nice sound, fun vibe.

It's fun to hear people messing around with new tools and technologies in emergent genres, using copy-paste sampling, drum machines, scratching, synths and all the rest to create some upbeat beats and dancefloor filling rave music. It's incredibly dated and specific in a nice way - the sound you'd hear in the party scene of a Gregg Araki movie where everything is day-glo goth and covered in neon graffitti.

Really wasn't feeling it until about the last 15 minutes or so. 2.5/5

Excellent grooves. One star for each ten thousand headmen.

It's fun and upbeat. First track was very interesting; pop influence with a bit of a 70's soul or disco feel to it as well. As usual, when this becomes just beats I sort of lose interest. Not Paid Enough/Paid In Full being a perfect example of how great this stuff works with an MC.

I enjoyed this album. It had that old school 80’s sound mixed with house and techno. This was fun and I would happily listen to it again. My only note is that it was twice as long as it really needed to be.

The title made me worry but this was overall pleasant to listen to. Only place I could find this was YouTube Music so I can't speak to individual songs because it was on LONG file. I emphasize long because it was long. I think that might be my problem with house, trap, party, electronic (whatever you call it!) music. I don't mind the beats and the rhythms but they just keep going and repeat over and over with little changes here and there. I personally need something more to break it up, otherwise I zone out. I also know its for dancing and just dancing to the same exact beat and rhythm over and over gets boring to me. It wasn't bad to listen to, I just didn't need it to be sooooo long. I am also not sure what was so influential about this, sounded a lot like other music in this genre.

loved and hated it in equal measure but I'm in a good mood so rounded up to 3 stars

Neat stuff. A little too long for me

Instrumental songs and parts are timeless but any singing is instantly 80s.

Interesting beats, it was an enjoyable listen. I think it sounds pretty basic nowadays, but maybe when it was new it sounded innovative.

Not bad. Not great. I did get a Meat Beat Manifesto vibe off the last song. I wouldn't add it to my collection but i also wouldn't change the song if it found it's way into a playlist on YouTube.

Dance. Funny.

Talk about music not matching album artwork or artist name. Another one I had to listen to on YouTube. Started out as 80s disco inspired dance music. Took a turn but was expecting it to be a bit more trippy - it’s pretty straight ahead stuff. Not my favorite genre ever but it’s fine. Certainly not bad.

Interesting album. Found on YouTube. Some classic tunes.

don't know this band

I was familiar with Coldcut from the 80s hip-hop world going into this, with their superb (and better than the OG) remix of Eric B and Rakim's 'Paid In Full'. The standout element of that remix has to be just how many samples they decided to throw in there, all without interrupting the song's flow. Plus I noticed while listening to this, that some of those samples are also used on the song 'Theme from "Reportage"'. I wasn't quite expecting this to go in a house-y direction, though it was pleasant for the most part. I loved 'People Hold On,' and Mark E. Smith's appearance on '(I'm) In Deep' was interesting (it kind of sounded like proto-LCD-S). 'Stop this Crazy Thing' I liked quite a bit just 'cause of how out there it is, especially with those horns driving the main melody. I mean it's fine, but far more enjoyable when you're not forcing yourself to pay attention to it. There's admittedly a certain charm to how cluttered and all over the place it can be.

What’s Coldcut? --well, I'm finding out, thanks to 3dou on YT. First couple songs are good, third had the Fall's frontman on (distorted) lead vocals, which was unfortunate Bonkers Tarzan sample on "Stop This Crazy Thing", I dig it Ah :/ I realize I have to do a bit of further digging, since "Smoke 1" and "Doctorin' the House" of the original UK album are replaced in the US version, aka the aforementioned YT upload. Seems there are other differences, like track lengths... but I don't really care about those Okay, done the album- definitely earns the "Big Dumb Fun" award from me personally. Reminiscent of the sound of Gorillaz and the Avalanches. Now let's see what the US version is hiding... "Smoke 1" plus Queen Latifah is maybe my favourite track now, but it was decent as an instrumental too, ngl. "Not Paid Enough" is fine, but long HL: "People Hold On", "Which Doctor", "Smoke Dis One" (US Version), "Doctorin' the House" (UK Version) September 17, 2024

big 80s-early 90s cable television vibes.

A little too close to EDM for me to really like but I easily made it through the hour plus run time and wouldn't mind hearing it again sometime.

The album in total is not my cup of tea. Just because of the really good hit single "People Hold On" (feat. Lisa Stansfield) I give it the three stars. Worst: "In Deep" 2,5

A relic from a past best appreciated on the dance floor. Not my cup of tea but not wholly terrible.

It's kinda what I needed this morning as it's dance/trance/house which feels like great gym music....man does it start to drag though.

lovely time

So odd

Honestly not bad at all - much more enjoyable than I was expecting. It did feel too long and started to wear out its welcome, but worth the listen.

Is that noise the uncleared sample police knocking at the door? Simpler times.

With the lovely voice of Lisa Stansfield. Many of this songs past the test of time. Still relevant music. Love it.

Had to listen to the album on YouTube, probably because of copyright issues. A funky and groovy electronic album. Used a lot of samples and sounds, cut and mixed. Just goes for a fun vibe. Not impressed by anything here, but it was not a bad listen. Catches the sound it goes for from the jump.

Elektronisia biittejä ja sample musiikkia. Tarzan sample alko vähän jo ärsyttää :;D Mutta ihan jees taustamusiikkia tekemiselle. Vaikee sanoa parhaita, kun youtubesta kuunteli, mutta parhaat: People Hold On, Stop This Crazy Thing (Se Tarzan kappale)

I can hear how this influenced later works in the genre. Good beats and a playful style with the sampling.

Cool find

Some Lisa Stansfield with a mix of Dee-Lite. Funky stuff. Just good enough to listen to once.

