Reviews (page 5 of 7)

I like the atmosphere. However, there’s not enough variation for the length of the songs. The singer sings below his normal vocal range. It sounds uneven. Favorite song: this corrosion

great bass lines but soo brooding

Hmmm…I guess. But probably won’t listen again.

I just can’t tell if I like this or not, it’s interesting but yet boring 🤷🏻‍♂️

Better than expected

Actually enjoyed that

Really interesting. First time hearing such a sound. Will come back to it definitely.

Best Song: Dominion/Mother Russia. An undeniably catchy chorus, and a good use of choir vocals. Worst Song: 1959. I truly don't how anyone can like these dorky piano ballads that all these 80s pop singers try to do. Overall: A typically 80s combination of decently catchy dance tracks and exceedingly annoying ones where the singer seems content to monotonously drone over the the beat.

To give him credit and slightly defend the album cover, you are certainly able to judge the album by the cover on this one. Neither are very good, but both are unique. A lot of moaning and groaning. I don’t hate it, but I don’t think it’s really that good. 3/5

Lyder meget godt, jeg er dog mere til The Cure når vi snakker goth 80'er rock

I like the gothic rock style and some of the songs were pretty good. It just all sounds the same and I got bored towards the end.

Pretty good

I'd never been interested in this band - too goth. But it wasn't bad. Favourite track, Lucretia My Reflection.

Bit weird. Was alright as background music Songs were quite long but it wasn't bad 3 ⭐️

Not bad. I'm okay with the sound but it isn't one that I seek out.

More sax than I expected for goth

A decent Goth rock album. I did dance to This Corrosion at the clubs back in the day but the rest of the album is not something I would get back into again although I was impressed with the dedication and sound l.

Not as direct as first last but still has some good sounds. Does it try to sound the same with a different cast???

Really did sound like an 80s album. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect going into this one, and I’m still come coming out of it. It has some cool ideas with the choir, but a lot of it feels played out. Not a lot of feelings on it otherwise. Standouts: Dominion/Mother Russia and This Corrosion.

It just makes me think of Simon Pegg in ‘World’s End’ so I love it. It’s pretty…I don’t know if they make words for what this sounds like, but know that the cover conveys it perfectly.

Very 1980s sounding goth/new wave album, first I thought I wouldn't like this at all but then I quite liked their originality and their some good musicianship. I wouldn't listen to it again but it was an okay listen.

Just another pretty typical mid-80's album

A weird one that was not what I expected - I was thinking Sisters Of Mercy were more heavy metal if I’m honest! But I did enjoy the vibe of this and there were some decent tracks on here! A high 3 rating

This is the most European 80s thing on the planet. And that isn't a bad thing. It isn't a great thing either.

It brings back memories of my dark gothic days. A weird time that only began for me well after the release of this album, but then lasted a while. In this respect, the Sisters were a rediscovery for me. Nice to see them here again. I'm curious to see if I still like the album as much. Ok, now that I've listened to the album again, I realize that the fascination has disappeared. I still like a few things. Dominion and This Corrosion are among them. But the album won't be integrated into my daily stream. 3/5

Does what it says on the tin

3 - I listened, I have almost no thoughts

Can't say I've ever been all that interested to immerse myself in goth rock. If I need some brood and darkness with post-punk guitars, why not just go with Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees? I don't know, goth rock and coldwave/darkwave always comes off as boring to me. A sound meant for bouncing off a dark concrete corridor with a fluorescent light flickering on the ceiling. The first half of the record lacks some energy. Personally, I found the last 20 seconds of "Lucretia My Reflection" as the most engaging. The drums and backing vocals (from The Gun Club's Patricia Morrison) for "This Corrosion" are pretty fun, however. I can picture this song being played in the end credits for an 80s exploitation horror flick. Cinematic quality from Jim Steinman? Groundbreaking! 'Floodland' may be one of those records that's actually backloaded, with "Flood II" adding some extra warmth to the otherwise cold atmosphere overall. But then we're back into the concrete undertow with the final two tracks. At least the album cover looks how the album sounds. B

Lovely memories!!

Not as bad as I was expecting.

For sure good dark rock.

Interesting Brit sound. Liked it overall but a bit dark

I almost like Dominion, This Corrosion

niet slecht... maar ook niet onmisbaar

Feels like a cross between the cure and Miami vice. Very breathy serious vocals. Not a bad vibe but no standouts for me

Floodland by Sisters of Mercy is different from other albums! The vibes are super gothic and dark wave, and the fact that it was so different made it enjoyable--but it's still good regardless. I bet this album can be considered dreary, but I found it riveting and fun. The choral intro to "This Corrosion," the piano accompaniment in "1959," the lyrics and topic in "Mother Russia," the consistent deep vocals. The musical choices weren't expected at all, and the music was good benefited from those unusual choices. 3.5

Not my thing. So 80s you couldn't get more cheesy. It is so cliched it's good since it sums everything up that is Goth and trashy. Because of that I can't bring myself to give it a bad score.

