Reviews (page 4 of 6)

Very poetic. Some shanty-like numbers and some powerful slower songs. I liked Brother, My Cup Is Empty

Nick Cave doesn't mess about, does he? I really wasn't in the mood for this one; it just caught me on the wrong day. I wanted to listen to it more in depth but I just didn't have the capacity. I'll come back for this one another day but from what I heard its- THREE STARS

Blind album and artist. Seen his name multiple times on the list but this was the first. Interesting style for bluesy punkish rock and it intrigued me, but this is one of those albums I an glad I tried but I dont think i will revisit. Maybe the other albums are better.

Low slung, bluesy rock. Not bad but not great.

His voice felt quite tired but I did like the story the songs had. They all felt quite poetic and just overall had a sad vibe. I think I would listen to some songs again

Really good stuff, doesn't quite jump to that next level of greatness for me though.

I know I have Nick Cave fans in my life so I will simply say that I can't think of any moment that would be made better by listening to this. If you want my real thoughts then be my coworker and let me rant at your for an entire lunch break

Mouais mouais

Not gonna be my favorite, as I'm still not the lyrics above everything guy, but an absolutely good listen. Solid 3.

Wang master

at first I didn't like Nick Cave's yelling singing, but his later songs had some cool mythical storytelling and I envisioned him as a drunk bard in a tavern.

You know, I don’t think I necessarily like Nick Cave. The melodrama, and the shouting and the broad voice are a bit much for me. But I seem to have always been in the proximity of someone who loves him for half my life so I have to tolerate him. So I listened to this and, you know, it’s fine. Whatever.

Interesting. Warrants a re listen.

Better with the second listen. Not sure about the guy's voice but the songs were good

I'll have to go back and listen to it all but I'll give it a rating based on 3 sings. I like nick cave but not familiar with this one

An enjoyable listen

Kind of an entertaining listen lyrically. But I struggle to get fully onboard. While he’s got a strong voice, he’s not a great singer. And while the stories are interesting, they are rather creepy and seedy, not really much joy to be had. And the music is a just bit meh, strays into Celt rock influences a bit too much for me. Scrapes a 3.

I actually kinda liked some of the songs on this album. Not my favorite but not bad

Dark, aggressive and orchestral music. The vocals are very prominent and are sometimes in a talk-singing style that I don't love. It reminds me a bit of Tom Waits, and I bet it would grow on me with more listens. Straight To You was the highlight from a first listen.

Oui on a compris tu fait du rock mid olala

ENCORE LUI !!! Mais j'aime bien en fait une fois qu'on s'habitue à sa voix c'est pas mal.

Not a bad album, especially "John Finn's Wife". But not my favourite dark album of those times.

nooomol eis?? papa won't leave you henry findi eig reeecht geil. biitz pirate mitgröl song aber au halt chli dark. moll cool. i had a dream joe au ziimli bangin eigentli. e huere wand vo background vocals. straight to you macht de nick cave uf nostalgie melancholie irgendwie. brother my cup is empty isch chli naja. ah du bruchsch en drink okay. nick cave isch immer chli s glich, sini text sind super. ich wird glaub au immer es 3 vergeh (weiss nöd ob das stimmt) aber jo ich ha etz glaub gnueg vo dene ghört.

tönt nach nick cave! aber auno fun wemmer ehrlich sind christina e verdienti churzi pause loom of the land sehr sön! jaa bö hett sicher au genauer chönne lose aber villes isch chli glich gsi für mich? au wenn er sis ding macht, BÖÖ knapps 3

Storytelling with interconnected tracks in folk rock. Poetic and unique at times, and I enjoyed Straight to You and Brother, My Cup Is Empty but didn't care for the rest.

An artist I really just don’t get. I’ve heard similar done better by Tom Waits. Not a bad record but one that just doesn’t float my boat

Not my favorite Nick Cave tbh.

ja, jag tycker det här är ganska bra. men jag vet inte det är något med rösten eller något som gör att det inte riktigt landar där det borde.

He has a unique voice. Reminded of the lead singer from the National. I enjoyed the album.

Ég held ég verði nú barasta að viðurkenna að ég hef lengi haldið að mér finnist Nick Cave leiðinlegur en ég hef augljóslega bara haft rangt fyrir mér. Þetta er bara mjög fínt. Mér finnst þetta ekki það besta þannig að ég set þrist á þetta en þarf greinilega að kynna mér Nick betur

Classic intensive sound that you want to sing along with.

Not my favourite Nick Cave album but still quality music.

пободрее чем обычно, но ник кейв это в целом просто не мой персонаж

this is a spooky sort of album very 80s/90s, I liked Straight to You quite a bit, catchy chorus straight to youuuuuuuuuuuu

Interesting album. The first album that caught my attention is "Christina the Astonishing"; it's mellow and melodic, but oddly it's one of the least played tracks. The album as a whole has a kind of "Americana" sound to me, which is interesting because Nick Cave is Australian.

High 3 for me. I tend to like the vibe of Nick Cave, even if I'm not super familiar with his discography. Sort of the "Goth troubadour performing murder ballads as he wanders between sketchy border towns" thing. But, none of these songs inidivually grabbed me enough to pull it into 4 range.

I once ate some bad seeds and had the shits for weeks. Had to go to hospital.

It was good, but not to my taste, I think.

First Nick Cave album, enjoyed it quite a bit, I liked half the songs

Lots of dark, moody ballads. Kind of like Rocky Horror but less fun? Overall doesn't land for me. Top song- Christina the Astonishing.