I liked this. I’m a big fan of electronic music with found audio clips. Big Propellerheads vibes here; perhaps Coldcut was an influence on them. Would rate 3.5. I’d consider coming back to this in the future.

not much to say. im not very into house and this is a very simple early version of it. 5/10

I liked this. I particularly enjoyed it as background music while I work, which is almost certainly not what it is meant to do, but in this regard it was good. As a record to go dancing to, there are others I will always put ahead of this one.

I regret I didn’t make listening to this a priority now. Google wasn’t helpful in finding the album and it was a busy weekend. I enjoyed what I heard and I will listen again in time so for that reason high 3, low 4 ?

3.5 some really cool ones, some not so cool

Like alot of Electronica of this era, it just ages quite poorly. I suppose it's pioneering of modern electronica and as a lover of electronic music, this just isn't all that great but far from horrible. 6/10.

Proto avalanches found sound electronic music

This sounded witty and innovative and fun 30 years ago. Dated now but earns it's place on the list

What's That Noise? is one of the better electronica-based albums we've had, it must've sounded fucking amazing at the time because 25 years later this still feels fresh and creative and varied. Has great fluidity, some cool vocal guest stars, it's just let down a bit by the length, makes some spells seem overly repetitive or last longer than they need to, if it was a tighter edit I'd maybe give it a 4 but otherwise it's a solid 3.

This kinda worked for me.

Nice Coldcut album. I knew about half of the songs, some of which were hit singles at the time. The album sounds dated of course. I can still much appreciate the sound of pop music from the 80s, say until 87. But am less keen on that early 90s sound, it's hard to describe... (I also remember to be much impressed by their mix album ColdKrushCuts with DJ Krush and DJ Flood and it would be interesting to revisit that album.)

Crazy mix of electronic tunes. Quite catchy at times, and I sort of like the vocal contribution by Mark E. Smith.

I felt under the influence of ecstasy and was completely sober. What kind of music is this? How can the union of so many different sounds make you so "fast"? It's definitely not the kind of thing I hear every day, but it's definitely the first time I've heard something I can't understand. Therefore I am not able to apply a true assessment. I will give 3 stars

This was not good, but I enjoyed it. I really don't understand why this album was on the list. Very 80s / 90s sampling and mixing, also lyrically with "work together, sort the world out" stuff.

I like the playful approach of this album, not sure that there are any tracks that stand out to me, better than most electronic dance.

неплохой, летний альбом алкоальбом: текила с солью bbq

way too long but there's some fun stuff here

Pretty cool can’t rlly remember but think I liked it

Always thought that "People Hold On" was a Lisa Standfield song, instead of a song officially "featuring" Lisa Standfield. What's hilarious is that this "commercial" dance music hit single opening this record doesn't compare to anything else in it. Mostly because everything else sounds like a (somewhat dated) dada collage of bleeps, bloops, vocal snippets and off-kilter samples. That said, Coldcut has often been an interesting "electronic" act, and this debut is no exception. And you can sense the two Brits had a lot of fun recording it, at least. The thing is, *What's That Noise?* is definitely not up to the level of the essential LPs its usual fans compare it to. It's not as "focused" as a classic Kraftwerk album, and it's not as lively, driven and hectic as the Beastie Boys' *Paul's Boutique*, for instance. It lies in its own niche space, and dust seems to have covered said space for a while now. I guess that an album gathering guests as different as Lisa Standfield, The Fall's Mark E. Smith, Queen Latifah and Junior Reid probably deserves to be mentioned somewhere. The question is, where? If you think this short review has too many hairpin curves, this album is definitely not for you. Come to think of it, I *do* think this review of mine has too many of those 180-degree turns. Therefore... 3/5 for the purposes of this list. 8/10 for more general purposes (5+3) Number of albums left to review: 183 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 355 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 204 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 260 (including this one)

This album was a smooth listen that I really enjoyed. Dont think that I would listen to it again, but it was very enjoyable.

Couldn't listen not on Spotify

The album opens with promise, upbeat, poppy and infectious melodies and the record continues with a light, breezy electronic dance, club, house vibe. The music is fine, but after a while I was hoping it would end, not because it was bad or unappealing, it just got to be too much and too long. This might be a good album to spin at a party, get people up dancing and schmoozing, but at the same time, if you play it long enough it might be a fast way to clear the room when you want everyone to leave.

Remember albums? Things that were 35-45 minutes long? Not this thing. Let's make it over an hour, with 2 extra mixes that were just as repetitive. "Stop That Crazy Thing" would have sounded like a guy with brand new looping software tech if not for Junior Reed. In fact, most of the featured performers really took the songs to another level. But I really did not need two versions of "Stop That Crazy Thing". That really got annoying after awhile. Top tracks: "My Telephone," "Smoke Dis One".

Coldcut come in at the right place and at the right time with this musical patchwork boasting some of the mighty names of pop, reggae, indie and hip-hop. Although very of its time and place, one could sense the vibe emitted from the grooves within. Is it a masterpiece? No but it is certainly worthy of the title it wields. https://youtu.be/l13T8AboN7U?si=06nNNFhoNqLe9EZL Favorites: People Hold On, Fat (Party and Bullshit), (I'm) In Deep, My Telephone, Stop This Crazy Thing, Doctorin' the House.

Tää oli vähän tällänen sekasotku. Välillä aika nasta ja välillä tosi rasittava. Ekalla kuuntelulla en saanut oikein muodostettua mielipidettä joten lykätään nyt kolmoseen ja katotaan nouseeko vai laskeeko uusilla kuunteluilla. 3/5

Hauska funk?-sekoilu. vähän epätasainen ja liian pitkä, mutta lähellä nelosta.

A bit of a nightmare to get the original tracklisting together. Anyway there were some bangers but also some tracks that made me scratch my head. I guess it averages out to a 3.

Another fun little electronic record. Definitely wouldn’t say you have to hear this before you die, but I found myself enjoying the vibe of the aged production

AI 90s alternative rock 8 months ahead of it’s time.

I get it pushed things forwards, but it's aged less well. People Hold On sounds so 1988 it's painful. Later on, Mark E Smith is a highlight, as is the stuff where it's celebrating a more DJ led approach. Bin the housey stuff, keep the bizarre and hip hippy.

