Reviews (page 5 of 6)
Higher energy than Ghosteen which was a breath of fresh air. Nothing that got me excited while listening to it.
Better than I thought it would be, I actually like his vocals
Not his best
Ja det er sikkert gode sange, men det er er sgu også lidt depri
It was okay
this might get just on enthusiasm
I know Nick Cave is beloved, and I never really understood why - but I somehow kind of missed him in the 90s. Listening through this I can say that…it’s fine. Interesting voice, not a lot of new ground broken, but pretty ok. I really wish this thing had half stars, because this album is a solid 3. It feels unfair considering I’ve given worse albums 3 stars that deserved 2.5, and better albums I would have loved to give 3.5, and there’s just no way I can give this 4 stars. So it’s an accurate score that feels unfair to other albums based on the limitations of the rating system
Strangely interesting.
Very solid album
Wasn't that familiar w Nick Cave before so excited to check this out. Strong start, kinda theatrical sounding. Is this a rock opera? Got less interesting over time but still enjoyable enough. However, immediately after it ended I was compelled to put on some Tom Waits, sort of to set the record straight or else the universe would be out of balance.
I don't really even like the Nick Cave songs that I pretend to like and none of them were on this album so what's a girl to do? I'm giving him a 3 because at least it was well-executed.
Solid if unmemorable.
Ganz nett, kann man sich anhören.
hat was,das ganze. Erinnert ich an "The Doors" und Meat Loaf
Took a little bit to get used to the style, quite enjoyed in the end, 6/10
Murder ballad!
-it’s giving that jimmy fallon game, like ok, sea shanty’s but in punky blues and Celtic punk rock style with a hint of mariachi -seemingly like it’s gonna be a concept album -it’s the type of music that doesn’t sound delicious to the ears but the effort is astounding
Everybody knows that kid from high school who went out of their way to be in your face edgy. It wasn't enough to be edgy, they need to constantly remind you how edgy they are at all times. For me, our edgy kid used to make people dare him to snort wasabi even though nobody wanted to dare him in the first place. Well, this is what happens when that kid gets to make an album. I thought I was going to really despise this album but edge lord does folk Americana became oddly endearing by the end of it. I don't hate it.
This was pretty intense. More of what I like from Nick Cave.
How many Nick Cave albums one must listen to before dying? According to this list the answer is "Way too many"
nick cave is a weird one. i usually like the beginning and then i just get tired of it. i'll leave this a 3
Not bad, liked the softer songs best.
That was... good. But does not make me want to listen to this album again and again.
weirdly joyful but not something I would ever want to listen to.
I was surprised at how much I liked a couple of these songs, especially Papa Won’t Leave You and Straight To You. He sounds kind of Elvis-like in vocal timbre and song style. The album tapered off in quality after the first few tracks, and I had to straight up skip Christina the Astonishing, so I’ll give it a 3.
This is the 3rd nick cave album we’ve gotten on this list and I thought it was definitely the weakest of the bunch. Still, I just like his music in general. Even though this was weak for his standards I still feel a 3
Thought I liked it initially but then after a second listen decided it was ok but not good
From this I come to like Nick Cave. Thing is though I think this is album 3 from him and they all about the same.
2.5
Dark, pulsing, and rather monotone.
Like Murder Ballads with less personality and theme.
He won me over during the course of listening to all of these albums. That being said, Jesus does Nick Cave have too many albums on this list.
Although it sounded kind of dark, This was kind of interesting. There were parts of it that reminded me of Johnny Cash, others that reminded me of Kris Kristofferson,
Good album. I like the somewhat raw feeling of the delivery even though I can hear how professional and solid all the musicians and performers are.
Interesting. A rough old knees-up in a very rowdy late-night bar.
Falls off a bit but we don't have half stars here. What to do.
Fine.
Okay, but need to pay atention to Lyrics
Kind of Cave by numbers I thought
Generally enjoyed it.
Not for me
Why the hell is this first song almost 6 minutes long?? Could have been half as long for the same impact or more. Overall I see why people find this compelling, but overall to me it feels overwrought and tiring. I think I can handle a few songs at a time, but the album is too much.
3.5
Not their best, not their worst
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds would be an amazing indie or folk punk band if they dropped Nick Cave. Haunting background vocals, passionate raw drumming, and aggressive acoustic and electric guitar, cinematic strings, and lush organ lay a solid, fever-dream landscape that sounds every bit like a intimate stage-play, only to be absolutely ruined by the lead singer. Cave’s vocals are melodramatic, pitchy, and unimpressive; moreover, they are mixed with short-decayed delay/reverb, giving the impression that he’s doing an awful karaoke cover of his own music. I’d love to listen to a Bad Seeds instrumental album, but something tells me Nick Cave couldn’t resist yelling his nonsense over that too. Stand out tracks include “Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry”, “Brother, My Cup Is Empty”, “John Finn’s Wife”, and “Loom of the Land”.
