garbage

Wtf was dit

Meh, dit vind ik niks hoor

Her voice is terrible and the music is poor.

No thank you! Hated this, the whole album is one long complaint

I was never a fan of Nico. She has an interesting voice, but her songs seemed to have been more spoken than actually sung. She seemed off-key, and if not for her association with Andy Warhol, I doubt she would have received any recognition for her musicianship.

Nope I not hearing anything good here Left wondering wtf is this on the 1001 Best Album list The music is not good, and there are thousands of female singers that I would listen to before enduring this

Was Warhol being provocative...getting a perverse joy out of seeing people fawn over pretentious garbage?

I always thought Nico was a male vocalist from Amsterdam as my only familiarity was their association with The Velvet Underground. So it was a pleasant surprise to see she’s a female singer from Germany. But Chelsea Girls is a little too artsy for me. She surrounded herself with some very well known musicians, the best song is Jackson Browne’s Somewhere There’s A Feather. (1.35*s) It seems to me that Nico was in to right place at the right time and hanging out with the right crowd to make it in the music industry. I’ll watch the movie Chelsea Girls if anyone is interested.

Andy Warhol must have really seen something in Nico to produce her solo stuff, put her in his movies and get her involved in The Velvet Underground. From my angle I'm not sure what he was so infatuated with. Maybe there's something interesting about her character in person, but her vocals and musical presence are rather lackluster from my point of view. Chelsea Girls has a minimalist approach that gets played out and boring pretty quickly. I haven't enjoyed much of the prior Nico exposure and this only further cements it. Warhol continues to prove the mediocrity of nearly everything he associated with. 1.08 stars

Jesus, was ein Album. Dann noch der Wikipedia Artikel das die Sängerin wohl Nazi und Rassistin war....

Möchtegern Jethro Tull. Langweilig und gleichzeitig schmerzhaft für die Ohren.

Oh my, is this a joke?

Just really not interesting to me - Nico plus string instruments was not a recipe for success.

Um, no thanks.

I did not like her voice.

I listen to these albums first thing in the morning and write the review about 24 hours later. In that short amount of time I’ve basically forgotten this album existed.

Beautiful music (guitar, violin & other strings) but her voice is droning & causes every song to become a durge.

Melancholy garbage. I appreciate the song These Days (St. Vincent's version is top notch), but Nico was right, the strings and flutes make this album almost unlistenable.

I don't get her. Doesn't have a good voice and I'm not keen on the songs.

Absolutely awful. Terrible voice, boring songs, horrific random flute throughout. Worst album on this list so far

Vocals alone drop this down to a 1-2 star album. Add the pretentious new renaissance style and it drops it even more. Not for me. What a stupid list - shit like this is grounds to leave. This made my wife nauseous and she’s not preg

I’m sorry but she can’t sing. 1 star just for the vocals. Don’t even get me started on the flute and terrible feedback sounds on that one song.

Chelsea Girls went on so long that I thought I had died and been put in a hell where I had to listen to Chelsea Girls on loop forever

my god this sucks. guess being a nazi will do that to you. p.s. why does chelsea girls go on for 10 years. it's like a circle of hell. ft: these days lft: eulogy to lenny brucem chelsea girls, it was a pleasure then

Not for me

This lady sucks. She is not singing just saying the words off key. Ick.

So, hang on, Nico said even she couldn't listen to this album? Yet we are expected to? How on earth is it on this list? It's terrible.

Just a real downer

I’m pissed. I loved this album so much and then I googled her

Whatever might have been enjoyable about this was completely ruined by that terrible vocal performance. Her voice was far too abrupt and didn’t suit the potentially interesting / quirky music. Please re-record this with somebody who can sing.

Dosadno za umrijeti. 1/5, 1/10

I'm pretty not for this one Will I listen to again: 0%

2/10 - damn this is boring, a temu Joni Mitchell

Richie Unterberger wrote the About section on Nico. He described her singing as "deadpan vocals" when she briefly joined Velvet Underground. Deadpan is accurate. I know she has a lot of fans but I don't get it. This is a no for me.

So far, this isn't my vibe. Music is ok; however, Nico's vocals are sparking joy within me.

At some point in this woman's youth, someone needed to tell her, "no". Unfortunately for all of us, this pivotal moment did not take place, and this horrifying tragedy is the result. I need someone to explain to me who the audience is for this.

uhh... dafuq is dis? i wanted to like it, but i just... i just can't. the droning, forced and stiff vocals were incredibly off-putting. "Is this album over yet?" I ask myself on track 3.

