Reviews (page 6 of 7)
it’s far too long and apparently this is only volume 1! Also feels like a cruel punishment giving us another live album from the 70s within a week I would say the whole thing kinda just washed over me, but the 10 minute long final two tracks were definitely starting to test me Highlight was Saint Dominic’s Preview but i couldn’t tell you why
Never been a massive Van Morrison fan and nothing here changed that. Not terrible at all but just not for me
Why can’t I understand a single word this man is singing?
Would like to know who actually thinks this is one of the greatest live albums of all time? Do people actually believe that, or did some reviewer at some point suggest that and now we take it as fact?
Not a fan of live albums but it’s fine.

Ugh. This was not a fun listen. Happy it is over. A couple okay songs was not worth the filler.
A live album is a greatest hits really. This is fine. But Astral Weeks and Moondance tell you all you need to know about van Morrison. 2.5 rounded down because it’s a greatest hits in disguise.
A bit of a disappointment. The song selection is pretty good, but it doesn't sound like Van was in the mood. I admit I didn't read the album notes to know how many nights this covered. I love Domino and Caravan as songs, but not these versions, nor the 10 minute seventies wig outs. Rarely boring, here Van is a tad on the boring side. Not worthy of consideration.
I was talking once with a friend about the current state of R'n'B, and I listed off some popular contemporary artists who I thought were doing interesting work. "Oh," replied my friend "I don't really think of that as real R'n'B" and then gave some examples of bands (all at least twenty years old) who did records that he considered 'proper' R'n'B. All of the bands he listed were white. He didn't really have much to say after I pointed that out. I am reminded of that conversation when I read reviews of this record as being "soul music in a very real sense", "pure blue-eyed soul passion", and Van as the "young soul lion". This is soul music by white people for white people. I just don't feel the intensity when compared to live recordings from, say, Sam Cooke or Otis Redding or Aretha Franklin or James Brown. Yeah, I get that Van has a good voice and is intensely in the moment, but it doesn't feel real to me. It doesn't help that his band of crack session musos play it so fucking safe. This is ninety minutes of boring, mid-tempo, competently professional backing, but with little spark (the cliched saxophone solos particularly stand out as merely stock). I will admit that they do a good job of riding with Van's on-the-fly arrangement of the songs, using hand gestures to guide, extend and control the songs. But they don't have a lot of soul. This is most apparent in the covers, which all pale (pun intended) in comparison with the originals. A key element of the myth of this album is that Van wouldn't allow any over-dubbing. It had to be perfect and an accurate representation of what happened on stage (which is laudable), so the song 'Moondance' (his biggest hit) didn't make the cut supposedly because of one bum note. I don't believe that for a minute; the album is compiled from multiple nights, so surely there was at least one performance that went OK. Plus, soul music is about the _feel_, not note-perfect performance. The mistakes are part of the sauce that makes soul so tasty. I reckon Van Morrison deliberately didn't include his biggest hit because he thinks the record buying public can go fuck themselves. I confess my long-standing prejudice against Van Morrison as a performer. He was, admittedly, pretty on fire for these gigs, but he also has a well-documented history of being an unpredictable, cranky and undemonstrative performer. I feel that he is a selfish musician with a limited repertoire of tricks, and he is often contemptuous of his audience which is unforgivable in my mind. I did not enjoy this over-long album. I wavered between being bored and pissed off and wondering (yet again) why black artists are so under-represented on this list. 2 stars.
My previous album was an Eric Clapton offering, now I have Van Morrison, so it's back-to-back anti-vax twats. I have already listened to Morrison's Moondance from this list and I hated it, so let's see what this has in store for me. Well, it's a lot better, but it would have really been going some to be worse. I'm not sure if it's the songs he's singing or how he's singing them, but these is far more tolerable, even if I don't like it. It sounds very American, like some kind of off-brand Springsteen. I'm never going to listen to this again, though, especially as it is much too long, both the whole album and the individual tracks.
Kinda mid
2.5
sounds like this would have been fun to be at but live albums suck
Not my thing
Nah. One star for some good horns & instrumentation. Will remember zero of this before I go to bed tonight.
DNF, too long, but fine music. getting real tired of listening to 70s classic rock every day
Van's music has sadly lost its importance for me. Could barely make it through this one.
Enjoyable enough collection, but someone with only a vague interest in Van Morrison this is too long for me. Listen to the Lion in particular tried my patience with it’s duration pushing nearly 9 minutes. See also caravan. Gloria is by far and away the highlight of this album. It offers a good blues ladden tune which enables Van’s vocals to shine. Unfortunately this is not enough to lift this above a fairly dull and long live album
I may have grown up 30mins away from home of one Sir Ivan George Morrison but that does not mean I subscribe to a Cult of Van the Man - something which is basically sacrilegious for that part of the world. There’s no doubt the man is very talented; it’s just unfortunate he mainly produces dirge and appears to be an insufferable human being. 1hr and 30mins of Van Morrison is frankly too much Van Morrison - especially when none of the (very few songs) I genuinely like are here. “Gloria” from his Them days is about as close as I come, and even that’s too long compared to the original, studio version, meaning that it loses some of its punchiness. I will admit to feeling something a bit warm or fuzzy whilst listening to “Cyprus Avenue” - its imagery really does evoke that most beautiful, leafy street in one of the nice parts of Belfast, with the railway line running behind it and out onto one of the not so nice bits - I just did not need 10mins of it, and take issue with the Wiki page calling it “dynamic”. It wasn’t dynamic. The entire album is pretty much whatever the opposite of that is.
It's soooooooooooo looooooooooooong. I paid virtually no attention to this but it passed the time while working. After what felt like half a lifetime, I checked to see how much was left and was relieved to know there were only two songs left so I could finally listen to a different artist. His voice is nice. I like the brass. Van Morrison is another rank bastard (there's been a few on the list recently). The album was fine but far too long. 2/5
Again pleasant music. Decent voice. But this genre is totally uninteresting to me.
