Reviews (page 6 of 6)

This album was just ok for me. The songs and instrumentation was fine, but there's something about his voice that I don't really like but I can't really put my finger on what it is. I was glad when it ended. I wouldn't listen to this again.

You get two stars instead of 1 because I made it to the end of this album

The last three songs are worth the price of admission.

Never listened to him. Not bad a little melodramatic

Interesting, not bad, but not for me.

Boring, high 2

I wish that great voice could hit the right notes more often.

This was fine, they definitely have their own sound, but by the second half I felt like I heard a lot of this already. Nick Cave is a talented vocalist but he's just never done it for me. I've known so many people that swear by him/them, and there's a few tracks I like more than other stuff I've heard, but nothing really grabbed me.

I don't really get it. Wikipedia calls it punk blues, which I should like....but it's just not hitting. 2.5 - rounding down because I really have no desire to run this one back.

Doesn't do it for me. 2.3/5

Meh. 2/5. I don't think this is his best.

He's here again... great.

"I thought it was INTERESTING" - Tim Robinson A bunch of songs like...telling stories is an interesting concept and sometimes it works but a LOT of times it does not. Which is a shame, because the beginning starts off soooo good. Sometimes the songs just drag and his voice is a little difficult to get into at times. The songs kinda start to sound similar too... Liked Songs: "Papa Won't Leave You, Henry" , "Straight to You" , "When I First Came to Town" , "John Finn's Wife" , "Jack the Ripper"

liked songs: I don't think Nick Cave can sing in tune. The music itself is interesting, sort of like a western/rock soundtrack. Not my favorite album, but it's not bad. 2.5

I feel like we have had him before and that was enough (side point...i would argue more that one album from any band is too much, we get there voice and influence in one album). I don't get his appeal, he is obsessed with death... He is goth and trying to be shocking and against the grain. This one was more palatable then the last but still just grating. It almost feels like he is trying to hard and turning it into satire, which would make it better, but it's not... It feels like a waste of time and space on the list where I could discover someone else worthwhile

Enough of this guy already. What is it with PJ Harvey, Bjork and Nick Cave that these guys can't get enough of? This is fine. Has Pouges vibes but is not as good.

Well now I've listened to this I've only got 2 more Nick Cave albums on this list to listen to so that's something I guess? How the hell does this guy appear 6 times on this list? It's not bad, but like, what the hell am I missing with this geezer? Each additional album has added absolutely nothing and is just more of the same apart from Junkyard, which was absolute dogshit.

I was very excited when I saw this album pop up as I love Nick Cave, but this album disappointed. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but it just doesn’t work for me. 2

He sounds like he’s singing a different song than the band is playing

Diappsointing. Not as melodic and musical.

Meh, I found his shtick a bit annoying on this one

Не мое

First song was pretty good, the rest is just melodramatic and unnecessary.

I just don't see what anyone likes about this atonal rambling excuse for songwriting.

It's a slog! Out-of-tune singing, pretentious lyrics, uninteresting melodies.

This album is a bit much. So far I've rated Nick Cave 4, 4, 2, 4. Henry's Dream very much could be left off this list, and probably at least two of the others, even the ones that I liked.

Cool Americans type backing music, but I just could not get into the signing.

All very sad and all a bit same-y. Nic Cave is a legend but I did not get into this one.

Fav song: When I First Came To Town It's a little bit too 'broadway' for me I think. Really not a huge fan of the lyrics either, just a touch too musical theatre for me to take any of it as seriously as the music seems to take itself. Some great instrumentals though - Nick Cave has definitely got a great band.

really weird vibes i don’t necessarily hate it but i don’t think i’d ever listen to this again.

Y’know when you have to get a night bus and the mental case who’s drinking White Lightning moseys over to you and starts telling you his life story? And at first you’re annoyed about it but then, as more and more people pile onto the bus, you start to realise that this singular nutter is actually saving you from having to talk to lots of other blander alcoholics. Then by the time it’s your stop you’re going “You’re right, Barney, they were arseholes for sacking you from that school janitor’s job just for tell that one 9 year old to go fuck himself! I’ve met 9 year olds! He probably deserved it!” Then you leave the bus, shake it off and get back to the business of being yourself. That’s this album.

Nick Cave is so all-over the place that it makes sense that he might have multiple albums on the list, but this one? I don’t get the acclaim. It’s good and it’s Nick Cave, so that makes it better than most, but it doesn’t make me feel anything more than mildly unsettled and that’s a straight up failure if you’re a Bad Seed.

Didn't like this at all.

mediocre background music

Not my scene but musically very good

I need a stiff drink after all that drama

I like what he's trying to do but not how he's doing it. I just can't stand his horribly out of tune voice. I had less patience for this than I did Murder Ballads.

