90s MTV og ofnotkun á gylltum filter í tónlistarvídeóum. Það er það sem þessi plata er. Ágætt í bakgrunni.
Didn't make it very far honestly. Not bad, just not my thing.
I don't think I've ever listened to a Mariah Carey album from start to finish. I was curious about this one. I thought it might be a fun pop record. Sadly, its like 80% boring ballads. No thanks.
This album is not for me. There was an audience for this and it clearly launched Mariah's career. She has a great voice and the production value is high. Artistically it really has no merit. It doesn't push the boundaries and is pretty much nothing to me. Even for the era that it was released it didn't really move the needle. It sounds like great end credit music for a Disney movie or a romcom I've never seen. Not sure who I would recommend it too. That being said I am sure that people that like this music would argue it is a classic. Again she has an undeniably good voice, but it could be used for a better purpose.
Girl could sing, for sure.
I'm not really a fan of pop music and hardly a fan of Mariah Carey. Still, this wasn't as agonizing as I expected it to be. Saved tracks: Honey, My All, The Roof (Back In Time)
Cover of Prince's The Beautiful Ones best memory of this album. Listened to the 25th Anniversary Edition.
Mejor de lo que esperaba. Soportable.
KESKIVERTOINEN albumi ei millään tavalla merkkityksellinen,,,, A alabumin nimikko biisi butterfly paras...
It was so strange hearing Shook Ones (Part II) and Tha Crossroads samples on a Mariah Carey album. 3/5
Vocals do shine on this one. “Mariah Carey has a great voice” is like, one of the least controversial opinions a 90’s kid like me could have. Some reviews I saw were claiming a lot of her vocals were “showing off”, which is a criticism I find as idiotic as when people criticize bands like Rush for “showing off” their instrumental prowess. Great love songs with more instrumental diversity than I expected, with piano, guitar, Latin percussion, trap beats, and more sprinkled around to create the soundscapes. All that said, the fact that most of these are fundamentally low tempo R&B love songs does mean that they fade together a bit after a while. The first few songs are great, but after that it gets old. A heavily frontloaded album, but that front load is good enough to give this a decent rating. Top Tracks: - Honey – Nice dance track. - Butterfly – Solid anthemic track. - My All – High tier love ballad with a little bit of Latin influence. - The Roof (Back in Time) – Great sensual song.
okay.
It shames me to like this. Beyond a select few hits, I hated the predominance of R&B in the 90s pop charts, most of which were super generic and too focused on highlighting the singer's voice than anything. Maybe Mariah invented the trend. But either way, this is almost an exception, or at least the very least when you put effort into making a decent album out of it. The production is fantastic, with interesting arrangements taking influence from hip hop, jazz, and downtempo, both atmospheric and chill, with smooth transitions between tracks that make the whole album consistent despite the varying styles. I love the multi-tracking vocals, allowing the compositions to be colorful and full of life. However, I think it takes a sharp turn into the R&B realm of the generic, uninspired, and lame following "Breakdown." Production is still great, but not interesting enough to maintain my attention, especially with the tiresome overused tricks. My favorite songs were the disco tracks like "Honey" and "Fly Away", and I wish they expanded on that more. But I can see the merit in the well-made ballads "Butterfly" and "My All." In the end, the only track to be taken seriously is "Honey". Favorites: Honey, The Roof, Fourth of July, Breakdown, Fly Away
Meh
An excellent album if not out of step with most of everything on this list.
This was actually pretty good. Not something I'd typically listen to, but enjoyable nonetheless. I would listen to it again!
Her involvement with the songs is something that I respect, and I definitely underestimated her singing abilities, but the songs themselves are just a bit lacklustre for me, nothing exciting or memorable.
Mariah has a good voice but even though this song was a departure from her usual pop towards more R&B the album was just kinda boring. A whole hour of slow ballads that all sound the same is just not that entertaining
Geez - I totally forgot how tiresome R&B tracks had become by the late 90s. Slow jam after slow jam with synthesized everything accompanied by little more than a fretless bass guitar. FKA Twigs this is not! While still largely constrained to the formula above, I would point to the track 'Breakdown' as a pleasant break out (at least in meter) from the well-worn guardrails that the rest of the album feels tied down by. Above the tracks Mariah's vocals are flawless and float back and forth between smokey seduction and belting power. I'd point to 'My All' and 'Close My Eyes' as being the stars of the album in particular.
Of course Mariah Carey has a good voice. The production seems a bit dated though and some of the songs read as very shallow (esp that one about growing up too soon) Overall it’s not an unpleasant experience, it could just be so much more
I wasn't relishing listening to this album much, but it was more pleasant than I anticipated. That said, it did conform to my preconceptions: silky smooth R&B underlying Mariah's unique voice. Wouldn't listen again, but don't feel that my ears have been violated.
Ik vroeg me al af waar dit soort albums bleven in deze lijst. Hoewel ik er op voorhand een beetje tegenop zag, kon ik het voor een keer best goed hebben.
Vocal powerhouse
This gave me a chance to spend some time with Mariah Carey, as generally in the past I had avoided her. I was not previously familiar with any of the songs here, even though they seemed to have been popular. "Honey" isn't the sort of song I would normally pick to listen to, but I found it a somewhat interesting and engaging piece, especially the second time through. Then, there was the rest of the hour of warbling slow jam adult contemporary (maybe best exemplified by "Fourth of July") with a soupçon of hip hop (see "Breakdown"). This very, very extended smooth mood seemed only to be broken by the dancey anthem "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" which did inspire me to raise my arms and strut along a bit before going back to the boudoir. I might just feel a little more appreciative of her work, although it's not likely I'll be back. I have, however, filed "Fly Away" for inspiration emergencies.
