly just cant seem to get in dinosaur jr.

Another album right up my street but I find myself struggling to get into. My eyes lit up when I heard the cure at the end which shows how uninterested by the rest of it I was

2/10, 20%

I’ve listened to this album before after it was recommended to me by a friend and I find myself coming back to the same conclusion as last time - I just don’t love this album very much. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why people enjoy it, it’s simply not my cup of tea! A few good moments throughout, but otherwise not anything too special - kinda middle of the road for me.

I like some of this but those guitar solos have always been mehhhhhh to me.

Kinda rules, has some early shoegaze/fuzz characteristics

Instrumentals are good, vocals are lacking for me

This is one of those bands where the major label albums better than the early indie albums. Where You Been and Green Mind are their apex (both of which would likely get 5's). I like Dinosaur Jr but this is not the album I come back to. I'm not sure if I've listened to it in at least 15 years but was glad to revisit Kracked Also, they are in close competition to Jesus and Mary Chain for the loudest band I've ever seen live

Interesting

Enjoyed it a lot more than expected. The GCSE Art album cover is a nice touch.

The album was def not what I'm used to but I vibed w it and I am going to give it a second listen 🎧!

Correcto

Sounds like it was recording on a potato - good vibes though

it’s like grunge before grunge. i liked the cover of just like heaven

3-4, so hard for me to leave the score

I have a soft spot for Dino Jr. - the songs on this kind of blend together but I enjoy it

Pretty fun stuff, I enjoyed it.

yer da just found his old waah waah pedal, but he's nailed it to be fair

Yeah decent

26. worth a relisten

I like these guys... I can't say for sure why though... I just do.

5 seconds in i'm already enjoying the energy on this one

Great guitar forward alt album. That Cure cover is rad. Not my favorite of the era but perfectly listenable and well composed with decent variance amongst the track list.

Struggled to know what to rate this for a while, but think I’m going to go middle of the road. I don’t mind music that’s a bit rough around the edges but there was a bit too much of that for me here. Some great moments though and not a band I’m massively familiar with so could see myself finding some great albums. Not quite a 4 this time

Overrated

It's ok. I've always kind of thought I like D jr, but realized I've only listened to later bits. This is a little rougher around the edges with less hooks, but more guitar experiments. First, the voice. He's got one of these plaintive, almost too whiny voices. But for some reason, I'm not as annoyed by it as I usually am by this type. Can certainly understand someone not liking this because of that. The guitars are the best part. Unusual phrasing and interesting choices. For me though, I like just a bit more polish on it. C'mon, production guy, twirl the knobs! I'll give this a 3 because while I don't have any particular high points, I wasn't ever bothered by anything either. MOR

Still get startled by the abrupt end to Just Like Heaven after all these years

Least favorite album so far 6 days in. Not my genre maybe but hated some of the auto play after less so maybe this album wasn't doing it for me.

pretty good

More impressive and influential than purely enjoyable for me. Quite buzzy and noisy, which makes it difficult for me to really connect with on a consistent basis. Moments are transcendent, then undercut (like the opening of Poledo, as just one example).

Unique, guitar-driven noise rock with a much more tuneful construction than most other music in this genre. The album jumps from style to style, changing rhythm and tempo but still bringing the same energy and attitude. It’s playful and limber and this makes it stand out. Yes, the vocals grate and it gets repetitive, but there are a lot more positives here to enjoy than most other offerings in this style.

Doesn't get more garage rock than this, you can almost smell the oil embedded in the cement and hear the bass players dad working on his project 55 Chevy in the background. This album grew on me more and more with each track. Screaming guitar, solid rythm section, just a great garage punk sound. But the vocals set it apart. They feel out of place but fit in nicely and add a melodic element that softens the edge. This would have been an entirely different album with a more traditional punk vocalist and would have been far less interesting as a result. I ended up liking this album quite a bit. I imagine this is how Neil Young would have sounded had he gone punk rock.

It was ok, I wouldn’t be rushing back to it

I'm warming up to this band! At least this album. It's not just pure grungey noise, I'm actually hearing the music this time around.