Hardcore Flight of the conchords featuring a real life vampire from What We Do in the Shadows. Rough, passionate vocals in a rock opera style. Haunted, raw, and dense - (post-punk meets rockabilly) Boisterous and fun - found myself smiling despite how grim it is. I would absolutely love to see this album as a live show.
5 Stars for ‘straight to you’ the rest of album a 2.
This certainly felt like a Nick Cave album. Can't say I REALLY liked it, but there were definitely some good songs here. Could come back to this, feels like a 3.5.
3/5. Liked the gritty, coarse feel. Felt nice.
Great. Some sea shanty vibes
I definitely prefer this more upbeat country/rock style sound as opposed to the dreary mumbling style that Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds has come to be known for. Now I understand how they became popular and I guess that generation kinda just grew with their style and kept listening. Best: Papa Won't Leave You, Henry Worst: Christina the Astonishing
Good
A bit better than okay, but overdone, as per usual with this guy. It's more accessible and organic than much of his work. "Straight to You" and "When I First Came To Town" are best tunes. The voice is very much an acquired taste and one suspects he works at and is intentional about making it so. Let's be clear, there are too many NC records on this list, by a factor of at least 2.
Even though I’m never excited to get more of his albums, I never really have a bad time with them anymore. Even though that junkyard album was catastrophic to my opinion of his musical talent, it’s hard to deny that he’s a seasoned vet when it comes to rock operas and meat loaf esque bombastic drama.
Un disco bastante performático y teatral. Las 2 primeras canciones no me gustaron y pensé que el álbum iba a ser malísimo, pero después cambió y repuntó.
Not bad
Ganz gut und ein abwechslungsreiches Album, aber die Vocals sind nicht ganz mein Ding.
This album had a very epic grand type feel to it, which I did like but sometimes it felt like it was trying too hard to be theatrical. Still pretty good though, it definitely does succeed in feeling very epic at moments, particularly in the first half. Although it definitely takes a dip in quality towards the end of the album, and I start to lose interest a bit. But the closing track is really good so at least it ends on a high
That was really short. I dunno. Didn't leave a lasting impression. Nick Cave sings story songs. And this is one of those albums. Seems pretty typical of his oeuvre.
No big bangers for me here, but it delivers on the darkness and the storytelling. A good listen and not necessarily for the music?
Nick Cave at it again with an orchestral backing, dark aggressive vocals, and appropriate themed lyrics. This time with fast folk dance accompaniment, lead by a powerful acoustic guitar. First four songs are pretty strong, but it loses that momentum and becomes a bit forgettable. "Straight to You" is a really great song but somewhat of an outcast. Favorites: Papa Won't Leave You, Straight to You, John Finn's Wife
2.5 kanskje.
Not the best I've heard
interesting sound - didn't like it as much as the other album, but good.
A different side of Nick Cave, still plumbing the depths of darkness but this time styled as a road-trip/highway album a la Songs for the Deaf. Enjoyed the more uptempo takes on Cave's classic sound, and wished his discography included more selections like this one. My main complaint is, like always, the runtime and editing of certain tracks. I get Cave is trying to do something more cinematic and encompassing, but you could easily scoop out 5 verses from the opener and have a much punchier, shorter track. All in all, one of my faves from Nick so far – definitely see a few tracks popping up in my listening rotation.
Confusing, but oddly compelling... This is Nick Cave album number FIVE. It has to be the last one, right?!
It’s Nick Cave again, and there are other albums I enjoyed more. Ive had my fill at this point, I get the shtick. It’s not my shtick.
Dark but has a good strum that is easy to bop your head to
dobar, nije mi među favoritima njegovim, al je svejedno dobar. 3-3,5/5
I don’t know why I can’t get into Nick Cave. I like this one less than that other one. Still not bad.
with my third nick cave and the bad seeds album, i've come to see the variety included in their albums! henry's dream has a fast punk tempo with folk vocals and sometimes has a gentler blues cadence. this isn't necessarily music i'd normally listen to, but i can appreciate it and its uniqueness, both for the band itself but also for music in general.
While I haven't seen this album categorized as a concept album, it kind of felt like one to me? I don't know, maybe all Nick Cave albums are a bit conceptual. I will also say this: hearing Nick Cave's albums is typically unlike anything else on this project. That said, I didn't love this album, but I didn't hate it. Some of songs really caught my attention, especially the closing track, "Jack the Ripper". This album is a mix of dark and gritty blues, punk, folk, and rock. Certainly a unique entry!
Love it.
Toch wel weer veel moois gehoord op dit album.
Mooi, maar soms is gaat nick’s stem nogal z’n eigen weg.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "Henry's Dream," released in 1992, is a bold exploration of dark, narrative-driven rock. Cave's lyrical prowess shines in tracks like "Papa Won't Leave You, Henry," and the band's performance is powerful. However, the album may feel less innovative compared to some of their other works. While maintaining Cave's signature intensity, it lacks the groundbreaking impact of previous releases. The production, while solid, doesn't break new ground. "Henry's Dream" is a competent addition to the band's discography, earning a respectable 3/5 for its strong storytelling and performance, but it doesn't reach the heights of their best work.
