The list yields a discovery. Decent album and not what I was expecting from Goldfrapp, but honestly it’s there, I guess, like everything else they made that wasn’t Strict Machine. Pleasant enough, but this list isn’t 1001 albums you didn’t listen to from 2008.
Astonishingly good. From earthy pagan psychedelia to glacial disco via pure pop. I don't know how they did it but they did. Outstanding.
This is an example of why you should judge an artist off an album and not a song. I was surprised to see an album on this list from 2008. Maybe that's not a shocking thing but considering the vast amount of music from even before the 90s that should or probably is on this list... I was pretty intrigued. The first song... I was immediately bored. "Another artist emulating Joni Mitchell" is what I thought. The as the album went on, it got more synthy. Not just another typical folk album . The vocals are well layered and haunting at most times. Very dreamlike. Very minimal instruments aside from synth and keys. But the vocals are what shine through. As this record went on, I kind of wanted it to be over already. Not a lot of diversity in the songs. It's very pretty. But it's very much of the same. I went from bored, to intrigued, to thinking "wow this is a lot better than I thought it was going to be", to "when will this end?" My first thoughts were to give this a low rating but I had to listen to it a bit more. It's definitely not bad but it's outside my interests. I most likely won't ever listen to this again.
Pleasant singing and warm, laid back music. Was expecting upbeat electro like Moloko, so received this more thoughtful and mature sound well.
Totally uninteresting. Didn’t care for this one at all. I liked the feel they were going for at the beginning, but that’s about it for the first few tracks. It picked itself up about half way through, but then fell back down for most of the remainder. Really came back strong on the second last track, but then the last one was still just kind of uninteresting. I had high hopes for this album but I don’t ever feel like revisiting it. 4/10. Would be a 3/10 if not for one song being significantly better than the rest. Top 3: 1. Caravan Girl 2. Eat Yourself 3. Some People

It's fine. All fine. Had it on in the background and it was all very soothing and calming. But isn't this meant to be the greatest EVER? Some recency bias here I suspect.

Ooh this is splitting me down the middle!! I have never listened to anything but the hits from Goldfrapp and I don't know what I think about listening to an album... It's very dreamy and chill sounding, the sounds are really delish including Alison's voice. I really love the song A&E and I loved listening to the rest of the album but apart from A&E none of the other new-listen tracks actually stood out to me at all in particular but as a whole they did and I listened twice. I like it when I can pick out some lyrics or sounds in particular which stood out to me though or if it tells some story so it was lacking in that department even after two listens.

I already liked Goldfrapp a lot and A&E has been such a favourite of mine for years! Listening to the album in full was wonderful - lots of songs I didn't know very well which I'm glad to have given time to. I love the variety of styles of the album and the warmth to it all. Really interesting and clever I think. Will keep listening!
I do like Goldfrapp but don't love. This was pretty good but it's not something I'd listen to often but when it's on the radio I'm quite happy

Eh, not quite my style.. too mellow
Too quiet. Too mellow. Forgot it was even on half way through. From a period where it seemed to be everyone’s agenda to try to make atmospheric, anthemic, seminal albums. Rubbish

This duo and their music are all new to me, and I think this is a really good album. These enjoyable and interesting tracks are very well-composed and performed superbly. The vocal work is outstanding, their sense of melody is strong, I love the harmonies, and I am impressed by the overall arrangement of each tune. Very, very skilled group here. Nice.

its alright i guess. not my type of thing but there were a few songs I enjoyed for sure. Little Bird is beautiful and the breakdown at the end is amazing. solid background noise album.

The only song that I was familiar with theirs was "Strict Machine", which I enjoy. I liked the vibes from this album. Easy to listen to.

Sounds like an album intensely insipired by “The Beach” soundtrack. Completely decent but I probably won’t ever return to this.

