Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Strong album. Worth a 3.5, but not a 4. Highlighted by a couple strong singles, but there is not a low point in the album filled with competent country songs.
Some good ol country but didn't love all of them.
4/10
la country 80’s est BORING… leur voix sont incroyables par contre 2+/5
I prefer my country more clippy-cloppy. Beautiful singing, I guess, but a bit boring.
a bit boring 4 me
Slow, down, boring. Well, country music I guess? Singing is ok 4/10
2 out of 5. Certainly a trio of lovely singing voices doing what they do best and in a reasonable amount of time.
Thought that this being a collaboration of three artists would make this country record way more interesting than any other, but apart from the harmonization and a track that feels more pop than country ("Telling Me Lies"), most of it came to me as just traditional country. I'll add that these ladies do sing well and the record sounds quite smooth, but other than that, I do not have anything truly positive to say about it, as always, country is a genre with a very boring sound to me.
- Well... I seem to be the minority, but I don't like the voices together - the soprano is screechy/out of tune on the highest notes (which drives me nuts), and I don't feel like it melds will with the other, smoother/silkier voices (especially on The Pain of Loving You & Those Memories of You). - I don't actively dislike the album - it has its moments where it's pretty, like Wildflowers and Telling Me Lies, but I expected more of those moments - it all felt very samey throughout. - I also just dislike walking basslines and screechy violin. Classical twangy country really doesn't hit for me. - The fact that there are so many covers is disappointing because the songs don't feel authentic or vulnerable, so I feel almost nothing listening to these songs. There's a place for covers, sure, but on a list of 1001 albums you need to hear? Also, I'm so over hearing women sing about centring men, and it's even more annoying in super patriarchal country music. - And that Hobo's Meditation song? That's pretty tone deaf for a bunch of rich people to be singing...
I'm not a fan of country music at all, I don't think this is bad per-se but not my cup of tea.
Three phenomenal voices, nothing interesting done with them harmonically. Country music is so awful man.
Nice, but not brilliant. Many of the themes might have been progressive at the time but haven't aged well
They got Linda and Emmylou in my Dolly! Just really not that much of a fan of three-part harmonizing, I guess. Give me undiluted Dolly, stupid book.
The Pain of Loving You - 3/5 Making Plans - 3/5 To Know Him Is to Love Him - 2/5 Hobo's Meditation - 3/5 Wildflowers - 3/5 Telling Me Lies - 2/5 My Dear Companion - 2/5 Those Memories of You - 3/5 I've Had Enough - 2/5 Rosewood Casket - 2/5 Farther Along - 3/5 Average score: 2.6/5 ⭐️⭐️ meh, not crazy about this album. i don't care for country all that much in general (with the exception of a few artists), and while i like the three vocalist's performance just fine, some of these songs were just plain boring unfortunately
Beautiful voices but not a lot to excite me here
Getting me to like a country album is an uphill battle, and it's one this album never wins The vocal performances are the best thing about this album, but they're let down by pretty underwhelming backing tracks for the most part My favourite song was probably "Telling Me Lies", in no small part because the backing instrumentation is comparably much more varied I've a strong feeling that this album is better than I think it is, but it's pretty underwhelming to me
Yeah this is probably nice if you like this kind of stuff. It's well-done and they're good singers and all but this type of corny ass music makes me roll my eyes into the back of my head. "To know him is to love him" oh my god shut up sorry
I almost made it through a year of choking down my fears But they're gone for now, all thanks to Linda Ronstadt
nice voices, uninspired lyrics, very predictable arrangements I kinda feel like I'm losing braincells while listening
They have nice voices but honestly can't get into the genre - the subject and the music itself aren't my thing. It was a nice, quick listen though
Perfectly performed old-school Nashville music that is way too predictable and one-tempo to engage with:
Album #132 Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris: Trio So I guess this is like The Highwaymen but for women? What is it about country that attracts the genre to super-groups, whereas in other mediums of music, the concept is so novel? Is it perhaps because country is the sonic manifestation of American patriotism, and there is nothing America loves more than to market and sell, and nothing sells more than a big collaboration of names that you recognize? The NBA All-Star Game, Avengers: Endgame, Woodstock, etc., there is nothing that America loves more than to be able to say “oh, hey, I know that guy!”. Personally, though I am selective about what country music I consume, I do enjoy it in theory. It is essentially just folk music with a twang, and folk music is perhaps the greatest medium for storytelling. But sometimes with country, the storytelling is lost, and the twang is all that remains. There is a world of difference between Townes Van Zandt's self-titled and Trio. I am not too familiar with any of the women here, other than Dolly Parton, whom I’m only familiar with because Reddit loves to bring her up at any given moment. I can’t say that I was really able to distinguish any distinct voices, seeing how almost every song sounded exactly the same. Also, Emmylou has to be the most Appalachian Hills Have Eyes name that I’ve ever heard. Overall, this album dragged and was quite boring. Pretty much anyone who says that they will listen to anything but country has this exact sound in mind when they say that. The kind of music that plays on repeat at the truck stop you pass through in the middle of nowhere. Best Songs: Wildflowers, Those Memories of You, To Know Him Is to Love Him Worst Song: Hobo’s Meditation Score out of 10: 5
Song after song turns the listener more and more sleepy. Not for me 2/5
Lindas voces pero me sentí en una iglesia de eeuu
Just kinda washed over me this one. 2.5 stars
Love dolly, but not my thing
I'm not a Country fan, so not much in it for me here. Beautiful harmonies, but it all sounded a bit uninspired, but that's most Country music for me.