Ganz nett
Like many live albums without new material or transformative versions of an artist's best material, this falls into the "for hardcore fans only" bucket. Yes, the band is tight, and yes, Morrison's voice is excellent, feeling more free than on his often reigned-in studio material. But this is filled with covers and lesser-known songs and - more importantly - showcases very little variety. There is soul, blues, and jazz, but all have the same sound palette from Morrison's admittedly very good band. Only on the extended, free-flowing tracks like "Listen to the Lion" and "Caravan" does the band loosen up and make full use of the live setting (though the overlong version of "Cypress Avenue" is too loose and easily worse than the original studio version). Almost everything here is good, but ninety minutes of it aren't going to convince anyone that isn't already a Morrison fan.
Just so long and so boring
why would I give a fuck bro
It’s fine, don’t know why it’s in this list, it ain’t a special live album for me.
I’m not sure what this was - three tracks?
🥇aint nothing you can do 🥈domino 🥉warm love HM: these dreams of you, bring it on home to me, gloria
I really like Van, but this is the weakest live album assigned to date. Really did not like the Bring It On Home to Me cover, the existence of which I also kind of object to on principle...
Not for me
too long
Not a fan of live albums
It has some moments where it really threatens to get excited but most of this feels like the work of someone who wants to be appreciated agms a proper bluesman rather than to entertain
Decent songs, great musicians. On paper, this seems like a great album. Yet, there is something about Van Morrison that has always bothered me. He seems disconnected, like none of it is genuine. The result is a boring sleeping pill that just won’t end. Zzzz…
I don't mind it, bit it's waayyy too long. Who has the time or patience for a live double album?
Very tight, very passionate, very well executed. Did not like the disturbing segues between songs which made it seem NOT like a live album. These were very poorly executed, and likely that’s the Spotify version with clear cut divisions between tracks. It can’t be that bad on vinyl, right? As you know, I’m a huge fan of Van the Man. But a live album nonetheless, so free pass. (2.49s) Not enough spontaneity despite that it’s a live album. This deducted the critical 0.01 point. Surprisingly with so many good songs, the best track is the cover of Bowie’s Here Comes the Night. That says a lot. Don’t need my hour and a half back, that tells ya it was worth the listen…
Another one for the 1"001 Concerts You Should Have Been At" list. Sure it's some great live music. Morrison gets down and pours soul into his tunes. The back up band is also on point. It may not have all the greatest hits, but it's still a selective album. If you can tailor the release by handpicking top songs over a career, it's not this list worthy in my opinion. I only want studio projects and for that...1.9 stars.
Another reluctant live album with this one coming in over 90 minutes. You get a good smattering of some of Van Morrison's best songs and a couple of class guest hits with some really nice accompaniment on horns and strings. The backing band is humming which really helps to fill out the album and you can tell the synergy was there as they were going through the set list. Can't say I didn't enjoy it but there is still so much lost between an audio recording of a live show and actually being there or even having seen the band live at a different time. I have limited knowledge of Van Morrison and never got the pleasure of seeing him live (don't expect I ever will since he's technically still active) so even while some of the tracks were good these live recordings do little to impact me. I almost always prefer listening to a studio version vs. live recording but Van sounded about as good as you can on this one. It's a decent album but its hard to classify this as something I needed to hear before I die. Outside of some specific legendary live recordings that have a very notable story or have survived the years in pop culture references I find most live recordings to just be an alternate glimpse into a band's work. It's Too Late to Stop Now wasn't bad considering I expected 90 minutes of some mellow drawn out VM deep cuts. You can do a lot worse, especially in some of the other live albums on this list. 2.22 stars
Man, he really phoned this one in. A lot of talk singing, a lot of off tune belting. The band is tight and doesn’t noodle around a lot. The best parts are when he’s not singing.
I am happy he had some fun. The songs are all kinda okay, I can hear why people like the record. Doesn't really do it for me.
I just can't do live albums.
Nah
Ehh. I very much have to be in the mood for Van Morrison, today was not one of those days.
You make this live album over 90 minutes long and don’t even play “Brown Eyed Girl” or “Moondance”? That’s just sick, man.
Bland has white bread.
Ugh. White guy blues. I stopped half way though. Apparently it wasn’t too late.
All due respect to Van Morrison who has made some amazing albums, but there’s no way that this random list of 18 live songs is something you must listen to before you die.
I'm sorry, it's never too late to stop, in fact the sooner the better. I stopped listening quite soon. Not a fan of Van. It's a live album. It's far too long. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ in part Revisit ❌️ ★★☆☆☆ (4/10)
I'm not sure why this is rated as one of the greatest live albums of all time - it sounds fine and the band is okay. Bare minimum requirements for any musical act. I knew maybe one of the songs on the tracklist, but by the time we got there I was bored by the sameness of Van's vocals, by the live arrangements, by the songs themselves. There's precious little variety here. Little crowd interaction. As a fellow Northern Ireland guy you'd think I'd know more VM songs but no, we learned to avoid his inane ramblings many moons ago. His voice is tolerable for a song or two - when you're drunk at a wedding - but for 18 songs? Live? Come on, lads. Also - far too many parping horns on this album for my taste. As soon as I hear a trumpet, I know I'm in for a slog.
# 605 : It's Too Late to Stop Now I want to like it, but it's so hard to enjoy a live album.
Cool
Never got the hype
Im gonna say it. This was boring. Like incredibly boring. Background noise for an hour and a half. If an alien was asked to create generic earth music this would be it.
This live soul-rock album flows like a river at sunset—warm and steady beneath shimmering brass and piano currents, with vocals that ripple between fervent cries and gentle reflections, yet as the sun wears off, a faint coldness settles beneath its fading glow.
Initial thoughts on opening this one today: - it's a Van Morrison album - oh dear - it's a live double album from the 1970s - this is gonna be terrible With such low expectations this wasn't actually as bad as I feared but it's still not my thing.
It's Van Morrison... but LIVE! 🤷
Plate raide. Niaisage.
On the one hand, I don’t care for live albums; on the other hand, now I have something to add to my Divorced Moms Winter Beach House Party playlist.
Another Van Morrison? The guy only made one great song and then recorded it over and over in multiple arrangements. Making this list once was more than enough for him! Qué cancion más aburrida! One critic opined that many "lame" studio cuts were much improved in live performance. 'Nuff said! (There's a good guitarist hiding in the band.)
Boring.
Don't know if I was just Van Morrisoned out, if it's because it's live album or what, but I just did not care for this album.
Not a bad record but it’s a perfect example of outdated pop rock music from the 70s. Plus it’s way too long.