Pretty interesting and grungy listen. Most of the songs I felt were "good" but some were great when they got a bit more "noise rock". Poledo was a great finisher. 3/5

I wasn't a big fan of this album. A lot of the instrumentation was cool. I really didn't like the dissonant horror vibes in some of the songs. And I definitely did not like the signing for a large majority of this album

This is overall an alright album but nothing too exciting. It was alright having it in the background, but it was a bit meh overll.

I can see why it's on the list. The music sounded innovative for the time just dont see myself re-listening. 3/5.

Not my favorite vocals. Last song just stops

Decent. That is all

Was very noisy at the start but immediately after was good. Entertaining alt rock. Didn’t love the second to last track but all the others were enjoyable

Not bad, but not something I would seek out on a regular basis. “In a Jar” was catchy.

Enjoyed

Who? Not my dead ex-husband, that's for damn sure.

I enjoyed this more than expected. Some awesome raw and energised music that helped me get through my day yesterday! I'd give it another go! Calm down on the guitar effects.

This was fine - in my usual wheelhouse but just nothing really stood out and I found the vocalist a little whiney.

always nice but I'm actually downgrading it

Decent rock, although some of the instrumentals were too screechy. Great cover of the last song.

This one of theirs was just okay. Also the Cure cover ends way too abruptly.

Eeehhhhh - it’s perfectly ok grunge / alt / indie rock, but it’s a bit paint-by-numbers. It passed the time, but it wasn’t very exciting.

This would be a band that puffer probably likes and that is upsetting I have to listen to it now

Enjoyed this and reckon I’ll enjoy it more with a few extra listens

It was music ten years before it's time

Feels very 80s if you're into that. Otherwise not much to say, not bad though.

Obviously influential. Not my favorite Gen-X Band but probably inspired them

Quiet, a little indistinct but good

Interesting

One of my proudest record store moments was buying Where You Been - I think in the very final days of the CD long box - after school from the very incongruous hipster record store existing in an alley in my extremely whitebread suburb and the owner giving me huge props for my choice. I feel like I spent a lot of minimum wage money on CDs partly to get his approval. That album was great. This is like an audition tape for that album. The guitar is unmistakeable and I am a big fan of singular guitar heroes of which J Mascis is one. Also I share the same first initial and a pretty similar last name to J Mascis and at a NYC law firm interview in 2005 the interviewer was hoping I might be him. Which is pretty unusual for an NYC biglaw partner to think.

Positivt overraska. Forrige Dinosaur-albumet jeg hørte var helt katastrofe.

3.5 I like Dinosaur Jr just fine, but again, not sure what two of their albums on this list does. They’re great, but once you hear one album from them you’re prettt much covered.

More interesting than good, but sure, take my 3.

Listening to Dinosaur Jr is rather like doom scrolling. You know there will be some good stuff if you keep going, but song structure is irrelevant, so you just have to tackle the whole album wading through the bad singing and unsettling low tempo random chord changes until you get a nice loud bit with an epic solo and enjoy your momentary dopamine release. Repeat album after album. Tbh I don’t massively enjoy their albums, they’re much better live, the ratio of loud bits and epic solos is much much higher.

This has done nothing to shake my conviction that grunge took the bad, basic bits of both punk and metal and created a teen catch-all genre that sounded rebellious without really being so. But anyway...this wasn't all that. This slightly shades Nirvana though, by dint of being bouncier and looser. I almost bailed halfway through, but am glad I stuck with it to the end, for the more experimental touches (one star) and their Cure cover (another star). If I ever play this again, I would probably start halfway through.

The Spotify mix of this sounded tinny as fuck. Which is a shame, as it's probably half decent when beefed up. Bloody loved The Cure cover.

I don’t think Dinosaur Jr realized how funny of a prank cutting off Just Like Heaven would be in the digital music age. I downloaded it as an mp3 from some sketchy website and thought I got a bad file so I downloaded it from elsewhere and same thing. So I went in YouTube and sure enough that’s just how the song ends. But this was the earlier 2000s so downloading an mp3 took more than a minute, so I sat and waited for two desperate downloads before realizing I’d been played. Good stuff. Anyways, this is a good album but it’s not my personal favorite of theirs. It’s like a 3.7 for me.

Kind of fun. Harder rock than I had heard from them before.

I was surprised that this was from the 80's, it has more of a 2000's vibe to it. Crunchy buzzy early garage style indie rock in the style of aggressive Green Day and 80's punk with slightly more polish.