3,5
The music itself was fine. Still really dislike Nick Cave's voice and face. 5/10
B- Papa Won't Leave You, Henry 3 I Had a Dream, Joe 4 Straight to You 3 Brother, My Cup Is Empty 3 Christina the Astonishing 4 When I First Came to Town 3 John Finn's Wife 3 Loom of the Land 3 Jack the Ripper 3 I only knew one Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds song before this. My expectations were actually pretty low because of all the hate I've seen for this guy online. However, I like his stuff!
When the first track started, I thought I would like the record more than I actually did. It’s fine but didn’t change my life.
More upbeat than I expected. Hard shick Nick Cave recorded here
This is storytime with Nick Cave and it is as depraved and insane as one would imagine. It’s a twisted tale told through Caves crooning wail. This really isn’t to my particular taste. I prefer his work with The Birthday Party. This though will hit hard for the black made up audiences that’ll generally enjoy Caves current project.
I respect the musicianship but Cave's Gothic creepy thing just isn't for me.
Surprised to see this one in the list, almost all early Nick Cave albums are much better. From rough ones like Her to Eternity, Your Funeral My Trial to the moving ones like Boatsman Call, No More Shall We Part and the Good Son. So only 3 stars for this one
It's got a little bit of a Meatloaf vibe. Straight to You sounds a little too much like I'm in the dentist office in the early 2000s (Hootie and the blowfish). Brother my cup is empty - there's a bit of a cowboy vibe in here (like devil went down to georgia) - like the singer has a point to prove. Christina the Astonishing is a little too much telling a story over vamped music - it's super uninteresting, except for maybe the lyrics, which I'm not interested in. It's really mostly fine. It's well produced, the sound is pretty good. It sounds sorta like normal music although John Finn's Wife has a lot of strings and production value which is cool. It's too narrative for what I prefer.
First experience with full Nick Cave & Bad Seeds album. Fun dark romp, a few standout tracks but hoping for a little more on the next one
It was ok not reallyu my style
Nick Cave always seems like such an angry guy. I can't imagine him singing a song like "Shiny Happy People" or "Perfect Day". It's just... you're not putting on Nick Cave at a party. It's not there to make you feel good. You're ready to start drinking and feeling terrible about yourself and everything. And while there is a place for that, I don't know if I was ready for 45 minutes of it.
So this is the third Nick Cave album I've got in the last little while. And while I have enjoyed his and his band's music, I'm starting to wonder what the difference is across all of his/their albums. The songs always have integrated, sprawling lyrical themes - with a bit of darkness/occult and explicit (even sexual) imagery. The compositions are also always soaring and his deep voice fills it. It's cool and unique and all. And I really like some of these albums. But do they all need to be on the 1,001 list? This is his seventh album so I'm not sure it's trailblazing. I didn't mind it and I'm certainly willing to listen to more of his stuff. But I don't know what makes it distinctive.
Nick Cave either I enjoy quite a bit, or is just alright, and this is one of the latter. There's some good tunes here, but also a good chunk of boring ones, and despite the normal length, it does drag on. Still, pretty okay, just know there's better.
3.5/5
Really good, a few of my favorite songs of his on this one.
Starts slowly and builds. I liked it.
Kinda into it... does that mean I need help?
First Listen I've heard and really enjoyed other Nick Cave albums. This one, after first listens, doesn't really seem to be as good as the others. Still, it's Nick Cave - so I have some pretty high expectations. Standouts: Straight to You, I Had a Dream Joe I'll have to keep listening to this one... 3/5
Acoustic instrumentation with theatrical vocals, definitely unique
I don't know what I expected but it wasn't sea shanties. But the shiver me timbers so all good there. it gets darker soundwise and it's full of angst which is what i imagined I would find. Pretty good album
Wow, I've never heard anything quite like this before! What a performance! Big theatricality - he's not leaving anything on the table here. That's awesome. Sometimes he sounds like he's doing some twisted, modern version of Elvis or Roy Orbison. Mostly he sounds like no one else. The songwriting is very good too. The lyrics grabbed my attention more than once. Feels like this album exists in its own strange world.
Some of me wants to like this and some of me doesn't want to. The guitar in the intro is so cool sounding. I love the concept of the outlaw acoustic guitar in all of it's cool badass glory. I just don't love his voice from first listen. I've heard of him before but never really looked into his stuff. I think this sort of sound is really cool but his voice just doesn't grab me. I was hoping that I could read a little about his past and that would help me along but it didn't. There's just something inauthentic about an Australian guy who studied art whose parents were librarians / english+math teachers singing about the American South / West. I'm not saying I have the best ear or intuition ever, but I feel like this persona is so put on. I'm trying to like it. I'm going to give it another listen in a different context.
This was decent and it had some cool songs. I wouldn’t listen to this regularly but it had some potential.
After four listens, I am convinced that I am definitively on the fence on the Bad Seeds. The arrangements are graceful and well-mannered, and Cave’s gentrified Revelations for drunkard hams occasionally prise open my old ear flaps. But I cannot truly love carnival, it seems.
