Reviews (page 6 of 14)
What a fantastic album. I can't believe all the influence CCR had when they were only around for 3 or 4 years.
this a vibe in Louisiana
I was not disappointed.
I don't know what it means to "choogle" but if Mr. Fogerty insists, I'm gonna keep on doing it. Just the kind of pure, no bullshit blues rock that is timeless.
My favorite of the CCR I've gotten so far. Very bluesy swamp rock that definitely works for me. It's wild that these boys were from California though. You weren't "Born on the Bayou" John!! You're from Berkeley!
Great bluesy rock that gets to another level with the vocals. Fogerty easily one of the best rock vocalists out there.
This is a good rock album with plenty of elements from Blues and Soul. A chill vibe, I can dig it. Enjoyed “Graveyard Train”, “Penthouse Pauper” and their cover of “Good Golly Miss Molly”. Will try some other albums.
We were 2 days away from having Ken Chutney & Creedence Clearwater Revival! Unfortunately one of Lens marriages broke down and I got stuck on a beach in Bali with him balling his eyes out! I missed the contract signing! What we got out the other end though was one of Len’s breakthrough songs ‘I Don’t Want Your Bitch Tits Back’ 3.7
not my favourite CCR album but still great!
banger after banger
Excellent songs, but there were a few that just didnt reach that quality.
Приятный альбом.
I enjoyed this - you know what's getting with CCR: bluesy, squelchy riffs and an album that's a good time. There's some cracking bass-lines on this too as well as John Fogerty's vocals which are always good Don't think it's quite 5*, there are a few misses (like Graveyard Train) that bring it down.
Whole lotta chooglin goin on here. Really good. Lots of fun. Properly rocking. Probably a 4.5. Can't quite give it a big fat 5 stars, though.
swamp rock. is this their best? could be
4, 5, 7
just ok in terms of ccr. i like their other albums better. this is too country for me and every song sounds the same. love ccr, not this album. just merp to me but still listenable for backhround msuic
CCR is always a great time! Banger of an album every time!
Solid, classic album
V. Good
I really liked this one. The songs are fun and it's always a pleasure listening to CCR.
Some fun southern rock; proud Mary is a great tune. Probably won’t be revisiting though
A classic
1st French hosp album 7/10
What a classic, have heard this one a couple of times before but was still a lot of fun to come back and listen to. Production is great and really captures the hazy swampy feel, the guitars are incredible the drums and bass are perfect and the additional instrumentation is great. The songwriting is pretty solid too, I think my main criticism is that some of the songs get a bit muddled in the middle and Graveyard Train is a tad too long/repetitive by the end. Born On The Bayou, Bootleg, Proud Mary and Keep On Chooglin’ are all top tier CCR tracks though and the album overall is pretty great. 4/5
Not my genre, not my sound, still CCR are the most listenable act among others
Ahead of its time , it’s funky catchy in parts and an easy listen in all the good ways . I think this would have been one of my fav albums if I was listening in 1969. 55 years or so later it holds up, it’s experimental in all the right ways , the instrumentals are fun and interesting and it holds up on replays
Solid CCR
It's dark and moody. Perfect.
Never let a style, look, or jam trick you. Outstanding jam record and stands the test of time.
This isn’t my favorite CCR album, but it’s still very good. John Fogerty’s unmistakable voice always has a way of making me feel nostalgic, and the band’s swampy rock sound is as timeless as ever. The original version of Proud Mary is an undeniable highlight, showcasing the songwriting and soulful energy that would go on to define so much of their music. Even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of their best work, it’s a solid album that’s hard not to enjoy. Score: 4/5
CCR getting their sound together. Not as innovative as the upcoming flurry (4 more albums in 2 years) just good solid, chunky music. The begining of Lean Clean & Bluesy
very traditional blues rock album; proud mary is undeniably one of the best songs ever made.
Had a lot going on today but I read the first few reviews for this album and I kinda agree with the consensus I got from those few. It’s a good, fun album. Definitely heard these songs growing up. I’m not blown away by it but I also don’t have any complaints.
Workhorses, these guys. 1969 would end up being a big year for CCR, as this was the first of three albums release by then. All quality too. Once again, they nail the southern swamp rock sound despite being from Cali. Using their blues influence really helps in capturing that sound, creating influential and iconic hits such as "Born on the Bayou" and "Proud Mary". There's also an interesting cover of Little Richard's "Good Golly, Miss Molly" mixed in. Let I forget that Fogerty coins the term "chooglin" here. Never have I heard that term before, and I understand even less after listening to the closing track. But hey, keep on chooglin' I guess!
This album by CCR was better than I expected, it was before their war stuff and more focused on what home was to them and it was almost “softer” in a way. The singers voice is very characteristic of the band. I did like this one.
a lot of songs sound similar, 60's blues rock guitar playing is good not as catchy as their other songs, highlights: good golly miss molly, proud mary very very bluesy would listen if i wanted to listen to blues 12 bar blues very common
Good CCR album. Graveyard Train and Chooglin' are a little bit long in runtime and slow the album down a bit, but otherwise it's great!
Love Creedence
With Creedence you know exactly what you're getting and you know it's gonna be good. Favorites: Born on the Bayou, Graveyard Train
Classic CCR, good swampy stuff
CCR manages to put their own spin on straightforward and catchy blues songs. Not bad for wannabe southerners!
A little bit dated, but not bad. It feels like these guys were kind of the genesis of southern rock (leading to Lynyrd Skynrd, Molly Hatchet, etc.) despite being from California; they stepped outside SF psychadelic rock to focus on more straight/country rock. It's a shame they broke up and couldn't keep on chooglin'.
