Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I'm not especially a fan of concept albums. This one made for a pleasant enough listen but not so pleasant that it made much of an impression on me or would inspire me to want to seek it out again.
Not Genesis at their best but definitely making some interesting musical decisions
Very pleased to seecthis here, it's an album with a massive reputation though I'd never heard it. Genesis started out as a Prog band and this definitely bears that out. Now the what do I think of it? Hmm. Well, it was OK. The stand out track being 'The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging'. For me it would need a further listen or two. But for now on 1 listen it's got to be worth a score of 3.
Album 534 of 1001 Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (1974) Rating : 3.5 / 5 There was a time I would have probably enjoyed this more. Still, a fine album. May be better with a closer, uninterrupted listen.
This album is wild. It's just like a wild progressive rock opera. It's so so long. I can't imagine anyone being super stoked on this and thinking that putting the whole thing on to listen to on a regular basis was a great idea. What a world.
i really enjoyed quite a few songs on this, but a 3 feels appropriate as i don’t see myself returning to this album in full anytime soon
I don’t understand Genesis. And I’m ok with that.
This concept album is clearly the Genesis that people had in mind when calling them an influence on Fish era Marillion - I was only familiar with their earlier albums and with late Phil Collins era. Enjoyed the music but the concept was kind of naff.
I'm what the hardcore Genesis fans would call a poser (probably). I know Genesis' eighties music very well, and I know a smattering of their seventies sound. I definitely prefer their pop, mass-produced music over their long, overzealous jam sessions. They never strayed away from their progressive roots though, but I suspect they learned to tighten up the songs that last more than eight minutes. Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was a hallmark of progressive and art rock for the weird and other worldly sounds. These long songs definitely aren't for everyone but are soaring, satisfying epics. While this album was an exercise in patience, I only heard amazing music.
This project has taught me that I am not the most patient when it comes to true progressive rock. A lot of it draws on too much for my liking and ends up sounding like glorified jam sessions. I know some of the more mainstream hits by Genesis, and enjoy those quite a bit. I also enjoy Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins individually as artists. Therefore, I expected to enjoy this a bit more. But in the end, my impatience for prog rock won out. I ultimately found this album to be okay, but pretty difficult to get into. I guess just leave me with the mainstream Genesis stuff that the "not so hardcore" fans listen to.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the sixth studio album by Genesis, originally released in 1974. I was always familiar with Genesis' later work, which I didn't dig much. This list has opened my eyes to how good their earlier 70s work was. This one was on the weirder side. It was their last record with Peter Gabriel who insisted on having pretty much full creative control for the record. He wrote the whole thing and came up with the concept. While the band worked on new material at Headley Grange for three months, they decided to produce a concept album with a story devised by Gabriel about Rael, a Puerto Rican youth from New York City who is suddenly taken on a journey of self-discovery and encounters bizarre incidents and characters along the way. This double album clocks in at over an hour and 20 minutes long. It feels bloated at times. You can also tell that prog rock was started to get a bit wankery at this time as well. Some of the solos and time signature changes are a bit much and just barely veer into masturbatory territory. However, one thing I loved was the use of electronics. There are a few instrumental tracks that evoke a really psychedelic feeling/atmosphere, not unlike Pink Floyd. I'll give this another listen in the near future but for now it's a solid 3.
liked the storytelling vibe overall, but felt that it is a tad too long. Also the flute and synthesizer use sounds great in this. favorite track: fly on a windshield other picks: lamb lies down, carpet crawlers, counting out time, anyway
5.5/10
Might be doing this in the wrong frame of mind but this was a bit of an ordeal. About an album too long!
This was cool, I’d probably give it a 3.5.
3.2 I distinctly remember one time I was in a cab and the driver was going on and on about how great the band Genesis was. He gave deep descriptions of each album, their concepts, and their themes. I swore on that day I would check Genesis out. That was 18 years ago, and today is finally the day I sat down and listened to a full album. That cab driver is exactly the kind of person who would love this.
Kinda mid album, some bangers bring it up to 3/5
Of it’s time so nostalgic. High 3*
This is just a weird album.
I prefer Exodus! Hahahaha bible joke...
Some great sone not so much but I always loved the band
It was great musically very inventive, but I would never listen to this whole thing again.
what's up with all the peter gabriel this week?
Genesis was never my thing. There’s skill, and a melody. But it’s boring. Shrug, move on.
This was a really challenging listen, since it's such a long album. It was helpful to listen in parts (the sides from Wikipedia). There's a lot of material I liked and a lot that felt uninteresting but necessary to the concept. Overall, pretty ambitious, very bloated, mostly good!
It is OK, not the music I know from them but I enjoyed it. Nothing is going on repeat but it is good.
Bastante rollo ... Mejor la segunda parte.
Will need to listen to this one again. Wasn't super impressed, but there's an unease and sense of danger there that I would like to explore again.
Very pretty prog album. In the vein of the best of them (King Crimson, Yes and Pink Floyd). This is a behemoth of a record though. Hard to digest it all but definitely impressive/well produced bare minimum (the first 4/5 tracks, the waiting room, all really impressive). Counting Out Time has a really annoying....something synth line in the middle. This album is overall good but it drags a little. The instrumentation tends to be beautiful at times but other times grating. The lyrics can be a little overly ridiculous. Curse errogenous zones? It is definitely an ambitious epic bar none.
Good
Está bien pero no me vuelve loco.
enjoyed a lot more than i thought i would, long as hell but probably wouldn't be that bad if i wasnt sober
I have now and then listened to some of the 70s Genesis albums. The music is very good and sometimes quite complex, which are normally things I like in music. But still I never really became a fan. For me something is missing.
I will say that out of most of the classic rock albums I've heard here, this one definitely held my interest the most, and that's even including the long hour and a half runtime. There were a lot of really interesting musical ideas here and despite that not all of it was great, I'll probably return to some of the tracks on here
Liked this way more than I expected. Not at all like the songs that I've heard by this band before.
It's got some good moments but found it too long and overblown by the end
There’s something about the production that makes this really hard to listen to. I dig some of what’s going on musically but have trouble paying attention. I’d like to give it another listen to get more of the story but dunno of I can bring myself to go through the whole 90 minutes again. Once was hard enough.
good album overall 6/10
This album was pretty cool. A bit weird at times, but you get the feeling that’s what they were going for. “The Waiting Room” was a bit disturbing, but again, I think that was the point. I kept thinking, “That sounds just like Phil Collins,” and sure enough, he was involved in Genesis before his solo career. So now I know.