(the night of) July 31, 2024 HL: "Lucretia", "This Corrosion", "Driven Like the Snow", "Never Land" Points for being big & gothic & ridiculous; points taken for the canned 80s drums & talk-sung vocals that I feel take away from the atmosphere these songs could have possessed. I bet the Sisters would be better live 3.5

Surprise! Never heard of this band and enjoyed their Ministry like sound.

Im sure this is an amazing album if you’re into goth. But I’m not, so I guess it was just ok. I’m also not super nostalgic for songs that are excessively 80s, which this is. Although I have heard of the Sisters of Mercy, I’ve never actually listened to them, at least not knowingly. I don’t feel I’ve missed out on anything.

Don't really know what to say on this. It's fine, I guess. Not really my scene, and I can't understand whose scene it would actually be. It feels like I'd only ever put this on as a joke. That said, it's a pretty well-executed joke.

Intrigued by this. Very much like the cure. Will have to give a few more listens

Depeche Mode meets the cure meets Castlevania

It’s like the Cure, Jr! And I love The Cure.

Started out strong but got pretty tired of the voice and the lenght of each song

This style of music goes down very easy for me, but I can't say I will remember any of it tomorrow.

I know of Sisters of Mercy and was definitely interested when I saw their name pop up. I don't know if that excitement put me in the right mood, but man I loved the opener Dominion / Mother Russia. Lucretia My Reflection (song 3) was also outstanding and This Corossion was pretty good too. Aldritch has vocals similar to Ian Curtis of Joy Division but there's a bit more tempo and fun to Sisters of Mercy, giving them a different goth rock sound. Naming your drum machine is a strange move, but I was cool with Doktor Avalanche. All that said, it felt like every other song was just okay (Flood I and II a bit meh, 1959 too). This album is better than a 3 but I don't know if it's a 4. Might be one of those I wish I had rounded up later.

This would make a good soundtrack for The Lost Boys. So very 80s. Favorite tracks: Most of them sound identical, but This Corrosion caught my attention, even though it's also SO VERY 80s. First thought at the beginning of Never Land: "Wait? Is this When the Levee Breaks? Nope." Moving on...

I get that this is a definitive goth album, but it's not a very exciting one. Just another band that you hear and think "Did these guys make TMS?"

Pretty nice if you get the humour

Very clear inspiration for bands like Type O Negative. I like the edgy, early industrial stuff though

Weird gothic Bowie at times?

Super 80s. There are some decent parts to this, but overall I'd say it was a bit boring.

Very 80’s very gothic, enjoyed this, probably worth at least one listen, but can’t see me coming back to it.

okay sochli herteredepeche mode? harde shit? chli extra aber finds no recht geil. oke isch en chli lange seeehr cool tönende song mit mega überdratischer leadstimm wos aber au interessant macht. sehr geil. OK, so now I've heard three goth albums on this list. Who edits this book? This is an OK album, but its weird that of all the musical subcultures goth is represented more than something like ska or black metal or electro. 3/5

Great goth album! So stand out tracks for sure. My only downer on this album was that I kept thinking it would get heavier like a Type O Negative album. Still pretty solid.

dominion lucretia my reflection this corrosion colours

This screams the 80s to me. Drum machines electronic synthesizer and Moody lyrics. Not as good as some of the classic bands, but certainly listenable.

It must be my morning brain talking but Floodland went in one ear and out the other. It started off well then it lost me to the point where I cannot remember what the songs sound like. It's my fault, though, I was not in the space needed for this album's attention. I'm sure it's good. I'll check again another time. Favorites: Dominion/Mother Russia, Lucretia My Reflection, 1959, This Corrosion, Driven Like the Snow.

Definitely an interesting dark wave gothic album, with a droning tone of lyrics and crunchy guitars. Not an all time favorite but not bad.

Rather dark, echoey and futuristic, but good. Has a Midnight Oil vibe. Best song is This Corrosion. Liked the sound and the album (2.7*s)

Ok, I did not expect that at all. The opening track has an 80's sax solo and then chants "Mother Russia" for 3 whole minutes and somehow I'm into it. This album is so goth it burns you, but like in ice. I didn't know I needed to hear this but I'm glad I did. It's moody and upbeat at the same time, it's dark but has good energy, it's borderline silly but also serious. It's like the vampire version of David Byrne joined Depeche Mode. Very intriguing.

Something about it is a little hokey but for some reason I kinda liked it. There's nothing special about it at all but a few of the songs are catchy and fun enough to work. Shoutout to Doktor Avalanche, drum machine extraordinaire. 2.81 stars

Good New Wave, not up there with the real heavy hitters but it's definitely in the rotation

very ambient and reminds me of the cure, i did enjoy the variety of sounds still not really enough for four stars but id rather be harsh than give em out willy nilly

This Goth kids at my high school (all five of them) really liked this back in the day. I think it's a fine example of the genre. Doesn't get me moving, though.