Could never get around these guys, no matter which album I try they have some undeniable hits but it always just ends up being eh as a whole 5/10 Fav tracks- Papa won't leave you, Henry Least fav - ehhhhhhhggg

Nick Cave has two good songs, and neither of them are on this album. Only a single listen for this one, and it was an absolute slog. Some songs were half-way tolerable like Straight to You. When I First Came to Town is great because the harmonica signals that the song is over and it's got good harmonica a la Neil Young not BAD harmonica like Bob Dylan. That's followed by John Finn's Wife, more rambly shitty lyrics with good production value at a duration that is long enough to be considered legitimate torture much like the next (AND THANKFULLY LAST) two songs on this album. Loom of the Land is probably the best song on this album especially because it's juxtaposed by Jack the Ripper which is a fuckin stinker. The musical assembly here just doesn't click for me. Cave's vocals are grating, the lyrics are rambly and it helps to just tune it out and honestly this bloke's whole spooky edgy aesthetic just rubs me the wrong way. When people say they are Nick Cave fans I am convinced they have only listened to either Into My Arms or Do You Love Me? and then decided "yeah the vibe is good". The only other explanation is that you barrack for him cause you are Australian. And for the latter reason I am giving it a 2/5 instead of the 1 is deserves. How I felt for the majority of this album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQjj1uPL1Ds

Why is Nick Cave so melodramatic? I don't care for his vocals. If the vocals are not there then I can't look past the alleged greatness of this album. 3/10.

This wasn't my favourite Nick Cave album I have to say. I thought I finally got onto a song I liked more and then realised the album had finished and it was a song from another album. Slightly garish songs on here that I found grating. Sorry NC I totally love other albums!

Thought this was an easy hate but I liked Straight to You. The rest is kinda weird Hadestown energy.

Good lyrics, overly dramatic vocals.

Wasn't my thing. I don't think I've liked any of his stuff as much as I like Red Right Hand.

Cave just doesn't do it for me. I have had many albums of his from this list and all have just fell flat.

Henry's Dream is the seventh album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, originally released in April 1992. Man, I just do not get Nick Cave. I respect him as an artist, and he is quite a good songwriter. He is pretty good at storytelling in his songs. I can't get into his voice for the most part and a lot of his song composition decisions are just odd. This album is apparently a lesser known one in his discography so I'm glad I listened to it anyway.

There sure is a lot of Nick Cave on this list. Looks like I’ve got mixed feelings, but this one didn’t really grab me. Too aggressive and shouty. He’s an odd one, I guess.

OK. We get it. You love Nick Cave. It's more accessible than the million or so others on the list. But I still find his vibe creepy and off putting.

Pretentious Punk Blues.

Nice voice but I won't listen to that album again, I didn't find it interesting

Not a Nick Cave fan…

Struggled to make it through this one i did not enjoy myself

As with other Nick Cave albums, I find it to be a bit brooding. This one less over the top in that sense at least. 2.5

I feel a bit bad, because I’m reviewing this from Nick Cave’s hometown, but I was just a bit bored by this one. The songs all felt very same-y. Nothing really stood out. I might have to listen again and pay a bit more attention (I listened while in a cafe having lunch), but I don’t see my opinion changing too much.

I dont like Nick Cave and you cant convince me otherwise, at least not yet. rough listen, is too loud a good criticism? because I had to keep adjusting the volume out of annoyance.

I did not enjoy this album. I just don’t think Nick Cave is for me

I'm not really getting it

Thankfully it is short. I'm definitely not in the mood for this today.

the 3rd song is alright… but just about. some of these songs sound like they’re made to be in a soundtrack. i don’t absolutely hate it, but i don’t really care for this so far. which is odd cause i have some nick cave songs saved in different playlists that i really like… maybe his music needs to be cherrypicked lol. i like this vocalising on the 5th song though

Listened to this at very low volume at work. Best way to appreciate this artist.

just not my vibe

Bit of a weird one. Straight to You is the best by far and some of the rest was bad. Not awful, but I don't want to listen to more of this.

Not sure what to make of this artist. Never heard a voice like his, but I also find his music very strange.

Another artist I've heard people gush over for years. I don't really get the hype. It's not awful, but just seems so... theatrical, for lack of a better term. Music is well performed, but lacks any elements that really thrilled me, and often borders on boring. Vocals are just too campy and over the top. Big turn off.

3/10 - This was not a good album to say the least. I liked one song, Straight to You, the other songs I really did not enjoy. His voice was annoying the beat was bad. It was just a mix of bad. Straight to You saved it a little bit

Interesting, not sure if its really my thing though

This must be the third or fourth of his album in the list and it still doesn't grab me. At least I can now say after a significant amount of research, consideration and soul searching, I am categorically not a Nick Cave fan.

Did you know that death?

A couple of decent tracks but not really my style.

"Papa Won't Leave You, Henry" and "Brother, My Cup Is Empty" are o.k. But the whole album don´t catches me at all.

Seemingly sea shanties

Bad Aussie rock. Not sure how this made the list

The fact that we listened to an album of Nick Cave's and it didn't even include their only really good song is absurd...(Red Right Hand).....SMFH

Dramatic vocals in a way I do not like.

Might be the worst album cover I've seen. I like the instrumentation, his voice is too hammy. It distracted me from any real emotion that could be there. He might look too much like a magician not to be doing magic. I could find a way to like this more, but I'd need to be drunk and 20 years younger.

