Reviews (page 4 of 11)
Dei due che ho sentito di Teilor Suift questo mi è piaciuto abbastanza dai Shake it off alza il voto
There’s a reason she’s the biggest artist of a generation. Accessible, catchy, fun. A great pop record in my opinion. Not many—if any—tracks whiff from this album. Breezed right through. Some true bonafide bangers that will be played for decades.
I dont know if this is her best album (it probably is) but I can definitely say that this is her most far-reaching one. I was, before this project, not one to listen to Taylor Swift but I had heard almost all of these songs prior to listening through this album today.
I already liked this album, but it feels incredibly good coming off the back of listening to the dire The Life of a Showgirl that was released last week. This is my favourite TS album outside of the folklore/evermore period, and it’s great to listen to her doing some proper pop bangers from before she was *the* biggest star on the planet (don’t get me wrong, she was still hugely successful, but it felt like she still gave a shit about her work). I haven’t listened to Taylor’s Version of this album yet, so I’m going to give that a whirl after this, but yeah: great album that I’m sure every boring old bloke on this website has reviewed fairly and objectively… Started listening to the Taylor’s Version of this album, and it’s just the exact same thing - I thought she might have mixed things up a bit and composed the songs a bit differently but no, so I binned that idea off.
if you had a lab that could somehow create perfectly distilled pop music in songs under 4:00 in length, this is the album it would create. Production and lyrics are perfectly intertwined and nothing feels too quick nor overstaying its welcome. This is the album that made the Taylor Swift industrial machine that's still churning out tens of millions of sold albums and billions of listened minutes on Spotify...
Full of modern pop hits, it sounds great, but safe.
This one surprised me. Almost every track is an earworm, and that’s not just pop sheen — the songwriting holds up, as proven by Ryan Adams covering the entire album. It’s bright, polished, and maybe a little too sleek to feel like a 5 for me, but I can’t deny how strong it is start to finish. Definitely a 4, and part of me wonders if it deserves more.
This is the first album we've listened to that I can say I remember from when it came out in 2014. And I know all of the songs. An instant classic.
Makes me nostalgic for the early days of my career. Probably the most iconic album of today’s most iconic performer. Also represents the shift from All American Girl to music megastar. Favorite track: New Romantics
I was a serious swiftie when this came out so this is very nostalgic for me but it’s also just a great album. Very iconic!
I mean it's fire. It's got pretty much her only danceable song with Shake It Off, but the rest is good too. Overall it's definitely better than her most recent album. I miss the poppier stuff.
that’s some catchy shit. fun music is fun.
I wouldn’t call myself a Swiftie but I love this album. It’s fun and makes me happy.
My wife loves T Swift. So, by association I listen to A LOT of her music. Of all of her albums, this is probably my favorite. All that said, being the best of a massed produced, hyper processed, ultra engineered genre of music isn't saying much in my book.
This is very "white man in his 30s" of me, but I am really into this album because of the Ryan Adams cover version. I know basically all of the lyrics. On its own merits, this is still very good. Shake It Off is one of my favorite songs of the 2010s.
The other reviews seem to be split between love and hate, which is odd, because for almost any album I have seen on this list there is a spectrum of opinions. Obviously Taylor is the biggest music star in the world at the moment so everyone's got an opinion and more than a few want to take her down a peg. But come on, even if you don't like her, this is some top-tier pop music. Great production without being overproduced, clear vocals (effects used sparingly, with her voice standing on its own) with clear messages, a lot of fun to listen to and it made me smile, which the prospect of ANOTHER David Bowie album does not. Music can and should cover all emotions and feelings, and simple fun is one of those. Not every album has to be a pretentious thinkpiece.
Lacking the lyrical depth of Taylor’s later work, 1989 was EVERYWHERE when it dropped, and truly launched her to superstardom. It brings me back to a very specific period of my life. While a bit vanilla, I still consider this her pop peak. Multiple radio hits don’t lie. The sonic aesthetic of the album bops but fails to evolve or demonstrate meaningful variety though, keeping this just below the highest echelon of pop albums. Listened to: on a flight to Tirana. Favorite tracks: Bad Blood, Wildest Dreams, I Know Places
20.00, hima, koss, qobuz finally some good music! eivaa kiva kuulla tääkin kokonaisuutena bängää paikoin
This is my second favorite Taylor Swift album. No other comments, haha.
This was a wonderful listen - the songs I hadn't heard before had a lot of interesting sounds!
I put this on as my wife and daughter came into the house from piano lessons. They love this album. Annie danced and setup a weird cat space in the living room. John went outside to play soccer. Colleen and I sat in the porch and chatted. There are a couple bangers. I would never put it on if it didn't make the ladies in my life so happy. Keep it up Taylor.
i haven’t listened to this one in a while, but it was on regular rotation upon its release. i still remember the day it was released fondly. my friend and i hauling ass to our local target across town after school so we could secure a copy of the deluxe CD (which i still have)… the album itself still holds up quite well despite a few duds (Bad Blood, Shake It Off). the other singles are staples of Swift’s catalogue and genuinely great pop songs, with Style being her magnum opus (in my opinion, of course). also has some great deep cuts like Clean, I Wish You Would, etc. overall it’s nice to revisit this album before her next, which i will inevitably tune into because the 1989 production team worked on it 🤷♀️
Haters gonna hate. I quite like it. Not sure if it is influential but it's a great pop album of its time.
This was an easy, fun and enjoyable listen. This isn't really my kind of thing but it is still a strong 4 for me. If you wanted to make the case that this is a 5 you wouldn't get an argument from me, it's a very good album.
This album has its mainstream bangers for sure. More importantly, it marks her style shift to a more pop style which has propelled her to a global superstar. At least she writes her own stuff which is more than can be said of many artists in this genre. All that said, I give the album and artist their props, but it’s just not a style I gravitate towards. “Out of the woods” would have been a fitting last track for my ears.
I enjoyed this. Not a lot of depth here, which appears to kinda be the point with her shift into this more synth-pop style. I think overall the songs are not amazing and do pretty much sound the same. But a good consistent spirit seems to help this whole collection along. Tracks like Style and I Wish You Would stood out to me this time. And while it’s easy to harsh on Taylor, credit needs to be given for an overall good listen. Shave it down 2-3 songs and the album probably jumps higher.
Hilarious seeing how polarizing this album is. Sure the songs may be simple and formulaic, but I’ll be damned if they aren’t catchy. Gotta give Tay her props and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy this.
Great example of hit songs alone not adding up to a great album. I like many of these songs but everything feels sorta… flat. Not a lot of depth and songs end up running together. I’ll give Tay Tay her flowers but this falls short of top tier IMO. 4/5
I actually liked this quite a bit. I liked the retro synth pop feel, the vocal delivery was spot on, the songs were just catchy enough, without being syrupy. I think I'll go with a 4 star rating.
8/10… teen - happy pop
Solidly produced album, perhaps her strongest album to date
Guess this is the big breakthrough album when Taylor Swift’s transformation from country to pop is fully realised. Slickly produced, this is what 2010s pop sounds like. Second half is forgettable though. But it started me on a journey of her other albums (upon recommendation from a friend) and I found that I like folklore much more.
Lots of great songs. It’s too long. Taylor always needs editing.
As much as I hate to admit it (because I’m not a Swiftie), this album kinda slaps
# Album Name: 1989 # Artist: Tay Tay # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: A very over produced pop album. Parts sound extremely generic. But theres no doubt theres several strong singles. # Top Tunes: WTNY / Blank space / Style / Shake it off / Bad blood # Would I listen to it again? Just the five tracks
I first listened to this album in its entirety in preparation for attending The Eras Tour with my wife. My wife, it should be known, is a big Swiftie. My goal was not to become one myself, but rather to have the proper context for the tour. Well, I became one anyway. I'm not the most intense one you'll ever meet. I don't know insane bits of trivia, and I couldn't care less about her public or private life. And I do find her omnipresence in our culture to be annoying and redundant at times. But her music is, undeniably in my opinion, very well made. She has a unique sound, one that has evolved over nearly 20 years in the public eye. She has evolved as a songwriter, as a singer, and as a musician. She knows how to pick her collaborators, and she knows how to write a hit. I feel no shame and suffer no embarrassment in telling you that I not only respect Taylor Swift for her talents and performance ability, I also genuinely enjoy much of her music. Below is the review I wrote when I initially listened to her discography up to "Midnights." I mostly stand by it today, so I figured I'd take the easy route on this one and reuse it here. But then I this preface, so here we are, I suppose. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A pop masterpiece. Even the songs I left out of my standouts are excellent. This was, by far, her most sonically consistent album up to this point in her career. Everything has this airiness, this light breathiness about it that is so consistent throughout. It unites the album and makes it feel more like a cohesive piece of art than anything she'd done before. The themes are a little more mature (not saying they ARE mature, but more so than prior albums which felt much more fairytale love song), the sound is more complex and produced, and the overall effort is to be applauded. This was the best album she'd produced at this point in her career. Very impressive. Hit after hit, you can't find anything wrong with it. All of that applies to every song except "Shake It Off." "Shake It Off" does not belong on this album. At all. Sonically, it's completely different. Gone is the airiness of the rest of the songs. Gone are the more grown up themes. Gone are the more interesting, more mature lyrics. This song was written to be a radio hit. It was released as the lead single. It would have been better as a non-album single. Or a song she wrote for someone else. Or a vault track later on. It doesn't belong on this album. She chose this over "New Romantics," a track she left off the album entirely and saved as a bonus track??? I didn't much care for "This Love," "How You Get the Girl," or "Clean." But they're still good songs. I feel like "I Know Places" is an early look into what she would do on "Reputation," the subsequent album. I find this to be an entirely enjoyable pop album that, while it doesn't have much new to say, really scratches that pop music itch we all have, whether we'd like to admit it or not. I'm happy to admit I do, and I'll scratch away all day. Four stars. Standout Tracks: Blank Space, Style, Out of the Woods, Bad Blood, I Know Places
Not only is '1989' deeply nostalgic for me, but I also think it's a fire album. Star down only because the best was yet to come.