I’m not a Van Morrison fan, at all. This is good, but not for me.
Van’s wailing is tolerable on recorded tracks but grating live. Who keeps adding live albums to this list? I can’t think of a single song here I’d rather listen to live than recorded.
Salvables: Ain’t Nothin’ You Can Do, Domino, Gloria Peor: Cyprus Avenue #DAY 43: 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die When I feel like an album has wasted my time, it stings a lot, but if the record lasts 90 minutes… then I actually get angry. Van Morrison is a talented Irish musician, gifted at live singing with a certain vocal edge that defines him. He’s got some powerful tracks to his name, like Gloria or Domino, but I also think he stands out for not having a particularly broad artistic vision. This double live LP is made up of various performances with a large backing band, including a string section, saxophone, piano… all the ornamentation you could want to mask the fact that at its core, there isn’t much going on. The setlist feels like it goes in circles from about the sixth track onward. The instrumentation is professional, with a very clean and well-isolated sound, you could almost say it sounds like a studio recording. But honestly, I don’t think that works in favor of performances that already feel unremarkable. We get multiple styles —Soul, Gospel, Rock, R&B, Country, Funk…— all fused together in such a way that only the most superficial aspects of each remain. The album sounds grand, maximalist, a magnitude that serves as a mask to cover up an even greater lack of creativity. And that’s the thing: no matter how well you play your instrument or how much music theory you know, if there aren’t any interesting ideas that make you stand out, you bore at an incredible speed. As for Van Morrison himself, as a singer, he’s fine. He’s got a few tricks, but he constantly sounds like he’s imitating his influences —Elvis, Solomon Burke, generally excellent musicians of Soul, Rock, and R&B—. He’s that kind of singer who throws in distorted vocals every other line, draining all expressiveness until it becomes repetitive and tiring. For example, I don’t understand the idea behind breaking up the verses of Warm Love with that constipated style of singing, like he’s coughing out every word… Overall, it’s an album that sounds too clean, too polished. And while the personnel’s improvisational skill and musicality are admirable, it just doesn’t click with me. It was a tough listen, it felt endless, as the songs went by my brain just disconnected because it was receiving the exact same stimuli over and over again… The spiritual/christian side of rock definitely got stuck in the 70s in terms of variation, something I also noticed a bit with Stephen Stills. Redeemable: Ain’t Nothin’ You Can Do, Domino, Gloria Worst: Cyprus Avenue
It was, in fact, never too late to stop listening to this. The production is truly exquisite, I'll give it that, but otherwise one of the most boring and triffling inclusions I've had here. Tedious. (Oh god, there's going to be more Van Morrison, isn't there?)
The band is excellent here. Does that mean Van Morrison sounds good? No, it does not. I can take his vocals for about 15 minutes before I need to turn him off. Astral Weeks and Moondance are probably the peak for what I can stand from Van. This? Just didn't hit. But again: the band is terrific. 5/10
It's Too Late To Stop Now sounds really really ridiculously nice and clean for a live album. However, I'm not really a fan of Van Morrison's vocals, they're very choppy and barking. I just didn't feel this one. The band sounded good, no one would argue that they're anything short of incredible, but I wasn't into the performances. It was a little slow overall, kind of nice relaxing, kind of bluesy, background music but not much here really got me going. It's also pretty long, so it drags if you're not into it. Standouts were "Domino" and "Caravan." I'd give this a 2/5. The music is pretty solid but looks like I'm not much of a fan of Van Morisson.
Van Morrison's vocals on this live album vacillate rapidly between slurring his words as he strains to remember the lyrics to his hits and PROVING. HE. IS. ABSOLUTELY. NOT. DRUNK. BY. MAKING. SURE. TO. ARTICULATE. EACH. WORD. There is no in-between.
Was this concert particularly exciting? Not really. Did this concert really need to be turned into a live album? Probably not. Was it turned into a live album anway? Well if you must.... And was it put in the 1001 albums book in place of countless other more deserving classics? Oh you bet it was!
vai Van Vao
Van Morrison’s voice is infectious Highlights: - Brown Eyed Girl - Moonshine Whiskey - Help Me
Its fine enough, I just don’t really care for this type of music
Hated that it was a live album. Hated that it was a double album. Maybe would have been fine at 45 minutes but this dragged on too long.
Meh, Van the Man, just mum pop.
It's not bad, but I don't feel like it being live adds anything. Pleasant to listen to, but yeah, it'd be better in a classic album format. Definitely not a "have to listen to before you die" contender.
While Van Morrison has had some real bangers, for the most part, I find him tedious. Coupled with the fact that this is a live album, this was not a great experience for me.
Haven’t met a live album that deserves to be on here yet
Its just okay.
Bland and dated
tällaista valkoisen miehen sielukasta RnB musiikkia. Parempaakin kuullut.
Live albums suck
This is a first for me. I listened to almost all 567 albums I had been presented with on this list. I had to Van Morrison albums, Astral Weeks and Moondance, on here before. And the first few tracks on this just confirmed my opinion. So why bother and waste 1.5 hours of my time?
It's ok I guess maar ik vind 2 cd's van dit wat veel (het is een dubbel-album)
Live!🙁
These are annoying and energetic live versions of the songs you kind of know from listening to radio 2 for a few years.
I find live music recordings tedious. I find Van Morrison tedious. So a 1.5 hour live Van Morrison album really isn't my cup of tea.
Background music at your Uncle’s backyard bbq
In the words of my husband, “Zzzzz”
I like Van Morrison well enough (although sometimes when he really winds up, he gets carried away into bad scat). His band is very good. Nevertheless, why oh why do we need a double live album of this?
After two songs nothing made we want to continue. It’s just pub music.
This grumpy old Mick can sing, but I prefer his studio versions to this live stuff.
Full disclosure, I find Van The Man to be the most overrated classic rock crooners. This album has done little to change my mind. Incredible arrangements and a beautiful backing band, this album contains all his hallmarks, but for some reason, it just doesn't do it for me. Oh well...
2.6
okej za pozadinu
Good voice, nice instruments but overall I just wasn't that interested. Long and live, so not something I really want to revisit.