If they made the guitars louder it would've been perfect

I liked this a lot more than I expected. I was worried we’d have growling and that’s about it, but there’s plenty of melody here.

Couple of pure noise moments that are the Jose Mourinho headphones meme but outside of that this is a solid album that I would definitely play again. A+ cover of Just Like Heaven.

This is one of those bands that I should like more than I actually do. This was ok but pretty forgettable for me, 2.5/5

Not enthralling but it’s good

Decent and relatively straightforward drone + grunge material.

Great. And always good to be reminded that my younger self was not smart and avoided this for no good reason.

these guys are always cool enough. weird enough that they don’t get trapped in that bad punk bubble that i think some groups find themselves in

I don't know much about Dinosaur Jr (I know the song "Feel The Pain", which is not on this album, and maybe nothing else). This album's sound is like grunge/alt and it was released in 1987, so that's kind of early. In general I think their vocals are on the drony side, but otherwise the tracks are mostly pretty good (except Poledo, which is weird and hard to listen to). Interesting to learn that the band was original "Dinosaur" but had a fallout, so the band "Dinosaur Jr" splintered off.

My enjoyment of this was very much tied to which vocalist was singing. Despite being a trail blazer for the alt rock sound, wasn't otherwise catchy (beyond the first song and the Cure cover.)

Grunge album. Didn't love it or hate it. Crazy cover of the Cure to finish off the album - I kind of liked it.

I can hear hear the Neil Young vibes and I can hear what Kurt Cobain would have liked but this was not for me. I’m not really a wall of sound appreciator but I can see the appeal for someone who is. I’m hoping there’s another album that comes up that’s more for me. I also super hate that Just Like Heaven cover.

Didn't wow me, didn't bore me....middle of the road in my book.

Enjoyed the album especially the song just like Heaven

Alright.

A fun album but not a large amount of stand out tracks

Started strong fell off. I’ll stick to the cure thanks

I know this is more punk than grunge, but this had to be an influence on Nirvana.

The godfathers of modern noise rock. If you dig The Pixies, you'll like this.

Super fun raw punk-adjacent album.

The vocals are horrendous. Everything else is pretty solid. I have some reservations against distortion unless it's counterbalanced by a smoother element, otherwise it just comes off as music that's deliberately obtuse and hard to approach. What exactly about this makes you want to hum it, to come back and listen to it again? The answer, in this album's case, is the almost soundscapey backing instrumental. If you can manage to tune out the vocals, which (as another reviewer identified) are consistently very out-of-tune (flat), you end up with a surprisingly gratifying set of instruments. I really like the rise and fall of textures throughout the record. In a Jar has a fresh, simplistic, punky feel, while the track immediately following it, Lose, is a muddy (yet fast), bluesy number. Sludgefeast alternates between foreboding softness and foreboding heaviness, creating an almost prog-like structure in the process. Despite being the 2nd most popular song here, I had to try pretty hard to enjoy Little Fury Things (though I got there in the end). To Mr J. Mascis: vocals don't get more in tune if you double them. But the guitar, drums, and assorted percussion are great – if a little cliché for their time. The guitar solo in the album closer, Just Like Heaven, is much better: melodic and skilful, ducking out of the ultra-distortion style into a softer, 80s-esque kind of grunginess. The end of the track is extremely sudden if you aren't watching the progress bar. Unfortunately though, there are some obviously bad songs on here too. I found myself grimacing throughout Tarpit because the singing is so horrifically bad and the instrumentation doesn't *quite* save it. Poledo sounds like early Pink Floyd mixed together with low-quality hallucinogens and a strong desire for filler material with zero musical content. At least the Floyd were had some convincing musical ideas. Poledo is a complete nothing burger. (And any review worth its salt will take this 6-minute disaster into account.) 3/5 Key tracks: Sludgefeast, In a Jar, Just Like Heaven

Liked this vibe, reminds me of shoegaze but obviously early on. Great guitar tones and sounds just not grabbing me for the songs

Album 884 of 1089 Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me (1987) Rating : 3 / 5 I’m familiar with the band and even have a couple of their tracks saved to my “like” list, so I went into this one knowing what to expect from their sound. While it definitely has that signature Dino Jr. style I enjoy, it just didn’t hold up to some of the other work I’ve heard from them. Still, it was a pleasant enough listen, and one I wouldn’t mind revisiting, but certainly not the best they’ve put out. They’re very much a hit-or-miss band for me, and this one landed somewhere in the middle.