I don't normally like TS. And I really only like a few songs on this album. But this is a very good album. It as a lot of variety and diversity. It has a great order to it and at least it's not totally about some relationship with some boy like almost 100% of TS songs that came before this. Even the songs I don't really like have something about them that I like or can admire. Can't deny it, this is a very good album. But I have to emphasize, I belive the reason Shake it off was such a big hit is because it's true and personal and NOT about a guy. I wanna hear more of that. (But, that is NOT a "sick beat")
It'd be a 4.5 if we could do halves.
Day584 - i was a fan of ryan adams cover of this whole album but i’ve never heard the original. welcome to new york isn’t a good first song but it really picks up after that
Favorite Track: Out of the Woods
Awesome album
-this was one of the first albums i owned as a kid. soooo many great and iconic songs, probably Taylor’s most fun and listenable album imo -there are a few parts that are. very corny and rough. my god the Shake It Off rap verse. but i think it’s an overwhelmingly solid record and one of the most important pop albums of the 2010s -Favorites are Style, Out Of The Woods, and All You Had To Do Was Stay
I was quite impressed by this album, it’s a pretty good pop record to be honest. I’d listened through the Taylor’s version before which now having heard the original, the original is much better. I don’t really need all the bonus tracks and frankly I prefer the older albums production as well.
Has some great tunes and you can see why it was such a hit. Bit also, so filler tracks that you'll want to skip
7/10 girl you are not a vibe
A lot of hits. Extremely catchy and very well produced album
Iconic I’ll give it that. But sometimes it feels very generic. I know it’s about the music more than the lyrics but I made the mistake of listening to bad blood too closely and it’s just so vague. Maybe I’m too harsh. Specific rating -3.8 Fav song- blank space Least fav- bad blood
It’s not my favourite Taylor swift album- I don’t think the lyrics are quite at the level some of her other albums reach. That being said it is banger after banger- I found picking favourite/least very difficult cause almost any song on this album could be my favourite on any given day. Favourite song: Out of The Woods (or Is It Over Now? if we include bonus/vault songs) Least: All You Had To Do Was Stay
I once lost an argument comparing Bob Dylan to Paul Westerberg. They are in fact not on the same level. The Replacements leader captures nostalgia for a specific moment of doubt and change and uncertainty that we all navigate. Bob writes about something unknown and it somehow becomes universal. That same person years later presented my argument back to me on the form of Taylor Swift. At the time I didn't "understand" TS. Not that I do now but I recognize game. And I can't ever know what it's like to be a a xten year old girl - I do know what it's like to hear Sixteen Blue as a teenager. And I know how great it feels to return to that moment - for only a moment - through a 4 minute pop song. And that is how music transcends - 4 minutes at a time. This song a a greatest hits album for most people. It's the moment Taylor Swift became Taylor. Even I can pick up what she's throwing down.
Awesome, largely mellow album, full of pop hits. Simple, clean music.
Carefully crafted pop, with a human feel, especially joyful on Shake It Off
Okay so yes the lyrics are vacuous and I’m not really into the valorization of the female fuckboy thing, but finally listening to this helped me understand her superstardom better. It’s fun!
83% Best: Blank Space; All You Had To Do Was Stay; Bad Blood; I Know Places; Clean Must-Hear? Sure
Great album! Catchy music!
this album is very entry level for the genre, very easy to get into it because of the recognizability of the tracks, i enjoy a lot of the songs because i think they’re fairly catchy, i think it’s an important album for modern pop as well, great listen
Masterstroke pop transition. Tight fucking hooks and breakdowns with soaring background vocals. I am particularly partial to the "boys only want love if its torture" bit. She is definitely singing "lonely starbucks lovers" and not "long list of ex lovers." Can't fool me.
Quite the pleasant suprise. Shake It Off, Blank Space, Out of the Woods, and Bad Blood are solid, and great examples of the genre. I could have sworn these were more recently originally released than 2014 - so fairly enduring. Welcome to New York was alright too. The production was good too, refreshing and not overly complex. It is funny how much I fairly genuinely enjoyed this album, and disliked Evermore. This one was good enough for me to listen to the re-recorded Taylor's version. Didn't notice any differences. By then, I'd had my fill though. I know you should write about your life experiences, yada yada, but I think here she managed to also capture a sense of fun and irony with (a majority) of her lyrics. Perhaps unlike some of her other stuff, which is fairly maudlin, pedestrian, and lacking some self-awareness.
We love her.
imagine dragons for girls
One of my preferred Taylor albums
Better than I expected but still not a Swiftie
First, and foremost, billionaires are inherently unethical, and Taylor Swift is a billionaire. I realize she was far from billionaire status when this album was released, but nevertheless, it needs to be taken into consideration. With that being said, she's clearly not as bad as most billionaires. Now, Swift is the most polarizing musician in the United States Of America. If it's not her misogynistic haters who get a boner listening to Morgan Wallen, it's her cult of Swifties who would have you convinced her diarrhea tastes better than pizza. It's very hard to have any views on here that fits in between these two, but I'm here to let you all know I fall into this (ever) so shrinking demographic. What we have on this album is some great Pop songs which have endured more than a decade. Some of you won't admit it, but you'll catch yourself singing the chorus of these songs to yourself. Thankfully, Swift, at the very least, ditched her Country Music career. Favorite Track: "Shake It Off".
I forgot how insanely catchy this album is. The fact that I was able to sing along in some capacity to every single track came as a shock, but in retrospect is completely unsurprising given how often I used to listen to it. Catchy lyrics and an easy to listen to sound are two of the things that Taylor does very well. I do feel as if it generally lacks the depth I often look for in the music I listen to, but I’m willing to overlook it due to how /fun/ it all is. However, due to how catchy the lyrics are they did have a tendency to start to grate on me a little bit towards the end of each track, and while I was generally able to overlook how corny they are, in certain tracks such as Bad Blood it was particularly apparent. Overall, while I will not pretend this album is some sort of lyrical or musical masterpiece, it’s very good at being what it is: a fun collection of catchy pop music. Favourite track: I Wish You Would
Good pop songs about bad break-ups
I own this one… sorta. The first time I heard these songs, it was courtesy of Ryan Adams, who covered the album in its entirety. And it’s great! The arrangements were vastly altered, and while the brainless Swifties were quick to condemn his work, Taylor herself heaped high praise. It had surprised me that he described her album as “perfect”, and given his popularity at the time, that is a bucket of respect. Since then, he’s been Me-Too’d, and who now gives a fuck what he thinks? Me. I still listen to his album on regular. First time I’ve sat thru this version. It’s good, and she’s a great lyricist. Not sure what’s all the hubbub about her, why the vitriol and social media madness. To hell with all that. I hope she keeps kicking ass!
personne ne m'avais jamais dit que taylor swift c'etait aussi bien !!
Surprisingly enjoyable. A well crafted album, mixing the crowd pleasers with some slower tempo songs
Perfect poptimism, Taylors lyrics, Antonoffs production. Tay Tay at the top of her game.
Was surprised by this. Pop music bangers. Not really my thing but the quality is undeniable
Despite all the metal and hip-hop I enjoy, I have to admit I do like Taylor Swift a lot (currently wearing my favorite T-Swift muscle shirt). And for a while, 1989 was my favorite record from her (eventually dethroned by Folklore). After a re-listen today (Taylor's version, obviously), I'd say that opinion still holds up. In fact, the entire album up through "Wildest Dreams" is pretty much some of her best work to date. "Out Of The Woods" and "All You Had To Do Was Stay" are two of my favorite TS songs ever. And the singles "Blank Space" and "Shake It Off" were worldwide hits for a good reason. On this record, it felt like Taylor found a magical balance between catchy songwriting and her signature narrative lyricism that would continue through her discography to this day. The biggest complaint I have about this album is, like most TS albums, it runs a little long. There are definitely a few tracks that could be cut from the tracklist, especially "This Love." It is far and away one of the most inane songs she's ever written. The lyrics are atrocious, the song is boring, and I skip it every time. But I bet there are a ton of fans out there who would consider it their favorite, and that's the fun thing about music.
I really like a lot of this, but I have the same issue with this as most of her albums. The songs start all sounding the same and blend together. I might get to 4.5, but the engineering/producing keeps it at 4.
In my wheelhouse.... Talented singer -songwriter. Mainstream pop, but in the good sense
You may or may not be a fan of Taylor Swift, but it is really hard to deny that this is simply a really, really good pop album. This is the first Taylor Swift album I’ve ever listened to, and honestly it won’t be the last. I may be a rock and metal head at heart, but I’ve always recognised great pop stuff, and this is totally that.