Another album by Nick Cave. Is this bandso groundbreaking that another of theirs is on this list within a week. It's okay at best

Too dark for my taste, too much drama and pain. Besides that, the music isn't my thing, maybe occasionally, but I'm not up to listening to a whole album.

I loved the warmth and sentimentality of The Boatman's Call which I was graced with a few months ago but I had quite the opposite feeling while listening to Henry's Dream. I particularly disliked the overall ambience and production. It sounded distant and piercing. Interestingly, reading the Wiki after writing my previous paragraph, Cave himself also wasn't a fan of the production. This led to the recording of Live Seeds, with the intention of doing justice to his songs. I went on to listen to Live Seeds and those recordings felt more dynamic and well-produced. But a disappointing ★★ for Henry's Dream.

A few okay-ish songs, but the usual evil-deeds sound from Nick hasn't so far been my style. Not bad for sure, but just not really for me. 4/10

I’m reading Nick Cave wasn’t a fan of the production on this one and I agree with him.

I don't care for this

I'm really stuck between giving this a two or a three. Like, I dont see myself listening to it ever again, and nothing stood out as an excellent track. 2.4/5

Dramatic blues… I really don’t get the hype around this guy. Didn’t like his voice at all, and the rhyming patterns were quite monotonous

Henry had a bad dream. Angry ballads are the theme, John Finn’s Wife being the best of ‘em. Please let me know why this album made the 1001 list, liked it enough to rate it at (2.3*s)

There are constant references made to Nick Cave in the music world but I don't get what all the buzz is about. Maybe his other work is better but this album is not fantastic and I couldn't really get into it. It has good elements: folk-rock-country vibes, paints a visual picture, and great guitar strumming. But too much of it felt theatrical and overblown, like dark Broadway (listen to him pronounce "viper" and cringe). I could see something like this growing on you over time but I don't think I have the time. I don't like this one too much but I'm willing to give his other stuff a shot.

I don’t know why exactly, but I find Nick Cave’s music to be kind of empty and pointless

Was a bit disappointed by this. Didn't grab me at all. Sorry Nick, the boatman's call was much better for me 2

Initially, it sounds like... johnny? Just initially. Although this seems like this album is fairly cohesive. However, given my criteria of whether I'd listen to it again?

I feel like this sounded like a Quentin Tarantino film from the 90s as an album.

I just don’t get the appeal.

Love Nick Cave. Don’t love this album. (Maybe if it were Henri’s Dream).

Yeah idk, could only get through about half of this before it lost me.

I miss The Birthday Party, and from the sound of this, so does Nick. I hear what he is trying to do, but it doesn't always seem to work, and this didn't work for me. An updated version of Big Bad John with darker lyrics. There are a few good lines in there, but the music is pretty straightahead. Once Johnny Cash did his American Recording series, this sort of thing lost its shine for me.

Old Nick loves a rant. He also rambles an awful lot on this album. It's more of an ode to BOOZE than a musical body of work. I had a hangover after the first three tracks. I prefer it when Cave is more introspective and questioning.

What the hell is this?

I'm starting to get the idea that the editor of this list loves Nick Cave. I dont feel the same way, and I question the decision to have more than even one Nick Cave album on the list at all. 2/5

This is my first time ever hearing of Nick Cave, so as per usual I didn't know what to expect going into this album. What I found was some interesting instrumentals with somewhat obnoxious vocals. I just can't get past his voice. I didn't really enjoy this album, but it didn't outright offend me either. 4/10 Would I listen again? Probably not.

This list has a weird hard on for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

I always felt like I should make an effort to listen to Nick Cave, but now I'm starting to realise that I really shouldn't. This is the very definition of overwrought, everything is melodramatic and turned up to ten from start to end. It's a tiny bit like Tom Waits, but if he was shit. I find myself totally uninterested in the subject matter. I'm sure the lyrics are really clever, but they just left me cold. It was an effort to keep up with the constant thematic changes between songs and it rapidly became a chore. I'm going to award a star for not being an absolute misery to listen to, but it's pretty dire. The only high point came at the end, when it suddenly got a whole lot better. I actually got excited, figuring there was one redeemable track near the end. But nope, it was Spotify moving on to Sonic Youth and me not noticing the album was over.

Qué poco he escuchado a Nick Cave!

I really don't get the whole tortured vampire schtick of Nick Cave. Not my thing. Kurt Weil meets Anne Rice.

Every Nick Cave album I listen to I like him less and less, please stop making me listen to Nick Cave

I’d rather clean out my bathroom sink than listen to this again. It’s not the worst thing I’ve on here, though.

2.5. This album had a very interesting and unique sound. While I usually am a huge fan of experimental and unique sounds in music, I unfortunately did not find myself charmed by this album or its sound.

Sounds like Bruce Springsteen.

there's some good lyrics in here, but overall just really unexciting, the voice is interesting but not enough here to make it memorable or fun

2.5 it was ok. Kinda of like a discount less experimental Frank Zappa

This was a useful listen. I think that I should like NC, and often feel ...guilty? for not quite warming to his stuff. This album...however presents like pastiche of something not quite successfuly comprehended. So I'm quite comfortable in saying that I am underwhelmed by it. :)

It's been over a year since I listened to Nick Cave when I got another album from him (at least in this form). I still don't like it. This album was just ehh.... I don't like this guy and still don't understand why he got on this list so many times.