Enjoyably dark and 80s

Goth rock is a new one on me. There's bits I liked but the production & lyrics are very '80's & haven't aged well. A very generous 3

"Floodland" by Sisters of Mercy is a gothic rock classic that showcases the band's dark and brooding sound. Released in 1987, the album features iconic tracks like "This Corrosion" and "Dominion/Mother Russia," characterized by deep vocals, haunting melodies, and dramatic instrumentals. While "Floodland" is praised for its atmospheric quality and influential role in the gothic rock genre, some critics find its overall sound to be slightly dated. The album's heavy use of synthesizers and drum machines, while innovative for its time, may not resonate as strongly with modern listeners. Overall, "Floodland" remains a significant album in gothic rock history, earning it a respectable 3 out of 5.

B- Dominion/Mother Russia 3 Flood I 3 Lucretia My Reflection 3 1959 3 This Corrosion 5 Flood II 3 Driven Like The Snow 3 Never Land (A Fragment) 2 Who would've f***ing thought?! NOT me. No? Okay, me. PSYCH.

I'm big into my goth rock/post punk, so I was disappointed to find I didn't enjoy this as much as I wanted to. Something about the vocals did not work for me - it was missing a spark. The songs, despite all sounding different - which is something I can appreciate, and sets it apart from being purely a mid album, all blend into one for me bar one. They aren't bad, just...forgettable. HOWEVER: Lucretia my reflection was a solid tune. Well deserved with the 30M+ listens on spotify. Great bassline. A stand out track that prevented me from fully disliking the album. On the whole though, not the best.

The fact that 50% of the ever-present members of Sisters of Mercy are a drum machine called Doktor Avalanche says a lot about just how 80s this album sounds. As it turns out, dark and atmospheric 80s electro goth rock with communist vibes is actually a really cool listen. I like it. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Lucretia My Reflection Date listened: 16/04/24

the singles are spectacular but there’s a lot of undercooked filler to be sure

Never been a big a fan. Still not. But I enjoyed.

Didn't expect to be familiar with any of this coming in, but I've definitely heard "Dominion"/"Mother Russia" before (in the in-game radio for GTA IV of all places). If anything, the sound is mostly consistent throughout. The reverb drums really grab you immediately. A few duds keep the overall experience down, though.

Not terrible by any means, it had its moments but I'd be ok never hearing it again. 2.5/5

Rock gótico. Ni fu ni fa.

Kind of cool in an 80’s goth way. Kind of industrial sounding. But just not really my thing. Giving it a solid 3/5 though.

3. Although I imagine if I were in a different mood it would be heigher. 80s electro synth pop

Sort of ok

Yeah not bad

A cool gothic rock album that ticked all the boxes of the genre. Best: Dominion/Mother Russia Worst: Flood II

Cool sound, but nothing to revisit.

Captures the 80s vibe decently. Not super remarkable though.

A little too moody for me. Similar to Depeche Mode

I honestly thought I was going to enjoy this more than I did. The production really hasn’t worn well

not my thing

It's like Devo and Depeche Mode had a baby.

So Goth it hurts. Moody and mechanized.

This was super moody and I'm here for it. "Burn Down Hot Topic" vibes from top to bottom.

Starke Ballade: „1959“, „Lucretia My Reflection“ und das großartige „The Corossion“ sind die Muntermacher des Albums. OK! 3/5

80s goth rokk er besta goth rokkið. Sándið er óumflýjanlegt.

A little weird for my taste.

Not something I'll be in a hurry to revisit, but not bad.

Very 80s

Super 80s, very goth

It’s goth rock but listenable. Distinct 80s flair but it’s not bad. Doubt I’d listen again though

way cooler than i originally thought it would be. probably a high 3 but definitely flirting with 4

Ooo Depeche Mode vibes. I listened to this on a walk and enjoyed the gothic/darkness of it. Pretty solid instrumentals. I really liked Flood II.

Some overly long tracks, but at times enjoyable

fave track: lucretia my reflection final thoughts: i dunno i thought i would like this a lot more than i did but a lot of it fell flat for me :/

More engaging than I was expecting, a pleasant throwback to 1980's rock/synth pop. Too many single idea songs here, though, drawn out for far too long. And maudlin. SO. MAUDLIN.

Cool sort of dark new wave sound, but unfortunately none of the songs really went anywhere. It was just kind of the same drums and synths, wasted opportunity in my opinion

I enjoyed this more than I expected. Something about the dated (vintage?) synth sounds resonated with me.

I'm traveling right now and so I was unable to listen to this closely. having said that, the production on this album was a bit distracting. but i would have liked to listen more closely.

The Sisters of Mercy have a heaviness I don't experience with other similar bands of the time (The Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus) and I guess that's why I can't get my groove on with them. While the album was a bit of a chore to get through it did remind me why I like this project. It helped me clarify the new wave bands I do like and helped me differentiate between them. Before this project I put Joy Division, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie And The Banshees, et al all in the same bucket. Not anymore! 2 is too low/3 too high. but it's Christmas so there. I will say I thought they had a great band name!

