It was fine, but didn’t strike me as anything special.
Nothing spectacular, but pretty chill and easy to listen to.
Understated electronica updating of classic bossa nova. Very chill, but it also slips away.
it’s just soooo loungy… not bad at all musically, but i can’t listen to more than 10 min or so without getting bored
Oh man this is the one the guy from that other album on here died for. Its pretty good bossa.
Samba da Bênção - 3.5/5 August Day Song - 3.5/5 Tanto Tempo - 3.5/5 Sem Contenção - 3/5 Mais Feliz - 3.5/5 Alguém - 3.5/5 So Nice (Summer Samba) - 3/5 Lonely - 3/5 Bananeira - 3.5/5 Samba e Amor - 3.5/5 Close Your Eyes - 3.5/5 So this was billed as a "bossa nova meets electronica" but this sounds a lot like bossa nova to me. It's more of a jazz-lite experience, as the actual electronic stuff was pushed to the background. It was fine but nothing I'd even return to. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Unfortunately they all kind of sounded the same so I guess the whole album?
In her 2000 album Tanto Tempo, Brazilian-American artist Bebel Gilberto delivers a solid, lounge-friendly record that leans heavily on atmosphere, even if it occasionally struggles to maintain its momentum. Listening strictly by "vibes" due to the language barrier, the album shines brightest when it embraces its organic roots and slow-burn grooves—the jazzy, dreamlike tension of the opener and the gorgeous, soulful warmth of the fifth track ("Mais Feliz") are easily the record's high points. While the highly anticipated title track strangely lacks the punch expected of a centerpiece, the second half recovers nicely by seamlessly weaving together cozy coffee-shop lo-fi, boutique wine-shop sambas, and a late-album emotional dive into isolation. Ending on an energetic, danceable high note with infectious salsa rhythms, it ultimately balances out to a respectable 3/5 listening experience—an incredibly decent, sun-drenched record that proves good production and strong instrumentation can easily transcend a language barrier.
What a family ! Bossa Nova that was nicely received on a Saturday morning breakfast....
Pleasant listen, especially in the background.
I feel like I should like this album more than I did considering a man died saving it from a fire
A long time.
Bosa nova, nice, it didnt hit that much tho, i really liked that it was both on english and portuguese, i dont hear enough bosa nova to know if that is very common
Sólido.
So. Relaxing. Soothing music that can be consumated as background listening but contains enough details and twists in the arrangements that active listening doesn't bore either. Also, lovely voice in a language I barely hear. Not all of the tracks work the charm in the same way though. All in all: 3/5 - good
I definitely recognize the first track from restaurant or department store playlists around that time. It's nice enough. I like Bossa Nova, I find it very soothing, but I'd prefer just to listen to stuff from the 60's... like her dad and her step mom. A ton of that 60's stuff was immaculately recorded and really holds up. The electronic elements, for the most part, were not interesting enough to make it a new update to the 60's sound or a fusion like say Thievery Corp. 2.5/5 stars - I won't listen to it again and don't think it should be on this list but rounding up to 3 because I didn't really dislike any of it. I added Bananeira to my 1001 playlist. That tune stands out to me because it's got that 90s-2000s Acid Jazz sound mixed in.
Nice. Bit like listening to Sade singing in a foreign tongue but that is not a criticism!
Pleasant. No shade to her that I don't speak Portuguese (?) .
Latin rythyms, portuguese language, acoustic guitar. It's fine, but I don't know why I should be particularly impressed. There must be a context I'm missing. Bananeira is really nice, catchy, relaxed. Best track - Summer Samba, Bananeira, Close Your Eyes 3 stars - but Bananeira nearly brings it up on its own!
Nice chill album with some peaceful vibes. Great voice. Good one to put on while doing some house chores and just moving.
Perfectly medium music. Not bad, but doesn’t really leave an impression. Favourite: Can’t remember…
Solid stuff but nothing that made me stop what I was doing to listen more closely. Good dinner party music or relaxing outside on a beautiful day.
Decent
Good vibes. I want to listen to it on a beachfront resort in Brazil
Nice Bossa Nova. Feels more modern than some other we've had on this list, which I like. Always gets you in a good mood!
Quite a fun Bossa Nova album, not my genre of music but the one thing i picked up was the electonic elements. Felt a bit trip-hop inspired. 3 stars, a chill listen.
Pleasant and easy listening. It’s not groundbreaking, but it makes for perfect background music and is calming and lovely.
Don’t think I would go back and listen to this again, but some of the songs did have a nice sound and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Really enjoyable and engaging samba music with some electronics thrown into the mix. Perfectly acceptable way to pass the time, although whether I needed to hear it before I die us up for debate.
Nice atmosphere. Definitely a Sat night drinks at home record
Sunday afternoon coffee shop vibes. Not bad. 6/10
This samba is a little shiny for me. Also, I prefer when she sticks to Portuguese. Respectfully, of course.
Blame on the Cassa Nova ...
Making pasta while enjoying a glass of wine type music.
