A definite Sunday chill album.

Heavy base dance music, but with a nice voice

Intriguing, it's introspective and clubby at the same time. Makes me feel uneasy.

Serenely washes over me. I don't really have any strong feelings for it one way or the other. It's generally pleasant, and I do like the drum programming and sequencing, but it's just kind of "there."

Chill 90s alternative with electronic elements, completely a thing that was of the time and hasn't really come back in any way... yet. Fine, pleasing, but washes over you.

Quite enjoyable. A distinctive sound and some good tracks. Not outstanding though so high 3*

Max said sounded like hotel bar music and I'm inclined to agree. But maybe context is everything and I should listen to it when not in a hotel bar.

I could probably recognize music from Everything But The Girl if I could hear a bit of the vocals, but I don't really KNOW the band. Walking Wounded sounds like it comes from the late 90s electronic scene (ni bien ni mal). There were a couple tracks that tried my patience, but overall I enjoyed this album. I'm still not sure what would make me say, "I need to listen to Everything But the Girl", but I wouldn't run out of the room if someone put on this album or something new from the band.

Fairly decent trip hopish pop. There were some really interesting sounds here that I hear in later Radiohead and Röyksopp, but the delivery is often so bland that it just doesn’t stand out to me.

Pleasant sounds and chill vibes, backed by solid vocals, while great at conveying emotion and setting the mood quickly become same-y and blend into one another, causing the album to feel like it's overstaying its welcome - and that's the original release, not even taking the deluxe edition's additions into account. So in the end while it's something I'd love having on in the backgroudn from time to time, I struggle to see anything too exceptional or distinguishing here at work. Highlights: Before Today, Walking Wounded

Relaxing tracks. Soft vocals and toned down arrangements. Nothing gripping, but a solid record. I quite enjoyed it, but didn't find anything particularly memorable. Highlight: Big Deal

Nie dość że ogólnie to jest jakiś randomowy średniak, to jeszcze słuchało mi się nieprzyjemnie. Nic odkrywczego, nie działa dla mnie nawet jako muzyka w tle.

I found listening to this pretty painless but a lot of the delivery was a little too smooth jazz for my taste. What I picked up of the lyrics seemed pretty well formed.

Following the success of "Missing," the duo devote their shift from sophi-pop to dnb / downtempo, which really matches their style: vocals reminiscent of downtempo classics like Portishead. For anyone missing that style, "Mirrorball" is a great transitional track, like sophi-pop using dnb tools. There's a trend with this album, and maybe for the album as a whole, but several of the tracks are repetitive and feel like they're on a 15 second loop until the last minute or so with some cool instrumental piece. "Flipside" and "Big Deal" are the biggest examples. Meh, I still like the tracks, even if I choose to just listen to their hits. I read Tracey Thorn's Bedsit Disco Queen bio last year and it was pretty good, and am really keen to read her latest one about Lindy Morrison. Her Marine Girls stuff is great but then it all went far too 80s jazz-lite. Then post-Massive Attack's Protection it all went trip hop lite. The sound of young professional dinner parties in the second half of the 1990s. Listening to it now, it's not terrible, just not that interesting and a bit samey song-after-song

This sounds like a very particular type of party in the late '90s.

Well, I have been on a journey with this album today. I had heard the name Everything but the Girl but I really didn't know anything about them. I didn't get a particularly good feeling from the cover art last night. I woke up early to get some work done this morning. I put on my headphones and pressed play. The mellow, danceable beats and smooth vocals were a great accompaniment to my workday. Made it all the way through the album and pressed play again. Still good. And then...I took a walk outside with it and it was much less interesting. Maybe the ear pods I wear when I'm walking give me less bass than my at-home headphones and that was the issue. Maybe the music is better as background than as my main focus. Maybe three times in a day was too much. They'd somehow lost their luster one way or another. Anyway, this is pretty good electronic-pop, but maybe just in small doses.

Interesting and easy listen. Not mind blowing, but good.

Good singing, although Tracy Thorn always seems a little icy and emotionless even though she sings about emotions. The bleeps, break beats and electronics is good and of its time. For 90s/2000s dinner parties alongside Beth Orton's Trailer Park and Zero 7.

Its not a favourite and to me sounds a bit dated

Some absolute bangers on here and a bunch of hidden gems. Production seems a little thin but I guess that could be down to being exposed to much richer mixes in more recent times. Still a lot of fun!