This should be no more than a footnote.

Boring album, boring voice, horrible production - I can barely hear the instruments over a monotone voice. I would have given it one star higher, were it not for the fact that the artist was a literal nazi, or at the very least a racist. 2 / 10

The flute is the only good thing.

Shrieky horrific off key music for several songs - terrible. Her voice is awful. It was painful to listen to.

I really don’t like this. It’s not necessarily bad, but I can’t stand the singing and that’s about all there is on this album. The instrumentals are barebones—which is fine, but the vocals need something to help them and the music isn’t cutting it. Halfway through this, I just wanted to stop. 1.5/5

I wasn't super keen on the collab album with the Velvet Underground, but it was at least interesting due to its artiness. This was just...not that I guess. First off, can't really stand Nico's vocals. Flat and dull like most of the rest of the album. The personnel involved should've lifted the album, but the production and musical direction they went with just did NOT achieve that. I might be a tad jaded after 2+ years of listening to albums of varying degrees of quality everyday, but I couldn't finish this. Brutal.

Kinda not going to listen to a Nazi sympathiser.

Nope, no thank you.

Terrible singer

This is everything that I hate about female vocals from the 60s. Warbling with no point.

I quit after the flute from hell on track 4. F off with this.

Another new album or me. The first few tracks had me nodding appreciatively. It Was a Pleasure Then felt like a turning point into something all-together different that I couldn't really get behind. Felt like another album of someone speaking which if you squint real hard almost sounds like singing but I would hesitate to call it good. I didn't really feel a connection between the vocals and the instrumentation, kinda like beat poetry with a music bed.

Aburrido as fuck

Terrible singer

Well, so I really wanted to like this, but I just didn't. Nico's voice was just really weird sounding, and besides that, she was so flat most of the time and just sounded like someone who was sure they were a good singer, but just had zero training, zero talent, and way too much confidence. The music was alright, but it couldn't distract me from the abomination that was Nico's voice. The weirdest thing was that I'm pretty sure I've listened to another Nico album on here before and I loved it, so I'm not sure wtf happened here. I also adore Jackson Browne, and I know he wrote (and possibly played on -- I didn't look it up) at least one of these songs, and I think I've heard positive things he's said about her in the past, but it just didn't click for me. I was in agony about halfway through this album and couldn't wait for it to be over. One star.

That one theater kid from high school when you ask how their day is going:

This the epitome of pixie girl who thinks she’s got something really deep to say and somehow it’s made it to the list.

This one is totally lost on me. Nico definitely succeeds at being challenging and avant-garde. She does not, however, succeed at making something enjoyable.

Terrible

Did not care for at all in a Joni Mitchell dislike kind of way.

Ah this is not only bad, but the artist is a racist antisemitic self-loathing woman hater. Welp.

Thank goodness many other artists have covered These Days. Her version might be the worst I’ve heard.

Wow that was painful! Don’t get why this woman was allowed to record so much music. At least with Velvet Underground there was some decent tunes but this is awful.

That one was rough to get through

Hmm. Not exactly a great singer is she?? But some of the music is surprisingly pretty. Was not expecting a string quartet! Kind of get why it’s on the list due to all those involved, but if you take that away I doubt it’d be considered at all. Got as far as track 3 and gave up. 1

I can't with this awful singing.

Did people really like this? Because it's kind of awful. Bad music. Bad vocals. Bad production. Nico was a shitty person. This is a shitty album.

Boring music, horrible singing. Nico just cannot sing. Being friend with Warhol or VU doesn't make a singer from her...

Ugh I can't stand her voice.

This was very bad and I hated it

I, for some unexplicable reason, just dont consider this worth listening to. She doesnt seem like she is even trying to sing

I hated her voice on the banana album. I hated it here. Nothing noteworthy in this album. A stupid flute to push the rating down to one. Hopefully I forget this exists

Ooof man. This was a difficult one to finish. Total snoozefest.

Not my cup of tea. Depressive and cacophonic.

Dreary, dour, dire, dross. I only managed two songs

I felt like I was stuck in an aul tavern in the 1600s with some wench in the corner who didn't know when de fuck up. earned a star because 1 or 2 songs weren't utter wank. the rest was utter wank

Some pretty decent songwriting and composition is bogged down by Nico’s terrible vocals. Her voice does not fit here and these songs would be better served by a softer touch. She was the weakest part of the seminal the Velvet Underground & Nico and it’s honestly baffling how she managed to net a solo career.