Was that all the same song? I can understand how in 1974, a (double!) live album of a very popular artist was a thing people wanted. But in 2025, I don’t think this is essential listening for anyone other than Van Morrison superfans. That’s not even shade - I’ve spent a lot of time listening to shitty bootlegs from shows. It’s great to have high-quality live recordings of your favourite artists. This just wasn’t for me. Also - Volume I? There’s more?!
point8.
Fuck me sideways, a live double album from a musician I'm usually happy to ignore, and will happily return to ignoring very soon.
Eh. It's a good live album, but it feels too soft rock, too Dave Matthews, too Counting Crows. That's definitely not fair in historical context, but I did not enjoy this album.
Åbneren var fin. Men længden er nok en gang en bjørnetjeneste.. Halvanden times live performance, og jeg fik ikke lyst til at deltage.
Just a very mid live album
Fine, but a live double album is usually going to be a chore to get through and this was no exception.
It's live, it's WAY too long, it's fairly dull, and a sizable chunk of the songs are covers. Pass.
Why do white men like this, it's just really boring
Live registraties zijn niet mijn ding. Dat gezegd hebbende, is dit een prima album. Maar verder ook niet heel bijzonder. **
An album that asks the question “Do you want to hear an angry Irishman sing soul?” And I thought the answer was yes, but I was mistaken.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
I don’t think this one is worthy of the list. I don’t find the live versions that compelling and we’ve already heard Van’s bangers.
I bet it would be a cool story to tell about how you were there, back in the day. I just wish it was more entertaining today.
This has nothing to do with me
started enjoyable but boy did it get on my nerves after the first few songs...
I like some of Van Morrison's music, but a live double-album?! The band is great throughout. Morrison is an excellent singer and that also comes through. The first half was not bad. However at about Saint Dominic's Preview I hit the wall hard, I had reached my limit of blue-eyed-Celtic-folk-blues-whatever. After that it was quite a slog to get to the end. How did people at the concerts stay awake? I'm sure Van Morrison fans will love this album. It was at least 40 minutes too long for me.
Van Morrison is a classic artist! The problem is his best songs are a scattering of songs across numerous albums, so I thought that a live album would be great. I am a little disappointed honestly. Some of his songs-Including my favorite Into the Mystic—sounded very late-stage quaalude Elvis. Domino was good, and listening to the Them classic Gloria was fun, especially when he was the originating artist (though the James Brown “Good Gawd” was a bit of an homage/stretch). Favorite track was the very jazzy I’ve Been Working, which had great sax work! Overall, this wasn’t English rap, but I think I would rather listen to his studio albums.
Aika tyyppilevy, toki tähän aikaan (74) sietää ollakin. Kaikki on niin puhdasta, että tulee ”ollaan duunissa” -vaikutelma, vähän kliininen. Mut tunnetta on.
What a slog. The music was alright, a few moments I enjoyed but mostly just fine. Far too long though.
Van Morrison is an okay singer, but this live album which aren't my favourite. It's so long that by the end, it felt tedious to get through.
It's a live album. Not one that seems to be exceptional in any particular way, though the band plays well. But I'm not sure why I needed to listen to it. It was long, kinda boring.
Not it for me
Excuse me, but this album is a no for me. Not that the songs are bad, on the contrary. The biggest problem here is Van Morrison's vocal performance in trying to convey some emotion to the songs. It's embarrassing for all the white men who sing jazz, like Tony Bennett (who, by the way, Morrison could have taken some lessons from). If it were an instrumental album, it would be better.
A double live album from one of the most mid artists in history huh? Why not? With the amount of misses I’ve received lately, why should this be any surprise? I won’t dog on Mr. Van or his white people-appeasing music. But I listened to part 1 of this album, and the band is tight, songs are totally fine. I won’t remember a single part of this tomorrow. Maybe I’ll get to part 2 before I submit this review, but that’s asking a whole lot.
It’s never too late, Van, even after you’ve eclipsed the hour mark, even as you approach 90 minutes…you can stop…any…time now…..
My first live Moorison experience. To be honest, I am a Van Fan, but this side of his music catalog doesn't really do it for me. I fucking love Astral Weeks to death, but he didn't play much of it here. One song that really stood out was Listen to the Lion which reminded me of that album. What made astral weeks so great was how understated it was and the intricate jazz arrangements behind his mystical voice. Some of that is lost in this recording and his bigger production songs which I don't appreciate as much from him. Its why I wouldn't consider Brown Eyed Girl one of his better works... Good listen but dragged on at times - 4/10
actually buddy you could stop anytime now. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
If you cut out all the filler songs, and also fired Van Morrison and hired Wilson Pickett in his place, this might be a decent album.
That voice, that’s why his supposedly marvelous songs aren’t on the radio. It’s like a dog whistle.
El loco canta bárbaro y algunos temas medio jazzeros o más acelerados son buenos, pero me parece realmente aburrido. Me hace acordar a Elton John.
demasiado largo
So long…
2/5
I couldn't finish it. Just didn't like it.
We dont need anymore Van Morrison albums
Please stop now...
Live albums should not be included on this list. Double live albums should ABSOLUTELY not be on this list. At least it’s over and there are only two Van Morisson albums left on the list. Didn’t mind tracks 4, 5, 10 and 15.
Another live album! But with cuts taken from 3 shows (in 3 different theatres) across 3 months, which is sort of cheating. He's somehow at the top of his game and still deathly dull - a tricky feat to pull off!
It's not a great recording. His voice is not in great form. There's a load of cover versions. Other than that ...
why is this on the list?
Ich erkenne nicht die angebliche Klasse.
Not a big fan of Morrison.. but it was a good listen. I love live albums, but this was a lil difficult for me to get through and into.
No, Van, it's never too late to stop. Like when we've already had a couple studio albums, and then get thrown a live album with songs we've already heard. We don't need this shit. Favorite tracks: Wild Children, Saint Dominic's Preview. Album art: Aging rockstar standing on stage, looking weary. That's how I felt seeing this was a live album. 2/5
Not for me
Everything about it is fine but I’m not sitting through 90 minutes of it.
I didn't think I disliked Van Morrison, but that was really annoying to be honest, needless to say unworthy of this list. Listen to the Lion was grinding my gears. Also, come on man, a fucking live album without Brown Eyed Girl or Moondance, what's the point?
