Reviews (page 6 of 7)
I can clearly hear why people would love this. But I can also hear a total lack of melodic progesssion and vocal ability totally ruining the hypnotic instrumental aspect of it all for me
nice innit
Lots of 80's synth.
Not too good.
2.7
This was pretty boring. It is considered gothic rock, but I'd much rather listen to The Cure which is also considered gothic rock. The songs were too long.
Meh. 80's goth synth pop.
Singer really ruins this
It’s ok - Could be worse. Really felt like a album Peter Steele loved in middle school.
Maybe in 1987, but not now
Sisters of Mercy - I pray for singing lessons for the lead singer. He really needs them. The drummer was quite hypnotic. So much so, I was falling asleep. I did enjoy the bass player when I heard him. Amen 💤
I'd have liked it more without his overly weird vocals. Generally forgettable music. He should mix up his drum machine beats a bit. Maybe I'm missing the point.
it sounds like a bland score for a corny movie
It's perfectly fine, but outside the first few minutes of the opening track I didn't find myself drawn into any of the songs.
Larguei no meio, achei chato :/
Awful cover
Montage of Scooby-Doo and the gang searching through Count Dracula's mansion type beat
Not goths my ass. 2/5
More 80’s weird sad pop stuff
Man. This is like a stereotype of the 80's, but they actually meant it. I thought they could have cut it at 10-12 songs and then I realized there had only been 8. I could have swore I waded through about 16 echo-synth-drum tracks - and no - I didn't listen to the expanded edition.
Just generally uninteresting.
Pretty run of the mill imo, but I was multitasking!
Not really fond of this group. B version of Depeche Mode. Nothing new.
на любителя, типо кьюр..
what the hell are these vocal harmonies
As a goth band, WAY too campy and over the top. They try too hard and end up just being a caricature.
There are a couple of tunes here that would not be unwelcome at Goth Dance Night, but overall it's a drag
I hope I never have to listen to this industrial dépêche mode garbage again.
Not for me. 80s rock
Not bad but not for me. Lol
(2.5/5) On paper, I should love this. The gloomy gothic sound fits that dark fantasy aesthetics very well. This should've been great, but it just doesn't do it for me. The whole time I was left frustrated, felt like every moment was just a few seconds behind that perfect sound which never appears. The songwriting is lackluster, and repetative - could've easily cut a sizable chunk from every track. A disappointing and frustrating experience overall as it had everything I liked - that dark, moody, gloomy gothic sound, great instruments (bass was amazing in this one) all backed up by it's dark fantasy theme yet remained at arms length throughout its run time. Something crucial felt missing at every moment.
I listened to this. I know I did, but I have no recollection of it whatsoever. Need a relisten to properly rate. Edit: so it’s like super Gothy new wave? Definitely different than a lot of the other 80s options here, but not really doing it for me. I can see why people think it’s cool, though.
Would give 2.5 if I could.like the synth in this but other all was not my thing.
Another band Im completely unfamiliar with. An 80s English rock band. Go figure. Sounds 80s with that drum machine. With that post punk style vocals. I don’t know this is boring and doesn’t feel special at all. Not for me. The piano ballad 1959 is first song I thought was a good one. It’s all just be very blah and dark and just repetitive. Nothing exciting. It’s considered “gothic” and I get that. There’s a version of this that’s fine and maybe some songs would work well in an 80s rock/post punk playlist but as a stand alone record, it doesn’t do anything for me. I’m going to go 2 on this because it’s not offensive in a way to get a 1.
"My voice is very very deep and I'm very sad and English." Fuck off. "This Corrosion" is a good song, though.
Very meh in my opinion.
Not my favorite, but could be worse
Didn’t care too much for this one. Potential 1 star if yesterdays album hadn’t been what it was
Notable Songzeile: I had money and stuff Each and every call Too much, but never enough Tear it up, and watch it fall Ich kann das absolut nicht ernstnehmen.
2 stars
Too dark and loud for me. “This Corrosion” jumpscared me. Most of the album was forgettable for me.
A good album, just liked Dominion/Mother Russia the most.
Not my cup of tea.
Goth rock - not my thing. Ok I guess - found a little dull to be honest
2.0
Super unique album. I didn't really like it, but I think it belongs on this list more than some others I can think of.
Mediocre, derivative, 80's stuff that I'm sure plenty of folks swear is the best of the generation. They can have it.
If nothing else, it felt period-appropriate and jives with the album art.
Bring on the flood.
