There were some songs I liked, others were too slow, breathy, or boring. I liked her voice and the overall vibes.

A bit poppy but pretty good. Whenever You Call was kinda painful, super cheesy strings, but at least she didn’t do gratuitous riffs like that on every song. 6/10

A good album, I like all of the songs. Mariah Carey has a nice and calming voice. I liked Butterfly and Outside the most.

The hip-hop tracks are solid late 90s singles. The Top 40 vocal pop songs are rough. The vocal performances are great, of course, but suffer because they are accompanied by middle of the road instrumentals.

Was this really as late as '97? I would have sworn it was, like,' 93 or '94. Oh well. I didn't enjoy it in the 90s, and while I can't exactly say that I enjoyed it at the arse end of 2024, I may have grown more tolerant of the warbling.

Listening to this album is a bit like taking a bath in warm syrup - soothing and relaxing, but ultimately a bit over sweet. Mariah Carey has a gorgeous voice, but she does that thing where it warbles over half a dozen notes in a single word. It’s probably technically very accomplished, but it sounds like a real life autotune in places. The best song was a cover of Prince’s Beautiful Ones and I liked the tweeting bird noises too.

Brings back memories

She's clearly an amazing singer, but I found a lot of the songs on this record pretty boring.

90s nostalgia, a lot of average songs on it. But 3 for the memories.

“Honey” is just incredible. So smooth, so sexy, so easy to listen to. And it’s got that great, funky beat! The sparkling slow jams are beautiful but sometimes too cheesy for my taste. I prefer the hip-hop-leaning numbers. I love how the mix layers different vocal tracks so that we’re sometimes listening to seven Mariah Careys at once. You can lose yourself in the mix and surround yourself with her voice. I think the effect adds to the sexy, bedroom appeal of the music. “Close My Eyes” is great. I love that “la-da-da-da-da” hook. Ooh “Fly Away” has a nice house beat! I wish there were more dance tracks like this.

Mariah Carey is one of the best pop/R&B singers of all time and I'm super glad she is finally on this list. From the minute you hear her backup scat-like harmonies in track 1, to her wildly impressive technical vocal runs, you KNOW that it's Mariah. IMO this isn't one of Mariah's best albums though as I think she's not really daring enough in it. I want more of her front and center stage voice when I hear her, and this one comes across as more of the sultry smooth voice. She truly has one of the best pop voices ever and I don't mean to hate on it. I just hope we get her Christmas album or "The Emancipation of Mimi" or "Daydream" on here.

Our first Mariah? Kind of fitting before Christmas, and I learned that infamous song is from 94! This was a good album, I’ve never been a huge fan of hers but her voice is undeniable. Glad we got one of hers!

I think there is a maturation of this album from "Vision of Love," which really just has her putting it all out there. My biggest problem is, she does a lot of that whispery, breath-y thing which is a bit frustrating. The Butterfly reprise... whoa, I really liked the high notes as a background, eerieness. If she was a different singer I could imagine her using that effect in some really dark songs (but I don't think that's something she would do). "Honey", although I had heard it before, sounds more like something that's played in the background of a party in a movie. It's background noise, like a number of the songs. Over 25 years later and "Babydoll" just feels all kind of cringe-y to me. Yikes on those lyrics. There are a lot of nice effects and she does her part really well. Some of the production style is very 1997, which really dates it now. But if I was listening to this a bunch back in the day I might not notice it as much. It's the equivalent of cotton candy, in that it just doesn't have a lot of filling or heaviness to it. It's light as air and maybe it'll fill you up but you will definitely get sick living off of it. Definitely in the middle ground for me, so that's a 2.5 rounding up to a 3.

The opposite of most on this list, this album has a confident, talented vocalist with lackluster instrumentation behind her. This is still too close to the early '90s smooth pop for me to enjoy much.

Terrific voice but most of these fell flat for me. I kept wanting more of Fantasy from her earlier album but this never got to that level.

"Adult contemporary" is such a contemptible phrase, but really fits Butterfly: Carey's take on RnB here is highly individual but desexualized to great effect. The AC label obscures the disc's dependence on time, that you can put out a quality sound without breaking ground. Vocal acrobatics then subduction.

Mariah is a great singer, but I tend to prefer her more upbeat songs, and this album is full of ballads. Just bores me, even though she has a lovely voice. The singles from this album are probably my favorite songs from it. I'm giving it an extra star partly just because "Honey" is such a fantastic song. But yeah, just meh on this one.

The music isn’t bad, but it’s hidden behind overindulgent singing. Don’t get me wrong, Mariah Carey has a spectacular voice and I appreciate the virtuosity. But it doesn’t need to be shown off every single phrase of every single song.

J'ai trouvé l'album un peu front-loaded, mais généralement il se tient bien. Aussi, il n'y a pas tellement de mauvaise pièce. Par contre, il est un tantinet unidimensionel et vers la fin ça commence à être répétitif, surtout que c'est un peu trop smooth tout le long. 7/10

Potential for a great album sadly eclipsed by oversinging and overproduction. Tear it down a little and we'd have something fantastic here.