For someone's supposed first attempt at this style of music it was really quite well done. Some of the songs sounded a little samey but that's just par for the course when you're going for an almost dream like feel. Would listen to again Stand out songs: - Some People - Monster Love

Really liked this album! Cologne Cerrone Houdini was my favourite song. This artist has a beautiful singing style, her vocals felt very... breathy and melodic.
I was a little disappointed by this one. I already knew and liked “Happiness”, but that turned out to be it. It was still alright though. I wonder if Felt Mountain is on this list— maybe I’ll like that one more.

This morning I saw the words that I normally dread - "English electronic music duo". Usually this means 8 minute long, repetitious electronic soundscapes on an hour and fifteen minute album. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised to find actual songs, with actual song structure and actual singing. Unlike most other electronic music artists, in this case the electronics are there to support the song, not the other way around. Really enjoyed, will listen again. 4 stars.

Don't think I've listened to this album before, and I can't help but be a little disappointed that it's not the ethereal trip-hoppiness of "Felt Mountain" or the electroclash of the two albums after that. I guess I should let artists evolve as they see fit. 😒 I'm sure I'd grow to like this more with repeated listens as her voice is still absolutely lovely. Fave track - "Cologne Cerrone Houdini" sounded the closest to my expectations of what Goldfrapp should sound like, so that one...

An absolute mood. Starts off really well, but trails off into a blurred nothingness. A sunny day, getting a bit too hot and sticky.

Goldfrapp seems to endlessly reinvent themselves. I listened to this album with interest since I didn't know it, but I have to say, it doesn't come close to the power of 2000's release of 'Felt Mountain' whose song "Horse Tears" has captivated me for the better part of a year (a discovery for me). If you were nonplussed by this album and are fairly new to this band, don't stop here, because there is a lot of variability between their albums. Seventh Tree lacks that kind of power and seems like an interim album until something more brilliant comes from their wellspring. Listenable, pleasant, but none of the earlier power.
Understated drama and a frictionless glide.
I've heard a few Goldfrapp songs, but this was my first wider exposure. Alternatively dreamy and wistful, then joyful and driving. I enjoyed it. "Happiness," the only one I knew before, and "Caravan Girl" were the highlights.
My introduction to Goldfrapp was through Head First, and pop forward synthy extravaganza. I like it better than Seventh Tree…at least from two listens through. It grew on me quite a bit. Now listening a third time using hifi headphones, I’m liking it even more. This down tempo, more subdued sound works for me as well.
Like a lot. Pastoral, downtempo. Hints of Vashti Bunyan and 70s folk. It washes over a bit but I like the ride.
First listen to this one. I thought I would hate it, but I didn't it. She has a really pretty voice that kinda drew me in.

