Reviews (page 3 of 8)
really good album had a really solid sound that unified the album. Would be a greeat album to just listen to. they really nailed the tone being a mix of melencoly sad but bright at times too.
With my first listenings, I wasn't sure if I liked this album, but when I had the opportunity to sit down and calmly listen to it, I did enjoyed it quite a lot. This album is wonderful, sweet and filled with beautiful melodies, interesting lyrics with very positive messages for those who are abused (specially women) and rich instrumentation like multiple guitars, flutes, horns, piano, electronics, bells and more. If I had to pick the songs that I liked the most, I would choose 'Electornic Renaissance' for how different it is from the rest, 'We Rule the School' for its beautiful flute and 'My Wandering Days Are Over. Nevertheless, it goes without saying that I don't think there's a bad song in here. My only complain would be that the vocals feel a bit rough sometimes. It is hard to tell why, but I think it is because of how it was recorded and his sibilant voice.
Donovanesque at times, their LGB incorporated songs grew on me. The hooks dug a bit deeper the second time through. 3.5
For when you're feeling a little twee. Wonderful indie debut. It makes me smile.
Really stuck on whether I prefer this or *If You're Feeling Sinister*, which was only a couple weeks ago in this project, but they're both excellent listens. fav tracks: Electronic Renaissance, Expectations, I Could Be Dreaming
Very good
A really pleasant pop album. Some very clever lyrics and truly great composition especially on My Wandering Days Are Over, the cascading vocals and trumpet work so well together. I was surprised to read that the group had effectively formed during the recording of this album since it has such a clear direction with its sound and style. There are a couple of minor gripes I have about the album that aren't worth mentioning outside of justifying why I'm not giving this a 5. Supremely chilled, airy and very re-listenable. I am kicking myself for not listening to this much earlier. Highlights: The State I Am In, Expectations, My Wandering Days Are Over
Belle and Sebastian have such a nice way of singing about some fairly dark stuff. The tunes are so lovely and simple and the instrumentation matches his voice so well. This one doesn't include a lot of the songs I personally like of their output, but it is a really great album to listen through.
Much more solid than I was expecting. I love the experimental use of electronics here and the overall song quality. 7/10
Wild album cover but the songs aren't half bad!
I wasn't swept away but I liked it. It's a really specific style that doesn't always work for me, but it was still enjoyable. 3.5/4
Lovely stuff
Enjoyed that!
Surprisingly soothing and pleasant. Works formidably as background music when all you need is to relax.
I liked the sound of it and will listen again
Unlike the overly represented series of “we’ve never heard of you” UK bands we have had on this countdown, this band actually has talent and constructed a good album. There’s an early Mumford and Sons, Of Monsters and Men feel in this record which I dug. The signing is passable, not great. The musicality of the album makes up for that though, and the lyrics are decent. I really liked that the guitars were a bit harder than many which focus on a lot of acoustic playing. I see this band compared to Nick Drake, which I get to an extent, but the sound here is so much more full and complete, with a much better song construction. This was definitely worth the listen. I quite liked it.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this album based on the cover and band name. I felt I should probably know Belle and Sebastian, but I think I confused them with a different set of artists, as this was very different to what I thought it would be. It sounded a tiny bit like Neutral Milk Hotel (definite "milk theme" there?), and on that basis alone, I'm going with four stars. Maybe the milk was a little more watery than I would have liked, but "milk is milk" as the saying goes. I found the album never really goes anywhere; there's a slight change midway, then back to gentle indie with mumbly vocals. It's a pleasant journey nevertheless.
Almost an absolutely perfect album. Made my depression disappear for 40 minutes. Beautiful.
Very nice album, but not their best IMHO. Some obvious standouts, but I don't love this album loads. The State i am in might be there best ever song though? And there is some stiff competition there. 3.8/5
Bangin
3.5.
I really like some BS. Maybe the standout discovery of this list for me. Not quite up there with the one we’ve had already, but still enjoyed it. Simpsons: Yes
This took a few attempts to get into but once I found the right mood and weather it really hit me at how thoughtful and heartfelt it is
This was good, needs another listen I think
Pleasant indie folk rock.
I like Belle and Sebastian as a band (but I do feel like their lyrics got weirder and more fun in later albums). A solid debut album that’s a perfect little indie pop moment. Expectations and She’s Losing It were the standout tracks for me
A classic case of not judging a book by its cover. Don't get the album art but the sound is nice
Nice working music but didn’t blow my mind
Surprisingly enjoyable album, short and snappy with no songs I was pining to skip. Expectations, She’s Losing It, and Electronic Renaissance I could all see getting added to a playlist. Carries a Wes Anderson vibe I could see turning people away — but the layered sounds are too pleasant to hate on the value of being “hipster” to me.
little vignettes of peculiarly british, often mundane and always disturbing experiences wrapped in twee bouncy music which somehow makes the whole thing comforting.
Very somber and lyrically focused which is not my usual tone not in taste but as a current regularity listen but I throughly enjoyed it . The lyrical focus reminds me of not a very talented voice but an admired artist bob dylan !