Really liked this, and if it it was on Spotify I would have spent more time with it.

this one isn't on Spotify, so i can't listen :(

This a pretty good example of this kind of music, I think. Good 3/5 for me. I wouldn't choose this, but it's not bad.

I was a bit nonplussed listening to this, but when I realized it was released in 1989, yeah, fair enough! It's undoubtedly been influential on a bunch of stuff I like, even if getting through it now feels like a bit of a chore. Hip-hop, trip-hop, turntablism and house have all gone on to do more interesting things, but it's good to see where it came from, I suppose! Fave tracks - "(I'm) In Deep" for the Mark E Smith cameo!

Unavailable via Spotify.

Finally some decent EDM. Some real fun tracks on here. ***NOT ON SPOTIFY***

it was fine. kinda just made me wanna listen to erik b and rakim though. it was interesting to see this sort of early style of "electronic" music for lack of a better term, knowing what it would evolve into later on. 2 feels too long because it wasn't actively bad so i will give it 3.

I think I enjoyed most of this. Its not my cuppa tea at all but enough to appreciate the good bits. Its a bit mental which I quite like. I imagine Jez from Peep Show wanted to sound like this when he wrote that ‘This is outrageous’ song. Cant see me coming back but glad I heard it. I think.

Thought this was pretty good mostly. Really interesting and must've been pretty novel in 1989? I thought"stop this crazy thing" and "smoke dis one" with queen latifah in were the best tracks. 3.5. probably won't be back but I enjoyed it

Dance. Funny.

A little disappointed that this is a dance record. I was hoping for a weirder ride. That said, it was suitably bouncy and wasn't terrible.

Fun album to play in the background.

Quite a Suprise. Joyous and fun. Worth listening to more. Only could find it on YouTube music, and not on my preferred streaming services. If it comes across my desk again, I will listen again. It's fun.

Ahhhh it didn’t load… listened to their other music and enjoyed

Interesting

I had to go to YouTube to listen to this and I’m very conflicted about what to rate this. On one hand, I thought this got very obnoxious after over an hour runtime but on the other there were some really catchy beats that I really was enjoying while I played video games. However, even if I did enjoy it I usually dock a star for making me go out of my way to listen to a kinda lame album, BUT it didn’t bother me as much since I wasn’t using my phone while I listened so idk if it deserves a 2 or a 3. Guess I’ll be generous.

I had never heard of Coldcut before. Interesting album. Very listenable but a little monotonous for my taste. Probably wouldn't listen again but I didn't hate it.

i couldn't find this album on Amazon or Spotify so I listened to Let Us Play instead. sounds like good background music or something to listen to with headphones, lots of stuff going on. i also didn't realize that they run the label Ninja Tune. their label has similar artists if you're into this kind of thing.

I'm ok with this. Nothing stands out but I can put it on repeat for hours in the background while I'm doing work - it's the right tempo to keep me focused. And may I say that I found it on YouTube, and there was not a single irritating blaring ad spliced into it to break up the rhythm. And for that I'm pleasantly surprised.

Surprisingly I hated this way less than I thought I was going to. Almost didn't bother with it since it's not on Spotify, but pleased with my decision to track it down.

After listening to the first song — I thought I was in for greatness but the following tunes never really matched up.

Ok I guess. Loved these guys on the Paid in Full remix.

Very interesting to read about the history between "Not Paid Enough" and "Paid in Full," - learned something new today. The beats are solid throughout.

I was gearing up for another "WTF is with all this UK band crap" but I actually got into this one.

Upbeat, fun and sometime slightly wacky hip hop dance thing. Not for me.

liked it; will never relisten 3

Coyld not listen to this one since it is removed from spotify, so I listened to their next album. Catchy beats with many familar samples and some lyrics.

As a dance album it's a good classic, albeit, at the time, it didn't make a big dent in the charts, and there are still a couple of misses on the album. Overall I quite enjoyed the album, it certainly opened with a great Lisa Stansfield track, and the brilliant Yaz featured on a track too.

Fun album that felt all over the place. Enjoyed the samples and scratches.

Coldcut. That's what that noise is

3/5 goodish but not enough

UK electronica of the era, fine background music, but objectively a snoozefest, *NEXT!*

Not on Spotify L

Pretty solid if not a little dated sounding. Unlike classic albums that sound timeless this one sounds exactly like the era it came from and not always in the best way.

•Not owned: YouTube (not on streaming platforms, probably because Tommy Boy was a disaster and legal cases have kept the label in digital purgatory) •Dedicated to sampling, this album picks from everything, from SNL to the telephone. Rips a little too much from Kraftwerk—aside from the telephone track, which Ralf und Co. did 3 years before, there are a handful of beats/grooves I’ve heard before…—but the experimental angle suggests exploration not exploitation. Ultimately, this experimentation obscures the album’s intention—does it want me to dance? or just come in its dorm to hear what it’s been working on all week?—but it’s still an interesting slice of time. •3.5/5

And here's another "worthy" album that cannot be found on my streaming service! I mean, come on! I should give it 1 star just because of that. 01) People Hold On - 8,5 02) Fat (Party and Bullshit) - 7,5 03) (I'm) In Deep - 7,5 04) My Telephone - 6,5 05) Theme From "Reportage - 7,0 06) Which Doctor? - 7,5 07) Stop This Crazy Thing - 7,0 08) No Connection - 7,5 09) Smoke 1 - 7,5 10) Doctorin' the House - 8,0 11) What's That Noise? - 6,0 TOTAL: 7,32 (73/100) I can see how this inspired the future artists (Avalanches, I'm looking at you). If I was little older in 1989, I would probably dig this.

Found on YouTube. Good house music from 1989, but the end of the album gets bogged down in long record scratching and sampling experiments. Overall a fine first 40 minutes or so, more appealing to me than most techno/dance music albums.

This wasn’t bad and I really liked the song with Mark E. Smith. However a lot of it seemed to blend together and overall it wasn’t really my thing.