No disrespect to these three legendes but this really didn't do too much for me. A few good songs here and there for sure but overall it felt quite bland you could tell none of them were trying to hit it out of the park. There is a reason why 80's country is usually not talked about that much. 4/10
1.9 It was simultaneously pleasant but detestful. I think if I was into it I could find the beauty in it, but I am absolutely not and I absolutely did not. Not one track saved down.
Over my heaaaad
My Pops would’ve loved this. Me, not so much.
All three great singers but this album just bored me :(
Three beautiful voices but the old style country song choices were disappointing. It didn't hold my attention despite the talent involved.
1. pain - 2 2. planz - 2 3. him - 2 4. hobo - 2 5. uuild - 1 6. liez - 1 7. dear - 1 8. memoriez - 2 9. enough - 2 10. cazket - 2 11. along - 1
Boring
Didn't quite like it
Пиндоссовские бабушки
Ist zu viel Country für mich.
Did nobody find it weird at any point that these three individual artists were singing about ostensibly the same man in each of these songs
Boah leider nur 2. Dolly is bomb aber country is schwierig
Listened to half, was ok, not my cup of tea
I like all of these singers, but did not like the songs on this album. 2/5
creo que aquí yo soy el problema, se que objetivamente es un gran álbum, pero no soy fan del genero.
Awful. All songs sound the same too. Stand-outs - Those Memories of You
Great voices. Shame about the music. Dreary. Unthought I’d been listening for about an hour, but was only 20 minutes in. Persevered, but only just. Didn’t shift my opinion on country music.
Pretty slow and not a fan of the country twang.
This was a bit of a Ronseal album, it did exactly what it said on the tin. It’s not really my thing but I can understand the appeal. There are a few songs on here that are quite enjoyable individually if they were wrapped in the context of something else - some of the songs wouldn’t be out of place on something like a O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, but a whole album of these songs is too much for me.
Twang
Collab
Could you hear the deep sigh I made when this popped up. Country and Western x 3. Triple trouble. But like a diligent student of this never ending list, I did listen to it all. Never warmed to Dolly’s warbling, but one of the voices was very nice. I think it might have been Linda. Whoever sung lead on ‘Telling Me Lies’ anyway. That was ok.
I really love Linda Ronstadt‘s voice. So it irks me, a lot, that this is the only place she shows up on the 1001 list. She had an amazing solo rock career! This country folk sound is very meh in comparison. The entire album focuses on one particular show folk sound, heavy on the Dolly warble. All three of these musicians are highly talented but this album is a snooze.
Three standouts with voices that do not appeal to me in a genre I overall do not enjoy. I recognize each voice is a talent, so I will not give this a 1, which reflects my musical limitations in appreciating what must be a great collection of songs for many. This was painful to listen to.
I feel bad giving Dolly a 2, but this just really isn't my kind of music
The album was a never ending song that I wanted to end. Not even Dolly could save this for me.
Maso
okay, enjoyed this more than i thought i would. still not my style, at all. folky, country, beautiful harmonies. Dolly and crew have really great voices. i dont love the sound of the songs, or the content. Telling Me Lies if I had to pick one out. 2.5/5!
