Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Interesting because I have never heard of this band before, and it is a decent album. It feels very 90s and I appreciate it, but I am also not a huge 90s fan
electrony
Not a fan. Boring and repetitive.
Incredibly inoffensive, yet entirely forgettable elevator music.
eh, okay
It's okay. Almost an hour of drum and bass that never really deviates. Probably would be better if listen to at a party or something. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again
Pleasant sounding I guess. Just not for me
I guess? <shrug>
Every song is the backing track to the post-break-up-sad-sack-montage in a 90s rom com. That moment when we pan between the love interests being sad walking the streets of NYC but not seeing the fall foliage because they're heartbroken.
Pretty boring EDM.
The girl is alright. Everything else isn’t. 2/5 8/6/26
Well, it's not an exciting collection of songs.
Wasn't a fan then, not a fan now. Music for dinner parties where no-one hears the music.
Better than the Idlewild, but that's not saying much. Mostly boring album.
No standouts
If you've heard any drum and bass house music in your life, then you've already heard this
Was kind of bored by the third song.
This reviewer put it best: "Perfect for when you want to feel what it was like to try on jeans at the Gap or Banana Republic in the late '90's." This is generic European pop-rock/sophisti-pop. I strongly disliked it living in Europe in the 90s and I strongly dislike it now. The fact that there are two albums by this band just goes to show how the book author had severely rose-tinted glasses. (Unknown is whether they are red or white roses.)
not for me
I remember when this came out I thought this was so innovative and cool. But as I started listening to more jungle and drum and bass I realized that this real light. Tracey Thorne can sing but the production was just kind of okay. I listened today and was disappointed.
This music style is just not for me. I can't imagine putting this on to listen to it on a random Tuesday. It's definitely 90's club music.
Her voice is good, that's it.
I actually rlly like the 1st song, but the rest of the album doesn't do anything for me. I think she has a nice voice tho
This pair always look as if they’ve just finished listening to one of their own interminably drab records.
dudette
I didn’t love this. The songs ran together and just never worked for me.
90s chill trance was cool this is a little mainstream to be anything more than average. The album cover is great though
Feels like prime 1990. The beats are energizing enough to listen through though.
This is the ninth album by English duo Everything But the Girl. The music is electronica/pop. None of the tracks were familiar to me, and nothing was memorable. I felt that on most tracks the singing was incompatible with the electronica backing. The album was well-produced, perhaps it’s only redeeming quality.
Chill music. Gives me the feeling like I'm in a clothes store or hold music. It's got a vibe to it that's good but it's not groundbreaking in any way. It sounds like AI music. the main issue with this album is it's 52 minutes of 4 minute long songs that do nothing with their run time This would be a 1 without the vocals Bored 2
I’m done. I quit. I was going to wait till my 500th album to throw in the towel but I’m dropping out at 478. Since I’m halfway through I can state that the author’s taste in music is pretty fucking terrible. The bulk of the albums here are average at best with so many forgettable crappy albums. Yes, I’ve found some hidden gems but for every album that I love there are 20 that are awful. I was hoping over time that that ratio would change but it hasn’t. I love finding new music and I’m really successful at it and do it weekly. I don’t need to subject myself to a bad album a day anymore. I’m sparring myself from this torture from now on. As for this album? Well if I was deaf and got a surgery to get cochlear implants and this was playing when the doctor turned them on, I’d ask for him to turn them off. The singer is talented but the music has the depth, color, and strength of a wet cardboard box.
Not bad but got super repetitive and her voice started to annoy me (this was how I felt on the third song) End opinion - not a fan but wish I was. I feel like some people might really really like this but there was just something missing for me. I was very happy when it ended. I feel like her voice is a big part of the band’s success but there was something about it that I didn’t like
I find myself mesmerized by my generic windows wallpaper while listening to this. This is the stock desert landscape with a single tree of music. It sounds like Le Chateau in the mall in 1997 while I wait for my girlfriend to return pants. It combines my two least favourite types of music; lo-fi beats and quiet storm R&B. Painful but palatable. Low 2.
Not my type of music but entertaining good sound and well executed production
Okay, it seems okay, but would I have been happy to die before I heard this? To be honest, yes. Mellow. I am chilling.