Better than expected

Sounds like a skateboarding video soundtrack

Dinosaur Jr is one of those bands that I either like the track or don't. Not many middle of the road tracks for me.

Back in my younger years this would be something id listen to.

Enjoyed listening to it, and the bonus of a cover of The Cure’s Just Like Heaven at the end was very welcome. 3.5 out of 5, but 3 seems too low so I’m going to give it a 4.

This was alright. Some of the guitar work was cool. But why was the ending so abrupt? The art is cool.

Sludgefeast amirite. Fuzz for all!

Wouldn’t be a first pick, but I could listen to it again.

It’s good but it’s just…incomplete. Fragments of everything are there but the overall songwriting doesn’t build anything out of them. Random cutoff in just like heaven to end it is apt Tough 3 since I really do like this album overall but I don’t feel like it deserves a 4

Wild to me that this is from ‘87. Sounds squarely like a 90s grunge/noise effort. Extra points for that, despite the vocals being a bit grating

I am not the biggest fan of alternative rock, which features the guitar heavily. I can listen to this, but I wouldn't add any song to my playlist.

I listened to this on Friday and had some thoughts I wanted to write but never did and now I can’t remember anything specific about this. I think it felt like ot was almost pregrungie but it was heavier than the 90s “hits” that i know. It was fine.

Pretty fast pased album with good guitar mostly. A little shoegaze-y with Tarpit, but not in a bad way. Solid album

The lead guitarist can sure play that thing! Pretty heavy for the Alt rock I've listen too. Pretty sweet. I wasn't overly thrilled about the vocalist. 6/10

Grunge rock. Started out solid but fell apart with a few weird songs at the end.

Resulta un poco ruidoso hoy en día. Hay detalles de calidad.

I just listened to The Velvet Undergroud and Nico and I mentioned how it can be a difficult listen but it was also very rewarding. I find this album to be equally difficult but with less reward. I do think the first half of the album is pretty solid without being exceptional, but I don't particularly enjoy the second half. Some of the guitar soloing is pretty badass and i dig the big crunchy guitars. Vocals don't really do it for me. I find some songs a little bit unimaginative. Favourite tracks - Little Fury Things & Kracked. 7/10

Really good, can definitely tell it was ahead of it's time, probably inspired a lot of future bands. Early punk grunge style. A bit grating at a few times though

Good album. A little J Mascis goes a long way.

Pretty good

While this album arrived earlier than "Bug", another album on this project from Dinosaur Jr., I feel like this album is the better representation of the direction of alternative rock and grunge of the 90s. This is also the far more listenable album of the two. It has some great riffs and some incredible, gritty vocals. Their cover of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" was a mixed bag for me. Musically, it was pretty good. Vocally, he literally seemed to drone the vocals as off-key and as off-tempo as possible. The very abrupt ending of the song caught me quite off guard, too. I would say when all was said and done, there was enough to make this a 3, but barely so. The "Just Like Heaven" cover really almost pushed this into the red for me.

Standout Songs: Kracked Sludgefeast Raisans Lose

You know what's great about punk rock and alternative albums from the 80s? Many songs, under 40 minutes. Dinosaur Jr are a great band that don't get enough attention, but the influence they yield was enough to take credit for most of the 90s Alternative grunge sound. 3.5/5

Pre-grunge and their first real kick at this new sound. It needs work. It's on this list because it's gloomy (lyrics), heavy and grungy (guitar/bass and drum sounds), a bit tonal or a bit screamy (vocals) and that's so much of what grunge alternative became. And while I liked Little Fury Things, Kracked, and Sludgefeast (which kick off the album) I started to feel like the album was repeating a bit after that. Or it dipped a bit. I don't know what the deal was with Poledo to end the album. Both Dinosaur Jr. and grunge got better as it aged.

I always like discovering bands that were precursors of bigger bands. This is grunge about four years too early. Little Fury Things immediately made me think of Nirvana. SludgeFeast immediately made me think of Soundgarden. The main dings against this album are a bit too much noise for my taste and I'm generally not a fan of slacker singing. I'd call it a 3.5 - I feel like I should round up to recognize that they were ahead of the curve, but between sloppy playing, slacker singing, and too much noise, I've got to go with the 3. Favorite tracks: Little Fury Things, SludgeFeast.