This had great instrumentation and production. Like right off the bat that’s the biggest thing that I take away from this album. It’s also beautiful and bright! I obviously have no idea what the lyrics are so I can’t relate to the album on that level but I really loved how pleasant and wholesome this album was. And musically it’s very diverse and creative. Super fun album.
Good chill background cocktail party music.
Very enjoyable
Mh Bossa Nova is maybe not my thing
Gorgeous music
Made for a very serene drive to work. Dead middle between a 3 and a 4
I like the vibe. Wish I understood Portuguese. But it is still nice listening.
5/10 Daughter of bossa nova legend João, Bebel Gilberto’s Tanto Tempo is her first album to receive a worldwide release and saw her collaborating with Serbian producer Suba, who was killed rescuing the masters of this record from a fire at his studio. There’s also work here from Amon Tobin, sampled across the opening track, which was certainly enough to pique my interest. What that results in, to my ears, is a bossa nova take on the nu-jazz sound that was bubbling along in Europe at around this time. As I mention in my track by track breakdown, there are elements in here of St Germain, Cinematic Orchestra and the like, but this is very much on the restrained end of that scale. There are bits and pieces that pick up the groove here and there, but for the most part, this is an album that floats slightly aimlessly, rather than driving forward with any particular intent. It’s the kind of music that you’d enjoy in a cafe, but not bother shazamming, because it doesn’t capture your attention enough to make you want to take it home with you. And after 40 odd minutes, it does become rather repetitive too, which doesn’t necessarily help it. Bebel has a really nice voice, slightly smoky and sultry, but controlled and well balanced, particularly in the sections where she double tracks and adds some harmony and variation to things. The musicians are also very competent without being showy, and everything serves that incredibly gentle cafe vibe really well. Unfortunately, the fact is that while it’s pleasant enough, there was nothing that really stood out to me or stuck with me, even after 3-4 spins through. It’s the kind of music that I’d happily have on in the background, but never fully engage with. Nice, well executed, but a little dull. Samba Da Benção - A really nice, if not vastly interesting start. It has the feeling of a bossanova take on the downtempo cafe jazz electronica that was around at the turn of the millennium like St Germain, Cinematic Orchestra and Zero 7. The backing track to this track is, in fact, the track Nova by Amon Tobin. I enjoyed some of the nuance to the programming in the backing, and the general drifting vibe of the track was good, but not exactly gripping. August Day Song - The shuffling groove here is pretty cool. The playing is subtle but well performed across the board and the dual vocals are a nice feature of the track. It’s quite repetitive though and while it’s a pleasant enough piece to listen to, it does feel a little bit directionless, particularly towards the end where it kind of just repeats and repeats as it drifts away. Tanto Tempo - Another lilting, jazzy number. It feels a little more purposeful in its direction but still has a cool, lazy-day ambience to it. More deft and subtle work, particularly from Bebel herself in the vocal, but she weaves nicely around the piano work too. More pleasant stuff. Sem Contenção - Ah, this has got a bit more get up and go to it. There’s a bit more range between the different sections of the track and the groove pulls it along nicely. The vocal harmonies are pretty too. From a sound palette point of view, the album remains pretty consistent, but it’s nice to get a bit of tempo variation thrown in here. Mais Feliz - This is a bit more meandering. It feels a bit more stilted and not as smooth and subtle as other tracks and I’m felling a bit less engaged and swept into the vibe. It’s just a little bit bland and less rhythmically focused, I think. Alguém - Back to something more overtly electronic in the beat here. It’s another slightly aimless drifter of a song. Nothing particularly bad about it, but a little too repetitive and lacking in much of a hook to centre it around. Even the piano playing sort of floats around, rather than having any clear intent behind it. So Nice (Summer Samba) - As the title suggests, this is pretty nice. It’s got a bit more melodic focus to it and a cool, jazzy air to the playing and production. That being said it all feels a little generic and there’s nothing that would make this particularly stand out among a playlist of similar music. It sounds a bit like the incidental music played in a film when someone’s daydreaming about an idealistic future. Lonely - Another nice but slightly dull and repetitive nu-jazz electronica number. It’s entirely pleasant, but also entirely forgettable and quite blandly repetitive. Bananeira - This one picks up a bit more of an up-tempo groove to it, which helps to pull the record out of a bit of a lull. There are some nice vocal melodies backed up by some flavour from the horns. Vocally, it’s still a tad repetitive, but the groove helps to carry it a bit more successfully than the tracks that just float along. There are some great bits of playing from the band in places here too. Samba E Amor - More lovely singing, more fairly repetitive and unmemorable melodic work. It’s very sparse and tonally very pretty, but it just doesn’t really have anything there for me to grab on to. Close Your Eyes - And we close out with something that has a bit more pace to it, but doesn’t thematically feel like it really belongs with the rest of the record. It’s kind of an odd inclusion, because it feels so out of place, as an track that leans more towards a big band samba sound, but with production that somehow reigns in the extremity of the drive. Again, it’s a tad on the repetitive side and there’s nothing vastly memorable about it.
