Favorite Tracks: Train in Vain (Stand by Me) London Calling Spanish Bombs
I started listening to the 1001 list for albums like this one. I've seen this album everywhere, but never went out of my way to actually listen to it. With the songs being so different and changing throughout the album, it's easy to see why it's on the list. I'm sure so many bands can list this as a major influence for them. I never got bored listing. Every song felt like it had a different set of instruments and singing style. Hell, I never expected to hear a reggae song on here right before one of the biggest pop songs of all time. I'm sure that a lot of my favorite bands and songs wouldn't be what they are without The Clash.
My husband loves this album, but it's just okay for me. Definitely a solid album, but it's just not my favorite music.
sigma ah hell
I'm not a big punk guy, but this is basically everything I'd want from a punk album. It was consistent but not repetitive. Some good and catchy sections that snuck in different genres. Have to dock it for being overly British though
This is a belter. It's long, but has strength in depth. So many great songs!
Banger na banger deze week superalbum dit
Surprisingly, that might be my favourite punk/post punk album on this list, even though it doesn't change the fact that I still really don't like those genres. Title song is very good, atmosphere created by the bass and drums is amazing, vocal and lyrics put it straight to the top of the best songs list. The rest of the album is okay, but not as spectacular as London Calling. Solid album.
A great listen, I also liked the Ska songs that were sprinkled throughout the album.
Liked this album a lot. Fun to listen to all the way through.
Once I got used to the vocals I enjoyed it. Also most of the songs did not really match the vibes I got from the album cover or my general perception of punk as a genre. A lot more upbeat and less edgy. Maybe the punk I’m thinking of is from the 90s.
This was pretty long and I have a short attention span so the fact that I wasn't bored I think is a very good sign. I love love love the fact that I liked the second half of the album better bc I feel like that rarely happens, I dont really see myself going back any of the songs a ton but overall p good; 8/10
Mostly just another rock n roll album, but somehow I liked this one better than the others. Maybe the prominent bass guitar? Maybe the fact that they mostly sing and don’t do too much of that annoying shout singing? (Although they still do some of it…) Pretty enjoyable overall even though it was so long. 7.5/10
7/10 - I started as not the biggest fan of this album but it grew on me as it went on. On some of the songs his voice is annoying but the guitar and other songs it is fantastic.
Pretty good, some really good songs. Sometimes his voice kinda annoys me on some songs
fun, nisam fan dugackih albuma tho
Curti
4/5. I know, why not a 5/5?? This like the best album of all time according to everyone! And yes, this is an amazing collection of songs, each one unique and great in their own ways. However, there are definitely some forgettable songs later on in the album and just like "Heroes and Villains" and "Vegetables" from the Beach Boys, some are so god awful annoying. Spanish bombs, Rudie can't fail, wrong em boyo? How am I supposed to honestly listen to those and lie to myself that those are enjoyable. Punk has evolved to a point where I need actual energy to be able to feel the passion. But like I said, it's a good album just not great. I think if I went into it knowing it is a pop album and not a punk album, I might have enjoyed it more, just left a bad taste over the genre. It's like being told the Beatles is rock, which is just a lie. And I know genre is subjective but seriously, get out more if you still think this punk.
One of my absolute favourite albums as a teenager. Joe Strummer's voice is iconic, Guns of Brixton a legendary tune.
Pretty decent
4/5 only because I feel like this album is overhyped to the extent that most people automatically rate it a 5/5. "Lover's Rock" got on my nerves, but the rest of the album is solid. I prefer Combat Rock if I had to pick between that and London Calling.
Have absolutely no recollection of some of the tracks
Is this an Ursynów calling reference
Some great songs. Definitely want to re listen to
La rabbia e il ritmo dei ghetti della Jamaica arriva a Londra.
Enjoyed the songs. I was surprised by the variety in the music.
was pleasantly surprised by the richness and complexity of many songs, especially the inclusion of horn sections. the title track is the most iconic, and while the production of the rest of the songs is great, none are quite as memorable
Proper punk, this is. If you were anywhere near London in the late '70s, you couldn't miss hearing an album as important as this one.
Obviously made more iconic by living in London
The Clash is another band I never got around to listening to. I dig it.
The first song of the album is classic. The rest are typical British punk of the time. Overall 75%
Never listened to the whole album, just the more known tracks, so this was a good listen.
Undeniably Hall of Fame album but not really my style.
I live by the RIVERRRRRRRR!!
Hard to believe once upon a time this was punk. It’s very good in retrospect. Vocals are awful, but the music and songs are fun and listenable. Excellent!
(5,45/6) THE Punk Rock Band. (London Calling 1. and 2,3,4,10)
Well acquainted
I don’t think I’ve ever listened to this album all the way through before. I thought it was super fun. I was glad to have some music I understood after that Faust album lol
Loved it
Great easy listen. Awesome rock music to listen to in a pub. Great apres vibes!
I actually enjoyed this one…like a lot…had me boppin’ around the house the whole listen. More punk music should have horns in it!!!! Like can you imagine how fun it would have been to see this live back in the day?
Fun album. Parts of it felt like early ska/punk. Super high energy and the horns were great. Wasn’t too familiar with much of their work minus their hits so this was a good intro into the rest of their stuff
Great album. I’m lazy so that’s my review today.
Good stuff. Classic feel. Just pleasant to listen to.
Solid album with fun songs.
Good moods
Punk meets Bob Marley ish
Classic!
A little too long for a legit 5⭐️s but still it’s still an incredible album.
A very, very strong 4. I really like how they're not limiting themselves to just one sound, but keep on experimenting and messing with different genres, styles etc. My one real problem us that I feel like the guitar was too low in the mix sometimes, but I can live with that. Fave song's probably Spanish Bombs. Also unlike a certain other famed English punk band, The Clash are actually talented and not just a group of total hacks.