Ugh, I don't know. It's fine. I feel like this might be cool music for a certain kind of party or a scene in a movie, but actively listening to it? Meh. I don't know why I'm giving it two stars. it could be a three. i guess this is my protest vote
Well, it's better than the other EBTG album on here. This had sundowner vibes, but just is not very good. I did not enjoy.
Honestly I was super bored I’m sorry this isn’t my kind of weird guy folky twee music I’ll stick to belle and Sebastian
Clearly a marmite album. Didn't do much for me, got rather bored listening to it. Each song about the same subject, and not the most exciting of music. Overall, not a bad album in the sense of the music, but really nothing to write home about. And a must listen to? Not really sure about that.
Everything but this album... I mean, it’s ok, but I’m hearing wounded now.
Mellow and easy listening, bits of new age. 2
This album put me to sleep twice. Not good.
Dansmusik från 90-talet med lite DnB. Inte riktigt min grej. Var helt OK en eller ett par låtar men sedan blev det tjatigt och ointressant, dock ej dåligt utfört. Inget jag återvänder till.
If my house used as much energy as this LP exudes I’d be rich.
Not sure why this is here. It's not awful, but are there even two Beyonce albums on this list? Hmm. 2.
Bland
I love EBTG but this is something like my fourth favorite album of theirs, surprised to see it on this list
On the last album from this band that I came across here I said that it all sounds like the background music played in a women's clothing store, it's just enough to be considered music but not enough to distract people from spending. This album is more of the same, I feel like I should be browsing flouncy blouses and fancy blazers. It induces extreme lethargy of the mind.
Never heard of album or band. Low expectations based on name of band and genre. Cool production on before today. Much more electronic than pop. Lyrics are fine. Second song is basically the same. Very electronic. Very 90s. Good production again tho. Single is ok too. Just nothing special so far. I think this one is the best tho. Much better songwriting on the heart remains a child. Ironically the production is just fine. Good acoustic guitar. Walking wounded is more of the same. I didn’t realize that there were so many electronic groups creating basically the same sounds at the same time in the 90s. Nothing abt this album stands out so far. Piano riff is cool on this one. Cool production again on flip side. Nothing else special abt it. Apple Music ass beat on big deal. This song sucks. Too much going on with the production, nothing going on with the vocals. Mirror ball is similar to heart remains a child. Better singing and more poppy. Not a bad song. I don’t like good cop bad cop. Production is good I guess but just dated. Like I said before it’s just another 90s “electronic” album. Put that genre in there with early 2000s “alt/indie” as the worst types of music. I’m ready for this to be done, it’s very clearly JAA (just another album). Last two songs could be amazing and it’s not cracking a 3 due to the monotony of the first 75% of the album. I like the wrong remix better than the original but it’s still just an ok song. Not sure which version of walking wounded I like better, both don’t do it for me. 2/5 for trying, it wasn’t horrible but there was absolutely 0 specialness to any song. Don’t waste your time unless you love electronic music.
I didn't remember I already heard an album of theirs on this challenge. This album is so repetitive and background music. The songs sound the same even if they are well produced. Many bands would deservedly be on this list but they aren't so I don't think this band deserve 2 albums here.
Music nice. Vocal no.
Smooth dance pop that does little for me. Just not for me.
2.5
this sounds like elevator music. elevator music from the elevator at calvin klein in the 90s, but elevator music
Insubstantial. Thought I was listening to Sade at first but sadly I wasn't.
I am really sorry for offending whoever keeps putting their albums in the 1001 list, but it’s not just “…The Girl” that’s missing. The list of what this is Everything But… could include Interesting, Noteworthy, Boundary-Pushing, Suitable For This List etc. etc. etc.
Nothing wrong with and it has a chill lowkey vibe, just nothing too special either.
I tried to like this, I really did. The first couple tracks I felt like I could buy-in to the sofisti-pop sound, but by the end of the album the relentless synth dance beat that caries through every song burned a hole in my head as I waited patiently for this album to be over. It's not bad, and in small doses I actually kind of get it, but I just can't be won over by a whole album of this.