I used to like Van Morrison. I liked Them, and his early stuff. Moondance is an absolute classic. Brown Eyed Girl is great. But after a few superlative albums he seemed to go to seed, and just stop trying. Like on this album. Some great songs, and a really good band. But VM just detracts from that. He mumbles. I couldn't listen to Here Comes the Night again. He murders it. Can't even get the tune right. So a grudging 2.
I love so many Van Morrison albums (astral weeks, moon dance, Tupelo Honey (thanks Mike!), Veedon Fleece) so thought I would love this. His voice is great but I didn’t enjoy the music- was almost too straight and loungey at times. Hard to believe he started recording version fleece a few weeks after these shows. Immediately after listening to this I put on Astral weeks to clean my palette.
Pohjois-Irlantilaisen Van Morrisonin ylistetty live-albumi vuodelta 1974 sisältää Morrisonin omien sävellysten lisäksi melko paljon cover-kappaleita. Albumi sisältää ajoittain jopa gospel-henkistä soulia taidokkaan orkesterin soittamana. Genren diggailijoille takuulla merkkiteos. Itselläni menee sinne ”nice to know”-osastolle.
I really want to like Van. I think I should for some reason. Minus hearing one of his classic songs at a time I don't. An entire live album becomes annoying.
music for my parents
It seems that live albums should be on the list because they launched an artist (Live at Budokan, Frampton Comes Alive), or they are definitive collections (Belafonte at Carnegie Hall). In this case, we have neither. Instead, a slack and mumbling Van Morrison churning out some ok standards and generally butchering his better-known work (talk-singing through Into the Mystic was a prime offender). We have Astral Weeks & Moondance deservedly on the list, and some of his late-70’s albums inexplicably also present. This live album is for die hard fans and apologists only.
It's Van! Really strong 2.
When this album came up for me, I was trying to think about what Van Morrison songs I know. I was racking my brain, but all I could come up with was "Brown Eyed Girl." I figured that there was no way that could be the only one, so I looked at his discography on Wikipedia, and I'll be damned, that's the only song of his I know (not counting his appearance on Roger Waters's "Comfortably Numb" on the soundtrack for The Departed). Other than Metallica's S&M, I haven't really enjoyed the live albums I've reviewed, but hopefully this album breaks that trend. I didn't think that this album was bad, but it certainly didn't interest me much. Van Morrison is a good vocalist, the band played really well, and the arrangements were solid, but I didn't find anything about this album that justifies its place on this list to me. The recording quality was great, which I was really shocked by, but this album plods along for an hour and a half, and I can't think of any moment where I felt particularly engaged with it. Maybe my unfamiliarity with his music worked against me, but I was really bored by this album. I'm hoping I get more enjoyment out of the other two Van Morrison albums I'll be reviewing at some point.
Get ready to be punished by Van Morrison.
Considering the amount of terrible white "soul" singers from the British isles, he's probably the best, but man I just can't listen to his grating voice that long. 4 sides of a record is 3 too many.
This wasn't my favorite album of his. I tried to get into it, but there seemed to be a lack of energy, particularly for a live album.
i despise live albums. not even my residual nostalgia from being being sung van morrison as a kid (#browneyedgirlchild) was moved by this. he sure does Just Do That with his voice huh. 1.5
From the band that brought you "that one song they play at every wedding reception that's so long you can go smoke not one but two cigarettes" it's a double-length live album that went on to have multiple other volumes. Why are you playing for so long. Who is this for. I don't even hate it I just don't understand. This feels like music made to be played in the background of people doing something.
Was hard to get into
I found the songs very boring. The sound is not the issue, but the writing was not very fun or engaging and there wasn’t a real hook in any aspect. You could replace Van Morrison, the instruments, the songs, any one of these with something more engaging.
Too shouty. "Into the Mystic" shouldn't be shouty.
Somebody get their Dad off the stage please.
This list does not need a Văn Morrison live album. Astral Weeks, that's your lot, boomers.
its a live album by van morrison
The album was pretty good for a live album but the actual music just wasn't my thing.
I was quite bored by this.
It’s not a good start when I see Van Morrison and inadvertently roll my eyes. I’m not sure why I can’t stand his voice for more that two songs. The band is very good. The tunes have good energy but really liked the Blues covers the most but that’s not saying much. I would put this on over astral weeks any day but again that’s not saying much.
So. Fucking. Tedious. It’s ok, I guess, but I don’t get the hype. And a double album? It’s too much. No thank you.
My third Van Morrison album. I don't think I'm a VM fan, just can't stand the way he shouts every other note. Though this live album was better. I liked the jazzy bluesy stuff on the second half. Great musicians on with him
I'm not listening to this, life is too short for double live albums of artists you don't care for.
Live albums man… I really need to like an artist to truly appreciate their live album. I really enjoy Astral Weeks, I really do but I don’t need to hear an hour and a fucking half of Van Morrison doing what Van does in front of VanFans. This album got weird right? Did you all hear how he sang “Shirt” a thousand times on Help Me? That was fucking weird and I did not care for it. I apprehensive good the horn section is even though I don’t care to hear much horn unless I’m listening to ska which is pretty rare but ska can be cool. I wonder what a Van ska album would sound like… Probably weird. Did you all hear when he was teasing the audience acting like his tongue was literally tied? What a jokester Van was, twat. Holy fuck, Gloria? What a dumb song. I’m not ok, this was hard. Did you all see he released a follow up? Volumes 2, 3 AND 4!!!? What the fuck Van. This was something I did not care for. 2 stars
Standard blues rock fare from everyone's favourite Irish curmudgeon. Impressive arrangements and playing, especially for a live set up.
This the third Van Morrison album. It's also a live album that is a double album over an hour an half long. It's bluesy and I like some of it. I am rounding down though.
2.5
Do we really need to prove that Van Morrison sounds good in a live setting on the 1001 albums you should listen to before you die list? No problem with the album in a vacuum, he’s super talented. More a problem with the album in the context of this list
I'm not particularly interested in listening to recordings of live concerts, and some of these songs went on way too long.
This was more enjoyable than I expected. Due to so many memories, it had been a long time since I listened to any VM. Nice easy walk down memory lane.
2 stars. Not bad for an anti-vax jerk.
Music is nice but these days I really started to dislike the vocals.
I was tired of this after one song. They all sound the same.