What a strange suggestion. Given that I'm not even sure to include *Felt Mountain*, Goldfrapp's debut, in my own list, I have a lot of trouble considering this later album of theirs seriously. *Felt Mountain* was already a patchy effort, some great moments mixed with quite a few snoozefests, especially those dreary instrumentals on side two. *Seventh Tree* is more cohesive in comparison, it's true. But replacing valleys and peaks with flatlands does not necessarily mean your band has improved overall. Besides, I've always found this project quite opportunistic, as great a vocalist as Alisson Godfrapp is. *Felt Mountain* was already like an afterthought of the trip-hop wave, never really reaching the heights of a Portishead in its neo-noir aesthetics. It was too late AND not enough. The 180-degree turn towards dance music in the following LPs also looked suspicious, like a money grab. And the quieter, smoother *Seventh Tree* released after this dance music period tried a little too hard to capitalize on a glossy version of the psychedelic wave that was surging again by the late naughts. A lot of acoustic textures, especially on the first side, allowed the band to do so while keeping their cool. But those textures, as nice as they are, can't make up for what's missing in this record... And what's missing in it? Well, memorable songs, for starters--or at least more than a couple of them. Striking melodies and unforgettable harmonies... And along with that: clear intents, a strong identity, genuine risks, heartfelt or witty lyrics... Pandering to the trends of the day doesn't necessarily give you those types of assets. I have nothing against "followers" (some of them did write essential albums once in a while), but for those, the songwriting needs to be top-notch. And well, said songwriting is just *OK* here. "Clowns" is the understated opening statement that's to be expected in that sort of *quote-unquote*, "more-authentic-album-aimed-at-a-more-mature-audience". "Little Bird" is the missing link between the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" and Beach House's "Zebra" or "Silver Soul"... but sadly, it is doomed to remain a passing footnote whenever someone has to mention those other legendary songs. "Happiness" seems to recycle the lessons of Feist's hits "My Moon, My Man" and "1234", released the year before, but without anything approaching (or even approximating) the soaring hooks and emotional choruses of the latter, unfortunately. Less lively but equally tedious--in spite of an interesting lo-fi guitar sound and the Billie Holiday overtones in its introduction--"Road to Somewhere" leads to nowhere fast. And "Eat Yourself" applies its piece of advice so well that the song instantly fades out of your memory as soon as it is over. Up to this point, only "Some People" does have anything ressembling a proper chorus, even though it's still lacking something that would bring the song to yet another level. Don't get me wrong, Goldfrapp doesn't write and perform bad music per se, and more power to you if you can appreciate what they do. It's just that "decent" is not the sort of thing that can keep you awake at night, is it? A couple of more straightforward songs towards the very end of this album--incidentally leaving aside the acoustic-psychedelic flourishes so prevalent in the rest of the tracks--show that Goldfrapp could still be a little more convincing when their heart was into it. The problem is that before those two tracks, the pop-rock diamond-in-the-rough "Caravan Girl", and the part-angsty, part-dreamy "Monster Love" (sounding like a proto-Lana Del Rey torch song about Hollywood and its many dangers), you also have the chatty MOR FM borefest "A&E", along with that very awkward "Cologne Cerrone Houdini". In those two other unfortunate cuts, Godfrapp even commits the crime of confusing style with substance, either through their excessive reliance in pop's hackneyed formulae for the first example, or through their heavy-handed borrowing of Serge Gainsbourg/Andrew Loog Oldham-like strings to painstakingly try to disguise how vacuous the second song actually is. To put it in a nutshell, successes and duds even things out at the end of this LP. And before that, there's nothing too lively happening anyway, in one direction or another. So if you wish to single out genuinely *essential records*, I'm not sure this innocuous LP filled with a lot of forcibly understated / *actually very naive* cuts--well-suited to be played as background music in a Starbucks--is what you're really looking for. Your call. 2/5 for the purposes of this list. Which translates to a 7/10 grade for more general purposes (5+2). Next, please. The first song made me think I was in for 45 minutes of "girl who sounds like a wounded bird," but she pulled out of the nosedive. Some interesting stuff, but little I'm going to go back for later. Best track: Caravan Girl
Good but not great. There's decent songs here, but production is so overblown (mostly) that they struggle to be heard. Better than I expected from them at this late stage of their career, but a bit of an unnecessary inclusion on the list in my opinion
Pastoral weirdness.
20th June 2023 Listened during the day while working from home and a little in the evening. Chilled evening watched French Dispatch. I loved this, it sounded like walking home on a summer evening.

This album had so much potential, but ultimately did not live up to it. The first few songs were really engaging but then the album began to drag and the songs started to become indistinguishable from each other. The music and vocals were ethereal but just didn't pay off in a satisfying way.

Ethereal and light. A sweet soundtrack to a breezy holiday. And of course the inimitable vocal flavour of Goldfrapp. Not as mind-blowing as Felt Mountain, but I’m sold.