Gilberto has a beautiful, throaty, sexy voice. Yes, I said it. This music is a little cheesy, a little mellow. The acoustic guitar playing is excellent. Liked Songs Added: So Nice (Sunmer Samba)
Stylish, cool, elegant, and laid-back bossa nova seamlessly blends with modern production, incorporating electronic elements to craft a beautifully dreamy and quiet soundscape.
I hate jazz and particularly dislike jazz vocalists - this is Brazilian jazz, but, still, for me no.
Very calming and easy to listen to. Not a lot called out to me.
Ok
6.5/10 - A new style for me. Pleasant but not something that I would put on often.
A nice sounding album but I don't feel it's something more than easy listening, background music. 6/10
Good enough, kinda dragged on and wasn't too ear-catching, but twas fine.
I have begun to observe that the floor and ceiling of my appreciation of Bossa Nova are pretty similar. In short, I have been getting a similar amount of enjoyment from most everything I've heard from the genre. And it's a little frustrating, because I can tell there is real depth to the genre, but I also struggle to shake the "easy listening" connotation the genre has in The U.S. And this isn't really an exception. Bebel Gilberto is a pleasant presence here, and Tanto Tempo is still as enjoyable as other Bossa albums I've heard. But I still think it's a bit same-y and more suited to background listening. Perhaps even a bit moreso than other Bossa albums I've heard. This has traded the jazz influence I'm more used to for a down-tempo aesthetic, and while Tanto Tempo stands out a little because of this, it also has a sleepier sound than most Bossa I've heard. Alguém and Lonely kind of end up in a unique place, but aside from that, there just aren't a lot of surprises here. As I said, the overall experience is pleasant, it just doesn't resonate all that much for me, and kind of falls in line with other Bossa albums I've reviewed.
Love it
RIP SUBA
Correcto
good portuguese miusuc for a cafe/ chill day when you're cooking
I did not finish this but I will do so later
„So Nice“ ist mausig ansonsten eher Hintergrund mukke
A little diversity in sound near the end but overall just consistently average
Smoooooth
Nice lounge music, easy to get lost in. Hard to tell multiple songs apart but a nice listen
I'm a sucker for some bossanova and smooth vocals, so the first half of this album I enjoyed. The second half got a little too smooth jazz for me. Highlights: "Samba Da Bancao" and "Tanto Tempo"
This was as far as I can tell, okay bossa nova. I don't know enough about it to say "this was the defining album of this genre" etc. It all kind of sounds similar to me. This was easy to listen to and nicely produced, I can't relate to it. I probably wont put it on again
South American Jazz
fine. it all sounded the same. cool that some was in Portuguese and some in English. I dunno I don't see why I needed to hear this before I died.
Brazilian music for those that don't have much interest in Brazilian music. It's fine, but didn't listened anything really innovative, which is something I always look forward for.
Not really my thing, but bossa nova is so cool. This one is smooth, jazzy in the loungey kinda way, it grooves in the most laid back style. Also very sexy.
The English interludes were a little jarring; otherwise this was wonderfully cozy
Inspiring me to be more sophisticated than the basic bitch I am deep down
👏🏼
Some decent bops even if it's not my sort of thing. Bonus star because there's a song called "Bananeira," which is my sort of thing even if it's in Portuguese.
This was a pretty fun listen, but it did fade a bit into the background for me. I found the vocals really strong and the beats pleasant- but I also forgot I was listening to this sometimes.
It was pleasant, if a bit forgettable for me. Probably my bias from not understanding the language, but no great desire to re-listen to it.
Very pleasant. Enjoyed the vocals.
Inoffensive
I enjoyed this one, even though it's probably not something that'll go into rotation at my house. It'd be nice to listen to on a beach with a tropical drink in hand.
It was nice enough but got very boring by the end
A warm and pleasant listen. She has a lovely voice and the production is luscious. Still, it didn’t knock me over, and some of the tracks reminded me of lobby music. Lobby music for a very nice hotel, mind you, but music that drifts to the background regardless. Consider this a strong three.

Music to cook to
Very generic Bossa Nova, but this style is very rarely bad, so...
A generic bossa-nova won't hurt anybody. It was all enjoyable, but all forgettable.
Sounds to me like a Brazilian Sade, which is a compliment. "Tanto Tempo" and "So Nice" were pleasant tracks to listen to.
Like her voice, and the music. I wish I spoke Portuguese. But still enjoyed listening to this as I worked today.
Really beautiful album. Enjoyed it quite a bit - would be great for a casual gathering

Easy smooth beats for easy smooth mornings
Relaxed Latin music
Most of the time I listen to the album from this generator first thing in the morning, occasionally time of day can have an affect on how much I enjoy listening to an album depending on how it matches the vibe, sometimes good and sometimes bad. For this album, it definitely enhanced the experience overall. This is normally not really my thing at all, but having a super relaxing Latin jazz album playing while I did my commute to work was actually really nice. Everything from the soft vocals and the soothing instrumentation was just so nice and chill. I can't bring myself to rate this any higher purely because it really isn't my thing at all, and I would never normally seek out this kind of thing, but I am glad to have experienced it, if nothing else just to listen to something a bit different in a setting where it worked so well, but it's unlikely that I see myself ever really returning to this.