Why is this on here?

She must've been one helluva muse because she was a garbage artist!

Droning, painful to listen to.

Althans, in eerste instantie. It Was a Pleasure Then" is alle verzet gebroken. De tering zeg, dit is echt net zo slecht als gisteren.

Nico is shit

Got bored, so I pulled up her Wikipedia page... The flutes are not the worst thing here 🤮

Not a fan of her voice, and didn't mesh well with the instrumentals. Just wanted it to be over by the end.

Her voice sounds very forced and mannered; the writing is uninspired. No redeeming features.

This album is so dull, lifeless, soulless. Think: Robot Cher.

Yeah... not for me. One of the hardest to push through so far

Lmao nah.

If we're honest with ourselves and our tru opinions I think that we can all agree that this is wank.

By the second song, I was already wondering if the entire album was going to be as bad as the first two songs (spoiler, yes, it is). And during "It Was A Pleasure Then," I had to make sure it wasn't my headphones creating feedback. This isn't even weird good, it's just painfully bad. It's so hard to listen to her flat, monotone voice. It would have been a much better album with just instrumentation and no vocals.

Someone described her as a muse of the 70's NYC scene... I don't know about that, I could only draw parallels of her music with Yoko Ono... It was interesting but that's about it...

Dull contrived nonsense

Nuuuuuuuullllllllle

Pov t'as une voix de vieille en début de carrière, y'a rien dans l'album

Imagine all the drab and dreary song writing of Joni Mitchell mixed with the singing ability of LATE Leonard Cohen. Of all the bad singer song writer albums on this list, this one may take the cake.

This was so bad, even the artist herself didn’t like the album. The flute didn’t help, but the real problem was her voice. Just awful. Nico was dissatisfied with the album. In 1981, she said she could not listen to it. According to Nico, her requests for drums and more guitar were refused, and she disliked the orchestrations: "I didn't like [the strings], but I could live with them. But the flute! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute."

I hope this sounds better in German…

This record kept me entitely entertained as it reminded me of two great movies. Is it me, or does Nico spound like a lot like Lili Van Shtupp? I couldn't help but picture her on stage in a campy burlesque outfit with thirsty cowboys howling at her. Hysterical. When I tried to take the album seriously I listened to it as a historical point in time piece. Pop art 60"s Warhol parties, this is what I picture they listened to. Which brought me to Men in Black 3, where Bill Hader plays Andy Warhol who is actually an undercover MIB agent making up a bunch of nonsense and passing it off as art. Can you imagine those people at a Warhol party going deep into the meanings of these songs. I nearly drove off the road, this album had me belly laughing. I knew I was in trouble going in, Nico was the part i hated about the Velvet Undergroud album. No surprises here.

Too folkey, too artsy, too "almost, but not really".

p99. 1967. 1 star. Droning German chanteuse meets 60's folk, strings and a flute. OK for two songs and outstays its welcome after that.

Here cover of these days was not good. Couldn't listen after that.

Her voice isn't very good and the music wasn't very interesting. Also just read about her life and she was described as Nazi-esque. Fuck off Nazi. 1 Star.

Wow Nico actually can’t sing huh. I quit in the middle of the nine minute avant garde song.

Really makes me feel better about my karaoke game. Really not for me this one, hard for my ears to swallow.

Not for me 1/5

I barely made it through this one, I think I might just not have the perspective or context to understand why this album is even in the list - it just wasn’t good for me. Vocals are flat, arrangements are largely boring, pacing is hard to evaluate because so many of the songs feel like they drag on. Lyrically it’s somewhat interesting but tough to follow. If I had to pick a standout track I’d say I’ll Keep it With Mine.

Favorite tracks: Winter Song, Chelsea Girls Wow oh wow, I've never had so many differing opinions in such a short amount of time. I had really high hopes for this album during the first song. The sparse instrumentals paired with Nico's deep voice really resonated with me, but it quickly grew old with every song sounding the same. I would gladly listen to a couple songs on this album, but listening to the whole thing at once made me want to rip my ears off. I really struggled to finish this one - huge disappointment for me.

I couldn’t get behind her singing. I looked at the lyrics and she has something say, but her voice killed it for me.

Not good. Her voice is pretty bad. It's been a while since I skipped every song. I did force myself to listen to what she had to say about Lenny Bruce though.