I was surprised when I came across this album. A collaboration album between three pop stars is something that would never happen in the modern age given how individualistic much of the music industry has become. More money in doing that, innit? I've never listened to Dolly Parton before, but I know she was an early sex symbol within the music biz. I've never, ever heard of Ronstadt before, but I have rolled an Emmylou Harris prior to landing on this album. "Red Dirt Girl" was an interesting listen. Late-career picks have always been interesting to me because of their relative scarcity. I've got the album on as I'm writing these words, and it's more or less exactly how I remember it. Harris is a good vocalist, and I can appreciate the dense, warm atmosphere which hangs over many of the tracks. The heavy percussion works quite well in balancing out the mellower parts, too. I can't imagine how she'd sound on this much-earlier album, however. A country-influenced pop album with a production value more befitting of the time, I'd imagine. Anyways, on with the music. On da friggen money, yo. The year of release was kind of shock, however - I had not checked it prior to hitting play. This is fine. Just a perfectly pleasant jig, and one that doesn't dare to overstay it's welcome. The vocals are the highlight, predictably. Much of this album features Parton on the vocals, if I'm not mistaken. She's an adept vocalist, but I think the harmonies between the three collaborators are the best parts of the album. The different intonations and styles of singing mesh together into something which is pleasing and earnest. The instrumentation is solid, too. Very easy to listen to, if minimal. While this music is too prim and proper for my liking (I value clear and unique creative identities above all else), I can't deny that it's good and made for a nice listening experience. Book time. A rare success as a collaborative country album. A return to form for Ronstadt and Parton. Vocal harmonies are the highlight. Well-received by critics, won a Grammy and was a chart success. I'm not sure how notable Ronstadt and Harris are, but this album seems like a nifty way of immortalising them in music history, and it seems to have a meritocratic backing, too. I suppose I could let this one through. I cosign this inclusion.
Not my style
Three great talents and some lovely harmonies. However this is depressingly slow with no stand out track. Thirty eight minutes is not long but it sure felt like it. Even for 1987 this was outdated. These ladies have far better material elsewhere.
Hvorfor eksisterer dette albumet. Det kunne ha vært så gøy! Istedenfor er det seige saker ass
Easy county listen with good harmonies, but no song is really a stand out.
Couple of songs, specifically Wildflowers, Rosewood Casket, and Pain of Loving You were decent. The problem with the rest of the album is the 80's overproduction.
The voices are lovely, but the material is just too hokey.
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Hobo's Meditation Man, shoot me in the head. Make it a triple-tap. Fortunately its only 39 minutes. I just can't even with this. Half the songs are about fretting over or trying to please their "man". Insufferable. I think Hobo's Meditation is maybe the only redeeming song.
I love Dolly Parton as a person, but I don't care for her as an artist. This album is filled with only slow country ballads. I don't think I can imagine a combination that fits my tastes less. It's well made, just boring
Highlights: Hobo's Meditation, My Dear Companion, Farther Along. In a nutshell: power trio Dolly and Linda go back to their roots. Genre veteran Emmylou bolsters the sound. With their talent combined, they record an...okay country album? Some vocal mixes could have been tidier as I could hear Dolly more than Emmylou and Linda. Telling Me Lies was unpleasant. I'm not sure if this is essential listening though. Overall: 4/10
It's ok? Sounds are nice, but nothing all too special imo. Wouldn't truly mind listening to this but really has to fit the mood I am in I guess. A high 2 or a low 3 but since there's no song I really actually care about that much I guess a 2 is fitting
Fairly enjoyable if not pretty forgettable. Weird AI album art on AM unsettled me
i wasn't happy to listen to it
It is crazy to think that one morning people would wake up and see that such three big female names in country music decided to create a collaborative album. Must have been crazy for fans of this kind of music. I have just realized that one thing that I enjoy from modern country music is the heavier production. To me, some of the songs in this project sounded empty. Some tracks were a direct addition to my country playlist. Nice to have listened to this album at least once.
Pleasant
This is #day492 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… what's the percentage of country on this list, I wonder? This record, however, isn't the worst kind of country I've heard. It kind of has a Christmas feel to it. Or, these are just the December days that make me think that way. Let it be a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day493.
Not my thing
Deep respect and nothing but admiration for all three of these talented ladies. Trio left me disappointed. It’s like they got together and wrote the most depressing album they could dream up.
I gave it a try. It's just not for me. 3 absolute legends, so how can I really critique? I want to just drop a 3 here and walk away. But country music doesn't deserve that kind of charity, it certainly wouldn't be as kind to me in return. So this gets a 2. I'm sorry ladies. You could have taken this in a different direction and probably scored an easy 5. I hope we can still be friends.
Like a trio of voices carried across an open field at dusk, this country-folk album feels like three lantern lights moving in the same direction—distinct in color yet softly merging into one steady glow. Don't like a torch in my face though.
Ok
Easy listening. 2/5
Very mid
Sorry Dolly but not the biggest fan
Pretty unremarkable. 2/5
Three giants of country come together to sing bittersweet songs for you to cry into your beer to. As is often the problem with some of these country albums, the production is too clean. I want some dirt with my misery. Also, Parton is easily the best - her tracks are just so much better. Best Tracks: Making Plans; Wildflowers; Those Memories of You
Surely today was not the day for this classic country album. I needed something that activates my body do not slow down.
Nice Dolly Parton collaboration. Some of the songs were pretty good but if felt mostly like filler material or stuff for hardcore fans. Most of it kind of faded away into background music. Probably not something I would listen to again.