Sisters of Mercy knew exactly what style they were going for, and they rocked it. Dark, haunting synth rock with low, foreboding, almost monotone vocals. Memorable bass riffs and solid instrumental expertise. It's not exactly my style, though. The synths are heavily overused, creating a very dated sound a la A Momentary Lapse of Reason (which is weak for a similar reason). The choruses are often an intensified, faster version of the verses, which might bode well for live performances but not so much for album close-listening. My favourite track was This Corrosion because it sounded the least like the others: a more light-hearted, standard rock style.

Kinda sounded like it should be an alt-movie soundtrack, didn’t dislike but not super my thing

Back in the day I wouldn't have given these guys the time of day, because Robert Smith and The Cure were the legendary goth rock group, and still very much are. Sisters of Mercy were a resurgence of goth rock and their sound was extremely samey between tracks. That said, I actually found I enjoyed listening to the album, I'd even choose yo play a couple of the tracks again, so they have grown on me over the years.

lmao. 80s goth kids act like this was some type of new music, or cooler than the rest of the '80s' music. It's literally just 80s pop with a deep voice guy talking a lot. It's not bad or anything. 2.8.

A few really good songs. A couple really 80s songs.

I've never heard the genre called Gothic Rock, but I liked some of them in this album. It has a unique vibe and it’s one and only.

Not bad, but i vibed more with others. Has a dark gothic atmosphere. Could get better after a few more listens. Still, I liked others more 5/10.

I’ve always heard people describe David Bowie as being influential and I guess I believed it without really knowing it for sure. But listening to this list has definitely confirmed that for me. Bowie is the #1 artist I find myself comparing other artists to when describing their style. For Sisters of Mercy, it’s the dramatic vocals that sound like Bowie. But actually the first band that jumped to mind was The Cure. They’ve got that same dark, reverb-heavy goth sound. This is good. I’m not so drawn to it that I’ll seek out more from the band but I might give it another spin when I’m more in the mood for it.

3/5 had some oomf, but not enough

Meh…

Some classic goth club hits, some very boring

Hardcore 80's synth. Perfect for a vampire movie

The moment you hear that snare drum, you know this was made in the 80s. I can never understand why everyone in the 80s suddenly decided to make their snare drums sound like this, its like being repeatedly punched in the face. Although with that said, I think the songs weren't too bad.

Niet slecht, maar ook niet super

This is ok. For me it suffers from being too much like Joy Division/New Order but trying to be cool & standoffish. I can see some appeal but I'd rather listen to the thing that's full of life. music: (⌐■_■).

This one is more fun than it has any business being. It sounds exactly like its cover, in a good way. I never got much into gothy stuff but maybe I could.

Not super memorable.

first listen yawn

Goth plays poppier today than it did in its heyday, even sort of innocent."Dominion" and "Lucretia" and "Flood II" and "Driven Like Snow" have few affectingly moody moments, but too often the synths and drum beats produce the opposite of deep or sinister – sounding tinny, canned, feckless. The backing vocals and chorale moments liven things up here and there, with a church-y feel but it all sounds like playacting. "This Corrosion" is "Louie, Louie" for the black lipstick set. "1959" is obviously a rip-off of Spinal Tap's "Lick My Love Pump," with piano by what sounds like a first-year student just done learning "Chopsticks." Edwards Scissorhands would be the Sisters' brother, no? The Cure would work out to be 5x the band. Rounding up only because of fond memories of a particular Goth lovely who was fond of this band.

I love the goth rock sound, and this album really nails it. I feel like some of the songs overstay their welcome though, and some aren’t as memorable. I think if I keep listening to it though I’ll start to appreciate it more over time.

Favourite tracks: Driven like the snow Lucretia my reflection

This band kind of reminds me of the Cult and I liked it. Floodland was n album whose vocal style really appeals to me with a little bit of a gothy twist.

I found the Sisters of Mercy's gothy darkness to be try-hard, over the top, and annoying. And yet sometimes I liked the songs. But apparently Andrew Eldritch was known as the "Godfather of Goth," so I guess there is a trailblazing authenticity there. I'm not sure that makes things better, though. In that case Eldritch (real name Andrew William Harvey Taylor) may shoulder much of the blame for four subsequent decades of cringiness. But most hilariously, Eldritch agrees with me! "Since the early 1990s, Eldritch has publicly rejected associations with the goth subculture. He describes the Sisters of Mercy as humanist, modernist, and implies he wants nothing to do with goth, stating: 'it's disappointing that so many people have in all seriousness adopted just one of our many one-week-of-stupid-clothes benders.' He also notes: 'I'm constantly confronted by representatives of popular culture who are far more goth than we, yet I have only to wear black socks to be stigmatised as the demon overlord.'

This album highlights an interesting transition period for the technology with which consumers consumed music. Floodland was released on vinyl, cassette, and compact disc. The past, present, and future of music media (in the late 80s). I listened to the vinyl version, not realizing it until the end. So that begs the question of which version is the “real” version of the album? Is there one? Shouldn’t an “album” be the same no matter what medium it is on? Is Floodland even an “album”? Is Floodland (Vinyl) really the “album”? And some of the songs are different lengths and many are different mixes even if they are the same length. What gives? As for the music, I like the dark, synthy stuff and I’m not so high on the gothic rock influences.

