Reviews (page 2 of 7)

I thought this was really strong top to bottom. He had great presence and the band did a great job keeping the songs interesting musically. Better than the other Tim Buckley album we heard, which I also liked.

Perfect mix between folk blues and new wave. Excellent for musicians.

Excellent Rock/Blues album, reminiscent of the doors LA woman. Killer vocals with huge range. Funky, jamming instrumentals supporting lyrical styles from from detailed stories to wild howls to playful skat. Tight guitar work on the likes of Hong Kong bar. Not a bad song. All new to me. 4.5

Great mood music.

Sweet surrender is great. I like that sexy vibe of 70s. Obvious and naive.

Great voice, great songwriter

Funk-rock. Me ha gustado bastante. Venga, le pongo un 5.

Muy bueno, en serio.

5/5 - I had heard of Tim Buckley but never listened to any of his catalog. This is a great album.

V good rocky album

Great album will definitely be added to my rotation

Great album. Each song needs a little bit to get going but all worth it

This is superb. Loved the energy and tunes. They know how to play properly as a band and the album feels like a proper performance. One to keep playing for the future

I don't understand the negative ratings; I thought it was really good

Very cool

Some good stuff here

weird, wild, unexpected

Quite a groovy funky album. One I’ll revisit

There's some dated stuff, obviously, but I like the funk evolution from that 60s album of his we had. There's some life here, and the album doesn't outstay its welcome. 3.8

Sorry Tim Buckley...I wasn't familiar with your game. This shit rocks....like country funk or something. Need to dig into this dude some more.

muy bueno el tim

Wow, this is one of those guys I've heard of but never really heard. His voice is something! Sometimes sounds a little like a goofy voice, like a fake announcer, but the range is impressive. This album is sometimes dirty, but sometimes lifted by some pretty clean orchestral parts. Reminds me a bit of soft parade.

Much better than the folkier Tim Buckley album on this list. Terrible album cover though. 3.5/5.0: Very Good

is this the same tim buckley? this was wildly different from the last album i had from him. this one was very funky and while it was a bit over the top at times, it was enjoyable

There is a lot to like here but no single song that stands out to me. 4 stars or B-.

The second Tim Buckley album in the last couple of weeks - I have enjoyed both. This one seemed a bit more bules/rock than folk.

476/1089 - Cheating is bad. The soul-influence was cool, Buckley was a very eclectic guy.

A little rambling and raw, but an enjoyable listen that I’ll probably revisit

Really enjoyed it.

I don't know too much of Tim Buckley but have heard a little and was coming into this expecting something more folky . Hence this bluesy, funky R&B was something of a revelation and certainly not an unwelcome one! It sounded in places like it shared some kinship with The Doors, particularly LA Woman and that's always going to be a positive in my book.

Tim Buckley foregoes his folk and singer-songwriter style for a more lecherous and sleazy take on rock n roll. Imbuing the power of Jim Morisson into his vocals and presence, this record reads like Hey-Day Doors music (Which I suppose WAS this era lol). The music itself is pretty adventurous and all over the place. Moving from Rhythm& Blues to Funk Rock and psychedelic jams, Tim himself becomes a creature possessed on "Devil Eyes". I think what ultimately holds me back from really resonating with the music more are the lyrics. For the most part it doesn't bother me as much as any other sleazy rock star singing about lustful encounters, but "Sweet Surrender" being about actively cheating on your partner rubs me the wrong way, despite the song itself rocking pretty hard. So yeah idk, I thought this was pretty good but not what I like Tim Buckley for.

I really liked the album musically. The lyrics are apparently rather sexually provocative and at times chauvinistic and racist? I didn’t listen to the lyrics well enough but other reviews suggested that.

i would have give. it a solid 3, but the last two songs were so good, i’m giving it a 4

It's pretty funny that the first album I hear from Tim Buckley is the one where he decided to tell everyone that he *fucks*. Honestly kinda respect it.

Enjoyed it way more that I thought I would. Get On Top is a banger. The song about licking toes caught me off guard.

Not hid best album, but this man has a phenomenal voice

I didn't know anything about Tim Buckley before listening to this album. Apparently, Greetings From L.A. isn't typical of his work, but it was good fun overall.

This one is pretty fun to listen to, except when it gets boring, it really gets boring. Other than that, I heard a saxophone and I knew it was going to be an awesome album. Overall, it was a pretty good album to listen to and I might listen again, who knows?

Favourite Songs: Move With Me Sweet Surrender

About as great of a tracking of our woke society as any scientist could produce, but with music. (Un)fortunately, I grew up in the 70s and this music wasn't condemned to such an extent back then. But here we are...I am condemned to do dirty-dancing to these tracks (if I weren't so old). I am not going to apologize (at least not in respects to Buckley's music output. This is still one of my favorite albums from back then. Get back on top of me woman...yep. 4 sweaty balls stars.

Really good music, a bit like the doors. Lyrics, well....

Rating: 8/10

nog wel fire

I didn't listen to Tim Buckley until getting on this site. I think this is my 3rd album and I've really liked all of them. He was a creative writer. Really dig it.

I'm in L A too

I guess making heat is genetic. 3.5/5

Great Songs: Get On Top, Make It Right Good Songs: Move With Me, Nighthawkin', Devil Eyes, Hong Kong Bar, Mid Songs: Sweet Surrender Bad Songs:

So i feel like I’ve had a larger than normal concentration of Tim Buckley in my first 250 albums, and i was not really interested by any of his previous works. So I was coming into this one thinking “ugh, not again” - but left really pleasantly surprised. This one doesn’t seem a lot like his other albums on this list, and it works for me. Really groovy tunes and just songs that were more my speed.

I've only listened to Tim Buckley's best of and that seemed to veer much more to his folkier and proggier side. This is a lot more upbeat and was a surprise. I found myself enjoying it a lot more on a first listen than I though I would, and I'll be listening again.