I’ve never heard of this artist, which isn’t surprising as I’m not from the UK and this feels like a “you had to be there in the 90s” kind of artist. The first track, Before Today, was actually pretty interesting and I kind of dig the drum track in it. Unfortunately, it’s followed up by just an awfully boring, 4-on-the-floor electronic dance track and then slips into some awfully boring easy listening music. There are some interesting beats and electronics that appear from time to time, like on Flipside, but nothing that made me think that this was an album that really needed to be heard before you die.
Having listened to their earlier work now, I'm not sure whether I appreciate the ballsiness of cashing in on what they knew was popular based on that remix of 'Missing' becoming a hit, or if it was just the zeitgeist doing it's thing - or maybe a bit of both? Either way, going for a consistent mildly trip hop sound is definitely better than the 80s burblings of their earlier album - but they're still taking advantage of the gimmicks of the time so it still manages to sound pretty dated in places (Flipside and Mirroball esp.) Her voice is nice, but not enough to stop me from grimacing over a whole album of the same dated 90s sad sack music.
so 90s pop, thumpy, synthy, british, etc.
Ugh
I liked her voice. That’s about the only positive thing I can say.
Very mediocre, nothing about this is novel (or has been novel), interesting or controversial. It’s massive attackish but meh.
Nice voice and musically chilled, but likely to send into a coma if you listen to it more than once.
Individual tracks are ok, but listening to a whole of this music is a bit boring, for me. The singer has a good voice. I found the drum and bass beat a bit repetitive and slightly annoying at times.
Buf q aburrido
Excellent voice, didn't like the material
I made it as far as the song "Wrong" before I thought "this sounds like whatever group made that 'and I miss you like the deserts miss the rain' song" …and I was right - it’s called "Missing", from 1994's Amplified Heart. That song was pounded into my brain by some tv commercial for a compilation album that I had to sit through almost constantly at one point in the 90s. The 90s loved trying to sell you something with a 1-800 number and a TV commercial. Anyway, this whole album is not all that different from that song; maybe less interesting. For a group called Everything But The Girl, they seem pretty hyper focused on putting the girl front and center and not doing ANYthing else even remotely interesting that might risk distracting you from her. I considered abandoning it 1/2 way through, but stuck it out til the last song just so I could say I won. I've spent this whole review talking about a song that's not even on the record, so maybe I’ll save my stars for whenever I probably have to listen to that album.
Just not much here for me, not actively bad but didn't grab me at all. There was an occasional groove I'd enjoy but it would never go anywhere interesting.
It isnt the worst brit house music ive heard on this list but its pretty damn boring. The fact ive got 250 albums remaining out of the 1089 and this band has at least 1 more album for me to listen to has me sighing
Emo electronica from Britain’s favourite Hull duo (next to Rod and Emu). Thorn has a singularly excellent voice but I could do without the squiggly 90s trip pop beats
Highlights: ---------------------- Lowlights: --------------------- Not a lot going on here. Just very boring.
This is really lame and boring. Can't put it better than the other reviewer who described it as music from the Gap changing room in 1997.
Ben Watt doing a Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor impression here. Tunes boring, but forgettable.
It’s fine. A little derivative of Massive Attack and Portishead which I prefer.
Soooo emo 90s. Not for me, but not terrible.
worse portishead
Nothing sums up this piece of shit list more than picking the album of a 90s one hit wonder band that doesn’t have the fucking one hit wonder on it
I’ve not much to say about this. It’s chilled but there’s something missing that would keep my attention
Look, it's fine. The production is a bit too clean for my taste, and the theme is depressing, full of pining. Makes me think of a rainy grey London day. Before Today has popped up on my Spotify algorithm before but I tend to skip it. Has some moments, but overal: not my thing
Not a fan of these guys per se... I suppose it's not bad. I am really not a fan of this style of pop/alt(?) music.
So the way they created this album is that he created the beats and the bassline and then she sang over it. First the beats are quite boring. I mean, he chose some drum n base beats, but they are not so interesting, and then what she sang over it was also not innovative. It's not good songwriting, it's flat songs. The way this worked with Lamb, for instance, the beats are more interesting, and for singing and songwriting it's way better, so I have no idea why this is on this list, because it's just bland.
Everything but the ability to finish this album. 90s chill house was a strange genre. Perfect for department stores and not much else.
This is ok. Definitely a time capsule
This really was a snooze
Not much here for me to latch on to. Pleasant enough. Singing was good, but each song sounded to me the same and pretty bland.
almost techno. singing? all over.