Some gothic rock mixed with an 80s sensibility. Nice, even if some of the tracks are unnecessarily long. 3/5

Vampire rock at its best!

epic sound

If the mood is right, which it is on this rainy workday, this album hits pretty well. Love the production of it. It’s certainly not subtle, but I would not expect that from this band.

Most 80s thing ever

Yeah, great music, irritating voice. I probably had the wrong idea about Sisters of Mercy because their name is quite silly, but actually they reminded me a bit of Jesus and Mary Chain, which is about as high as praise comes.

Although I recognized the band's name, I never listened to them as I thought gothic rock is kind of dark. However, this album is surprisingly listenable! While the lead singer's voice sounds like many others in the genre, it works. I liked "Dominion"/"Mother Russia", "Lucretia My Reflection" and "This Corrosion". No real dislikes.

Good but a tad overrated in my books. You can hear they were going for something really ambitious with this one with all these arrangements and the bombastic darkwave production, but some it comes across as a little awkward for me. It sounds big, but the songs themselves aren't really impressive, they're only sugar-coated. Anyway, there are still plenty of good moments to be found here but I don't think this is the monument some people claim it is.

I'm a big fan of goth rock, coldwave, etc., but I never really got into Sisters of Mercy. The idea is great, but the 80s synth vibe just sticks the band to their time and didn't age as good as Bauhaus did, for example.

A nice goth rock album, but that lacks a little something to me to make it stand out from other albums of this specific style. The song "1959" might contains the worst soulless piano tone I've ever heard, so bad, 'cause the song is well written.

muitos BOPS

This was similar to the new Depeche Mode album. A bit dark, but kinda fun.

Pretty good! Not a huge fan of the vocals though.

What a journey with this album haha! I hated the start to the point where I couldn't listen to the full track for tracks 2-4. It was super gothic new wave which I guess is their signature sound?? Not my bag at all. Then I loved 1959, it was more Nick Cave vibes, the piano style was really nice even with the 80s synth effects on it. I also enjoyed This Corrosion, which was more up-beat and reminded me of the Footloose soundtrack which is the side of 80s music which I love too much. Makes me want to dance and have a great time hahaha. Now we are coming towards the end stages in the last 3 tracks and I'm back to meh-ville. Boring, over-dramatic at best and giving me anxiety at worst. Such a mixed album for me.

This was absolutely fine. Listened on a run in Kent and it was a good accompaniment and felt soooo 80s. A bit OTT and silly in some ways but overall I did like it

Ah I guess this was fine, just sounded like so much 80s moody synth stuff, nothing special but not bad

3/5 Best: Dominion / Mother Russia Worst: 1959

Yup, that’s goth rock. 6/10

Typically 80s alternate rock. Got massive Lost Boys vibes with the drums and guitar

A little underwhelming.

overall ok, but quite repetitive and monotone

Cool sound, but becomes dull by the end. The first half was dynamic with great production and songs, but it just didn’t maintain the momentum.

While this was not for me at all, I think it executed its mission. If I was a goth vampire in the 80s, how could this not be my soundtrack? I will never listen to this again but I can see why someone else would like it.

Very 80s dated gothic rock from a bitter vampire man. In a good way.

Dark & stormy

me gustó bastante la vdd igual tranka ponele que 7.5/10

Well produced but very samey. I guess with this new wave stuff your either into the energy or you're not, I think most of us hearing it for the first time 49 years later are probably not.

Genuinely surprised at how much I liked this. Had always dismissed Sister's of Mercy as being goth nonsense but I liked this album

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: This corrosion

Based on this and Prettyhatemachine, I am assuming goth originated in new wave somehow.

Pasty faced and massive of hair, the band enlist a drum machine and the occasional hand of Jim Steinman to add some more pomp to their misery. Epic in parts, not quite in others - there are better goth albums out there but this one is definitely worth listening to. Best Tracks: Dominion/Mother Russia; Lucretia My Reflection; The Corrosion

Gootti!

Kind dig it. It's like a goth Talking Heads. Pretty clear where their influences are. Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, The Cure. I can't quite give it a 4 but it was pretty close.

I do appreciate goth 80's post-punk, though this particular flavor is a little light on melody and heavy on snare (wow. Those are some reverby snares) for my taste.

cracker the extra version of Some Kind of Stranger!

I have zero experience or understanding of "goth" industrial type stuff. I assume this is like, a tentpole of the genre. I liked it, but I don't know that I'd request it.

3 stars

Darkwave is such a great genre name. Shame this is mostly a bit bland and edgy

Gave me a type o negative vibe, not bad.

Wow, is this ‘80s or what? I feel like this entire album could be the soundtrack to a Clive Barker made-for-TV movie about gothic vampires. From what I read, this band doesn’t even have a drummer! It’s a drum machine named Dokter Avalanche. I find that hilarious. Let’s see…. Synth on every track? Check Songs which are almost entirely made of digitized synth percussion? Check Affected, cheesy ‘80s vocals? Check Choir-like female backup vocals? Check Trash-can drums? Check Drums that sound like a basketball hitting a school gym floor? Check Midi ballad? Check Final thoughts: catchy but gets old really quickly. Not bad, but not good. But then again, I’m not an ‘80s goth vampire so…

Interesting dark quality to this one. Kind of a mix between Tears for Fears and early Nine Inch Nails. Love that high-impact, high-reverb drum sound. Quintessential 80’s. Probably won’t listen again, but enjoyed a few tracks.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Lucratia was a great song!