Has its moments

they seem talented and their sampling is A level but it is just a novelty to me. having all those guest stars is pretty cool but i doubt I will ever take another listen.

Coldcut is one of the most important and influential UK electronic music artists. This house album expertly incorporates cut-up samples spanning, pop, funk, and hip-hip to create a genre bending sound. The music has a deep groove and features a diverse array of percussion that hints at a latin influence throughout. Overall, this was an enjoyable album, but like so many UK electronic records from the time, it was just too long.

Solid early 90s EDM, way ahead of its time but still grounded firmly in the time it was made. Just didn’t spark anything for me. 3/5 rave kids asking for Molly

First song is amazing then kind of slows down.

It's alright. There are some good grooves, but nothing that I get too excited about. 3 stars.

Second album in a row that's not entirely available on Apple Music, this one more difficult than the first because I had to cobble together what I could from a "best of" album, which ended up being only 5-6 tracks. That said, I dug three of those tracks. Never heard of Coldcut, but the style is fun. Electronic beatmaking, some of it even hip-hop adjacent. The grooves can be pretty funky. I wonder what the songs I missed were like? Favorite tracks: Doctorin' the House, My Telephone, Fat (Party and Bullshit). Album art: This is a really cool one, three little cartoon guys, the one in the middle looks to be a wizard with a walkman. The geometrical shapes and the framing of this is nice, no notes. Great cover. 3.5/5

Feels like an underground record with lots of (batshit insane) samples. Sometimes a bit harsh and crude but still there are a couple of songs I'm really digging. I'm torn between 3 and 4 though I think the more annoying songs weigh it down more than the bangers make up for it. Favourite songs: People Hold On, My Telephone, Not Paid Enough

Not on Spotify

This was a fun listen, though it kind of just faded into background music. Maybe not something I would put on often, but I would listen to this again for sure.

Not really my thing, sounds more like background noise. I liked the song that sampled Jetsons, George of the Jungle and Jungle Book, though. D+, can round up to 3 stars to be nice. Not being my thing doesn’t mean it’s bad.

Highly reminiscent of World Clique but way less dancey. 5/10

не нашла нигде! только несколько треков на ютубе. раритет... а так дэнс дэнс какой-то, ничего такого)

3.5 I don’t know how much I would have liked this in 89. A year and a half later I would live The Globe by Mick Jones but B.A.D. II had more of a traditional musical structure with electronica / hip hop elements added as opposed to this straight up electronica album. All that said, 35 years later I can appreciate what the fellas were doing here. The beats are fresh and energetic while the samplings are pretty decent.

This comes into its own particularly with some of the guest acts. But some of it (quite a lot if I'm honest) gets into that found noise faffery the remix boys so often succumb and which I find mainly annoying. The good outweighs the bad for me, but narrowly.

Cool. Kinda dated

Was cool but went on for way too long

alright

Funky, upbeat house music. Made me want to explore more of Coldcut

Disco no disponible en Spotify. No opinable.

Usually I find house music more annoying, this wasn't too bad. I didn't dislike any of the songs, it was a fun listen. But it's not my new favorite thing either.

I like some of Coldcut's later stuff - didn't even realize they went back this far. But this early material, as innovative as it may have been, doesn't quite cut it for me.

good vibes but it can get repetitive

*Listening note* This was not available on Spotify but could be found on Youtube. Interesting samples but not likely to listen to it again.

Not on Spotify so no idea.

Had not heard of the band or, I believe, heard any of their music, so as always it's lovely when this project introduces me to something new. It's a creative approach they take here, and most of the songs are infused with superb grooves and interesting vocals, both in performance and sometimes lyrically. I am re-listening right to "Smoke 1", which I particularly like, and it features Queen Latifah on lead vocals. I love her! Overall, nicely engaging and interesting album. Very cool. I will have to explore their other work.

Pretty good beats.

This one kind of blew my mind. I was big into Coldcut and Ninja Tune during the trip-hop era of the mid-90s, but I never knew how long they had already been around, much less that their first album was this kind of late-80s Lisa Stansfield-type house. But they also got Mark E. Smith and Queen Latifah on there as well? Weird. I can't really listen to this era of music because it just sounds extremely dated and reminds me too much of middle school. It was interesting to learn about Coldcut's roots, but yeah, I think I'll stick with Let Us Play.

This was really fun. It's especially impressive that it came out in 89. Just a little too long 3

Funky and fun. 3 stars.

Ça brassait, un peu long mais j'ai aimé le bibe. 3.8

really not bad. je sens que ca l'a influencer par ses différents sons. un peu long par exemple. aurait pu avoir une meilleure note si écourté 6/10

Not really something I see my self revisiting but it was pretty enjoyable b

I find this genre so boring! 🥱 Also, too many samples.

pretty damn good

Another album not on Spotify so had to listen on YouTube which doesn’t give the full experience, I enjoyed this good dance album using samples one I’d come back to if it was available on streaming, so would agree this deserves to be on the list.

This LP was fine, if a little long. It thrives mainly on its unlimited energy, tapping into a constant but varied rhythmic flow to keep things moving at a pounding tempo. Some of the melodic leitmotifs got old quick, and some tracks were a bit too similar to one another, but I got some good work done while this was on and didn't hate it so by 1001 standards it's solid for sure.

House 100% 80's.

Album not available, enjoyed some of the tracks

Wow, I don't know if I've heard an album so completely of its era, as much as this album is. Generally a solid 3, but I really liked "(I'm) In Deep" with Mark E. Smith. Quick moving, housey/clubby, peppered with random blips and samples. A bit silly at times, but it was fun. Not available on Spotify, but easily found on YouTube. Fave Songs: (I'm) In Deep, Stop This Crazy Thing, Which Doctor?, Theme From "Reportage," My Telephone

It has its moments, but I found myself waiting for it to end.

2nd October 2023 Listened on the 4th while sorting the house. Perfect housework music which will have given this a higher score than it otherwise might have got.