Beautiful album, played this on repeat when it came out, and I was delighted to see it appear for me today. A detour from the previous two synth pop albums, and an expansion of the sound. If you like this, try 2017's Tales Of Us.

day 7. A pleasant listen with a little darker/moodiness underneath, which leaves me feeling like there's more to chew on than what seems to be on the surface. Ex A - Happiness, super upbeat but gives serious culty vibes. At the same time, as soon as I finished listening I forgot what everything sounded like, and had to relisten to a few tracks to remember what my favorites were. I was not familiar with Goldfrapp before and now I kind of want to listen to more, but I don't know that I'll be running back to this album. 3/5 Faves: Little Bird, Happiness

Dig this dreampop vibe, was a solid zone out album on plane ride watching the sunny clouds. Seems pretty layered and lush and decent hooks. Nothing that memorable though, but would revisit and rotate into some playlists.

I didn't /dislike/ this, but I found it to be overall rather uninteresting/uninspiring. Caravan Girl was by far and away the best track, and I was hopeful it signalled a turn for the better as the record concluded.... but alas it was the single bright spot.

Very "meh". It's an electronic album with layers of symphony, but no track really stands out and everything blends into each other. Extremely forgetful and of its time. Shocked this is on the list, and I would argue it's not even the best Goldfrapp album.

I expected a great album cover with just crap music, but it was good at the end. Nothing remarkable, but far from annoying.
Goldfrapp was a new artist for me and Seventh Tree was all new music. I enjoyed listening to the album. The music didn't sound a lot like typical things I might listen to, but the album still held my attention. The music seemed like it would fit in with Dido, Natalie Imbruglia, or Michelle Branch - not that it sounded like those artists exactly, but the music would fit in. A few tracks had some good energy and I bookmarked to listen to again ("Little Bird", "Caravan Girl", "Monster Love"). One track was verging on a skip ("Cologne Cerrone Houdini"), but it did not have the same sound as the rest of the album.
Ethereal, whimsical, sophisticated rhythms and a fascinating combination of sounds. It feels experimental in a way. Overall I really liked it.

The only exposure I had to Goldfrapp before today was hearing A&E right near the end of Now That’s What I Call Music 69, so I had no idea what to expect going into this album. The opening track was absolutely beautiful, and Little Bird and Happiness were both incredible as well. The album dragged a little in the middle for me with a couple of less interesting songs, but on the whole this was hugely enjoyable and I’ll definitely be diving into their catalogue

I appreciate the elegance of her voice and the soft nature of the entire album, there are truly some beautiful moments. It just feels like it drags on a bit and lacks some moments of dynamics to bring it up at points. Beautiful sound though.

Should’ve listen to it a long time ago
So I knew Goldfrapp but I didn't quite realise Alison Goldfrapp's voice could be so lovely. From the first 10 seconds of Clown my head (ears?) was turned. Got a new fan, which is all I can ask for.
I like the vocal and instrumentation but the songs are not interesting.
Gave it a listen and found it pretty similar to some tracks I've heard from Air. It's not my cup of tea but I was able to get through the album without much fuss. Nothing really caught me in terms of wanting to listen again. Overall average for me and I probably won't come back to it.
Not really sure why I'm seeing so many people claim this album is homogenous or just vibes. While the delicate and dreamy atmospheres definitely play a huge part in the sonic identity of Seventh Tree, it's the core songwriting that shine through for me. There are also quite a few moments where Goldfrapp lets go of just creating serene vibes and comes out with some banger synthpop beat which really set this one apart from other albums in the same genre. Not at all boring.
The problem with doing these reviews in a stream of consciousness fashion while I listen to the records is that sometimes I end up writing a mini-novel, other times I got nothing. This record was fine, but I didn’t find it very inspiring.
I didn't hate it
Hate that I can't understand what she's saying most of the time - why even bother writing lyrics? I almost stopped after the first four songs. better songs: Eat Yourself; Some People; Caravan Girl.
Pitchfork kinda took a dump on this album. Apparently this is a folksier style for this artist, and they're usually known for clubbier pop (I've heard the name but couldn't really place it. I think maybe I recognize it from a FIFA soundtrack? If so, the clubby bit makes sense). Anyway, I didn't think it was all that bad. I ended up saving 4 songs which is more than I usually leave an album remembering. It was pretty pleasant but had a few songs that built really nicely. Standouts: Little Bird, Happiness, A&E, Caravan Girl
Really nice album, some good songs and altogether a pleasant listen. Not sure it should make any best ever lists but nice all the same.
This was an interesting album to get. I've never heard Goldfrapp before but have definitely seen the name and this album cover at record stores, so I wasn't sure what to expect at all. I liked this album, it has good vibes. I'm interested to hear some other albums by Goldfrapp considering the wiki says this was a big departure from their more electronic/dance albums. I would definitely listen to this one again. Not sure that it will go into my library but I wouldn't turn it off if it came on and could see myself Shazaming some of these standout tracks if I heard them in a movie or at a restaurant. All in all, good album. Standout Tracks: Clowns, Little Bird, Eat Yourself, Cologne Cerrone Houdini, Caravan Girl, Monster Love.