Classic
4.3 - I enjoyed this more than I ever thought I would.
I'm not the target demo here. I get that Taylor and the producers massively changed the pop sound for years with this album. After the fact, this album sounds like every single other pop-princess.
Not my music, but definitely some catchy tunes.
It was very interesting to listen to this album because even though I have only heard a few songs from it out in the world, I am really familiar with these songs because I have listened to the Ryan Adams cover version album dozens of times. So even though the instrumentation is different and Ryan made them sound like Ryan Adams songs, the lyrics are the same and the melodies are similar enough to make it feel like I have heard these songs before. I found myself tapping my feet and when I compare them I realize that these are just good, well written songs in either version. I am not a pop music kind of guy really but I have always respected Taylor Swift for being an artist who seems to really be true to her own vision and talent. I'm not likely to play this again but for what it is and the audience it is intended for, it's as good as contemporary pop music can be.
This album is worthy of study. This record transitioned T Swift into icon status. Iconic gets tossed around willy-nilly these days, but she's an icon now...Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Madonna....icons who caught the whole world's attention for a number of years. Taylor is on that list now, and this album started that movement. There isn't a cheat code to this, its a bit of magic...but ultimately you need catchy catchy catchy songs, and this album has that.
I liked this album. I've not listened to an entire album by Swift before. I like almost all of her radio singles. The non-radio singles were mostly strong, but by the end, the last three felt like just a bunch of 'Taylor Swift-isms' thrown together and they weren't as strong as the rest of the album.
Even if you're not a big fan of her music, it's hard to deny how impressively Taylor Swift pivoted with this album and became an incredible musical juggernaut. And it's equally hard not to enjoy all of the singles on this and subsequent albums; it almost feels like she's somehow created greatest hits albums with each new release. She's managed to combine her undeniable success with a seemingly genuine personality and very savvy business sense, and created a lasting 21st phenomenon that seems rivalled only by Beyonce (and probably only Madonna and Michael Jackson from the 20th century). I've never listened to this album in its entirety (although impossible to miss all the singles), so that was nice to experience. It's definitely not music for musicians or even songwriters, but it's certainly entertaining (and I'm confident that the numerous videos on this album are equally so, although I wasn't able to watch them).
There’s a reason Taylor has the absolute reign over pop music stardom, and 1989 is proof positive. All the way through the album there’s just incredible pop hits and her lyrics are the sharpest they’ve been. It’s very easy to pile on Taylor, especially for her more recent lack of editing, but this is a certified classic album, no matter how you slice it. Only knocked it down a star for some of the more derivative songs.
it can get to all feel the same sometimes but beyond that its fun
This album is hard for me to rate. On one hand, this is pretty cut and dry pop music. It has some catchy tracks, some decent vocals, and some well written lyrics. On the other hand, I know it speaks volumes to a lot of people. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. A lot of Taylor Swift's music is a window into an emotional state that I personally have very little experience with. I have been extremely lucky in love, and have experienced very little heartbreak, betrayal, or any other classic themes featured heavily in Swift's song writing. I am also not a mega star, with a lot of eyes watching me all the time. I don't have "haters" but can appreciate the mantra of shaking them off. That being said, I can still objectively listen to the music. 1989 is a good pop album. I know a lot of people will give this a 1, a lot will give it a 5. I think it's clearly not a 1. It's catchy enough to at least warrant a 2. I like the music, I like the messages, I do not resonate with the emotions portrayed, which is not necessarily a bad thing, and I hate to give a point off for it. Melodically it's not too interesting, it's just 80s inspired pop. At the end of the day this is a 4/5 album, I'd be confident in saying between 7.5 and 8/10 on a 10 point scale. It's objectively good, for some people this will be fantastic, for others it'll be fine. Still for others this will be awful, and they'll rate it extremely low for no real reason aside from being closeted iconoclasts who will argue that they are not in fact iconoclasts, but "enlightened". Get a life. 4/5.
Really enjoyed this - reminds me of year 12!
Insanely catchy and enjoyable pop music. About 10 years late to the party, but damn 'Blank Space' is a killer track.
come on now .. this is peak modern pop
Good record
Having a teen girl and a pre-teen girl when this album came out means that I heard the album a LOT. And the previous albums, and the future albums. So I know the songs. But one thing that always struck me about Taylor Swift was how she stands up for herself, without becoming a terrible person. She charted her own path and has enjoyed huge success in doing so. And with each new sound, she never went off the rails as so many young female artists have. She was, and is, someone that I didn't mind my daughters listening to, singing along with, and looking up to. Granted, a lot of songs have dealt with more mature themes as she (and they) have grown up, but I'm not a total curmudgeon. One note though: Rather than this album as originally recorded, I queued up 2023's "1989 - Taylor's Version". Because fuck you, Scooter.
Undeniably excellent album.
Honestly didn’t hate it
Pretty much the only Taylor Swift album I have listened to. It has fun bops and is real reminiscent of 2014, a fun time in my life.
Sooooo many bangers wtf
First time listening to Taylor on purpose but I have definitely heard all the tracks before. 3.8 stars
When 1989 came out, I wanted to hate it. I remember when Taylor’s first album came out. Back when she was a teenager (so was I). Back when she was country. I was all like, “I hate country. I hate Taylor Swift.” I felt the same about the other 3 albums. But then 1989 came out. I was ready to be like “I hate country. I hate Taylor Swift.” But then I heard “Shake It Off” for the first time, and I was like 😡…🎷🌝 It’s not a perfect album, but the great songs are great and the hits hit hard. Pretty fun overall. But it’s not as good as Folklore.
If one wants to chart the moment Taylor Swift morphed from omnipresent country princess to omnipresent pop behemoth, look no further. 1989 was the denouement of an ongoing shift in Taylor's upward trajectory, where she reached the peak of her powers in the first decade of her career. Of course, given what has happened since, there was little and lots to know in regards to where she'd head but none of that would have been possible had she not made the full splash as opposed to dipping her toe in the water. Favorites: Welcome to New York, Blank Space, Style, Out of the Woods, I Wish You Would, Wildest Dreams, This Love.
I know more songs from this album than I want to admit.
A lot of fun catchy pop music, that despite being about break ups a lot of the time, was pretty fun
I have to hold my tounge and say it is a very well produced album songs vary a lot for being pop and tons of singles all diferent styles so that shows me versatility as an artist. Not bad Im not a swifty thibgy but have always respected he songwriting and her as an artists not my cup of tea cause I dont like pop but couldnt get away from this on the radio so kond of was fed up but as an album in order its great story telling and I have to objectively give it 4/5 as much as I would love to have given it a 1 because I heard shake it up a billion times
Yaaaaay I’m listening to TV tho
Been on a Taylor-break since last year’s Tortured Trash Can Debacle, and I thought maybe I just wasn’t that into her music anymore in general, but I was wrong. Just loved this album as much as I always have. HOWEVER: ‘Welcome to New York’ is still terrible and I hate it so much; I don’t understand how ‘How You Get the Girl’ made the cut, while ‘New Romantics’ didn’t; and, if for some reason you felt the need to listen to the Taylor’s Version of this instead of the original, I encourage you to stick to the original.
3.5/5
I'm not the biggest pop fan, but I unironically think this is a really good album. A lot of pop music for me is sort of style over substance, and while I don't always find Taylor's lyrics that relatable, I think she's a solid songwriter with a knack for crafting catchy melodies. I think the first 9 tracks on this are all good songs, and think there's quite a few highlights, including "Blank Space", "Style", "Out of the Woods", and "I Wish You Would". I think it kind of fizzles out at the end though. 4 stars.
4.5
Absolutely perfect indie crossover for Tay Tay. Not country like her earlier stuff, nor tacky and cringe like Reputation or totally snoozy like her Folksnore albums or as bad as her most recent stuff. Just the perfect Tay Tay Goldilocks zone. (although she does come close to matching it with a certain album called 1989 Taylor’s Version). You have a clutch of songs that feel completely sensational. From the widescreen allure of Welcome To New York, pop juggernauts of Blank Space and Shake It Off plus Style which totally smokes in a neon lit 80s way. It’s not too long at 13 songs and 48 minutes but the weaker half definitely pales massively to all the best stuff. But the best songs and overall production and vibes are so good and the vocals so vivaceous. A 2010s Thriller with some filler.
My era
Honest to god I've been deliberating this for a week and to the surprise of everyone but especially me, I've decided to challenge my prejudices and be positive even if I find this album slightly to moderately annoying, shallow, overproduced, american etc, the girl can make a catchy tune dammit. Also I've been under constant attack by extremely mid albums recently which in turn has caused my average rating to fall and make me look like a hater. Which I am, but shhh don't tell anyone!
1989 is full of melodic pop bangers, it can’t be denied. Having two 9 year daughters, I’ve been over exposed to her, so listening to it today didn’t really hit. But she is the undeniable Queen of Pop. She’s not The Beatles, but she might be Michael Jackson 8.6/10
I am pleasantly surprised! I was totally prepared to give this two stars but it refused to allow me to hate it.
Brilliant slice of pop.