Found this kinda boring # nothing burger but whatever. Eighties for the sake of it snare and tom go brrrrrr
Why does all the music from the era and genre sound exactly the same?
My first question is, why are all of the songs so damn long?? 8 songs making a 45 minute album is crazy to me. This album feels pretty classically goth to me. But the first song being 7 minutes long with the exact same beat the E N T I R E time is certainly a choice. This music kind of just sounds like nothing, not gonna lie. I'm not surprised they're English.
non le mie vibes, però riconosco che possa piacere
Teenage me probably would have liked this, as it stands, just ok.
The chick is hot
I was into the idea of this but it wasn't campy/dramatic enough. Instead it was background music to me, prettying boring. I liked This Corrosion and Dominion/Mother Russia best.
Monotonous. I think my real issue is with synth heavy bands and drum machines. When you strip the human element from music, you strip it's soul. It's artistry. There's a reason the New Wave crashed never to be heard from again. Influence 2. Hits 2. Intangibles 3. Quality 2. Sleepy go night night 2.
Already don’t remember
I only liked 1959
Very Depeche Mode-y
It was fine but it all felt like one really long song, nothing of note stood out.
I knew "This Corrosion", which to me was an over-hyped just-OK song. The rest of the album is sonically similar and didn't do much for me. But I didn't hate it. I guess I am not a goth.
Dull minimal dark nonsense
My, but this was frightfully dull. Another 1990s sound that was a jumble of blah bands. Now, this is my fault for not learning how to find the good music that was out there. But this album is not to my liking.
It’s not terrible, but 45 minutes of the same sound just got boring real quick. 2.25 / 5
If you love dark wave, you'll love this.If you don't, you'll give it two stars
Better than expected?
Pretty bad but I perked up for Flood II.
Not a lot going on here. They’ve got one tone and it’s ok.
Vampire music. Not to be heard when the sun is up.
There is synth pop… and then there is this: dark synth? I sense a high influence from The Cure - as most of these bands probably are. This album really wants you to know they are dark, mysterious, and brooding. Almost to a comical sensibility. There’s some cool background vocals and choirs that added to the tone. The synth, although very prominent, it didn’t feel over the top as a lot of other synth bands. The percussion is drum machines… which sounds so artificial. The other instruments sound real (minus the synth stuff)… so these obviously fake drum tracks stand out like a sore thumb. The vocal delivery is very robotic and cheesy - as I mentioned before, they are very brooding. There was a bad when I was in high school called HIM that sort of sounds like this band, except they had heavier distorted guitars - but the lead singer clearly wanted to be someone like this lead singer. As well as Robert Smith. Anyways, this wasn’t as shitty as their contemporaries but it’s something that feels like it shouldn’t be in this list. As it sounds like every other one of these bands , with a little shot of the Cure. Nothing new. Nothing original.
This album pretty much embodied everything I hated about 80's music. There were one or two songs that weren't totally washouts. 1.5/5
There were three songs on this album that somehow became twelve songs ....
Whatever genre this mostly sits in is not for me
nothing stood out to me as terrible or amazing, it all kinda sounded like covers of songs by The Cure to avoid copyright strikes in an indie movie.. but the first song was my fav
This was a worse version of other albums that we've already heard.
One thing you have to understand about me is I very much bring my preconceived opinions and biases into my reviews. Like, oftentimes, I’ve decided if I’m gonna like it or not before I’ve even started listening. BUT, and this is key, my mind is very easily changed. Indeed, oftentimes, my final score ends up inflated or deflated just because I’m taken off guard that I enjoyed something way more or less than expected (my 5 star review of Richard Hawley and 1 star review of Amy Winehouse, respectively). Here, we have the Sisters of Mercy, who I’ve never dug into but who routinely show up in playlists with groups to which I do listen a lot (Jesus and Mary Chain, The Cure, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, etc.). Spotify has been telling me for literal years that I would love this album. So I was like “cool, probably a 4 star album.” And then I hit Play. The first 3 songs made me deeply unhappy. Boring, repetitive, overly long. We turned things around with “1959,” which I found to be mildly lovely and is, I think, going to be the only thing that pulls this review out of the gutter. But the we steered right fucking straight back into the gutter with “This Corrosion,” and I am genuinely upset that I already used “boring, repetitive, overly long” above because I am the type of anal where I can’t use the same phrase twice. Dude, I hate this song. It’s still going. I brushed my teeth. The song was playing before. The song was playing after. Time is a flat circle. I have always been the caretaker. Hey now. Hey now now. Sing this corrosion to me. Here’s a fun fact, I thought the Sisters of Mercy had something to do with Nick Cave and I guess they don’t? Maybe I was thinking of “The Mercy Seat,” a song that is better than anything on this album.
