Reviews (page 4 of 7)

What a strange album, I don't know how I feel about it it wasn't necessarily good lol

Prog rock was well evolved at this point in time, and you can hear it immediately here with the violins, flutes, and other eccentric instrumentation. It's lengthy of course, almost to a fault, but I couldn't help but be a little entranced by the musical direction the group decided to take here.

Ik vind dit eigenlijk vooral okay. Het is wel vet maar weet me niet echt te grijpen. Zeker geen slechte muziek maar het is niet het spannendste ooit.

Ganska stökigt. Kul musik dock. Lite som black country, new road fast rockigare typ. Inte helt min grej men inte helt inte heller liksom

I like the mid-years King Crimson the most. This was a step in the right direction, but I prefer Adrian Belew over Wetton. I love instrumentals and generally high-proficiency noodling, but I still require a bit of melody or through line. Some of this is just cacophonous. Of course, that's the danger of being experimental. It can get to be a bit too much pretty quickly. Now, none of this annoys me, but I can certainly understand people not liking it. I'm happy to have listened through a couple of times, but I don't think this album will call me back. I'll listen to Disciple a dozen or more times though, I bet. Probably a 2.6 album, but I like where they went and they are super influential. Let's go with a 3.

The opening track of this record is absolutely wild and left me feeling like I'd listened to 7 songs in 1. It is an adventurous opener full of life and intrigue, if slightly too experimental & random at times for my taste. The rest of the album is still interesting but settles a bit, with some engaging tracks. Ultimately though I do struggle with progressive albums like this that seem to be prioritise quirkiness over the quality of their musical hooks and cohesion.

I found this one more enjoyable than In The Court of the Crimson King. I'm still not totally sold on King Crimson as a whole, but this was for sure better than their debut. Part 1 of the title track is some pretty strong diversity in sound, most of the song is dissonant heavy metal then in the last couple of minutes it changes to something you might hear in a original music score. The songs just in general change direction pretty often and sometimes just changes at the drop of a hat. The violin is beautiful on this album, it invokes the feeling of yearning (e.g. "Exiles.") So, it's not bad, but it wasn't totally exciting. It just felt 'ehhhh' to me. This is an indecisive vote from me. Highlight Song/s: "Exiles"

I really admire Robert Fripp, and his guitar work is what most appeals to me on this album. I only know King Crimson from their more accessible albums in the 80s once Adrian Belew joined, so it was interesting to go back to their earlier work and see where they (almost) started. In listening to this, I learned that the lineup for this LP was almost completely different from Court of the Crimson King, but I can hear throughlines between that and the red, yellow, and blue albums that I know better. I suppose that's all Robert Fripp. Easy Money was a favorite tune on this album, featuring Fripp as it does. Parts I and II of the title track were also very cool. Because I had a hard time listening all the way through, but appreciate what they do, 3 stars.

Its pretty hardcore and raw rock instrumental. Liked it but some songs are too long and not really got into it

not a big KC fan. have heard this a couple of times now and some of it is worth listening to

I like the more straightforward sections. The crazy prog stuff is... There, I guess. "Book of Saturday" and "Easy Money" stand out. Part 2 of the title track has some particularly cool segments. Overall pretty middling for me.

FAVS (top 3): book of saturday, easy money, larks tongues in aspic (part ii) mençoes honrosas: larks tongues in aspic (part i), the talking drum, recording session extact (part 1) é um bom album, poucas tracks mas é longo, acho q se dividisse as musicas grandes ia ficar melhor pq tem umas partes q estragam. boa experiencia nota final: 3.5/5

Not their best but solid prog

not bad either though the mix of many genres in one felt overwhelming in some parts, but not intolerable, at least to me. favorite track's exiles.

Weird but not terrible. I shan’t be listening again

Kind of shite

Prof Rick champs reign supreme

What? Some parts I'd listen to again. Other parts I can do without.

It was pretty good. A lot of the songs went on for way too long, but overall it was pretty good. Overall, I would give this album a 3.8/5!

Reminds me of Zappa. People like this sort of thing in the same way they like jazz.

Again, another fine album from this band. Not usually my style, but once again they manage to get me to enjoy it more than most

Bizarre album name, but this was really interesting. Some pretty wild jams. I hear a lot of Dream Theater on LTIA pt II. Can definitely see that this influenced them.

Nice music but missing something for me

My first full King Crimson album. Not entirely my speed, but parts really do go hard.

Strange album, even after a second listen. Certainly a lot of musicianship involved.

I already know I love King Crimson. While this isn’t my favorite album of theirs, I appreciate its experimental nature. I think the experiment was a success, there is an outline of a style that would be done better later.

Interesting. Maybe a relisten at some point, but a bit out there.

Decent album. Slow, but enjoyable. 3.5/5

I was almost ready to 4* this. much of the album, I could imagine listening during a variety of activities and having fun. some of the tracks got annoying sounding and a bit far out there

Not sure I've ever heard a circular saw used as an instrument before. Oh wait, Sonic Youth. I would describe this album as Cosmic rock. Very spacey and experimental. The recording is great and the performance is well done. There is a lot more bass than I would have thought for this era of music. Would I buy the album, no but I'm glad to have heard it!

The further I got into this album, the more I enjoyed it. The vocals were largely unimpressive, and I wasn't a fan of the aimless improvisation and strange soundbites scattered throughout. But, when the music was allowed to be the actual centre point, I thought it be some enjoyable prog rock. I might appreciate this more upon a second listen, but I don’t find myself wanting to jump back in immediately.