Sade-style jazz-pop smoothness. More electro than Sade, a nice hybrid between Massive Attack trip hop and the smooth Jazz described above. The vocals are gorgeous, but the whole package strikes me as a little soul-less. Could this be the ideal dinner music album? Quite possibly. 3 stars

I know I've heard this before, at least a single or two from it, but can't remember anything about it. Was one of those bands that got a lot of late night rage play in the 90s. Ok yeah electronica, bit of a mix of that kinda scungy UK techno sound but not as rank, and the singer is jazzy. I hate people who describe things as "chill", but it's bang on here. It's not bad, but the entire album is summed up in the first couple of songs and still goes for another 45min. I guess this would be a nice soundtrack to a groovy funky hipster people cafe? tbh I want to give it a 4, but it falls short on holding my interest. 3/5.

17th August 2021 Listened on my phone throughout the day while working. Pleasantly surprised me, I know them for Miss You which is far poppier than this. This is trendy and far more of a beat.

Enjoyed this more than I disliked....make sense?? Some great tracks, but others were not so good.

Her voice is pleasant. I'm not sure I would ever choose to put this on, but good for them. Best track: Wrong

this one really straddles the line between a 2 and a 4. it was electronically innovative, especially for its time and the lyrics really spoke to me but i don't think you could write more sterile melodies if you tried. i guess my scale suggests a 3.

The production and sound design here are amazing, feels super comfy at times, or cerebral at others.

I liked it, kinda soft emo rock. I prefer Savage Garden for sheer pop factor.

That first tune is fucking unreal. Last one too. The rest of it is kind of filler. It sounds like most of it could be used to show the passing of time in Love Actually.

Interesting band name

Was aware of this album when it came out, but wasn’t my bag then…and still not really my thing now either. But I can appreciate its easy listening, smoothed out electronica mellow vibe more than in 1996. Hard to believe this band has two albums on the list though. 2.5⭐️

Okaaay first track hit and I was on board! Loving the breakbeat shit! Then the rest of the album happened and it was painfully boring. Lyrics were often making me cringe. Felt like the sort of off the cuff lyrics you’d hear from a teenager trying to write their first song and not in a charming Majical Cloudz way.

#464/1001. One of the biggest surprises for me about this album was that it is already the 9th studio album by EBTG. Good for them. Hull seems to breed quite a few well established musicians, there is probably something in the water. This album doesn't have the biggest single, it is missing (pun intended) but continues in that style, electronic, trip-hop and acid jazz beats, sounds and rhythms are the deal here and somehow, judging here much later on, it seems a bit overlaid, doesn't it? Like listening to electronic cover versions of sad pop made for "keeping it fresh". Not far from the cheap compilation records where "some of the tracks have been re-recorded by the artist or one or more members of the original group". That's a bit mean, I know. The deluxe album with the 10+ remixes feels like torture. I guess it defines an era or a small slice of one, and I can name many local bands who copied the sound. But my cake has already been eaten.

I think the curator of this list cares more about exceptional vocalists than I do. This ain’t the first time I sat through an otherwise forgettable album that had a very talented front.

I liked the electronic vibes here but for some reason the lyrics were really distracting -- I would have preferred many of these tracks be instrumental, I think

I loved this genre I'm high school. There is some love there still, but as the album went on I grew bored then annoyed with the repetition. I guess the love is lost now

I basically just found this boring. It didn't sound bad, but it didn't manage to make me care at all Standouts - 2/5

I only know these guys for one song, "Missing", which apparently was an light dance remix of the original sophisti-pop sounding track. And it was a major worldwide hit. So they decided to try a more electronic approach on the following album, the album picked for listening today. Or so I've read. I won't argue whether or not the above is selling out or not; maybe it was, or maybe it was a natural progression. What I do know is that this album is very middle-of-the-road electronica-pop, which reminds me a lot of "Missing". And while it's mildly pleasant, it's completely unmemorable. Chill background music at your hipster friend's party. Yawn. So it deserves the most middle-of-the-road rating i can give it, a 2.5/5, and this feels one I'm rounding down, because I felt nothing of note.

This sounds like everything I dislike and everything we’d hear in the following decade. That fast-paced electronic percussion just doesn't work at all. 2 stars.