Very nostalgic, I remember being a kid listening to this. Not as big on pop now, and I barely listen to her. Still solid. I wasn't planning on ranking this so high but I can't help it. So many catchy hits that I somehow remember every word to even though its been years since I heard them. Highlights: Blank Space Shake It Off Bad Blood
Love me some T Swift but I hear it so much she doesn’t get my 5.
Can’t deny she’s a hitmaker
Sorry Kyle, it's good
Didn’t disappoint. Many enjoyable tracks, really liked her musicality and the lyrics. Whilst I appreciate her candid approach to write about experiences of love and breakups, juxtaposing all her songs together just felt cringe. ‘Oh what are you up to now, girl?’ On their own they are catchy and I would listen to them on repeat, but collectively they are less than their sum. Is a TS concert going to be like a coaster ride of her love stories?
Not my favorite Taylor Swift album and maybe a few fillers here, but overall, 1989 really demonstrates what Taylor Swift does best. Her songwriting that transports you to a specific moment in time, with all the textures and people and places. Her mastery of creating a bridge that stays in your head and shapes the trajectory of the entire song. Her NGAF dorkiness that just makes you want to let your freak flag and cheesiness come out (cue: Shake It Off). Giving this a 4. No haters allowed.
It's too cloying for my taste, but these songs are just undeniably great
love that this list keeps surprising me with artists I’ve never come across before
Never thought I would say this about a Taylor Swift album but... I liked it, it was enjoyable.
Super nostalgic. Love blank space
some really awesome timeless songs. hits on hits. i see the o rod and taylor swift comparisons here and all I'll say is o rod has the better voice soz
I’ve tried to get into Taylor Swift in the past. I’ve listened to most of her albums and will put it on when comes out. I’m not sure I like her music? But this has some great songs on it, and I have nothing against her or people who like her music. Giving this another listen, I’d say it is actually really good. The hit songs are hits for a reason. The other songs are also good, but the last few songs lose me. Not a 5 album, and I still don’t think this music is my thing, but I can’t deny it good. The songs are well written, produced, and performed.
Surprisingly good, appreciate all the fuss a little...
It is an undeniably fun album. Listen to both the original and Taylor's version. I am not musically inclined enough to articulate the difference, but I did like Taylor's Version better as long as you limited to the original track list.
Not much of a pop fan, but I admire TS as a successful musician and strong woman who has charted her own path and serves as a great role model for her fans. This is well-done pop that mostly avoids the genre's predilection for bombast and overproduction (with the possible exception of 'I Wish You Would"). "Shake It Off" and "Bad Blood" are genuine bangers, while the anthemic "I Know Places" is infused with doomed romance. Listening to the "Taylor's Version" of this release now as my Gen X curiosity has been piqued.
Fantastic album with plenty of feel good tracks. Shake It Off obviously being the standout hit, but plenty of other decent songs like Wildest Dreams and How You Get the Girl. A bop of an album
Went with Taylor’s Version so there’s more tracks to rate… And it’s “ Poptastic Mate, not half!”
Bubblegum pop for the new generation. Like its predecessor, it makes you feel good and is easy to sing along to. The crescendo to every song creates endorphins, but it is as formulaic as those simple 50s/60s tunes.
Taylor Swift’s 1989 is her first non-country album and is a testament to her remarkable talent, dedication, and ability to create anthems that resonate with millions. 1989 has a few catchy quintessential Swift songs with hooks that we won't forget any time soon. While some critics call it formulaic, it’s clear that Swift is more than just a pop star; she’s an artist who knows how to connect with her audience in a way few can. Dismissing her fans as ‘sheep’ is another way to invalidate the opinions of teenage girls who see something real in her music. The extra half-star is for her influence on modern music history and how she’s shaped the pop landscape.
An enjoyable pop album.
Better than I remembered.
Had heard songs on this before but never the whole thing, it's such a banger of a pop album. Enjoyed every track but maybe Bad Blood and Clean.
I'm reviewing the original version of 1989 (not Taylor's rerecording), since that was the work that was listed here. But I would recommend that people purchase and stream the latter—at the end of the day, artists are more important than labels (even extremely wealthy artists). It's hard, without multiple decades of perspective, to review an album that generated multiple singles which received near-constant airplay. When you're old, pop music is the background music of the most mundane moments in your life. As a man in middle age, I can't hear these songs without imagining specific interactions that I had in the grocery store or at the gym (I set what is certain to stand as my lifetime deadlift PR to "Blank Space"). But when you're young? It's a totally different game! I can't imagine how people born between, say, 1994 and 2002 must feel about this record; even if you hate it, a record this big becomes a part of your life. Frankly, I wish more people understood this about their own taste in music (I'm looking at you, Boomers). So here's a four star rating that should be taken with a tablespoon of salt. To my ear, Carly Rae Jepsen's Emotion is the more interesting mid-teens pop record, but that album wouldn't have come to be if not for Swift's work. Let's see how people talk about it in ten years.
Today, Donald Trump weasled his way into his second term. If receiving this album was not an attempt by the apps creator to ruffle some MAGA feathers, then this is quite a funny coincidence. Imagine being so famous, that a good portion of conservatives get upset when you break the silence of your political convictions. They get so upset that a portion of those conservatives make up a ton of obvious lies about you, like oh, you know, being a puppet of Joe Biden, eventually give birth to the anti-Christ, and start World War III. I wish I was making this stuff up... Now, onto the album. I'll admit, this is not typically my thing, but honestly, this is a solid album. It's bubblegum with a capital B, and maybe the lyrical content doesn't seem very deep, but Taylor is a good songwriter and can write a hook. I also got oddly emotional with 'This Love'. This is a sleek and well executed album delivered by a strong, independent woman. And that is what scares the MAGA cult.
I'm not a huge Taylor Swift fan, by this has always been my favourite album of hers. Smooth poppy tunes, fun choruses and great lyrics to sing along to.
Good album, culturally significant. Not my cup of tea.
A lot of hits that I knew on this one
whew so much that I could say about this one...the production is crisp as hell, the songs are catchy, this is basically the textbook example of how to write a great pop album in the 21st century. HOWEVER, i think this album tends to get a similar treatment to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, in that it is generally seen by mainstream music criticism to be her best work even though I don't think the entire album as a unit is her strongest work. still, it's impossible to deny its lasting cultural impact, and this was the album that brought Swift into a whole new level of stardom. people may gripe about my comparison of Swift to the Beatles, but when you speak about cultural impact and influence on pop music and culture at large...there really is no one else on that same level. Taylor Swift is the millennial Paul McCartney. that's not me speaking as a fan of either Taylor or Paul, that's just an observable fact. it's also interesting to remember things like the whole streaming debate and to compare that to the Beatles also not being on streaming services for many years. of course, it's irrelevant at this point in time (money wins out always sadly) but it also shows you how much has changed in the music industry and landscape over the past 10 years.
It was ok, made better as I knew some songs on it.
This album in my generation is revered and i can see why. The first three songs are such a dramatic and well done introduction to Swift as a pop music icon. I love Welcome to New York for how punchy it is, it cuts through whatever moment your in. Blank Space and Style are pop writing 101. They do it so well, there’s nothing but catchy melody's and well structured bridges. Infact Blank Space is my favourite Swift bridge, it’s just so good. The next two songs are great but they feel a bit further from her, and i’m aware i’m saying that as someone who doesn’t know her at all. I didn’t like either of them completely but it wasn't hard to listen to them. Then we hit Shake It Off, and as much as I want to say I hate it, I don’t. Yes, it has been overplayed to death, but does everyone still sing a long?! of course we do. I Wish is one I enjoyed the writing the most, over the melody. Then you hit another two absolutely brilliant pop anthems, Bad Blood and Wildest dreams. Simply put they are masterpieces of pop for sure, not overall genius, maybe close though. How You Get is a great storytelling piece, what she does best. This Love and I Know Places are slightly forgettable to me, but not bad. Clean I again love the narrative, lovely poetic way to end an album of bangers.
I'd forgotten how good Taylor Swift's lyrics are. I really enjoyed this while album. Some of her best are on it.
not taylors version.... good though
One of her best
Guilty pleasure. Honestly she’s brilliant. I don’t care how cliché it all is. It’s massively popular for a reason and I can’t help but the let the little girl in me have an absolute ball of a time whenever I listen to Taylor Swift, this is one of her albums that has very few songs I got bored of. Out of the woods and I Wish You Would get abit repetitive. But it’s not the end of the world is it, especially when you rack up bangers like Blank Space, Shake It Off, Bad Blood. Nonsense typical formulaic pop music. 9/10
8/10. Some classics and a fun album.
This is the first time I've knowingly listened to Taylor Swift and as far as pop albums go yeah it's a good pop album but it's just not music written for me. But i can'tdeny that its good.
Admission- I’m okay with Taylor Swift. I expect it’s an ouroboros kind of thing, where she’s gone so far around the love-hater cycle that we’re back to (something less than, but something like) love. It’s confection, but I like me sweets, so ‘why not’ is my play here. 3.5 turns to 4
Undeniable pop greatness whether you like it or not
Look, I’m not a fan. The attitude and mystique are deeply irritating. On pure merit alone, however, this is a catchy, thoughtful, durned good pop album, far and away her best.