I did not love this album. I found it a bit boring. It got me thinking that maybe I don’t care for r&b slow jams…but that’s not right…this particular album just didn’t hit in the right spot for me today.
I like my divas a little rougher than this. Mariah Carey is a remarkable singer and I appreciate why this is a popular album. There are some songs that I warmed up to more than I thought I would after several listens. The vocals flit around like… butterflies. There were times I was a bit bored and grew weary of some of the vocals. I think I like Mariah’s pop phase more than this move towards R&B. Still, this is a polished presentation of Mariah Carey’s formidable vocal skills.
I've only listened to Caution which is one of my favorite albums from Mariah Carey, so it was nice to check out some of her older material. While I'm not super into her slow ballad pop cuts on here, it's balanced with the hip-hop influenced bangers and R&B burners. It's a very decent album although it wears its era on its sleeve.
I wanted to enjoy this more than I did but yeah, all the songs are just a bit samey, and there's just a lot of vocal layers that are kind of buried in the mix and add nothing. When Mariah actually has a strong vocal line to sing, she sounds incredible, it's just a shame that a lot of the album is so washy
Nije loš album al mi i nije toliko wau.
Pod dobre stvari stavljam u potpunosti slijedeće - Honey, The Roof (Back in Time), Breakdown i Close My Eyes.
Bom.
Not bad for a pop starlet. But really a 1001? (5/10) FT: My All
I actually liked the majority of it. Not every song, but a lot of them I can see why it was a hit, it's quality. Phenomenal vocal control she's got It makes me nostalgic, they don't make music like this anymore.
Some good tracks but a bit meh especially for like the best 1001 albums of all time
Nice enough but not really my bag.
Was actually a bit surprised by this album. Had never listened to it and it was better then i thought.
Very much not my thing, but made for nice background music while I worked.
I find this style of smooth RnB a little monotonous, the best parts of the album for me were when the formula got shaken up a little bit, like on "Breakdown". Everything else was just fine, but it just isn't impactful or bold enough to catch my attention, just kinda slides off me. Mariah is a great singer, though.
3 i guess. not my jam and I did seriously consider a 2, but her vocal skills kept it at a 3.
6/10 great vocal performance of course, but as an album it got a bit boring
5/10. Sorry Mariah Carey, you are doomed to be remembered only for your Christmas music.
About what I expected. 5/10
too sugary for my liking yet her voice is beautiful
Not my cup of tea but she is very good at singing
Fik ikke lige hørt det helt færdigt, men det gør jeg i dag.
Honey had me seriously turned off, then Butterfly went and turned things around. That said, this isn't normally to my taste.
I'm sure there are reasons why other people love this album, I just don't see them personally.
Probably not my favorite Pop album- but they've been so rare on this list that it was quite refreshing
boring songs but amazing vocals
Raspy, breathy, kind of seductive. Nice beats, but not something I’d play on the regular.
Brings me back to being a kid for sure. Butterflys have a lot of symbolism in my life. So it gets a quite a bit of points on that end. I am not the biggest R&B fan so, I feel like maybe my rating should be taken with a grain of salt. But man, is there a lot of Just AAaahhh or OOOooOOooooOOOss lol.
First time listening: 8/12 songs liked I much prefer anything upbeat by Mariah Carey: the airy tone she provides becomes TOO airy the slower the song is. Not that disliked the songs on this album, I just like her fast-paced songs more. That said, r&b classic. 2 songs saved
At first I did not enjoy it because it was way too smooth for my taste, but as it went on I settled on the sound and started to sort of enjoy it. I had no idea which song I was on though because they all sound very similar to me.
Sensual, feminine, soothing, pretty. Mariah's luscious vocals are on full display. Gorgeous production. Songs mostly address bedroom tenderness, reminiscences, relationships. Overall, this one wraps like a soft embrace. Doesn't speak to me personally but I can appreciate an album well realized.
She does have an incredible voice, and I can certainly see how she influenced pop music at the time. Not really my style, though.
was never one of my favorite Mariah Carey albums but it was good
great album cool pop vibes
Not really my type of thing, but Honey has a cool squelchy bass line. I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.
Luurangot kaapissa vol x: Tykkään Mariah Careyn slovareista. Tällä levyllä niitä on harmillisen vähän ja R&B-kökköilu on suuremmassa roolissa. Ei siis ihan täyskymppi mutta tukeva kolmonen.
Would rate this a 3.5. Not my usual, but it's an interesting mixture of rap and smooth pop.
Very 90s, not bad.
For adult contemporary, this album exists! It’s not my genre. Matter of fact, I kinda’ got bored with this album about three songs in. The album is a vessel for Carey’s exceptional vocal range. After a while, though, I felt the vocal fluctuations, vocal whistles and nasal head voice singing got redundant, and paired with the lacking musical variation and lyrical prose of a thirteen year-old on most songs, this album just falls flat for me. If I was still in my player days (…imaginary, admittedly) I would have played this album as background music because it was smooth and I hopefully wouldn’t have to pay that close of attention to it. Otherwise, this is a one-and-done.
Not for me thank you...
While they were negotiating the contract for this album do you think the haggled other the inclusion of “the note” needlessly in almost every song? They’re like “5 million and 60% of the songs have the note.” She’s like, “give me 10 million and I’ll do it all the fucking time!” In my fantasy MC drives a hard bargain and usually gets what she wants. Sometimes you’ll hear “the note” just whispering through the background of some song, unrelated to anything else that’s going on. One time I thought there was some horribly errant caterwaul ensuing in the middle distance only to realize it was just another yoddley (sic) application of “the note” and its near relatives. In the end nothing remarkable except maybe the galling modernity of the title track’s ode to open marriage. Wink. I know that’s not what she’d say it’s about but it’s fun to imagine while you listen to it. More fun than whatever appalling banality she’s actually screaming about at any rate.