CCR rocks. This album has some great songs, but it’s probably not their best work. It kind of amazes me that they are not a novelty act, considering the fake persona that Fogerty and the band takes on. I’m not judging them for that, just find it interesting.
Great album
Ehrlich, schnörkellos, rauh und kraftvoll, die Pioniere des Swamp Rock. Die Stimme einfach einzigartig.
Classic 1001 album worthy: Yes - 19/33
This one's a workhorse. Three albums that went all in on a bare bones sound of rock. Tight, white quartet, bringing it. Classic version of Proud Mary. One of if not the best white band at this sound in this Era. Always in the pocket. And Born on the Bayou is a song to sweat, drink, and rock. Tight 30-minute albums are a thing!
Born On The Bayou makes me wanna drink some beer and kill some animals. Other than that this album isn't that much different from the other CCR album.
Yeah it's alright
Short n sweet, a classic album bridging the gap between that 60s and 70s sound as it sits right on the edge of the new decade. Creedence have their sound down-packed and are an unmistakeable; beautiful group to listen to. I don’t know where this album sits in their discography time wise, but it feels and sounds like a defining moment for them. They are carving out their own space in the industry and putting together songs that are really really nice to listen to. They are band known for a couple of big rocky tunes you’d blast at almost any party, but this album is not really that… it can almost be certainly played at a party and I can only imagine how amazing it would sound like in a Smokey bar in Memphis. Creedence Clearwater are, rightly so, known I think most for their iconic guitar riffs and catch motifs littered throughout many of their most popular songs. One thing that stood out to me, embarrassingly for the first time, is the incredible vocals of their front man John Fogerty. What a voice, so much pain and passion is conveyed in lyrics that mean more when he is the one singing them. Unreal. Love the album, because of its beautiful simplicity and how well every single element of every single song in this perfectly short album. Great.
This ain't my first experience with CCR, as my dad owns one of their records, but this is certainly the first time I'm actually engaging in a project of theirs on my own. Initial impressions say this is about as high quality as I would expect from the group. The opener is absolutely stupendous, the vocals are iconic as ever and very passionate, and the guitarwork certainly induces a very classic, dusty vibe. Clocking in at just over 30 minutes, too, there really is no reason not to check this out. 3.5 / 5 Leaning 4/5 (since no nuanced ratings here)
Love CCR already but only had their compilation. Solid album front to back, just wish it was longer!
Solid. Lost interest in the longer tracks though. 4/5
Creedence Clearwater Revival is a consistent star in my lineup of musical knowledge. The tracks they produced are just so much fun but also have that bluesy grit of the late 60s psych rock movement. The only issue I have with their albums are they they are often pretty short and their hits are spread out over 5-6 amazing albums. Wonderful follow up to their debut and contains Proud Mary, which if you don't like, I likely don't like you! 7/10.
12/13/24. Well done blues rock without trying to imitate too much, CCR manages to craft their own sound with this. Loved the guitar work.
Wow. Top to bottom great album.
No such thing as a bad CCR album, but not their best.
not as good as Cosmo's Factory
Great blues album. Love CCR.
A classic
What does chooglin’ mean?
Favorites: Born on the Bayou, Graveyard Train It was chill, not especially my type of thing though
Absolutely great album
un sacco di album belli ultimamente, bravo algoritmo
Solid album. Love me some CCR. Classic americana rock baby!
Can't go wrong with CCR! Great album, a nice length and music that makes you feel good! Some days I wish I was born on the bayou.
7/10 Its good but a bit short and too much filler Favourite Song=Born On The Bayou Least Favourite Song=Keep On Chooglin’
I've always thought of myself as "not a big CCR fan" mostly because they've overplayed the hits over the years. That said, I was pleasantly surprised on how good the other songs are on this album. Sure, "Proud Mary" is an awesome tune and covered by many artists (I like the Ike & Tina Turner version best) but every other song on the album is solid. A solid 4 for me.
Not my favourite CCR album. Only a couple great tracks, but the sound is there. Heading off to Google "What is chooglin' " and hoping it doesn't take me anywhere bad...
I have had a soft spot for CCR ever since I heard Bad Moon Rising in American Werewolf In London. This is a solid album by my reckoning, with some great songs on it.
I definitely enjoyed this album more than the first CCR album I received (2 in one book?). This was an all round more pleasant album to listen to, and I caught myself playing for a second time. I was going to comment on their Proud Mary cover until I discovered that Proud Mary is their original song.......!
Loved this album, but the last track on each "side" was a bit too rambling to give a perfect score, I'd rate it 4.5 stars, but life is unfair so I'm rounding down.
6.5/10 Proud Mary
Somehow, I seem to frequently forget how excellent the voice is of this singer of CCR. Then I’ll come across a track again and think, “Holy hell, those are some lungs!” Today was another of those days. Straight away in track one, as soon as the vocals kicked in, I knew I was going to enjoy this album. The only track I already recognised was Proud Mary (if you’ve only heard the Tina Turner version, give this a listen - it’s very different). Overall, a really fun album that I’ll be undoubtedly returning to again.
Classic.
Spela Credence! Den får +1 stjärna för sin timing
Rolling on the river
Classic credence consistent quality as always
Born on the Bayou was one of my favorite songs to hear on the radio growing up. In all humility, the Southern rock and Fogerty’s howl led me to believe they were black. In my defense, CCR was played in sequence with Wilson Picket and James Brown so my young brain just assumed…. This album is a full-throttle CCR jam fest, with the obvious hits being the cover tracks Proud Mary and Little Richard’s Good Golly. The off-tracks are also orchestrated perfectly, with an odd favorite being the jam heavy Keep on Chooglin’. It’s often surprising that CCR lasted such a short time, but considering this was one of three hard-hitting albums they put out in a single year it’s no wonder they burned out on each other. But I will never burn out on CCR.