Having read that this was his sexy funk phase I was prepared for the worst, but actually it came across more like the groove laden sound John Martyn has. I really enjoyed the sound and a lot of the instrumentation was really nice. Solid didn't go on too long. I get the feeling the lyrics are pretty naff but I didn't really notice too many of them.id like to give it another listen and see if it improves on further goes. I think it might.

Not refuting the quality of this album - it’s just not my thing. I quite enjoyed it as I heard it but wouldn’t go back to it.

Seeing a second shot at Tim Buckley on the list did not invoke hopes of greatness. I'd heard Tim a tiny bit before while checking out Jeff's genetics. Too folky without the depth of his offspring. Then I heard another on this list and it was too thin for me. I could see how someone would like it, but it's not for me. So, I reluctantly hit play and was immediately surprised how different this was. It's more rock with some funky underpinnings. The musicians are tight. His voice shows a lot more depth and range. Losing that thin folk-y voice is a huge upgrade. It allows his vocal abilities to shine. For the first time, I hear some similarities between father and son. While I know they didn't live or work together ever, the genetics bleed through. On first listen, I didn't really catch most of the lyrics and that turns out to be the best way to listen to this. Ignore the lyrics for the most part. I'm not as offended as a lot of folks here seem to be. But, for a noted and much-vaunted songwriter, it is surprisingly immature to have such an abundance of cheap sex talk. I'll probably listen to this again. A lot of the music is interesting. I'd give this a 6 or 7 (on a much better 1-10 scale) but I'm going to go with a 4. Listenable and fun without too much inspection of the lyrics.

Not sure how this is the same guy who made an album I rated one star and compared to Ren Faire music! This album was very enjoyable- has a roadhouse blues feel to much of it. What a pleasant surprise!

Just some good ol’ 70s rock! Love the funky soul influences.

8.25 ★★★★

Ha ha I actually liked this. Really interesting arrangements and Buckley’s voice sounds great.

I typically don't enjoy albums that are 100% about knockin' boots, and I definitely don't usually enjoy songs about philandering. But across the Buckley albums we've had so far, this is some of the best psych rock I've heard. It has all the best elements of The Doors plus more interesting vocals and some more folk/jazz elements. Get on Top really had some strong Doors parallels and also sounded dangerously similar to Gypsy Woman - which is hilarious because while Gypsy woman was my favorite song on Happy Sad and had the fewest # of plays on Spotify, Get on Top has more plays than most of this album. I guess I'm the only consistent one out here. 4.5 rounded ... hm ... down

greetings from lou

Le père de l’autre! J’ai aimé ça en écoute semi distraite mais je ne crois pas que j’y retournerais tant que ça

So Jeff Buckley's dad is a massive horndog. Tracks. Good sleazy blues if you're into that sort of thing. Better than I thought it would be.

# Album Name: Greetings from LA # Artist: Tim Buckley # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Funky finger licking good album from the 2nd best buckley. Very enjoyable. Which im pleased to see considering his last was a dud for me. I enjoyed the feel of the music and the funk. Great stuff. Cant say i noticed most of the dodgy lyrics. I must be showing my age. # Top Tunes: move with me / get on top / nighthawk / devils eyes / HK bar # Would I listen to it again? Yes

Parts of this album goes harder than it has any right to. 7 ?s out of 10 lizard wizards

It’s been over a year since I reviewed a Tim Buckley album (Goodbye and Hello), and over two years since I reviewed Happy Sad (that review that says “Crappy/Bad” will randomly pop into my head and make me chuckle). I thought Happy Sad was fine, but I liked Goodbye and Hello quite a bit more. I’m hoping that I’ll enjoy Greetings From L.A. just as much as I enjoyed Goodbye and Hello, if not more. I’d place Greetings From L.A. between Tim’s other two albums on this list, but it’s closer to Goodbye and Hello in terms of quality. Like Goodbye and Hello, I thought Tim Buckley’s vocals on this album were great, and there were some excellent arrangements on this album as well. Of the eight songs here, I only thought one of them was a dud, and even though these songs all brought something unique and different to the table in terms of their sound, the psychedelic rock sound tied them all together nicely (Wikipedia says this album is closer to funk, which I strongly disagree with). Lyrically though, this album wasn’t nearly as good as Goodbye and Hello. There were some interesting themes to some of the lyrics on this album (more on that below) that just weren’t my jam. Those lyrics weren’t enough to take away from my enjoyment of the musical components, but enough to drag the overall album down a bit for me. I’ve included my notes for each individual song below: “Move With Me” started off fine, but I really liked it when the backing vocals kicked in. Tim’s vocals were great, and the piano and saxophone sounded really good too. Apparently, Tim enjoyed life’s carnal pleasures quite a bit though, and he’s not afraid to sing about his love for black women. That’s certainly an artistic choice to include in your lyrics. Is this whole album going to be about sex? Man, Tim guy loves to get laid and then sing about it. I do like the percussion and the organ on “Get On Top,” and it’s got a very fun sound overall. The vocals are great once more, and the bass line is slick. I love Tim’s little vocal fills are really fun too. We’re at “Sweet Surrender,” and Tim is batting a perfect 1.000 on sex songs on this album. His vocals are great once again though, and the string arrangement is excellent. Despite this variation in sound, this is still a really cohesive album. Second side of the album starts off with a big shift from the end of the first side, and I think that “Nighthawkin’” was the weakest song on the album. The vocals are good, but that’s it. Thankfully, “Devil Eyes” as better than Nighthawkin’. I liked the chord progression that was used, and the percussion was good too. The vocals and organ playing were great as well, and I was happy to hear more of those weird vocal fills. “Hong Kong Bar” was awesome. I loved the little blues guitar riff, and the handclaps add a raw feeling to the song that I enjoyed. And to close out the album, we’re back with another sex song. Well played Tim, I thought you’d gotten that out of your system on side one of this album. I do like the sound of this song though, and when the strings kick in, it sounded really great. There’s another batch of really good vocals to close this album out as well. Greetings From L.A. was short of five stars for me, but musically, it was great, and I really enjoyed Tim Buckley’s vocals. I’d never heard of Tim before I started this project, but I’m glad that I got to listen to three of his albums that all brought different things to the table.

