4 great folky album. Favorite songs: up on cripple creek, the night they drove old Dixie down

A bit of a surprising gem considering the overwhelming amount of soft rock dross that accounts for 60s output on this list. The album definitely drags during slower tracks, but when it leans into its groovy brand of gritty country rock, I can really go for it.

I really enjoyed hearing their debut album a while back in this collection, and I guess I thought this album would be more of the same, in a good way. And I guess it is, sort of, and I can see that this is considered a seminal album both for The Band and for rock music in general, but I found it really hard to get into it the way I did with "Music From Big Pink". There's no denying it has a lot of classic and revered songs, and it's all but impossible to avoid enjoying tracks like "Up on Cripple Creek", or appreciating the panoramic "The night they drive old Dixie down", but in the end it just didn't really click for me. A bummer, as I really enjoy and appreciate a lot of what Robbie Robertson has penned and composed, and The Band had a great cast of characters. It's clearly me, not them, and thus I bow to the wisdom of decades of music critics and feel compelled to award four stars for its place in the pantheon.

Robbie Robertson is an effing great songwriter, and The Band will always have a sentimental hold on my heart, created when I was a kid and my parents would play "The Weight" and we'd snicker at "Take a load off, Fanny." Though that track isn't on this album, no worries because you've got Cripple Creek, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Rag Mama Rag, and an old favorite "Across the Great Divide" (got my name in that song!). Play side A on repeat and pretty much ignore side B, imho.

The Band is always a welcome sound in my ears. Four stars.

Good album, sounds like classic American rock so I was very surprised they’re Canadian. Favorites: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

All time classic.

Great album with classics like Dixie and Cripple Creek

A few songs I really vibed with, the rest felt goofy by modern standards, but I get why its here.

Love a bit of theses geezers tbf Simpsons: I don’t think so

Probably the most influential band with a generic name that defies search engine optimization. They’re probably best known for backing Bob Dylan when he made his seismic step to electric guitar, but this eponymous album is a fine example of how good they are when they take centre stage. It still sounds fresh today, drawing on an American tradition that stretches back over a hundred years.

Fun and a little bit gritty of a sound. Good Southern Rock feel. Heck Yeah!

I do like this. No nonsense, good music.

Good but a little country for me

Sick album. 4.5 stars for me. Night they drove old dixie down is a classic.

The Review

I have no idea why I gave the last Band album a 3. They are so good and I have listened to them a lot. Every album that comes up will most likely be an automatic 4. Up On Cripple Creek is one of my top songs it is so fun to sing to. And Levon Helm is such a good singer while also drumming.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is an absolute classic. \"How do you wake up dead??\" Up On Cripple Creek is another classic. Love that dirty funk sound on it. Looked it up and it's a clavinet with wah-wah pedal. We need more of that in songs.

The boys; hollerin’. The guitars; twangin’. The ivories; slammin’. Good ole fun this one. Best track - up on cripple creek

This was borderline unlistenable for the first few tracks, but it gets more enjoyably woozy as it goes on, and I liked it. Evokes the feeling of being drunk, in a good way. Favourite songs: Whispering Pines, The Unfaithful Servant, King Harvest

From the first note of the first track. Legendary band. legendary songs. A great album all around.

Always a good listen

very earthy and americana but with more depth. comes out swinging from the first second and never lets the energy fade

I like the bands sound, so I probably rate it higher than deserves, but I enjoyed it, got a bit repetitive, but I'd be happy to listen again.

It is some good folky 60's rock. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down was my favorite, but Up On Cripple Creek stuck in my head the most.

Delightful southern gothic cosplay from these Canadian guys

Nice one.

A very good album, but not my favorite from them. The best songs are inescapable on Classic Rock Radio and television commercials.

Nice album, couple hits that still get plenty of play time on the radio.

A good old time, just great classic rock and roll. Contains "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Up On Cripple Creek" which were released as a killer double a side singe, both fronted by Levon Helms voice. Ridiculously good.