Nick is always an interesting and sometimes fascinating listen. His storytelling is dark and the songs fit the mood and persona of his vampire looks. Don't know if so many of his albums deserve to be on the list, but you can do a whole lot worse.
Think this is my third (or so) Nick Cave record, and I find myself appreciating his showmanship more than the music. He knows how to carry a feeling, but none of these songs really stick with me. The storytelling, however, is great. Favorite track: "Straight To You"
This is our fourth Cave album, and I've ranged around a bit with the first 3 in terms of scoring (2 for The Boatman's Call, 3 for Murder Ballads, and 4 for Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus). I think this one is also a 3 - it sounds most like Abattoir Blues of the previous three, but doesn't have the same catchiness, lyrical interestingness, or energy. Even Straight to You (the best song on this album imo) doesn't hit the level of the top 5 tracks on Abattoir Blues.
Weird southern gothic vibe. IDK not my thing really.
Punk. Blues. Folk
When I was younger I used to really like Nick Cave for the passion and expression in his voice. Now that I'm older I find him repetitive and annoying.
first few tracks are a decent groove, namely "papa won't leave you, henry" and "straight to you" but christina the astonishing and onward feel like a severe drop-off in quality for me, lacks a lot of strength. still decent and mostly worth listening to but you can jump ship after the a-side. though the progression on "when i first came to town" is decently interesting.
I liked. I don’t fully understand Nick Cave but I’m ok with that.
Okay album, like Cave’s imagery and imagination in his songwriting, music doesn’t pull me in.
This is my third Nick Cave album from the list! It was good, but not as great as Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus.
Still like this spooky vampire man but I don't know if we need 5+ of his albums on here, and this one in particular could be dropped
Pretty cool, but voice is kind of grating. Some good lyrics though and nice instrumentation. Possible grower.
Classique NIck Cave and the bad seeds. Il ne se démarque pas des autres mais ca reste dans le style .3.5 en ecoutant je me demande si je ne devrais pas réécouté Ghosteen et revoirma note car je coirs que j'ai noté pas et ca méritait haut...
At first I kind of enjoyed this album, there's an almost wrathful energy to it, which I think makes for an album that is at the very least fairly interesting. The back half of the album mostly dragged my estimation of it down, though. "Jack the Ripper" really felt like a bad note to end the album on. On the lyrical side, this album kind of has that "men writing women" feel you would expect out of, say, an old science fiction novel. This stood out to me on a few tracks. I think that also contributes to drag this album down from around a 3 to something lower. Favorite track: "Loom of the Land"
Like how the song is but not really my favorite because. Of the album cover of how it ruins the vibe of the music but. I still like it even though it sounds weird but yeah I would recommend it to my family.
i dont like it i dont recommend
This is an okay album. It's not the kind of music I listen to but it's okay. The instruments are okay and it sounds okay so I would give this 2 stars.
Nick Cave’s voice and songs remind me of Jason Segal’s Dracula musical in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Not a compliment.
The album is alright, it's okay just playing on the side. It wasn't anything too exciting though, but it was listenable for sure.
I really just don't care about Nick Cave. I have really tried. Ever since high-school when my friend Marvin put Murder Ballads on his CD player and sincerely wanted to know what I thought I felt like I had to hide my indifference. I think there was another review of his albums on here that captured the feeling well. It just gives off this Sweeny Todd energy. I guess the lyrics are supposed to be the big selling point? He tries to shove every line he wants into the generic backing tracks without any regard to how it fits at that time.
Full skibidi.
It all sounds like one big stupid, screechy country song — completely not for me
Its aight. Nothing to write home about
Nick Cave and I just don’t see eye to eye anymore. With one exception — the mournful album Ghosteen — I have great respect for Nick Cave the artist, and for his unwavering artistic and personal integrity. Musically, however, on "Henry’s Dream" Cave remains exactly the ‘backyard Elvis’ that I’ve always perceived him to be (and I don’t mean that as a criticism). He is a storyteller who looks at the dark and dirty sides of the world, but musically, it's too much rock 'n' roll for me. There's too little pause for thought and too much prose. He's a good man. But not for me. With all due respect.
It's like if Dracula made sea shanties, but somehow even less good than that combination of words would imply.
Don't know why but I did not like this one
What’s with all the Nick Cave? I haven’t enjoyed any of it. The songs are campy and even a little sleazy. What am I missing that has “earned” this dude so many slots on the list? He’s like a Temu John Travolta.
Not for me. People love this man, but it just ain't me. Maybe a re-listen in the future.