Beyonce did in deed had one of the best music videos of all time. Ngl this album is way better than i thought. Didn't knew so many of her Bangers are on the same album stacked. Just Crazy and al the other songs holding to a certain LvL and i cant go under 4 Stars. Its not my jam and the lyrics are obviously simple but still effective. Many Throwbacks from Vine, Musical.ly etc. from this era... i feel old rn lmaooo
Aga's not a fan but I am.
4.0
The highs are pretty damn high, but the lows (mostly Welcome to New York) bring this down a bit
Can’t argue with the ear wormy hits of this album. The filler doesn’t match and gets a little sluggish
It is very good. However it cannot be a 5*, there is nothing to grab you emotionally. I am just not vested in it.
Overtly poppy With solid song writing chops And eighties highlights
Catchy poppy
It has arguably the worst opening track of an album I've ever heard. And then goes on to be a decent pop album? It's full of hits. It's non offensive nice pop music. Not worth the cult. But perfectly enjoyable starting from track 2.
As Taylor’s first full foray into pop music, this is surprisingly great. She’s always been a talented songwriter but the synth-pop aesthetics suit her more than the twangy guitars. “Bad Blood” is sorely missing Kendrick, though.
While tangentially familiar with her entire catalog (call it osmosis — I live with an avowed Swiftie), I'd say this is easily my favorite TS album, based on what I know. I like the fact that this is not trying to be anything more than a solid pop-anthem album, and from that perspective, it hits its mark. "Shake It Off" stands as the pinnacle in that regard, for me anyway, though I think my favorite tune might be "I Know Places," which I may not have ever actively heard before. I may never be a legitimate part of the Taylor Army, but I agree, we all needed to at least hear this one to get acquainted with the queen of the aughts.
Surpsingly catchy
I had mostly missed Taylor Swift until last year or so, and only got the early songs via unavoidable cultural osmosis. I'm really glad I had the weekend to listen to this a couple times.
Frankly, Taylor Swift is not an interesting artist. She makes radio pop, has more money than god, and employs an army of rabid fangirls to maim anyone who says a bad word about her. That being said, she cooked with this one. I have listened to all of her albums (so I could decide if I wanted to hate), and this one is by far one of the standouts. Taylor Swift has made some awful, awful music. She has also made some really fantastic, catchy, and (for someone of my young age) nostalgic music that really is fun to listen to. I am no Swiftie, but I do like good music, so I have to be objective and give her props on this one.
I mean I am not a huge Swift fan but this is all killer no filler
One can see how the Taylor Industrial Complex came to be after this one – which is high-gloss and precision-engineered, but a bit soulless and as cynical as necessary to achieve massive commercial scale. There's no denying a few of the first-rate cuts (and their mad-infectious hooks) – “Welcome to New York,” "Style," “Shake It Off." One generally prefers Ryan's version, if only showing how they might work in leaner, quieter settings. This is overdone, as with much of Taylor's world, but still ... rounding up if only from one's daughter's love.
I do like this album... some earworms, and others have a great synthwave sound that I enjoy.
Well it’s TS so the execution and production you know will be perfect. And she has a great voice!
This album is an anomaly for me. I’m not that much of a Taylor Swift fan. I find her lyrics far too over praised and her music lacks a dynamism that appears in stuff from her peers. And yet I think this is a solid pop record. There’s some good bangers on it. The only one of her albums I’d ever come back to and listen in full. 4/5
General impression: it’s good and I hate that Detailed review: I just don’t like Taylor Swift, and I like her less as time goes on. But this album came out at a particular time in my life - mid-20s - and I can’t help but feel nostalgic for that time when I listen to 1989. The production is perfectly clear and crisp, and some of the songs on here — “Welcome to New York,” “Out of the Woods,” “Wildest Dreams” — are total hits. I have to be fair. This album is pretty great. If only Taylor Swift would go back to paying this much attention to her songcraft, instead of her “lore” and fanbase… Oh and one more thing: I listened to “New Romantics” for the first time this listen. What a banger. Should’ve been on the main album. Deeper thoughts (context): There’s a “Taylor’s Version” of this that I don’t care to even check out. Score: 3.6 (4) Number of albums left to review: 964 Number of albums from the list I’d consider “must-listens”: 21 (including this album) (and only because you can’t simply ignore Taylor Swift, and if you’re going to listen to her at all this is the album) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 16
Had never listened to a Taylor Swift album before this. I'm impressed...a master class in pop music.
It surprised me at how good this turned out to be, even if it coasted toward the end. Very catchy tunes.
People love this and they’re not wrong
I remember hating on Taylor Swift when I was younger, but I don't think I heard anything beyond "Shake it off" (still don't like that one) and a couple other hits. It turns out that beyond the radio/TJ Maxx tracks there are actually some catchy songs in her discography.
A pretty solid pop album. Still don't know how this beat To Pimp a Butterfly at the 2016 grammys
I'll admit it—Taylor Swift is one of my guilty pleasures. Say what you want about her being overexposed or polarizing, but the woman’s got talent. She writes her own songs, sings them, plays instruments, produces the tracks, and actually performs. That alone sets her apart in a pop scene where half the charts are just features and samples. 1989 was a big shift for her, and looking back, it still holds up surprisingly well. It’s polished but personal, catchy without feeling hollow. Hard to believe it's already been a decade since this one dropped, but it doesn’t sound dated. Solid album from a legit artist.
A talented musician producing catchy tunes. Is it my cup of tea, not really, but I can see why it is so popular. On the one hand, a powerful female role model: successful and talented, however the subject matter of many of the songs paints her as the victim and kinda glamourises emotional pain. that's not so good. Anyway, Shake it Off is a banger. Mmm mmm.
I will admit, I came into this album wanting to hate it but by the end I kind of loved it. It is pop. But it’s good.
cracking pop album
Conventional, competent, catchy 3.65
Definitely one of the best pop albums of this century. Almost every song on this album was a hit and inescapable and for a reason. The synth orchestra is very epic and the production quality is incredible
I'm more of a Folklore/Evermore fan, but 1989 is a very strong pop album. It has some great bops on it - Style, Wildest Dreams, New Romantics. Taylor's voice was still developing on this album though, and hadn't reached some of the depth she has later.
got weaker towards the end and i still think shake it off is a miserably annoying song but this REALLY surprised me tbh
I am not am fan and don't understand the hype but have to admit that this is a good album.
Wusste gar nicht das die so gute Lieder macht. Bin jetzt Swifty!
Name a better pop artist in the last 15-20 years. You can't. Yes, her fans can be annoying. And the instrumentation on this album could be better (less drum machines and synths please), but the tunes themselves are great. They're catchy, and they're fun -- just what great pop music should be! On a scale of 1-10, I would give this a 9, so converting to a 5-star scale, I have to choose to round up or down. I don't think this belongs with the likes of Thriller (though both albums are very good pop), so I'm rounding down. (For the record, some of my favorite artists are Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, and The Cure, so I'm no Swiftie.)
Poppy and fresh. Fun album and totally see why she is so popular. A change up album from my normal go to and happily listened to it.
I'm not really into pop music, but I get the popularity of Taylor Swift. These were catchy, fun tunes with a singer you can understand.
I'm not a big Taylor Swift fan in general. I enjoyed her two mostly acoustic albums released during COVID lockdown. But, this album is solid. Her last decent pop-based album, IMO.
4
It's got some banners and is a solid album. Some great turns of phrase, too. I really don't like this style of music, not a fan of singer-songwriter confessional tunes, but it's still a 4 out of 5.
First Taylor Swift album I've ever listened too and I was impressed. She obviously has great musical talent and this album is a good listen for start to finish.
I have never listened to this album and don’t listen to swift regularly at all but I knew about half of the songs on this album… I think that says enough?? All the hits on here with some good songs covered up by those hits. Wouldn’t listen much again personally but can’t deny the musical & lyrical talent
Hard to rate when this isn't something you would normally listen to. I lean towards the songs here that are simpler without the big production sound. Had to listen a second time(which I don't often do!) to dive more into the lyrics. I can definitely see why so many people can relate to her writing and feel she is the voice of a generation. Wildest Dreams was probably my favorite because it made me think of someone or something that would be meaningful to experience and love.
A very classic Taylor album. Hard to critique but I'd say it could be shorter. Just give us the bangers and leave the other songs for other albums.
This is a great album. I remember when it was coming out she would release videos for each song. One per day. They were great then and are great now. I am not sure it's 5 stars worthy yet just from a "timeless" standpoint, but all of these songs are hits in my opinion.
- classic taylor swift album - lots of familiar and catchy songs from hs - my music taste is a lot more aligned w/ these types of pop-y songs
Bangers bangers bangers some great tunes throughout, some absolute classics, some not so much and not so stand-out but still a lot of talent packed into one album.
Pop perfection - there’s not a song on this that couldn’t be released as a chart single. You may not be a fan of Taylor Swift but you can’t deny that she’s a massive talent and stands head and shoulders above the multitude of copycat artists that have appeared since this album.
Album for the young and inexperienced when it comes to love and relationships. Growing up while navigating each other and the feelings that at some point will fuck us up.