Awesome album! Short, sweet and to the point. Born on the Bayou is my favorite track but also props to John Fogerty for writing Tina Turner’s classic Proud Mary. Crazy that this album is only 33 minutes and 7 tracks. Packed a lot of punch in a short amount.
Мне понравился. Классика)
Much better as a collection and a representation of the band than the other albums, more varied and instrumentally interesting. Enjoyed this one.
Brilliant 💋
Yes letsgo!! Ganz geils Album gsii, nici Gitarre, gueti alti Rockstimm und ab und zu na es Schnauzörgeli. Leider chlli churz gsii hät gern na wiiterglost.
Cool album
Decent album and some absolutely classic tunes - actually really enjoyed this!
No shot a rock album is this good. Definitely mislabeled
I did not expect to like this album so much. The vocalist's singing style was a bit too distracting at times, which is probably my only complaint about the album. Well, and it ended way too soon. I might actually bump it up to five later, after further listening. Best song: Born on the Bayou Other highlights: Proud Mary, Good Golly Miss Molly 4.5 stars
3.86.
the best!
Amazing per usual
Kickass rock
Solid Creedence.
Lekker rocken, met ook wel wat chille nummers.
The album surprised me. I really liked it. I hadn't expected that. Maybe I should listen to more of the band, which I apparently misjudged. 4/5
Favs while listening: Bootleg, Penthouse Pauper - really fun tremolo on the guitar in Born on the Bayou - lyrics aren’t really important to me and the rather unclear way of saying Bootleg is funny and fits to the overall vibe of the song in my opinion - Graveyard Train is rather minimalistic but has some interesting bass and guitar phrases that built some call and response patterns - loooove the guitar tone overall - good golly miss molly is a fun song in general!!! Such a good one to dance to - Proud Mary is one that i already knew and I’ve heard it too often 🙂↕️ - nonetheless a good song - just like everyone who listend to this album or the one specific song on there asks themselves: what the fuck does chooglin mean? - well you can actually google and you’ll find a search result where John Fogerty himself answers this question: its ‘what happens when you got to ball and have a good time‘ - some songs are unnecessarily long for their own good but id say its because these are just 4 dudes who enjoy making music and jam together and i think that’s beautiful :) sometimes you get lost in playing OVERALL: 4/5
Thumbs up
Creedence being Creedence
Compared to the other CCR albums on this list... this is maybe the weakest one. Still it's CCR and it rocks. 3.5/5
Cortito pero nais
Big chungus
86% Best: Born On The Bayou; Good Golly Miss Molly; Penthouse Pauper; Proud Mary Must-Hear? Sure
Born on the bayou Penthouse pauper Proud Mary Everything I would want a blues/rock album to be. Short and sweet.
3.8 1x
Gubbrock när den är som bäst. Man kan ju inte annat än älska känslan man får av det bluesrockiga i kombination med Fogertys röst.
What a voice of John Fogerty. Great album with great songs. The feelings conveyed by the CCR are hard to explain but you truly feel as going through the jungle or the bayou, being a complete badas, having leather-like skin with marlboro reds and aviator ray-ban's. Absolute banger of a LP by Creedence. 4/5 Songs that i liked the most: Track 1 - Born on the Bayou Track 2 - Bootleg Track 4 - Good Golly Miss Molly Track 6 - Proud Mary Track 7 - Keep On Chooglin' Songs that i didn't like that much: Track 3- Graveyard Train Track 5 - Penthouse Paper
Niiiiice, CCR album reviews seem to really vary from me album to album. This was a great one. Proud Mary is a banger and I enjoyed reading up on the back-story a lot. I'm super interested in how songs are written by different artists. Good Golly Miss Molly is also a pure belter. These kind of songs make surprisingly good running songs in my opinion. Can imagine these tracks are really really fun to play/perform too. Fun little transportation from South West Germany on a work-from-home Friday to 1969 on the Bayou, great stuff!
Is there anything more comforting than CCR?! Probs not. Warm and soothing.
Exactly what I expected but really good. A great mood and made me feel like I was hanging out in the bayou. I read their wiki and turns out they used to be called the Golliwogs...
Great stuff from CCR. First time I’ve listened all the way through, classic sound from them.
4.5/5
These guys are allergic to making bad music.
Never noticed the cowbell on Born On The Bayou. This album is really good. The shorter songs are tight and the extended jams of Graveyard Train and Keep On Chooglin’ (whatever Choogling is?) are given time to breathe. This is the kind of music where I want to be there with the band. Like, give me a harmonica I’ll jump right in. Favorite songs were Born On The Bayou, Good Golly Miss Molly, Proud Mary, and Keep On Chooglin’.
Good
I love CCR, but this album isn’t my fave of theirs.
There is not a bad track on this album. The rhythm is hypnotic and the guitars and vocals really hook you. Some big hits too. Did not disappoint.
Solid swampy fun. Wtf is chooglin?
Good!
Lovely sounding album, the white fusion of soul and country rock.
All time Americana right here. What a tear, 7 albums in 4 years and a busy 1969 with three defining records. Eliminate the drug out long tracks on this and it's a classic. Hendrix, Doors, Byrds, Beach Boys and Creedance top 5 USA classic rock
A bit flat
CCR is one of the best pure rock bands of the 60s. When everyone else went psychedelic, they stayed bluesy and it works great. Born On The Bayou, while great, is somewhat funny, seeing as they guys are NorCal AF.
Приятный альбом
Americas Led Zeppelin and a huge step towards heavy metal.