This is quite possibly the worst album I have ever listened to in my life... It's like a shit parody of a student album. Utterly, utterly awful.

I can only guess that this album is on the list to put all the other albums into perspective. There's no other explanation, because this is barely music.

Hated this

Really not my thing. Started okay and felt the inspiration for later indie women (Regina Spektor et al.) But the longer songs in the middle just lost me completely and couldn't finish.

After enduring Nicos warbling dragging down the first Velvet Underground album, I didn’t expect to be subjected to her again. Second circle, very Dante Mr 1001…

Just awful

This is really quite terrible

The worst. Terrible voice. Terrible songs. Would give 0 stars if I could.

Boring and unenjoyable.

Not for me. 1/5

Not really for me, her vocals are grating and difficult to listen to. Shame, because some (just some) of the guitar is well done. Maybe if you're tanked on Cocaine and Weed and covered in daisy chains you can dig this.

Oh my god this was a slog to get through, I didn’t want to give it a 1 but I think I have to

Meh. It's folksy and old fashioned.

Not a very compelling singer. I did not listen to much of this album.

This album sucks. No two ways about it. It's like I'm walking with a fairy in a forest. But that fairy has a cold and is probably a smurf.

DogShit!

Nico does a 45 minute medieval bard impression. Nothingburger

Yeah….. 3 tracks in and I noped out. No one should ever listen to this before they die. It’s just boring as all hell, and the singer’s voice just does not work at all. Maybe if she sang in German, I’d enjoy it more, but as it is I could not even bother with this album further than I made it.

Boring, bad singing, and according to Wikipedia she was a racist.

👎🏼

The local door dealers did well on these sessions. Seems like I'd need some to get some enjoyment from this album. It's just the same gentle floaty pop song over and over.

Wtf is this

This album sounds like a parody of an album. Very unusual voice, strong, german accent and a silly melodies just don't work together at all. One of the more grating records on this list.

Phew, what a load of artificial artistic crap. Just because Andy Warhol had a hand in it, this album had to be on the list. The album is so boring that I could have left it on in the background if it weren't for Nico's voice and vocals. 1/5

I think, no, I know I would rather have brain surgery than listen to this album again.

It was the forlorn sound of the local wino in a dual carriageway underpass

Christ this is so fucking boring. And it's just so bad.

no thanks

I really can't stand her voice! The song "Chelsea Girls" could be great but this version s*****. 1,5

I think a woke up in a bad midevil fair. But the music is worse.

Como consumir isso? Pergunta sincera!

oh my.. this was not good. She may do excellent as a singer in a band but the solos work leave much to be desired. Aside from slow, dull song, her voice is often flat and lacks range

It’s relatively hard to listen to. I do like her on the Velvet Underground record, but that’s also because of the music and atmosphere. The music and atmosphere on here is not that great

Not my bag, baby

Sounds like Bjork after she took some nyquil

Nico is that girl in high school who can’t sing but decided to write a full album’s worth and sings so low for no reason. Maybe she’s even more out of tune in the higher range? I don’t want to know! Couldn’t finish. 1.4

Very poor

Uhhhhh

Albums to Avoid While You Live…..

Not my vibe at all. Very depressing in a bad way. Emotional albums with a somber mood can be great. This one isn't if you ask me.

What absolute trash. I was in a bad mood before, but this made it 10x worse. It was NOT a pleasure

Such a different voice, don't love it as it just feels so affected, like someone trying to pronounce Shakespeare "correctly" and just wrecking it as a result. It's quite rough in some songs like The Fairest of the Season while others like These Days it sounds more natural and less of an affectation. Little Sister the backing winds and winds make her voice seem flat in comparison. Winter Song has some nice instrumental parts. Writing of It Was a Pleasure Then was too meandering for me with no structure, did feel a lot like a pretentious "art piece" that's supposed to be impactful but doesn't have substance. Melody of I'll Keep You With Me is quite nice (vocals are weakest part of that one). Okay but also I feel like I'm at a Ren Faire the entire time (could be good or bad I guess). Anyways I guess there could be a time or place for this to be a vibe but it's overall not too worthy of consideration.

Instrumentation is nice, vocals aren't and this isn't a genre I care for. One thing I can say, though, is that the vocals are muddled as hell in this mix! I can barely hear her! That sucks, regardless of what I think of her voice! There's value in doing something new as a function of doing something new, but eventually you have to take something on its merits besides novelty. Just because it's a VU spinoff doesn't make it not frustrating. I gotta draw the line somewhere.