Isn’t this that coffee chain? Perhaps the cover is featuring one of the baristas (or baristos; it’s 2025 you asshat) breastfeeding their new catfish. Haters will say it’s a stuffed animal and even if it wasn’t, you can’t breastfeed a fish. Well I say you don’t understand how high we can fly. Get enough edibles in me and I, a pudgy cis male can give birth to a pygmy hippopotamus. You’ll never understand the power of the mind. Anyway. Here’s Tigermilk. The State I Am In - Arkansas uhhh Missouri uhhh things your couch might say uhhh Oregon *DING DING DINNG* YEAHHHHHH. Oh buddy. I’m going to like this one. Not because he’s introducing his child bride to alcohol, you sicko, but because it’s soft indie with nice songwriting. Expectations - What a jaunty lil tune. Sorry “chune.” I thought this was English, but my ancestors just screamed in terror as these plucky youngsters are fae Glasgow. This is another very very nice song and if I can shoehorn some in unnecessary nationalism in there as well? It’s a good day. She’s Losing It - Almost reggae. Oh god. This is too Jason Mraz to start. The lyrics are interesting, and the I actually kind of like the horns. They remind me of Neutral Milk Hotel. The first “meh” song. You’re Just a Baby - Listen, I know you want to drive my Pontiac Aztek, Ethan but you’re 3 years old. The second you got that faux-leather steering wheel in your grubby little mitts, I could see the flashes in your eyes. I can see the visions of making a particularly wide right turn due to the poor turning radius of that whale-esque frame. I can picture you waiting for the news at the mechanic that the Aztek has had most of its parts recalled. A powerful vision, but E. You’re just a baby. Leave the motoring to the big boys (me). Now hand me my driving hat. And put down that socket wrench. Uhh a decent song. Electronic Renaissance - Cooler than anything Daft Punk has ever done in less than a minute. Congratulations. The sounds are quite nice here. Suffering a little bit from repetition syndrome but overall, a minor case. Jolly good show! I Could Be Dreaming - This song is beautiful. Such interesting instrumentation and a subtly beautiful melody. Very of the time, but a pinnacle of the ideas attempted at that time. All this writing and I COULD be dreaming about a new pope deciding to overhaul the hat etiquette and ushering in a new offshoot of Catholicism that is entirely based on how ornate your hats can be. Always the type of dream I wake up from in a cold sweat. We Rule the School - I would imagine. As a kid often picked last in my impressionable youth, imagine if I got to go play sports against 4th graders now?? I’d mop the floor with those dorks. A nice song. Gentle. Engaging. Good work. My Wandering Days Are Over - This is as good a time as any to say that the lyrics on this album have been great. So odd and intriguing. I don’t even need lyrics to mean anything in particular. It helps. But if you have phrasing that sticks, or words that spur thought when placed together, I’m a happy fella. This is a good one. I Don’t Love Anyone - what a journey. Buddy doesn’t love Christmas. Nothin. Waking up on a Saturday and thinking for a split second that you have work, but then remembering it’s Saturday? Buddy doesn’t even love that. Cold as ice. But then, he loves his family? What a cop out. Mary Jo - Ankther beautiful melody. This harkens back directly to 60’s “chamber pop.” I think. God I might start saying “twee” if I get carried away here. Better rein it in. Yeah this song was uhhh bitchin’. Wow. Alright! Yeah! HELL yeah!! Woooo. Yeah! Uh huh! Ok!! Alright! Woo! Alright everybody. Settle down. Listen. This was an album that I will absolutely return to. I imagine the enjoyment will grow upon repeated listens. This was excellent. Gentle atmosphere with excellent songwriting, fantastic lyricism and an eye to the future with two feet firmly entrenched in the influences of the past. Belle and Sebastian surpass the similarly named coffee brand in both quality and enjoyability. Oh shit! I’ve got to feed that Pygmy hippo. And restock on edibles. Can you wait here and hold my ornate crown and sceptre? You’re a life saver. 4 HIGHLIGHTS: The State I Am In, Expectations, I Could be Dreaming, My Wandering Days are Over, Mary Jo
This is a pleasant surprise, I kind of knew I needed to listen to Belle & Sebastian more, but just never got around to it, and I liked this a lot. It comes across as really earnest and vulnerable. A lot of these songs are kind of low fidelity, and the sound here is sort of baroque and pleasant, and I think it makes this album come across as small, and I don't mean it in a bad way. Like this is very intimate and personal feeling and this even comes through in the lyrics, like the content here is serious, but never crushing to the listener, with a lot of these songs focusing on little day to day sadnesses and embarrassments and some victories too. I also noticed that on a lot of these songs, the vocals sound *very* similar to Nick Drake, and I think it works here. It serves as a good stylistic complement to the songwriting and aesthetics on display here. And speaking of the songwriting, I like a lot of these songs a lot. Expectations, The State I Am In, She's Losing It, We Rule The School and Mary Jo are some highlights here, but most of the material works very well. I'd also like to acknowledge Electronic Renaissance which is one of the only real stylistic departures here, and its kind of warm, analogue synth sound fits in well here, it isn't as jarring as it should be and is actually one of my favorite songs. Overall, this is a really great collection of alternative pop songs. It feels like a lot of attention to detail went into this album, and the sound is just extremely warm and pleasant and earnest, it's kind of like a really heavy blanket, and I'm into it.
Lekker ontspannen albumpie
Cool 90's singer songwriter album, 3,5/5
I really adore this record. Whilst I think there are better Belle & Sebastian albums (this was only their debut after all) I do think there is something quite special about this one. There's some wonderful songwriting here and you can hear the influence of Nick Drake in particular on some of these tracks. Just a lovely listen from start to finish.
this was a good listen!! very Stone Roses esque throughout but definitely not a bad thing
Really enjoyed tgis mellow and sweet.
Wonderful, light happy daytime music.
all in all, I really enjoyed this. I'm more familiar with later Belle & Sebastian but this is clearly the start of their later magic. I found it more inconsistent than their later stuff but still good. Best track: She's Losing It Worst track: Mary Jo
A lovely run of albums with another classic for a long-term indie darling.
interesting, should relisten
Very good, nice to hear again after years - all of their albums have a few weaker songs though, weirdly.
If it bangs, it bangs. Good ass album if you ask me
I’ve always felt like I should hate Stuart Murdoch’s voice but iI don’t. I love his lyrical and musical sense. It always takes me at least 4-5 listens for any given Belle and Sebastian song to really sink in, but then they stick with me. This album less than others, but still a solid debut.
Though I always think of this band as "fey" or "precious," they also are really enjoyable, literate, and melodic. I like the little slices of Scottish school age/young adult life and Stuart Murdich is a fine songwriter.
I forget how good this band's output in the 90s and early 2000s is. Great debut, low budget but you'd never really know it, gorgeous arrangements and harmonies. Standout tracks for me are Shes Losing It and I Could Be Dreaming. Call them twee, call them precious, but its hard to deny their continued influence on indie pop/folk. Also clearly influenced by some groups i love, from Simon and garfunkel to Yo La Tengo
I like the later disco pop more than the twee folk
Surprisingly good, I would listen to it again.
This is much better. I really like Belle and Sebastian, as their music is like a sweet candy of indie-pop that you can savor for 40 minutes at a time. I don't always know what their songs are about, but I do know I enjoy the songs. As described in other reviews, the music is very cloying and I can see how it would not be someone's favorite kind of music. Still, I really enjoy it and if I have to listen to 45 different versions of the same electronica music then I should also get a Belle and Sebastian album as well. My favorite tracks are pretty much every single one. I often hear a song start out and am not sure I will like it, then it turns out the chorus is catchy and the music gets my foot tapping. A mid-90's gem of indie music.
Why is it is Belle and Sebastian and not Stuart and Stuart?
Interesting and chill
3.5 stars
Unique and interesting alt rock sound. Vocals are unusual but not bad
Wonderful memories
4/5 am i being generous?