Boring AF

Only had these the other day! Admittedly, this is a very different style, so I was less annoyed than, say, getting two Bob Dylan albums 3 days apart. It's still competently bland though. Her voice is good enough, just boring innit? Went on a bit. I'll assume their 9 other albums are the same, and I won't bother seeking them out. Edit: my boyfriend seemingly played them all afterwards anyway.

Yeah, nothing particularly great about this. Predictable, uninteresting and uninspiring. Executed well enough, but isn’t going to change any worlds.

Man, 90s electronic music was easy. Just create a sound bed, add a simple beat, and some nice vocals.

I knew I didn't want to listen to this before I hit play. They did nothing for me in the 90's and they remind of a girlfriend who loved them and forced me to "enjoy" them with her, and she sucks too. Let me guess, they're English? BINGO, we have a winner! These guys never did squat over here, one hit and it's not on this album. The title track is unbearable and doesn't stand up well today. Drab music with a terrible god awful drum machine ("Before Today", "Wrong", "Big Deal") that takes all the life out of the songs. She can sing but do I want to hear her sing these songs? No. So robotic and formulaic. Only modest numbers on the listener counts, all of whom live on a large well known island just off of France. Highlight: "Flipside" or "Mirrorball" but both are C+ songs. No hits, no signature song, no legacy in the US at least, you never hear any of this on the radio/streaming. Weak ass shit for people who don't have true musical taste. 2 stars

As Everything But the Girl formed in Hull, my long-time hometown, I feel obliged to like this album Sadly it falls some way short of me feeling I can rave about it. It has decent pop tunes but largely it drifted by without me really connecting to it much less giving me any real reason to see why it is on this list.

Another artist with a nice voice but every song (with an exception of a few) the same with the beat and the synthesizer sounding music. I imagined walking into a hotel bar back in the day, and leaving after two beers cause i felt like I just smoked a pack of cigarettes.

This is what happens when you listen to Dummy and think we can do that. But you dont have the voice, musicianship, production or understanding of what made that album great. All this album did was make me want to go and listen to Portishead and Underworld. In fairness the remix of Wrong was pretty catchy.

I strongly disliked it living in Europe in the 90s and I strongly dislike it now. The fact that there are two albums by this band just goes to show how the book author had severely rose-tinted glasses. (Unknown is whether they are red or white roses.)

I remember when this came out I thought this was so innovative and cool. But as I started listening to more jungle and drum and bass I realized that this real light. Tracey Thorne can sing but the production was just kind of okay. I listened today and was disappointed.

This music style is just not for me. I can't imagine putting this on to listen to it on a random Tuesday. It's definitely 90's club music.

This is the ninth album by English duo Everything But the Girl. The music is electronica/pop. None of the tracks were familiar to me, and nothing was memorable. I felt that on most tracks the singing was incompatible with the electronica backing. The album was well-produced, perhaps it’s only redeeming quality.

Chill music. Gives me the feeling like I'm in a clothes store or hold music. It's got a vibe to it that's good but it's not groundbreaking in any way. I’m done. I quit. I was going to wait till my 500th album to throw in the towel but I’m dropping out at 478. Since I’m halfway through I can state that the author’s taste in music is pretty fucking terrible. The bulk of the albums here are average at best with so many forgettable crappy albums. Yes, I’ve found some hidden gems but for every album that I love there are 20 that are awful. I was hoping over time that that ratio would change but it hasn’t. I love finding new music and I’m really successful at it and do it weekly. I don’t need to subject myself to a bad album a day anymore. I’m sparring myself from this torture from now on. As for this album? Well if I was deaf and got a surgery to get cochlear implants and this was playing when the doctor turned them on, I’d ask for him to turn them off. The singer is talented but the music has the depth, color, and strength of a wet cardboard box.

I find myself mesmerized by my generic windows wallpaper while listening to this. This is the stock desert landscape with a single tree of music. It sounds like Le Chateau in the mall in 1997 while I wait for my girlfriend to return pants. It combines my two least favourite types of music; lo-fi beats and quiet storm R&B. Painful but palatable. Low 2.

Clearly a marmite album. Didn't do much for me, got rather bored listening to it. Each song about the same subject, and not the most exciting of music. Overall, not a bad album in the sense of the music, but really nothing to write home about. And a must listen to? Not really sure about that.