A big fan of this sound.

Really good album, not quite their best.

#5 This was a really enjoyable album. One of those I could put on during a road trip to just cut out a good 40 mins or put on during the weekend while cleaning or something. I like a lot of “The Band”s other songs. Just because I wish there was more “umph” to the album, I’m rating this one a 4

I like it. Gives me a fuzzy warm feeling. Just like those glorious beards.

One of my favorite bands from the 60s and 70s. Absolute classic with an unexpectedly awesome groove

80% Best: Up On Cripple Creek; Whispering Pines; Jemima Surrender; Look Out Cleveland; King Harvest (Has Surely Come) Must-Hear? Maybe

I feel like this is as cozy as late 60’s folk rock can be. It’s a nice slice of rugged Americana that doesn’t swing into country or come off as hokey. I could probably do without the Lost Cause nostalgia, though. Especially on The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. That Gone With The Wind type shit. But besides that, this was fairly relaxing. Favorite track: The Unfaithful Servant Other hits: Whispering Pines, King Harvest (Has Surely Come), Rockin’ Chair, Up On Cripple Creek

Top 3: 1. Whispering Pines 2. Rag Mama Rag 3. Up On Cripple Creek Overall - 7.9/10 I liked some of the songs a lot, but the rest felt somewhat bland to me.

Grew on me. Im aware its a landmark Americana album, but it didnt comoletely blow my mind.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is a 5 for me, so do I 5 the whole album? Nah

A very good album but not quite 5 stars for me. 4 stars or B+.

Cooler Sound

The Night they drove old dixie down = banger Rest solide

Solide Musik, hat mich gut unterhalten. Songs der Playlist hinzugefügt: The Night they drove old dixie down

Preferred this to music from big pink but lacks something I can't quiet put my finger on 3.5*

I'm pleasantly surprised by how much variety there is on this album. Given their history, I kind of expected Bob Dylan without Bob Dylan and thought I'd get some middle of the road folk music. While 'The Band' certainly has a folk backbone, there's strong influence of early rock n roll and Americana, with a nod to psychedelic rock. 'Jawbone' is particularly experimental. 'Whispering Pines' sounds like it could have been a Flaming Lips songs. I enjoyed this album more and more with each listen.

Not really for me

I like The Band! I’ll say it!

nice, lively

Actually enjoyed that, would listen again

Folky music by folky folk, the only album on this list that I’ve not regretted listening to a second time

Great timeless album. I grew up listening to and watching the last Waltz over and over again.

This is great, but I must say these guys always sound like they’re singing odes to dead animals. It’s beautiful and kind of funny. Just a real wholesome, sitting on a bale of hay in a rickety barn kind of album. It’s full of soul and storytelling. What I also really enjoy are these little prescient moments that almost sound formative to post-rock, especially on Rag Mama Rag and later (I can’t remember the track), I thought I heard BCNR. Interesting this debuted in 1969 - the same year as Led Zepellin’s debut. Different, but I think overall I enjoyed it the same, maybe slightly more for the folky / americana sounds. I couldn’t help but smile and think of a pastoral moment with some good friends and apple cider. Heartwarming. For that, I have to give it a four. Fav track: Dixie is the obvious winner, but Rag Mama Rag is my sleeper and Jemima Surrender is a lot of fun

I feel like I have to be in the right mood to listen to this kind of music, but if I heard this live at a country bar or was listening to it in the forest it would hit just perfectly.

Across The Great Divide - 8.3 Rag Mama Rag - 7.2 The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - 8.3 When You Awake - 6.9 Up On Cripple Creek - 7.4 Whispering Pines - 7.4 Jemima Surrender - 7.1 Rockin Chair - 6.9 Look Out Cleveland - 7.3 Jawbone - 7.0 The Unfaithful Servant - 7.3 Kings Harvest - 7.5

Pretty good album all around. Nothing particularly stuck out, though.