Føler at dette er et album hvor demoniske helt vet hva dem skulle lage. Skal de være tøffe og tøffe?, festglade og poppa?, dreamy syntha?, industrielle? Hvem vet
Dull
Not my thing. A bit odd.
Prima
can acknowledge that this is well executed, but it’s hard for me to get past just how self-indulgent it feels. Everything is turned up to eleven: the cavernous production, the endless drama, the unwavering commitment to mood over movement. It’s not sloppy or half-baked. If anything, it’s too committed to its own aesthetic. There’s a certain admiration I have for how fully formed the vision is. This band knew exactly what they were going for, and they achieved it. But that vision leaves very little room for the listener. The songs often feel more like vehicles for atmosphere than something I want to engage with musically or emotionally. I can hear why this record is influential, and I don’t think it’s bad. It just doesn’t invite me in. After a while, the weight of it all becomes tiring rather than immersive. Respect where it’s due, but this is not a world I feel any need to revisit.
meh.
beetje te oude witte mannen muziek
I'm not sure I've ever heard of this group. This kind of sounds like it's straight out of a creepy David Lynch movie. And if that's your jam, you might really enjoy this. It's not my jam, so I didn't really enjoy it. It's not terrible, but not very good. Also, these songs all generally feel longer than they should be.
An English rock band and a very simple album. The beats and the lyrics aren’t complex at all and it does sound a lot like the 80’s. A couple of the songs could easily have been on the Lost Boys soundtrack with their dark tones and eerie sounds. By the time the last song came around, I was overdue to pull the plug. Not very good music.
Not for me too dour
Dorky music, but I thought the three singles were good, and I kinda got into it with multiple listens. But damn, there is not an ounce of coolness here. Most of the songs are terrible, and repeatable.
expected it to be more metal than it was
Cringe
No private session used for Spotify. I like me some 80's goth but I didn't like this. It was way to dramatic, too many keyboards, and too morose, even for Goth.
kinda boring
not an ‘80s music fan for the most part. a lil dreary.
Sounded like a fake battle of the bands band from a bad 80s comedy. The bad guys who are all doom and gloom. Cartoonish sounding.
Fun but weird. Love the instrumentals, don’t like the vocals.
Well. Someone certainly spent the 80’s trying too hard.
Drags terribly. The rhythm can’t get out of its way to hear anything worthy of interest.
Bof bof
kinda weird but in a david bowie sounding way : ))
80's music was something else
I can take only so much heavy reverb
It has everything I thought I liked about 80s music, and yet I only really enjoyed This Corrosion and a few funky synthlines here and there (standout bass on Lucretia My Reflection). It's not a bad album but it's seemingly not for me.
Inte min favoritpost-punk… härliga riff men nja. 2-3
Not sure I'm the biggest fan of this spooky sounding rock genre - there's been a few albums like this on this list
Too 80s for my liking
I can't say that this album made any impression on me
80's style of pop rock has never been a genre I've enjoyed. There is nothing inherently wrong with this album but I won't listen to it again.
I mean it was better than what the cover would let you think. But other than a song or two I didn't jam with the project as a whole.
This 2 is more for my level of enjoyment and not the objective quality of the sounds. Just kinda kept going but for no reason.
Not for me.
o.t. findet es gut
I'm not a fan of gothic rock, but I had gothy mates in the 80s and went to party's where there music boomed out (I was the one in the Erasure, or Pet Shop Boys t-shirt looking a bit out of place) so listening to songs like This Corrosion, and the stonking bass of Lucretia My Reflection bring back happy memories and are decent tunes. The rest of the album doesn't really hold much for me. I'm not really sure what it all means. I recognise that it's an important album in the goth genre, but it doesn't make me want to listen to much more.
If the "Lost Boys" had a direct-to-VHS sequel or series of sequels, this would be the soundtrack for all the mopey scenes.
Many raspberries were blown while listening to this album.
One of my least favourite genres, overproduced goth.