I love EBTG but this is something like my fourth favorite album of theirs, surprised to see it on this list

On the last album from this band that I came across here I said that it all sounds like the background music played in a women's clothing store, it's just enough to be considered music but not enough to distract people from spending. This album is more of the same, I feel like I should be browsing flouncy blouses and fancy blazers. It induces extreme lethargy of the mind.

Never heard of album or band. Low expectations based on name of band and genre. Cool production on before today. Much more electronic than pop. Lyrics are fine. Second song is basically the same. Very electronic. Very 90s. Good production again tho. Single is ok too. Just nothing special so far. I think this one is the best tho. Much better songwriting on the heart remains a child. Ironically the production is just fine. Good acoustic guitar. Walking wounded is more of the same. I didn’t realize that there were so many electronic groups creating basically the same sounds at the same time in the 90s. Nothing abt this album stands out so far. Piano riff is cool on this one. Cool production again on flip side. Nothing else special abt it. Apple Music ass beat on big deal. This song sucks. Too much going on with the production, nothing going on with the vocals. Mirror ball is similar to heart remains a child. Better singing and more poppy. Not a bad song. I don’t like good cop bad cop. Production is good I guess but just dated. Like I said before it’s just another 90s “electronic” album. Put that genre in there with early 2000s “alt/indie” as the worst types of music. I’m ready for this to be done, it’s very clearly JAA (just another album). Last two songs could be amazing and it’s not cracking a 3 due to the monotony of the first 75% of the album. I like the wrong remix better than the original but it’s still just an ok song. Not sure which version of walking wounded I like better, both don’t do it for me. 2/5 for trying, it wasn’t horrible but there was absolutely 0 specialness to any song. Don’t waste your time unless you love electronic music.

I didn't remember I already heard an album of theirs on this challenge. This album is so repetitive and background music. The songs sound the same even if they are well produced. Many bands would deservedly be on this list but they aren't so I don't think this band deserve 2 albums here.

Insubstantial. Thought I was listening to Sade at first but sadly I wasn't.

I am really sorry for offending whoever keeps putting their albums in the 1001 list, but it’s not just “…The Girl” that’s missing. The list of what this is Everything But… could include Interesting, Noteworthy, Boundary-Pushing, Suitable For This List etc. etc. etc.

Nothing wrong with and it has a chill lowkey vibe, just nothing too special either.

I tried to like this, I really did. The first couple tracks I felt like I could buy-in to the sofisti-pop sound, but by the end of the album the relentless synth dance beat that caries through every song burned a hole in my head as I waited patiently for this album to be over. It's not bad, and in small doses I actually kind of get it, but I just can't be won over by a whole album of this.

I’ve never heard of this artist, which isn’t surprising as I’m not from the UK and this feels like a “you had to be there in the 90s” kind of artist. The first track, Before Today, was actually pretty interesting and I kind of dig the drum track in it. Unfortunately, it’s followed up by just an awfully boring, 4-on-the-floor electronic dance track and then slips into some awfully boring easy listening music. There are some interesting beats and electronics that appear from time to time, like on Flipside, but nothing that made me think that this was an album that really needed to be heard before you die.

Having listened to their earlier work now, I'm not sure whether I appreciate the ballsiness of cashing in on what they knew was popular based on that remix of 'Missing' becoming a hit, or if it was just the zeitgeist doing it's thing - or maybe a bit of both? Either way, going for a consistent mildly trip hop sound is definitely better than the 80s burblings of their earlier album - but they're still taking advantage of the gimmicks of the time so it still manages to sound pretty dated in places (Flipside and Mirroball esp.) Her voice is nice, but not enough to stop me from grimacing over a whole album of the same dated 90s sad sack music.

Very mediocre, nothing about this is novel (or has been novel), interesting or controversial. It’s massive attackish but meh.

Nice voice and musically chilled, but likely to send into a coma if you listen to it more than once.

Individual tracks are ok, but listening to a whole of this music is a bit boring, for me. The singer has a good voice. I found the drum and bass beat a bit repetitive and slightly annoying at times.