Upon seeing the release date of this album, as well as the cover, I was expecting a plethora of slow whiny country songs but I was pleasantly surprised. I hadn't heard of this group before, but this left a good first impression. favorite track: Jemima Surrender

Music for the big pink arvostelussa "Ei yhtyeen parhaita levyjä" Noh... uskomattomia kappeleita siellä... Niin täälläkin... laitetaas 4-4 iso respect

Enjoy this type of music. I don't believe I've heard any of these songs before. 4/5

Love this record. It’s warm. It feels nostalgic.

Solid classic rock. 3.6

Good ole classic rock.

Ah, the Band. Of course.

Pretty good, listened twice

Always a fan of the band. Think I liked the other album more, which is surprising because this has my first favorite of their songs, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Then again, my favorite version of that song is actually from the live album. Anyway, still a great album, they've got such a solid sound, and I really loved the more acoustic guitar stuff that popped up on here. Favorite tracks: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Across the Great Divide, Rockin Chair, Jawbone, The Unfaithful Servant. Album art: Pretty unassuming, just a band photo (or Band photo) in sepia, brown frame. It's actually a bit of a classic to me, but yeah, nothing too special. 4/5

A really enjoyable album, wasn't expecting much but I really enjoyed it actually.

Really good for it's time.

Always love me some Band!

Ok, fairly upbeat classic rock

Quite enjoyed this - a bit of a few different genres mixed in here- boogie woogie even! Laid back and good to listen to- apart from the biggie the other tracks are unknown to me.

excellent use of the Clavinet, an enjoyable album from a band I has never heard of previously

In my first The Band review, I made a crack that I gave it a higher score than my first Beatles album. Well, I have now reviewed many Beatles albums, and they’ve got two five stars, and really I was a bit harsh on The White Album. Now that I’ve had more time to digest it fully, it really does deserve the full five. Sgt Peppers too. But what of The Band? Does their self titled second album get them that magical rating? I’m not sure. Unlike with Music From Big Pink where I could identify it’s influence on later music that I like, The Band seems more straightforward Country Rock with bits of Soul influence in there, which ended up confusing me a bit. It’s not bad, in fact I think it’s pretty good, but it’s a combination that shouldn’t work, and frankly I’m not sure it always does. So, it’s gonna have to still be a four. Too bad The Band, but I have enjoyed my time with you. It’s been an interesting ride

"The great divide" is incredibly classic sounding Love the country, outlaw

Solid hippy rock

Bluesy, folky, country-y felt like some funk soul in there too at points. Good mix of songs. Having only heard "The Weight" before by The Band I was unsure what to expect. Some great music and good vocals to boot. I'm feeling happy, take 4 of my stars.

Although the rest of the album wasn't as good as the first few songs, still a solid listen.

Chill weekend listening, cooking something perhaps

A pleasant surprise! I was worried it would be kinda country corny and lacking in energy, but it’s quite musical, balanced, and enjoyable, and some of the tunes actually cook! There are some slow moments, of course, but for the most part they are earned.

Chad. The most famous song is probably my least favorite.

Mg me robé Across The Great Divide.

Really enjoyable, Rocking Chair stood out in terms of goosebumpery! Great musicianship, I'd go 4.5 if I could just because it felt a bit bloated

Great example of southern country rock. This one has some great songs and some that are really good. 3.75/5.

Great road trip music!

Enjoyed this one slightly more than 'Music From Big Pink', with 'Whispering Pines' as my standout.

I lived in Richmond, VA for a decade. When we had twins we moved back to PA. I vividly remember listening to "The night they drove old Dixie down" as we left our house in Richmond in a van packed full of kids and random stuff. King Harvest really stole the show for me.

Really enjoyed it! Good album overall!