Couldn't wait for it to be over… I had heard that this list was heavy with late 1990s brit pop and dance and this is prime example.
It was cool and her voice is amazing but not something I would listen to again
Similar to their other album on this list, it's ok, very chill, can play in the background nicely, but wouldn't be too exited by it either. Vocals are excellent though.
Yet another Fountainebleu Miami Beach lobby / bathroom / elevator / off hours pool area soundtrack. How many albums like this are on this list? Fine for its intended purpose I suppose but not something I enjoy when doing my things. Meh. 2/5
Super average stuff wasn’t really loving it by the end. 2.5/5
Not really a fan of this synth pop kinda stuff.
Some bangers but meh
Unbelievably meh, production was decent
Wasn’t feeling this one, Bob
Un estilo así rollo Alanis Morrissette con cosillas electrónicas que no me mola mucho. Representa a su época.
Gentle and smooth, underpinned by a dash of heartbreak, and I enjoy the minimalist approach. On paper I feel like I should love this record, but falls just short. I think I have a new soundtrack for bedroom sexy time tho
easy to listen to. liked it, but left me wanting their top hit track. atmosphere is vibey, 90s rave.
its okay i dont think this is their best album
I've come to accept that this is not my music
There is one redeeming quality here: The beats reminded me of the Nintendo 64 game "Bomberman Hero", so it wins bonus points for stroking my nostalgia chord. Favorite Track: "Single".
This has nothing for me.
not what I was expecting! also not for me unfortunately
Nothing going on here appeals to me
I found this extremely boring and repetitive, but it wasn’t unpleasant to listen to.
I like quite a few Everything But The Girl albums, none of which are on this list because why choose music that is actually interesting, am I right?
My cool mates loved this album and I thought it was a load of tedious old balls.
Like Portishead, I just found slow and quiet trip hop beats with whispy vocals a bit boring. The Wikipedia entry which notes one of the genres as "downbeat" is right in more ways than one. A couple of songs picked up a bit (like Wrong) but nope. Mostly boring, sorry. Missing is a great song and I do seem to notice a pattern on this list of picking albums without the big hit...
Apparently, we've already had another album by Everything but the girl. My review then was " A lot of albums get 3s since they just pass me by without leaving an impression. This did leave an impression." Ironically, I can't remember listening to that album for the life of me. I found this album quite boring, like a lesser version of Portishead. I felt very 90s but not in a particularly good way. Not sure when or why I would want to listen to this. The vocals are pretty good though. Strong 2.
I’m not sure how essential this is.
Music for really bored housewives who have given up.
Bit dire and monotonous.
First song comes on and I think, alright, not bad, maybe three stars. Then every song on the entire album sounds the same. So so so monotonous. Maybe I will add the word so 20 more times so you can share my pain.
phantogram of the 90's time is a flat circle
I suppose the sole reason of this album being here is to show that they can make boring music in a whole nother genre too
NOT THEM AGAIN.
Langweilig und klingt wie eine Kopie von Sade.
It may not be Good… but it’s Fine
i enjoyed and was surprised by their other album on this list (Idlewild), but Walking Wounded didn’t do much for me. i think i have electronica fatigue lol
This is one of the albums of all time.
Åh nej, jag vet inte vad det var med den här musiken men jag blev så stressad. Och när jag egentligen lyssnade på vad det var så kändes den inte stressig nånstans. Egentligen nice bakgrundsmusik.
A bit too lowkey for me
Not really a fan, just couldn’t really find anything that interesting in it.
A very drab affair! Struggled to find any song that was not run of the mill pop. Her voice is good though.
I'd be quite happy to not get a single other 90s electronica album on here.
Fine but boring
Just fine. Forgettable and likely not an album I'd listen to again
Seemed fine but not for me.
Ultimate elevator music. I have no idea why this is on the list.
Everything but me
It was very 90s
Feels like visiting the adult version of the 90s I never got to experience. Pretty bland on its own merit though
I liked the drums but got bored
I was in mall yesterday and 3 different trendy stores had music that sounded just like this.
It's like the night at the museum third film. Very easy to experience, but why would anyone do that ? I think everyone would survive never hearing this. Mostly boring, with songs that all sound the same.