I really enjoyed listening to this but was dealing with some complex personal admin at the time so didn't focus that well. It's a banging album and really takes me back to simpler times... The voice is obviously the star of the show, but also love the nostalgic vibes. Not sure this is my fave MC album though and it kind of blurred into one and nothing stood out too much. A cool sound though overall.

Well I am impressed by Mariah Carey, of course I am, and there were some slamming tunes on here but broadly speaking it isn't really my thing. It was perfectly adequate driving music. I remember our A Level music tech teacher (the missionary one) said Mariah was the best singer of all time ever, I often think about that

She undoubtably got a fantastic voice and these are good songs, but it just didn't really interest me, can't imagine actually listening to it for fun but it doesn't seem pretty good.

I remember several of these from when they were on the radio. Some of them are ok.

This was a big turning point in her career, but I kinda wish she'd shocked the world and made an art-pop masterpiece with Brian Eno instead. Guess there's still time. One can always dream.

Hard to listen to without cringing, hasn’t really held up

uuuugh I remember singles from this coming out and thinking "what's with all these cute pop singers doing DIRTY ASS HOE SHIT with rappers? hahaha. Of course at the time I was like 13 and had no idea how music marketing worked and what a big splash gangsta rap had made in the pop industry, esp. in America. I was into metal and punk but all the girls I was trying to root were right into this, All Saints, etc. Ballads mixed with DIRTY ASS HOE SHIT. It was a trying time lol. I'm surprised how much of this album is familiar - the first 5-6 songs must've all been singles. But the whole thing was a struggle, it's just too much of the same thing. She has a huge range and the vocal theatrics are impressive... but after about 30min it's really tiring. I wonder if Mariah Carey is the reason all the idol-type singers do this shit non-stop? ah either way, if it'd been half the length I could've given this a 4. The imitation Bone Thugs song was actually pretty cool. 3/5.

Mariah does sound lovely here, and songs like Honey and Breakdown are pure 90s RnB goodness. But too many of the other tracks meld into ballad malaise to call this album truly great.

I once worked on a show that featured MC and a host of other performers. Dick Clark, who I like to refer to as Cock Clark (because he really was a dick), owned the rights to produce the American Music Awards in 1998(?) Anyhow, the AMAs had booked MC and I remember when she showed up for rehearsal the day before the show, she threw a big shitfit because she didn't have a honeybear. Yep, a honey bear, you know the little plastic bears that squirt honey? The entire crew had their panties in a bunch about working with MC and the people that would interface with her... I think those were the days that she was dating or married to Tommy Mattola who was rumored to be mafia or at least connected(?) Anyhow, she had a long list of demands that her dressing room be stocked with. Honey and tea, because you know, her voice, was one. Evidently someone didn't get the memo about the honey dispenser being the bear kind and MC went on a tear yelling at everyone and threatening not to perform the following day. Anyway, this album doesn't speak to me, but I really did enjoy that first track 'Honey.'

A few tracks were fire, but a handful were dragged. But the ones that hit, hit hard! Girls got pipes like nobodies business.

This album is perfect if you want to listen to pining in specifically the 90s pop genre. I mean that in a very positive sense. It's not something I usually listen to which is kind of fun.

Very polished and produced. Smooth sweet soulful R&B vibe. Main detraction is that everything blends together on the first listen through... very ballad heavy. Enjoyed Close My Eyes and Whenever You Call.

About time I get encountered by a butterfly and all I can think of is... okay. I was rather psyched and pleasantly surprised get this album in the generator and was looking forward to listening to it and the further I got into this album, the more underwhelmed I was by it. After the boppiness that was Honey, I was rather annoyed and irritated by the balladery that followed and the sheer drop of expectations levied towards this album. I get that this album has its fans and I respect what it achieved for Mariah and the people involved, I just expected something different. Oh well. Favorites: Honey, The Roof (Back in Time), Fourth of July, Breakdown, Close My Eyes, The Beautiful Ones.

You know, it's high ticket mainstream hip hop soul, which is fine. Carey is a great singer but it all has a little too much of that record biz gloss on it for my tastes. The unnecessary version of The Beautiful Ones served as an unflattering highlight the difference between this and the equally mainstream output of a genius auteur like Prince.

It is a solid R&B album, but I didn't hear anything timeless or unique from any other good R&B album.

Good production and decent songs. Not my thing overall.

A few things to unpack here - Carey is an amazing vocalist and this album a sold so many records. And if this project is going to have a nineties soul with hip hop influences this is probably the one to include - here the mainstream shift from pop towards urban sound can truly said to have begun - soon damn near every track and artist would have Dre or Puffy or Neptunes or Wyclef Jean or Timbaland producing and a guest rapper for Street cred. Is this album brilliant? The upbeat tracks are pretty good, the ballads could all be the same song and some of Mariah’s vocals stylings are initiating so no, not take, but I’m going to argue the album fully merits a place here on this list (and I would rather listen to this again than, say, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway).