This grew on me on second listen. The back half of the album was more engaging to me than the first with the stand out being We Rule The School
Veel vrolijker dan ik had verwacht op basis van die scène in High Fidelity. Prachtige liedjes.
Enjoying this more than Sinister (which I gave a 3). She's Losing It is a fun and great singalong. Just feels like its got more interesting instrumentation going on compared to Sinister. Still Charlie Brown-ass music though.
background chill vibe

Very interesting! That's the second album that it comes for me in this site, first one being the "If You're Feeling Sinister" released in the same year, and I got the same impressions than before. It's pop, it's indie, it's folk... still looks like The Stone Roses released an acoustic album, but a little more electric this time. Not perfect, but great album. 4 stars. In 1996, they're certainly were inspired...
A sweet album, with a crazy song in "Electronic Renaissance" - I would love if the whole album sounded like that song instead.
Nice
Really liked the soft, delicate approach here. Also, the winds section reminded me of the all-time classic Forever Changes. I always thought this band was boring, but is actually great.
Soft boy indie pop at it's finest. A mostly tranquil album driven by soft vocals, often sparse instrumentation, understated drums, gently strummed acoustic guitar. Great story telling and emotion driven lyrics. The synth and drum machine driven "Electronic Renaissance" is a great departure that comes just in time to keep the album fun and exciting instead of being same-samey front to back, and is definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album. The following track is a nice upbeat bop that is easily in my top tracks for the album as well.
I enjoyed this album a great deal. I have respect for antiquities of all kinds. It felt original, but by no means alienating. Vocals are wholly unique and instantly recognizable. I love the style they have here. It’s really comforting if you’re in that mood. Not their best, but very very nice. 4/5
Beautiful, whimsical, airy, indie pop! This was beautiful and I’ll investigate more of their stuff!
Classic indie album real quality
Really nice
Really liked this one, essentially 60’s style kind of like velvet underground but with a very distinct 90’s style especially with the electronic additions. Favourites: expectations, she’s losing it, my wondering days are over, I don’t love anyone. The flamenco inspiration on expectations was really cool, I thought all of the songs were well made but I just wasn’t a big fan of all of them. Overran 7/10.
Totally new to me and was pleasantly surprised. This picks up where nick drake left off but makes it a little more rockin if you can call it that. Seems like it’s best enjoyed as a whole album, it strikes a similar tone across the whole record. Light 4/5
Yeah definitely enjoyed this album.
Just had another Belle & Sebastian album a few days ago and enjoyed that one -- I liked this one too! Cool indie vibe
Love it, great bass playing. Also sounds a bit like TV Girl?
man i feel like such a hipster piece of shit every time i listen to belle and sebastian because god damn i do really like their music. this album reminds me a lot (in more ways than one) of a twee 90s version of donovan, which feels very much up my alley. they're just really pleasant, charming songs with solid production. a nice time to listen to. is it my favorite music of all time? no. but do i like it? yeah...
Cool sound
Their music always seems to grow on me massively after more listens, i except this one will too. Still loved it on first try anyway, their style of folk/indie rock is instantly catchy.
7/10…indie pop / britischer indie
Nice chill background music
Solid! (My reviews will hopefully increase in quality after deadlines...)
Lovely combination of folky and indie pop that appeals perfectly to me. I love the singers voice and the mix of tragic lyrics with upbeat music. Just a few uncomfortable lyrics and the weird tone shift that is Electronic Renaissance stop it from being a 5 for me. Favourite: She's Losing It or I Don't Love Anyone Least: Electronic Renaissance
A charming record, with beautiful, long, melodies, well-crafted lyrics, and lovely, minimal arrangements.
Favorite Track: The State I Am In
i was introduced to belle & sebastian the proper way: a mix tape from a weird goth girl a grade ahead of me in the early 2000s. i liked salinger and mcsweeney's and wes anderson so this shit was catnip to me. unfortunately they never had the good graces to give it a rest; they grew into a parody of their worst tendancies and we just grew up. "we rule the school" is the high point here, but the real dorks know their EPs were always better than their albums.
Never heard of them before this, but glad I have now. While I’m past this genre of music on repeat, I liked it a lot. Listened to it twice. Not gonna lie, the cover was a bit distracting on my screen.
Don’t remember too much, but remember enjoying it.
Enjoyed this much more than expected. Lots of fun tracks, good lyrics, soft singing. Never too loud or boring. Very interesting and well made.
Cool, varied and interesting production
Beetje irritante stem, maar verder goed
Belle and Sebastian have consistently occupied a peripheral place in my music listening habits, often falling into the category of music I will enjoy if it happens to be playing, rather than actively seeking it out. Their debut album, "Tigermilk," presents a blend of clever, reflective, humorous, and melancholic storytelling, all set against a backdrop of catchy and jangly indie-pop melodies. The craftsmanship is evident in the mostly catchy upbeat rhythms, which are beautifully enhanced by rich melodic vocal harmonies. The album opens with what may be its finest track, "The State I am In," foreshadowing their future work. Other notable tracks include "Expectations," "You're Just A Baby," and "I Don't Love Anyone." "Electronic Renaissance" stands out as an a odd-ball track, yet it does not detract from the overall listening experience. This album is a fun listen, being bittersweet and nostalgic, while also comforting and uplifting. It ranks among the finest indie-pop records of the 1990s that I have encountered. A must listen.
Getting this right after Nick Drake is mad. He must have been a huge influence on them
Smooth, goes on easy. Well put together and enjoyable! 4.2
Nice and easy.
A very rare find as a result of this list. How this has escaped me I will never know. Music that’s right down my alleyway. Reminds me very much of Roy Harper’s work. Will be added to my own collection soon. 4/5 21/2/25
I thought this album was really sweet, really pretty. A lovely autumn album.
Not my favourite B&S album but still pretty great. Some amazing songs on it for a debut album
all singers are great, lyrics are quite sad and very well writen. Favourite songs: expectations, she's losing it, electronic renaissance, I could be dreaming, we rule the school. Overall around 7/10
This group was totally unknown to me and what a pleasant surprise! This was chill and an enjoyable listen. I'd welcome hearing it again. The cover features a topless woman breastfeeding a stuffed tiger but oddly the question that popped up in my mind was, "Why is she sitting in a bathtub?" Lol
Pretty enjoyable chill indie pop. Reminded me a bit of Father John Misty and Sufjan Stevens. Standouts are "She's Losing It" and "I Don't Love Anyone".