My music taste isn't refined enough to recognize the value of whistles etc.

It's alright, but far from their best.

норм, вайбово, но иногда однообразно, типо джем, в альбоме такое не катит особо.

I normally prefer vocals to instrumentals, but boy are the vocal effects irritating here. Some songs go on too long obviously, but Talking Drum in particular is haunting and I cannot deny the flair and virtuosity.

I went through a bit of a king crimson phase a couple months ago but i never got to this album. There's a reason why some of their albums and others not so much. That being said I do think this album was quite good fun to listen to and good study music. Got me through maths

3.5, cool shit

2.5 stars I generally hate prog rock. But I didn’t mind this. The mix of Arabic was mystical and the balance of quiet and loud worked for me. It’s not something I’d throw on regularly but I’d give it another go when in the mood.

It's weird but not bad, just kind of background music

previously only familiar w in the court of the crimson king.....initially triggered by the aspic but got over it lmaooooo weirdo but enjoyed, fine background for another excruciating morning at work....prob rate 3 but higher 3 know that

some personal issues with this title like the cover art tho beginning / beat of easy money reminds me of that scene in robots where they’re at the factory i think this whole album feels a lil like a movie score, like there shld b visuals attached overall liked the mix of sounds and instruments, different from what i usually listen to

Some really good and interesting, some not so much

Disco conceptual. Exige oídos y cultura musical.

Pretty good

Not enough vocals and melody for my liking but some interesting bits

Enjoyed it, but not my favorite from King Crimson

It was fine. The beginning of the album was good, the second half seemed to drag on more though. A little bit bland, in my opinion. But I do tend to like prog rock.

I liked it fine, may have to listen to it again in the future to fully appreciate it. The melody in Exiles is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard in my life.

again, it's good, just not my jam

Well that was different. It certainly showed my headphones have great separation and range. Enjoyed this quite a lot. Will need repeat listening to really decide. 3 stars. Fave track. Easy money

Sonic highlights include 'Tom and Jerry running around' and 'skeleton playing his ribs like a xylophone.'

Weird one, feels like they got high on their own stuff while recording. There's great bits but also the album kind of overstays its welcome.

3 Stars Nothing wrong with this, but it's not for me. It's fine.

Prog, ci sta e sono in un momento in cui mi piacciono i KC, però va bene così

Whacky

Lowkey just noises for 10 minutes

I would've given it 4 stars if I was high but alas the world isn't perfect

Had niet geluisterd want migraine slay, maar nu gaan we er weer tegen aan

leuke viool!! en verder een goed achtergrondalbum

I was quite in to ELP and Yes and used to enjoy a bit of prog rock. This is the first time I have been exposed to this album and wasn't overly impressed, that's not to say it was bad, it just wasn't great. I appreciate that this was probably quite pioneering at the time.

That experimental type of rock, quality stuff in here but songs too long and a bit too weird

Album was pretty cool musically. It very heavy/hard rock at points. Felt jam bandy at times. It was an interesting album!

Good and inventive but just kinda annoying after a while

Feels like about half a good album, half aimless wandering.

What a wild ride this album was. It was highs and lows mixed throughout but with a coherent theme. The slower parts with smooth singing and guitar solos were great. The parts that felt like they were freestyling and plucking the guitar, not so much. Certainly experimental though.

I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy this. Whilst I like the complex and ambitious, I’ve little time for the noodly and indulgent. This always stays on the right side of the line for me. Whilst there is a lot going they keep coming back to central ideas that focus your thinking and keep you grounded

It's fine. Overlong which is normal for prog rock, I guess.

I like this. Full disclosure, I was doing work and it was playing in the background.

this was ok, still not a fan of long songs, did not like when it got high pitched like metal scraping metal

Odd, almost like a soundtrack to a strange, quirky movie. Small bursts of 70s rock fuzz every now and then, too. Not bad, but don’t think I’ll listen again.

Interesting progressive rock - not bad.

Interesting. Early prog rock

Overall, wasn't amazed but a solid album that kept to its theme

not my type of music, but has some nice chilled intros

Lots of noise. Some of it good. Some of it great. Most of it meh.

what i would play to impress cleopatra

It's bookended by two tracks that are long and experimental.

It's chaotic. I like it, but it sounds like something that would be more fun as a jam session. In fact, it reminds me of the days my ex had a band in the basement and they would spend hours all just sort of playing and vibing off the other. It's not that they were terrible, it's just that the music is funner for the guy in the studio. Although, they were actually terrible. So maybe this is it done successfully. Or maybe that's a bad metaphor.

Hell yeah, now we're getting weird with it. Another one of those bands I've never sat down and intentionally listened to. While it can be hard at times to do that while not on drugs it's worth it when the grooves settle in. The fathers of prog rock can at times sink into the more grating parts of the genre for me (a bunch of disjointed segments that never really let me settle into a groove), but I was able to get past it most of the time.

This was actually pretty cool. “Easy Money” is kind of Floyd-ish. I would really like to give it a 4 but I just can’t.

This is a pretty good time if you like goofy meandering prog. I dig it.