A logical next album from The Prodigy would be Mariah Carey. Thanks Randomizer. Same year though. "Butterfly" is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. This album was a further move from Mariah away from strictly pop and into R&B/hip-hop. Yeah, there is a decent split between the two styles. Of couse, in no way do I think of Enimem listening to this. Using a number of different producers including Walter Afanasieff (more pop) and Sean "Puffy" Combs (more hip-hop) helped the diversity. Mariah was separated from her then husband which contributed to some of the lyrical content. The album received general acclaim and sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The album opens with the first single "Honey." It was written with Puff Daddy. Light and airy. Hip-hop with a nice bass. A catchy chorus. She wants the honey. Take that as you may. The second song and single switches to a Aranasieff-produced ballad song in "Butterfly." A piano and a soulful chorus and backing vocals. Let someone from free and see if they come back. A Latin guitar and slow beat highlight the ballad "My All." Inspired by a trip to Puerto Rico. Mariah belting it out. "The Roof (Back in Time)" has more heavy beats and in the R&B/hip-hop category. A sample of Mobb Deep in the chorus. The production of Puff Daddy highlights the third single "Breakdown." A nice blend of R&B and hip-hop. Layered vocals. Two members of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony rap a few of the verses. The album ends with "Outside." It's a slow ballad about Mariah's biracial experience. Maybe her best vocals on the album- souful and beautiful. This was about expectations. I had very low ones coming in. Not exactly in my wheel of music but this was fine. I had heard a few of the songs of course. Mariah has a phenomenal voice. It had great production. The variety between her hip-hop/R&B and pop ballads kept it fairly interesting. I know you can a lot worse in the pop category circa 1997.

It's a great representation of 90s music with extra quality added by Mariah's exceptional vocal performances. Three tracks stood out for me: My All, Outside - both with just perfect, dramatic vocal delivery and the first track - Honey, which stands out lyrically from all the sweetness elsewhere on the track - due to its not so subtle double meaning. These double meanings are a bit surprising - if not shocking - for this particular type of an album, which then also makes the entire album more interesting and daring. Still, the sweetness and cornyness drags on a bit too much and there's a bit too much filler. Luckily, the most beutiful vocals are kept for the ending which makes you want to keep on listening to the album to hear that Outside. 3-3.5/5

This is our first album in the bottom 20 globally!! This sh** lowkey kinda good. Y’all can’t tell me you ain’t moving on Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise). No, this isn’t Arctic Monkeys. It’s not fast or exciting. It’s 90’s R&B and when taking that into context, this is pretty good. I’m between a 2 and 3. My mind says a 2, but my heart says 3. However, because she has the waist jewelry thing on in the album cover, my quivering member says 3. By majority, it’s a 3, and yes I expect to get flamed for this score. It’s a 2, plain and simple. Idc what my body says. No, I’m going with my heart. It’s a 3. It’s a bottom of the barrel 3, but a 3 nonetheless.

I don't think I've ever listened to a Mariah Carey album from start to finish. I was curious about this one. I thought it might be a fun pop record. Sadly, its like 80% boring ballads. No thanks.

This album is not for me. There was an audience for this and it clearly launched Mariah's career. She has a great voice and the production value is high. Artistically it really has no merit. It doesn't push the boundaries and is pretty much nothing to me. Even for the era that it was released it didn't really move the needle. It sounds like great end credit music for a Disney movie or a romcom I've never seen. Not sure who I would recommend it too. That being said I am sure that people that like this music would argue it is a classic. Again she has an undeniably good voice, but it could be used for a better purpose.

Vocals do shine on this one. “Mariah Carey has a great voice” is like, one of the least controversial opinions a 90’s kid like me could have. Some reviews I saw were claiming a lot of her vocals were “showing off”, which is a criticism I find as idiotic as when people criticize bands like Rush for “showing off” their instrumental prowess. Great love songs with more instrumental diversity than I expected, with piano, guitar, Latin percussion, trap beats, and more sprinkled around to create the soundscapes. All that said, the fact that most of these are fundamentally low tempo R&B love songs does mean that they fade together a bit after a while. The first few songs are great, but after that it gets old. A heavily frontloaded album, but that front load is good enough to give this a decent rating. Top Tracks: - Honey – Nice dance track. - Butterfly – Solid anthemic track. - My All – High tier love ballad with a little bit of Latin influence. - The Roof (Back in Time) – Great sensual song.