A fun, upbeat album that I really enjoyed. Recording quality had some issues, but I did like the album, which is great for putting you in a good mood.
Unreservedly recommended. Different and interesting with gorgeous melodies.
This was a great album. So fresh and innovative and covering a pretty wide spectrum of their capabilities. Happy to be able to put this one in my rotation.
All B&S albums are beautiful in their own way. This one moves with the grace of a cat in a spacious, warm house. It sounds like their third or fourth album, doesn’t it? Composed, skillful, moving and confident. Get this: it’s their FIRST. That magic only comes from the earth and the air.
A blueprint for that hipster indie whispery vocals. I dig it when I’m in the mood
Love love love Belle and Sebastian. This is the third album of theirs that I heard, love the first two - If You're Feeling Sinister and Dear Catastrophe Waitress - love all the songs, loved the flow but this one wasn't as good, for me. The flow wasn't as good and the lyrics weren't really as impactful as the others I've heard before.
was a little twee at the beginning but got so good
4.5
Well for my first studio album in a while, Tigermilk was quite a nice surprise. The album incredibly chill, in fact, it was probably one of the most chill albums i have done for this project. The songs did mostly seem to follow the same formula being that of a folk pop rock formula but it wasn't really something i minded too much and it did help some of the more interesting songs stick out more. I did go into the album thinking that the production wasn't going to be all that good but after listening to it, i thought it was pretty alright. This album was actually a great surprise for me. Best Song: The State I Am In Worst Song: My Wandering Days Are Over
In the early 2000's I was a big fan of this band. We've parted ways since then but it was fun to listen to this again. It was my "sensitive boy" music phase. Tops for me on this album are: The State I'm In, Expectations, You're Just a Baby, I Don't Love Anyone.
Very chill album, with some incredible instrumentals and nice effects. Good beats and interesting vocals.
Quite lovely. Love Belle & Sebastian, though nothing stood out quite like their singles that I’m so fond of.
Well it's a Belle and Sebastian album. Ergo it is good. I don't know this one as well as the others. Mad how they just had their signature sound immediately.
Have had a couple of songs from this album on a few of my playlists so know them word for word - but have not gone back to the original album for many years. Whilst it is the dictionary definition of "Whimsy" I do really like it esp State I Am In / My Wandering Days. A high 4.
i rlly liked this album and the kind of alternative/folk kind of vibe to it
Having never listened to this full album, I always thought Belle and Sebastian were kind of boring. After giving this thing a spin, I've gotta say, I kind of dig it! It's still not what I would consider "exciting" music, but that's okay. I can hear a lot of inspiration for the next generation of indie acts. 4/5
Dreamy
Kurde, jakoś trudno napisać mi coś więcej o tym albumie. Nie bardzo wiem, co mógłbym powiedzieć. Podoba mi się. Tak najzwyczajniej w świecie. Lubię ten wokal z wosku i young age angst.
feiner, gemütlicher indie pop :)
Very cool precursor to some chamber pop music in the 2000s.
Sufjan and Steven
Few artists manage to deliver something truly good on their first album. Belle and Sebastian, for example, managed to do this with "Tigermilk". An album full of feelings that manages to create a different atmosphere with each track. The compositions here are exquisite and the melodies transport you wherever the Scottish band wants. It could be 5 stars, however (and this is my only complaint about the album), I don't understand why a 10-track album needs to be over 40 minutes long. Of course, this doesn't ruin the experience, but it's something to think about.
Weirdly like it. I feel like I should hate everything about it, but the lead singers weird lisp situation is kind of charming. Songs have very nice melodies and instrumentation never does too much. Also really fond of some of the experimental bits like on Electronic Renaissance. Yeah, good stuff. Fav Songs: The State I Am In, Electronic Renaissance, Mary Jo
Everything you expect from this band. A little twee, but lovely and clever. It’s been cold and rainy where I live and this vibe just fits, somehow. Love this album.
booba
Flashing back to downstairs in the old original 13th Note on Glassford Street in Glasgow, Belle & Sebastian were releasing new EPs every other month and life was simpler, or I was simpler, but I digress... Upbeat, but not overly jaunty, twee, but not overly cutesy, just a chill laid back jam session in your living room with old friends.
Nice, calm, and enjoyable.
It was interesting
Dreamy,
I was eating this one up. I loved the laid back feel of the tracks here. There's a few moments that are cool but very out of place. I loved Electronic Renaissance, but it really does not fit on this album. Favorites were She's Losing It, We Rule the School, and I Don't Love Anyone.
I enjoyed this - a lot of good songs. Just on the right side of a whiny voice, with good lyrics
I have never heard this before and it's really good. Very good full sounding music that is a little bit experimental without being annoying. Sort of contemplative music. I will definitely be listening to this again.
Decente, tranquilito
Twee, as others have said, but very enjoyable. Reminds me of Nick Drake.
Prachtig album, af en toe echt goede teksten, en goede muziek. Soms wat eentonig.
Enjoyed this a lot
4 stars because I would listen to this again and again.
Decent indie pop album with some 60s whisper singing and very lesbian vibes on several songs.
Surprisingly nice and pleasant album. Easy listening that reminded me at times of Ezra Koenig/Sufjan Stevens/Cat Stevens/Lou Reed/etc. A band that I haven't listened to before but certainly would again on the right occasion. 7.5/10 (3.75/5)
Aways found B&S a bit limp-wristed and watery at the time, but it's such a perfectly evocative sound of the mid-90s, but somehow it has a Nick Drake-esque timelessness.
Like this new-to-me album quite a bit!
Уютный альбом с одной из моих самых любимых песен всех времен и народов. Альбом сто процентов недооценен на всех музыкально-задротных порталах фанатами группы Black Keys, которые пишут, насколько группа Belle and Sebastian скучная. Лучшая песня - We Rule the School.
good
not at the same level as The Boy with the Arab Strap but still a very good album
At first I wanted to dislike the ultra hipster feel but I can't deny that I was entertained by the varied instrumentation and clever lyrics. A few of the songs completely missed for me, but most of them had me listening intently. I hear the Violent Femmes, Wilco, and many other bands I enjoy lurking inside the muted arrangements. But most importantly, listening to this album brought forth strong emotions and imagery of my daughter coming of age and leaving our house for college. Any piece of music that can stir my soul like that (especially one that I have not heard before and has no nostalgia attached) is worth four stars.
I feel like this is one of the quintessential hipster bands. Many critically acclaimed albums, minor commercial success, and at the core of it, velvet pop sensibilities that few other bands imitate. Although it's not what I love about pop, I can't help but really like this style for how unique it is, and how well crafted it all feels. I could easily see myself coming to love this, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone with interest in indie pop.