Oh hey, another 70s album. I'm shocked - SHOCKED, I tell you. I feel like this entire project is sponsored by the 1970s. Out of 145 albums so far, 40 of them have been from the 70s. Since my overall ranking is around 2.6 for the decade, you can imagine my excitement in seeing this album pop up. That said, I'm pretty sure I've heard of Genesis. I *think* Phil Collins was the drummer or something? It's not like I'm a huge Collins fan, (but I also don't have Arseblog-levels of hate for him), so I'm not sure how much that's gonna swing this album to the positive, but here goes nothing. Verdict: It's fine. Whatever. 2.5 stars.
I should give it a chance listening all the way through and stoned off my ass, but I couldn’t do either of those things and listened to chunks throughout the day. Didn’t enjoy it in that context.
Crazy how different these old Genesis albums sound compared to their 80's stuff with Phil Collins singing. This album was decent; some cool musical ideas at times, other times it kind of lost me. I might try it again sometime.
Good album brought down by excessive length. I like a lot of the songs individually, but it's too damn long. 2.75/5
Iconic, still i don't dig this at all
Took me a few goes. So much going on that it became like white noise at some point. I also struggle with prog concept albums, at some point the lyrical flow just dies as they try and fit the story in.
I think if I liked this band I would've thought this was one of their best albums because there was lots of different stuff on it. But I was mostly just a bit bored
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the sixth album by the English progressive rock band Genesis, and the last with Peter Gabriel as the lead. This double album is their longest to date and it received mixed reviews at release, although it was still commercially successful. The production was phenomenal and it can be argued as the best Genesis album. It has been certified gold in Canada, France, the UK, and the US. I enjoyed the progressive rock on this album. The music tells a story as well as being something you can feel and dance to. Pretty much a superb album all around. Give this a listen if classic rock music is your thing!
The piano at the start of the album gives me slightly cringey over dramatic vibes. But then I kinda just love Peter Gabriel's voice - the way he sings "on broadway" is tasty. This prog feels particularly nerdy. I think the proggier aspects don't really add that much, and the best music here is just the pop songs hiding underneath, like the choruses of Counting out Time and The Carpet Crawlers. Perhaps this is why I generally just prefer Peter Gabriel's solo stuff to Genesis overall. Maybe it was also just a deluxe version or something, but the album is bloated for sure. Fave Tracks: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Broadway Melody of 1974, Counting out Time, Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist, The Light Dies Down on Broadway, It 3.1/5
Kuuntelin molemmat levyt kokonaan, nehän vetivät mukanaan! Saavutus puolitoistatuntiselle levylle.
Hard to judge a concept, story album like this on one listen. I like the Genesis sound in general and both Collins and Gabriel have great voices. Still, pretty meh.
Helt OK
Hmmm... way too long... but had a few good tracks.
Te lang, en te wazig
Hadn't heard this one. Genesis has never been a band I've cared for - but I only really know their lame radio friendly 80s stuff - Invisible Touch etc. This was better than I was expecting - a bit AmDram but the music is always changing , I didn't bother with the lyrics.
Ok
I grew up listening to the 80s version of Genesis so it's always weird to hear this version. Prog rock really isn't for me for the most part, but this was very good if you like that sort of thing. Just not for me. 3.5 stars
This one is overly long and self-induglent. It simply has no business being a double album; there is too much filler, and the really good material would fit on a regular LP easily. It's a well known prog rock epic (Carpet Crawlers is among the higher quality tracks), but it's often lacking in the hook and melody department. As such, it isn't bad, but a little tedious to get through. 3/5
There's a lot of interesting music in here, but holy cow is this album bloated. This is my first taste of Genesis in album form, and I'm definitely intrigued, but this project isn't anything special as far as I could tell. Very little about this sticks out. I wasn't a fan of some of the vocals in the middle of the album - hard to tell where. I can't tell what the goal is thematically here. 6/10. Favorite Songs: Hairless Heart, The Carpet Crawlers, Anyway Least Favorite Songs: The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging, The Colony of Slippermen,
Struggled with this. Feels like it needs more than a day to get fully into it. Good sound but unsettling melody/rhythm that warrants more effort than a single run through…
This was ok, but felt they were trying too hard to be Trippy and Psychadelic. Like they listened to I Am the Walrus and went oh lets write some nonsense lyrics and we'll have all kinds of hits! Instrumentals were mostly good, aside from the weak psychadelic wobbly sounds they'd throw in.
Good progressive album, though I did not particularly click with it. Has some bangers, certainly.
Creative and epic. A bit too epic at times.
There were a couple of ok songs
I feel like I should like prog rock more than I do. I don't dislike it, and there are some prog rock albums that I really like. Most of them leave me feeling a little flat, and here we are again. I like Peter Gabriel's solo stuff more than his stuff with Genesis, and frankly I feel the same way about Phil Collins. There's a lot of cool stuff going on here, it just doesn't feel like it comes together in a way that interests me 3/5
I like Genesis, and this album is interesting. The instrumentation is first rate, but I think they may have tried too hard to be creative and different. Maybe drugs played a part. That said, I still enjoyed many of the songs, particularly on the second half of this double album.
I have to admit I stopped at colony of slippermen, I’d heard enough. I liked how unpredictable the album was but 90mins is a joke.
Way too theatric and dark.
lol
Some awesome stuff, some cheesy stuff. Not a fan of the vocal style. Loved some of the cool guitar effects.
Interesting compositions but I didn’t have enough time to listen to the whole album properly.
I can respect it but I dont really like it compared to the others
Needs more time
The album has a great flow from song to song. The overall sound is definitely early 70's synthesizer.
I must admit, this is a disappointment, and a huge step down from their previous album, Selling England by the Pound. Its heavy use of synths lead to an album that hardly feels like it means any of the music its producing, and while there are certainly cool and good uses of the synths, it isn't anything that artists like Brian Eno weren't already nailing. I will say that the album does get close a lot to grabbing my attention, with many tracks catching my attention at first, and I must give it credit for that. It just fails to prove itself minutes into each song, and even the best tracks have nothing on its sibling that I once again can't help but compare it to. Cool concept, middling execution.
This is good and has cool variety, but I’ve just never been much of a Peter Gabriel guy.
Pretty long winded, even for a Genesis fan. This era always reminds me of Gabriel as an elvish priest in Middle earth. The prog brings it back for me but his voice and overall lyrics push the vibe. 3/5
Genesis' massive epic, but before they went more pop, which is what I prefer.
I like it, I don't love it. It's very long. A bit like Chole's review, my Dad loves this album. And I get it. It fells like a lot of effort to get to some really cool bits.
