Reviews (page 5 of 8)
I saw them open for Radiohead in 1998 without having heard of them before. It didn’t do much for me then, so this is the first time actually listening to an album from them. But it still didn’t do anything for me, lol.
I couldnt decide if i liked this as much as i thought i would before it started, but it was certainly more than i did when the first proper song started and i couldnt hear anything and had no idea what was going on. Really liked the vibes of some songs but couldn't for the life of me tell you which ones.
I quite like a lot of this and then find a lot of it not quite there. Let’s look at the pros: - I love both the shoe gaze and bluesy elements PLUS the classical elements. More modern rock should have wailing harmonica tracks OR white noise and feedback OR orchestras - when it’s mellow, I’m very zen! - when it’s loud, I’m along for the ride! - sometimes it just becomes very pretty! However, cons: - the man’s voice doesn’t inspire me. Sorry to that man. - the fluctuation between these two genres doesn’t quite hit right for me all the time. There’s better shoegaze and there’s better blues and certainly better classical and you’re not doing a good enough job blending them into something unique in order for me to feel like I couldn’t be listening to someone else do either of them better. I enjoyed my time here, I think. I won’t be back for a while.
3.5
This was real good up until the last track. 17 minutes of mostly noise was not my jam.
Not really my taste in music, but had some elements I enjoyed.
yeah
I wish I could like this album as much as I probably do. Like an art rock shoegaze album should kinda be the sorta thing I’d LOVE, but this sadly doesn’t hit the spot fully. I enjoyed listening to this, but nothing more then surface level stuff interest. Feels like every song has like ONE element from being great.
Pretty vibey. I actually enjoyed quite a bit but can get repetitive
I like the concept and the vibes of the record but there are not many melodies to get hooked on. It's very much all over the place with the ambience. That said this is a good candidate for a "headphones" album.
kind of cool, overindulgent, i can imagine recommending this to someone but it's pretty "whatever" for me
Good movie soundtrack
That first song is an excellent intro, but it never gets better from there. The rest of the songs just kind of float by. Favorite Songs Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space
Fun!
Boring
01) Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (I Can't Help Falling in Love) - 7,5 02) Come Together - 7,5 03) I Think I'm in Love - 8,5 04) All of My Thoughts - 7,5 05) Stay with Me - 8,0 06) Electricity - 8,0 07) Home of the Brave - 6,5 08) The Individual - 6,0 09) Broken Heart - 6,5 10) No God Only Religion - 6,0 11) Cool Waves - 7,5 12) Cop Shoot Cop… - 5,0 TOTAL: 7,04 (70/100) Current ranking: 451/799
A couple of highs to start the album off, then a long period that doesn't really hit the same, then it picks back up with the last few tracks It offers a nice dream, in parts
Not what I expected from the 60’s with that name, fairly decent
Ok 90’s alt rock
pretty good
I loved the beginning but by the end was kinda like… this is still going on?
Rock, but at least it has its own atmosphere and mood.
One of those that could have been tighter if it was shorter.
I liked it!
You have to be wired yourself to listen to this record straight through. I suspect that this record was included because it was a left field extension of the shoegaze scene without the haze and more ambient electronic sounds combined with the multi-layer production and effects. The difficulty for me is that it comes off as a little sterile and made for headphones. And those wearing the headphones would never leave there homes. I think the term space rock is a little generalized for this music. It’s certainly not remotely similar to Hawkwind. The lyrical experience is interesting but having them embedded in the layers also removes some of the emotional elements and results in a standoff between listener and band. Spiritualized puts the burden on the listener to connect with the music rather than the band trying to give the listener entre into the music. You have to make an effort to connect to this album. The real question then is there a rewarding payoff for that effort? Unfortunately, the answer to that question is no. 3/5
Solide 3.5
It’s not often that I come across an album that I’ve never heard of before. This was one of those. Interesting. Chill.
Average to good music
Vet inte om jag ska höra det som toe-gazing indie, eller som ambient med vocals. Eventuuellt borde de bestämma sig. Vad vet jag. En trea
Did not finish it but I liked some songs. Incredible album name
Listened to this pretty passively because I've tried it before and didn't really think it was for me, but I feel like it had moments were it was pretty cool. The finale song was really epic. But yeah kinda too cookie cutter indie rock for me I think? Like I'd rather listen to Age of Adz. This just feels very self important in an off putting way.
It's a solid dream pop outing for the former half of Spaceman 3.
Reminded me of the gorillaz. Good enough to save
I’m somewhere between a 2 and 3. Didn’t mind it and kinda liked the modern psychedelic elements. But droned on after awhile. Got arcade fire vibes which isn’t necessarily a good indicator for me
Correcto
This was chill. I’m surprised I’d never heard of them before. I enjoyed it. I’d reach for it again. Nothing really jumped out at me during the listen. I think I was just more taken that I’d never come across it despite the similarities to the likes of blur and other artists I listen to from similar genre/era/region. Didn’t set the world on fire. 6.3/10
Speciellt, men inte alls dumt. I stycken värd mera.
Obviously the product of tremendous collaboration and effort, but some of these are truly exhausting songs. The individual pieces of them work, but those pieces essentially on loop at length for 70 minutes is a tedious listen. Some paring down would make this an outright bangerfest. Had some mid-late 1960s music stylings that I enjoyed. I may revisit.
Sort of torn on this one. On the one hand I love really pretentious fart sniffing post rock. It hasn’t come up yet but that Tortoise album is getting 5 stars. But then there’s also the annoying shitty sneering Brit pop aspect of it that just takes away from the bombast. I love the fucking audacity of the first song having an Elvis interpolation, the last song is a John Prine send up! But then songs like I Think I’m in Love just hang like a fart in the air. The singer doing an Oasis impression that goes on for 8 interminable minutes
More innovative than most British albums on this list
An interesting attempt but it is a bit of a swing and miss for me. 3/5.