This is getting out of hand, now there are three of them!
Good if you like that sort of thing. Moments of enjoyment
Not really my style of music but beautiful voices and singing.
These ladies need to cheer up a bit. They are beautiful, have great voices but the songs are too depressing.
Probably just not my kind of music but I couldn't really get into this. Dolly as a person is great and I've liked other songs of hers but this album is so-so.
As much as I respect Dolly, this just ain't my album. But it did get me thinking about the souls of all those hobos. Are they riding the box cars of heaven?
5/10
Dolly the person is so much more worthy than Dolly the musician.
I've listened to it 2 full times. Not doing much for me.
They have nice voices obviously but this must be the sappiest country music I’ve ever heard
Oh boy was that boring. I don't dislike country per se, but this is what doesn't work for me in this style.
Beautiful voices and vocal harmonies, but that's really the only appeal of this album.
Really not my jam
When I first saw this, I was really optimistic but for me it just didn’t deliver. There were no real highs
Appreciate the artistry. Not for me though.
It was like spending a rainy Sunday afternoon at your grannies. I am nearly 70 and this sounded dated to me! Absolute dirge my most hated sort of music.
Good, just not for me.
Nothing too memorable but easy going.
Country at its purest.
nie
I can say without a doubt that this is the best country album I listened to in its entirety. 2 ⭐️…. It is almost bearable
Some of the songs were okay but most were too this or too that. I don't need x-tian piety. But they are better than Suicide...fact! 2 stars.
Nice voices, but cliched, repetitive and whiney.
Bit boring as I am not a bij country/western fan
One song is ok, but hard to listen the entire album.
They obviously all have great voices and they combine them very well but it all falls a bit flat for me. Overall i was just a bit bored
This just wasn’t for me, sadly. As much as I can appreciate the talents of these women, especially Linda Ronstadt, whose vocals on “Telling Me Lies” are incredible, and Queen Dolly, it was just *too* twangly country for me to enjoy a full album of it.
This cover is crazy but the songs don't really match it. It's not really my style but there were some nice ones and the singers really sound good together.
I've got a lot of time for Dolly, but this is my 3rd country album in about a week, and I'm so over it.
Such pretty voices, but those women are capable of so much more than sad crooning.
Désoler, désoler, non, je peux pas JE PEUX PAS JE PEUX PAS JE PEUX PAS JE PEUX PAS C'EST INSUPPORTABLE J'EN AI LA CHAIR DE POULE JE SUIS TROP FAIBLE ARRÊTEZ ARRÊTEZ ARRÊTEZ AAAAAAAH
Not my favourite but with some surprise bangers!
Album 11/1001 A bit too classical country for my tastes but enjoyed listening to some female vocals again at last - each of the three women has a beautiful, distinctive voice, yet they blend together perfectly. Favourite song: Telling Me Lies 😾 Honourable mention: To Know Him Is to Love Him 😻 ...Those Memories of You 😿 2½ / 5
I don't know if I'm technically allowed to rate this album considering one of the artists gives my daughter free books. Could be seen as a conflict of interest.
Nja, möjligtvis att jag skulle kunna tänka mig att ligga med någon av dem. I alla fall då.
Meh
I don't listen to much country. Like much of late 80s stuff, sounds "digitally recorded" in a not so awesome way imo. Too many slow jams in a row, very samey sounding... Less than the sum of its parts...The Audioslave of female country artists? DX7 synth on only one song, in 1987, not bad. Top Track: Those Memories of You
I wanted to like it more.
Not my favourite genre, or even my favourite version of the genre. It’s well-enough done but it’s not for me.
I was expecting more from this trio. I guess it's in line with country music at the time, but I didn't know this existed until it was assigned to me today and I am underwhelmed

Not really my kind of music
Love Dolly, Love emmylou, but them two with rhonda and it was not my cup of tea
My Mom loved this album but it still doesn’t do it for me despite loving early Dolly Parton. 80s era country is not my favorite.
Clearly three very talented woman, but I felt their powerful voices kept clashing. Unfortunately this just wasn't my cursed artifact
2.5
2.5
2. its not bad, but its not the music for me. country
Very boring unfortunately. Not a big fan of their voices in harmony together which is most of this album.