Stellar A-side

Favorite songs: Rag Mama Rag/Up on Cripple Creek Least favorite: Across the Great Divide I wish artists these days brought actual instruments to the studio. Sometimes I felt like I was playing that guess the instrument game from headbangers with the amount of random instruments they would use in each song. Some of these invoked a heavy nostalgic vibe for my music history class from my AA (I imagine Ben Folds was inspired by this type of folk rock when he wrote 1 angry dwarf and 200 solemn faces, which might be my favorite song I discovered from that class). The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is a bit grating at points and almost hit the least favorite list. On the higher tempo songs, when they hit a groove it's pretty damn good. Also the fucking wah wah pedal and ORGAN on Up on Cripple Creek ? Oh hell yeah, give me the funk These mfs know how to make music, yeehaw brother This is an honest 4/5 which is crazy ngl, was not expecting to enjoy this one at all really

Liked most of their songs, fire.

I’m hearing Grateful Dead and lots of country. Not bad for what seems like a garage band sound.

Great stuff. 3.77

NOT BAD.

Cleaner and more refined than their debut, featuring more questionable lyrics and themes, but ultimately a miles ahead grander record and about as solid as late-60s can get.

I could definitely listen to this in a field somewhere...for sure!

I mean its alright? Pretty Good even?

Forgot to write. More of what I liked from the previous album I had listened to. Gets me in an upbeat mood. Whispering Pines was my favorite. Standouts: Across The Great Divide, When You Awake, Whispering Pines, Look Out Cleveland, and The Unfaithful Servant.

Buen disco

Listened to many times, including recently after reading Testimony, Robbie Robertson's autobiography (highly recommended). There are two classics on this album, and I like the variety amongst the rest of the songs. But as much as I respect Robertson's ability to handle just about all of the songwriting duties and dole the songs out to the three different lead vocalists in the band, I just don't enjoy the album as much as I'd like to. Going to give it 4 stars for the classic songs which are amongst my favorites of all-time. "Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train 'Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again"

The vibe and feel The Band is great. The hits are clearly timeless and I think they're important to hear and be on the list. There's a ton of merit to them but some songs are duds. I'd like to hangout with them and I'm sure they were great live.

this really surprised me - was heaps of fun

Great album!

This was one of the early albums that helped shape and form the Americana genre. It’s definitely a more traditional rock album with country, folk, and blues influences. Most of the songs are historically based and revolve around life in rural America. The album is pretty diverse in its own way, and I love the keyboards and piano elements. They really give the album depth and texture.

Love the band

These mfs are twangy af but they’re also super artful. Fire ass combo

Very americana.

i liked et but i could not listen to it all cus i ran out of data>:(

Srorico

> The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down > Up on Cripple Creek

Great Southern Rock Band!

old dixie

Easy listing chill vibes. Love it.

Good album…. But I can think of a lot of other bands that deserve to be called THE band instead.. The Beatles, for instance. Sugar Ray, for another instance.

Excellent vibes. Very evocative lyrics that really mad me want to live in their fantastical version of the south

Real chiller music ... vibes are absolute perfect. this is the vibe im on this summer

3.7/5 - listened 2x.

Geggjað smooth. Flott plata og öflugt Band.

Mjög góð plata í heild. Old Dixie og Up on Cripple Creek frábær lög og eins fannst mér Whispering Pines ótrúlega fallegt. Eitt lag, Jawbone, reyndar mjög leiðinlegt .

Americana at its' heart: The more I listen, the more I see the Band along with Bobby D and the Laurel Canyon musicians leading a counter movement to the massive wave of English rock and pop. Instead of sharpness, the music sprawls in a way similar to the Beatles late work, but with artistic integrity, cooperation, and the ability to be played live.

Vanguard of Americana. I didn't realize they were Dylan's backing band? Up on Cripple Creek is the sound.

Yes. Yes. Yes!!

Soulful country rock. “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” is a deserved classic.

Such great lyrics. The night they drive old Dixie down is a top 50 song of all time for me.

Godt band!!

nice easy listening Americana Eagles have competition

I liked this! Good classic, rustic America feel to it.