Very hit or miss for me. Bit of a 'throw shit at the wall and see what sticks' album. I appreciate their experimenting though, it definitely made for a nice journey listening to this album, so I'm happy with its exclusion on this list. Really enjoyed some of the songs like 'London Calling', 'Clampdown', and there are also a couple of decent ones like 'Spanish Bombs' or 'Death or Glory', etc. , but unfortunately multiple forgettable ones as well. Hard choice here, but fuck it, I'm giving this a 4 with some goodwill considering it's from the 70s and still banged with insane diversity of styles/genres.
Can’t beat em
Quite fun. I love this kind of older punk. Went on a little long, though.
I thought I knew what London Calling would sound like. From the minimal knowledge I had of The Clash from Should I Stay or Should I Go, to the amazing spoof on Elvis with the cover, I was convinced this would a punk album for the ages. But I couldn’t be happier that it isn’t really a punk album. Punk is great and all, and there is plenty of punk music I enjoy. And while this may seem like a simple minded opinion, just straight punk rock has always felt a little one note to me. But when a “punk” album like this comes around, it’s much more exciting. They avoided making a one note album in the best way possible. The mixes of genres is excellent, and considering this came out at the tail end of the 70’s, this feels ahead of its time in many ways. Especially in areas like new wave and post-punk, where this excels at creating uniquely amazing blends of sound. All three vocalists have that slightly generic 80’s singing voice that always takes me a little bit to get used to, but I always end up loving it by the end. And for a double album, this surprisingly lacks almost any bloat, and doesn’t drag its feet in any particular area. It’s energetic, heartfelt, slightly weird and experimental, and just enough bonkers to keep me entertained. And there are just certain parts of songs I love, like the couple of sections where a saxophone or trumpet comes in from The Irish Horns. I will admit that the album falls off in consistency a little bit from Koka Kola to Four Horsemen, but it picks back up right at the end. Overall, this album tries a variety of different things. And they kind of hit it out of the park in every way. It’s so much more than a punk rock album, and definitely inspired the sound of many bands to come. Rating: 8/10
Train in Vain...best song ever that doesn't have the title in the lyrics! I never knew it was actually a hidden song at the end of the album and a late addition. One of my favs of all time. If you thought the Clash was a one trick pony...listen to this album. The version I listened to online was a vinyl rip. Made it sound even better! Timeless classic! Great songwriting, vocals, spot on playing.
Might be the one thing we can get people to agree upon.
This is too long but doesn’t really feel it thanks to the variety of genres A classic title track and the rest is pretty great
Good.
Fürpünk.
💖 hateful 🗣️ 8️⃣
This is punk music made by people who hate the system but love music. This is unlike most other punk where it’s thrashing, yelling, and poorly played songs. The clash are so good at what they do and made plenty of amazing songs on this album along with one of the most iconic album covers ever. An exceptional album that shows how good punk music could be. 8.3/10
Nice punk album :)
Perfect Friday album.
Good...
Good album. Upbeat sound, clever, interesting lyrics, good punk attitude Rate Good
Great! Very dancy music. I didn't know any songs by the clash other than Should I Stay or Should I go.
Ugh I had a write up on this and it didn’t load. I liked this but it was very long. I like a lot of the songs. Clampdown and Koka Kola were probably my favorite. The lyrics are all so punk I love it.
Heard of this album was too great. I only know one song "brand new Cadillac" not a bad one, and I always wanted to listen to the whole album let's see: First song, I love the energetic start. Their voice is fine too. His voice is British in some parts, which kind of make it more unique. It got kinda repetitive, but this is going well for now, the bass and the drums and guitar all did their job. Second song, almost same vibe, and I like it. Quite short I must say. The instrumental break is scratchy, not enjoyable, but also it's expected from punk so I'm okay with it. A little basic I guess. Third song, it's slow, but the beat is very fun to listen to. Thing is I've heard many songs and albums that sound like this, and it's not in any way different for now. Weird noises are going on in my right ears, it was jazz then some muffled noise, same happened in the left one(not exact sounds). 4th song, very different start, I love the beat when they sing, it's singing with them as if. This is so karaoke, I love it. Such energy, it's definitely giving. Their voices are strong in their way(I think two of them sing so). The chorus is very catchy. It's much better than the last song. 5th song, already different instrument in my left ear. He sings the verse in a very fun way. The way he sings some words is too unique. That energetic sound in the left ear, which is basically instrumental way of their singing is lovely. 6th, a little melancholic start. Nevermind. They sing in a funny way idk why, but I do like it. They know Spanish?! Nicee. I bet the lyrics are very meaningful, but I'm again lazy to check them. The beat is also uplifting, and the I feel the beats in my ears literally, like they bass them. Loved this too much. 7th song, he talks instead of singing at first. The beat is good. Shake ass song definitely. His voice scratched for a moment. Jazzyness came in. The weird groan was something. Liked this one too. 8th song, melancholic start, Interpol vibes. I like his voice here more. Chorus is too good. such vibes I can't. The chorus is very catchy, I sang along to it too. One of the best songs for me. 9th song, instantly hard rock start. So many lyrics. I love the pause-beat thing going. There was different vibe for a while, which devoured and the pause-beat is back. End was not as good, but overall it was perfect. 10th song, nice start, the instrument was laughing whaat. Chorus is simple, but very good. This is not as interesting as the other songs. 11th song, fully different start, it's both melancholic and upbeat. WHAT beat changed to something totally different, it's a better one I must say. There is background singing too. That saxophone (I think) makes this energetic and I live for that. One of the best songs here. 12th song, chorus was very not boring, they screamed for it too. Beat changed, it's instrumental break and he makes monkey laughing noises (I think). Not dramatically different, though it was satisfying. 