Country isn’t really my thing but some impeccable harmonies
The albums strength's are Dolly Parton's wavering folkish voice but this album suffers from not reaching the potential it should. Good songs: Wildflowers, To Know Him Is To Love Him
Probably can't be too objective about this review as it's so entirely outside of my usual wheelhouse (which is the point of this whole experiment, I guess), but I won't be listening again.
halfway through the high energy dance pop/r&b of the ArchAndroid i finished my review, clicked "submit" and found THIS waiting on the other side. you know i hate country music. 2/5
Nice voices. Mostly the same and surprisingly boring
It’s a sweet story of three women held as giants of their genre, joined by shared admiration for each other, who finally get to record an album together. Unfortunately the story is more intriguing than the music. Don’t get me wrong, the vocal performances are all fantastic and I understand this is a covers-heavy album, but this is some of the most boring twangy garbage I've ever heard. I want so badly to give the album a one, but out of respect for Parton, Ronstadt, and Harris, I'll give it a two. "Telling me Lies" wasn't bad either
Not sure why this needed to be on the list, each individual artist probably already have albums on it and when joined together for this album it doesn't have any real change on the outcome. I liked Wildflowers which is just a straight up Dolly Parton song. 'Telling Me Lies' could potentially be better if it didn't have the mid-80s production. I'm like ~40 albums into this list and one trend I've observed is there seems to be an emphasis on albums that have focus on vocals and specifically vocal harmonies. Personally that's not what I'm looking for all the time so maybe that's why I bristle when they seem to be overrepresented as albums I need to hear before I die.
Ok 2/5
These songs seem well done but I just can’t connect to this genre. Lots of themes of heartbreak with country sounds. Not unpleasant but nothing I see myself coming back to any time soon.
country music sucks sorry
4/10
Definitely not in my listening wheelhouse, but there's something really solid about this album. I'm not sure if it should be on the 1001 list, but that's just me.
Was ok but totally forgettable
These are unquestionably three super talented women. And there is no doubt they make beautiful music together. It’s just not a style of music (country/western) that does anything for me. But if it’s up your alley then my guess is you’ll love this record.
Yes, their voices work well together with Dolly to the fore. However, overall this is bland and boring with some poor covers. Don’t get the hype
I wanted to like it!
Not for me.
Right on
they all have gorgeous voices but i'm just not very into the genre
Good album but pretty slow. Was expecting something a little more fun or upbeat. 2.5 goin down. Dolly should be on American currency.
great singing and production, but i just don’t really like country music and it was hard for me to sit through all 40 mins
They all have great voices and the musicians are excellent, but that doesn't change the fact that it's straightforward country. Not my thing.
2,4 She might sing nice.
umm, i dont really know what to say, just that it was a bit mid. it wasnt bad but i wouldnt listen to it in any other occasion. it didnt woke anything in me and neither heard any song and be like "omg this is such a banger!". i liked the first track, The Pain of Loving You, but not even that song can't make me wake up one day and fancy listen to this album, or dolly parton while we're at it. this genre, the banjo-texas-country or whatever it is, is SO boring and overrated. im convinced only americans like it, istg. that being said, PLEASE, can this website STOP giving me 1960s-american-lame-ass-country albums (im looking at you, bob dylan)???? im begging, two days in a row is too much for my pop-rock-lover body.... praying for tomorrow
Not a bad country album, just not really interesting to me. 2.5/5
Quite the super group! Unfortunately this probably needs more listens to appreciate the songwriting but a lot of these blended into the others. No real standouts for me.
They're talented but country is my least favourite genre going. Pass.
An old, slow country and western album that doesn't give you anything that you can't get from another album in this genre.
Super smooth 80s pop-country. It's not a complete blind spot for me - the Loretta Lynn album featured on this list is fabulous and I probably would buy if it was on CD - but this is just a bit to MOR, fabulously sung though it is. 2.5 really but should we as many have commented round up for Linda Rondstadt's remarkable wig on the cover? Er no.
Slappe greier
Yeehaaw, another one of 'em Country albums ... *cue tumbleweed*. 2/5
Good example of style, not my thing
Rating: 2 Notable Songs: N/A Wasn't bad but every single song sounded the exact same with a different title.
I feel like I probably heard this as a kid since my mom listened to this stuff, but it's hard to tell these songs apart from just Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt solo. I tried to give this a chance in her honour, but this is all a little too croony and whiny for me for the most part. I don't feel a burning urge to feel lonesome. Little Darling is a solid solid though.
Nice enough, some legends. High 2s.
Legends in their own right but not my kind of jams. They are not my style as a group or solo artists. Saying that they are amazing women and deserve all the accolades they get. Like I said very talented and trendsetters. I think Dolly is one of the most kind, caring and funny ladies out there.
# Album Name: Trio # Artist: Dolly Parton # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Nice vocals. OK country music but very forgettable and quite boring if im honest. Did not enjoy. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
I wanted to like this, but I found it pretty bland. Turns out I just like Dolly, I thought the best moments of the album were her songs (Wildflowers, those memories of you)
2.4 F- Dolly, M- Emmylou, K- Linda
It was ok, but not a vibe for me. 2.5
These three are absolute heavyweights of country but unfortunately there's only so much enthusiasm I can muster for their collective efforts. When it's guitarry it's ok, when it goes slow and sappy, it's just unbearable.