Sounds like a slightly more alternative Sufjan Stevens, with some Lou Reed-esque vocals. The tracks are hit or miss for me. Highlights: "Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space" and "Cool Waves"
I wanted to like this more than I actually did. It felt overly long and rather repetitive. Oh well.
Yeah I mean if you like music to listen to when you're high this is a pretty good listen, I really liked Broken Heart a lot and I think the mix of different instruments throughout kept me fairly engaged
Very sprititual
Overall a spacy mix of viby music and a strong soundscape mixed with a good layout of songs and a non stale progression throughout the album. Overall a good album, not something i would pick up again but im definally not mad to have experienced it. I tend to dislike hour or longer albums because i find most artist dont have the range to hold my attention for long enhough during the album but this one was okay at that.
This album is very special. I liked the first few songs but halfway through I got kinda bored. "Electricity" picks up some steam again, but most of the momentum is soon lost during "the individual" which is just noise. "No God Only Religion" was very interesting again however, although a little too long for my taste Overall I'd give it 7. There are definitely songs I will come back to, but as an album it is far from perfect.
Spiritualized is one of the major gifts from this project to me. This is the second album of theirs that I’ve listened to from the list. They were both super interesting. This one has some gorgeous tracks and some that are very challenging. I had never even heard of this band and now they rank very high. Cinematic. A feast for my ears. Apparently they are space rock? Far out.
Dark and layered music that needs more time spent with it.
Pretty chill 3/5
definitely a vibe, but it just wasn't mine. slight chance I revisit someday though
3/5
Cool. Can't say I was very familiar with "Ambient Rock" before this album. I can dig.
It's alright, like shoegaze but with a bit more going on. Just not enough to be memorable.
Holy wall of sound Batman. There is good & interesting stuff going on here, but getting bashed over the head by the kitchen sink for 70 minutes is a bit much for these ole ears.
Interesting. Meandering. At times, too noisy for me.
Fav: Electricity Least Fav: The Individual Thought some of the songs dragged on a bit, ironically not the 17 minute song at the end
Parts of this I really liked, but parts I had to skip. Not down with that level of sustained 'noise'. So gotta go 3 stars, but I'm going to listen again and 'like' a few tracks on spotify.
Always meant to give this a spin. Interesting, but not life changing
kept going between 2, 3, and 4, and i respect the hell out of that
3.5
Not for me
I like this album. I want to like it more. I see the high reviews that some give it. And I suppose in its niche, it's one of the better albums. But over all, it's 7 out of 10, and I'm rounding down.
I thought this was just good enough to make the list. Some solid tracks, but also some musical styles that I wish weren't included on this album. Instrumentals > Vocal tracks. 6/10
Their third album. Rock / Indie / Shoegaze. Fifty eight collaborators and eighteen months of production. As well as a near twenty minute last track ! An epic and grandiose idea. Brilliant at times, a bit flat at times too. Way better than most of the mainstream at the time though.
It's funny, some tracks on this album are absolutely amazing (e.g. "Broken Heart" 😮), and others are truly meh (e.g. "I Think I'm in Love" 🙄). Overall I'm quite impressed, especially for a group I've never heard before!
Jaunty, catchy, surprisingly engaging
An epic exploration into love, drugs, and space. At times, it can feel a bit bloated, but it’s so gaudy and adventurous, how can you knock them
This was chilled and cool, need to listen again. 3/5
464/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
It's almost got an early-days Pink Floyd flavor to it. I had no idea what to expect from this one, had never heard of it or the band before. Pleasantly surprised. Another where the ambient jam might overstay its welcome occasionally. Not sure I'll be spinning it often but glad to know it's out there.
This was actually nice. 3.5
Pretty solid so far.
Complex and ambient feeling, but not something I'll listen to again.
3.5
favs: -ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space -broken heart
Pleasantly surprised
Pretty cool to listen to, kind of liked it...then later today I was trying to recall specifics about it and realized I couldn't. Just had it on while working and there was nothing about it that really held my attention, but also nothing that made me want to turn it off, so I listened to it again. Didn't like the Elvis inspired first song, the rest of it was good. Still, nothing here that makes me want to return to it and listen to it again. Glad I listened to it, though...very ambitious, a lot of cool things going on sonically...great to listen to with a nice pair of headphones.
Ihan mielenkiintoista ja monipuolista space rokkia. Aika rauhallista. Parhaat: Broken Heart
That was… a journey. A new genre of Space Rock discovered and now I’m wondering what the meaning of life is, where it all began, and what time the aliens are arriving.
Album 21/1001 *SpiritualiSed 🌌👨🚀
Perhaps the most I've enjoyed a space rock album. Almost got to 4 stars, but too many of the songs overstay their welcome. That also means the runtime of this album is a bit unwieldy.
Generic I listened and don’t remember anything. I do remember it not being bad.
I kind of wish this was the only Spiritualized album in this project, because as much as I thought it was an interesting addition to the collection, I'm pretty sure the other Spiritualized album will feel like too much (especially since this one seems a bit too long and too much noise). The highlights for me were the overall effect of continuous waves of music ebbing and flowing, plus the opening title track (especially the background Elvis lyrics over the sea of sound), the perhaps too long "I think I'm in love", and "No god only religion" (and kudos to "Cop choot cop" for keeping my interest over much of the 17-minute-plus length). It all gets a bit much pretty quickly to the uninitiated, but I suspect Spiritualized fans probably adore this album (and perhaps Radiohead fans too when they're feeling particularly expansive).
Really good for about 10 minutes, then it's just all the same
6/10 one of the best psychedelic albums ive heard. a bit too long for my taste but the melodies are amazing. Fav: I think I am in love, broken heart and cool waves
Opening song built off Can't Help Falling in Love was pretty cool. The rest kind of sounds like the music that people who don't like music would put on when they have friends over and feel like they're should be music playing. And I think that's fine. Also I'm noticing a trend by which the list-maker has a real inability to resist albums that end with mediocre songs that go on forever.