Oli kyllä melko mitäänsanomaton
Man, what the hell is this album cover? Definitely of the era. I was wrong in my genre prediction of the 80s album I rolled yesterday, but hopefully I can redeem myself with this pick. I'm getting strong synthpop vibes from this one. Gothic rock. Oh well. This is a pretty interesting album, though I must admit that gothic rock isn't really in my music-listening wheelhouse. Still, for what this is, it was pretty alright. I can dig the emphasis on dark, heavy synths, even if the lacklustre vocals and overall sludgy instrumentals left a little to be desired. "Flood I" is solid. I like the melody on the synths, and the morose vocals work pretty well here. "Flood II" is a solid follow-up. I like the more resolute sound, and the acoustic guitars pair nicely with the moody ambience. Truth be told, the rest of this album is kind of unremarkable. The songs kind of blend together. Book time. "...one of gothic rock's most influential musicians". Recorded almost entirely by one guy. That's about it. Wikipedia says that this album charted well and was a bit of a slowburn among critics. Hmm. A lot less than I was expecting for a seminal gothic rock album, but I guess this is still a solid showing. I cosign this inclusion.
Very 80s, very British, very goth. Nothing that blew me away, unique vocals, but musically pedestrian by todays standards.
ugh
Not a big fan overall, but I can appreciate why people love it. The production is clean, dark, and big, and This Corrosion stands out as the one that really works for me. The rest felt too slow and detached to connect with, even though I can see the vision behind it.
Joyless goth Pulp cover band. No thank you, sir.
I guess it’s October so I’m getting a cluster of spooky albums! Sisters of Mercy always seemed late to the party. Ten years prior, this would have been earth-shattering. But in the late eighties, more of a throwback. It's merely okay. Goth, yes, just evil enough to upset the parents, but not so disturbing as to make the listener question the artist's or their own sanity. And isn't that what you really want from your Goths, music that is ON THE OTHER SIDE of sanity? The synth heavy sound and Eldritch's monotonous baritone became tiresome after about 30 minutes. Not enough hooks to keep you engaged as a first time listener. Not annoying, but not great either. Some intriguing poetic lyrics and sinister attitude keep it from being a total loser. Just kind of behind the times, and owes a LOT to all those late 70's acts it steals from like Joy Division, early Cure and the Berlin years Bowie.
It was alright. I quite liked their sound (goth with electronic drums) but I wasn’t really paying attention so I can’t really remember any of it beyond that.
I try to be pretty objective with a lot of these albums, but this is one that I really struggled to do so, just because this is so far from my personal taste, that it became really hard to listen to. And my rating ends up reflecting my personal taste a lot more than the actual quality of the music. I just did not enjoy any of this, even though, it's really not bad music by any means. Favorite Song(s): Lucretia My Reflection
Very 80s, very goth. Okay but not sure I’ll keep coming back to this.
discovered goth rock today and discovered it best left to the goth kids in South Park.
Boris did Flood II better in Flood Reminds me of something, not really bad, just not my thing
I found this annoying as hell
Each track sounds the same. Heard “This Corrosion” before - good track.
interesting enough album to be included here. new-wave-esq big 80's synth and drums. actually reminded me of Type-O-Negative a tad too.
Pas du tout ma came, j'ai trouvé l'album assez ennuyeux et répétitif. 2/5
🫤
Barely remembered it while it was happening
++: Dominion / Mother Russia (Medley) +: Flood I, Flood II +-: Lucretia My Reflection, This Corrosion, Driven Like the Snow, Never Land (a Fragment) -: 1959 4,2/10
meh
Nope
I can see where people would like it but not my type of music what do ever.
2 Stars (5/15)
Not really horrible, but really sombre, quite doleful. And not really fun.
Siniestramente desfasados.
This made me feel like I was stuck in the movie Donnie Darko. I grew pretty tired of listening after a while, especially the production on the drums which sounded so 80's throughout and nearly the exact same tempo every song. It overall was too dated and sounded cheesy. The vocals sounded like wannabe David Bowie from his Berlin days, but about 8+ years too late. The over-the-top goth rock just didn't really do it for me.
not for me!
Meh. Not a huge fan of the campy, dark genre.
Repetitive and boring.
Only a tiny bit of this was maybe ok, and then again maybe not.
It always amazes me how poor vocals weren’t drawback in the 80’s. Production was great at least.
Not sure what to make of this. Too much variety?
Sort of like an early industrial Type-O Negative but more synthy without the the metal
Okay English rock
More new-wave crap
Melodramatic 80’s synth rock. Don’t care for this.
I really wanted to like this, a drum machine and reverb is a winning combo for me usually but there just aren't any real standout tracks for me. I gave it another listen for this list and still wasn't grabbed by it.
Really not much memorable here, despite the efforts of Jim Steinman, who was a god of rock and roll melodrama.
