Not a fan of rock opera albums

I am morally opposed to albums like this. They're like 3 hour movies, even if sometimes they can be good, if your movie is that long then you need to cut it down. And this DEFINITELY could've been cut down. I was ready to be done by the end of disc 1, and then I had an entire disc 2 to get through. Honestly this should be a 1 but there were a couple really strong songs. But it feels like they listened to a bunch of musical theater before this, and I mean it in the meanest way possible. Favorites: Broadway Melody of 1974, Anyway

There is very little I liked about this album. The songs are long, the album is long, there is too much talking singing, and too much whisper singing.

Look, I like Genesis with Peter Gabriel, but I prefer Collins as front man. All their top hits are from Collins. This double concept album is a no from me. I've always meant to listen to it, but I couldn't. Today I jumped and fell quite miserably. I'll have to go and listen to their _normal_ stuff for a while. Disappointing, bloated, terrible, story telling. Sorry.

There are elements of each song that I’ve liked when other bands did it; discordance, keys, synths, nonsensical lyrics, etc., but for some reason every way Genesis did it is just off putting to me. I find myself either saying, “get on with it” or “is it done yet” repeatedly. I keep thinking the song is building to something or going someplace and it goes the other direction. I was really hoping this album would turn around my preconceived notions about Genesis and in a way I was impressed by the experimental nature of the album, but for the most part all my doubts were reaffirmed.

I generally like prog but this didn't quite grab me. I also found it really hard to understand the vocals so I wasn't following the story at all. Counting Out Time had a catchy hook but the lyrics were cringey, and Carpet Crawlers was the only other standout to me.

Very hit and miss for more, but more miss than hit. Too much broadway.

No other way to say it: this is just too much. I love Peter Gabriel’s solo stuff, but this album is so prog-rock it almost doubles back to become regressive rock. Disc one does absolutely have some bangers on it, but disc two is a total slog. And I feel like towards the end of the double LP is really where you want to hold the listener’s attention.

Boy this was long. Feels like it could have been a single album if they kept the good songs. Didn't hate it but it was a slog.

Would not buy

How is this good to anyone?

Far, far too long. I kinda appreciate the effort, but there's just too much, and a lot of it is just not that good.

Respect and I like most of it.

Giant double album prog rock opera that tells a drawn out story of a protagonist on a spiritual journey. There were moments I enjoyed and/or appreciated but it was mostly a chore to get through. Especially the second half. Standout track is "The Carpet Crawlers".

I am sure this was very deep and meaningful at the time, especially if you were stoned out of your box, but it just sounds a bit cliché and the lyrics sound rather creepy sex pesty

Nothing special. But maybe I just don't get them.

Er, what the hell? The concept s pretentious nonsense. The costumes are ludicrous. There are glimmers of decent music but they are swamped by everything else and it is far too long to hold my interest. Love Peter Gabriel as a solo artist but this ain’t it

Kind of boring, and weird in a way that a lot of prog is. If you're making prog music it seems to give you license to be irritating and twee in your musical approach, and to be overly sincere about random bullshit. As I'm writing this right now they've just started singing about erogenous zones, and it made me throw-up in my mouth a little bit. It's not all bad. There's some good music in there in small spots, and some interesting instrumentation in places. But it's mostly just tedious, and long, and I really don't like it.

Eh I didn't really enjoy this.

There were some nice sections and a few good songs but the whole thing is bloated and pretentious. It just drags on forever and lacks excitement even though there is a lot going on. Favorites: Hairless Heart, The Carpet Crawlers

2.5/5 legendary band but Genesis is not my cup of tea

I’m really curious about these guys. I know Phil and I love his slow songs but this, I know this is a different breed. It’s like Rush from what I can tell so far. And druggy Bowie. Ya not for me. I appreciate the musicianship but other than that, I have no idea what’s going on. Bowie and Rush seemed to have more direction. It’s crazy to see what Phil Collins became after going through this musical maze of sound. Choice cut: In the Cage

Terrible

Too long

When I saw it was a double album, I wasn't sure I could be bothered.

This is a really long Prog album. Didn't change my opinions on Prog.

Most of the songs are short, so in theory it shouldn't have felt all that overwhelming, but it was a slog nonetheless. The one track with a tune (Counting Out Time) comes as a huge relief even though it isn't very good, and it's not even halfway through. No thanks.

I was into this as a teen bc I love genesis Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins but hearing it now - nope. Too folky/weird only a few tracks like the title track that say I wouldn't mind hearing that again...

I don't know if there is any reason for this, but to me, Genesis feels a bit like kosher Christian rock. It always feels very tame and non-offensive. This is a bit ironic, seeing as this particular album is quite political, but that is still the feeling I get when listening to it. While one must admit it being impressive to craft a 2 hour long rock opera, I must say that I didn't particularly enjoy it. Thematics are appreciated, but not rock operas. And I've also realized that I don't really like Genesis either, so overall this didn't stir up much feelings in me, rather than wishing it to soon be over. If you like Geneis, this is probably your thing, but to me it was dull. Strong 2.

concept album with a story devised by Gabriel about Rael, a Puerto Rican youth from New York City who is suddenly taken on a journey of self-discovery. Incredibly long and frankly a bit boring.

I know the album name, I remember the cover from the record shop, the title song was a rock radio staple when I was a kid. I am a huge Peter Gabriel fan, but more the latter stuff when he was about the music, world vibes, and much less theatrical. This album is very theatrical and dovetails nicely with his first solo release. Are they telling a story? It feels like chapters not songs, I was lost from the outset. The title track has the hook, some weirdness and a good sound. They sure tamed Phil Collins drum sound down compared to his solo work, it might have made the album better to bring more bombastics to the forefront. The keyboard solo in "In The Cage" was so dated. All the filters on his vocals became really annoying by the 10th song, he sounds half psycho. "Counting Out Time" sounds like a Phil Collins track. It's got rubber ducky sounds but it's catchy and the second best song on the album. "The Carpet Crawlers" is considered a fringe hit, but it's just barely better than average. Best song I didn't know... "Lilywhite Lilith". I didn't enjoy the pace or the songs. I could see where this sound would go in the future so it's a glimpse into coming greatness but this was too prog rocky for me! There was no relaxing after the first song, it was a stressful listen for me and I can't say I enjoyed it. 2 stars at best, if it wasn't PG & Genesis I doubt I would have finished it.

