An interesting listen. While I'll probably forget about it shortly and won't listen to any of these again, it was a cool experience while it was on
Aika ei ole järin hyvin tätä kohdellut. 2/5
Además de esa canción conocía This Corrosion.
It took them 1 minute into the first song to rip themselves off. It sounds a lot like "Deliverance" by The Mission UK. "Lucretia" had a nice base line. I liked this mostly because this was part of my high school years. I wasn't goth, and we all were pretty disdainful of those pretentious d-bags, but the music was pretty damn good, overall, despite being pretty repetitive. The big knock against these guys is that they were caught between trying to sound like The Cure, and figuring out their own identity: which is as goth as it gets. And it was also eye-rolling to hear the guy keep trying to sound like Bela Lugosi when he sings.
Yeah nah. I'm not into late 80s Goth rock. Too many gated drums and emotions.
Wasn't in the mood for this!
Some good stuff, some naff stuff, a slightly harsh 2
This felt extremely stereotypical and almost like a parody of oneself. That isn't to say it's bad, it's completely competent as an album, but everything just sounds like surface level 80s dark wave. Now, at the time I'm sure this was revolutionary as a darker sound in new wave, but now it feels like the bare minimum as to what someone would be playing if there was a soundtrack for the 80s. It just screams angst, but that angst is hard to take seriously with the cheesy synths and repetitive drum machine. Maybe if one of these songs alone was on a whole album that sounded different, then I'd be interested due to the darker tone, but instead I was just bored by the end. Maybe in the right mood, but I have no clue what that mood would be, and why I wouldn't pick something like Depeche Mode or Joy Division first.
This Corrosion was a fantastic centre point of an otherwise quite dreary album with an unfortunately muddy mix
New Wave met extra veel eyeliner.
So, like... does every newwave/darkwave/synthwave band just use the same singer? Is that why they all sound the same? Because, despite being serviceable electronic music, this was boring AF. Nothing new, nothing exciting, nothing unique. Just the same guy singing about the same stuff over a slightly more emo flavor of the same synths.
Could have saved time and listened to the shortest track nine times. Very monotonous. Made it thru thanks to a traffic jam and nothing more promising coming to mind
Forgettable 80s tunes
Some truly bog standard 80s synth wave/new wave. Your level of enjoyment with this really depends on how long you’ve been working through the list. I’m creating album 900, and I’ve definitely heard this exact album 50+ times now.
Not a fan 2/5
It flooded my ears with noise.
I like how the vocals are done: lots of dark tones. Some of the bass tracks are good. But the drums are from a machine. And I'm not a fan of 80s synth. It's a bit like Depeche Mode and the rest. "1959" is a good track. Nice piano. The vocal style works well, and no annoying synthetic drum beat. "Lucretia My Reflection" is the most radio-friendly track: good bass line, quality vocal arrangement, and it has a groove. I could have skipped the other songs - nothing original about any of these. Sisters of Mercy suffer the same problem as other groups in the same category: each song, album, and band sound just like the others.
Starts out with Russians, then rushin' waters. Fake shaky old man voice throughout. Where's the mercy?
Just what I've been looking for, a mid tear goth concept album about flooding. 2 Noah's arks out of 5 ⛵⛵
naaah
Too monotone, too long. Just didn't do it for me. I did like The Corrosion. Fun track, but didn't make up for the rest.
Not my style. It was pretty boring through the entire thing. 3.5/10
Absolute snoozefest.
I'll be honest, when I read the description I thought it had 1/5 written all over it. Normally I despise the drum compression and synth heavy music like this but these Sisters are doing it right. A lot of people talking about Lucretia - that one stood out to me at first too but by my third listen I was kind of over it. 1959 is a lovely little song that weirdly reminds me of Orville Peck? Without the vocal range of Orville. This Corrosion is a banger for sure, I would like that to be the backing track for my revenge montage. Floods 1 & 2 and the last two tracks don't really do much for me. Really enjoyable listen, this was a fun one!
Better than absolute 80s garbage I guess.