The first song sounded like disco which had me worried but they then went off on a couple of electronic tangents that were quite good and had cool percussion. They then dabbled in some areas that were less interesting.

“People Hold On” is a classic track, a great pop/club crossover. I was hoping at least one critic would mention the socially-conscious lyrics, like house music’s answer to Marvin Gaye, but no luck – instead all they talk about is Lisa Stansfield “belting” it out. “Not Paid Enough” or at least Coldcut’s remix of “Paid in Full” was also ubiquitous back in the day and was a masterclass in sampling, though it doesn’t seem to be listed as a track on the album, just on the YouTube version – possibly they had issues getting paid by Eric B & Rakim? Anyway, a number of the other songs I found a bit show-offy, like they were trying to out-sample their competitors, which leaves the music sounding a bit too fractured up for me.

Sample-lastiges Electronica-Album mit Gesangsfeaturen. Mal funky, mal Disco, mal HipHop - insgesamt spaßig und cool zum Nebenbeihören.

Coupdn't listen in Aus.

Hyvää musiikkia oikein mahtaavaa... sample albumi knspetri hullu puhelin konspti puhelin sanoo ring irng.. hello whos there HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA PUHELIN WHOS THERE HAHAHAH Kysyy sii skuka siellä toisella puollella puhelinlankoja.. uskomattoman avant garde... eclevctric...

Another British electronica album? Surprise surprise. Kinda hard to find what exact version to listen to since youtube has a different listing of tracks than wiki. It's at least varied enough that makes it interesting. Still very dated but it had some charm that made it better than the other bland EDM stuff on this list.

reminds me of louis and his style of music. not really my vibe, but it's interesting

Spotify doesn't have this album, and I'm too lazy to go find it on another platform, so I can't accurately rate the album. I did find another album they made in the late 80s (Some Like It Cold) and listened to that... they created a pretty nice blend of the 80s sound with early 90s hip hop beats, even got some reggae and latin vibes in there at different points. It got a little weird and/or monotonous at a few points, and I'm not sure exactly when I would listen to this music, but overall I liked it.

Estuvo mejor de lo que esperaba.

Some ok stuff on here

I prefer Coldcut’s later work. But this a fine album nonetheless.

British DJs. Its not bad, but I'm partial to electronica from the early 90s. Honestly I would probably give it a higher score if I hadnt had to listen to like 100 albums by mediocre british artists on this list already. 3/5

I've read some reviews from people calling this revolutionary and influential, and I can understand why, as I can't disagree with the fact that the sampling can feel ambitious. However, this is not the only point I agree with. As much more people have pointed out, this things is terribly dated house. Except from the fun opening "People Hold On", the rest of the album is just incredibly bland beats with a substantial lack of catchy melodies. Not to say that there aren't, as the already mentioned first track or maybe some lines in "My Telephone" are infectious, but overall, it fails. On top of that, the songs are also quite lengthy considering the amount of repetition there is. The tracks range from three and a half to six minutes, which are certainly the standard lengths for any song, but as said, repeating boring stuff while always make things feel stretched. So in the end, very forgettable album.

Kind of a lame electronic / dance music album. Nothing very interesting, just a lot of beeps and boops

Maybe this was cutting edge at the time? Just doesn't seem like a "must hear" to me. Not terrible, but not exactly good, either.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is an electronic dance album. Nothing particularly special. Unfortunately this album is not on Spotify so had a lot of trouble listening to this. Did not get through the whole album because of that. Wouldn't seek this out again even if it was on Spotify though.

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Stop This Crazy Thing, Smoke Dis One While listening, I recognized a ton of different samples that I've since heard in numerous other songs - mostly hip-hop - over the years. That's really cool, but it's also the extent to which I can connect with this music. Its repetitive, dated, and kind of boring. Did I mention it's repetitive? There are a handful of interesting tracks. Stop This Crazy Thing is catchy, and Smoke Dis One features Queen Latifah, which was interesting. I just don't think I can see myself listening to this in the future.

not on spoti

Thus feels like listening to a boring rerun of / Late 80s and early 90s top of pops episodes

An album so influential that Coldcut couldn’t be bothered to put it on their Spotify account. Took me a few weeks to get around to it, and I’m definitely not regretting putting off listening to it. It’s tolerable, goofy electronica with way too many random samples jammed in at every opportunity

Pretty average house album overall, even if the vibes are good and its got its charm. The songs are pretty repetitive and mostly just go on and on for too long, and so does the album overall.

It started off strong. "A 4 star album, woah, this is fun" I think to myself. Little did I know, it'd turn shit later on and I'd rate it a 2.😔💔

Very self-aware - What IS that noise? It’s a DJ album mixing and sampling sounds for far too long. I don't need a 50 minute album of this. Still better than some of the albums on this list. 2⭐️

312/1001 Coldcut - What's That Noise? Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ Not on streaming. Made it to 45 minutes with all of the ads. Wasn't enough for me musically to continue. Gave up.

People Hold On

2 - not for me

This wasn't on Spotify so had to listen elsewhere. Didn't get all the way thru but not the biggest fan

Not sure I like this

Inte min typ av musik.

Görs för få låtar om kommunikationsmedel idag.

5/10 - Overused synth and sampling but some catchy songs. note not available on Spotify due to too many sampled tracks without licensing so listened via youtube

Soul, Disco, 1989 -> 2

Chill enough but I’ll prob never listen again particularly given inaccessibility

Sounds like it belongs on the soundtrack of a middling snowboarding game on the PS1.

Not for me.

Felt like a bit of a waste of time....

Album title is perfect

Way too long. First track recognisable, the rest has that very dated production I don't vibe well with.

Just not for me

It has a place and that place is the dance floor. This was not a sit and listen album.

House, 1tl People hold on

An excellent question, that album title. It’s not a noise I enjoyed. Yet another DJ record. Meh

Way too long and unbelievably dated. I sincerely did not like this one.

I'm really fond of coldcuts dj mixes but this just doesn't work that well for an album unfortunately.