While I do like Genesis, this album is not even close to my favorite of theirs. This album falls in and out of psychedelic rock sounds, which just doesn't do it for me.

Rating: 5/10 Meh.

I suppose I appreciate what they were doing here, but the moment it was over my mood improved and my energy level shot up by 100%. I never want to hear it again. 2 stars.

Not atrocious. One good song in there, most of them are fine. Far, far, far too long. Maybe it should be 1 star instead?

More Genesis/Peter Gabriel, my opinion hasn’t changed - I still find it meh.

my god way waaaayyyy too long. like an hour too long

It insists on itself. I thought it was fairly decent, but it felt they were doing complex chord progressions for the sake of proving they could execute those progressions. Overly complicated without a melody for the listener to catch on to. Subjective, not for me.

A cool concept that may supersede its actual execution on the album. “Broadway Melody” into “Cuckoo Cocoon” have some interesting bits of Zeppelin IV influence with the rolling melody guitars and flute playing. “In the Cage” was a cool rockestra thriller and used that whirly synth really well for it’s time, but even then I’ve heard Genesis and other bands do songs like this in a way that stuck with me more than this track did. “Back In NYC” was the mail in the coffin for me. There’s plenty of bombast and dramatic composition, in fact, there’s too much - I had a hard time grasping what was going on lyrically. The fact that this was only maybe a thiiiird of the way through the albums 1.5 hour runtime was daunting. The rest was a slog. Maybe a close reading or a visual companion would’ve got this one over the line, I just wasn’t able to get as lost in this world as I wanted. I know Genesis was capable of more than the sum of this projects parts, and I think the shortcomings can be largely attributed to the bands internal troubles with Peter Gabriel at the time.

Don’t know any of their albums 🤷🏻‍♂️

my god, this tried my patience. i was initially excited because who doesn't love Land of Confusion? but my god, what a slog. cornball in a bad way. that synth sounded like it was made by fisher-price. also it's 90 minutes long. i'm a HATER!!!!!!!!!!!

Tough listen. Love some Phil Collin will pass on Peter. This is a long record.

I would have enjoyed any two songs by themselves. The album was a slog.

Way to 70s for my liking

It felt like some abstract poetry. It sounded good at times and it seemed like there was something they were trying to say I just couldn’t figure out what it was.

It felt like it was gonna cool places, but just didn’t. Phil Collins doesn’t shower often.

Mike Rutherford used to talk in so many riddles! It was impossible to ever know what he was on about! I think Paul Carrick did wonders for him! 1.6 9/23 Counting Out Time

Some of you may be familiar with the simple, but insightful, take on crafting a successful plot made by South Park's Matt Stone and Trey Parker. In a nutshell, if your story is full of "this happened" and then "this happens" you are probably doing it wrong - a compelling story is made up of "this happened" so "this happens" therefore "this happens". A chain of events or actions and their consequences. Prog rock, to me, is the musical equivalent of the "and the " problem - a load of unrelated musical ideas strung together one after the other. I know plenty of people who swear 70s Genesis albums are the greatest thing to ever happen to humanity, and, lord knows, I've given those first six or so albums plenty of chances to grow on me. But it just isn't happening. While I "get it" and appreciate the craft, it just doesn't appeal to me. It has its high points, but the tracks don't work in isolation as well as say, a Pinball Wizard does taken out of the context of Tommy. Still, it's a bonkers narrative, but as with so many things of this ilk, I'm not so sure it is really as deep and meaningful as it pretends it is - it's all just a bit silly really (I think that's the third album this week that has led me to that same conclusion).

I don’t get it/over my head?

Maybe it's not fair that I should get this just 2 days after Crimson King, but this prog rock novicepiece seriously lacks some much needed epicness. If there is one thing a prog rock album needs to have - it is epicness. The singer's warbly voice and cringy lyrics don't help their cause.

Oh wow. This was an "experience" that I don't want to relive.

I am pretty sure I’d need to devote a lot more time to this album to fully appreciate it, but I just don’t want to do that.

The Lamb was lying down because he feel asleep ...

I don't really like Genesis too much to begin with, so having to listen to over an hour and a half of them is way too much.

Listens: 1.5 Standout tracks: None Nothing particularly exciting for me.

I adore Genesis, how can a single album have none of the songs I like by Genesis? Familiar with some like Carpet Crawlers and The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging but none of them "do it" for me.

ugh. I did not like this.

Noped out at about a hour. The Venn intersection of Slightly Less Cringe Than ELP and Way Less Cool Than MTV Peter Gabriel isn't enough to support 94 minutes. I don't care about cover art but wow that's dumb.

It was too long and experimental, i couldnt feel the concept clear enough so it didnt make sense to me

I can appreciate the ambition and scope of this album but, ultimately, I was mostly just bored. Favourite tracks: The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging Won't be revisiting this one. 2/5

I got about 45 minutes in, and realized, this is just not for me.

This album does absolutely nothing for me. Probably 2 songs on it ar OK.

Very obviously early Genesis, not a huge fan

I have the same problem with this album as I do with Tommy. It feels like they spend more time focusing on creating a narrative than creating memorable music. A lot of the songs here sound the same and nothing really stands out. If you are going to make an hour and a half plus album you need some absolute bangers to carry you through that runtime. The Wall has Another Brick in the Wall, Comfortably Numb, Mother. Mellon Collie has Zero, 1979, Tonight Tonight. Songs in the Key of Life has Sir Duke, Pastime Paradise, Isn't She Lovely. This album has 20 half baked songs that meander and melt together into one boring blob of prog rock. If this album had a normal runtime (half of what it currently is) I would give this a mid/low 3, but it a horrendous hour and a half of nothing. If you want a good hour and a half long album about a lamb check out The Lamb As Effigy by Sprain, they remind me of Swans. Mid 2.