Not shocked to see shared-producer or whatever here with Neil Young bc they both love a clunky turn of phrase and rhymey wimes
The Good: We know it’s all a dream… The Bad: They could’ve been more forthright by calling it a nightmare… The Ugly: Realizing that I have 1 more Nick Cave album to go through… Fuck me this is a chore to sit through. The positive is that it is only 40-odd minutes long, so I do applaud that. I also had to go check my history to find that I did manage to give Nick a 4* on one of his albums… but I don’t believe this one is going to be one of them. My main issue with Nick is that I can’t stand his voice… So, I can understand that there are persons out there who admire him for his poetry et al, but I just can’t handle his voice… just like other people can’t stand Tom Waits, who I adore. Anyway, I am way behind on rating albums… another 13 to go to catch up, and most of them are probably as shitty as this one… so here’s to me pulling out the straight razor and contemplating slicing open my veins… 2* for now… doubt it will go to 3*
Malo mi je unplesantly nasilan ovaj album, teško za objasniti. Vokal mi nikad nije legao i ne volim ga inače. 2/5, 3/10
Nick cave & the bad seeds implies the existence of the good seeds
A little too theatrical for my tastes. All I can think is Dracula opera from forgetting Sarah Marshall. Didn’t hurt my ears but didn’t have them perk up in pleasure either. 2.5
This feels very “try hard” to me. Like, chill out, bro. 2.5/5
Man jis iš principo nepatinka.
169. ok
Musikalt e det ganske kjedelig. Nick Cave e kult, men e det kanskje en smule oppskrytt? Tar vare på I Had A Dream og Brother My Cup Is Empty
Interesting to listen to once but will be just fine if I never do so again
Listened to 2010 remastered version. Not my type of music. Not sure why even historically it is must hear. It was fine in background.
I wanted to like this album. The reminiscence of cowboy country and Vegas rock. The story telling and guitar. Everything felt like it should be at minimum interesting. It wasn’t. I found his voice grating. It was like that guy who tries too hard at karaoke as an ironic joke and mistakes the applause for genuinely enjoying the performance. I was not a fan.
No more nick cave
He has such a interesting voice, but I did not love this album.
No lo siento un esencial y no me gusta la vibe overall 5/10
911 albums in and this is my fourth Nick Cave Album, but I have yet to see ELO. I liked one of the records by Nick Cave, but not this one.
Is this like, a soundtrack to a vampire Broadway play? Very odd. Can’t say I really got it. It did grow on me slightly as it went on. But not really something I’m gonna repeat. Was a bit of a slog to get through. 2/5.
I don't like Nick Cave or The Bad Seeds.
meh. not my favorite vocalist and very much a concept album, which is good, but not great if i dont particularly enjoy the vocals
Five Nick Cave albums?!? I must listen to FIVE Nick Cave albums before I die? No, no one does. Honestly, I think the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and maybe Stevie Wonder are the only artists that (probably) deserve to have 5 f'ing albums on this list. Hey editors, tell me this project is nothing more than a list of your favorite albums without saying it's nothing more than a list of your favorite albums. Wankers.
meh
Nice storytelling, good sound overall just not something i would listen to.
I don't think I get the Nick Cave hype (yet, perhaps). 'Straight to You' won me over by the end and 'Christina the Astonishing' was interesting
idk why I thought this would get better, 2/5. Favourite song: Straight to You
Mhhh
Disappointing, and I usually like Nick Cave.
The weird trying-too-hard-to-be-deep vocals annoy me, the instrumental parts are generic, and the production is repetitive, but I'm sure the lyrics are good and the one song in the middle about that woman that doesn't sound like any of the others isn't bad!
Honestly was having a not so great day and this made it worse lol.. Just..the singing... not good.. reminiscent of other albums Ive rated low for the same problem... Hard to try to focus on the instruments when Im listening to the vocals, but they sounded fine when I could get through.
The best Nick Cave album I’ve heard so far but that’s not saying much. Listenable.
abstain
This is listenable, but I just don't like this guy or his seeds.
Nick had a lot to get off his chest with this one huh? I could probably have done without it to be honest, it all felt very frantic and unneccesary
Nick Cave immer hopp oder top, das war eher von der schlechteren Sorte.
Nick Cave mit einem neuen Stinker
I'm sick of them. 2.
What?
Mid
It’s like if Tenacious D was bad.
Cave's vocals are strong and the music from the rest of the band is there but never quite noticeable or impressive. The lyrics prioritize story telling over musical value, but don't generate opportunity for dynamic change, leading to Cave's vocals sounding essentially the same throughout the album. Overall, I appreciated the opportunity to become familiar with Nick Cave's musical career, but don't feel that this album in particular needed to be heard.
Enough of Nick.
Like Elvis if he were bad
This album makes me wish you could give half marks. Some good, some bad. A 2 seems harsh but a 3 seems generous. I'm going for 2, purely for how shite 'I Had a Dream, Joe' is
This is the 3rd Nick Cave album I’ve heard from the list so far. I’m starting to suspect that Nick Cave isn’t for me. Too many songs on this album reminded me of an ITYSL sketch and I expected him to sing about using bones for money. This was my favorite of the 3 but still a slog.
Maso
That's a one angry guy. I mean this album seems very personal and it's probably just not for me.