8th March 2023 Listened during the day while working in the office and finished in the airport the next day on the way to Naples. Grungy doom music, sounded like the hell music the guys in South Park use
60 seconds in… who thought this was a good idea? The saxophone was a real surprise.
interesting different from my usual music but alas i got bored
Hearing One song is fun 80’s punk. Listening to the whole album is torture.
It's not 'Bad" but I found it a bit dull. Not really for me.
Bad Bowie Copy - circa Black Star
Too much edge to my Rock n Roll.
All a bit one dimensional
A pretty weird and very 80s Esque album. With the whole album being the theme from thriller this album probably has a set group of listeners. The synths are heavily played and one song repeated itself for nine minutes. Safe to say this one wasn’t great. 3.9/10
Overall sound is a little too dark. Not my kind of music.
À little too dramatic to my taste. An apocalyptic ambiance that would make it a great movie music.
I went from "hmmm not bad" to "Christ I'm bored" in about 1.5 songs. What I assume is supposed to be atmospheric and moody is just as my Grandpa would say "Dull as duck shit". A yawning 2 stars.
This is like boomer goth music
Pretty 80s.
I find gothic rock in this style comically cheesy. Seems like it's trying so hard to be edgy and dark but at least today it's trite. Mostly the vocals are the reason it's so corny. Instrumentally it's competent but... yeesh.
I'm not a fan of this genre of music. I feel that is sounds cheesy and dreadful. I can appreciate that others may enjoy it. But it feels very dated to me.
Didn't do much for me
2.5/5
Very dark
Didn’t care much for it.
nah tried to get onboard but it's just bad rock with "atmosphere" which doesn't translate unless you're all in.
Not my style a little too dark and dreary
A bit tedious.
Was fine to put on Sometimes forgot to listen Nothing outstanding 4/10
Ogillade det... kändes väldigt långt.
This album exactly how I expected an 80s goth pop album to sound. I'm not a fan of 80s pop for the most part and this has too much of that era in its sound. I'd be interested to hear any of their later albums, and may give the band another try at some point.
Very odd, which is not a bad thing! Some songs sounded like rammstein covering Kenny Loggins, others like David Bowie fronting a particularly gloomy Echo & the Bunnymen, and one sounded like a piano ballad from some schlocky horror movie. I would never have found this on my own, and would not have expected it to sound like this based on what I had heard of the band before. Loses a star for not having a proper drummer.
It’s not unpleasant music, but also not very memorable at the same time. The songs kinda of blur into a cloud of hazey guitars and moody vocals. 4/10
I would have liked this more when I was, like, 19. Doesn't do much for me now.
Shitty 80s music. So moody. Bland and forgettable
Second half better than first. Not my kind of music. Highlight tracks: 4, 5, 6
Sounds like Joy Division, but in the boring mumbly way. They try to build gothic sonic soundscapes that build and grow and consume, but are usually not successful. Lucretia my Reflection does this the best. It builds and grows into a thumping rock beat. Then dips, before exploding once again, before fading out. It tells a good musical narrative. Versus 1959, nothing to grab on to. Wikipedia tells me this is Gothic Rock/Gothic Punk, which feels very apt. Highlights: Lucretia my Reflection
I do not advocate for bullying. But sometimes you can understand a bully's motive.
Thought it was fine. Some good moments I liked. I can see why some might enjoy it, but it's not really for me.
I listened. Kind of enjoyed but not entirely sure how to rate this album. Going with a 2 because I don't think I'd ever say, hey, put on SOM's Floodland.
A few good songs (This Corrosion and Dominion/Mother Russia are good), but definitely a product of its time and hasn't aged relatively well. 2.5/5.
odd mix of bowie and lame goth rock. not for me.
Nothing to write home about.
The soundtrack to Halloween no one asked for. There’s some good ideas here musically but it’s way too dramatic and over the top. See The Cure for how to do this style right without slipping into cheesiness.
The worst clash of emo, heavy metal and 80s
Started off strong but got a bit depressing by the end
Songs are not nearly interesting enough to be as long as they are. Bass lines are pretty good
generic 80s
overall thoughts: ngl, could not get into this at all. not my cup of tea I guess. songs weren't trash tho, drumming was pretty cool & the inclusion of a choir throughout some of the songs. 2.5/5.