I've never heard of this artist, it's nice that this list occasionally features obscure artists and gives them a new audience. I'm kidding, of course. I have a 6 year old daughter who is already a big fan of the most famous person in the world. She can largely thank 1989 for that, which launched Taylor from superstardom to super-duper-pooper-stuper-stardom. Swift was already a household name when it was released, and Red certainly tipped the country-pop balance way in the pop direction, but 1989 is when she became inescapable and a full-fledged pop megastar. Taken at surface level, 1989 is a pretty good pop record. There are hooks after hooks and earworms after earworms: it's catchy. Even though I've heard it front to back many times, I still was surprised by a couple of tracks that I've never paid much attention to, especially Wildest Dreams which is a really good song. It has it's massive hits of course. At the time of this writing Blank Space, Style, and Shake It Off all have over 1 billion plays on Spotify; for context there are only 477 songs that have crossed this milestone on Spotify, which features over 100 million songs in its catalog. Wildest Dreams sits at 995 million at this moment, so it will join this club soon too. The scale of her appeal is unbelievable: she's probably the biggest songwriter of all time in terms of sheer popularity. Is it good though? I think it's a solid record, certainly not perfect. Some moments are, well, annoying to me (the chorus of Out Of The Woods, the chuckle after "I go on too many dates", the entirety of I Know Places). I'm far from sold on Jack Antonoff as a producer - he's wildly successful but there's something about his records that feels off to me, and I'm not technically educated enough in music production to know exactly what it is. I know that I greatly prefer Swift's more recent work with Aaron Dessner from The National. Her songs produced by him sound fuller and more natural to me. That said, as a pop songwriter Taylor is pretty fantastic. She's not writing cryptic Dylanesque ballads or Springsteenian rompers, she writes direct insights into the joys, hardships, and emotions that result from romantic relationships. It's not everyone's cup of tea (what is??) but her writing is incredibly effective at this and obviously resonates with millions (billions?) of people. Taylor is a world class arranger of her songs and plays well. If her singing voice isn't technically the best in the world, it doesn't have to be and it is very effective at delivering these songs. If Swift fatigue is hitting you hard, I get it. But there could be worse role models for my 6 year old and Taylor has her interested in music at a young age, and I'm here for anyone who demonstrates to my daughter that anything is possible.
A classic for the ages
I’ve never listened to her music. It’s not my genre. It’s hard to avoid, but I’ve never actually sat and listened to it before this project. One earlier album didn’t impress me, but this one is different. I get it. I get the hype. I was surprised to know, and like, most of these songs; and the ones I didn’t know I liked equally well. She’s done well for herself and it’s not just because she puts on a good show. The music here is quality and the lyrics are great. I debated long and hard on the score, even listening to the album all the way through three times, but I think it is worthy of the four stars.
I think middle aged men like me are not supposed to like Taylor Swift, but honestly, this album was awesome! There are some real bangers (mostly her well known songs such as Bad Blood, Shake It Off and Blank Space), which are super catchy, have great harmonies, and I enjoy the lyrics. A few of the non-single songs were a little forgettable, but overall still a fantastic album I’ll come back to and listen to again.
4/5
I understand that she's a bit of a divisive artist, but I don't really know why. That aside, i think this is the epitome of 2010's pop, atleast the female led side. Does it work for me? The upbeat songs I definitely like, to a point. But the others fail to hit me. Lyrics are sometimes a bit cringy, but it's (ultra-)mainstream pop so it comes with the territory. I'm floating between a 3 and a 4 but it being a cultural behemoth, I'll grant it a 4.
Bon p'tit taylor. Je l'aime, même si elle polue avec son avion.
multiple tracks that i liked
Ah the stench of madeleines..
Fantastic pop album. Not much else to it but damn there’s so many catchy moments on here
I LOVE me some Taylor…but I ain’t nearly a Swiftie. With modern fandom, the distinction is important, as young folks with some prodding from social media have nearly weaponized being a superfan. Just look at the 15+ vinyl versions she’s released of her latest, and (some) fans will buy Every. Single. Version, bless their broke and easily manipulated selves. To clarify; I’m not hating; I’ll buy damn near everything for a few of my fav artists; it’s part of the fan journey. Wifey and I were part of that infamous Ticketmaster debacle trying to get original, list price tickets to the Eras tour, but after a full day of trying to make the website work we struck out, only getting lucky on the revised “2nd chance” sale months later. The show was stunning; she’s an amazing entertainer and I think an under appreciated songwriter. And don’t get me started on the obvious music industry misogyny that is sadly a well-deserved legacy she’s suffered through. But I like to think of myself as a music fan not a Swiftie, though I’m married to one. Here’s where I disagree with modern (young?) Tay-Tay fans as she’s ridden the wave of her Eras success to global domination, easily the biggest star of today. But she’s not NEARLY as famous as Michael Jackson or The Beatles were back in their primes, no matter how many Swifties making YouTube videos claiming she’s now the biggest artist of all time. Just saying, so don’t kill the messenger (Swifties can get feral), but a Redditor distilled it well: “They were playing MJ in the hood… they ain’t doing that on a large scale with Taylor.” I tend to agree: African Pygmies with no exposure to the outside world STILL somehow know some of MJ’s music (it’s true; check YouTube). To me (and let’s face it, albums sales has little to do with power of music (but hey, it’s FUN to have these lighthearted debates in good faith), but the list of mega famous artists in my mind is deliciously short: Elvis, The Beatles, MJ… and that’s it for multiracial, multicultural, multigenerational, multi-EVERYTHING worldwide global fame. Taylor’s clearly the biggest star of today, but she ain’t floating at the stratospheric level of her named predecessors. Lots of reasons for that, mostly cultural and technical, but there’s no hate in that perspective Swifties…❤️❤️❤️ Having said all of that, I love this rush to pop princess superstardom from the ashes of her country roots; it’s a solid release! I give it a solid four. But it ain’t my fav of hers. That story is for another day and involves woodsy terrain, fireplaces, intimate interpersonal conversations, lots of self-reflection, and a worldwide pandemic sprinkled on top…
I completely respect her business acumen and musicianship. Some tunes are catchy and maybe this is an album you have to hear several times to love, but I don’t really get the appeal.
4 stars because it’s Taylor’s Version
Was actually good. I get it now. I too want to imagine the perfect life with the perfect person. Anyway this was like a 7/10 kinda generic.
I know she's still insanely popular, but this was her peak for me. I haven't really kept up with her music as much since this one. She's good at writing simple but catchy sad girl love songs.
Polished and poppy, this album is fun! Full of nostalgia feels and a sense of youthful energy. The beats are crisp, the melodies infectious, and the lyrics capture that feeling of chasing after something just out of reach.
This album came out my freshman year of college and man does it win some nostalgia points. It is a solid pop album. Shake It Off and How You Get Girl are my only skips. I Wish You Would, Wildest Dreams, Clean, Style, I Know Places, and Blank Space are all bangers. If this were the deluxe album, it would have five stars for me (Wonderland and You Are In Love are some of my favorites of Swizzles)
Hard to fault Taylor Swift to be honest - this album has everything a pop album needs executed very effectively and that's probably her best quality, being able to always do what she does and do it well.
I've been consistently rating most "bubblegum pop icon" albums (Britney Spears, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera) 2 stars (with 1 star exceptions), finding them overproduced, vapid, and soulless. While I never listened to her much, apart from a couple of enjoyable karaoke songs, Taylor Swift doesn't fit into the same category. I'm not exactly a fan of her music. But it's easy to see that it does in fact have depth, meaning, and soul. Her popularity seems hard-earned and well-deserved. An enjoyable album, even for someone like me, who's absolutely clueless about modern pop music and has close to zero interest in it.
Well, it’s catchy. Kind of shallow, but I get why it’s popular.
I figured more TSwift was coming (and I'm sure there's more still to come), but it's been awhile since evermore was album #2 on here. This was the one where she decided she wasn't a country singer anymore, and it was unavoidable background noise pretty much throughout my college years. I'd say I'm somewhat indifferent about Taylor Swift overall, and her hype has only grown in the last year since I listened to evermore. I'll try to be balanced here. Starting with the positives. This album has quite a few of her most recognizable songs ("Blank Space", "Style", "Shake It Off", "Bad Blood", "Wildest Dreams"). It's a bit hard to be overly critical of an album that has so many hits (regardless of how deserving they are). She really went for the '80s-inspired synth-pop sound on this one, and I can kind of respect it. '80s synth-pop is far from my favorite genre, but she at least avoided the rap-pop thing that was huge in the early 2010s, so this at least sounds fairly timeless. It also has some pretty objectively catchy sounds, so there's that. Now the negatives. While a lot of the songs are so recognizable, I'm not convinced that many of them are really great. I think "Wildest Dreams" does a great job of showcasing her voice with a catchy pop hook, but even some of the better known songs just fall a little flat to me ("Bad Blood" was basically the soundtrack to my teaching summer, but it's honestly a little underwhelming to me, and I find "Shake It Off" a little mediocre too). There's also quite a bit of filler on this album, ranging from generic and mediocre to a bit annoying. Also, almost every song on here comes in under 4 minutes, but for some reason they consistently feel like they drag on a bit to me, in a way that makes them feel longer than they are. I don't know what to give this, it's either a 3 or a 4. On one hand I would basically never actively hit play on this while listening to music on my own. On the other hand, it's reasonably catchy and just has such a massive cultural impact, it's hard to not be a little nostalgic since it was so unavoidable for a few years. I guess I'll be nice. Favorite song: Wildest Dreams Other: Welcome To New York, Blank Space, Style, Shake It Off, Bad Blood, This Love, I Know Places 8/2/24
Certified hood classic. Taylor Swift is an absolute chart hit machine - there are so many huge songs in this album and you can see why. Banger after banger. The only problem is that her music is incredibly one-dimensional. After a few tracks I was ready to score this album very highly, but by the end, the lack of development or nuance had me getting a bit bored. Nonetheless, this is a top quality pop record that still sounds fresh a decade on. So many great singalong songs. Lyrically it’s okay but she’s cracked the code of writing songs that a VAST number of people can relate to, and she writes all her own stuff. Taylor Swift does one thing and she does it well. A bit like AC/DC… bet that’s a comparison you didn’t expect to read today! Well earned 4 stars. Haters gonna hate.