It shames me to like this. Beyond a select few hits, I hated the predominance of R&B in the 90s pop charts, most of which were super generic and too focused on highlighting the singer's voice than anything. Maybe Mariah invented the trend. But either way, this is almost an exception, or at least the very least when you put effort into making a decent album out of it. The production is fantastic, with interesting arrangements taking influence from hip hop, jazz, and downtempo, both atmospheric and chill, with smooth transitions between tracks that make the whole album consistent despite the varying styles. I love the multi-tracking vocals, allowing the compositions to be colorful and full of life. However, I think it takes a sharp turn into the R&B realm of the generic, uninspired, and lame following "Breakdown." Production is still great, but not interesting enough to maintain my attention, especially with the tiresome overused tricks. My favorite songs were the disco tracks like "Honey" and "Fly Away", and I wish they expanded on that more. But I can see the merit in the well-made ballads "Butterfly" and "My All." In the end, the only track to be taken seriously is "Honey". Favorites: Honey, The Roof, Fourth of July, Breakdown, Fly Away

This was actually pretty good. Not something I'd typically listen to, but enjoyable nonetheless. I would listen to it again!

Her involvement with the songs is something that I respect, and I definitely underestimated her singing abilities, but the songs themselves are just a bit lacklustre for me, nothing exciting or memorable.

Mariah has a good voice but even though this song was a departure from her usual pop towards more R&B the album was just kinda boring. A whole hour of slow ballads that all sound the same is just not that entertaining

Geez - I totally forgot how tiresome R&B tracks had become by the late 90s. Slow jam after slow jam with synthesized everything accompanied by little more than a fretless bass guitar. FKA Twigs this is not! While still largely constrained to the formula above, I would point to the track 'Breakdown' as a pleasant break out (at least in meter) from the well-worn guardrails that the rest of the album feels tied down by. Above the tracks Mariah's vocals are flawless and float back and forth between smokey seduction and belting power. I'd point to 'My All' and 'Close My Eyes' as being the stars of the album in particular.

Of course Mariah Carey has a good voice. The production seems a bit dated though and some of the songs read as very shallow (esp that one about growing up too soon) Overall it’s not an unpleasant experience, it could just be so much more

I wasn't relishing listening to this album much, but it was more pleasant than I anticipated. That said, it did conform to my preconceptions: silky smooth R&B underlying Mariah's unique voice. Wouldn't listen again, but don't feel that my ears have been violated.

Vocal powerhouse

This gave me a chance to spend some time with Mariah Carey, as generally in the past I had avoided her. I was not previously familiar with any of the songs here, even though they seemed to have been popular. "Honey" isn't the sort of song I would normally pick to listen to, but I found it a somewhat interesting and engaging piece, especially the second time through. Then, there was the rest of the hour of warbling slow jam adult contemporary (maybe best exemplified by "Fourth of July") with a soupçon of hip hop (see "Breakdown"). This very, very extended smooth mood seemed only to be broken by the dancey anthem "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" which did inspire me to raise my arms and strut along a bit before going back to the boudoir. I might just feel a little more appreciative of her work, although it's not likely I'll be back. I have, however, filed "Fly Away" for inspiration emergencies.

I did not love this album. I found it a bit boring. It got me thinking that maybe I don’t care for r&b slow jams…but that’s not right…this particular album just didn’t hit in the right spot for me today.

I like my divas a little rougher than this. Mariah Carey is a remarkable singer and I appreciate why this is a popular album. There are some songs that I warmed up to more than I thought I would after several listens. The vocals flit around like… butterflies. There were times I was a bit bored and grew weary of some of the vocals. I think I like Mariah’s pop phase more than this move towards R&B. Still, this is a polished presentation of Mariah Carey’s formidable vocal skills.

I've only listened to Caution which is one of my favorite albums from Mariah Carey, so it was nice to check out some of her older material. While I'm not super into her slow ballad pop cuts on here, it's balanced with the hip-hop influenced bangers and R&B burners. It's a very decent album although it wears its era on its sleeve.

I wanted to enjoy this more than I did but yeah, all the songs are just a bit samey, and there's just a lot of vocal layers that are kind of buried in the mix and add nothing. When Mariah actually has a strong vocal line to sing, she sounds incredible, it's just a shame that a lot of the album is so washy

The Roof (Back in Time) - okej, okej, može se i tako iskoristit sample koji je Mobb Deep napravio za Shook Ones Part II. Prije nekih 13-14 godina bio sam ogromni fan BTNH-a, pa zato i znam Breakdown - koja je za mene klasik. Ne, ovo uopće nije loš album, u većinu slučajeva nije moja porcija paštašute (žalopojke većinom), ali ima dobrih stvari i nek sam ovaj album preslušao. Pod dobre stvari stavljam u potpunosti slijedeće - Honey, The Roof (Back in Time), Breakdown i Close My Eyes.

I actually liked the majority of it. Not every song, but a lot of them I can see why it was a hit, it's quality. Phenomenal vocal control she's got It makes me nostalgic, they don't make music like this anymore.

Was actually a bit surprised by this album. Had never listened to it and it was better then i thought.

Very much not my thing, but made for nice background music while I worked.

I find this style of smooth RnB a little monotonous, the best parts of the album for me were when the formula got shaken up a little bit, like on "Breakdown". Everything else was just fine, but it just isn't impactful or bold enough to catch my attention, just kinda slides off me. Mariah is a great singer, though.

3 i guess. not my jam and I did seriously consider a 2, but her vocal skills kept it at a 3.