W sumie bardzo fajne. Taki folk rock, może stare country. Czuć klimat amerykańskiego miasteczka i rednecków. 4/5

I'm in the tank for The Band. Absolutely love 'em. I think they have higher highs than what's on this album, so this doesn't get all the way to 5 stars for me. I considered it, though!

Standout songs: Across the great divide Whispering Pines King Harvest

A lot better than I thought it would be. Bought it now.

Rag Mama Rag, Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Up on Cripple Creek. Old timey Americana rock genre with other groups like Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Not a fan of the southern thing but good music

# Playlist track - Across The Great Divide # Notes - Hated the silly joke with the name, but the opening track is solid! - Great country album throughout!

pretty vibey! great tunes

Very enjoyable folk! Quite listenable

Great classic album, what's not to enjoy?

An excellent and influential classic

Groovy and fun

The band is classic. So many of these tunes have been in the background all my life. They hold up extremely well. I love their grooves and off kilter harmonizing.

I like The Band! Always enjoyable -- rock to listen to with ur dad drinking a beer haha

While I personally find myself listening to the "Best Of" compilations these days, this album was a LOT of influence in my youth. Thanks to the album club for providing something of substance to start the week. :)

Really enjoy this album and group, a couple timeless classics on there that I listen to regularly.

This is some real good americana. Folk blues and the like by some good musicians

Het eerste nummer wat er tussenuit springt is The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Rating: 8,5/10 Highlights: Across the Great Divide, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Whispering Pines, Jemima Surrender

Already know this a 5 star

I bet seeing The Band live was awesome. Listening to this album made me want to watch The Last Waltz again. Their music just makes me feel good. The harmonies, the piano and guitar licks, and their loose jangly sound make the music approachable. I wouldn’t have thought of this as a concept album without it being explained as such, but I can hear it. Great stuff. 4.2

Really good, better than "Big Pink" imo. Has the same rootsy appeal but a little more refined. Almost hard to believe a Canadian can write such classic Americana. Has a bar band energy, which I like. 4.2

The Band is one of those groups that seem to kind of fly under the radar. I know their work to a certain degree so there should be no surprises but I still enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I like their whole vibe with the vocals, harmonization, interesting blend of instrumentation and the rural/old Americana kind of feel in performance and song writing. Good stuff and an enjoyable listen.

I found Songs From The Big Pink to be a huge, discordant disappointment. This is excellent. It's musical, whimsical, just plain good.

Great songs and instrumentation

RIP Robbie Robertson 😔

The only Band that can live up to the name 'THE BAND.'

A delight

Wow, this is great. Very close to giving this one 5 just on my first impression. Tight, groovy, soulful and much more. What a great The Band

Jätte jättebra

Actually better than I expected. A solid album that deserves a listen. I'm actually glad this generator recommended me this. Just 998 albums to go...

Great album

I enjoyed listening to the album. A real classic Rock And Roll album. Great writing in the Band.

I liked this album a lot. Good music relaxing and a car drive

So much classic music with amazing songwriting. Every tune is a gift

pretty good folk and country tunes. just some songs drag a little

Great name for a band. And historically quite interesting how they formed. Their albums are all topnotch examples to what a group of people with excellent music skills can do when they hang out together. They tie to a country/folk sound in which a band was really about performing live for a group of people for entertainment. Without being throwbacks to the 1800's they capture a sound, a style, and story-telling that is mixed with rock and modern times.

very bob dylan

very nice 3.5

Classic album by classic band. Hard to believe that was 1969!!!

Nice funky folky feel.

Me ha gustado bastante

Good one

Just a very solid album - high 4 stars

Solid. Made me want to watch the last Waltz again.

Honesty when you are given an album called The Band by a band called The Band then you don't really start out on the right note. However it is a very good chill 60s country album that kinda kills it. Not a life changer but very good

Easy classic listening.

Surprisingly timeless. Felt like a new album.

4.2 - It's got "Up On Cripple Creek", possibly my favorite "classic rock" song. Lots of other great cuts on here, including "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Side B wanes a little with "Look Out Cleveland" (which is not a city that inspires song for me) but ends on a high with soulful singing on "The Unfaithful Servant."