Decent, but not really my jam. 2,5/5

5/10 Still not a Nick Cave fan, despite myself. 11-11-2025

Ik krijg piratenvibes van dit album. Maar betrap mezelf er op dat Papa wont leave you henry net ff te lekker klinkt. Zou bijna zitten mee te zingen. Daarna ook I have a dream, Joe. FAVO: Papa won't leave you Henry, Brother my cup's empty,

Pretty groovy.

po achei que seria bem pior papo reto um blues punk até que bem feito. tem umas guitarrinha bem safada, a produção é bem feita. não voltaria a ouvir, mas não foi das piores experiências não pô

Weird and dark, very Nick Cave-y. I always feel like his musical core is saloon troubadour who watched too many horror movies and teleported here from an alternate version of the 1950s. Lyrics are spooky and extremely descriptive - very poetic. Musically this is actually quite tight and I think the band is awesome. He's a weirdo and it's either your thing or it's not. I think it's a bit too grandiose for me and he obviously also takes himself quite seriously despite being the love child of Bob Dylan and Sweeney Todd. It was fine? Soft 4, maybe 3.5. We will see. Neat tunes bu

Die düstere Art von Nick Cave ist Geschmackssache. Bei mir ist es von der Stimmung abhängig. Das Album ist interessant zu hören. 3/5

An alright album, I liked I Had A Dream Joe and Jack The Ripper the most.

Interesting. I liked how some of the songs felt like a ballad for the underworld. Otherwise, might not listen again.

Been pretty up and down with Nick Cave on this list, but I thought this was one of the better ones.

99/1089 The sound reminds me in a way of some local west country sailor folk, so it’s interesting to hear a similar nostalgic sound come from australia i liked Murder Ballads but i was a little concerned to see 3 more Nick Cave albums on the list but i actually preferred this one. The more upbeat folky sound works pretty well. faves: When i first came to town, Loom of the land, Papa won’t leave you Henry, I had a dream Joe 68/100

If I’m feeling happy and enjoying life, this is the perfect album to shatter my good mood and bring me back to despair. Powerful but ultimately depressing, if music is to create emotion it is very successful but not very uplifting. Perhaps cathartic would be the best way to describe it.

3/5 stars (6.5/10) Favourite song: I Had A Dream, Joe Least favourite: Jack The Ripper

Not my favorite album with NC.

I've never really gotten into the whole Nick Cave thing. I'm familiar with his most popular songs, but it has never struck a chord with me. This is a fine album nonetheless, I wished his later work maintained this "spooky-rockabilly-folk" sounds instead of piano-based songs.

Awesome

Not my bag of tea

Greip mig stundum en ég hugsa að heil plata með honum sé of mikið fyrir mig

Þetta er örugglega magnað ef maður er mikið fyrir texta. Annars er "söngurinn" leiðinlegur og þetta er ekki alveg nógu grípandi. Gott inn á milli.

ganz ok für a nick cave album

I'm never sure where I stand with Nick Cave. There have been some songs that I love but generally it's just kind of interesting. That's how I feel about this album. Interesting but didn't blow me away.

Not my favorite from these guys but not bad.

Gravelly voice a result of copious darts? Melancholic marching - add the vibraphone to the instrument list. Thought he was American - maybe I can't pick an accent at all. Is the 1975s bit based off him? Christina the Astonishing - perfect blend of warbling storytelling, the organ and ukelele. "Mainly using the body of his guitar without touching the strings" wot.

No private session used for Spotify. I don't know if I will get into Nick Cave the balladeer or the Nick Cave with the unique take on "Stagger Lee". It was a nice combination of both and quite enjoyable. I had heard the opening song and love the energy of it.

Don't imagine myself going back to this. Another review described this as the Sweeney Todd soundtrack and Warren Zevon have a baby and I can't improve upon that description.

Melancholic tunes with an epic voice.

I didn't really listen to the whole thing. But I do like what I heard. I like the goth feel to it.

I am sorry. I live in a place where "dance bands" and outdoor festival middle age folk/ rock bands are very commonplace. For the most part it simply is "not my thing." I got exactly that same vibe here. I don't know if Nick Cave evolved From or Into this type of vibe, but it is what I got from it. None of these bands or this genre of folk/ rock is bad and most is well made and clever. It just sails by me vibe wise and I sort of leave it for those with "older" brains than my own. (I am, on the other hand, quite OK with "Dad bands" which this is NOT!) Maybe the difference is that this feels like a throwback to an even earlier time or genre space. Stuff you might listen to at a county fair or a beer fest. IDK? At any rate it was a MEH for me...

Not bad. Sounds like Irish music

Good but not as good as his other stuff with the bad seeds, like the boatman's call. Feels a lot more aggressive which is fun and has its moments, but not my favorite of nick cave

Halfway point in this list, and kind of a middle of the road album. Didn't like it as much as the other Nick Cave albums I've listened to so far. It's not bad, but not really the best one I've listened either. I think he's done more interesting on other albums. Wish I had more to say about the halfway more but I don't.

Swaggering.

Alright

Can you respect an album for what it does, but dislike the music? The lyricism and the playing is great. John Finn’s Wife is a FANTASTIC song. But the rest just didn’t click with me this time. Maybe another listen will help.

Somewhere between fine and good. I like southern gothic sounds but aside from “John Finn’s Wife” and “Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry” this one was kinda forgettable, though I might like it more if I were in a different mood. 5/10, 3 stars.

Cover 6 I like what I have listened to but most seem somewhat forgettable. There are a couple of songs that I like but overall just ok. However, I am interested enough to check out more of his music.

Not Hnuk favourite work by him but reasonable nonetheless. May have just been where and how I was listening to it, or a stylistic choice but the production was very washed out with only Cave’s voice really discernible in the mix which detracted from it.

Feels like a precursor to one of my fave albums by this group the lyre of orpheus/abbatoir blues. Very grand and orchestrated. Almost a little country western too. Cool one.

really like the opening gets worse after that and stays mid

Mid, it's slightly better Scott 2 with actual instrumental back up. Favourite Song: Jack the Ripper

I think I could have gone to 4 stars. Maybe 3.5

I have never been a big Nick Cave fan and this album did nothing to change that. Christina was indeed amazing

Buena voz y estilo para cantar, pero la música media repetitiva

estamos conjurando un demonio con musica, no me lo esperaba pero me ha gustad bastante por los toques de blues oscurillo.