Maybe occasionally let the music breathe and stop inserting your Nick Cave-ness into everything.

First song was good. didn’t love much else. Loom of the land was okay at best

I love his voice. Was moved by his tribute at Shane MacGowan’s funeral. But not crazy about his song choices- monotonous.

Never heard of him before. Didn't like it, but didn't dislike it either. He sounds like David Johansen/Buster Poindexter.

1. papa uuont leave - 1.5 2. had a dream joe - 1 3. ztraight to you - 1 4. brother - 1 5. chriztina - 0 6. came to touun - 0 7. finnz uuife - 1 8. loom of the land - 1 9. jack the ripper - 0

Eh, I didn't pay much attention but I also wasn't that interested.

I can say I've never really heard a band that sounds like this (and from the looks of global reviews, it won't be the last time I'm listening to Nick Cave). You get a little blues, some rock, some folk. At the center of it you get Nick Cave, whose bold voice and distinct narration can come across as a bit over the top, melodramatic. But, its unique and at times kinda fun. I just don't see myself returning to it.

Zu düster! 2/5

Editors have given NC entirely too many records on this list, though this one isn't the worst of the lot. This is fine, but no great shakes, especially those of us who don't buy the schtick (and it seems very much to be that). "Straight to You" is solid+. "When I First Came To Town" is also good – no surprise the most straightforward tunes work best. The music is carefully considered, and occasionally interesting, but the jeremiads and morality plays don't really pay off. Nearly all of the rest is overdone and not a little pretentious; the ask to be taken so seriously lacks credibility, in one's view. Any comparison to Leonard Cohen (vocal quality, moral authority, songwriting/poetry chops) is ill-advised and does no service to NC. In fact, ranking Aussie + Kiwi rock stars just on the basis of personal preference, one finds NC outside the top 10, behind Michael Hutchence/INXS, Courtney Barnett, Tame Impala, Midnight Oil, Go-Betweens, Finn Bros/Split Enz, Crowded House, Triffids, The Beths, The Chills, The Cruel Sea, Rolling Blackouts and even the Little River Band for chrissakes, but certainly – if not hugely – ahead of AC/DC and Air Supply, maybe tied with Architecture in Helsinki.

Boring

I only like the slow tracks from Cave, none of that rocking stuff. Too much theatrical loudness or loud theatrics on this album

I really wanted to like this album, since nick cave has such a devoted following as a lyricist and original musician. But while the recording, instrumentation, and effects were often innovative, on my first listen I didn’t find his lyrics to be extraordinary, and his grating voice made the album all but unlistenable.

I think I had only heard a handful of Nick Cave songs prior. This album was enjoyable but not really anything special for me.

I really have trouble getting into any Nick Cave stuff and this is no exception. It sounds like dramatic talking with some music playing in the background.

I still don't like this group, but this was far better than some of their more recent albums that are, unfortunately, on this list.

It was pretty unique but I didn't really get into it

I thought I was going to like it, but it’s just kind of noisy. They have the one good song from Peaky Blinders but I hated all of these. Idk- I think I was in a good mood but I hated this. His voice is dumb and sounds like Kermit trying to be hard.

A min into track 1 I thought I hated it the longer I listened it grew on me a bit. I probably won't even listen to it again

The songs themselves were good, the vocalists were awful though

Ok. I’m gonna need someone to explain to me why I needed to hear that album before I die. As far as I can tell it’s a Nick Cave album. That’s it. His 7th album. No hits. No great innovations. Did it inspire a generation? Was it a turning point? If this keeps up I’m gonna start needing some justification for why these albums are on this list.

being so fr i got bored and then i got irritated and then i couldnt wait for it to end. im sure if i listen again later itll be better but god i just. ew album 3/6

Nick's voice and delivery is just too theatrical for me to enjoy, it feels like I should be watching an accompanying musical or something.

I prefer the Decemberists.

ok. not something i would misten to on replay everyday. first song was cool.

This felt more like a musical than an album. The dramatic and performative nature of it wasn't to my taste. I haven't found my stride with Nick Cave, though I know he is pretty widely appreciated.

I'm sorry, I can't do anymore Nick Cave. Please 1001, make these albums stop. Nick Cave plays like a humorless Jonathan Richman.

Used in the right way (i.e., used as a backing track to scenes in everything from Peaky Blinders, to a Harry Potter movie, to Ted Lasso) Nick Cave songs can be effective and even enjoyable. However, after listening to 4 albums of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds I am convinced that albums are not the "right way" to appreciate Nick Cave, which is best in small doses.

Is it finally over?!? Am I done hearing Nick Cave?!? After four albums I still think his vocals suck badly. The music on this album is pretty good though.

Not my thing. Too theatrical

Not my thing at all. Didn't really like the "grand cinematic-like soundtrack" approach it had. Previous Nick Cage records haven't worked for me either, so not a big a surprise.