Can't say I really get the hype around Genesis after listening to this. It's not a sound I'd usually lean towards, I wasn't particularly entertained while listening to this, only one or two songs sort of stuck out to me. This is kind of like background movie music to me, but I don't know... maybe I just haven't gained appreciation for prog-rock yet. That said, I didn't hate it, I was just bored.

Progrock is totaal mijn straatje niet. En het is nog een dubbelalbum ook. Typisch ... Enfin, het klinkt allemaal wel aardig, goede grooves hier en daar. De teksten van Peter Gabriel zijn helaas net zo pompeus als de muziek (en het hele genre progrock), en af en toe zelfs ronduit beschamend ("erogenous zones I love you – without you, what would a poor boy do"??) Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist".

Why are the most challenging albums to listen to always double albums? Any patience I had for this prog rock nightmare was lost when I heard the lyric "Erogenous zones I love you."

There is a decent single album somewhere in these songs, but for being 90+ minutes the whole thing gets very old pretty quickly. For many of the songs, the vocals just get washed out by the instruments, or the whole song just sounds like noise without much groove. 4/10

They’re trying to be Pink Floyd or The Who but falling very short of that.

It’s alright

ALT for lang, og alt for meget Phil Collins...

I don't think the chaotic development of this album did it any favors, it has elements of quality but I think each track suffers from some unpleasant or dated oddities.

And I'm being generous with this

Not my favorite Genesis album but definitely worth a listen. It's kind of different, maybe theatrical or something else I can't put my finger on. Would be nice to have on in the background for another activity, nice ambiance but you don't really need to get into it.

Something I always hated about prog-rock is that it's usually a bunch of musicians proving how really great and technically proficient they are, without making really great and technically proficient songs. I personally find this dichotomy more interesting 4/10 Bloated, boring and pretentious.

As much as I enjoy Genesis's later stuff man this stinks. It is such a long, dull album which sure does cool stuff. Phil Collins is great as usual and I'm so glad they made him the lead after this.

Belanglos. Hab es für eine 40min Autofahrt ausgesucht und konnte demnach nicht mittendrin auf was anderes wechseln. Gesang klingt manchmal wie Bowie aber da höre ich lieber Bowie

Musically nice but nothing exciting. No songs that stuck out.

Some nice moments but the obsessive over use of electronics ruined anything good

Bloated

Not really my style.

Just too bloody long.

Much prefer the more commercial period for Genesis i.e., post Peter Gabriel. Too progressive rock for my tastes.

Always amuses me anytime I'm reminded just how prog Genesis were in the 70s...still lame though

God that plodded.

Phew! Got through it. The 70s hey! Crazy times. To be fair , there probably would be a few decent songs here if they just made it 40% shorter, changed the lyrics, changed the synth and most of the rest of the music.

Prog rock not really my genre, particularly when as uninspiring as from Messrs. Gabriel, Collins, Rutherford. I did like *some* moments. That said, why stop at a 90 minute double? I felt that with just a few longer/additional songs there was a potential triple album lurking here....;)

Oh if only we’d been served “never mind the bollocks” the day after instead of the day before this. If an album could encompass everything that was so painfully unexciting about the pre-punk rock era, and perfectly frame why the energy of a new movement was so desperately needed, then this is it. This was dull, really dull. A tedious listen of such epic length that to listen beyond the first disc is an act of self abuse. A concept album. A double album. Prog rock. Everything I’m not looking for and more in a pretentiously “meh” package. Tiresome.

There's probably no point going over old ground about double-albums, because a double-album that is also a concept record has even greater challenges. The White Album could potentially be winnowed down to a single disc, but The Wall couldn't. The benefit of telling a narrative is that, if the story is strong enough, you can be excused a few musical lulls - it happens in opera all the time. But, like Wagner, you need incredible moments to balance those interminable quarters of an hour. I don't even like The Wall all that much, but I recognise that the almost title track, Comfortably Numb and Mother are big songs that hold up the rest of the record. I borrowed The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway from Belfast Music Library in 1999 or 2000. I still have no clue what the story is. The three songs that taped from the CD to keep were the title track, Carpet Crawlers, and Counting Out Time. These are still three songs that stick out for me, although Counting Out Time is obviously not good. Neither tunes nor tale are holding up this pair of platters - it cannot be streamlined, but it is also lightweight, almost vapourous once you reach The Chamber of 32 Rooms. What would one cut? There is so little variation in the music and not much cohesion in the story. By contrast, their previous album, Selling England by the Pound, has more musical diversity and more engaging storytelling in any single song. Compare Counting Out Time with I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) or In the Cage with Dancing with the Moonlit Knight. Although, let it be known that this 2.5 is not equivalent to the 2.5 I gave Hot Rats by Frank Zappa. This is more like the 2.5 I gave Bayou Country by CCR. There are things to like in the musician, if not on this particular record. Oh, I gave Bayou Country 2. Shame on me. Scoring music is hard. I only had time to listen once to this album which I am encountering for the first time. But my impression is that it is silly without irony and has the quality of feeling like the work of a clever music student who has earnestly set out to make The Greatest Musical in the Universe. This is exactly what young people who don’t yet know their trade should be doing and I credit Peter Gabriel and co for their energy and self-belief. This is pretty bad stuff. The main problem, I think (only 1 listen) is that the lyrics dominate everything else not just because there is so much of them but because while the studied slickness of so many 5/8 and 7/8 time bars gives the veneer of meticulous planning and rehearsal the lyrics force the top line to work against all that. No compromise was made to the contour or rhythm of the melody - no word left behind. It all had to go in. This would be dandy if there was an ounce of real poetry in The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway but it’s all excruciating. There are end rhymes but there’s no sense of rhythm or metre; no elegance of language whatsoever. I won’t quote any but since ‘it’ was the last thing on the album and thus the last lyric that positively bowled me over I direct the reader to that atrocity. 2/5

Look - I dig Peter Gabriel, but a 90 minute Prog Rock epic about a Lamb and Broadway is an avenue too far! Two stars because there are hints of Gabriel’s solo sound at times.