This sucks and is super boring. At least they tried
bleck
When New Wave and Porto WMO just misses the boat. There’s not a lot of major impact or even memorable tracks.
Not bad. I liked more than I thought
meh.
very 80s already. might be rough. but at least its decent working music. i made it to song 8 two stars.
Enjoyed the start but my interest drifted in and out of this one too much. 2*
Can listen to it. Was nothing to write home about.
Repetive
Meh
no thanks
Hard listen 1.1/10 maybe in 1987 this was good but know its terrible
I really do not care for this era of music. Sorry.
You know whats worse than a bad album? A super boring album with no substance whatsoever. At least you can kind of laugh at a bad album, but i was just praying for this album to be over. Every song is a nothing burger and is way too long. The song Emma had some potensial, but even that song suffered from the same problems, not to mention the vocals sound like theyre supposed to be deep, but it just sounds forced.
Fucking dogshit
not for me
Meh. I love Vision Thing. Tried this on the stair machine & it just didn’t work.
I always worried that I could have been a great Goth in the 1980s because I loved the Cure. After listening to Floodland I realized I dodged a bullet. This is so predictably Goth - every song in a minor key, every chorus sung in octaves, choirs, vocals sung in a creepy commanding tone. I feel like I just listened to an alternate Lost Boys soundtrack.
Nahhhhhh This is boring goth music and I don't like it. Echo & the bunnymen started playing after this and I like them so much better LOL
Will try to get to it today
Im nkt a big fan classic rock
Do not like this style of rock.
From the cheesy cover art to the the big reverb on the drums to the super low register male vocals, this was so 80's it felt like a parody album.
Another 80s album that reminds me how lucky I am to have avoided living in that lost decade I genuinely dont understand how some of the drum sounds got so popular. There isnt a lot here that I appreciated. Flood II and The Corrosion were okay. 1.5 stars
Bad
This group’s Spotify description reads like Elon Musk wrote it (derogatory). “Not only are we dark English rock, we’re dark gothic English rock” Not offensive enough to turn off but boring enough to fade into the background.
Less than mediocre new wave
I’m going to invoke the old maxim, if you don’t have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
I remember this album from the Beavis and Butthead show. Every time they watched a video on the show and went, “huh huh huh huh huh huh …. These guys suck…huh huh,” the song they were listening to was definitely from this album.
If the Twightlight series came out in the 80s this would be the soundtrack.
As soon as I started listening I hated the drum sounds and couldn't get past it.
I’ve never heard SoM before and I’m not sure what they going for, but I wasn’t into it. I see them described as goth rock, but I find the gothic dressings of Black Sabbath or Bauhaus much more compelling. To me it just sounded like new wave that used the same synth for almost every track. I enjoyed “Corrosion” for a little bit, but that’s just because I deluded myself into thinking I was listening to The The (and then the choir kicked in).
god I love synth !!!!!!!!
When I first heard this in 1987 it was a fairly torturous listen but revisiting this 38 years later it’s a little bit worse.
Eh, emo 80s pop. It's okay.
Really bad
Not sure what the point of this music is or where it sits in anything to do with rock history. Pointless. Don’t think it adds anything to anything.
No.
new order for guys with top hats, black nail polish and stripey Tim burton shirts
I can’t deal with the 80s at the best of times. The words gothic do not help. Very not for me. On many levels.
All spectacle and no substance. Dragged down by a dull, thudding drum machine, this record is chock-full of predictable chord changes and singer Andrew Eldritch's unsuccessful attempts to imbue his bland lyrics with some sense of theatricality.
Boring.
Horrible
Synthesizers heavy goth pop/rock album that is OK some of it even good if you can get through the in-your-face constant one-dimensional ONE TWO pow pow beat of the bloody synthesizer as it's almost center stage in every single song to the point it all starts sounding the same ONE TWO pow ONE TWO pow ONE TWO pow ONE TWO pow...