I made it as far as the song "Wrong" before I thought "this sounds like whatever group made that 'and I miss you like the deserts miss the rain' song" …and I was right - it’s called "Missing", from 1994's Amplified Heart. That song was pounded into my brain by some tv commercial for a compilation album that I had to sit through almost constantly at one point in the 90s. The 90s loved trying to sell you something with a 1-800 number and a TV commercial. Anyway, this whole album is not all that different from that song; maybe less interesting. For a group called Everything But The Girl, they seem pretty hyper focused on putting the girl front and center and not doing ANYthing else even remotely interesting that might risk distracting you from her. I considered abandoning it 1/2 way through, but stuck it out til the last song just so I could say I won. I've spent this whole review talking about a song that's not even on the record, so maybe I’ll save my stars for whenever I probably have to listen to that album.

Just not much here for me, not actively bad but didn't grab me at all. There was an occasional groove I'd enjoy but it would never go anywhere interesting.

It isnt the worst brit house music ive heard on this list but its pretty damn boring. The fact ive got 250 albums remaining out of the 1089 and this band has at least 1 more album for me to listen to has me sighing

Emo electronica from Britain’s favourite Hull duo (next to Rod and Emu). Thorn has a singularly excellent voice but I could do without the squiggly 90s trip pop beats

Look, it's fine. The production is a bit too clean for my taste, and the theme is depressing, full of pining. Makes me think of a rainy grey London day. Before Today has popped up on my Spotify algorithm before but I tend to skip it. Has some moments, but overal: not my thing

Not a fan of these guys per se... I suppose it's not bad. I am really not a fan of this style of pop/alt(?) music.

So the way they created this album is that he created the beats and the bassline and then she sang over it. First the beats are quite boring. I mean, he chose some drum n base beats, but they are not so interesting, and then what she sang over it was also not innovative. It's not good songwriting, it's flat songs. The way this worked with Lamb, for instance, the beats are more interesting, and for singing and songwriting it's way better, so I have no idea why this is on this list, because it's just bland.

Everything but the ability to finish this album. 90s chill house was a strange genre. Perfect for department stores and not much else.

Yet another Fountainebleu Miami Beach lobby / bathroom / elevator / off hours pool area soundtrack. How many albums like this are on this list? Fine for its intended purpose I suppose but not something I enjoy when doing my things. Meh. 2/5

Gentle and smooth, underpinned by a dash of heartbreak, and I enjoy the minimalist approach. On paper I feel like I should love this record, but falls just short. I think I have a new soundtrack for bedroom sexy time tho

There is one redeeming quality here: The beats reminded me of the Nintendo 64 game "Bomberman Hero", so it wins bonus points for stroking my nostalgia chord. Favorite Track: "Single".

My cool mates loved this album and I thought it was a load of tedious old balls.

Like Portishead, I just found slow and quiet trip hop beats with whispy vocals a bit boring. The Wikipedia entry which notes one of the genres as "downbeat" is right in more ways than one. A couple of songs picked up a bit (like Wrong) but nope. Mostly boring, sorry. Missing is a great song and I do seem to notice a pattern on this list of picking albums without the big hit...

bit too mellow for me

Apparently, we've already had another album by Everything but the girl. My review then was " A lot of albums get 3s since they just pass me by without leaving an impression. This did leave an impression." Ironically, I can't remember listening to that album for the life of me. I found this album quite boring, like a lesser version of Portishead. I felt very 90s but not in a particularly good way. Not sure when or why I would want to listen to this. The vocals are pretty good though. Strong 2.

Bit dire and monotonous.

First song comes on and I think, alright, not bad, maybe three stars. Then every song on the entire album sounds the same. So so so monotonous. Maybe I will add the word so 20 more times so you can share my pain.

I was in mall yesterday and 3 different trendy stores had music that sounded just like this.

It's like the night at the museum third film. Very easy to experience, but why would anyone do that ? I think everyone would survive never hearing this. Mostly boring, with songs that all sound the same.

A god-awful time in music. Feels like a lot of these artists were scrambling in the dark trying to appear modern and “with-it” - adding random electronic elements, bleeps and bloops and breakbeats - desperately wanting to be like Björk, Portishead or whatever. As if that wasn’t bad enough, you have every other artist remixing each other’s mediocre compositions - adding even more electronic shit to the pile.

One of the tracks is called The Heart Remains a Child but I’ve always found Everything but the Girl a bit too grown up. Tracey Thorn has a great voice but they went from making tasteful pop to tasteful dance without ever sounding that excited about it. I just want them to put a bit of oomph into it.