13th song, quite short. I like the he says koka kola. Not very good to me, basic even. 14th song, beatles like start. Now it's ABBA vibed. Not anymore. His moan singing is very unique though. The instrumental beat is the best part here, there was saxophone thingy for a little time. He sings alike to that instrumental beat, which makes it much better. Long outro with the best instrumental on the album I think. 15th song, uplifting start. There is two voices I like that. There is a pause after he sings a little. This is vibey definitely, chorus is really good again. Guitar break is basic. Continuing as good as possible. There is beat change at two minutes, I like it. Weird new instrument came in and gone. Pencil writing sound. What is happening with the noises going onn. It's basically a big outro, which eventually I didn't like. 16th song, it was upbeat, then the beat dropped for a short time, quite fine. The rhymes are good in the whole album. Outro is him shouting something. This was fun if I liked punk, it's just not my favourite genre. Objectively it was interesting. 17th song, I think there was a transition from the last song. Of monsters and men "ha" was included. The beat progressing very fascinating, especially with the lyrics going. Weird beat now, the bass was weird too. I get why this was the best album in its release year. A better outro I must say. 18th song, temptations like start, tropical. A long one the song is. The verses are exceptionally good. I don't like his voice in some parts. Saxophone is in the room with us. He sounded like he had teeth on his tongue. Beat slowed down(volume too). "organ plays"? Does he mean that literally?. Idk why was it this long, but it was good enough. Outro best changed very well, and ended too soon. 19th song, fully different vibe as always. It's a last song too. He says the words fast in a good way. This one is annoyingly monotonous. Best part is when he says "you didn't stand by me" so satisfying. He doesn't vocal much, but he did in this one, nothing special. Well, finished it. I knew it would have this vibe, but the songs weren't same, different instruments, the beat and his voice were quite excellent. However this is not my genre per se so 4 stars is enough. I liked almost every song, but there were some flops so the rate is even more accurate.
Better than the Sex Pistols. 4.5
Really enjoyed this. A good mix of genres made listening fun.
The cover alone is worth ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. Title song pairs nicely with Talking Heads' LIFE DURING WARTIME both musically and lyrically. Also simply kicks ass. LONDON CALLING (song & album) marks the point when The Clash took over the world (from Queen?). Released as a double album, sadly not every song is at the level of LONDON CALLING. Because of that, while it warrants 5 stars in terms of "must hear before death" and its importance in the history of Rock 'n' Roll, it gets ⭐⭐⭐⭐ from me. __________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 22 🎧 LPs left to review: 979 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 5 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list: 7 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine: 7
Before this I was only familiar with the title track and Train In Vain. This was so much better than I expected. Perfect example of what I was hoping for in this project. Did go on a touch too long, but fun throughout.
Some great classics but album can get a bit repetitive
classic of that era.
im lost in the supermarket. i can no longer shop happily. 4.5
classic! never knew train in vain (stand by me) was by them!
Classic and a masterpiece, one of my all time favourites.
Wow! I really dislike punk, so had stayed away from this my whole life (I tried so many other classic punk albums and didn't like any...) But this one is so good! So raw, but catchy. The two vocalists really compliment each other well. 3.5/5
Album absolutly iconic
"London calling to the faraway towns" - a legendary intro for a legendary album. A mix of punk rock and new wave, "London Calling" had widespread critical acclaim, broke records, and is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Despite the album's strong reviews, the single "London Calling" has had the most longevity from this album.
So many short tracks
A ray of light in the Disco dominated era
A nice early punk album. I enjoyed it and was not expecting a brass section. 8/10
being so fr I love that ska vibe - lost in the supermarket - wrong em boyo it took me a second to get onboard but i like this i want to love it i want to know every word sing it cover to cover 5/7
You can't fault The Clash for not trying things. It's like they took every ideas they had and gave them a fair try. And for the most part it works! I wouldn't even consider it a punk rock album per se. Maybe more something like new wave with strong reggae influences.
I was very familiar with this album already, so it was a strange one to have on day 1. But truthfully, it's been a long time since I'd listened to it, it was nice to listen to it again. A classic.
Great album and definitely iconic. I’ll rate this 4 stars because I enjoy the album, and would definitely put on from time to time, but not a favorite. Good album construction with amazing opening and closing tracks. Their sound gets a little stale about ⅔ of the way in.
Door het 1e nummer toch 4 sterren
Not sure why he sings like he has a potato in his mouth
Solid album, of course. Better for me in smaller chunks, for sure a great album.
A punk band doing an album where they decide to do multiple generes. Thats so punk. The standouts are brilliant but the album can drag on at times
Classic! A bit too Crazy for my taste but great tunes, no doubt.
London Calling, often hailed as the first post-punk double album, showcases a diverse range of musical styles compared to The Clash's earlier records. However, it lacks the energy and drive that defined their debut. While it's undoubtedly an accomplishment, it's not the pinnacle where The Clash truly shines. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 5 STAND OUT TRACK - Train in Vain
Is always good to keep in touch with the punk-rock roots, it has very high highs with it's experimentation, but also lowest lows with repetitive songs.
An all time classic, even if it isn't all to my taste.
For some reason, I thought these guys were a punk rock band. If they truly are, this album put all their other talents on display. A nice mix of different styles that are definitely good for repeat plays. Solid 4
An amazing album! Top songs 9/10
I'm not entirely sure why it's considered one of the best rock albums of all time, but I liked it!
Very good. Not at all punk, just good catchy guitar pop, rock, ska and soul. I think there's around 6 excellent songs, 5 or 6 good songs and the others are superior fillers.
Stilistischer Wanderzirkus mit Punk-Attitüde. Verständlicherweise relevant.
Seminal album that's grown on me. Only had heard London Calling before these two listens. Whole album is great. Punk elements, 70's rock, politics, ska/reggae vibes, it really has it all. 4/5!