I love listening to full albums of artists where I only know their singles. CCR has always been mentioned around my friend group and my family as something they listened to, but again, I was really only shown the singles (Bad Moon Rising, Proud Mary...) When the album started with Born On The Bayou, as soon as the singer gave that first note, my face was in completely shock of, "WOW, this guy is incredible". I don't remember that power in the songs that I knew CCR from. That feeling was maintained throughout the album, what an incredibly powerful voice. All the musicians are fantastic. The bass player is who stood out to me as his lines were unique and just kept my grooving the whole time. Having just listened to David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy" and giving that a 5/5, I also had that same thought of "Is there something about this album that wouldn't give it a perfect rating?". The short answer, yes. There were sections on this album where it just felt like the band was "jamming", which to their defence, keeps the Blues spirit. In particular, this occurs on "Keep on Chooglin'". As someone described to me one time, "They kept soloing until the cows came home". Because of that, I'd give this album a 4/5. I'd give it 4.5 if I could.
Great little 7-track album with Born on the Bayou, Proud Mary and a cover of Little Richard’s Good Golly Miss Molly. Definitely a little samey - but sticking this on in the background is a great 30 mins! Keep on Chooglin’ is an awesome 7 mins of bluesy, chilled jam session. 8/10
Wow! Just fucking wow. I honestly don't really like rock, but this album is amazing.
It's curious. An album that I've not previously listened to...yet it sounds so familiar. Tracks that I've heard in various places, and on various movies. Others where the riffs, structure melodies all seem familiar. It's a damned fine album, and for me, Born on the Bayou is the stand-out track.
Solid, bold and clear. Very accessible music, nothing interfering with the flow of music
Far from the best Creedence album. But it contains the essential tracks, Born on the Bayou and Proud Mary. The album tracks are perfectly fine, and the cover of Good Golly Miss Molly is okay. And running a short and sweet 33 minutes, the album doesn't overstay its welcome. I love that about the Creedence albums. They came in rapid succession; but they were all short bursts of greatness.
A few high profile, known songs. General musical feel throughout the album. 4/5
Good album but they don’t quite sound like Creedence yet. Sounds like a covers album even if only one track is.
Still amazing how much excellent output came from these guys in two years!
Only real complaint is that my favorite CCR song -- The Midnight Special -- isn't on this album. Good album
Day238 - i liked this album, maybe not as much as chaos factory but proud mary alone makes it great
Very nice, but not the best CCR album. Keep On Chooglin is nice and Proud Mary keeps on being one of their ultimate classics. Viva John Forgerty!
Geweldig album. Niet even goed als Green River of Cosmo's Factory, maar hoort hier echt wel in dit lijstje (ik hoop dat die andere twee er ook in zitten). Dit is American music op z'n best, met een heerlijk vettig accent. 4.4*
Yep fan of this not an album I’d given a lot of time but it’s pretty awesome
Solid album, very easy to listen to.
sick album cover, pretty good music best tracks: penthouse pauper, proud mary
Klassiska låtar men inte några av mina absoluta Creedencefavoriter. Vass fyra.
Good rocking classic rock. Proud Mary and Good Golly Miss Molly are classic, but the best song on this brief album is Penthouse Pauper. I also enjoyed the blues we got here.
It amazes me sometimes how CCR could create such great songs in such a short period of time, let alone releasing 3 albums all in span of 12 months. This album is straddling the line between being a (3) which is a "good solid album" and a (4) which is a "great album." Easily a 3.5/5 but will it reach a 4 by the time I can rate it and move on? Possibly.
That is NOT the style I was expecting from the band name and opening song name, but I'm certainly not complaining. "Proud Mary" marks the first song in this adventure that I recognize from outside of it (this is Day 5 for me)! And it remains very catchy. I can't help but wonder how many of these albums I would have felt were more unique or revolutionary at the time they came out. Naturally, if you made this list, you've probably inspired a lot of people since.
4 - The sound of this album is somehow different and exactly the same to some of their best known hits. Not the biggest fan of this kind of rock n roll, but they do it well
These guys were badass! Timeless cooking.
This album is ok overall, but gets an extra star because Proud Mary and Penthouse Pauper are some classic jams
kinda swaggy for boomer tunes
8/10
What a perfect album for the hottest day of the year! I love CCR, I don't know why, I just do. There's something really groovy, swampy, soulful, even primal about their sound and the songs are great. I'm not massively into classic American rock but something sets them apart. His voice could be annoying if the music and songs weren't so good but everything comes together and it works. The album is good from start to finish, and it's refreshingly succinct. 'Proud Mary' is an absolute classic, I can't think of a more rhythmic track by a guitar band ❤️ Last thing, how good is the recording and production? 55 years old and still sounds amazing belting out of the speaker.
I still don't know what "chooglin" means
Incredible album, and very deserving to be on this list. The title sums up the album perfectly, and the music is still played on radio to this day.
Awesome album, it’s hard to have a bad time while listening to CCR
A little jammy, a little dancey, a little swampy, and it features John Fogerty singing the absolute shit out of the word "choogling". What's not to like?
So southern, so swampy, what do you mean John Fogarty was born in California? Mans as Louisiana as anyone in history. The start of a, frankly, ridiculous 4 album run
Know them and a few songs
A good album, I do like some Creedence Clearwater Revival. I really liked Good Golly Miss Molly.
Really not sure three CCR albums were necessary. 2 albums by the same band from the same year of release in this list seems crazy. Each album undoubtedly includes a couple of crackers though. And, well, they're always consistently good. Also another excellent thing to pop out when it's far too hot.