Not bad.

it’s pretty cool, a lot like pink floyd. i do wish there was more of a chorus in the songs

Quite enjoyable

some wonderful heavy moments with Fripp and Bruford both sounding great. A lot of dreck as well

I'm glad I stuck with this past the first track. I like it so much better than I expected, and "Exiles" reminded me why the Roches wanted to work with Fripp. 3.5

I thought I liked this more....but that was when I was much younger, dating someone who was really into King Crimson, and doing the occasional hallucinogens. They don't really speak to me now, but still the top of the list in prog rock.

Perfectly nice if you weren't expecting songs, or even necessarily music. I actually liked it better than the usual prog noodling.

not bad aber bissl zu steil for my taste

riconosco la grandezza muscale e l’importanza storica, ma troppo strumentale per i miei gusti.

Challenging but enjoyable.

That was some very quick return to King Crimson. Unfortunately, a downgrade too

It's at its best when the bassist settles into a groove. I liked the violin overall as well. A bit too much noodling around for my taste and I don't think we needed to raid the percussion drawer for every wacky instrument in there.

Pretty good, and I see why Claypool likes them!

ELP wants to give you a wizard battle. Yes, at its heart, wants to please people. King Crimson wants people to do math problems. I like it, but I imagine the wonkiest album by the wonkiest band is a big ask for a lot of people when there are those great Adrian Belew-era King Crimson albums out there.

319/1089 - I don't know how to say this without sounding pretentious but I'd rather listen to classical music than prog rock which sorta emulates classical music. I understand that King Crimson is important and started the genre and everything but I really appreciate the more jazz-influenced side of prog like Yes or Rush. Prog Rock that sounds like classical to me is kinda equivalent to the uncanny valley of animation where something is almost the real things but isn't quite there so it ends up being bad. All that being said, they're all competent players and the drummer was in Yes so that makes me appreciate this more.

appreciate prog rock, but it's not my vibe.

Væsentligt bedre end "In the Court..." Starter godt, men kvaliteten daler lidt i de sidste par numre.

Aspic ‘-‘😏

Some of it I really enjoyed. Some I really hated. So I’m going down the middle like a coward.

Didn't finish this one but it was cool

Sans être complètement nul, c'est quand même très pompeux et prétentieux tout ça.

There really are better King Crimson albums.

I loved In the Court of the Crimson King, and there were a few rough spots there. This album is universally lauded, but has the most sessions where I have to physically stop myself from hitting the "skip" button.

Fine, goes on a bit.

It's a bit of a mixed bag

I like king crimson but this isn't it

Not my favorite by them but definitely worth a listen. The violin added some interesting depth to a few of the songs. King Crimson is very hit or miss for me. The songs that hit are amazing and the songs that miss are a little tedious.

Wasn't thinking very much of this until I read one of the reviews saying it's a headphone listen. It is. So many more layers and complexity to it. Still, a bit too much of the self-indulgent crap that prog rock is always guilty of, ie) two minute long meandering intros to 10 min long songs. TIghten it up King Crimson!

Len Houmous actually has Robert Fripps tongue in aspic in his home. All as a result of one of Len’s famous acid trips that went horribly wrong! 3.2 1/6 Larks Tongue In Aspic (part 1)

No private session used for Spotify. I have always considered myself a progressive rock fan; however doing some deep dives of the genre made me realize I liked the more commercial side that came out it : Trevor Rabin era Yes, Phil Collins on vocals era Genesis and Billy Sherwood out of King Crimson and fronting Asia. Listening to those albums there is is flourishes of progressive rock, but a fair amount more meat of popular music. Back to the album, I like it, but won't put it on heavy rotation like Asia's first album that mixes prog rock with commercial rock.

Give me that backwards guitar on Book of Saturday every day.

Another English version of American music who I never got into when I was younger.

no one knows what it means but it got the people going

Rather proggy. "Exiles" has cool moments. So does "Easy Money" which gets a lil' funky along with sprinkles of foley sounds and interesting percussion elements; sounds like a weird cousin of Pink Floyd's "Money." "Talking Drum" has a appropriately righteous groove w/ driving bassline, bongos, and instrumentation that keeps things moving forward, very in-motion song. The 'Lark' songs both have cool moments too, especially when it gets crunchy and almost metal-y. Prolly a bit too proggy for me to return to, but I dunno, might check it out again. It's cool throughout. It's just proggy, so it does a bunch of stuff and changes a lot. You know, prog shit.

Anything prog usually doesn't gel with me but this was nice enough... I doubt I'll revisit it but had beautiful mood and texture to it, kind of gentle folky/jazz/classical vibes

Suprisingly interesting despite being excessivly proggy. It has some great parts, but on the whole it's not something I really need to listen to again.

This is one for decent headphones. Bit over indulgent at the start/end

I didn't expect to be listening to King Crimson today, but the 1001 albums to hear before I die project had other ideas in mind for me. Other than In The Court and Red, I am pretty unfamiliar with what else King Crimson has done, so I am walking into this project completely blind yet hopeful it will impress me. While this album may not as flashy or as well structured as Red or In The Court, Lark's Tongues in Aspic is yet another very detailed and thought out Progressive project from King Crimson that will really having you leaning forward in your seat for a proper analysis. I am starting to feel that maybe Prog Rock is not really as up my alley as I'd originally thought because I found Larks' to be quite plain and not nearly as compelling as a whole 46 minute adventure. Yes it has moments on the title tracks Part 1 and Part 2, but a lot of the middle work really felt like quite a step down. I appreciate all the thought put into the instrumentation and design of this project, but it really didn't do a whole lot for myself other than give me something to think about for 46 minutes. Really bummed I didn't like this more, but oh well I guess it wasn't meant to be.