"Shut up. That's a perfect song," Brain
best pop record since like a virgin
Erinomaista modernia poppia. Monta aika tunnelmallista kappaletta. Tykkäsin myös monen kappaleen tuotannosta. Moni kappale tietenkin tuttuja vaikka nimi ei olisi. Parhaat: Blank Space, Style, This Love, Clean
I guess maybe I'm a swiftie? Idk I thought it was pretty good. Dragged on a bit at the end but I enjoyed most of the songs.
75/100
This album really does slap, but let's just not tell Gen Z I said so
7/10. It is a solid album with a lot of catchy hits. :)
There’s two ways you can look at this project - either as a list of [possibly among] the 1001 greatest albums of all time, or as a list of 1001 albums that are historically important in the development of a wide range of popular recorded music. From the latter perspective, few albums would be more worthy of inclusion to represent the 2010s than this. This was the moment one of the biggest country artists of the aughts became the biggest pop star of the 10s, the moment the metacommentary of Taylor Swift’s celebrity and personal lives became so central to her music in a way that in part helped her become the biggest pop star of this decade, the moment Jack Antonoff began his ascent to a superstar producer, the arguable moment the 'turbopop' sound that was so popular in the 00s/early 10s made its last stand before other styles came to dominate the charts in the years to come. But is it any good? I mean, kinda: there’s four songs on here I’d consider perfect, some that are still pretty good, a few that are pretty shit. (Sorry, “Welcome to New York” may be necessary as an introduction to Taylor’s stylistic shift but wow I fucking hate it still.) The production sounds a bit tinny to me at times. But the perfect songs still tend to win out when it comes to my opinion of this album. The opinions hardly matter though. 10 years after this album out, it’s still Taylor’s world and we’re all living in it.
Working at a youth residential psychiatric facility for 10 years between 2000-2010, I was often aware of what the youth was into at the time: Jonas Brothers, Twilight, Harry Potter, Fallout Boy, Captain Underpants, Pretty Ricky, and of course Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. I was impressed to hear that among all of the manufactured music out there, Taylor wrote (or co-wrote) her own songs. I even once caught the video for "You Belong To Me" and thought the storyline was pretty clever. I'd hear more and more pop songs of hers on the radio over the years, surprised she was still winning awards for country music as this was clearly not country, but it was still catchy, though not aimed at my demographic. Of all the Taylor Swift albums out there, this is one I actually have a copy of. Like Harry Potter earlier, I figured I'd dive in and see what the fuss was all about and--like Harry Potter--I have to say I was thoroughly impressed. The production is top-notch, and though her lyrics are topically distant from me, they have a way of putting you right there with her as a co-pilot to her story. We can all relate, whether we've been there recently or not; there's something more-in-the-moment and more earnest about a 20-something Taylor Swift singing about modern dating than a 30-something Ben Gibbard singing about high school prom. Just like week I finished watching the Eras tour on Disney. In the first 5 minutes, I wondered why she didn't do a Super Bowl. And then immediately after that thought and for the remainder of the three-hour show, I saw that this was better than anything she could do at a Super Bowl. She really does give back to her fans and while she's no dancer, she doesn't try to be. She also single handedly boycotted Spotify until they paid all creators a better amount of money; no one else at the time or even now could have done that. I haven't picked up anything of hers since this one album, but I'm not against it. I liked every single I've heard since, and though I've never said it out loud, I guess I'm a Swiftie. Again, it's not made for me and my demographic, but I appreciate that she writes it, it's catchy, and the younger generations have something of substance to listen to amongst so much fluff and pomp. The singles here are good too, but let's not forget the awesome changes of beat and feel of "I Wish You Would," the excitement of exploring the center of the world in "Welcome To New York," and the getting caught up in one's own imagination and world-building in "Wildest Dreams." Too many good songs to list them all. Curious if this project will pull these studio versions out in time and replace them with the Taylor's Version re-releases.
Bangers
There are some good songs on here, even for a pop-swiftie hater. I’d give this a solid 7.5/10
So many bangers on this album. The Kendrick Lamar Bad Blood on the deluxe album is iconic
Fun, but I'm not sure if this counts as music, in the same way I'm not sure if MadDonalds qualifies as food.
I've been dreading this appearing. My fears were unfounded. Its a great pop record, relatively unpretentious and life must have been good for Tay Tay at the time. This is reflected by the hate dial being turned down towards ex boyfriends. Unlike the ghastly Folklore, can't really fault it.
By no means am I a Swiftie, (is that right? That’s what the kids call it?) but this was enjoyable. She might have an army behind her that makes sure every album a certain amount of money or marketing, but it works.
The last album before she started pumping out endless over-manufactured pop drivel. Still upset this album won AOTY over Kendrick Lamar's second album To Pimp a Butterfly
This is a hard one for me. Having gone to high school with Taylor and her not saying the nicest things about our high school, along with I’m sure a healthy dose of jealousy, has made me an anti-swiftie. But, objectively this is a great pop album. I’m a Jack a Todd fan and his fingers are all over this. It kills me, but this is a 4 star record.
This is Taylor Swift's first non country album. It has Blank Space and Shake it Off on it. Those are both bangers. Oddly enough, this album is solid. For teeny Bop pop that is. Better than I expected for sure. Favourite songs: Shake it Off, Blank Space, Style, All You Had to Do Was Stay, Welcome to New York, Clean Least favourite songs: Bad Blood 4/5
Good album. Great production. Style is actually my favourite song of 2013. Taylor sucks though lol
I was enjoying myself far too much for my liking. The imaginary scenarios were flying by the end of this, on a train ride full of newly colourful June flowers :)) I'll easily admit that the main reason I groan at Taylor Swift's name isn't because I hate her or her music - I feel fine about her. It's just that with her now astronomical reach, maybe only real lovers can keep up the enthusiasm. The same happened to me back with Ed Sheeran and One Direction already. But these are all classics. I never understood those who were mad at her leaving country behind. This is pop, and she does it well. Musically and lyrically not much for me to think about, but it still works irresistably. Probably my least favourite of the slew of songs named 'Bad Blood' from this time though - she really rhymed 'blood' with 'cut'?
If you live your life near a switched-on radio, one that plays some level of pop music, it is more than likely you have heard Taylor Swift's music. I am definitely familiar with her music, but I have never actually listened to a full album. I'm sure, to understand the importance of 1989, you would have to be familiar with her previous work - I can think of songs like "Love Story" for example - and this album seems to document her journey into a more processed approach to her music. That is not necessarily a bad thing, every song on this album could be a hit, all under the lens of modern music. Catchy track after catchy track this album really is an ear-worm. A masterpiece? Perhaps. I can see why fans of pop music love this album, If upbeat pop that iant quite bubblegum is your thing, '1989' is a must-listen.
me supreendi positivamente com ela
Good music from Taylor. Just not a big fan of her stuff
Solid album
As impossible as it may be, I'm going to try and separate this album from all the white noise and clamor around Swift that's reached a fever pitch in recent years. It's a great, finely-crafted pop album. She has better albums, but many of her best singles are here. "Style" is a perfect pop song. I do detest "Bad Blood", an underwritten, inert low-point on an otherwise vibrant album. I'm still mystified by it being a number-one hit almost 10 years later. "Shake It Off" has a great hook but I can't say that I like it. Taylor's Version has improved vocals and some songs have gotten a sonic facelift ("Out of the Woods" TV sounds fantastic, for example), but I have to concede that there is something about the youthful strain in her still-developing voice on the original, and that some of the TV tracks have lost some punch in the production. I need to stop writing about 1989. It's a great pop record and I wish the constant discourse around Swift would go away. It's exhausting. I'm tired. You're tired. We are all tired. Highlights: Blank Space, Style, Out of the Woods, Wildest Dreams, This Love, Clean
So, I understand that a lot of people like to hate on Taylor Swift, but I actually enjoyed this album. Will it be my go-to? Probably not, but there are a lot of catchy songs there.
A ton of catchy megahits, but the deep tracks are utterly indistinguishable from each other
I'm no swiftie, but this is music that I can listen to in the background.
Shoutout to my Taylor girlies
Better than I thought it would be
Taylor Swift is unbearable, but this album has a few ‘tolerable’ nostalgic bangers.
Not sure if I'm cheating by listening to 1989 TV but whatever. This isn't my favourite Taylor album (I'm a Reputation girlie) but this is still good. Yes, Taylor's music is really basic and formulaic but whatever. I still enjoy listening to all these tracks.