Kinda raw, but like raw carrots rather than raw cake batter

Very surprised. PROS Guitar melody Of the time Bright Flow CONS Not much diversity

It was an interesting album. Some good songs on there. I'd say 2.5 - I will round up.

Not bad!

Supremely average

It's okay, don't have much to say

I have not heard of this band or album before. I can't say I recall hearing any of these songs either! Enjoyed the rhythm and music but found the vocals hard to listen to. Glad to have been able to take a listen though!

This is one of those classic albums that despite being good I never really liked like other people do, people swear by this being the best noise rock or lo fi indie thing but personally it never hit for me. Some nice songs but ultimately feel forgettable after a while, not helped by the lo-fi-ness not really complementing the music, it moreso neuters it sometimws (sludgefest). I also don't care for J Mascis as a singer even if his skills moreso lie in his guitar playing. All in all a fine record but not one I like still

Is this grunge? I don't know. Kinda cool.

It’s decent. Not transformative or groundbreaking, but a good album. 3/5 Might listen again

Never heard before. Bits I liked and will probably return to. Bits that were a bit less good. Sounded like Sonic Youth but more low fi.

i was going to give it a 4 but then it really lost me in the end

I really wanted to like this and I quite enjoy the soundscape, the guitar sounds were cool and the drudgyness was enjoyable. The singer sounded like an Drunk version of Bernard sumner - which again I quite enjoyed... But I just wasn't taken by any of the tracks. Nothing really stayed with me. I was intrigued by the cure cover but it felt a little too similar to the cure's version just with dinosaur Jr's guitar sounds so wasn't quite the gateway I to enjoying it I hoped for. I'd love to find a song or two by them that I loved, that might lead me on to getting into the rest of their catalogue, but it didn't happen on this listen.

If doing dinosaur sounds with your guitar was a concept for a band.

= the Beatles

This is about as “dishevelled” as music gets but I like it! I’ve loved the track Freak Scene for decades and they did a fab cover of Show me the Way that I can’t find anywhere.

Don't love it as much as the 90s and 2000s revivalist DJr, but still decent.

Not bad. Didn’t hate. I’d heard of the band, but didn’t know any songs. Fine to listen to.

I guess it's pretty good noise rock for something that came out in 1987. Still noise rock, though. 2.7

This sort of became background noise after a while. Not to say I can't appreciate the sound they have for the late 80's. This sound is really reminds me of the early-mid 90's with grunge rocks. They were likely early influencers of this sound, but I also don't think they did it best. So in the overall world of music I can see how it is influential, but nothing about it amazes me today.

Ear splitting rock and roll! This is hardcore 👍

flinke cafe rock

Why not

first listen it's alright, remarkably short

Yeah I mean it’s gotta start somewhere right??

An alright album, I liked lungs the most.

If I was the singer for a band, this is what it would sound like. Shameful they’ve got this singer because he really brings the band down. Vocals are so limited and bland. The guitars sound great, but his voice…

It's pretty good, the instrumentals are surprisingly nice.

Solid length. Started off strong, but not too many great songs afterwards. The Just Like Heaven cover was interesting, not what I was expecting.

I liked the loud guitars and driving rhythm, but I didn’t care for the drawling vocals one bit. “regarded as one of the greatest and most influential albums in alternative rock.” - what a damning indictment of an entire genre. To be fair, it was better than I feared it would be!

I liked some of the guitar sounds on this Album, but the singing wasn't the best. Nothing really grabbed me. It's quite short, which always helps. I did listen to their two covers on the bonus tracks, which probably bumped the rating up a little.

Good instrumentals, okay vocal work. Overall just alright.

-cool album!! sounds sort of an interesting middle ground between noise rock and early grunge -maybe I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as some people just because a lot of the music wasn’t as memorable, maybe I need to relisten… some absolutely phenomenal songs on here tho, what they can do with a guitar is very impressive -Favorites are Kracked, The Lung, and Raisans

Unfortunately yes. 3.5

You!! Lost and lonely YOU!! Not their best record but possibly the Greatest Cover Song Ever.