A nice musical like album that flows well from beginning to end.
Again, I am asking for just an ounce of brevity on an otherwise pretty interesting album
It's grand, like. Perhaps a touch dated at this stage.
First listen
That's not my taste in music - But some pleasant songs
the first song sets you up for a whole lot of nothing
When i got my first impression of Jason Pierce's music, i thought i was gonna hate it but after listening to all three albums he worked on that are on this project, I actually kinda liked them and Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space may actually be the best one of them all. One of the most interesting things about this album is how it was packaged. It was packaged as if it was prescription medication, even going so far as to having a booklet containing "Dosage Advice". It is weird since i don't think that this is the most drug-tripy album on this list, not even close. Even so, the music was pretty good and fit the space rock sound quite well. It's still not perfect but it is Jason Pierce's best work. Best Song: Broken Heart Worst Song: All of My Thoughts
it’s got some jams but delves into just noise at some point.
Annoying noise
First song was good, rest have been okay but not great. Still have not finished the album
A more rock orientated album by Spiritualised which is a definite plus for me as I hadn't heard before. Some shades of early Floyd at times and good use of Gospel Choir to give it a very expansive feel. Interesting if a little avant garde.
Eh.
I liked the style, the space rock was very chilly and the effects nice. Some good lyrics as well, I didn't know this band or the previous one
Lots of interesting ideas musically, but a bit vague and wandering.
Enjoyable mostly. 3.5 ———————————— My non-musician scoring system. 5 - Love it. Would play anytime, buy, see live… 4 - Good music. 3 - Average playlist. Depends on time and setting. 2 - I can’t listen to whole songs. 1 - No.
Was interesting ethereal, haunting, and kinda disjointed, random, chaotic, all things I kinda dig, but I couldn't fully get into. Love a good 17 minute long song though
Faded into the background, but had me tapping my feet here and there.
I don’t know man, whilst listening to this album my live estimation fluctuated from down to two and up to four. Ambitious, messy, approaching the profound sometimes, pretentious at all times. There was a lot going on and I’m glad they swung for the fences.
Ahead of it's time
I think I may have liked this better if I wasn’t already familiar with the Velvet Underground. When I pressed play, though, I was expecting a rather drab journey to a planetarium. So in that context, it was a pleasant surprise.
I liked one of the songs, but the rest were meh or mildly annoying.
Really psychedelic British rock. Not terrible. 3/5
Wow. I have finally caught up and can generate a new album. It has already been quite the journey and I am not even 10% of the way through the list. I can’t wait to fall behind again in approximately 2 days. I don't have much to say about this album, it's not my usual listening, and I was more impatient than normal at the thought of getting to resume the generator. I liked the title track, and I Think I'm in Love had some interesting musical ideas (I mean it BETTER, if it's going to be 8 minutes long). Broken Heart stole the show for me though, what a great song. I think I just don't "get" the majority of this album, and that's okay. Maybe someday I will return and think I was crazy for only giving it a 3, but only time will tell
A wall of sound with rich textures occasionally morphing into loud discordant noise. I wanted to like it more but the pure noise elements were a bit off putting. Probably would have enjoyed it more with a big fat doobie to stretch the conciousnesss…
Interesting album, I like the mix of genres and what they were trying to achieve however I found the album dragged in some areas, the long songs were a bit tedious to get through. If they tightened the track listing I think it would’ve been a higher rated album for me
One to have in the background but didn't love it. Not really my thing
Ei huono! Kaipaan itse psykedelian lisäksi usein vähän enemmän koukkuja, mutta ei huono! 3/5
Pitkä ja meditatiivinen. 3.5/5.
I had never heard of the band before today and I am instantly in love with them. This is fantastic. Really enjoyed this one! If the arcade fire existed in 1994 i think they would sound something like this.
Opener very good
it got a tad bit TOO experimental at the end
Huh I didn’t know what to expect. I’d heard that first so many times and never knew it was Spiratualized. First half of the album was ok and then things got more interesting around “Electricity,” which could have been a King Gizzard song at points, so naturally that was a win for me. Rest of the album reminded me a lot of Adem, which was unexpected. When I checked the date stamps it looks like Spirtualized was the originator (of the 2) of that particular sound.
A preferred provider of the indie soundtrack to my life.
Good ambient
2.75
6.5/10
Pas très mémorable, mais assez sympa
On one hand, I remember kind of liking it as I was listening. On the other hand, that was less than 24 hours ago and I remember almost nothing about it. Sidenote, this album beat out OK Computer for that year’s NME award, which is yet another example of how worthless the NMEs are.
This album is absolutely batshit. Genre bending and interesting, not every track is captivating but it’s a cohesive body that flows well. The strings are blissful on Broken Heart. The album feels older than it is. No particular stand out track, but musically it’s solid.
Listened to it while playing a game of MTG commander, pretty chill vibes.
Somewhere between the slowcore drone of Low and the gospel rock of primal scream lies spiritualized. Personal preference for the slower psychedelic shoe gaze tracks as the upbeat songs just don’t quite go hard enough for me. Awarded a high 3 but could easily go to a 4 with multiple listens. Annoyed this didn’t click for me as there is clearly a lot to enjoy
This could have been trimmed down by taking out the noise sections and I would have considered a higher rating. I did enjoy it though.
3.6
Mycket bättre "shoegaze" än tex mbv. Det är lite mer trivsamt, inte samma jobbig ljudvägg (även om det är "mycket" så man blir lite overwhelmed).
This is not really for me - I somehow can see that it can be enjoyable to some tho, so I can't fault it only on personal preference
A concoction of words I thought I'd never listen in my life: Heroin Space Gospel. Yet here I am, reading a comment where this phrase is used to describe this album, and which is actually correct. 3/5
A band I never really got into. Bought this when it came out and I quite like the first half (up to Electricity) but the rest of it becomes a chore to listen to. I'd rather listen to Ride, Slowdive or newer stuff like Ringo Deathstarr and Blushing
What just happened to me? The highs were high, but the lows were low. What an interesting album.