Good, but all the songs sound almost exactly the same.

On the surface and initial glance, it just seems like a jazz musician trying to mainstream himself with some steamy energy. But there are some really fun and different things going on beneath the surface. While the instrumentation is a standard set-up for a country/honkytonk sound, the structure is not at all set up in any sort of standard. Clearly the jazz influences for the structural flow are utilized here and I think it opens up the space for Tim's vocals to do a number. And I mean do a number. Maybe, depending on what you like or what you are used to, his voice may not sound good to your ears. I wont be passing judgement on what is good and what is not, however, this is not the same kind of vocal argument that people like to talk about when considering some like say, Bobby Dyl. Whether you like the sound or not, Tim Buckley's vocals are very complex and impressive. When the album first started I thought he was just going to be singing country. Nope. Because that high end goes nasty. And is difficult to do and switch between so easily. Also - his country vocals alone were some of the cleanest and clearest I've heard from the VAST majority of male country singer. Come at me, we'll talk. I'll be right. Add in the ridiculous vocal control needed to combine that with his high-end chest/falsetto horny sounds? Pretty wild. A little screechy. Entirely impressive. Also consider that the way he sings on this album, and the country tone in general isnt really at all how he sounds on early albums? C'mon. Truly just being objective here. Gotta give credit when its due. 8.1/10 4

FUCKIN’ YEEEEEAHHHH! Awesome bluesy, rock and roll! Tremendous.

Endlich wieder etwas Anhörbares! Handgemacht mit Heart & Soul!

Very good

This quirked up white boy horny as hell! He’s somehow both scrawny Tom Jones and chiller Scott Walker, but I dig it.

One of the first singer's who wrote his own songs, a war protester, died young.

I was expecting something like Fela Kuti's live albums - but it was different. And better. I was not sure how I feel about Tim's vocals at first, but they grew on me. Greetings from L.A. offers a big range of variety in music, while still feeling like a singular artistic statement.

For the first three tracks I thought this was going to be a new addition to my collection, but my enjoyment of the album began to fall away as it got closer to the end. Nevertheless, it's a solid set of tunes from an artist I had never listened to before, and it's getting four stars from me.

I liked it. I had familiarity with Jeff Buckley, but I was unaware that his dad Tim was also a singer songwriter some of his lyrics. Remind me of pig pen from the Grateful Dead. I will explore some of his other albums.

The last Tim Buckley album I got on this list was dog shit. Wasn't expecting much going into this but damn I was impressed. White boy kinda nice with the sauce.

Funky, groovy, fun.

This album was awesome. What a surprise. Had a few songs that I thought were Harry neillson. Very cool and definitely on the relisten list. Great bass. Great lyrics and vocals.

If you want a perfect view of early 70s folk rock this is the album to start with

simpatico, molto west coast anni 70 vibes. l'ultima mamma mia che banger

Nice and enjoyable album!

This is something else.

This one was fun, and I would love to have heard this live in 1972. The best part is Chuck Rainey on bass, laying it down! Everything else builds on that.

High 3/low 4, interesting you can hear a good bit of Tim's vocal mannerisms in Jeff. Fun grooves and music but not the biggest fan of Tim's voice/delivery

Not too bad.

A good album, I liked Nighthawking and Make It Right.

Note really listened to TB before, and was not sure what to expect. A lot more funky than anticipated. Enjoyed most of the guitar playing, 'Hong kong' etc... Lyrics were a bit seedy and outdated.

Sometimes pure poppycock, yet always interesting and worth multiple plays. I recommend being drunk on whiskey when listening to it.

I think this is my favorite that I’ve listened to from Buckley. It’s a weird, strangely horny, wild album from a misunderstood artist. I wonder if this was his “fuck it let me try this” album, as it’s so different and funkier than his earlier efforts. I’m sure he had no chance of widespread radio play with this one, but maybe he didn’t care at that point.

Very interesting album, felt a little busy at parts. At its best captivating at its worst confusing

Good album but it felt like something was missing

I really enjoyed this one. Great mix of styles and influences, not the stereotypical singer/songwriter acoustic drivel. Some real depth here.

Solid album, every song on it is good. It didn't immediately earn a favorite status, but maybe with more time spent it could. For now I like it well enough and would listen to it again. Glad this project gave me an excuse.

Awesome, had the potential for hard rock

A new artist to me but some fun tunes. Very 70s blues vibe for sure.

Täähän oli aika hiton hyvä! Yllättävää että diggailin näin paljon. Hyvää tämmöstä jytähenkistä folkrokkia. 4/5

A fun variety pack of stuff

Unique voice that died too early.

Like this better than the earlier folky hippy stuff

Such a great talent, taken from us too soon

Favorite Songs: Move With Me / Hong Kong Bar

9/10 Tim Buckley, I was woefully unfamiliar with your game. I forgive you for abandoning Jeff Buckley as a child now. This album rips. It has so much influence from the powerful rock artists of the time but also feels like it combines big band with that same late 60s/early 70s sound. Gives me some CCR energy but with more edge. Will be coming back to this again. Favorite Song: Nighthawkin’

Finally an album totally new to me that I really enjoyed! Steely Dan-core so an easy sell for me, liked the distinctive vocals and rumbling energy.

I really enjoyed this album! It sort of sounds like if Geese got a studio contract in the 70s lol. Very good listen, definitely going in my normal rotation!

Great sound but nothing unique. His son was better.

На Sweet Surrender я наконец въехал в Тима Бакли. Откровенные и мрачные песенки.