*Strange combo of Depeche Mode style music mixed with a really deep growly almost metal voice. *Kinda cool, but wouldn't listen again on my own. RATING - 6/10
Bowie meets Meatloaf.
Edgy indeed. I have a better alternative to this type of instrumental and genre, most popular songs from Sandra sound like that, more upbeat though and having a female voice.
I felt like the songs were good but the execution was poor, It felt edgy for the sake of being edgy whereas a modern and upbeat cover of some of the songs like 1957 could make the songs sound a lot more pleasant
Gary King has shite taste in music
2.5
2.5
Not a floodland as such. Fairly parched of anything that constitutes as 1001-worthy music to be honest. This is as crummy, dank and dated as goth music can get. Give me Sister Sledge any day. Swing Out Sister would easily be a better pick over this as well.
Singer really ruins this
Vampire fuck jamz
Very interesting but not overly entertaining for me. The songs all went on for a bit too long without much change. Thank you drum machine! There is some neat computer beat programming mastery here though. The interesting part is to hear what I would consider to be early industrial music.
Just fucking pay an actual drummer, dickheads
I wanted to like this one but it just doesn't land for me. The first three tracks are built so similarly they're practically indistinguishable to me. The slower tracks don't have the lyrics to keep my interest and are so repetitive I can't feel like they justify their length. All in all a disappointing album from a band that seems like it's trying to be too cool for itself.
Bit heavy
First song was enjoyable, but then everything else sounded like it. The only song that switched it up was 1959, which I didn't care for.
Väldigt 80-tal, inte riktigt för mig
This is one of those albums id give 1 star to, but feel like I really shouldn't
Album 812 of 1089 Sisters Of Mercy -Floodland (1987) Rating : 2 / 5 Thinking gothic rock may not be my thing.
Grand in its sonic scake which is what I appreciate most. I feel like some of the earlier post-punk / gothic stuff didn’t sound as massive - which isn’t a knock on the albums that came before this one, they just weren’t working with the technology to make their stuff sound as cinematic as this album does at times. Great opening track in “Dominion / Mother Russia” thats clearly meant to get stuck in your head. Also a fan of the dramatic piano ballad “1959”. All this being said, nothing about this project had me head over heels. I feel like we’ve been on a run of these albums lately - all good, nothing amazing. Could be a 3, I’m feeling a 2 today
Oh, goths! This is a dull and dreary drum machine driven album. It's not really very interesting. Andrew Eldritch seems to have made a career out of alienating erstwhile band-mates!
Had some interesting parts, overall a standard Album
Most Sisters were like a Floodland around Len Houmous. Of Mercy or otherwise! 2.1 3. Lucretia My Reflection
Very forgettable to me.
Low, gravelly vocals and operatic backing vocals. Quite haunting. Strong, punchy instrumentals. Different to what I’ve heard before which is refreshing.
Felt dark and anxious
Another odd inclusion on this list. Just don’t get why anyone needs to hear this one.
It was all right, sounded like a lot of the stuff that came in that place in time. I’m not a huge fan of Gothic rock genre personally, but it sounds like a mix of joy division and new wave like human league. Two out of five.
Type O Negative but not as good
Couple of good tracks but mostly quite generic 80’s music.
Overall I just couldn’t really get into this. Honestly if that short song at the end were a full song it would’ve been my favourite on the album and if the rest of the album sounded closer to that it probably wouldn’t have ended up being 2 stars
Left me thinking I was listening to Joy Division, so much so that my ears pricked up and I thought this has got better - it had finished in fact and Spotify played JD She’s lost Control. Very unforgettable I’m afraid
Maybe a couple tracks here and there, but overall can’t listen to a full album straight of this. Very 80s, glad I got to hear it once. Probably will not revisit.
I guess some vibes sometimes but still too 80's coated for me to get into. Will I listen to again: 4%
This sounds like if you told someone to record a rock album at The Haunted Mansion
Musics fine but it’s not my taste. Full 80’s mood to get into it. 5/10.
Started kind of fun, a little dark and 80’s sounding. By the end was just wanting to be done with listening. Wasn’t bad but it definitely wasn’t good either, just noisy. Kind of crazy how dated the sound is (not a bad thing at all) and did like the vibe and themes. Ultimately could have listened to the first track 8 times and had the same exact listening experience. Fav track: 1959
This album is supposed to be dark and gothic but it was honestly just boring. Bro has the type of voice that wavers and makes him sound like a 90 year old about to collapse at the mic. It definitely gave 80s vibes. Talking about “her hallway” made me cringe so bad. You guys are NOT mysterious and cool just musty I bet.