Wel geinig, vooral qua teksten wat anders dan normaal maar muzikaal niet zo bijzonder, en laat dat nou net zijn waar ik het meest naar luister..! Would not buy

2/5 - Nick Cave is the worst part of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The music is fantastic and very well-orchestrated, theyre incredibly talented. Nicks insistence on being in every part of the song is overbearing, annoying and makes it nearly unlistenable. I cannot stand how he chooses to use his voices, and his reluctance to shake anything up in his lyrics. This is the third album I've listened to of them, and my opinion stands that if they were to be just a The Bad Seeds (drop that Nick guy) they would be incredible.

Demented musical theater, and not the good kind. Nick Cave is overrepresented on this list. Struggled through this one.

1001 has turned me from being ambivalent about Nick Cave to actively disliking him. Chill the fuck out dude.

Personally, not one of my favorite Nick Cave albums.

2/5 not to my liking

Four Nick Cave Albums? Why? It isn't good music. Some of the lyrics were somewhat humorous at times but nothing noteworthy. Definitely not good. I will round up.

Very much an acquired taste.

Punky blues, but thankfully nothing as awful as The Birthday Party. Not that poor, just not the beautiful, haunting Nick Cave of later albums veted on this list.

Sounds like a degraded combo of Jonny Cash and Leonard Cohen.

Another chore of a listen. Nothing about this album strikes me as innovative or musically significant. The lyrics made me roll my eyes more than a few times. Someone who contributes to this list just really likes Nick Cave, it seems.

I think I just don't like Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.

Eh. Not my thing.

I’m forever listening to albums from this book saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage?’ And the answer is always Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

Some interesting pieces in the playing here overwhelmed by too much schtick. Nick Cave is very hit or miss for me and I don't find this one interesting. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Does Nick Cave always sound like pirate music? This surprised me. I didn’t expect it to sound like pirate music. I probably could like a Nick Cave record, it seems eerie and weird. But not this one.

3.5 - I liked these types of hard strummin’, guttural croonin’, Irish-soundin’, whiskey drinking’, whore murderin’ pirate ditties better on “Murder Ballads.” On this album the schtick wears thin and I prefer the few tracks that stray from the mold, particularly “Loom of the Land” and “Jack the Ripper.”

Not the worst Nick Cave album, but still not a fan.

His style is very, very unique, and that fact alone give him a lot of credibility. After the hundreds of albums I’ve heard, it is quite impressive when an artist can sound so unlike any other to me. The only other artist I know of with somewhat similar music is Tom Waits. I feel very unsure what to think about this album. Part of me likes the energy and thinks it is very artistic and powerful and well put together, while another part of me thinks it is not that interesting or impressive or enjoyable. Actually that’s how I’ve felt about most of Nick Cave’s discography, he may be my most controversial artist. He’s been one of the harder artists for me to rate 2.5/5 for now, but someday I want to return to some of his albums

I think there was one other Nick Cave album on here. I'm not sure what I rated that one, but my review was probably similar. It's weird in a fun way that gets annoying after a while.

not my fav album from nick cave and the bad seeds

30 secs in. already not a fan. Yeah this was buns

The term Southern gothic comes to mind. This is a theatrical album with big songs that have pop hooks. It's OK. The band sounds good but I don't care for Cave's vocal performances.

3? i like his voice kinda deep and intense. I downgrade to 2 because a few later songs were so dreary it was tedious.

I get it, the curators here really dig Nick Cave. It comes built in with music appreciation pretensions. As for me, I fail to see any significant qualities on display here with this album other than extreme seriousness.

Too much Nick Cave for the average quality this act brings. I liked the urgency of the opening track and then the rest of it didn't impress me.

Strangeness. "Brother, My Cup Is Empty" reminds me of Jack Black so much. The overall sound makes me feel like the album doesn't take itself seriously. I don't know if it's the voice that sounds like someone parodying a singer, or what it is. It also reminds me at times of songs from TV shows like "I Think You Should Leave", especially the first song, "Papa Won't Leave You". Are the Bad Seeds a band of pirates lost at sea? What the heck is this album and what is it trying to do?

Can we stop with the Nick Cave albums

Nick Cave ends up all over the map for me. This one didn't really hit me right, and I think it's pretty much all down to the vibe of his singing on this album. Favorite track: Brother, My Cup is Empty

Lyrically was interesting, but not a big fan of early 90s yt music.

Just can't get into this one. I like Nick's voice and swagger but the tunes are generic and uninventive. He's done better.

ugh no thanks we've had enough Nick Cave. 2/5.

I think it's the last Nick Cave album i hehe to listen to, thankfully

Straight to You is okay but I just really didn’t like his voice.

Not a fan of this at all.

This sucks.

this was a bit much for me……

No, thank you.

Kinda hating it. I hate how he sings. Noise for real

doesn't work without cillian murphy. hate the vocal fry. not for me

They had a dream I had a nightmare

I took Nick Cave off of do not play for this?

Used to be a big fan but not since he showed himself to be a zio prick!