Not for me. 1/5
Not my trophy of troff of swill
pass
DNF
Going into this project I typecasted myself as someone who is not into 80s music, but wanted to see if that was still true with a more mature ear. IMO this album was typical 80s and I didn’t enjoy it. So I guess I’m still a 80s hater. The 1959 song was so tough to get through. It was weirdly slow, I didn’t expect that.
Rather forgettable. NOTHING here really stands out. Weird.
Never heard of this group, but it immediately sounds like 80s Bowie. They definitely owe Bowie some money for the way they sound. If the Crash Test Dummies hit in 1985 they would be this band. I liked 1959 quite a bit. I liked This Corrosion. I would like it if every song didn't have the exact same drum beat, but in 1985 that was illegal so I understand. Overall this was a chore.
My least favorite album so far. Just about everything of the 80s sound I don’t like. It’s still listenable as I imagine most of the albums on this list would be, but I will probably never choose to revisit it.
Very generic goth post
F@*^%$G awful.
Meh
I didn't like this at all. 3/10
Dark rock from the 80s isn't something I was expecting today. Its not something I'm familiar with and after today I probably wont be again. Its very monotone and tries to create an atmosphere that just doesn't work for me. Its just boring.
Too bad I was already a fan after hearing "Body Electric" on a John Peel radio show at the time of the 7" release (yeah I know, old guy bragging etc., but true), so something like a not-quite-day-one-but-almost fan. I stayed loyal up to the first album or rather up until "Temple Of Love" made them huge but also started to cater for a fairly basic rock sound that lacked the edge of the first releases. Basically I was totally underwhelmed by "The First And Last And Always" and couldn't be bothered with anything they did after that. But also in retrospect I cannot see much merit in their second album, sorry. The Sisters (or should we say, Andrew Eldritch) never really delivered an album worthy of a 1000-records-before-you-die list, unless you want to count their early-releases-"Some Girls Wander By Mistake"-compilation from 1992, which I would prefer to their regular albums any day.
I just hate the drum machine use here.
sounds like the soundtrack goth music of a cheesy vampire c-movie from the early 80s. And like the do in vampire movies they suck.
Not good.
Didn’t enjoy
The epitome of a very average 80s group.
Why does this sound like an 80’s rock twilight soundtrack? It’s vampy
Not for me
Nope. Hard pass. Love early gritty works by Sister Of Mercy, but as soon as they got sanitized by eighties sonic aesthetics, I lost all interest in them. See also the three reviews topping this section. The description of the first is spot on -- even of the 4/5 grade isn't. The grade of the second one is closer to the mark. And the grade of the third is perfect, along with the description. Funny that another (rather negative) review compares one track to Pixies' "Tame", by the way. The starting points of the two songs are indeed the same. It's just that what follows is WAY different. Nobody has ever really said that a Pixies song sounded like Sisters Of Mercy in 1989. It's now that you can say that a Sisters Of Mercy song sounds like Pixies. Even if it was released *before* it. If that's not proof that Pixies will endure in public memory and Sisters Of Mercy won't, I don't know what is. 🤷 1/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums 6/10 for more general purposes (5 + 1) Number of albums left to review: around a hundred, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 443 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 264 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 322 (including this one(
This is a joke, right? Too many albums from the Brits and the 80s on this list.
After hearing this I almost felt the need drink someone else’s blood. Not for me thanks
A bit too emo for my liking.
It’s like doom metal and new wave had a baby. But even more ugly and fucking irritating than I even dared to expect.
Groupe inconnu. =>1/5
The reviews are the best part so far. Groan. The comments in the reviews are the best part.
no
Terrible 80s synth goth pop Bowie-ish false manly voice
kinda meh, did not enjoy, rather listen to some Eminem, way better flow then this.....
I'm sorry I can't
Couldn't get through this record. Totally dark and depressing without any discernable hooks -- just negative energy lyrics. It's like these guys were trying to be Joy Division without the energy or talent.
Not good. This is why people hate 80s music.
Sounds very 80’s. I can’t get into it
Nothing groundbreaking. Also why are they called sisters of mercy when there are no women? Makes no sense.. Very low effort, music is meh, singing is not really singing more like reciting
Sad that I can't give lower than one star. Rip-off Depeche Mode and I hate Depeche Mode.