Went in thinking Americana, left feeling satisfied with some good funky funky. Not world class by any means, but a nice 40 minute hit to brighten the day a bit. Low 4

‘Greetings From LA’ of course the famous first words of Len Houmous when he was Britain’s representative at Eurovision in ‘92. Always one to have a bit of a laugh! It really through everyone. Fortunately the Dutch saw the funny side of it - which was lucky. They were in a really bad mood that year. 4.0

That was a solid record. Tim has a unique but great voice.

Loved it

Fun springtime music. Will be listening again

raro, me encanta

I enjoyed this!

Little Feat meets Chris Isaac; liked Sweet Surrender the best.

Is it any surprise this came out at the same time as Deep Throat?

Rare treat

Very mellowy

Clearly jazz inspired Crooning soulfully upon Care free edgy rock

Actually, Pet Shop Boys, actually is a really good album. It’s A Sin with its up tempo synsonic base beat and catchy lyrics is the best song, followed by the equally rhythmic Heart. S-h-o-p-p-i-n-g is missable, but the rest of the songs are listenable. Album flows well enough to go (3.6*s)

This is a tough one. Really cool music. Interesting voice. Raunchy ass lyrics.

Крутой альбом. Вокалист напоминает Роберта Планта из Led Zeppelin. Мне понравилось. Отличный фанк-рок от сингера-сонграйтера. 4. Точно не тот альбом, который нужно послушать до своей смерти.

Musically fun and with excellent vocals, this was a very enjoyable one to listen to.

This is a strong veer from Tim's usual shitty folk fare...This is more bluesy/funky mixed with rock and sexually charged lyrics. It surprised the hell out of me. This was actually the most tolerable album Tim ever made. Favourite songs: Get on Top, Nighthawkin', Move With Me Least favourite songs: Make It Right 4/5

I had a really fun time with this one. I’ll definitely continue listening to it in the future

What a record. Love it.

first listen it's definitely groovy

Pretty good

Vibrant. Horny. Intense, impassioned, largely incomprehensible vocals, luxurious strings, and lots of libido, horniness and funkiness

A fun, funky and horny set (a lot of songs are about sex including one that mentions licking toes!) of jazzy rock songs with lots of jamming. The band has a big sound, including strings! Tim Buckley brings a lot of energy with his vocals on this album. I can’t believe this is the same guy that made the sleepy album “Happy Sad” that was also on the 1001 list. The whole band sounds like they’re having fun in the studio and it’s infectious. This was a pleasure.

Never heard of this guy. His voice is weird, but I really enjoyed most of the songs. Listed to the album a few times.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” - me when I saw this was my album for today. I have had two other Tim Buckley albums thus far, and I’m honestly shocked to see that he has at least three on here. Lord tell me he doesn’t have more. I could name ten albums not on this list more deserving of his spots than he is. I sincerely hope my listen makes me feel better about this album because I do not feel good about it right now. We’ll see. ~~~~~~~~~~ Where has this version of Tim Buckley been this whole time???? Goddamn. He was energetic, he was alive, he had soul and a full band, he sang his heart out and then some. Sure the lyrical content was questionable at times but whatever. This was such a departure from the prior two albums that I damn near want to give this five stars. But I won’t overreact. I’ll give it four. That’s what it probably deserves. This reminded me of early CCR. Big “Susie Q.” vibes, if you see what I’m getting at. High energy folk rock with some soul and some kick. A fun time, made even more fun if you had to suffer through two of his lesser albums. Four stars. Thank goodness. Standout Tracks: Move with Me, Get On Top, Nighthawkin’, Devil Eyes

Really enjoyed this tbh what a fun time

4 - Really enjoyed and quite a performance. Something's stopping this from being higher and I'm not sure what.

70’s rock

Jarenzeventigsingersongwriterkrijsmuziek?

3,5 ster.

This was a bit of a surprise to be honest. I’ve heard of Tim Buckley as being the father of Jeff and similar demise. I suppose I was expecting more Jeff than this sex crazed Oedipal funk machine. Lotta lotta mamma love going on but I draw the line at licking stretch marks and between the toes. Don’t care if it’s a celebration of mature woman hood or just sicko Tarantino territory. Less is more apart from those funky Latin vibes!

I liked this quite a bit, probably because of the horns and piano. It had a fun honky tonk sort of vibe.

Great variety. Excellent guitar

I am incredibly mad at the fact this was picked instead of "Starsailor", not because Starsailor is an incredible, genre-defying masterpiece, but because the reviews for it would have been really funny to read. This is very safe Tim Buckley. You can tell he was just goofing around on this one. No avantgarde mind-meltingness, just one of the best vocalists of all time flexing on everybody for 40 minutes. I can respect it. Still would have preferred Starsailor or Lorca though. 4/5.

It's no Starsailor but it gets the job done. RIP TIM BUCKLEY, you would have loved posting on r/ihavesex

Groovy little album. Took me a bit to get into, but I would probably listen to it again. Very 70s.

++: Move with Me, Get on Top, Nighthawkin', Devil Eyes +: Sweet Surrender, Hong Kong Bar, Make It Right 9,0/10

this album is strange to me. for fans of buckley like myself its not as interesting as his early works and for people who dont like him its still too weird for them. its not bad but it isnt a favorite of mine like most of his other stuff. 7/10

did not expect the funkiness of this album at all get on top is awesome

Very good

Second Buckley album on this list, this time by Buckley Senior. I didn't even know father was a singer as well, and he had as tragic story as the son. The record itself was a really fun trip, Tim's vocal was pretty good at times, but mostly I was impressed by the instrumentation. Amazing riffs, melodies and guitar solos. Very solid album, I will give a four for now, but let it be known it's a really strong four.

Great music. Sex funk, another new genre for me.

Really enjoyed this.