Can't beat King Crimson when it comes to class prog. Eccentric, exciting, certainly a worthwhile listen. perhaps compared to their other albums it isn't much however

Ist mir zu experimentell gewesen

Didn't manage to finish but enjoyed what I heard of it

This was interesting. I enjoyed some of the trippier guitar sessions.

Some cool drumming. Occasional misophonia provoking sounds. Some goes pretty hard, fortunately not so long as some of these things get.

Probably wouldn't run back to it but enjoyed it.

This had a lot of cool parts but nothing with the immediate holding power of the other album I listened to by them. A more focused headphones listen may do more favors, but I wasn't feeling the noodles today.

This was a bit of a slow burn, it wasn’t instant to me but opened up to me as it went on. Probably one for repeated listens, and I would listen again given chance but not sure if I’d be rushing back.

While not my favorite King Crimson album, this one definitely hits all the King Crimson beats. The large swells in instrumentation that hit you 4 minutes into the opening track fill the void left by trickling noises. Classic prog. Vocals weren't incredible, but that's not why people are coming to King Crimson. They come for the jazzy rock that keeps you guessing where it's going next. I enjoyed this album, but it's not breaking any existing idea I had of the band. I give it: I still prefer In the Court of the Crimson King/10

I may have liked this one more than the first one from the list, which I think is their most popular. Super proggy. Cool stuff.

Not too bad for a walk around the circle

Love me some king crimson & I think this album shows how experimental forward they are as a band. It’s not their best work though. There was an a hint of dare I say bashfulness here if not only to try and not be everything in the court of crimson king was. I get it, but I do prefer their other work. Gave me ELP vibes at times

Irgendwie eine weniger überzeugende Version von Pink Floyd, konnte mich nach dem ersten Hören nicht überzeugen, 2 1/2, schräger Titel, ich runde auf.

Technically fine and there’s a few songs I really like individually. Overall as an album it just doesn’t leave a mark on me though, and the hagiography of JM throughout my life predisposes me to shrug the effort off

Overall: 5/10 As a King Crimson fan, I have to admit that I've never really been a fan of this album. I find that there's just not enough going on for me to latch on to for a majority of the runtime. There will be these big moments of fun that are almost always immediately followed by a bunch of nonsense. I would have rather had Discipline on here to be honest. Fav Song: Easy Money

You know, this wasn’t my personal favorite, but there were a lot of interesting musical things going on here.

Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, wouldn’t listen again as I’m not one for longer prog rock songs and this could’ve basically been one long song, but it was a pretty interesting listen!

This is an album that does a lot of really cool stuff but has never left too much of an impression on me. There are a lot of pieces I like but as a whole I have never found myself coming back to it. My opinion didn't really change on this listen either.

I remember kinda liking the first King Crimson album I got. This one I'm not sure I necessarily liked, but it was interesting?

It a vibe

Not as good as the other Crimson album on the list

3/5 pretty good stuff on here and a queens sounding riff

These guys sound like what would happen if a dealer mixed up Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd's drug orders. Plenty of acid either way. It's definitely interesting, but I'm not sure how much of that crosses over to a pleasurable listening experience. It's not totally unpleasant though either--it definitely has its moments. One of those albums that one listen probably doesn't do it justice. There is obviously a lot of musical talent here. Easy Money is a cool song as is Talking Drum. Probably a high 3/5.

A little drier but still enjoyable in the background

There are some great riffs and lines in here, but they never stick around long enough to get lost in them.

I still don’t know what to make of prog rock as a genre. This is the second album I’ve heard by King Crimson. Pretty good, kinda weird, sometimes interesting, sometimes forgettable. So, three stars. I am reserving judgment for now.

It's King Crimson, so you either like them or hate them. I like them, but this one is not my favorite. I give a three.

A little meandering at times (not unexpected/unwelcome), but when it locks in it goes pretty hard.

I actually liked the other King Crimson album better than this one. This was a bit more out there. It was cool to have on in the background, but I probably won't listen again.

Listening to this, I can hear its influence. In every song there are hints of what would be emulated in decades to come. I didn't enjoy it on its own merits, but I appreciate the role it plays in the history of music.

Some neat bits, but long-winded in that way only prog rock cane be at times

I don't mind prog, but this is just ok. Nothing really stands out, and it's instrumental, so no cool lyrics.

Got a lot going on here. Most of it I liked alright.

Standard jam band album, it's good but not for me.

Kinda fun, but goes on a little bit

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: 20/1001 There are probably numerous high intellect ways to describe what exactly Larkss' Tongues in Aspic is. If the name itself doesn't immediately confound you, the first track and each subsequent one will. There is no beat that maintains, no tempo kept, it's a constantly evolving album full of various sounds, beats, changes, melodies, and sometimes pure confusion. It's not an album you just throw on in the background, it's not one that has any song to grab you, but it's a collection of work that when fully engaged in you have no choice but to appreciate the artistic mastery within. In some ways it was more akin to listening to a stripped down orchestral performance. It was music brought to life without a picture to accompany it. There wasn't a story though, there was just persistent experimentation and trying new things. It works, but it's certainly not for everyone. I don't think any song here will ever make its way to my playlists. I can't even give a podium rating without doing a disservice to this body of work, but perhaps one day I'll pick it up again to continue identifying the various aspects, of which there are countless, once again. It's hard to track, a bit stretched out, beyond pretentious, but it's quite good. It's deserving of a listener who is only engaged in this album itself and not anything else. It necessitates it. If stepping out of the box is your thing, this is an album you would certainly appreciate beyond more casual listeners such as myself. I find myself at the most extreme crossroads of rating for raw talent vs. my own personal enjoyment, and the two cancel out to give Larks' Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson 3/5 stars.