2.5 - Meh
I really do like some of their work a lot. This did nothing for me.
Not my thing
90's grocery store ass album.
Better than I expected for the genres listed, still not amazing.
Wrong
A god-awful time in music. Feels like a lot of these artists were scrambling in the dark trying to appear modern and “with-it” - adding random electronic elements, bleeps and bloops and breakbeats - desperately wanting to be like Björk, Portishead or whatever. As if that wasn’t bad enough, you have every other artist remixing each other’s mediocre compositions - adding even more electronic shit to the pile.
One of the tracks is called The Heart Remains a Child but I’ve always found Everything but the Girl a bit too grown up. Tracey Thorn has a great voice but they went from making tasteful pop to tasteful dance without ever sounding that excited about it. I just want them to put a bit of oomph into it.
nich so spannend
Bleh. This is just so boring to me. I liked the song Flipside which brings this one up a bit. Just absolute nothing music.
i did not enjoy, nwat my type shi
Ok, nothing interesting here. One can listen to it but flows by without any special highlights.
2.5/5
having this on in the background was sort of okay but when i was actively listening to it, it sounded like one long song
Everything But The Girl nothing but mediocre songs. Why is this band on here, let alone twice. The female singer's voice is nice, but far from amazing or super interesting. The only track that was somewhat intriguing to me was Single, but only because it reminded me of George Michael's Safe, though even then the latter is a superior song to the former. Just another waste of a spot on this list.
Quite monotonal.
Very uninteresting. Pretty much everything sounded the same to me and could not keep my attention at all. I feel like if I hadn’t distracted myself and tuned out the sound, I probably would’ve been bored out of my mind. 2/5
This was alright, the woman reminded me of the XX
Eh. Bar rock.
This was really boring. How many albums that are exactly like this are going to be on this list? I've always said the 90's had the worst music and this is just confirming that.
I swear the author of this list has the most boring basic electronic picks coming out with only the lukewarmest of beats. The vocals were alright though
Euro club elevator music
Pleasant to listen to, won’t be putting any of those songs on again.
2/5
Ça me fait penser aux coins de rubber qu'on met sur les meubles pour pas que les bébés s'ouvrent le crâne. 2.49 étoiles
Kinda boring but light
ave had listened to this a few times - and whilst its a pleasant and easy listen very little of it stuck with me. Tracey Thorns' vocals are distinctively haunting and really carry the album with the backing mostly trip hop by numbers. Quite telling that its the remixes that tend to bring the EBTG tunes to life. Fav song: Single.
How do they have TWO albums on this list? Admittedly his is the better one but for me, neither has a place
Within 10 seconds I could tell you the year this was made. 2.5/5
I like the title track and "Big Deal" but everything else was just fine. Very good vocals though.
Didn't like them in the 90's and still not a huge fan. But objectively, it's not bad music, just not my thing.
This was better with an EDM beat to it. Didn't need a full album of it.
2+
Kommer nog aldrig spela den igen.
Just fine, not particularly memorable. A bit beige..
This feels like the sixth EBTG album we’ve been served up, but it looks like it’s only the second. Bleh. Not. For. Me.
Coffee shop music
Before Today 2.2 Wrong 2.3 Single 2.3 The Heart Remains a Child 2.7 Walking Wounded 2.2 Flipside 2.4 Big Deal 2 Mirrorball 2.1 Good Cop Bad Cop 2 Wrong (Todd Terry remix) 2.3 Walking Wounded (Omni Trio remix) 2 Score: 2.227272727
Feels like music you'd hear while shopping at the JCPenney in the 90s.
Interesting sound for a bridge album from 90s pop to indie pop
Things that should have stayed in the 90’s: -Furbys -The Clintons -Frosted Tips -Your Boyfriend’s Dallas Cowboy Fandom -Kid Rock -This Album
Dreamy and hypnotic. But nothing that pushes this above every other band that sounds the same. 2/5
Ok album a couple really good tracks (Single, Flipside). But other than Tracey Thorn’s soothing vocals, there is much here that would distinguish this from similar late 90s electro pop
Perfect music for a mid-40s divorcee wanting to feel like she's engaged in soul-searching during a spa day; or for the soundtrack of a movie about a group of mid-40s divorcees wanting to feel like they're engaged in soul-searching during a spa day. (Two stars because, while the songs remain vacuous, the production is considerably better than that of Idlewild.)