Highlights: Hairless Heart, Lillywhite Lilith, Anyway. In a nutshell: another bloated concept album I don't know what to make of Lamb Lies Down. It's unconventional, weird, experimental...the definition of prog. It is a strange mix of Pink Floyd prog meets Brian Eno meets Yes. There were a few WTAF moments (specifically in Counting Out Time) and I struggled to pay attention from Track 9 onwards. Again, just because you can make a double album doesn't mean you should. That said, this provided the blueprint for Peter Gabriel's solo material, which is worth exploring. Overall: 4/10

I liked this album less than I thought. Of course there were interesting and good moments. However there were too many moments that were too dragged out or boring, and on some songs I did not really enjoy the vocals (Cuckoo Cocoon, The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging). The biggest downside for me is that this album is goes on for too long. I was quite tired at the end of listening to it. Favourite tracks: In the Cage, Hairless Heart, The Carpet Crawlers, The Lamia, The Light Dies Down on Broadway

Curious stuff, this. Some of the first album was actually pretty good, sounding fairly modern in style and vocal effects. But crazy imagery and allusion that didn’t hold together for me. Then the second album just came undone in most respects - again, wife vs music.

I’ve never heard of this album - so much happening on here. Some songs weren’t that bad (‘broadway melody of 74’) but o found myself skipping through sings as the album progressed. Definitely had vibes of the who’s Tommy. Will probably never listen again but good to know it exists.

Largely unlistenable and turgid.

The older I get, the more I'm too old for this. Give me Rush or give me death.

Way too forgettable to be that long. It wasn't bad but I couldn't tell you anything about it afterwards. And it was long. 3/10

94 minutes

I listened to this while cooking and that was pleasant I guess but none of the songs really stood out to me. Absolutely not bad, but I guess it was a bit boring and mediocre.

Not a genesis album I liked at all

Welcome to some brainy opera

I went into this with no context at all, except knowing that this was Peter Gabriel's last album with Genesis and that it was a 94 minute double album. I kind of wish I'd read more about this. Is this a concept album? Is there a story, or a theme that runs throughout? It's hard to tell because there's so much there to take in. And that I think is this album's biggest problem. This didn't need to be a double album. There is what's clearly a lot of filler here. Short, two minute instrumental songs that, while they sonically vibe with the rest of the album, really feel like filler. My guess is that they had more than enough content for one album but not enough for a double and decided to stretch. And that kind of sucks because it falls into the trap that I feel like a lot of double albums do. Rarely does a double album match the demand of its length and keep the consistency up the whole time. An example of this is The Who's "Quadrophenia" which for some reason isn't on this list. Another might be Pink Floyd's "The Wall," which is on this list. But even the Beatles had to resort to filler tracks on their self-titled album (The White Album). Anyway, there's some cool stuff here like I said, it just gets lost in the double album of it all. I wanted to like it, but I wasn't crazy about it. Also kind of happy to be done with Genesis, to be honest. Two stars. Standout Tracks: In the Cage, Back in NYC, Anyway, Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist

My favorite Genesis album and I can't make it all the way through. Carpet Crawlers and the title track are my favorite tunes but this is not my jam, sorry.

I was dreading this one. The only album to date which made me physically ill. Peak nausea around The Supernatural Anesthetist. Came back later and finished the monstrosity. The only good thing about this album is the title and the bit in the title song where they sing the title. Like 20 seconds of an hour+ album.

Too long, and too many atmospheric meh songs

I like Peter Gabriel and Collins and some genesis and tried to get into this project . Unfortunately , even after a couple of listens it just didn’t click for me . It strikes me as something that may grow on me overtime if I keep revisiting but as for today, it’s hard to say I liked it

No thanks, didn't need a 90 minute Tommy wannabe today.

This is exactly what I’m talking about when I say prog is dumb and stupid and boring. This is just the same dogshit song for an hour and a half and there’s probably some chump out there that thinks it’s the greatest thing ever created simply because the songs are long and it sounds goofy. At least Pink Floyd has good songs. This is ass

A banda sempre funciona melhor com seus integrantes separados.

The phrase "concept album" normally sends me running for the "off" button. They are usually pretentious crap. Still, I entered this with hope as I do like some Genesis tracks. I was thoroughly bored after about 25 minutes and irritated by "Counting Out Time". 2/5.

Genesis doesn't do anything for me, even a double album

An hour and a half and you've used some time signatures, am I supposed to be impressed?

**An ok album, nothing exciting

Boring and lasted over 90 minutes

pretty long, i like some of the songs, others arent my thing

I got about 9 tracks into this, thinking that it was pompous and self-indulgent. I mean, prog is meant to be pompous and self-indulgent, but this doesn't manage to be interesting with it. I looked at the track listing and discovered I was only just over a third of the way through it and I've decided to give up. There simply isn't enough time in my life for this.

I'm glad I got exposure but that was a rough and extremely long listen

At first I was super Cuckoo cocoon was cool In the Cage Counting Out Time is disgusting, sry this song just single handedly knocked a point off this score nah sorry I gave you a good shot, there were some decent stuff but other than those select songs this aint great

Interesting, but not quite my style.

I get why it's on this list but it's not for me.

Could someone have told them no? This album is over 90 minutes of which we did not need.

Oh heck... I don’t have time for this…

Not my jam

Every time they get a good bit going, they start throwing in cheesy prog cliche sounds. Album is way, way too long. For early Genesis, it’s okay. But I can’t wait for it to end. 2/5

geter pabriel

Meh altough a great band with amazing musicians and incredible song writing, this concept album falls short for my taste. Its a great story but seems more like a music score for play or a musical. Its OK but not their best stuff also it was too long for not great.