Raspy, breathy, kind of seductive. Nice beats, but not something I’d play on the regular.

Brings me back to being a kid for sure. Butterflys have a lot of symbolism in my life. So it gets a quite a bit of points on that end. I am not the biggest R&B fan so, I feel like maybe my rating should be taken with a grain of salt. But man, is there a lot of Just AAaahhh or OOOooOOooooOOOss lol.

First time listening: 8/12 songs liked I much prefer anything upbeat by Mariah Carey: the airy tone she provides becomes TOO airy the slower the song is. Not that disliked the songs on this album, I just like her fast-paced songs more. That said, r&b classic. 2 songs saved

At first I did not enjoy it because it was way too smooth for my taste, but as it went on I settled on the sound and started to sort of enjoy it. I had no idea which song I was on though because they all sound very similar to me.

Sensual, feminine, soothing, pretty. Mariah's luscious vocals are on full display. Gorgeous production. Songs mostly address bedroom tenderness, reminiscences, relationships. Overall, this one wraps like a soft embrace. Doesn't speak to me personally but I can appreciate an album well realized.

She does have an incredible voice, and I can certainly see how she influenced pop music at the time. Not really my style, though.

Not really my type of thing, but Honey has a cool squelchy bass line. I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.

I didn't notice this ever changing songs. 57 minutes of the want thing

Mariah Carey, inventor of over-singing and writer of annoyingly catchy Christmas songs, strayed from her usual brand of cheesy ballads for this album and put in a dose of beige hip-hop as well. The less said about most of it the better - by the time the uber-schmaltz of Whenever You Call came around my cholesterol levels were through the roof! The album is slightly improved towards the end by a dance tune, Fly Away, during which she doesn't sing much, and a pretty decent cover of The Beautiful Ones which stays quite faithful to the original. So I'll give it a low 2 stars and be thankful that I can move on.

A few good songs sung by a horrible, narcissistic, self-absorbed diva. Her voice is amazing, but has too many runs. Her personality sucks and that's about all I hear when I hear her songs. I just can't enjoy anything by her anymore. And WHY cover a perfect Prince song? 2/5

It feels like without her, you don't get Christina Aguilera, but some songs feel like background to a 90s film or a bit generic now and fade quickly.

Not for me - pick a note

This album is not devoid of good songs, the opener is especially smart, but there are some real clangers on the track list too, title track Butterfly being chief among them. It's an album which actually punishes active listening. The more you let it fade into the background the more dreamy and pleasant it becomes in its faintness.

Mariah gets a v high 2, would have been a 3 but there were just too many ballads here breaking up my favoured smooth RnB

Look, her voice is amazing, but this record is just boring.

Released in 1997 this is categorized as R&B, hip hop soul ballads. I know who she is and probably heard songs on the radio but have never specifically listened to her before.  So I listened to this album a few times to form a decent opinion. I don't understand her popularity or why this album is on the list.  The music is simple, the effects are cheesy and the lyrics are syrupy. She can obviously sing but she does too much urban yodeling.  I liked Close My Eyes. Fly Away is uptempo for a change.

This started off alright but as with a lot of (contemporary) R&B this feels so same-y and gets so boring. Her voice is great though.

Oof her voice is the reason she is famous and the reason that I find listening her worse than nails on a chalkboard. I know that this is going to be hard to hear from someone who listens to Throbbing Gristle, but this is pretty close to unbearable for me. Only two good songs.

I like R&B but I'm realizing that it needs to be modern R&B. Alot of this stuff from the 90's/ early 2000's just doesn't do it for me. Her voice is good but that's about it. Everything else just follows the same formula the entire length of the album and it gets old quick. 2/5

Breathy, ad-libbing 90s pop/r&b. There might be a guilty pleasure hidden on this thing. A decent showcase of talent but also obnoxious.

My All

A ver, aquí nadie va a negar que Mariah tiene una voz increíble y única. Todos de acuerdo. Pero caray, el disco y en general este tipo de R&B noventero, me mata de la flojera. Salvo un par de canciones melosas pegajosas, el resto del disco me pareció planísimo, insulso y formulaico. Claro que la voz de Mariah destaca, pero no me imagino volviédole a dar play a esto para escucharlo completo una vez más.

This album is pretty plain and uninteresting. Sure, Mariah has a great voice, but this kind of popish R&B is very simplistic and formulaic, and there are much better albums of this kind that show a wider range of sounds or, at least, of better melodies. This album feels made just to show Mariah's vocal range, for her to do her best and not transmit anything. The songs lack of just a bit of sentiment. I am not asking for a heartfelt song, but at least some more movement, some more emotion. She feels very correct in most of the songs, and most of them are just pretty similar-sounding. I can find the good in this album: it is listenable, at some extent even sweet and beautiful, and her voice is really good. But is is just a good album that, at the end of the day, has nothing memorable. It is too correct for being something of actual worth, it feels cold at many moments. And I cannot find anything about Mariah except her voice. It feels... pleasant but very unattractive. The songs are pretty bland and some even feel very uninspired. Some are just good because of Mariah's voice, but, then, the thing is, this album has nothing to do without her, and, still, I cannot find anything else than a "look at how greatly I can sing". Well, what I need then is a "look what I have to say, what I want to transmit". Rather than just a bunch of songs with tiring instrumentals and easy lyrics. It is a very uninspired album that feels more like a catalog of vocals rather than a musical project worth analysing.