I like her voice, and most of the chill music, but there's all this random drum and base thrown in, which I hate, and I think it ruins what could be a really nice and relaxing album.
Another example of the bias towards UK artists. Apparently there is another album from EBTG on the List. Probably the one N. America would be most familiar. This isn't a bad album but it's not the most outstanding electronica around.
Reminds me of something from an action movie soundtrack, but not a good one.
Basically the same as Scritti Polliti, in that it is so inoffensive it's actually offensive. I've had three totally bland albums in a row, and can't really think of much to say about any of them. Come on Project! Do better than this.
Conjures intense memories of early 2000s weekend afternoons when mum was doing chores and had the 80kg CRT tv blasting the music channel
This is nice
This was fine. It got better as it went. I am not sure it needs to be here, but I'm not mad I had to listen to it, at least.
2.5
Liked this as much as I did there other album. Not very much…this one was slightly better
Not big into drum and bass… this one felt pretty forgettable.
🧟
An electronica album with chill two step and bass and drum beats, a genre of music that is not my jam. When I’m in the mood to listen to electronica, I gravitate to more powerful and energetic beats typical of house. This explains why I couldn’t remember ever hearing of Everything but the Girl, despite the band having chart topping hits in the US. This album had beautiful moments and the singer’s voice complimented the underlying music, but for me that did not save the album from being boring. I’m not convinced that this album would be on the list if the author was not British. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with this, but I didn’t hear anything particularly groundbreaking or influential in the album. Although, as mentioned, I’m far from an expert in this genre. Definitely not an album I’ll be revisiting in the future.
Music for a 1990s coffee shop. Mild and inoffensive.
First one I really don't know about & what to expect. Sounds like maybe it was a heavy influence for mainstream pop around the time, but this feels cooler and more sincere. Probably harsh to say a poor imitation massive attack. What's up with the katakana on the album cover? Superdry style?
Pleasant but monotonous; boring
Sounds like Beth Gibbons singing.
second album from these folks and, man, i hate to say it. this really does nothing for me. the best songs on here are fine, i guess. the worst songs are pretty boring. the music is one part subdued techno, one part subdued pop, and is entirely subdued. i just wish one of the facets here was more interesting, it would have held my interest a lot longer. on a pure technical scale, there's nothing wrong here, i guess. it just feels like the music the clothing stores my mom would drag me to when i was a kid. i just don't really appreciate the vibe a whole lot.
I've heard this one many times before. The best I can say is it just exists. It's not exactly bad, but not particularly good either. It's an easy one to ignore when they play it overhead at work.
Eh ...
Совсем слабо и скучно
Found this very boring. Nice voice but minimal instrumentation and all sounds the same to me.
Crap
This felt like the soundtrack to Challengers if it wasn't horny.
Captivating voice but musically less interesting
1. today - 2 2. uurong - 1.5 3. zingle - 1.5 4. heart - 1 5. uualking - 2 6. flipzide - 2 7. deal - 2 8. mirror - 9. cop - 10. uurong - 11. uuounded -
Can’t stand her voice
Yeah one hit and its not on here
Inoffensive. In a bad way. 90s blandness.
Just lounge music
meh
Feels like the inspiration that Dido took to make her biggest hits, but I don't think it worked for EBTG. The remixes were cooler than the earlier tracks. Otherwise this album was not my cup of tea 3/10
Besides "Wrong" for me only 90's background music in a shopping mall.
I don’t have much against the overall sound of the album, but it was so mellow it became wallpaper. Rating: 2.5
Honestly not bad for the 90s but incredibly boring for 2025. I'm not against chill electronic music but chill electronic music now days at least has more depth.
Everything But The Girl sounds like they should be a twee indie band based on the name alone. However they are another electronic Brit band with a female vocalist. Honestly between Goldfrapp, Portishead and EBTG they all blur together.
Music with no soul. I can hear the midi instruments as they beep and click. It's redeeming feature is that it is largely inoffensive and recedes to the background.
# 449 : 02/04/2025 : it's not bad…. It's not good. Nothing special. Very ordinary and quite forgettable. Probs won't go back to this.