This is different, and I like it. It's bossa nova combined with electronic music. Very chill and calming. I would 100% play this at a fancy, classy suit and tie party with a complimentary glass of champagne.
Beautiful voice and songs. Guitar playing is good and the albums relaxed vibe works well. 3.5/5 Might listen again
A very easy listen. Reminded very much of St Etienne (and I like St Etienne alot) but its genuine rather than the winky irony of St Etienne. Sounds a little dated with its late 90/millenial trip hoppy beats. Very pleasant. Did also remind me of Wii Sports.
# Album Name: Tanto Tempo # Artist: Bebel Gilberto # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Chilled elevator music. Doesnt really move out of gear. Nice voice. Background music only. # Top Tunes: No idea # Would I listen to it again? No
Pleasant, but not particularly interesting. Background music for sure.
Interesting album today. Not expecting much from it, but was pleasantly surprised. Not my kind of stuff, but had a couple of play throughs and enjoyed it. Wouldn't choose to listen to it again though I don't think.
🎧Nice and pleasant
This was pretty nice, very chill. Tempted to give 4 stars but this rating system sucks so I won't
This is light, easy, pretty, and largely traceless: the perfect fictional assassin. Spent 80 pleasant minutes in their presence and I can barely remember their face or name.
Very pleasant and very Summery, one for nicer weather!
Remember playing this in college, mixing it in between my electronica/Indy hip hop sets and my Ñ Alternative sets. Definitely very vibey. 3/5
Some part of this reminded me of some of Yoko Kanno's acoustic tracks on the Bebop soundtrack. I wonder if it's just me because those songs are so embedded in my brain. That's my big takeway after one listen of this today, I do like brazilian music, this was decent!
It’s a snowy day outside, you wake up early and get yourself a cup of coffee. Is it Charlie Brown Christmas or do you want to pretend you are somewhere warm but still fits the mood just right- you turn it on. I don’t know much about Bossa Nova but I do know I like the vibe. That all being said, it did feel pretty limited for me personally to the vibe.
Entirely new to me and I can only find about half of the album on YouTube, but enough to give me a good flavour. Beautiful laid back Bossa Nova album, lovely way to start a Saturday morning.
I liked this, but then I had no idea what was being said. Takes away some of the enjoyment when you feel like a philistine listening to it.
Interesting and pleasant, with some novel beats. 3.5 stars.
6/10
Not something I’d want to listen to all the time but pleasant in the right setting
3.5 stars This is a lovely record. It’s warm, relaxed, and effortlessly transportive...you can instantly picture a tropical vacation, a beach wedding, or a sunset on a boat somewhere warm. There’s nothing here to dislike; it’s beautifully produced and easy to sink into. That said, while I enjoyed it, I didn’t find myself especially captivated by it. It works perfectly as atmosphere, but it didn’t quite rise above that for me. Maybe that’s the point, sometimes an album doesn’t need to be intellectually gripping to be effective. Favorite tracks: August Day Song, So Nice (Summer Samba)
Enjoyed this quite a bit, bossa nova
Sounds very cool and I will listen whilst I’m revising but not mind blowingly good
Brazilian Bossa Nova. Well constructed songs with beautiful music and vocals. Great for background at a cocktail party, but it isn't going to be a regular listen for me.
honestly, sound pretty good. Not necessarily my cup of tea, however, glad I heared it I guess.
Good crossword accompaniment. Simpsons: No
Easy listening 40's louge vibes. A nice background album to work to.
This is probably the highest 3 I can ever give an album. It’s just lovely bossa nova with lovely charm to it. Nice vocals too. I don’t think it pushes the needle too much however.
It's honestly such a nice and easy listening experience, with beautiful vocals from her. Just well-produced Bossa Nova, perfect for my road trip. Nothing too special.
It's pretty.
3/5
Great, now I want to go to Brazil
Sweet but not really my thing
It's nice. It blends Brazilian bossa nova and samba with contemporary electronic production, lounge, and downtempo beats. I don't have the knowledge of the style to differentiate good from bad but it was a pleasant listen. 3/5.
This is a pleasant Bossa Nova album. Is she a Nepo baby? Perhaps… her voice is interesting and the instrumentation is solid. Favorite songs were So Nice, Bananeira, Close Your Eyes, and No Return.
Eh. Not bad, but a bit, you know, lounge around or eat at restaurant music. Can't say I hated it, but forgettable.
I definitely did not get the whole experience not understanding Spanish. Nice chill listen with a good voice. 3/5 stars.