A sampledelica-sounding dance album that doesn’t really make me feel like dancing, or gather much interest at all. The grooves are meh, the songs with vocals just don’t land for me, and it sounds dated. Would like to better understand why it was included, because it doesn’t seem particularly significant. Not unpleasant, just meh…

Hypnotic mess of crazy samples and late 80isms

I am probably being extra negative because I had to listen on YouTube. But idk. This had some decent moments but mostly I just wanted it to be done.

572/1001 17.03.2026 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

eh. pretuctucasto za mene, nedostaje mi nešto, nije mi bilo dosljedno dobro. premda mi valjda ne bi smetalo da svira u nekakvom bircu il klubu

I bet this music would be great live and in-person. On the album though all the songs sound basically the same.

This was actually kind of fun to listen to. I liked it more than I thought I would. A major knock was that it’s not on any streaming services, so I had to listen on YouTube with ads.

Very 80s, sample-heavy hip hop and dance remixes. Not really sure what makes this album so special, but I guess it's listenable. But one recommendation - do not listen to it on a platform with ads... it will be hard to tell where a song ends and an ad begins! - Heard before? I haven't even heard of this band before. - Will I listen again? No. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? No.

By 1989, this was already sounding kind of stale. The beats and samples don't change up enough to end up being any more than tired and boring club music. The first track sounds like if C&C Music Factory came from a disco in the very early 80s, but not as fun as that might sound. After that disco track, things settle into a different genre, Electro. My Telephone sounds a little more funky, but it's still recycling new wave grooves from 5 years earlier. Not Paid Enough brings enough funk to groove with, but most of the credit goes to the looped sample of a famous drum track. This is fine for the club (is it really?) but for casual listening, there's not much of substance to savor.

it’s alright

Never heard of them before. People Hold On: 7/10 Kinda catchy. Fat (party and bullshit): 6/10 (Im) in Deep: 5/10 My Telephone: 6.5/10 Theme from “Reportage”: 4/10 Which Doctor! 3/10 Stop this Crazy thing: 3.5/10 No Connection: 3/10 Smoke dis one: 3/10 Not paid enough: 3/10 What’s that noise: 3/10

Maybe a little ahead of its time. This 'album' might come up nicely on Spotify but other music services don't have it. I had to find each song individually. Some interesting sounds in there.

It’s ok

What is that noise?? 3/10

The late 90's was wild. The trend for more is better has some merit and spawned some fun stuff but hasn't aged well. Also the improvements in technology that allowed things to be more easily cut up and remixed allowed us to have things like this and DJ shadow. I dont have anything against this, but its not a particularly brilliant album, just a good example of a time and place.

Sometimes I wonder if the people who made the record ever look back on it and say, "yeah, we were young, having fun, doing drugs, messing about. This album we made really wasn't that good."

Cold cuts is an electronic dance music duo and their work is not on streaming services. There is no doubt that they are an early influence for what would ultimately be the 90s dance music scene (one I am not particularly fond of). They benefit from features, including Queen Latifah on this record, but the music ultimately is dated, and you can tell. There are sections of scratching and sampling that, since this record has been released, have been honed and perfected. There’s no denying their influence as pioneers in the genre, but this simply was not for me.

They were too busy figuring out if they could, that they didn’t stop to think if they should.

Not for me

This one already wasn’t doing much for me musically, and then I had to hunt it down on YouTube since it’s not on any streaming services. That alone knocked a star off. If I have to go out of my way to find an album, it better be worth it. This wasn’t. The music itself just didn’t click. Nothing stood out, nothing made me want to replay a track, and it all kind of blurred together.

I found some of the album interesting, but it was a lot of noise. It was basically just sample after sample, so it wasn’t my favorite.

< the Beatles

The first few tracks I really vibed with, but my the mid point of the album, I was pretty lost. There are some standout moments, but it wasn't a homerun for me. "Collage" is the perfect descriptor for this album, it felt like a bunch of pieces loosely glued together. Sometimes that structure makes sense and gels, but looking at the overall product doesn't always communicate something intelligible or interesting.

I really have a lot of respect for this type of sample-collage based music but my appreciation cannot be fully realized unless I take the time to sit down and listen to every single piece of music that is being sampled. I do not have time to do that for this one, so I’ll just assume it’s impressive and move on about my day. “People Hold On” is so so so so good though. Shit knocked my proverbial socks off.

Album 1023 of 1089 What's That Noise? - Coldcut (1989) Rating : 2.5 / 5 When I saw this one was tagged as “electronica,” I was already lining up the usual reaction - What’s that noise? More electronica I don’t enjoy. Turns out, that wasn’t quite fair. Once I got into it, it became clear this isn’t just another foggy, repetitive electronic album. There’s personality here. Some playful, skit-style narration, some genuinely fun moments, and beats that actually have some life to them. It doesn’t feel like the same sound looped endlessly - there’s movement and a sense that the group is having a good time with what they’re doing. This still isn’t something I’m going to rush back to or add to my favorites list, but it did something important: it made me pause before dismissing an album based on genre alone. That counts for something. A decent listen, and one that reminded me why giving an album a fair shot is part of the whole point of this project.

Seems like a pretty weak inclusion overall. Sure, you could call it the inception album for the cold cut/ ninja tune legacy… enjoyable though

Had to listen on Youtube as not available on Spotify. Some goofy ass beats Fave track: Fat (Party & Bullshit)

A bit hard to get hold of for some reason. In 1989, the first track especially was definitely a kind of blueprint for a lot of the Eurodance that followed. Simple, programmed rhythms, off-beat keyboards, powerful female vocals, mediocre rapping and scratching, awkward samples, and cringey lyrics... It's all here. Takes me right back even though I've never (consciously) listened to any of this. Can rightfully be called genre-defining. So maybe... the world would have been better off without this? That's maybe a bit meaner than strictly necessary, but suffice to say that on the whole, this wasn't an enjoyable listening experience for me.

Some undeniable skills on display, but it dragged on a little. Probably not helped by having to listen on YouTube.