This was a pretty good album. Would totally listen to it again.
Really interesting start to an album- specially for the time period of 1997. I love how unconventional the layering on this first song is, like the harmony voice (with "telephone EQ effect") coming in around 0:30 seconds in and being louder than the "primary" voice. There's a slew of interesting things on this record that keep me engaged.. like the odd time signature on the intro of "I Think I'm in Love", and the Elvis quoting on "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space". It's a very unique experience. Most of the time I really enjoyed the droning meditative rock.
I can hear the effort that went into making this album, but for the most time it just leaves me cold and doesn't invoke any particular feelings in me. Also the stark contrast between the aetherial feeling of some songs followed by fast and loud rockers is more jarring than anything else.
Very floaty hehe! But on a more serious note, the entire album has a pretty good feeling of flow, each song melting into the next in this jazzy, weed-infused haze. That is for me, both the greatest strength and weakness of the whole project, as it reads more like a jamming session between friends than a serious attempt to communicate something. When listening to albums (I don't do this for casual listening, which is strange because most albums will be underpinned by the opposite philosophical leaning) I am prejudiced towards music that at least gives off the impression of having something on its mind; sometimes though, having a good time is enough.
Some very good songs, but too drawn out
3.5. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Two or three more times and it’s possible I would give it a four. But you definitely have to be in the mood for it.
Different, not bad. Not necessarily my cup of tea.
sounds like a flock of geese getting raptured
No thoughts just vibes
Some interesting things going on instrumentally but it was altogether it was just Too Much for me to enjoy. Walked away from it really wanting to listen to Sketches of Spain???
Moins ma tasse de the
Interesting but too long
I knew this album, the first track is a banger, otherwise it's just okay
Not really to my taste, but I enjoyed the first song and "Stay with Me".
The kind of album that high school me woulda said must be what doing acid is like
pretty cool! had some more interesting sounds and also vibes
I Appreciate the Lego (?) themed album art, but this record’s all over the place. Spiritualized’s sound is far more frenzied and anxiety-inducing for me than anything else, but some of the more lo-fi classic tunes like “I think I’m in Love” are genuinely fantastic.
Not as spacey as I was thinking it could be although it was trippy at times. Not horrible but not great either - just kind of a second tier rock album. Meh
kinda wish it had more space sounds, but this was chill
Very English cliche with big sound. Cool but not for me.
good music, few long songs but sounded great
Decent, but nothing overtly special. Some songs bang, others not so much
very interesting but i feel like in the wrong mood to enjoy it. and that tells me i don't like it as much as i want to. i can see why others would though
a little bit calm, and vital
started off fun, but the latter half of the album gets way too busy and sensorily overloading
Not focused, but i think i liked it 3
I don't know what space rock is, but it was pretty ok. Lyrics nothing to write home about. Nice string arrangements when available.
I feel like I've heard albums like this before (either Chemistry Is What We Are by Simian, or maybe The Go Team) and I've enjoyed them, but this one didn't do it for me. No stand-out songs from my listening.
The slower songs are absolutely gorgeous, everything else is a bit meh
Good. Quite enjoyable .
ich kenn de erst song?? woher? wele film? ok weiss nöd aber mega schöni version vo cant help falling in love. come together het au meeega öppis findi hert geil. i think im in love seehr cooli bassline. finds huere stimmig alles. stay with me au no süss d slide giti isch cool. aber etz scho seeehr langsam. ich weiss nöd wie fest s cover en ifluss het ich lieb blaui covers. electricity het chli groove und tönt seeehr compressed aber no geil. s blibt chli lang ufem gliche akkord. langet. sehr shoegaze lärmig geg de schluss. the individual etz au eeehner afoch lärm, au wennis check glaub waser will. mega klangteppich. au irgendwie schön wies dissonanter und denn wieder harmonischer wird. aber jäää. nödmol soo geil. bröken heart verzell. super chalti aber au heimeligi synths. sehr sad. aber isch etz nöd so deep wies gern wär findi. afoch paar chords. zum teil schöni vorhält. trifft mich etz aber nöd soo. no god only religion no cool. sehr chaotisch. aber au nöd mega spannend. cool waves au herzigi melodie aber sehr repetitiv checks nöd gaaanz. cop shoot cop fangt sehr moody und cool ah und find s klavier super. aber gseh etz scho wie sich die 17 minute chönted zieh. bin aber offe. jep etz ischs zerst monoton und denn huere lärmig worde. naja. trompete isch no cool. git glaub e 3. scho sehr gueti moment vorallem am aafang. s het oft nienets ane ufbaue, so sehr unbefriedigend. het meh versproche alses gsi isch.
Some lovely music mixed in with some absolute cacophony of sound.
психодел с на удивление знакомым первым треком (но помнить его откуда тюнфайнд его помнить я вряд ли могу)
I had high hopes and some songs where indeed great - Broken Heart being my favorite - BUT some songs where just not pleasant. A few new songs to my "liked" and a few that I will never revisit.
I was suggested normally I’m pretty quick at drawing. A conclusion on music are here for the first time. But this album has me perplexed. I think I like it but then I’m not sure. I suspect I should come back to this one and give it more attention Because there’s probably value here but I just can’t hear or understand yet.
The album started really strong. I was surprised how much I was enjoying it! The back half fell off and took a turn I was not a fan of. Have to give them credit for experimenting with a 16 minute song. 5.7/10
Too slow, too sensual at times. 3/5
shoegaze/space music, not bad, not great
This album hit the indie/alternative radio stations like a nuclear bomb
A shoegaze, sonic experiment, that reminds me of all the bits of 1997 that I can remember. There are some beautiful tones on this album, and there is a huge amount of layering on each track. It’s a collection of genres that intermingle well with each other, but it’s long. The final track, a 17 minute sonic journey that left me feeling the tiniest bit exhausted. As much as I enjoyed this album, I did find it a bit inflated and lacking any more substance than pretty soundscapes.