I was not expecting another bossa nova album, but this time a modern one from 2000. Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Joao Gilberto, who did the Getz/Gilberto album (also on this list). On that album, Girl From Ipanema was sang by Astrud Gilberto, the stepmother of Bebel Gilberto. So this is a legendary bossa nova family and this album was one of the most popular albums outside of Brazil in 40 years. It's really nice to listen to and perfect for a lounge setting. It did seem like a more modern version of Getz/Gilberto, but also stayed true to the classic sound.
part of electronica's takeover of numerous musical traditions in the 00s, this is a decent album. having the lineage of one of brazil's most famous musicians probably helped bebel out here, but she is also legit talented. nothing on this album is essential, but nothing is bad either. "bananeira" is the standout track here, a strong mixture of bossa nova, funky bass, and electronic music
Big fan of bossanova and I usually only listen to older music in the genre, but that was an enjoyable modern BN recorded
Sorta confused by this album’s inclusion. Not that it’s bad but more it’s sort of. Generic? Dime a dozen? There are several Brazilian albums I can think of that are more fun and innovative and include samba songs like the ones on here.
Sweet voice. Solid easy listen.
This is a little bit of a jazzy album, it was pretty nice having it in the background, but nothing too exciting. This is what they play at those hipster art galleries, but overall decent.
Smooth tunes for drinking wine and making dinner! Loved this Latin Norah Jones similarity.
This was an enjoyable listen. Tried learning Portuguese for a few months on Duolingo, but can’t say I picked up enough to follow the songs. Either way the music and singer’s voice were pleasing and easy to listen to, I continued to enjoy when Spotify autoplayed her other works.
I have nothing good or bad to say about this, so I will just stick to the middle.
relaxing and beachy, good as background music but not much more than that
Nice background music, pretty enjoyable and chill. Nothing special.
It's another Gilberto! I liked this more than either of the previous Gilberto albums I've heard. Part of it is the better recording quality, but most of it is the singing. It's not that uncomfortable ASMR whisper singing. I guess I actually like bossa nova if that's not a requirement of the genre.
Smooth Brazilian
This is undeniably pleasant stuff. The fusion of acoustic guitar and electronic beats creates a super smooth, loungey atmosphere. It’s easy to listen to, and good for decompressing. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Samba da Bênção - So Nice (Summer Samba) - Samba e Amor
My rating 3
Pretty good, great voice, nice background music
Nice vibes, sounds like being on a beach - but a bit repetitive
As always, because I'm an ignorant American I have no idea what Bebel Gilberto was singing about. The producer (Suba) died for this album, so it's probably a good thing it was so well received. Fortunately, this album and Suba's Sao Paolo Confessions album made this book, so I'm sure that is some comfort to his family. This is the kind of music I would hear in a very fancy restaurant. So much so, I want to instinctively desperately search for the cheapest thing on the menu. I do find it difficult to determine if this is good Bossa Nova music or not, as my opinion is basically: (Person who has only seen Boss Baby) "This movie is giving me Boss Baby vibes." The music sounds good, her voice is good and this is very pleasant to listen to.
2.5/5
Bossa nova which is nice for relaxing on the weekend afternoon
Very solid bossa nova stuff - the production and electronic elements elevates this but Bebel has a great voice too and brings a lot to the table. Very close to a 4 for me
Nice lift music. Can here the influence of / homage to her fathers work
Very pleasant smooth stylings. Greta background for cooking
Enjoyed the easy Latin beat and vocal.
Pleasant. Really interesting that it matches bosa nova with some kind of trip hop elements - I think I like it most when the record leans into these kind of sounds. In the one day listening to it, it didn't massively grab me. I'd like to spend more time with it, but it's not top of my list to go back to either. (crazy sad story re the producer on the Wikipedia. If you're reading this and haven't read that yet then go read it now)
Actually own a Bebel album, not this one, don’t have any idea what the reason I first picked it up was, but always liked it. And like this, don’t understand much of it but it’s just a smooth sound and groove, 3 Star.
I'm not that well versed on bossa nova or samba, but I can definitely enjoy some laid-back, jazzy Brazilian sounds. Her voice is lovely, and the subdued palette/pace of the songs makes for a very chilled album. The slow tracks with acoustic instrumentation have a great tone (like Samba E Amor and August Day Song). There are a couple of faster songs (like Bananeira) that give some energy and variety. However, I don't really know who was crying out for bossa nova to be stapled together with shonky new age tones, mediocre downtempo beats, or insipid piano ambience. Many of the tracks end up feeling like a "fusion" sound, designed to make an exotic sound more palatable for people to buy for dinner party background listening. The more boring and insipid tracks ends up creating a lot of drag, and the album ends up feeling long and dull. 2.5*
Really solid samba album. Some songs in English, which helps. Also a good amount of range, particularly toward the end of the album.
Pleasant enough music that I would never specifically put on but would not complain if someone else did.
Just background music, which is OK
6/10
Very pretty. Could have been from any time. Not memorable.
Could be work music. Not totally my music.
It's okay, decent bossa nova from 2000. Worth the listen, but ultimately forgettable.
I was already sleepy when starting this album but I guess I can’t be mad. The kind of thing I’d expect to be playing in a dimly lit cafe with a lot of plants inside.
yeah sure
Mellow and Mellower. Summer Samba scratches an itch.
Pleasant listen, with a little electronica in the background. Definitely in the "I don't know enough about this genre to make a judgement."