Not bad not amazing

This was a really solid 3.5 stars for me. I really enjoyed this - more than I thought I would - but I still wouldn’t say it would ever be a high rotation album for me or something I would really put on again. But in saying that it was a really well done album - great songs, great vocals, loved the folkiness and darkness of it.

A spooky old man singing about spooky old man things. Not bad!

Haven’t had a great string of albums lately. He’s clearly skilled and I’ve heard some good Nick Cave. But this one is so absurdly Vaudeville that it’s comical. Trying to get every “shocking” line in that he can is too much for me. Edge lordy

for sure the worst nick cave I’ve heard. his songs where he’s not on a broadway stage are incredible as usual

special place in my musical heart for Nick Cave, his heart and soul pervades thru in his music and feels like a gift for us and therapy for him, it is an emotional ride and I feel privileged to be invited on it

Interesting blend of folk/blues/country with more modern rock/punk but not really any song is a standout

I'm hot and cold on Nick Cave. I actually like this one as much as I hate some of his other stuff. 3.5.

The best album from the worst artist.

Although the lyrics are impactful and the melodies fitting, the main vocalists' voice doesn't exactly fit the tone.

Walk into a dive bar and there’s a angry but talented group of theatre kids telling stories via raw folksy songs

Yup, very fun. It feels like someone intentionally pushing my buttons, which we've all grown a shell against, more and more over time. But in '92 it was definitely fresh. Respect!

Typical Nick Cave. Not his best, but very listenable. 3/5

Nick & Co. are an incredible band but this isn’t ideal music for streaming at work. My bad. I’ll give it another listen in an old abandoned Victorian covered in creeping vines and littered with the sorrow-soaked bones of dead children.

Nick Cave is great at writing vivid lyrics buuut that's about it. I find this album to be reminiscent of walking into a Spencer's with your older cousin in 2012

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Henry's Dream: I mean its alright. I liked most of the songs, but I wouldn't say I loved any of them. Some of them were fairly boring too. Its a decent album and nothing more. 6/10

I can understand like 2 Nick Cave albums being on here. At least his stuff is interesting in all its rough theatricality. But five whole albums by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds? Come on. Robert Dimery is not big on diversity. I don't have anything to say about this album, that I haven't said about this band before. They're just doing their thing, and this is not them at their best either.

Been a while since I listened to this one. It's good, not.my favourite. Have to agree with the consensus - there are far too many Nick Cave albums on here. Every other review I'm perturbed at how lazy the bloke who wrote this book is.

Henry’s Dream is a solid album—perhaps not among the very best in the Bad Seeds’ discography, but it still contains some truly great tracks. The opening run of four songs is as strong as anything they’ve done, and closing the album with “Jack the Ripper” is a masterstroke. While the middle of the record has a bit of filler, overall it's a compelling listen—just shy of a 5/5. Personally, I prefer Murder Ballads, The Boatman’s Call, and Skeleton Tree, but writing this makes me appreciate just how incredible the Bad Seeds’ back catalogue really is. Nick Cave is one of the finest lyricists around, and the early Bad Seeds sound is phenomenal. They transition effortlessly between heavy, intense tracks and more delicate ballads, all while maintaining a distinct and cohesive style. Truly brilliant music. Favourite Songs: There are so many standouts—“Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry,” “I Had a Dream, Joe,” “Straight to You,” “Brother, My Cup Is Empty,” “John Finn’s Wife,” and “Jack the Ripper” are all excellent. You could pick any of these as a highlight. Least Favourite: “Christina the Astonishing” feels like a weak spot on an otherwise strong album. Album Artwork: One of my favourite covers—visually striking and perfectly suited to the music.

I rarely enjoy listening to Nick Cave, but I'm glad he exists and makes music. The art just explodes out of him. The first track on this album is about as punk rock as you can get with an acoustic song.

Nick es bueno

thoughts: this feels like what i’d call “sailor music.” defiant storytelling; 5/9 songs have specific names in the title, not even mentioning “brother” as a subject (or the album title!). i feel like david lynch would’ve loved this. really cool production, a couple of very solid tracks, but this album overall probably isn’t for me. songs: “straight to you”, “when i first came to town”, “loom of the land” rating: 5.9/10

perus nick cave

There wasn’t anything I particularly hated about this album. I think I enjoyed my time with it. It sounds very different than the other Nick Cave album we listened to. I think “interesting” would be a good word to use to describe what it was like to listen to this album.

6'5/10

This is my second Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album. I still don't know what to make of them. Dude has a voice like a crooner, lyrics of a madman, and the band is pretty damn good. It's wild. As before I listened to this album twice and when I was finished the second time I still couldn't figure out if I loved it or it was just so unordinary I accepted it. One day I will figure it out.

I enjoy this version of nick cave.

Not a huge fan, but not bad.

This album makes me interested in hearing more as well as finding out more about Cave. Liked the range of styles.

I keep trying to picture who is the number one Nick Cave fan and I can’t picture them. Mostly because Robert Dimery didn’t include a photo in the dust jacket of the book. Seriously, why do they have so many albums on the list? It’s all boring and depressing.

This one is not really working for me, I don’t like him in this bluesy, rocking mode.

Second album by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds... not sure how I feel about this one. It was OK. Kinda weird.

It's okay! not bad

decent

This one grew on me as it went. It is theatrical throughout, but it has range, and Nick Cave is a compelling storyteller. I may not ever listen to this again, but it was interesting for one playthrough. Standout tracks: Straight to You; Brother, My Cup Is Empty; Loom of the Land

Eh, not bad, not good.

Growltastic!