Little did anybody know it at the time but 1969 was the year of the Revival, Creedence Clearwater Revival to be exact. Bayou Country, the first of three (!!!) albums released by the band that year, is an exemplary effort that puts the band's best traits on display. John Fogerty and his compositional style becomes strengthened throughout the album, which brought about some of the more enduring songs in the CCR catalog and of the late Sixties in general. A full on blast from start to finish, thankfully they would have more to give us. Favorites: Born on the Bayou, Graveyard Train, Proud Mary, Keep On Chooglin'.
#299. Souther swamp rock from a band from... the Bay area. Makes sense if you don't look at it. It fucks either way, imposters or not. 4/5: chooglin'
If you spin a wheel on CCR's discography, you're likely going to land on a good album (Mardi Gras being the exception). They had honed the swamp rock sound from the start, and rode it out into the '70s. It was distinct from the psychedelic rock scene happening around them and I like to think they helped move the rock genre forward. Proud Mary is on here and that song is a classic. I can't not enjoy CCR, they're my boys. I love my boys.
Brings back some memories
Swamp rock at it's best.
Still not my favorite band. But I’ve discovered I like CCR a lot more than I thought I did.
Dank groovin’ throughout this album. “Graveyard Train” is especially good.
Great swamp blues album.
More solid CCR. While I understand the urge to write a song about chooglin' after using it in one song, I think maintaining the mystery of what, in fact, it means to choogle would have been the smarter play.
Big wheel keep on turnin'
CCR anytime!!!!
Back to our roots…. Love this! I’ve listened to the entire CCR discography in the last couple months and I really love them. This album is no exception! Retroactively wish I could give Cosmo’s Factory a 5 on here too!
CCR! Excellent!
i mean like I said in my first review, these guys kick ass and are one of the best bands ever. the music is so consistent and good - i love it!
CCR is always pretty good.
Lekker album, Fogerty kan echt een potje zingen, maar toch een paar mindere nummers, naast een paar toppers.
classic album full of bluesy swamp rock with the inimitable john fogerty on vocals. while not their best, it’s certainly a great album from that era. highlights: “born on the bayou” “good golly, miss molly” “proud mary”
Fuckin’ Creedence, man
bangers across the board, bootleg was amazing, really like this one
Rumour has it they were, indeed, born on the bayou
Funsies
one out of their great five
Great bluesy swampy rock
Love a 33-minute album. Lots of classics and fun.
薄纱现在的摇滚,还得是带点blues好听
Bootleg Good Golly Miss Molly Proud Mary Very chill nice album.
I enjoy this
Favorite Tracks: Born On The Bayou Good Golly Miss Molly Proud Mary
Very good album. Not great. Has the CCR sound tow huge hits
7;86
Love this! The album really has this improvised, garage rock feel to it, seeing how the album seems to just be a collection of some randomly selected songs, with varying lengths and vibes Favorite tracks: Born on the Bayou, Good Golly Miss Molly, Proud Mary Album art: doesn't speak to me very strongly. Simple enough and it works, but it doesn't feel like there is much artistic expression speaking from the image.
Good, honest, American rock music.
Fun album, I’ve heard some of these songs but others were new to me. Amazing to learn that this is the first of 3 albums they released that year. No bad songs here but a few were a bit long, 4/5
I've heard almost all the songs on this album here or there, but I don't think I've ever listened to this album all the way through until now. They all fit together quite well and this album as a whole sounds like peak CCR to me.
I don’t think I can give a CCR album less than a 4, they were a magical band with an amazing sound. Born on the Bayou and Proud Mary are classics, the other tracks are solid, the best being Penthouse Pauper. Keep on Chooglin’ isn’t the strongest ending and the cover of Good Golly Miss Molly is alright, but this is still the most fun you can have in a swamp.
nice country rock
i really enjoyed listening to it, i think this is a great album to listen to when you just want to chill out. i can ear some notes of The Beatles in this album too which is pretty cool.
Some excellent swamp rock here, including a few real classics. Kinda drags a little towards the end (and the cover of Good Golly Miss Molly is just alright), but still solid 4/5.
See Reviews: #290, #335 To add: I associate the Bayou with voodoo shit. Bad Juju, you see? We can thank and/or blame Scooby-Doo for this racist review. 3.5 because of white guilt.
Day 29 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. I never knew you could infuse a swamp tone with Americana genre but I am all here for it. It really is surprising that I knew some of these songs even though I was born nowhere near that era, guess they just really stand the test of time. It is an amazing rock album that really set the sound for CCR down the line. There was only one song I could really point at and say it was the weakest, Graveyard Train, but it was just a bit slow compared to rest. Although this album is still stellar and great example of how good rock album can be.
Kult 😎 munnspill etc. Blues-aktig rock 🙂
It's pretty good, obviously Proud Mary went on to be a classic. I've always preferred CCR's version. I don't think it's their best work though.

Very solid record by CCR. Enjoyed most of songs on this besides a very few that ran a bit too long for my liking but still wasn't bad. This was honestly a banger and a pleasure to listen to. If you ever want to know what it feels like to be an American just listen to this and or all of CCR's discography. Would recommend. Best - Born on the Bayou, Bootleg, and Proud Mary No bad songs 4.0 out of 5
Lekker Amerikaans
# Playlist track - Proud Mary # Notes - A super enjoyable album! Great vibes, instrumentals and rhythm. - "Proud Mary" is an all time classic.
Short Relaxing Wtf is chalooging
i couldve sworn these guys are dirt boggers from some drowned farm in Louisiana or sth
A true rocker
proud mary, good golly miss molly, and born on the bayou really takes this album to the next level. short, sweet, and full of groove. this is a pretty stellar album.