The album cover drew me in at first sight. The music didn't fail to live up to the 'mistake' of a picture. Or so the photographer thought....
First half felt very strong and I enjoyed a lot
Death or glory
Great production.
Very fun
love the band and london calling
Fun, creative album. Quite diverse and interesting
Nice album!
The titlesong is an absolute banger. The rest of the album is a bit worse, but still very nice to listen to.
More diverse than i'd expected
The peak of punk rock, innit? The Clash's willingness to experiment, or even compromise to other genres, helped create a masterpiece punk rock album. Still punk at it's core, it happily dabbled in new wave, ska, reggae, jangle pop, and a few other sounds. The result is a multicultural punk representation of the UK in 1979. A double album, no less! IT rarely falter in quality and has plenty of standout tracks: Spanish Bombs, Hateful, London Calling, and Train in Vain comes to mind. Are there better punk double albums? I would argue yes, but this one set the bar.
2 good songs
Classic
Such a great flavor of pure English punk. Each song has a log of important messaging the reigns far ahead of its time. from London Calling to Lost in the Supermarket- i shoulda kept my eyes peeled for the dystopia we live in today. Catchy, fun and such a upbeat vibe
Enjoyed it more than I expected to.
Classic album, classic cover, brilliant Friday album
Moved the needle. Innovative while still being good. Basic, yet complex. A definite 4.
I appear to know all of this despite never playing nor liking it very much in the past. The Clash always seemed a bit phony/earnest to me, kinda like an actual punk U2, so I didn't find it very exciting when I first heard them as an irritating adolescent. Gotta admit there's a lot of good songs on here, even if I do strongly prefer Mick Jones's voice. A well-earned 3.5, with a bonus round-up from inspiring my middle kid to describe the habitual reggae guitar chirp as being "like a cat coughing up a hairball".
Enjoyable, but not as punk as people seem to think
Sometimes the lead singer sounds like he has cotton swabs in his mouth. Doesn't make them worse, just how it sounds. Highlights: Jimmy Jazz Rudie Can't Fail The Right Profile Wrong 'Em Boyo Revolution Rock Train in Vain (Stand By Me) A very good album overall. I really enjoyed the varying styles and sounds between different songs. I'm always a sucker for a brass section so those songs were highlights for me. If this album cut 4 or 5 songs it would be a 5 but a few of the songs were forgettable. I would seek this album out again to listen to.
An enjoyable listen I liked London Calling, Ride Can't Fail and Lost in the Supermarket the best.
Classic album. More songs than I thought - 4 sides? Some of these songs could be from the mid-late 90s. Did I just hear a backing orchestra on a punk album? I forgot Train in Vain is on this album. Hit me like a truck on the last song.
London Calling isn't a punk album, nor is it the greatest album ever: the tracks are too bright to be punk and the songs are too disjointed to merge together into one well-integrated cohesive whole. My view of the album remains clouded by these two misconceptions. I find it difficult to judge London Calling by its own merits, freed from the clutches of fawning critics ("The Only Band That Matters", my arse). There are decent tunes on here. Flourishes of ska, rockabilly, reggae and dub add flavour to good but otherwise fairly standard rock tracks. The further from the standard template The Clash venture, the better the tracks are. But then again, the brilliant Revolution Rock is a cover, so what does that mean? Should The Clash have just done reggae covers? I don't know. Is London Calling as good as Unknown Pleasures, which came out in the same year? Or The Specials? Or Entertainment!? No. Definitely no.
Muzikale verrassing, wederom punk zoals ik dat fijn vind. Met verrassende muzikale nummers, waar de gitaar de boventoon blijft voeren.
I was surprised how much reggae tones and themes are on this album. Loved it!
Classic, influential, deserving of this list.
So many punk classics. The only thing dated about this was the vocal processing. Otherwise, v good.
Classic.
Muy guapo
A banger ...
Very good stuff ive heard the more popular songs by the clash before but getting into one of their albums i had no idea that they also did reggae and ska type songs along with some other punk bangers on this album. A pleasant surprise
I enjoyed it, was expecting it to be a straight old-school punk record, but the sounds were very diverse. It combined so many musical genres, such as punk, reggae, rockabilly and some funk elements as well. Fun record to listen to.
super
They’re so fun :)
Очень драйвово. London Calling, Spanish bombs и I'm not down хороши.
This album was way tamer than I expected, given that I had only listened to the title track before. I definitely wasn't expecting such a wide array of sounds and influences. Some of the songs I didn't really care for, it was a bit too long, and I wish there was a bit more intensity, but I enjoyed this.
Jeg nåede ikke at du lyttet til hele albummet, men det er lytte til synes jeg var virkelig godt især sangen lost in the supermarked er virkelig god synes jeg og jeg skal helt sikkert finde tilbage til det her og lytte færdig.
Very groovy punk rock! I'd listen again.
Pretty catchy punk rock. I could see how they would be iconic for their time with standout vocals and instrumentals.
I like the famous ones, the rest are ok.
- nice punk rock stuff - only knew some other song of this band (Should I Stay or Should I Go - thanks Stranger Things) - first track "London Calling" is a banger - rest of the album is mostly relaxed, though there are some songs standing out in between - love the influences of reggae (in The Guns of Brixton e.g.) a lot - after Wrong 'Em Boyo the rest ripples along a bit until the last track (Train in Vain (Stand by Me), that's super catchy again - maybe even a 4,5 / 5
Turning up the production value just enough to capture the punk to radio transition. Great album to have on if there’s a party.