Great album!
The second encounter for me in this list with this interesting duo that I’d previously never heard of. I can’t recall if I had this issue with the previous one but this is marred by some very muddy recording/mixing on some tracks. I like this generally and Goldfrapp herself definitely ranks now for me as one of the significant singers of this era of pop music. I feel like my regard might increase if I spent more time with the lyrics which I wasn’t really getting on one go around.

I don't know if I was just in a mood today or what but this hit just right. It's beautifully recorded, the vocals are for the most part delightful, and there's an intriguing aesthetic at play here with mostly traditional arrangements balanced with elements pulled directly from dance electronica. It's pretty dang good. The only reason that it doesn't get full marks is that it gets SUPER navel-gazey at times and I know, in a different mood, that'd piss me right off. But today? Today it worked.

I lost track with Goldfrapp after the first couple of records, which was clearly a mistake. This is a beautiful electro folk album which I'm sure to return to. Best song is Happiness, just ahead of A&E
I never knew that Goldfrapp were reputable enough to be considered for one of the “albums you must hear before you die”, but here we are. To my knowledge, I’ve only ever heard Ooh La La before today, which is not on this album. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: A&E I remain confused at the inclusion of this album if a list of supposed essential albums. There was nothing interesting happening for the most part, with only occasional songs that were at least half decent. Even my favourite song from the album A&E isn’t really a song I’d bother going back to listen to again. On the whole, I don’t really see the point of this album. It’s not unlistenable, but I still can’t really think of a reason to listen to it by choice.
The dreamy and flowy melodies from Goldfrapp show off her range as a vocalist. That being said, the songs are largely a blur and none really stan d out from the rest in a notable way. All of the orchestration and production has resulted in a great product, but not one that should be considered essential.
Yet another one where I have no option but to chalk up to "it's here because it's English". Bland, inoffensive "dream pop" that went nowhere. Every song exactly the same. 10bpm. yawwwwwn. 2/5.
New artist to me and this album sounds the best since it’s less electronic and more mellow
Another attempt to sing like a bird that ended up sounding like a kettle. Apart from the nice buildup in "Little Bird" and the folksy summer sound of "Clowns" (what the heck are those vocals though?), this album is a bunch of terribly sung folk tunes over forgettable electronica beats. So, yeah, the mentioned 2 tracks basically saved this from a 1 star rating.
I loved Goldfrapp's first album; it was retro and modern in a way that hadn't really been done before. The follow-up went in a new electroclash direction that was just as good. Somehow, I never heard this, but it doesn't feel quite as adventurous as the first two albums. Instead, it plays it safe with Radio 2-friendly pop.

Reminds me of Cocteau Twins and I'm a big fan of this genre in general. Dreamy, chill.. a great album to listen to on a cold and rainy Saturday morning. "Happiness" was beautiful. One of the best new songs I've found through this so far (300 albums in, time flies dude!)