Mariah Carey was a goddess in the 90s, but man, I really don't like this album or most 90s and 2000s r&b. The production style, the blandness, etc.

Apart from the peerless song the roof there is a lot of samey retreads of older better songs. Shame really. Careys voice demands better material than this

I dislike this more than I should, it's not terrible, but I just don't wanna deal with this rn.

Well, she obviously has an incredible voice. The production is polished and tight. This was obviously influential on popular music as we know it. I think I’m just not a fan of this kind of 90s R&B. It’s all a bit to sparkling and sprawling for me. While the production sounds fine, it’s pretty dated and has aged into mild corniness. Almost constant vocals and melody, but no hooks that really dig into me. The influence from hip-hop added some welcome juice, but as a whole this is something I respect but will not revisit. See you in December, Mariah.

While I've never been a Mariah fan, I can appreciate her vocal talent. And she has had a few catchy pop tunes... I could probably be persuaded not to change the radio station if Fantasy came on. But this album is far too syrupy / schlocky for my taste. I had a hard time making it to the end.

That was pretty boring. Get a famous singer to pretend she's black, but disregard the fact that she doesn't have the soul to pull it off.

Boring album. Every song sounds like Cinderella is about to descend a staircase while doing vocal warmups.

I mean her voice is good but everything else is just boring. Boring, paint by numbers R&B production, most of them follow the same formula and are overly long IMO. I know I'm not the target audience here but it says something that the most excited I got was when a well known sample of a better song got used. 3/10

Oh, Mariah… the cover pic is so promising. That voice is sublime even wth all the over singing, vowel stretching, diphthong lingering, melismatic runs… that just goes nowhere. The production is squeaky clean. Bright snare beats, tinkling piano runs, sweeping strings, acoustic guitar runs… it’s so boring. I just don’t like radio friendly r&bish pop. I’m sorry, butterfly. 2.5

Such a great voice often not given the full scope to 'go for it'. A lot of the hushed, sultry voice over similar beats which just seems a waste.

How many shrill WHOOOOS can you take, 56 min of it is too much. Yeah she is a talented singer and can hit the high note but the music is lifeless. It all sounds so machine like and how many writers, producers and drum programmers do you need to make an album. It is way to adult contemporary, slow and machinelike for me, I give it a 2 just because of her talent but I could have died without hearing this

Is Mariah Carey the only musical artist whose Spotify bio mentions Lee Daniels' The Butler? I think I just don't like R&B. This is clearly a good version of it though. Her voice is technically crazy but she's not doing like full free-jazz showoff runs it's still mostly used for melody. The late 90s hip hop production gives it some energy (the producer is so talented - this Diddy fellow is going places). The cover of The Beautiful Ones is so strange it's just worse than the Prince version (of course) but it's also mostly not Mariah singing? Who is that for?

I respect the female RnB voice and swag, and Mariah is definitely a legend in the game. Not always feeling her music, but that voice is something else.

This was a good opportunity to learn more about the origins of R&B, although that's not to say this album taught me very much. This particular iteration of the genre seems to be centered around giving the vocalist ample space to flex their chops, and it gets to be too much, in my opinion. As a singer, I normally appreciate runs and trills, but when every phrase has some embellishment like that, and the singing is played up to the extent that you can't make out the lyrics, that's where I would draw the line, I guess. My favorite parts were probably the background vocals or parts that had layered vocals resembling gospel. The instrumentals sound pretty dated

she's a good singer and yet this album made me hate her singing by the end. Way too much whiny ornamentation. the male ad-libs are lame, and the instrumentals are not much better (quite dated)

For adult contemporary, this album exists! It’s not my genre. Matter of fact, I kinda’ got bored with this album about three songs in. The album is a vessel for Carey’s exceptional vocal range. After a while, though, I felt the vocal fluctuations, vocal whistles and nasal head voice singing got redundant, and paired with the lacking musical variation and lyrical prose of a thirteen year-old on most songs, this album just falls flat for me. If I was still in my player days (…imaginary, admittedly) I would have played this album as background music because it was smooth and I hopefully wouldn’t have to pay that close of attention to it. Otherwise, this is a one-and-done.

Random thoughts: * Wow, I did not like this one. * I respect Mariah Carey and she was obviously a huge artist in the 90s/aughts. * This was clearly the wrong album to choose. It should have been the Daydream album. This is classic 1001 getting too cute. * This album was full of sappy ballads, I can't believe how popular music like this was. (I'm assuming it is not anymore.) * Butterfly was alright and the upbeat songs were alright too. The Kayzie Bone song was fun. But that was about it. * Skip this one and pick up Daydream or #1 to Infinity compilation.