Never heard any of this and I will be honest, (I might go to hell for this) I kinda like it. I hope my pastor doesn’t read this review.

I have a soft spot for the 80s sound. I love the gothic tone of their music. Overall it's okay - Lucretia through Flood II are solid but the rest of it is forgettable.

I must admit I enjoyed this more than I expected. The first song is garbage, some typical extremely 80s junk where the snare is so compressed the roadies probably kept it in their pockets. However it improves steadily, peaking with This Corrosion which is actually a pretty damn good song. At first the length of it felt a bit much but honestly it doesn't get old on me as much as some of the other songs on the album that are half the length. Besides the first track, each song has something to enjoy, whether it's a decent chord progression, decent guitar playing, good bass, or good keyboards. The drums are boring and fairly shitty, but they're a drum machine so pretty par for the 80s. I don't like the singer's voice and the melodies are usually pretty bland, a definite low point in their sound. Definitely pleasantly surprised here.

The exception to the "don't judge a book by its cover" rule? The album art for this is just so... on the nose. I didn't hate it at all actually but it is capital G Goth at its most stentoriously self-serious. Though possibly in on the joke? If so, with an amazing poker face about it.

It definitely had an 80s feel to it. It wasn't a great album, but it wasn't awful. It was better than a 2 but not really a 3. I will round up.

Cheer up guys! You're in a band!

Muy 80, me gusta la oscuridad y profundidad se algunos sonidos

Interesting...

It was ok. Not much wrong with it but didn't really resonate with me. 3/5

Rock gótico no melhor estilo 80s. Relativamente gostoso mas não achei muito notável

Another of those where you can understand why it's in the 1001, even though it's not my usual choice. Good listen, though probably wouldn't listen a second time

Felt very 80s! Some good electronica and synth work going on.

Industrial 80's sound is cool, unlike any of the songs. Would not listen again

Kun sen äänen kuulee, on hankala sukeltaa syvälle soundiin. Jos pääsee sen yli eikä mieti sitä lukua liikaa niin aivan uskomaton albumi.

Grew on me. Besides, shades at night?!?

Pop. Un poco aburrido.

Not bad

this corrosion 5 rest of the album 3

Very Goth, reminded me of Depeche Mode

3/5. I heard the first few notes and thought I wasn’t going to like it but it has definitely grown on me. It does get a little old later in the album but at least three of the songs are very fun.

I really don't like this style of music. I don't know what it is about his voice, but it just rubs me the wrong way. Like he's pretending to have a deep voice but he can't really hit low notes. Anyway, that said, somehow this didn't really piss me off as much as usual. Get a good singer and this gains at least a star. 3.5 stars.

The end of the Sisters as far as I'm concerned. After this, it's a vanity project which I'm not interested in. This, on the other hand, retains enough of the pre-Sisters of Mercy releasing an album, to maintain the interest.

This album really takes me back. Not because I was familiar with it already, but because it reminds me so much of that Peter Murphy song, Cuts You Up, that was everywhere around that time. I'm not a huge fan of goth rock, but it can be catchy and danceable at times. Best example on this album is This Corrosion. Although it goes on a bit long it's a very good song. Overall this is okay but not really my thing. 3 stars.

not bad

We’re goths, not vamps! I don’t love the style. And that super low voice is distracting.

Goth music that ebbs and flows through engagement.

Disco muy en la línea de The Cure. Pop un tanto oscuro con melodías suaves y algo de electrónica

All I needed was to be tipsy on cheap fruit schnapps somewhere formal like a funeral or railway station waiting room, listening to this on cheap headphones, and I would feel teenage again.

It was fine, I quite liked Lucretia My Reflection. Apart from reading about the melodrama of the band during the recording, I'm unsure what else is noteworthy for this to be on 1001. 2.5

Okay album, not what I’d normally listen to. I think there’s a reason this kind of music lost popularity so quickly.

Rock gótico. Ni fu ni fa.

Very Gothic. Very long songs, but overall very enjoyable.

Ehh meh

I thought it was interesting the way it sounded but i don’t know it just didn’t stick with me. It wasn’t necessarily boring, but not up my alley.

It takes exactly one second to figure out which decade this was made in. (gated reverb drums although it certainly sounds like it's just a programmed drum machine). I do quite like the mostly minor key of most of this album; the 80s goth mood is definitely intriguing and cool (even if i didn't at all like this kind of thing at the time). It's just that so much of the instrumentation (drum machine in particular; keyboards) sounds so very dated and often too much so. Not sure why this in particular is so noticeable to me but it becomes a little distracting and often detracts from the songs - e.g. not the fact that there's a drum machine but that there's often little variation in the rhythm (and it's also mixed so damn hot; esp on "Never Land" yeeeeesh turn that snare down) - it's a bit soulless/joyless. Again... it's hard to distill that from the intent and what gives this a unique sound but it often makes it fall just short of me connecting as much as I think I could have or really want to. Would enjoy hearing again but it's a bit short of elite. 5/10 3 stars.