Mariah-lovely voice but felt like a dated moment.
Decent album to listen to overall. Peaks a little early and has an fine if unremarkable second half. Did not need to push an hour in runtime. Top tracks: Honey, The Roof (Back in Time)
This sound is a bit boring to me. It sounds pretty monotone all the way through. 2-3 star vibes so far. I like the song breakdown a lot! And Roof is alright. The lyricism on this album is pretty good, but without her phenomenal vocals this album would evaporate entirely.
Det er catchy, flot produceret og så har Mariah Carey en stemme som få andre. Men det siger mig ikke ret meget.
She has a great voice. This is really not for me. I kinda liked Whenever You Call and some of the more traditional pop songs.
i thought it got off to a strong start. some great singing, but also every song is a little too long and kind of sounds the same. favorite song is Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise) shit's like a little DLC dance track. also gotta love a prince cover
Oh hello Mariah. Uhmmm. Let’s see what happens… at least it’s the only one… Um… this one’s actually hard. Mariah has a beautiful voice, no doubt. But… man this is uneven. Does it want to be RnB? Because if it does, it makes some very poor late 90’s choices in production. Her duet with Dru Hill is very strong, but on other tracks that I guess are trying to be more “hip-hop,” boy is it baaad. Cringy bad. At those moments I just want her Christmas album. And really, Mariah on a good day is selling a So Cal lifestyle that I never embraced/ never wanted. So… 2 Btw - I have been informed that I have not been properly using the Boolean. It should be true or false, not yes or no. I say: same difference. My husband says: no, precision matters. So… Boolean for Butterfly: FALSE- there was no need for me to have heard this before I die. I would much rather hear Mariah’s Christmas album
Heh
Wow that's got to be some kind of record for number of vocal notes in one album. And after 55 minutes of it, I can't recall a single melody. Never too annoying, but not sure what type of life situation I would be in where I would want to go through this 55-minute journey again. 2.4 stars.
Why sing one note when many note do trick? Top tip, Mary - they don’t. This is shit.
First time listening to a Mariah album in full. 90s R&B is just not my thing at all. The music sounds nearly identical on all the songs and the biggest selling point seems to be the vocals. But the thing is, I don't really care about impressive vocals. Mariah could hit whistle notes for 3 minutes straight and I just wouldn't care. Is it a well produced, well performed album? Sure. But it's just not for me 2/5
2/5
Mimimiiiii!! Butterfly var jo helt jævig
The album is fine, I just don't really care for the genre. Mariah Carey has a great voice but I don't even really think she's singing on this album.
(33/100)
what a voice to be wasted on such snore music. just because she can exercise vocal ranges for fun, doesn't mean the music is good
Not super my thing but fairly pleasant
You see, I’m not opposed to the theoretical concept of Mariah. In fact early 1990 Mariah is pretty good. She was a kid who sounded like a fully grown adult. Ironically, on an album called Butterfly, we have an exercise in regression where she’s a fully grown adult trying to sound like a kid with this wispy voice and toddler like cooing. As a listener we’re begging for her to belt one out Vision of Love style, just like we all know she can. Instead Mariah retreats to her safe space, which is dozens of glissandos for no apparent reason whatsoever. The lyrics are bad too, a grab bag of rhyming platitudes. Except for one flash of truth telling midway through the album: “Still I feel like that child as I look at the moon. Maybe I grew up a little too soon.” A great voice wasted for 56 minutes.
Didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. Still its basically the same song over and over again
So 90’s it hurts
90’s R&B
I feel like if I knew less about Mariah the diva I could appreciate Mariah the diva a but more. Take away my queer card but this was very "eh" for me
This seems to be more a demonstration of singing ability than songwriting. The opening track Honey quickly dissolves into a series of "mmhmmm"s and "hoooeeeee"s, and every other track is identical. I see from the notes that this was heavily produced. Well, it doesn't show. Lay down a lid-tempo backbeat from Garage Band, add in some twinkly synths and hi-hat sounds, done. Why is this manufactured plastic on the list? Like another review says, this is like listening to an hour of music used in the credits for a low-budget straight-to-VHS Disney animation from the late 90s. I was originally going to give this one star, but then about halfway through I realised I had tuned it out completely, like traffic noise. Lacking the energy to even rouse negative emotions, I hereby award Mariah Carey's Butterfly two stars.
Я б поставила б 2,5. У неї класний голос, але самі пісні нудні та однотипні, до того ж мають аж занадто попсове звучання
I doubt I'll ever listen to this again. Noting the immense impact MC has had, it's simply not my preference. Way too much 'oooo-oooo-ooo's' and generic backing tracks for my taste.
She - and this is news to you all I'm sure - is a very talented singer. She also - and this may shock you - uses that talent far too much far too often. It's very off-putting. Beyond that, it's yer basic non-interesting but not horrible pop.
Sorry Mariah, mostöy background music. Some nice 90s beats
Not for me
At first, I was thinking that since I do like some individual moments on this album, but didn't necessarily need a whole hour at once, I'd rate it 3 stars. But then I realized I was only halfway through, not 40 or 45 minutes through as I'd thought. So in light of REALLY not needing the hour, down to 2 stars it goes.
I made it entirely too far into this album before realizing that every song sounded the same. Listen, she can obviously sing. But I don’t need a bunch of overall mediocre tracks where she showcases how many notes she can hit in a single word like 50 times every song.
bland
Interminable. One great song and otherwise mid 90s r and b. If you've heard one you've heard them all.