My favorite album of his. Totally different in style from his previous stuff it shows the range of his vocals and flat out rocks.

Tim Buckley has a great, distinctive and unusual voice that uses a lot of technique and may not be everyone's cup of tea. Personally I love it, I always remember being gobsmacked when I heard a track called 'I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain' on a comp a friend did for me years ago. Although much of his music has a jazz-folk tinge, this particular album has a much more dirty funk rock sound, with risque lyrics. He's uncompromising, which often veers into sheer self indulgence but to a degree it is expected, given his particular brand of art-rock. It's not his best album, but it is a very good one.

Yeah funky cool and breezy highly enjoyable.

I surprised myself on how much I enjoyed this one. I'll give it another listen some time.

I actually enjoyed this album, I'm not the biggest fan of ol Timmy from the ones we have gotten on this list, but this one got me. I think the vibe of LA with a more rockish type energy on some of these songs is what did it. He still goes into some spots that can I can't really follow, but for the most part I found myself connecting.

Another from Buckley, Sr. and it's great. Some really interesting stylistic choices on here, which I'm just now realizing remind me of Tom Waits, but just not as cheesy. There was a lyric on here that really struck me, on "Move With Me" he's signing about a girl drinking alone in a bar and says "what a waste of sin." Not sure why I found that line so profound but I really like it. Tim Buckley definitely has the sauce, all three that we've had are four and above for me. Keep 'em coming. Favorite tracks: Move With Me, Get On Top, Hong Kong Bar. Album art: An inset picture of the LA cityscape, quite hazy too. Nothing crazy but the bold yellow backdrop is nice. 4/5

Album 432 of 1001 Tim Buckley - Greetings From L.A. Rating : 4 / 5 2 days in a row with a Tim Buckley album. The music gods are trying to push him on me. This one is much more upbeat and enjoyable. Maybe not something I'm going to get an urge to listen to again but a fine album. This list really likes Tim Buckley. His story is an interesting one.

This is pretty good! Goodness you can hear the similarities in his and Jeff’s voices! Some of the lyrics and themes are a little dated looking back now from 2024, however, the music sounds good and his voice is good so I don’t mind this.

Not as good as his son, which isn't often how these things go, but pretty solid. Much more funk and heft than I had expected, given his reputation, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Interesting collaborations as well, which might explain the change from his more delicate early work

Cool funk-inspired stuff, very different to the other album I've had from him (Happy Sad). Lyrics are pretty weak but the music and overall performance is strong enough to make up for that

Slightly dated but fun bluesy rock and good voice. Pleasant surprise as I had never heard of him.

Ok yeah Jeff’s dad. Died at 28. - Good voice. Good jam. Sax solo. I like this 2) funky af 3 is every song about sex? 4 good jam again Hong Kong bar good shit Strong finish

Very interesting and unexpected album, combining elements of funk/psych/folk/indie/r&b. Fun mix, wouldn't say it sounds too 'serious' if that makes sense, but a good combination of tracks. 4.5

Funny that an album just as erotic as Different Classes would come next. Tim Buckley wants to have some sex and he doesn't seem to care much who it's with. I've heard Happy Sad and Starsailor so I'm familiar with how incredible a singer Tim was but this is a whole new style that's just as impressive. Words won't do his vocal performance justice but I'll say I think across the 3 albums I've heard he has a solid argument for best rock singer ever. These songs drip with energy, total joy to listen to. My main critique is that as nice as this is to hear once, it's so jam-focused I can't imagine myself coming back to the full album without being a bit annoyed at it's length. It's a vibe-album I suppose, definitely not totally timeless, and the quirks get a little old by the full length of the album.

Fucking groovy

Pretty fun and enjoyable.

very wow. more wild than his son. they are both unique singers with a lot of personality, sharing good aspects but still unalike in good ways.

Wow this most certainly was an album

Lots of yelling, but pretty good background music as I did my taxes 7.5/10

Favorite was "Get On Top"

Pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this album… Rockabilly type vibe With rollicking vocals and musicianship …. And of course, there seem to be a running theme through this album. How should I put it… Oh, I know, Sex … Had never heard of Tim Buckley, but I liked it so much. I pulled up the rest of this catalog and listen to a little bit… Rest of his work, not so much… But I did like this one!

See now this is what im fuckin talking about. This here is why i wanted to do this project, to find music i never would have found. Great tunes, great instruments. At one point he said "sticking my tongue between those stretch marks" Hell yeah

Wow, my third Tim Buckley album. None of them have really blown me away, and I know he certainly wasn't big during his lifetime, so it's surprising to see so many entries with his name on them. This one was probably my favorite of the three, though. The guy himself seemed shitty, and the lyrics here seem to back that up. But the music itself is pretty groovy. Some real funky basslines, to be sure. The whole thing is almost a little much, and certainly would have been if it went on any longer than its 40 minutes. But as it stands, it was a decent listen that I bopped along to as I worked. As with the last Tim album I received, this is closer to a 3.5, but again, I will oh-so-generously bump it up because I'm having a good day.

Get this man a glass of water because he’s thirsty as fuck. 7/10

Hey this was pretty good. Pleasant surprise for me cuz I have no clue who this dude is. Good complex songs with jazz elements and he's pretty smooth on the mic. 7/10

This album was definitely more intense than the two previous Buckley albums we had. Intense in a good way, definitely rockier and infusing his various styles of crooning with some blues-rock elements as well. I enjoyed it.

Good music...too bad he was such a waste of a person personally

Interesting. II'm glad sex funk exists, don't know that I will ever listen to it again.