I don't remember Spiritualized being space rock?! This is britpop/rock with a touch of hippie, man. I don't mind the music, but Wikipedia is fucking all over the place with it's genres/classifications and I'm getting pissed about it. Well, it might be the original mainstream magazines that made genremush as well, but I'm annoyed none the less. I can see why they're saying space rock tho, feels like Spiritualized had indeed ingested fair dosages of Hawkwind and Ozric Tentacles, which was then filtered thought Spiritualized thought processes. I feel like even neo-psychedelic might be a bit too much to say. More than any psychedelic residue in the music, I feel the brit rock flavour the strongest, hands down.
3.5
It was funky! Will probably never listened again but happy I heard it.
Significantly better than I thought it would be. Borderline 4 stars, but a 17 minute finishing track that isn’t phenomenal keeps it at 3.
I enjoyed this album for about 30-40 minutes then a sense of dred overcame me - is it ever going to finish, what's the point of everything, and so my downward spiral started. I like the music - it's size and difference, just went on for long
This is too big and unwieldy to hold itself up, but I enjoyed many of its moments of chaotic noise and peaceful reflection.
Never heard of this, but there are some melodious tracks akin to Radiohead. Not every track is great, but almost none is bad.
I should love this but the songs just don't hit me.
great musical album! very calming and less about the lyrics, more about the overall sound
sorta classic but sometimes too weird
It was OK/fine until it got weird about 70% of the way in. Then I just stopped listening because it was unlistenable. But most of it was OK so I'll give it a begrudging 3.
Listened Before? N Spacey! This album is exactly what I expected when I read that it's "space rock". Not really my thing - too droning. I'm not on enough drugs for this. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Come Together
This music drifts through the folds of space, blending noise and shoegaze without anchoring itself to any one style. The title track and "Cop Shoot Cop" stood out as highlights—I only wish more of the album had followed their lead.
Their sound reminds me of the Verve in some ways. Actually, they remind me of the Verve in many ways. Very spac-y sounding music that gives itself time to roam. Shoegazing everywhere with no regard for others. I was pretty pumped up reading the description of this album in the comments and on the Wikipedia page. Then, the album ended up sounding almost like I had expected prior to reading the comments and Wikipedia page. It's not a bad thing but this is space/shoegaze rock that needs to be heard in headphones, not heard on speakers where the external world can hear it. The shoegaze gets a bit out of hand towards the end of the album with what feels like more instrumental tracks. Never once was I bored or didn't like what I heard. I also wasn't jumping out of my seat. There is a time when I would listen to this again, as it does make for good music while working.
This started off very wishy-washy and I was almost convinced nothing could save it from the mediocrity of a 2* rating. Electricity and Broken Heart saved it. Cop Shoot Cop was okay until I realised it's 17 minutes long.
Yeah it’s pretty alright. I feel like I should like this more but I don’t so
I'll admit to never having heard of the Space Rock genre, or at least not being aware of it if I had. I can see how it relates to prog rock, and how bands like Pink Floyd influenced it. This album in particular definitely catches some of the edge, humor, and psychedelic rock vibes of late 60's, pre-Atom Heart Mother Floyd. There's a lot to love in that era of Floyd, but there's a lot to forget and learn from as well. Spiritualized seems to have learned some of those lessons and put together an album that takes that late 60's, "Saucerful of Secrets," "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" Floyd sound and turn it into something that feels modern while still harkening back to a time the band members were probably children for. Sometimes it's listenable, sometimes it's boring, most times it's just alright. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who wasn't looking for something pretty niche, and I wouldn't be seeking this out again on my own. There is something, though that makes it endearing in its own way. The major thing working against it is the fact that it's by and English band from the 90's, which really just makes me think it's here because of the author's bias more than anything else. So it gets three stars for being creative and different, but not because I think it necessarily belongs here. Standout Tracks: All of My Thoughts, Electricity, No God Only Religion
Not crazy about this but I enjoyed the first track the most. It’s a fairly indulgent, complex, and sonically interesting. However, by the end of it 8 was feeling like I wanted it to be over. On to the next one!
More spacey nonsense (affectionate) from Spiritualized. I personally preferred Lazer Guided Melodies over this, as this was a bit too free-form and didn't grab me in the same way.
First two tracks started off great. Then I kinda forgot I was listening to it. Pleasant though.
Good vibes, and I liked the songs that built into something rocking. I'd give it another listen, but it didn't especially stand out to me in this first go.
Grandiloquent sous couvert d'expérimentation et d'audace
If I had heard this album in 1997 it would probably have remained one of my favorites of all time. As is it's surprisingly good. Home of the Brave and Cool Waves were definite standouts.
I'd probably give this a higher score if I had heard about it when I was in high school.
This has its moments, but it’a bit of slog for its length.
3.5
3.5
Floydian with distortion. Kinda insists upon itself, but I'm not offended. I would rather listen to its component sounds/genres than listen to their synthesis. 7/10 Favorite Song: Cop Shoot Cop...
Meh. Went on way too long. Not terrible. Just wasn't really my thing.
This is the second "space rock" album I've had in three days. I've read that space rock is a variant of shoegaze, but the album sounds like something Morcheeba might have put out. Overall, the songs on "Ladies And Gentlemen ..." are coherent and interesting.