"The Fairest of The Seasons" is admittedly a well crafted tune, though I agree with Nico, it could use some drums and guitar, but then I guess it would not be the unique the chamber pop that was celebrated. I commend all involved for the advant grade effort of "It Was a Pleasure Then", but it just ends up sounding disconnected (which I guess could be the point given the lyrics), but I am not convinced the result was what was intended. I'm generally not a fan of The Velvet Underground or John Cale, so it is not entirely unsurprising that I didn't enjoy the result. I really don't think this album belongs on this list.

Respectfully: what the fuck is this shit? I try to be open-minded about this list, give everything a fair shake, and accept that there are people out there who enjoy some things that I don't...but this was a rough listen.

Perhaps if I were in a much different headspace I may have enjoyed this.

1.0 - Awful

Instrumentals are nice but vocals are just not good and very boring.

wow, not much range. How was she so famous?

Obviously some kind of a joke here. Pretentious dribble. No direction no drive no tune. Can't hold a note. This wouldn't make most people's 1000001 albums. No stars but have to give one to register feedback

Completely unknown. I found the songs rather boring and languishing and her voice very monotone. Not a fan.

The music isn't too bad, not at all remarkable, but unfortunately there's no Lou Reed here to rescue Nico from herself, so you only get her whiny warbly God awful vocals. I will never understand why anyone ever thought it was a good idea to put such an awful singer in front of a mic.

What the hell?? She is really awful. If someone else had been singing…almost anyone else…I would have liked this album, even with the flutes. One positive thing I can take is that I was exposed to a couple of Jackson Browne songs that I was not familiar with. Unfortunately, I don’t think that I will ever to be able to unhear what she did to “These Days”. One star is being generous.

Wow this isn't good. And super boring. Couldn't finish.

The first 4 songs sounded the exact same so I bailed

wow. just really not for me.

Nah bruh

Maybe the worst album I've listened to.

I wanted to turn this off when it got to the second song. Spoiler alert, the album doesn't get any better. I think this is the worst album I've heard on this list so far. 1/5

Debe ser una broma de estás fechas ¿No?

Yeah this one wasn’t it. Boring, uninteresting and Nico sounds awful. The backing music was okay but this is not an album anyone needs to hear before they die. In fact, if I had died before listening to this album, that would’ve actually been preferable.

Trying too hard to be 'creative'

I could only make through about half of this. It’s incredibly listless and morose. There’s lots of “depressing” music that I’ve listened to and loved, but this is just…sad. I didn’t care at all for Nico with the Velvet Underground, either. This might scratch someone’s itch, but there’s just nothing here for me.

Found this to be annoying and difficult to get through. Lots of moans

Only capable of singing 3 notes? Befriend the right people and it won't matter! This album sucks. The music sucks and nico can't sing for shit.

Realise what an icon she was but sadly not for me - found it quite depressing but not in a good way

A deaf woman attempts to learn English by singing meaningless AI generated lyrics that she clearly doesn't understand. Nor do I for that matter.

Is this some kind of joke? If so, someone needs to explain it to me. Once again: The Velvet Underground (and now that I've heard this, Nico) are BAD. As in NOT GOOD. You are being pranked. Hit a note. Tune your guitar. Take a poetry class. WHO SAID YOU COULD DO THIS! Insultingly bad.

I don't understand the appeal of Nico's consistently flat delivery. I also thought that this album was poorly mixed. I would get drawn in by the guitar only to struggle to hear it buried underneath the loud string section and woodwinds. I don't think a better balance would have helped much. I didn't need to hear this and wouldn't want to hear it again.

This would be significantly better if Nico could actually sing in key.

Atmospheric... I guess. Not much more I could say positively. High 1.

all these nice songs and they really chose Nico to sing them

Great with Lou Reed, not great solo.

Mangler Lou reed

Toinen raita on lupaava. 1+

Take the i and c from the name and what is left is my review....

So the first thing I saw about this album was the artist doing an interview and saying did she can't listen to this album and that it's terrible. That it was destroyed in production with too many flutes. So here I am wondering before I even listen why an album would be on this list? If not even the artist likes it. And then I turned it on, and I realized there was still a lack of self-awareness on the artist's part, because she flat out can't sing. She can't hold a note. It is absolutely terrible and I have no understanding of what significance this could possibly have that it would be on the list.