Jaa täällä on about kaikki Nick Caven levyt? Ei haittaa mua niin paljon, vaikka aika samaa kamaahan nää usein on. Tässä tykkään räkäisyydestä, ollaan jossain road side barissa. Jousisoittimet ovat klassisuudesaan vähän yllättävät täällä!

well, that was poetry to strong guitar strumming. Neat

You all seem to have a hard-on for this Nick Cave guy (or maybe just mention him a lot in other reviews). I personally have never heard of him before joining this group, so I'm intrigued to see what the fuss is all about. Papa Won't Leave You Henry gives this a theatrical start, which earns points with me. Good start. Brother My Cup Is Empty was another song I liked, however, it had the same beats and cadence as the first song. Maybe this was a creative decision to structure the story of the album? It's just weird to have 2 similar sounding songs. I gave this a few runs. Overall I think it's a solidly produced album and gives the vibe of a dark/harrowing old Western story. However, it was difficult to discern what the actual story was. Just felt like a collection of different events that happened during his "dream". This lands at somewhere around a 3.5 for me. If there were a song or two more that I gravitated towards, I could see myself coming back for more listens. I don't think that's the case with this one, so I'm leaning towards giving this a High 3.

Damn this dude loves Nick Cave. I will say the one thing I remember from most albums is the production on these. Really solid sounding. Just like every other Nick Cave album this is some solid vampire music. Unfortunately I am not a vampire but I get it.

This is cool, way more palatable than The Birthday Party, getting closer to Nick Cave clicking

Not too bad. I liked his voice.

Enjoyable. Liked the instrumental and guitar work, very interesting sounding songs. Disliked the vocalist and style of flow to the singing. Songs might have been slightly too long. Favourite Track : Papa Won't Leave You / Jack The Ripper

Man this guy gets a lot of albums on this list. It's fine, he's good, unique in a weird way. A singer songwriter off the deep end. But does he really need like 6 albums on this list?

Caves vocals are great but I just think the formless post punk shit sucks. Its not interesting and its always so slow and not much happens. Its just boring ballad after boring ballad. Im still going to give it a positive look but its not for me

Okay but I like the other album I have of his more

I am so sick of Nick. Only 3 more to go...

Gotta see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds before they kick it

I liked this better than The Boatman’s Call which is an improvement. I can’t say I liked it, but I definitely didn’t hate it. It’s a weird one.

Solid rock ‘n’ roll, but nothing memorable or worth listening to over and over again.

I didn't like this one as much as Murder Ballads or Abattoir Blues - still aiight but not as capturing for me.

★★★½

Not bad, not great.

yeah this album was a fever dream. not bad but maybe a little too experimental/adventurous for my liking. 3/5.

3 Stars (8/15)

This album was fine. Nothing special. I'm not sure why it would be on this list. Not for me.

Original and weird is almost always a good thing, and Nick Cave is no exception. Good, but not great. 3

Enjoyable but wouldn’t call it fantastic. Sea shanty vibes but Nick Cave has a stellar voice. Comes out hot but drags a bit in the middle. Fave tracks: Papa won’t leave you Henry, and John Finn’s wife

Finally some good ass fucking music! I think my appreciation for any given Nick Cave album is based entirely on how Big it is, so this is near the top.

Decent Nick Cave. It's somewhere between the wilder solo albums and No More Shall We Part. I liked it but it's fairly down my list of Nick Cave I would wanna revisit. 3/5

My first experience with Nick Cave. Weird one. I think I like Cave. I think. I need to listen to more. I’ll try some of the older albums to see if it sinks in. This album was good. Listened to the end and went back to repeat a few songs. 3⭐️

Pre-listening thoughts: yeah okay sure I liked the last one from him well enough so let’s see Post/during listening thoughts: and that was the night the skeletons came to life 6/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Straight to You, John Finn’s Wife, Jack the Ripper Least fav tracks: n/a

Very seashantish; not bad, but that is what is most memorable.

Sounds like Nick Cave. Usual poetic musings.

Weird album, I can already tell the list likes this guy. But I like this one much more than I like the other one. Weird voice, shlocky type of sound all the way through. Feels like the soundtrack for an art house film, and sorta love that. Though not sure I'd listen on an album, could see this being dope in concert.

This is probably one of my least fave Bad Seeds albums. Good but not in comparison to the others

Cave is not what i'd like to listen to, but this one is okay

Nick Cave albums two days in a row, what are the chances

Bizarre album not sure there are any bangers but was interesting to listen to.

I enjoyed this album a lot more than his other work that I have heard, probably my favorite so far. It is more relaxed and maybe a little more mainstream compared to his other maybe more recent stuff. I like the music and the vocals on this album where his vocals in other work is not my thing, maybe it's more serious or something. This is an album of his that I can actually see myself listening to again.

After I finished, I Googled, “is Nick Cave a magician.” Here is the answer, “No, the Nick Cave you're likely thinking of, the musician and frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, is not a magician, but rather an Australian musician, writer, and actor. The other Nick Cave, an American sculptor, dancer, and performance artist, is known for his "Soundsuit" creations. “ Every song started and I thought, this is going to suck. The ones that picked up were a pleasant surprise. I’m not sure if I would’ve rated it under 3 stars but he hypnotized me to round up.

This is alright, not really my thing. I was at least interested to learn how long this band has been around because I only knew of them through Peaky Blinders with Red Right Hand. I think that one song is pretty much enough of this kind of music for me.

Ehh, this one’s not for me. I enjoyed the band, but the singer kind of ruined it for me. I get this is one of those punk/folk/artsy acts that people who smoke American Spirits probably all love, but I found the up - down, sing songy voice, with surprise inflections out of nowhere to be irritating. I’d take Go Go Bordello or Angry Johnny and The Killbillies over this. 2.5 ⭐️ rounding up for the band

Can’t believe people go crazy for this guy. It’s just a bunch of rockabilly, and he doesn’t even sing, just kinda talk-shouts the lyrics. People really take this seriously?