Long
Ikkje dumt, men for langt
I didn't really have patience for 90 minutes of prog, so I half listened whilst I made mince pies. It was ok, the pies weren't much better. Less noodling than I was expecting. I grew up loving Fish-era Marillion who shaped themselves on Gabriel-era Genesis, but I'm not really feeling this one. I blame The Who’s Tommy for all this impenetrable weirdness. Even The Small Faces went in for it on Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake!
Early Genesis.... This was good but seems to be trying to hard to be 'significent'. Better said, a bit artsy fartsy.
Through my parents I grew up listening to Phil Collins Genesis, which made me dislike their pop rock style. However, I find their earlier prog rock albums more interesting, and I am a big fan of Peter Gabriel’s solo work. His latest album i/o was finally released yesterday, id highly recommend it to anyone who likes his music, hopefully makes futures cuts of the 1001 list. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is one of Peter Gabriel’s last albums with Genesis, and it is a very ambitious and creative project, in my opinion his best with the group. It is a double album that tells the story of Rael, a young man who goes on a surreal adventure in New York City, facing various challenges and temptations. The album explores themes such as identity, sexuality, religion, and society, using a variety of musical genres and styles. However, I have some issues with the album that prevent it from being a favoruite. First of all, I think the album is too long and repetitive, and it could have been edited down to a single album or a shorter double album. Some of the songs are filler and do not add much to the story or the music. For example, songs like The Waiting Room, The Light Dies Down on Broadway, and The Colony of Slippermen are boring and unnecessary, and they drag the album down. Secondly, I think the album is too typical and clichéd of the prog rock genre. The album relies heavily on the keyboards, which sound dated and cheesy, and create a bland and monotonous atmosphere. The album also uses a lot of common tropes and devices of the genre, such as complex and obscure lyrics, long and indulgent instrumental sections, and obscure and pretentious references. I feel this sort of album just gives fans of Star Trek a big hard on. Therefore, I would give the album a solid 3 stars out of 5, and I would say that it is an album that you should listen to before you die, but will only really enjoy if you are interested in the history and evolution of Genesis and Peter Gabriel, or if you are a fan of prog rock and concept albums. However, I prefer Peter Gabriel’s solo work.
An okay album, few good songs and a lot of average/concept songs which are just instrumental fillers.
Very long album.
Definitely good. But it just made me want to listen to other classic rock bands of the era. I’ve never been a Genesis guy, but I’m glad I gave it a listen.
Bastante rollo ... Mejor la segunda parte.
I don remember this but i think i hated it
A good prog rock album. "Selling England By the Pound" from the year prior is better and shorter. Probably only need 1 Genesis mid 70s prog-rock album and this ain't it.
Even though this was waaaaay too long, I was still pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I know about Genesis through cultural osmosis but never really listened to much of their music despite hearing a lot of peter gabriel growing up. I knew it was prog rock but I wasn't expecting it to be as bombastic and eclectic as it was. Every track felt like a showstopper with entire orchestras (or whatever other random instruments) going all out at almost every moment which unfortunately still got a little stale at points throughout a 90 minute run time. It reminded me a lot of moving pictures by Rush but was much better than that album IMO. The gold standards of long albums remain the nitty gritty dirt band and aphex twin so far and am still dreading 69 love songs
6 tracks in and I was concerned I wouldn't make it through the record but it gets better... the first Genesis album I've listened to in the streaming era.
Counting out time is utterly ridiculous. Wippeeee
I struggled with how to feel about this album. I enjoy Peter Gabriel, I enjoy Phil Collins, I even enjoy Genesis. But I didn’t enjoy THIS Genesis. I DID enjoy the fact that this album felt like a coherent body of work, I think it was created with the notion that the listener bears it from start to finish, not single tracks. The songs felt large, like they contained entire movements in some of them. You could hear the impact Gabriel had on the band even though he was not a member any more. Some of Collins’s iconic drumming was very present here. On the other hand, the lyrics were far too abstract for me to enjoy. Too many of them felt like the result of a “bad lip reading” segment. I probably won’t spend a lot more time with this album though I continue to enjoy the journey of listening.
A pretty fun and interesting album that is dragged down by being as a long as a damn movie. I'll call it a 3.5.
The cover art, as we say in New England, is wicked smaht. In one of the songs, it sounds like Peter Gabriel is saying "get me out of the keeee itcch in"
not actual music but a statement
First of all, no album needs to be this long. Having said that it's quite ambitious and not terrible. It was just far too much.
Didn’t listen, it’s genesis however probably pretty banging. 6.5/10
Far too long, some weird bits.
Not sure I've ever heard any non Phil Collins Genesis. Very Prog but not unenjoyable
This might be the first Genesis album I’ve heard that I like. Interesting concept, I like the composition, Gabriel’s singing is fantastic
Overall overblown and overstuffed concept album, but an interesting listen (I didn't really follow the story that well, but read the summary on Wikipedia...it's a lot). The music is pretty tight and varied, but there is just so much of it on this double album.
Idk man de e fö långt o goofy för något högt betyg men musiken är i regel trevlig att höra på
I do like some Genesis, but this album is a bit of a marathon to get through.
This one went from interesting to weird.
I expected to hate this, but I ended up *quite* liking it. It's intricate and detailed and an ambitious idea, if nothing else. Of course it disappears up its own behind at various points, but overall it's an enjoyable listen the first time through. I would imagine more of it unlocks and it improves with repeat listens, but that's not something I'll be doing the work to confirm. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Hairless Heart Date listened: 04/09/23
This album grew on me as I kept listening. Some definitely catchy songs, but also a couple of duds. Glad I finally listened to a whole album though!
I like Gabriel so I wanted to like this more than I did no real stand out tracks for me.
There were some good songs but it is really long. Highlights were Counting on Time and Carpet Crawlers
So much better than the last genesis album
The good parts are really good, but it is sooooooo long. Way too long. They could have made a 5 star single album instead. Favorite song: Back in NYC
Prefer my prog-rock to have more wizards, capes and tales from Viking mythology tbh.
Ambitious. Long. Pretty interesting. 7/10
Not the biggest fan of Genesis. 2nd part of the album much more enjoyable for me.
I must admit, I haven't finished the album. Not that it would make much of a difference if I wrote this afterwards, though. I just can't focus or pick up on the plot at all. Ninety-four minutes of Genesis is too much fucking Genesis, no matter how good it is. I capitulate. Just make a film, lads. A film-length 3/5.
If we weren’t hearing this a couple of days after Dark Side of the Moon, it might warrant another star. Still, a strong outing from G.’s prog rock years.