Solid. Good listen all the way through. Great summertime vibes.
Rating: 9/10 Some excellent swamp rock, played with so much soul, passion, and charisma. The band is heavily influenced by blues but their sound is so unique and works so well that it is quite impressive. The two longer tracks are a bit too long (and still great) and the rest of the album is fantastic. Favorite songs: Born On The Bayou, Bootleg, Graveyard Train, Good Golly Miss Molly, Penthouse Pauper, Proud Mary. Least favorite song: Keep On Chooglin'.
Great instrumentation and song writing
Keep on chooglin' y'all
Overall, it was an okay experience. Not really my cup of tea but I can see the appeal of the album for fans of the genre.
Enjoyed that
Good riffs! I guess!
Smells like mud and rust
**Bayou Country by Creedence Clearwater Revival: An In-Depth Review** **Introduction** "Bayou Country," released in January 1969, is the second studio album by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). This album marked a significant step in CCR’s career, propelling them into the mainstream and establishing their signature sound. Comprised of seven tracks, it blends rock, blues, country, and swamp rock, reflecting the band’s roots and John Fogerty’s distinctive songwriting and vocal style. **Lyrics** John Fogerty, the principal songwriter and vocalist, crafted lyrics that reflect a variety of themes, from Americana and social issues to personal reflection and storytelling. The album opens with "Born on the Bayou," a song that immerses the listener in the Southern Gothic atmosphere. Fogerty’s evocative lyrics paint a picture of life in the South, filled with mystique and a hint of nostalgia. The repetitive chant of "Born on the Bayou" encapsulates a longing for simpler times and places. "Proud Mary," arguably the album’s most famous track, tells the story of a person leaving behind a mundane life to find freedom and purpose on the river. The song's narrative is enriched by its vivid imagery and down-to-earth storytelling, making it relatable and timeless. Lines like "Big wheel keep on turnin' / Proud Mary keep on burnin'" capture a sense of perpetual motion and resilience. The social consciousness of the late 1960s seeps into "Bootleg" and "Penthouse Pauper," where Fogerty tackles themes of authenticity and disparity. In "Bootleg," the repetition of "Bootleg, bootleg" underscores a critique of counterfeit lifestyles, while "Penthouse Pauper" contrasts the lives of the rich and poor with biting irony: "If I were a man, and you were a dog / I'd throw you a bone, and I'd laugh like a hog." **Music** Musically, "Bayou Country" is a showcase of CCR’s blend of rock and roll with roots music. "Born on the Bayou" features Fogerty’s growling vocals and swampy guitar riffs, creating a dense, atmospheric sound. The use of tremolo and reverb effects adds to the song's eerie, haunting quality. "Proud Mary" stands out with its clean, catchy guitar riff and upbeat tempo, embodying the quintessential CCR sound. The interplay between Fogerty’s lead guitar and the rhythm section of bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford provides a solid, driving force throughout the track. The song’s bridge, with its dynamic shifts, exemplifies CCR’s knack for creating engaging and memorable compositions. "Graveyard Train," a seven-minute blues-infused track, showcases Fogerty’s harmonica skills and the band’s ability to create a slow-burning, immersive experience. The repetitive structure and somber tone evoke the feeling of a relentless journey, mirroring the song's theme of death and the passage of time. "Keep on Chooglin’" closes the album with a nearly eight-minute jam session, emphasizing CCR’s instrumental prowess and energy. The song’s simple, repetitive lyrics serve as a backdrop for extended solos and improvisation, highlighting the band's tight cohesion and Fogerty’s virtuosic guitar work. **Production** Produced by John Fogerty, "Bayou Country" benefits from a raw, unpolished sound that enhances its authenticity. The production focuses on clarity and separation of instruments, ensuring each component of the band’s sound is distinctly heard. This approach allows the listener to appreciate the intricate interplay between Fogerty’s lead guitar, Tom Fogerty’s rhythm guitar, Cook’s bass, and Clifford’s drums. The album’s production is characterized by its minimalism. There are few overdubs, giving the songs a live, spontaneous feel. This straightforward production style suits the band’s music, which relies on strong, organic performances rather than studio trickery. However, some critics argue that this approach results in a lack of sonic variety across the album, as the songs maintain a consistent, albeit somewhat monotonous, sound. **Themes** "Bayou Country" explores a range of themes, with a strong emphasis on Americana and Southern identity. The recurring imagery of rivers, swamps, and rural landscapes evokes a sense of place and cultural heritage. Songs like "Born on the Bayou" and "Proud Mary" celebrate the simplicity and resilience of Southern life, while also acknowledging its complexities and hardships. The album also delves into themes of freedom and escape. "Proud Mary" is a quintessential example, with its protagonist seeking liberation on the river. This theme resonates with the broader cultural context of the 1960s, a time when many Americans were questioning traditional values and seeking new paths. Social commentary is another significant theme. "Bootleg" and "Penthouse Pauper" reflect concerns about authenticity and inequality, topics that were particularly relevant during the era of civil rights movements and economic disparity. Through these songs, Fogerty critiques the superficiality and materialism he observed in society. **Influence** "Bayou Country" had a profound impact on rock music, solidifying CCR’s place in the pantheon of classic rock bands. The album’s blend of rock, blues, and country influenced numerous artists and genres. Its raw, stripped-down production style prefigured the back-to-basics approach that would later characterize the roots rock and Americana movements. "Proud Mary" became a cultural touchstone, covered by countless artists across various genres. Notably, Ike & Tina Turner’s 1971 rendition transformed it into a soul and R&B classic, demonstrating the song’s versatility and broad appeal. The track’s success helped bridge the gap between rock and soul music, fostering greater cross-genre collaboration. CCR’s emphasis on concise, hook-laden songs with strong narrative elements influenced subsequent generations of songwriters. Bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band drew inspiration from CCR’s ability to craft memorable, story-driven rock songs. **Pros and Cons** *Pros:* 1. **Strong Songwriting**: John Fogerty’s songwriting is a standout feature, with memorable melodies and evocative lyrics that resonate with listeners. Tracks like "Proud Mary" and "Born on the Bayou" are exemplary in their storytelling and musical composition. 