Not her best. Dated terribly now. Music box is better. 2
I can hang with a Mariah Carey album (Daydream is one of the genre's giants), but this one just felt aimless. I couldn't find the melodies in the endless runs and all of the time spent in the whistle register. She spends at least 75% of this one whispering and moaning. It's all vibes and nothing to hold onto. Look no further than her cover of "The Beautiful Ones". If you weren't already familiar with the Prince masterpiece, could you make out the hook?
Oof. Just boring 90s pop. Nothing else to it.
Mostly blows
Was Fourth of July Mariah Carey's attempt at All I Want For Christmas Is You II?
This is ok, Mariah is very talented but most of this doesn’t hit for me
The Good: We are in el oh ve ee!!! The Bad: Not that kind of butterfly.. The Ugly: Knowing how it all ends… Mariah Carey is on the list… understandably, because, in the ‘90s, though we had some great rock based music, it was also the decade that R&B started spitting out one too many artists… Mariah being one of them. You can’t argue that she has a bad voice. She can do things with her vocal chords that view singers can repeat—five octaves… I don’t even know what an octave is! She’s sold 200 million records… geezus Every Christmas millions, tens of millions, maybe even hundreds of millions of people will hear her “All I Want For Christmas” and get all cheery as, well, duh, Christmas is near! Yet, with all those acolytes, this poor woman is only able of garnering a 2.45 rating… Either we are all wrong about the grandness of this album, or, more likely, Mr Dimery, again, managed to throw us a curve ball… At least he could have included the All You Want For Xmas song… 2* because she did what she did
I fell asleep
Has anything in music aged worse than Diddy’s creepy whispers over the songs he produced? Honey is a banger but the soft “I like that”s in the background kind of ruin it for me. The only other song I liked was the one with Dru Hill that kinda sounded like Prince. Mariah is talented (and so goddamn hot) but most of her music doesn’t do anything for me at all.
Angelic voice, mid songs Fave track: Fly Away (Butterfly Reprisal)
Nothing of particular interest happening here. Shook Ones Pt.2 sample was wack as, did not work at all. 2/5
90s pop happiness
Listening session: april 4th, while buying groceries and eating lunch Listened to before: heard a few songs before Thoughts: Mariah Carey is obviously a great singer but these songs are really mediocre and some of them are way over the top Favourite track: My All
I liked The Roof and Fly Away and was quite impressed by Breakdown, but I find it hard to stomach too much of the frillery
Nothing here really grabbed me
Honestly kinda dull
There are a few good singles on this record but hardly enough decent songs for a coherent and satisfying album. Despite it being largely ballads, Mariah overpowers the material, consistently performing at the intensity and volume of a fire engine. Very little storytelling and zero subtlety.
Very smooth, very bland not really my thing. Good enough but won’t listen again. Inoffensive.
I have never really listened to much Mariah. But now I understand where every mediocre aspiring female vocalist on The Voice got her inspiration. Even when Maria does those vocal things, I mostly don't care for it. That said, she has fantastic moments--the opening to My All is gorgeous, if kinda marred by weird percussion choices alas. I would give this 1 star except I think I gave 50 2 stars and this is better than 50.
A shade of pop that still means nothing to me. 😢
Other than her piercing vocals and a good song about being on a rooftop, this sounds like everything else that sounds like this. Stereotypical baby making music.
She IS pretty, and has a good voice. I just can't sit here and listen to a whole album. I'm 6 songs into it, and they all start to sound the same. I'm not going to finish this one.
Innovative. Really made way for my era of hip hop and r&b. I didn't like it but I appreciate it!
Gotta give credit where credit is due: she is equally skilled at both singing AND boring the hell out of me.
3/10 - she has a great voice but it’s a really boring album.
There are a couple of pretty good songs on here and it's cool that she samples Mobb Deep. That being said, some of the songs run together and it's a pretty tame record. 5/10
Have read many reviews along the lines of it being the same song for nearly an hour, how Mariah Carey essentially "moans scales" and how the songs are pretty dull. I agree with all of them. She has a fantastic voice but the music should be more than a vehicle for showing it off
Cant wait for Christmas
All listen to my techniques. Lots of vocal “look” at me, moans and leaps, that at no point seem there to serve the song only to serve the image of the diva. Sure she can sing, but nothing becomes a memorable song. All syrupy non song after song. Tedious ballad repeated something like 12 times, awful 2 Star.
All acrobatics and vocal gymnastics, Carey is the Nadia Comăneci of song. It's impressive from the point of view of what one voice can do, but did no-one think to say, "Mariah, just sing the tune."? Her singing style gave rise to a whole generation of women who gave us their melismatic performances on TV Talent shows, not being able to sing "Knees Up Mother Brown" without ripping up and down scales and arpeggios and showing all five octaves of their range in a single bar. She may consider this her Magnum Opus, but the moment I turned it off I had forgotten it. It's icecream music - enjoyable at the time, but not really solid fare that sticks to your ribs.
This album can't decide what it wants to be, and all I've discovered is what I don't want it to be.