Du rock sympathique et plutôt posé

some songs are a bit too slow, but most of the album is easy listening with solid tunes, very relaxing to listen to

Had The Big Pink just a couple of days ago. Well I don’t like this one as much. Purely because it lacks The Weight 4

Rock of its time with some more modern sounds

Pretty good. Across the Great Divide was great.

Enjoyed the album. Variety of song styles. Enjoyed the variety of instruments played as well.

I thought I already knew all famous and important bands of the 70s. But I must admit I did not know The Band at all. So this was a great listening, getting to know yet another good 70s band.

Love the old-timey feel to this. Sounds like every song was conceived of, written, and performed in a saloon or on the front porch of a log cabin.

It was ok

That was pretty good

4/5. Probably one of the most recognizable Americana album and songs. Overall, a great listen from front to back but not all individual songs are great. Hits are great (despite the obviously problematic Dixie Down) and there are some others that stand out. I keep seeing 10/10 on every site but there are definitely not all perfect songs on here. Sure, great lyrics but melodies are where it fails sometimes. Again, it's close to perfect, just some misses along the way.

A fantastic album showing how good a band they were. I know they did a lot with Dylan but much more than that. Some classic songs and hidden gems.

OG roots rock before Americana was a thing. 4/5

Not my favorite from The Band (that would be "Music from the Big Pink"), but a very nice listen, none the less. Feels like it wants to be an important album, but really doesn't expand the folk rock sound too much. There are moments, but not enough to say that it should be a "must listen". I also don't like Levin Helm's Kermit the Frog vocal inflection on some of the songs, so that definitely hold it back for me.

December 29, 2023 An open-faced steak sandwich of a record With extra gravy HL: “Across the Great Divide”, “Dixie”, “When You Awake”, “Cripple Creek”, “Jawbone”

Music from Big Pink has gone up from 4 stars to 5 since I rated it on here - maybe this will too. King Harvest was a great ending!

Yeah, a classic

Solid album.

very stellar folk album i think :0 7.8/10

An album drenched in a folky Americana. Good vibes but didn’t fully connect with me. Really liked “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” which makes sense because of its critical success! Fav song: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Why are they Canadian?

Nice country-rock infusion vibes, some oddballs tho, but all-in-all a great listen

The piano is really nice. I like harmonicas too. The singing is fine, both good and bad - a little whiney. Pretty good album to work to.

Rating: 3,75/5

A great laid back honky-think Americana album. I will be listening again!

excellent album but not my cup

Yeah, that's a good time. Nothing truly outstanding but it sure is a big ol' pile of solid jams and I'm here for that.

I'm a casual fan of The Band. I usually listen to The Last Waltz or Music From Big Pink and I adore The Basement Tapes with Bob Dylan. I haven't played this album much besides Up On Cripple Creek. It's really good. The album as a whole paints a beautiful landscape. Not too much stood out for me. The standards, plus I really liked Jawbone. I'd hear it again.

A truly authentic album, where the musicians came together with creative honesty. Sublime.

Jemima Surrender onwards I loved. King harvest a highlight!

Really fun, tons of catchy songs

Bob Dylan picked a good backing band, still gotta see their Scorsese concert flick.

Classic. Some of these songs I have heard way too many times and I am not sure I need to hear again, but classic nonetheless.

Some nice songs I did not know.

The album is far better than you would think at first glance. “Up on cripple creek” is a fun ride.

People really love this album and I’ve never gotten why. I like this album, probably my favorite album by them, but I don’t understand why some people act as if it’s this special creation that belongs with “the greats”. It’s a good album, that’s all. It has a couple flaws here and there, but overall, good. 4/5

All killer no filler

There's a real ragtime theme running throughout this. Contemporary references can't be heard. The only way you can describe this record is that it's an album by The Band. You can almost hear the sound of beards growing from start to finish. I wouldn't call it funky, but they know how to lay down a groove with the bass. The album is very wholesome and worthy in a way that only The Band can get away with. Mumford and Sons this is not. Thank fuck for that.