If I heard this playing in a public setting I wouldn’t be that upset.
Kunne ikke lide det ret tit. Det var også kedeligt.. Åbneren var det værste på albummet.
Pølsemandens Joy Division I korte momenter rammer de den. Men jeg sidder hele tiden og tænker at de forsøger på at være dystre og cool.
It’s like, my vibe but in the worst way possible.
For once, the album cover conveyed exactly what the music was. Or I guess it could've been the cover art for a Dracula movie as well. I didn't expect something describes as "gothic rock" to sound so close to 80s pop and synth music. Especially the drum parts are very electronic. There are some choirs, strings, and organs throughout the album, like in 'This Corrosion' for example, that surely cements the feeling of being awoken in Transylvania. Must say this music does very little for me. It sure grabs my attention due to it being quite different, but it's not because its purely because it's different and not because it is good or moves me. Like, why would I want to listen to this instead of Depeche Mode if I wanted some 80s sounding synth record? Strong 2. Not because it sounds bad, but because it's not my thing at all, and not hit songs really on the record that can carry it to a 3.
I can't stand this version of 80s pop
this isnt anything anyone needs to listen to before dying, it was fine
4/10 - It was kind of bad. Not very enjoyable to listen to. Reminded me a bit of depeche mode/david bowie but worse.
There’s this scene in “It’s a Wonderful Life” when George dances with Mary for the first time and a character played by the actor most famous for playing Alfalfa in The Little Rascals objects and George Bailey looks at him with anger and disdain and says “Oh why don’t you stop annoying people.” It’s on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/NBKqJHOC0JY?si=GITeWA4FCyrhHnI_. Every once in a while I will hear a song that causes me to look at the radio in disdain and say out loud “Oh why don’t you stop annoying people.” This whole album made me feel that way. The album cover is hilarious though.
I guess this is what goth rock is. The 80s are easily my least-favorite decade for music, especially rock music, so this one fits the bill of a record I don't really care for. Not the worst thing I've heard, but I won't willingly revisit this one again. Hopefully others enjoyed it.
big drums, big sound, very synths, very angelic but why? This album is against some other brilliant albums that missed out. There's nothing bad about it but it sounds like a blurry mess. Maybe if I was against a boss in a medieval video game it might be a good fit it's so not it.
This Corrosion is neat. Rest of the album is not great. If anyone is listening to this outside of being forced or it being the month of October, please seek mental health services. 2
The guys voice is just really boring
Vilt. Höga höjdpunkter och riktigt låga lågpunkter. ”This Corrosion” är radiovänlig goth, trots motsägelsen. Syntsatanism som hade passat bäst på ett sci fi-/fantasy-soundtrack. Jobbigt att lyssna på stundtals pga repetitiva melodier.
When it comes to the Goth/dance sound this pales in comparison to the Cure and New Order. I found the vocals a bit annoyingly repetitive. 2.5⭐️
1.5/5
Floodland isn't very good, the idea is, but fucking hell it's just terribly 80s in every way. I don't need New Wave Goth, thank you, and although it does a decent job at times (Lucretia My Reflection), I found it all just fading into nothingness. Vocals weren't bad, the music was, 2/5.
I can get down with some Gothic Rock, but this just ain't it. Most of the album feels like it's stuck in slow motion — overly dramatic without much payoff. The mood is there, sure, but it kind of drags without delivering anything that really sticks. That said, "Lucretia My Reflection" is a total banger. Great groove, cool vibe, and actually feels alive compared to the rest of the album. If the whole record had that energy, this would be a totally different review.
It was OK. Enjoyed bits of it...
yeah thats a rough listen NNN
The guy on the album cover looks like a total douche. He sings like one too. Pretentious pop is what I’d call this. Not totally awful, just not the fun type of pop I prefer.
Reminds me of the goth folks I knew in the 90s acting dour and sullen I can just feel the "I just think vampires are cool ok" dripping off this album It also has an 80s Bauhaus feel to me
Not really for me.
80s drama mama
kind of a smiths vibe but less popish to me i guess, i enjoyed the instrumental songs of the second part more than the ones with lyrics
как оказалось, жанр готический рок не вообще не для меня, очень драматично
1.5 rounded up. this 45min album felt like 3 hours!! like if depeche mode were even more boring zzzzzz. not the worst album ever fs, there were like two brief moments where i almost enjoyed it zzzzzzz
Страшилки какие то ебаные, вы кого напугать вздумали епты??