It's just a bit for the background.
I kept trying to convince myself that this wasn't that bad until I started to get towards the end. I lost it.
This was not what I was expecting. Slow chill techno popish. Not awful. But just more like background music to me than anything I’d ever choose to listen to. 2.75
Channel 5 midnight casino background music vibes. Place your bets. Big_Les69 is the top virtual roulette earner tonight.
Felt very blah to me.
Very 90’s British.
Flipside was good, but probably just because it sounded a little different than everything else on here. It all just blends together.
This started out somewhat promising but went downhill quickly. I liked this better than Idlewild, but it was a very low bar. It was like the worst parts of Ace of Base and Dido came together to make an album. "Mirrorball" is a good song, but everything else was a struggle to get through.
As boring as I expected
I never really liked EBTG at the time and a listen through this has reminded me of why. That slightly-jungly beat just batters on for the whole thing and goes nowhere interesting. Tracey Thorn has a decent voice on her but I just remember seeing their music videos on a loop in the old VH1/MTV days and thinking she just looked so miserable all the time. I don't really see the ambient cool trip-hop type connections some people seem to be finding here. Nowhere close to Massive Attack or Portishead levels.
90-s background music. Enige pluspuntje is dat ik de Todd Terry remix van Missing aan de party playlist heb kunnen toevoegen. 5/10 Highlights -
Chill triphop that is well produced and with a great vocalist. And incredibly boring, I might add. Will not listen again unless I decide to spend some time at a posh coffee house
Dance meets slow music. Not my cup of tea
🎧Whoever described this as the soundtrack of “trying on jeans at the Gap or Banana Republic in the late 90s” hit the nail on the head.
Boooooring.
Everything But Unfortunately Their One Good Song
It’s 90s electronica. Shocked how popular this genre got, there’s just not enough for it to stand out for me.
I liked the electronics at points. It was ok
She has a great voice, reminiscent of Sade to a degree, but it seemed at odds with the synth. Those vocals deserve to be supported by strings, a piano, or at least better electronic accompaniment. What she had may have been pretty cool at the time, but certainly hasn’t held up. Instead it was more of a distraction than support. As a point of reference, when this album ended, Spotify played It Could Be Sweet by Portishead. Along the same vibe that I think they were going for, but a totally different outcome. Everything But the Girl is far less emotive and the instrumentation is more generic, lacking any complexity or interest, resulting in an almost boring experience comparatively.
Not really but thing, but not offensive.
Boring and repetitive. Fine for background music, but even then boring. Next. Tracks that sort of caught my attention: Single (I'd almost call this a "favorite track"), Walking Wounded, Flipside.
meh. Commercial synth-pop
Not for me
This album is the exact sound of walking around a fancy department store at the mall in the early 2000's. Now the question is, do I *want* to listen to music that sounds like an early 2000's store? Nope. Not really.
Blah.
Can’t quite decide if I love it, but I sure do like it!
Better than the other album they had on the list but still manages to be dull as ditchwater.
There are (at least) *two* Everything But The Girl albums on this list. LOL
Voice is nice but doesn’t match with the electronic music. Overall not enjoyable.
Weak sauce.
sounds like romy from xx, nice beats
Too long, too 90s, too electronica
I was thinking this is OK, but it became very repetitive and I was relieved when it ended.
Started to lose interest towards the end, but it wasn't totally awful
It made me bored but didn’t make me annoyed.
I don't know this jsut doesn't sound that good to me. It's also a little late to the party. This could've been made in the 80s easily.
I don’t have a lot to say about this album. So I’ll tell a story about my listening experience. I was about halfway through the record while driving my three-year-old daughter to school. She jumped up during the ride and said “I wanna listen to something else” I said, “me too kid, me too.“ so I put on the Moana soundtrack for the 10,000 time, and that was a nice relief from the album.
报听
generally i like the combination of edm and her voice but on the long run it just annoys me.
Boring
Meh
Found this pretty boring to be honest. Like being on hold at the doctors.
Too long and held on too long to the same things.
Pop. Electronic pop with a bunch of syth. Two things that I don't enjoy. melodies and arrangements are ok. The Heart Remains A Child is good, esprcially the guitar on the left, quite interesting. But overall it's just not so memorable. Well produced, enjoyable when you are in the right mood, but otherwise boring. 2-2.5 i suppose.