Candy sweet and squeaky clean. Like, almost too clean. I think a big part of most pop music today is that it doesn’t have to adhere to such tight production and mass-appeal standards (harry styles and a few others are exceptions though). Pulls from what was working in 2014 but doesn’t lean into it too hard. Hooks for days, but as with every pop album, it’s front-loaded.
Taylor Swift is legit. No denying she can’t write absolute bangers. However, as I listen to more of her… some of her lyrics don’t seem all that great. For her to be heralded as this amazing songwriter and writes her own stuff is fine… but it kinda doesn’t hold up when you hear something like “he’s so tall and handsome as hell” Shout out to Shake it Off, Bad Blood, Blank Space for being anthems in college. Welcome to New York is also a banger.
Love my girl t swift - album was mid as hell. Probs her most famous but these songs are giving solely radio except for my favourite song ofc: wildest dreams which is violently upping my ranking. As a newly formed swiftie I was happy.
Quintessential 2014 pop. Some of Taylor's most iconic tracks on here but it's really not my favourite of her albums. Incredible number of singles on it tho. Also I literally always forget "how you get the girl" is actually on this album and not just in the deluxe edition. Also sidenote, I have hated "welcome to New York" since day fckn 1. Highlights for this listen: Style, clean, out of the woods, and as always I KNOW PLACES
It's not my favorite Taylor Swift album but it holds up really well.
NOTE: I listened to Taylor's version. Fuck. I didn't think this "era" would be my thing, but fuck, it's really good.
At one point this was my favourite Taylor album. I’ve since come to like her more folk/country-tinged music but I am still quite fond of her pure pop turns. I love a lot of the storytelling and songwriting in this though I’ve grown a bit more cold on the instrumentation and production of this then I used to be.
I dont care for Taylor Swift one bit, but its easy to see why she's such a pop powerhouse. Several hits and a huge legacy and she's still going strong. Still like her country music better though.
Really solid pop album. Wildest Dreams is a great song!
Great Album! 4 stars
I really enjoyed this album when it came out
I LOVE TAY TAY!!!!!!11!!!
Was hoping to dislike it. But it is actually quite alright
Hesitant to like this album, due to the worlds obsession with Swift. Its crazy how economies can be affected by a a Taylor Swift concert. With that said, i really like this album, probably one of my favorite so far. Easy to listen to and very good production. Going to be honest and say that i didnt really pay attention to the lyrics, but did not hear anything that made me not wanna listen.
Its a great album. Does it deserve to be on this list? Not sure. Personally I think Red was a better album. I like Taylor, and this album sold well, but I think it is too soon to call this album one of the best albums in the world...
I find it impossible not think about how calculated this all is, like, 'ok we need a song that's going to go on a million treadmill workout jams playlists, we need a song to hit the 27-36 tequila & kombucha cousin demo, we need to perfectly tread the line of being racy enough to get tweens excited but tame enough their moms don't mind' - but that's just mega pop production, so its hard to begrudge her specifically for it, it's just annoying to realize you're in the '34-43 working on the computer rock uncle demo' and that they successfully hit you with a few. And she did! Some of these songs are catchy as hell and have some amazing anthemic hooks. There's some really cool atmospheric textural stuff and kind of euphoric blissful spacey production I really enjoyed. It's upbeat and energizing without being obnoxious, propulsive beats and plenty of changes. It's not meant to challenge the listener at all and doesn't, but just delivers pure pop straight to the veins. It's meant to be a throwback to 80s synth pop, but it sounds like she was just stealing all the drum machines and keyboards and producers from the 2008-2013 indie synth scene, the whole vibe of people LCD Soundsystem imitations - the best of that stuff is pretty good, and it's not a bad idea to rip it off to make yourself zeitgeisty and one of the era's biggest stars.
Man, this takes me back to college. You couldn't escape anything from this album back in late 2014. (Honestly, has anything changed in that regard nearly 10 years later?) This is when Taylor Swift fully embraced pop (but let's be honest, she's always been a pop artist) and I think it's safe to say that "1989" has Swift's largest hit per album ratio. The synth sounds are really noticeable all throughout, taking obvious influence from most of 80's pop. Very clean from a production standpoint too, but that's always a given with any T-Swift album nowadays. Among the best in the contemporary pop-sphere. Breakup and lovelorn-inspired pop music does get kind of tiring to hear on the radio as it's mostly overdone, but Swift sells it well (I think she knows a thing or two too). Most of the songs on "1989" are wistful and musing, rather than teetering on the edge of mopey or even vengeful (which is funny in this context considering her next album's theme after this one). As a result, everything just sounds...good. It's simply a fun and catchy listening experience and that's what you should expect from pop music, right?
It is what we all know it is. Some really influential tracks amidst it all. I know it doesn’t include the vault tracks. But maybe it should 😬
Probably my favorite of Taylor Swift's records. Not a masterclass of songwriting, but a certified pop megasmash for a reason.
Conheço as mais famosas mas o álbum inteiro é bem legal.
Extremely solid album with a bunch of huge hits. 4.
Just a great pop record
#4 Best: Wildest Dreams Worst: This Love
Love Taylor and this album is great!
Ok
Replace the singles with the bonus tracks and this is an easy 5
Electrifying.
I think I’d be fine if I never heard shake it off ever again, but the rest is really good.
An ok album
This was my favourite album for most of my teenage years, enough said. Favourite tracks: I Wish You Would and Wildest Dreams (They are both top tier music for me and need to be acknowledged).
The hits on this album have always been a tour de force of 2010's pop and still hold up after all these years. It's impossible to not sing along to blank space or bad blood. The sound is very grand on this album, even on the softer tracks. I think it really adds a nice feel. The production is great, but on some of the tracks on the back half feels a bit cookie cutter. I think after the highs of the first 2/3 the end of the album didn't hit me the same way and bored me a bit. Definitely one of the best pop albums of the 2010's. I don't listen to Taylor Swift outside of the radio but this is definitely one I'll come back to!
By coincidence, I was served this album the same day as Taylor Swift released her album "The Tortured Poets Department." She seems to many to be at the apex of her fame at the moment: her blockbuster Eras Tour, her chart-topping albums, her concert film, her political relevancy; even her boyfriend just won the Superbowl. It's hard to imagine anyone flying much higher than this. 1989 is a great example of how she reached these heights. These tracks were (and are) ubiquitous: I have never gone out of my way to listen to one of Swift's albums before, but I knew each song on this one. Far from the "Tortured Poets" she is currently invoking, this album displays her simple, often hollow lyrics and saccharine melodies. There's not a lot of substance here but dang it, it's still pretty fun. Favorite track: "Out of the Woods," just because I haven't heard it three thousand times on the radio.
Probably the TSwift album I align with the most. The New York song is annoying. The Style guitar line sounds like the opening riff from Eminence Front by The Who. Shake It Off is great (except for that weird rap break). Overall this album is great.
A really strong album that solidified Swift as one of the biggest pop stars in the world. A couple of songs are kind of cringe (Bad Blood and about half of Shake It Off) but Blank Space, Welcome to New York, Style, Out of the Woods and Wildest Dreams are all killer
What can I say about Taylor Swift that hasn't already been said. She's good at what she does and unlike many artist who perform the same genres of music, she has only gotten progressively better as her career has gone on. 1989 is a great pop album. The tracks when from new to iconic on a dime and several of them are going to be in the popular consciousness for years.
This is like a 4.6 for me. I wish you would is my fav. Style and stay are also bops. I think this could be a perfect album if shake it off weren’t on it. I think that song is stupid and kind of out of place on an otherwise great album.
good
Thoughts before listening: Taylor Swift has taken over my household. My wife is obsessed and Taylor is her go to when picking music. I like it for the most part, but I would never choose to listen since its just not the type of music I tend to gravitate to. However, as far as pop stars go Taylor is about as good as it gets. My favorite by her is the Folklore album, but 1984 has a ton of huge pop hits and is overall a very good album. I also love how much Taylor melts the worst people so she gets bonus points for that as well. Review: Yeah this is good. Its hard to deny just how catchy this album is. "Blank Space" and "Bad Blood" are my favorites hits with "Welcome to New York" and "Wish You Would" as my favorite deeper cuts. This is a 4-star album.
Enjoyed TSwift way more than I thought I would. Good album.
Such a relatable album (with the exception of Shake it off which is probably the most over played T Swift song)
To have another artist such as Ryan Adams making, instead of a cover of a song, a cover of the entire album, speaks greatly of this album. Without a doubt, it has marked a generation, and will live rent free in a lot of gen-z’s and millennials as well. I don’t consider personally a 5 star album, but I do recognize its influence and beautiful melodies.
Seems like everyone's giving this either a 1 or a 5. I'll go 4. It's a good listen.
First time listening, although given its popularity I probably recognised 6 or 7 tracks. I took the liberty of listening to Taylor's Version. I thought "Welcome to New York" was a particularly weak opener, both musically and lyrically. I'd also be quite happy to never hear "Shake it Off" again after it got overplayed to death a decade ago. Rest of the album was solid, I was genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed the back half of the album I was less familiar with, as well as the Vault tracks. Overall, while not exactly my cup of tea, I'd say this is a solid pop album with good production values that lives up to its reputation.
I was much more surprised by the sound scape than I thought I would be. There was a lot more smalle things in the songs that I found myself listening closely to. Also synth is always welcome.