It's aight. Nice voice, some groovy bass lines, but overall not a lot to sink my teeth into. 2.75
Decent in places 3.5*
There were some really interesting and pretty songs in this album, it was really a unique listen for me. Broken Heart was really pretty and I did enjoy that track plus "No God Only Religion", "Cool Waves" and several more on here. Cool, "Cop Shoot Cop" is a nice 17 minute jam so far that I'm kind of enjoying. Overall though I think this isn't much beyond a 3 for me. Interesting though for sure
Nice
2.5 Cool cover
Another example of a record that I know I should like. On paper, it's right in my wheelhouse. Checks a lot of boxes. I've given it a few spins over the years. And after another one, I still don't love it. Maybe I should check out their other albums, but I probably won't.
Had a manager at an old job that loved this band. Never thought they were amazing but didn’t dislike them either
I've never been able to get into this album. It seems overly dense and doesn't really go anywhere. It's good, but kind of exhausting.
Honestly, I expect to like this more than I did, given what I knew of the band, but having never heard this album before. It wasn't bad, but didn't do much for me. I wonder if this is another case of a UK band getting on the 1001 mostly because the author is from the UK and the record came out while they were actively engaged in consuming new music?
Got better as it went on, sounded a bit wanky to start but went psychedelic which I'm all for. Low 3.
Got their debut album about 25 albums ago. My different reaction to this one makes me wonder how much my ratings from album to album are mood vs. changing styles of bands. I really enjoyed their debut, it caught me by surprise. But I had been coming off another surprise by Incubus and a good Bowie album. This album was meh, but I'm coming off two middling albums and even a third (underwhelmed by the Kinks). I do think this album has a different style. It sounds like that cursed baggy/Madchester scene mixed with a little bit of space rock. Like Primal Scream added a bit more orchestra (the strings not the brass) rather than Spiritualized added a bit of horns to their airy guitars and synth. Yeah, I think it was all the horns and brass - didn't love it and/or it felt too prominent in many of the songs, especially the first four and the last three. Though I guess I didn't mind Come Together (felt more like Brit Pop than space rock) and the latter half of All of My Thoughts was okay. Stay With Me was the best wispy song and maybe my favorite on the album - notably very little brass in it. Electricity was amped up (again, felt like Oasis-style Britpop) - not bad but felt a little out of place. All in all, I didn't hate it (like I hate Primal Scream) but I'll take more of their debut album please and less of this one.
Really cool, genre blending of psychedelic rock, jazz, and r&b sounds also. Widely unique for 1990's music, might not have been discussed frequently. But this is a certified tastemakers selection. Although, it has much to enjoy from those looking for more pop tonalities. This album gets down to the groove pretty quick and uses space to redefine each track. The minimal vocal stylings add a sense of desire to this album, most times you end up thinking "when are the words coming back?" And boom there they are.
The concept here is pretty cool. Lots of samples are looped, extra synth/electro sounds added and each song just sort of builds as it goes. Some nice academic 20th century theory is behind this, and the execution is really well done. It's just not an overly exciting album to listen to. Pretty much every song is the same formula of just constant build. I got pretty bored with it about 4 tracks in. So, cool concept, solid execution, mediocre listenability.
1st track lovely. Then this large section of shoegaze crap, then the last 3 or 4 tracks are really exciting. Real mixed bag, would totally listen to the B-side again
I imagine this is quite a polarizing album. If you like it, it's great. If you dislike it, it's crap. I do think it a little from column A and a little from column B. The production is top notch, I can't complain at that. However, I feel as though there is a lack of any significant melody or catchy hook. It feels as though the band prioritised the sound of the album as opposed to the content of the album. There's some decent stuff to be found here, and I did quite enjoy it, but at 70 minutes long, you have to make sure that you're writing good and engaging stuff to keep people listening. They did very well to get the album sounding good, but maybe cutting the run time in half would have made it a better experience.
Es como te imaginarías que suena el 'rock espacial', temas larguísimos, muy atmosféricos y se llega a poner aburrido pero rescato bastante.
3.5 was enjoyable all in all
Not god only religion made me feel like I was floating. Maybe bc I am floating in a giant metal tube sat in middle seat sandwiched between two men and behind someone obnoxiously reclining their seat. i also like cop shoot cop and a few others. Better than the previous spiritualized album I think.
6/10 - Similar to the last Spiritualized album but a little bit worse. There were still a bunch of interesting songs but some that I liked less. Cop Shoot Cop was long and bad. I liked Cool waves and Stay with Me. Sadly no counting in this album.
Pleasantly surprised, some poor man’s Radiohead vibes.
2.9 I thought the floating is space song was super corny with the space beeps sprinkled throughout but there were a couple of songs on the rest of the album that I flagged to listen to again.
Ah, my last Spiritualized album. When I went to check Roni Size's New Forms off the list yesterday, this album was right next to it, and I thought it was cool that both albums had some similarities in the artwork, and low and behold, this is my album today. I gave four stars to Lazer Guided Melodies, so I have pretty high expectations for this album. I thought this album was fine. It was really interesting to listen to, and I enjoyed the overall sound, but not a lot really stood out to me. The musical arrangements were really nice and fun, but the vocals and lyrics were pretty run of the mill to me. Also, some of the songs went on for too long for my taste. I'm not against longer songs, but some of these songs didn't feel like they went anywhere interesting over the course of their runtimes. Only a few songs really stood out to me on this album. "Electricity," had a really fun energy to it, and the guitar playing was really great. "Broken Heart" was really beautiful, and I loved its haunting melody. This album was cool to listen to because it's a good album, but in my opinion, it's the sort of thing that's just kind of nice to have on in the background.
The first half of this is a solid 4 even if (or because) the first track is basically Pachelbel’s Canon. Unfortunately the second part of the album degenerates into cacophony, so it’s a 3…
not that interesting. too spacey anf kinda pointless but at least it was okay
Best Song: Broken Heart. This felt like the kind of emotional track that would accompany the climactic scene in a good movie. Maybe the characters are saying goodbye, where you hope they might see each other again even though you know they won't. But you still hope. Worst Song: Cop Shoot Cop. Sure, let's take the relaxed vibe instilled by the penultimate track and fuck it all the way up with chaos. Overall: Not something that I can imagine being in the mood to return to frequently, but if I want to be sad in lo-fi, I know where to go now.