I’m confused on this one. I’m aware of King Crimson and Prog Rock so it’s not out the ordinary for me but idk how I feel about this one. I liked most songs but there were annoying sounds throughout the album which just thru me off but was also a factor that kept me enjoying the songs. Favourite song was Exiles and Book of Saturdays then both being shorter songs with actual words. Yk it wasn’t amazing but I did enjoy. I will not be returning to this one and I’m giving it a 7/10 3.5/5

I disliked it less than I thought I would.

Too much fuckery on this one. Exiles was very good though

Never heard it before. Some of my favorite bands were probably influenced by this. It's good, but I like the bands they influenced better. At least some of them. This sounds too 70s for me. Favorite song: larks' tongues in aspic pt.2

I'm a King Crimson fan, but never got around to this one, so thank you list. Other than Part II of the title track, I was disappointed. I'm generally not a fan of violins used in a jazz-like setting (excluding Jean-Luc Ponty), so I wasn't into a lot of this. Liked Songs Added: Larks' Tongues In Aspic (Part II)

is very interesting, the mix between rock and classical music is really cool, i like how they experiment with the music

Weird, but I don’t hate it.

This album is like midwest weather. If you don't like it, wait 5 minutes and if you do, then not for long. 5/10

SUPER-prog. At times, it's almost classical music. The musicians are amazing. Tony Levin is the man. I never really spent time with this band, and the barrier to entry is quite high if you're not expecting it. This album weird. Good weird, but not super accessible. I would listen to others by them, but likely won't return to this.

Either this is a work of brilliance or a mess. Not sure which one yet.

I know they're an influential early prog-rock group, but King Crimson has always been second fiddle in my mind behind groups like Pink Floyd. Still, I can see the inventiveness here and admire their desire to experiment and push boundaries.

Pretty good, not my kind of music but some fun instrumentals for a talented band.

A bit of a struggle but some good stuff in there

Sonic texture is what springs to mind. All sorts of textures. Rough, smooth, squishy, solid.

While more interesting than other bands in the prog rock canon, with classical instruments, major jazz influences, and a dearth of lyrics about wizards - this still didn’t really hold my attention. Great musicians though. High 3

COME BACK AND REVIEW THIS!!!

Best Song: Book of Saturday. Nice vocals, and maintains the prog rock feel without having to indulge in a 10 minute meandering mess. Worst Song: Meandering Drum. A song that really thought it was doing more than it was. The titular drum was cool, but didn't play as much of a role as it ought to have. And then it concludes with this annoyingly spastic burst. Overall: It's alright. Doubt I'll listen to it again, but I didn't hate it.

Not as good as Court of the Crimson King, but decent enough.

Not as fun as the title track suggests. Pretty cool record though, fun grooves but as with all prog bands has a tendency to drag after a while

Some really beautiful stuff in here but you have to wade through a lot of noodling to get it.

I think I need to be a little more wasted to get into this but not bad. Our group got a Yes album yesterday and if we're pitting prog vs prog then King Crimson for the win.

Not thier best, but OK

I thought this before I read it in another review, but it hits the nail right on the head. Too much Prog not enough Rock. Easy Money is a great rocky track. Worthy of any Pink Floyd album. But the rest is a bit stop/start. Good meaty bits and then a lot of fucking about. And often when the green shoots of goodness start to poke through, they are stamped on by the grade 3 violin scraping in. I gave this 3 listens and the good bits were growing on me. But I hope Fripp fired the violinist 2½

Not as good as the court album

Gear: Moondrop Variations Artwork: 🌞🌒☀️ Production (Expanded & Remastered Original Album Mix): 🎧😘🤌 Music: 🎻🔥🌀 Rating: 🐦🐦🐦/5

Challenging listen. I had to put this on a few times to get in mood for classic prog. Worth it though, this is rewarding if I'm in the right mindset. Lots going musically.

D tön vom Larks sinere Zunge hend mi no wohlig gstimmt. Paar lieder denn wider eher experimentell-orientalisch aber het mi alles gar ned fest gstresst. 3 halbliideschaftlichi Zungeküss

Öpis anders, viel diversität, aver qu nöf bahnbrechend. Gämer dene peeps 3 kings

Dense. Very difficult to find.

Kinda reminiscent of Pink Floyd, but without any standout tracks. I’d like to check out one of their more popular albums sometime.

This was good background music while I worked.

I think King Crimson are as close as I'm going to get to finding prog bearable, on this list.

Look kids Art Rock! Pretty sure I’ll hate this, let’s find out. I’m sure it’s hard to play.Vocals are unpleasant. 11 minute opener with a pretentious title. But actually sounds pretty good.