Ich hab's im Schnelldurchgang gehört, um guten Gewissens eine schlechte Bewertung geben zu können. Aus Vermutung, dass sich solche Alben durch die "did not listen" Funktion in der Liste halten...

Big ol' dud.

This album was bad…almost comically bad. I kept debating if I should just turn it because the singing was awful, but halfway through my computer started to get weird and the music stopped, so I guess the computer made my decision for me lol. Didn’t finished the rest of the album one I fixed the computer.

Nick Cave, 3eme album =>1/5 Beaucoup trop de chant, parfois insupportable ('Jack the Ripper'). Aucun intérêt par ailleurs, je ne suis pas allé au bout. Et dire qu'il reste encore deux albums ...

Dat mensen hier vrijwillig geld aan geven is onbegrijpelijk. Saai, depressief, meh

Favourite Songs: Brother, My Cup Is Empty

- I don't mind the music, but the lyrics are not it; they take away to much from my ability to enjoy the music - Nick has some other songs I enjoy, but overall I cannot get behind how awkward this is to listen to.

What do you know. A faggot ass vampire that does country doesn't make good music. 0/9 0.00%

My 3rd Nick Cave album?? I didn't even want 1 😭😭😭

Mostly dreary, some songs unlistenable, but I pushed through!

is it rock? is it folk? folk rock? rock folk? it's (r/c)o(f/l)k papa won't leave you henry--ok.. ok..... weird..... getting weirder........ i had a dream-- str**ght to you-- brother my cup is empty--i drink alone by george thorogood and the destroyers???? christina the astonishing-- why are the overwhelming majority of these albums so fucking angst ridden?!? have you read the news lately?? i don't need MORE angst in my life. when i first came to town--the welcome guest on mermaid avenue by billy bragg & wilco john finns wife--i want to vomit. please remind me why i need to listen to this shit before i die. "oOoOoh look at me i'm so edgy" 1/5

Same shit as all the other Nick Cave stuff.

Interesting but I personally hated it. Country mixed with sailor ballad story telling. It seemed like a bad musical. 1/5 Fave song: Loom of the Land

How many albums does this fuckstick band even have?

No me gusto. Mezcla rara de generos. Y la voz de el no me gusto

Clamorous

Agh....... Is the sound I made when I saw I was given another Nick Cave album. I REALLY did not like the previous one, "Murder Ballads", for reasons. I don't care how "historically important" people say his music is, I do not find it compelling. I just think that he should have chosen another path in his life. I think that when he was getting started someone should have sat him down and told him he just doesn't have a very nice singing voice. But hey what do I know, I love Bob Dylan and some people can't stand his voice. However, Bob Dylan CAN actually sing and I don't think Nick Cave can. His lyrics too aren't my favorite. As I'm listening to it, the same trend is appearing of crude, nasty lyrics that I do not find appealing at all. Also, there is a lot of repetition, a LOT. A lot of times repetition can be good, however that's only if the lyrics and melody are actually good! So he didn't quite hit either one of those marks there. Agh... Just WHY does this guy have 5 whole albums on this list and someone like Gillian Welch only has one. She could easily have at least 3!!!! His music just feels a little cringey like he's trying to be edgy or something. "I am the captain of my fate"... okay affirmations? Keep those to your mirror, buddy. Yeah, that's enough of all that. Again I am hearing him being offkey again? I think? It just feels like he's not exactly hitting those notes. "Christina the astonishing was the most astonishing of all"... Wow nice one! The only song I can stand to listen to is "Straight to You".

Nick Cave is very hit or miss for me, though he's not a very accessible artist. Really not an enjoyable listen. From the advent, a very grating, gutteral, vocal performance that I can only describe as parody-like. Intriguing lyricism marred by many very repetitive choruses which aren't enjoyable enough to warrant it. Very well instrumented. Not sure if Nick Cave may be too pompous, or I just can't enjoy more artistic and less conventional rock. Honestly cringes listening to some of this even though I understand it has quality.

Just not an enjoyable listen.

I really kept wanting this one to end and it's not even that long. It's just not my tune I guess. 1.5/5

3 Nick Cave albums down, 1 to go and I don't think I get it even 1% more than when I started this journey. Maybe this last (?) stretch will be when it all clicks and I'll see the genius in vampire bayou rock music.

Another Nick Cave album i simply do not understand. I hate this so much my god.

Couldn't stand the lead's voice, though they clearly had a distinct style. Grating, unpleasant, and it was terrible putting this on after a long day. Maybe you just need to be in a very specific listening mood.

ngl not really my thing. don’t really like the songs enough to have a fave

Enough, enough! Please release me of this fever dream 😟

Que álbum ruim. O cara canta muito mal, tá doido.

Did not enjoy his vocals or the songs

not good

Really did not enjoy this album. This might be the least favorite one from this experience so far. Just does not sound good at all.