I don’t know. I didn’t like it and an hour and a half is a lot of this. I guess it’s musically good in the way a broadway show is good. Begrudging 3 stars?
I think this wax too weird for me, future me reading this comment, check out the wiki story for this album, it's wild
Another middle of the road album by a great band. Whatever. 3 for proggy shenanigans.
I don’t like this. It lacks the catchiness I want out of Genesis. That thing that makes Phil Collins tolerable. It’s musically speaking a phenomenal piece the whole band seems in stride and Collins’ drumming is in pocket throughout.
Bastante rollo ... Mejor la segunda parte.
Way too long, but to their credit it seems that they never run out of things to say in 90 minutes. Some really compelling tracks here and there that would be more impactful, in my opinion, in the context of a more condensed 40 minute album.
Yeah, has the hallmark of overindulgence that turns me off from prog-rock. Genesis' vocals always seemed cheesy and well, sorta bad. I can't say I enjoyed any of it really, not enough to listen to again. That said, respect to the ideas.
The story is either inscrutable or overly simplistic, like most other prog concept records of that era, but unlike your Floyds or Who, there's no higher ascension or twee mysticism here -- just a character toughing it out on the streets of New York. At times that rings a little hollow coming from a bunch of pastoral schoolboys like Genesis; at others, the music is breathtaking.
Very dramatic and intricate songwriting with the lyricism to boot. Does sound and feel very similar to exploring New York. It's a bit long winded, but a feat of musicality undoubtedly
Muy entretenido
This is my least favorite Peter Gabriel-Genesis lp This is one of those double albums that should’ve been single Still don’t get the ‘concept album’ story either
So musically, this is epic. I love the sounds, the orchestrations, everything. Lyrically, however, and the "story"? What the heck is happening here?
Rock progresivo. Disco larguísimo. Ni fu ni fa.
This album was Genesis’s last with Peter Gabriel, and he certainly took over with the writing and production. It’s a sprawling proggy concept album that features some truly beautiful moments and lyrics. However, it collapses under its own weight at parts and unfortunately becomes a slog. Nevertheless, the music is outstanding and often sounds like fusion with certain chord changes and melodic lines.
Well that was weird.
3.5/5
I like all the ingredients, I like some of the results, but too much of this album is, honestly, ponderous. Love the beautiful Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats but Ravine is nothing but tedious; this dynamic plays out through the whole thing. I can't rate it 1 star and 5 stars at the same time, so.
I enjoyed this, but I'm not listening to all of it
I think this might be my first time listening to Peter Gabriel's Genesis, and if this album's any indication, I think I prefer the Phil Collins version of the group. This was all a bit overdone for my taste; even the album's title feels like it's trying too hard. There were some poetic lyrics and such, but it was all just a bit much. Rounding up from 2.5 out of respect for Gabriel and Collins.
Enjoyable for my taste but not standout to me
Un disco aue sorprende en la primera escucha. Mucha data qje me irrita. Imobjetivamente el didco es una genialidad porque lo melodico es excelente el problema es el ya mencionado. Para mi 5/10 para mi e.
Double albums don't really work, and this true here
Not the biggest fan of Genesis, but decent album
There's an enjoyable ebb and flow of emotions throughout. A lot of the lyrics feel a bit forced in to complete the story though. Some really cool sounds and effects created.
Musically it has a great vibe all the way through, and with a lot of catchy parts. All in all it is getting too long, as with a lot of progressive 70s stuff. So, kind of ok, but there are better Genesis albums, both with Peter Gabriel and without him
It was okay.
Soooo long
I was much more interesting than I initially thought when I received the album. It's not the best psychedelic, and it's not the best psychedelic rock, but it was not a pain.
a strange and theatrical prog/glam record with a few noticeably good tunes. 3.5/5
Visai buvo idomiu vietu. Bet kitos annoying
So apparently this was a concept album, but I was too busy vibing with the music to discern any semblance of a story. I like progressive rock a lot, so I don't have a problem with overblown lyrics, but I was getting pretty tired of everything after the first disc. If they ended the album then and there, this could have been a 5/5, but they just kept going. You could probably get married and have three children during this album's runtime. Basically the same issue that I have with Pink Floyd's "The Wall". Prog rock works best when it's on an album with like five 10-minute songs. You can't do these gigantic lyrics and crazy instrumentation that well when your average song length is 2 minutes. So in summary, my thoughts on this album are that The Wall is easily the worst 70s Pink Floyd album, including Atom Heart Mother.
I didn't dislike it, but I didn't love it either. So very proggy! 😅
The right side of psychedelic acid. Some great songs 2nd listen required. Lovely weird
I love the concept, but in actuality this is long, repetitive and very weird
I like Peter Gaberiel, Phil Collins, Prog, yet never got into early Genesis. This was an enjoyable listen, though it felt bloated at moments. More of a 3.5 for me.
I was waiting for a time to come back to this album because I felt like it really needed my undivided attention to give it a fair evaluation. After listening to the prog rock masters Pink Floyd, this seemed like the right time to come back to this. I've always politely enjoyed the title track but never knew its context or link to a whole concept album. It's got some good proggy instrumentation, though a lot more keyboard and synth then the rest, I think. Some good guitar work that is at times great. Some songs that caught my attention were the sequence from Broadway Melody of 1974 (all the real people callouts? heavy guitar riffs?) to Cuckoo Cocoon to In the Cage (the latter two meshed nicely together and had some great energy and deft instrumentation). And then I pricked up my ears on every listen for Counting Out Time - erogenous zones, what can I say? Some nice rocking guitar and interesting lyrics - reminded me this was all about a young man finding himself in NYC. Peter Gabriel really has a perfect voice for prog rock and he was great on disc one. Another song that really caught my attention was Lilywhite Lilith - great energetic start to side three. But then the transition into The Waiting Room was painful and the rest of side three is mostly a snoozefest. Things finally started to pick up again on the second act of Slipperman (A Visit from the Doktor) but that was fleeting too. As a closer, It wasn't too shabby. So where does that leave me? Very good disc one, though not perfect, and a largely forgettable & average disc two. Feels like 3.5 at best, if I see disc one as a 5, which I don't (not quite). So gotta round down.
Very 70’s Prog Rock style
Never been that conviced about this concept album from Genesis. Much preferred most other Genesis albums from the '70s, both before and after this one.
If you don't like Prog you won't like this. I like Prog but prefer Selling England and Foxtrot to this. This was Gabriel at his most controlling but since it appears that the rest of the band wrote the music in a series of jams and Peter waltzed off to write the lyrics. The music is the main reason for listening to this. I love Trick of the Tail which came after this and after Gabriel left so that says a lot. This is like a self indulgent trip (a 'concept' album) but the music is the redeeming feature.