She gets a dollar every time she does a scale
Maybe it was ground breaking at the time but after 20+ years of Rhiannas and Beyonce's it can't seem to hold its own
3/10
My first true pop album of this list! I only really know Mariah from… that song… so I guess it’s time to defrost her at the end of February. Only half a track in and this album is reminding me why I don’t generally listen to pop. Honey was an assault to the ears. I couldn’t get any of the lyrics, and the melodies were just not interesting to me. Some of the vocals reminded me of Ariana Grande, but with none of what makes Ariana good. I griped the other day about tracks needing to deserve a 5 minute+ runtime, and this did not deserve that. I had hope that maybe the title track would get better, but it was honestly the worst thing a song can be. Boring. At least it made me bob my head a little bit though. It wasn’t quite as vapid as its predecessor. It is just making me want to queue other much better songs with the same name and/or premise. The “breakdown” if I can call it that at the end of the track was… alright. It at least made it more interesting near the end. It’s unfortunate there’s still a minute left in the song. My All had some decent guitar in the background. That’s the best thing I can say about it, I hate the overuse of vocal runs. Like she has a good voice, I just don’t like it. Oh my. Finally something with a beat with The Roof. This is the closest to enjoyment I’ve came so far with this album. Fourth of July was about as explosive as a wet piece of cotton. I didn’t expect much and was still disappointed. I couldn’t really hear the features in Breakdown except for a bit in the backing vocals. Oh well, I wouldn’t want to be featured on this track either. I hated Babydoll. Close my eyes was the only track I didn’t feel was too overblown. It had a sweetness to it, and I thought it was actually pretty alright. Whenever you call wasn’t too bad either. Same with Fly Away honestly. Even though I didn’t like the initial “Butterfly” track, the reprise was fine. The Beautiful Ones was back to being painful. The feature was alright, but overall I didn’t like it. The closer was just about as boring as the rest of the album. 2/5 ⭐️ because there were a couple I didn’t hate. 58/1089
Great voice combined with uncreative, monotonous songs, with two exceptions. Also her constant scale runs and „ooooh” „aaaah” are getting boring after few minutes, these techniques should enrich songs not be a foundation of them.
ui ich bin nie en riese fan gsi. sie macht afoch vocal runs eigentli. butterfly isch en decent song aber bruuuudi isches übertriebe. d production, d azahl wiederholige oooh mein gott. the roof brucht es sample woni keeeennn. no cool de beat aber find echt wie sie singt uuuhuere streng zum zuelose. fourth of july het irgendwie öpis aber es isch alles soooo schnulzig oooh mein gott. bin bi breakdown und finds insaaaane langwilig. sorry mariah. close my eyes isch au en easy song woni afoch wüürkli nöd so spannend find. fuck han ich es problem mit ihre? well the beautiful ones hani huere gern und es isch basically afoch prince. aso s isch au vo ihm gschriebe und s het die snare und so. findi seeehr geil. de rest vom album findi etz würkli seehr streng. outside findi wieder seeehr streng, ihri runs sind impressive aber ich cha nüüüt drususe zieh. d melodie sind nöd klar amel? zwei. au wenns ihres "magnum opus" isch. meh so es magnümm opus.
Nah.
Not my cup of tea but good voice
Overall: 4/10 I may not have enjoyed this very much, but I can't deny the power of Mariah's incredible voice. The problem is the songs themselves, which range from boring to cringe inducing. To make things worse, P Diddy was involved. Ew. Fav Song: Fourth of July
This rating isn't some music hipster diss of Mariah Carey, who I think is a genuine talent. I just suspect that she has other albums I would like more, since neither of the big singles here are my favs and most of the rest failed to leave an inpression.
Honestly, I may have had higher hopes than I should have going into this. I liked the warm, nostalgic throwback to cozy smooth jazz winters in the 90s at my parents' house, but really this album didn't do much more while it was on. Not to mention that Prince cover was absolutely atrocious. Sorry Mariah, I'm going to stick with your xmas work. 2.4/5 -> 2/5
My guess is that Fantasy is also somewhere on this list and that is kind of the one I wanted to listen to. Robert Dimery seemed to value vocals over everything because that is what is going on here. Mariah Carey is the singer equivalent of the 80's guitar shredder. Proficiently hitting all of the millions of notes they want to and each song is a showcase of their skills. It often comes at the expense of my listening enjoyment. All of these backing tracks are cardboard bland, I imagine it's so-as not to compete with the vocals in the mix. This is the kind of music that would be getting played for the 25 minutes before a movie in when you're in the auditorium with your food waiting for the movie to start and there's local ads and trivia going by.
Meh album, nothing piqued my interest here.
Very 1997. Probably loved it in middle school but not today.
Alternate titles: Bored 2 Death, Not 4 Me. Yes I would rather listen to Spatula or whatever.
She can sing well but the songs were terrible. Just stick to Christmas.
She has some hits, but this offering just seems a little one note. Is Whisp a note?
Pretty much what I expected. A great voice mixed with some exceptionally cheesy 90s production. And having to listen to Mariah for an hour in any situation can be a challenge. Interestingly one of the more standout tracks is the cover of Prince’s The Beautiful Ones.
Expected more here. Mariah obviously has legit chops, but not sure they’re really flexed on this outside of a couple moments.
Not my thing at all. A great vocal talent using it for crap music
I have never been a Mariah Carey fan. That’s okay she certainly has many, many others. She has a wonderful voice, it is just the style of music she makes is not to my tastes.
Ooft. OK, the lassie can definitely sing but this isn't my bag at all. 90s digital cornball productions, caterwauling histrionics, pale imitations of Prince tracks; you name, it's a kitchen-sink maximalist hot mess.
che piaga madonna mi sono rotta alla seconda canzone, quella famosa ci sta e l’upbeat di fly away nella seconda parte anche, poi ovviamente lei bravissima però amo sei noiosa
I can understand the appeal, but I personally didn't love it. My favourite track was "Honey"
So booooring
Didn’t I get enough of her during Christmas time?
Listening to this I really can’t understand why 90s R ‘n B is looked back at with such nostalgia. She’s got an incredible voice, yes, but the songs are just so anaemic. “Fly Away” is the only one I didn’t have to fight the urge to skip, and I’m going to have a look to see if there are any dance floor remixes of it around.
A definitive r+b 90s moment. But not her strongest album
R&B and love songs like this is not my style, but I can appreciate the incredible voice and quality of sound. I don't think I will listen to this album again at all but I have saved 1 or 2 songs. The album gets a little tiring and the songs kind of melded together for me.