Interesting variety. Like the recording extracts

I haven't heard a full King Crimson album in forever, especially this one which I don't think I ever heard in full at once, maybe because I wasn't patient back then with the weirder and more angular but also exploratory into adding some more ambiental sounds which makes you wait for them to play something weird to then segue into something more prog, but since it's KC it's going to be the best prog has to offer, especially on "Easy Money" and "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part II" which are easy demonstrations of why KC are so cool and have more bite than many others (Book of Saturday... not so much). This may not be my favorite King Crimson album, but it's enjoyable all the same

This is just not for me. Prog jazz rock feels like a chore.

Disappointed to say the least. This band is truly hit or miss. Probably due to all of the 'lineup' changes. This is the kind of prog that people hate. I am NOT one of those people but this collection is overrated at best.

It just gets to be a bit too abstract at many points. Very few if any ‘grooves’ throughout the entire thing. Definitely not a bad listen but not my favorite as well. 6/10

2.5, rounded up

Nice kinda mystical instrumentals. The lyrics, though, are meh.

Pitäisin tätä sietämättömänä tekotaiteena ilman Pyryn valistusta

Read a bio before listening so had a few misconceptions. Happily all smashed as found myself really enjoying the random unexpected moments of this.

In between the chaotic bookends of “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic,” there’s some real beauty hiding in this album. The violin work is gorgeous, and tracks like “Book of Saturday” and “Easy Money” show a surprisingly melodic, human side to King Crimson. “Book of Saturday” in particular is lush and intimate, a quiet oasis in the middle of all the metallic clatter. Yes, the opening and closing pieces are rough, noisy, and more than a little unhinged, but once you get through the wrapping, there’s a genuinely beautiful little present inside. You can hear the underpinnings of future prog‑rock all over this thing. My Rating: Solid 3/5

bem mais doideira do que eu esperava. ruim não foi, mas prog ainda é um assunto delicado pra mim

It was alright. won't listen again.

I’m on the fence with King Crimson. These songs can be very interesting. Book of Saturday is short and emotive, and Easy Money almost feels like a great sister song to Pink Floyd’s Money, but then you have that loooong opening song that seemed ALL OVER the place. I was so ready to write this album off after it, but it got better quickly. On The Talking Drum, the intro moves at sludge pace getting warmed up before a bass groove finally comes in to make it interesting. Then it segues right into the last song which was cool too. I’m just not sure that I love prog music. It has great intentions, but it rarely gets pulled off enough for me to be thoroughly WOWed. I guess I’m just spoiled by the timeless perfection of Dark Side of the Moon.

If you pay attention to all the parts individually, it’s a pretty cool album. 5.5/10

This is heavily based in classical music like most progressive rock of its time. The musicianship is great and the music itself. I prefer Greg Lake's vocals with this band.

This are clearly talented and ambitious musicians, but I did not really connect with anything on here. Instrumental prog rock is too much like classical and not enough like the blues for me and I think that creates a barrier for me in enjoying this type of music.

can see how this inspired a bunch of folks. good stuff

Another classic from KC

great playing but that's it

Enjoyable in parts - bit meandering but appreciated that it was meant to be

The Good: The sound a lark can make with it’s tongue! The Bad: Aspic acts as an irritant, not a soothing agent… The Ugly: That the lark was being choked while singing… This was a first and, honestly speaking, one that I was kind of looking forward to, as I am a fan of Pink Floyd, and was curious to see what the real prog rock founders sound like. This is not a first where, it becomes obvious, that one needs to really take the time to listen to some of these albums prior to making a judgement call. This album, for example, at first listen, gets a 2* rating, potentially lower, depending on your state of mind. Regretfully, I haven’t had the chance to sit down and really listen to this album so that I can properly form a judgement… So, as I am certain that the oddness factor of this album will be something to intrigue me down the road, I will reserve a 3* rating, and, once I’ve had the proper time to listen to this album, hopefully, I will re-rate this… but don’t hold your breath.

As is typical with King Crimson, the technical mastery on display completely outshines most of the sonic enjoyment for me. I want to grab on very much, but the amount of harsh left turns is a bit too disorienting; almost like when you know exactly what you want to say, but you're struggling to form a complete thought for some reason.

Good listen. (25 known/53 new)

Cool! More proggy than I'd typically go for, but lots of fun ideas on this one. Found some moments a bit grating and a bit too unserious, but it's a very impressive record. Can't be mad at it. More of a 3.5.

mjög flott production, stundum leiðinlegt, en hef alltaf meira og meira gaman af king crimson.

Grogg Progg

Kom mér á óvart. Mestan hluta áhugaverð tilraunatónlist, en döll prog inn á milli.

Lots of highs and lots of lows. That's how prog rock usually works for me and this is no different.

Unique. Early balls to the wall prog. Influential. Difficult at times.

A completely new discovery for me according to Last.FM, not a single King Crimson scrobble until today. It grew on me. It blended into the background to begin with but by Larks’ Tongues In Aspic (Part II) I’d become a bit more intrigued by its progressivity. I would listen to them again.

Pretty good

Some interesting noises here, and I can hear their influence on other bands I like. I respect King Crimson, even if they're not fully my taste. The songs on here are a bit too meandering and overlong to sustain my interest despite the occasional stretches I vibed with. If technique was all that mattered, I'd give it full marks. I need something that connects with me beyond that though. I even gave it a second spin, hoping my feelings toward it would change, but no such luck.

I can't help but feel that the first track is a sort of litmus test. If you can sit through 13 and a half minutes of directionless noodling you're going to love the rest of the album. This did grow on me a little with repeated listens, and I can see its importance, but it's not something I will ever listen to again.