This lamb is bland. I ordered spicy.
certainly had me crawling the carpet
Appreciate it but not for me
Genesis' magnum opus, with all the pros and cons that sentence conjures to the imagination
A genesis album. High production and unique
I grew up with 80's Genesis. 70's Genesis is a slightly different animal. I imagine my dad probably put this on with his mate Richard, smoked a spliff and thought it was awesome. I'm listening, sitting on a train on the way to work and it's pretty heavy going in places tbh.
Some good old school progressive rock.
Thought this was a little full of itself but not really all that coherent. The lyrics often get bogged down in conveying the story, yet I didn’t find the story particularly compelling or indeed comprehensible. Add in being very long and having some irritating noise intervals and I don’t think I’ll bother listening to this again.
Proggier and more intricate than I expected. Really well recorded, great flow. Songs didn’t really jump out individually but definitely changed my scope of what I thought this band was.
Teilweise sehr abgedreht. Ich mag Phil Collins, bin aber nicht so ganz von dem Album überzeugt.
Best Song: The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging. Equal parts futuristic and theatrical. Very cool. Worst Song: Hairless Heart. I'm here for the vocals, plain and simple. This sounds like the music that plays over the credits of an awful coming-of-age film. Overall: The whole album feels indulgent, from its production to its unnecessary length. That saccharine luxury surely overstays its welcome, and you end up wishing for some kind of raw emotion halfway through this monster album.
Te lang, maar er zit toch echt heel wat moois tussen. De zang van Gabriel tilt dit naar een hoger niveau. Als de heren eerder een punt hadden durven zetten zou dit een nog beter album zijn geweest.
3.5/5. Prog rock albums are really damn long.
I actually prefer 80s Genesis
For a hot minute, I thought this might be a hard 4-star or maybe even a 5-star review. It started out so strong. But then it devolved into self-indulgent chaos and I stopped caring before moving into active annoyance. That's not what you want, guys. You don't want your audience to be actively annoyed at you for wanking around on your instruments. Just keep laying down monster prog tracks and everyone will be happy. As it is, I can't bring myself to give this any more than 3 stars. Sorry, Mr. Collins.
whatever. got bored it’s not my vibe. not bad though
Felt like hard work at times but I mostly liked.
haven't listened rip
This band is weird and this album is so fucking long! It was a bit of a slog to get thru but there is some cool stuff in the weirdness, it’s just not for me. Felt a bit like a fever dream at times. Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel are still cool
Meh. A very long album where everything kind of bleeds together and sound the same.
First Genesis album. I am familiar with a few of their singles, but I can't really say had much expectations. I felt like the first half of the album was very slow. I questioned the quality of the production, maybe the mixing, idk but it sounded pretty rough. The second half of the album is a different story, especially the final 6 songs, all of which were great imo. Very long album, but the ending was nice.
Rock progresivo.
There was some bangers on this... I didnt listen to them all, however its like musical style? idk. I'll have to listen to it more
An early genesis album before I feel they reached their peak. This album is a bit lengthy. The synths that make genesis great are very raw on this album and at times are just bad. Collins does a good job as always but I felt like less calming instrumentals could’ve made this album a little more concise. 6.0/10
I started out liking it, and are bored with the repetition of synth and Gabriels voice. I think Gabriel's solo stuff is great but I found his range on this one too narrow. The instrumentals were great.
Heard this a few times previously, and I really like Genesis. 3/5
Good album interesting sound, does drag on towards the end a bit too long.
Good progressive rock
More prog than I expected. Not bad not great.
Interesting concept album, but a tad long and synthy
Good but too long
Not as bad as I had feared!
Pièces préférées: In the Cage, Broadway Melody of 1974, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, The Carpet Crawlers, Back in N.Y.C.
WAY too long an album. Nice but I lost interest. Liked the mix of Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins tho. 6/10
massa o progressivo e pa
Whoa...wasn't expecting this. I know the 4 album run from Trespass to Selling England. Never explored this... Ok half way in.... thing is I like i like prog and I find it a bit of a featureless landscape. I really think it needs several listens.. also those old sounding keyboard solos are becoming a bit wearing...on the positive note its good that they lost their lyrical whimsy. 2.75
Interesting mix of songs, nothing particularly stood out though. Could be worth another listen.
Seems a bit redundant to complain about this being self-indulgent. They tell you upfront what they are, so if you hit play, you accept their terms. It's still all a bit much. Whoever invented the phrase "Less is more" was talking to Genesis, and of course they didn't listen. Best track: In the Cage
6/10 - I really like, like 8/10 really like most of this album. But by the end im just so tired. Its too long for me. At some point, I completely zone out. I want to come back to this one with more intention however Fav Tracks: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, In the Cage, Back in NYC Fav Lyric: Heard before? ---–- ❌ Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? --–-- ❌ Will Listen Again? -- ✅
Not much to say about this one… It okay
Not for me, quite dreary
Tönt so dahin ohne auf den Punkt zu kommen
too long
I don't really like prog like this, like why does it have to be 96 minutes long, it's so noodly and loooooong. It just takes itself way too seriously for me I'm afraid. It's like, really camp, but so straight that it ruins the campness. Maybe if it was the 70s and I nothing to do in my public school digs apart from listen to this over and over again and smoke weed I'd have the time to find the value in it, but it's the go go 2020s rn who's got time for that?? My attention span has been rotted away by the Rizzler and Giovanni's Italian Deli Howyoudoin? and a vape addiction! I can only process hyperpop 30 seconds at a time!!! That said the bit where it sounds like farts is very funny.
There was a running joke on Top Gear about how much Richard Hammond hated Genesis. Jeremy Clarkson would always play them when he had the opportunity just to piss Hammond off. I didn't know what he was complaining about. How could Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins make a bad band? When I start the album I still didn't get the complaint. The music is good! But an hour and half later I get it. Even on a 1,000 mile road trip, Genesis' long meaningless meandering songs get really old. This took me two days to get through. I don't hate it, but man did it turn into a slog. 2.5 stars.
This isn't bad, but is a little too abstract and WAYYYY too long for me. At times this is so weird. There are some really strong moments, but some really weak ones. Liekd Songs: "Fly on a Windshield" , "Broadway Melody of 1974" , "Cuckoo Cocoon" , "In the Cage" , "Hairless Heart" , "The Carpet Crawlers" , "The Chamber of 32 Doors" , "Lilywhite Lilith" , "Anyway" , "Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist" , "Ravine" , "The Light Dies Down on Broadway" , "In the Rapids" , "It"
..