Calm and pleasing samba/bossa nova music here. Fits a certain vibe and setting - great listen on a walk, or some other solitary activity. Music did not blow me away, nor is it innovative in any way - just a good version of what it is. Not clear why it is on this list, but glad to have listened to it.
Favorite Track: Samba Da Bencao
Decent
Bossa nova is enjoyable by design so this is definitely a good album. It’s not really that memorable tho aside from a few catchy hooks. Inessential but nice to have on. Favs: Close Your Eyes
Lovely stuff from the daughter of my favourite Brazilian singer
It's nice, it's relaxing, it fits in the background but didn't really evoke any strong feelings for me.
This one was new to me. I’d never heard of Bebel Gilberto or the album Tanto Tempo, but it is fun to say 'tanto tempo,' 'tanto tempo.' Anyway, for some reason, I was excited about venturing into this album completely blind….or would that be deaf? I’ve never heard it before, so I guess I’m heading into this album deaf. Anyway, it’s a bossa nova album, and I’ve discovered, I really enjoy bossa nova. It just kind of hypnotizes you. Plus, you add a sexy female voice, and it’s straight-up baby-making music. The album was produced by a Serbian named Suba, who died during a fire at the studio. He was rescuing the just-recorded Tanto Tempo album from the fire and died of smoke inhalation. That’s wild. It made me wonder, is there an album you’d be willing to die for to save? Like if Back In Black by AC/DC was in a fire and you could save it, but you would likely die trying, would you do it? For Back In Black? I’d probably do it. AC/DC made so little great music after that, that’s it’s their high mark with Brian Johnson….but I digress. Anyway, Tanto Tempo is pretty dang good. The vocals are in English sometimes and, I assume, Portuguese other times. As I’m just an idiot, I don’t know how to break down the intricacies of the samba or bossa nova music, but I can tell you, I really dug this album. Near the end of the album, there are two songs, one titled Lonely and the other titled Bananeira, and they sound like they could be in a 1970s movie about a sexy jewel thief being pursued by a private investigator with a shady past. It’s just brilliant stuff. With all that being said, did I need to hear this album? Need is a strong word. I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed it. If you like to samba and listen to bossa nova, then you’ll probably dig this too.
Light breezy bilingual type thing
Nice background music album for my walk.
3.5/5
Smooth and relaxing, my dad likes this kind of music so I quite like it too, although it’s not something I reach for often.
Easy smooth listening for my Sydney flight. Though I think in any other circumstances, I would have found it boring.
Best Track - "So Nice"
nice
A good 3, nothing too crazy tho
Perfectly pleasant.
Oh I love Polish
Calming, pretty, pleasant
Well done but not my style
Ok. Groovy international
It was a pleasant album, but didn't really leave much of an impression. The story behind it is definitely crazy. It is fine chill/background music.
Silky smooth. Channels Sergio Mendes
It was mostly an easy listening sort of vibe, although with a lot of French I found it blended together to a point where it passed me by somewhat
Alguem added to my playlist - overall pretty and pleasant.
Prior to this list I had never listened to any Bossa Nova except some in passing. This is my 3rd Bossa Nova album and I really like the genre and this album. It does not reach the heights of Stan Getz but it is very good musically and the touch of electronic music makes it stand out.
Favs: Samba de Bençao, August Day Song, So Nice (Summer Samba)
A la playlist: Sem Contençao, So Nice (Summer Samba), Lonely, Bananeira, Samba e Amor, Close Your Eyes.
lots of fun
Good cooking music
Fun album that helped get me through a stressful day. Quite relaxing and mellifluous.
Pleasant enough bossa nova, though there wasn’t anything that elevated it
Is not bad at all
A fun listen but too mellow for me
This was cool, smooth and kinda jazzy. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine foreign language songs and this ticks that box nicely. Is it one of the greatest albums I’ve ever heard? Nah not really but it was pretty nice
To me Simon and Garfunkel is just OK. Easy to listen to, non-offensive background music. I have never been moved by it as others have, nor do I consider it sleep inducing emptiness as still others do. I don't think I have ever purposefully sought out their music (other than for this site) but have never changed the channel or turned it off when it was on. The best thing I can say about S&G is that some of my favorite songs are covers of their songs by others.
Not bad, but a bit too bland for my taste
Who knew elevator music could be so appealing?
it was decent
I like it. I don’t have a lot of experience with this music so it’s hard for me to pass judgement. I could see listening to this again.
Bossanova with a modern (in the year 2000 at least) twist. Not bad. That album cover is atrocious, though.
3.5 stars I liked it. A smooth listen. I’ll return to it and it’ll probably grow on me. But not sure what else to say.
Enjoyable not outstanding
I've had a Gilberto album before, but that was Atrud Gilberto. A bit of Googling reveals that Astrud was Bebel's dad's first wife. And the dad is João who was a famous Brazilian guitarist. And he has an album on the list too! It's like a bossa nova soap opera. Not my go-to genre of music. Posh background music. Might be on my playlist if I was to open an obscenely expensive café serving Civet coffee and bomboloni. And even then I think I'd prefer the ex-wife's album. Astrud had a vulnerability and wavyness to her voice that added something to the music. This is more self assured, and therefore a bit boring. But it will do in the café.