John Finn’s wife bumped this album from a 2 to a 3. Those strings are sensational

I’m leaving this album feeling very confused. Do I like this album?? Did Nick Cave mind fuck me into liking this album?? I’m not sure so I’ll just sit here on the fence.

This was definitely not the worst m Nick Cave album. I liked parts of it enough. It was fine. I didn’t hate it.

2/9, 22%

An intersting fusion of rock ballads with shanties- had some songs that were good, but was a little monotonous in both tone and subject matter. Overall- decent album. 2.5/5

Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry // I Had a Dream, Joe // Straight to You // Loom of the Land // 3.5/5

This is the fifth Nick Cave album I have gotten. I get that people like Cave but enough is enough. I liked this album better than his other albums, but I still don't get it.

Definitely better than the one I had of theirs previous - the bright coloured one, I think it's got some flowers on it. Can't remember the name and can't be arsed to look. The first four tracks are phenomenal, but it gets a three because everything else after that is a considerable drop off, which is a shame really.

Very dramatic. Feels almost like a musical score

There are a handful of songs by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds that I like a lot, but most of it is too moody for its own good. I'm disappointed that there isn't more to value in the lyrics given that I generally like a lot of their sound.

The more Nick Cave writes like a teen who's just discovered gothic fiction, the less I like him. Not his finest work, this.

I started watching Peaky Blinders last night and noticed extensive use of Cave music in the first epi. Makes sense and this album feels like the same kind of background music. Very good for that purpose but not as distinctive as the Good Son or other Cave albums.

I liked nick caves morbid songs about death more

# Album Name: Henrys Dream # Artist: Nick Cave # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Yeah, i still dont get the hype about nick cave. Was alright. # Top Tunes: Jack the ripper # Would I listen to it again? No

Folksy. Not sure it's my kind of folk though. Almost felt inspired by old Celtic folk songs. Not anything I was super excited by.

I had never listened to nick cave before this list. I’m glad I’ve now been exposed to him but there is too much nick cave here. This was decent.

Less morose than most of his music that I’ve heard. While generally not my taste, these songs are well written and better than expected.

I enjoy the music, but his vocals are a bit too growly for my liking. Whenever it becomes closer to old-fashioned singing I really enjoy myself, but that's a bit too infrequent for me to get into this.

Quite enjoyed this, but I’m not sure what it adds that the other two Nick Cave albums I’ve already listened to from this list didn’t provide. Fingers crossed there isn’t a 4th!

Nick Cave is an interesting one. Knew a few songs prior to this process, but not many have come up so far. And what has come up hasn’t quite grabbed me. This is probably the best yet though. Simpsons: No

That's enough of your music, Nick.

This was another one where lyrically it was pretty boring. There were some really interesting instrumental phrases though. His singing style and voice seemed to work best in songs like Loom of the Land.

A really strange album. It was pretty abrasive and odd, discordant and overwhelming. Some songs really drag and I wouldn't want to listen to this all the time, but I still found it somewhat engaging and liked some moments. I could revisit this if I was in the right mood for something strange - but I probably won't. 3

Would not listen again, but rounding up to three; objectively I’m interested, subjectively I don’t like it; his voice doesn’t always work for me again. Favorites: straight to you, brother my cup is empty, when i first came to town.

Perfectly fine enjoyable music, but I can’t imagine this being that influential tbh.

The first song or two felt like this was going to be Nick Cave sings sea shanties, which I'm disappointed to say was not the case.

The older he gets the better his music sounds, probably going to actually like the next album chronologically, this one was just ok for me.

Très bon disque, mais pas mon préféré de Nick Cave. Il est peu trop sûr le 320 tout du long.

feels generic but I don't know what to compare it to. wouldn't buy the album but wouldn't be mad if I found it cheap at an op shop or something

I was pleasantly surprised by the last NC&TBS album I got; it was less depressing and dark and more interesting than I was expecting. This feels like a bit of a recalibration. I didn’t enjoy it much. It’s chaotic and a bit overly dramatic. I think Nick Cave has a great voice but it’s much more effective, in my opinion, when deployed in a more stripped-back and intimate manner.

Goeie muziek, ik vind Nick’s manier van zingen gewoon niet geweldig

I always had a hard time getting into Nick Cave up until he released 2019’s Ghosteen, which I love. Going back to Henry’s Dream with that newly developed appreciation for Nick helped me connect to it a little more. That being said, pre Ghosteen Nick Cave still doesn’t hit me. The band sounds good though and I enjoyed exploring this album enough to not skip around.

I just can't get into Nick Cave, or Leonard Cohen, or Lou Reed. I've tried. At this point, I think the problem is me, not them. Or, maybe it's their vocals. Yeah, that's it. It's them, not me. My musical taste is perfect and better than everyone else's. I'm sure that's it.... I did like the song Christina and the Astonishing. That was cool. I'll give this album a 3.

Will appeal to theater kids, especially if they're also into stuff like taxidermy and carnival freak shows and true crime. Wordy narrative melodrama delivered in a baritone both growly and crooning, with lush, emotive musical backing. It's not exactly my thing, but it isn't bad. 3.5

2.5 rounded up, pretty meh

Can’t really think of anyone that I listen to that this sounds like, but an interesting blend of sounds/lyrics. I don’t know that I will ever listen to it again, but happy to diversify.

Different seed for sure

Immediately recognizable to the point I have started comparing similar bands to the Nick Cage. This album didn’t really do it for me. A bit too dark, edgy and angry. My favorite is still the double album. 5/10

liked the opening track, the rest of the album was pleasant too not sure if I would actively listen to again 6/10 or perhaps 5

The concept is pretty cool but his voice is honestly kind of annoying. The lyrics are very surrealist and set up a whimsical adventure, but the resulting sound does not really please my ears.

Fine. First half is better.