Loved the horn/saxophone work in The Great Divide. Lots of horn work throughout. Strings too in Rag Mama Rag. Not to mention the Tuba coming through. An album I hadn't spun in full, few songs recognizable, Can't go wrong with Up on Cripple Creek!

Smooth gentle Rock Album. I really like the piano parts in Whispering Pines, which is my album's favorite. 4.3

Rating: ** 4 ** Notes: Actually really liked the Album, prbl would have not even found it on my own. Really nice music. Note to myself: look for other songs of literally the Band Songs which stood out in no particular order (credits to Uncle Gue for the idea): "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Town" "King Harvest" "Across The Great Divide" ------------------------------------------------------------- Rating Scale: 1- very bad 2- bad 3- neutral 4-good 5-very good additonaly -/+ sign if necessary

Pretty good. Up On Cripple Creek is a five star song. Overall this album is weaker than I remember. I went through a small phase of getting into The Band about 20 years ago. Honestly my favorite album of theirs is The Basement Tapes, even though that is basically a Bob Dylan album.

This is how I wish Grateful Dead sounded

Great album. Definitely worth many more listenings. All pure gems and an amazing gentle moving fun vibe.

Surprisingly enjoyable big fan of the saxophone

Enjoyed the listen. The Band is one of these groups that I really enjoy the music and the lyrics, but have to be in a laid back mood to listen to. Not something to put on the running list, but good stuff nonetheless.

I have listened to the full album before but not many times. A few really big hits, but the entire album is great. Nice listen.

Play it fucking loud

Topplaat van The Band. The Band die The Band heet als in ‘dit is The Band waarmee Bob Dylan elektrisch ging.

Exceptionally good. That opening 5-song run is really great. The warmth.

Love their warm brown sound. Want to listen to the album more and get to know the songs that are less familiar. Until then, I’m giving this 3.5, rounding up.

Folk rock vibes. Bob Dylan like

It’s a good mood for an album. great music and vocals. It’s a good rock and country fusion. 7/10

Nearly a 5

Band I like their super raw vocal sound . it’s just like a bunch of guys shouting in harmony. The whole vibe is like a drunken singalong. “When I awake” is great never heard that song. “Cripple creek” is so groovy. Always liked Levon helm’s feel on drums and voice. “Look out Cleveland” is cool. Kind of cool that these guys all sing and play a bunch of instruments and switch off on drums guitar, keys, trombone, sax and fiddle. Weird amount of songs about the old American south. Super influential band and album. Tough one to rate.

There are other albums of theirs I like more but rag, Dixie, and cripple creek are all great classics. I like the last waltz version of Dixie a lot more.

This is the first time I have listened to an album by The Band. Maybe today we would call it "Alt Country", or "Folk Rock". Whatever you want to call it, it's good.

7/10 good

Love this band sounds and style. Got some kinda chill southern rock something to it, but easy to jam to.

good quality folk rock. really enjoyable listen. highlights: “the night they drove old dixie down”, “up on cripple creek”, “look out cleveland”.

This is like Death Cab and Guster meets the Beach Boys. I actually really liked it.

I liked it better than the other The Band album I listened to. still an organ or voice tone that can grate.

Pretty awesome. Cripple creek's going on the camping playlist

Some fine tunes on this album.

Bah luhlalalala hewhooo

I don't really like how country they can get sometimes but this is obviously a very good album

The Band bangs

Classic.

Whenever I listen to The Band I start wondering if they might be the best band ever. Maybe not their best album here, but it's a great one.

spectacular, really really good

The kind of record you put on in the company of babbling brooks and crackling fires.

I enjoyed this. A right rollicking bit of Americana and rock n roll. The longer tracks like Jawbone, Unfaithful Servant and King Harvest were a bit tedious but the rest is jaunty enough drinking music.