Not good. Dated and boring.
It’s okay - I didn’t think I would enjoy it, but here we are, and I think it’s fine. Although I easily get tired of listening to this type of music for too long. That’s also the case here. But in small doses, it’s okay
Not bad but I didn't get it.
When I reviewed Idlewild, I criticized EBtG for writing very similar and boring pop songs. On Walking Wounded they explore a new genre by focusing on downtempo electronica - mainly to prove that they manage to be boring in more than one genre? It’s rather admirable.
Meh
Not my thing but next time I’m on a come down I might give it another spin.
I see what they’re going for here. That whole trip-hop, Zero 7, Groove Armada vibe. And to be honest I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Wouldn’t stick it on again, but I’ve listened to worse albums. Could envision this playing at some beachfront bar on a hungover Sunday, if the holiday was quite lame.
Hard to review this one as I'm not a fan of this type of music. Find it quite boring and one note but don't think it's a bad album. Just not my vibe. Good production and dont mins some of the dnb/triphop beats. Every song sounds the same though. Would go down well at a late 90s dinner party for twats dipping into the beak after the dessert and cafetiere coffee
Insipid and bland
Not too bad. I like her voice. But at the end of the day it's electronica with all its limitations.
2.18
Not aging well.
If I heard this before the advent of lo-fi glitch hop 24 hr streams I think it would have been a truly unique experience but unfortunately this has become a very played out sound.
The percussion was awful. The tiny high hat in your ear till it hurts forced me to skip almost every song.
Sounds like the type of music you'd hear in the queue for Oblivion at Alton Towers Repetitive, they all sounded the same and too long Not for me, thanks 2 ⭐️
I really like Tracey Thorn's voice and some of EBTG's songwriting over the years but late 90s/early 00s polite electronica is so dull. Let's give it some Aphex acid you...
Had never heard of them. They were OK. 2.5 maybe.
Got a lot of respect for this record. I can really appreciate what they were doing and her vocals are insane! Took a bit of getting into. First listen 2.3. Second listen 2.5. So let’s call it 2.4
Another fine, didn’t dislike, didn’t inspire me to pursue more
Honestly often forget about this variety of 90s trancey club music. Not my favorite but decent as background noise. Very randomly and coincidentally I had heard the song Missing by Everything But the Girl on the radio and I swear it’s one of those songs that I know deep down because it was on so many CD infomercials growing up and I still will mess it up if I hear it in the wild
90s chill electronica to be played at the mall. I liked the beats and music especially at first but I found her vocals off-putting and boring. Close to a 3 but I found my mind wandering by the end which probably slides it down to a 2. When Carly pointed out that this band did the song "Missing" (recognizable 90s song of this vibe that we keep missing in music trivia), it all made sense.
Sad really but can’t be bothered to listen to this - the album cover doesn’t make the top 1000 in terms of artwork. Maybe that’s the intention but it sums up the whole feel of the thing.
Somewhat interesting
Very melancholy and I enjoy the spacey feeling of the synths. Just too one note to be more memorable (2.5/5)
Sorry, but there is zero reason why this should be on this list.
Not for me. I suppose I see a version of the world that is clubbing to this stuff.
Not familiar but enjoyed listening.
I'm no musicologist but I'm confident in saying I didn't need to hear *two* Everything But The Girl albums before I die. I slightly prefer this incarnation to their 80s stuff; the electronics and vocals do 'work' together. It's competently made, but it just doesn't make me feel anything.
Inoffensive and not terribly interesting. Some cool moments, and it was nice to hear some drum and bass that actually has a vocalist. But I feel everything that's drum and bass all sounds exactly the same to me, and is not that pleasant to listen to. Still this was better than most I've heard so far. Top tracks: Flipside, Walking Wounded (Omni Trio Remix)
Pretty dull
Wrong
eh, it’s okay. Foot tapping pop, skilled musicians, but it’s just not my jam.
Background music for me, not unpleasant but not my cup of mead so to speak.
Quite interesting. Like flip side the best so far. Some interesting sounds popping in and out Mirror ball is nice
Tycker inte det här är särskilt märkvärdigt.