Not great. Every song sounds the same.
While I admire Mariah Carey’s stunning vocal ability and generally enjoy great Pop music, I find myself less drawn to modern, R&B-leaning Pop. "Butterfly" features undeniably lush production, but I feel that even a voice this gifted cannot save uninspired material. At times, Carey falls into the trap of 'over-singing', using excessive vocal runs and belts to compensate for the lack of a strong hook. The track list is dominated by slow-to-mid-tempo songs that lack an uplifting energy, resulting in a listening experience that feels somewhat dull. It lacks soul. "Butterfly" just doesn't excite or interest me in any way, and simply put this album isn't for me. Two stars. 1 "Honey" (1/5) 2 "Butterfly" (1/5) 3 "My All" (1/5) 4 "The Roof (Back in Time)" (2/5) 5 "Fourth of July" (1/5) 6 "Breakdown" (featuring Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone) (1/5) 7 "Babydoll" (2/5) 8 "Close My Eyes" (3/5) 9 "Whenever You Call" (2/5) 10 "Fly Away" (Butterfly Reprise) (3/5) 11 "The Beautiful Ones" (Prince cover) (featuring Dru Hill) (3/5) 12 "Outside" (1/5) Total - 21 Average - 1.75 215/1001 121/215 albums reviewed were new to me.
Mariah is a great singer, but this isn't really my kind of music. This album was everywhere when it came out.
Why are you reading reviews? I mean, it’s Mariah Carey, you already know if you’re gonna like it or not.
Imagine having the raw vocal talent of Mariah Carey and using it to make music this vapid. Extra star for Bone Thugs.
07/01/2026 Can't really say I was a fan. It was kind of whiney. Spotify listeners: 93.7 million
I enjoy balladeer Mariah more than R&B jam Mariah. There were a couple songs I really liked and Mariah always sounds amazing. But, I probably won’t revisit this one any time soon.
I think there's nothing special here, a standard and uninteresting 90s R&B record.
Honey!
Late 90s early 2000esque white girl pop music. Unarguably fantastic smoith voice, nice hip-hop elements.
Szeptanie śpiewanie
Logically, there’s little argument about Mariah in her prime. This is fantastic for what it is. Not really my thing, but well crafted.
Did I have to get her two days after Christmas? That makes her my most heard artist of December and it's not consensual. Honestly, girl can sing, but these songs are all boring as all hell. She's upbeat at Christmas and she should try that more often. This is what I call karaoke music, where the backing track sounds like it could be by any female singer of the 80s and 90s. Meh.
Diva slop
Mariah can sing and yet the music is incredibly boring and repetitive. This was a really forgettable album but doesn’t take away from Mariah’s singing ability.
Honestly kind of frustrating because I want it to go somewhere it never does
Another artist that is better served with a greatest hits collection as opposed to an album. Just samey sounding cheesy ballads abound. The Prince cover is awful. Also, she was getting to the point where she was just doing too much of the whisper singing.
This is an example of the flip side of nostalgia. I definitely remember when Mariah Carey was a big deal. I don't remember any of these songs in particular and yet it still felt very 1997. I didn't like it then and I don't like it much now but I don't think it's objectively bad. So it's like a 2.5 but I'm going to give it a 2.
Too much flair and embellishments for me in the singing. And pretty boring as well. She is an incredible singer with a wild octave range. sort of a human piano or flute, but it just doesn't move me.
Pop, soul, hip-hop mixed, and to the detriment of each. Great voice, but it is as if the producers wanted to have songs that highlight her greatvoicedness, not songs as songs.
I guess it’s fun to have something pop-py on the list, but I’ve never found the trilling thrilling. Boring AF.
Agitated. It's her style of singing. I'm profoundly uneasy listening to this. Maybe if she sang 25% of the notes and didn't include the three additional vocal vamp tracks in the background, MAYBE I could get through more than three songs. As it is... I cannot.
I know everyone says she's a great singer, but I've never once been moved by a Mariah Carey performance.
never understood the whole diva classification. too trite
Hate R&B, but this has a couple good songs.
Zuhause, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Was ein Müll…
Kind of a hard one - supreme talent and something I'd basically never want to listen to. Add to that, very vanilla songs in general. Huge hits on the radio everywhere in '97? Absolutely. But the full album really sucks the life out of me.
Too much nonsensical moaning in the music. If you don't believe me, try listening to The Roof (Back In Time).
kinda interesting just not my type of music, she has a great voice
Mariah Carey doesn’t do much for me because it is sappy and not very memorable, but I suppose this album had some hints of late 90s nostalgia.
2.1 nothing interesting and she butchered prince
Good voice, but this was boring. 2/5
I enjoyed this more than I expected, not knowing any of the songs going in. She's a very talented singer, but this just isn't really my thing - particularly the more soppy ballads. I generally hate excessive vocal runs, Christina Aguilera is always at that too. Some decent songs, particularly Honey, The Roof, Breakdown, and the Prince cover. The rest would nearly put me to sleep!
I assumed I would have heard some of these songs before, but I haven't. Definitely not what I was listening to in 1997. Giving it a chance. Songs are so long...90's r&b vibe, inane lyrics - butterflys and spreading wings, etc., inoffensive. Not for me. 2 Heard before? No Owned: No: 30/120 (25%) Will I get? No
I was feeling pretty generous today, but still can't quite give this a 3. Melisma is just not for me.