2. **Cohesive Sound**: The album maintains a consistent sonic identity, blending rock, blues, and country elements seamlessly. This cohesiveness contributes to a unified listening experience. 3. **Authenticity**: The raw, unpolished production enhances the album’s authenticity, capturing the essence of CCR’s live sound. The minimalistic approach allows the band’s musicianship to shine through. 4. **Cultural Impact**: "Bayou Country" has had a lasting influence on rock music and popular culture. Its songs have been widely covered and continue to be celebrated as classics. *Cons:* 1. **Repetitive Structure**: Some tracks, particularly the longer ones like "Graveyard Train" and "Keep on Chooglin’," can feel repetitive and drawn out. The extended jam sections, while showcasing the band’s instrumental skills, may not appeal to all listeners. 2. **Limited Sonic Variety**: The album’s consistent sound, while cohesive, can also be seen as a drawback. The lack of significant variation in production and arrangement might lead to a monotonous listening experience for some. 3. **Basic Production**: While the raw production has its merits, it can also be perceived as lacking depth and polish. This might not appeal to listeners who prefer more elaborate studio work. **Conclusion** "Bayou Country" is a seminal album that encapsulates the essence of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s sound and vision. Its blend of rock, blues, and country, coupled with John Fogerty’s evocative songwriting and raw production, creates a timeless listening experience. The album’s themes of Americana, freedom, and social commentary resonate with the cultural context of the late 1960s and continue to be relevant today. Despite its repetitive structures and limited sonic variety, "Bayou Country" remains a landmark in rock music, influencing countless artists and genres. Its standout tracks, particularly "Proud Mary" and "Born on the Bayou," have become cultural icons, cementing CCR’s legacy as one of the great American rock bands.
Dudes rock
Hard to miss CCR 1 classic rock staple. Great groove. Great vocal delivery. 2 fine. A little repetitive Liked the blues one Not sure what chooglin’ is but good jam in the middle Fine album 4 star
It was a decent album but i think the ender was a little too long and WTF does “Choogling” even mean
3.7 Proud Mary carries it. Bootleg is good.
Cool little Swamp Rock album. There’s some good songs but Green River is still better.
CCR is one of the great bands of the late 60’s / early 70’s, the classic-east of classic rock. Back in the day, I owned the 1972 Creedence Gold compilation, and the 1976 Creedence Chronicles double record compilation. Really, those are all you need, hitting all the high points. But I do have their “Live At Royal Albert Hall” record (which was NOT recorded at Albert Hall). So, onto this album: I’m very familiar with 3 of the 7 songs, all of which are very good. "Born On The Bayou" and "Proud Mary" are classics, and "Keep On Chooglin'" is solid. The rest of the album is all good, but not great. Overall, I'd rate it 3.5, which leads to the great rounding question. After much pondering, round up to 4!
A real choogler
4.5
A good album with some highly recognizable songs. Overall, I like Creedence.
A good album
Plenty of classic stuff here, Fogerty is an awesome singer, songwriter and guitarist
Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” >>>
A classic rock staple with a few anthems of the era. A few tracks take a bit of a slog but an overall enjoyable listen.
Grew up on CCR. Enjoy CCR. Even the new-to-me tracks (which weren’t many) I enjoyed. 60s Rock/Southern Rock/Blues. Get it!! Mid 4
The perfect album to eat crawfish to
Great Southern blues rock/jams
Not bad but not that interesting.
KEEP ON CHOOGLAYNNN
All the "Big Lebowski" stuff aside, this is a hands-down classic.
Loved it. Kept the same energy through the album and was nice and concise
Shout out to Uncle John
Loved this one! First off so many hits, Proud Mary, Born on the Bayou, I mean cmon. And then it’s only roughly a half hour. Should probably give it a five but I’m giving it a four because I know that there will be better CCR to come
Chooglin Blues / country/ folk rock. Not actually born on the bayou. Part of an insane 3 albums in a year run of great music
Not something I would have chosen to listen to but nice easy background listening. Had heard the first song before but didn’t know the name.
Good old swampy rock
This is the third Creedence album I've come across on the list so far, and I would rate it worse than Cosmo's Factory and on par with Green River. Born on the Bayou and Proud Mary are the standout songs, with the rest of the album being solid but not exceptional. Pretty short album as well.
This is pretty good - dirty swamp rock (even if it is more than a bit inauthentic, but so are a lot of classic rock bands) that infects you with something other than malaria. Graveyard Train hangs around a bit too long, but Born On The Bayou (really, John?) And Penthouse Pauper are great.
Born On The Bayou – 5 Bootleg – 4.5 Graveyard Train – 3.5 Good Golly Miss Molly – 4.5 Penthouse Paper – 4.5 Proud Mary – 5 Keep On Chooglin – 4 Average - 4.33 (4) Swamp Rock 👍
Loved it! Haven’t thought of this album in forever. I really enjoyed it.
CCR is, in my opinion, the quintessential American 60's rock band. Bayou Country is probably their lowest rated album but still a raging classic!
I enjoyed it. Between hits and deep cuts, it’s a consistent vibe I’d come back to.
It's Creedence. There's a reason it plays all the time.