It has the basic ingredients of some good music, but this is kind of flat. Has a the overly compressed sound of it's era. The vocals get to be repetitive, lacking range. The Individual might be my favorite track. This is a good album, with more potential. Just didn't get me today.
This felt spiritually shoe gazey if not musically in a way that was compelling
it's fine
While this album belongs to the whiney indie rock that ravaged music in the late 90s and early 2000s, this was a ratjher pleasant listen. The orchestration is interesting and adventurous, with at times really beautiful songwritting. Probably won't listen to the whole thing again, but might add some selected tunes to a playlist.
It’s an interesting one this, as parts of the album work for me and others don’t. I was hoping I might like this more than I did to be honest, as it seemed from the write up that it was well up my street. I really like the bigger soundscape moments the most, with the violins and brass and more, that stuff is great (eg. Broken Heart). And then in general I like those tracks that sound quite big, with lots going on in them. But then there’s plenty in here that feels self-indulgent, and much of it is overlong. In general it feels pretty accomplished, but… I don’t know… lots of it also feels kind of sanitised somehow. I don’t know how to describe it. Maybe a bit surface. There’s something that’s preventing me from connecting with it on a deeper level – which feels like something an album like this would be really striving to do. There’s moments and soundscapes here that remind me of someone like Sigur Ros – but they don’t connect and resonate in the same way.
Моментами тяжело, моментами трансцендентно. "Stay with Me" запомнилась.
Liked some, a bit odd, rock and lofi
Bit self indulgent but what did I expect
'T eerste nummer vond ik al slecht. Klonk exact hoe ik dacht dat het ging klinken: spirituele mumbojumbo. Come Together is dan wel weer een goed nummer. Ik dacht een zweverige cover te horen van The Beatles, maar was aangenaam verrast. I Think I'm in Love is ook op zich nog oké. Electricity is ook nog goed. De rest is het niet echt waard om nog eens te vernoemen. 'T is een beetje Pink Floyd meets Grandaddy ofzo 3.4
A tad long with some filler, but the good moments are very good.
another album that would benefit from trimming it by 20 minutes, decent background music though
It was only three albums ago, I reviewed "Lazer Guided Melodies" from Spiritualized, which I didn't care that much for as I described as too ambient and "breezy". I wasn't looking forward to "Ladies And Gentlemen..." for more of the same? I gave it a fair listen and even listened to the first half again on headphones to get a fuller effect. I did enjoy it more, the album felt a little more cohesive, the songs had more direction and was more accessible. I can't say I loved it, but it did keep me interested. This is definitely headphone music and I should revisit Lazer Guided at some point, but for now I'll have another listen to Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating In Space and zone out for another hour.
Some unbelievable highs and some turgid lows. The excess is the making and the breaking of this album. Either way, thanks for title track which I hope is playing though my head as I leave this mortal coil.
I can kinda see the vision they had with making a 90's alternative rock album with elements of electronica, gospel, grunge, etc. However they didn't stick the landing smoothly.
Opening track took me too long to realize it’s sampling I can’t help falling in love with you. Even tho it’s in the name. Ugh I hate giving album reviews a 3… it’s a mix of things I never want to hear again but am glad I’ve experienced and things I like enough to have on rotation but didn’t knock my socks off. But I think this is where this album goes for me. It’s very long and a bit pretentious. But there are some beautiful moments that I enjoyed.
There were some things I liked about it and there were some things that I didn’t like. Overall, it was okay, albeit, pretty long. It did change up though the album so it didn’t feel like the same song over and over, but I jut didn’t love all of it.
Spacerock…who knew? Sad too.
Definitely verging on a spiritual religious experience, but I suppose my general state of mind going into it was not open-hearted or downtrodden enough to fully appreciate the impact. It's like going to church as an atheist who has their shit together, it's difficult to get dragged into the dogma.
eh, some bangers
When I was looking into this group and album, and read the words “English space rock band”, was ready to hate this album. To be fair though, it was pretty good. Outside of the run time, and a 17 minute long track, it was enjoyable enough that I’m not mad I listened through this once. Still not sure it deserves to be on this list.
It’s plays bit artsy fartsy for my liking
I was expecting this to be quite pretentious considering the ambitious concept of the album. But when it comes down to the actual music some of it is not too bad.
Different
Ok
I liked this more than I remembered. This band was one of those that I was introduced to by my hipster colleagues when I was in my 20s in the early 2000s. Some of those bands really resonated with me then but not so much Spiritualized. 20+ years later... not so bad
Come Together // I Think I’m In Love // Broken Heart //
... OK I guess. A lot of noise of noise sake
A rather eclectic album. Various bits reminded me of various other artists. I rather enjoyed it overall.
It's a pretty good album for 90s fare. I sometimes found it a bit repetitive, but the production and musicianship are very good. It is worth another listen, my rating may improve after hearing it again.
Interesting, at times sonically interesting. I can see the way this influenced MGMT and similar bands. I like the vibe but nothing besides Broken Heart stands out to me
The album is a fun experience! Probably something to ask about. Quite heavy on synthesisers and electronic sounds. Just that the songs get a little too experimental from time to time.
This was very atmospheric album that definitely had me feeling like a 2021 meme of guyssss we are literally just on a floating rock :p But all seriousness, this album made me feel both big and small relevate to the title and band name. I'm all for artist doing whatever, but I love when the art is cohesive in this way <3
Another band I've never heard of, but I actually liked this one. I'd describe it as (Coldplay + Oasis + The Verve + Horns) x Radiohead's weirdness. Very heavily (but well) produced sound with lots of layers. The horns add a great element. One the downside, this is at least 15 minutes too long. Eliminating these parts would get this to a 4 for me.