Solid 3.5

Apropos of the Byrds and Neil Young supposedly being overrepresented on this list I submit Nick Cave as an entrant. Henry's Dream is sonically Nick Cave but no different than his other albums. It's no concept album like the one dedicated to his so so why does this album belong on this list? I'm not hearing anything particularly gripping. 3/5

Okay, I'm pretty sure that there's more Nick Cave albums on this list than Radiohead albums. While the construction of such a list is a matter of opinion, and all earnest assertions are valid, this is also objectively wrong because of my feelings. So anyway, like all of the other Nick Cave albums, this one is fine, but I'm not coming back to it 3/5

Un autre album de qui a son propre son tout en gardant toujours les mêmes éléments qui font Nick Cave. Je pense que c'est l'un de ceux que j'ai le plus aimé. 7/10

Not familiar but an interesting style.

Decent but I think there might be too many Nick Cave albums on this list. Have to be in the right mood to listen to him.

I'm sleepy af and found this music great for spacing out and being surprised by sudden time leaps

Kings of the murder ballad here, with songs darker than dark energy, dark matter and Vantablack (that's very dark indeed) put together. If you're feeling in a mood, this won't help at all.

Seems like a lot of people love this guy. I say he's significantly behind Frank Zappa, but ahead of Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart.

Henry’s Dream had its moments, I preferred the energetic tracks where Cave really let loose. Brother, My Cup Is Empty was great, definitely the standout song. I’ve never been fully able to get into Nick Cave, this was a good enough album but aside from a few tracks it’s not doing enough to bring me back. 3 stars

This feels like a weird one to rate. I did not have the best first impressions going in, especially with how much of a wanker Nick Cave comes off as. His singing voice is definitely a bit different but works for the songs and the overall tone of the band. I would say that is my biggest point of praise in general, the instrumentation is pretty good throughout but I was impressed with how they maintained a very strong atmosphere throughout the entire album. With all that being said though, I did find the tone and lyrics to be a bit much. They REALLY want to be edgy and out there in a way that started to get old towards the end of the album. I would say Jack The Ripper (also my least favourite song on the album) was the one that really took me out of it. Possibly an odd complaint, but I also thought they leave very little room for the instrumentals to breathe through. About 85% of the runtime I think that Nicks voice is booming over the rest of the song. Obviously the lyricism of these songs is a highlight to a lot of reviewers but I would have appreciated giving some moments for the rest of the band to come through. So yeah, a pretty competent album that I was initially ready to dislike but found myself appreciating some of its craft. Not sure if it is something I'll be returning to anytime soon but I wouldn't say it was a bad time by any means.

Nick Cave is a real odd looking bloke. The prototype Australian goth who I’m astounded has not played Frankenstein monster or some other sort of baghoul before. I really enjoyed the opening track but my interest tapered off as the album progressed. Not for me but nonetheless competent music.

Too many religious illusions to work through, like his voice thou

Country/folk lyricism meets punk passion meets a musical's sense of storytelling. This album is certainly different and intriguing at times, but I'm not sure how many more times I will listen to it. Highlights: "Papa Won't Leave You, Henry" (something about the subject matter and gravitas gives me Johnny Cash vibes. It does the opening track's job of setting the tone for the album.), "Straight to You" (jangly, Smiths-like song)

Not really my thing, but ok in its way

Thought that this album was pretty good. Not a massive Nick Cave fan but enjoyed the listen

This album has its moments. "Papa Won't Leave You, Henry" and "Brother, My Cup is Empty" stand out, with the latter sounding like a demonically possessed Elvis. But as with much of Nick Cave's work, I struggle to get through an entire album.

Cave's lyrics can really paint a picture, there's no denying that. But it's just hard to listen to a whole album of it. Great lyrics that become a little much all at once.

It's a good story of an album. I respect it. Nick Cave has a perfect voice for this kind of performances. 3.5/5.

Deserves another listen. Feels more accessible than the Murder Ballads

I dont know why this man has so many albums on this list. It al sounds the same. Tales about death and misery

I like the gothic vibes of this but was surprisingly a little cold on this.. not actually very familiar with Cave’s style though so I’d like to dive into his stuff more

The best Bad Seeds era but not my fav from this period.

Hyvä kokonaisuus ja taattua Cavea. Ei kuitenkaan oma suosikkini ja siksi vaan kolmonen 3/5

Tuttua synkistelyä Nickiltä. Ei ihan tarttunut aiempien albumien tavalla. 3/5

Too much Nick Cave in my life recently, but I maintain that he’s a good musician. I just don’t really like him.

Started strong, kind of fell off. A bit too slow towards the end for my tastes. Mix was badass. Whole albums sounds raw. Favorite Track: Papa Won't Leave You, Henry Least Favorite: Jack the Ripper

All a bit strange and conceptual so I’m not sure at all what to think of it. Eye opening. I like it to be fair, not sure if I’ll come back to it but it is pretty cool. 3.5 stars.

Interesting listen. Definitely influenced Tenacious D, but I'm really even a fan of Tenacious D. Also, the vocals sound like he's trying to hard to be something he's not. Overall, didn't hate it, but not likely to ever return to this album.

Soft rock. First part of the album didn’t catch my interest a lot, but second half did. He has a great vocal and band!

Overall, I like the band and I like the album. They're always gritty and dark, and sometimes that's too much. This one skirts the boundary ok. Some memorable songs in here (Papa Won't Leave You, Straight To You). Reminds me pretty strongly of Nick Cave's Grinderman side project. 3/5

The third record from Nick Cave to pop up for me on this list. I was never super familiar with him, and this one falls a bit flat compared to the Ghosteen and Murder Ballads. Much more succinct, but didn't leave as much of an impression on me. Still a good album regardless.

Hear me out here. This album would’ve got four stars for the sheer fact that it’s Nick Cave but this isn’t his best album and I feel more of his better ones will come up later.