Surely there were better Genesis albums to choose from. This was endless.
Shit Random Album Generator I said I liked Genesis already why give me more so soon? I’ll be frank with you Random Album Generator - please stop with the Genesis for now I don’t want it please stop
A tough album to judge. Sometimes great with driving energy and cool riffs. But often undercut by moments so silly it's like the album doesn't want you to take it seriously. Ultimately the final product is bloated, messy and you have to really dig to get the great stuff
This is my first Genesis album listen. Immediate hmmm, rock opera concept albums are really hard to connect to. Songs plod along, nothing musically interesting for long stretches of time, everything sounds the same. I think I hate it. Carpet crawlers rescues this side. A few moments on 3 and 4, but I am surprised how much I dislike it. 2.5 rounded down Heard before? No Owned: No. 79/312 (25%) Will I get: No
Bizarre. 2.5
Not for me.
Shocked when I saw the three hr runtime until I realized that was the deluxe version. 1hr 34min is much more reasonable. You know, I ended up with about seven songs I really really liked out of this thing, could’ve been worse.
This album is too long😅😅 I think I pause multiple times, couldn’t really vibe with it, but I feel Counting Out Time is pretty good 😂
2.5
Not their best work.
I've never really listened to Genesis before. It seems to me that any 70s prog release either became a timeless classic or sounds incredibly dated. There is no in between. This one is just too long. I had to take a few breaks to make it through the whole thing. The story, what I could make out of it, is dumb. The band are all excellent musicians, but there is too much reliance on synths. It picks up a bit towards the middle but even the decent tracks just sound like "what if The Who rocked less hard?" which is not a question I had ever thought of nor want the answer to. It's all very tiresome. It does occur to me that there is probably a lot of music that sounds like this which I love, on account of having grown up with it. Maybe if I had been exposed to Genesis long ago I would feel differently.
Some cool moments mixed in with some very weird bits, but most importantly, there's "Honey, get hip - it's time to unzip / To unzip, zip-a, zip-a zip! Whipee!"
I love almost all of Peter Gabriel-era Genesis but frankly this album gives me the creeps. Not only is the subject matter distressing, the music is angular and off-putting, lacking the grace or charm of records like *Foxtrot* or *Selling England By The Pound*. If what you want is essentially a funhouse mirror-version of Genesis, go for it but so much of this album just seems wrong to me.
Not my taste
I don't love Genesis or prog rock. A lot of it just sounded so goofy. Hard to get through because it's so long
Me, listening to Peter Gabriel: 😃 Me, listening to Genesis: 🙄
I kept trying to listen to music beneath the vocal. It’s like proto Coldplay in that respect.
absolute dogshit
While I love Genesis's bigger songs, this album just didn't hit for me. It was long, it was a rock opera but I wasn't remotely invested, and it was mostly forgettable. My favorite songs were the ones with Phil Collins singing lead and not Peter Gabriel.
This is one of those albums that it clearly took a great deal of talent, skill and creativity to make. I just didn’t enjoy it. I always feel badly about giving a low rating to this kind of album. Apologies to most jazz and prog rock musicians. I just don’t vibe with you. Respect though! 2.5 for this one but I will probably round down. Genesis has enough fans to not worry about my score.
2.5/5. Saw a prog concept album with a few credits to Brian Eno and got pretty excited for this one. Sadly it never really clicked for me. The narrative is fine but never really hooked me (though it is better than most rock opera narratives, which tend to be awful.) musically it is all very well played but I still didn’t get a ton out of it personally.
Not for me. Proggy
I'm usually a fan of a concept album, but this felt like the soundtrack to a play I hadn't seen, and still didn't like. I found myself bored too often, but there is still some good music in here. Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats was my favorite on this listen, which is probably saying something.
Samma låt text men inte lika njutbar som Draft punk gör det
The last stretch of the first part is really good. Don't care much for the rest.
This album was a real drag for me. I found most of it pretty dull and honestly struggled to stay interested. The only song that actually clicked was “Counting Out Time” — everything else just felt like a long, boring prog workout with no real highs. Peter Gabriel’s vocals are all over this record with that constant crying, screaming, and scratching style that gets really tiring. On top of that, Phil Collins’ drumming and backing vocals are everywhere too, and his overall presence just adds to the stuffy, theatrical feel I couldn’t get into. I know this is considered a classic by many, but their voices and the whole atmosphere just didn’t work for me at all. The remaster is clean, but it didn’t make the songs any more exciting. Most tracks drag on way too long without much payoff. If you’re deep into 70s prog you might love it, but for me it was a big miss. I’ll stick to the shorter, more straightforward Genesis tracks instead.
Mom jeans.
For hardcore Genesis fans only.
2.9
I might have a small brain because I don’t understand the magnificent of this album. This album just left me confused and with a headache maybe I should’ve been born in the 70s to understand not really Vibing with it. There were two songs that I did like so you are safe from the dreaded one star review but you were desperately close I don’t think I needed to hear this album into the void you go
Phil Collins is aight. This album didn’t hook me but there were some enjoyable moments. I love this era but I don’t think this is one I’ll revisit
4/10
Jesus man. 90 minutes is too long for almost any album. And genesis of all bands too. Couldn't be further from my thing. Genesis had this smoothed over style thats is just so unappealing for me. Then they do some ambient stuff thats even further out from what im looking for. Its just alot i dont like. The one song that I felt anything for was counting out time but then I caught a few lyrics and it kinda grossed me out. Maybe im a prude or whatever but it was a bit icky for me. Straight up a not enjoyable record. I can see someone liking this but not me
Maybe this would be better as a film, because as a concept album I wasn't following the narrative at all. Outside of it being a concept album, the lyrics and music don't readily blend. Much of it is too long and too far out there for my taste.
Pretty dull prog.
Too long to keep enjoying or to hold my attention
Weird, man.
Почему так долго
Slides off my mind like it's Teflon-coated. I find little here to get a proper grip on. Possible exception: Counting Out Time (sidenote: does KT Tunstall have to share royalties for similarity to that one?). And soooooo looooong; had to listen in two installments.
I definitely prefer Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins’s solo stuff. This just felt like so much. It’s very long. Dramatic, but not my thing. I kept checking to see how many more tracks were left because it just kept going on and on
I found this to be a very boring, generic prog rock album. I’m not a big fan of prog rock in general and this one was so far for even the genre. I liked the later Genesis and I liked Peter Gabriel by himself, but the two together just didn’t work for me.