לא שמעתי את כולו אבל מרגיש טוב
Os quiero mucho Sebastián e Isabel 💛
A very lovely album! I think If You’re Feeling Sinister is a masterpiece, and this is not as good as that, but it has the same twee, flowery vibes. My fav song is I Don’t Love Anyone!
Very soft nd tender music, always liked these guys but seem to frequently forget they exist
I've always considered Belle & Sebastian to be one of the most inoffensive indie acts that never really became anything - they seemed to earn exactly the levels of tepid enthusiasm and moderate critical acclaim that they deserved. I almost smashed 3*** before I'd even got halfway through the album as it seems the 3***est album ever by the 3***est band of all time. But I held off, listened to Tigermilk three more times this week and enjoyed it a lot.
Serene, melancholic, genre bending. An interesting voice bolstered by unique instrumentals. Pretty solid listen throughout. 8/10
Relaxing sound
fínlegt og skemmtilegt gáfupopp. stundum of krúttlegt fyrir mig en svona er lífið. 4
Pretty lovely
There's something about Belle and Sebastian's style of soft folky/indie that really appeals to me. They sound different to other bands and have tied down the skill of songwriting perfectly. First time I've heard this album and really enjoyed it. 4/5
Great debut especially since it was literally just some college project. Their sound is pretty close to fully formed and while I prefer a few of the albums that came after in terms of songwriting this is still really good
What an imperfect blend of strained, subdued vocals and a sporadic blend of instruments. One which is expertly mixed and places an exquisite emphasis on the feeling of the music, regardless of the melancholic lyrics. This one continued to grow on me throughout the listen. But ultimately I was entranced by the incorporation of all of the magic that indie acts to follow, copied. It has solid riffs and arpeggios, harmonization and quirky songwriting. Hard not to enjoy.
Enjoyed this much more than expected. Lots of fun tracks, good lyrics, soft singing. Never too loud or boring. Very interesting and well made.
Buen disco, música agradable sin grandes innovaciones.
Liked it more than I thought. I thought it was gonna be pretty boring with an emphasis on lyrics and while I’m sure the lyrics are still really thoughtful, there was a lot of cool instrumentation that kept me engaged and made each individual track stand out. Rating: 4.0
The first guitar flourish in 'The State I Am In' is an absolute joy. Fave Track: The State I Am In, I Could Be Dreaming, Mary Jo 3.9/5
I'd never listened to Belle and Sebastian before until I got to review If You're Feeling Sinister a few months ago. I absolutely loved If You're Feeling Sinister, so I have really high hopes that I'm going to enjoy Tigermilk as well. While I really enjoyed this album, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I enjoyed If You're Feeling Sinister. This album was full of really pleasant arrangements, and I especially enjoyed the trumpet and string arrangements throughout the album. The vocals were great, and I liked the lyrical content and themes as well. I liked that the album had a really cohesive sound without any parts of it sounding repetitive. This album was a great example of solid songwriting and really good musicianship, and I'd listen to it again.
Sounds like Velvet Underground and Nock Drake has a baby, in a good way. Chill. Foundation of hipster pop. You can also here a lot of what Sufjan does here.
Solid as hell indie folk rock. Incredible passion, and great musicianship.
really like it
Not a great fan of indie pop, this was nice though.
Pretty good. A little disjointed, but some cool ideas.
Comfort music. Isn't anything wonderful or even revolutionary because we all know that every record from B&S sounds the same, but I feel hugged by a giant plush Snorlax when I listen to.
Tigermilk is the brilliant debut album from Belle and Sebastian. The album was recorded quickly with funds from a Scottish welfare program. The album was an unexpected success, and made the band an international, indie-rock sensation. Belle and Sebastian make richly orchestrated alt-rock songs, with understated vocals. This collection is interesting, melodic, and of enough popular appeal to be the foundation for the band's career.
Great
3.5
saw the album cover for this one and was like wtf am i about to listen to pressed play and shit was majestic solid 4.4/5
Was quite surprised to see this album pop up as I like Belle & Sebastian but wouldn't say this one is their best. However, after relistening I was reminded how good it actually is. B&S are definitely a band who's sound isn't for everyone but I really like them. I'm hoping If You're Feeling Sinister is also on the list though because that album is clearly better than this one. Fav tracks: I Don't Love Anyone, She's Losing It, Expectations
I'd heard of this band but never heard anything by them, that I can recall. The music wasn't bad! I probably would not just choose it to listen to, but I enjoyed the album.
# Playlist Track - Expectations # Notes - It's kind of cool how consistent B&S are with their sound. I didn't know this specific album, nor did I know it was their debut. And it does sound like a less interesting version of the Belle & Sebastian I listened to in my teens. Which does make a lot of sense. Unlike this review. - Their later works is nicer, but still recommend getting to know this one.
Blind album and artist. Cool listen, I enjoyed it, but can we not with this album artwork?
Honestly, just If You’re Feeling Sinister but a bit worse.
I really liked this album. The State I Am In is a really strong start. The momentum keeps up for awhile but dips in the midpoint. I'll definitely relisten but for now very good. 3.8/5 -> 4/5.
So classic so indie 🙏
dehä e nog dat classic
Not bad at all. I quite liked it.
What a wonderful album. Beautiful, upbeat pop songs with warm, full arrangements and lyrics that feel like short stories. There are some surprising production choices, including some synths. “Electronic Renaissance” has a cool sound. And I like the warbly synth in the background of “I Could Be Dreaming.” I was looking for an entry point into Belle & Sebastian’s music and this was it.
I'm always surprised that this band was around in the 90's. You could tell me that every time one of their songs are played and I still think I wouldn't believe it. It's just so "modern indie folk rock"y for it to be from 1996 you know? This has the makings of an album and band that I would love. From the vocal style to the driving acoustic guitar to the brass to the single electronic track, the pacing (upbeat 2nd track hell yes!), the diversity of tempos and feels, it's all great to me. I really haven't listened to them enough but hearing this now is bringing me back to sounds that I absolutely was obsessed with, like The Decemberists, Okkervil River, and Neutral Milk Hotel when I was in college. If someone had played me this record during that time in my life I would have played this album until the burned CD-R wouldn't spin anymore. Excited to listen to this album more. Cool, unpretentious album cover.