I just don’t get Nick Cave, nor the love some have for him. He is so macab and depressing. I just don’t get why he would even write some of this stuff.
really prefer the sound from Abbatior more. he's a good storyteller but way too much over the top musical theatrics for me. was giving a big Meatloaf vibe. 2.5 stars
There were shades of Murder Ballads in here. Thankfully, history isn't repeating itself since there was enough there musically to avoid a 1. But, it still rhymed.
Of the (far too many, this is the 5th) Nick Cave albums on the 1001 list, this is shaping up as better than the others. Not great, the bar is low, but better...
I'm sure this is for someone, but that someone isn't me. As art, it's fine.
Coming into Henry’s Dream after only knowing “O Children” set me up for a completely different listening experience. This album felt so abrasive and confrontational, listening to the vocals I had no idea whether this was a serious album or some sort of theatrical exaggeration. This is a very rough around the edges bluesy rock album, I did get a very live band feel from it which gave it a certain layer of authenticity but also made the instruments sound cluttered at times adding to the very gritty/ominous vibe throughout. Instrumentally Henry’s dream was good, it was interesting to hear piano being used percussively, guitars were heavy and overdriven. Layering seemed very stacked, creating intensity. Vocals & Lyrics were probably the biggest sticking point for me, Caves near shouting came across as entirely satirical in a way, the lyrics are very absurd & violent adding to this macabre humour. Overall, this felt like a very dramatic performance and I find it hard to imagine listening to this album casually.
Songs I saved: Straight to you
I didn't really like the sound of this.. The first song sounded a bit like a parody of the genre 🤷
⭐️⭐️
I liked this album and especially the song I had a dream Joe
Is this a parody album?
Hot take, I hated that.
Really just don't find this guy’s dark and somber style appealing.
Nick Cave has a distinctive sound but once you've heard one track you've heard them all. Having had two Nick Cave albums I find them indistinguishable from one another despite being made years apart. Not my thing and the jesus stuff adds further to the thumbs down for me.
I had never heard of the before today and I had no idea what to expect, but I genuinely would not have guessed it would be this. This album sounds like a western at some points and like theatrical performance at others. I genuinely don’t know what this is, but I know this ain’t it and this ain’t for me.
This was not for me
Not a fan. Not for me. Sounds like how cigarettes smell, but in a sadder way. Bob Dylan after dark.
Less depressing than the last Nick Cave album I got. But still just as mid.
I feel like every Nick Cage album could be the score to a movie about a desolate man in a desolate land. It's a good, but not great movie; the kind you find playing on AMC at 2pm on a Thursday before they start their Goodfellas marathon at 5pm. I guess what I'm saying is that I think Henry's Dream is mostly forgettable, save for a few moments and songs.
would have gone triple platinum amongst cave men
2,5 - why is this man allowed to sing?
2,5. Not quite for me
the singer sounds like he used to wet the bed until he was 13
Why is he always running. Who is chasing him. Sounds like a middle aged man in a rant but I feel like if I deep his music more I could understand it more
it definitely wasn't bad, but to me it felt dull and uninteresting. i have heard of him before, never listened - probably won't again. No songs i outrightly enjoyed so i suppose its a 2 but not in critical way, just deserves nothing more. His singing in Jack the Ripper is atrocious
i feel like Nick Cave get to much credit. his best track was red right hand, everything else is just the same tired song style. It's not bad but not good, like someone you know that you didn't knew could sing in key(Not good but okey) Like 90% of this list, okey but not "Must Listen"-status
I’d hate to live in Nick Cave’s mind. Even if it’s just a schtick, he’s so far in to the savage/murder/hellscape milieux, surely his inner life is saturated in this misery to some degree. I’d say this is absolutely not my jam, but by the last few tracks, I was moderately won over.
Not for me. The vocals are a tough sell, he always sounds just a touch flat and it's driving me crazy. I enjoyed Straight to You, the rest was a pass for me.
I don’t get it.
Another Nick Cave album… I just don’t get the appeal for his music. This one was better than the others, but still not something I want to listen to. 2.5/5
Not totally sure what this is supposed to be. It's full of something for sure, but I don't get the rationale for classifying this as "must-hear" material. Pass.
I fear I did not like this very much at all. I tend to like a guy with a weird voice singing sad songs but this was not it! Rip.
Very shouty singing style. This is too melodramatic for my taste, and the singing is quite off putting
2,2/5
This would work if I was working on a major bender at a dive bar - otherwise it’s somewhat irritating..
Robert Dimery can take Morrissey and Nick Cave and fuck right off.
A little different and weird. 5/10
This is my FOURTH nick cave album. WTF, there's no way this guy is worthy of that many entries. Pick 1-2 that are best and leave it at that. It's fine. Very western.
This is the third album I've tried from Nick Cave, but I just can't get into his music. I can't even describe why that is. 4/10
I don’t know what he’s trying to accomplish with this one. It feels like vocally he’s trying to go for a tough guy vibe throughout. The instrumentals are just kind of average. Not great.
Crustina the Astonishing
interesting
I've never understood why Nick Cave is rated so highly. Although the music is OK, even good at times, I find his quirky vocal style depressing, and that puts me off.