Again, rather underwhelming for me. Nick Cave has generally been one of those artists where they have two or three great songs, but the rest just fall flat.

Not bad. But not something I’d just put on

This music sounds dark and serious and edgy while also sounding generic. I think this misses a big part of what makes metal and grunge good. Honestly, if it weren't for the Sex Pistols, I think that this is what green day would sound like. There's something about the high fidelity and clarity of this music that just makes it feel overprocessed and inorganic. I really didn't have a problem with it but it doesn't stir up anything under the surface. Hard to rate.

This is the 2nd or 3rd Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds record I've gotten, and I'm still unsure how I feel about him (them). It's easy-listening rock, but his voice just feels like a mismatch to the tune of the music. I can understand the allure, and I don't dislike it, but it's not something I think of that I'd want to listen to on a regular basis.

I do like Nick Cave but maybe not in this dose. 2.5ish

Gothic Americana Tom Waits.

Nick Cave album 41 ofzo. Vind het wel oké maar is nu wel genoeg

That was a lot of Nick Cave. They all blend in. It's my second from here and it's about the same as the first. I guess they all do indeed sound like Nick Cave. From this album, I have one track saved, a faint sense of having been soul abraded, with moods and scenes from a life I'll never live. Interesting, I'll say interesting but not with any passion. I gotta dig into the lyrics a lot more to connect more, and I don't know if I want to do that. When? Let's say that it's at a special time of a life when the rain is settled in, the fire is low, there is whiskey on hand and you just want to pour yourself a nice mood of melancholy and insight into the whole bitter mess that is being a human being. That's the scene I see this album fitting best. 3 stars.

I get it, he's different. But he does not warrant the number of albums he has on this list, many songs feel like they were written, recorded, produced with little love and I get the feeling of records being churned out with this guy. It's the little details that make a song and there are no little details.

Classic Cave but not exciting

En mi opinión no es el mejor album de Nick cave. Un poco duro de oir.

this album is astonishing

Having experienced 0 Nick Cave prior, I went into this with 0 expectations. But I was pleasantly surprised with an almost story-like album, a fun listen, good voice and good instrumentals. 3.4/5 -> 3/5

Not Nick Caves best album, but still more than worthy of this list.

I dig it. I listened to the remaster and the production was a little slick, but I think it can still ring true that there's powerful delivery on here.

I think this was the first time actually listening to Nick Cave. Interesting deep voice.

You have to be into lyrics to like Nick Cave. I’m into lyrics and I love Nick cave but I do think this album is patchy, as many of his are.

A little context to my state of listening —!Lowk didn’t sleep well last night bc I was so stressed I thought I was gonna shit myself and I listened to this in the morning and was still eepy and I didn’t wanna go to work bc my coworker drives me absolutely off the walls bonkers mad not happy so I wasn’t fully engaged w/ the album and it also was not the vibe I needed. Not terrible but don’t see myself putting this on.

Kinda made me feel like a pirate. Not really sure if I like it or not

01) Papa Won't Leave You, Henry - 7,0 02) I Had a Dream, Joe - 7,5 03) Straight to You - 8,0 04) Brother, My Cup Is Empty - 7,5 05) Christina the Astonishing - 7,0 06) When I First Came to Town - 7,0 07) John Finn's Wife - 7,5 08) Loom of the Land - 7,0 09) Jack the Ripper - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,33 (73/100) Current ranking: 140/250 Another Nick Cave album. This one got a slightly lower rating than the previous one, I don't know the songs on it. The only one that sounds familiar is "Straight To You", which is also the best on the album for me.

I feell that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds offer little more than violence and misery porn disguised as wisdom. Musically they are fine, but nothing special. Their pretention is hollow and their weight unearned.

This was really interesting. It was more storytelling than anything, but his voice was perfect for it. Not something that particularly grabbed me, but very good to have found

Nick Cave was at one of his artistic peaks in the ‘90s, leaving “Henry’s Dream” as sort of an outlier. His preceding album, “The Good Son,” and the one that followed this, “Let Love In,” showed two varied styles for Nick that this album seemed to have gotten caught in an awkward middle of. This album had SOME of the emotional intamcy that made “The Good Son” one of the greatest albums ever made and SOME of the creative noisy experiments that characterized a large part of “Let Love In,” but it didn’t do either of those styles as well as any other album Nick made in that decade. Now, comparison is a dumb criticism, I just genuinely think Nick’s better material was saved for his other albums around this period. With all that being said, this is still a pretty decent album. I thoroughly enjoy the first four songs, but after that, the record begins to fall off a bit for me. “Christina the Astonishing” has an intriguing stripped back sound, making it a song I enjoy in the context of the album, but its meandering length and lack of truly standout characteristics make it largely forgettable le in the grand scheme of Nick’s discography. A similar situation goes for the next track, “When I First Came to Town,” except I don’t really like it all that much except for a notably pretty string arrangement. Finally, the record closes in a fairly underwhelming manner. No matter how many times I listen to the album, I cannot seem to remember how "John Finn's Wife" sounds, and the following track, "Loom of the Land," is merely memorable for being boring. The last song on here, the brief-ish "Jack the Ripper," is a noise-punk track along the lines of what Nick was doing early in his career, as well as pretty frequently on subsequent releases in the ‘90s. However, while it’s not a bad song (there isn’t a bad song on here, and very rarely is there one if it bares Nick Cave’s name), it just doesn’t do anything interesting with the sound it went for. All in all, this is a mixed bag of an album. It starts strong but does the worst thing an artwork can do, and that’s decrease in quality as it goes on. At the end of the day, though, this is Nick Cave we’re talking about, and even one of his more subpar albums is still a pretty decent project.

I just can’t get down with Nick Cave. The band is good and the music is very serviceable, but I don’t like his pitchy vocals and the delivery feels more edgelord than punk. Leonard Cohen x Iggy Pop x Tom Waits but the result is mostly lackluster. There are no major faults, but it doesn’t connect with me. 3.3

More Nick Cave. Who would have thunk it?