She released an album which is more than most can ever say. She shouldn't have, but she did.

1001 albums to help you die. Crap.

.... So far the 60s records I've heard have had fantastic production. This sounds like it was recorded with tin cans and string, either that or my speakers have blown. Artsy doesn't mean good, who put this on the list? Nico is so monotone, no deviation. Some of the instrumentals would have been lovely if they weren't so muddy sounding. I hated it.

Luckily this album ended just as I was about to kick the stool away....

Dogshit drawl over boring minimal piano instrumentation. She sounds like an elderly german teacher in elementary school trying to force the children to sing in a choir but they aren't having it.

Jesus fucking christ this has to be the worst album I've ever had the displeasure of violating my ears with

This has to be a joke, right ?!?

Very meh

This is extremely difficult to listen to. I think this is the first real album I've heard where I have thought \"given a day or two I could probably make something better myself\". I don't think there are any redeeming songs, and some of these songs go on for a very long time. The singing isn't good or enjoyable to listen to. The songs are not catchy or enjoyable to listen to (i.e. if a good singer were to sing them I don't think that would save them). The instruments sound bad and the arrangements are bad.

Nico is a German folk singer and supermodel. Not sure why she was a supermodel... She looks like a scarecrow. She should have kept to modelling though, cause she can't sing her way out of a plastic bag. This album is fucking horrible. Apparently she sang on that Velvet Underground album with the big fucking banana on it. This is like fucking Dollar Store Joni Mitchell. It's like if a Renaissance Fair caught fire, and got launched into a garbage dump. Utter trash. Favourite songs: These Days Least favourite songs: Little Sister, Winter Song, It Was a Pleasure Then (whoever mixed this garbage deserves to be shot out of a cannon into a river of shit. This is great music to torture someone to). 1/5.....negative stars if I could

Sorry, I just can't bear to listen to this. Interminable.

like eating leaf litter, and not in a good way

Horrible

Rubbish

Terrible., unable to listen to it

Oh god that was bad. Musically it was ok, but uninspired and meh. But her voice drags this down faster than a mob informant with concrete boots.

1.4/5 listened 1x

Songs and instrumental are cool but I couldn’t get past her voice. It was hard to listen to.

Warbly nonsense

Nah. That’s not it.

Ibland måste man bara sluta lyssna för att skydda sig själv. Så blev det här. Rösten är inte bra och tyvärr inte musiken heller.

I knew from the cover and year, but went in with an open mind. I was right.

My first introduction to Nico was with Velvet Underground and Nico, which is a legendary avante garde album. Her solo work is, well, um, like listening to my wife talk about our summer home improvement projects. I stopped listening after the fourth. Key song: These Days, because it was used on one of my favorite mixtapes/cd given to me years ago (Thanks again, BTW).

No 😐 I tried but.. No.

I'm going to feel a little bad if she's deaf, but not too bad, because this is awful. She shouldn't even sing in the shower. If this was some experiment where someone taught her English through song, I guess that's kind of neat, but I hope she learned to speak English and never did this again. The music is OK from what I heard, but I couldn't finish this. Zero stars should be an option.

Who told this woman she could sing? This was awful!

Absolute slog to get through. Like listening to a whale sing over strings and flutes. I should like this because I like what she did with the Velvet Underground and I like many of the songwriters she worked with, but I don’t. This album would be 10 times better with any other person singing these songs.

that was painful. 1 star

Just by looking at the album cover I could tell the sort of “music” it would be but after half a dozen tracks I could stand it no more ! Someone should tell Nico that she can’t sing !

A great big nope from me. I agree with others - Nico cannot sing, or at least she isn’t singing to the same tune as everyone else. I don’t understand anyone who likes this. Her style is the embodiment of a weak, vulnerable female who can barely open their eyes let alone say no. Awful.

So long. So boring.

Can I get an ice pik?

I wouldn't say this is my style of music. First song isn't impressing me.

Hm, das mag 1967 ja hipp gewesen sein... aber alleine das Englisch ist heftig. Ich mag es nicht

i wish i could've enjoyed this album. alas, it is not for me. lots of famous names appear on this album! nico's singing did not come across as passionate at all. in fact, it comes across as flat and uninteresting. sure, i enjoy male artists who aren't good singers, but they have passion and their lyrics are intriguing (see: leonard cohen). the only aspect of this album i did enjoy were the string and flute arrangements, which were added by the producer and against nico's wishes. so i'm not considering that in her favor.