This sounds like a stereotype 80s album but can still be nice from time to time

Interesting. 2.5

Tellement dark, tellement cool

blip bloup

cool album

This album has not aged very well. Specifically the keyboard sounds are outdated. The songs are ok though.

A little dismal but not bad

Mwah, used to like this and the dark sound back at the day, now i don´t. Still some songs that are ok.

There are a few good songs but it's too dark for my taste.

Weird, but cool. Like something a vampire listens to. This corrosion was hella good. And Lucretia my reflection. I can see why it's on here. Good for spooky season.

Dominion/mother russia - really catchy. Love the classic 80s vibe. Flood I - also good but sounded similar to the previous track Lucretia my reflection - that fat bass riff. Love it. Wanting to throw on sunglasses during my 5am commute at this point. 1959 - bringing it down a little with some softer piano. Kind of cheesy. Piano recording quality is terrible. This corrosion - not bad but I started getting bored at this point and arrived at work. I listened to the remaining songs on the way home and although I thought they were good, nothing really stood out to me. I enjoyed this album for what it was and I was pumped to get another album from an artist I had never heard of. Loved the 80s goth vibes but the album really lost my interest after 1959. Would listen to the first three tracks again.

Dominion/ mother Russia- pretty interesting dramatic start. All transitions really solid and I'm a sucker for pretentious poetry references👍 Flood l- instrumental drowns vocals out. Honestly was kinda getting intoit at the end but definitely something to be listened to in the context of the album and not on it own Lucretia, my reflection- this is quite petty lol, musically v solid👍 1959- held back track with just piano and melodramatic vocals. This corrosion- starts with choir . Jesus this guy sounds like a dick no wonder all his bandmates left. Wrote a 9 minute song bitching about he thinks his former band mates lyricism is shit Flood II - better version of flood I👍 Driven like the snow - fairly lowkey for this album, nice track👍 Never land (a fragment)- v meh Rating Cd tracks: torch - sounds like he's given up in the vocal department. Like the flute(?) solo Colours- doesn't do enough for long One of those band but not really a band projects. Feel like this could be atmospheric but I was interrupted. Feel like with the 80s synth sound l should like it more, but idk some lyrics didn't appeal to me. 3/5.

Pleasant surprise. Feels like the Cure on steroids. Not exactly my genre but a nice listen nonetheless

This is what the skids in Letterkenny listen to when they're coming down off of an intense dance-off session. Best track: Lucretia My Reflection

3.5 Never heard this before. I really wish I would have listened to it in 1987, I am sure it would be a classic for me now. It is exactly what I like.

English rock band I liked 1959 a lot - great piano This Corrosion was good too

Big, commanding synth sounds. It makes me feel cold and empty, in a bad way. This will go in the "I don't like it but I respect it" category.

I may be a closet goth, and I'm all for minimalism, but this one falls a little flat. Perhaps intentionally so, but still. The cover kinda cracks me up. Almost looks like a parody of a goth rock album from a sketch comedy show or something. It screams: Yes, I'm the mysterious and moody genius behind the creation of this record... and this other person behind me in the shadows kinda helped too...

I thought I was going to hate this but ended up finding it very interesting. Loved the choir opening on This Corrosion. Overall found it pretty moody and dark with strong 80s vibes.

mid af

p569. 1987. 3 stars. Broody Goth rock meets Jim Steinman and ends up sounding like late 70's Bowie/Iggy. It's OK, but nothing special.

I'm on the fence with this one. There are definitely some good, catchy songs here but it's a bit too long-winded at times. It's still got some charm though. Lucretia, My Reflection is great. I'd probably listen to this again.

Pretty run of the mill stuff. Sounds very 80s. Not too bad not too good. Album art looks like the cover of a bad 2000s YA novel.

There’s a distinct Depeche Mode similarity I’m hearing. And possibly some Tears for Fears rubbed off on them too. I’m alright with it. It’s like those good bands had a little sullen goth okay band.

This is an extremely 80s and extremely dark album. Not really my scene but there's some good shit. This Corrosion is weirdly compelling.

I found myself enjoying a few of the songs on here after being initially skeptical. That album cover tho.

This was kinda fun. I'd need to listen to it again I think but it had a cool sound. I enjoyed it.

synth pop!

Always thought of this band as a cheesy Bauhaus imitation. It's not horrible but not great either.

Very 80s gothic rock. Not my favorite genre or anything but it was alright. Especially the corrosion song

Ik vind dit soort muziek altijd een beetje de goedkope 80s sound, maar wel heel typerend. Niet zo mijn ding eigenlijk, maar prima te luisteren. De melodietjes zijn soms leuk maar de zang vind ik helemaal niks. Mijn favoriet is "This Corrosion" ***

Sounds like Bauhaus.