I find albums like this funny, because we have someone like Phil Collins who know I feel like he is now known as kind of a soft rock non controversial family friendly (Disney Tarzan soundtrack!) rocker, but this was so before that. This album reminded me a little of Jesus Christ Superstar or Godspell but one ever more shrooms. There was just too many instrumental riffs that were okay but sometimes felt like unnecessary filler. I didn't get to listen closely to the lyrics, but the vibe of a guy have a spiritual awakening felt really obvious (not sure if that is a good or bad thing). In the times I am sure this was great, but for me today it just felt blah.
I’m always suspect when I see something like, “people thought this originally sucked but then it gained a cult following years later” in the Wiki description. But I still try to go in with an open mind. The “this sucks” people were correct on this one. The songs feel very self indulgent and pretentious to me. Add that to the length and it’s just doing way too much. It’s a long and boring meander to nowhere.
This was about 80 percent terrible with 20 percent interesting, Peter Gabriel has output of wildly varying quality. It (the song) as good, quite liked anaesthetist and Lamia. Otherwise reminded me of a less unsettling Tommy, stock genesis music that's just a vehicle for some awful lyrics. Laughed particularly at "thank God for erogenous zones" but there was a boatload of other nonsense. There were other parts of songs that piqued my interest every now and then but by and large not very good.
I can't imagine how this could ever be cool for more than half an hour. If they had stuck to a single CD, I might have enjoyed the album, but as it is, it feels like "getting carried away with a mediocre idea" -the album. 2.5/5
"Opera Rock", "Album concept", "1h34". Ça sentait l'embrouille déjà.
Borderline unlistenable.
no more 70s guitar pls
Can we talk about prog rock for a second? If you're not familiar with that term, prog rock is "a subgenre of rock that emerged in the late 1960s/early 1970s, blending rock instrumentation with classical, jazz, and folk influences, often featuring complex, long-form compositions, virtuosic musicianship, and conceptual theme." I know it's a thing, I know people love it, I know that some amazing, beloved musical arrangements have been created in prog rock scenarios, and people hope that their beloved prog rock bands will just continue to play until everyone in the audience falls over dead. I, however, can only handle prog rock in small doses. And bud, this album is LONG - 24 songs at anywhere from 3 minutes to 9 minutes - with a full runtime of 95 minutes. It has a cult following, as do a lot of our friendly prog rock bands, and while I no longer judge people for their musical likes (mostly), I do wonder who has the patience for this whole thing. For the love of Peter Gabriel, I have shit to do, and it's not listening to this whole album in one sitting. This started out as a concept album against the storyline of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and I might have actually preferred that over this story of Rael, a "troubled and rebellious youth who is unexpectedly taken on a journey of self-discovery and identity as he encounters a series of bizarre incidents and characters." Knowing all this now, there might be a time that I actually sit down and learn about Rael's adventures, but today is not the goddamn day. This is a did not finish at 49 minutes. My nervous system could not take another bit of the twee-ass synths in the background. Standout: The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging, because that's where I completely disassociated from this experience.
I fear I did not have the prerequisite amount of drugs to get a kick out of this I also probably wasn't paying the right amount of attention, a bit daunted by its length so trying to get through tracks between work calls and whatnot rather than soaking up the whole thing in one go. Random thing that annoys me about streaming older albums is that it often doesn't make it clear where the gaps between sides/discs are which can be kind of important to understanding the flow of an album, especially a concept one like this. Give me Sledgehammer and Solsbury Hill anyday tho
not for me lmao
its okay
Strangely difficult to get through, considering that I like art rock, prog rock and Genesis.
Rock session on "Fly on a Windshield" is golden. AND it bleeds into the next song??? God forbid a group of white men catch a vibe.
meh
The lamb lies down on broadway - 2 Fly on a windshield - 2 Broadway melody of 1974 - 4 Cuckoo cocoon - 2 In the cage - 2 The grand parade of lifeless packaging - 2 Back in n.y.c. - 2 Hairless heart - 3 Counting out time - 3 The carpet crawlers - 4 The chamber of 32 doors - 3 Lilywhite Lillith - 4 The waiting room - 1 Anyway - 3 Here comes the supernatural anaesthetist - 2 The lamia - 2 Silent sorrow in empty boats - 2 The colony of slippermen - 2 Ravine - 2 The light dies down on broadway - 3 Riding the scree - 2 In the rapids - 3 It - 2
Not my style of prog music. Most of these songs sucked.
Found this weirdly hard to focus on; my mind kept drifting away.
So long.
I like the album as a concept piece and as an overall work of artistic expression. Relistenability and straightforwardness was a little wonky, but I think it was a cool idea with interesting sonic elements.
As much as I love PG (tbh, from face melt forward, tho obviously some great songs in the first two solos) I just don't resonate with this Genesis era at all. None of it is even “ok” for me. I dunno why, it's just all so self indulgent. Was there no producer in the studio to be like, hey guys, do we really need 23 tracks of this? Obviously the musicianship is top notch, PG is a great vocalist, but the songs just do not resonate. At all.
it occurs to me that i was a pretentious artist at one point in my youth so i really cant fault these guys for high concept. they are great musicians. they are right in that prog rock genre here with all of the hallmarks. they eventually get poppy. this is kind of nice to see the start. i'm not a genesis fan or phil collins, so a 2.
Oof this one was a rough listen. I don't necessarily dislike prog rock and it's clear how this album was foundational to the genre, but it goes on waaaaay too long. A bunch of the songs are just irritating noises that didn't need to be there, while others feel like rambling lyrics that don't match the music at all. There are good songs mixed in there, but overall it really feels like this album is trying to waste your time.
If listening to your album takes longer than watching most movies, then it better be fucking good. This was not. This self-indulgent album was made purely for the enjoyment of the artists themselves with no thought at all for the listener.
When a British prog band is coming up with a subject for a concept album and their first idea is “a young Puerto Rican New Yorker goes on a musical adventure” they should at least think of one more idea and see if that one is better.
The listener goes for a long lie down
1.65
Not a Genesis fan
It's fine, not really super interesting to me though
Wow, this is a lot of music and a lot of words, none of which seems to stick with just one listen. I think I’ve listened to this only once before in my life and am unsure if I’ll ever do so again. Which might be too bad for me because there seems to be some good stuff to be found here if you can get past the imposing runtime and get several listens in to let it absorb. Ya I’m definitely finding it hard to remember any of these riffs and melodies. Maybe too clever for its own good? I think a good way to experience this would be with visuals, say a full length feature film with this album as the soundtrack. Can’t deny the talent here though and also cool to see where they came from on their way to pop songwriters extraordinaire! And I do enjoy their later pop songs immensely so hopefully some of those albums are on the list.