People Hold On is great. Did not enjoy a hour of this. First time the YouTube ads have been welcomed. Feels like some PEDs are needed for this one.

Very 80s

Just kind of a pastiche of noises. Probably more interesting in the timeframe it came out.

Error 404. Had to dig, did not strike even pyrite.

I’m not sure which is more sad. The fact that this album is on this list or the fact that I actually remember it being played at various college parties. I always thought it was a band trying to sound like C&C Music Factory or Jesus Jones. Which is never a good idea.

Ok I guess this album isn’t on Spotify, so I listened to some adjacent recordings from them. Fairly sure I got the picture.

3.5/10

These songs really didn’t need to be this long. Way too repetitive but has a couple of bangers

First thought: this is classic hip hop with techno beat. It sounds like C+C Music Factory. Second thought: Fat (Part and Bullshit) was sampled by Terminator X on the Anthrax album Attack o the w Killer B’s for the song I’m the Man ‘91. As the tracks continued, I swear I had heard many of these songs before but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out where. The track Smoke 1 with Queen Latifah was a change of pace that added a little street flair back in. From a historical perspective, this album has so much influence on later works, however, insofar as modern relevance, I don’t know if this album endures the test of time.

Another hour of painful electronica. I relate strongly to the green figures on the cover, crying with my hands over my ears. This only gets an extra star for a nice feature from Queen Latifah.

Very 80s, a little dated now, not a bad listen as a one off but not something I'll come back to in a rush

An hour of basic-ass repetitive electronic music from 1989. I’m so stoked. I’m pumped dude.

Oh my... What's that noise? For sure! At least it's not "that" noise I listened to yesterday, Lightning Bolt's Wonderful Rainbow, but this album is not good at all. At least it's listenable. For that, two stars. I think from yesterday's album I can only go up, so maybe I'm being generous. Take advantage of that, Coldcut, and take my rate, because there is no other way I will listen to this album ever again, and if I do... Well, maybe you won't get two stars. What a boredom!

estuvo chidito al principio, pero chale, se empezó a poner bien pesado hacia el final

A couple of fun songs but overall a boring selection of sample-based dance music.

I didn't have a lot of time to listen to this album today, and I found after the first side that there wasn't much reason to listen to much more. Also I was only able to listen via YouTube and that made it more irritating with having ads in between, as well as sometimes during, songs. Had I been enjoying the album more, I wouldn't have cared about the time issue, or even the irritation of the ads. I liked the first song well enough, but the next few were just not that interesting or fun to listen to. That's about the best I can say.

Really fun at times But feels like it drags on other times

Listened to a few songs but album wasn’t available on Apple Music

This is the sound of the 90s, however, this time it is from 1989.

Not for me. 2/5

Y'a des p'tits bouttes pas pire pis des longs bouttes poches. 2.49 étoiles

I didn't like it very much. I'd use it as background music or, probably, I'd have enjoyed it more while dancing, eheh! Never heard something like this. It's kind of an alternative electronic music

Couldn’t find the album on Spotify so I listened to the tracks I could find. They were quite annoying and I don’t think album would have been any better

Very few thoughts on this

My experience of this album was not improved by the interruption of four Youtube songs per track on average. In fairness if I was a streaming service I wouldn’t go out of my way to make this stuff available either. Honestly not anywhere near as terrible as any of several other hour-long electronica albums this generator has put me through so far, though

What’s That Noise? Where’s the Album? Had to go down a few rabbit holes to listen to this album. Wasn’t quite worth the effort.

OK, it's not on streaming. No problem, I'll dust off the old YouTube. 64 minutes long? Hmmm, pushing it perhaps but let's see what this is all about then... ...what we have is a house album that sounds every bit its age. Apparently these lads were pioneers of pop sampling in the 1980s and one of the earliest EDM acts that gained popularity in the UK, but I've never so much as heard of them. Has anyone? Well, at least I've found something that my Mum might like...

Encore du techno...

Excellent question! The other possibility for an apt title could have been: Why Is This So Long?

Sounds like the music Ross makes in friends.

vissa goa beats eller vad det kallas men annars inget kul.my telephone var kanske bäst

Naslovnica mi je kjut, pojma nimam kdo so to. Prvi komad ("People Hold On") & prva misel: o fak, 1 uro in 4 minute tega morm poslušat zj? Na večer, k bi sam rada en pir spila, probala do konca pogledat Halloween, k me je včer po 40 minutah v film zmanjkal k kretena & bla mal chill? Sicr komad sploh ni slab. For the genre it is, it is quite good. "My Telephone" ma skoz not samplane taprave zvoke takratnih telefonov. "Theme from "Reportage"" je kr insane, sm vesela, da je sam minuto in pol, ker je kr a lot. V "Stop This Crazy Thing" slišm sample od Run DMC, pa očitno iz nekega Tarzan filma? Pa The Jetsons! Ha! "Smoke 1" ma kr Queen Latifah na vokalu? Kul. (Njen komad v Chicagu je neki najboljšga ever.) "Not Paid Enough" mi ma tud en kup znanih samplov & na tej točki ugotovim, da poslušam US verzijo albuma, namesto originalen UK release, kjer tega komada sploh ni... Ah, ja. Ponavad ciljam na originalno verzijo, zj je kar je. Če prav vidim, se sam na konc zj razlikujeta mal. Tko da, poslušam še "What's That Noise?" (Ki kar livea up to its name), k bi mogu bit na UK zadnji komad, pa poiščem komad, ki ga kle ni blo & ga je zamenjal prejšnji. Tko bom basically mela izkušnjo UK releasea. Evo, še "Doctorin' the House". Mogoč bi blo vseen, če ne bi.

More useless dross from they youth of the British Gen Xers who compiled this list.

Ret sjov plade, ukompliceret. Ikke noget særligt men overhovedet ikke dårligt. Hører det til på listen...?

Scratch my shit up!

Not my thing

This felt longer than it was, and that's probably not a great sign. It's not baaaaaaaad, but it's not that great to my ears either. I can take late-80's early-90's dance music/samples/rhythmic beats in doses, and this was too big a dose.