Is Goldfrapp the Lenny Kravitz of the electropop? Many of their albums have the perfect sound and always contains a good share of strong songs but also sound a bit too much pastiche. A good example here is Cologne Cerrone Houdini: very obvious references to 70s euro disco (not only in the title but also the Amanda Lear way of singing etc). It is a 5-star song so great, but I am a little less keen on all those English folk references and usually go for a different Goldfrapp album. Overall score: 3.5.
I thought this was quite pleasant sounding upon the first listen, but in the second round it already started to feel a bit empty.

I almost didn't continue to listen after the first song, but did. And it got better, but. It ended up being an easy, non-offisive album. But in the scope of the name of this project, I feel no different afterward and will not remember anything about this album.

Brilliant sideways move into pastoral and gentle psychedelia. Synths are gentle washes and pulses, a move that absolutely suited them.
What a boring album. It was only 45 minutes, but half way through I thought to myself it needed to be over. It was not. The lyrics remind me of indie music, but there is more electronica to the music. Uninspiring and unmemorable.

Hooked from the first tune. I’m surprised I’ve never heard of this artist. Sufjan meets Enya meets Pink Floyd, hints of The Beach Boys and the Beatles, with a little bit of indie edge sprinkled in. Pleasing reverby vocals, synths from every era, cool key changes.
Smooth sound. Pleasantly surprised.
This one felt like listening to the same song for 40 minutes. Pleasant but exceedingly mediocre. 2/5

A dreamy sound and a departure from the future electronica sound Goldfrapp usually bring, Alison’s vocals soar over lush arrangements. Occasionally straying into CocoRosie territory but nevertheless still a perfectly relaxing album.
Really, really dull. It's kinda pleasant in small doses I guess but this kind of music isn't really my thing. There was one song that stuck out (Happiness? I don't even care enough to look it up) that was pretty good and stood out but this was a "it's just there" album. Ultimately I have no clue why it was included, but I can see some people really liking it

I’ve always loved Goldfrapp but haven’t heard this album. What a surprisingly chill album. I like it but wanted something more upbeat. I thought I would enjoy it better if I was in a chill mood.
Very dreamy. Sounds just nice. But for the expectations of this list it's a "damning with faint praise" type of situation. This might grow on me with repeated listens, but at first it didn't really grab me. At its best, like during "AE," it sounds remarkably like a Joni Mitchell song.
It's like a pastiche of Serge Gainsbourg, soft prog and Fairport Convention and I'd rather listen to any of those. I like Goldfrapp generally, but this was ten goodish songs, none of which I especially fancy listening to again. It feels like the sort of CD that people own to show off their classy taste, which probably has a thin sheen of months old cocaine on the jewel case. Good hat on the front cover though.

Removed again. Yeah fair enough. Felt Mountain is obviously great, Black Cherry is possibly even better so if a 2nd Goldfrapp album is going in it's 100% that one, I love both those albums and regularly go back to them. I stepped off though at Ooh La La because it sounded just like Train but without the character so I thought, ah, out of ideas. So I never listened to Supernature - I think I may have listened to Seventh Tree once as it cropped up in year end lists but it definitely didn't leave an impression on me at the time. So, here goes... Will this be another lush, sumptuous album you could just drown in... or not? And the answer is.... Well the first track is certainly gorgeous. More than a hint of those sweeping John Barry strings that have always hovered around their sound. To be fair, it stays good. Not the same impact as those two albums but enough to encourage me to check out their later stuff and give this a listen again.

3 I really liked the sound of a lot of songs on this album, but I also don't feel like they imparted much of a lasting impression on me. It almost felt like an ambient album, but a good ambient album at that... like a lot of these songs would go hard if used effectively in a movie or show. The songs that utilized strings (like Cologne Cerrone Houdini) were definitely the standouts for me over the more electronic ones. Very much feels like a situational listen. Some really nicely written relaxed pop stuff
I liked this, but every song started to sound the same after awhile. The only real standout track for me was “Happiness.” I was optimistic about this album at first, but every song felt like it hit the same mood, so I doubt I would listen again. Also not a fan of her breathy singing.
A&E is the absolute standout track on this.