Know the band of course. Never listened to the album. Track one could be a who song. Great bass sound on this track. Considering how unenthused i’ve ever been anout Phil Collins’ work, this isn’t horrible. Didnt realise Peter Gabrielle was in Genesis. The music os a bit the who, but the lyrics are a bit rush. I’ve heard people say Phil is the best drummer/singer out there and i’ve never understood it but get it on this album. He’s probably the best thing about the album. Actually, maybe the main singer is Peter Gabriel. He aounds lile Phil. The rest is a bit rock opera-ish, the lyrics annoyingly impenetrable. Not sure im going to get through this whole album. I have only given this a half arsed listen. I might revisit later but then again is more prog rock what i am missing in my life?
What a weird ass concept album.
2 because I don't hate prog rock. -1 for the sheer overwhelming quantity, dear god. +1 for Phil Collin's khakis iykyk
There was so much of this. A lot was, like, ignorable coffee shop kind of music but then a line would cut through into my consciousness and the line would be something weird as hell like EROGENOUS ZONES and I did not enjoy that. 1.5 rounding up
Look, its technically great. but it just sounds like Pink Floyd. But with some weird ass lyrics like "erogenous zones, I love you"
Not for me, but there were good proggy synch chunks I appreciated.
I’ve tried many times to like Genesis, listened to their their albums and I just don’t get it.
The start was OK but it just went downhill from there.
Sometimes less is more.
This will be the moment, from now, from this moment on, this’ll be the moment, starting now, of the genesis of McGillicutty. The elegant prose of the third generation, and unfortunately named Michael McGillicutty on an episode of NXT from 2010. 15 years after this poetic masterpiece emanated from an Albany arena, shockwaves remain rippling through the literary and wrestling worlds, as we all come to terms with what began that day. From the longest running Royal Rumble run (still active today), to a lacklustre tag tenure with Ryback, we’re still paying the price that was set on that warm August eve. I hope to get an update via this record. God bless MM. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - I’m pretty sure this isn’t Michael McGillicutty. Much like a hard time getting through this song, I’ve been had. Fly on a Windshield - Are we really doing a celebrity lyrics song? How many times can one “start the fire?” Cuckoo Cocoon - Whoa there pally, this album is bonkers!! It’s actually way less conventional than I expected. In the Cage - This song is about that time I did hard time in bird jail. Do NOT mess with the budgie’s supply line of suet. Cost me an eye and fresh newspapers in my cell for a week. The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging - Phil, you’d love modern day. The packaging is full of life. It’s the products that are no longer any good, due to the fact that, well, we eat what we’re sold and don’t really have alternate recourse. But packaging is full of life! Back in N.Y.C - Hi there. I have now discovered that this record is 94 minutes long. Cue the late night New York Saxophone. Or the prog bass? Hairless Heart - Finally got that cleared up. Good for you. Counting Out Time - Me too, guys, me too. The Carpet Crawlers - Yeah those buggers are gonna set you back at least a few days soaking up the fumes under the big ol’ circus tent. The Chamber of 32 Doors - It’s 36 chambers, idiot. Lilywhite Lilith - I mean this whole thing is pretty weird. I’m liking most of that. The Waiting Room - More off the wall psychedelia. I can’t believe that’s what this is. Anyway - We’ve got big bombastic, almost metallic riffs? Briefly. Anyway… Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist - Again? I’ve already been out to sleep… hey-oh! The Lamia - This sucks. I mean it’s about being eaten by weird, humanoid butterflies in another dimension? And when they consume the blood they feel the pain of the mortal realm? I think? Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats - Change out “boats” for “comedy clubs” and you have a pretty good title for an open-mic odyssey. The Colony of Slippermen - Amazingly cool intro, until, well, the vocals. It was a nice reprieve for a while. Ravine - Maritime psychic tribute. The Light Dies Down on Broadway - What about the lamb? Where did that lil jokester go? We’re talking about heart wrenching decisions now? What the hell is going on here? Riding the Scree - My second favourite river in made up Genesis land. Only the real Gen-Heads know the other rivers. It’s not my job to educate you. In the Rapids - I don’t care about this anymore. It - Stephen Ling did it better. Then! Stephen KING did it even better than that guy. This whole thing feels like if Lord of the rings was re-written for homeschooled Christian kids. Besides the mention of New York. Shield your ears, youth of Christ. This is like if Rush were neutered and American. Are they British? I don’t care. This was fine. Way too long, and every cool prog moment was cancelled out by some dumbass pop moment. This surprised me though, as I expected 94 minutes of “in the air tonight,” which sounds like it’s on the menu at Guantanamo. I won’t return to the land where the Scree flows through the fuckin’ uhh sorrowcean or whatever. Get this away from me. Especially the stinky parts. 2-2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Fly on a Windshield, Back in N.Y.C, Prog weird stuff
Listened to this, then Dark Side of the Moon. Dark Side did it better in half the time. Sometimes too many drugs and stop Amy themes isn’t the right move.
Not too bad of an album, it was alright having it in the background, and some may even say quite enjoyable, but definitely a bit meh overall. Given that this is quite old, I assume that it wasn't too bad back in the day.
I was tempted to rate this "listenable" but I really don't get on with Genesis and found it somewhat tedious.
I mean, it was a good concept. It just feels like they didn't translate it to record. 2/5
I feel like once I know progressive rock better I might appreciate this more, but as it stands it wasn't noteworthy to me.
To those for whom the concept album isn't self-indulgent enough, may I present: the Rock Opera! Far too long, there is a lot of nonsense on here. Basically its only redeeming feature is that it's better than Tommy.
Too big for its prog rock boots in my humble opinion. I think there's a good chance my gen z proclivities are preventing me from taking this as seriously as it seems to require. There are some spots that I really enjoyed, and some spots I couldn't really stand
Genesis are unfortunately one of those bands that - in my opinion - are only good for their radio hits. I just can't get into their albums. There wasn't a single track on this collection that I connected with. Meh.
Not a fan, Gabriel and Collins together
Wow, can I get some of what they had, they don't make musical albums like this anymore (thankfully!!). Ok as background music but it didn't love this. Best: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Worst: In the Rapids
Given that this was a 90min album, I actually didn't get as tired as expected listening to it. That being said, it's probably a 2.5 rounded down, probably deserving of a 3 if I understood the concept behind the rock opera but won't be investigating that much rn
Way too much filler and not enough killer in this double album. There were one or two songs that grabbed me early on and at the end (like "Counting out Time"). But that middle just drones on and could be cut without any real loss of the quality of the album.
About what I would expect from an hour and a half album on this list. Some good, some bad, and some that should've been cut out.