A bit of a mess of an album, like a lot of class albums it could be cut down a lot. first two sides and train in vain is enough honestly. that being said still pretty solid all around. I need more dark reggae post punk like the title track and guns of brixton
Sticky tunes, nice for background listening, great Latin vibes on some titles
Reminds of Exile on Main St by the Rolling Stones. Solid throughout, but not much in the way of stand outs
Instinctively, I assume that classic albums aren't going to be as good as people say, but this was really superb. I knew about half of it a little and I knew the title track and Train in Vain really well. But it flew by, it's absolutely jet-powered and the vocals are sublime. I also think that they offer a real lesson in being 'hard' without losing a sense of melody and of fun. You can see why the Manics were so influenced by them, especially in the vocal delivery.
1 Certified banger, rest is pretty good as well. 8/10
The variety of the songs was so nice and they were all great
Nice
Great Fav tracks: London calling Lost in the supermarket Train in vain
Some stronger songs some weaker songs but overall a very enjoyable listen. I really enjoyed London calling, Spanish bombs, death or glory, and train in vain.
Aight. Somewhat overrated
Terrific, listened all weekend. Brand New Cadillac is the best. Classic.
I never really listened to the clash growing up, so it was mostly new to me and Abe really enjoyed hearing the start of punk, ska, whatever else they influenced. In particular very good album.
Good album. Lot of cool, different songs. Ska influence.
Classic album that deserves its status
So many different flavors - rock blues ska reggae
Classic punk
Fun more ska and other influences than I expected
London Calling and Jimmy Jazz top favorites. Want to listen to again, Listen to Sandanista as well!
This one stood on its own. 60% of it was good, 40% was great. The clash is an interesting mix of music that I find to be modern sounding still. My favorite thing was seeing a little reggae influence. Excited to listen to more of them. London calling, Koka Kola, I’m not down - quick top 3
Een leuk album wat vooral heel sterk begint. Tegen het einde wordt het namelijk wat langdradig en niet elk nummer was per se nodig geweest. Maar ik heb er genoeg plezier aan beleefd voor een 4.
Enjoy the sound, can't always understand the lyrics
Kinda sca which I enjoyed. I added a few songs to my playlist. The main singer is very British and hard to understand at times. I would have had no idea this was considered punk had I not looked it up.
This is a pretty great record. Lots to love and there are some sleepers to go along with the hits. The title track is obviously a classic, and Train In Vain (Stand By Me) is to my ears the best track on the record. The rest of the record is interesting and surprisingly consistent for being such a long one. It gets a bit too 80's ska-y to me sometimes, but this is a killer record and worth anyone's time.
It's pretty much the definition of British rock.
4/5 Solid Rock Album
Crazy fun production and songwriting, sometimes its old mix can make it sound more samey than it actually is
Not my first listen of this album and won’t be my last. Love the sound and love what it paved the way for. Fav songs: Rudie Can’t Fail, Train in Vain (Stand By Me) and of course, London Calling
This album was the first Christmas present that my wife ever bought me. I was very Clash curious at the time, mainly based on their funkier Casbah stuff but this was very welcome. I can’t remember the last time I actually listened to it. I certainly didn’t remember it was 19 tracks. I think the best thing you could say is that it could have been released at any time in the past 4 decades and it wouldn't sound out of place. There are some absolute bangers, some production that is a bit weird, some tracks that are genre defining, some that are weird rockabilly pastiche. Worthy of its place as legendary, and nice to catch up with it after probably the best part of 20 years.
Couple of my favorite songs here, I'll give the whole thing a listen
Just a classic.
Lots of classics right here
Classic but repetition of ideas and motifs throughout
The previous album had me questioning this whole list. I'll give it a little longer. This album slaps.
Listened only halfway through, but loved the first half
:D
7/10
Great to hear this again, it's been years. Opened to albums of the era and I loved these to.
BL: Had a big tie to The Clash since a young age. My dad always loved The Clash and I started listening to their hits when I was 9 or 10. Listened to their first two albums the whole way through but never this one. So will be good to hear it. AL: This album was very good, it had a massive range which I did not expect, especially the ska tracks. The album is full of twists and turns and still manages to flow incredibly well. I don't have much to say beyond that, but it was a good listen. FT: "Hateful", "Lost in the Supermarket", "The Guns of Brixton", "Koka, Kola" 4/5
Definitely a fun album. The Clash definitely redefined what rock should be and can sound like, with a mix of genres. The mumbling almost casual nature of the music is really interesting, and there are some really great tracks here. Not sure it's a favorite for me personally, but I think it's one I'll continue to come back to.
3.5
One of the most iconic albums of the late 70s
A perfect punk record, due to the fact that it uses its multi-dimensional genre-bending to advance the classic “punk themes”
Somewhere between punk and new wave The Clash put together a really good album.
Still one of the best punk albums out there.
I recognised more on here than I was expecting, and lots of songs that have been sampled in more recent years
favorite song : lost in the supermarket i love this album, it makes me think of last fall, the beginning of our last year of high school. i would wake up early just to listen to lost in the supermarket on my record player before going to school. life wasn’t hard and everything felt like it would last forever, i genuinely loved going to school and meeting my friends there, i loved the lack of pressure i felt even though it was the beginning of a brand new school year. i could say i miss it but that chapter is officially closed and i feel ready for a new story to begin.
A classic. Sounds like ska
Classic album with a legendary cover. It's well-rounded, but there are only four songs on it that are in my regular rotation. There are 19 tracks on the album, which isn't a great ratio, so I can't quite justify giving it a 5.