Move with Me - Piano and old rock might be one of my favorites combinati- OMG FEMALE SINGERS, LOVE IT. Get on Top - Lovely organ, catchy riff and upbeat drums, this song should be sountrack for a movie. Sweet Surrender - Pretty chill, fucking love it. Nighthawkin' - Was perfect for killing zombies in GMOD. Devil Eyes - Is perfect for a GMOD lobby. Hong Kong Bar - Doesn't sound like HK, but does sound like a bar, which is incredibly good. Make it Right - Good ending, pretty solid. Solid album, the first half was better tho. Top 3 Move with Me Get on Top Sweet Surrender

Tough competition with his brother but love that hes still doing his thing. Enjoyable listen

God’s horniest soldier telling it like it is for 40 minutes.

I thought it was surprisingly funky (not sure who I was getting confused with) then all the reviews mentioned the lyrics so I gave them a read. Someone needs a good wank, don't they, Tim?

nice - need a few more listens for a better assessment. had never listened to this one before!

This is my second Tim Buckley, and this was much more interesting than the first one (Happy Sad).

Suprising really good - not actually heard any Tim Buckley before today (or not noticed I had anyway) - but this is really rather excellent.

Strange musical style mixing folk, R&B, funk. Crazy weird.

This album was ok. Good background music. Wasn't too intrusive and I certainly would listen to it again.

Questionable lyrics, but pretty funky so I can overlook it

Car music. Nothing super special but I liked it. Stand-out: Make It Right

Another very solid Tim Buckley album! Haven’t spent as much time with this one as Lorca or Starsailor but this is a good middle ground between his late career jamming and free jazz experimentation

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Make it right

4, slušaću nekad opet

28th September 2023 Can’t remember when I listened to this or what we were doing that day but I remember loving this.

This is an interesting mix of funk, country rock, even a little blues. It sounds like Mr. Buckley and crew are having a blast playing around, without a care in the world who is listening—they just be groovin'! tldr; I'm overthinking it. I enjoyed the music and am perhaps too prudish to listen to this with other people around. My first impression—taken from the very second line of lyrics—is that the album's primary theme relates to the title, if perhaps “L.A.” isn't referring to “the City of Angels,” but to “the Lower Abdomen.” [Tangent] I wonder if listeners in 1972 thought about this album similar to listeners in 2000 did of Shaggy's album, Hot Shot—a guilty pleasure that somehow acceptably loosens society's typically uptight chastity belt for a moment. Get on Top carries the fun to the next level with a bunch of nonsense scatting and a great, upbeat groove. Once we get a little further into the album though, we get a glimpse that perhaps there's more to this than one's celebration of kinky, sexy times: There's Nighthawking, a dichotomically upbeat story about an encounter with an angry, drunk, possibly racist former soldier; Hong Kong Bar is a sharp contrast from other tracks, painting a mellow, bluesy atmosphere while signing about loss and making due with what one's got—it sounds reminiscent of a work song slaves in the US South might have sung; and Make it Right closes out the album by pairing a hitchhiker's masochistic daydream with some energetic Flamenco-like guitar picking and dramatic, sweeping violin strings. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but is this album on the list because it is fun and has notably risque lyrics for the time period? Are these songs random vignettes of the subject's outré encounters and fondness for robust women? Or, is this more about the subject drowning out the pain of heartbreak, the horrors of war, the shame of society's rejection, in the only way they know how? Is the subject punishing themself for their own past transgressions? Are they lingering between numbness and fleeting ecstasy, feeling lost and without a map? I find this album musically unique and quirky. Lyrically, I'm curious if there's something more lurking beneath the surface. It may not be frequent, but I will certainly revisit this album again.

The band and the songs: 5 stars. The vocals: 2 stars. Overall: 4 stars. (A couple of weeks ago the generator generated Goodbye and Hello, a very different album, which I also rated as 4 star: a totally different style and better way of singing but less consistent.)

Listened to a couple Tim albums over the years. First time with this one. Some nice tunes.

I don't know anything about Tim Buckley or his various musical styles but I found this attempt at funky R&B fused with a debauched sex odyssey theme a lot of fun (love his backing band and that jangly piano). His vocals and approach reminded me of Dr. John and even Nick Cave (goes deep on a theme), and I've been pleasantly surprised by their work. I don't know if it's the album's energy or the complete lack of apology in his cheeky lyrics, but I really dug it. Move With Me is like a raunchier (but still funny) version of Give me Two Steps by Skynyrd. Sweet Surrender shows his vocal range. Nighthawkin' and Make It Right had the intensity and funky beats reminiscent of Disco Inferno by the Trammps or Showdown by ELO. This album is just cool.

I’m not sure if this guy has sex…. Other than that great music!

really fun actually New Orleans jazz rock the first song is awesome

Never listened to him but this was pretty good.

This is the third Tim Buckley album in this project, and like the others it has its own distinct sound, and I wasn't sure if I loved it or hated it. The first try listening was more on the hate side, but when I gave it another chance it was bluesy, kind of funky, and somewhat kinky and I really liked it.

I wasn't expecting what I was hearing from Tim Buckley. Rough and bluesy...sometimes the lyrics (which I don't generally pay close attention to) would make me do a second take. It was somewhat appealing and catchy to my ear.

It's late and I'm tired and it's nine minutes until my birthday so I'm not going to go too much into detail about the sexism and racism on this album. It's there. Did I enjoy it anyway? Sure did.

4/5. What a funky album, not at all what I expected. It’s so groovy and heavily inspired by r&b and soul. Some funny lyrics and vocal trains that make this one so fun to listen to.

Tremendo disco, me encantó. Es raro ponerle similitues, tiene cositas de Sabina en vivo. Está para exprimirlo.

Surprised at how upbeat this is, I like it a lot. Gets a bit Led-Zep bluesy in places.

Enjoyed the music, singing was good, would listen again.

I quite enjoyed this one. Turns out I wasn't really listening to the lyrics, he's a bit of a filthy animal. Lovely melodies and vocals.