Sometimes artists or albums are not my taste, but I can get how they'd hit for someone else. But I have no goddamn idea who this is for. It's such a *weird* mishmash of bible tent revival vibes, tinges of rockabilly, all with a melange of goth theater kid. Maybe perfect for the intro to dark television shows about early 20th century gangsters, but unclear when the hell else it would be fun to listen to this.
I think Nick Cave is one of those "you either get it or you don't" artists and his fans will consider you a cretin if you don't and if you don't get it, no amount of hectoring will get you to change your mind. No Kylie? No interest.
Not for me.
Didn’t get on with this one
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have released some great albums. For me, “Henry's Dream” is not one of them, and I'm surprised to find it on this list. There are probably several reasons for this, but in my opinion, this is the album of an artist who has not yet found his definitive identity. It's not necessarily bad, but I don't see it as playing within the given framework.
Nick Cave is for guys whose Facebook profile picture is them cradling a glass of whisky they don't like while staring pensively into the middle distance
cheguei a conclusão de que eu só gosto mesmo de 1 álbum do nick cave no geral cada vez que eu escuto um diferente vai me dando um desgosto cada vez maior dito isso, achei esse extremamente chato
I hate Nick Cave. His voice sucks and the instrumentals on this album just seemed too raw with seemingly bare minimum production; nothing seemed to mesh well. Not 1-star worthy and completely unlistenable, but still bad.
Can't stand how this guy's sings. So sick of this band.
was not a fan of the vocals, lyrics seemed a bit cheesy and over all not my thing.
It was okay, I guess. Who is the audience? 4.8M monthly listeners on Spotify is surprising to me. I’d give another album a chance, reading briefly about the band I guess they change their sound up often.
Nick Cave non mi piace. Non mi piace nè la voce nè la musica
Nick Cave blows, this blows less than he usually does.
He is such a talent but does not reach me. Prefer Tom Waits if I want to hear moany ballads.
I don't know a lot of Nick Cave and I didn't know this album. I've definitely liked other stuff more than this.
Kind of grating. Why does he insist on singing like that?
Definitivamente prefiero su trabajo en bandas sonoras por sobre su trabajo con The Bad Seeds. Curiosamente, después de este disco Apple Music tocó Carnage del disco del mismo nombre con Warren Ellis y eso sí que me gustó. PS: Igual me gustó Straight to You, pero no alcanza a salvar el disco.
Would not listen again
Not horrible but I didn’t enjoy it
I enjoyed Nicholas Cave in Con Air and Face Off but this attempt at being in a band makes me feel like he should put this particular bunny back in the box.
starts off as a 1, becomes at one point maybe a 3, ends definetly a two. Like.... I enjoy esoteric lyrics, but he just has no mouth for poetry, or no ears for it or something idk. I know I'm supposed to like this. But I honestly like Dave Mathews band more than this. IDK sorry Aussies
This is, what, 1 of 6 Nick Cave entries in this list? Cmon y’all. That said, I read through about 50 user reviews to see if I could find a way into Henry’s Dream (I like some other Cave records quite a lot) and find myself defending it for “being annoying” and so on, even if it does little for me. But that’s ultimately taking issue with a kind of default critic-speak, less concerned with the album in question.
Passable
I had a dream, Joe. I never had to listen to Nick Cave again. It was glorious.
Still don’t get it. Found this to be rather boring and self indulgent. Don’t really understand the hype. 2/5 Won’t listen again
That wasn’t as terrible as I imagined. There were some desperate moments where his vocal style was starting to chafe, but I’ll give it a mid 2 stars.
I just can’t get into concept albums sorry also he sounds like tom waits
Musically, Cave doesn't stray far from folk music as the basis of his sound on this record, even if it's filtered through second-generation sources like Dylan and the Band. As a result, there's very little that's sonically inventive here (despite the rocked-up arrangements on some of the songs). Cave's stylized, rapid-fire delivery also spits out yards of lyrics but at the expense of melody, with very little that resembles an actual vocal hook. He's got personality, but that's not enough to compensate for the lack of memorable cuts on this record.
Interesting album, didn't hate it
i just didnt enjoy this very much, overall its alright
So, it wasn't a bad record, but it's not for me, I could see a few standouts, but I'll let it for the people that is a fan of his and get it.
divorced dad energy
Is this guy a big deal in England or something? This album was a drag and I've had my fill of Nick Cave on this list.
Nope ... still don't like how Nick Cave sings.
Eeeee
NC&tBS are very polarising on here - seems to be 5 stars or 1 star, not much else in between. This album is okay. I actually like many of their songs, but this feels like they’ve thrown everything save the kitchen sink in order to be labeled avant garde. Some classic NC&tBS sound in there, but overall it was too much for me. Like Rocky Horror without the genius of Richard O’Brien
sounds like millennial folk from 1992
Someone stop this man.