Ok so I honestly appreciate her restrained style of singing. She has wonderful dynamics and range, and her breathy delivery adds an ethereal and mysterious kind of vibe, partially because I can’t tell what she’s singing, unless I really look for the words. It also makes the big singing parts really pop, great effect. But… it’s too much, she stays in that breathy style and it just ends of falling flat through the course of the album. It’s weird rating an album that is “by a singer.” The songs are ok. I love the minor key ones, and hot take but Butterfly Reprise is the best one on the album. But overall not many songs stand out, and the production just feels pretty robotic and basic. I think more could have been made of these songs.

Very similar to Christina’s previous albums I’ve listened to. Great voice and some good songs but nothing spectacular. Started to drag on by the end

While they were negotiating the contract for this album do you think the haggled other the inclusion of “the note” needlessly in almost every song? They’re like “5 million and 60% of the songs have the note.” She’s like, “give me 10 million and I’ll do it all the fucking time!” In my fantasy MC drives a hard bargain and usually gets what she wants. Sometimes you’ll hear “the note” just whispering through the background of some song, unrelated to anything else that’s going on. One time I thought there was some horribly errant caterwaul ensuing in the middle distance only to realize it was just another yoddley (sic) application of “the note” and its near relatives. In the end nothing remarkable except maybe the galling modernity of the title track’s ode to open marriage. Wink. I know that’s not what she’d say it’s about but it’s fun to imagine while you listen to it. More fun than whatever appalling banality she’s actually screaming about at any rate.

This sound is a bit boring to me. It sounds pretty monotone all the way through. 2-3 star vibes so far. I like the song breakdown a lot! And Roof is alright. The lyricism on this album is pretty good, but without her phenomenal vocals this album would evaporate entirely.

Oh hello Mariah. Uhmmm. Let’s see what happens… at least it’s the only one… Um… this one’s actually hard. Mariah has a beautiful voice, no doubt. But… man this is uneven. Does it want to be RnB? Because if it does, it makes some very poor late 90’s choices in production. Her duet with Dru Hill is very strong, but on other tracks that I guess are trying to be more “hip-hop,” boy is it baaad. Cringy bad. At those moments I just want her Christmas album. And really, Mariah on a good day is selling a So Cal lifestyle that I never embraced/ never wanted. So… 2 Btw - I have been informed that I have not been properly using the Boolean. It should be true or false, not yes or no. I say: same difference. My husband says: no, precision matters. So… Boolean for Butterfly: FALSE- there was no need for me to have heard this before I die. I would much rather hear Mariah’s Christmas album

Wow that's got to be some kind of record for number of vocal notes in one album. And after 55 minutes of it, I can't recall a single melody. Never too annoying, but not sure what type of life situation I would be in where I would want to go through this 55-minute journey again. 2.4 stars.

First time listening to a Mariah album in full. 90s R&B is just not my thing at all. The music sounds nearly identical on all the songs and the biggest selling point seems to be the vocals. But the thing is, I don't really care about impressive vocals. Mariah could hit whistle notes for 3 minutes straight and I just wouldn't care. Is it a well produced, well performed album? Sure. But it's just not for me 2/5

Not super my thing but fairly pleasant

You see, I’m not opposed to the theoretical concept of Mariah. In fact early 1990 Mariah is pretty good. She was a kid who sounded like a fully grown adult. Ironically, on an album called Butterfly, we have an exercise in regression where she’s a fully grown adult trying to sound like a kid with this wispy voice and toddler like cooing. As a listener we’re begging for her to belt one out Vision of Love style, just like we all know she can. Instead Mariah retreats to her safe space, which is dozens of glissandos for no apparent reason whatsoever. The lyrics are bad too, a grab bag of rhyming platitudes. Except for one flash of truth telling midway through the album: “Still I feel like that child as I look at the moon. Maybe I grew up a little too soon.” A great voice wasted for 56 minutes.

This seems to be more a demonstration of singing ability than songwriting. The opening track Honey quickly dissolves into a series of "mmhmmm"s and "hoooeeeee"s, and every other track is identical. I see from the notes that this was heavily produced. Well, it doesn't show. Lay down a lid-tempo backbeat from Garage Band, add in some twinkly synths and hi-hat sounds, done. Why is this manufactured plastic on the list? Like another review says, this is like listening to an hour of music used in the credits for a low-budget straight-to-VHS Disney animation from the late 90s. I was originally going to give this one star, but then about halfway through I realised I had tuned it out completely, like traffic noise. Lacking the energy to even rouse negative emotions, I hereby award Mariah Carey's Butterfly two stars.

I doubt I'll ever listen to this again. Noting the immense impact MC has had, it's simply not my preference. Way too much 'oooo-oooo-ooo's' and generic backing tracks for my taste.

She - and this is news to you all I'm sure - is a very talented singer. She also - and this may shock you - uses that talent far too much far too often. It's very off-putting. Beyond that, it's yer basic non-interesting but not horrible pop.