Great voices, no doubt. Especially Dolly's, which is instantly recognizable. I appreciate the talent and harmonies, but this style of country music is not my thing.
Harmonies good. Good that it was short
Mellow and beautiful but nothing that really stood out and captured my attention here .
听不明白,感觉是我妈会听的歌
No Jolene eh? Meh.
I know… three strong females with great voices and careers. I just don’t like this kind of country
I'm a huge fan of Dolly Parton! Who isn’t?! Her voice is fantastic and her spirit shines through. I don't, however, feel like this album transcends time very well. It feels incredibly dated and old-school, from the overall sound to...well, all of it.
mostly slow songs, some country swing.
I liked Dolly Parton's voice, of course. Didn't always care for the harmonies or the parts that sounded like Christian Contemporary pop. Not a bad album but it came at a bad time and I’m not here for it.
Beautiful voices and harmonies but ultimately disappointing. The song-writing and music is kinda the worst of treacly 80s country production, and feels pretty lightweight. This music is not up to the talent of these three women.
Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris - Trio Not bad, just a normal chill country album that more or less sounds the same through every track on it (except the last song). The lyrics there are sweet, however the melodies sound really overwhelming, considering the type of things they were singing about. Overall, this is decent. 1.- The Pain of Loving You = 5/10 2.- Making Plans = 6/10 3.- To Know Him Is to Love Him = 6/10 4.- Hobo's Meditation = 5/10 5.- Wildflowers = 7/10 6.- Telling Me Lies = 7/10 7.- My Dear Companion = 7/10 8.- Those Memories of You = 6/10 9.- I've Had Enough = 6/10 10.- Rosewood Casket = 5/10 11.- Farther Along = 8/10 FINAL SCORE: 6.2/10
I couldn’t get through this one. It sounds like what I thought and hated country music was as a kid. It was unpleasant to my ears, yet I enjoy them individually. Maybe it’s me.
I enjoyed imagining the fat, redneck layabout she might have been singing about. Otherwise, apart from those memories of you, found it dull.
Three giants of Country music, but ultimately a Country music album abd I'm not a fan of Country music. However, a beautiful cover of "To Know Him Is to Love Him", and I quite liked some of the songs that weren't Country, such as the Gospel song "Farther Along".
3 amazing voices, great outfits but this is just not for me.
Beautiful vocals. But I don't like country music.
I really thought I was warming up to country music, but this album just uses too many clichés of the genre, and it really represents a lot of what puts me off it.
They are good at something I don't like.
Not quite my thing, but I mean it's Dolly Parton so even if you don't like it you have to at least respect it.
Felt it would've been better if only any one of the three artists was involved. The vocal harmonies, though perfect, didn't sound appealing to me. Also felt very generic and old school.
This is so not for me. I hate this kind of sappy country music. It does nothing for me. I have nothing against any of these ladies, Dolly Parton is an absolute national treasure, but I just don't like this music at all. 2/5
Lots of this stuff feels formulaic and a little too polished. Their harmonies are solid, but still a bit of a snoozer. The songs that Dolly takes the lead are solid, Wildflowers is great, Rosewood Casket is killer. I didn't really care for much otherwise.
I had high hopes for this, but it felt a bit generic, unfortunately. None of the songs really grabbed me, and it didn't feel even equal to the sum of its parts, never mind greater than.
Neat colab
Et godt country-lyt, har sin charme, men også lidt trivielt
Very traditional country music. Lovely harmonies, dog shit baselines and a lot of twang. Can't knock the vocals, but the songs are dead boring.
Respect, but just too pretty for my soul
Very old, bland. Someone called it a "museum piece". Fitting, really
kinda mid, dont rwemember antyhing
All three of these ladies are immensely talented, and I've liked work by all of them, mostly when they've collaborated with artists who mitigated that pure country sound. On here, it's indulged and I have a life-long dislike of that sound.
To some country music aficionado this may be a great album but to me not so much.
Ved ikke helt hvad jeg forventede... lyder fint ig
Extremely boring, songs felt like they were the same.
Not my thing
I appreciate the greatness if these three women but I just can’t bear the sound of their voices together.
233/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
This sorta just passed me by, unfortunately. I don't really remember anything about it. 2/5
nothing im personally to interested in
Country music just not for me.
Hmm we'll see if I can last through this whole album. Johnny Cash is one thing, but a trio of cunt-ry women? My aunt used to like Linda Ronstadt. Kind of just listening passively but it's not too bad. Still not giving it more than 2 stars but somehow today it just fits. 2 stars
There’s no denying that these harmonies are great, and, yes, Dolly is a national treasure. But a lot of this music just bores me to tears. Probably would be better live, but as an album it doesn’t work for me. A classic example of being impressed by the artistry behind something but still not liking it.