Somewhere within all the noise of this album I found myself nostalgic for the age of the landline home telephone? I still remember about 4 telephone numbers from my childhood which is surprising to me given the state of my mouldy grey matter. 2.5

Nothing special here. Grating vocals, predictable beats, annoying vibe. The bad side of 80s music which you have heard a thousand times before. This was not relevant even in 1995, let alone 2025. Has no place on this list. Blah.

Not on Apple Music. Listened on YouTube more passively than other albums

Bit disappointing

Couldn’t find it on Spotify

The album isn't on Spotify, but several of the tracks are. A House album. I wasn't really a fan at the time, and it still doesn't do anything for me. Features "People Hold On" and "My Telephone" with Lisa Stansfield, plus "Doctorin' the House" with Yazz.

Nothing much to write home about here, just generic late 80s house music you can tune out to. There's no real profound statements, just an hour of club-ready electronica. Kind of like a less memorable KMFDM or Primal Scream. So that's that noise from Coldcut I guess, not much else to say. Sounds like all other club music of the time. 2.5/5

2/5 - This one wasn't available on Spotify, so I listened to their most popular songs instead. They were interesting! I didn't dislike them, but they were artsy/disjointed. I probably wouldn't seek them out in the future.

No es mi estilo, por lo que no rescataría ninguna canción de este álbum en particular. Sin embargo, me ha entretenido en diversos puntos.

Dance classic

~note this album was not available on Spotify so this review is for their album Some Like It Cold~ This annoyed me by the end

Not for me.

What a strange artifact of 1989! A real sense of fun and energy carries this charming LP. I particularly like the Mark E Smith feature with him rambling over the mic. Telephone has some hilariously delivered lyrics “hello?” “Who’s this?” It starts to drag by the end (at least on the US version which I heard.) It’s very loveable even if it’s good, not great.

Found on YouTube. Fun but wouldn’t choose to put on.

This is the 2nd album on the list I’ve had to go to YouTube for, and the version I listened to appears to be the US release, rather than the UK release and there appears to be a few key differences, I gather Doctorin’ the House was a big release so since it was missing, I sought it out also. This is 80s house music, lots of guest vocalists, and it’s one of those cut and paste sample albums, crafting all sorts of samples together - maybe this was influential and I’m not averse to this sort of music. There were elements I liked but the album was too long and I got a bit bored, it’s probably not for sitting down to listen, more for a party or the club. It sounds very of its time, I don’t think it stands the test of time but can understand the appeal it will have had.

OK, this is the first artist on the list, I've never heard of before. From the get-go, seems like a classic sampled house style. Reading upon this, seems like they were an influential UK electronic band in bringing Hip-Hop into UK's mainstream and contributed to Big Beat scene. So I get the influence, but at the same time it's kind of boring after a few tracks so far, a bit of a cheesy 90s house feel. I like "My Telephone" so far, and intro track was alright. I want to skip quite a few tracks on this one already. This just doesn't seem on the same level to me as some other UK electronic acts of the time. Not bad at all but not a masterpiece either in my opinion, an average 2.5/5.0. And I'm pretty sure this is not first sampling albums by miles, David Byrne's and Eno's collab is way more interesting and creative than this. Interesting takeaway from this is that seems like Eric B & Rakim might have based their Paid In Full from track 10 on this album.

People Hold On"- 3 "Fat - 2 "(I'm) In Deep" - 2 "My Telephone" - 3 "Theme from "Reportage""- 2 "Which Doctor?" - 1 "Stop This Crazy Thing" 4 "No Connection" – 3 "Smoke Dis One" – 4 "Not Paid Enough" – 3 "What's That Noise?" – 2 "Beats & Pieces" – 2 "Stop This Crazy Thing" – NO SERIOUSLY STOP NO NO NOOOOO

People Hold On"- 3.5 "Fat - 2 "(I'm) In Deep" - 2 "My Telephone" - 3 "Theme from "Reportage""- 1.5 "Which Doctor?" - 2 "Stop This Crazy Thing" - 4 "No Connection" – 3 "Smoke Dis One" – 3 "Not Paid Enough" – 3.5 "What's That Noise?" – 2 "Beats & Pieces" – 2.5 really wanted to like it too avant garde for my tastes

This is not the album I would recommend to someone who is trying to stave off a migraine (as I was today). It was very… noisy.

Okay, it’s wild that this was made in 1989. It’s very ahead of its time. That said, it’s not terribly listenable for me, someone who doesn’t really dig electronica. I respect it and see why it’s here though

Another album of “you had to be there to understand the significance” Nothing great. Telephone was a fun song to bop around to

Beep Boop Bee this is not for Me

It was good for me to listen to this for the historical and educational component. Wasn't the kind of thing I enjoy assss much though

Couldn't listen

Highlight Song/s: People Hold On This one sadly isn't on Spotify. Anyways, this is some cool dance music. I have previously heard "People Hold On" from Grand Theft Auto IV, It did sound familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it until it JUST clicked. It kind of went all downhill from "People Hold On." Not a fan of the futuristic sound or the production. The first track kind of mislead me, thinking it be straightforward Disco. But no! Completely obnoxious sampling instead is what you get. Complete utter garbage, just the same thing going on and on for 5 minutes straight. The last couple tracks did it in for me.

#683. What's that noise? I'm not sure, but there sure is a lot of it. 2/5: meh

Day 17 and already the third release I've never heard of before! The duo's label Ninja Tunes is a label I own a release from though, The Bug's London Zoo, which might better suite this albums spot on the list. Or maybe Eno & Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts which this album wishes it could be. Even though this journey is mostly about exploration, I'll be glad to get junk like this out of the way early on. I realize I'm being unduly harsh so let me just say it's cool that this duo got Mark E. Smith and a teenaged Queen Latifah on the same LP. I'd like to know the story behind their discovery of her. She's the highlight of the record and I guess she doesn't even appear on the initial UK release.

Was meh, wouldn’t listen to again