This was an effortful listen. I didn't particularly enjoy any of it - the vocals or the dreamy electronic music. "Caravan Girl" was better but the whole thing fell flat for me.
Goldfrapp is another group I had not listened to before now. Apparently, Goldfrapp was a duo who performed, produced, and mixed this album with a slew of guest artists. While i appreciated some of the production value, this album did little else for me.
I relistened and on the second go I actually found it was nice having it on in the background while doing stuff.

I was familiar with their more dance-tronic material as well as the 2000 release that had a James Bond vibe happening and more in-your-face, eclectic instrumentation to offset Goldfrapp's airy voice. This is more mellow and understated by comparison. It was brave to release this after a chart-topping dance album. The subtle songs and elegant production take a while to grow on you, but I like it. Between a 3 and 4 for me.

Voici ce que j'en ai déjà dit: "Je n'étais vraiment pas dans ce mood là lors de ma première écoute. Une fois en meilleure position pour écouter cet album, je trouvais que ça ne décollait pas. Ça a pris l'arrivée de la batterie dans la pièce Little Bird pour commencer à être intéressant. Ce n'est pas un mauvais album, il y a des sonorités intéressantes, mais il n'y a pas une pièce qui se démarque et qui me donne envie de remettre l'album. Peut-être que le groupe a d'autres albums plus originaux, mais pour 2008, c'est un album générique de folktronica qui ne réinvente rien."

A very interesting album. It has a vaguely ethereal feeling to all the songs, many of which have honestly fairly depressing themes. That being said, all the songs in the album were great to listen to, if you happen to be in the right mood for this sort of music. Standouts in the album for me are "Happiness" and "A&E", both of which hit very good instrumental and lyrical themes that honestly keep you paying attention to the music.

i only knew goldfrapp's music from supernature. this album was a complete departure! and i like it. it's serene. actually, it's surprisingly serene considering the variety of topics goldfrapp covers on this album. it's a nice easy listen, almost like you don't have to pay attention to the lyrics, but the lyrics are beautiful. each song is unique and has such purpose. overall, a lovely listen that i can't wait to come back to.
This album was folky, ambient, and dreamy, but not so much so that I was bored or lulled into sleep. Elements of indie-pop and electronica keep it from being too lo-fi and ultimately help to break up most of the monotony that can come with albums of this type. Based on what I already know about Goldfrapp, I like how they were able to blend some of their typical, more dance-oriented elecrontic style with this more ambient genre. Ultimately, I think they did a great job doing it. I don't usually review the album art unless something specifically catches me. Well, let me just say that before hearing this album, based on the album art, I thought I was going to be in for some weird swashbuckling, sea-chanty indie music. I was thankfully wrong about that. Road to Somewhere, A&E, and Cologne Cerrone Houdini were all standout tracks for me!

I have enjoyed the other Goldfrapp projects that the Album Generator has given me. Not this one as much. It's got the chill vibes and pleasant sounds I enjoyed in the past but unfortunately tips into boring pretty early on. Personally I would not have included this album on this list. Nice hat, though.

Got some Joni Mitchel vibes from the opening track. Not sure what she's talking about though - hard to decipher, but the song's called "clowns" and I heard the word "titties," so I'm guessing this is some condemnation on cosmetic surgery and fake appearances - which I can dig. Or maybe I'm totally wrong. Very nice song though. The next two remind me of Electric Light Orchestra, especially in the case of "Happiness" sounding like "Mr. Blue Sky." This album is growing on me, which I did not expect. Next the album strolls into Pink Floyd "Dark Side" territory before really settling in its own thing for the final few tracks. I will definitely come back to this album from time to time. Good stuff!