J Mascis has a monopoly on being J Mascis. And he uses it for good.

45 seconds in and this is not the Dinosaur Jr. I thought I was getting. They definitely sound like a Pixies cover band. There is such a thing as too much distortion and they found it on the end of Little Fury Things. This is like the original college radio band. These guys took a little bit from everything before them, punk, metal, early alternative. The Lung is the first song that reminds me of Feel the Pain. Since they were contemporaries, I wonder if these guys or The Pixies think the other one totally ripped them off. These guys are like a cross between The Pixies and The Flaming Lips. The Pixies ripped them off! They were both at UMass Amherst but Dinosaur Jr. came first! Adam Duritz heard this album and thought he could make pop music with the same voice. Covering The Cure's Just Like Heaven? It works!

Interesting overall, I'll listen to them again one day

I saw them once and it was the most excruciatingly loud thing I've ever experienced, so I played this very quietly. It had its moments, but I can see why they lean on volume. (And the Cure cover was a treat.)

I'm torn on this one. It's pretty all over the place but it's a vibe, especially when they get all rocky.

already had one of these songs on my playlist

Surprisingly, I kind of liked this one. At least I thought it was okay until they came to the song Paledo, where they went all “revolution nine”. I think maybe if I listened to this some more, it might grow on me, but first impressions lead me to give this one 3 stars. Probably doesn’t excite me enough to listen to it again though.

Not bad. I don't think it will stick with me much, but I can appreciate it for the time.

Appreciated the wall-of-noise sound, the fuzz, the grunge, and the style switch-ups. Weak vocals, and a lot of nuance I’m sure I missed on a distracted listen.

This is an album I have to listen to when my wife isn't in the car or room. It's noisy, busy, and most of the songs don't have a clearly defined structure. Still, there's some redeeming qualities here. I didn't find it as melodic and captivating as the last Dinosaur Jr. album I listened to (and I'm not quite sure we need more than one Dinosaur Jr. album on this list), but it's entertaining.

Some decent grungy stuff on here. Not sure I would listen again, but quite enjoyed it.

I’ll be this shit would go so hard at The Bronze.

This is #day240 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... speaking of the American alternative rock/indie rock scenes, I've always loved Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo. The Pixies come to mind as well, though perhaps not as much. For some reason, Dinosaur Jr. never made it onto my radar. But listening to You're Living All Over Me, you can hear how it influenced the grunge explosion just a couple of years later, as well as shoegaze. The music is loud and dissonant, and what's interesting is how the vocals manage to stay melodic despite the chaotic backdrop. I can also pick up traces of post-hardcore and maybe some emo, which I don't mind. Still, in the end, I'd probably rather revisit one of the bands I mentioned above. This is a strong 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day241.

Day453 - i was gonna complain about the sloppiness and garage band feel to it but the more i listened the more i liked it

The music behind the vocals is worthy of headbanging, but not a huge fan of the singer

Previously rated: Bug (3/5) ********************** This one started out promising with some good guitar and drums. The vocals were passable. But there's too much stuff that's just non-musical noise, and the disinterested vocals started to get on my nerves. The bonus track, a cover of Just Like Heaven wasn't great. Another take it or leave it album from these guys.

This was cool. Some annoying screeching as though.

An interesting album- I had never heard of Dinosaur Jr. A post-punk, pre-grunge fusion. Overall not really for me but there were a few parts I found myself rocking out to. I can see how this album was influential to other artists. 2.5 to 3 / 5

Too skreetchy to give anything over 3 ⭐ Favorite track - In a Jar

I'm pretty conflicted on this album. It sometimes is really good but at other times it is screaming nonsense. I'll give it a 3 as it clearly was influential and has some decent songs but definitely has some stinkers.

An interesting listen. The mix and production often sounds like ass, but it was very clearly ahead of its time and hugely influential on the decade that would follow. Great melodies and riffs, questionable vocals. As an outsider with zero nostalgic attachment, pretty solid.

Enjoyed listening to this album. Favourite track is Little Fury Things 3/5

Pretty cool but can be very noisy at times.

I don’t remember this band or this album at all. But I liked it. I feel certain it should have been in my wheelhouse during my college years. But they might not have really hit until a few years later when I was in the throes of life.