Liked it more as it progressed. What a bleak month it has been for us on this list.
Not for me
Assez inégal, des sons que j'ai vraiment aimé et d'autres beaucoup moins
This album surprised me (how can there still be something this good that I have literally never heard of) and it actually didn't feel too long. I think the length fits the type of music, very ethereal and otherworldly. I listened to it a few times through and it just got better and better. Diverse range of sounds, beautifully produced, very raw and ambitious, I loved it all. Consider this one officially entered into "Saved" repertoire.
Another "soundtrack" album with epically long ensembles. I did feel like I was floating in space at times. "I think I'm In Love" has some great lyrics and the ego battle back and forth works well. Quite bold to have a "finale" in the middle of a song for 5 mins but I did want it to stop. Overly drawn out but the complexity and effort is apparent. Play this on the ISS...2.55.
Love the whole gestalt of the album art and packaging. First song is great, the rest not as much. Some is pretty, lots is boring, some is actively unpleasant.
ended strong, the 17 minute song was rockin
Some cool instrumentation but after going through so much of this list it’s hard mot to just hear a whiny British guy singing over it.
Well first of all let me start off by saying I misread the above as 1979 not 97. Which is why I had intended to say I was amazed at how much ahead of its time the production quality was, but 20 years can make a big difference 😁. When a band are described as being part of a 'minority' genre, ie Space Rock. You can't help but compare them to the band that basically invented and epitomise that genre. And musically they they stack up very well. The vocals and lyrics on the other hand feel a little incongruous. For me they are too clean, too smooth. He has a good voice, btu they don't seem to match the basicness (if that is a word) of the music, though even that is a little over produced. The first, and title track does not fit the rest of the album at all as far as I'm concerned but on the whole it's not a bad album and well worth a listen. Can't quite give it a 4, but I liked it, a solid 3.8 I would say.
Left frustrated and a little disappointed by this. In places, it really draws you in and has you hooked. It’s a fascinating listen and the beat becomes a little hypnotic in a good way. But then I think it gets spoilt by overdoing it!!! Some of the static/feedback sections and outros just go on and on, and plays hell with my tinnitus. A big 3 stars to reflect the really great parts of it.
It was fine and different. Reminded me of modest mouse. Some songs drug, just repeating sounds. My favorite was cool waves and the use of so many sounds that worked in harmony and didn't feel forced. Mixed feelings in cop shot cop. It really rocked out and had a good sound but it just kept going over and over and then got weird.
This is not an album I will want to go back to over and over, but I enjoyed listening to it. The random beeps in the title track, the 15 minute song, and the moments that were noise instead of music kept me from giving a higher rating.
It's made very well, but it's not at all what I'm looking for in music. It's like Beck playing Pink Floyd. Favorite song: electricity.
Listened to this twice and had a hard time focusing on it but I think I liked it
Never knowingly listened to Spiritualized before. Not what I expected, had them down as post britpop. Pleased to say I was wrong. Started very well but became a bit of a dirge towards the end. Will probably listen again.
I can't remember and I just listened to it yesterday...
This was ok but didn’t particularly catch my ear.
Cool, a bit boring to listen actively but nice for background
Kinda cool. then it got weird
It started great, but some parts were a bit too experimental for my tastes.
There was a lot about this I liked, there were lots of ideas and I thought the brass reminded of American Football in places. Listening to it all was a bit of a slog, took me a few days, highlighted by the last track which was about 20 mins long but really just a 4 min track repeated 5 times. They weren't really interesting enough to warrant the long runtime but it was okay.
It's a shame, as there are several incredible songs on here - the title track especially, wow - but there are just too many songs with incredibly long, monotonous outros. This applies to Cop Shoot Cop especially. At several points we would be convinced this deserved 4 stars, then a few minutes later we skipped another song because we got tired of the same looping sound. We would listen again to a lot of songs on this album, but not to the album as a whole.
ziemlich gut eigentlich
Not bad, listenable in a passive manner.
Some amongst were really great, and others just sounded like noise.
This album is ok, those strange noises can get annoying. They are like a cheap knockoff of Radiohead… even they came out before them. Oops.
Much more bearable than the other album they have on this list. Thought there were a few good tunes on this one even if it was way too long
Enjoy the opener with references to "I Can't Help Falling In Love." Kind of song that builds slow and wraps around you with its mass. Distorted vocals and beeps give a (true to title) outer space vibe. Come Together is more straightforward brit rock. Feels similar to The Verve. I kind of spaced out for the next few tracks. Generally nice sounding production, but I keep going in and out of focus. Stay with Me has a nice calm psychedelic feel about it with the layered electronic effects. All said, this is a fine album, but way too long for my liking. Sonically, there is a lot to love. The layering, mixing, and experimentation with sounds and effects are wonderful. The vocals play great complement to the atmosphere of the songs. My main gripe is that I listened to this 3 times, and while there were several high points were I was really grooving, the rest sort of just mushed into the background and I kept finding myself wanting it to be the last song. So for that I give this a confused 3 / 5.
Before even starting, this is a great album name. It sounds like something the Flaming Lips would name a song or an album. A rather mellow, symphony-esque album. Kind of a cruising 3 that gets points for uniqueness. Very spacey and trancey. Last song was a cool journey. High 3!
# Playlist Track - Come Together # Notes - Album starts pretty interesting, but the tail end is just weird and boring. - The harmonies on the title album are pretty cool! - I think it's one of those albums you have to listen to 14 times before you fully understand and enjoy it, but I don't have that time right now.
Trippy. genre-breaking. Very good at times a little noisy.
I enjoy my shoegaze to be a bit more full on, but it was still a decent album overall.
At times I was reminded of Pink Floyd, others of Daft Punk, and others of NIN. I didn’t know what to expect coming into this album and I wasn’t disappointed but definitely have specific songs I’d listen to regularly. Not sure I will listen to the full album.