I definitely didn't need this to be a double album. I listened to about two thirds of it and had my fill. Band is undeniably very tight, the performance is good, but it doesn't really stir me.
This album is pretty boring to me. I am itching to be done with it. I hate albums that are this long and this similar.
It's a theme of Van Morrison, for me. I encounter, kinda sideways, and I think that there's something for me to explore. When I face him front on, I don't do as well as I would have thought. There is something there, there is interest, but I don't engage deeply or well. I feel compatible emotions, interesting catchy melodies, he is a male voice of some wisdom and hard won experience, but I don't connect. I don't quite know why. I should do more. I'll try again, but for now, like my experience of Kate Bush, I just leave at 2 stars wondering what it is that's not connecting for me.
To be honest, I haven’t listened Van Morrison much before and probably won’t after this either. Good live playing, but songs weren’t that great

This style of bluesy classic rock is just not relatable to me as a millennial I think. Musically it's fine but doesn't grip me and the lyrics don't connect with me at all. I wouldn't mind it being on at a bar or something but I would never seek it out.
Two stars for the backing band, who are far more interesting to listen to than Van himself. It’s not too late to stop listening to this slog.
into the mystic
Love the orchestra and 11 piece band, just wished I liked the vocals more. Fave track: Help Me
No, It's exact time to stop now)
Better than the last vm but not good
A double live album of generic white boy blues yay.
Allemaal net te saai, net het verkeerde genre en net te gedateerd ofzo. Nooit mijn ding geweest.
too long.... sorry... rather be listening to ASTRAL WEEKS.
Boring nothing good on this double album at all
I expect to see a Few of. AB’s studio albums on here, but not this. An OK live album I guess, the crowd noise seems mixed up too high.
was ok... and live.. disappointing I guess
Ok
The inclusion of Van Morrison on this list is of course warranted, but the actual albums chosen have been somewhat questionable, this being the latest example. I keep reading "one of the greatest live albums of all time" but I checked a couple lists and didn't see it in anyone's top 50. This is 90 minute (!!) album is something every Van Morrison fan should hear probably, but not something everyone needs to hear before they die.
Good perfomance. Stopped enjoying it at some point though
He's very talented, and I know how admired he is by so many. His music has influenced countless artists, and he's superb in so many ways. I can't explain to anyone, let alone myself, why I just don't like his music.
Not my cup of tea. A few good tracks but the studio versions sounded better and I found this guys voice to just not mesh with the instrumental. Some very cool moments in songs that were contrasted by poor bridges
This was overly long, a slog, and all the songs sounded the same.
4/10. There should be a slightly higher standard for live albums on this list, because this album has none of the energy you need on a good live album. So it's 90 minutes of Van Morrison, and it sounds worse than his studio stuff.
No one needs to hear this before they die
Did I really "have to listen" to this album?
You can tell he was tired of singing all his old songs. He put zero effort into them. Later in the album, though he got really good song overall, this is a 2 for me.
An LP with a great deal of energy to draw from given the live recording and more than able backing band. Still, to sustain a mix of mostly rote jazz for nearly 100 minutes would be a challenge for any musician, and Van Morrison’s vocals just aren’t enough to keep this thing chugging along for that span of time.
I don’t usually like live albums. This was no exception. First half was ok. The last half was boring.
There are far too many live albums in this list. Some of them are revolutionary and undeniable like Live at Harlem Square or Kick Out the Jams, but this one is nothing special - half of it is covers, and the Morrison songs aren’t any more impressive here than the studio versions (at least the ones from Moondance and Astral Weeks I’m more familiar with). Would have preferred to see Veedon Fleece here instead
Dnf
Eh, Van Morrison is fine I guess
Too long/ not good enough to be so long
Nothing spectacular here. Move along.
Música de boomer y no en el buen sentido. Tiene algunas rolas decentes.
Friends of mine love him, but Van Morrison just doesn't do it for me - especially a live album
I listened to the live version on YouTube. I was more interested in the live orchestra in the background and enjoyed the variety of instruments in the intro to each of the songs. The actual song was not as interesting and most of the songs featured lines of 2-3 words that were repeated a lot. It reminded me of how someone would sing randomly at home while cooking dinner or doing chores, almost nonsensical. There didn't seem to be much diversity in the content of the lyrics among the songs in the album.
Genres: Rock, soul, jazz Formed: 1967 Run time: 18 songs, 1 hour, 32 mins (Double album) The double album was taken from live performances at concerts in the Troubadour in Los Angeles, California, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, and the Rainbow in London. Spotify: Least popular song: 176k Most popular song: >4M plays. Van Morrison sounds as well polished live as he does on studio recordings. Nothing on the album really stood out and this seemed to be reflected in the listening figures, which are all around the 300k mark. If you’re a Van Morrison fan, it’s probably great. If not, then it is a bit too much of the same. Listen Again?: No My Rating: **
Should have stopped
Oh gosh this was LONG. I understand it’s a live album but there’s only so much I can take of it. Any artist with 1+ hours has to prove themselves and as time went on he did the opposite for me. I’m giving a 2 simply because I wasn’t horrified by this, but just not my guy.
Love Van Morrison. Not my favorite album to listen to.
Nothing remarkable here.
Van Morrison is one artist I cannot stand in large doses. His voice and delivery is very unique.
Well that sure did go on, didn't it? Individually the songs are generally okay. Nothing too enjoyable, nothing too terrible. It just didn't need to be so long. So annoyingly long. I have no idea why this needed to be here considering the other Van Morrison albums that made this list.
For a live album this sounds great..I just don’t need this much Van
Meh
Bit of a yawn fest - highlight was a cover of someone else's song which kind of says it all
90 minutes of a really good blues/jazz band being yelled over by a stuttering imbecile. OK, that was a bit harsh, but the degree to which this album is so incredibly NOT essential listening brought out the worst in me. 2 zippers to zip Van's mouth and just let the goddamn band play. 🤐🤐
Apart from the odd Van Morrison track, I've never been a fan of his rock/jazz/blues/soul blend.
I would have preferred a studio album to this live one. It left me disappointed.
Oh good, a 90min-long live album! Featuring songs from the other 2 Van Morrison albums in this book! Fuck off! 2/5.
How many strikes can an album have for me? Live album - boo Double album - double boo Van fucking Morrison - @*&@(!#((!! YER OUT!