2.5 57:20 (12 tracks standard format, 6th album, 1997) R&B (technically - more hip-hop pop but this is probably why it's a 'must listen') Fair amount of Sean Combs influence taints the legacy but . . . then again does it? Overall each track is pleasant, some a bit too long The Beautiful Ones (a Prince cover that adds nothing) is far too long and should have been dropped for something else. Collectively the album is boring, slow and benign; however, a pleasant shift away from the pop and long frills she was known for to a more pure R&B sound. I'm glad I did listen to it - a side of Mariah I forgot or undervalued. It's not a terrible album, I enjoyed it more than I thought and struggled with rating 3 vs. a 2 but in the end decided I really don't want to revisit this album and, in fact, took a 'break' in between to listen to ANYTHING ELSE (which I never do) but the back half of the album just gets so boring (first 4-5 tracks aren't bad) so. . . 2. Though there is nothing 'wrong' with this album, if on a long road trip and someone really wanted to play it I wouldn't object.
Is Fantasy on this? :) its not :(
Same ol shit
is very much mid 90's radio music. "Honey" is ok because of how nostalgic it feels, but rest of album is forgettable.
Rescued from its warbly over production a little towards the end - the Prince cover passes muster and I thought the Morales mix of Butterfly/Fly Away was great.
4.5
Soft core porn for people who were were embarrassed to rent it back in the day, but secretly loved it.
Her otherworldly, super strong voice and whistle notes are absolutely impressive. The songwriting and schmaltzy feel are not for me. The bone thugs-n-harmony collaboration was a nice addition.
Pretty boring album. I liked the cover of The Beautiful Ones but mostly just because I like that song. This list could just use more Prince in general
She can sing, clearly. I just didnt like many of the songs. Not terrible but also for me unnecessary 2.5....
Classic
Rich Harmonies and generously backed vocals make this syrupy sweet overproduced pop
..
I enjoyed like 1 and a half song
Shook ones pt ii jumpscare
The album was not so terrible as I expected. Mariah Carey is certainly a good singer and what I like are the soul-like songs. But too many of them are simply bad pop-music.
She can definitely sing but I don’t care much for her as a person and her music isn’t anything I would ever choose to listen to so here we are.
Ugh, so monotonous. Giving it a 2/5 only because her voice is undeniably great.
4/10
It’s fine
This is everything that epitomises 1990s R&B. It’s so polished you could see your face in it, and very slickly produced, and it has a smooth caramel sound. In fact, the sound of the music is the colour of the cover. It’s boring in that there no edge at all to the music, and it’s full of Mariah’s melisma. I don’t like it, make it stop!
I have a soft spot for this era, but there’s better stuff. Needed more Krayzie and Wish Bone.
A few top-tier bangers surrounded by a bunch of boring, forgettable ballads. (2.5)
Итс окэй. Звучит лучше, если не воспринимать, о чем она поет. Лучшая песня - My All.
A time capsule from the 90s. The opening song credits both the Ummnah and Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs as producers. Mariah’s Prince cover (supported by Dru Hill) is surprisingly adequate. Don’t open a 90s time capsule if you ever come across one. There’s too much that needs to be explained.
No thanks. I guess I just hate “pop” music.
The only Mariah Carey song I could name is "All I Want for Christmas is You" and after listening to this album I still can't name any other song. It unintrusive background music I'd expect to hear while shopping at Kohls.
End credit music from a movie released in the nineties type beat.
Listenable but boring.
It's pretty much what I expected. Great vocals, of course, with standard pop beats. A few hit songs that you have probably heard with the others being kind of standard late 90's pop. It's kind of nostalgic listening to this just because the late 90's were pretty awesome. Not sure if I need to listen to it again anytime soon though.
it just feels like super over-produced r&b album. no denying that Mariah Carey is talented AF, but this album just doesnt do it for me. not sure if i would really come back to this ever. again, no denying the talent of Mariah... but i fail to see why this album would be on a top 1001 list. like... was this really influential for the genre. perhaps its my ignorance, but i dont see it.
Rather than an empowering statement, Butterfly plays like an indulgent diary entry that the world didn’t need to read.
i sometimes like mariah carey but in much smaller doses than this. way too long and repetitive. this just isn't my genre
Meh.
les chansons sonnent toutes pareil. j’aime pas
Whats Urban Adult?
I’m real glad vocal runs seem less fashionable these days
Huh. I guess I really don't like R&B. I'd never listened to this album before, but the cover is so iconic that I figured it would be fine. I can appreciate the vocal talent here, but similar to how I can't seem to find a way to appreciate jazz I just couldn't get into this.
Had a hard time staying awake through most of this, even while exercising. I respect the shift towards more R&B, as a sign of evolution, but not my favorite.
She generally has a great voice, but a lot of the vocals on these songs were breathy, and the album was pretty boring
Meh. Mariah obviously has a great voice but this is pretty forgettable and likely one I won't listen to again. Not my genre and it all just seems a bit sterile. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)
Big same song 12 times in a row energy
Honestly not that great of an album. Vocals are obviously very good but overall not an album I want to listen to
Meh
I only really know Mariah Carey from her Christmas stuff, so I was excited to get into her more R&B side. However, I was quite disappointed in just how boring the whole thing was. Her voice is the only shining star throughout, but overall, its just a boring, not so fun voice demo. Also reminded me of Christmas in mid-august so that took a star off. 2/5
That was pretty boring, her voice deserved more than a basic clic track and keyboard.
4/10 Hated this in the 90s, nothing's changed. Saccharine music with no rythmn, blues or soul.
Похожие песни друг на друга
Yeah... I'm only a few tracks in and I can tell this is not for me. It feels like it’s aimed at younger listeners, especially those in their first crush/first breakup phase. It feels... professional rather than authentic. Very Radio friendly and deliberately designed to achieve a commercial goal. Very polished, but for my old man ears, a decaying child of the revolution, it sounds a bit ...plastic
I feel like this the American version of Celine Dion. Beautiful voice. Cheesy songwriting. It was a hard listen.