Really really mid

thought it was boring and every time i decided to listen to the lyrics they were genuinely insane

Generally enjoy Genesis, generally don't enjoy concept albums. This one didn't do much for me

Putting their massive career aside and listening to this for what it is, is difficult when you remember 'Sussudio' and the rest of Phil Collins' hideous legacy. However, this is when Peter Gabriel had Centre stage. You have to give credit to Mr Collins as his drumming is exceptional. I have no idea of what the songs were about, apart from the life story of a random Puerto Rican or something. Take the music as a whole it was very good in a lot of places. My biggest criticism is that it is just too long. If it had been half as long it might have got an extra star.

It's got a few interesting instrumental moments but it's just too long for me and I don't like the singer's voice

Round two for Genesis! First one was Selling England by the Pound. On this record, I discovered Phil and Peter have moments where they sound quite similar vocally. At least back then they did! For the first 5 songs off this album, I found myself going, WOW, finally, a bunch of SONGS! These are weird, but there are motifs and choruses and just enough structure for me to sink my teeth into. If this is a nice 8-10 song record it'll get 4 stars from me. Alas. The record just gets bizarre by the end, and it goes on and on and on. So many songs. I found myself wondering if it was just a jam session. So much of it felt like a one take improv session. Then I read the Wikipedia and it turned out to sort of be exactly that! I know a lot of Genesis fans LOVE this album and I'm not here to argue. In fact, I'd love to hear from them and learn more about what they connect with about it. Because for me, I liked this more than Selling England by the Pound, but it still wasn't something I'd eagerly return to.

It's very much conceptual prog-rock, isn't it? Sort of in the vein of Tommy and The Wall. It's a genre that, for me, hasn't aged terribly well at all. Partly because it has a tendency to take itself too seriously, leading to unnecessarily long albums.

I am enjoying this well enough, and I’m glad a project like this exists… I guess I’m finding it hard to stay focused and engaged for 23 tracks though haha This level of ‘progressive’-ness is approaching Rock Opera territory. I’m finding a lot of it to be sonically appealing but it’s hard for me to connect with a ‘groove’ here. too much progressive messing around for me and not enough groove. 2 stars instead of 3 because I know Genesis is capable of 'progressive and catchy' and this isn't really it.

First listen Saved 7/23 Top track: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

Lots of cool synth parts, some good riffs, thunderous bass and epic sweeping passages. Peter Gabriel has the best voice of all the prog singers. But it's really a pretty tedious chore getting through this. It's an album of good moments that come and go without leaving much impression bc they're mired in a million overly elaborate ideas.

OMG. why?????

Heady and unique. Between the punchy lyrics and weird sounds, it reminds me a little bit of Pearl Jam. Didn't love it, but I do respect it.

should have been an EP

Struggle with Genesis TBH.

It had a moment or two but not nearly enough to justify the 90 minute slog

Pretty much forgot to listen to this because I was watching the Olympics all day.

Has it's moments but so much of this is actively terrible - Counting Out Time may be the worst song I've encountered yet

Ok, but nothing really exciting to me. Seemed like they wanted to emulate Rush a bit, but it just didn't have the same magic. 2.5/5

För lång och intetsägande.

Rambly prog rock

Prog that's not for me. They song titles annoyed me too.

Puuduttava ja tylsä

Joutava, vaikkakin kuunneltava

Without that key Wikihint about Rael and his real long, strange journey this album would have been even more challenging to enjoy. I like Genesis, but this one didn’t work for me. Some of the songs are too long, the album is too long - but I’m not sure cutting out songs makes it any better. Generously (2.5*s)

This album is too long for it's own good, even after reading the album summary about it telling Rael's story (a very pertinent detail actually) it's still too long. "Counting Out Time" was an ok song until the terrible kazoo solo in the last minute, on the contrary the entire first half of "The Waiting Room" is unlistenable until the instrumental in the last two minutes. The whole album jumps back and forth like this between beautiful and grating for it's entirety. The good moments are only that, moments. Even though I love Peter Gabriel, I found myself wondering if the whole thing would just be better off as an instrumental. The lyrics and delivery make it too convoluted. I get that it's an artsy concept album, but it's too whimsical and strange. It does pique my interest though because I didn't know Genesis was capable of anything but "That's All" and "I Can't Dance."

Pretty good music but overall I wasn't able to follow any of the storyline and themes. I expect this would improve upon repeated listens. As it stands it was mainly just a long progressive rock album. Not bad but didn't do that much for me. I imagine a visual version of this a la Tommy/Quadrophenia would make it more enjoyable experience. 2.21 stars

I tried, I really did. But it’s so long! And I get it. I do! I just didn’t like it.

Flashes of brilliance bogged down by about a tedious extra SEVENTY FIVE MINUTES! 2.4 stars

One of those concept albums that's too much concept and not enough album (give me some choruses, man). But since this is a double album, there's actually too much album, too.

Counting Out Time

Considering how much I liked Peter Gabriel's So in the 80's, this crap bored me to tears. It is like a study on insanity disguised as a rock opera. Did Queen inspire this shite? Or did the 70's just demand a dystopian view of the future and fearful ambiguity of the purpose of all mankind? Fuck, I thought they did happy drugs back then.

Couldn’t get through this garbage. So over produced. Was it an actual play? If so, who wanted to see it? I was hoping for more.

It is so long, I like the story but the music is so fussy my brain can't.

Listened Before: N Interesting. Genesis did a concept album while trying not to break up. I feel like this album could've been really good, but you can feel the tension bleeding through. I don't know what's up with Gabriel's voice here... less production I suppose - It was supposed to sound raw and it does... but not in a good way. I really didn't enjoy this one much. A+ for effort though. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: (Title Track)

Odotoukset taivaissa... Musiikki maanpäällistä.. Homeless man singing wibes..

Lacking any big hook to pull me in. Probably too long. I support giving your music a weird plot but the sound is just not there to me, it all sorta bleeds together

Really not my thing - there is often something a bit off about this 70s UK prog rock

This is too long and sometimes also too weird for me… but I will try to listen to it again because some songs were real gems.