I don’t hate it. Some cool ideas and sounds. Some horrific sounds and tedious parts as well. Overall I liked it more than I expected after the opening 3 minutes.

Very interesting sound design, but at one point it just gets me tired. Great album though.

Not bad, not good. Okay.

Heard of king crimson but never listened before. Kinda like spirit or yes, which have both been pretty great. There are parts of this that are really good, but then parts that are far too meandering and slow. . When is good it's good, when it's not it's not. 3, shouldn't think I'll be back

Lark's Tongues In Aspic is definitely one of the stranger albums i have done for this project, more so than the last King Crimson album i did. It definitely seems that these guys are continuing the trend of combining different music styles but i remember the first King Crimson album i did having jazz elements which this one does not have, instead, picking really weird elements. I'm in an odd situation when it comes to how much i like this album. The guitar playing in a lot of the tracks is cool but the weird elements can definitely get a little too much at points. Its not a bad album, i just prefer In The Court Of The Crimson King to this one. Best Song: Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Part Two Worst Song: The Talking Drum

Listened to this while playing Imperium: Legends. I lost, but barely. I definitely enjoyed this album more than I enjoyed the album title...ha ha. It started out kinda Reich-y, then suddenly 70s rock. I liked the album closer as well...i think. It's been a few days.

7/10 A mixed bag - really liked quite a lot of it, but it was interspersed with periods of unenjoyable noodling. Back half was better. Extremely good musicianship, they got a vibe across. Production sounded great for the age it is. Preferred this to Pink Floyd, not as good as Yes for me. Best: Larks' Tongues In Aspic pt 2

(Teacher): Fripp! Pay attention in class. And stop that doodling. (Fripp): But sir, this doodling, as you call it, will one day make me rich and famous. And earn me a spot in 1001 albums. (Teacher): Good heavens above, don't be so absurd boy! 1001 albums is for REAL artists and REAL music! Beethoven, Chopin, Val Doonican that sort of thing. Eh what! (Fripp): I'm pretty sure it's about rock n roll sir (Teacher): Less of the back chat Fripp! Rock and roll is absolute claptrap. Anyway, one should think about getting a real job, like a plumber, or an accountant or a teacher. And for heaven's sake, get a haircut cut boy! (Fripp): (mawkishly) yes sir (Teacher): Mind you, that thing does make some rather groovy sounds! Where does one purchase this? (Fripp): Um, maybe Woolworths, sir .... It's well worth it. (Teacher): (Jollyumptiously)Yes, indeed. Rather indeed!!

Ambitious, but falls a little flat. Nothing bad, just not great. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

Suffers from the classic prog album curse of trying so hard to be weird and ‘progressive’ that good songwriting is sacrificed. There were some great moments though, and I did enjoy the twists and turns of the title tracks. Overall not as good as their debut.

Sounds like a spring day laying in a meadow...

I think I like this one too, but not as much as the one a few days ago. 3/5

Sorta epic and both groovy-heavy and heavy-groovy, certaintly a milestone and highly influential (on everyone from Rush to Metallica to Dixie Dregs) but also sort too out there and illogical to get one's head around (WTF with the screams to shut down one of the most pleasurable-satisfying sections). One's all for bold experimentation, also for knowing where to draw lines, set limits, rein it in, give listeners a chance by giving it a rest. The heavy metal opener seems too much to take and not for great effect, and the closer versons (part III) works much better. The artier and more ambient/chambery stuff is best – “Book of Saturday” and “Exiles," say. "Easy Money" points the way forward to jam band. Ultimately, seems overdone, willfully obscure and difficult without really offering the payoff for the effort listeners are asked to put in (but that's prog, one supposes). Gotta round down for mainly self-inflicted excesses.

When I first played this I had King Diamond in my head, and throughout the first half of the opening song I was picturing that crazy painted guy jingling keys and messing around in an elementary music hall, creating one of the most unsettling mental images since I saw Pennywise in IT. Then I realized King Crimson was not a painted metal singer at all. They are now a band I'll have to look more into. Progressive Rock is often a label that goes on a lot of the niche bands I like but don't really have any other way to describe them. Some of these longer tracks I'll have to give another listen, but the Larks part II was one I kept checking the title of to make sure I remembered it, and that it didn't change to a new track. Otherwise I didn't keep track of the others and some went on a bit too long or had too long of a skip section. Favorite track "Larks part II" 3/5

Some parts were nice. Some were too chaotic for my tastes. Some odd high pitched noises reminded me of bats.

Felt like a ride through an epic fantasy land

Definitely something to just sit and listen to, with headphones on. I would have hated it, except my love for Rush extends to a love of prog rock, and I know that KC was a big influence on Rush, and now I can see why and definitely see the influence on Rush. I'll give a 3, but won't listen again.

3.5 good had some good instrumtal type rock

3.3 2x nice sound (extended 1h7m)

I have heard of this band but never really listened to any of their stuff. I do think I know a couple of tracks, and I am familiar with their style. This gives me Mars Volta vibes. It's a very cool band.

Eh, it's got a few moments of fun grooving but overall it didn't really move me a lot. 3.5

Cool, prog rock is prog rock

This is a blend between like classical and classic rock. Like if Pink Floyd would collab with Mozart or something. Some good moments but still missing something.