1.5 Sounded like a goth parody band, and not in a good way
doomy crap
The sound of distopia!
Enjoy the puppet show
I am not sure how much more of mediocre 80s pop i can take.
I can't stand the lead voice. Quintessential 80s mumble singing. 1/5 could not finish.
Nix für mich.
Darkwave outfit that nearly resembles its own parody. The mother russia rain down praise is nearly unbearable, nowadays.
Überhaupt nicht meins. Kann nichts damit anfangen. DNF 1.0/10
Långsam rock, inget i min smak
No my jam.
Unimaginative. Pretentious.
Good fucking god that was painful. Never again...
This was cheesy as hell. The singing was terrible and all of the drums sounds are artificial from a sampler. I feel like I could have made this album in Electronic Music class with Mr. T in high school.
No no
1. dominion - 0 2. flood - 0 3. lucretia - 1 4. 1959 - 1 5. thiz corrizion - 0 6. flood 2 - 1 7. like the znouu - 1 8. never land - 0
not terribly impressed. lacked "musicality" to me
Oh my god this is boring.
Big dracula vibes. I had no desire to listen to this more than was completely necessary. Again, I don't doubt any artistic qualities the album has, but it's a no from me.
Tohto mi stačilo pár sekúnd. Ďakujem, neprosím
Good halloween music... but not my cup of tea!
Not a fan
Awful
not for me
Nope
I don't recall this band or their music, but because I was a teen and in my early 20s in the 80s, this style is very familiar, so there's a slight sense of nostalgia in the sound for me. Musically, though, I wasn't that interested in this album.
I hate Depeche Mode and by the transitive property, this too. Glum synthesizer music with no soul (and perhaps no actual musicians either). Never need to hear this again.
FART
I don't hate it that much But this is not worth anyones time 1 Definitely has some vibes that reccurs in the vaporwave that I love. But eeeehhhh
Yet another album that might (emphasis on might) been of some interest to someone back in the day, but sounds way outdated and irrelevant these days.
Couldn’t even finish this garbage
Why 80’s? Why!!!!! Just so fucking cliche and lame
The whole dark wave/goth rock genre is perhaps another genre that is overly represented on this list. This is not for me, and honestly is just kind of straight up bad. Nothing very redeeming about it.
bore
Too weird.
I’m a sucker for the 80s glam rock stuff, but didn’t get much of a chance to listen to this album. How good did it seem from what I heard? 6/10. How likely am I to seek it out again? 3/10.
Never understood this stuff - despite hailing from the heart of dark gothic stuff. it's joyless miserable posturing
ALL OF THE MOST DIRE, WORST THINGS ABOUT THE 80'S ARE RIGHT HERE. CHEESY KEYS, DREADFUL TUNELESS TALK-SINGING, DRUM MACHINE BEATS, STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE. FUCKING AWFUL. GOTH DICKHEADS. Can't give 0, so it's a kicking-and-screaming 1 star.
For people who tell everyone Robert Pattinson is their favorite Batman, but really prefer Ben Affleck if they're being honest with themselves. If you feel like 1959, that might suggest you're a closet racist.
If you're into quintessential 80's drums and weird choir backed rock you may like it.
nope
I don't believe goth industrial etc is that important. 1001 seems to insist that it is, and that we understand its pioneers (Bauhaus), prophets (Nick Cave) and bowel movements (Sisters of Mercy). D
Its like if Depeche Mode made a halloween album that sucked.
Not my style.
This already sounds very 80s right from the start. Yeah, I don’t really like this. It’s not my cup of tea. It’s not so much 80s as…heavy metal?
Goth New Order. Not for me.
No lo escuché porque no me gustó. Además no está completo en spotify. Siguiente pregunta.
I couldn't finish it
Includes all of the worst aspects of New Wave - annoying drone vocals, flat compositions, annoying synth choices, and arrangements that go absolutely nowhere
1.5
This is was bad. The only mildly enjoyable part was the last song. Worst one yet.
Wow I really did not like this album at all.
Garbage