This has no right being as long as it is. It's not objectively bad, even Bowie-esque at points (in a good way), it's just not quite my cup of tea and goes on a bit.

Over the top and overly long

Seichter Art Rock. Schwer durchs ganze Album zu hören.

This is a weird album. Can't say I'm a fan. It's just a bit too bizarre.

2/5. Peter Gabriel Genesis is not my Genesis. #notmygenesis

Theater kid music (derogatory) Very well done for what it is, no doubt, but a tedious chore to actually listen to unless you have a brain full of Sondheim songs.

I found it hard to enjoy anything on this album. Felt very boring, with some good spots here and there but spread way too thin. Not a fan of concept albums.

Just okay. Way too long. It really made bo impression upon me. The story behind it and some of the songs is a bit weird. It would've gotten a 3 but deduct a star for excessive length.

2 - This was just not on my frequency. The first disc was just not enjoyable to listen to until Carpet Crawlers. Second disc was better, but nothing really stood out. There were brief moments I thought it was cool, but overall it felt just a struggle.

Broo-o-oo-way! Lisää tätä, vähemmän pituutta ja hupsuttelua, kiitos. Osaatte kuitenkin säveltää.

Always found Genesis to be dull, and this album solidified that view.

Tried to listen twice, didn't get it and lost focus

I can't get into it. Too rock opera'y for me

Broadway melody is unintentionally hilarious. This whole prog rock thing is not for you genesis. I love invisible touch and later Peter Gabriel.

The rate went down as the album went on, I mean, it’s a try hard effort. Has its (few) moments tho (Also I fucked up and rated a King Crimson album instead of this one 🤦🏽‍♂️)

Unless its Nelly's Sweat/Suit there is never a need for a double album. Too long and probably one of Genesis' lamer attempts.

This album stinks and like basically all double albums… it’s too long

Music was nice but vocals weren't my thing.

Standouts: In The Cage, It. Sounds decent but drags on so long.

I only knew the Genesis albums from 1981, there is a huge difference between this album and the ones from 1981. It's too progressive for me

2 and that's only because Genesis is musically gifted so it's of course well done. But boring. And i don't like prog rock, it is so pretentious & long winded. I'll stick with my 80s Genesis & Oeter Gabriel instead.

Meh. Forgettable and not great. 2/5

I liked some of the songs, but it was all just too much.

It's fine.

I love Genesis, but this not the same iconic 80s/90s Genesis. This was a bit more raw, and even strangely sexual at times.

para entendidos. Y como no lo soy... pues me ha parecido un tostón.

Pretty average. Not too much stood out to me and it was a real chore to get through. There's probably a solid 3 album in there somewhere, but not even halfway through I was ready for it to be over. Kind of a painful listening experience.

slubberdegullion. What did I just listen to?

Wow, I thought I like Genesis. I did not enjoy this album very much. It felt like chaotic noise.

I’m no stranger to listening to long songs, and certainly listen to my fair share of lame and daggy music, but cmon. One and a half. Fave track: Back in NYC

Starts off a bit better than most progrock. Sounds better when it’s just Peter Gabriel singing. It sounds like the soundtrack for a very tedious and heavy handed Broadway show. I’m shocked it hasn’t been become a jukebox musical, yet. It’s very very 70s prog. Like omg, someone smash that keyboard. Definitely not something I will listen to again. This requires a lot of drugs. Frustrating cause every time they get a good bit going, they start throwing in cheesy prog cliche sounds. Album is way, way too long. For early Genesis, it’s okay. But I can’t wait for it to end. Peter Gabriel was smart to leave this band and go solo.

wow - I tried I really did. Love Peter Gabriel solo ("So") but this... once I got past the title cut (the best by far and only hit)... it let me.

I’m more of a post-Gabriel Genesis fan.

Couldn't get though this one. Fine but [shrug]

Normally I’d give something like this a 3 because overall I thought it was weird but fine, but this is too long to be mediocre. Would love to be there when they decided that they were bursting with so much material that they had to make a 90 minute record. Strange mix of prog sand straight experimental.

Even though I am more amenable to prog now than I was as a teen, when I was firmly against anything even remotely connected to the genre, i have never really gotten on with Genesis and this hasn’t shaken that assessment. The musicianship is very good, and the concept is an interesting one, but the songs are not distinctive or engaging enough to sell it.

I think I described this as "testing". Its just a bit much! Turns out my dad loves this album and was surprised about my adverse reaction. Just goes on and on!

Very self indulgent, there were moments of greatness but they were few and far between. Don't know maybe this needs more listens but I just don't think I want to give it more time

a lot of the songs start out strong til peter gabriel comes along and ruins them the lamb lies down on broadway in the cage hairless heart the waiting room

I just can't get into genesis. Not the first time I've tried. 2 stars

Onsamenhangend en rommelig voor mijn gevoel, heb er niet van kunnen genieten

Ninety-fucking-four minutes of prog should be listed as cruel and unusual punishment by the UN. What kind of just world allows this? What kind of psychopath is entertained from start to end by this? No, don’t tell me. I don’t want to know.

It's sort of like if Rush was not really exciting and had less personality. It's probably more generally agreeable but much less special imo.

too long and meandering. Genesis didnt hit its stride until a few albums later with Phil Collins on lead vocals

It's like a medley of extracts from a confusing musical, where they forgot to write a plot. Oh god, I just read the plot on Wikipedia; oh dear; oh no. I'm not into these long form monologue progressive rock tracks. I liked the enthusiastic explanation of, "Erogenous Zones" on Counting Out Time. Did he ever get his penis back from the raven (who was carrying it in a shoobedoobe)?

While I quite like Genesis, this double album is overly long and got bogged down in its own surreal concepts. I liked a few of the tracks, but doubt I'd be re-listening anytime soon.