Interesting bossa nova album. Some good tracks, mostly chill vibes throughout. Bebel Gilberto's voice is excellent for this and really lends a cool flare to the entire album.
7/10 - Bossa nova, great change up, very relaxing
Pretty nice vibes
Very smooth, this is music you can dance to or fuck to. Probably one after the other. I'm not sure I can listen to this on a regular basis, but for what it is, it's very good.
Possibly the smoothest album we’ll get on this list. If you like bossa nova, this is great. I think it’s ok.
I always struggle to rate music who's lyrics I don't understand due to a language barrier. The music was good but not something I would seek out intentionally.
Pleasant but faded into the background
Inget som sticker ut supermycket, men trevligt.
Pleasant if a bit bland. Which is really all I can find to say about it
I got this one shockingly soon after Getz/Gilberto, so my opinion of it is somewhat colores by that. Many aspects of that album remain true for this one, with the exception of Tanto Tempo's more modern production and the absence of Stan Getz's wonderful saxophone. Still a solid collection of songs that I still am unsure of the lyrics to.
Inoffensive bossa nova. Can't complain!
That was a really enjoyable album to listen to.
Not available on YouTube or music other than individual tracks. Difficult to score
This is an album that you would hear in a record store / cool coffee shop and wonder how the heck someone found out about this album. Really cool listen, will come back. Awesome summer vibes - some more dance-y, some more chill vibe-y
Daughter of João Gilberto, pretty solid, like the production
Pretty cool it felt very lofi besides all the songs feeling the same the vibe is awesome. I’m glad I was able to experience this type of music. Highlights: august day song, so nice (summer samba), samba de blanco
Pretty ok. Bossa Nova is a solid genre overall and this fit right in
Great concept & should be acknowledged for wrapping some contemporary electronica around the well-worn bossa genre, but for me sadly the songs simply aren't that captivating; ultimately I'd rather listen to her father.
Although I liked this, I felt like it was a little thin when giving it a lot of attention. In the background, I think it would be pleasant.
I forgot I used to listen to this all the time! I liked it just fine 25 years ago, and I like it just fine today. Fine. It’s fine.
It's weird how Portuguese sounds like Russian sometimes.
Shoulder shrug.
A smooth voice over the highest quality elevator music.
Pretty good, super jazzy, love her voice. Not something I'm probably going to revisit
I find with albums in a language I don’t know to treat the vocals as a musical instrument and base my expectations it as an instrumental. This is mostly in Portuguese with a few tracks in English. My first impressions are that it is a very pleasant, ‘lounge’ style album with an optimistic vibe. They feel wistful rather than tragic. Playful even. I probably wouldn't go out searching for this one but if I cam upon a copy in a bulk buy, I would definitely keep it and play it often.
Bananeira sounded like a song from the Minions soundtrack. All in all, it wasn't bad, but I wouldn't write home about it. This is background music at a Brazilian steak joint.
Not unpleasant but pretty much background music. Standout track ‘So Nice’, doesn’t really shake you and grab your attention, it’s that sort of album. The thing that surprises me most is that anyone found it memorable enough to include on this list
This was a nice and relaxing listen, but did it need to be on this list? Not at all, as it feels like something just tossed in. I feel like the writer behind this list was just trying to find albums that weren’t Brit or American bias to pad out the list and make them look like they were broad minded. There are so many amazing albums from other countries and languages that could be on this list.
I don't have any objection to this album, nor do I have any attachment to this album. Could have been a Swing Out Sister album and my attitude would have been the same--it's nice. I like that Samba is not some anachronism of the 1950s, and Bebel Gilberto has brought it into the 21st century with her production and arrangement here, but I don't at all consider this an essential album.
This was a fun album. I found myself bouncing around in my seat as I listened to it.
Bossa nova en los 2000? Pues claro, no solo Tribalistas tuvieron merecido éxito.
-not bad at all. maybe felt a bit.. unremarkable, especially considering what i’ve come to expect from bossa nova and MPB music -her voice is definitely nice. it kind of reminded me of a trip hop album in some ways -Favorites are August Day Song, Sem Contencao, and Alguem
6/10 - there were parts I liked
Meh. Unremarkable
There's a third Gilberto on the list? Well, I can't say I expected that, but I'm not entirely opposed to it. Yes, between the genre's pioneer, João Gilberto, his temporary wife, Astrud, and his daughter, Bebel, it appears that the Brazilian bossa nova genre has itself a bit of a dynasty with the Gilberto family. Interesting. Here we have Bebel Gilberto's 2000 album Tanto Tempo. It's good! It's probably my least favorite of the three album I've heard from a member of the Gilberto family, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It's got a more modern feel to it with the production, which is neat. The producer, Suba, is someone who I've also listened to an album from for this project. Apparently his death was caused by smoke inhalation from him saving this album's material from a fire. Holy shit. I don't even know how to continue the review after that. Well, I guess I can keep praising the album. The vibes are nice. It's pleasing, I guess. I translated the lyrics and they seem decent enough. This isn't really the kind of album I see myself going back to much in the future, but I'd say it's a pretty decent little project. Not really my personal thing, but I respect it, you know? High 3/5.