A classic in pretty much all respects. No weak spots, catchy songs, still known to this day. Doesn't hit at that deeper level to quite warrant a 5, but as close as it can get.
Molto CCCR, soprattutto 'Proud Mary'
I love me some CCR.
I can't explain it, but this album is really good. Which is funny, because I don't think I've ever liked anything that sounds close to CCR. I just love that it's got a groovy rock-n-roll pureness to it. Top tracks: Graveyard Train, Penthouse Pauper, Proud Mary
Excellent more relaxed album that Green River with some slow cooker jams. Born on the Bayou makes me laugh a bit since Fogerty is a Californian, but none the less, this album hits most of the right notes.
Great listen 4/5
I liked it. I was leaning towards a 3 after the first listen, but after the second listen, I think it's a 4. I didn't think there was a ton of variation to their sound, but I think that can be attributed to Fogerty's voice, which I like. But, there isn't a ton of range.
There's a terrific guitar on here, great songs vocalized with great skill - superb work. Amazing how well a boy from the west coast created that deep south, cajun bayou sound. No really dead spots, either.
3.8 not my favourite of theirs but has some standout songs faves: proud mary, born on the bayou
Lots of bangers on this. I really enjoyed this listen. Love me some good Blues Rock.
I love CCR, but this is not one of their best albums in my opinion. Proud Mary is obviously great, but I don't think the other songs hold quite the same weight.
Fun listen through. Nice and short. Maybe just I've lived with the song for a while, but it definitely evokes a bayou feel to me, or at least I would associate with the bayou: rougher vocal but not gritty, rockabilly, and blues that are still upbeat. The band sounded full. I don't know how many people are in it, but it felt like like a big group.
Oh how I wish Proud Mary didn't have so much personal baggage. Though jesus CCR has some fucking pipes. It's dancable, its swampy, its groovy, its bluesy. What more do you want? Keep On Choogglin' is an appropriate blues outro that takes forever. But sonically, it totally works, even if I dont personally love it.
This one was a hit! I liked the blues inspired sound, the long(ish) jams and just the overall vibe
Great vocals and a muscular backing with a fantastic fusion of rockabilly, soul and funk (aka swamp rock). 'Proud Mary's is an instantly recognisable classic. The two lenghthy tracks outstay there welcome a bit. Cool cover art.
Swamp rock rocks! Bit same-y but a good sign of things to come, little wonder that the Dude was such a fan
The band is great, reminds me of being a teenager! Just love the music ! 4 stars
Whenever I hear any CCR song my thoughts immediately go to a helicopter full of soldiers with the door wide open flying over the paddy fields of 'Nam. I've watched too many war movies I suppose. Anyway, another instantly recognizable band with a unique sounds. Lots of the songs are quite similar, but there was a time and place for that. Deserves to be on this list.
That's a damn good album. I could use a little less chooglin though.
Great album Standout songs: Graveyard Train Penthouse Pauper
Always credence
Many familiar songs; however, the "longer" songs were a great discovery!
That is some SWAMPY-ass rock right there boy. (Grew up in suburban UK in the 80's but this is what America should sound like to me)
Pretty much what I expected. Tracks that ended up being popular are a class above everything else on the album, a few tracks feel like filler, but overall a pleasant experience.
Not the best CCR album, but decent. 3.5
Great listen on a road trip, driving through Virginia, Maryland and Delaware felt like a perfect fit even tho it’s not the Deep South. Rhythm/beat is consistent which I did enjoy on a whole listen through.
Loved this album I wish it was longer!
Album feels like a road trip. It gives comfort and easy listening. Good golly miss Molly doesn’t seem to fit in the album for me. My only beef is they’re not born in the bayou they’re from around Berkeley.
Great album!
Solid album. I like some of their other stuff more but hadn’t heard any of these songs and thought it was chill.
Nice, tight, and full of bangers. Pretty same-y but it’s so short that it doesn’t rub me the wrong way. Chooglin’ might be my new favorite word and, like other commenters, I heard “voulez” all through Bootleg.
It's hard to review because Creedence is just part of my DNA at this point. Always a good vibe.
Really good album, Born on a Bayou, and Proud Mary are classics, the cover of Good Golly Miss Molly, is also very good. The rest of the album is what you would expect from CCR, classic southern blues rock.
It's a rocker, with a lot of recognizable songs. Hard to criticize it, but I definitely need to be in the mood for any classic rock--I heard far too much of it when I was growing up.
I LOVE Credence Clearwater Revival. I listened to this album like 3 times through today. As will Arrival, I cried to it as I drove down the 5. 🥰 It’s not quite a 5-star album to me, but it’s a classic. Tons of nostalgia.
I like this more than I expected to. I know the album and the hits, but never spent much time with CCR. TBH - I can’t tolerate Fogerty’s voice for very long in one sitting. On the plus, the guitar work is killer - sleazy/sludgy goodness. Good musicians all around. Nice bass line in “Bayou”. Needless to say, the songs are really, really hooky. Good shit.
great fun jingle jangle stuff
A lot of fun
4 - liked it but didn’t grip me as much as the other album
Another pretty decent CCR album, but it’s not particularly inspiring a selection Fave Track: Born on the Bayou 3.5/5
I kept on chooglin’
Solid bayou rock like most of their records from around this time were. Gets a bit jammy at times. Best listened to on a farm in Bethel, NY
Liked it. A style I don't usually go for but turned out some good background music with some nice guitar solos.
Good representation of 60s-70s southern rock
Finally something decent So short though !
Giving this a 7. It’s bops but not sure how much I’ll go back to it. Loved the proud mary
Not my favorite Creedence, but still very good. 3.5/5