A bunch of good songs and a couple okay ones. Reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel with a little more modern and dynamic sound
Big Belle & Sebastian fan and this is one of their best, couple of tracks aren't great but overall this is a fantastic album
I love this. Brilliantly observed songs, fantastic lyrics and musically bounces along.
Loved this. Especially Expectations, She’s Losing It, and My Wandering Days Are Over.
Hey this is actually good. I was scared it was going to be pompous but the rock with folksy vibe is pretty good and relaxing. The electro addition keeps thing fresh too.
Tigermilk I like the song The Boy with the Arab Strap but have never given B&S a proper go, I’ve always thought of them as having too much of a studied winsomeness and tweeness. However I’m wrong to think that - this is great! His voice does take a bit of getting used to but once you get beyond that this really opens up. There’s A LOT of Nick Drake in here, not just vocally but melodically, and some of the arrangements are very Bryter Later. That’s not a bad thing. There is also a bit more bite than I expected, both in the wryness of the lyrics and also some of the music, like the bass and guitar on You’re Just a Baby and the guitar outro on I Could be Dreaming. He has a real gift for melody and hooks as well, some lovely folky 60ish tunes and some very catchy instrumental moments. My Wandering Days are Over is a great example of this, a lovely vocal melody and very pretty trumpet and string arrangements. The State I’m In also, a lovely piano line, synth part and those little guitar moments. And the guitar xylophone and piano on I Don’t Love Anyone. Electronic Renaissance is a bit of a misstep, it’s not wholly convincing although you might argue it kind of works in a wonky homemade way. I also wasn’t as keen on She’s Losing It either, I think that just tipped over into slightly too twee. Overall though I thoroughly enjoyed this, it’s influences (Nick Drake, Donovan in particular) are clear but it’s all so well constructed, and with the sardonic lyrics it elevates its substantially from mere pastiche. Definitely going to listen to more of their stuff. ⭐⭐⭐⭐️
It stayed interesting the whole time, I enjoyed the vibes.
A bit too juvenile for me, in terms of the themes of the album, and sometimes his lisp makes me cringe, but actually it was really nice sounding and well-produced. Could reevaluate later, hard to decide my feelings about it. Also should relisten to their other album
Front loaded with three of the best songs B&S have ever done
I've never heard of Belle & Sebastian and really liked this album! That's the whole point of doing this exercise, so I'm adding this to the win column. The album art makes me uncomfortable, I think I have a fear of getting bitten by fish ^^;
Perfectly enjoyable if not particularly memorable.
I have not heard of this album before but it was very good! I immediately loved the first track: The state I am in. I will definitely listen again!
Favourite song - shes losing it
Chill, acoustic guitar, great for a nice day in the park
The sweetest and most wistful indie pop band that makes you enjoy the simplest pleasures in life. The Nick Drake and Smiths influence with that touch of Scottish softness is a beautiful combination.
I do love Belle and Sebastian, twee-ness and all. The music is so aggressively upbeat and cheerful, delightfully masking the horror of the lyrics. Great combination. I forget when I stopped listening to B&S - I guess I outgrew the 90s - but should start giving them a listen again.
If you're gonna be soft, be consistently, aggressively soft. This album absolutely rocks.
It's pleasant, but does not have a spark.
An album I previously dismissed as a ramshackle prequel to “If you’re feeling sinister”. My revisit was a pleasant surprise. The album is quite a statement, with strong youthful themes and ideas aplenty.
A lovely album, with a few surprises. A very soft sound but then some fun electronic sounds. Really good stuff
Expectations, My Wandering Days are Over, Mary Jo
Great
somehow addictive
I feel like this is a predecessor of bands like Streetlight Manifesto
Oddly enjoyable may listen to more of their stuff
Pretty good throughout, I liked the sound and it was consistent.
Indie
A brilliant debut from Belle & Sebastian! Their sound is unique with smooth. calming melodies, thoughtful lyrics with a cool indie rock music that has been their signature sound throughout their career. It's crazy, because Tigermilk isn't even their best record, but a blueprint and preview of even more wonderful things to come.
Tigermilk was the 3rd album that I heard from Belle & Sebastian, shortly after my introduction to them: "The Boy with the Arab Strap" came out in 1998. This album lacks some of the poignancy of their 2nd album "If you're Feeling Sinister" and some of the jangle pop of "Arab Strap", but overall is a nice album with some great melodies and arrangements. Folk pop for the down-trodden kids.
First listen of this B&S - it felt a bit more “modern” compared with their other 90s records. Their classic sound wasn’t quite there yet. Still an enjoyable listen.
Really enjoyable indie pop
Listened to this while playing Under Falling Skies. I won! I was super familiar with the first track as I had put it on many mix cds back when that was a thing. I was singing the harmony and everything...ha ha. I was not as familiar with the rest of the album, but I still loved it! Not perfect, but pretty darn close in my book. I really love the arrangements and instrumentation...it made me want to listen to more of their albums again.

The State I Am in Expectations She's Losing It I Don't Love Anyone
Nice and mellow album. That’s what I call a good debut.
Great Scottish band!
Rating: 8.5/10 Great album, nice mix of indie rock and folk. Loved the variety of instruments on this album, the horns and strings were very tasteful. Songwriting was consistently great, no song is boring or too long and not a single bad song on the album. Overall very pleasant to listen to, I especially liked the faster paced songs but the slower ones are great as well. Favorite songs: She's Losing It, You're Just A Baby, Electronic Renaissance, I Could Be Dreaming, Don't Love Anyone. Least favorite song: The State I'm In.
Beautiful compositions. Nice, comfortable sounding album.
It’s a mood.
Not mind-blowing, I will listen more carefully just out of respect of B&S later works, but it still is sweet music
I had to check the year this was released because it sounded like a precursor to what would come out 10-15 years later with indie rock bands that dominated the mid '00s to early '10s. Thought it was interesting. 7/10.
Mellow and pretty, these songs put me in a better mood while driving
ein gutes und fluffiges Belle & Sebastian Album
Decent and calm album.
This album is delicate and deliberate with the layering of strings, keys, vocals and even in one case, electronic elements. It's a fun album although the first half is so much stronger than the second. I would still listen to it often enough to want it for my personal collection.
Belle & Sebastian, the epitome of twee, burst out of the gates (or rather, walked politely through the door) with this one. It is soft and sweet, with personal lyrics that I find to be rather touching, but I still find this album's inclusion on this list to be unnecessary and another instance of the list's focus on UK albums. I don't think it's Belle and Sebastian's best, and while charming, there are a lot of artists with albums of similar quality. This is still one I first heard as a teenager, so while not a favorite, I have a soft spot for it, and as such will be granting it 4 stars.