No. Fran sez no too.

So much droning. Ugh.

What the crap did I just listen to? Awful.

Interesting voice. The first song caught my ear, because her singing style is so different, but then all the songs after that sounded too similar. Meh.

Nope not for me. Sounds like a sad depressed hippie signing the same song over and over again. Might be more performance reciting than music to me

Turns out the solo vocalist who got outsung by Lou Reed on an album just isn't very good

Let's ignore her German accent, that made it a hard task for me to listen to this album. The production is bad, the dominance of her voice over the music is distracting, and the music is in shambles at times.

Jackson Brown wrote “These Days”and recorded a much better version 5 years after this album. Gonna so no to Nico.

Strongly dislike her voice. And most of the songs were terrible.

Terrible

This has to be like the 6th to 7th Renaissance-core album that is on this list. This album really sucked

The folk parts are ok but when it gets weird it fucking ruins it. God awful at times. Never really good enough to make up for it.

Theres probably at least 1001 albums better than this

Shit singing. Boring songs.

My first reaction to this is that this is terrible. Unmitigated bullshit. Reading up a bit, I see there is a strong Andy Warhol connection, and this very much starts to make sense. Doesn't make it any less bullshit - she can't sing. The downright monotone of her delivery is painful. Turns out she was nobbing half of the music industry at some point or another, and I'm not saying that she fucked her way into a record deal, but it seems very likely that she fucked her way into a record deal. The names that surround her - Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, John Cale, Jim Morrison - all hyper-influential, and "for some reason" contributed to her career. There's some rather dubious claims, here and there, of her antisemitism - but that doesn't quite stack up with her relationships with Lou Reed (whose father changed the family name from Rabinowitz) and Dylan (whose father was a Zimmerman) so I can't really leverage that into a rating, but the story about her stabbing someone in the eye with a broken glass for the heinous crime of "being mixed race" seems pretty well documented and corroborated, so that definitely will be factored in. I only wish I could go lower than 1 star, because that's where the "artistic merit" of this bilge was going to end up anyway.

Probably the worst album I’ve ever heard. Is this a joke? Since I started the 1001 this is the first one I had to take off because I couldn’t take it any more

This album should be on the list '1001 albums that make you wanna die'

That's a no for me dawg.

I don’t see it.

First utterance albumen har det samma sångare.. Mutta päinvastoin tuo albumi on teoksena mahtava ja järähtelevä.. Nicos cringy voice just blows my ears away, the beautiful harmonies..

I didn't really care for this album. Looking at the history with Warhol it looks like an experiment in what would become reality television. The Real World Chelsea Hotel, and just as fake.

Her voice is certainly...um...niche. Not for everyone and certainly not for me. I did find this interesting quote from Nico about this album: "I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. And I asked for simplicity, and they covered it in flutes! ... They added strings and – I didn't like them, but I could live with them. But the flute! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute."

I’m sure this album is big in artist and 60’s avante garde circles which probably consists of 3 people working in a record store in NYC.

Nico was good on some Velvet Underground songs, not so much on her own.

Really undecided if I love or hate her voice on the first track. Upon the second track, I think it's really just when she's singing at the low end of her register that I don't enjoy. Makes it seem like she's doing a voice. Instrumentation is interesting and light; certainly unique to the album. The strings provide a lot of great melody and rhythm throughout the different songs. Do we really need an 8 minute whatever "It Was a Pleasure Then"? Feels gratuitous. The more this goes the less I understand why this is on the list. Not even necessarily because it's bad but it's just not notable and feels like someone taking the piss. There's an underlying element that feels like this would have been transition music in movies from the 50's and 60's epic movies or potentially Disney classics with worse singing. FWIW - This has elicited more reaction from me than the past couple of albums so it has that going for it.

Not sure why it's on the list

I like her with Velvet Underground but her solo stuff doesn't do a lot for me

Wow. This epitomizes music I just can't relate to on any level. It sounded like 16 sub-par variations on the string arrangement for "Eleanor Rigby" (despite there being only 10 tracks) without the joy, songcraft, or musicality. And "joy" may not be a word used to describe "Eleanor Rigby," but it works by way of comparison to the emotional range of Chelsea Girl.

The first song started out really good, and I was optimistic about this one! Then the way over pitched synth came on a song. Then a pan flute on the next. I gave up once I heard the equivalent of a rock being drug over a violin. Wildly disappointing. DNF.