Great voice, too many mediocre songs, and his Covid craziness has turned me off from him, even when his songs from half a century ago where good.
Tedious music from a tedious man.
Even though I am not a big fan of Van Morrison as a person, this project is still something I have been very interested in diving into as it made this once humble and small Folk Rock star into a much more thematic and grand artist. As much as I appreciate the song composition overhauls done to each and every track here, I do have to say sometimes it does come across as a bit much and ruins the spirit of the gentle originals. This project isn't all bad as there are plenty of highlights, but also as many others have pointed out there are also a lot of duds that should have worked better than they did. I think Van Morrison didn't really know how to translate some of these songs properly like with Into the Mystic, a heart breaking butchering of his best song, and his over the top drive to everything here only works sometimes and feels a bit corny during most attempts. His little improvisational moments also feel like he is trying to hype his own music up more than the music already does which I thought was a bit odd but okay I guess, polish your dome for yourself man I don't care. I tried to get into It's Too Late to Stop Now, but this was just a messy live project all around. You really need to cherry pick your favorites here because there is no way I am hearing this in full again.
Fucking live album. It is never a good idea. Clapping, I don't want to hear that shit.
Not for me.
I feel disrespected. By Van Morrison for thinking he had a double-live album of worthwhile material and anyone who thought this deserved to be included as one of the "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die."
I often wondered how Van Morrison might sound on an album, less of his big hits, more deep cuts maybe? Well now I know for sure that I'll never be listening to anything by Mr Morrison again out of choice. This album drones on and on, turning a song that could be done in one minute into an interminable torture. There's 90 minutes of Van yeah-yeahing, wo-woing, and mumbling his way through some of the bluest-eyed soul I've ever had the misfortune to hear. Utter and irredeemable dross. One star.
An unappealing singer.
A very boring album that is also easy too long. I can understand why his fans would like to have a live album too listen to, but it does not belong on the 1001 albums list. Even if not considering the controversies that has surrounded him, this album doesn't deserve more than a 1
I don’t get Van at all, and this one did nothing for me either…
It's like I'm trapped in a prom from the 80s without all the hijinks, hilarity, and underage sex.
oh fuck off
I like some Van Morrison and have his album Moondance as a perfect alum (and 5 star rating on this site). I have 18 songs of his "liked" on Spotify. My first thought was "uh oh - a live double album". In my opinion - most (not all) live recordings are generally not as good as studio recordings AND most (not all) double albums usually have a lot of filler. I love live music - but it's almost always better in person than on a recording. But, I have an open mind so let's see how this goes ... It seems like he's trying to do a Sam Cooke or James Brown imitation. I don't feel this adds anything to my enjoyment of the songs I already know. And then he has 6 covers - which are better in their original versions. And It didn't make me want to listen to the songs I don't know. I'm not going to listen to this again and have not "liked" any songs on Spotify (which means they won't show up on my automated playlists). Liked songs on Spotify: 0/12 Rating: 1/5 (should be zero)
Ouvi apenas o disco 1, gostei bem pouco.
It just feels like he stole from black artists and then became extremely famous
A 90 minute two part live album? No! 😩 I love seeing live music, but I hate listening to a live recording.
I repeat myself when under stress I repeat myself when under stress I repeat myself when under stress I repeat myself when under stress
“It’s too late to stop now” is how I feel every time we get another shitty 60/70’s guy, let alone a live album from a 60/70’s shitty guy. Brown Eye Swirl
Yeah, im not listening to this man for 5 hours.
Absolutely no way I'm listening to this all the way through! Yet another example of a piss poor album from the early 1970s clogging up this list. It seems like every time critic Robert Christgau farted during this period, it was written down and treated as gospel. Substandard versions of songs I don't like in the first place? No thanks! Also...hang on, this was only Volume 1?! Dear lord... White Van Man Sings The Blues (Extremely Badly) DNF, unsurprisingly.
2 hours of this is something I don't need in my life. Dnf
This concert seems like a chore
dont make me listen to a double live album
Livealbum
I like some Van Morrison, but this was bad.
Made worse by the fact it was a rambling double album, it wasn't even the best versions of these songs.
I don't like it
First listen
Absolute dirge
This live album felt flat in a lot of ways, Morrison was low energy, the band was soloing with scales, and the songs didn’t give it up in major ways, like in Caravan where he barely even scats!
Everyday I open this tab and I say the same thing. It’s days like this, where I see a LIVE VAN MORRISON record, that it begins to feel like the sweet release of quitting would be just what the doctor ordered. This album cover is the amalgamation of every stupid music trope I hate, but we’ve come this far. Too late to stop now. Ain’t Nothin’ You Can Do - First song and we’ve already got a loosened bow tie and a lean against a piano. This stinks but the windows are sealed and I’m forced to marinate in the stench emitted by this song. There ISN’T anything that I can do. Warm Love - The stationary stones. Fronted by Dick Bagger. Into the Mystic - Hey, leave the mystic alone. They may be a shyster and a scam artist, but you can’t just go into them, magic school bus style. This is your RECENTLY divorced dad doing karaoke. Like this shit happened on Thursday, and this is Friday night at the local karaoke bar. If I wasn’t laughing, I’d be crying. These Dreams of You - The sitcom intro horns. The goofy ass piano. This is live music for people who are only alive by the biological definition. This SUCKS. I Believe to My Soul - Good voice, but horns? This is the best song so far, without a doubt, and it’s white guy blues. The end is nigh. I’ve Been Working - Alright, we’re getting somewhere. No, shut up, Van. More solos. Never mind, we’re just in a lame Starsky & Hutch funk jam. Help Me - A cry for help of the highest order. His vocal yelps are so funny, that I can’t even hate it. I can imagine people just sort of stifling laughter as he’s gunning it white boy style. Wild Children - Name dropped celebrities? ✅ Chilled out (boring) lounge guitar? ✅ Weird grumbling ✅✅✅. We’re back in our rut. Domino - OOOHHHHAAAHHHOOOO Domino’s pizza. Dominos feel much like diners in the way that old white fucks think they’re cool. Guess what fellas? None of this is cool. If I was at this concert, I would’ve assaulted an usher to be whisked away from this event. I Just Want to Make Love to You - Those ivories are being tickled. For better or worse, I am a heterosexual, so I can only imagine the show being in the other foot. If I was serenaded with this song, and called the ace of spades, the result would not be “making love.” It would probably be a restraining order or an organized hit on the singer carried out by a mafioso. I would then flee to Barbados to live out my days as an outlaw. The one who wouldn’t be loved. Bring it On Home to Me - The boringest white guy blues song going and it’s one again of the seductive variety. We’re also apparently on Disc 2. Each passing second ticks us closer to the end of this. Saint Dominic’s Preview - I am running out of adjectives. Have I used ‘abysmal?’ Unlistenable? Tacky? Embarrassing? Valueless? All apply. Take Your Hand Out of My Pocket - Anti-tax anthem. Actually it’s more sterile “blues.” Will calling it “whites” catch on? No this song is actually about - get this - women who just want your money. An earth shattering concept that is most definitely one of the many valid reasons this album appears on this list. Listen to the Lion - Did he honestly say “for da lion.” He’s doing reggae voice. Ladies, gentlemen and non-binary friends and well wishers. It’s over. This is top 10 worst ever. Jah feel? Here Comes the Night - Into the Night, Into the night. Gloria - Makes me believe in god even less. Caravan - Van on vans. They have a violin, viola and cello player? There are way too many instruments here. For some dumb white blues record? Fucking end this. Cyprus Avenue - One last time through the piano laden whites perpetuated by the van man. He’s not making it easy. This is a horrible song and they’re obviously completely out of steam. Who is amped for this? What is wrong with you? That guy has to be a plant. HEY GUYS, ISN’T VAN MORRISON GOOD?! I can play three chords on this old guitar. Sounds just like Van Morrison in here - Dan Reeder. I was waiting for a swat team to dispel tear gas amongst the crowd and interrupt this. If Van Morrison was a van, he’d be the poorly conceived Mazda MPV. Take me a million miles from this. I think I have to go listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan or something, to prove to myself that the white folks can create reasonable blues music. If you were at this concert, my heart weeps for you, but considering I had to listen to this in its entirety in a random Thursday in October, I feel I am almost as aggrieved. Cast this into the purifying fires of hell. Or at least burn a couple copies at a scrapyard littered with the non-functioning remnants of the Pontiac Montana. Let the motor oil consecrate and create anew. 0.5 HIGHLIGHTS: When he got all worked up and yelled. Hilarious every time.
Fuck Live Albums
Live album
It’s not that he’s now a tin foil hat conspiracy theorist and anti-vaxer, it’s just that this album is dull. He takes what should be a thrilling set of soul and jazz songs and somehow turns it into a snooze fest. At no point does he seem to be engaging with the audience in any meaningful way and the whole thing just shambles on without ever grabbing me. This is a double album, and apparently only the first volume. I’ll take a pass on the rest.
Painful to get through. His vocals are horrific.
I like him less now
Not on Apple Music.
generic boomerrock Bra gitarr dock, men för tråkigt
same, no likey
Another live album....why? Like Van Morrison is pretty great, but I have no desire to ever listen to live albums.
I know he is beloved and everyone likes him but I do not like him at all. The live versions are even worse. I could barely listen to the entire album.
This is obviously a performer who's having a great time and is completely in his element as a bandleader. I just don't like it. It's like he took soul music and infused it with the worst kind of blues. Not for me, though I can recognize how it would be great if you like the music.
Live album.
Its ok
Not interesting to me, dull blue eyed soul, unimaginative
Not a fan of live albums. Also, too much trumpet 😂
Remove live albums from the list, did not listen.
Fucking hell. Even on the best day Van Morrison feels like a novelty act to me. That dreadful voice, just a mumbling nightmare of an artist. Inarticulate and annoying. Here an hour and a half asshole. No thank you
Ugh.
Hell no.
He's got a good band behind him, but the music and the vocals left me very disappointed. The songs are indistinguishable and his vocal style grew ever more insufferable as the album wore on. (I remember Bring it on Home and whatever song was about a Lion being especially unbearable -- just awful vocals). None of the songs struck me as different enough or memorable in any way; I think you could put the songs together in a blender and what you get out would be the same result. His songwriting palette is small. At best dull, at worst ear-piercing.
It's a Van Morrison album. Ugh! It's a live album. Ugh! It's a double album. Ugh! It's a double live album. Ugh! It's double live Van Morrison album. Ugh! Fuck Van Morrison!
Live albums are in rare occasions really good or prefered over studio albums in my book. With all these Covers this album didnt felt necessary on this list. Van Morrison is not a bad artist at all but this live album bored me and felt dragging to the end. (1.5/5.0)
Meh
Too lame to give a fuck
It's too late now for me to listen to you.
Hate a live album, unless it's exceptional. This was boring.
I dislike van morrison and found this overly long and shouty. The bluesy band were good but he's still a pig.
It's a multi-part live album. No thank you.
Unnecessary and way too long. Even gentle songs like Into the Mystic get butchered by Morrison's live shout-singing and chirping staccato delivery. This was a real chore to get through.

Is it really too late to stop now? There are so many points where Van Morrison could’ve stopped. Unfortunately he took none of them. That Sam Cooke cover was criminal. Ugh. 3/10
Another album of live music. Still not a fan. And this time I can't even really say I'd like it all that much if it were the recorded songs. These songs just don't interest me. Many of them are repetitive. None of them are terrible, just nothing worth listening to again. On top of that, this is a double album, over an hour and a half long. That drops this from a 2 to a 1. Best song: Saint Dominic's Preview
Live double album, wow. It may be too late for Van Morrison to stop now, but I can and I will.
The best stuff on here is like Credence doing astral weeks covers. Those songs are great, but the live performance doesn't bring much to them. The majority of it sounds like Van Morrison doing Credence covers though, and it's god awful. The choogle levels are through the roof. I'm curious what the case for including this one is - some live albums are definitive releases either from bands that weren't great in the studio or where live improvisation is central to the music (grateful dead, Allman brothers, lots of jazz), or canonical recordings that're essentially high energy greatest hits collections from singles artists that capture their live talent and charisma in a unique way (James Brown, Al Green), or breakout commercial hits (cheap trick, Peter Frampton) but this is just worse versions of songs that at best show he could sing well.