Definitely a mood, just not my mood. Very much a product of the 80’s.
I never had an interest in Sisters Of Mercy and they sounded like I imagined. Dark, moody, goth rock isn't may idea of a good time and it was both unmemorable and boring. I get there's an appeal for some people and it wasn't the worst thing I've heard, it's just that I don't need to hear more.
Soundtrack music for bad 80's action movies.
Feels more pedestrianly plodding, than darkly brooding today. "Mother Russia" gets us off to a (not unpleasantly) droning start – oh, those drum machines, that Cure-lite guitar figure, and oh those backing vocals and soulful sax – all appropriately (by which one means vaguely) (sac)religious-y. So far, so Goth (though perhaps this is actually pre-Goth). "Flood I" feels about as forced and synthetic as a pop/rock song cut can feel, even grading on the Goth curve; plus, it may have been on the Terminator soundtrack. "Lucretia" is not terrible, and sounds somewhat urgent, if canned. The piano playing on "1959" is borderline incompetent, though it's clearly meant to be as lovely and porcelain as the skin of this band's sun-fearing and overly femme fans. The chorus ("hey now/hey hey now") on the big hit, "This Corrosion," seems to undercut the whole seriousness of the Goth project, despite the ethereal opening of the choir at vespers. Otherwise it's a dance floor singlaong with a bad synth passage that was on the Beverly Hills Copy OST, one's quite sure, though maybe it was Beverly Hills Cop 2. It all plays much poppier today than one remembers and more or less makes one want to listen to Peter Murphy. And the humor the editors hear -- where is that, exactly? Unless the whole thing is a joke, which one had always sort of assumed, especially since the cover photo has always reminded one of Michael Jackson and maybe this cat lightened up later and started doing vocals for Crash Test Dummies. Rounding down because pretension has its price.
Pretty much exactly what I expected which isn't a bad thing, it's just not really my thing.
2.5 made me feel uncomfortable and not in a good way.
**An ok album, not my cup of tea
Floodland is the second studio album by English gothic rock band the Sisters of Mercy, originally released in 1987. Goth rock from this era is so hit-or-miss for me. Like, The Cure are cool as fuck but these guys came off a bit too cheesy for me. The synths and drum machines are too much and don't add to the songs. And it's not even only drum machines, they use a lot of those weird Casio percussion sounds too. And a sax solo? Really? If I were around in the 80s when this came out I probably would've dug it. Listening in 2024 and I would rather be listening to better Goth bands.
Boring goth, nothing special from the ‘80s
Nice Cave joining The Cure for a remake of Lou Reed's Berlin.
Extremely eighties sounding, this seems pretty unexceptional. Singer sounds a bit Bowie-like, but if Bowie didn't have any good tunes.
80s rock, quite repetitive.
I like the idea of this, and the general atmosphere the Sisters create, but it did get a bit samey after a few songs. Another timepiece that really sounds like the time it was made in.
Introducing a new genre: Comedy Goth. I can't take this seriously. Is that Phil Collins on drums?
Meh. I’ve not really got any strong opinions on this. Maybe it needs the visual to fully land. Some of the song are too long.
Favourite song - The corrosion
very boring
80’er goth rock, lidt poppet, lidt synth, ikke lige min stemning
depressed mode
not for me
Meh
Voz de ultratumba. Alguna canción bien, pero sin más.
If you asked an artificial intellegence to create a goth-rock album, this is what it would come up with, right down to the cover art. The drum programming is super boring. And the whole thing has kinda one gear. Hard pass.
2.5
Promising start with dominion. Went down from there. Thankfully “this corrosion”, picked it back up. Other than that the rest of the album did not strike a chord with me.
This entire album reminds me of low quality (B) 80s movies. At least the movies are fun to watch. This album is far from fun
Boring
could i write poetry to this? n
I really wanted to like this album. But I didn't.
I don't know kinda moody, semi-depressing and weird. The 80s production didn't help. Not something I'd put on again
They went "all in" on the 80s style
Took much dull plodding and waaaaaay too much gated reverb from the drum machine.
I was bored.
Hurray for ticking yet another band I know the name of but havent really listened to. And kudos for music thats simultneously propulsive in beat, and depressing in atmopshere, a unique gift and the quivering postruring voice - yeah nah, actually NO! I dont want to wade kneee deep through this flood and of misery, a journey through doom and gloom. (but it doesnt sound definitive and atmospheric, I'll give them that, and points for ernestness.) . thoose a well lived life, not misery and loathing - its such a teen place to be. But well crafted misery - I can see how they authoritatively hold a niche and style.