Well that's 0/4, I think i got the point after the first one. Honestly, might as well just be a fucking author at this point. Dude wants to always tell his weird little stories but he just sings them so horribly and the music just seems like a second thought. Also, I can't shake the vibe that he would be the least fun person at parties. Like wearing a trench coat to a theme park, the antithesis of fun and sucking the life out of everything. Maybe there's a musical theatre somewhere that would entertain this nonsense but it wont be the theatre of my earbuds ever again. 1/5

Literally unbearable

Less Henry's dream, more sort of Henry's nightmare. Musicianship was good. I just found it a completely unpleasant listen.

This is not his best and I am wondering why it was included in this list at the expense of something else. There was very little 'mood' and a fair bit of bad singing.

This is terrible. Maybe people like this for the lyrics? Downer musically, downer vocals. Blech!

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of this. Felt like an assault on my ears.

Hard to say. Subject matter questionable, musically OK, the deep voice id creepy, prob would not chose to listen to this

Not for me

I’d like to give it a 0. Didn’t like this one at all.

Nick Cave and Tom Waits are perfectly interchangeable to me. They are both so committed to their persona that they are a one-lane, one way road that is experienced the exact same way, mile after mile, year after year. It is a dirty, bumpy road, littered with imaginary casualties. No matter, the tires won't bounce and any curves in the road are gentle and barely noticeable. There is no destination or end to the road, only a horizon that looks just like where it all started from. Maybe it's actually am amusement park ride, staying locked into it's loop of track. The listener enjoys the safety of being strapped into the cart, while Nick Cave and Tom Waits perform their schtick of murder ballads and pseudo-poetic drinking songs. In either case, I do not enjoy the ride and dread having to sit through it again. The guy running the Tilt-O-Whirl just off the Van Halen Expressway seems pretty drunk and wants to play some Whitesnake over the loudspeaker. That looks wayyyy more fun.

No offense but who put this on here

Not my jam

Horrendous voice made it through without ears bleeding. Definitely never going to be on my playlist.

This was not for me. At all. I appreciate it, and I appreciate Nick Cave, but this is not my cup of tea.

Alright so we start off with a singer who can't sing. I hated this fuckin album. Just all over the place and wasn't in the least bit enjoyable. 2/10.

Have already written a lot about why I don't like Nick Cave's music. Someone else's review calling it melodramatic and overwrought captures it very well for me. There are far too many Cave albums on this list, in my humble opinion.

I don't know what it is about Nick Cave, but his songs do absolutely nothing for me.

Genuinely cannot tell if this is parody or just bad. How is this must-listen?

When Papa Won't Leave You, Henry felt like it was 23 minutes long, I knew I was in trouble. Surely this has to be a joke. Wannabe deep lyrics sung by someone doing a bad mash-up impersonation of Johnny Cash and David Johnansen. By the end I was almost actively hating this music. Even now, the memory of listening to it makes me cringe. I'm not that far along in the 1001, mid 200's, but without a doubt this is the worst album I have listened to so far. I sure can't wait to listen to the other Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds albums on the list.

Couldn't wait for this to be over. It's certainly 'alternative' as Apple music assumes that's it's genre. It's alternative from being good. Hesitant 1 star.

Not digging this. Too something...not sure what

Zionist and genocide apologist. Pah. I never rated him that highly. Heroin chic never did it for me. Some of his later stuff is good. But this is dire empty nothing. Not here though. A must miss. And yes I know that there are those who love him. That’s perfectly ok. But any genocide apologist is morally abhorrent.

cant do it

Not sure this one is for me.

i hate you

weird, he doesn't really sing and just seems angry 2 out of 10

I do not enjoy this all that much. 1.5

I am struggling with his irritating vocal style which comes across as "faintly drunk pub folk singer". Why must he stick "-uh" to the end of most lines? "dream-uh", "reverend-uh", "neck-uh", "head-uh". It is an intensely annoying vocal tick. The lyrics might be deep and meaningful but I can't listen to the delivery. 1/5.

Nick Cave #5, no change in my comment. no need to hear before I die !

I'm genuinely upset how many fucking nick cave albums are on this list.

OMG ANOTHER ONE?????

Not for me

Bad way to end the year, onto 2025!

I listened to the first 20 seconds of the first song, personally will not be bothered to the rest of the album. Rusty nails are being driven into my skull one by one.

Not my style

talk about BORING

I tried twice to get through this. The first time I got about half way through before I had to turn it off because it was too weird and distracting. I picked it up again, before getting about two songs in and hating it even more. This album is dogshit lmao I don't understand what is going on through half of it, I can't even write a good review for this because my brain subconsciously filters it out as white noise until the parts where it's too weird to not focus on anything but that.

This was just boring. I don't get the inclusion in the list. Also, the guy's voice annoys me.

If they could get a singer who knows how to song I tune, this could actually be enjoyable. But then still not great, a bit too over the top constantly. A good album need balance, this one doesn't have any of that.

I don't feel like this guy is a talented singer at all. He's mostly "talky" like Shatner (although not to this extreme), and when he sings he's often flat. Some of the songs were okay, but overall I was not a fan.

This. Is. Terrible. It’s a self-important nonsense of babbling lyrics. Nick Cave must’ve become the lead singer because he owned the mic and wanted to be in a Warren Zevon tribute band. Rubbish.