Too much Nick. Get the Gen X crew off the 1001 selection panel.

A strange mix of Irish folk, country, rock and goth. Not for me but an interesting enough listen

I have mad respect for Nick Cave as an artist. He has had an incredible career. His songwriting is both unique and articulate. He brings a menacing dark vibe to every project that is inimitable. This album is pretty average. Honestly probably doesn't belong on the list. 6/10 sad on a few too many levels.

Maybe my best NC experience yet...maybe was just in the right mood. 3/5

I've always been more of a greatest hits fan when it comes to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I love Nick's voice - so sad and sexy and mysterious and dark, the lyrics to lots of their songs are pretty dark too! This album was pretty good but all the songs sounded pretty similar on the first listen - after a few more listens I enjoyed it more. It was just a really nice change from the never ending 60/70s rock. Fave track: Loom of the land

Top cool

Good 90's alternative rock. -Straight to You Brother, My Cup is Empty

Reminded me a little of Let England Shake, just not quite as good. 2.85.

its fine

Nick Cave is always a slog to get through. If nothing else, he is at least intense and you can't accuse him (or the Bad Seeds) of writing flippant empty songs. Some good tracks here.

"Henry's Dream" is the seventh album by Australian rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I like the Wiki genre description of punk blues. I'll go with that. It was the first album with now long-time members Martyn P. Casey (bass) and Conway Savage (piano, organ, backing vocals). Others members of the Bad Seeds included Cave (vocals, piano, organ, harmonica), Mick Harvey (rhythm guitar, piano, vibraphone, organ, drums, backing vocals), Blixa Bargeld (guitar, backing vocals) and Thomas Wyder (drums, backing vocals). The album was produced by David Briggs; the band was very unhappy with Briggs which led to Cave and Harvey remixing the album. Cave said the album was influenced by his experience with Brazilian street beggars. Commercially, the album reached #29 in the UK and had generally favorable reviews. An acoustic guitar opens "Pap Won't Leave You Henry." The band kicks in with a dark and heavy bass and drums. Strings are added. A chanting chorus. Cave describes the sights and people on the streets. The band goes rockabilly in "I Had a Dream, Joe" with the piano and drums rolling. A searing guitar. The first single "Straight to You" is slower with an organ, piano and melodic guitar. It's about a dying relationship and a good song. A droning organ and slower drumbeat carry "Christina the Astonishing." The harrowing story of a Christian saint. Things don't really lighten up and climax on the closer "Jack the Ripper." Pounding drums and bass. A tale of a toxic relationship as every time the protagonist kisses her she screams Jack the Ripper. Cave in full frightening mode. Compelling and dramatic are good descriptors of this album. The music is built around the lyrics of the down and out, failing relationships and tales of despair. I think that is just about every Cave album I've heard, maybe this one moreso than others. This is a good album as is every Cave solo or with the Bad Seeds album that I've cone across. If you're in an angry mood, this album may fit the bill for you.

I like NC a LOT, but this album feels repetitive with more shouting than necessary. Gonna only give him 3 stars.

this is a much better pick for The Bad Seeds. straight up murder ballads wall to wall. love it.

Not bad Nick, it bad. Heard of him before and for some reason I always thought he was a pop artist (maybe Nick Carter mix-up?). This album was not pop and I'm glad. Some good story telling. Brother, My Cup Is Empty was best song and I could feel his pain. Not sure the genre here...folk-rock? Down for more from them whatever it is...2.85.

I always hear about Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds as a modern rock act that is slept on. I'll admit I don't think I've ever heard a song by them before. They definitely bring a distinct sound. It's fun and raucous with some ridiculous vocals that kinda add to the whole thing. I can see why people have mentioned them to me previously. I'm curious to check out more of their work to see if I like it. As for Henry's Dream it was a solid listen and I'm glad for the exposure. 2.85

Kevyen viihdyttävä ja olisin halunnut kuunnella vielä toisena päivänä uudelleen ennen arviointia, mutta nyt ei aika riitä. Niko Luola pahoine siemenineen vaatisi enemmän paneutumista.

Hyvänolonen levy. Olis tehnyt mieli kuunnella lyriikoita lukien, mut ei ollu aikaa… ehkä joku päivä

Nick has a unique sound and I've loved some of the stuff I've heard on soundtracks, but I think that's key - small doses. Unique as his sound is, a lot of this sounds vaguely the same. There isn't a track on here that I want to hear again.

Good but I think I could have gone without listening to it before I died

I like nick cave and the bad seeds but this is not their best work and im not sure why it’s on this list

Nick cave is Halloween music without the songs having anything to do with Halloween. His voice and the music are just haunting. It’s pretty good too!

It's atmospheric but not really my cup of tea.

This is unfortunately the 5th Nick Cave album we've seen on this list, and it is again, nothing special. Nick Cave has his vibe, and though he might branch out and do something different to warrant attention, it doesn't make him an artist worthy of 5 selections on this list. My take is he barely warrants 2. For this album, its fine... Brother My Cup and Loom of the Land are my favorites, though they are just more listenable than the rest, not that they are great catchy tunes.

This was exactly what you think a Nick Cave LP will be. I have always liked his work.

Not to be confused with Henri's dream (where a chicken asks you to stop eating meat)

Need to relisten but was a very fun album. Like his voice a lot

I think I’ve listened to his biggest album, but I’m mostly unfamiliar. Track 1 rules, it’s kinda unsettling and driving and really good. Second song is more of the same, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. 3rd is a little slower which is needed. This album is fine.

Never got into Nick Cave much but I feel like I could become a big fan of I really dedicated myself to it.

Still the alure of this guy alludes me. Don't get it. Nope. Nada. Dour songs that usually mention pain, whisky, death, despair etc.