Gothic really ain’t my go. I never enjoyed this band back in the 80’s & nothing’s changed.
While I didn’t hate this, I can’t imagine who is listening to this unironically or not as part of like a soundtrack to something
Standard 80’s rock
4/17/24. Haven't heard of this artist before, or this album. Unfortunately it didn't do much for me; good vocals and songs were okay, but didn't separate from the typical 80s sound I'm familiar with.
Goth rock is not something that I listen to, but this is not too bad. Some great early adoption of synth drums and computers using squenciers.
Bland and derivative
boring ahh album
A couple of cool tracks, but too 80s (with the drum machine and synths) for my liking
While at times melodic and engaging, these are rare. Largely dark and brooding with lyrics that don't resonate.
I can remember this band cause I’m old. However, no one remembered or bought this album. What is it doing on this list?
A kind of worse version of Depeche Mode.
Very 80s. Very dull.
It’s aight
Not really into cheesy 80s synth pop.
Bien ochentoso monótono. Onda Tears for fear pero más choto.
Ist das Depeche Mode in lahm und eintönig?
80s pop rock rock with a hint of indie. 2 stars
2 - Man, this was just boring. Maybe I'm just not that into gothic rock.
warum so düster 🤔
One of the draws of doing this is to see if I can like some genres that I am just convinced I will never like. I don't think I'm there yet, but I did like This Corrosion!
Pretty uninspiring gothic/post punk 80s stuff. Like a blend of the cure/joy division/type o negative that didn't quite work out. First track was alright but quickly tailed off. Terrible album cover by the way. Looks like something I would have made in PowerPoint during my emo phase when I was 15. 2.5*
Not a fan of this genre - therefore not sure what makes this special. It's two people and a synth that sound like every other late-80s band that did the same thing. "Lucretia" and "1959" were stand out tracks. I enjoyed listening to them and musing about how much better they would have been if Pearl Jam had recorded them. Still, credit for the song writing and arrangement on those.
Meh
couldnt really get into it. one song i liked i think
Not bad
As soon as I saw the album cover I knew I was in for a Depeche Mode type album. This Corrosion and Flood II were standouts. Otherwise this gets a similar review to Depeche Mode where I don't think the album is bad, I just really dislike this emo 80s era personally. That being said, this wasn't as bad as I expected, just really repetitive. This could warrant a 2.5, but I'm rounding down because I'm feeling spiteful today.
Memories of 80s sweater bands honestly but with more edge
Too much of this sounds like someone in the '80s wanted to modernize Russian military music and make it appeal to the masses, so they threw in a synthesizer and a drum machine.
Dominion has almost 7 million plays on youtube music. Just because it has more plays than an entire smiths album doesn't mean it's great. Or good. Expanding a song to 7 minutes also doesn't move the needle for me.
80s, spacy. It gets old after a while 2.5 stars
The singer's voice was too deep, it was kinda creepy, I didn't enjoy this very much. Stand-out: This Corrosion
Bland 80s
Huh, olihan ärsyttävä ja huono levy.
Raskas. Justjust 2*
When the first song kicks in, with its pulsating drumming, this seems like a winner - and it is a decent listen. But as it progresses, it does seem a bit samey.
Not for me.
This corruption was a really good song, others are quite meh One of the better British bands I’ve listened to 2/3***
80’s synth goth - meh
Bad eighties goth. Awful repetitive drum machine programming and Eldritch sounds like a panto villain. Give me Bauhaus any day.
Really not doing it for me. It's just so corny and cheesy and it feels derivative of something. Derivative of what? I'm not even sure and to be honest I don't really care enough to put a lot of thought into it. I'm not enjoying this. That one track that is the super midi sounding piano ballad with the lyrics that went something like "where the wind blows" is the highlight of lowness. I think it was called "1959"? It's so cheesy and unappealing. Hard to listen to. This wasn't it for me.
I start back into this and the first two that I listen to are steaming piles of poo.
Not my cup of tea. I wasn't friends with the kids that liked this is HS.
It was alright. 2/5
Not a fan. The 1980s are so weird, lol. That huge cavernous snare is the worst sounding the world to me. All the songs are long and drawn out. This singer is like Bruce Springsteen's emo cousin who loves to dance (in the dark, of course). I'd rather listen to The Cure or New Order if I want to dance or feel 80s emo sad.
Ochentero