Enjoyed the opening tracks, and also the final track. Pretty filthy lyrically! The rest was pretty good too, although pretty forgettable. Highlights: Move with me Get on top Make it right 3.5 if I could

Very cool Avant-Garde like rock album! The vocals are great, instrumentation even better. Never quite gave Buckley the attention I Should have, very good album! 8 out of 10

Þetta er barasta mjög næs áttundatugar grúv. Röddin sérstök en á oft mjög flotta spretti. Ég hlustaði tvisvar, er til í meira.

You can't be angry when listening to Paul Simon, it's illegal.

sonzao

Wasn’t expecting much from this seeing some of the top reviews, but I was surprised really enjoyed this great funky blues sound, vocals can get a bit weird but adds to the album, added to my frequent rotation. Cheesey horny lyrics stop it being a true masterpiece

Beautiful.

Some of the lyrics are cringeworthy in 2023, but Tim Buckley's vocals are undeniably impressive. The band adds flourishes that distinguish this album from earlier ones. It all depends on which Tim you like. The singer songwriter version of his earlier works or the more experimental Tim represented here. He reaches a bit stylistically on some tracks and some don't work, but overall, this is an impressive piece of music.

Hadn't heard this before. Not what I would have expected. Much more bluesy and harder rocking songs. Would like to give this 3.5 but I think it serves to be rounded up.

Todo pelota. Siga, siga!

S'écoute vraiment bien, un bon folk rock qui nous plonge dans les années 70.

Okay Tim likes to rock out

Pretty interestą

What an interesting album. I also read up a bit on this artist and I'm really interested in trying his other works Saved tracks: Get on Top, Sweet Surrender, Hong Kong Bar, Make It Right

Never really listened to Tim Buckley before even though I thought I had. Feels like in an alternate timeline this takes the place of some bluesy 70s band in the general zeitgeist. Pretty good stuff.

Loved his voice. Crazy how similar in tone and range he was to his son he had nothing to do with.

Fun songs

i'm going to LA next week, i'll let you know if this is what LA actually sounds like. i like his continuation of Jim Morrisons vibe, he probably would have been a good replacement. pretty solid album, i reckon i'll listen to this again someday which is a fucking massive upgrade on most.

My first born child died so this record could be made. Tim Buckley does that sacrifice justice.

Very "70s L.A." with both positive and negative connotations 4/5.

Probably the most commercial album that Tim made. You can imagine Jeff singing some of these songs. This is a good way in to discovering Tim. Work your way backwards from here!

This album gets into such a hard groove at times, a lot of fun to listen to! I just wish it wasn't such a horny album, Tim was down bad the entire duration of Greetings from LA Get on Top Make it Right

Upon first glance, a funk album made by a troubled folk rock troubadour screams all sorts of thoughts: an act of artistic desperation, an awkward attempt to fit in with then-prevailing trends, a curious case of cashing in. Yet, when one come across Greetings From L.A., one finds Tim Buckley once again finding a genre and making it fit on his terms. Yeah, he helps and grovells and becomes frankly sexual in a strange fashion but at least he is honest about where he is. A missive from one of the more curious musicians of his era, this is a postcard that shall be reexamined and reevaluated in due time. Favorites: Move With Me, Get on Top, Sweet Surrender, Devil Eyes, Hong Kong Bar.

Очень такой блюзо-роковый альбом. Мне он понравился, звучит бодро и качает хорошо.

Never heard any Tim Buckley before and I liked this a lot. Great upbeat songs with a great great band laying down the foundation for Tim's amazing voice; powerful, emotive, versatile. A really good album that will stay in rotation. 4 🌟

Not bad, easy listening

I liked this album. Tim is a hard guy to judge. Not certain how much of the music is being playing straight and how much is pointed satire. Absent thinking about the lyrics though it’s a great album

some real good tracks here, this album is one you can really sink into. didn’t know anything about tim buckley except for his son, going to check out more of his music.

The music makes it clear the dude fucks. And tbh, the album does fuck. I liked it more than I thought I would.

Top notch road music

Thrusts AF, but pretty good musically

Such a soulful voice! Not sure its my kind of music, but it's really good anyway.

Whats not to love about Tim Buckley apart from the fact that he is no longer with us to give us those searing blues compositions? Love "Nighthawking" and "Sweet Surrender". Classic Album rightfully on the list.

Wow what a skilled guitarist and musician, the playing on Hong Kong Bar is absolutely mesmerising!! I really loved this album. There were a few outdated elements like the fetishisation of black women in Move with Me which is otherwise a great track. This was totally acceptable at the time in the 70s though (may even have been seen as a good thing) but it does just stick out and feel a little uncomfortable listening now...

Great blues stuff straight to the soul. Started as a 3 but rose to a 3.5 and settled at a 4.

Odakle ljubav prema Timčeku? Bome, prije svega, svestran je. Ovo nisam očekivao da će snimit, da će napravit, ali ipak je! Bome si nas napustio jako rano, šteta velika.

It's surprisingly good!

My first thought when I saw this one was “ANOTHER singer-songwriter, yay…” HOWEVER, I thought this one was pretty good, there’s some nice instrumentation here. The most enjoyable songs on this record were ‘devils eyes’ and ‘make it right’ though there were a number of good songs here. The lyrics are… interesting. Not the type you’d want to play out loud next to a busy window (which I found out the hard way). The singing is nice though. Overall I’d give this one a 3.75 stars.

Estranged father of Jeff Buckley. Died at 28 of heroin overdose. Kinda funky and strange. Interesting fun sound.

I never listened to a Tim Buckley album before...not at all what I expected. Figured it would be some quiet, NickDrakeesque folk songs sung by a plaintive fragile whispy voiced loner. Imagine my surprise...this album rocks. What a voice ol' Tim has, I see from where his sons talent comes. I like this album, I'm on my third play in 24 hours, and like it more each time. 4 🌟

4/5. Tim Buckley has a funny voice 👍

Again, I am a simple gal with simple wishes, and if I can dance to it then I will enjoy it. I can most certainly dance to this, and so I enjoy it a lot! Tim Buckley's voice is so bloody good and the instrumentals are so FULL WOO

Really cool album. More gritty than Goodbye and Hello. Talented songwriter.

dobar đir!