You can tell that this is a great live band by this album. Whispering Pines is lovely. I like that the prettiness is kind of tempered with the organ's voicings. Makes me wanna drink lemonade on a porch.

Country/folky/classic rock. Lots of vocal.harmony

The two hits are really good. The music has good pace and the harmonies are excellent. Once we get passed the two hits, I like the songs with tempo but don’t like the ballads. I’m between 3 and 4 on this one and will round up to show the Canucks some love.

A very rootsy, Americana collection, which seems to be more cohesive than their first LP. The multiple vocalists can make it sound like a compilation album, though that’s a good thing. I decided to watch the live, Last Waltz version of The Night they Drove Ole Dixie Down, which is spine-tingling.

I like this a lot. Definitely felt like a concept album even though I can’t identify a story or even a central theme in the lyrics; the sound itself is sepia-toned like the album cover. Great melodies. Did wish I was listening to the Joan Baez version of Old Dixie, but I’ll respect the original. Best song: Up on Cripple Creek

This sounds like the band was shot forward in time from the Dust Bowl to write folk, but I actually kind of dig it. It's one of those albums you have to be in the right mood for, but it feels like there was so much soul put into it that it kind of roped me in. If I had to work in a field this is what I would play.

Some good old fashioned rock and roll. Sounds great, is a little funky and a bit of fun. Extremely easy to listen to. Nice progressive lyrics and vocals. Really enjoyable and accessible. Score: 80 Art: 60

Always good listening.

A lovely bit of homespun comfort from the country-folk-rock-Canadiana/Americana boys. How good is Dixie Down?

Excellent lazy summer rock

Loved Big Pink but somehow never got round to this. It’s great and a reminder that I ought to watch Last Waltz finally.

Just some guys being dudes, hangin out. 7/10

Loved it

this shit fucks!!! It’s like cool Bob dylan

i like it

A bit too lethargic for my current mood. I know I generally like this album, but it's more of an early morning album than a night/evening one. Also, The Grateful Dead have sort of ruined this for me. I would probably give this 3 1/2 stars, but based on the string of somewhat painful albums I've had, I'm going to round it up.

Some good ol Swamp rock

Rustikt.

Ahh Cripple Creek being the highlight this is a relaxing album. Great muscisionship.

It wasn't that bad: granted I listened to this album after having has it skipped for over a month but honestly I enjoyed it. Love the rock aspects whilst also containing that classic country tang to it.

Jackson Pollock: Good start, 'the night they drove old dixie down' hit me, loved the vocals and piano. 'When you wake' is a solid entry, really pleasing folk just staying far enough for country. Captains daughter line kinda country bumpkin. Favs: The night... When you wake Least Favs: Overall: Yeah pretty solid folk rock, at times a bit country for my enjoyment. But more varied instrumentaiton and vocals then that. Start seemed stronger than the end. solid 7.8/10

Tämä on hauska mutta sydämellinen, ei cringe

It’s a great album, not something I always go to, but I do listen to a lot of the songs individually a lot

A couple of monstrously amazing songs on this one, of course, and most of the rest are really damn good too but it just never quite hits as a whole album for me as much as I want it to every time. Very close, but not quite.

A great album by the Band with some true classic songs, along with some deep tracks that make this a solid record. Still sounds fine after all these years!

Enjoyable folkish record Saved tracks: Across The Great Divide, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Up On Cripple Creek, Look Out Cleveland, King Harvest (Has Surely Come)

Much more enjoyable than I expected, full of flavour and well produced, this isn't usually the sort of thing I would listen to but it definitely hit the spot for me

Great 60's sound. Loved the bluegrass meets pop feel. Would listen again

Solid American Rock n Roll music.

softy and comfy )) yeah the best description

I can't help but hear Randy Newman every time I listen to this group

Just a whole lot of jams. This album came out 4 days before Abbey Road. What a week. Best track: Up on Cripple Creek

Folk Rock / Roots Rock / Country Rock Favs: "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Up on Cripple Creek"