London Calling - Not a fan, for some reason couldnt get into this track. Brand New Cadillac - Very catchy, upbeat and is generally a fun song. Makes me want to cruise down the street with a beer and a cigarette then crash a party and get into a barfight. Jimmy Jazz - Originally thought I wasnt going to like this song, but the beat + guitar licks are endearing. The brass towards the end is a nice touch, and is a foot tapper. As I’m getting further into this album, can’t get over this fucking accent though. It sucks. Hateful - Catchy and generally an inoffensive song. Almost seems like a song that would have been released early 2000s or late 90s. Ahead of its time definitely. Rudie Cant fail- fucking hilarious how this sounds like Ska. Is this the originator for ska? Not bad, it won me over halfway through even though I ended up not liking it at first Spanish Bombs - Pretty decent, dont have anything bad or good to say about it though The Right Profile - Forgetable, probably my least fav on the album. Lost in the Supermarket - Love this song, catchy and the lyrics are poignant and amazing. Very relatable and I found myself replaying this song a couple of times. Favorite song so far along with brand new cadillac. Clampdown - Kinda generic lyrics, but at least the instrumentals are good The Guns of Brixton - Great instrumentals, love the use of unique sounds in this track. Decent lyrics but i was blown away by the sound of this track. Wrong em boyo - was not a fan of this track death or glory - pretty good anthem type song, was enjoying it. koka kola - funny ass lyrics but forgettable the card cheat - really enjoyed this one, is definitely a fun one. lovers rock - this song sucks LMAO. nah for real tho its alright, just kind of corny. like they were throwing darts at a board and it went to “love song”. At the end theres a funny as fuck moan though
This album shocked me. Very much a classic, I didn’t write a great review for this and it’s not as in-depth as I’d like. Nor did I look at the lyrics of many of the songs. It’s a very simple and clean punk album, from what I know this sound inspired the punk that we get still to this day and has left it’s cultural mark. In todays stands of listening a 7/10 for me.
Well I am surprised! Funny how time affects the senses! Nowhere near as loud, brash and heavy as I’d imagined - very lyrical & musical - great production! Why don’t I know more of these tunes? Maybe I was a little late to the punk party 🤣 - but can hear so much rockabilly, psychobilly and reggae - even a bit of Springsteen - really enjoyed listening…..took me down memory lane a little 😊
A few classics I already knew - generally quite samey but not in a bad way. Still a defining sound of British punk
Divertido, variado
Started fantastically, but got progressively worse after song 10. Really should have left it there.
London Calling? Best song so far. Thought it was called live by the river though lol Woah these songs are short First one with more than one above average song. Yeah its pretty good. Would be like 4 1/2 stars.
W album
Every time someone would call The Clash punk I would cringe - they don't feel like a punk band, at least not the ones that I had always known. They were a little too soft and the sound was frankly anything but punk. However, after listening to this album multiple times to be rid of my preconceived notions, I finally understand the punk monicker. It's the lyrics that are punk - a pointed attack on the state of the world and the policies that have created the mess. The musical stylings to go along with the lyrics actually tie it all together as well, given the late 70s timeframe where so many different genres were reaching the mainstream. Not to mention, it's a "we the people" commentary, and the genres highlight the differences of the people while unifying with the lyrics. While I now appreciate the album and would rate it highly, I still can't say it's one of my favorites to listen to. Maybe in time this will become a forever favorite for me, but as of today it's not there.
Standout tracks: London's Calling, Lost in the Supermarket, Clampdown, The Guns of Brixton. Less of a fan of the more 'traditional' rock and roll-vibe songs personally, but a great record all round. Great 70s production and love the drum sound.
tbh I would not call this a punk album, and certainly not the greatest punk album of all time. so much more ska than i realised. regardless, very good of course.
I'm familiar with this album. Never loved it, but it's pretty good. I'm a big fan of some of the middle cuts that I don't think were ever singles(?), like The Right Profile, and Lost in the Supermarket. Wish it were a little shorter overall, but I enjoyed this listen. 3.5/5
I’ll admit, I was surprised that I’m ranking this so low, but a lot of the album is kind of middling. The best tracks are among the best punk ever made. It’s highly recommended regardless, but double albums are a tricky endeavor. B+
Ganz cooli Songs. Nix überwältigends, aber guet. Klassiker. 4 Stern.
When they kick at your front door How you gonna come? With your hands on your head Or on the trigger of your gun When the law break in How you gonna go? Shot down on the pavement Or waiting in death row You can crush us, you can bruise us But you'll have to answer to Oh, the guns of Brixton Solid album, great sound. Fundamental to what came after. 4/5
Hearing the roots of the punk rock scene was really interesting. Awesome album with a lot of solid songs.
This is Radio Clash ..... all hits, all the time! So many bangers on this album it’s hard to count. And such a diverse mix of musical styles, dub/reggae, rockabilly, and Post punk, and remarkably it all flows together so well. Everyone knows the big hits, but I have to call out Spanish bombs, Lost in the supermarket, Clampdown and Guns of Brixton as some of my all-time Clash favourites. This double album has 19 songs and it runs over an hour so it’s a little bit on the long side and there are a few fillers. If they had skipped the fillers and just made it a single album with all bangers, this would be an automatic five stars for sure.
Just a classic punk album through and through. I’ve heard it many times but never get tired of listening to it. This isn’t my favorite of the early punk albums, but it really stands out with non-traditional punk songs such as death or glory, revolution rock & train in vain.
Alot of bangers on here. Also a few more duds than I was expecting. But what's good it really good. Train in vain is the best of the bunch, will never get old for me. Great album that could do with trimming some fat. Get rid of ~5 songs, cut this thing down to 50 minutes and I'd be handing out a 5 star rating. Best: Train in vain, lost in the supermarket, I'm not down, spanish bombs, London calling
Buenos temas
4.5 clash er nice
A lot of experimentation only possible with a band this skilled
Enjoyed it, particularly like tracks like clampdown and lost in the supermarket. Think I only really knew the hits before.
Hadn't listened to this for years, so many great songs. Not quite a 5* for me because I find the vocals on some songs (e.g. Jimmy Jazz) so irritating, but enjoyed revisiting. Train in Vain and Spanish Bombs are my highlights.