3/10. Not my thing, has a song that I really like, prob up there in most listened to last year. Outside of that, just not my area of music. Isn't terrible but like
Can't really appreciate it.
Not really my jam. No disrespect to these fabulous ladies of country music, but it felt to me like there wasn’t too much variety with the songs. It was an almost like every song just lulled into the next and well… then the album ended. Sorry Dolly, but this just wasn’t my cup of tea.
Like 1 or 2 songs, just not my cup of tea
Never been a big Dolly or Ronstadt fan and this album confirms that. Beautiful voices but it just didn't do the trick.
Great voices, nice harmonies but not my type of music.
Dolly steals the show in this trio. Wildflowers is a highlight, Hobo’s Meditation (jeeeesus christ) is a low point that hasn’t aged well. Musically a lot of the songs are interchangeable; just vessels for the harmonies and to sit upon, which is a shame. A lot of country sub-genres are visited though and it was great to hear the twang of the slide guitar in The Pain of Loving You. Not something I’d revisit in a hurry but it was nice to be reminded what a great singer Dolly is.
After starting to think Kate Bush was the only woman in music I so so wanted to like this album. The sound of their voices is undeniably beautiful but this type of music just aint for me. I think part of this is that I realise (after reading other reviews) I just don't listen to lyrics at all. So this type of storytelling is really lost on me. However Spotify did guide me to Linda Ronstadt’s other work and that was really great.
Linda Ronstadt's backing band in 1971 went on to form the Eagles! I really wanted this to be good and interesting and engaging, but it wasn't for me. Too much heartache for a man, the songs were very slow and kind of indiscernible. Sorry, this one was not for me.
I get that Dolly Parton is famous for having the biggest beasts Hugh Hefner was unable to print and that she is also (deservingly) famous for her philanthropy, including more than $1,000,000 donation to help Moderna fight COVID but she's also famous for her music...? I love DP for what I know about her, but I was unable to put this album in the same column as the others. I found this upbeat and positive, yet really tiring and uneventful. She sure is an amazing person, but I'd like more proof that she's an amazing recording artist.
Con todo mi respeto a DP, pero no me interesa el folclore gringo
Three very talented singers, but this is not for me. I am not a fan of country ballads. I can really only tolerate rebel country. This album is slow and depressing. 2
Here’s a trio for you: this was mid, cap, and L
bättre än vad jag förväntade mig men fortfarande inte för mig. känsla i sången och steel-gitarren sitter som ett smäck
Three lovely ladies for sure but this was nothing but a bore.
Rating: 5/10 Meh. Choice cut: The Pain of Loving You
It was sort of fine. I struggle to maintain any sort of interest throughout a country album. It is fine for a song or two and then drags on
This is background music for me. If it comes on the radio that's fine, but I also don't listen to the radio. Will I listen to again: 0%
2.5 This being a sort of supergroup composed of probably the three most iconic women of country music, I was expecting a lot more out of this album. Not that I’ve ever claimed to be the biggest fan of any of the three prior (sorry, all icons for sure, just not my thing), but I don’t feel like I’m hearing the best any of them have to offer here. Rather than building each other up, it feels more like a dilution of each’s sound, to a point of genericness. Don’t get me wrong, vocally this is fantastic, but songwriting-wise, there really isn’t anything here that stuck out to me or felt like anything I haven’t heard before - from albums released years before this one no less. What should feel like a clash of titans ultimately doesn’t feel like anything special - which is really kind of a bummer. Supergroups are a really fun concept, so I kind of wish they had leaned a bit more into the fun factor instead of focusing so deeply on ballads. I will say, the most enjoyable part of this album for me is the album cover. I mean absolutely no disrespect by this - all three are gorgeous women (even still today) - but the 80s were not kind upon them. Though, was it really kind upon anyone?
Dolly is amazing, but her music just isn't really for me.
Not my jam. Fucking painful to get through. She has talent but I'm not the fan. 2 stars
Gospely but not outstanding as the names of this supergroup would suggest
It’s got some lovely vocal but I could listen to it more than once.
First song is good. The rest is 🍑
Boring
Oh for fuck's sake, do I really have to play this? No, I shan't. 2 stars, just because Dolly is a gem
If you know anything about what Dolly Parton sounds like then you can guess what this album will sound like. Classic old style country. Not much else to it. It doesn’t blow a person away. Choice cut: Wildflowers
"I've had enough", hei, samixet!
Aside from the song Jolene, Dolly Parton isn't an artist I've been into and listening to this has not changed that for me.
they have beautiful voices that sound nice together but the material is meh and the production is airless
All sounded the same.e
Sounded all the same. No thanks.