“Papa won’t leave you Henry! Papa won’t leave you boy"! Well if Papa sings like this, then I sure hope he leaves. I could not stand this man’s vocals, style, or lyrics. Though, I really dug that backing band’s performance and their occasional vocal harmonization. I would choose this group to support any other lead singer. I can’t stress how much I hate this man’s voice. Favorite track: “Straight To You”

Hard work. Too many words for each sentence and signing really needs to be more than shouting! Weird as I love Red Right Hand in Into My Arms but I can’t find anything redeemable here. First one I haven’t put any tracks onto my ‘favourites’ list from. 2/10

immediately no

It's a lot. It'd be better if there was less of it.

Imagine if the most annoying person you know forced you to go to an off broadway musical they produced. This is the soundtrack. The best thing I can say about this is that "Straight to you" sounds like an old Hootie and the Blowfish song. I don't like Hootie and the Blowfish.

Weird, didn’t enjoy it

Every shit thing he thought got recorded. And all of it made this list.

His music is really hit or miss for me. This was a miss

Not for me.

Is this a joke?

Despite the list owner loving Nick Cave, I sadly do not. Really really grating voice. Spoils every track tbh. Please no more, this is #3 and I'm only a third of the way through the list. Make it stop.

I don’t understand why so many Nick Cave albums are necessary. Emphasis on the BAD seeds because what is going on here. The very first sound of this album I immediately knew it would consist of 45 minutes of torture, and I was right. His voice is excruciating to listen to and the music along with it is just horrible as well.

Dumb. I mostly hate reading the off-putting and closed-minded Robert Christgau but he nailed it here: "...if this is your idea of great writing, you may be ripe for his cult. Otherwise, forget it—the voice alone definitely won't do the trick." also this is the 93rd Nick Cave album on this list. 92.5 too many. 2/10 1 star

Starting to think this guy might be more annoying that Tom Waits. That typical "troubador" type style that just doesn't work for me, at all. Opening with an absolute dud of a track, "Papa Won't Leave You." I think Henry would prefer a little alone time, maybe some peace and quiet (don't worry: I confirmed that Henry is not actually the name of any of his sons, this one's fiction so I don't feel bad poking fun). Aside from that, yeah the album is more or less just shitty goofy songs from a guy who's convinced he's in some higher plane relationship with music. Can you tell I'm becoming a hater? Ghosteen was great, I think I kinda liked Skeleton Tree too, but the bit has worn very thin for me, I just simply cannot be bothered with this, frankly, pretty awful music. Favorite tracks: Straight to You. Album art: Part of me likes this for the color and variety, but another part of me just sees it as a stupid picture of Nick Cave on a billboard. 1.5/5

Didn't even waste my time with this tone deaf BS. Imagine 2 albums of this garbage on this list... Geez. Hope they don't show up again

Same as the other nick cave albums, I just don't get it. Quite like his voice, the music is fine without anything really standing out but the lyrics get on my nerves. A bit like Paul Simon as Jack pointed out, the sort of random conversation/story approach to these songs doesn't work at all in my opinion. Wouldn't listen again, I'm just not a Nick Cave fan.

Nicht so meins

Not for me

Stopped after swearing started

Waste of my time. A million boos.

I had hope for this because I like the album cover but wow I hated that so much.

It sounds like the music that a band in a movie about the rise and fall of a shaggy glam rock band with a real bastard singer would play and you'd think, hey that sounds pretty decent for a band from a movie, they really nailed how a band like that would sound. Some good atmospheric reverb&tremolo guitar sounds. The songs are dark and moody with a driving propulsive energy that suits the histrionic spiraling vocals. He has a very vegemite hit or miss voice, and it's a miss for me. That makes paying close attention to the lyrics - which meant to be the selling point? The storytelling and the characters? - a bit tough since it means focusing in on the most annoying part of the music: his pseudo Jim Morrison goth crooning. I guess they have a cult following, from decent live shows and lyrical lore, but I wonder if it isn't maybe among people who, in general, prefer movies to music? Even the cover suggests that interpretation.

I'd accept this album as an outro ending track for a show -- nothing else. Edgy slam poetry for guys who like beer and westerns. 1/5 - "Not listening to this again."

Did not enjoy. Not my kind of thing.

One listen was enough, lacks musicality.

Not for me

So Nick was angry, got drunk, went to a karaoke bar, and somebody recorded it. Got it. Enough with the Nick Cave albums already, ffs.

My second album by these folks and I haven’t been a fan of either.

This guy has way too many albums on this list. How much depressing talk singing can one person make yet alone listen to. Nick cave is probably now one of my least favorite artists because of this list. 2.7/10

Do people think this is good?

Droney and not pleasant

2 Barely Eh fuck it 1

Couldn’t get a grasp. Sounds like parody music but worse.

Well. That's the last Nick Cave album on the list for me and at least it's over. 870-some-odd albums in and Cave has become my most hated artist on the list. Which is saying something because the list also has Neil Young on it and that guy's a total tosser. But Cave takes first prize due to his skeezy songwriting and fake "ooh, I'm scary" performances. Such garbage. Glad I'm done with it.