At first, I was thinking that since I do like some individual moments on this album, but didn't necessarily need a whole hour at once, I'd rate it 3 stars. But then I realized I was only halfway through, not 40 or 45 minutes through as I'd thought. So in light of REALLY not needing the hour, down to 2 stars it goes.

I made it entirely too far into this album before realizing that every song sounded the same. Listen, she can obviously sing. But I don’t need a bunch of overall mediocre tracks where she showcases how many notes she can hit in a single word like 50 times every song.

I can hang with a Mariah Carey album (Daydream is one of the genre's giants), but this one just felt aimless. I couldn't find the melodies in the endless runs and all of the time spent in the whistle register. She spends at least 75% of this one whispering and moaning. It's all vibes and nothing to hold onto. Look no further than her cover of "The Beautiful Ones". If you weren't already familiar with the Prince masterpiece, could you make out the hook?

The Good: We are in el oh ve ee!!! The Bad: Not that kind of butterfly.. The Ugly: Knowing how it all ends… Mariah Carey is on the list… understandably, because, in the ‘90s, though we had some great rock based music, it was also the decade that R&B started spitting out one too many artists… Mariah being one of them. You can’t argue that she has a bad voice. She can do things with her vocal chords that view singers can repeat—five octaves… I don’t even know what an octave is! She’s sold 200 million records… geezus Every Christmas millions, tens of millions, maybe even hundreds of millions of people will hear her “All I Want For Christmas” and get all cheery as, well, duh, Christmas is near! Yet, with all those acolytes, this poor woman is only able of garnering a 2.45 rating… Either we are all wrong about the grandness of this album, or, more likely, Mr Dimery, again, managed to throw us a curve ball… At least he could have included the All You Want For Xmas song… 2* because she did what she did

Has anything in music aged worse than Diddy’s creepy whispers over the songs he produced? Honey is a banger but the soft “I like that”s in the background kind of ruin it for me. The only other song I liked was the one with Dru Hill that kinda sounded like Prince. Mariah is talented (and so goddamn hot) but most of her music doesn’t do anything for me at all.

I liked The Roof and Fly Away and was quite impressed by Breakdown, but I find it hard to stomach too much of the frillery

Nothing here really grabbed me

Honestly kinda dull

There are a few good singles on this record but hardly enough decent songs for a coherent and satisfying album. Despite it being largely ballads, Mariah overpowers the material, consistently performing at the intensity and volume of a fire engine. Very little storytelling and zero subtlety.

Very smooth, very bland not really my thing. Good enough but won’t listen again. Inoffensive.

I have never really listened to much Mariah. But now I understand where every mediocre aspiring female vocalist on The Voice got her inspiration. Even when Maria does those vocal things, I mostly don't care for it. That said, she has fantastic moments--the opening to My All is gorgeous, if kinda marred by weird percussion choices alas. I would give this 1 star except I think I gave 50 2 stars and this is better than 50.

A shade of pop that still means nothing to me. 😢

Other than her piercing vocals and a good song about being on a rooftop, this sounds like everything else that sounds like this. Stereotypical baby making music.

She IS pretty, and has a good voice. I just can't sit here and listen to a whole album. I'm 6 songs into it, and they all start to sound the same. I'm not going to finish this one.

Innovative. Really made way for my era of hip hop and r&b. I didn't like it but I appreciate it!

Gotta give credit where credit is due: she is equally skilled at both singing AND boring the hell out of me.

3/10 - she has a great voice but it’s a really boring album.

There are a couple of pretty good songs on here and it's cool that she samples Mobb Deep. That being said, some of the songs run together and it's a pretty tame record. 5/10

Have read many reviews along the lines of it being the same song for nearly an hour, how Mariah Carey essentially "moans scales" and how the songs are pretty dull. I agree with all of them. She has a fantastic voice but the music should be more than a vehicle for showing it off

Cant wait for Christmas

All listen to my techniques. Lots of vocal “look” at me, moans and leaps, that at no point seem there to serve the song only to serve the image of the diva. Sure she can sing, but nothing becomes a memorable song. All syrupy non song after song. Tedious ballad repeated something like 12 times, awful 2 Star.

All acrobatics and vocal gymnastics, Carey is the Nadia Comăneci of song. It's impressive from the point of view of what one voice can do, but did no-one think to say, "Mariah, just sing the tune."? Her singing style gave rise to a whole generation of women who gave us their melismatic performances on TV Talent shows, not being able to sing "Knees Up Mother Brown" without ripping up and down scales and arpeggios and showing all five octaves of their range in a single bar. She may consider this her Magnum Opus, but the moment I turned it off I had forgotten it. It's icecream music - enjoyable at the time, but not really solid fare that sticks to your ribs.

This album can't decide what it wants to be, and all I've discovered is what I don't want it to be.

She gets a dollar every time she does a scale

Maybe it was ground breaking at the time but after 20+ years of Rhiannas and Beyonce's it can't seem to hold its own