Must admit I couldn't get through this in a single session today. It's interesting and fairly challenging. Some proto-krautrock/math-rock mullarkey going on. Did I like it? Sometimes. Am I a big time convert? Not really.

pretty cool stuff but not something i would listen to on a regular basis, very experimental

Was this album 38 minutes or 380 minutes? I don’t know, I fell into a prog hole.

Beyond progressive Art abstractions run amok In roaming, wild work

6.5/10

This was fine. I reckon you must need to be a very particular kind to give it 5/5 but I was expecting the worst and it was far from that.

Good, but I like 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' a lot more.

Not nearly as good as their most popular one

Lyder godt men In the Court of the Crimson King >>>>

Wow, they moved a long way away from In the Court of the Crimson King. This is a little too free-Jazzy for me to love

I like the idea of prog rock, but very rarely do I actually like it! This one almost does the job, plenty of random nonsense and rambling lyrics.

I haven’t heard this for years as I recall being put off the first time. But I was actually pleasantly surprised by some of it. The more experimental kinda proggy type stuff like a fair bit of the Larks tongue parts lacked enough cohesion and were a little too experimental/wanky for me (albeit had some nice chunky riffs occasionally). But where they played more jam style grooves (with a touch of Krautrock), like on Easy Money and The talking drum, it was a great listen. Kinda had me thinking of the influence on bands like the Ozrics and Earthless (albeit different genres themselves). I can see myself listening again.

It’s a prog album baby, break out every instrument ever made and set aside a half hour per track because it’s time to get nuts. Not my favorite prog album, but still very fun. It lacks some of the catchy highs of things like In the Court of the Crimson King but remains a fun romp.

Easy money was a cool song. I loved the angular guitars on Lark part 1. Park part 2 had its moments. Everything else was anywhere from boring to bad.

apparently it's said that this is "impossible to dance to" which means it's one of very few albums that i personally understand how to dance to

i like it, actually

Hmm, not really my thing sorry.

Too meandering and deconstructed to be my favourite prog, but still quite good. 3.5 stars

Progressive rock with lots of different musical sounds. Really interesting if not a bit nerve grating at times . I enjoyed it in short doses

It's a pretty cool album when there's actually music being played. The amount of times I had to check to make sure I didn't accidentally pause the song was incredibly high though...not really sure what the intent was with that

3.2 stars rounded down

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Progressive rock usually means long, rambling jams of various tempos and a marimba or dulcimer here and there, and there certainly were elements of that. But they kept it under control, and the only thing keeping me from rounding up my 3.5* is that I’m not likely to listen to it again.

Interesting but not something I'd go back to.

This is just a 3* for me. Much like a lot of jazz, I just don't get this. It's not particularly enjoyable for me to listen to. I'm just not as proggy as I'd hoped to be.

It has all the makings of an insufferable barrage of prog rock schlock. Perpetual time-signature changes that induce a state of schizophrenia. Distended song lengths which, far from caputuring the imagination, leave you wondering what the fuck happened to those last fifteen minutes of your life. The hokiest lyrics which mask their shallow pretensions under the bravado of someone who’s read two chapters of a Philip K Dick novel. You can check all of these off the list, and for me that is as close to auditory hell as you can imagine. But this record also has Robert Fripp. And that man is an absolute genius. Unlike their petuli oil enthusiast contemporaries, King Crimson’s music (and particularly this record) has clearly left a mark - partly because it still sounds fresh on the production front. Not even the generations of holier than thou math rockers this album clearly inspired can make me dislike it. Because it sounds fresher than most of that musical circle jerk ever could. At points towards the album’s latter half Fripp conjures a bewildering array of sounds from his instrument which have gone on to pollinate the music of artists across the musical spectrum. Seriously, some of his lines wouldn’t sound out of place on the first Siouxsie record. Of course, its ostentatious nature means this record periodically meanders into the background. But if these guys wanted to, they could have produced a truly great record (I mean, it is truly great objectively) . Instead, King Crimson came up with a surprisingly good one. For this layman at least.

Is this prog rock w/ an edge?

Good early prog album, nothing really stood out to me though

Another prog album that sounds like a prog album and confirms why I I really like and really don't like prog albums

Intersting Post rock

I'm sure I missed some things here. Some cool stuff going on, but I found it average overall. I would not be opposed to listening to this again.

Nothing really pops

drunk fuckery, it might bite off its tongue

Great, not KK's best, not my personal favorite, but still totally enjoyable

Larks' Tongues In Aspic has a tough opener for the modern attention span. I'm sure back in the day when you put the needle on the record you were ready to soak in the chimes and slow burn into the song in ways that are difficult now to even imagine. The track, and the album, reward a patient listener. Just a shame that they are more difficult to find. I include myself in this, I'm no longer as patient as I once was when it comes to my listening. Let's say if we faded in at the 3m mark I'd still have been looking around for 30 more seconds wondering when we were going to get to the jams. And this test of patience and attention span is everywhere: a little violin break here, some kind of pause or quiet moment there. This is the downside of progressive rock / music in some regards. And yet, of course, it is also its immense upside. If you take the time and make the space for it this music can be very rewarding to listen to including, and especially because of, the more challenging moments. And yet, and yet, this isn't my favorite King Crimson record for a reason.

I love it

Outstanding instrumental use.

Classical music paired with rock. It's not so much fun to listen to this music on the side. But if you listen consciously, the album takes you on an exciting journey.