This album is the poster child for pretty privilege art. There's no way in hell that the Velvet Underground boys and Verve Records would have put this much effort into someone who sings like a cartoon parody of a 13-year-old boy if Nico wasn't an attractive woman. And I hate that. She's a garbage singer. There's just no way around it. Everything is over-enunciated and sung with a complete lack of nuance. It was like listening to the Velvet Underground backing a small-town high school Christmas play. Which is to say that the music is actually quite good. That would normally be worth a star, but I'm so pissed that the VU boys made this thing that they also get docked a star. I wish this didn't exist as it dramatically reduces my esteem for the Velvet Underground.

This might be the worst album so far on this list and I seriously question why it is on this list to begin with. I couldn't even get through the whole album, I got halfway through "It Was a Pleasure Then" and had to call it quits. Do yourself a favour and don't listen to this. Would give 0 stars if I could.

Super amusing

AJ: this is fucking terrible. Got excited to hear These Days. She manages to ruin one of the most beautiful songs of all time in 20 seconds. What a fucking idiot.

I couldn’t do more than a couple songs, voice was annoying

Just because she was the velvet underground’s knocking stick doesn’t mean she can sing

The music started, and I thought, "This is really pretty." Then she started singing. She sings half an octave below her range, on purpose I assume, and she has no control of her voice. It sounds as if an emo teenager who didn't give two shits about singing was forced in front of a microphone. I hope the band is doing well.

So so so uninteresting

Horrible. Do not understand why this one is on the list

I thought her voice was interesting but odd and wondered how she got into singing ... found out on Wikipedia that she was a Nazi and racist, so didn't continue listening after that.

I like to think I have eclectic taste in music, but that doesn't include this album. Nico reminds me of Lili Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles.

I cannot figure out the hype surrounding Nico. She cannot sing. The instrumentation on here was even bland. The best track on here was "These Days" which isn't even her song, the Jackson Browne version is much better.

no way

She cannot sing. She fucked a lot of artists so her numbers prob did well but gdamn I think a deaf person would shut this album off

Longest 46 minutes of my life. I would have to be at gunpoint to listen to this album again.

It baffles me that Nico had any sort of singing career but if you like lifeless droning, then this is the album for you.

Couldn't get through it, it sounds like it's for kids, or 40 year old women, I don't know

Honestly no idea how this album was ever recommended. Absolute snore fest. So slow, too stripped down and the singer's voice is garbage. Her vibrato sounds like she's holding back tears and her pitch is just slightly off which makes my skin crawl. Made it to the title track and had to shut it down.

There was 0 talent in the development of this album. Boring and pretentious and furthers my hypothesis that sometimes the originator of the 1001 list of albums threw a dart on a board to get him to the 1001 count. 2/10.

This could have been a good folk at album at certain points, but the low, flat singing was just not it at all. Some parts were just incredibly annoying to sit through

Forgetable.

Wow, elle a vraiment réussi à mettre 10 fois la même chanson dans un album. Pis une chanson plate en plus de ça

Uh I’m so sorry but this was diabolical :(

Yeh,nah.dreary not my cuppa.

This does nothing for me. Even as a fan of some Velvet Underground - I either don't have the context required for this or I'm right.

Seichtes denglisches Singer-Song-Writer Gedudel bis Geschrammel mit Flöte, Streicher, selten Gitarre.

I got to the flute then gave up

Wow. Why would anyone enjoy this album? It's a solo album by a singer who seems to be able to sing in only one single, constant tone and with extremely sparse, yet badly executed instrumentation. The strings and flut make for some of the most bland, tepid and shallow classical instrumentation I have ever heard. The rest of the instrumentation is worse, when it's present at all. The obvious German accent makes Nico's singing even more grating - as if it weren't droning, dragging and moany enough by itself. I understand that Nico herself did not think this is a good album. I absolutely agree with her. To be fair, there are worse-sounding albums on this list. Often that comes down to personal taste though. For this one, I can't hear any redeeming qualities whatsoever.

How tf does Nico have 2.4M monthly listeners on Spotify right now? Bizarre. This music reminds me of a Wes Anderson movie. It's got to be on one of his soundtracks. I want to love it because of the Velvet Underground and Nico. But her voice is so flat and boring. The music follows suit. 60s folk-rock... meh

"I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. Nach dem 5. Song ausgemacht. It was not a pleasure at all. Wott a tärräbl äkksent auch.