I thought this was more up-tempo than it actually is. Listening to it on a warm afternoon at work was so dangerous. A 1 doesn't feel fair because it's not BAD but I want to give it a 1 so badly because I had to go grab a soda to make it through.
Mariah Carey has too good a voice to have such mid songs
Zzzzz...
This is unnecessary. I can't commit these precious minutes to this album. I heard all songs, and only allowed the first, and one other to finish. This was that much of an irritant. I'm sure her voice must be impressive, but not to me. Not these songs.
2/5. Not for me, but Lauren would have loved it
Good lord, what a slog to get through. Carey's vocals are beautiful, but I've been in dry office meetings that were more energising than this album.
Not my cup of tea. I really didn't like it but I know it's just bc of my music taste. Every song sounds the same to me. "My all" is really a banger though +1 for her voice
The songs are so forgettable and boring
Oh boy, this really drags me back to the old Carson Daly TRL days. This feels very much like a tale of two albums; one part late 90s Pop/R&B, one part Adult Contemporary. I'm not sure I love the former, but definitely don't care for the latter. If this album didn't start the trend of stretching every high note into a full scale just to flex your vocal skills, it was certainly on the front end. Almost 30 years later, pop music hasn't recovered.
Boring, and not for me.
I had low expectations, but this was actually pretty enjoyable. You can write her off, but this was peak Mariah and this was a soulful, sensual album in the late 90s craziness. High 2s.
Not a fan of whatever genre this is
I can’t stand the super downtempo R&B stuff. Amazing singing though.
I gave this an honest listen since my wife is a big fan of Mariah. Her voice is great, but the music is not for me. Sorry wifey. 2/5.
Not so much my thing. Sorry Mariah, I'd dig into this deeper but I'm about four albums behind so if you don't grab me at first listen then it's not happening.
Ugh... Not much of fan of Mariah Carey and this album prove that thought...
Great voice, not so great album.
While a family member had this when I was younger, and appreciate the skill level, it is not something I would actively listen to again. Thus the 2 of 5 (if I could it would be 2.5).
I know Mariah Carey is fun to look at, and she's got an amazing vocal range, but this album just bored me to tears.
i dont really have any strong feelings one way or the other. what i do know is that ill never listen to this again. it can sit with all the other 2/5 albums that i dont hate but dont care about
Last week had so many bangers I knew something terrible was going to happen.
Ok
She’s got an incredible voice for sure, but I found it a very boring album. A ballad heavy one toned piece. Listened while running and it was not the right vibe at all.
Boy this was a chore to listen to - not my style of music at all. It’s only been one day since I’ve listened and I can’t recall a single tune.
Rating: 3.5/10 Nah.
Amazing voice. Amazing range. Mostly average tracks drag down the couple of standouts. Shook Ones sample was unexpected! 2.5/5
Pas mon truuuuc
Was never really gonna like it, take a 2 Will I listen to again: 0%
Allt låter väldigt lika, bra röst men lite tråkiga låtar. Blev bättre mot slutet. Stark 2
Slow dance songs from fifth grade that I didn’t like then and don’t like now, but her voice is good so I’ll give it two stars for that.
When it popped up I expected I might enjoy this one. Nope - found it pretty uninteresting. I don't think it's aged well. "Butterfly" has middle school choir concert energy.
Really
Unlike Carey herself, this did not age well.
Honestly, I'm a but torn on this. For starters, not my thing but something about this is likable. It's an obviously well produced album but much of it is fairly forgettable. The Prince song is a highlight but pales in comparison to the original.
Mariah Carey is an immense talent, but her vocals are the equivalent of a shredding metal guitarist that is more about showing off and less about melody. Pair that with formulaic 90s R&B and P. Diddler and best I can offer is 2. I heard this album enough in my teens and I refuse to give that sex criminal a single stream.
I was a fan but this album didn't do it for me. I'm sick of butterfly, the songs are too long and repetitive. Her vocal is OK.
she can obviously sing but is it really that much of a must-hear? idk
Raw talent. Wasted talent.
Great voice. Terrible songs.
Well-produced with a great voice, but soooo generic. Also, it’s impossible to have any real hook when the singer’s voice jumps all over on every single like of every song.
Mariah Carey's vocal range is inhuman; that said, there's not much else on this album that does much for me. 2/5
Was dreading this but it's very listenable. That being said, it was just very inoffensive and passed me by. I'd give it a 2.5, but I'm gonna give it a 2 for being almost an hour. Too long. 2/5
These songs would be a lot more tolerable if they were 2-3 mins long each instead of 5-6.
I love Mariah as a personality. Her hits are hits for a reason. Mariah is really best in small doses though. I’m happy when I hear one of her songs played (unless it’s Xmas season). I just don’t really want to listen to an entire album of hers in one sitting.
Every song sounds the same, yes she can sing but that was about it for the album.
Too repetitive
Whatever. Her voice sounds great but she just does too much with it. Like way, way too much. The lyrics are fluffy throwaways that mean nothing. Literally just copy and paste for an entire album cause every song sounds the same. Bleh.
uuuuughhhh. you don't need to have 12 different vocal runs in every single song. don't care how strong your vocals might be-it's way too much
Fine if not extremely boring
All I Want For Christmas is enough Mariah for me
Boring, annoying, only sometimes enjoyable. Vocals? Maybe she does have a big range and a strong voice but it wasn't nothing great to me. It was not horrible, but not good. And no real drums.
I don’t really understand how an album can have such stunning vocals but still be completely underwhelming
I was excited to listen to this one when I first saw Mariah Carey come up. Voice is great, song is mid. I say song because this album is one really long song.
That was a lot. Of notes.
Her voice is incredible, but there is way too much filler on this album.