I’m surprised by their range. I expected the album to be shorter and all of it to sound like the title track. Instead there were plenty of slower and reggae songs which was cool. Pretty good.
I liked it
There are incredible highs on this record: the first 12 tracks are a sensational blend of rock, jazz, reggae, ska and other genres; but excluding the brilliant closer Train in Vain, the last third of the record fails to repeat the successes of the previous songs.
I'm not sure if I actually don't like the title track or if it's just a frustrating "why is THIS the song you like" reaction to its popularity. As fun as the bass is and as rock-solid of a progression, its repetitive, kinda martial quality (sorta like Another Brick in the Wall) just feels less colorful and good than plenty of the other songs on the album. But man lots of bangers on here.
genre bending carefree brit punk rock ska. reminds me of movie montages of youths playing hooky 3.75/5
4* Solid album, great vibes, definitely giving it more listens
Good punk album, ushered a new Era of punk rock which I can appreciate.
A defining moment for the Clash, and punk/garage rock. A true classic
Great album, was pretty fun. Prolly wont listen to it regularly tho.
I don't get it. Their first album was better. I want to like it more, but it's just too dang long.
Great album. One of the big albums of that era. I have it, obviously.
I enjoyed this overall, despite it being not massively my scene. Having only heard 'London Calling' before, and knowing they were a punk band, I was really impressed by the variation on display here. There's genuinely lots of different styles and the songs all stand apart from one another. The second half is better in my opinion. I think I would enjoy it more with more listens too, so that's why I'm going to go.... 4 stars!
The Clash. One of the founding groups of British Punk. Great album.
Better listen the second time through
I liked this, a lot more than I thought I would!!
partaj!
Grandpappy of the 950 UK post punk new wave albums on this list, but good actually
London called while you were out. Please contact us to arrange a new delivery.
8/10 undeniably a great album but calling this punk is very debatable it’s just too traditional in its composition not to mention like two of these songs (Wrong Em Boyo and Revolution Rock) are practically ska like yeah, it is a fun album, but I can’t really call these guys punk
Standouts: London Calling, Train in Vain, Clampdown, Lost in the Supermarket, Others: Rudie Can't Fail, Revolution Rock, Brand New Cadillac, Jimmy Jazz, Hateful, Spanish Bombs 4/5
Good! I enjoyed it a lot.
Blassic
Have been mixed on this album before but this time it ended up connecting with me. The great songs are great and the others are good or short enough that they aren’t obtrusive. “Train in Vain” is mega groovy
Hot take: bra skiva
Definitely the Clash's best. Also the lightest on the reggae, which I find tedious.
4.7 Not much to say about that one.
Classic brit punk
This was not what I was expecting from The Clash. Very post-punk, with some definite ska sounds in there. Excellent stuff!
Kind of overstays it’s welcome but it has an excellent closer. Overall great album
Loved it! Great punk album and they are truly one of a kind. Album got even better the second time I listened to it. Favourite songs: - London calling - Jimmy Jazz - The right profile - Train in vain
Weird that this album feels way longer than it used to for me. That said, there are some standouts - London Calling, Rudie Can't Fail, Lost in the Supermarket, The Guns of Brixton, Train in Vain - but even the songs that don't totally bowl me over all have something to 'em. I can listen to this album straight through still and I've done that a number of times. I've never jumped into The Clash with both feet but I like this whole thing quite a lot.
This would probably be a 4 and 1/2 star event if we could do that. The only thing that's keeping it from 5 stars for me is just the length. It comes ever so close, but can't quite (imo) help from losing a little bit of steam here and there and I think that's primarily due to the sheer fact that it's a double album and, well, basically all double albums have this problem. But man. What a good collection of songs and sounds, by and large. The title track is such a good tune that it seems impossible to top. I'm not sure anything else on the album quite does, and yet they kind of don't even try. Instead, the band just shifts genres/moods entirely and writes an aces song in that lane. "Lost in the Supermarket?" Forget about it. Feels entirely different from the title track, or "Guns of Brixton," or "Rudie," or fill-in-the-blank and yet somehow they all still sound organically like they came from the same band. I think that's the hardest thing to do with a double album; there's usually one or two outliers that just feel like one of the band members wanted to fart around a bit and it somehow made the cut - because nothing didn't make the cut. Not here. It's not all perfect, but it's all impressive. And it's pretty much the only thing remotely approaching ska that I will ever admit to liking.
Excellent album. Very much reminds me of being little as my folks played this a lot.
I thought this was going to be a lot more raw sounding than it was. I thought punk was meant to sound not put together and a little gritty? But this whole album flowed together nicely and had a little bit of a bunch of rock subgenres that kept me interested the whole time
This is good, overall 4/5 Upbeat and chill
What a great punk album. Could be one of the best punk vocals. I still think Iggy is the best. This is still top tier. Solid 4 for this album. 1. London Calling 2. Train in Vain (Stand by Me) 3. Lost in the Supermarket 4. The Guns of Brixton
Not what I was expecting, don't think I've listened to this one before. A lot of creativity and variety, and wide ranging influences.
A classic album ! More classics and less “rapping” please 4*
Not really punk, as it is touted, but a great album all the same.
The Clash were the most creative of the OG punk bands. They were probably also the most influential one on a wide range of artists. There's a lot of variety on this record. The good songs are awesome, but not all songs are good. Favorite song: London Calling.
4/5 Maybe I am going soft, but I actually really liked this album. I love the subtle social commentary in the lyrics and the music was rockin. Maybe I like Punk?
I don't know what I expected from this. London Calling and Train in Vain are very composed songs, but much of this feels off the cuff, and purposefully a little sloppy, especially the vocals. There's a lot of pop-punk roots in these songs.
crapa
great album.