I love Peter Gabriel solo, but can’t deal with this record. Prog-rock concept record, no thank you. I wouldn’t be surprised if some broadway producer tried to stage this…

I don't like prog rock.

genesis double lp got me like 😴😴😴😴 i dont know about genesis, i like a couple songs from their most famous album but nothing really gets me. its a prog pop kind of thing and i dont like it all that much. yeah ive listened to the first song and there aint no way im listening to the whole thing, i dont care if im losing on something, not doing that. the fucking bridges are the part that throw me off, theyre so angelical and they all sound like the start of a great and epic journey. no man, no. 2.5, in case its actually a good album

If it's going to be a double, it's got to be a very enjoyable double. This was not that.

I listened through Peter Gabriel’s solo output this year & found a lot that I really liked. His work with Genesis here is so different. Strange, because post-Genesis Peter Gabriel can make shorter, catchy songs and post-Peter Gabriel Genesis can make shorter, catchy songs. Just not here.

Long. Not uninteresting. But long. Longer than it is interesting. Nothing stuck and wish it would. Hopefully Alex's write up of it will make me reconsider.

Not as bad as I feared but I'm pretty far from being able to enjoy 90 minutes of it.

Lungo, strano, per me è meh

Album #33 What the hell was that?

Genesis have always baffled me.

There are some genuinely beautiful musical snippets amongst all of the self important over-the-top grandiosity. I love Peter Gabriel's voice and some of the dramatic moments are great. But there's just so much of it. This one truly outstayed its welcome.

Not my bag, but not that bad. Glad I listened to it.

Too long

Pretty sure nobody actually likes Genesis. You tolerate them at best.

I’m already not a huge fan of genesis. This concept album was a lot to sit through.

This is fine. Weirdly sexual in places.

It's probably because this was not the sort of thing I was interested in listening to at the time, but I found this to be annoyingly bloated and pretentious, even for progressive rock. I couldn't really follow the story in the lyrics, so it just went on and on and on for hours. Not one song seemed to stand out from the others. None of it was terrible to listen to, but boredom became annoyance before it was done.

Parts of it are ok, parts are particularly unpleasant. Not for me. Another one for the middle aged white men. Two stars.

Meh...I like Phil Collins

2 Have you ever asked yourself “What if someone made an album in the spirit of Tommy by The Who but dialed the fun and epic factor down by like three notches?” Well, luckily for you, that album exists in the form of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. This isn’t an outright bad album by any means, but the fact that it’s 94 minutes long and never once had a moment I would consider “exciting” has me chalking this one up as a miss. Like, all I could think about afterwards was what better things I could have done in that 94 minutes - you could watch the entirety of Toy Story and still have enough time to run to the bathroom and get snacks. Musically, it’s pretty mid prog rock across the board - no particular highs that stood out to me, but fortunately there weren’t any noticeable lows either. Storywise… I had no idea what the fuck was going on here. I wasn’t sure if the randomly horny track Counting Out Time fit appropriately into the story or not, but it certainly didn’t feel like it while I was listening (it’s no Young Lust). Still, I didn’t want to dock the album for what may have been my own ignorance, so I gave a second listen and tried to keep up with some synopses online. Yes, I listened to this thing twice. Holy cow, this story is the dumbest shit I’ve ever read. I recommend giving the plot summary a read on Wikipedia, but basically, the album follows a Puerto Rican New York gang member named Rael who is randomly warped into a prison-like cave while walking down Broadway. He escapes to find a factory that packages human beings and then runs away from that to find a chamber with 32 doors in it. After guidance from a random blind woman, he goes through a door leading him to a group of seductive creatures known as The Lamia, with whom he has sex with, but it turns him into a hideous creature that is subsequently castrated by The Slippermen. A raven then flies away with his penis, but in chasing after it, he sees his brother drowning in a river and attempts to save him. However, in a plot twist, it actually turns out to be himself he just saved, ultimately resulting in him becoming “It”. What “It” is is supposed to be interpretive to the listener, but frankly, I have no idea what the hell you’re supposed to infer based on whatever the fuck it is I just described. In my head canon he becomes the creature from the Stephen King novel. Once again, not bad musically, but way too mid to be this long, and the story doesn’t make anywhere near a comprehensible amount of sense to be engaging. A 1 feels a little too low, but I don’t see myself re-visiting. Maybe if I ever find myself on the same drugs Peter Gabriel was on when he wrote this.

Génesis definitivamente no es lo mío, se me hace un embole eterno. Es buscar complicarla, por complicarla nomás. Igualmente se tiene en consideración su calidad.

Another double album? It is 94 minutes long. It is entirely unnecessary. It is eccentric but not in a good way. I do not know how people would enjoy this. It is better than a 1 but not really a two. I will round up.

I already have a strong distaste for Phil Collins (love Peter Gabriel, though) and this rambling 70s clusterfuck did nothing to change that distaste for Phil Collins and Genesis.

This is yet another band on the list of those that on paper it seems I'd surely like their music but I don't. I don't actively dislike it; I'm just not interested. I've tried, including this album when it came up in the rotation just now, but, nope, not there for me.

WAYYYYY Too long

J’adore le prog rock, mais maudit que j’ai d’la misère avec Genesis

It's weirdo prog rock Genesis. I don't care for it. The Peter Gabriel era is interesting & I prefer Nursery Crime over this album.

4/25, 16%

There was this one track I listened to, I don’t know, a few hours ago, with Phil Collins on vocals that was pretty good but I couldn’t tell you what or when - this seemed to go on forever. More patience required for this than I am prepared to give but I admire the scope and the self expression.

Wow, I did not expect so much classic 70's hippie from Genesis. I guess I think about Genesis from the 80's more than their roots.

My lord this is loooooonng. It’s a strange album to booth so it needs patience to even tolerate it. At first I completely dismissed it - but there is some interest hidden just below the surface. There isn’t much pop to sink one’s teeth into and when there is - the lyrics are all over the place. But there are interesting and sometimes memorable moments on this record. It could have done with some self editing - or someone should have told them that half this album could have been cut or released as a separate one. So unfortunately this gets a low rating because as an entire record it doesn’t work even though there are interesting bits.