Easy listening. I am familiar with Amon Tobin so it was interesting to see the connection here with Bebel Gilberto as I’ve never heard of her.
3/5 i love bebel's voice on this, especially in the slower tracks on this record fav tracks: August Day Song, Tanto Tempo, Mais Feliz
Udmærket bossa nova, lidt for baggrundsagtigt måske
I know Bebel from her appearance on Mike Patton’s Peeping Tom album singing Caipirinha and perhaps this would have sounded better had I listened to it sitting in the recent hot sun supping one of those Brazilian cocktails whilst listening. As it is, the hot sun has turned to a chillier rain. It’s still perfectly passable and she has a great voice but I’ve heard better Latin based albums and there’s really not enough here to lift it above decent.
♫ Listening to "Samba da Bencao" by Bebel Gilberto (Tanto Tempo, 2000) ♫
An album that chuntered nicely in the background as I drove around without doing anything to engage me further. Drifted by, perfectly pleasantly but without any great revelation.
This listening challenge has turned me into an unironic lover of bossa nova. Didn’t enjoy quite as much as Getz/Gilberto, but still a nice listen.
I probably don't have the context or ears to really rate this, but it is a very pleasant listen. Gilberto's soothing vocals are like a soft breeze on a summer's day. The second track 'August Day Song' really caught me, and maybe there's more here that further listens would reveal, but it's hard not to let this album float by like a dream.
Really nice album, sublime and chill. Definitely pleasant and worth checking out. Dreamy vibes
Nice vocals and smooth music. A bit like movie soundtrack or background music for me though.
Listened to track one and liked the vibe.
This is quite pleasant, but I don't see myself returning to it.
It was really bad at first but then it got better. The songs had a nice smooth vibe and it was pretty chill. Still a little cheesy though.
Love this feel. Such a distinct atmosphere it creates
Quite enjoyed the vibe of this at first, though I think the mix of samba and 2000s new age has a bit of a tacky sheen to it. But then it kinda dropped off for me and not a lot of tracks grabbed me. 3.4/5
Chill vibes. This was a treat to work to. Great for coffee shops, slow mornings, cocktails at dusk, or being on vacation in a Latin country. Not terribly exciting or fresh, but pleasant enough. 3/5
this was fine but also a little like i was on hold for a customer service i don’t remember calling
Lovely sounds but it's all a bit generic and plastic sounding plus you have to be in right mood
Emotional I can say no more
Easy listening, a perfect 3
Pleasant enough, nice listen.
Nice background music, but not too engaging
This was enjoyable overall, maybe not necessary before I die, but nothing wrong with it.
I knew of Joao Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto as famous performers of the Bosa Nova, but never of Bebel, his daughter. Very smooth.
I enjoyed it, but wasn’t anything amazing yaknow. I liked it better when she sung in Spanish
Pleasant, inoffensive
A sweet voice and pleasant bossa nova beats. Mostly harmless.
Feels like summer
This was really good, keeping the family legacy alive and well that's for sure. I'll admit my North American ears did tire out a little towards the end though.
Wow, I really enjoyed this. Love the music, love the vocals. Marking this album to listen again.
Better then i was expecting.
Pretty good. Would listen to this passively.
Bebel Gilberto - *Tanto Tempo* I absolutely love her voice. She has a Norah Jones quality when she's more intimate. Which is why "Samba E Amor" might be my favorite track. Just a nice full body Spanish guitar and her sultry voice send my hairs on snd. Still for the most part Vasa Nova is not a fave of mine. I can chill with it with some wine and good company but it's not a go to. Also when the album ventures off the bossa nova she loses the purr in her voice. I'm going for a light 3½ for basically her voice alone. Could have been higher if I was more into the music. Blame it on the basa nova. 7.2 ★★★½
Cool electronic flourishes, nice voice. Overall not my genre. 3 stars
I'm going 3 stars for this. I think it started off pretty good, and I thought the title track was quite good, but kind of got boring as it went on.
3.5
Hey lookies it’s very generic seeming 00s bossa nova. Oh it’s not on streaming what a shame. Anyway… onto any other album.
At times very beautiful , like on Mais Feliz. It’s a genre I struggle with to be honest.
Beautiful…. Will revisit.
Eh
Okay but not really my style. Close Your Eyes was a banger tho. (33 known/72 new)
Did not register all that much with me. The sound is summery and layd back but I didn't spend the time translating the lyrics so no opinion on that. At least now I know a name in this genre.
With the caveat that I don’t think the version on Spotify is the full/proper album, I enjoyed this chilled take on bosa nova.
Not really my thing, but was pleasant to listen to.
Okay
Very calm and soothing. I don’t listen to much bossa nova and probably still won’t unless I’m in the mood for it. But it’s very nice.
I found it a bit boring at first - just unoffensive music to have on in the background, but by the end of the album I was really enjoying it.
sweet and pleasant
Pretty good