This is a band I feel like would have been a hell of a good time in concert. They could sing about anything and make it sound good.
A great album through and through! I love The Clash for their vocals, rhythms, riffs, and garage-y sound.
Great stuff - a much more interesting listen (to my ears, at least) than a straight ahead punk album. I do like some genre hopping. Fave track - "London Calling" is iconic, obvs. "Lost in the Supermarket" basically invented Pulp, right?! "Clampdown" is also a tune...
this is such a wonderful album, the clash is wonderful, everything is wonderful
8/10 tough to rate!!! The highs are really high but it’s brought down by having a whole load of 6/10 songs
7/10. I can hear why people say this is great, but it doesn't always land for me, and it's long, though that wouldn't be an issue if I was more into it. Still solid stuff
Pretty good! First half of the album slaps hard. Falls off a bit at end. A few tracks could have been cut, but London Calling is an album I like!
Punky
I gave London Calling a higher rating due to the historic importance it had on the corse of popular music.
Never really gave The Clash a fair listen. I liked this record. Especially the ska/reggae tracks. Truly a landmark record in punk history.
Jolly good
Yes! Rock with interest! The Dialect alone makes this more interesting than ZZ Top or Black Sabbath. On Second thought it turns out I just like the punk aesthetic more than rock. Still fails to hold my interest through the whole album, though there are significantly more standouts. London Calling is a great track and Lost in the Supermarket made me perk up and pay attention.
Really nice, some very cool songs on there that I’d never heard.
unpopular opinion: they're great, they're aware and companions, they made part of music's history but I feel bored every time.
A great album, the best by the Clash. While they may have become synonymous with punk, this shows they were so much more than 3 chord thrash merchants. Such a strong opening with London Calling, backed up by a great cover of Brand New Cadillac. Honourable mentions too for Guns of Brixton (the Clash did reggae better than most other non-reggae groups), Clampdown and Train in Vain. The second half of London Calling is a little weaker, but overall a superb album
Good music, not mine
So unhinged, yet simultaneously smart and sharp. I love the story of their rehearsals, how they disciplined themselves to rehearse in the afternoon, play soccer, go to the pub, and then rehearse again. Sounds like a kind of utopia I would like to live in for a while.
Probably the start of the mainstream popularity of The Clash. London Calling is a genre/country-defining song for sure, it still is awesome. There are a bunch of other gems but a few songs that really don't need to be on the album for me, it is quite long in terms of track length, but it's still punk so they are all pretty short. Overall good stuff albeit not a streamlined album experience.
Suprisingly mellow and good sounding post punk album. Tad bit long but overall an enjoyable album
On the weekend one of the founding members of the Clash passes away, Kieth Levene, we get London Calling! Kieth was also a founding member of Public Image Limited, who I strongly urge you to take a listen. This is another band introduced to me by Jason in college. This album has some iconic songs, including my personal favorite Train in Vain, but has many different styles of music, I have a hard time calling them a punk band. I hear some reggae even some brass/horn sounds mixed in there, which reminded of an old English band called The Specials. Another band I encourage to take a listen. Hell, Train in Vain is really a love song, isn't it? Or broken heart song, but you get the drift. Too many good songs to talk about them all, but I know another good band called INXS, where lead sing Michael Hutchence stated his favorite song was Spanish Bombs. Listen to a couple times over weekend. Shout to Clampdown, Train in Vain, Spanish Bombs, Card Cheat, London Calling..... hell, I throw a shoutout the entire album and the many diverse songs and sounds. Great album. Absolutely love the album cover too. 4 for me. Probably closer to 4.5
4.5 Here is another album that separates the boys from the men. This album is easy to credit a big part of my punk/new wave love as it was influential to both genres. This is The Clash at their most well tuned. It’s not as experimental as Sandinista and it’s not as shitty as Cut the Crap. It edges on just a bit too long for me but that’s by maybe one song. I absolutely do own this on vinyl. Love it.
First time hearing this whole album and I was a bit surprised. A lot more to The Clash’s sound than their best-known singles. It seems like they evolved a lot over their career. Not sure I’d come back to this often, but their influence on many bands is clear.
Liked it
Genre-bending and it works.
This album has everything: punk, funk, and a bit of ska
Loved it front to back. The Clash are iconic. Joe Strummer is a legend.
Now that I'm older I realized these guys were really just pop. dirty grungy pop.
Mostly brilliant, but some tracks left me a bit indifferent
I've heard this too many times. It's good but doesn't hit the same way it used to. Really consistent quality of songs though, considering the album length. Big up the Clash :)
Classic.
It's a classic. Great album, one of the very few double albums that manage to be entertaining all the way through. I'm not the biggest fan of the reggae-ska-whatever songs, like "Jimmy Jazz" and "Wrong 'Em Boyo", but then you have songs like "London Calling" and "Train in Vain" which are some of the best and most influential songs in punk history. Essential listen, not exactly a 5/5, but really damn close.
Oh yeah PUNK me up! That said, this album maybe didn’t need to be as long as it is
mag das album, mag die band
Too long
Hated this album at first because I heard it was punk and then I found it too lyrical and well-instrumented for my liking. Changed my expectations and now I really enjoy it. So theatrical and varied, a challenge to the preexisting notions of punk rock itself which is pretty punk. 4 stars
Fun reggae punk, unexpected to my ears. Milo likes this album a lot. I like it enough to try listening to it again.
- the songs are all quite layered and dense with horns, percussion, keys, acoustic guitars - be interesting to see how they translated to a live setting - each song has a tongue in cheek element of other genres (shuffle, reggae, blues, etc) - joe strummer goes hard on pretty much every song fav song - I’m not down - Good energy, simple but effective lyrics, cool guitar stuff least fav - rudie cant fail - ska vibes - an experiment that i dont think paid off