Je moet wel van dit genre houden om van dit album te kunnen genieten. ik vind het niet zo bijster bijzonder

prog is shit

I do not care for Genesis

Einde niet gehaald want ik haat dubbel CDs, maar die 2 hele sterren hebben ze dubbel en dwars verdiend, want ik heb weinig gehoord wat me bijbleef.

Bleegh.

Just not in the mood

Not sure what to make of this, maybe I need to listen to it more?

None of this grabbed my attention, pretty forgettable for me

Not the Genesis I thought i knew from the 80s. This album doesn’t do much for me. Pink Floyd meets musical theater meets sleep depravation. Amazing musicianship for sure though.

Perplexing album to listen to. Some of the songs are extremely slow. Some of the songs are far more upbeat. It feels like a different album maybe halfway through.

This was hard to follow along with. Kazoos and mouth noises, very weird story, and the end of Gabriel in Genesis. Not for me.

Not so much fun as it was in high school.

Just not getting into this early Genesis stuff, isn't for me.

Hmmm... so there have been a lot of albums on here that are dated and feel cheesy because of that, which is forgivable. This is not one of those albums. It feels so forced, trying to be as epic as The Who but with really clunky lyrics. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for it right now, but its just not doing it for me. :/

fuck... 70s prog rock, double disc, concept album... why? None of these songs are even a Genesis hit. They have good songs. Why this album? To be fair, I only made it about 6 songs and switched back to listening to Visigoth. But fuck this shit.

Nada especial

Wow, this really just kept on going.

I don’t like this, is so equal between all songs, the same melody and the same rhythm

This came up and I made the sound Sideshow Bob makes when he steps on the rake(s). Then I made it AGAIN when I realized this is a double album. Terrible album. So tedious.

I'll have what they're having

Rubbish

Not it

Phil Collins desperately needed cocaine in his life or to get rid of the other members of Genesis.

My Dad has always been a big fan of Peter Gabriel era Genesis, for reasons which remain very unclear

This was a tough listen

Hell no.

Unfeasibly worse even than LZ IV…blimey RGP you’re hitting some one star lows this week… “Lenny Bruce declares a truce…” FFS!!!!!!! Having somehow finally got through the full 90 minutes I can confirm it’s a very weird listening experience as there are slightly more than a few interesting moments, which are considerably outweighed by the incredibly low quality of everything else. I know nothing of Genesis but can only assume Collins used a veto… Tom.

Painful

Just doesn't sound like much more than prog rock. I normally like prog rock but it doesn't stand out as an album to me.

Their sixth album. Prog Rock. This kind of double concept, keyboard noodly doodly, flute playing, over complicated, whimsical album is exactly why music needed and got the reset that was Punk. Some Prog on this list so far has been surprisingly enjoyable. This! This is the most self indulgent wank on the list so far and I'm around four hundred albums in.

Prog…………… sorry, dropped off there. It may be because of Phil Collins, but it’s just dull, and to pick this double album of over an hour and a half is just cruel. BTW Phil Collins et al are Charterhouse School alumni, with privilege preference and profit for wrath, who moved to Switzerland to avoid paying his share of tax. Noel Gallagher joked in 2005 to "Vote Labour" to prevent Collins from returning to the UK.

Not keen on prog rock and concept albums. A long listen as a double album which I couldnt understand …a weird story. The sound was weary amd dreary and dragged on. Some of the lyrics were pleasantly poetic.

Hate everything about this.

It says a lot that an album with 17 songs has not one worth listening to twice

This is interesting. It's soo old, but there's some modern sounds there that makes me think it's from 80s. Idk this was super weird to listen to tho

all due respect to Phil and stuff, but what the fuck is this

Amazing. It’s like someone specifically tailored an album to be maximally insufferable to me: “rock opera” compete with wacky characters and scenarios; cheesy lyrics/rhymes; overly theatrical; way, way too long; and just the entirety of whatever “The Grand Parade Of Lifeless Packaging” was. I can respect the originality and the effort this took to make, but man, I hated listening to it. Well, actually, I kind of enjoyed having an album that I completely disliked, since it’s so rare. I'm sure I'm an outlier here, and I'm open to the possibility that I'm completely misjudging it, but at least for today, I'm going with my gut. 1.5

Why does prog rock just take itself way way way too seriously

This hurt me. 97 minutes of wandering bullshit. It’s so important to me that the whole album is listened to, like I think you need to listen all the way through to have an informed opinion on an album even if you don’t like it. This was almost impossible. I hated this. Genesis sure are great musicians and for that they likely deserve a high rating here but oh my god. If I was into prog i could get it, I like rush!!! But truly what a boring album. I’m sure this is someone’s abbey road but not me.

This is dreadful, bloated and a bit too pleased with itself. I’m sure there’s something good in there somewhere but it’s obscured by the pretentiousness.

Not my cup of coffee

This was really not good and then I got to The Colony of Slippermen This is abysmal.

Awful, I can’t listen to Genesis

I went into this with a bias against Genesis and this album has done nothing but deepen that sentiment. The concept is pretentious and the whole album smacks of a group of men who think they’re far more intelligent than they actually are. This album for me is the absolute worst of Prog Rock and the reason it gets such a bad name. Even at their most self indulgent conceptually bands like Pink Floyd and The Who can fall back on the quality of their playing and instrumentation. The same cannot be said for Genesis. None of the band are talented enough musicians to carry the songs should you find yourself fortunate enough to tune out the at times painful lyrics. By the end of this I found myself genuinely irritated by what I was listening to. I defy anybody who thinks I am being harsh to read through the “plot” of this album (which was included in the liner notes at Peter Gabriel’s insistence) without rolling your eyes or audibly laughing at how up itself it is.

Tried listening to this three times, couldn't push it through.

It's long and (to me) boring. There are parts of some songs that are interesting, but then Peter Gabriel starts singing, and it throws me off again.

not my tempo

This album definitely enjoys the smell of its own farts. A few interesting instrumental arrangements aside, it's all pomp and no soul. Not for me

This lasted forever and provided me with nothing.

Terrible. If I could give it zero I would.