A lot of energy going on here, most of it good. Nicely put together songs, powerful vocals. His verbal 'solos' are a bit odd though.

I liked the album. Never heard or heard of this artist. 3.5

A nice, easy listen. A little swing, a little soul, and other things that I can't quite name. If Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin had ever collaborated, I think that the result would have been something like this.

YASS TIM BUCKLEY, let’s gooooo I did not have time to focus, rly but I know I will come back jeszcze słucham ale dam czwórkę, bo pewnie będzie mi się podobać więcej na rym

Buen estilo, buena voz, buen disco que se me hizo muy corto.

This was great! Really enjoyed it, funky bluesy bar rock! VINYL purchase coming up! Cracking album!

What a great voice. Gone too soon.

Not something I’ve listened to before and I liked it!

Nooit eerder iets van Tim Buckley geluisterd; Erg tof

Quirky album with some real Sing-along tunes. Great for a sunny afternoon listening. Reminds of Jerry Reed in song composition and sound.

psychedelic rock, progressive jazz Dream Letter (1990) + Blue Afternoon

Good R&B / funk for a white guy

Fedt rock album og den gamle. Desværre lyder sangeren ret Adam Sandler agtig irriterede. Jeg med en anden sanger kunne den måske hvad været 5 stjerner

Horny guy!

All I remember about this Buckley guy is that the album Happy Sad is pretty boring. Does Greetings From L.A. fare better? (Answer: yes, a bit better.) Nice honky-tonky starting track in Move with Me. It would work splendidly as a Rolling Stones track from around the same time (circa Exile On Main Street). I quite like Buckley's vocal delivery at the beginning, though I hope he has more to offer than that sort of throaty fake-soul yodeling he does. Especially near the end of the song. I can handle when Billy Joel does it, but something about Buckley doing it kind of irks me. Regardless: a nice groovy way to open. We transition to something more fast-paced and lightfooted in Get on Top, which (judging by the all-too-frequent grunting) is clear innuendo. Fun, energetic... a bit goofy with Buckley's voice, but you quickly learn to tune that out. Focus on the gradually shifting texture shifts (reminiscent of L.A. Woman or the like), the great keyboard playing, the great percussion. Baby steps. Sweet Surrender is the last chance I'll give this stupid vocal until I perform a sweet surrender. It's a shame, really. Everything else about the music is solid as heck. This song in particular kind of reminds me of early Steely Dan or Eagles. Good use of strings, light electric guitar, and a flowy, semi-Latin feel. The vocals, mainly in the second half, are almost comically terrible. Nighthawkin' is passable. Poppy, and a respectful length. The backing vocals are a little brash but they offset Buckley's overly theatrical one nicely. What's this? Am I actually enjoying this album? Solid keyboard solo in Devil Eyes that absolutely sells the song, because the rest is a bit of a lacklustre rehashing of previous tracks. The penultimate track, Hong Kong Bar kind of sucks and I'm tired of pretending otherwise. The lack of instrumentation isn't bad in itself, but it (re-)exposes the bad singing and doesn't create any hooks/riffs/melodies worth coming back to. Seven sluggish minutes that could've been spent on two or three tracks from Ziggy Stardust (or other far superior 1972 material). We get our first taste of some mildly interesting chords in Make It Right, coupled with some spirited performance on drums, strings, and (darn good) bass. The semi-Latin feel is re-approached but done more effectively this time. I don't particularly comprehend what's up with the lyrics of Make It Right. Something about "beat me, slap me". Eh. At least it isn't openly racist or calling for violence against others. It beats the vast majority of lyrics in a certain genre of a certain decade. 3/5 Key tracks: Get on Top, Make It Right

I honestly don't know what to think about this. It was funky, but i don't really like funky Tim Buckley. Not my favourite, but it was not terrible either. Devils Eyes or make it right was the standout track. 3 stars

6/10 Me gusto, algunas partes medio flojas pero esta bueno, termina con buena energía banque eso

Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? ✅ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅

Mooi. Goeie stem en mooi gitaarwerk. Wel nummers die over tijd kunnen groeien denk ik, maar sprak me nu nog niet echt direct aan

Disco entretenido, no es de los mejores que he escuchado, pero no es malo ni bueno.

A lot more funky and rock than his sons music. But Hallelujah and Get on Top are essentially both about the same topic :)

More like “Greetings from Memphis”. Instead of the expected singer-songwriter fare, we get R&B that would make Delaney & Bonnie proud. Worth hearing. I will likely check out more of his catalog.

His voice is absolutely 🔥 Songs were ok, voice was 11/10

An interesting ride. Lots of left turns, but it kind of worked.

Ay perdón amiga te voy bajando el volumen acá, igual nos quedamos toda la noche todo el día siguiente estuvo re divertido pero bueno que pena q te quedaste con ese pedacito la próxima venite.

The band sounds great, but that cunt singing has a lot of room for improvement 😒 2.5⭐️

Some of the long discursive songs are cool!

This was significantly more enjoyable than the two sixties Tim Buckley albums from earlier. Vastly prefer the horndog funk variant of Buckley, even if the lyrics are cringe. I still don't totally love his voice so this is a strong three, but it's pretty close to a four.

Okay listen, lyrics didn't really resonate and sometimes felt hollow

it’s pretty good. i prefer the wild, improvisational tim, but this is decent rock music

Solid 3 , albeit his folk album was better

This Tim Buckley record is much less my thing than the folkier cut we had on the list, but a few lyrics aside its a pretty good time, which i think is the intention, going solid 3

Didn’t we already listen to this? I feel like these albums are all running together. It was fine. Nothing offensive. Horny good time music.

All I could think of was this album was a substitute for the doors.