This project has taken my to not knowing Nick Cave except for Peaky Blinders theme song, to hating him more than I hate Beck
Cant help but wonder why this album waa included. Murder ballads was much better. This feels like a weaker prequel concept of murder ballads
You know at the very least, I know Nick Cave has something good in him because some of the songs here are noteworthy. I just don’t find myself coming back to this, but hey, discovery is always worth my time (5/10, 2/5 on this scale)
could i write poetry to this? n maybe more than 2 but it would have to be while in the right mood
I wish I could wake up
I liked the first few songs but, tbh this is kinda of dreary!
Awkwardly, the record begins with energetic and virogous sonds and has a couple at its end. The middle is very monotonous, I found nothing worth returning to it ever on future. I'm rating this 2.5 stars because the albums on the list should be the goats.
Well, I was right! Nick Cave is going to be a controversial artist for me, because, while I liked "The Boatman's Call" a lot, this one was a chore to listen to. Just too much drama and shouting in the vocals.
These are a band which I have just never "got" at all. The drawling, theatrical style embodied by Nick Cave is just not for me, and although this is a more palatable, sanded down version of such stylings, a fresh listen hasn't really done it any favours. I remain impressed by Nick Cave's ability to craft out intriguing lyrical narratives, but I could do without the music.
Its ok. Ive never comprehended people going crazy over this guy.
Not for me.
It's really not the best Nick Cave album.
A bit of a slog, I did not finish.
2.5 It's interesting in a way that didn't really encourage you to listen again.
I can hear the beginnings of what would later become gothic rock/metal, but the lyrics and sounds didn't really stand out to me.
It was okay. The production felt cinematic, and it felt like they were going for a "movie soundtrack" kind of sound. I don't think I'll go back and listen to this one. Favourite Track(s): Loom of the Land Least Favourite Track(s): I Had a Dream, Joe, Christina the Astonishing, John Finn's Wife
Another meh from me. I could see how for the right person, repeat listening would unearth delightful details. I’m just not interested, unfortunately.
I just don't get Nick Cave...
Henry’s Dream is my second Nick Cave album from this list, and unfortunately, it didn’t do much to change my mind after sitting through Ghosteen (which earned a solid 1 star from me). That said, this one isn’t quite as painful. A few tracks had some surprisingly catchy moments that kept me from fully tuning out. It’s still not really my thing — a bit too dramatic and uneven overall — but at least parts of it had enough of a pulse to save it from a 1 star rating.
Something about Nick Cave just doesn't connect with me at all. The dramatics always feel cheesy, and this album is no different. But there are some more restrained performances that make this album more palatable for me. Still more of the same from The Bad Seeds. Top tracks: I Had A Dream, Joe; Straight to You
Tälle on termi: kitsch. Ja toinen: maneerit. "All the towers of ivory are crumbling And the swallows have sharpened their beaks" Ei saatana. Ja SILTI Cave on sen verran harjaantunut melodia- ja sointukulkujen keräilijä, että muutama biisi herättää kiinnostusta, jopa innostusta. Kakkonen.
It's my 5th Nick Cave album on this list, which is too much, and I wonder why this album is included on this list. It has its moments, but as a whole it's just poetry with monotonous music, so musically it isn't interesting and I don't like his singing style either. I'm certain he is charismatic live but it doesn't capture well on records.
Another basic Nick Cave album
2.5 - Meh
I don't think Nick Cave really does it for me... Something about his works feel cinematic, but not in a way that I particularly care for. At no point did I ever feel like this was "bad" music. But also at no point did I ever feel particularly motivated or moved by it. I think for me this is on a 2/3 boundary; leaning 2, not because it was "bad" but because I can't remember any particular point.
Mix of Danzig and Tom Waits with rockabilly sensibilities. Did not love the vocals but can see how this could be very interesting at the time of release.
OK nothing special 2.0/5
Never been a huge fan
Dios mio, por lo instrumental es un 8, por lo demás, un 2. Nota: 2.5
Not really taken by this. Not great ambient either 4/10
doesn't move the needle for me a ton, super durge-y and depressive. I do find it to be listenable and interesting within that context, but it's not my cup of tea generally
Not my jam
First time hearing this band and music. Couldn't get into it this time.
1992. The singer has a strong deep voice and they have a bluesy grit to them.
this is the reason why I hadn't listened to more Nick Cave, this album isn't anywhere near as good as the others on this list by him and this was the only previous NC album I had heard. long live the list!
Not a fan.
I don't really get the appeal. The arrangements are quite theatrical, which makes sense. The vocals are simply abysmal. Pass.
this was disappointing. i generally like Nick Cave’s stuff but i feel like there was TOO much energy in this record. his voice is unique and works best for the slower, somber songs (Loom Of The Land was my favorite from this one) and i think his yell/singing doesn’t work that well.
Nicks not the most agreeable man. His band are Even worse! I remember when he was starting out. We met him on our tour of Fiji. He was desperate for advice on a suitable band name! Len was grumpy. Dangerous combination! Len shouted something derogatory at Nick and then shouted ‘and lose those idiots. They’re all bad seeds’….the rest is history. 2.4