To Know Him Is to Love Him Wildflowers
I respect all these women, but this just isn't for me dawg
+1 Dolly point almost gives a 3
It has the same problem of most supergroups. When you combine individual voices like this, most of the time, it just feels hollow. The character gets sanded out, which is what makes artists like this great. Better than the Highwomen, at least. More like the Traveling Willburys. Interesting occasionally, but not nearly as good as the average album from any of them.
Devastatingly boring, just waiting for the end.
This was the Marvel Avengers team-up of its day
i love these ladies individually and these harmonies are angelic but the song choices here...real snoozefest, unfortunately.
Ok when Dolly was singing
They are all amazing songsters and it’s pretty to hear them songster together. That’s all I’ve got.
to much country for ... me
I had no idea this album existed. Definitely some star power here from some lady legends of the country game. I found this pretty sleepy though. Problem with this and a lot of country is that artists pretty consistent use the same formula over and over again. Gets old fast for me.
not my genre
I still hate country I guess. This sounds like the caterwauling that spews from the bandstand at a county fair. Makes my teeth itch. Twangy harmonies ain't for me.
This album sounds like mothballs and dust. I feel like I'm inhaling seven dusty spider corpses while listening to it. Brings back vivid memories of working in my grandpa's garage. I mean the dusty spider corpses, not the music. 2/5.
Just not my style…boring
I get it. Put three prominent female singers in a room together and put an album out. They can all really sing. However, doesn’t do much for me.
Meh, I’ve never really cared for country. A bunch of cover songs, twangy banjo, whining fiddle and bleating vocals. Just not for me.
Based on the cover artwork, my initial thought was WTF, is this a soundtrack for a naff US sitcom?!? As for the music itself; on the one hand I admired the vocal harmonies of these three talented ladies, but actual enjoyment was zilch. Way too corny
всем любви, но кантри и эти голоса не для меня
Ekki mitt te
Its cool but I probably will never relisten to this. The singing is really nice! 2.5/5
Maybe this is a classic for country music fans but I found it very slow and boring. Just couldn’t find anything interesting in it. 2.3/5
unremarkable.
Too country for me. It isn't horrible, I'm just not Scott.
Not a big fan
Three great voices, undoubtedly. Just not my cup of tea unfortunately.
Not terrible, but nothing interesting.
Dull dull dull I'm afraid. All three singers have great voices, and they mesh well together, but the songs are unbearably formulaic and drift really quickly into the background.
Nice
Lots of corn, but it's like, topped with smooth honey.
Overall -Ok so the highwomen is just the 2.0 version of this album -the harmonies are stunning -I mean it’s good, everything kinda sounds the sound tho -maybe it’s just cause I don’t resonate with country but this doesn’t do to for me, like what’s the so what?
Amazing harmonies, and some classic tunes, but really? Who'd decide to put this funereal dirge on for any reason?
Feminine classic country. Good variety of sound without being too sappy. I'm a fan of Dolly Parton as a human being, even though I would probably never put this on voluntarily. Solid work, but not what I want to listen to.
Certainly one of the albums that has been released in the history of music I'm sure these 3 heavyweights coming together for a collaborative record was a big deal at the time but it's all a bit bland. Maybe that's a function of not being any 1 artist's vision. Safe subject matter, mostly about missing a man I liked the vocal harmonies and it's very easy to listen to but I feel like I enjoyed it just as much the first time as I would the 10th. If I got to 10, which I won't I was going to give 3* before I realised that most of these tracks aren't even written by any of the 3 artists. Really what was the point of this? I don't mind covers that bring something interesting, but it just seems like 3 singers came together to produce a nice, but unremarkable record of covers to make some money. Yawn
Uhhhh, uh huhh uhhuhh. Heh, ya, heheh heh, heh. Uhhhhh, this sucks. Huh, huh uuhuuhh, huhuh.
I can understand why my great grandparents liked this kind of music back in the day but it's really just not my thing. Very impressive vocals though, I will say that.
I unlike it as much as I was expecting. I can't say they don't have a point.
Klare meg uten
It's ok, but I imagine not exactly groundbreaking, even in its era.
Gillar det till viss del, men blir ganska enformigt
Dolly har ju en av världens bästa röster. Helt otrolig. Men detta album är otroligt tråkigt. Alltså jättetråkigt. Snark. Inte dåligt dock. Men urbota trist.
Snark
This was a bit too country for me
Their harmonies are great, but it's kind of a one trick pony. By the final quarter of the album I'm not sure if I've heard distinct songs or just one long piece of music because all the songs have the same tempo, instrumentation, and harmonies. It's blends very well, but almost too well. Can an album be too cohesive?
Not so much for me.
Ei osu eikä uppoa
Dolly on kyl ihan jees, vaikka kantriin painottuukin.