Enjoyable, if a little one paced. First band in this that I had seen live, albeit 5-6 years after this album. Very twee and borderline smug, but not unpleasantly so. You're just a baby and I could be dreaming were my favourites after one listen. Bonus point for being Scottish 4 🌟
First song already hits
The first track for this album really put me off but by the end I realized that I enjoyed more songs than I disliked from this album. I’m pretty sure I’ve had another album on this list from this artist but I can’t remember what it was at all (apparently it was if you’re feeling sinister and I thought it was good). Regardless, Electronic renaissance was my favorite and everything else was good enough that I’ll give this probably the weakest 4 I’ve given
Darlings of the indie scene. I enjoyed this more than I expected.
Belle & Sebastian's debut is one of the first indie rock records. It was a great introducation of the band with a lot of lovely and sweet (but not too sweet) songs. I liked it!
Not a bad Indy album
A beautiful, and somewhat dreamlike, journey. Really enjoyed my time with it and will definitely be coming back for more.
This must just be the week for strong debuts! What a swing for '96. Personally I think this album has a timeless sound to it. Like a lot of the band's material, it hasn't ever really gone out of style. Belle and Sebastian continues to be a favorite for hip college kids discovering "real" music for the first time, and there's something to be said for that. Although I'd argue the band's sound would never progress or evolve much past what we hear on this record, it's still a very strong, cohesive one that has a lot to offer in the way of songwriting.
Brilliant in places
A truly resplendent LP, one that makes doing this project worthwhile. The rich acoustic guitar alongside the finely-balanced vox is at once minimal but full, the production expansive but intimate. Once the synths kick in midway through, each track becomes a little miniature explosion of melody for a few minutes, a tiny burst of color that says its piece and goes. Absolutely wild how modern and progressive this one feels for being released in the 90s - it’s clear how much influence the group has had through the aughts until now for how many ideas here still resonate in today’s indie releases. I’ve neglected Belle&Sebastian up until now, but I’m looking to correct that mistake immediately.
Not unpleasant, but just passed over me - until after the album finished, Spotify played 'The boy with the arab strap' which I really liked. So I played the whole album again and it started to grow on me.
Already a fan of Belle & Sebastian, so I enjoyed this as well. As is generally the case with me, I knew a few songs, but rarely listened to the full albums. Everything on here is pleasant and if not my favorite, at least passable.
Belle & Sebastian take indie rock right up to the line the very line of bubble gum pop but never cross it. I like this album a lot but not as much as some others by them. It's a 4.5 for me.
Really good indie-pop album. Sounds like the late 90s, and could be the soundtrack to a bunch of movies set at that time, but in the best way.
Underrated: I say that if no one rates the album or the band but from the reviews on here I think it deserves more credit than people give. I loved the beat to some of the songs with chord progressions I'm honestly dying to learn on guitar bc they sound so nice. Will definitely listen to this album again multiple times and maybe the rest of the discography as I've never heard of this group. Overall really enjoyed it.
4/10, 40%
Expectations is a fine indie tune. Some acoustic strum with horn accompaniment. Solid production that evokes a vague Grizzly Bear mixed with John Mayer vibe. This seems like music for people who like lyrics. Which is not to say I don't like lyrics, I just don't care to pay attention to them right now. More horns coming in on She's Losing It. This is a boppy little pop number. I think this is my favorite song so far; a lot of depth to the composition between the horns, drums, background guitar, and lyrical guitar work towards the middle. Electronic Renaissance is the first song to actively command my attention here. Interesting introduction that inverts on top of itself before plowing forward into a synth-heavy rhythm. Interesting song -- I'm into it. I Could Be Dreaming is another jam with some psych guitar feedback effects and samples towards the end. Unexpectedly strong mid-section to this album. Album kind of petered out from what I recall; I'll have to listen back through again. All said, this was a pretty solid indie album with good production and composition. There were a few standouts that commanded attention, but otherwise the songs were more lyrical than I had attention for at the time of listening. I fall at a 3 leaning 4 on this one; rounding up because I think I would enjoy listening to it again.
day 27. a great morning listen, lots of very infectious tunes with stories that draw you in, just enough melancholy to give it depth, but not too much to tip the scale into depressing. felt very balanced and I really liked the flow of the album. standouts - Expectations, She's Losing It, The State I'm In, I Could Be Dreaming ... yeah I feel like I could keep going, this is good. misses - I Don't Love Anyone, You're Just A Baby 4/5
Easy. 'She's losing it' is giving drive to a beach, adore the violins. 'You're just a baby' sounds like a begin again song! Electronic Renaissance is quirky and i love it. vocals: a minus point!!!
This is an interesting one to review. It clearly is of its time, yet quite strikingly different to its better known contemporaries. The queer is strong with this, but in a very 90s way. It seems quite astonishing 25 years later that the world was ever as closed off as it was in the 90s - but there we go. I can't say that I like it. I can understand its place and its influence, but I don't think I'll be opting for repeats.
This was great, indie, pop, folk, rock whatever category you want to put it in, it was an enjoyable listen. I particularly liked "The State I'm In" and "She's Losing It". The Pachabel Canon in D that comes through in "We Rule the School" was also interesting. Overall a good album
love them, love this album
This will be another bias review for a Scottish band I like, brilliant indie pop album, I’m more familiar with their second and third albums, but this is still great.
Knows what it is, which is a beautiful little indie pop set if tunes. Perfect for a summer afternoon.
Kinda beautiful
Mainstay on my rotation. Pithy perfect pop music.
Great but I really like the later stuff with more harmony and instrumentation better
I always thought of Belle and Sebastian as just light, fluffy, twee pop. And most of this album is that, but I was surprised to find a little more experimental sound in some of the middle tracks. Overall enjoyable and a little surprising, but I probably won’t be listening to this one often
Enjoyable
Me gusto el instrumental súper tranquilo y con pequeños detalles, las voces se acoplan muy bien con el estilo, me gustó en general, lo escucharía nuevamente
This is one of those "oh, that's who made that song" moments. Overall I love the simplicity and enjoy the cynical lyrics. May not be great in large doses, but the album is great.
4.3 mega chill men også noe man bare kan høre på
I love some Belle & Sebastian. This isn't my favorite, but it's much better than the newer stuff that I can't get into at all. 4/5
Never thought that I’d learn to appreciate Belle & Sebastian, but the guitars sound incredible here, and their songwriting can be quite soothing. Ultimately still not going to be my first choice, but I get it now. B-
I'd drink that
Nice debut album. not too long, great cohesion.