Goth… didn’t give this my full attention. Not very fair on SOM. Maybe I shall return one day.. but for now!

Solid Industrial

sort of a dark new wave album which is quite unique in sound in my experience but it lacks a bit to be really considered great i suppose

If this is your thing you'll love it. It's not really mine but I did enjoy big parts of it. More from a nostalgia perspective I think.

I just had a hard time really getting into this one. I like some goth-rock and some of the tracks on this were good, and I never wanted to turn it off, but I can't see myself choosing to listen to it again anytime soon.

Ended up liking it towards the end

I have mixed feelings.

Cool post punk et al

Cest pasns8 mauvais, ca sonne un peu billy idol ? J’ai las deteste mais pas trip mon style. 3

Dominion/Mother Russia is a goth masterpiece. The last of the album flags a fair bit, and has aged rather poorly. But still has its time and place intact...

I could see this influencing early NIN with the drum machine and themes. The singing was a bit comical for me though - exactly what I imagine "British gothic rock" to sound like".

Dominion/Mother Russia is zo ontzettend cool!

Some good tunes. I understand why it's on this site but none of them stuck with me

I have a couple late 80’s albums by the Damned, and this is right in the middle of that Venn diagram circle. Good, serious, desperate rock-n-punk pop. Better than a three, but not a four.

I don’t know where these vampires came from, but I sure do like their vampire music. 3.5

Pretty interesting album with a lot to like. Corrosion is a good song. Favourite member of the band: Doktor Avalanche

Classic goth, too bad Spotify doesn't have the full album right now, but will look for it somewhere else to give it a full spin. So far: 3 stars!

Haven't listened to this for years, slightly disappointed it wasn't better! Listenable, dark and smouldering, big 3 singles are still fun (Lucretia, corrosion and dominion). Undoubtedly influential.

Interesting listen. Probably won't return to it much, but it sounded really good. Goth rock certainly had a big moment...

idk. I liked a few songs but not the album as a whole. too much snare drums and reverb maybe? idk that slamming noise is too repetitive and just overly 80s

First song is good, the rest is alright. Kind of this weird dark pop. 6/10.

This album is more interesting to me knowing that one guy played everything and programmed all the drums himself. There's some cool synth stuff but this mostly feels pretty derivative.

Parts of this sound like Bowie making a goth rock album. It’s pretty cool, if a little weird and meandering for my taste.

Catchy moody new wave-ish. Reminds me of Depeche Mode

Some songs are a little monotonous but overall it is a pretty cool goth/new wave album.

catchy but forgetable

nice to listen to more 80's stuff

I didn't get into any particular song on this one, but it did put me in the mind of some lost goth 80s movie that I really enjoyed. Wouldn't turn it off.

Hello, the 80's are calling. If this is goth sign me up, because I didn't know that I even liked goth-rock, but I do. It feels like someone is listening, because today the band is actually from Leeds. This album is for everyone that like this era of rock, very long tracks and the 80's feel. Dominion is my favourite track of the album.

3/5. Real 80s, synthy, a bit Gary Newman-esque, enjoyable but nothin stood out especially.

I liked this album

Sisters Of Mercy would be a great band to see at an after hours club where most of the patrons are pasty white and their hips ramble effortlessly  with attention seeking indifference. I have fond, albeit evanescent, memories of such establishments. So I do like this, on a certain level, but I'm apathetic overall.  Two final thoughts: 1) This Corrosion, and in particular the guitar,  has a sound reminiscent of  Bowie's Scary Monsters;  and 2) I expect I would've gone through the rest of my life without ever thinking about the name Jim Steinman!

Thought this was decent to be honest, touch samey but good enough

Suppose

algo ecléctico, bien pero por un ratito no ma

This was a very interesting album. I liked the music and vocals. I can't put my finger on who they sound like but it's like a mix of Leonard Cohen and Psychadelic Furs. Either way, they are UK and alright with me. Even their album cover is epic. Creepy lady in the back. I really enjoyed This Corrosion.

This was a cool album! Never heard of this band, but enjoyed their sound quite a bit. Without even seeing the date, I could tell this was '80s. The tracks were long, but that didn't bother me. I didn't love it overall, but there was enough on here to keep me interested. Favorite tracks: Dominion, Lucretia My Reflection, Driven Like the Snow. Album art: Almost looks like Michael Jackson. The barely-there faces made me laugh, this one's trying really hard to be cool. I do like it though, I admire them for going for a look. 3.5/5

No me van a creer pero si me pasó a gustar el soniditos de estos vampirillos.

Leider nicht alle songs auf spotify verfügbar. Finde das Album hat eine eigene Stimmung. 3

Muy darksss... no cierto, aguanta.

Had heard "This Corrosion" via "The World's End" soundtrack, but I actually really got into a few songs on this album, from "Corrosion" to "Dominion" and "Lucretia". Some of the others songs are kinda meh, would ideally give this a 3.5.

Actually really liked it, had never heard of them before. Some strange resemblance to Bowies 80s stuff

I already knew the first song and the rest of the album sounded similar but not in a bad way