Why 2 Belle And Sebastian albums on the 1001 list? I don't know, but... It was great! The song "Electronic Renaissance" was a huge unexpected surprise and just became my favorite track from them.
One likes this less than If You're Felling Sinister and The Boy with the Arab Strap, but still enjoys it for the craft, the intelligent/literate songwriting and general vibe. The second half of the record is much the stronger. "We Rule the School" is lovely, the best of this lot. "Wandering Days" and "I Don't Love Anyone" and "Mary Jo" are also strong. "The State I'm In" is essential B&S and "Electronic Renaissance" an engaging diversion.
Eðal-albúm!
Kinda reminds me of Spoon or Barenaked Ladies. These are fun, upbeat songs. Electronic Renaissance is different, but I really like it. Overall an album I enjoyed and would listen to again. After reading about it on Wikipedia I don't really understand why it's on this 1001 albums list. Something about the record label's success, maybe?
First full album I’ve ever listened to by Belle and Sebastian. Really enjoyed it. Seemed like nice music to listen to while walking through the park on a nice September afternoon
Indie darlings. Great music to listen to in the morning whilst sipping on coffee. Arrangements are pretty beautiful. Will seek out more Belle & Sebastian.
I should have appreciated B&S more than I did in my punk-pop 90s heyday. Granted, these are simple songs - mostly two or three chords on a loop for 4 minutes at a time. If I heard one person singing this in a coffee shop I'd probably hate it, but the arrangements and the instrumentation are really well done. It can be hard to make a simple song interesting - much less a whole album of simple songs. I don't know if Toad the Wet Sprocket is a far comparison here, but they trigger the same happy spot in my brain.
Enjoyed it quite a bit
Jaunty, lovely, peppy. When the trumpet pops, it's tingles down my back. Very solid, bit slow.
Debut album for these guys. Nice chill indie vibes, they definitely have their own sound, while at the same time showing the Scottish independent scene really well
Svag för debutalbum.
This was super pleasant to listen to. All of a similar style but upbeat musically (maybe not lyrically) so nice to listen to.
4/5. A sweet and beautiful album that feels innocent and young, riddled with trauma and sadness. I will have to see if that feeing lasts to bump it up to a 5 but is definitely a relisten.
Already know and love this record. Brilliant.
Great.. too samey though.. idk. Kind of blends. First 3 tracks are really great. Nothing really special, basic jangly indie-pop-rock with British guy singer + clean smooth folksy-tinged sound. Seems like it influenced a lot of 2010s indie pop/rock. No amazing melodies, nothing outstanding. The Pumpkins and Nick Cave records were significantly better Edit: nvm. Relistening to this. It's growing on me.
I found some of these tracks musically kind of cute, and others a bit disappointing...kind of like under-seasoned food that smells great but tastes kind of bland. It was just like a little something was missing at times for me.
I really like Belle and Sebastian but I find their songs really hard to tell apart and they have SO many! This isn't my favorite B&S album but it's nice.
I love this album and all its tweeness. On a side note, I do think this list would be greatly improved if they didn't include multiple albums by the same artists. This is my second Belle and Sebastian album in a week and even I will say they are an acquired taste
More of a feminist text than an album. It doesn’t quite compare to Sinister, but still a lot to like. Electronic Renaissance and I Don’t Love Anyone we’re the highlights.
a selection of some really cute and some really trippy tracks. i enjoyed this way more than i thought i originally would
The debut record by Belle And Sebastian is a very earnest one. Some songs get autobiographical at points, mainly the beautiful "The State I Am In". It sets the bar very high for the rest of the album, or even their career. But the album features plenty of other great songs, with beautiful arrangements and lovely lyrics. Favorite lyrics: - Soon you will know that you are sane. You're on top of the world again. - When the first cup of coffee tastes like washing up. - If you had such a dream. Would you get up and do the things you believe in? Key tracks: The State I Am In, Expectations, She's Losing It, Electronic Renaissance, We Rule The School, My Wandering Days Are Over, I Don't Love Anyone 8 out of 10
The unmistakable sound of B & S... Love it
2nd February 2023 Listened in the morning and worked from home. 12 week scan in the afternoon, finished US traitors in the evening. Cracking bit of classic indie, sounds like the most intelligent kids in your class got together and recorded and album.
The State I Am In- 7.5 Expectations- 7 She's Losing It- 7.8 You're Just a Baby- 8 Electronic Renaissance- 6.2 I Could Be Dreaming- 7.2 We Rule The School- 6.7 My Wondering Days Are Over- 8.2 I Don't Love Anyone- 8.4 Mary Jo- 8.3
Nice indie pop with a warm feel; not conventional enough to feel boring yet the more experimental passages felt like they could use some expanding upon. All in all a nice collection of songs to sing along to.
Decent
Every bit as intriguing and introspective, lilting and lovely as one expects from B&S but, honestly, a notch below their best (Sinister and Arab Strap). The merits feel as literary or novelistic as they do musical, though light touches of excellent craftsmanship abound. Nobody does wistful young despair or hopelessness as well as Murdoch – see "State I'm In" and "Don't Love Anyone" and "Wandering Days" as exhibits A-C. One admires their hiding out from the media for so long and retaining their mystery, which was additive to the brand.
Here's me again, disagreeing with how Apple Music labelled the genre on this. It remains to be seen why that bugs me so much. I'm surprised this came out in 1996 as it sounds like early 2000s indie singer-songwriter. I'm shocked, SHOCKED that nothing from this album is on the Garden State soundtrack. If you liked this album, you'll love that soundtrack. Anyway, I really liked this. Singer-songwriter is hit or miss for me, and this album was a bit of both. I preferred the peppier songs; not so much the slower ones. I'll be saving a few songs to my 1001 Highlights playlist.
I love B&S. Spotify reckons they’re my 3rd most listened to band since I joined in 2009. Despite that, Tigermilk is for some reason one of their albums I haven’t ‘milked’ as much. On a whole I think this a good record with the delicacy and intricacy you expect from B&S. It’s not their best though. It sounds to me like a young band finding their way, before perfecting it on follow up albums (If You’re Feeling Sinister in particular being a gem of a follow on). I can’t bear to vote them anything less than a 4, as they are such a special band, but this album isn’t quite as special as others. And it’s the album up for review, not the band. But I love them. Perhaps if I spent as long working as I have agonising over an arbitrary star rating system, I perhaps wouldn’t have to work late tonight.
